About the cover The heroes are back! Flip through to read all about our cover feature on the Kayak4Kuwait K20 Expedition that started in November 2016 and ended last month. Spreading awareness about the current environmental state of the Arabian Gulf, Bashar Al-Huneidi, Mansour Al-Safran and Irish adventurer Colin Wong kayaked from Kuwait to Oman to highlight the region’s natural beauty.

If you’re reading this, then it’s safe to assume you survived the annual water-gun massacre on Gulf Road that’s disguised as a National Day celebration. Most of us who’ve been in Kuwait for years are used to this rather bizarre scene, and don’t even think twice about it, and in some cases (yes, I’m guilty) participate with our own water filled contraptions and balloons, too. Since as we all know the saying “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!”, it’s only when you meet expats who’ve been in Kuwait for less than a year, and you see the surprised/shocked/horrified look in their eyes, that you remember that this isn’t exactly normal, no matter how much fun it might be, and that it’s a direct result of a lot of pent up boredom and frustration by the youth of Kuwait.

The bazaar team...

Here at bazaar, we try to do our bit to alleviate the boredom by bringing you the most awesome happenings all over the country. To start us off, Bashar Al-Huneidi and his dedicated team of kayakers are back from their Kayak4Kuwait K20 Expedition. Starting in Kuwait, their goal was to spread awareness to save our region's natural beauty. Check out our beautiful cover feature.

Content Coordinator

The annual Taste of Q8 is kicking off and we can’t wait to see you all there! Happening at The Boulevard in Salmiya, entrance is completely free to the public. We also chat to this year’s visiting chef, Chef Annabel Karmel about her deliciously nutritious meal recipes for the entire family – babies included! While we’re on the topic of food, check out our bazaar goes dining feature at Meem Café as we sample their revamped menu by the latest local sensation, Chef Khaled Al Baker. And if you happen to read this on a lazy Friday morning, why not skip making breakfast and order some delightfully fresh mana’eesh from Mana’eesh Inc. instead. Come to think of it, you can do that any day and any time of the week – they’re a solid go-to at our office!

We’re also loving what’s happening with Elevation Burger’s Al-Seif branch! Turning the space into a creative hub of sorts, you can go enjoy a delicious meal at any time of day to some wonderful entertainment by some of Kuwait’s emerging talents. Have you visited Mayar Complex in Shuwaikh Industrial yet? If you haven’t, you really should, as the area is booming with awesome concepts! That’s where our Truth or Dare feature, Rula Liddawi is based at her newest wholesome café SUPER/FOODS. You can read all about how her passion for clean-eating turned into cute little café with wonderful offerings. We venture further in Shuwaikh’s Industrial area to get Up Close and Personal with Haya Al Abdulkareem to discuss the creation of The Print Room. We visited the location – it’s right behind Shuwaikh Market – to chat with Haya about her workshops, screen-printing and Kuwait’s creative community. Speaking of super interesting people, we caught up with Mariam Jaffar to talk about her delivery-only service, The Cake Shop just in time for Mother’s Day! Having sampled the cakes, ourselves (you’re welcome, by the way), we loved how this concept takes customization to the next level! Did we also mention that the cakes, especially their brownies, are beyond delicious? Last but not least, don’t forget to check out our Arabs Abroad feature. We spoke to NYC-based Kuwaiti photographer, Maha Alasaker, about her photography work and latest collective exhibition Transcendence. And that’s just some of the awesome things happening around town, so keep flipping and enjoy what this beautiful country has to offer!

Happy reading, and to every wonderful mama out there, Happy Mother’s Day! Ahmed El-Adly

The Print Room is one of Kuwait’s most valuable modern initiatives, and it wouldn’t be the great hub it is today if it weren’t for Haya Al Abdulkareem. This month’s Up Close and Personal candidate is a brilliant artistic individual—get to know Haya in this exclusive piece.

The buzz about the brand new health food bar SUPER/FOODS is loud and proud, so it was only appropriate for us to corner the face behind the concept! DISCOVERING THE PRINT ROOM With Haya Al Abdulkareem

By bazaar staff

Owner of The Print Room, teaches printmaking, a graphic designer [by degree], bag designer and gallery agent out of London: Those are some of the attributes our Up Close and Personal interviewee used to introduce herself with a huge smile. A true maverick in her artistic discipline, Haya Al Abdulkareem is a multifaceted talent on a mission: To educate and provide a space for screen-printing in Kuwait. “Oh, and I also represent some international brands in Kuwait!” Haya quickly chimed in. In essence, she splits her time between two platforms – fashion and art – and would rather stick to being known simply as Haya, sans any fancy title! Managing a fashion showroom under the name Print Stories, Haya looks after designers that produce hand-crafted, high-end fashion pieces. Then, there’s The Print Room, which acts like an art hub [a collective even] for people to come and produce artwork. An incubator for artists that want to not only produce, but also to showcase their print-making skills as well. The Print Room, in short, is the first of its kind here in Kuwait. But before we delve into the making of The Print 32

Room and the inspiration behind it, we just had to know more about her bag line: Folklore. “I’ve been doing it for four years now,” Haya gushed, “and it used to be exclusively sold at Harvey Nichols, but now it’s available all over Kuwait, online and in Greece – it will also be available in Saudi.” Using eco-friendly, zero animal cruelty materials, the bags are entirely handmade in Kuwait! “I even copyrighted the items!” she added. “I really like the shift in the local fashion industry and how people are taking the leap to create their own labels,” Haya explained. While some stick to showcasing on Instagram, she had taken her products a step further by registering her logo and going to the ministry to get it fully licensed and urges others to do the same. “I’ve always wanted to study design,” Haya explained, “Be it art, graphic, fashion – I always knew I would end up in design.” As she was graduating High School, Haya applied to Central Saint Martins in London to study fashion. “I was only 17 at the time, so they accepted me to take an art and design foundation course,” Haya went on, “which was the best thing that ever happened to me. I went on a rotation for an entire year studying fashion, sculpture, fine arts, design, jewelry, photography and interior design. Once the year was done, everyone on the course had to apply to the university of their choice, so I reapplied to Central Saint Martins’ Fashion Journalism course.”

Haya was accepted to the program but had to sit for another interview which changed her career path. They had advised her to abandon fashion and head into graphic design – confused, Haya decided to take their professional advice and run with it. “I just wish I can thank them! Thank you thank you thank you – whoever you are. Going into graphic design was the best thing I’ve ever done because it helped me do everything I wanted to and also led me to print-making which gave me a purpose.” By creating Print Stories, Haya is able to curate and market different brands regionally which she showcases seasonally at The Print Room’s gallery. While Print Stories is an online curation of brands that are backed by a strong craftsmanship ethos, The Print Room is an art incubator and gallery space, in collaboration with Visual Therapy’s Shahad Bishara. What led Haya towards creating The Print Room was the fact that Kuwait lacked a publically accessible print-making studio. She also enjoys working with artists and pushing them further to reach their potential – so the gallery space at The Print Room has been dedicated to exactly that. From there, the Print Room Collective (PRC) was born. The PRC is a group of young local artists that work bimonthly in accordance to a brief provided by Haya that revolves around a specific theme. The PRC’s job is to then run with the narrative and create their own interpretations of it.

Providing a space for people to collaborate on ideas, produce their individual work and then showcase it, Haya finds herself inspired to push the artists further. While the members of the PRC can come from any artistic focus, they all learn to use screen-printing to produce their final piece. Anyone can join the PRC as long as they approach Haya at one of the gallery showcases, which will then lead to an interview of sorts to assess their work and how it can benefit the collective. Apart from that, The Print Room offers a plethora of workshops! From screen-printing workshops to other artistic ones, Haya is always happy to accommodate those with a skill that they’d like to teach. “Everyone’s welcome!” Haya said. From all the workshops Haya has hosted and given at The Print Room, her favorite one, by far, would be the children’s workshops. “As hectic as seven year-olds can be, they were my favorite to teach!” she laughed. Then, when she was approached by Nuqat to conduct a workshop with them, she was happy to do so. But if you missed the Studio Nuqat screen-printing workshop with Haya, fret not, you can always join in any of her workshops at The Print Room. And before she had to jet off to her next PRC meeting, we managed to get Haya to fill out our fun questionnaire.

