Int April has always been a very special month for us bazaarites. For starters, we’ve always been big advocates of humans doing everything they possibly can to protect the earth by recycling, reducing our carbon footprint, raising more awareness about global warming (regardless of what the Republicans have to say about it), participating in and promoting beach clean-ups, helping to better educate kids (and many grownups as a matter of fact), and anything else possible to help Mother Nature survive in this wasteful, industrial, consumer-oriented world of ours.

The bazaar team...

Here at bazaar, we like to consider the theme of sustainability from every aspect. Kuwait goes Green this April with the continuing Hasadd campaign that introduces how technology and sustainability can go hand in hand. The highlight of the campaign will include a celebration of Mother Nature on ‘International Mother Earth Day’, with programs designed to boost Kuwait’s contribution toward nature conservations on a global scale. We also explore the idea of sustaining our communities through the works of wonderful individuals who are constantly giving back to Kuwait through their vision. We ventured to Mayar Center in Shuwaikh to speak with the beautiful mind behind bespoke local jewelry concept Th’haba Abrar Alebrahim, whose journey with jewelry making now includes a cultural platform that helps shed light on the importance of collaboration and showcasing the talents of other individuals in the community at Kittab Th’haba. From there, we headed to Salmiya to hang out with the ever-so-talented Sarah Chouari and her mission to inject art into our everyday lives with ArtSpace Kuwait to broaden our community’s horizons. We also visited Al Hamra Tower to speak with Project 5 Miles founder Bader Alessa to talk about the importance of making the wholesome practice of yoga accessible to the masses— kudus to team P5M!

Perhaps when you wear a mark of sustainability, then people would take note. This is why in this issue, we sit with H&M’s Creative Advisor, Ann-Sofie Johansson. We learn all about the iconic brand’s latest Conscious Exclusive collection fashioned entirely out of sustainable materials and their trademark registered, all-new Bionic yarn, proving that conscious fashion is a reality and not a theory! We also pay heed to the tradition of handcrafted shoemaking at Fratelli Rossetti at Arraya Center, where the Italian design house forgoes big-box manufacturing and rather celebrates the artisanal craft honored for decades.

Finally, we know you’re still searching for excellent dining choices to sustain your hunger (pun very much intended). While we can lecture you on how important it is to scale things back this April, we won’t. Go on and indulge at Life with Cacao at 360 Mall, as not only have they revamped their look, but their menu as well! Happy reading! Ahmed El-Adly

BYPRODUCTS OF DEVELOPMENT BY ABDULLAH AL-MUTAIRI Date: April 11 –April 27 Location: Sultan Gallery Focusing on the impact industrial expansion has had on the bodies and identities of youth in the region, “Byproducts of Development” utilizes found materials, both digital and physical, to portray a theory of cultural transformation. The show aims to draw attention to the physiological repercussions of rapid urbanization; linking the effects of oil industry to noticeable changes in the body. Additionally, digital connectivity is scrutinized as a locus of change, prompting shifts in selfimage and methods of self-actualization that mirror the drastic changes in local landscapes. Male fragility is positioned as a reaction to, as well as a consequence of, rapid development, with youth caught between a changing ecology and digital influences. This is Abdullah Al-Mutairi’s first solo show. Check out Byproducts of Development at the Sultan Gallery from April 11th-April 27th, 2017. Sultan Gallery is located in South Sabhan, block 8, street 105, building 168. Opening hours are from 10 am to 4 pm, Sunday to Thursday. (Closed on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays). It shows the richness and the diversity that flourished despite the traumas and “schizophrenic” living conditions, as one artist put it. This exhibition aims to shine a light on this group and give it its rightful place within the regional Arab culture. Third Identity is an ongoing exhibition at Contemporary Art Platform until April 22nd. The exhibit will be shown daily from 10am7pm. Contemporary Art Platform is located in Life Center (same building as Eureka), Mezzanine floor, Industrial Shuwaikh, Block 2, Street 28. KUWAIT GOES GREEN WITH HASADD

Introducing BioHydro’s two-month campaign By bazaar staff

It's difficult to explore the wonders of gardening and sustainable food-growing while living in Kuwait's desert climate. From harsh weather conditions such as extreme heat and dust taking over our lives for at least 5 months out of the year, to a lack in community outdoor resources within a largely urbanized nation, we find it easy to just give up when it comes to planting our own produce and greenery. But with initiatives like BioHydro, Kuwait has been given a chance to prove how green it can really be! Established with the intent to highlight our innate attraction to the natural world, BioHydro is striving to reunite humanity and nature through sustainable technologies. They aim to refrain from pesticide and herbicide use while utilizing nature's already existing remedies, ultimately resulting in better food and a better environment for us and future generations. BioHydro and UN-Habitat took this to the next level by joining forces to bring awareness on the topic of sustainable growth to Kuwait, in the form of Hasadd. Created by founder and CEO of BioHydro, Eng. Hamad Al-Kulaib, Hasadd is a campaign conceived to elevate sustainable urban agricultural practices amongst Kuwait’s residents. Comprised of a moving exhibit, a series of lectures, and workshops in Al Shaheed Park, the campaign is set to continue over the next month, and has been perfectly timed in duration with a commemorative day very dear to us all: Earth Day. “Hasadd aims to engage local residents in conversations about sustainable practices, and shed light on Mother Earth's plea on her special day while raising knowledge about the country’s newly implemented environmental laws,” he says. Hasadd targets its campaign towards household families and local SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Entrepreneurs), teaching them sustainable methods of growing indoors and helping them successfully commercialize hydroponics within Kuwaiti market dynamics. Other audiences who can benefit are academia and environmental authorities, and persons with disabilities, making it an inclusive campaign for all to take part in. Split into two phases, the campaign focuses on awareness and capacity building among Kuwait’s youth, while emphasizing the technical application of hydroponics. Phase one consists of many lectures and opportunities for youth involvement, in addition to debates with international environmentalists. In such lectures, Hamad will subsequently raise questions regarding current notions of sustainability in Kuwait’s highly irradiated and arid climate, that will be followed 30

by a discussion session attended by decision makers in governmental scientific institutions and their respective NGO arms. Phase two’s more technical principles will implement an education towards the use of hydroponic growth, with workshops mainly circulating around Hasadd’s elements of 'You Plant, You Grow, You Protect and You Enjoy.' The workshops aim to simplify sustainable growing methods for members of society, especially those with special needs. Participants will be equipped with 6 months’ worth of growing tools to empower them to become proud contributors of the sustainable community. They will also share stories of successes, failures and the joys of growth throughout 22-day home harvesting experience with BioHydroprovided systems sponsored by the Ministry of State for Youth Affairs. The highlight of the campaign will be a celebration of Mother Nature on Earth Day (April 23rd) with programs designed to boost Kuwait’s contribution towards nature conservations on a global scale. The exciting list of events will include: Seed Swap In coordination with the EPA and the Ministry of Interior – Environmental Police, the seed swap will highlight the importance of surrounding native flora trade and CITES’ endangered species. The rules of the swap will ensure collectors know the purpose of the law and its do’s and don’ts.

Hear Nature With the coordination and approval of Conversation International, Arabic-subtitled “Nature is Speaking” films will be shown in different zones thought Al Shaheed Park on Earth Day, and spectators will sign pledges on the 'I Heard Nature' signboard. #AfterTheLastTree This exhibit will showcase the stark future vision of a world without trees, intending to move spectators into introspection and action on climate change and its fast approaching, irreversible effects on the world as we know it. If the above isn’t reason enough for you to involve yourselves in this awareness campaign, then we don’t know what is. All we know is that Mother Earth is crying, and we haven’t given up yet. Support Hasadd and BioHydro for this wonderful gift they’re giving us: the gift of sustainable, green knowledge. “Our responsibility towards future generations dictates the vision of our human advancement and observation of Mother Earth’s 4-billion-year track record of sustainable living, ensuring that our inherited state of living of what is better rather than worse,” Hamad concluded. Hasadd has been taking place at Al Shaheed Park since March 18th, and will continue its campaign till April 23rd. Follow BioHydro on Instagram: @biohydrokw to stay updated on Hasadd’s lectures, workshops and exhibits.

SARAH CHOUARI

Infusing art into everyday life By bazaar staff

Born and raised in Kuwait, Sarah Chouari’s passion for art was ignited ever since she was just a child in school. “I went on to university to study Fine Arts,” Sarah elaborated, “and found myself having to minor in Graphic Design to have a ‘usable degree’ because of societal pressures. And bazaar was my first design job straight out of university!” We sat down with Sarah to firstly catch up, and to learn more about her journey and why she opened up the beloved ArtSpace – “because I truly believe there’s an artist in everyone!” After her time with bazaar, Sarah moved on to an advertising agency for a while before calling it quits and leaving Kuwait. “I couldn’t find myself in graphic design, it just wasn’t me.” Newly unemployed, Sarah decided to study cake decorating as an expansion to her art studies and went on to open Sarah’s Bakery in Dubai. “Cake decorating is an art form,” Sarah smiled, “So I started to put my art on the cakes I was baking!” After that, she headed to the United States for a couple of years before relocating back to Kuwait. Wanting to do what she loved and and make it accessible to Kuwait, Sarah teamed up with her friends and fellow art appreciators Raghda Youssef and Soos Farasheh to bring us ArtSpace. “I couldn’t have done any of this without my team, I truly am blessed.” Giving the people here the opportunity to learn the basics of art, Sarah and her team crave to simply provide the people with the basics to express themselves in any way they can. Understanding that it’s not for everyone, she continues to urge people to “just try it!” Since its inception, ArtSpace has expanded beyond offering basic painting classes. Today, the artsy haven provides a plethora of classes in other mediums: Art journaling, dance classes, drawing, pottery, music classes, and even cooking! “Everyone needs a form of art in their lives to help them cope with every day stresses,” Sarah went on. “Art isn’t just about painting, it’s about everything around us – that’s why it’s called ArtSpace, because we’re a space that provides you with the tools to create art in all its forms.”

BEING HUMAN

Where did we go wrong?

By Umjay M

I can't help but be reminded of Louis CK's skit about polar bears. He argues, "If you believe God gave you this earth, why would you not think you have to look after it?" Referencing our heavy dependence on oil and the irreversible pollution it has created he goes on to ask, "who spilled this? What is that?" The human responds, "it's oil. It's just some oil. I didn't mean to spill it." "But why'd you take it out of the ground?". "Because I wanted to go faster. I'm not fast enough." Humans are greedy by nature. We want more, we want better, we want faster. While in theory, the want of more and better is not rooted in evil, it's the want of more for the sake of more that seems to have gotten us where we are today. "Harmony in the City," curated by Jasmine Singh and Jassim Al-Nashmi, was exhibited at Masaha 13 during the month of February as a platform which hoped to initiate dialogue on these issues at the global and personal level. The proof is all around us; from environmentally taxing food systems, congested road systems, climate change, the slow withering away of this planet's resources, you can't walk two steps without coming face-to-face with the reality of what we've done to this earth. While these issues have been deeply explored by many from a wide range of disciplines, "Harmony in the City" addresses you, the inquisitive and empathetic individual at the grassroots level, presenting the synthesis of emerging ideas in search of a post-oil metropolis. These experimental art works, which ranged across performative art, dye-sublimation printing on aluminum and mixed media digital drawing, hoped to raise awareness of where we are today, while exploring possibilities for the future. One of the many consequences of our hyperindustrialized world is human isolation. Seldom do we now find the need to interact with another human, and because of it, we've almost forgotten how to be human. Participating artist Houssam I. Flayhan, a Lebanese Architect who resides and works in Kuwait asks, "can empathy be a tool for change?" With his social media initiative @ ekwti, he hopes to prove that empathy is, in fact, the instrument for social change. He compares @ekwti to a virus, which has an incredibly sophisticated mechanism of infecting hosts, integrating its information, thus rapidly spreading through ecosystems. He says, "@ekwti mimics a virus by spreading empathetic knowledge onto followers on social media. This manifestation was propagated on Instagram to encourage and help 34

modify a vision of reality, while developing habits of empathy towards environmental and social issues… in Kuwait." Followers of the account are informed about local issues and encouraged to take an active part in both understanding the problem and the means by which they might resolve it. There was a time when you could only eat oranges in winter, strawberries in spring and watermelons in summer. If you think about it, fruit and vegetable seasons were (are) not arbitrary. The cold temperatures of winter take a toll on the immune system, and oranges are nature's way of replenishing our bodies with vitamin C. In the summer, as the body sweats to keep us cool, it also runs the risk of dehydration – enter the incredibly juicy watermelon. And strawberries, well, strawberries are just delicious. But, when was the last time you took a bite out of a strawberry and not mistaken it for a crunchy Granny Smith apple with a hint of strawberry flavor? 'The Strawberry Project,' a comparative analysis of two strawberries consumed in Kuwait, is a digital print work by artists Houssam I. Flayhan, Jasmine Singh and Jassim Al-Nashmi. Through the mapping of the two strawberry routes; one from the industrial berry corporation 'Driscolls' in the USA, and the other from 'Yasmin

Farm' a small local farm in Kuwait, the artists were able to analyze, compare and display the environmental, economic and social equities of the two strawberries. Exploring their journey through the five stages of the food system – production, processing, distribution, access and waste management, 'The Strawberry Project' exposed several externalized environmental and social costs that, to the consumer (you and I), seem invisible. In the words of Richard Manning, "every single calorie we eat is backed by at least a calorie of oil, more like ten." So, at the risk of sounding cliché, be the change you want to see in the world. The next time you go out, if you pass someone on the street, smile. It's simple, it's free and it's the nice thing to do. If you get the glare of disgust, smile anyway, there is always that one person who'll get it, and that is where change begins.

A STORYTELLER

OF A DIFFERENT KIND ABRAR ALEBRAHIM ON TH’HABA, DESIGN, AND

CULTURAL EXPLORATIONS By bazaar staff

I’ve been quite fascinated by Th’haba, the locally conceived hand-crafted jewelry concept, and its constant state of evolution for quite some time now. Which is why when the opportunity presented itself to interview the brand’s founder Abrar Alebrahim, I swiftly found myself wandering along the pretty lanes of Shuwaikh’s Mayar Center to reach my destination at the designer’s latest space, Kittab Th’haba. Don’t expect to find yourself at yet another boutique, as Abrar considers Kittab Th’haba her home away from home. Clad in pristine, dusty white marble walls and floors, the space is beautifully flooded with light. As soon as I walked through the door, I noticed the bustling staff moving the furniture around, and setting up bespoke canvases by renowned artist, architect and designer Fareed Abdal. Noticing my perplexed complexion, Abrar warmly ushered me through and welcomed me with this explanation, “The purpose of this space is threefold, to learn, experience and socialize, and the shift changes depending on the planned activity or collaboration taking place here. I love that we worked with Fareed to present his latest jewelry collection showcasing his calligraphy. The space is now his canvas to realize his vision. Just before any event, the space is completely redesigned—I remove all the jewelry to showcase a totally new idea, launch or initiative.” Mere moments later, we shifted gears ourselves, and headed upstairs to her workspace to talk about the idea that started it all: Th’haba. For Abrar, the learning experience is what makes her journey with Th’haba special. Picking up a special sieve used to separate 36

diamonds by size, a self-taught technique on the designer’s part, I admired her sharpness and utter precision that is clearly reflected in her work and designs since its inception in 2011. Ephemeral earrings are designed to fall in a certain way to emit a subjective feeling, and a diamond tennis bracelet is atypical, cleverly envisioned to sit on the wrist in a specific, delicate manner that can’t be found when looking at the designs of many high-end jewelry brands. From inspirations that vary from poetry to travel, and calligraphy, it is clear that with Th’haba, each piece is personal, and telling of one of Abrar’s remarkable stories and experiences. The designer credits her discerning eye to her passionate relationship with architecture. She said, “I consider architecture to be an equally creative field, and practicing it enhances my experience with Th’haba on an on-going basis. Architecture teaches you how to design, and that’s a scalable skill. There was a collection that I am planning on bringing back that was influenced by Old-Kuwaiti architecture.” If anything, Abrar’s journey with Th’haba is an earned craft, constantly practiced and perfected. “The entire journey with Th’haba continues based on me meeting people, learning and growing with Th’haba,” Abrar remarked with fascination, “I teach architecture at the university on a part time basis, and I consider teaching and interacting with people as a huge part of who I am as a person. I always taught those younger than me through my work as well as giving workshops. Teaching is something I deeply appreciate.” With Kittab Th’haba, Abrar looks forward to meeting both clients and potential Th’haba fans, to speak with them about all the hard work it takes to actually produce a given collection. She explained that, “While locals are quite used to buying traditional jewelry, we’re establishing ourselves as designers. To me, that’s reflective of so many things, from effort, inspiration to design.” In this sense, the journey with Th’haba is also educational, where Abrar takes the time to speak to her clients about her pieces, and this part of her vision is now realized at Kittab Th’haba. Simply looking around the space shows a marked reflection of how Kittab Th’haba is quite multifaceted, like the designer’s personality. For Abrar, the space not only solidifies Th’haba as a design concept, but it also arrives as a cultural platform. She smilingly arranges a collection of Indian jewelry that remained after her first event at the space. Dubbing each event as an ‘episode’, Abrar’s first foray with Episode 1: Incredible India was a collaboration with Mohamed Al Sanea’ of travel platform 961. Mohamed picked a bold and inspired collection from India, and a part of this collection now has a permanent home at Kittab Th’haba. When

