About the cover: While you’re going to have to wait for our March issue to learn all about the talent behind our cover photo, Bader Hamad Al Rajhi likes to find beauty in the most unassuming places. With his focus on artfully composed, abstract-inspired photos, the self-taught photographer likes to present everyday realities in an artistic light—be it exaggerated, abstract, or presented in a minimalist format. Our cover photo was actually snapped in Kuwait City’s pedestrian tunnels, by the city’s iconic financial district. Open to your own interpretation, we personally love how this everyday pathway is traversed by people from all walks of life, yet we never seem to take pause to admire the real beauty that surrounds us. Thank you for reminding us to take pause, Bader. For more on Bader, follow @The_Rhythm on Instagram.

Gotta love February in K-town! So much going on, one simply can’t keep up. Valentine’s Day for all the cheesy romantics out there. National Day and Liberation Day for all the water gun and water balloon lovers. A full schedule of concerts and events at JACC (who would have believed that one day we’d be casually talking about concerts by famous singers and bands taking place in Kuwait like that?), and great weather for those who don’t want to actually do anything except park their behinds on a chair in a sunny outdoor café and watch the world go by.
The bazaar team...
This edition of bazaar is shaping up to be truly, one of our most beautiful issues ever! We’re celebrating this nation’s beauty, which lies in its amazing people, offerings and places. We get up close and personal with Sheikha Fatima AlSabah’s world of Prismologie to discuss the healing power of colors, and catch up with Spanish artist Sfhir to learn more about his incredible work at ARGAN Square— don’t miss it. Of course, no issue of bazaar would be complete without presenting you with a curated list of dining destinations and ideas that perfectly showcase Kuwait’s unstoppable food scene. We first met up with Zitaat’s General Manager Najlaa Karam to learn all about how the app enhances Kuwait’s food services scene. Then, we took a leisurely stroll in Kuwait City to discover the House of Lavan, where we explored the beautiful flavors of India, one dish at a time. We also hung out with Mr. and Mrs. Good Stuff, a fab and fit couple with healthy values. Mais Alghanim’s Stars Menu is available for a limited time only, so we did our homework, and investigated these delectable dishes to bring you our favorites. Don’t feel like leaving the house? Check out our experience with the always-yummy Turkish Grill. Before we leave you to start enjoying our February edition—don’t forget to gift your loved ones this month, and get a head start using the app bleems! CULTURE FAIR: YESTERDAY, TODAY & TOMORROW - ASEEL ALYAQOUB Date: 13 February – 23 February Location: South Sabhan, Block 8, Street 105, Building No. 168 The Sultan Gallery presents the second solo show of Kuwaiti visual artist Aseel AlYaqoub this month. Bringing together almost two years of research revolving around Kuwait’s postage stamps, Culture Fair focuses on AlYaqoub’s dialogue with the nation’s use of imagery and events during the Golden Era (circa 1940-1980) in particular. Known for her politically satire works of art, Aseel AlYaqoub explores various histories of Kuwait’s past and how it emerges into the present. Using nostalgia as an instrument for critical thought, rather than longing for the past, allows AlYaqoub to investigate the invention and reinvention of heritage and tradition. In the process of collecting Kuwaiti postage stamps, AlYaqoub probes at the visually subdued and discreet nature of the propaganda exhibited. As it was once widely circulated, the postage stamp does not usually have an obvious message which in turn enhances its peculiar effectiveness. The stamp itself was ideal propaganda. It went from hand to hand and town to town; it reached the farthest corners and provinces of a country and even the farthest countries of the world. It was and may still be a symbol of the nation from which the stamp is mailed, a vivid expression of that country’s culture, civilization and of its ideas and ideals. THE ULTIMATE THROWBACK
Keeping it real with a side of feels at the Kuwait Towers By bazaar staff
Ah, the towers. We all know them and love them. Cruising down the Gulf Road route with it erected along the skyline, always finding it creeping up in photos, and of course, having it as the national landmark representing this great country in every touristic emblem or poster. Designed by Swedish Architect Sune Lindström, The Kuwait Towers were constructed and open to the public in the late 1970s, and so, growing up, they’ve always been a quintessential backdrop of our respective childhoods. However, though I lived in Kuwait consecutively pre and post-Gulf War, I seldom stepped foot inside the towers! Maybe when I was a child? Once? And so with gusto, we decided to recreate the ultimate throwback if not for ourselves, for the young lady who was deprived of a cult classic activity. We park at the Towers’ vast lot, which connects to several attractions in and of themselves. There’s a quaint Paintball Cart (which to us sparked a lot of conversation – perhaps an idea for our next bazaar Tries?) the nostalgic Aqua Park entertainment facilities, gems like Fish Market and Fusion restaurants, and of course, plenty of space to walk, frolic, picnic and enjoy the beauty of being alongside the Arabian Gulf. And so, it was time to experience the Ultimate Throwback. Only 3KD to enter, you’re taken up over 126 flights in the elevator to the viewing sphere, and the elevator is operated by a sullen looking man wearing classic Elevator Engineer garb. Talk to him, ask him a question, he’ll only mutter in response – but it’s endearing and comical; reminiscent to the Queen’s guards standing alongside Buckingham Palace. Before taking that elevator ride up, however, we had to pop into the towers’ gift store! Books on Kuwait’s history neatly lined up on shelves, I had a great time flipping through Pictures Encyclopedia of Kuwait: Kuwait Pictures and Memories by Abdulmohsen Mohammad Hejji Al-Awadhi - an old photography book of black-and-white Kuwait from the 19th and 20th centuries. But alas, Ali the elevator man was waiting, and it was time to head up to the sphere to check out that view all those expats were always raving about! Once we arrived to the viewing sphere, we saw what all the tourists who’ve beaten us resident locals up here have been talking about. Kuwait has some great platforms for stunning views, but there’s no view that compares to that of what you’ll see from the viewing sphere of Kuwait’s favorite structure. They even have those binocular machines that take tokens purchased at the snack stand on the upper level for a half dinar. Using one of those binoculars 24
was actually life changing, as you could see anything from a super close-up distance. Let me tell you about my secret-favorite part of the experience: the snack stand. If you walk up the stairs leading to the second level of the viewing sphere, there's a man selling chips, juices, soda, water and candy bars. The most important thing however, is the popcorn. We all went nuts for it! As soon as the scent of freshly popped kernels wafted from the upper level to our nostrils, we were on a mission to get some popcorn-machinemade popcorn. That being said, it made taking in the view that much more enjoyable. To top off a perfect trip to the Kuwait Towers, we passed by their restaurant for a sneak peek on the way down. Horizon, the towers’ signature restaurant, had a delicious atmosphere and one of the more tantalizing buffets we’d ever seen! Table after table practically sinking under the weight of salads and cold starters, hot dishes, desserts and even an exciting pasta station were calling out to us to stay and indulge for Wednesday night dinner. We tore ourselves away, however, with promises to come back for lunch one day, and then found ourselves in a lovely compromise: Le Café. This
sweet café is most certainly a hidden gem, offering appetizers, sandwiches and snacks. And so, we sat nestled between Kuwait’s glistening spheres as we sipped our coffee and munched on some of the best French fries we’d ever had, watching the sun set over Kuwait City. All in all, it was a gorgeous experience, and we wondered why we’d let ourselves go so long without enjoying it more often. Will we be going back to the Kuwait Towers? We’d love to say yes, but life gets in the way. Although, it’s important to remember that this monument doesn’t just pose as a backdrop or a show of interesting lights along the Gulf Road’s night sky – it offers beauty, serenity, and of course, a feeling so deeply pitted with nostalgia that it bubbles up inside you like warm karak tea. Another trip to the towers soon? Yes, please. The Kuwait Towers are located along the Arabian Gulf Road – you can’t miss them! They’re open to the public from 8 a.m.- 11 p.m. daily. Contact their reception by calling 2496 5500, and follow them on Instagram @kuwait.towers for more information.

Kuwait’s Dr. Shahd Al-Shammari to participate at Emirates Lit Festival
By bazaar staff
In a fast-growing world where the screen is rapidly battling the page, a literary festival has become a delicacy for the bookish to enjoy. We, the bookish, are pleased to announce that The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature (Emirates Lit Festival) is taking place from the 1st -10th of March 2018. With handpicked authors from around the world to share their finest pieces of work, we take pride in the fact that one of our very own will be participating in this festival, sharing her work alongside a range of international greats. Dr. Shahd Al-Shammari is known for producing thoughtfully analytical works in Literary Madness in British, Postcolonial, and Bedouin Women’s Writing (2016), heartwarming poetry in Forget the Words (2016), and On Love and Loss (2015), and short, sweet and powerful prose in The Secret of 50/50 (2017). Focusing on Women’s Studies, the young Kuwaiti authoress is also an assistant professor at GUST University. With research areas under her belt including Women’s Studies, Disability Studies in literature, and most recently, illness narratives, her latest book Notes On The Flesh (2017) aptly acts as a collection of short stories dealing with gender, race, and disability issues in Kuwait. Having participated in book festivals and worldwide conferences prior, this work continues to attract academic and public interest, and will be featured alongside Shahd in the 2018 Emirates Lit Festival. To commemorate this proud moment, we sit down with Shahd to discuss her thoughts on literature, and what it means to her to be the accomplished writer she has become, spreading the word of the pen today. Do you believe that modern, regional literature is valuable to our everyday lives? If so, how? Of course, these are the narratives that matter. We need voices from Arab women writers and a platform to discuss new narratives of what is really happening in our worlds. We need to write ourselves. Being a young published author, do you feel that your literature targets a specific age range? Or is it rather, inclusive? My work is actually aimed at all women, but specifically women with a sense of alienation due to disability, sexuality, and/or social oppression. 26
I don't think it is age specific at all, but rather its interest is to be inclusive of women and minority groups. How do you feel about the fact that regional Middle Eastern literature now includes English language prose more frequently than ever before? I think this argument that we should only write in mother tongue is outdated. English is now “Englishes”, and we truly can have two mother tongues, one is the language we adopt, the other is the one we are born with. I feel that English is a way I can tell my story to the world regardless of any language or social barrier. Which of your works can we expect to find in the Emirates Airlines Festival of Literature? How does it feel to participate in this festival? One of my dreams as a literature undergrad student was to participate in the festival. Today as an author and a professor of literature I am here. This is a dream come true for me. My work is Notes on the Flesh, which is a collection of short stories that deals with love and disability
in the Middle East. It is partly non-fictional and partly fiction. How do you feel that literature has changed over the years, and how must we work to preserve it for future generations? Literature is definitely more inclusive now, more flexible in terms of genre, and it has become a tool for social and political expression even more so in the region. Young writers and readers feel it is theirs, not reserved only for scholars of literature. It continues to thrive. The Emirates Lit Festival is a beautiful time of the year and I know it will continue to preserve literature in the region. Which is your proudest piece? Notes on the Flesh includes many stories but my proudest piece, or shall I say, dearest to my heart, is 'Forty' because it deals with grief in a very raw manner and was very difficult to write. Shahd Al Shammari will be speaking at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature from 1-10 March 2018. Get your Early Bird Discount Tickets online today at tickets.emirateslitfest.com.