THE SUPERFOODIE

Clean eating with Rula Liddawi By bazaar staff

“I think that the Earth is the best source for health” Rula Liddawi says as we settle into our comfortable seats and she glances around appreciatively at her brand new baby, wholesome café SUPER/FOODS. “When I get sick, I don’t even take meds anymore, I just take an immunity shot! You truly are what you eat.” To Rula, owning and running a health food bar wasn’t expected, as she never had any particular interest or held a background in the Food and Beverage industry. But during her days working in marketing and brand management for fashion and retail, something shifted within her. “When I started doing yoga five years ago, I became conscious of what I put into my body, because I had a newfound respect for my body being able to push itself to limitless options.” This gratitude led her to clean eating, which was no easy feat on a hunter-gatherer and economical level. “I came to realize that finding natural food was difficult, because with the exception of produce, most food items in the supermarket are filled with unidentifiable ingredients that you can’t even pronounce.” This seems to be a recurring issue for many who, like Rula, value clean-eating ethics, as healthier foods on the market are often less accessible and are more expensive, as opposed to the quick-fixes at fast food chains that you can get for not more than KD 1. So along with the support of two partners, the vision was created and this wholesome Mom and Pop concept was born, in the heart of Shuwaikh Industrial’s stunning Mayar Complex. We visit with Rula while she takes a break from her newfound profession as resident waitress to serve us some of SUPER/FOODS' yummiest items, including their Super Bites: a trio of truffles containing all-natural gifts of the earth concocted into something sweet for your palate to enjoy. That’s the admirable thing about this establishment: everything is made in-house and fresh, from flours to nut milks, it’s all vegetarian, and the lot of it is vegan. “But we don’t discriminate – we have whey for those who need their dairy!” Rula assures us. If being vegan tastes anything like their Super Bites, looks like the beautifully packaged and hilariously branded juices, and is as fun as making your own Smoothie Bowl and topping it with all the fruits your heart desires, we’re in. “I know that the whole health movement may be a hype here,” Rula says with a smile over a steaming 34

Matcha Latte, “but I don’t care. This is a cause that I really believe in, and if it’s being done for the greater good, then why the heck not?”

TRUTH OR DARE QUESTIONNAIRE

How would your mother describe you in one word? Genuine. How would you describe your mother in one word? Poised. What is the most ridiculous question you’ve ever been asked? “Do you go to school on camels?” (Canadians, eh?!) What is the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done? I say a lot of spontaneous things, (and get in trouble for them), but my actions are a little more calculated. What is your theme song? I’d like to think that I’m a little more complex than to have a single song describe my entire life! But at this stage in my life, it would have to be the theme song for 20th Century Fox. What word in the English or Arabic language do you wish you had invented? Rambunctious! Where would you like to live? What is your dream retirement location? Tuscany, Italy. What is the first famous quote that comes to your mind? “We are here to awaken from the illusion of our separateness.” –Thich Nhat Hanh I

What animal best describes the kind of partner you’d be interested in? An elephant: Strong yet gentle. What do you miss about your childhood? Nonconforming. Not having to live up to anyone’s expectations, except my own. If you could change your name, what would you change it to? Princess Consuela Banana-Hammock! Come on! No? How would you describe your handshake in one word? Confident. What is the toughest part of your character? My stance on feminism and women’s rights. Who is your favorite historical figure? My grandfather - the most interesting person I know. What in the world do you least desire? Restraint. What do you think is lacking in the world, which if there was more of would make the world a better place? Compassion. Why do you think most girls/guys like you? I’m real, and really friendly. Finish this sentence: “Happiness is a thing called…” My yoga mat.

SUPER/FOODS is now open at Mayar Complex in Shuwaikh Industrial. Follow them on Instagram @superfoodskw.

“You won’t believe what this girl does next” “He started filming, and suddenly…” “Things you did not know about Heath Ledger” Ah, click-baits: They type. You click. They happy! Ever wanted to physically reach through your screen in a time-traveling warp, moments after you were click-baited, and punch the person who posted it? No? Then you and I are different people, obviously, unless you are a rich, slim, handsome guy, then we’re literally two different people. In my humble opinion, click-baiting is the modern form of “Knock & Ditch”. You 'knock' on someone's attention center, they click to let you in, and the content is not what you expect behind the door. Yet, this is not where click-baiting originates from. Its origin arrives from a literal concept we all use on a daily basis and without realizing it: verbiage. In my arrogant opinion, this is how click-baiting began. When the first human spoke (I am assuming genders here from personal experience), she told a story of how she went to the creek, grabbed a rock, hit a bison that was chill-axing on the head, and killed it. However, she noticed that people around her did not interact with her story, as they had more pressing things to worry about, such as the fact that no one has discovered fire yet. Then, her Eureka (“bagagaha” in Medieval Times) moment. She painted a big painting on the cave wall depicting the infamous incident but 36

with two small twists: the bison is attacking her now, and it was so big that it could have sniffed her through its nostrils. And voila, her female friends gathered around the painting to hear the story. At that very moment, the wheels in her brains (although the actual wheel was not invented yet) went into overdrive and she spat the words that would forever change our internet history: “Oh my gosh, like, you won’t believe, like, what happened.” And from there, she heightened every aspect of the story, using and inventing bigger words to depict the gravity of every situation this story encompasses, until she ended the story to the roaring applause of her friends who told her she should have her own reality show. And ever since then, man-kind has been using words in the wrong denomination to gain attention and to put themselves in the lime-light. When you see a friend after a long time, don’t use words like “Oh! You lost a ton of weight!” Because seriously, your friend did not weigh a ton and two hundred pounds. They just weighed two hundred and now they weigh substantially less. That kind of manifestation of our emotions can really be damaging to others, either physically or emotionally. I mean, that friend probably went and indulged on four pizzas because he heard “lost” and “tons” and thought subliminally “four pizzas will not make me gain a ton back.” Or my favorite: “I woke up today, tried starting my

car and it just didn’t start…I’m so depressed”. Honey, honey, honey. You are not depressed. You are just inconvenienced. How shallow is the imprint of your soul on this universe’s canvas, that if a car did not start, would lead to your inevitable depression? I mean, shouldn’t the sentence really be “I woke up today, tried starting my car and it just didn’t start…I’m so going to be late but I guess that’s the price I have to pay for not giving myself extra time to leave and betting on a machine made by erroneous creatures not to fault and break down?” Click-baits are nothing more than someone listening to Kim Kardashian speak and think, “I can use the way she talks to make money.” So, if you’re like me, happy and jolly and click-baits throw you off, there are two things that you can do: 1 - Shut up and move on, because really there is no need to make a big fuss about you having to spend 0.89 calories to move your fingers and click on the track pad. 2 - You can start changing the way you tell your stories, because it’s as bad as click-baits. What I wrote in the last line of this article…Well, you’ve read it twice already. George Tarabay is a local radio host, comedian, and marketing expert. CENTER OF THE ARTS A night of music

By Ashley Alleluya

It was one of those freakishly artsy nights in Kuwait. Two events celebrating music, several artists bringing their A-game and a difficult choice for a music buff. We chose 'A Night of Music' at the Center of the Arts in Shuwaikh, and it is a choice I’m glad we made. The venue was crowded, with everyone packed into a spacious ballet studio on gigantic pillows scattered on the studio floor. It was an intimate setting that promoted cuddles on an exceptionally cold evening – and frankly, I love huge pillows. After a brief hello from Omar Afuni, we jumped right in. ‘Strumming my pain with her fingers’ Ghaneema was the first one up, with Omar Salem on the electric guitar and Abdulrahman Essa on the drums. She has a voice that interestingly sits between frothy and husky, a perfect lazy weekend morning voice. "Fairy Tales" by Cayetano seems to be tailor-made for her voice, and I found myself falling in love with the song once again. Ghaneema plays at fewer events around Kuwait than Omar Afuni and Carol Souki, but she’s a smart performer. Between eclectic choices like Beth Hart and Amy Winehouse, she delivered a Justin Timberlake cover that had me love-stoned and then transported me back to high-school with some Kylie Minogue. She’s also quirky, unrehearsed and raw, a quality that translated into moments of hilarity when she interacted with the crowd. 38

And when she got Carol up on stage to end her set with Elle King’s "Xs and Os", Ghaneema confirmed that she can work an audience and keep them wanting more. It was the perfect airy start to the show. ‘Singing my life with his words’ We barely had a few minutes before Omar Afuni’s set so we had to choose between rushing to the restrooms, catching a quick smoke-break or making a dash outside for something hot to eat or drink (my only gripe with the event.) He had Lester Rodrigues on the keyboard and Adel Al Qattan on the guitar, and for the next forty minutes, I relived the many stages of a bitter relationship with his songs. Omar showcased some tracks from his recent album RUSH, dedicated a track from Adel Al Qattan’s latest album Qattana, and also paid homage to George Michael, one of his music idols. He began with the intense "Resurrect me," segued into "This Can’t Be Love" – a snippet from the La La Land soundtrack – and moved to "Spinning Top," another original. Omar’s is a voice that is earthy with a theatrical quality, hitting the high notes and the bass with equal ease. He is also a showman, mixing up his songs with glimpses into the inspiration behind his lyrics and teaching the audience the hook of his very catchy original, Rush. Tying the set together with "Faith", "Careless Whisper," and John Legend’s "All of Me," Omar Afuni gave the rest of us a musical catharsis - a little heartache, healing, foot-tapping, reminiscing and an earworm.