I asked her why India, her eyes lit up at the opportunity to speak on another great passion of hers—travel. “Traveling is when I am mostly me, that is when I am out of my context. I try to make it happen as often as I can. It’s very inspirational, and it’s actually how I got the idea for Th’haba!” It was one trip to New York, seven Christmases ago that led Abrar to the Union Square fair where she saw many small jewelry designers showcasing their work. It was then and there that she approached them, and told them that she would have a shop one day where she wanted to sell their pieces. She excitedly recounted, “That trip resonated with me, and suddenly I started my own businesses. I visited the same spot a year and a half later, and told them that I still want to sell their designs!” Beyond the experiences that come with travel, Abrar believes that her own designs, and jewelry buying habits, have changed. Nowadays, Abrar seeks to explore the jewelry culture of each and every place that she visits, and further explained, “I research this aspect of the culture, find people that make it, and bring back a collection to Kuwait. This feeds my thirst for knowledge. For instance, consider Oman. The nation’s jewelry style varies from region to another, and in working with various materials there I am constantly inspired.” To Abrar, her art of jewelry making and design is always a personal endeavor, and travel nurtures her desire to learn and create. But has this designer ever needed to change direction? “Not yet!” she laughingly replied, “I always know how it’s going to look like. I have something in my mind that I need

to realize immediately. It comes to me as soon as I consider how a stone can be placed, for instance. I never randomly sketch—maybe that’s why this is a bit different to architecture. Where architecture work is based on preexisting notions, with Th’haba, I have these designs in my mind—and I need to make them happen.” With five collections currently in the works, Abrar does everything on her own while still teaching architecture – she makes it look all too easy, “I’ve got way more to go, but I always find myself out of time!” she said, “I’m pretty hands-on when it comes to my work from design to production.” No piece is produced without her sharp supervision. I asked the designer if that takes away from her desire to collaborate, a notion she entirely rejected, “Collaborations are beautiful. You learn about yourself, you learn about the other person, and it broadens your horizons and opens a new market for you.” Previously collaborating with local artist Abdullah Al Awadhi, Abrar looks forward to working with him again. As far as dream collaborations go, she would love to work with Brazilian designer Fernando Jorge, “Not only is he a soulful human being, his designs are amazing! I would definitely learn so much from him!” Before I departed from the amazing space that is Kittab Th’haba, I leave Abrar to prepare for yet another work trip. This time, Abrar plans on dedicating her time strictly for Th’haba. “I’m going to India to meditate and work, there are so many ideas in my head that I need to get out!” And I cannot wait to see what these ideas materialize into as I plot my next visit to this gorgeous space. TWO WRITERS AND A NUQAT WORKSHOP Perfecting our craft with Studio Nuqat

By bazaar staff

What happens when you send two bazaar writers to a writing workshop? Well, first of all, you can expect them to be a little offended (what are you trying to say, bosses?). Second of all, seeing that the subject matter of said workshop is entitled “Creative Writing: Social Media Workshop,” one particular bazaarite who usually handles social media text each month felt a little perplexed as to why she was requested to attend this workshop. When we walked into the studio, we didn’t quite know what to expect. We were greeted by two extremely experienced and respected writers in the industry: Liane Al Ghusain, whose seven years of professional experience boast skills in creative writing, and Wakim Zeidan who boasts an impressive 19 years working in advertising and copywriting, and is one of the original founders of the Nuqat initiative. With each instructor’s respective resume alone, we knew we were in good hands. Our first activity was to think of a specific audience member we would be trying to reach in our social media writing, and define them by age, geographic location, language, good and bad habits, taste in clothes, food, music and books, catchphrases, preferred weekend activities and frequently used emojis. I chose my sister, who is in her early 30s, because that’s the person I spend the most time with. To my surprise, the other three ladies sitting at my table chose similar candidates, so we knew that we had a common market to work with. Keeping our audience members in mind, we then moved on to a discussion led by Liane and Wakim who walked us through the different styles of reaching people via social media. Are we more prone to approach people with news and information? Or perhaps we’re into statistics, tips and research. I realized that my personal style is humor, rhetorical and community questions and shout-outs, being sure to ask my audience members a funny question while shouting out X person, entity or company who directed me toward the product in the first place. We then used that information to engage in our first group activity, where we were to choose one of the six products placed on our table to market onto the workshop’s private Instagram account: a set of prayer beads, a pregnancy test, a little box of press-on nails, a roll of toilet paper, PostIts, and a playful bunch of lollipops by Sugar Bee. I chose the prayer beads, instantly thinking of a 40

great way to market them, and captioned my photo “When are you going to stop praying for your life to fall into place?” followed by details of a fictional women’s empowerment seminar to take place within the next couple of days. Once everyone’s shots were posted, we took to the large projector set up at the front of the classroom to “like” and critique each person’s respective post. It was so interesting to see all these different approaches by different professionals in various fields. Especially how each person chose to target their audience in a creative, whimsical or informative fashion. My personal favorite example was one that certainly caught my attention: a boomerang clip of presson nail adorned hands with a caption reading (To the tune of Drake’s “Hotline Bling”) “You used to call me at the #salon, late night when you want to see my #fringed Iris 3D #art #nails,” with relevant hashtags following the statement. Definitely got a like from me! I also learned that hashtags, tone and location are super important components to consider when reaching an audience. I always tend to forget about the location bit, but did you know that it’s probably the most vital? When selecting the location, don’t base it on where you currently are situated while posting, but where you want your followers to go to,

or where you want to reach them. Lesson learned, and well played, Liane and Wakim! We concluded the workshop with a fun opportunity to brand ourselves for the rest of our classmates to see. The assignment was to take a selfie, caption it how we saw fit to make us stand out, and make sure to mention something that we want to be known for, or something we want to make known. Since I am personally the worst at taking selfies, I opted for the main characteristic people know me for: my tattoo of Palestine’s outline etched onto my inner forearm. I then captioned it with a simple yet effective self-made slogan to let them know all the most important aspects of this bazaarite’s being: individuality, uniqueness, the freedom to express with my voice as a writer, and the great entity I work for that has given me the opportunity to release that voice. It works, and most importantly, I liked it (And others did, too)! Sign up for a Studio Nuqat workshop to enhance your creative capabilities! TIME OUT WITH TAYMOUR KHAJAH

By Nejoud Al-Yagout

Taymour Khajah is definitely not an individual on auto-pilot. He is an awakened soul who is doing his best to raise the frequency of his birthplace, Kuwait. In his own words, he is "now motivated more than ever to grab hold of the wheel and change the country for good." He adds that Kuwait "is ours. We are the youth. We HAVE control..." And Taymour is "more excited than ever to be part of the growth and positive change." In short, his mission is to bring the heart back into art through music, through culture, through love. It seems as though your guitar is an appendage. How close are the two of you? Well, my guitar has transcended itself to become an extension of my limbs. I have been lost in the universe of the six-string instrument for more than nine years now; and I am still discovering sounds, techniques and combinations to an endless degree. It makes me wonder about the infinite dimensions that each and every instrument on this planet carries. I guess I should change my Facebook relationship status to: Serious… with my guitar. Taymour, you participated in two vigils. At the second one, Co-exist Vigil, words were barely exchanged. It was all about music. How does your music reflect co-existence? It’s only this year that I realize English, Arabic, and Persian are not among my most fluent languages, but music is. I find myself most comfortable using the vocabulary of pitches – which, in turn, reflects the way I am best at communicating and co-existing. With languages I connect at a micro scale, but with the sounds and combinations of notes that I am able to play, I believe they are a stronger way of grasping others where it really affects. If your guitar could speak, what would it tell us? Play me better than yesterday. You seem busy all the time, performing all over town. Obviously this is because you are in high demand. Do you ever want to take a break or is music such an intrinsic part of you that it won't let you be? I believe I currently feel like I need nothing else than to fill all my slots with everything musicrelated. My days are filled with meeting other musicians, learning from one another, writing, presenting (performing), recording at home and practicing. When I am not doing any of those things, I feel a bit restless and uncomfortable watching time pass by. I guess it’s the potential of what you dedicate your time to that keeps one so enticed. 42

And, lastly, do you ever wake up in the middle of the night with a tune ringing in your head, disturbing your sleep until you just have to write it down or strum your guitar? Or do you find songs in stillness? Or both, for that matter? A bit of both. I usually tend to enjoy my sleep as the dreamland is a wonderful place in which to dwell. But I have definitely had moments where I have a new tune in my head, and I just had

to get out of bed to save it or work on it. The best material comes out at the most unexpected times. It has magical - yet ironic - feel to it. You can follow Taymour Khajah on his Instagram account @timmycatdog or subscribe to his YouTube channel: Taymour77. BUILDING HOPE THROUGH KNOWLEDGE Educate a Student with edSeed

By Lina Samad

How many children are refugees? According to 2016 UN Refugee Agency report, there are over 50 million children who are refugees or immigrants all over the world! To make matters worse, these children make up more than 50% of refugees globally. When children are refugees, their right to education becomes unfulfilled; refugee children are five times more likely to be out of school than the global average. “The gap widens as these children become older”, states the UNHCR (UN Refugee Agency). “At the higher education level, fewer than one per cent of refugees attend university, compared to 34 per cent at global level.” Providing continuous education for people under 24, in the refugee community, is a big priority. Unfortunately, there usually isn’t enough support to accomplish this goal. However, this is changing with MIT’s Solve Co-Lab challenge, which aims to solve “the world’s most pressing challenges through open innovation and partnership.” The Refugee Challenge calls out innovators to create a solution to this crisis. BarakaBits snatched a chance to talk to the founders of edSeed, which is one of the proposed solution projects for the Refugee Challenge. What is edSeed? It’s an application that attempts to build a global community of donors. The donations will directly pay student tuition and endorse the students in need. Here’s what they had to say: Who are you? We are a global team made up of developers, marketers, a team for on-board universities. We train students, students who are testing the app, and supporters among the education and startup communities. We welcome collaborators who want to see this grow as a community and movement to fund education for others, as a means to achieve peace and prosperity for all Which geographic locations will edSeed support? We are starting with outreach programs among students in Palestine, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan, and donors who care for these regions. We will expand as we get more support to develop features and onboarding programs elsewhere. Our aim is to go global and offer crowdfunded education for all those who need it, as educated youth are an asset for the entire world. Why invest in edSeed? We believe education is the most powerful 44

weapon we can use to change the world. It is a basic human right and the only way to economic prosperity and self-reliance. Unfortunately, only 1% of refugees attend university, because of lack of funding. We want to change that by offering a platform that anyone who believes in education and cares about refugees can go to donate as little as $10 or as much as $100,000. What makes edSeed stand out for other platforms? edSeed has simplified the crowdfunding campaign creation process. All we request is for students to answer a set of questions, and then we connect with the desired University for training and on-boarding between both University admins and students. We are building a community comprised of students, universities, donors, and education advocates. The stronger this community is, the more we will be able to support education through funding, mentoring, policy lobbying and more. Who do you aspire to be like? We hope to be the Kiva of education.

What if you want to support but you cannot donate? You can endorse students! View profiles and select the ones that speak to you. Then, share your endorsement on your social networks. Someone you know maybe compelled to sign up to edSeed and pay for the student’s education. Is edSeed sustainable? We plan to be. We are reaching out to donor organizations who want help reach wider audiences and receive funding in our early stages. We plan on making a small percentage on transaction fees that can help us scale our offering and become sustainable within 3 years. This initiative is quite creative in it’s approach to crowdfund via social media. Help us fill the age- education gap for refugees and go vote for edSeed! Help refugees smile with their diplomas.

For more information about the initiative, please visit www.f6s.com/edseed.

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY

Meeting the two quirky cousins behind Sac

By bazaar staff

Sara and Lamia Al Nafisi

Is there anything better than finding the perfect unique piece to make your wardrobe come alive? When it comes to practical accessorizing, you want something easy that will complement everything but will still add flair and originality, paying homage to the personality you illuminate with your personal style choices. But handbags, bags, totes and such come in all different shapes, sizes and functions. Cousins Sara and Lamia Al Nafisi are particularly fond of clutches, so much that their love of the staple led them to starting up their own business centered around the fashionable accessory, but with a twist. We must ask the dream team, however – “why clutches?” what makes clutches different than larger purses and bags? “We find that clutches are modern, and they’re just so much easier than the standard big bag,” co-founder Sara states.

46

“They’re just lighter, handier, and multifunctional, and we both prefer their general use and aesthetic over handbags!” And with a closeness and bond that brought the cousins together on an entrepreneurial level, Sac was born. Their journey began right before Ramadan 2016, and launched towards the end of the year – “November 14th, to be exact,” Lamia smiles. Both Lamia and Sara speak highly of their product, and as they show us pieces of their wellcurated stock, we can see the pride they have for these handcrafted beauties and why clutches was a perfect choice for them to invest their time and creativity in. The clutches are completely Kuwaiti-made, with no international sourcing. Each fabric used and the embroiderer himself are situated within Kuwait, and the girls often find themselves journeying around the country to collect whatever is necessary to make their pieces come alive. Though neither one of them fancies themselves a designer, (Sara works in finance, and Lamia specializes in PR), all designs are created by

them, thus transferring them from thought, to paper, to fabric in a flow that transforms ideas into works of wearable art. The great thing about Sac’s clutches is that they are truly original, and made with lots of consideration. Not only are they entirely different from anything else on the market, they cater to a larger demographic consumer base around Kuwait. "Sac prides itself on being affordable, and we have a customer base starting at 12 to women my grandmother’s age!” Sara says as she holds up one of their pieces: a gray vegan leather clutch with textured geometrical embroideries adorning the front. “And its affordability comes with the local fabrics and materials we use. This is why we use vegan leather as opposed to sourcing natural leather, because we want to keep our brand affordable to all— and we don’t have the heart to add embroidery to leather!” Sara quips. “We also love how versatile our clutches are and that each one offers something special,” Lamia adds as she gently tugs open the top-zip closure, revealing a smooth lining that adds a pop

of color to the clutch’s aesthetic. “Each model has a different color lining, which makes each clutch a true original.” The designs of each are based on the two stylish co-founders’ agreeable tastes that tend to complement one another perfectly. Sara, in a bohemian-inspired red casual floral frock presented an earthy-chicness that is emulated on a best-selling, sold out piece we fell in love with: a dark velvet pouch with an embroidered cherry blossom stitching throughout, ideal for the winter, fall and early spring months. Lamia’s edgy chic structured scuba skirt paired with a textured cream sweater seemed to be an indirect nod to the geometric embroideries stitched on the gray, black and navy clutches, and yet what’s funny is that they don’t plan to do this. “Actually,” Sara begins, “the velvet Cherry Blossom clutch was Lamia’s baby. She loves cherry blossoms and she really wanted to put it on velvet, so I let her take over that specific project.” And Sara’s current favorite? “I’m really excited about the new navy clutch we have” referring to the vegan leather

clutch with gold-tone, geometric embroidery, perched delicately in her hand. Sac’s classic designs are agreeable year-round, and stem from influences that that reap cousin’s relatable passions: nature, modernity, clean-cut lines, minimalism, tradition and style. But what we found especially attractive was the obvious Islamic-geometric influences throughout some of their pieces. “[The Islamic influence] was not done on purpose!” Sara laughs, good-naturedly. “I think that this style is just engrained in us. We’re from here, we grew up here, so of course our tastes are going to subconsciously sway towards our culture!” Imagine pairing those influences with their upcoming Ramadan collection, a season for style that makes us all feel giddy with joy as we get to bask in oldArabic styles such as dara’as and tatreez everything – if the anticipation alone isn’t exciting, we don’t know what is! For now, Sac is focusing on their love of the clutch. “It’s been doing really well so far, and while we’re our own biggest fans and our family members are huge supporters, we were

so pleasantly surprised to see that our largest customer base comes from people who we don’t even know.” This is always a good sign, and with sophisticated, relatable and stylish nononsense pieces, we know that they will only flourish. But what’s next for the two? “I’d like for us to start getting our fabrics abroad, eventually – maybe India or Turkey where they specialize in embroideries as well,” the quieter Lamia says with a twinkle in her eye. “We also have a bunch of ideas to add to our collection! Hint: they’re going to stay within the bag family, so stay tuned to find out!”

CASH YOU INSIDE!

Seriously, don’t leave your room just yet By George Tarabay

“Knock, knock” “Who’s there?” “Eyegota” “Eyegota who?” “Eyegota cable and a laptop. Now I’m a DJ” [Slams the door in their face.] Yep, welcome to the latest, and not so recent, trend in Kuwait. People choosing a moniker and buying a cable and then bombarding you with their fresh, oh-honeybelieve-me-they’re-not DJ skills. I am all for following your heart, but please keep it to yourself. If my unborn, never to be born, child chooses to start playing the violin, believe you me, he will be on the street faster than he can start swinging his arch! What do I mean? If you want to be a DJ, then please, by all means, start learning, but don’t call yourself that before you really master the craft. That would be offensive, not only to people who mastered the craft, but also to the ears of humans and dogs living three blocks away. I've witnessed many people start from scratch and work day and night to achieve what they deem artistic, and then go out in public and perform to showcase their talents and services. Guess what? they all nailed it! I know music is to be enjoyed, but the guy or lady playing it (3 feminist points for Georgie boy for being such a sport) has got to know what and how to mix. Otherwise: “Wanna go somewhere quiet?” This rule does not only apply to DJs, but it also applies to musicians alike, and I think it is about fair time we plug some serious local talent, please look them up and listen to their work. Here I go (I know there are way more people than those I am listing, but please forgive me, as I am only human and humans are forgetful creatures): Musicians/Song Writers/Singers/Bands: Omar Afuni, Carol Souki, Amin Fari, The Hashtags, Fabrice, Zak Musawi, The Afterthought Band, Daffy, Army of One, Qattana, Tarek Kabbani, Ahmed Ashab… DJs/Producers: iCandi, Kade B, Majed Zane, Viper, Shadow, Jacks, Bruce, X … Look them up, I’ll wait. These young men and women worked day and night, then day after day after day to master their craft. Once you hear their work, whether you like it or not, you cannot take away from their skill, talent and hard work. They breath what they do, and it can be heard clearly in whatever they bring forth. Now, why on earth would you go around with a cable or an off-tune guitar claiming that you’re a DJ or a singer? Hein? The self-proclaimed fresh DJs or musicians nowadays, are not only hurting the ears of those past their tight circle (because let’s face it, these 48

are their only fans), but they’re also hurting the real artists who are trying to break through and land paid gigs. It is already hard for artists and DJs to get paid, especially when most business owners or event planners believe that “exposure” is a very valuable currency that translates into more gigs, which most probably, also pay in “exposure”. These artists or DJs missed several outings with their friends and their families because they couldn’t leave before mastering that solo, or finding the ending to that verse or landing the perfect thirty minutes mix list. They paid for their art emotionally, physically, mentally, personally, financially and the real hard currency, their time. By providing a lower, more horrible version of what they do, you are lowering their industry’s standard. That’s why, I have to revisit my initial statement: If you want to be a DJ or singer/songwriter or even a cover performer, please do. All the artists/DJs I mentioned started in silence and determination. Now, and even though most of them are reluctant to call themselves artists because they are modest, we bestow on them these names because we see

their effort and talent in every second of what they do and we enjoy it. Start low-key, practice, optimize and then let people call you DJ or singer or… The equation is not "cable + new instrument = artist." The equation is "dude, she/he got some real skills + talent! = artist." Now go practice before I whip you with that cable! With love; not hate, George.

BEES, PLEASE!