LIVING IN COLOR
Sheikha Fatima Al-Sabah: healing energy through beauty By: bazaar staff
“In high school, I volunteered to usher the seniors’ graduation. I had to wear black, but I had no idea how to do it! The idea of not dressing in color has always felt so unnatural to me!” Sheikha Fatima Al-Sabah laughs. Her ensemble confirms this. She’s decked out in colorful sophistication, sporting a rich blue business-casual dress paired with a powder pink coat draped for sport across her shoulders. Even her conference room bursts in color, with vibrant yellow shelving units contrasting clean white walls, adding lots of energy in her surroundings. This is clearly the outcome of the colorful mind that was the prerequisite to creating Prismologie, the colorful, mood-enhancing range of body care products we never knew we needed. Fatima, however, always knew that the local market craved a little color in their lives. Growing up in a family that embraced color therapy may have subconsciously led the bright-eyed young entrepreneur towards the path of healing others. With Prismologie, she also found herself teaming up with an unlikely, and enjoyable partner: her very own mother, Sheikha Intisar Al Sabah. “For me, my interest in color started because my mom wouldn’t allow us to wear black when we were growing up,” Fatima smiles, in spite of herself. “Since I was young, she’d always instilled 28
the values of color therapy within [my siblings and I], making us dress colorfully to reflect on and enhance our moods.” This interest brought the mother-daughter duo closer, organizing wellness workshops during Fatima’s post- University days, where they’d bring in international teachers to teach personal development classes, and different types of reiki. This didn’t produce a reaction from the market as they’d hoped, due to the public’s personal preferences. “We live in a semi-conservative country, so with these events came a lot of questions and concerns that people
had in relation to whether or not these practices were compatible with our culture.” Color, on the other hand, was never an issue. “Nobody has every felt a conflict of interest with the subject of color. It isn’t offensive, and you can’t deny that surrounding colors affect your mood!” And thus, in 2015, the Sheikhas Intisar and Fatima launched Prismologie – an innovative way of incorporating color into our everyday lives, while gaining maximum benefits from a few moments of aromatherapy. “The idea of Prismologie strays away from
a certain personality, saying that you need one specific product all the time. We’re complex human beings, and our moods change all the time - nobody has just one personality.” Embracing that, Prismologie offers a range of different UKmade body care products curated by colors that would reflect on your mood. With a menu of 12 products categorized in six different colors, each color offers two different products packed with energy enhancing goodness to uplift, enlighten and embrace your soul. As Fatima puts it, “you apply something to 90% of your skin, it’s bound to have a great effect on your mood!” The Prismologie products are luxurious and vibrant, from their packaging to their contents. Each product is packaged in an environmentally friendly compartment or bottle finished in its respective opaque color, containing ingredients that emulate the assigned color of energy. The yellow range, for instance, is infused with citrine
and bergamot, giving the body a rush of intense, joyful energy whenever used. Red comes in a scrub and a warming body oil, which contains invigorating, blood warming ingredients like capsicum and real ruby extracts. “That’s the other thing that’s special about our line,” Fatima says matter-of-factly, “each product range is infused with gemstones that are relevant to their color. Green is jade, pink has rose quartz, Indigo has sapphire and white has diamonds, too.” Prismologie’s use of gemstones is reflective on Fatima’s knowledge of the energy-healing world. When asked if she incorporated real gemstones as part of her range’s composition because of their high-energy components, she gave a “bingo!” smile in response. “I took a course in crystal therapy – I love, crystal therapy” she said warmly. “A big part of crystal therapy also included color therapy, so I was able to know the benefits that each color could have on your
mood, and because gemstones are known to be filled with energy, I had to pair the two into one product.” Tried and tested, it works! Fatima whipped out a few items from her collection and we played around, while she walked me through each unique product. Meeting the pink range, which she called “a hug in a bottle,” the comforting, soothing after effect that was promised really shone through in the hand and cuticle cream. The green range’s hand exfoliant was as restorative as promised, and I can’t begin to tell you about the yellow. That energizing, joy-packed yellow that has been reported to change lives. Though that’s my personal favorite line, Fatima dismisses having to choose a favorite “color” with wisdom. “It’s impossible – it really depends on my mood! But if you’re asking what my favorite color is in general, it’s red.” “I have this friend who lives in Greece, who [Continued...]
29
had a really rough year.” Fatima begins as I divert my attention back to her after indulging in her “five second rule” – a trick she’s been known to incorporate in her daily life using the pink range's moisturizing hand and cuticle cream, breathing in the scent, and taking its comforting properties as a way to find a bit of Zen in a stressful moment. "She was visiting Kuwait, and I gifted her a set of our yellows, which included a body wash. As the days passed and her obstacles increased, she'd fallen into tough times. One day, she decided to try the yellow body wash, and started to sing while she used it. She realized that she hadn't sung in the shower in a long time, and so she started stocking up because of how it made her feel! This is why I do this.” With a testimonial like that, as well as other rave reviews from customers where they retail in the UK, an impressive list of retailers households in Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, and a 2016 Beauty Award under their belt, it’s no question that Prismologie is a product worth pampering yourself with. Luxury? Yes – but for everybody, absolutely. “I want us all to embrace color more. We eat in color, see color, wear colors – colors are even one of the first things we learn in life. Incorporate it in your everyday life, and you’ll see what a difference it makes.” Next stop, a Prismologie retailer for some aromatherapy! Perhaps one of the high-end nail salons where the product is stocked? 30

THE CIRCUS ARTISTS OF KUWAIT
From aerialists to flow artists, performance art takes center stage By Reem Al-Gharabally
Suspended in the air from the ceiling is what looks like a big, steel hula-hoop with a reassuring crash pad under it. I have just learnt the hoop is called aerial Lyra and it is my first lesson. “Place your right hand here, place your left hand there, hook your knee, now the other one and pull yourself up,” my teacher Mona Almazidi instructs. I suspend my anxiety, follow her instructions and here I am sitting on the hoop as though it is a swing, feet off the ground. Mona then guides me into different shapes with delightful names like Man on the Moon and Peter Pan. In some shapes I am balancing, in others I am hanging. I am surprised every time she guides me into a new shape not really believing I could do any of this. The adrenalin pumps and I feel euphoric. I especially never believed I would be trying any of this in a small gym in a residential suburb in Kuwait. Circus classes have arrived in Kuwait and being taught by homegrown Kuwaiti circus artists across the city. Mona is passionate about sharing her skills. “I am happy to teach anyone who is willing to learn,” she says. “I have a variety of people in my classes ... when they try this they stop doubting themselves. Aerial skills give you power and self-confidence. It is different from doing a push up. People never imagine themselves hanging. When they are there they begin to love their bodies because it is what took them up there” Mona discovered aerial while living in Baltimore when a pole dancing class she wanted to take was booked out. “I saw the Lyras hanging there and they looked beautiful. I was excited, scared, did not know what to expect. I took the class and the moment I finished and left the gym I told myself this is what I am going to do,” she says. “I could not invert, I could not lift myself, I could not do a single pull up. But I knew I was going to do this, ” she says. “It is never too late. Anyone can start. but you need to have the will, and you have to be consistent to build strength.” What followed for her was months of grueling training to physically prepare her to meet the rigorous requirements of an aerial teacher-training program. “I knew I wanted to take this back to Kuwait,” she says. She is not alone. The community of circus artists in Kuwait is small but growing. Tamara Qabazard, a vet at Kuwait zoo is also a silks aerialist who performs regularly at events in Kuwait and together with Mona will be running Kuwait’s first-ever aerial silks and Lyra workshop in February. 32

Tamara Qabazard It was after watching an inspiring aerial performance while working in New York that motivated Tamara to find a class to learn aerial silks - a performance style art in which artists perform acrobatics while hanging from a special, suspended fabric.“Circus is about looking at what your body can do and appreciating it for that. It also teaches you a lot of patience and you have to let go of a lot of control. It puts you in tune with your body, “she says. “In Kuwait we have a love hate relationship with our bodies. We have a food culture, we have a gym culture but the balance in between is really difficult”
As a child, like many children, Tamara dreamed of running away to join the circus. “I wanted to be a vet and a performer for the circus. And then a book came out called Water for Elephants and it is about a guy who runs away as a vet to join the circus,” she says. “Circus felt like a faraway dream that I was never going to do or try.” “Circus brings back a feeling of nostalgia, and amazement. I think it is connected to this childhood feeling of going to the circus and seeing people flying in the air. We are so grounded as people, it gives a different element.” She believe there are no prerequisites for

Mona Almazidi trying aerial: “You just need to get up there with a clear head and be open to trying things, and be okay with not being able to do things (the) first few times. You will gain your upper body strength and your flexibility by working on it,” Both Mona and Tamara regularly travel to circus schools abroad to continue developing their skills and update their teaching credentials. But the ultimate aim is to have a circus school in Kuwait. “You don’t have to run away to join the circus, you can bring the circus here,” says Dalal Almohanna, a hoop dancer and teacher who has been running classes and successful flow jams in the last year around Kuwait. Hula hoopers, jugglers, fire dancers and other forms of object manipulation while dancing are called Flow Arts. Dalal believes it is a form of moving meditation. She picked up the hoop to deal with the grief of losing her mother to cancer and she has not put it down. Entirely self-taught through dedicated practice, she then trained to teach 34

Dalal Almohanna hooping to others. “There is a crazy empowerment that the hoop gave me“ Dalal says. “It is like I reowned my body and re-owned myself when I started hooping. It is like a self love machine and with that you gain control over yourself and that reflects in confidence outside of the home.” When she ran her first flow jam she did not know how it would go in Kuwait - turning up with her hoops and a DJ in tow, and inviting everyone to pick up a hoop and flow to the music. “It worked. People picked up hoops, men picked up hoops, fathers and sons picked up hoops. I think Kuwait is appreciating it and I am so proud of Kuwait,” she says. ”Somehow the hula hoop erases the stigma of dance. “ There are a growing number of flow artists in Kuwait and when there is a flow jam they come out to play. “We call each other “flomies” – because we are homies who flow together,” she laughs. “I think right now a lot of things are turning local. So maybe that is why it is time to have a local circus.
And the talents are showing up from everywhere.” “I think the idea of circus has changed over the years, it has now become a lot more artistic and more ethical. The new circuses don’t need animals. It is not a freak show anymore but a talent show,” she says. “Now that the world is changing in ways where people are following their passions more, it is allowing everyone to find their inner child. Circus is about that.” To take part in Tamara and Mona’s February workshops Aerial Silks Beginner 101 (Friday 2nd February 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.) or Lyra Silks (Friday 2nd February 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.) at Flare Shuwaikh contact Whatsapp 9094 7411 (Females only). SFHIR SO GOOD
THE SPANISH ARTIST ON HIS ARGAN SQUARE CREATION By bazaar staff
36
For those of you less familiar with it, the graffiti art form was arguably started in Philadelphia by “Cornbread” in 1967. He started spraying “Cornbread loves Cynthia” on walls all over the north of the city to impress the girl he had a crush on. After winning the girl the “tagging” continued to the point he tagged an elephant in the zoo and got arrested. Other artists took to tagging, and Zephyr was one of the original graffiti artists in the 1980s to transition successfully from the tagging of the sides of subway cars, to the exclusive private galleries in New York. It is Zephyr’s work, hence the similar sounding moniker, that influences Sfhir the Spanish artist flown in by ARGAN Square an ALARGAN development, to create a unique piece exclusively for them. Sfhir’s tag line, “wanted for illegal art since 1995”, references the very beginnings of his art. In his youth, he had been admonished by his principal for daubing graffiti on school grounds. A progressive art teacher, instead of supporting Sfhir’s suspension, asked that the unruly student be put to work planning the graffiti out properly, and doing it again. Make it a considered piece and take care over the project. It was that art teacher who gifted Sfhir a book on graffiti in America, and from then on Sfhir was hooked on the art-form. The teacher is still in touch with the artist to this day. Looking back on it, Sfhir mentions how funny it is, the way life happens. It is an interesting thought though. What are the chances that that teacher at that time would be at that school with that student. And it would lead to all this… Having done much research, it is very evident that Sfhir’s art has changed and developed so much over time. Classically, as an artist, one would think it prurient to keep to the same recognizable method or style. “For me it’s just a game, it’s just about enjoying myself,” Sfhir comments. “I don’t want to paint a commercial line. I paint what I feel, so because of this my art has changed, because all in life changes.” The wall that Sfhir has painted for ARGAN Square is full of movement and really vibrant with a mix of new and old, traditional and modern imagery. It also shows a sense of humor that perfectly captures Kuwait, with the man in a dishdasha taking a selfie with a camel. Sfhir tells us that, “So many people are taking selfies with this. I’m happy to have captured this cultural joke!” he laughs. It is definitely going to be a part of the wall that people come to think of with great affection. Sfhir explains that the reason why he chose these visuals is that, “Young people want colors, fun images and something to open their minds because gray walls do not inspire creativity and

we need creative people in our society.” But it is not just young people per se, but people who are young at heart who will appreciate this artwork. When you see these images, it does not matter what age you are, these pictures will elicit a response from you. And the artist is very sage about it. He knows that his work is not to everyone’s taste. “You can’t please everyone all the time,” he insists, “that’s life. But art must communicate. It must do a dialogue with the observer, whether they like it or not.” Of course, a fun wall for their hangout space was also the brief that the team behind ARGAN
38