‘Killing me softly, with her song’ Carol Souki was the final act and it was a clever move, saving her for last. If Ghaneema’s voice is breezy and Omar’s is silken and earthy, then Carol’s is fire. A roaring blaze one minute and a gentle warmth the next. Carol is a master class in live performance – she’s talented, expressive, engaging and grabs your attention from the get-go. With Adel Al-Qattan on the guitar and Bader Nana on the Cajón, Carol began strong. From the start, LP’s "Lost On You" was vibrant with meaning, blending seamlessly into Sia’s "Chandelier". Carol also introduced us to some of her originals from her upcoming album: "Life," "I Want You" and "Ain’t My Level" are tracks that fuse together her strong vocals, witty lyrics and the promise of making it to my love-life playlists. Other highlights were her covers of "Stronger Than Me" and "Liberian Girl" in a voice that was seductive and coy, yet honest. Her playful side emerged when she wound up her performance with the audience dancing, clapping and singing to "Uptown Funk," reminding everyone that she knows how to get a party going. You know that feeling of elation mixed with irrational anxiety when you find a perfect piece of art, a kickass show on Netflix or a book that blows your mind and you cannot start a new one because you’re afraid it won’t match this level of genius? That’s the feeling that still lingers in my mind long after the night was done. Originally published on www.kingdome.co. A WOMAN OF KUWAIT

Chatting with photographer Maha Alasaker

By bazaar staff

When Maha Alasaker’s work surfaced on our respective Facebook timelines, we automatically felt bursts of intrigue and respect for the Kuwaiti photographer. With an impressive resume of both featured and collaborative photographic works filling pages of various publications, Maha’s skills have been honed to a recognizable level by hoisting herself up to Vogue Arabia’s standards, with their recent coverage of a personal project that she holds near and dear to her heart: Women of Kuwait. Maha, born and raised in Kuwait, moved to NYC in August 2013, and graduated from Manhattan’s International Center of Photography (ICP) in 2014. She soon after gained representation by JHB Gallery as of July 2014, and has been working like a busy bee with gallery exhibitions, freelance photography, and editorial photography since then. “My work engages with identity and cultural issues.” She tells us, and she sees Women of Kuwait being a direct example of that ethos. Her capturing a series of everyday Kuwaiti women between the ages of 20-40 in their natural state and private environments displays the complex dimensions and variety of perspectives that come with being an Arab woman in this day and age. “Ever since I moved to New York from Kuwait a few years ago, people have been questioning my identity, wondering how I am what I am today.” She writes in her Artist’s Statement. “These questions arise out of curiosity, due to the general social stigma placed on Middle Eastern women. The belief that women are constricted to a certain appearance, or lifestyle.” Other than Women of Kuwait, Maha’s works have been around. Her editorial photography gig has had her published in several fashion magazines, including Vogue Italia, Material Girl, Nord Magazine, and once upon a time, our very own bazaar! She has also had work featured in numerous exhibitions in the UAE, her hometown Kuwait, and New York City. The most recent accomplishment to be proud of is Transcendence, currently showing at the Carrie Able Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. Though we have yet to see the works displayed in Transcendence, we have no doubt that it will leave many, ourselves included, feeling a similar range of emotions that we experienced when stumbling across Women of Kuwait. After scrolling through these penetrating and powerful images, we knew we had to contact Maha to pick her brain on her artistic direction, inspiration, and life story as an Arab Abroad. Where are you originally from? I am from Kuwait. Where is your family based? My entire family lives in Kuwait. 42

What were the circumstances under which you left your home country? After working as an editorial photographer in Kuwait for six years, I wanted to study more about Fine Art photography. I also wanted to learn old-school analog photography and darkroom practices. So, I continued my education at ICP, and after graduation, I decided to work here, and here we go, I’m still in New York! What is your favorite part of your job? Being a freelance photographer, I have a new [favorite part] every day, and get to work with someone new every day. My days are always filled with new experiences and challenges, and I love it! What are you working on currently? I am in the process of creating a new project, which is a continuation of my previous work “Undisclosed”. What do you find most different about life inside and outside the Arab world? I think [life inside and outside the Arab world] are totally different experiences: It’s not about the Arab World or the rest of the world— I believe every place you live in will touch your life in one way or another. What do you find most different about work inside and outside the Arab world?

It’s tough here, and you need to work harder and learn fast. Building your network takes time. I am starting here from zero, but it is a rewarding feeling to challenge yourself and start over in a new place. Where else have you lived? I lived in Frankfurt for three months. What is your favorite thing about where you live? There is nothing like NYC! You leave your home with one plan and find yourself ending up with another: You can’t predict your day. What is the worst thing about where you live? It is competitive, and I don’t like competition. Where will you eventually retire? I don’t know. Finish this sentence: In a year from now I will be… …a new me. Finish this sentence: When I die, I will… …experience what death means. Check out Maha’s work by visiting her website, www.mahaalasaker.com, and follow her on Instagram @mahalasaker. For more information or to contact Maha, email her at maha.alasaker@gmail.com. THE K20 EX A KAYAKING JOURNEY FROM KUWAIT TO OMAN TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR THE GCC’S MARINE ENVIRONMENT By bazaar staff

Using basic navigational tools and their personal strengths, Kuwaiti kayakers Bashar Al-Huneidi, Mansour Al-Safran and Irish professional kayaker Colin Wong set out from Kuwait on a spectacular expedition across the Gulf. Raising awareness about the region’s marine environment, the trio went forth in November 2016 and concluded their journey in the UAE mangrove of Khor Kalba by the sea of Oman. Covering a total distance of 2000 km, or a staggering 25-50 km per day, the three environmental heroes kayaked for an average of 8-12 hours per day, a feat that could be compared to running a marathon every day, for a total of 90 days. Despite a road accident that occurred when the Kayakers had to continue on land for part of the expedition, as well as the sinking of their support ship along the way, the K20 team did not give up. Indeed, the kayakers persevered, as the expedition’s main goal was to complete the journey to effectively tell a story about the current health of the region’s marine environment, its incomparable beauty, and why policy in the region needs to dynamically shift toward saving our seas. It was a journey envisioned by Kayak4Kuwait, an initiative started by the K20 expedition leader Bashar in Kuwait, for people all across the region to take note and action when it comes to the marine environment. The kayakers witnessed astounding scenery, beautiful marine protectorates and unfortunately, various alarming pollutants across the sea and the shores that the team visited. From discarded trash, forgotten fishnets, to garbage swept up to the shores by the sea’s currents, it became evident to the kayakers that development comes at a price, and that a tricky balance must be struck when it comes to managing national development and the regional environment. Through their daily kayaking efforts, the team met with many fishermen, environmental authorities as well as locals who shared the initiative’s goals and wishes to see more attention paid to the regional marine 44