As bee populations dwindle, robot bees may pick up some of their pollination slack By Amina Khan

One day, gardeners might not just hear the buzz of bees among their flowers, but the whirr of robots, too. Scientists in Japan say they’ve managed to turn an unassuming drone into a remote-controlled pollinator by attaching horsehairs coated with a special, sticky gel to its underbelly. The system, described in the journal Chem, is nowhere near ready to be sent to agricultural fields, but it could help pave the way to developing automated pollination techniques at a time when bee colonies are suffering precipitous declines. Flowers looking to get the pollen from their male parts into another bloom’s female parts need an envoy to carry it from one to the other. Those third players are animals known as pollinators — a diverse group of critters that includes bees, butterflies, birds and bats, among others. Animal pollinators are needed for the reproduction of 90 percent of flowering plants and one-third of human food crops, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service. Chief among those are bees — but many bee populations in the United States have been in steep decline in recent decades, likely due to a combination of factors, including agricultural chemicals, invasive species and climate change. Thus, the decline of bees isn’t just worrisome because it could disrupt ecosystems, but also because it could disrupt agriculture and the economy. People have been trying to come up with replacement techniques, the study authors say, but none of them are especially effective yet — and some might do more harm than good. “One pollination technique requires the physical transfer of pollen with an artist’s brush or cotton swab from male to female flowers,” the authors wrote. “Unfortunately, this requires much time and effort. Another approach uses a spray machine, such as a gun barrel and pneumatic ejector. However, this machine pollination has a low pollination success rate because it is likely to cause severe denaturing of pollens and flower pistils as a result of strong mechanical contact as the pollens bursts out of the machine.” Scientists have thought about using drones, but they haven’t figured out how to make free-flying robot insects that can rely on their own power source without being attached to a wire. “It’s very tough work,” said senior author Eijiro Miyako, a chemist at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Japan. 50

Miyako’s particular contribution to the field involves a gel, one he’d considered a mistake 10 years before. The scientist had been attempting to make fluids that could be used to conduct electricity, and one attempt left him with a gel that was as sticky as hair wax. Clearly this wouldn’t do, and so Miyako stuck it in a storage cabinet in an uncapped bottle. When it was rediscovered a decade later, it looked exactly the same — the gel hadn’t dried up or degraded at all. “I was so surprised, because it still had a very high viscosity,” Miyako said. The chemist noticed that when dropped, the gel absorbed an impressive amount of dust from the floor. Miyako realized this material could be very useful for picking up pollen grains. He took ants, slathered the ionic gel on some of them and let both the gelled and un-gelled insects wander through a box of tulips. Those ants with the gel were far more likely to end up with a dusting of pollen than those that were free of the sticky substance. The next step was to see if this worked with mechanical movers, as well. He and his colleagues chose a four-propeller drone whose retail value was $100, and attached horsehairs to its smooth

surface to mimic a bee’s fuzzy body. They coated those horsehairs in the gel, and then maneuvered the drones over Japanese lilies, where they would pick up the pollen from one flower and then deposit the pollen at another bloom, thus fertilizing it. The scientists looked at the hairs under a scanning electron microscope and counted up the pollen grains attached to the surface. They found that the robots whose horsehairs had been coated with the gel had on the order of 10 times more pollen than those hairs that had not been coated with the gel. “A certain amount of practice with remote control of the artificial pollinator is necessary,” the study authors noted. Miyako does not think such drones would replace bees altogether, but could simply help bees with their pollinating duties. “In combination is the best way,” he said. There’s a lot of work to be done before that’s a reality, however. Small drones will need to become more maneuverable and energy efficient, as well as smarter, he said — with better GPS and artificial intelligence, programmed to travel in highly effective search-and-pollinate patterns.

STOP CRYING TREATS

Not naughty, but nutritious! By bazaar staff

Natalie Van Rooyen

The weather is definitely getting hotter now and we at bazaar are desperately working out to get beach ready for the summer. Always on the go, we were very happy to learn that there is now a homemade, healthy alternative to snacking which gives us the protein energy we crave. Knowledge literally is power in this case! With over a decade’s experience in food and nutrition, trained chef Natalie Van Rooyen has partnered with local personal trainer Jon P to bring gym rats and busy people on the move Stop Crying Treats. Using the best organic ingredients, these all natural, raw bars and bites are vegan, gluten and sugar free. They come with the nutritional values clearly labeled on the packaging for your peace of mind. Natalie started training with Jon P at the Stop Crying Studios a year ago. They often found themselves discussing clean eating and how most of the products on the market didn’t fit the highest standards of ingredients that they demand of their 52

food. With a goal set in mind, Natalie’s work began on numerous recipes; trial and error finally producing four very distinct bars all with a granola base. To satisfy that insatiable sweet tooth you can go for the Peanut Butter Choc Chip Protein Bar where the chocolate is organic with 80 percent cacao. For the fruit fans among you there is the Cranberry Cinnamon Granola Bar. Need a quick boost, the Cranberry and Vanilla Energy Bar is a great choice. You definitely want to try the Goji PB Granola Bar which always ends up being the top pick once sampled. It makes sense, because this particular product has added plantbased protein as well as tastes so satisfying! “People have given me some great comments about the bars and I’ve seen customers come back to the market stall each month specially to grab their favorite before it sells out. I’m having to refill the space at the gym quicker than ever before! I’ve recently returned from sourcing some of the key ingredients from specialty stores in New York so I’m looking forward to continuing to create the ideal bars that I enjoy using too.” As Stop Crying Treats products are raw, they can

last superbly for over two weeks in the fridge. “Most of our customers take all four flavors, doubling up on their favorite. This means they can confidently plan their snacking, power packing and recovery bars throughout the week, and they know they’ll still taste great,” Natalie explains. A staple presence at the seasonal Shakshooka market, don’t think that you’ll miss out on these treats as the market season comes to an end, because Stop Crying Treats hopes to provide a delivery service super soon! Make sure to follow these developments and additional products (pure fruit roll-ups anyone?) on their active Instagram account. Follow Instagram @stop.cryingtreats to place your order. WINDSWEPT

WITH PORSCHE THE ALL-NEW PORSCHE 718 BOXSTER By bazaar staff

54

From city to rolling dunes, we absolutely love a car that would take us from one backdrop to the next with ease. And when we had the chance to take the all-new Porsche 718 Boxster out for a spin, there was no stopping us. With the wind in our hair, and the music blaring from the speakers, we hit the open road and made our way from the Al-Bida’a’s glistening beach-front to the scenic desert of the Mutla’a Ridge along the 7th Ring Road. If we had to pick just one word for how the car drives, that word would be, without a doubt, flawlessly.

When the Boxster first made its debut twenty years ago, it was the sports car to look out for. Keeping that same ethos and feel, the new generation models – now known as the 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S – are now more powerful and more fuel efficient. With that, Porsche are continuing the tradition of fourcylinder flat engines in its 718 mid-engine sports cars. Now, with all the technological advances and upgrades to the engine, the 718 Boxster is smoother than ever. The completely new chassis tuning and stronger brakes provide for passionate and sporty driving pleasure. Our Lava Orange 718 Boxster glistened gloriously against the sparkling blue of the sea at Bida’a. And don’t even get us started on how it looked alongside the rolling highway and the sand dunes at the end. Getting to ride the 718 Boxster from dawn till dusk and watching

the color transform under the different lighting conditions and backdrops was astounding. The design of the new model line has also been comprehensively advanced – apart from the luggage compartment lids, windscreen and soft top, everything else is new. Inside, a newly designed instrument panel redefines the cockpit. In addition, the latest generation of Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with a stateof-the-art touchscreen is included as standard. The navigation module is available as an option. In the 718 Boxster, Porsche introduces two completely new four-cylinder flat engines with turbocharging. Their power and efficiency have been increased significantly compared to the previous engines. A bundle of innovations also ensures typical Porsche driving pleasure. Another innovation is indirect intercooling. To avoid having to change the design and

aerodynamics of the 718 Boxster, the turbo engines use the lateral air intakes behind the doors to obtain their process air and now for indirect intercooling as well. The temperature is reduced by an auxiliary loop of the cooling system. This involves the use of a heat exchanger above the engine. In this heat exchanger, the compressed air from the turbocharger gives off some of its heat to the circulating coolant. The liquid then flows through one radiator per air intake. The newly developed exhaust system guarantees the passionate sound experience that is typical of Porsche. In the 718 Boxster, the exhaust gases flow through a system with a single oval tailpipe made of brushed stainless steel. The 718 models come with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. The Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) is available as an option.

To improve fuel efficiency, the PDK has the further advanced auto start/stop function, which already shuts off the engine when the car is coasting to a stop. The PDK also features virtual gears that save fuel. When driving at a constant speed, the controller chooses the highest possible gear. To stabilize engine revs and prevent jolts due to running at revs that are too low, the clutch of the relevant gear is disengaged slightly to allow a slight amount of slip. The new roadsters are also impressive in their agile driving dynamics. The completely new chassis tuning once again improves cornering speeds of the mid-engine sports cars. Higher stabilizer and spring rates keep rolling and pitching motions as slight as possible. This further enhances ride comfort in the 718 Boxster. The tuning also increases solidity and improves 56

spring rebound on both small and large road bumps. The electromechanical steering, whose layout is ten per cent more direct, makes control of the 718 Boxster even more agile and easier to handle both on circuit tracks and in everyday traffic. The restyled rear body of the 718 Boxster has a stronger presence – especially due to the accent strip with integrated Porsche badge between the tail lights. The additional edge at the height of the reflectors also contributes to this effect. The rear body also has a sharper design. The completely redesigned lights stand out thanks to their threedimensional LED technology and four-point brake lights. Awaiting the driver in the cockpit of the 718 Boxster is the familiar Porsche interior environment, now upgraded with new elements.

The leather trim impresses with its uninterrupted stitching that extends right to the storage compartment. The redesigned upper part of the dash panel reflects the three-dimensional exterior design with its elevated air vents. Steering of the roadster is even more precise, with a 375-mm diameter sport steering wheel in the design of the 918 Spyder. A central element of the new interior layout is Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with mobile phone preparation, audio interfaces and the Sound Package Plus with 110 watts of audio power. The optional Connect module, for example, comprises a smartphone storage tray for wireless connection of the smartphone to the car's exterior antenna, an iPod-capable USB port on the center console, Apple CarPlay including “Siri" voice control and Porsche Car Connect.

Specifications for the Porsche 718 Boxster Displacement 1,988 cm3 Engine: Four-cylinder flat-engine with turbocharging; water cooling with thermal management and switchable water pump; camshaft adjustment and VarioCam Plus valve stroke switching for intake and exhaust; integrated dry sump lubrication and demand-controlled oil pump; mono turbocharging; indirect intercooling (two low-temperature air-water radiators and a water intercooler); dual-branch exhaust system with central stainless steel tailpipe; two three-way catalytic converters and on-board diagnostics for monitoring the emission control system; Petrol Direct Fuel Injection (DFI); mid-engine, rear-wheel drive system.

ABSENCE The breathtaking exhibition at Visual Therapy By Ashley Alleluya

In my mind, Shahad Bishara is slowly emerging as the person in Kuwait whose artistic eye must not be questioned. After having attended a handful of events that she's helped curate, I found myself attending Absence by photographer, Aziz Mutawa at Visual Therapy on a Thursday evening, drawn in by the artist she chose to give her support to. "I'm a huge fan of Shahad's initiatives and I'm honored to have had her curate the exhibition at her space. Shahad gave me the boost of confidence to finally exhibit after so much hesitation," Aziz gushed about Shahad, confirming that she really is the unofficial godmother of the artistic community. With this faith I walked into the familiar gallery, ready to immerse myself in it the best I could. The layout of Aziz's work was linear in display, but very non-linear once you begin taking them in. A row of photographs, all displayed alongside the walls of Visual Therapy's space, without any overt guidance about where you start from or how you should progress. Such is the mastery of the visual storytelling of Aziz Mutawa's work. It gives you multiple perspectives, countless pairings and a deceptively deep storyboard with a pick-your-own-adventure aesthetic. The settings of these adventures immediately piques my interest. "My father and I used to go on nature walks in Doha and explore the different textures of the coastal areas," Aziz told me of his choice of venue. 58

"Documenting the area, I began to feel such an intense attachment to the coast. Ever since then, I've seen earth textures as skin and started to introduce skin-like colors to my work." The visual language that Aziz uses is crisp with almost obsessively geometric lines and angles. Of his style, Aziz said, "it is so important to give each color tone its place to comfortably exist and breathe before seeping into the next element." I wonder what brought on the inspiration to incorporate these buildings, roads and areas into his theme. Aziz credits the "seemingly endless construction sites that started seeping out of the city and into the northern coast of Kuwait. With the increased pressure on housing, these pastel pink colored structures began to rise in the middle of nature reserves, giving me inspiration to create a narrative around these absent structures and the environment around them." As is with a lot evocative art, this series of photographs emphasizes the understanding that Aziz has with his model. "Afraa and her family are actually close friends of mine which made our communication during the shoot nonverbal. We both understood how the concept was relevant to both our lives," he explained. Around me, I heard phrases like "interesting angles" and "strange but fascinating" from the crowd. Wondering if this was the response he anticipated, I asked him about the feedback, to which he replied,"The biggest highlight for me was seeing the work come to life in print. I suggest that photographers start printing their work and running small exhibitions more often."

"From my pieces, 'Seaskin' got a lot of attention," Aziz said. "It was interesting to see how a small majority had the urban industrial images speak to them more than the nature and ocean ones," he continued, probably referring to the stark beauty that 'strandskin' possesses. 'Strandskin' to me was a gateway to exploring the black and yellow metal structures that seem to pop out of nowhere all around the region," Aziz offered. "This [the black and yellow metal structures] is what my next series will be exploring and I am already shaking out of excitement to start." Before I made my peace with the beauty of this exhibit, I needed to know what these pictures meant to Aziz personally. "I see a lot of myself in this series when I consider all the times I found myself absent," he replied. "Another side of this narrative talks about the accumulation of overlooked details that often leave us stranded," he elaborated. "This was why it was important for me to set this narrative in such an area where one is almost asked to get lost." In the process of finding his way into the natural reserve, Aziz surrendered himself to the language of the location, bringing to us a story that echoes the absence we feel daily on a multitude of levels. For introducing me to this part within me with his photography, I am grateful.

5 QUESTIONS YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING STRATEGY MUST BE ABLE TO ANSWER

By Barry Rodrigues

I would say about 60% of Kuwait’s population above 16 years of age is on social media in some form or the other. As the social media scene continues to evolve over time, the competition to earn ears and eyeballs has become quite tough especially for the brands that are putting out content. Many brands and marketers feel that their social media strategy needs to strike a balance between their audience’s needs and their brand’s business goals. To help create a somewhat balanced strategy, here are a few questions you should ask yourself before you embark on your social media journey. 1. How does my social media strategy fit within my digital marketing strategy? Your social media marketing efforts should be a part of your overall digital marketing strategy and should have some kind of harmony with your other digital (and sometimes) traditional marketing efforts. Offering a seamless integration between channels and touch-points gives customers and prospects the feeling of consistency and familiarity and this is an important ingredient to the customer journey. 2. What is the objective of creating my channel? Every strategy needs to be pointed towards a goal so as long as you have a goal that is realistic and measurable; you can work on achieving it. Examples of goals can be – increasing the number of followers on your Facebook by a certain amount, increasing engagement on your Instagram by 30%, boost referral traffic to your website by 40% etc. You should set benchmark goals that will help you measure the success of your efforts periodically so that you can keep track of your success. 3. How will my brand measure effectiveness? The benchmark goals I talked about in my previous sentence will come in handy here because they will help you determine if you have achieved your goals in a meaningful way. If you have, you’re on the right track and if you haven’t, it gives you a chance to reconfigure your channel, optimize your strategy and maybe even rethink it to better suit your master-plan. 4. Who is my audience? If you want to create a connection with your customers and followers, it is imperative that you understand their interests, desires and motivations. The best way to do this is to create a customer persona which is a general representation of who your customer is. Most social media channels offer basic analytics that are tailored to gather classified information 60

like gender, age, interests etc. And if you want more specific information, there are quite a few paid services that can give you that kind of information. The idea here is to figure out which of your social media channels are working better than the others as well as the kind of content your customers consume or even in some cases, what actions are they taking. 5. How often will I engage on each channel? The consistency I talked about earlier in this article is the key to creating a kind of pattern with your followers on your channels. But that does not mean you have to post a dozen times a day on Instagram or on the flip side, post a new topic once every two weeks. Once your customer persona shows you how often your followers are reacting to your most optimized posts, you should get a bearing on how often the optimal time to post is and act on it. Be consistent on your channel but do not overwhelm your followers with content that will eventually push them away. The best way to handle this is to create a weekly or monthly plan that will give you sense of direction and to keep it flexible so that you can add and delete where necessary. All your research and planning will be for

nothing if you haven’t defined the tactics, tools and resources you’ll need to execute your strategy. Combine your social media strategy with your other digital and content marketing efforts and even your traditional marketing channels like print and radio to create a tactical mix that appeals to your target market. Also, make sure you define who within your organization will be responsible for execution and measurement of this plan. Rest assured, if you ask yourself these questions before embarking on your social media journey, you are bound to make inroads into understanding your fans and customers better and all of this will eventually lead to more business.