Square were looking to fill. They wanted an artist who could best sum up the community center feel that ARGAN Square is trying to create. A place for people to celebrate the senses, with food, art, music and gatherings. All events at the square are free and open to the public, a value that is deeply important to ARGAN Square and their commitment to the people here who use the premises. Completely by chance, Sfhir was actually in Kuwait a while back, working on something else. He ran into one of the ARGAN Square team and they started up a dialogue. While the team continued a global search for just
the right artist, they kept on coming back to the idea of Sfhir. He just really understood exactly how to work with their vision. So, they flew him over for a week last December to complete the wall. No pressure. With only one week, how does the artist know that he will finish a project, in the way he wants to. This must be a worry for him for his international commissions. “I don’t know if I am going to finish! It is not common to do so, always there is a mistake with the dates. It is very difficult to keep to time.” At least with this particular project, Sfhir has managed to complete the agreed plan.
And after all this work, there is also no guarantee at all that the art will last. It is the very essence of graffiti that its existence is fleeting. When asked how he feels about that, whether his work will survive or be painted over, he responds, “All in life changes, like us. We are not young forever, so my art is the same, it could change or it could be removed. For me I always have the picture, and the picture is mine. Like I have photographs of myself over the years. I am not like that now [but I once was]. For me, painting is real happiness. I was working as a computer programmer and all my family and friends said, ‘you are very lucky
because you have a great job’…but I wasn’t happy. So, one day I decided to change my life. And I decided to paint for all the rest of the days of my life. Now I am really lucky.” Many of the local artists who are trying to make their way in Kuwait have come to see this astounding international artist at work. Does he have a message for these artists? “Ultimately, to keep going on with what you are doing. It is very important what you are doing for society. Because art inspires everything!” If you can, take the time to come to ARGAN Square and have a good, long look at this artwork while you enjoy all the activities that there are
to indulge in at this lively gathering place. In the words of the artist himself, “It represents the young life here in this area; concerts, music, color, creativity and fun” and that can be both the art on the wall and ARGAN Square itself. For more on the artist follow @sfhir on Instagram or visit www.sfhir.com. To keep up to date with events and more follow @ARGANsquare on Instagram and Facebook. WHEN PUSH COMES TO SHOVE By Jawa Al Ahmad
I’ve been working for six years now. I always knew I was made for the corporate life. Vacation mode or not, I was an early riser. I loved the office atmosphere, the routine that came with a corporate job, the dependability of a steady income and a clear career path. I could not, for the life of me, understand how people could wake up whenever they wanted, rely on being creative, and form some sort of career out of it. Don’t get me wrong, most days I envy those people, but that life was not and is not for me. In 2012, many things happened in my life at once. I got my first job (after a year and a half of job hunting), I got divorced, and I was trying to figure out how to parent my one-yearold daughter. Yes, it was a stressful time, but I like to think of my life in that moment as a pivotal turning point. I was in a state of newfound independence, I needed a distraction, and I was hungry. Hungry for success, hungry for something of my own that I could control (during a time where everything seemed to be spiraling out of it) and most importantly, after fighting to end one chapter of my life, I was hungry to start building one worthy of the struggle I had endured. I majored in journalism, had a passion for the written word, and worked part time at a local magazine. I was certain I would end up somewhere along that field spectrum. Another magazine or newspaper, maybe, or a young edgy advertising company. Like most people will learn in life, what you study and what you do will be two very different things. I ended up in a random field of work, one I had absolutely no knowledge in. Again, I was eager and I was optimistic, so I hit the ground running. Very quickly, I came to love everything about my new job; the laid back atmosphere that was unusual to such a large powerful company, the location (next to my favorite coffee shop, major win), and the people. I was quick to make not friends, but more aptly described as family. I wept with a coworker who had fallen incurably ill, I made a best friend whom I consider today more of a sister and I shared personal goals, passions and life changing setbacks for hours with others. Those first few months I swore I had hit the workplace jackpot. Then something happened; I realized that I was good at what I did. The industry, to me, was easy to understand and unlike many people in it, I quickly found out that it did not bore me. I decided to pursue a certification in it. Managers encouraged me to 40
go ahead with it and even before I had registered for it were letting me know that it would take me a couple of years before I would manage to pass all the tests. I nodded and smiled and went ahead and ordered the texts I needed. Instead of applying for one exam at a time, I took all three of them on the same day. I was hungry, remember? Unfortunately, I fell ill that same week and I had to have a minor procedure at the hospital. That night, at two am as the anesthesia wore off, my father drove me home. What he didn’t know was that during that car ride, I had set my phone alarm for six am. Four and a half hours of sleep later, I was dressed and driving myself to the testing location. I spent five hours taking the various tests and by a midday I was back at home. My parents thought I had been in my room sleeping the entire time. At this point in my life I was dedicated to only two things: my child and my job. My routine consisted of waking up at dawn, making it to work before most people left their homes and spending my afternoons at home surrounded by family and seeking nothing else but an early bedtime. At work I began to find my footing. I was confident in my abilities and I pushed for more responsibilities. I wanted in on everything, I wanted to learn everything, and most importantly, I wanted to be taken seriously, which is hard when I kept being told I needed time to learn and that maybe I should for the hundredth time,
“go read a textbook or some old files”. A few weeks later, the results of the exams came in. I passed all of them. I was certified in three months; a task many people at the company had spent over a year or two to accomplish. This certification brought me to the same level as people who have been working in the field for almost a decade and to my surprise, everything went downhill for me after that. I had the attention of upper management, which at the time, was something thrilling. Apart from a woman who headed a certain department, I was the only other woman that seemed to be going places in the company. I got hungrier; but I would soon learn that there was a price to pay for being an ambitious woman. I was given a month long project to work on and when I had finished with it, I was asked to hand over the information to a male colleague who would be meeting with the other companies involved. I asked why, even though I knew what the answer was and that it was never going to be said aloud. They insisted he was senior and should be at the meeting. I argued and persisted and eventually was taken along with them to the meeting. It left a certain taste in my mouth, but I went nonetheless, proud of myself. POWERED BY PILATES
FROM ART, TO STRIKING THE PERFECT BALANCE, SHUROOQ AMIN TELLS US MORE ABOUT HER PILATES JOURNEY By bazaar staff
We know that you’re probably anticipating the full scoop on renowned artist Shurooq Amin’s latest body of work, and you’re not entirely wrong to do so. In this feature, however, we explore a different side to the artist that surely complements her powerful soul: Pilates.
42
For Shurooq, fitness has always been an important part of the artist’s life. “Throughout my whole life in general I did most activities you can think of: horse-riding, scuba-diving, rollerskating (which became roller-blading later), skateboarding, bicycling, swimming, as well as every fitness trend that came about over the years.” She begins. “I’ve always been physically active: as a child and teenager, I studied classical ballet and contemporary dance for 12 years. Then as an adult, I studied Salsa and Latino dancing.” Despite a penchant for chocolate (because, who could say no to chocolate?), Shurooq Amin is constantly seeking balance, whether it be with her personal life, her diet, fitness, or work. With ten years of practicing Pilates under her belt and a PMA (Pilates Method Alliance) degree, Shurooq decided to spread the message to help others find that sometimes elusive sense of balance. We speak more to Shurooq, the Pilates instructor, in this feature interview. What is your daily fitness routine? Pilates. Pilates. Pilates. I do my training daily: an hour of advanced Mat Pilates (which is Pilates without any machines), then some days mix it up with other forms of strength and flexibility movements, like yoga, free style dance, small weights, etc. You have to mix it up so the muscle doesn’t get lazy by getting accustomed to only one move. How did you get into Pilates? It was only after I had my fourth child that I began to feel my body really giving up on me: my spine hurt constantly, my stomach was flabby no matter how many crunches I did (at one point I was doing 200 crunches a day and I STILL had a big stomach), and I was usually tired, weak, and self-conscious in my own skin. I read everything I could on health and fitness, and decided to try Pilates (I had read that Madonna swore by it and that was good enough for me!). I tried a couple of classes in Kuwait at the time, but honestly they were not great, so I decided to do it on my own. After 10 years of practicing on my own (by reading everything I can find on Pilates both online and in books) and after seeing the transformation in my body and spine strength, I decided I wanted to take it to the next level and become a professional so I can help other people with this “magical” method. I did my research and enrolled in one of the best Pilates academies in Dubai (affiliated with a New York academy) and got my degree as a PMA (Pilates Method Alliance) certified Pilates Instructor. What does the practice mean to you? It means my life! Just like my art (which is a part of my daily life and identity and flows from my soul), Pilates is also now part of my daily life and identity, and flows from my body. For ultimate happiness, you need a balance of mind and spirit and body, right? So I have found the perfect balance on a daily basis: I wake up and drop my daughter to 43
school, then I come home and have my almond milk tea and eggs, then I head straight into my studio where I do my daily Pilates training, then I take a coffee break, followed by a few hours of painting and working in the studio. On most days I have new clients to train, either in the morning or the evening, so I take that into allowance as well. What do you enjoy the most about teaching/ Instructing? Do you feel that you also learn from this experience? Absolutely! I love teaching Pilates because I am sharing a “secret”, and helping people heal, get stronger, leaner, and healthier. Pilates strengthens your muscles by lengthening them as well, and it is for both men and women, young and old. It was actually created by a man named Joseph Pilates during his imprisonment in World War 1, and he helped the other inmates survive by teaching them some moves that he called “Contrology” at the time, because every move is done with precision, efficiency, and control. You can remain fit well into your 80s with Pilates. And believe me, my male clients can vouch that it is not easy at all! Your fans perceive you as not only an artist, but also as a force of positive change. Are you looking to combine art with your Pilates instruction? Or are you thinking of keeping the two separate from one another? No, they are two completely separate careers for me. I am aware that some people would be skeptical and wonder “Who does she think she is? Is she an artist or is she a Pilates instructor?”. That’s just human nature, and I have dealt with skepticism before. It is in people’s nature to pigeonhole you in a small box and label you, so they think they can understand you then. But when you live outside of the box, they get frustrated with you because 1) they cannot label you, and 2) you are not fitting their stereotypes. I am used to dealing with this: journalists used to ask me “So do you see yourself as an artist or as a poet?”, and I always found that narrow-minded. Nobody asks Jennifer Lopez if she is a dancer, or an actress, or an entrepreneur, or a mother. She is all of those things. Same with Madonna: singer, actress, businesswoman, mother, etc. Angelina Jolie is an actress, activist, public speaker, mother, etc. Strong independent women with vision are always under attack and skepticism regarding branching out into different fields. These women are my role models and I aspire to achieve in my lifetime multiple successes. For Kuwait, I break all stereotypes of what an Arab Muslim single mother should be: I am a mother of four but follow my (big) dreams nevertheless; I was a University professor but have tattoos all over my body, I am an artist that tackles taboo topics, I am a published writer/poet but am an Anglophone, I turned 50 this year but I live as if I am 21 and thanks to a healthy lifestyle and Pilates, my body can attest to that, and I also live transparently, without that “mask” that I 44

M
Y
always depict in my paintings. So of course people don’t “get it”. I do hope, however, that with my new Pilates practice I can inspire people and show them that you are only as old as your body and spirit: I have a teenage spirit (thanks to my father) and a strong youthful body, thanks to Pilates. 50 is the new 30. I am living proof of that. Tell us about your classes. I give private one on one classes (or private groups of 2 to 3) either in my studio, or in the client’s home, depending on whichever option is more convenient for the client. I start with asking the client some questions, then doing a Posture analysis, then customizing a Pilates mat program for that client based on their own individual needs and level. I’ve had clients with extreme back pain and I’ve accommodated for that, and some with fractured bones and injuries, and I’ve accommodated a program for them too. Anyone can do Pilates with me, whether they have never done it before in their life, or whether they are at advanced level. They should feel the difference after just one session, then see the difference after 12 sessions. What’s next for Shurooq, the Pilates instructor? I would like to establish a loyal client base this year, to really prove myself as a caring professional instructor and to see my clients transform. Once I feel I’ve achieved that, whether that takes a year or three years, I would like to eventually open my own Pilates studio, where I continue my practice of unique customized programs for clients based on their individual needs. In addition to Mat Pilates,
I will be offering Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, Barrel, Silk suspension, MOTR, and even Pole workout and Dance. I am going to be continually learning and taking courses and getting my certification and license in all of these areas. For now, regarding my one on one classes I am just focused on Mat Pilates and infusing it with all the Anatomy knowledge that I’ve gained from my training at the Pilates Academy Dubai. Our teacher trainer Chloe was incredibly meticulous: each one of our muscles had to be immaculately positioned before we did any move, our posture had to be perfect. She paid attention to every tiny detail and taught us to do the same. I owe it all to her perfectionism. Because we can’t help ourselves, please catch us up on your art! What is your latest series about? When will it be ready? I am working on a series called The Russian Doll Chronicles, which has been 2 years in the making. It will be exhibited toward the end of this year or the beginning of the next. It will be an important show for me not just because it will include new mediums (other than – and in addition to - my usual paintings), but also because of the source of its inspiration and the methodology of its evolution. At this point in time, I’d rather not give out too many details about it, so you will just have to wait and see!