XPEDITION environment. Bashar further highlighted how the entire effort was organized based on sharing knowledge, gathering information, and logical observations of the three kayakers. The kayaking adventurers took to the seas starting out in Kuwait last November. They traversed the Saudi Arabian coast line by car to continue kayaking from Bahrain onwards to Qatar and the UAE coastline until they reached the UAE's Khor Kalba mangroves bordering the shores of Oman. From there, the team went on to explore the Omani Musandam Peninsula and returned to the UAE to conclude their journey at Khor Kalba. Remarking on this journey in an interview with news portal The National, Bashar stated, “The Arabian Gulf is under immense pressure and pollution and neglect has been ruining it for 30 or 40 years. Finally, there’s been a kind of environmental awakening." Kayaker Mansour Al-Safran spoke

on the team’s challenging daily schedule, "It’s a psychological journey more than it is a physical one. The most important thing is to keep the goal in mind." For Colin Wong, the journey was difficult at times but was worth it, “I suppose it’s hard work but the places and people we’ve met along the way are just unbelievable. We’ve seen everything from turtles to dolphins!" Bashar considered peoples’ reactions as a direct success to the expedition's goal. He believes that education about the cause is imperative in order to elicit environmental change. “People would greet us at the respective shorelines and ask us, ‘Why are you here on Kayaks? What’s the point?’ – this exposure alone allowed to us to speak to locals across the Gulf about the environment." The environmental and various governmental entities in each respective country supported the K20 Expedition along every leg of the journey. “Aside from

the weather, which we could not control, the support of the various related governmental entities kept our spirits high and our end goal in sight. Without their genuine, incredible support, the journey would not have been possible.” said Bashar. The expedition is truly the first of its kind in the region, and required the complicated organization and wonderful cooperation of authorities across six nations the GCC. Bashar said, “I don’t think there is anything like the K20 Expedition, especially given the caliber of the organizational efforts involved. It was an enormous, but highly rewarding, endeavor.” Now back in Kuwait upon completing the ambitious journey across the Gulf, Bashar is currently meeting with various official environmental entities to not only discuss the expedition’s findings and observations but to also encourage real change in environmental policy. Furthermore, the K20 expedition also plans to release a documentary feature film to share the beauty they encountered along their journey and to shed light on the importance of preserving the regional marine environment. The K20 Expedition, in partnership with the Kuwait Environmental Public Authority (KEPA), was sponsored and supported by Agility Kuwait, Zain, Alghanim Marine, ACICO, Gulf Telecom, Radisson Blu Hotel Fujairah, The Palms Hotel and Dive Center, NBK holding group of Qatar (Nasser Bin Khaled), Al Sayer Holding Group, Kuwait National Coast Guard and the GCC's governmental entities involved, Mentor Arabia, Kokatat, and bazaar. The K20 Expedition would also like to thank the Kayak4Kuwait team for their organizational efforts: Sundus Hussain, Saud Al Tawash, Samia Al-Duaij, Mansourah Khuraibet, Nancy Papathousolous, Khaled Abu Al Jubain, Mathew Alexander, Tarek Al Duaige, Abdullah Bu Qmasha, Reem Al Sharhan and Islam Basuny. On a personal note, K20 Expedition group leader Bashar also thanked his family for their continuous support, "My mother for her prayers and children for missing them so much." FORGET THE WORDS By Nejoud Al Yagout

Dr. Shahd Al-Shammari is an Assistant Professor at Gust University who has authored two books: On Love and Loss and her latest, Forget the Words, which launched this year. Her first book speaks, aptly, of love and loss; a grief so profound that the reader is invited to share the pain of the author as she comes to term with separation from her beloved. Forget the Words reveals a more evolved speaker, who dances with acceptance, though still grappling with trauma. I had the blessed opportunity of interviewing Dr. Shahd for this month's issue. In your first book, you use graphic verse to reveal what it means to suffer from Multiple Sclerosis with your beloved by your side. Do you think that love can assist us in transcending even moments of intense physical suffering? Love transcends everything, all limitations. The body and physical suffering is just an example. I experiment with definitions and responsibilities of love, both to ourselves and others. Though you are a writer, you describe yourself, first and foremost, as an academic. Does this enhance the flow of your verse, since you breathe literature day and night? Sometimes it does enhance it, but sometimes it limits it. Being an academic, one is, I think, naturally critical and analytical. I am aware of how the work might be read critically, so I try to anticipate reader responses. On the other hand, I think being an academic and a "writer" is about striking a balance I have yet to achieve. Dr. Shahd, after several discussions with you, I realized that though you do not glamorize grief, and rightfully so, you have come to terms with it. In fact, your second book even reveals a light at the end of the tunnel. Is suffering an antidote for this kind of evolution of consciousness? Grief and disability or illness are not to be glorified at all. But yes, I view both simply as expressions of the body and life. They are only moments, dots, punctuation in the story of your life. Without them, you'd have run-on sentences, and nothing would make sense. That means, in a nutshell, yes, an evolution like you said. Some literary schools of thought separate the author from the body of work. What is your take on this as a poet who speaks the language of her own heart and experiences? There's no answer to that question, because sometimes the work takes on a voice of its own. Though you read my work as simply about my experiences, which is valid, I see it as more a mesh of experiences, not only mine. The text can

52

and cannot be separated from the author. Like a child, you give birth to it, but it doesn't have to remain yours. It's a part of the author, but not the whole. Lastly, poetry is not your only forum of expression. You are now in the process of writing short stories. Has it been easy to make this transition? And any nuggets of wisdom for others venturing into various mediums of writing? I don't even call myself a poet. That's a grand label and humbling. I don't see myself within any

genre; poetry, fiction, nonfiction - they're all just genres we use as tools to express experience. I am experimenting with short stories which will be released later in 2017. My only advice to others wanting to write is simply to write. Throw yourself into it, and don't look back. Don't even consider genres or labels. Follow Dr. Shahd Al-Shammari on Instagram and Twitter @shahdalshammari. You can follow Nejoud on social media @nejoud.alyagout or visit her website www.nejoudalyagout.com.

ANNABEL KARMEL AT THE TASTE OF Q8 Meet the UK’s No. 1 Children’s cookery author!

By bazaar staff

It all began with the publishing of Annabel Karmel’s The Complete Baby & Toddler Meal Planner in 1991, a cookbook born out of her own son’s fussy eating habits. From there, Annabel’s desire to help families around the world make better choices when it comes to feeding their loved little ones became unstoppable. Credited with starting a food revolution with her tasty recipes and simple methods, this global feeding phenomenon has since gone on to sell more than 4 million copies worldwide, and people of all ages now rely on Britain’s original ‘mumprener’ for the best mealtimes. Scheduled to make an appearance at the upcoming Taste of Q8, we speak to Annabel Karmel about her collaboration with Costa Coffee and all the fun activities planned for the fun-filled weekend! What inspired you to focus your culinary talents on children? I actually started working life as a musician – I was a talented harpist. I studied classical music at the Conservatoire in The Hague, Holland and then continued at the Royal College of Music in London. In fact, my very first job was playing at the Savoy hotel in London! It was the tragedy of losing my first child Natasha, who was born healthy but who died at 13 weeks old from a viral infection that led me to change direction into the field of nutrition. It wasn’t a diet-related illness but I was understandably cautious when my second child, Nicholas, came along. I wanted to give him the very best foods. But I’d landed myself the world’s fussiest eater. I struggled to find enticing recipes to encourage him and so set about devising my own. I shared my recipes with other mums and soon I had everyone at my child’s playgroup queuing up for my recipes. So I decided to set about compiling a cookbook. After being rejected by over fifteen publishing houses, I finally secured a publishing deal. But never in my wildest dreams did I foresee that this cookbook would go on to sell more than 4 million copies, or that I’d go on to publish 42 more cookbooks. This book started a food revolution, and to this day it remains the 2nd bestselling hardback non-fiction book of all time. It is also a fitting legacy to Natasha that I’ve been able to help generations of babies develop healthy eating habits. Can you give an example of a dish you’ve created that’s successful to the palates of children? 54

It’s often about preparing foods in different ways. Children also often like to eat with their fingers and my signature Chicken and Apple Balls recipe is where it all began and helped encourage my fussy eating son to eat chicken for the first time – the grated apple gives a delicious natural sweetness which makes them appealing to younger children.

toddlers or families, contain straight forward advice. I also take on board new and emerging food trends, such as the rise of ‘superfoods’. It’s important to introduce babies and children to a world of flavor, and these on-trend ingredients are a hit with little ones if cooked in the right way.