WHEN YOUR SUPERPOWER IS PANICKING

By Dr Susannah Joy Schuilenberg

Anxiety is a thin stream of fear trickling through the mind. If encouraged, it cuts a mental channel into which all other thoughts are drained. ~A. Somers Roche Ask anyone who has experienced debilitating, soul-destroying anxiety – they’ll tell you it saps mental energy, drains vitality, and leaves behind a sweatdrenched and frazzled human being. One for whom life has become a series of neverending negotiations over perfectly ordinary things. Going to the grocery store, or to work, or to coffee with a friend takes up so much head space that the activity itself isn’t even enjoyed. Life ceases to be mundane ennui interspersed with interesting or exciting moments, and instead becomes a living hell, fraught with visions of horrible things happening at the most inconvenient moments. Quality of life plummets, and without intervention, the list of ‘safe’ places becomes shorter and shorter, and for some, disappears entirely. Life is lived within the four walls of home, and even the thought of going out the front door into the world induces a near fatal panic attack. In a study funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, stats about anxiety were collected from around the world. Did you know anxiety is the most common mental health disorder worldwide? On average, this disorder in the global population is about 8% (1 in 13 people – this means statistically, if you know 13 people one of them struggles with anxiety. If you can’t think of someone you know with anxiety, it’s probably you). Anxiety is one of the most treatable mental health issues but only 1/3 of individuals meeting the criteria for a diagnosis of clinical anxiety will seek treatment. This may be due to ongoing cultural and social stigmatization, also a global issue. Both depression and anxiety are still, in large part, considered to be something one just “gets over,” or worse yet, perceived as selfinflicted or self-sustaining. We all worry about different things, but the key is, we don’t get stuck there. Like all mental health conditions, “functioning” is the key factor in diagnosis. Anxiety severe enough to limit someone’s ability to participate in life is definitely dysfunctional. I mean, who chooses to live like that? So, here’s the deal: 62

Anxiety is common. Really, really common. It’s also completely treatable. Treatment involves working with a mental health professional experienced in anxiety disorders, using a combination of therapy and short-term medication appropriate to the individual. While medication will suppress the nervous system, thus dampening severe anxiety and preventing panic attacks, it is not a cure. Robust data says therapy which reframes thinking patterns and smoothens out those mental channels is the long term answer. This problem has the potential to completely wreck your life, taking up so much mental space that there’s no room left for living. Do a little selftest. Run through these five questions and see whether or not you’re one of the 8% of people living with a degree of anxiety that’s not normal. If it turns out that you might be doing just that, don’t become one of the 66% who never ask for help to recover. Quick – Yes or no? 1. I make decisions about my daily activities based on how anxious I feel at the moment. 2. I regularly cancel dates or feign illness to avoid

having to leave my house. 3. I’ve had at least one full blown, “I’m going to die” panic attack in the past seven days. 4. There are certain things I don’t do or places I won’t go because I know I’ll have a panic attack. 5. I can no longer always identify a reason or trigger for feelings of extreme anxiety or a panic attack. If you answered “yes” to 3 or more of those questions, consider finding some help. Your life has probably already been shrinking and you may need to acknowledge to yourself that the anxiety is getting worse and the panic attacks are happening more often. It doesn’t have to be that way. If answering these questions caused you to realize that you actually feel a lot of lowgrade chronic anxiety, know that life can be better. Anxiety is treatable. Take your life back.

REACHING NIRVANA

Skyscraper Yoga classes by Project 5 Miles

By bazaar staff

Bader AlEssa and Anwaar AlRefae

We all know the song and dance: we want to be healthy, but life makes it difficult. Even with Kuwait’s expansion of healthy eateries and the explosion of exercise outlets, people are still finding it difficult to balance their work and social lives with one that is more active. Some don’t have the financial means to fit it into their budgets, and don’t have the luxury of time to handle working out in between their busy schedules. So what happens? Many people end up signing up for an expensive gym, paying a hefty fee upfront, and having it take over their lives to get their money’s worth, or end up only going once or twice a week (if they’re lucky), only technically spending a small fraction of what they invested in. 64

That’s where Bader AlEssa and Anwaar AlRefae come in, as they know the story far too well. “It’s been solving a big problem for me, to be honest," Bader says, "and I feel a lot of people can relate-which is why we started this platform in the first place.” Project 5 Miles (P5M) began three years ago as a regular running group that specialized in bringing people together to form a community outside of their working hours for the sake of finding healthier habits in their busy lives. Today, P5M is still standing strong with seasonal activities such as running and outdoor circuit training dedicated to the community, but have also opened up a very special offering to the general public. Coupled with Anwaar's online savvy to translate the experience into code which plays a vital role in bolstering an active lifestyle- and Bader's skilled background in engineering and commitment to creating the community, P5M’s easily accessible, pop-up studio in Al Hamra Luxury Tower was born, offering yoga to the masses!

Why yoga, you may ask? “Yoga is a practice that I have a lot of respect for,” Bader says as he takes me on a tour of the space – a large room containing huge windows that overlook a breathtaking view of the city and the coast – something that is very well achieved with the space being situated on the 55th floor of the urban skyscraper. “I’m not necessarily skilled in it, but I’ve been practicing since the studio's opening, and I love the way that it makes you rely on your own body with the minimal use of tools to achieve fitness. It’s definitely a different approach to strength balance and health – and it’s exciting!” What’s even more exciting is the variety and location. P5M space offers all types of classes held by different yoga instructors in Kuwait’s active community to cater to that need. There are so many styles taught by freelance instructors who specialize in different practices. They teach classes from Ashtanga to Vinyasa, to gentle and

more core-demanding flows, and there are even workshops! Sanaa, one of their instructors, teaches a different small workshop every Saturday, sometimes focusing on core, other times on handstands, making it’s all extremely beneficial for any person’s practice. If you don’t fancy yourself a supreme yogi, don’t sweat it! The classes offered at the studio vary in level, as well as time. Our personal favorite: The early morning classes held on weekdays before traditional working hours. With the spectacular view the studio has to offer, towering over many in a structure towering at 413m high, yoga classes held at 6:15 a.m. twice a week during the week are expertly timed in tune to the sun’s rising from the east. We couldn’t think of a better way to start the morning. Bader’s personal favorite? “I think all the instructors are great, but Sara Al Sharif’s classes hit close to home for me: because she herself suffered the aftermaths of an accident before getting into yoga, her practice is dedicated

to healing. I have lower back problems, so I find her classes in particular very beneficial for what my body needs.” The P5M studio is accommodating to all your yoga needs from class type, targeting specific areas of fitness that you crave to fulfill, to incidentals. They provide mats, yoga blocks, straps and blankets, and even have a bathroom where you can change and freshen up before or after classes, making your overall practice less stressful. They also pride themselves further in accessibility and flexibility by offering the studio privately for uses beyond yoga. So if you’re a personal trainer that’s looking for a space to work with clients and have the tools to use, contact them for rentals. In addition to this, they're looking forward to their expansion, and are currenty working on introducing an eclectic range of fitness outlets surpassing yoga. What's next? Dance! How to sign up? It’s extremely easy to pop into P5M for a class, just check out their informative

website! Classes are as low as KD 5 in price, and are offered at reasonable hours throughout the day – even during busier corporate lunchtime. Just pick the class you want to go to, register and pay in advance, and you’re good to go. We hope to see you at some of their early morning classes, early birds, as we cannot help but stress that the majestic sunrise coupled with your yoga practice is something you will not want to miss! They say that practicing yoga will lift you to a state of peace, relaxation and serenity, the basic components of Nirvana-- nestled 55 stories in the air.

EXPLORING JAIPUR: WHERE TO GO AND WHAT TO DO What makes Jaipur a must-visit destination in India? By Deepa Pant

Love art, architecture, crafts and shopping? Then bustling Jaipur is for you. The city in Rajasthan is dotted with palaces, forts, slick new shopping malls as well as streets lined with souvenir shops. Whatever your whim, there’s a way to explore Jaipur the way you want. Begin your day by visiting Nahargarh Fort, one of the most recognizable sites in the city. The fort, which means ‘Abode of the Tigers,’ was built to protect the city. The panorama from the top provides the perfect Instagrammable moment. Next, head over to Amber Fort, overlooking the Matoa Lake. Its main draw is the Sheesh Mahal or ‘Palace of Mirrors.’ As the name suggests, the walls and ceiling are adorned with mirrors. Enjoy a sunset and maybe the evening son et lumiere (sound and light show). Wrap up the experience with a steaming hot cup of masala chai. Head to City Palace, an 18th century royal palace that shows a grandioise amalgamation of Rajput, Mughal and European architecture. Wander its rooms examining priceless art and artifacts. Don’t skip Hawa Mahal or the ‘Palace of Winds.’ It is a five-storied building made of pink sandstone and has 356 charming jharokhas or latticed windows. An architectural delight, it is a fine blend of Hindu and Islamic architecture and was built in 1799. Consider taking a Heritage Walk combined with an audio tour. 66

Allot time to explore the area around Hawa Mahal for a shopping adventure at Bapu Bazaar and Johri Bazaar. You’ll find everything from textiles and blue pottery to sequined footwear, embroidered bags, stoles and jewellery. Getting lost in the colorful bazaars of Jaipur has its own charm so we suggest you don’t stick to a timetable - this one time. Don’t forget to stop at shop number 120, where you will find Tikam Chand. Get a sepia or black and white portrait taken with his 150-year-old Carl Zeiss camera, a gift from the Maharaja of Jaipur to his grandfather. No Instagram filter can match his stunning pictures. Do find time to visit the Albert Hall Museum. Built in 1876, it was reportedly modelled after London’s Victoria and Albert museum. Jal Mahal, Jantar Mantar and Birla Mandir are other attractions that you could visit depending on how long you have to stay in Jaipur. Textiles and block printing lovers shouldn’t miss the Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing. Situated in a beautiful haveli, it is merely a 5-minute walk from Amber market place. See intricate wooden blocks being carved by hand. Not content with just seeing a block-printing demonstration? Visit Kaladera workshop run by Damodar Nama, and book a block-printing table for a few hours and give it a go yourself. Traveling with children? Visit Clay Botik and do a workshop on wheel and hand pottery with the talented Deeksha Gupta. If you go at the beginning of the trip, she will even fire your creations and pack them carefully in bubble wrap so you can take them home.

Animal lover? Visit the elephant village at Subhash Chowk. Here you can bond with the jumbos, feed them bananas and sugar cane, help give them a bath and even enjoy bareback riding. Pick up luxurious cotton clothes at everyone’s favorite retailer, Anokhi. Stop by their organic cafe for a light salad and herbal tea. Pick up hand-crafted textiles, luxurious cotton quilts and rugs at Fab India. For baubles, visit the Gem Palace, run by Kasliwals, who were once the court jewelers for Mughal royalty. Another store worth visiting is Amrapali, with its exquisite, hand-crafted jewelry. Why not try your hand at traditional Rajasthani cooking? Arrange for a class at the picturesque heritage hotel Diggi Palace. Jaipur is a foodie haven. Sip sweetened lassis, eat a kachori, bite into peppery poppadum, taste Pandit ji’s kulfi at Hawa Mahal bazaar or indulge in hot gulab jamuns. Head to Laxmi Misthan Bhandar or LMB for a traditional Rajasthani thali meal. Spend an entire day gorging on sumptuous Rajasthani food and immerse yourself in a traditional cultural experience at Chokhi Dhani, near Sanganer. There’s plenty to do in Jaipur – whether you’re on a tight budget or go overboard, and stay at a highend luxury resort. Jaipur is a comfortable 45-minute flight away from India’s capital New Delhi and easily accessible from Mumbai as well. CONTAMINATION

Industrial pollution affecting the deepest parts of the Pacific Ocean

By Sean Greene

Industrial pollution has reached even the most remote corners of Earth: the deepest part of the sea. Scientists have discovered “extraordinary levels” of polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, in the Mariana and Kermadec trenches, two of the deepest ocean chasms on the planet. “Trenches have been considered as pristine environments, but also (given their locations and topography) as likely sinks for contaminants that enter the marine environment,” Alan Jamieson, a marine ecologist at Newcastle University in England, wrote in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution. Banned in the 1970s, PCBs were once widely used as dielectric and coolant fluids in transformers, capacitors and other electrical devices. About 1.3 million tons of the chemical was produced, and an estimated 35 percent of that is now residing in coastal sediments, according to the study. Known as persistent organic pollutants, these contaminants do not degrade naturally and can stick around in the environment for decades. The chemicals bond with bits of plastic and other kinds of organic debris, and are transported in air, soil and coastal waters. They’ve even been found in the Arctic, far from industrialized areas. While exploring life in the ocean’s hadal zone, a region 3.7 to 6.8 miles deep, Jamieson and colleagues measured contaminants in tiny shrimplike scavengers called amphipods. These crustaceans feed at the bottom of ocean trenches, ingesting any contaminants found in the environment. The pollutants are then stored in their in fat tissue. The contaminants spread through the food chain when the amphipods are eaten by bigger animals, such as fish. Using deep-sea landing vehicles equipped with baited traps, the scientists collected samples of three species of amphipod from the Mariana Trench, in the western Pacific, and the Kermadec Trench, off New Zealand. Each of the 12 animals they collected was contaminated. “Regardless of depth, regardless of trench, regardless of species,” Jamieson said, pollutants “were present in all of them.” The study found elevated concentrations of contaminants, including flame retardants, in the upper portions of the trenches, about 4.5 miles deep. But amphipods with the most pollutants came from the Mariana Trench, possibly because the chasm is located closer to industrialized regions and beneath the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Plastic debris and dead animals 68

contaminated with industrial chemicals sink into the ocean, where they’re eaten by the amphipods. The PCBs and flame retardants found in the trenches can have “devastating effects on the hormonal, immune and reproductive systems,” wrote Katherine Dafforn, an ecotoxicologist at the University of New South Wales, in an article accompanying the study. In parts of the world considered relatively pollution-free, the concentration of PCBs is less than one nanogram per gram of material sampled. (There are 1 billion nanograms in a gram.) In polluted areas, that level can rise to several hundred nanograms per gram. PCB levels in the crustaceans from the Mariana Trench were up to 50 times greater than in crabs from the Liaohe River, one of the most

polluted waterways in China, the study found. While not as common as PCB pollution, the level of flame-retardants in the deep ocean was comparable to or higher than levels in coastal waters off New Zealand. The “disturbing” results show the deep ocean is much more connected to the surface than most people think, Dafforn wrote. Jamieson added that the deepest point in the ocean, Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, is only about seven miles deep — about half the length of Manhattan. That’s far from remote, he said. In future studies, Jamieson said he hopes to determine how these pollutants affect the physiology of deep-sea creatures and their surrounding ecosystem.

CODE TO INSPIRE

Programming for young Afghani women

By Murhaf Abdalqader

How do you solve a problem? You study it, plan a solution accordingly and communicate it with the relevant parties. Using the right tools, you put your plan into action and hope it works out. Sometimes it goes off without a hitch, other times it falls flat on its face and you have to go back to the drawing board. Coding is essentially problem solving applied on a computer. Code to Inspire is a new program that enables its students to strengthen their problem-solving abilities by learning how to code. Given time and experience, a programmer can come up with a solution for most issues in life ranging from restaurant food delivery apps in rural areas, to landing Apollo 11 on the moon. 70

Third world countries are in need of these talented people more than most. Technology cuts deepest in developing country, where something as simple as a mobile phone can have the largest effect that reverberates in all echelons of society. Coders in these countries have come up with solutions to things that may sound basic to most of us, but can be life changing for the residents. One of these countries is Afghanistan. In a country crippled by war for decades now, opportunity doesn’t come around very often, particularly for young women: 68% of them have no education and are illiterate, of those lucky enough to receive any, one in five make it to college. Even with that put aside, women only form 16% of the Afghani workforce. Right about now, you’re not picturing a work-market ripe with opportunities just waiting to be plucked. Code to

Inspire hopes to change that. Founded by Fereshteh Forough in 2015 as a campaign on Indiegogo, the 1-year program gives young Afghani women an opportunity to change their lives. It teaches them the necessary skills to help get them going in the booming world of IT. Just a month ago, the program conducted a graduation ceremony for its first class. These young women are now able to make an impact on their society and earn some money to support themselves and their families. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime ‌ or in this case, a woman and coding skills!

STYLE WITH A CONSCIENCE

H&M’s new Conscious Exclusive collection

By bazaar staff

We at bazaar are huge fans of the environment, and with six Conscious Exclusive collections under their belt, so are H&M! Another thing we both have in common besides our mutual love for a sustainable Earth is: Saving the world, with style. This is why we were overjoyed to learn that H&M’s newest Conscious Exclusive collection will be released in selected stores on April 20th – just in time for Earth Day! With excitement in our hearts for an environmentally friendly line we just had to sit with Ann-Sofie Johansson. Picking the H&M Creative Advisor’s brain regarding the inspiration and aspiration towards this considerate collection was just what we needed. Did we mention the collection is made from entirely sustainable materials, including their trademark registered, all-new Bionic Yarn? You’ve worked on many Conscious Exclusive collections for H&M in the past, what makes this collection different? The creation of this year’s collection was inspired by the human senses, which is made noticeable in the choice of materials and embellishments – how they look, but also how they feel and sound. The embellishments are an important part of the collection with large sequins that warp the surfaces and make their own music, mixed with tiny beads to create fantastic shapes, while the jacquards and embroideries are tactile and both sheer and three dimensional. Can you tell us more about the pioneering sustainable material, BIONIC? How was it developed and how long did it take to produce it? Bionic Yarn is made with plastic recovered from shorelines, waterways and coastal communities protecting the oceans from plastic pollution. Founded by Tyson Toussaint, Tim Coombs and Pharrell Williams, Bionic Yarn makes the material and yarn that our suppliers buy to produce the garments for Conscious Exclusive. It is made from collecting and recovering waste from shorelines of Hainan, China, and is refined into chips that are mixed with other reclaimed PET bottles. Then, the chips are heated and pulled apart into fibers and spun into yarn. The yarn is then woven into fabric that in turn sewn into Conscious Exclusive masterpieces. 72

Ann-Sofie Johansson

The delicate, plisse dress made of BIONIC fabric is simply stunning! How did this design come about, and why was a festive gown chosen to showcase this new, sustainable fabric? The H&M Conscious Exclusive collections aim to move H&M’s environmentally friendly fashion development and innovation forward towards a sustainable fashion future. The collections are made from sustainable materials and offer our design team an opportunity to experiment with new and interesting sustainable materials. This is actually the first time that Bionic Yarn has been used to make a beautiful and delicate evening wear, and to make the beautiful Bionic plissé dress in the Conscious Exclusive collection, it takes 89 standard size PET bottles. This year, you are offering kids’ fashion for the first time within the collection, tell us more about the pieces and how this will influence future generations on being conscious in their fashion choices? Conscious Exclusive is a contemporary collection made to be worn for both special occasions and every day lifestyles, so we are very happy to be able to include a selection of styles for kids. The kids’ collection includes many pieces such as beautiful little tulle dresses, and the softest structured blazers and trousers with a charming street style feel. What are some other key pieces to look forward to in this collection? The blue brocade jacket is definitely one of the key pieces of the collection and one of my personal favorites. Other highlights are the pink short cocktail dress with recycled polyester sequins, as well as the tuxedo that has been reimagined as a lounge jacket in organic silk and TENCEL twill, paired with trousers that playfully flounce at the leg. What are some of your favorite pieces from the H&M Conscious Exclusive collection? I love the blue brocade jacket. It’s a real statement piece that can be worn in so many different ways: with denim for a casual look, or with frill-hemmed black trousers for a more sophisticated look. It’s a precious piece I would save in my wardrobe forever and take out for special occasions. H&M is constantly working towards a more sustainable fashion future. What are some H&M’s planned actions to realize this future goal? At H&M Group, we are constantly on the lookout for innovative materials and processes that can make our products more sustainable. Today, 26 percent of the materials that H&M Group uses to make our clothes are organic, recycled or come from other sustainable fabrics. While we are still currently one of the world’s biggest users of organic cotton, recycled polyester and Lyocell, this year, we’re happy to add Bionic Yarn as a new sustainable material used in our garments. Our goal is to increase the share of such fabrics in our total material use on a yearly basis, making more environmentally friendly choices available to a larger group of people. We hope that that this will help lift these materials to scale to create a demand for further innovation; and by actively investing large resources, we will drive sustainable development throughout the entire garment life cycle. This Conscious Exclusive collection will be available in selected stores across the Middle East on April 20, 2017. For more information, follow H&M on Facebook and Instagram @HM. 73

MEET OUR PLANTCESTORS

How plants can provide clues about the spread of ancient civilizations

By Amina Khan

Indiana Jones may have found a few more lost temples if he’d known a thing or two about plants. By mapping the distribution of tree species with known archaeological sites in the Amazon basin, scientists have discovered that humans shaped the makeup of the Amazon forests over thousands of years. The findings, described in the journal Science, highlight the complex relationship between pre-industrial humans and the ecology of the environments they lived in — and may offer archaeologists a new tool with which to look for undiscovered human settlements. The rainforests of the Amazon — those that have not been chopped or burned down to make use of lumber or clear land for crops — are largely seen as “pristine” terrain, largely untouched by humans. But before Europeans arrived in the Americas, indigenous peoples had been domesticating (or partly domesticating) species that were useful for food or other resources for thousands of years. Surely they had left some mark on the makeup of their environments, even if their settlements were hidden from sight. 74

“I was wondering if we can detect in the forest effect of past societies — and how we can use the species in the forest to really see these effects,” said lead author Carolina Levis, a Ph.D. student in ecology at Brazil’s National Institute for Amazonian Research and Wageningen University and Research Center in the Netherlands. Using 1,170 forest plots in the Amazon Tree Diversity Network, a data-sharing collaboration between more than 180 researchers to track tree diversity in the Amazon Basin and the Guyana Shield, the scientists identified 4,962 species, of which 227 were “hyperdominant,” or extremely abundant. They then took 1,091 of those forest plots in non-flooded lowland Amazonian forests and layered them on top of a map of more than 3,000 archaeological sites in the region. These sites include pre-Columbian settlements; earthworks such as mounds, causeways, raised fields and terraces; and rock art, including paintings and petroglyphs. The researchers focused on 85 tree species that Amazonian people are known to have cultivated over several thousand years, including Brazil nut, cacao and acai. Twenty of those species were “hyperdominants” — which was about five times higher than would be expected by chance.