THE ART OF PROVING YOUR FEAR WRONG A half-life testimony By George Tarabay
“What would others think if I fail?” “I don’t have enough seed money.” The voice that speaks in all of our heads, yet sadly it is the one that most listen to. We often regard opportunity as a potential failure and we often disregard it as an opportunity for growth and happiness. Growing up, it was often dictated to me by society that my life is pre-planned: School, university, job, marriage, have kids and pass to them the same pre-planned life. Yet, luckily to me, I was raised by two amazing creatures who often told me “your life is yours, lead it as you please.” Yet, society’s restrictive words had more impact on me than my parent’s liberating ideals. It affected my choice of career and work. I got an education of engineering and moved on to fulfill my undeclared promise to society to uphold the system. But something was not right. It brewed inside me, that feeling that there is something totally wrong but I often kept it at bay with one of the above statements. It was my way to “settle” and conform. In 2014, however, the unimaginable had happened. I lost my father, which in my book, was the hardest thing I could ever encounter. Two years later, I was in a terminal depression and a complete destruction of myself. Then it dawned on me. If I survived what was, to me, the impossible, then what else could be harder? 46
In 2016, I decided to challenge myself into a new realm of work, or for me, the creative realm. Twp years later and with genuine happiness I could tell you that I was wrong, and so are you. Was failure a part of my equation? Yes, but it was also more valuable than any college education I ever received. Was success easy? Yes, because I wanted it. The long hours I spent pursuing my dream, the worrying nights, the small jobs that never made it on my portfolio all made it easy. Easy in the sense, that it fulfilled the following equation: Success = preparation meets opportunity. Yes I was broke at one point, but that only taught me how to operate creatively in the realm of no resources. It taught me how to maximize the yield of whatever little I had. It taught me that if you break a pack of cheap noodles in half you can eat for two days. It taught me that if you immediately change out of your one business suit in the car, you can save up on sending your suit to the dry cleaners after every meeting. But most importantly, it taught me that nothing is permanent on both ends of the spectrum, be it failure and success. I could come across as just another dreamer. I am not a dreamer, a dream by definition is “imagined reality” but if that reality is a reality, doesn’t it cease to be a dream? We come back to the same question: What are you afraid of? Failure? It’s an opportunity to optimize your process and the best form of future proofing yourself.
Being broke? You won’t be the first person and surely not the last one. Being laughed at? Does this really matter in 2018? Does hearing the opinion of people who had no input on your failure or success really that important? Not being up to par with others? You’ll learn how to be better, if you really want it. Losing everything? You were born with nothing, so you’re pretty much going to end up being born again. Get out, and learn how to silence fear. If you have something itching in your stomach, attend to it. Fear is our way of staying in our comfort zones. But happiness is on the other side of comfort. There’s nothing to fear…absolutely nothing. I promise. I swear to you. Just…try to follow your guts for once. Please. Yours, George Tarabay, Ex-Miserable & Failed Civil Engineer. Currently, Partner at Veer2al Inc. Production & Marketing Boutique. Soon to be learning from another failure, and I cannot wait.

THIRD GENERATION CAYENNE SET TO CONTINUE SUCCESS STORY
PORSCHE CENTRE KUWAIT WELCOMES NEW CAYENNE MODELS By bazaar staff
Arriving as one of the most highly anticipated Porsche launches of the year, the latest generation of Porsche’s successful SUV model line is now available in Kuwait. To celebrate its arrival, a special event was hosted by Porsche Centre Kuwait, Behbehani Motors Company at the elegant Crowne Plaza Hotel, where the Cayenne and Cayenne S, were showcased to attending guests.
48
A completely new development brings the Cayenne closer to its racetrack roots, and offers greater versatility and more performance than ever before. Bringing you the best of style and power, the turbocharged engines, enhanced chassis systems, range of off-road modes and a sharper design underpin the model’s credentials as a true sports car in its segment. It doesn’t stop there, as additional enhancements to the latest generation also include intelligent assistance systems and more connectivity features aimed at offering improved driver and passenger comfort. With the all-new Porsche Cayenne, style and speed seamlessly meet. Peter Green, Group General Manager of Behbehani Motors Company, said: “Since its initial launch, the Cayenne has been one of the most popular models in Kuwait, and I have no doubt that the third generation, which offers even more sports car performance and practicality, will continue this success story. For me, the new Cayenne’s versatility is truly unique. It is at home on any road, but it is equally ready to explore new terrain. It enjoys a short sprint as much as a long road trip, and the commute to work as much as a lap on the track. It is capable of producing a superb drive experience virtually anywhere, and that is really what sets the Cayenne apart from any other SUV. We’re very
excited to be welcoming it to Kuwait.” Design evolution A bold new design stays true to the unmistakable identity of the Cayenne but delivers a more streamlined, athletic impression to complement an increased length and lower height. The pronounced bonnet, redesigned headlight contour and trademark large air intakes underline the Cayenne’s improved driving dynamics from the front. Narrower side windows, a redesigned rear wing, wide rear end with integrated light strip and wider alloy wheels further enhance and emphasise its sports car genes. The new Cayenne offers a spacious cabin, with several comfort and convenience features throughout. The luggage compartment has been increased by 100 litres, meanwhile the Porsche Advanced Cockpit concept brings the vehicle and the occupants closer through increased connectivity and intuitive controls. The centre console with Direct Touch Control and a new 12.3inch touch display for the Porsche Communication Management act as the driver’s interface to all vehicle functions. PCM can be configured for up to six individual profiles to store a large number of interior settings, as well as specifications for lights, driving programmes and assistance systems.
New driving modes A true all-rounder, five pre-programmed drive and chassis modes can be activated in accordance to the terrain via the PCM. As well as the default Onroad programme, drivers can choose between Mud, Gravel, Sand and Rocks settings to adapt to the relevant conditions. Depending on the selection made, the control unit optimally conditions the engine and chassis systems including the new Tiptronic S, the Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel system and the PSM stabilisation programme. The air suspension, PASM damper system, PDCC rolling-motion compensation and the rear axle steering are also activated if the options are fitted. More dynamic performance and improved agility The new lightweight chassis of the Cayenne has been completely redesigned from scratch to deliver the optimum balance between sporty performance and comfort, and contributes to an overall weight saving of up to 65 kilograms despite an extended range of standard equipment. With the exception of the active PASM damper system, all chassis systems are new, including the adaptive three-chamber air suspension and electric roll stabilisation. driving dynamics of the range. The Porsche Surface Coated Brakes, which come as standard in the Turbo, make a global debut and offer improved responsiveness as well as an up to 30% longer service life. For the first time, the Cayenne is available with rear-axle steering as an option, and a mixed tyre configuration. The tyres are also larger than before, ranging from 19 to 21 inches. Both developments are derived from the 911 to improve agility, stability and safety, whilst rear-axle steering also reduces the turning circle by 0.6 metres for even greater practicality.
The Cayenne S is powered by a 2.9-litre, biturbocharged V6 engine with 440 hp (an increase of 20 hp) and 550 Nm of torque. It reaches 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds (4.9 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package) and boasts a top speed of 265 km/h. With its 550 hp biturbo eight-cylinder engine, the Cayenne Turbo is the top model in the new generation and exceeds the engine of its predecessor by 30 hp, while the maximum torque of 770 Nm represents an increase of 20 Nm. It accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds (or 3.9 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package), and achieves a top speed of 286 km/h.
rear apron, exterior mirrors and door side trims are finished in the vehicle color. Adaptive sports seats with 18-way adjustment, unique stitching and raised side bolsters come as standard in the top-of-the-range model. The Turbo comes equipped with a BOSE Surround Sound System to deliver true clarity of sound to all five seats for even more drive enjoyment.
Performance driven engines The third-generation model range combines powerful and efficient engines with a new, responsive eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox which enhances capabilities thanks to shorter response times and sportier ratios in the lower gears. The sixcylinder turbo engine of the Cayenne delivers 450 Nm of torque and 340 hp, a 40 hp increase on its predecessor. It reaches 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds, or just 5.9 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package, and has a top speed of 245 km/h.
Cayenne Turbo: top of the range The Cayenne Turbo sets itself apart as the leader of the new generation. It is the first SUV to have an adaptive roof spoiler as part of its active aerodynamics. Similar to the 911 Turbo, the spoiler adapts the aerodynamics and downforce to suit the driving conditions. Visually, the Turbo is easily identifiable by its distinctive twin tailpipes, enlarged air intakes, double-row front-light modules and 21-inch Turbo wheels in dark titanium emblazoned with the coloured Porsche crest. THE THEORY OF YOUTH, ENERGY AND MONEY Sometimes, you simply have to go with it
By Ayman Nassar
As human beings in the 21st century, our prerogative is pretty simple, we’re born, finish education, get a job, get married, have a child (repeat the last part as necessary). However, what does one do when they hear the words, “I want you to look for another job”, at their current place of employment? The first reaction is usually, denial. Followed by anger, fear, bargaining and finally, acceptance. Sounds familiar? It should, as those are the five stages of grief. Make no mistake, it is a death of sorts that one goes through when they are informed their services are no longer required. Much like visiting the dentist, no one really has a backup for such a cataclysmic, life altering event. There are no Hallmark cards to be passed out, no special arrangement of botanical delights to deliver a message of, “have a great rest of your life.” It is difficult, especially with changing circumstances, mounting responsibilities etc. To find oneself planning without a plan. The greatest difficulty however lies in being dismissed through no transgression of your own. That is the greatest injustice of them all. As I sit here writing this, the here shall soon be revealed, I find myself in wonder at “the great plan”. If things had gone as expected, then right now, I should 66
have been finishing up a business trip in Jordan, preparing for a long weekend of sightseeing. Instead, I had planned a trip to the south-east Asian nation of Indonesia, specifically Bali, as a long delayed gift to myself for a decade of service in the workforce. However, that also did not play out as expected, thanks to Mount Agung and the closure of the airport. Instead I found myself doing something I never would have imagined would have occurred in my life, a spontaneous decision at the airport, with some quick Google-Fu resulted in a one and a half hour flight to Langkawi. So as I sit here, atop the sea in my floating villa, which I do not recall booking but forgot to mention that at check-in, a fringe benefit of an unexpected upgrade, overlooking pristine waters, green mountains and white clouds the likes of which can never be done justice with the lens of a camera, watching the rain drops form patterns on the water in tune with the melodic cacophony of the birds and the beasts around, the very air I breathe in so intoxicating it feels almost as if I am drawing breath for the first time. It is at this point I realize this is the purpose. If all those events had not taken place, this article would not have been written, nor would it be published for your reading pleasure. Rarely in life does everything go our way. We can plan, and hope our plans play out as we imagined, but that is all we can do, hope. Much like volcanoes that have been dormant for 50 years and suddenly can roar to life in a fiery, airport closing, ash-filling display of
dominance, so too is every aspect of our life controlled by similar forces. There is more to life than punching in at 8 a.m. and out at god-knows-when. More often than not the dream of amassing riches for world travel focuses stringently on the former, not the latter. Bank accounts burgeon with tiny fortunes of bullion, which in the end goes to either educating the fruit of our loins, or caring for ourselves in the later stages of life, the dream of world travel a distant memory, where we accept to live that dream through the eyes of others (and their camera lens). The internet is full of memes depicting the complex relationship between youth, energy and money. Early on we have ample youth and energy, but not enough money. Later on we have money, but lack youth and energy. Modern science has instructed the human body to undergo several cleanses, from wrapping one’s body in seaweed to ingesting a drink made of seaweed, in order to remain vigorous and full of vitality. What is often not practiced however, is a cleansing of the spirit. This is a cleanse of the latter form. One we each need to actively pursue so as to maintain our sanity, and to strive to perform the ultimate balancing act of professional and personal life. These might be the ramblings of the as-of-now unemployed mind, however, they might also be the starting point of a new path. Here’s hoping for the latter. SAY HELLO TO MONKI
WHERE FEEL-GOOD
FASHION MEETS SELF-EXPRESSION In this day and age, the rapid development of fashion trends can sometimes stifle your true style, rather than help you express it. With the arrival of Monki in Kuwait, you can rest easy and celebrate your stylishness with a brand that embraces self-expression and imagination! By bazaar staff