What’s the most difficult thing about creating a menu that’s both suitable and enjoyable for children? The important thing is to introduce plenty of flavor, but keep it simple. Some of my best love dishes, can be prepared in under half an hour but they are super tasty. Without going to unnecessary lengths, it’s also good to try to make sure your child’s food not only tastes good but looks good too. Try making mini portions of meals in ramekins, or serve up chicken and colorful veggies on straws. Children love to be involved in the preparation of food, so you could even give them the cooked ingredients to thread onto the straw themselves. In fact, getting the kids having fun in the kitchen provides a great opportunity to teach them all kinds of invaluable skills – as well as the importance of eating a healthy, balanced diet.

How do you feel about your upcoming collaboration with Costa Coffee at The Taste of Q8? I have some exciting food plans in the pipeline with Costa Coffee Kuwait, and being involved in Taste of Q8 kick-starts an exciting year ahead! What I love about this event is that it’s designed for the whole family – and I’m all about family cooking! I’ll be on stage and at the cooking school on 16th and 17th March rustling up some fantastic nutritious meals that the kids will love, as well as adults. It’s not to be missed! Plus, I’ll be signing copies of my most popular books, including my Family Cookbook, Busy Mums Cookbook and my world-famous Complete Baby & Toddler Meal Planner. For me, this is also an opportunity to test out the amazing cuisine from Kuwait’s best restaurants. I love bringing new flavors into my meals, so I’ll be on the lookout for inspiration for my next culinary adventures!

Do you find that food trends have changed since the publishing of your first cookbook? A lot has changed since my very first book was published. Parents are definitely more food savvy, but feeding can be a daunting task when faced with different advice and opinions from family and friends, on parenting forums and social media, websites and magazines. That’s why I ensure that all of my books, whether designed for babies,

The Taste of Q8 will be held on March 16, 17 and 18 at The Boulevard in Salmiya, off of 5th Ring Road. Email info@Q8Productions.com or visit www.TheTasteofQ8.com for more information. Check out their Instagram at @TheTasteofQ8 for the latest updates.

All about The Glue and the bond it creates

By bazaar staff

When the mood strikes you to enjoy a cup of (insert preferred hot beverage here), it’s always nice to reach for your favorite mug; a vessel that embodies YOU and your personality. Or maybe you’re just into the kitschy idea of using personalized mugs as planters, penholders, or ironically as a utensil for other things like measuring when baking or mixing up mocktails! Whatever may tickle your fancy, we think that this local concept might be the very hub to select a pick-me-up to make your days a little brighter. Thought up by Middle School science teacher Lindsay and her Elementary school librarian pal Emily, The Glue is a small but mighty operation that produces the most original, entertaining and heartwarming mugs on this side of the Gulf. The co-founders of the concept, two Canadian expats, who happen to work at the same school, met teaching in Cairo nine years ago, and followed suit to form longtime homes in Kuwait. They describe their relationship to be one of sorority, and the idea behind The Glue embodies all that their friendship, their work, and their experiences in Kuwait stand for, and the endless cups of coffee sipped in between. And judging by their Instagram page, these mugs are what memories, bonds, and getting through the day consists of. 58

Where did the name “The Glue” come from? We’d love to tell you that there is an inspiring story behind the name “The Glue”, but truthfully, that isn’t the case. We talked about it once, we slept on it, Lindsay suggested it, and we knew it was perfect! It was exactly what we needed to describe our little passion project. The Glue is what holds people together. What was the inspiration behind The Glue’s inception? The Glue sort of just happened, and we knew it was meant to be. We were having coffee, just the two of us, catching up and de-stressing after work one day, when the idea came to us as if it had been there all along. We wondered if anyone would ever want to buy our mugs. And with the help of a wonderful friend and mentor, a whirlwind of events has led us to where we are today. We feel so fortunate to be where we are today! Where do you get the ideas from your slogans that you put on the mugs? We are fortunate to live in a community that inspires us. We draw on both our own experiences and those of our “Kuwait Family” to generate ideas. We get inspiration from the young fashionistas, the working parents, the cat-lovers, and all of the other amazing people that we come across from day-to-day. If something strikes us as wonderful, we design it, and if we both feel passionately about it, then it’s a winner! Are the designs on the mugs made by you, or are they customizable? Although we’ve received many requests for customized mugs, we’ve chosen to stay true to the designs that

speak to us. As best friends-turned sisters, we want The Glue to be fueled by the same passion that led to its creation. Are all the mugs a black and white scheme, or do patrons have choices with different colors and patterns? All of our mugs (and Instagram pictures!) are black and white, designed to simplify the bonding experience that happens with a hot drink in hand. The color comes from the conversations that start after sip number one! Do you have future plans for a physical location or stocking in a store in Kuwait? We are excited to share that our mugs will be available soon at Artspace! In addition to our usual collection, Artspace will feature some exclusive designs for the creative coffee drinker. Do you deliver worldwide, or is this a Kuwait exclusive operation? Although our mugs can be found in coffee and tea nooks around the globe, we don’t ship worldwide yet. However, we look forward to navigating these waters in the future. Any plans for other merchandise other than mugs? We feel passionate about our company’s mission and so any additional merchandise would have to fall in line with what we believe as a duo. We have ideas in our hearts, so stay tuned!

ELEVATING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

A new creative hub emerges at Elevation Burger Al-Seif

By bazaar staff

As we discovered last month, Elevation Burger empowers customers to make better food choices, and also empowers the community through locally sourcing its ingredients. We love the convenience that the Al-Seif branch offers: It’s open 24 hours, and you can dine-in or get your food to go. One thing that is recognized is that it’s never really healthy to simply eat and run, so Elevation Burger is also empowering customers to savor their meals. This area has now been turned into a welcoming space. You sincerely want to sit down here with friends or even by yourself. Relax, take some time over your food, enjoy the atmosphere. To help with this there has been a program of activities planned on the site with artists, singers, musicians and other entertainment. In doing so, Elevation Burger Al-Seif has become a bustling community hub to witness and experience. For those of you who have yet to discover it, as soon as you arrive you are greeted by the amusing sight of old-fashioned bicycles parked up in the corner. Overlooking this area is beautiful artwork by popular local talented artist Bruha Eve (Instagram @bruhaeveartworld) instructing you to “Grab Your Bike” encouraging both exercise and better food choices with Elevation Burger. As well as visual artists, local groups are supported whose sole purpose is to educate and celebrate the local community. Elevation Burger is very open to lending out the space and they generously share the beautiful Al-Seif location’s space with initiatives and creative performers for Saturday Brunch and evening events. Past performances at Elevation Burger Al-Seif include Rain (Instagram @ghxrainofficial) and Mahmoud Kamel (Instagram @7oudster), amongst many other talented acts. Recently bringing their talents with them has been local initiative ‘The Botanical Kid’ (Instagram @Goldencatcherskw)—a group dedicated to providing educational, fun activities for kids. Under the banner of “Plant a Life” children were given ample opportunity and space to decorate and swirl paint all over their chosen plant pot. They were then carefully shown how to pack the pot with the supplied earth and shown how to scatter or bury and water the seeds to have the greatest chance of seeing the seeds sprout and grow. In doing so, children can understand from the very beginning how to grow a flower or 62

a vegetable from a seed, and learn how to take care of it. In the future, these children have gained the proper tools to fully appreciate what it takes to source organic produce the same way that Elevation Burger carefully does. This also ensures that every Elevation offering is a better food option that both children and parents can trust. Organic breakfast is served between 4 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekends so you are guaranteed to be able to catch a breakfast/brunch serving if you are coming to a weekend event at the AlSeif Elevation Burger. The community garden is the perfect spot to sit down and enjoy some local talent, many who may not have had a chance to perform elsewhere before. It is also completely free to attend any of the events at Elevation Burger

Al-Seif! As for the yummy breakfast options on offer, you can still create your own breakfast bun or bowl according to your liking, while also sampling their newest addition of guacamole and organic egg whites to lighten up your breakfast even more! Amin Abdal (Instagram @xxmrfarixx) is a local musician who has reaped the benefit of searching out venues, events and gigs to play at, and today he’s helping other local acts by booking them for performances at the Al-Seif location. “I’ve been involved with booking acts before, but I was given a lot of freedom to design the program for Elevation Burger’s Al-Seif location. This was really important because very different performers can come and play. The kinds of performances you’ll see include some classic covers but the artists

are really encouraged to perform original pieces as well. What’s happened is this has become an organic hub for singers, a diwaniya of sorts.” Amin has booked a wide variety of bands for this spot, from newcomers before a crowd to the more seasoned performers such as Yousif Yaseen (Instagram @bu_yaseen) whose album Visions is out now. When asked about the Al-Seif performance area Yousif said, “It’s a step forward for public performances in Kuwait and great to see the independent music scene thriving in Kuwait.” The chance to perform with such a small crowd really allows both the performer and the audience to relate to one another. This way, audiences can form an even greater appreciation for the work that goes into

performing! Performers have to remember the words and music, make sure the amplifier, speakers and mics don’t create feedback, wear enough layers for a cool evening in Kuwait to keep warm, but not too warm, stay hydrated throughout and keep eye contact with the crowd! All of these are necessary elements to make for a successful show, and these are elements that Elevation Burger Kuwait want to shed light on—just like their perfectly curated organic breakfast menu. Trying something new is what singer songwriter and producer Fabrice (Instagram @fabriceroots) says the space is good for and he did so for his new Back to Roots album. “It’s a smaller crowd so you feel safe to try out new things, new songs. You can gauge the audience’s reaction better and it feels so positive and supportive.”