And the closer these cultivated plants were to an archaeological site, the more abundant and more diverse they were. These forests, then, are not just an ecological resource to be treasured and preserved — they’re also a part of cultural heritage, Levis said. In fact, following the domesticated plants might allow scientists to find undiscovered archaeological sites. “It would be very cool to use the plants to detect new sites because archaeological sites are sometimes difficult to find in the forest,” she said. After all, she added, “Many of these groups are not there anymore to tell their story.” That’s all the more reason to preserve these ecosystems, many of which are under threat from deforestation for lumber or to make way for plantations of exotic crops such as soybeans, she added. Many of the trees being chopped or burned down have been useful to humans for thousands of years, and are still in use by local populations. And those pre-Colombian peoples managed to cultivate these plants within the forest ecosystems, rather than completely destroying them. “We should learn more from this type of food production that people used in the past that didn’t lead to widespread deforestation,” she said.

I HAD CAREER EXPERTS MAKE OVER MY CRAPPY COVER LETTER Why you’re not getting the job By Rich Bellis

When I was a couple years into my career and trying to leave my first job out of college, I sent around many truly horrendous cover letters. Recently, I discovered one languishing at the bottom of my “sent” folder, where it very much belongs. When I clicked the attachment, I was greeted with a hefty 482-word missive that now makes me shudder, and the hiring manager who never called me in for an interview probably had the same response. So I asked a few career experts to give my sad cover letter a retroactive makeover, to see if there were any lessons to be learned in the process. I thought I could spot my cover letter’s main failings–it’s overly long, way too formal, and pretentious as all hell. But Dana Leavy-Detrick, chief creative scribe at Brooklyn Resume Studio, and Katy Martin, career developer at Dev Bootcamp Chicago, uncovered quite a few more issues. “The document ultimately struck me as verbose and methodical,” says Martin. LeavyDetrick agreed. After all those words, she said, she still had “a difficult time picturing who this candidate is, and seeing a unique profile that really grabs attention.” In other words, I had no personality. “Cover letters are intended to show you off and really captivate the reader,” Martin adds. “I know one candidate who got a job offer because the cover letter was a playwright-style script of the candidate and an interviewer talking. Be quirky and professional at the same time,” she advises. Leavy-Detrick suggests that every job applicant embrace an element of storytelling. “The best ones create a unique and compelling narrative around the candidate, and their personal brand shines through.” You can do that no matter what level of experience you have, she says. “Companies don’t just hire on requirements and qualifications–they also make hiring decisions based on culture fit and potential, and neither of those comes through in this letter.” Both experts also said my cover letter lacks confidence and impact; it starts flat and ends weak. Martin suggests leaving out salary expectations, which I mention toward the bottom, since it risks selling yourself short–you want them to finish thinking about your value, not what you’ll cost. I suspect I only included it because I was asked to, but I could have ignored that instruction. Leavy-Detrick thinks the bigger problem is 76

where I basically invite them to negotiate me down before even meeting me. And my call to action is simply for the hiring manager to “feel free to contact me,” as opposed to a more selfassured request for an actual interview. I asked Leavy-Detrick and Martin to take a merciless red pen to my cover letter, and they graciously obliged. For starters, both experts suggest a more powerful intro. “The opening line does not capture my attention,” says Leavy-Detrick, “and it’s also vague.” Martin concurs: “Try to stay away from stating the obvious, such as ‘I am writing to express my interest in a position as a production editor . . .’” Instead, says Leavy-Detrick, it’s better to open “with an immediate, high-level overview of your expertise and what you bring to the table. If you don’t pique their interest and qualify yourself right away, you may lose your reader.” She points out that there’s the glimmer of a narrative at the start of the second paragraph, which could be spun

into a concrete story about why I’m interested in this position at this moment and the perfect person to fill it. Then there’s the fact that my cover letter summarizes my resume – a common fault. “As you describe your valuable work experience,” Martin suggests, “highlight a specific thing that happened” instead of “just describing your responsibilities or accomplishments. If I know you’ve been in the trenches of this particular problem or worked through this particular incident, it’s much more believable that you’re experienced.” That would also take fewer words. “The letter is very heavy on text, which makes it difficult to scan,” says Leavy-Detrick. “One solution would be to call out some of your key points as bullets– highlighting the qualities, accomplishments, or skill sets most relevant to the role.” Making it clear, simple, and easy to eyeball. Martin just recommends a zippier, more narrative approach overall.

ACE IS ACE

ACE Hardware: where all your needs are met

By bazaar staff

We are adaptable creatures. We are adventurous, and tend to constantly search for any touches and tools to make the most of our environment. When the weather warms up, we want to take advantage of moderate to hot, spring and summer temperatures by adding leisurely activities to compliment the season. We prioritize our homes and are in constant search for any elements to help put together new living spaces, or to enhance and recreate what we love about old ones. And we’re lucky to have one hub that caters to all those needs right here in Kuwait—ACE Hardware. ACE Hardware is arguably the first all-inclusive hardware store that was introduced to Kuwait during the rise of international franchises in the ‘90s, and in the midst of so much variety sweeping the nation, it remains to be that one 78

place where you could go to that would truly make all your dreams come true. A place where you could find everything within one location, making it easy to fulfill all your needs, and widen your horizons to the perspective that really, anything is possible. After walking into ACE Hardware in Al-Rai, we found ourselves in overwhelming excitement while exploring all the options this great hub has to offer. It was clear through the store’s set up, summer was in the air and that they were prepared to help customers enjoy it to the fullest! We couldn’t help but fawn over the summertime essentials filling the store, like patio and balcony furniture designed to heighten the enjoyable spring and summer nights, and grills ranging in all sizes and portability, catering to any type of barbecue event you may frequent within the coming months (Mutla’a Ridge day, anyone?). What also caught our eye was their great selection of leisurely and advanced dune buggies for desert and chalet shenanigans—those were enough to get our minds planning our next outskirts excursion to make the most out of summer the ACE way.

But what had our inner Pinterest-loving souls beaming with joy was all the DIY (Do it Yourself) tools on offer, because, raise your hand if this sounds familiar: You tend to find yourselves fascinated with all those great Buzzfeed articles filled with tips on how to update your home and refurbish your furniture on a budget, and are always pausing the scroll on your Facebook page to watch Nifty’s latest life-hack videos. 2017 is the height of the Do It Yourself generation, and those of us living in Kuwait share a similar qualm: “where the heck would I be able to find (insert tool here) to create, remake or fix that?” Don’t hesitate to walk down the aisles of power tools, paint and whosits, whatsits and doodads. ACE proudly caters to every last one of your basic renovation and homeownership needs, and promises an easy and helpful experience in making your visions turn to reality. If you’re building your dream home, or you’re giving things a fresh coat of paint, any tools to achieve your DIY goals are available. There’s absolutely nothing better than doing it yourself, and knowing that you’ve done a good job, and with the best quality

materials to help accessible at your fingertips, your own craftiness coupled with ACE’s excellent inventory makes the best team there is. Because the core of the ACE hardware brand is to provide customers with the right tools to be able to complete their homecare needs on their own, they select their products based on tool practicality to contribute to the seamlessness of our DIY projects. Coupled with the fact that the USA is known to have a prominent culture of hardware and home tools that are easy to use, this American store brings in the best of the best straight from the source when it comes to stocking their products and we can be rest assured that we’ll find even the most random tool that’s essential to tufting your own headboard from scratch. What if you aren’t DIY savvy but want to be? As a hesitant DIYer who hasn’t graduated past ideas, I riddled this question to Mr. Rozbeh Zarei, General Manager of ACE as I was perusing the paint aisle and fantasizing about sprucing up an old table of mine at home. “We ensure stocking tools for all experience levels, to accommodate both first-time homeowners and those who are more trained with DIY. We also pride ourselves in having a very knowledgeable staff, who provide great guidance for the use of the tools,” he assured me. ACE’s brand recognition of being “The Helpful Place” proves to be true in this respect. Most utility and specialty stores offer products that are tailored for someone who is already in that field of work, but ACE is inclusive to its customer base and leaves no DIYer behind. “We really believe in providing our customers the best DIY tools on the market, because to us, these projects are more fun and rewarding than hiring a handyman to come in and take care of it for you,” Mr. Zarei says. “And through social media, we’ve noticed that the concept of DIY is on the rise, especially towards the generation of newlyweds and young adults moving into their first houses and apartments. This is why ACE Hardware as a brand makes products that are easy to use for even the most inexperienced crafters.” And then I, inexperienced crafter extraordinaire, asked for assistance as we hunted the aisles for the tools to recreate my table. As the kind salesman encouraged me to opt for spray paint rather than brush paint, I was skeptical, until he proceeded to skillfully transform an old tabletop from beige to a sleek black, demonstrating how easy it was to just do it myself. And just like that, with the help from the most helpful place in Kuwait, my DIY fear vanished. Next stop? Their gardening section to craft that DIY three-tiered herb planter I once saw on Nifty!

ACE Hardware is located in Al Rai, Hawalli’s Tunis Street, and in Egaila. Follow them on Instagram and Facebook @acekuwait, and visit their website at www.acekuwait.com for more information. 79

FRATELLI ROSSETTI MASTERFUL MEN’S SHOES, MADE IN ITALY

By bazaar staff

There is a love affair continuing to develop between Italy and Kuwait, and the men of this country are really benefiting from this. They get to experience Italian flair for both food and fashion right here, at home. A delightful little gem that has just newly opened can now be found on the ground floor of the elegant Arraya Centre. Fratelli Rossetti houses a men's collection which delivers the best that an artisanal shoemaker has to offer. A broad selection of timeless styles is available to choose from with something to satisfy every man. Shoeaholic or not, it will be a real challenge to leave with just the one pair of shoes.

80

Step inside the doors and you are faced with a simply designed interior with dark shelving alcoves set into the olive color-washed walls. This setting provides a harmonizing contrast against the finely polished and burnished brogues, proving the rich hand-finishing of the calf-skin leathers used in Fratelli Rossetti gentlemen’s dress shoes. One of the more stylish examples which is making a splash globally this season is the stunning two tassel moccasin, a firm Milanese favorite. The blue version of this is the true highlight of this collection. Fine craftsmanship brings out the natural striations in the leather, and you can see variations of color within the same shoe. The beauty of this is that no one shoe is the same, and all exhibit gorgeous hues of cobalt blue to midnight navy. This style matches the class of a summer white dishdasha perfectly. It can also be paired confidently with a rolled-up skinny jean or khaki Chinos; such is the successful application of Italian sartorial styling. If you fancy something a little sportier, the classic sneakers feel both bouncy yet firm underfoot, and look great too! The bold patches of red and blue leather against a base of ecru suede on a white base, sharply define the clean, fresh look. If smart casual is more your style than sportswear, the derby deck shoes feature a doublewoven leather design that comes in brown, black or navy. This debonair shoe is ultra lightweight and great for the coming warmer season. Wear without socks! Or, at least with invisibles. The highly trained staff in Fratelli Rossetti have nearly three decades of retail experience between them. Take the time to enjoy this expertise where they can fit and guide you skillfully through the classic styles as well as the latest Fratelli Rossetti summer collection.

Fratelli Rossetti can be found on the ground floor of the Arraya Centre. For more information, please call 2299 7672. 81

LUCA ROSSETTI

The man behind the elegance By bazaar staff

When an established Italian brand like Fratelli Rossetti arrives with its first store in Kuwait, we take notice. CEO Luca Rossetti, youngest son of founder Renzo Rossetti, flew in for the official opening and graciously offered to spend some time in the Arraya Centre boutique with bazaar. Luca sits down, and with absolutely no need for it, humbly apologizes for his English – which is excellent, but delightfully accented. I immediately look to his shoes which, of course, are Rossetti, an elegant black moccasin and in wonderful condition. I know this is your first visit but, have you had much of a chance to get an impression of Kuwait? As the plane approached I saw the Kuwait Towers and it is such a beautiful view – I took many pictures. I am impressed with the Kuwaiti people; they are so stylish. Someone told me about this, but I saw for myself and it’s true. I find the people very trendy and fashionable here, just like Milan! It’s coming up to 65 years now – are you doing anything to celebrate? We are making a few plans but actually my father Renzo really started in 1949. He worked for another shoe factory and then on Saturdays and Sundays he would come in to work for himself. There were no official employers after the war, everything was made in the black market. He started doing ice skating shoes, bike shoes, football shoes. And the name of the company was Yankee, he chose a British name because it was more trendy. Later his brother, Renato, joined him and the fratelli (brothers) worked together as Fratelli Rossetti. With traditional shoe making you have the workmanship of artisanal craftsman. What do you do as an organization and business to ensure that you maintain the skills of these artisans? We collaborate in our area with local schools but the most important thing is to pass on to the younger generation these skills. They are passed on from father to son, and employers teach apprentices their artisanal secrets. Being a family business helps us as we take all the know-how from our father, so we understand how important it is to have this fluid exchange of knowledge. Tradition is important in luxury but success goes hand in hand with innovation. How does Fratelli Rossetti innovate? We are working very closely with different designers. Our role is to find the balance between new ideas and the DNA of the brand. Customers here will be pleased to know that we have an exclusive shoe to the Fratelli Rossetti store here – which they can only get at the store in the Arraya Centre and nowhere else in the world! 82

If you could have anyone in the world wear your shoes who would it be? For us the most important thing is that the ordinary customer wears our shoes. People who are modern and want a shoe that goes well and is comfortable – basically people who appreciate quality. We are a niche brand and we like to showcase our history quietly and not be overthe-top with celebrity endorsements for example. You know, in a way it is a good thing that Fratelli Rossetti shoes aren’t easy to find, because it’s a discerning customer that will find and wear our shoes. We have three points of sale in the GCC in total, but this is our first boutique in Kuwait, and we’re very happy to be here! Of the new collection available in Kuwait, which is your favorite shoe and why? The loafer with tassels: The Brera (which is named after

a street in Italy)! Our father was the first to ever import these tassels from the United States. In the 1970s, we gave the shoes to the Milanese soccer team but they refused to wear them since, to them, the shoes were too frivolous. But Gianni Rivera, the team’s most important player and Golden Ball winner of the time, gladly wore the Brera. He was referred to as the ‘Golden Boy,’ because he was so trendy and was the first team member to wear this shoe. The Brera then became famous and it has become our icon, and every season we change a slight detail to it. This is why the Brera is my favorite of the collection here.

Fratelli Rosseti is located on the ground floor of the Arraya Center. For more information, please call 2299 7672.