Monki is not your average fashion concept. The brand’s ethos is stemmed in empowering women and young girls to become the best version of themselves by offering them a world of great fashions that make women feel confident in their own skin. So, use your imagination, and let it run wild with Monki’s incredible collections by your side! Famous for its Scandi-cool meets Asian street style vibes, the Monki female is vibrant and creative. A dreamer and a thinker. Sustainability Suits Monki When it comes to finding and styling your favorite looks for this upcoming season, Swedish fashion brand Monki welcomes SS18 with a collection that is a clear statement of style and sustainability. The new collection redoes classic oversized and unexpected Monki Originals silhouettes with sustainable fabrics! This direction arrives as part of Monki’s ongoing mission to only have 100% sustainably sourced cotton (including organic, recycled and Better Cotton) by 2020, and the aim to use only recycled or other sustainably sourced materials by 2030. Now that’s a goal we get behind! “We have high ambitions when it comes to both fashion and materials,” says Head of Design Caroline Carlryd. “We’ve been using 100% organic cotton for our denim since 2016, and in
this SS18 collection we also use recycled polyester, polyamide and plastic. Style meets sustainability in a collection that we are very proud of.” This season, denim also gets more sophisticated while the suiting trend is refreshed with a more playful #monkistyle treatment. Two trouser suits take center stage – a kimono-style blazer with oversized puffed sleeves and flowy trousers, and a pinstriped suit with a double-breasted blazer and paperbag waist trousers. The denim features fresh new styles such as dresses, a trench coat, and an asymmetrical hem skirt. Both trends come together in the denim jacket and mid-waist, straight-legged Mokonomi jeans, both studded with pearls. Bold block stripes in black and white are featured in dresses, bags, a bow cap, and even jewelry. Just Jeans Lucky for us, Monki believes in the power of denim. A fabulous pair of jeans never gets old, and this new collection is a testament to denim’s enduring fashion influence. Honoring simplicity, a great fit and a stylish 100% organic cotton finish, Monki’s denim classics are updated with new washes and even better silhouettes. New fit Mokonoki features a cropped, straight-leg and mid-rise waist, for a fusion of vintage-inspired
design and comfort. All-time Monki favorites are reworked in new shades, with distressed detailing and frayed hems. High-waist, retro fit Moluna takes on dusty grey and stone blue. The roomy Taiki gets a white-hot finish, while the tapered-leg Moop channels the 90s with its worn-in, classic look. But brilliant denim isn’t only about jeans. Classic styles are paired with knits and slogan tees, for a nod to old Americana. The new Aria skirt features a high-waist, boxy cut with a raw-edge hem. The beloved button-up jacket, in both cropped and regular, returns as a springtime favorite. Twinning denim takes center stage, including a new checkerboard pattern skirt and matching jacket. If, like us, you’re already fantasizing about these collections, then we can also guarantee that you will love the Monki store! Planned to adapt its unique fantasy universe theme to let your imaginations run wild, the store will feature iridescent reflections, a new sky of glowing clouds, rotating turbine flowers and shoeheaven carousel to absolutely represent the unique style of Monki’s customers in Kuwait. We can’t wait! Monki is opening soon at The Avenues. For more information, visit www.monki.com. Stay updated with Monki on Instagram by checking out the hashtags #monkistyle and #monkikuwait. 71
THE RISE OF THE GROWTH HACKER By Barry Rodrigues
Isn't it funny that the new generations of super-brands like Facebook, Dropbox, Airbnb, YouTube and LinkedIn have spent hardly anything on traditional marketing? No press ads, no TV commercials, no billboards or radio jingles. Instead, they rely on a new strategy of communicating via email, text messaging and social networks, offering personal solutions and insightful conversations with their potential and existing customers through cleverly crafted content at an ideal time. Modern marketers call this - growth hacking — a method of marketing used to reach many people despite modest marketing budgets. Growth hackers have thrown out the old playbook and replaced it with tools that are testable, trackable and scalable. They believe that products and businesses should be modified repeatedly until they’re primed to generate explosive reactions. The term "Growth hacker" was first used by Sean Ellis in 2010 and growth hacking is a process of rapid experimentation across various marketing channels to identify the most efficient and effective way to grow the business. A growth hacker is described as someone whose sole objective is growth of the brand or company. As opposed to a traditionalist marketer who may or may not be a specialist in some kind of marketing function like a graphic designer or a Google AdWords specialist, a growth hacker is focused on a series of experiments, utilizing various marketing strategies trying and testing different methodologies until he or she finds something that works. A growth hacker needs to clearly understand all kinds of marketing and in other words be a generalist marketer of sorts in order to figure out the best way of helping the organization grow. In short, it is about keeping with the theme of experimentation and tweaking tactics and strategies till you find what works for you. Ideally, a growth hacker has a thorough understanding of technology, especially technologies like marketing automation and it certainly helps if he or she has a strong background in IT. Growth hacking is a relatively new concept having been around for about half a decade now and is widely used in the tech community especially by startups as one of the main strategies to grow rapidly by acquiring users and increasing revenue at a fraction of the cost of legacy companies in the past. To put it simply, it took a company like Facebook a tenth of the time it took GE to gain the same amount of brand equity. So who is a growth hacker? An engineer can be a growth hacker just as much as a marketer 72
can. What matters is their focus. A true growth hacker's focus should be growth using analytical, inexpensive, creative, and innovative methods to exponentially grow their company’s customer base. That’s the only thing that a growth hacker should care about. What's the simplest form of growth hacking I can advise you to start with? Take Instagram, for instance. Don't wait for people to comment on your posts. Instead, each day, visit a minimum of 100 of the accounts you want to work with and randomly like their posts. Maybe from time to time, you can even comment on a few. Do this as a ritual for a couple of months without fail. As boring and repetitive as it may sound, this method will definitely pay off and you will soon be able to see an improvement in your new followers coupled with increased engagement and maybe you may even be able to bring in a few new customers. A non-digital strategy in a similar vein is something as simple as calling your database of existing customers on the phone and mentioning your new product extension. This is one of the
oldest forms of growth hacking and has been working for people in the past. The idea is to spend less money, use analytical data and keep trying and testing different methods until you find the one that works best for your business. To sum it up, a growth hacker needs to clearly understand all kinds of marketing right from traditional advertising, to digital and in other words be a generalist marketer of sorts in order to figure out the best way to help the organization grow. In short, it is about keeping with the theme of experimentation and tweaking tactics and strategies till you find what works for you. Please keep an eye on this space as I unravel new ways and means to reach out to your customers and make an impact without breaking the bank.

STORIES FASHIONABLE TALES COMING SOON TO KUWAIT By bazaar staff 74
I remember strolling along the long Broadway Street in New York City, circa 2013. I ran into this beautiful store filled with the prettiest things that could meet the eye: Chic, on trend apparel, accessories, and rows of amazing shoes. Scents, nail polish, hand creams were placed attractively around the pristine store. This store was offering something special to the masses, and all that surrounded me inside was telling a tale of beauty – something making me want to delve into, and discover my boss-lady dressed stylishly from head to toe.
I spent years missing that store, only appreciating it once more every time I’d fly back to New York City. But with their recent announcement to open doors in Kuwait, & Other Stories will be entering your lives (and re-entering mine!) to make everything a little better in our closets. & Other Stories was launched in March 2013 and offers women a wide range of shoes, bags, accessories, beauty and ready-to-wear apparel. Furthermore, stylish sisters in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Qatar, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom and the United States have access to these curated styles by popping into one of & Other Stories’ amazing stores. But now, it’s our turn! & Other Stories first reached the Middle East in the spring of 2017 with the opening of their flagship store in The Dubai Mall, followed by the opening of their second Middle
East store in The Doha Festival City in Qatar. But we’re excited about Kuwait! The upcoming & Other Stories’ two floor store of approximately 1380 square metres is set to be located at The Avenues, one of the country’s premier retail destinations. NOT MY CIRCUS, NOT MY MONKEYS Or, How To Have A Less Stressful Life
By Dr Susannah Joy Schuilenberg
‘’If you really want to escape the things that harass you, what you’re needing is not to be in a different place but to be a different person.” -Seneca. Every time someone says, “Not my monkeys,” I laugh. Usually, that person is standing with his or her hands up, clearly refusing to take on whatever is the issue at hand. Research tells us that too much stress is bad for us. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health states, “We are likely to feel stressed in situations of high pressure or demand, or when we perceive a threat to our well-being or life, or feel we don’t have the resources necessary to cope with the demands placed upon us.” It’s that last sentence that I want to chat about. “… or we don’t feel we have the resources necessary to cope with the demands placed upon us.” Specifically, I want to have a little chat about the demands we place on ourselves. You know, that pesky little voice in our heads that says, “You should…” “You shouldn’t…” “You ought to…” “You have to…” Right? That voice. We all have that wretched voice (sometimes, it sounds a lot like a parent). Those unwritten rules we keep or the performance standards we expect of ourselves cause stress…and we know that too much stress is implicated as a factor in everything from anxiety to ulcers to heart attacks. "Seventy-five percent to 90% of all doctor's office visits are for stress-related ailments and complaints. Stress can play a part in problems such as headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, skin conditions, asthma, arthritis, depression, and anxiety." (APA.org) Clearly, excess stress is bad for us. When we have unwritten rules or expectations of ourselves (wherever they originate), we unwittingly do things that increase our stress load. Think about this scenario – maybe it’s familiar. You’re in your office, minding your own business, and a colleague comes and tells you about a problem that she is facing. Before you know it, you’re phoning/texting/Googling something or someone in an effort to find a solution to your colleague’s problem. And that colleague? Sitting there letting you solve the problem. Her monkey is now on your back. Or this one. You’re invited to something and you can’t say ‘No’ because you’re afraid of what the other person will think of you. Now you have two monkeys… the whole circus can’t be far behind. These behaviors are connected to stress because in taking on other people’s problems, or offering help before it’s requested, or making decisions based on trying to control what you imagine other people think of you causes stress. The feeling that you don’t have the 76
inner resources to meet all the obligations you signed up for. Instead of doing what you need to do, you’re taking care of someone else’s business. Instead of doing what you want, you’re people-pleasing. Totally stressful. Here are some tips to keep those monkeys off your back: 1. Don’t offer a solution to someone else’s problems. Instead say something like, “I can see that’s a problem for you. How are you going to solve it?” There are two key principles at work here. Other people’s problems are not our responsibility, and people only truly learn from their own mistakes and experience. We’re not actually helping when we solve someone else’s problem. 2. Don’t offer to help unless you are specifically asked. Press those lips together and refrain from volunteering to help someone unless or until that person has asked for help. Mostly, we offer to help to meet our own needs. A key principle here, too. There’s a degree of humility required in asking for help, and we all need more humility. By asking for help, we are signaling a willingness to learn. Don’t rob others of the opportunity to learn.
3. What other people think of you is none of your business. Really and truly. In theory, not caring what other people think is easy. Putting it into practice is hard. Peoplepleasing comes with a heavy price. We are always focused on imagining what others are thinking and trying to adjust our own lives to avoid any possibility of making a negative impression. What a horrible way to live. In reality, some people will like you, others won’t. In either case, it’s not the beginning or end of you. Just be yourself. As individuals, we are so much more than what other people think. Rise above the need to please everyone – this is an impossible task anyway. Habitually doing the opposite of any of these three things causes stress. Stress you don’t need. There is nothing more freeing than choosing to step back (sometimes literally) and saying, “Not my circus, not my monkeys.” Try it. The poolside Café Mint with a live DJ hosts the “Valentine Red and White Night” where you are encouraged to dress in either of the two romantic colors. Zitaat has massive potential to sweep the market with its unique features and key differentiators. I also wanted to be a part of its success story! Also the word Zitaat has a nice ring to it. Additionally, we believe we have an amazing heritage. We would like to take part in reviving it and educating the younger generations about that wonderful heritage. What is the idea behind Zitaat and what are the main services offered by the app?
Zitaat is 100% Kuwaiti Company with a primary focus on providing an online portal that takes care of all of your food needs. What do you think makes Zitaat stand out from its competitors? I see comparison as a barrier to motivation and overall achievements. Besides the customer-friendly experience, and our one- stop-shop model, we are the proud exclusive host of McDonald’s, one of the most globally loved brands.

If you regularly go online you will also see that bleems consistently has offers and promotions from vendors, and you want to make use of these while you can. Discount voucher valid today, but you don’t want to send flowers until May, then use the scheduling tool to do so. “Discount today, delivery tomorrow” so to speak. Even more of a reason to make it a pleasant habit to check the bleems app and visit the website. In Kuwait, there is an entire month of gatherings, events and celebrations occurring for Hala February. 28 days of celebration of the liberation of Kuwait will see a dazzling array of festivities, and if you are joining any friends and family at their homes then you will want to send a gift for the host. There’s no lovelier way to do this than sending flowers. For National Day itself, there is a stunning collection of flag-colored flowers, there is even one special single rose where individual petals have been picked out and colored black, green, red and white. If you know that your giftee would rather nibble to celebrate their nationalism send them a tray of chocolates in the national colors. For the more health-conscious out there, you can even find a watermelon carved tribute which sits on a bed of fruits in red, white and green! No matter what the occasion or the personality of the person you are gifting to, your loved ones deserve the finest things. Send them fine, fresh flowers same day or next day delivery or even scheduled throughout the year. Make bleems your one-stop-shop to send joy any and every day you care. Shop the collection online on www.bleems.com and follow @Bleems on Instagram to see more of what’s on offer. MR. AND MRS. GOOD STUFF A fab and fit couple with healthy values By bazaar staff
“Shireen is the boss, and I listen to and do what she says” Joel Zahlan laughs as he teasingly nudges his wife Shireen AlHasawi’s shoulder. In any husband/wife business duo, witnessing a good-natured back and forth banter between the partners is heartwarming, but watching Shireen and Joel do it (or whimsically known henceforth as “Joleen”) creates a new level of #goals to live up to. Joleen quite literally eat together, play together, and have so many interests that make them compatible. In fact, when meeting them at their restaurant Good Stuff, the effortless bond between them showed a perfect blend of professionalism, passion and friendship, combined with a true love and interest in food. “My favorite thing here isn’t actually on the menu,” Joel says to me, his eyes lighting up mischievously. Shireen in turn rolls her eyes and laughs, calling out to the waiter “Bernard! What does Joel like to eat here?” Something he dubs “The Big Stuff”: a double patty original burger with cheese, 6 or 4 piece chicken strips, fries, and bottomless Coke Zeros. This “secret menu” anecdote is a food-loving indication that clears the mystery behind the fact that the couple’s second baby (their first being an adorable fourteen year old Lhapsa Apso Terrier named Flaco) would be an eatery. “We really do love food— that’s how this started!” Shireen laughs, “we don’t like to diet and we’re not about counting calories.” And the couple both respectfully didn’t have to worry about counting calories for a while. Both Joel and Shireen were tennis players growing up, Shireen in Kuwait’s National Team, and Joel having been on his University’s team. “When we were both active athletes, we could eat whatever we wanted, because we would be exercising and training for four hours a day. Those days are gone.” And so, Good Stuff’s inception was a means for the couple to embrace their love for food without compromising their healthy values. Though being the only eatery in Kuwait offering a fully air-baked menu is enough of a novelty, for Shireen and Joel, Good Stuff isn’t only about guiltfree eating. Staying true to their slogan, “Do good, eat good,” they want to spread the word on guilt free living as well. Furthermore, Joel, whose background is in green engineering, has played a big role in curating all sustainable touches in the restaurant, from recycled menus, chairs constructed of 100 water bottles, plantbased straws, and glass-bottled Acqua Panna water. “Glass is one of the most recyclable resources in the world – it can be melted down and made into anything. We want to promote sustainability, which is why we 98
[Continued...]
use recyclable materials and touches in our menus, cutlery, seating, It’s not just about eating healthy, you have to live healthy too.” Practicing what they preach, they are indeed, “simply green in everything”. And lest we forget their air-baked philosophy! Instead of using oil, hot air is circulated around the food at a high speed, producing a crispy layer for maximum taste. The result: satisfying fries with a delightfully nutty after-taste, amazing sweet potato fries, truly healthy chicken strips, and still-succulent burgers of the beef, veggie, chicken and salmon variety. “We have good stuff here,” Joel says cheekily, realizing the pun he had unintentionally made. “It satisfies our cravings, so we know it’ll satisfy everyone else’s as well.” With that, Shireen adds: “I want everyone to know that we are not a ‘diet center’, but our food is made from better choices. You can still have your burger and fries, they just don’t have to be loaded with oil and other stuff that isn’t good for you. Good stuff only.”