Elevation Burger customers also love this location. While the space has physically existed here for years, it has never been such a buzzing hive of activity, and today it arrives as a real community area. The space is accessible to everyone, from teenagers to families, who gather to appreciate all the great talents Kuwait has to offer. Witnessing people express themselves creatively is exciting, as these talents mark Kuwait’s new generation—it is a generation that is open to new experiences. The growth, and development of this creative scene is truly organic, with the empowering support of Elevation Burger Kuwait. Elevation Burger Al-Seif is located on the Arabian Gulf Road, across from the Al-Seif Palace in Kuwait City. Follow @elevationkw on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat for details. 63

DUBAI TO INTRODUCE DRONE TAXIS Say goodbye to traffic as you know it

By bazaar staff

A new era is dawning upon Dubai and it looks like something straight out of The Jetsons! Behold – the flying cars! Set to launch in July 2017, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) have announced that passenger drones will be buzzing over Dubai’s skyline! Having already tested, the autonomous aerial vehicles (AAV) has been exhibited at the World Government Summit in Dubai earlier in February of this year. The single passenger eight-rotor drone has already taken flight past the iconic Burj Al Arab and was deemed a success. Created in collaboration with Ehang, a Chinese Firm, the AAV Ehang 184 can fly for a maximum of 30 minutes. "The AAV exhibited at the summit is not just a model; it’s the real version that we have already experimented with in a flight over Dubai’s skies! The 64

RTA is making every effort to start the operation of the AAV in July 2017," stated Mr. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the RTA. The Ehang 184 features a touchscreen in front of the passenger seat with a map of all the preset destinations in the form of dots. Since the routes are automated, all the passenger needs to do is select the intended destination on the map. The vehicle will then start and take off before cruising to the set destination. Once there, the AAV will start to descend and land in its designated spot. Rest assured, a ground-based center will monitor and control the entire operation and the RTA promises that a standby system is in place in the event of a malfunction! With a maximum weight of 100kg, the AAV will be able to accommodate a single passenger with enough room for a small piece of hand luggage. "The AAV is designed to operate under all climatic conditions unless there is a thunderstorm. The vehicle is fitted with highly accurate sensors with a very lowerror threshold and can resist vibrations and extreme temperatures," said Mr. Al Tayer. "The Dubai Civil Aviation Authority was a partner in our trials defining the safety criteria required, issuing the permits for trial and inspecting the vehicle, and the RTA appreciates their contribution.”

And with Etisalat being the prime network provider, the AAV was able to establish flawless communication with ground control under a 4G data network. “[Etisalat] had also provided the support needed to ensure the continued communication between the AAV and the control center through M2M and LTE technologies," Mr. Al Tayer explained, adding that the successful operation of the AAV is a step towards the innovative and smart mobility solutions to reduce Dubai’s traffic congestion. “The trial run of the first AAV is in implementation of the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to transform Dubai into the smartest city in the world,” Mr. Al Tayer had added. “It is also part of the RTA’s endeavors to provide self-driving transport through engaging in the technological tests of self-driving vehicles in Dubai.” Because in the long run, Dubai aims to utilize various modes of self-driving transportation by 2030 under the Dubai Self-Driving Transport Strategy. SPRING ICONS AT H&M A STUDY OF X’S AND O’S WITH ANDREAS LÖWNSTAM

By bazaar staff

The Weeknd for H&M

Spring is finally upon us and Andreas Löwenstam, H&M Men’s Head of Design, envisioned a collection that embodies the new beginnings this season brings. Known as the Spring Icons, the collection mixes utility and streetwear with tailored lines to create an urban sophisticated look. This wardrobe of essentials was created with Abel Tesfaye [aka The Weeknd] in mind. “Abel’s taste and style perfectly fits the menswear mood of the season at H&M,” Andreas stated. “He has such a great eye for the little details that matter, and for mixing together updated men’s classics.”

how you combine your everyday wardrobe to fit all occasions – from work to gym and then straight to dinner with friends later in the evening. There are also more colors this season, going from just shades of black and gray to more daring colors like pink and sand, which feels new. What inspired the name of the collection – Spring Icons? With a spring season you almost every time feel that it is time to breath new air into your wardrobe and update it with new fashion pieces, right for the seasons. We wanted to call them icons, as they should feel more timeless and easy to pair with what you already have.

Selected and curated by The Weeknd, the pieces embody his own effortless style and incorporating his record label’s signature XO logo. We spoke to Andreas to find out more about this new collection [out on March 2nd] and what inspired it.

Does the collection embody a capsule wardrobe? It can be seen as that. Spring Icons Selected by The Weekend has a clear URBAN VIBE in the color palette black, broken white, utility green and beige. We have worked with his 'XO' logo to create a collection that is relevant to current fashion and corresponds with The Weeknd’s own personal style.

What was the inspiration for the collection’s colors and tones? We get really inspired by the man in the street,

Which pieces do you feel represent the Spring Icons and why? There’s a sharp urban look with Spring Icons

66

selected by The Weeknd. A golden beige cotton bomber has the perfect details, from its ribbed hem to the round terry black patch at the chest. Hoodies are crucial, with a flattened kangaroo pocket at the front, either in black or in olive. Wear over raw-edged jersey T-shirts that sit loose on the body and match with tailored pants, functionally updated with a drawstring waist. Outerwear is important, such as the motorbike jacket in pleather for a light modern feel, or the zip-up work shirt in faux suede. Meanwhile, refreshed tailoring brings clarity and sharpness, like mandarin collar cotton shirts, a semi-constructed blazer that’s the perfect outer layer, or a lightweight doublebreasted belted spring coat that's the sharpest finishing touch. What does The Weeknd bring to this collection? His impeccable sense of style. I was nervous meeting him at first and present the collection, but he took one look and said that he thought we had really nailed it with the collection. You can find the Spring Icons selected by The Weeknd collection at all H&M Stores that carry menswear starting March 2nd. For more information, follow H&M on Facebook and Instagram @HM.

VIGNETTES FROM INDIA ART FAIR

From Souza to Guevara, the India Art Fair was an art lover's dream come true By Deepa Pant

From luminaries of the art world to the exciting emerging talent, it had it all. India Art Fair returned for its ninth edition this year, featuring over 70 exhibitors from 23 countries, bringing their choicest selections for you to browse, buy and enjoy. The fair was held in New Delhi from 2-5 February, and had plenty to offer to the modern and contemporary art lovers. The success of the India Art Fair can be attributed to its astonishing selection of intoxicating art, sculptures, installations, and the privilege of seeing such a range under one roof. The uncontested star of the show was Anila Quayyum Agha, a Pakistani-American artist, represented by Aicon Gallery, New York. She won accolades for her luminous installation, titled All the 68

Flowers are for Me. It consisted of a laser-cut red lacquered stainless steel and bulb. When lit from the inside, it cast stunning shadows in the exhibition area. The artist says her impressions are drawn from geometrical patterning in Islamic sacred spaces and the Alhambra. A quirky work titled Peace Makers II by Nepalese artist Sunil Sigdel was a tongue-in-cheek comment on the present day political scenario. It featured Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un in Buddhist imagery. A piece that had many talking was Argentinian artist Alberto Echegaray Guevara's debut art installation, Moneyball. It featured a crystal sphere filled with $1 million - shredded. The large-scale art project was a fascinating observation of modern society's complicated relationship with money. A wonderfully ambitious site-specific project

based on the concept of nostalgia and memories, titled Memoir Bar was by visual artists Jiten Thukral and Sumir Tagra. Visitors were asked to write down a memory on paper, which was then shredded and made into a tile. The idea was to capture and preserve memory in an object. One signature element at the fair was a striking collection of artworks by the bigwigs such as RN Tagore, FN Souza, SH Raza, MF Husain and Amrita Shergil to name a few. The fair had an impressive line-up of international delegates, curators and directors from top-notch institutions such as The Met, MoMA, Tate, Guggenheim and Palais de Tokyo to name a few. Founded in 2008, India Art Fair is one of South Asia's leading platform for modern and contemporary art.