BLOOMINGDALE’S KUWAIT Luxury shopping at its finest By bazaar staff

Bloomingdale’s, a name that’s synonymous with a refined shopping experience that exudes luxury and exclusivity, has opened its doors to the Kuwaiti market at 360 Mall. We sat with Bloomingdale’s Kuwait’s General Manager, Tina Sharp, to learn more about the store’s offerings and the inimitability that is the Bloomingdale’s shopping experience. Following the success of the Bloomingdale’s Dubai store, opening a Kuwait location seemed to be the logical step when they decided to build on the franchising expansion. “The Kuwaiti customer is a sophisticated one,” Tina explained, “so opening the second store outside the US in Kuwait was the natural choice.” As opposed to flying out to Dubai to indulge in a remarkable shopping experience, we now have Bloomingdale’s here with superbly unique additions! Tina also added, “Kuwait is a limitless market that allows us realize dreams and create anything no matter how impossible it may seem.” Focusing on the experience as a whole, the store and its design have been in mind for years. With that, every part of the store has been designed to bring something superbly unique to the Kuwaiti client. Listening to their Amber Loyalty Card customers’ feedback, the good people behind Bloomingdale’s Kuwait are able to provide them with the services and products they crave. “We’ve worked tirelessly to create an environment in which the customer would want to come in to,” Tina stated, “and we’re open in 360 Mall because it’s a beautiful mall surrounded by luxury and Bloomingdale’s simply wants to be a part of that.” But what sets Bloomingdale’s Kuwait apart from other department stores? The exclusive experiences throughout the store and the brand collections, of course! The Bloomingdale’s Kuwait buyers worked hard at gathering intel and bringing in brands that are aren’t readily available to the customers here, but are still established enough. The collections at Bloomingdale’s Kuwait are carefully curated to appeal to the Kuwaiti customer. “The Kuwaiti customer is an international customer that shops in London, Paris and New York – so stepping into Bloomingdale’s Kuwait should make them feel different while still maintaining the Bloomingdale’s identity,” Tina smiled. Still, what can Bloomingdale’s Kuwait offer that is so different? For starters, they’ve added a personalization which is exclusive to the Kuwaiti store: “It allows the customers to not only purchase an amazing item from one of the fabulous brands available, but they can also make it very unique and personal to themselves or a loved one.” They’ve also created the 84

Tina Sharp 'Experience Beauty' lounge in their dedicated beauty department which offers treatments and equipment exclusively available to the Kuwaiti clientele and not found in any other store. From specialized skin analysis stations to devoted makeup artists, the beauty department is at your service. There’s also an exclusive restaurant concept called 'The Scene' which is not only exclusive to Bloomingdale’s Kuwait, but is entirely original as well. Lounging areas have been set up purposefully across the store to give customers the opportunity to relax and spend as much time as they’d like. “Customers can just come in, grab a seat and watch the world go by or just browse without feeling the need to leave,” Tina added, “Refreshments are also available to the customers on each of the floors to give them a sense of ease to spend the afternoon here comfortably.” Understanding that the Kuwaiti customer is supremely fashion savvy, Bloomingdale’s Kuwait aims to be just as up-todate with the trends and must-have products as their clientele. And not only are they providing a platform for internationally renowned designers and brands, Bloomingdale’s Kuwait is also supporting the local fashion scene. “We’ve created a space

to showcase the local fashion designers we have available in-store as well,” Tina explained. And because we just had to know what her favorite part of the store was: “The footwear department – and the 'Experience Beauty' lounge for all their wonderful techniques and products. But if I’m looking at product, then it would be footwear – and then beauty, and ready-to-wear,” she laughed, “I’m a girl and it’s very hard for me to choose!” As someone who has shopped there personally, she hopes that the space is welcoming to all and pleasurable to navigate for all their customers. “We’re happy to be open and I’m excited to hear what the customer thinks of their store – because it’s essentially their store. We absolutely welcome feedback to help us improve and to provide the customer with a better experience. That’s what we’re here for, to provide a pleasant experience.”

Shop exclusive brands and benefit from the unique shopper experiences at Bloomingdale’s Kuwait – located at 360 Mall. For more information, please call 2229 9800, and you can follow them on Instagram @BloomingdalesME.

SAVANNA

Welcome to the urban, stylish jungle for the little ones! By bazaar staff

Retail destinations are aplenty here in Kuwait, but sometimes we find ourselves in need of something a little extra sending us on an online shopping spree. While the malls host many-an-option for high-street and high-end brands alike, there’s a slight gap when it comes to the mid-ranged shops. Always ahead of the trend, That Al Salasil decided to create a concept store that gives shoppers of every budget a run for their money. Specializing in childrenswear and accessories, Savanna is the destination for all the stylish tots out there. Let the children roam free in the cool child-friendly aesthetics of the shops as you pick and choose their next outfit or two. Committed to bringing in what’s hot and trendy for the season, Savanna has a list of English, Italian and French brands that are constants at the boutique. From Paul Smith Junior’s eccentric color combinations for sleep and playtime and Il Gufo's preppy styles, to I Pinco Pallino’s and Simonetta's formal attire – there’s something for every occasion. Still, the fun doesn’t end there. The brands available at Savanna have taken the shopping experience to a whole new level with their popping graphic prints and child-friendly designs – even I wanted in on all the fun! The shop itself is set up to appeal to both parents and children alike. Every corner is filled with goodies for the parents to browse through with their little ones, and the children can be entertained by the animals all around. Snap a photo of your tot with one of the animal busts hanging on the walls: The cheeky monkey, the elegant lion or the friendly elephant are all beautiful options. Let them be entertained by the animal statues of the effortlessly cool king of the jungle, the speedy ostrich or the purple rhino and help them develop a narrative for each one. Want to get them to try on some shoes or sit quietly for a couple of minutes? Savanna has thought of that too by including little animal stools for the children to sit on and indulge in a game or two on the iPads set up around the shop. Or simply let them enjoy a game of pretend as they enter the safari tent in the middle of the 86

AUDI A5 WHEN SPORTY ELEGANCE MEETS IMPECCABLE DESIGN By bazaar staff

Revolutionizing its mid-size class in 2007 with the creation of the bespoke A5, German carmaker Audi has been enchanting fans ever since. Considered as the preferred vehicle of choice for both sports and leisure drivers, the launch of the new second generation of the A5 marks a fresh, honed look and high tech capabilities. When we were asked to test-drive the A5, renowned for its athletic, sporty elegance, we jumped at the opportunity and immediately jetted off to the city to take this beauty out for a spin! From the Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre in Shuwaikh to the luxurious Al-Hamra Tower, the A5 CoupĂŠ stunned and impressed. 88

The new generation of the A5 is athletic, sporty and elegant. Under the skin the A5 impresses with an all-new chassis, powerful engines, and innovative infotainment features and driver assistance systems. We also learned that the new model comes with a four-cylinder 190 hp engine for the Audi A5 Coupé 40 TFSI and with a six-cylinder engine 354 hp for the Audi S5 Coupé. True to its DNA, we experienced the sporty and elegant character of the new version in every aspect of our ride. Decked out to the max, we fell in love with the stunning little details that make the A5 remarkably stand out from the crowd. The best example is the wave-shaped shoulder line that characterized the previous model. The precisely sweeping line with pronounced bulges over the wheel arches emphasizes all four wheels – a cue to the quattro all-wheel drive that effortlessly makes you feel that you’re gliding on the open road. Our tour around the city did not go unnoticed; people simply stopped to admire the pristine, pearly white sleek exterior of the car. Given that the sun had just risen, beautifully reflecting its rays on the spectacular Audi. The perfectly balanced proportions with a long engine hood, the stretched wheelbase and short overhangs underscore the sportiness of the new A5 Coupé. The sculpted Singleframe grille is significantly flatter and wider than in the previous model. The LED rear lights and LED headlights with dynamic turn signals make highend technology visible even after dark. The new Audi A5 Coupé is available in Kuwait with the 40 TFSI 190HP engine. Compared with the previous model, it offers up to 17 percent more performance while consuming as much as 22 percent less fuel. The engine combines high efficiency with sporty power development and smooth running. Drivetrain The new Audi A5 Coupé comes with a drivetrain solution tailor-made for each engine variant. The seven-speed S tronic is used with the fourcylinder engines in the A5. The eight-speed tiptronic is reserved for the S5 V6 engine that comes standard with quattro all-wheel drive. Audi also offers the optional rear-axle sport differential for even more dynamic driving and precision. Chassis The all-new chassis is simply one of the many strengths exhibited by the Audi A5 Coupé. It offers the driver optimal comfort combined with a high degree of agility. The A5 handles long trips with so much ease, even if you’re driving all out to the Chalets in Bnaider. To make your trip more comfortable, Audi utilizes a suspension with damper control as an option. This is integrated into the dynamic handling system known as Audi drive select, which enables the driver to modify the basic characteristic in multiple steps. The electromechanical power steering is also a new development from Audi. It adapts according to [Continued...]

the vehicle’s current speed and provides highly precise road feedback. Optionally available is the dynamic steering, which varies its gear ratio depending on the speed and steering angle. Body The Audi A5 CoupÊ is significantly more efficient than its predecessor. This is due in large part to a reduction in weight as well as sophisticated aerodynamics, and we immediately noticed that once we took the car out on the open road. Because the engineers were able to trim the curb weight by as much as 60 kilograms, the body is the lightest in the competitive field thanks to an intelligent mix of materials and lightweight design. With a drag coefficient of 0.25, the A5 CoupÊ is also the segment leader with respect to aerodynamics. Interior The interior benefits from the increased dimensions and longer wheelbase. Space for driver and passengers is more generous. The horizontal architecture of the instrument panel and the continuous air vent strip create a wide sense of space. As is typical for Audi, interior build quality is uncompromisingly high. High-quality materials in a wide range of colors provide for a particularly pleasant ambiance and underscore the premium character of the mid-sized model. Optional ambient lighting highlights the interior with a choice of 30 adjustable shades. The new 90

A5 Coupé also redefines the class benchmark for aeroacoustics. The acoustic comfort is almost that of a luxury class model. Display and controls and Infotainment The A5 Coupé is now available for the first time with the optional Audi virtual cockpit, a 12.3-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1,440 x 540 pixels. Together with the MMI navigation plus including 8.3-inch monitor on the center console, it forms the central information unit. The focal point of the MMI terminal is the round rotary pushbutton. Its surface is home to the touch-sensitive touchpad. The touchpad is used to input characters and for multi-finger gestures, such as allowing the driver to zoom in on the map, or change controls seamlessly. The whole MMI control logic is similar to that of a smartphone, including the intelligent free text search function. The new, more natural voice control system can recognize input made using everyday language, so you’re never distracted from enjoying your drive! The optional MMI navigation plus will include the Audi smartphone interface. Apple Car Play will bring the familiar smartphone environment to the

car, if desired. For discerning hi-fi fans, the Bang & Olufsen sound system with its innovative 3D sound is available as an option. We plugged in our music, and simply let the terrific sound system do its thing! Driver assistance systems An intelligent combination of different technologies enhances the safety, comfort and efficiency of the new Audi A5 Coupé. At the same time, Audi is also taking the next step toward piloted driving. The broad choice of innovative driver assistance systems sets standards in the segment. Compared with the previous model, nearly all of the systems are either completely new or have been extensively updated. Audi active lane assist helps keep the car on track in the driving lane. New and important safety features include the park assist, cross traffic assist rear, exit warning, collision avoidance assist and turn assist as well as the Audi pre sense systems. Compared with the previous model, the list of standard equipment is even more generous. Among the features included are LED headlights and LED rear lights, LED interior lights, the Audi

MMI radio plus with 7-inch MMI color display, Bluetooth and USB charging function, the threespoke multifunction steering wheel (including shift paddles), height-adjustable belt feeds and the Audi drive select dynamic handling system. New trim lines provide numerous customization opportunities, for both the interior and the exterior. Besides the base model, there are also the sport and design lines. The S line sport package and the Audi design selection are available for sophisticated customization, particularly for the interior. Audi offers the S line exterior package for a particularly dynamic appearance.

The new Audi A5 and S5 Coupé are now available at the Audi Kuwait showroom represented by Fouad Alghanim & Sons Automotive Company located in Shuwaikh Industrial Area, Street Nr 11, Block Nr 11, Building Nr 56A. ARE WE RUINING THE FUN?

Snapchat’s young users are at once its greatest asset and one of its biggest risks By Tracey Lien and Samantha Masunaga

Kids don’t use email any more. Facebook is for Mom and Dad, and Yik Yak is so 2015. When it comes to communication in 2017, Snapchat is where it’s at. Snap Inc.’s ability to court a young demographic with its ephemeral photo and video messaging app Snapchat has been one of its defining characteristics and the pillar of its success. But as the company prepares for its stock market debut, its reliance on users under the age of 25 could also be one of its biggest liabilities. “It’s the rocks many ships have crashed on,” said Erik Gordon, a professor at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, who has studied companies that staked their success on the loyalty of young customers. “Think of all the teen retailers that were fabulously successful five to 10 years ago that are now in terrible shape. Look at Abercrombie and Fitch,” Gordon said. “(Young people) are not as loyal as they move on. As they start to get older, they don’t want to do what they did as kids.” And Snap Inc. knows this. In its S-1 — a form that companies planning to go public file with the SEC — the company pinpointed as a risk the fact that the majority of its users are between 18 and 34 years old, 92

a demographic that “may be less brand loyal and more likely to follow trends than other demographics.” Worse, Snapchat usage appears to taper with age. Users younger than 25 opened the app more than 20 times a day and spent more than 30 minutes viewing photos and video. Users older than 25 visited Snapchat about 12 times a day and spent a total of 20 minutes in the app. Whether the company succeeds in the long term or falls on the sword of youthful disloyalty will depend on whether it is touched by the “age effect” or the “cohort effect,” Gordon said. In the former, broad swaths of Snapchat users would lose interest when they reach a certain age. “It would be like cheap pizza,” Gordon said. “I live in a college town, and the best-selling pizzas are cheap. But when these students graduate and they have income, they switch. They’re no longer eating what’s on special.” The latter — and more desirable of the two — is the cohort effect, in which people stick with a product or service they’ve grown up with because it has become a habit. “Each cohort and generation chooses what works for them, and then they stick with it,” said Chi-Hua Chien, a partner at Goodwater Capital who led early investments in Facebook and Twitter. “People in their 40s use email, people in their 30s use text and Facebook, people in their 20s use Snapchat. People

in their 40s aren’t going to suddenly start abandoning email because something else has come along.” And that’s what Snap Inc is banking on. Its S-1 is littered with references to “retention, growth, and engagement” — a sign that it understands the need to hang on to today’s teens and millennials if it doesn’t want to go the way of other flash-in-the pan apps. But even just hanging onto its current audience could be risky, said Adam Brasel, associate professor and chairman of Boston College’s marketing department. He said Snapchat faces a similar risk to many social networks: its mass popularity with current millennials might work against it in the next generation, much like how Facebook is not as popular with teens. “To some degree, Snapchat is so popular right now with millennials that as millennials age, the generation that’s coming up behind (them) may view Snapchat as not for them,” Brasel said. “If it truly becomes this generational thing, they run this risk of being tied to the generation, rather than the age group. And that can be very risky.” Snapchat’s popularity has already evolved from its initial appeal as a way to send disappearing messages. It now captivates users with a plethora of filters for photos and videos, and exclusive articles published by a select group of media companies. The trick, Brasel says, is to figure out what the next hook will be.

LIFE WITH CACAO

Where chocolate is not just an ingredient, it’s a lifestyle By bazaar staff

A leisurely stroll through The Gardens at 360 Mall is never complete without an indulgent session at Life with Cacao. Now clad in a whimsical new look, the beautiful lounge for all things dessert seamlessly brings more life to the luxurious shopping destination in Kuwait. Admire the living wall of greenery, and enjoy the sunshine flooding in through the mall’s glass façade at Life with Cacao. Whether you choose to sit inside the cozy interior space, or you’d rather bask in the calm exterior sanctuary set next to the Japanese Koi pond, rest assured that your experience at Life with Cacao will leave you appreciating those fine, little details that make life better. Hint: 94

These details usually involve a healthy dose of chocolate, and at Life with Cacao, the culinary experts at this establishment want you to 'Live Deliciously.' Life with Cacao’s new look emanates with chic. From the fabulous dark, wooden parquet floors that are successfully juxtaposed with monochromatic marble features, to the industrially themed lamps styled next to the regal chandelier that commands your attention as you're walking by. French-inspired salon armchairs, luxurious sofas, and antique dresser benches make every corner worth total admiration. We immediately fell in love, especially with the vintage, wooden panels adorning the walls, artfully housing decorative birdcages. We also couldn’t help but notice the

towering shelves filled with books to the brim. At first, we thought the books were merely decorative. Closer examination revealed, however that the staggering collection of aged books were real. Think Shakespeare’s classics in German, an illustrated edition of Robinson Crusoe, Little Women and so many more! We know we’ll quickly return to this special little reading nook at Life with Cacao, to not only let our eyes devour the book collection on display, but to also further explore the brand’s visionary dessert offerings. Understanding the Life with Cacao lifestyle is easy, you simply have to allow the space and inspired menu to immerse your taste buds with their delectable flavor profiles. Falling in love with chocolate is never hard, as it all depends on the quality of the ingredients

used. At this establishment, the commitment to sourcing the finest chocolates can be experienced throughout their vast offerings. Since the local development of this concept seven years ago, they’ve recently revamped the look of the space as well as their menu, with 25 new offerings that include incredible desserts, savory bites and dazzling drinks. Our eyes lingered across the menu’s beautiful pages, and while we were so tempted to start our morning with Fondue for Two (because, why not?), we opted to try the S’mores Croissant. Our minds were piqued by the uniquely round-shaped croissant that was generously filled with Life with Cacao’s homemade hazelnut spread, hazelnut chunks, melted marshmallows, generously drizzled with a salted caramel sauce, and served with Vanilla ice cream. The flavors worked together perfectly, as the freshness of the ice cream that was delightfully not too sweet, cut through the richness of this offering. Another show stopping signature dessert to try is the Cacao Surprise. Guaranteed to delight all of your senses, this dessert arrives as a tempered chocolate dome, filled with mango cake, mango ice cream, and is served with hot white chocolate sauce that reveals the fruity surprise that lies within. The dessert menu also displayed an array of puddings that left us quite speechless, such as the Peanut Butter Chocolate Pudding, a soft cake filled with peanut butter topped with chocolate ice cream, caramel, chocolate sauce, toffee chunks and caramelized peanuts. We also loved how cakes are presented at Life with Cacao. Artfully layered in beautiful mason jars, options like the Golden Cheesecake or the Hazelnut Cake will leave your taste buds singing for more. Breakfast options are also available at this establishment, from a classic American offering, French Toast (Bonus tip: try the Cacao French Toast that mixes both dark and milk chocolate sauces with vanilla ice cream) Pancakes, to Eggs Benedict and their Brioche Egg Sandwich. However, we gave in to sweet sensations, and ordered the Caramel Crêpe stuffed with salted caramel sauce, and topped with cubed toffee pieces, and chocolate rounds, as well as Red Velvet pancakes drizzled in a gorgeous chocolate sauce with fresh strawberries. To break the rotation of sweets coming to our table, we decided on a simple savory interlude—the Butternut Salad. With roasted pumpkin, mixed greens, onions, peanuts and zingy orange zest and served with a butternut sauce, the salad was a light and refreshing bite. We also noticed that you can get creative with savory waffles at Life with Cacao, or you can choose from a variety of sandwiches and pastas to break that sweet cycle.