THE GOLDEN AGE
Don't miss the incredible show by the Cirque Madona Bouglione By bazaar staff
The circus is an age-old tradition mankind has frequented in some form or the other since the early ages. A fantasy land where imagination knows no bounds, and where frontiers do not exist, it is where tradition meets innovation to weave together a colorful tapestry of artistic creativity. For as long as memory serves, the circus has been an exciting outlet for family-friendly entertainment. It speaks a universal language that has captivated and enthralled audiences around the world, adapting itself to suit current trends and values, while maintaining older traditions near and dear to its repertoire. Here to give us the ultimate experience of Circus-going is the Touristic Enterprises Company (TEC), who has partnered with the worldrenowned Cirque Madona Bouglione, to keep us all enthralled and entertained with the brand new original circus show, The Golden Age. This bespoke show was commissioned by TEC and designed exclusively for Kuwait. Tailored to cater to the cultural sensitives and sensibilities of the country, this entertainment spectacle delivers a unique, world-class artistic experience to the people of Kuwait, right here at home. To bring this magnificent show to life, TEC chose to work with the Cirque Madona Bouglione: a contemporary circus that brings with it the 100 year old legacy of the Bouglione family, one of the oldest and most famous names in the circus world in France. Better yet? The venue! It’s going to be held at the ultimate throwback location of all time in Kuwait, Doha’s Entertainment City. With The Golden Age, TEC and the Cirque Madona Bouglione, invite you to take a magical journey through time and space, to see the beauty and wonder of our world through the eyes of the circus. Celebrating all things traditional and fantastical about the circus, The Golden Age tells the story of the circus itself, while paying tribute to one of the world’s most beloved art forms through a dazzling display of acrobatics and performance arts. The story of the circus is told through the eyes of the heroine, who is whisked away on a journey through the ancient, modern and even futuristic traditions of the circus. The Golden Age invites the audience to go along on this surreal ride, guided by the beloved clowns, representing the origins and traditions of the circus. 102
Another great thing about this show is its international infusion. With involvement from artists and crew members from all over the world, The Golden Age is made up of an array of 75 artists and crew members coming together from countries such as France, Russia, Colombia, the United States, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Italy, Romania, Spain, and even Kuwait – to bring the show to life. This in and of itself makes the
sentiment of this circus show all the more special, giving it a meaningfulness heard globally, as well as international appeal to the masses. As for the performance itself, to go with the engaging storyline, the show features a medley of classic circus acts that have been updated with delicious modern twists. In The Golden Age, our Little Heroine witnesses the glories of the traditional circus, creating a magical world
within her mind, and before our eyes. Included are the graceful, aerial acrobatics of the French Swing and Aerial Straps, the aristocratic showmanship of the sophisticated equestrians, the droll humor and ageless wisdom of the clowns, as well as the fearless bravado of the stunt bikers. There’s also a throng of other interesting characters to follow during this journey, filled with great surprises in between. Acts to look out for include: The Liberty Horse: Illustrating the story of the meeting between man and horse, told through an elegant equestrian performance. La Poste: Coming from the noble Russian equestrian tradition, a highly skilled equestrienne tames the magnificent power of the black horse for a show-stopping performance. The French Swings: An awe-inspiring show of acrobatic excellence... eight meters up in the air. Commedia dell’arte: This old-time tradition tells the story of how the modern circus was born with the combination of this classical theatre form and equestrian shows. Equestrian Vaulting: In one of the oldest disciplines of the modern circus, this is a show of mesmerizing acrobatic skill atop of a galloping horse. Dressage: No traditional circus show is complete without this classical art form. A pure moment of grace and beauty, filled with wonderment surrounding the relationship between human and equine. Magic: A magical interlude with a humorous twist, courtesy of the beloved clowns. The Globe of Speed: Half a dozen bikers risk their lives inside an airborne steel globe, in this showstopping display of skill and intricate teamwork. The Handstand: Watch how one man defies gravity with sheer strength and incredible flexibility, keeping you at the edge of your seat at all times. Giant Balloons: A pure moment of joy, featuring what else but giant balloons. The Juggler: Grace, precision and power in this timeless tradition of the circus. The Wheel of Death: A death-defying act of valor, with a thrilling display of acrobatic skill carried out in midair. The Dove: Throughout a show filled with magical moments, this cherry on the cake is a surprise you won’t want to miss. This spellbinding spectacle will feature more than a dozen of the world’s most classic and enthralling circus performance acts, set out to captivate your senses with a breathtaking medley of art, music, technology and sheer fantasy. For that, we couldn’t imagine a better reason to venture out to Doha to watch this amazing show, wherein the modernity of old favorites are being celebrated: Kuwait, the circus, and Entertainment City. LOVE YOUR COUNTRY, LOVE YOUR FOOD
Celebrating Kuwait’s greatness with Khaneen By bazaar staff
Kuwait is a country that truly inspires brilliance. This country has birthed entrepreneurs and thinkers alike, setting a benchmark of success for the rest of the region. From strongly supporting women’s political and societal rights, to taking advantage of freedom of speech, this spectacular country has excelled in embracing tradition and welcoming in modernity, without compromising its cultural values. For those reasons, Kuwait must be celebrated. Since its founding, Kuwait has consistently taken steps to advance the comfort of its people and aid its evolution as a nation. Healthcare is topnotch here, from public and private hospitals, and a range of pharmacies, starting with the pioneering AlHajery branches, which supply all the creature comforts civilians need to improve their health and lifestyle. Education has evolved, welcoming in bilingual institutes and maintaining award-winning universities, and brilliant architecture and leisurely venues reap the liberty this country has seen over the years. While Kuwait has made incredible progress embracing change, it prides itself in keeping traditional values that we still see every day - because when Kuwait embraces the new, it in no way discards the old. Something that stands as the very example of this is Khaneen, Kuwait’s leading cultural restaurant. As a hip, modern representation of Kuwaiti tradition, Khaneen is best known for its ability to immerse each guest in a mesmerizing ambience with old music and great food. A visit to Khaneen is truly a treat from start to finish, with mouthwatering dishes that embrace Kuwaiti culture in a modern fashion, coupled with kitschy décor reminiscent of local memories of yore. From innovative appetizers, to comforting main courses and tantalizing desserts, Khaneen’s fusion of flavor is the concept’s answer to maintaining a traditional culture in a modern way, by nodding in appreciation towards the melting pot of influences Kuwait has become known to love and embody. On top of that, each of Khaneen’s locations celebrates something so comforting and beautiful about Kuwait that only we, those who call Kuwait home, can fully understand. For example, as hot as it gets for a few months between late spring and mid-autumn, the rest of the year offers beautiful weather to dine alfresco – an activity that is so quintessentially Kuwaiti, it has 104
become a strict ritual to delve into between the months of November, (sometimes even October!) to April. Are you seeking to share a delicious meal with plenty of family and friends, and need an unbeatable outdoor location? Khaneen Murouj is ideal, night or day. Whether you’re looking to indulge in a brunch, lunch or dinner of all your old favorites, topped off with cardamom-infused hot Karak, something about being there amidst the lush greenery provides a satisfying experience. If you’re the type to kick it old school, then Khaneen’s Mubarakiya location is your spot. Here, you’ll surround yourself in Kuwait’s Golden Years, with the scents and memorabilia of old Kuwait City (not to mention the Mubarakiya souks) surrounding you, this kitschy location is the perfect reminder of why Kuwait is so charming to begin with. A little more traditional in feeling, you’ll blend in perfectly with the untainted and maintained culture of Mubarakiya. Pro tip: it’s the ideal place to dig into some Khaneen Fries after shopping! And speaking of shopping, we’re excited to announce that Khaneen is just about to open in Phase 4 - The Avenues. Not only is The Avenues one of Kuwait’s post prized attractions, but spending a day there ignites something so familiar about the sensation of shopping till you drop, feeling hunger hit, and being too tired to go home for a comforting meal. They understand that you feel they deserve the finest things in life, and you want to be the one to provide these pleasures to the people you really care about. On this feast day for lovers on the 14th, can there be anything more delightfully romantic than perfumes as a present to give to your amore? FOR THE LOVE OF LAVAN
Exploring the flavors of India, one dish at a time By bazaar staff
When it comes to Kuwait’s Indian cuisine scene, we can all agree that it is definitely both vibrant and varied. From fun destinations for street food classics, to a deluxe, indulgent meal at a five-star hotel, Kuwait’s penchant for Indian cuisine cannot be stopped. After all, it is deeply rooted in this nation’s heritage, when spices from the Asian subcontinent made it to our shores and the greater Arabian peninsula. Today, this culinary heritage is celebrated at House of Lavan, Kuwait’s latest Indian dining concept that seamlessly fuses exquisite, authentic flavors presented in an artfully designed, contemporary atmosphere. You can’t miss Lavan’s location in Kuwait City, as it is situated in the classic Sharq distict, on Khaled Bin Al Waleed St. As soon as you step through the restaurant’s majestic wooden doors, your mood is instantly uplifted. Completely bathed in natural light, bespoke shades of teal bring to life a backdrop of incredible wood detailing adorning the walls. Mid-century inspired chairs, completely carved out of wood, and a lavish, saffron colored sofa will command your attention, which is then interrupted by the tantalizing aromas rising from the kitchen. Now that the mood is set, the time has come to feast. For our Lavan experience, we first needed to start off by truly understanding the meaning of this establishment’s name. Translated from the Sanskrit word for ‘salt’, Lavan pays tribute to this universal ingredient that adds the perfect balance to any dish. Salt is restorative by nature, and this notion stayed with us as we began to sample Lavan’s delightful dishes. At Lavan, history serves as inspiration to deliver diners with original, authentic regional Indian flavors done with flair. The friendly staff will happily guide you through the menu, taking their time to explain the history and origin of each and every dish. We began our foray with the Sweet Potato Chat, a street food classic, prepared with roasted sweet potato marinated in a sweet yogurt that is cut by aromatic mint and mango chutney, tamarind sauce, and gram flour crisps. From the very start, we fell in love with the expert balance of flavors and textures in this dish, only to find ourselves eager to try the roast baby potato rendition. From chat, we moved on to the Chicken Curry Leaf, a simple appetizer dish that still packs bags of flavor from the signature Lavan curry masala and sweet chili sauce. 110
You can’t miss the traditional tandoor at Lavan, as the aromatic spices are released by the fiery coals of this special oven to first evoke a sense of wonder when you walk into the restaurant, long before you’ve laid your eyes on the amazing tandoor dishes that are on offer! We felt quite adventurous, and decided on the Lamb Seekh Kebeb—with lots of chili! As soon as the dish arrived to our table, the beautiful scent of the char of the tandoor fire wafted through, as well as the fragrant fresh coriander, ginger, garlic, chili and incredible spices that went into these fine pieces of ground lamb. Find more amazing options from the tandoor, from chicken tikka, Hamour tikka to glorious lobster. To complete the experience, we opted for the fluffiest, flakiest and easily some of the best tandoor butter naan that we’ve ever tried in Kuwait. You can get your naan with garlic, cheese, or even basic and plain at Lavan, and you can even order classics like Roti and Paratha— all prepared from the magnificent tandoor. As with any Indian restaurant, we all hark for classics like curry, Butter Chicken and biryani. At Lavan, these classics are completely elevated to deliver an unmatched experience. We cannot suggest the Bamboo Dum Biryani enough— especially with its immaculate presentation! Once again, all our senses were suddenly heightened as the dish made its way to our table. Prepared in a circular bamboo pot of sorts, every element in this dish sang. The saffron basmati rice was moist and fluffy, the chicken breast so succulent and tender, the crunch of the cashews offered a pleasant textural crunch, all rounded together by the expertly balanced spices. Looking for something different? Then go for the Lavan Special Biryani, prepared with goat meat, cashew nut, coconut paste, special spices and their beautiful saffron basmati rice. As for the richly spiced butter chicken, it was pleasantly light and refreshing, and didn’t weigh down our appetites. We asked for more chili, and the friendly staff rushed over an overflowing plate of fresh peppers. After our wonderful culinary journey, the time for dessert came, and with it, a modern take on classic kulfi with the Caramel Kulfi and Gulab Jamun with Homemade Saffron Ice cream. We first dug our cutlery into the traditional Indian dumplings, soaking up as much of that addictive sugar syrup as we possibly could, only to find that sweetness sharply cut by the zing of the saffron ice cream. From there, we indulged in the super-interesting caramel kulfi with pistachio and cotton candy, and once again we noticed the Lavan’s fine attention to flavor, as well as texture, which made this dessert truly sublime to experience. Pair any of Lavan’s lovely desserts with your choice of coffee or tea, and you’ve got it made. We simply cannot wait to revisit Lavan to try more of their refined delicacies. Visit House of Lavan in Sharq, Khaled Bin Al Waleed St. Lunch is served from 1:00 p.m. onwards! For more information, follow @HouseofLavan on Instagram. 111
MELISSA – UNMASKED By Nejoud Al-Yagout
Whenever Melissa Azavedo sings at a performance, everyone is hypnotized by her angelic voice and unassuming stage presence. She still gets surprised when she hears others praise her, and it is this innocence and humility that makes one want to draw closer. There is an air of mystery to her, as though she is not only singing, but revealing her own story in the process. Though we cannot know her story, we will at least try to capture a little bit of what it means to be Melissa... Miguel de Cervantes once said that "[he] who sings frightens away his ills." Agree? Well, I would not fully agree to that because I believe that even listening to music is therapeutic in nature. But from a singer's point of view, I do experience a sense of peace and happiness whether i am singing alone or in public. It does not matter how many times I perform, but a few minutes before any event I feel 112
afraid and a sense of nervousness. Miraculously, all of it disappears once I start singing. So, yes the act of singing does help one feel liberated. What do you look for in the crowd when you sing? I look for nothing. The reason being that it is vital for everyone - whether a musician or not - to embrace their real self. This thought has really changed my perspective of life. The more you look for approval, the more insecure one becomes, but with that being said it is a 'choice' of how we deal with praise or criticism. A crowd comprises of people from different backgrounds and different walks of life and you cannot really look into peoples’ minds separately. Music unites people and oneness is possible when the singer is able to make individuals empathize and communicate the message of the song whether lyrically or musically. Do you have any rituals prior to a performance? Singing is a gift from God, so I always pray and spend some time alone. You are known as a humanitarian. How can you encourage fellow singers to use their voice to awaken their respective communities?
As mentioned earlier, empathy is one way your priority changes. When you see yourself in the other, the way you think and act changes for the best. You do not have to sing to be a good human, but the tongue is a weapon that could hurt someone or heal a broken heart. So watch your words and continue to be positive and kind even though it is hard sometimes. You will feel yourself grow stronger and focused on what life has to offer you. Let’s share our voice for the betterment of the world. Finally, do you think music will feature prominently in the next chapter in our evolution of consciousness? That's a tough question. Firstly, for me, consciousness is being self-aware about one's actions and surroundings. Therefore, it is connected to the mind, body, experiences and culture. So when I meditate about music and consciousness, music does have the power of bringing people together despite our differences, but I think it’s the 'motive' of the song that directs the quality or direction of consciousness.