VAN BOOM UNMASKED By Ashley Alleluya

When our team first encountered Van Boom at his show in December, we were captivated by his music and the person behind this mask. My first write-up on him must have betrayed the intrigue, because soon after, Van Boom agreed to meet with us and speak about the image he had crafted. Van Boom is already waiting for us when we arrive with his mask on but courteous when we apologize for being late. For someone whose music has a confident, extroverted sound, he is shy at first, but quickly warms up once we discuss his work. We begin with his musical origins, and Van Boom credits the chaos and turmoil of the world around him. “The past three years were a difficult time with school, forced jobs, watching my dad flip through the news about distressing times for the world and countries like Palestine and Syria shook me up,” he recalls. “The character of Van Boom is a response to this, a personality cultivated from the subconscious who converts the darkness into positivity through music. I noticed that our brothers in these troubled areas were mostly executed wearing masks that were mostly black. This helped me conceive the look of Van Boom’s pink mask – a positive color,” he adds. Van Boom then spent the next two years finding his identity as an artist and honing his technical skill and emotional range to compile his debut album. Skrillex and iiWaves were inspirations and Van Boom wanted to use his work similarly – to give out his message to the public, available to all but possibly only understood by a few. Production of the first album took two years, from learning the technique to recording samples on completed tracks. When I ask him for his favorite track from the album, he struggles with the answer for a second, going with a diplomatic reply on his first try. Van Boom quickly amends his answer and names “The Void” as the one that holds meaning to him. “This track has a sample I recorded of a friend’s voice on the day we first met,” he reminisces. As he elaborates, we discover that Van Boom has imbibed every person who has made an impact on him into his tracks. “At one point, I did not have any friends, so I spent time by myself with my music,” he confides. However, he found himself gravitating towards the relentlessly creative people around Kuwait, those who were constantly working on their craft and giving back to the community that shaped their identities. Farah, or xxMantras, is a poet whose words and cadence caught Van Boom’s fancy a few months ago. Another person Van Boom holds close to his heart is photographer Aziz Mutawa. “I met him at the Contemporary Art Platform and instantly became a fan of his work,” Van Boom tells me. “For being the generous person he is and for supporting my music, Aziz will always be special to me,” he shares. According to Van Boom, his only musical training includes learning the drums as a child “just to make some noise”, but he seems to have quickly graduated 70

to music production. From discovering music in everyday sounds to buying his own equipment, Van Boom has already put the positive feedback for the first album behind him and is deeply immersed in album number two. A believer of the magic of sound, Van Boom pours into his work the music of his surroundings. “Sounds are endless and you can create so many original themes from the environment around you – and I always want to be original, never copy anyone,” he gushes. While his first album toyed with distortions – both audio and visual – in everyday sounds, his second album aims to fuse two very polarizing sound families – Kuwaiti folk music and electronica. “I want to continue introducing sounds into Kuwait that begin a new movement within the community.” I ask him about his plans for the immediate future – does he see himself achieving the level of success that his inspiration, Skrillex, comfortably thrives in? “If I could, I would be so happy,” he laughs. “I want to be

able to take my work to the crowds in Dubai, London, Los Angeles and Amsterdam someday”. For now, though, he seems perfectly content making music and collaborating with those artists interested in turning his new album into a project that introduces to Kuwait “something they haven’t heard before.”

MANA’EESH MADE BETTER

Taking breakfast, lunch, and dinner to a whole new level at Mana’eesh Inc

By bazaar staff

What’s better than indulging in an alltime favorite classic meal for breakfast, lunch, or dinner? Mana’eesh is one of the oldest food traditions to date. For centuries, people have been enjoying the flatbreadbased food, which is essentially a meal covering all four food groups in one sitting! But this little eatery is taking the classic mana’eesh to new heights, offering gourmet and bespoke experiences that are made to share, enjoy, and cherish the historical Levantine food in a different light. Tucked within the upper corner of 4th Ring Road's Al-Bahar Shopping Center, this central hub is the perfect spot to grab a mouthwatering manou’sheh (singular) for a quick and easy, yet extremely satisfying meal. While you also have the option for just-as-fresh delivery through Carriage, the ambiance of the restaurant alone makes it worth visiting. It’s quiet and small, yet welcoming, with modern, simplistic décor and hanging testimonials surrounding the room to give you inspiration and an education on what you’ll be enjoying. It’s also the perfect setting to enjoy your food in peace with a stream of gorgeous light flooding the floor-to-ceiling windows adorning the bar tables and a spectacular view of the hustle and bustle of Kuwait’s urban flow. Additional tables are scattered throughout the room, built in a way to connect to others depending on how big the group of people you’re dining with is. Each table features a hollowed-out ditch modeled to fit the shape of the freshly made mana’eesh perfectly, serving as a built-in shelter to place your manou’sheh. With only a piece of hygienic food wrapping paper placed underneath your pre-sliced manou’sheh, there’s no need to worry about spillage, dirty plates or waste with utensils! (However, if you insist on enjoying this traditionally handheld food with a fork and knife, the staff will happily oblige within your request.) Talk about efficiency, and eco-friendliness! Now let’s talk about the best part: the mana’eesh. Mana’eesh Inc prides itself in handcrafting each manou’sheh from scratch, and baking it to order. None of their ingredients are ever frozen, and with each bite, freshness and quality exude. The dough used to make the mana’eesh is executed in a specific way designed to make the base delightfully fluffy and tender. Made daily in the Mana’eesh Inc, it is hand-rolled perfection, and serves as the premium base that is set to make all your mana’eesh dreams come true. 74

So, how is your mana’eesh going to be made? There are limitless possibilities on their menu, which is divided into two sections: Make Your Own, and Our Favorites. Making your own means endless options from protein to veggies and additional toppings, and they even promote a “why have one when you can have two?” ethos, giving you the choice to bespoke a manou’sheh half-and-half style, with different toppings meeting down the middle. If you’re short on ideas and would rather opt for one of their favorites, they have a selection of stellar combinations, four of which we’ve tried. The Za’atar and Bulgari mana’eesh, topped with cherry tomatoes and Bulgarian feta cheese, then baked to perfection in Mana’eesh Inc’s specialty electric oven was hands down, as a loyal za’atar enthusiast, my favorite. There’s something about

the way quality Palestinian za’atar is spread on dough to make mana’eesh that just hits the spot, and coupled with piping hot cherry tomato that oozes the right amount of tanginess, adding to the earthy flavor. Another favorite we tried was za’atar’s preferred cheesy counterpart, a simple halloum mana’eesh, made with hand-shredded halloumi cheese and topped with fresh za’atar leaves after being baked. If you’ve never had the extreme pleasure of trying fresh za’atar, then this is a combination I highly recommend. All of you carnivores at heart will appreciate this one: they have meaty options, with the famous “lahmajeen” base, (otherwise labeled on their menu as “meat”), sprinkled with fresh pomegranate gems on top for maximum indulgence. Pro tip: Mana’eesh Inc gives you the

option of sprinkling a little something on top of your finished product for extra seasoning – ask to get some sumac spice on there and you won’t regret it. And one of the most innovative creations they had on offer for us to sample? A Halloum and Egg manou’sheh topped with mixed peppers! Truly the breakfast of champions, the egg melted into the halloumi cheese perfectly, egg-enthusiasts will find this incredibly pleasing. Other than handcrafted mana’eesh, Mana’eesh Inc’s menu offers lovely, light salads to whet your appetites, and offer you satisfaction by making use of the Levant’s fresh mixtures of excellent produce to create a wonderfully balanced meal. Help yourself to a Levant Salad, with Bulgari Cheese: the Eastern Mediterranean answer to the infamous Greek

Salad, traditional Levantine Tabbouleh salad, or every household’s favorite, a Fattoush salad. All of these great salads truly are the perfect counterpart to your mana’eesh. Another great appetizer is the addictive mini pita bread bites served with their delicious labneh or homemade hummus. The bread bites, fluffy and light, are a clear product of their signature dough, and provide the perfect consistency for dipping. These bread bites are also used as a base for their sole dessert, Ushta Honey Bites. Made with the creamiest scoops of fresh ushta cream placed delicately atop each fluffly piece of bread, drizzled with organic honey and dusted with pistachio, these bites serve as the ideal dessert to end your Mana’eesh experience on a sweet and authentic note.