After our savory excursion, our palates once again craved something sweet. Which is why we chose a jaw dropping shake—yes that’s the reaction we had when we saw the Pistachio Shake. Pistachio ice cream, chocolate ice cream, fresh cream, dark chocolate sauce, chunks of pistachio and meringue. Our taste buds were riveted, from the smoothness of the ice cream to the crunchiness of the nuts and meringue peices. We ended our opulent morning with copious amounts of tea and hot chocolate, and we

invite you to visit this dazzling establishment to experience the cacao lifestyle. Trust us, you won’t regret it! Life with Cacao is located in 360 Mall (2530 9909), Grand Avenue-The Avenues (2220 0762), The M2, Salhiya Complex (2299 6970), West Mishref (2539 5415) and The Promenade Mall in Hawally (2225 6415). NOT THE REVIEW YOU WERE EXPECTING By bazaar staff

Yes, I know, this month’s review should have been Zelda: Breath of the Wild. But that isn’t happening here for 2 reasons. 1-The game is too huge, and between travel and moving house, I wasn’t able to play it for a decent enough amount of time to warrant a fair review and 2-there’s nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said on the 10,000 other, bigger reviews! But ok, look, my one paragraph review: BUY IT. It’s a 10/10 must-own and as you’d expect from Nintendo/Zelda, doesn’t disappoint at all. I’d personally advise getting it for the Wii U and not investing in a Switch just yet, due to the various launch technical issues, availability and price in Kuwait, and a very small game library. There’s barely any difference between the two versions anyway. Instead, this month, we will take a look at a game that was also released recently, is equally as much of a masterpiece, but sadly got overlooked due to the release and media bandwagon coverage of Zelda. With Mass Effect: Andromeda out now too, this brand new IP has been unfortunately sandwiched in between 2 blockbuster franchises, and I wish that it had been scheduled better in order to stand out and get the proper attention and appreciation it deserves. Horizon Zero Dawn has been eagerly awaited by PS4 players since it was announced and shown off a couple of years ago. I could never remember its name for some reason, so I’d always refer to it as ‘that robot dinosaur game’. It’s still ‘that robot dinosaur game’ to me but it’s also a whole bunch more. The game is set in the far future, with humanity having mastered holographic and robotic technologies. After an unexplained catastrophe destroys humanity, the machines dominate the planet. Horizon follows the story of Aloy, from girl to woman, who has been deemed an outcast by her tribe and sets out to learn more about her history as well as the machines. The game could be seen as a mash up of other big titles, including Uncharted, Gears Of War and most notably, Tomb Raider. Aloy moves exactly like Lara Croft, and that extends to climbing and battling, especially when it comes to using the bow and arrow. The crafting system also seems to have been heavily inspired by Tomb Raider, not to mention the campfire save points. This isn’t a bad thing at all, and I don’t consider it a blatant copy/ paste since Horizon combines these things along with many others of its own. They just took the best mechanics from the best games in order to create the perfect package. 96

There is so much to do and see in Horizon, with it being an open world environment you can pretty much do what you like in any order (after passing the game intro which naturally serves as a tutorial). You have the main story, as well as side missions, which come in at around 30-40 hours of gameplay. There is much to explore and a massive area but feat not; you can obtain means to traverse the map a little later into the game. Now, about those ‘robot dinosaurs’ (aka the machines). You’ll encounter many of them, especially the smaller types that serve as the main enemy type. These alone are awesome to see and eventually kill, made all the more satisfying in that you can loot them (as you can all of the machines) once beaten. Later in the game you’ll encounter bigger and tougher machines which look amazing and leave you feeling genuinely nervous, but the sense of accomplishment when you take one down will have you ready for the next gargantuan to destroy! Enemies come in human and robot form

and are nicely varied that you don’t get bored of seeing the same foe during every battle. You have the usual open world tactics of assault and stealth approaches when it comes to enemies, and both work extremely well with equal rewards no matter which you chose. The crafting system is thorough, allowing you to create/upgrade weapons, ammo, potions and more. You’ll find many crafting materials in the environment, as well as when looting beaten enemies, and you can even craft ammo on the go which you’ll definitely require! While the game isn’t unusually hard, you’ll find death common while playing. For me, I didn’t get annoyed by this; after all, when you’re fighting huge metallic machines, what do you expect!? If anything, I found dying and restarting a great chance to reevaluate the approach to the battle and adjust it. If you want an in-depth adventure game, with plenty of game time that isn’t Zelda, this is the one. But regardless of Zelda, or adventure games or anything, do check this one out. You’ll be pleasantly pleased.

ORANGETHEORY FITNESS Zoning in on your best self

By bazaar staff

“Strap on a heart monitor and keep it at orange” sounds pretty simple when compared to all the overwhelming technical jargon you can get in the exercise industry. This is the formula of the one-hour Orangetheory Fitness exercise program. They have done all the research so you don’t have to, and use a combination of High Intensity Interval Training and Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption theories. You can burn 5001000 calories in one workout, and keep burning when you’re done! For someone who hadn’t set foot inside a gym for years, this seemed like the option for me and I couldn’t wait to try it! The first ever ladies-only Orangetheory fitness studio in Kuwait is located on the first floor of Symphony Mall in Salmiya. Brought to you by Khaled Jafar, the latest fitness class to hit Kuwait can have the longest lasting effects of any other 60-minute workout out there. The theory is that there are different zones for your heart rate 98

where the body works its hardest to burn fat, burn calories, and to deliver the optimum workout to induce calorie afterburn or EPOC, for up to 36 hours. It’s no wonder then, that Orange60 has been voted the best one hour workout in the USA by both Men’s Journal and the New York Times. Research suggests that a one minute, intense, all-out workout has the same endurance, muscle function and insulin resistance benefits as a 45-minute continuous workout at the same pace. All Orangetheory workouts are intervalbased using a base pace, push pace or allout pace effort. There are three blocks to use to achieve this: treadmill, rowing and weight training. Cardiologists say that afterburn occurs when our bodies require excess oxygen after a workout in order to return ourselves to our normal functioning state. Orangetheory identifies afterburn potential with splat points. A minimum of 12 splat points is required to push the body into EPOC. I loved the awesome encouragement from the instructors to keep going, especially that I felt extremely exerted as I hadn’t worked out in some time! The fact that I ended up with 39 splat points on my first ever go was the amazing assurance that I needed: I hit the afterburn zone and burned nearly 700 calories during the classimpressive!

To ensure that your heart rate remains at an ideal pace, Orangetheory applies a color to each of the 5 heartrate zones, which makes it simple to identify and map your progress. Green, Orange and Red are the colors you want to see when you quickly glance at a screen to see how hard you would need to push yourself, or to even relax a little! The helpful staff at the studio reception provided me with a heart rate monitor, which you strap to your chest under your sports bra, or you can try the wrist band monitor. If you don’t like shared devices, both devices are available for immediate purchase. Also available in the reception area is everything you need to make your workout more comfortable. There are easy-sip water bottles perfect for hydrating yourself when running on the treadmill, breathable leggings, lightweight T-shirts, gym bags, and if you forget yours they have cute Orangetheory trainer socks too! As I moved through from the reception area into the pre-workout foyer, I could see a number of compact facilities available for use. The amenities include both changing and wash rooms, showers, a beauty station complete with blow-dryer (perfect for my after workout meetings!), hand towels and a number of lockers to store personal belongings safely for the next 60 minutes.

Once in the workout areas I could see the screens placed up high on the walls where you can see your heart monitor in action displayed along with your name. The mirrored walls always allow you to see at least one result screen at all times, no matter which section of the gym that you are in. The display shows in real time your percentage effort, your zone color, how many splat points you’re earning, the number of calories you’re burning and your heart rate. Regardless of your fitness level, each person can complete the designed workout programs, and the weight training routine part of the class changes every day, so you're always challenged! The classes contain high energy workouts and Orangetheory categorizes cardio ability into power walker and jogger/runner fitness levels. You can push yourself through a choice of incline or speed on the latest machines available to strategically achieve the goal percentage effort zones for optimum results. I was certainly happy that my instructor correctly placed me in the Power Walker category, I wouldn’t have made it through the workout otherwise! When monitoring my heart rate, I swayed between the orange and red zones, and that’s an indicator for me to get back to the green zone for greater fat-burning. Learning to regulate my breathing and not over exert myself, taking the time to understand the control that I have to choose how I benefit from Orange60 was really enlightening and has made me want to participate even more in these exercise classes. To measure long-term progress, Orangetheory uses the InBody system which measures your entire body muscle and fat content and where the problem areas are. Using a percentage system with indicators of low, normal and over, the printed fullpage body analysis results allow you to decide how to train for the changes you want to see and my results were clearly explained to me by my instructor. A neat little add on which I found so easy to use is the QR code on the InBody results sheet which accesses a website with more detailed information on what each of the InBody sections mean. Not minutes after my Orange60 class ended, a workout stats email arrived in my inbox detailing effort, calories burned, splat points earned and average heart rate reached. Accumulative workout stats are also given for the week, month and year. The numbers really start to add up, which is highly motivational! I quickly signed up for a month long membership and I can’t wait to see how my results develop. The Orangetheory app keeps all your workout results and means easy booking for either a specific class or block bookings where you choose start and end dates. This seems to be a general theme for Orangetheory. Get organized, be motivated, keep burning!

THE DREAMS THAT YOU DREAM

Finally getting to try JOA By bazaar staff

This month’s Eats In is so very close to this writer’s heart. Each month, when the hunger strikes, we as a team put our tummies together to discuss what deliciousness we’re going to order in for lunchtime to share, photograph and write about. Dear readers, Eats In has been going on for almost a year now, and since JOA’s release on a certain delivery app last July, I’ve been trying to get the team to agree on a review month after month, as I am a resident sushi-enthusiast. Now, the collective reluctance has nothing to do with JOA as a concept, it’s just about timing; it never ends up working out. But this month, one bazaarite’s (namely, me) wish came true, with a scroll of a menu and a few taps on the smartphone. It’s unusual to say that Christmas would come in the beginning of Spring, but while ordering from JOA, I certainly felt that way. On this day, the office was fairly empty, but a couple of us were overjoyed to feed our hunger and cravings with ORA’s fresh sister concept, in the form of JOA’s poke bowls, which come vast in variety with choices between seafood and beef. For those of you who don’t know: poke bowls are an actual gift from heaven, and are an extremely sophisticated form of deconstructed sushi packed into a bowl. 100

In a poke bowl, you get your sushi rice, protein of choice, another couple of cheeky ingredients like edamame or crispies, pickled ginger, or other creative veggies and components to make the bowl burst with flavor. I opted for the Simply Salmon: a bowl containing marinated, sashimi grade salmon, sushi rice, avocado, green beans, edamame, spring onion, sesame, pickled ginger and a glorious spicy sweet soy sauce. The meatbased poke was whimsically named “Let’s Get Serious”, as perhaps a nod to the searing of the steak in pan-fried fashion. This beauty, the turf to my surf, was ordered by my colleague who had tried this bowl on previous occasions and swears by it. Consisting of Angus beef, poached shrimp, wild rice, edamame, avocado, spring onion, marinated mushrooms, sesame seeds, crispy garlic and JOA’s signature spicy honey mayo sauce. Coupled with an order of Tuna Chili rolls, a Spiced Honey Shrimp appetizer, and a Seaweed and Crispy Kale salad for added fun, we were up to our ears with excitement as we processed our orders and pretended to work as we waited for it to make its way to us. As soon as the food arrived, we could hardly contain our excitement and laid the containers out neatly on the communal table before digging in. Let us start out by saying that JOA’s sushi is of the freshest we’ve ever had in regards to deliverability. Not only is it beautifully vibrant in presentation, with the tuna’s impressive magenta hue, but also its fresh chili garnish breaks the simplicity with innovation. And guess what? It wasn’t even that spicy! It had just enough spice to let the average spice lover sacrifice the compulsory wad of wasabi traditionally served with the dish.

The Spicy Honey Shrimp was crispy to perfection and resulted in a bite-sized tempura based appetizer. Paired with their Spicy Honey mayo, a dressing not different to that of the Let’s Get Serious, the combination was sublime and indeed appetite whetting. And of course, we had to tuck into bites of our health-conscious colleague’s gloriously green Seaweed and Crispy Kale salad, its taste of cucumber and roughage left us excited for days to come, where we will soon be lounging on the beach. But those poke bowls – man, where can I start? My colleague knew what to expect with the Let’s Get Serious, which is why she apparently always orders it, but that Simply Salmon – I was blown away. I think it’s safe to say that this fresh, yet hearty meal is my new favorite thing on the planet, and a personal goal of mine is to try each different poke bowl offered on JOA’s menu after this experience. Once I cleaned out my poke bowl, I felt a wave of sadness, yet extreme satisfaction. This was by far one of my favorite Eats In experiences, and as I happily realized that I could perfectly conclude my with a steaming hot cup of tea made with the Matcha I keep in the office, I knew surely that JOA was worth the wait.

JOA is now open in Darwazat Abdul Razak on Mubarak Al Kabeer Street, Jibla. JOA is also available on Carriage for delivery, and you can also follow them on Instagram @joa.kw.

CAMARADA 3D CAMERA

Camarada 3D Camera is an app that lets you record 3D video. It features three modes. The first is a single-user mode that lets you capture 2D videos and then renders them to be VR. The second lets you use two smartphones linked together to shoot stereoscopic 3D videos. Unfortunately, the third mode is still in progress. However, it should eventually let you use three or more phones to produce panoramic, 360-degree video. It's a free app so there's no harm in trying it out. That's even if it still needs a little bit of work.

CORE

Core is a streaming app that's aimed at gamers. It allows you to watch live game streams from a number of services. The idea is that it's supposed to help you discover new games, watch players you like, and do it all under one roof. It doesn't support every live streaming platform. However, it does stream enough of them to be handy for fans of the genre. The interface works well although it can be cluttered at times. There are also news shows and more content aside from live game streaming. It's worth a shot if you're into that sort of thing.

FACEAPP

FaceApp is a fun little camera app with some unique filters. You take a selfie and then you can make yourself smile, look older, look younger, or even look like a different sex. The adventurous can make a collage with a few of the filters applied at once. Some have had issues with individual filters, but it's an entertainment app and it doesn't please everyone. To be perfectly honest, this is app you'll likely enjoy playing with for a couple of weeks before uninstalling. However, it'll make for some good Instagram photos. The app is free to download.

FENDER GUITAR TUNER

Fender released their first official app in February. As it turns out, it's a guitar tuner app. Thankfully, it's also pretty good. It sports an easy-to-use interface that anyone should be able to figure out. The app also features 22 different tune settings including Drop D, Drop C, DADGAD, and others. You can also tune manually instead of automatically if you prefer doing it by ear. There are even beginner's tips for new learners and it works with multiple instruments. It's completely free to download with no ads or inapp purchases.

INKITT

Inkitt is an e-reader app where you can find a lot of content. It features a variety of books and other content from independent writers who don't mind giving away their stuff for free. Once you find what you like, you can download the books and read them right from the app. You'll also be able to change the color of the pages, engage a night mode, and there is an auto-scrolling feature for easier reading. It's not the most elaborate ereader ever, but it does have a ton of free stuff for you to read. It's worth checking out.

LEGO LIFE

LEGO Life is a community application for LEGO enthusiasts. The point of the app is to show off your creations, view the creations of others, and engage with fellow fans of LEGOs. The app features build challenges, quizzes about various games and properties, and there is even video content that you can watch. It's aimed at children as young as five although the company recommends slightly older children use it. The only downside is that the app still has some bugs that it needs to iron out. Luckily, it's completely free so you can get it now or later after those bugs get fixed.

JAR

The contemporary dining concept revisited By bazaar staff

When it comes to their creative concoctions and delicious flavor combinations, Jar continues to reign supreme. An entirely local concept – even the chef’s Kuwaiti! – Jar’s creations are both visually and sensory pleasing. With Jar's two locations’ décor lending to the food’s presentation, we were ready to consume everything that came our way. On weekends, between 9 a.m. and noon, you can enjoy Jar’s very own take on breakfast, that vary from the classics to their very own renditions of the Shakshouka and Soufflé Pancakes. But since we were there for dinner, we had to keep our eyes on the prize – and it was glorious. As you walk in, you’re quickly ushered to the seat of your choice and presented with their complimentary pumpkin chips and dip. Praise and poetry can be written and recited about this simple welcome plate, as the crunch and sweetness of the chips were beautifully balanced by the tartness of the dip. Making every sauce, dip and marinade in-house and from scratch, we knew we were in for a treat after we sampled that yummy, yummy dip. To start off, we ordered a selection of salads and appetizers. Since we couldn’t decide on one salad, we ended up ordering both the Pumpkin Salad and Crispy Salad. Gorgeously layered, both salads arrived as towers of deliciousness that were instantly destroyed by our forks. The Crispy Salad offered layer upon layer of crunchy cabbage, crisp mixed greens and fried corn kernels finished with a sprinkling of cashew nuts. Then, the appetizers started rolling in. The Grilled Edamame with the fried Brussel sprouts and green apple ponzu was refreshingly palatable. The star of the show was most definitely their Coffee Glazed Ribs. Served with a side of Asian potato chips and an invigorating mint and celery salad, the ribs themselves needed no knife to cut through them. Easily flaking under the pressure of a fork, the ribs were fantastically marinated and truly delightful. As we enjoyed our last bites of the ribs, the mains made their way to our table. The mains came in the form of two pizzas, a burger and pasta. A deliciously baked Mushroom Pizza and classic Margherita made for incredible sharing dishes alongside our burger and pasta. Our Burrata Burger offered the perfect fusion of fresh burrata cheese, red grape reduction on top of a juicy burger patty, 104

and the flavors married perfectly. As for the pasta dish, we went with the Baked Pink Pasta with the addition of tender chicken breast bites. With food this great, we couldn’t wait to see what they did with dessert. For dessert, we opted for the Ultimate S’more, which comes in the form of a cookie stuffed with your chocolate of choice (we chose kinder) and topped with torched homemade marshmallow. Runny, sticky and glorious,

the torched marshmallow was the perfect accompaniment to the chocolate-filled cookie. Needless to say, we ended our meal on a highnote and we cannot wait for our next visit to sample the rest of their offerings. Visit Jar at Murouj at Sahara (9722 5072) and at The Avenues – Grand Avenue – First Floor in the Galleria (9553 8718). Follow them on Instagram @Jar.Kuwait.