SHINING STARS
Don’t miss out on these limited-time yummy dishes at Mais Alghanim! By bazaar staff
What is a star but something that burns brightly and fades with just the fond memory left to ponder. Well Mais Alghanim is determined to bring the stars back to life with their new Stars Menu. Perhaps you remember tasting something wonderful, recommended it to friends and family and then realized the dish was only a part of a promotion and is no longer available? Put that disappointment aside, as the most popular restaurant promotion offerings are back! The Stars Menu is only available in the restaurants in the Sharq and Spoons Mall locations, and for a limited time only. One thing that contributes to the success of Mais Alghanim is that, if you ask those who have been, the food is classically good. Always consistent, the kitchens produce great-tasting, high-quality dishes. Each person asked can name you something they savor and will only go to the restaurants for. Plus, their local twist on traditional fare keeps you coming back for more. The Kuwaiti favorite ma’abouch is a paste of ingredients including garlic and green or red chilies that can be found in most local homes. This lends a piquant edge to the Stars Menu choices of hummus and green ma’abouch, and the deeply smoky Moutabal and red ma’abouch. If you love hummus you have to taste the halaby which is mixed with pistachios and mint. Unexpectedly it is the chopped pickles in this hummus that gives the crunch, and the nuts bring a softness to the tang of the pickle. It is possible to keep on arguing amongst ourselves about whether this next dish hails from Armenia or Turkey, but the one place you really want to make sure your Manti does come from is the kitchens of Mais Alghanim. Their rendition of this dish is as textured and tasty as you could hope for, with the meat-filled, fried dumplings adding a crunch to the yogurt topped dish. There can be nothing quite as satisfying as succulent chicken and the triangles of Saj Wrapped Chicken Shawarma is moist, perfectly seasoned, and with just the right amount of garlic. Do ensure you order at least two triangles per person. One is not enough, as you will want to make certain with a second piece that this appetizer is as delicious as you first thought! It was hard to not finish all the 114

starters especially as they were accompanied by the best Iranian bread, perfect for scooping up all the deliciousness. But, the mains were on the way so we had to show some restraint. That restraint did not mean stopping eating, it meant tucking into a salad! We tried the Basket Salad first. With fried pieces of cauliflower, this salad has some depth to it. The bread basket is thin, fried and shaped similar to a taco basket that you might find in a Mexican restaurant. The salad is creamy and rich, the result of a well-paired Tahini and yogurt mixture. A load of Romaine lettuce is liberally covered in the delectable dressing and pickles
and sesame seeds cut through the lot with their particular flavor profiles. A lighter salad that packs an even greater flavorsome punch is the Rocket Salad. Rocca leaves are tossed in a homemade vinaigrette with pristine white strands of twisted Majdoulah cheese strewn across the top. Sweet and ripe pomegranate seeds which complement the barely salty cheese, are stirred through the entire salad with a few raw walnut halves, making this salad as beautiful to behold as it is to taste and eat. For the mains, we decided to go on a global journey from the Stars Menu and went
for Chinese, Indian and Turkish influences. Just as we finished up with our appetizers the mains made their way across to our table. Thin, diagonal slices of scallion decorate the Lamb Black Pepper. With red and green capsicum tossed through the richly thick oyster saucebased dish, you will want to take your time and luxuriate in the depth of flavors. The massive mound of white rice with it is exactly what you need to enjoy the experience of this Chinese offering. Placed on a bed of biryani rice, the presented lamb shank is a large, juicy piece of halal, locally sourced meat and it falls easily off the bone using just a fork. Delicate coconut comes through in the accompanying Chef’s gravy. There is more than a passing reference to Indian influences in this flavorful (but not spicy) meal. This has proven to be a runaway hit with most Mais Alghanim Stars Menu customers. The culinary journey continues along the map from East to West with the Karmuze Taouk. The chunks of Turkish spice marinated chicken rest splendid next to a pile of Batata Harra. The side is well executed with the potato proving light and fluffy once you bite through the lightly seasoned skin. Sticking with Turkish traditional dishes we move on to dessert. There are only two, so you may as well order them both! The Turkish Pudding is a take on mouhalabiah with a Mais Alghanim twist. Lightly toasted coconut and slivers of toasted almonds are scattered all over the top of this jelly-like milky pudding with a drizzle of heavenly honey trails. You may want to share the lotus fondant with ice cream dessert. This is a deeply chocolatey affair with a layer of lotus paste baked into the main “cake” which adds a caramel touch to the whole thing. The vanilla ice cream is homemade and sits endearingly on a small, round cookie, inviting you to eat it. Carefully, you want to fit a piece of each different element onto your spoon to get the best out of this devilishly delectable dessert. With Mais Alghanim’s Stars Menu, you can choose from the best of each menu offering from the last year over 2017. The best, as chosen by you, the customer, curates the star dishes all together, with a unique family offer to top it all off! The Result? A menu that cannot fail to be enjoyed by all, as it is truly a Stars Menu by name and nature.
Mais Alghanim is located on the Gulf Road near the Kuwait Towers (2225 1155) and Spoons Mall, Mahboula (2225 0655). For delivery orders, please call 1821 155. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
WRONG CREATURES
VOICENOTES
By Joe Satriani
By Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
By Charlie Puth
Joe Satriani released his 16th solo album titled What Happens Next. The guitar virtuoso is joined on the new record by his Chickenfoot bandmate and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith along with Black Country Communion mainman and bassist Glenn Hughes. In addition, Satriani will head out on the road with dates on the G3 tour planned. The guitarist will be accompanied by Dream Theater’s John Petrucci and Def Leppard’s Phil Collen. He says: “I think part of its charm and its mojo is in the chemistry of having three top guitarists share what they do on stage.”
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club return to their trademark sound: scuzzy bass, slurry, heavily processed vocals and shrieking guitars on "Little Thing Gone Wild," the caustic first taste of their upcoming Wrong Creatures album. Each member battles for the listener's attention in "Little Thing Gone Wild." Leah Shapiro smacks out crushing drum patterns, Peter Hayes' guitar is rudely high in the mix, and Robert Levon Been's bass playing is terse and pushy. The track was produced by Nick Launay, a veteran with four decades of recording experience.
Months after slaying us all with his incredible single ‘Attention’, Charlie Puth is back at it again with the second track to be taken from his sophomore album VoiceNotes. ‘How Long’ is Charlie’s latest infectious offering, which was released after a lot of teasing on social media. Now, the wait is finally over as ‘How Long’ is here in all its glory. It’s safe to say that we’re already obsessed – if you thought ‘Attention’ was catchy, you’ve heard nothing yet. ‘How Long’ has a slick yet fairly stripped back vibe which showcases the singer’s vocal range.
MANIA
SHAPE THE FUTURE
THE SNAKE KING
By Fall Out Boy
By Nightmares on Wax
By Rick Springfield
Last year, Fall Out Boy dropped a new, EDM-heavy track called “Young and Menace” and said its new studio album was coming in September. The song never caught on like past Fall Out Boy hits, and two months later, the band countered with “Champion,” a track much more in the vein of the 2014 smash “Centuries.” Mania had been pushed back to a Jan 2018 release date, according to a Twitter post from vocalist-guitarist Patrick Stump. “The album just isn’t ready, and it felt very rushed,” he admitted. “I’m never going to put a record out I genuinely don’t believe is as strong or valid as the one that came before it .’’
Nightmares on Wax's next album, Shape The Future, has been released. Like George Evelyn's previous seven full-lengths, the 12-track LP will come out on Warp Records, the label that's been releasing his music since the late 80s. It's his most collaborative record to date, with cameos from UK soul singers like Andrew Ashong, Jordan Rakei and former Zero 7 vocalist Mozez. Canadian rapper Allan Kingdom, who's worked with Flume and Kanye West, guests on a bonus version of "Citizen Kane." "Making Shape The Future, I've journeyed both inwardly and outwardly all over the world and both physically and emotionally," said Evelyn.
Rick Springfield has got the blues, at least on record. The Grammy-winning rocker released The Snake King, his first blues-oriented album. “All my first bands that I played in as a kid in Australia were blues bands, trying desperately to copy as best we could the amazing music we were hearing coming out of the Chicago blues scene and the older stuff from the deep South,” said Springfield. “My guitar playing was always influenced by the same guys who influenced all the English players I grew up with, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, etc. Everyone was playing their version of what they heard from the Blues and the Chicago scene.”

TURKISH GRILL Freshly grilled to order By bazaar staff
There’s nothing like Turkish-style barbecue. The succulent meat, the perfectly charred chicken – soft bread, delicious, crisp salads and mouthwatering dips – it makes for a perfect meal. The thing about finding Turkish cuisine when you’re not in Turkey, however, is that it usually involves leaving the house, going to a sit-down restaurant and enduring the outside world. Where that could be an extremely enjoyable experience, sometimes, you just don’t have the time, or, you aren’t in the mood, and that’s totally fine! But does that mean your cravings should suffer? Turkish Grill is the perfect compromise. Here, all your Turkish food fantasies can be fulfilled, and the best part is, you don’t even have to leave your house! Known best as a pick-up and delivery concept with one dine-in location at Al Bahar Center on Tunis Street, this eatery has been delivering mouthwatering goods to those inclined since 2003. Offering a range of Turkish staples purely of the grill and meze variety, Turkish Grill offers an array of different flavors to satisfy your need to embrace the taste of Istanbul. When we had a hankering for the taste of Istanbul to brighten up an otherwise dull workday, we pulled out our hard copy of the latest TG menu from our latest Dining and Entertainment Guide and got to ordering. What we like about TG is that they maintain authenticity to the Turkish culture by keeping their menu very Turkish. All menu items are listed as their original Turkish names, meaning that when ordering through their call-center service, refrain from saying “La7m sho2af” for meat skewers, but instead, say “Tike” – even though it isn’t chicken. Same goes for “Tavuk Gogus” (grilled chicken breast) and “Sebzeli Kebab” – the no-nonsense approach to the classic ground beef kebab we all know and love. When you think Turkish Grill, you automatically think kebab – and so, when testing out the TG experience, we definitely went a little wild with their kebab offerings. We list an order for all of these goodies to sample, finding a lot more surprising terms on the way: Sigara Borek (Cheese rolls), Icli Kofte (kibbeh) and Yaprak Sarmasi (stuffed grape leaves), to name a few. But, since we love all those things, they were ordered as well! In fact, because Turkish Grill is so affordable and 118
plentiful in option, we ordered basically the entire menu. What – we were hungry! And good thing we were, because their portions are quite generous, which isn’t always the case when prices are low! We had between our team an order of Adana Kebab, spicy and hearty, Beyti Kebab, Heybetli Kebab (Chicken) Tavuk Shish (also chicken), our old friend Tavuk Gogus and Tike skewers. Couple that with some of their homemade
Lavash sandwich rolls, in the form of Adana and Gogus, and we were in for a huge feast. Because the restaurant read our minds, they also sent over some of their exciting house-made dips and not to mention their meze additions. In addition to their kibbeh, Cheese rolls and stuffed grape leaves, we had at hand their house tabbouleh and fattouch, fries, potato cubes, and dips meant to be
paired with their gorgeous lavash bread like Cacik (yogurt with cucumber), humus, Patlican Yogurtlu (an eggplant-based beetroot, yogurt dip) and Patlican Tahinli (a delicious rendition of babaghanoush). This created a delicious feast for us, which we found to be extremely shareable between 5 diners and an occasional picker. The experience, however, enlightened our buds on a whole new level. What we really enjoyed about our Turkish Grill feast was the taste that each item delivered, introducing a new perception of Turkish food to our minds. In the region, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to grills, but Turkish grills present a specific taste and craving that produces fine-dining quality in a casual and versatile atmosphere. Turkish Grill mainly operates as a delivery service, meaning that it’s an operation that’s meant to be eaten in the comfort of your own home. At the same time, it’s the perfect type of cuisine to fancy up when needed, especially for gatherings and dinner parties. While chowing down, we also discussed how their TG Live service would make for a great social event. Turkish Grill apparently brings their equipment to your venue of choice – even if it’s your own backyard – and grills a set menu for you right there to enjoy! Though we think their delivery holds up really well, we can only imagine, based off its quality service, we can only imagine the sensory exploding experience provided by “fire-to-plate”, as grills are intended to be. The charring on the Gogus in particular, is what we found ourselves salivating over the most. The live station isn’t your only option to enjoy that hot from the grill taste, however. Because all of Turkish Grill’s top-secret food sources are all so quality (and secret for a reason! They don’t want you tracking down the local kibbeh master who makes all their delicious Icli Koftes to stock up!) their product’s deliverability offers great taste and satisfaction every time. Couple that with the fact that every single menu item is freshly prepped and grilled to order, each TG experience is made bespoke for their valued customer, whether you choose to order in at home, enjoy their catering or visit their only dine-in location, the food court in Hawally’s Al-Bahar Center. So really, whichever way you enjoy your Turkish Grill, you won’t ever lose. In fact, our craving has strangely reinstated itself as we write this. Turkish Grill for lunch, anyone?
Turkish Grill has 7 pick-up and delivery branches across Kuwait, and one dine-in location at the Al Bahar Center food court on Tunis Street, Hawally. You can order Turkish Grill by calling their dedicated call center at 1847 455. Also, check out their catering options on www.bilbayt. com. COLEMAN OFF-ROAD GO-KART
WOOLSEY OUTDOOR PING PONG TABLE
KLIPSCH HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER
TELEAVIA RETRO TV CONCEPT
MANTA5 HYDROFOIL BIKE
TRACK1 OFF-ROAD SKATEBOARD
You most probably know Coleman for their outdoor gear, but this piece of kit is not the cooler or lantern you might be thinking of. The KT196 go-kart might be small, but it seats two and carries up to 400lbs. A 196cc motor puts out 6.5 horsepower through a CVT automatic transmission, and full suspension and disc brakes are at all four corners. All in a package perfectly sized for a campground runabout‌or any other site that you can make into a GP circuit.
Inspired by the classic Teleavia P111 tube set created by CitroĂŤn DS designer Flaminio Bertoni, this Teleavia Retro TV Concept is a dream come true for those tired of hanging boring rectangles on their walls. Its curvy design extends past the white exterior to the screen itself, with corner-hugging curves reminiscent of smartphones. A brown leather handle for portability and remote completes the vintage-looking package.

Providing a cycling experience on the water, Manta5 Hydrofoil Bike is a unique way to enjoy your favorite lakes, streams, and rivers. Its carbon fiber-reinforced nylon propeller is paired with a 400W electric motor, giving you a boost when pedaling alone isn't cutting it. Carbon fiber hydrofoils are optimized to provide lift and reduce drag while making it possible to handle everything from a quiet lake to choppy ocean surf.
To honor the rich audio history at Klipsch, the Heritage line was unveiled this year. This headphone amp is one of the standouts. Crafted with formed aluminum and genuine walnut veneer, the amp is capable of tackling digital audio up to 24-bit / 192 kHz resolution. It also features an asynchronous USB interface and both quarter-inch and XLR balanced outputs. You can also use it as a miniature preamp for a standard stereo system, should you wish to facilitate the feature.
Thanks to a set of tank-like tracks and oversized front wheels, the Track1 Off-Road Skateboard can handle trails most boards can't even attempt. It has an electric powertrain capable of hitting 20 mph, tackling 50% grades, and traveling up to 15 miles per charge. It works on sand, snow, dirt, and on the street, weighs just 60 pounds, in part thanks to a deck made from carbon fiber and Kevlar.

PERSEPOLIS RISING: BOOK 7 OF THE EXPANSE
YEAR ONE (CHRONICLES OF THE ONE)
THE SILENT CHILDREN
Persepolis Rising is the seventh novel in the New York Times bestselling The Expanse series, and is now a Netflix series. In the thousand-sun network of humanity's expansion, new colony worlds are struggling to find their way. Every new planet lives on a knifeedge between collapse and wonder, and the crew of the aging gunship Rocinante have their hands more than full keeping the fragile peace. In the vast space between Earth and Jupiter, the inner planets and the Belt have formed a tentative and uncertain alliance still haunted by a history of wars and prejudices. On the lost colony world of Laconia, a hidden enemy has a new vision for all of humanity and the power to enforce it. New technologies clash with old as the history of human conflict returns to its ancient pattern of war and subjugation. But human nature is not the only enemy, and the forces being unleashed have their own price.
With one drop of blood, the old world is gone forever. And in its place, something extraordinary begins. They call it 'The Doom' - a deadly pandemic that starts on a cold New Year's Eve in the Scottish countryside. There's something mysterious about the virus and the way it spreads. As billions fall sick and die, some survivors find themselves invested with strange, unexpected abilities. Lana, a New York chef, has the power to move things and people with her will. Fred can summon light in the darkness. Jonah, a paramedic, sees snatches of the future in those he touches. Katie gives birth to twins, and suspects that she has brought fresh magic into the world, along with new life. But The Doom affects people differently. Along with the light, a dark and terrifying magic will also rise. As the remaining authorities round up the immune and the 'Uncannies' for testing, Lana, and others flee New York in search of a safe haven. The old world is over, and Year One has begun...
The boy studied the bruise turning yellow at the base of his neck. With quick fingers his mother tightened his tie, and pulled his collar high above it. Her eyes alone said, We will not speak of this...Years later, a man is found shot dead in a local park. On his phone is a draft text: I can’t keep this secret any longer. The recipient is unnamed. Detective Robyn Carter knows this secret is the key to the case, but his friends and family don’t offer any clues, and all her team have to go on is a size-ten footprint. Then a nurse is found in a pool of blood at the bottom of her staircase, and a seemingly insignificant detail in her friend’s statement makes Robyn wonder: Are the two bodies connected, and has the killer only just begun? When another body confirms Robyn’s worst fears, she realizes she’s in a race against time to stop the killer before they strike again. But just as she thinks she’s closing in, one of her own team goes missing.

COS SPRING SUMMER 2018 The COS Spring Summer 2018 collection explores organic shapes and natural materials while taking inspiration from the past, present and imagined future. The result is a series of understated modern classics, composed in interchangeable modular ways. The qualities of paper are integral to the collection and are evident from design conception and throughout the work process; from the pattern cutting, to the paper draping and 3D work. This informs new proportions and details which are executed in a clean and precise way. The influences of time are apparent in the artisanal work methods and reinvented modern pieces which have a futuristic tone and quiet drama. Three-piece tailoring is reimagined to incorporate new fabrics, draped and voluminous pieces alter silhouettes and collapse on the body. Classics have been revisited in surprising materials and details are sometimes carefully misplaced. Designs are brought to life by cottons in a range of forms - textured, coated, crisp, crumpled; whilst knits of various weights are crafted from barely-there silks, chunky paper yarns and starched summer wools. Technical innovations like coated Tyvek are interspersed throughout to reimagine timeless pieces. COS is located at Marina Mall and The Avenues. For more information, visit www.cosstores.com, and follow them on Instagram @cosstores and Facebook: facebook.com/cos.

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 22
ARIES MAR 20 – APR 19
Social events could put you in touch with some exciting new people. They may either share a current interest of yours or bring you opportunities. If you're currently romantically involved, expect these developments to bring you closer together. If you aren't, you could meet someone new and exciting. Whichever it is, by the end of the month your mind is likely to be jumping. Enjoy!
Your mind always tends to be quick and agile, Aries, but now you might find it going a thousand miles an hour as a result of intriguing new information received through books, newspapers, television, or the Internet. Discussions with others could also contribute. You might decide to embrace some innovative new concepts that could lead to an expansion of your horizons. At some point, go for a workout. You need to balance the mental with the physical.
VIRGO AUG 23 – SEP 22 Contacts made through friends or colleagues, perhaps younger people, might bring new ideas for bettering your home life. Perhaps a new housemate wants to move in, you could install some new equipment, or you might even have the chance to move to a roomier place. These are only ideas to be considered, however. Final decisions should wait for a later day. There are still some facts that you need to learn first.
LIBRA SEP 23 – OCT 22 Discussions with close friends, children, and romantic partners take on an especially exciting aura this month. New information is likely to be circulated that might make a big difference both in your household and in your community. A new field of interest, a new intellectual search, as well as improved communication with those close to you could enrich your life at this time.
SCORPIO OCT 23 – NOV 22 Visitors to your home might engage you in discussions of innovative ways to increase your income. This may either be through the use of computers or through other forms of modern technology. You might find that you have a talent for such activity that you never realized before. Open up your mind, but don't put your money where your mouth is yet!
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
TAURUS APR 20 – MAY 20 Some new equipment made available for your use might prove fascinating, and you're apt to want to learn as much as you can about how it works. You might want to try your hand at sound or video recording. Art combined with modern technology could well be a primary focus for now. Learn as much as you can, and have some fun in the process.
GEMINI MAY 21 – JUN 21 You could find yourself searching for a particular piece of knowledge that you need in order to move on with something you're doing. You'll probably find it, perhaps through a friend or colleague. Or else it might show itself suddenly, making you want to shout, "Eureka!" After that, it's smooth sailing all the way. You'll be able to use this information to accomplish whatever you need and be successful.
CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22
AQUARIUS JAN 20 – FEB 18 The opportunity to make a change in your life, which you may have been contemplating for a long time, could finally manifest itself. This could be a move to a new neighborhood, a return to school for an advanced degree, an entirely new profession, or all of the above. Whichever it is, expect to spend a lot of time throughout the day discussing it with friends and family. Then, move ahead with whatever plans you have.
You might find yourself working with an exciting group of people. Perhaps this involves an opportunity to increase your skills or a new project or even a whole new job. Your mind is quick and especially innovative, so don't be surprised if you're able to contribute far more than you would have expected. Don't think your efforts will go unappreciated. Friends grow closer to you and acquaintances could become friends.
Your mind is sharp, quick, and full of ideas. Group activities should prove especially stimulating for you at this time. By the end of the month, your brain should be buzzing. Take a walk and clear your head before you go to bed or else you'll never be able to get to sleep.
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 19
Newspapers, books, and TV are apt to bring a lot of new, exciting, and useful information your way. This might set your mind going in such a direction as to bring new ideas for projects or business opportunities your way. Expect a stimulating period, and by the end you're likely to have opened up new doors for yourself.
PISCES FEB 19 – MAR 19 Paperwork involving money could be a real drag, but someone close to you might just show you a way to get it done quickly and efficiently. Your mind is especially sharp, so this is just the time to try to expand your intellectual horizons along with your technical skills. Go to it!