BREAKFAST IS SERVED

Trying out the best of eggs at Eggs By Ashley Alleluya

We were invited to the soft opening of the new breakfast place in town, Eggs, on a cloudy Friday morning. This got me pretty excited; there are very few breakfast dishes I've met and rejected, and eggs are very likeable. An egg is that friend you have who'll be the hit of any social group. You can dress her up with sauces and fillings or you can keep it simple around her – just some salt and pepper. No matter how they're prepared, they'll find a way to stand out. Eggs are the Emma Stone of food and we were eager to spend the morning trying out a host of Emmas. Eggs, conceived and owned by Rugayah Al-Humoud and Jenan Dashti, is located in the newly-fashionable section of Shuwaikh near Waves Center. Bright yellow exteriors with outdoor tables, Eggs is the comfortable yolk-colored bright spot in its alley. There are tables inside if that's what you prefer. With cozy interiors, Edison bulbs and a delightful coffee bar, Eggs gets it setting right by virtue of being highly Instagrammable. We fell in love with the seats outside that had little tray tables you could pull out from under the benches. I also loved the tall vases filled with eggs lining the counters, although it strangely made me want to throw one just for the splat-effect. Their menu, at least for now, is simple with no more than ten items, eggs and muffins featuring heavily in nearly all of them. It was a morning that demanded coffee and we asked for lots. It's a good roast, potent and rich, but with limited variations to choose from. Other drinks up for offer are tea, served black, green or with milk and fresh orange juice. We decided to order the Sunny Side Up Muffins, a Sausage Muffin, Crispy Halloumi sandwiches, a helping of the English Muffin French Toast and the house specialty, Crispy Benedict. Despite this just being a testing phase for Eggs with a steady stream of customers walking in, breakfast arrived fairly quickly. The food definitely passed the visual test – beautifully plated in square paper plates, their breakfast dishes are also easy to handle if you're taking your order to-go. The Sunny Side Up Muffins were a hit – loaded with three cheeses, the yolks were the right balance between runny and firm, paired together beautifully with their bread and disappeared from sight in less than two minutes! The Sausage Muffins were also well-received at the table and demolished in no time. The English Muffin French Toast were quite delicious – not too sweet, not heavy and definitely not greasy or soggy. They could have done with just a little more flavor, though – without the caramel sauce drizzled over the muffins, they were a touch on the bland side. We also assumed the muffins would come loaded with berries, but were given toast with a strawberry garnish. A few more juicy berries and this breakfast dish could easily become a menu favorite. 106

The Crispy Benedict was a real surprise to some at our table – "it is crisp!" one of my friends exclaimed, surprised by this variation. Another friend felt like the hollandaise sauce could be tweaked slightly to reach a velvety perfection. The Crispy Halloumi came with rocca and sun-dried tomato sauce, and while some enjoyed it thoroughly, others thought this was the weakest link in an otherwise solid menu. We learned that they'd be introducing some more items to the menu soon, with healthy raw food additions – a very smart move, considering the growing health craze around Kuwait. A huge plus for the Eggs team is the quality of service - friendly, efficient, informative and attentive. Their portions are not the monstrous plates of food we've come to expect in Kuwait. Their food is compactly plated and can be finished in a few quick yet filling bites. Eggs is also easy on the grease, so

when you're done, you're either ready to get up and move on with your day sample another one of their offerings. For the most part, Eggs makes a pretty strong first impression and is a place to visit for a quiet weekend breakfast or a quick bite. With a few minor tweaks to some dishes and a couple of additions to their food and drinks menu, Eggs could quickly become a very dependable and fail-safe option for breakfast in Kuwait – just like Emma. Eggs is located in Shuwaikh Market in Shuwaikh Industrial Area-1. For more information, please follow them on Instagram @eggskuwait. Originally published on www.Kingdome.co. MORE THAN JUST KABAB

Experiencing the new menu at Kababji’s Dine-In location By bazaar staff

When hunger strikes after spending a long, leisurely day shopping with a couple of friends, what do you crave? If it's home cooking but you're not quite ready to go home, saunter down the steps of Marina Mall's scenic courtyard facing Salem Al Mubarak Street to one of Kababji’s delicious dine-in restaurants! Walking into Kababji's Marina location is like walking into your home. It offers an air of nostalgia that only your favorite childhood Lebanese food eatery can give but in a modern, contemporary light. Split into two seating areas, indoor and outdoor, you’re automatically witnessing different patrons enjoying their food, argeeleh (shisha pipes) and each other’s company over plates filled with their Kababji favorites. A long breadmaking and grilling station adorns the front to display grills, mana’eesh, ka’ak, and the famous puffy Lebanese bread being made fresh and in person. It’s all such an exciting experience, and yet so familiar all at once. The environment surrounding the outdoor seating area only adds to the enjoyable experience at Kababji. Adorned with leaves surrounding the premises, whicker and linen accents make for a comfortable, earthy feel while dining. Rustic touches are added throughout, including our personal favorite detail: a decorative copper bicycle mounting a traditional Lebanese fire oven at the center of all the action. Imagine lounging in such a scenario while sipping on the freshest drinks that we ordered: lemonade with mint, and a detoxifying pomegranate lemonade. Refreshing and tranquil, we were so excited for the arrival of our perfectly curated spread of newer items on their menu. And then, like a tidal wave, it all started flowing: a creamy Hummus Beiruti, made with finely chopped parsley and a hint of pickles and mint; a plate of Eggplant Bekaa drizzled with Kababji’s special sauce, a satisfying Quinoa Tabbouleh and some heartwarming lentil soup from their new Soup of the Day section, served alongside crunchy bread – just like we do at home. Home was key to this entire meal, as it brought along feelings of nostalgia, comfort, family affairs and holidays, but with a more modern twist. This was especially shown when selections of hot mezze with a bit more heft began pouring in. A platter of steaming hot, marinated sojuk sausage in a spicy tomato broth that pairs so perfectly with Kababji’s fresh bread. Dipping a gorgeously deep golden falafel into their signature taratoor tahini sauce takes Levantine lovers back to days spent perusing the streets of Beirut, in quest for the perfect falafel. And lest we forget: the masterpiece that is the Fattet Kabab with Cherry. For those of you who don’t know, Fatte is a classic Levantine dish comprised of homemade laban (yogurt), mixed in with crispy bread and a protein of sorts. This is a dish that mothers, aunts and grandmothers compete against 108

each other for and go to great lengths to prove whose is better. Kababji’s fusion take on the classic dish gave it a comfortable, contemporary feel that wasn’t disrespectful towards tradition, making it hands down, our favorite dish of the day. But then, we were faced with two pièces de résistance: the Spicy Kebab, and the Taouk with Herbs. The taouk was cooked to perfection, encrusted in a delicate compilation of herbs that compliment the tender protein perfectly. Pair it with some fresh, seasonal Spinach Salad, and you have yourselves a light and lovely meal! As for the Spicy Kabab, be warned: this isn’t for the faint of tongue. If you like your kabab spicy, then this dish will exceed your expectations! Made with Kababji’s signature, perfected spice mix, you’ll find

your mouth pleasantly burning with the fieriness of this gorgeous dish – just don’t forget to combine it with some Hummos Beiruti for a bit of a balance! As always, Kababji has not only satisfied our cravings for a fusion of modern cooking and traditional Lebanese barbecue, but it’s exceeded them as well. We now know where our go-to spot for relaxing, eating, smoking argeeleh and catching up on good times in a peaceful ambiance will be. Treat yourself to Kababji at any of their 6 dine-in locations! We visited their flagship location at Marina Mall, on Salem Al Mubarak Street. Kababji is available for delivery online via talabat.com, or by calling them at 186 1616. PALMER JOHNSON X BUGATTI NINIETTE 66 YACHT

Sometimes, the only thing that boats share with the sports cars that "inspired" them is their name and a coat of paint. That is demonstrably not the case with the Palmer Johnson x Bugatti Niniette 66 Yacht. The curving line that defines the sides of the Chiron is carried over to the 20-meter-long vessel. On deck, there's a luxurious lounge area, with a hot tub, fire pit, and champagne bar, and the interior quarters are similarly posh, with plenty of leather, suede, carbon, and polished metal, a guest bathroom, a galley kitchen, a skylight, and an enormous bed.

KURT COBAIN'S HAGSTROM BLUE SPARKLE DELUXE GUITAR

Kurt Cobain would have been 50-years-old this year, and to honor the rock legend one of his guitars is going up for a special auction. Kurt Cobain's Hagstrom Blue Sparkle Deluxe Guitar was owned by the Nirvana frontman in 1992, and then gifted to a close friend by Courtney Love in 1994 following his death. It's been unplayed for decades, and remains in nearly the same condition. Ten percent of proceeds from the auction will be donated to a Portland-based nonprofit that helps people transition from homelessness to housing.

WARMTONE RECORD PRESSING MACHINE BMW K75 ALPHA MOTORCYCLE The WarmTone Record Pressing Machine aims to replace comparatively ancient machines currently hard at work to satiate our appetite for wax. Fully automated, it uses modern technologies to let operators monitor and control every step of the process, including pressing, trimming, and labelling, on multiple machines at once. Its advanced steam heating and water cooling systems virtually eliminate warps, and cuts pressing timeframes nearly in half.

Rarely do unofficial concept designs become a reality. The BMW K75 Alpha Motorcycle, however, arrives as a happy exception. Originally conceived by as a Salt Flats racer by designer Mehmet Doruk Erdem, it became a reality when Erdem teamed with builder Mark "Makr" Atkinson. In the process, the donor bike gained a turbo, reworked shifter, new brakes, steering components, and an entirely new frame and fairing to realize Erdem's original design.

DIETS: DO THEY WORK?

Sustaining your health versus an array of never-ending fad and yo-yo diets

By May El Habachi

If you are one of the millions of people trying to lose weight, here’s a tip: Don’t go on a diet. In the effort to lose weight, many try fad diets only to realize that they don’t work in the long term. In fact, 95 percent of diets fail and most people regain their weight in one to five years, according to Statistics for Weight Discrimination study. Meanwhile in Kuwait, diet and weight loss centers are becoming popular, with more than 10 centers operating to date. Yet, diabetes and obesity are skyrocketing and show no signs of subsiding anytime soon. About 20 percent of adults in Kuwait have diabetes according to the International Diabetes Federation, and 42 percent of adults are obese according to the Food Security Index. So, what seems to be going wrong? Why Diets Don’t Work To lose weight successfully, there has to be a change in mindset, according to Angy Aboud, a nutritional therapist based in the UK. “Forget numbers. Forget that you have to lose a certain amount of weight within a certain time period. The best approach to weight loss is to adopt a way of eating that you can sustain for the rest of your life,” says Aboud. While adopting healthy eating habits is no easy feat, it is one of the most effective ways to lose weight and maintain your health. “Diets that are very severe are also very unhealthy in the long term and rarely result in permanent weight loss,” says Aboud. Aliaa, a middle aged woman and a mother of two adult children, has been conscious of her weight for most of her life. Although, she’s not considered overweight, she is no stranger to dieting. “I have tried a few diets to reach my ideal weight. Although, the diets worked while I was on them, as soon as I stopped, I would gain all the weight back,” she says. Despite having the discipline to follow through her prescribed diets, Aliaa decided to change her approach to eating. “I lost weight while dieting, but I didn’t feel very healthy. I wasn’t eating certain food groups and this affected my health and energy levels.” Not eating a balanced diet can create nutritional deficiencies and imbalances. “Having a balanced diet and eating all food groups is not only important for weight loss, but it’s also important for maintaining overall health and wellness,” notes Aboud. As a part of her health program, Aboud provides nutrition education about the different food groups so that her clients can make healthy 114

food choices long after the program is over. This means sustainable results, rather than fluctuating weightloss due to unsustainable diet practices Effects of yo-yo Dieting Repeatedly losing and gaining weight can have harmful effects on the body. May Al Gharabally, a certified health coach in Kuwait, believes that yo-yo dieting makes it harder for people to lose weight long-term. “When women are yo-yo dieting, their bodies think that there is a famine coming because they are eating too few calories. This ultimately slows down their metabolism to starvation mode and stores fat for later use,” explains Al Gharabally. “So any excess calories consumed will usually result in weight gain.” Difficulty losing weight is not the only downside of yo-yo dieting. “Not all weight loss is good loss. Yo-yo dieting and other unhealthy ways of losing weight can result in losing muscle mass, and can sometimes cause kidney or heart problems,” says Aboud. “That’s why it is important to always consult with your doctor or physician before going on any weight loss program.” While quick fixes are rarely the answer to healthy weight loss, they are usually the most popular because they almost always produce immediate results. “Most people come to me after having tried everything to lose weight from fad diets to weight loss spas and hypnosis,” says Al Gharabally. “Although my clients see weight loss results with my coaching, they also experience complete wellness and lifestyle changes such as sleeping better, having more energy and overall

feeling better.” Avoiding yo-yo dieting altogether will also make for longer lasting results, and sustainable weight loss. Applying Healthy Eating Habits Sometimes, small lifestyle habits can have the biggest impact. “Drinking lots of water, practicing clean eating and incorporating mild physical activity such as walking are some easy and effective ways to squeeze healthy habits into everyday life,” says Aboud. Other options include eating natural, organic and whole foods and having moderate sized-meals recommends Al Gharabally. “I help people lose weight by putting together a program that is very similar to their current lifestyle, but with a few tweaks here and there to help them achieve their health goals.” However, one of the most important habits of healthy eating is moderation, not deprivation. “When people feel they are on a diet, they deny themselves certain foods, so when they come off the diet, they will resort to their old eating habits and ultimately gain more weight,” says Aboud. She recommends ditching the “all or nothing” mentality and allowing small frequent splurges throughout the week to reduce the chances of over eating. Healthy eating is ultimately about moving toward a new lifestyle and doing it through small and consistent changes. “It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” says Aboud. A 911 FOR THE ROAD AND TRACK – THE NEW PORSCHE 911 GT3 The Porsche 911 GT3 delivers motorsport-like performance, a systematic lightweight construction and an unfiltered driving experience. In the new generation of the radical two-seater, the connection between everyday driving and the racetrack is more intense. At the heart of the enhanced model is a four-litre flat, six-cylinder engine. The extremely high-revving naturally aspirated unit with 500 hp (368 kW) remains virtually unchanged from the thoroughbred 911 GT3 Cup racing car. A redesigned chassis with rear-axle steering and the systematic lightweight construction are specifically tuned to convert the engine power into superior driving dynamics. Developed on the same test track and manufactured on the same production line as the racing cars, Porsche’s motorsport technology has once again been incorporated into a road-approved sportscar. The majority of Porsche GT drivers also like to take their sportscars for a spin on the racetrack, which is where the new 911 GT3 really comes into its own, thanks to a weight-to-power ratio of 2.86 kg/hp (3.88 kg/kW). With seven-speed doubleclutch transmission (PDK) as standard, which has been specifically tuned for use in the GT, the two-seater can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. It boasts a top speed of 318 km/h and weighs 1,430 kg (with a full tank of fuel). For proponents of pure unadulterated driving, Porsche also offers the 911 GT3 with a six-speed sports manual gearbox. This enables the high-performance 911 to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 320 km/h. The chassis of the new 911 GT3 benefits from Porsche’s motor racing experience which has been reworked for even better driving dynamics. The new two-seater sits around 25 mm lower than the 911 Carrera S. In addition to the further refined basic design, the chassis also boasts superior handling characteristics, thanks in large part to the active rear-axle steering. Depending on the speed, it steers either in the opposite or the same direction as the front wheels, thereby improving the vehicle’s agility and stability. The dynamic engine mounts and the rear differential lock also boost the car’s driving dynamics. The 911 GT3 is available to order with a planned launch in Kuwait starting mid-July at a starting price of KWD 44,500. Visit Porsche Centre Kuwait in Al Rai on the 4th ring road. Please call 1870 870 for more information.

HUBLOT PRESENTS CLASSIC FUSION ITALIA INDEPENDENT COLLECTION Since 2014, two collections have been born from the partnership between Hublot, Italia Independent and Lapo Elkann. Although both of the previous collections were based on the legendary Big Bang Unico model, this time the magic of this wildly creative team was unleashed on the Classic Fusion model. Its name seems to have predestined it for this new special edition: there has never been such a fine example of the fusion of the 'classic' and innovation. A task that was made-to-measure (no pun intended) for Lapo Elkann—frequently named "the most elegant man in the world". The “sartoria Rubinacci” was not chosen at random: since 1932, three generations of Rubinacci have been at the reins of this institution of good taste and masculine refinement: Gennaro, the founding grandfather, Mariano, the father who now manages the house from Naples and, of course Luca, master of the store in Milan, and one of the most photographed men on the planet thanks to his unique style. Between them they have dressed everybody from the Duke of Kent to singer Bryan Ferry, not to mention of course the Agnelli family, of which Lapo Elkann is the worthy successor. For more information, visit www.hublot.com. MARELLA SPRING SUMMER 2017 Marella’s Spring/Summer 17 flirts with rock and sweetness, displaying a flowing wardrobe, because everything is flexible and nothing defined. The tropics during summertime move to the city, the graphical jungle prints characterize the full-circle skirts to wear with blouses and tops in ocean hues, shirts and blousons with vibrant tropical garden prints boldly blend with plain-coloured or Vichy-patterned trousers in a daring mix & match. The foliage of palm trees, in green, light blue, Mediterranean blue and blush pink is the must-have for the following summertime items: the slip dress, the peplum top combined with wide trousers, the fullcircle skirt and the blouse with flared sleeves. Delicate and dreamy is the occasion wear. Colours are light and lively, easy-going and super chic: emerald green, Mediterranean light blue, sky blue, oleander pink, naked or black for the mini or maxi dresses in lace, silk and rich organza. Precious fabrics define the slightly structured silhouettes, flowing and romantic, with small gathers and bows creating a fresh and impressive look without going over the top. VIRGO AUG 23 – SEP 22 You may be obsessed with finding your true purpose in life. Although you may not like to admit it, this could occupy your thoughts a lot. Try not to be so stressed about it. Realize that knowing your true purpose can take many years, even a lifetime, of careful thought and observation. Try to focus on enjoying more of the daily moments. You may just stumble onto the answer you seek.

LIBRA SEP 23 – OCT 22 You may feel rather introspective, and decidedly out of step with everyone else's frenzied pace. You're a thoughtful person with deep spiritual beliefs. It's understandable that you may sometimes feel disheartened by all the consumerism and conspicuous consumption that fills society. Try not to let this get you down. Try to focus instead on your reasons for being happy.

SCORPIO OCT 23 – NOV 22 There are many social demands on you now, in addition to the usual demands of home and work. This is when you need to be selfish and guard your time. If you try and accommodate everyone else's wishes, you will sacrifice your own. To truly enjoy your time with others, remember that you must fulfill your own needs first.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21

You may feel a strong urge to run away from it all, but where would you go? The restlessness you feel may be in response to all the pressures on you now. Social demands, work requirements, and the needs of family may be pulling you to the breaking point. You can turn off your phone for the day. Pull down the blinds, cuddle up with a good book, and pretend that you're all alone.

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 19 You take great pleasure in a neat, organized house. In your mind, cleanliness really is king. Today you may be dismayed by how rundown your home has become.