Mana’eesh Inc strives to bring something completely different to Kuwait. This original concept brings a long-loved tradition to gourmet levels and uses only the best ingredients to make their mana’eesh come alive. From pure Palestinian za’atar and sumac, Lebanese dairy products like cheese, labneh and laban ayran buttermilk drinks, to the local produce used as toppings and in their salads, you know that every bite embraces history, quality and freshness that will only make you love traditional mana’eesh even more. Friday morning breakfast, anyone?

Mana’eesh Inc is located in Al Bahar Shopping Center, on Tunis Street in Hawalli. Get your mana’eesh delivered through Carriage. Follow them on Instagram @mana’eeshinc. 75

BIANCA SUTU

Meet the modelling entrepreneur

By bazaar staff

One of the many exciting things about Kuwait is the sheer number of opportunities there are here for the focused entrepreneur. Landing on Kuwait’s shores in 2012 the Transylvanian born model, Claudia Bianca Sutu known as Bianca, found that she was able to utilize her decade long fashion experience by collaborating on various shoots with Kuwait-based photographer Romeo Debies, founder of Romeo Productions. Combining her experience, creative inclinations and organizational capabilities, Bianca honed her skills further as an Art Director. While working with other models on set, Bianca realized that there is a whole other valuable application to her experience and knowledge of the fashion business in Kuwait and the UAE. As founder, CEO and Creative Director of CBS MODEL MANAGEMENT, she now scouts and develops models from all around the world for bigname luxury brands in the Middle Eastern market. Eager to learn more, Bianca takes the time to talk to us during a brief break from an editorial shoot in Europe. What inspired this career path? Being a creative person has always been in me, ever since I was a child. I always felt a taste for beauty, uniqueness and design. The only constant thing that I would do throughout my childhood, was either to be in front of the mirror or in front of the camera. I was fascinated by the idea of giving life to different characters with different stories. This is what eventually brought me to Theatre Academy later on. I also studied management and marketing, so in a way, you could say I was developing tools to bring a pragmatic foundation to my childhood dreams. What brought you to the Middle East and why did you choose to settle down in Kuwait? I was recruited via a head hunting recruitment agency and I was given an offer to relocate to Kuwait. I arrived in the Middle East with a job, but I understood very quickly that I wanted to be independent and work for myself. After only three months, I planned out how I could combine my strongest passions; fashion and advertising. Soon I was collaborating as an Art Director for different, very influential shoots and TVCs in the region with Romeo Productions. I was taking care of project casting management for big clients in the region such as Jazeera Airlines, Zain, Viva and Ikea. Explain the journey from being in front of the camera 78

as a model to organizing things behind the camera. How did it all happen? I was in front of the camera for more than 10 years; my first contract was in Milan and then Paris and Barcelona. I wanted to understand the world behind the camera as well. After I founded CBS MODEL MANAGEMENT, I felt an urge to give shape to my artistic vision. I am very involved in creating the models’ portfolios and creating mood boards and artistic vision for the shoots. How do you find being a foreign woman in business in the Middle East? Being a business woman here is different than in Europe, one of the reasons might be the fact that women are treated with more respect in the Middle East, as far as I’ve seen. Building the business was challenging and rewarding at the same time, since I had the opportunity to work through CBS MODEL MANAGEMENT with great clients such as Chanel, Ingie Paris, Etoile Boutique and Ralph Lauren, to name just a few. I also help in organizing fund raising charity events such as the Mentor Arabia Gala. This is a high-caliber gala where all the funds raised to support for child sufferers of cancer in Lebanon. I find it is a very big opportunity, to be a business woman here. How many (and which) nationalities of models do you have on your books and how do you find them? We have an impressive number of models and the nationalities range from US, UK, France, The

Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Ukraine, Romania, Poland and South Africa. The models we have in our portfolio have been scouted by our international talent scouts placed in Romania, Ukraine, Germany or The Netherlands or simply the models have found us via our social media accounts. What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a model in the Middle East? It is a different market in the Middle East, you have to understand that and adapt to it. It is very important knowing how to choose what is best for you, be ready to embark on a beautiful adventure where no two days are alike, be open to learn daily from the people you work with and don’t take yourself too seriously, stay humble and down to earth. MEET LUCID

An Aspiring Tesla Competitor Selling A $100K "Private Jet On Wheels"

By Neal Ungerleider

In a past life, Peter Rawlinson developed the Tesla Model S, one of the most iconic cars of the 2010s. These days, he's taking on quite a different role: chief technology officer of Lucid Motors, an aspiring Tesla competitor. Lucid’s prototype vehicle is the Lucid Air, which is billed in marketing materials as a "private jet on wheels" and will set you back more than $100,000 (KD 30,552). At a Los Angeles promotional event for the vehicle last February, Rawlinson showed off its highlights—acceleration that jumped from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds, two electric motors with 1,000 horsepower, fully reclinable back seats, tablets, and touchscreens, an Alexa-style voice control system, noise-canceling technology inside the cabin, and a host of LIDAR and radar sensors for future autonomous driving opportunities. Rawlinson boasted about the car’s technology and the company’s plans to get vehicles to customers starting in 2019. Lucid is currently accepting refundable deposits for the Air ranging from $2,500 (KD 763) to $25,000 (KD 7,638). The audience at the L.A. event consisted of a large number of Tesla and 80

electric car enthusiasts (at least two guests cracked jokes about the parking lot being "a sea of Teslas") along with media and industry-watchers. Until late last year, Lucid was known as Atieva, a company that got its start manufacturing batteries for electric buses and drivetrains. According to the Guardian’s Mark Harris, two Chinese firms purchased an almost $100 million (KD 30.5 million) stake in Lucid: state-owned automaker Beijing Automotive Industry Holding (BAIC) and LeEco, which made its own splashy introduction to the U.S. market in late 2016. This past October, the company rebranded as Lucid after Recode obtained public documents with details of their new car. Other investors in the company include Venture Rockefeller and Mitsui & Co. As for Lucid, it's following the Tesla playbook by premiering a high-end electric car as its initial model. The company's top brass includes more than its fair share of ex-Teslaites. In addition to Rawlinson, cofounder Bernard Tse (who departed the company in 2015) is a former Tesla VP, and its heads of sales, marketing, and supply chain are all Tesla veterans. Their engineering team includes many former Tesla employees as well. The Lucid Air makes for an exceedingly fun test drive. As I rode in an engineering prototype as a

passenger, the car accelerated to 50 miles per hour almost as soon as the driver stepped on the gas pedal. It flawlessly made hairpin turns in a parking garage, and the inside was amazingly roomy—for an electric car, at least. Even though this was a prototype in camouflage with many of the car’s passenger bells and whistles stripped out, the sheer space the interior offered was impressive. Still, Lucid faces an uphill climb: Tesla has a lock on the luxury electric car market in the United States, and doubters have to look no further than the current troubles of Faraday Future (which has investors in common with Lucid and also its share of ex-Tesla employees) to see what can go wrong for electric car startups. Lucid has to reassure customers that they will have their vehicles in 2019, and that there will be a robust charging network in place—and that’s just for starters. According to Lucid, the company plans to build a $700 million (KD 213.8 million) manufacturing plant in Arizona, which will begin production in 2018. Lucid also announced a battery partnership with Samsung this past December. Some 255 units are planned for customer sale in 2019, with the highest-end version, the "launch edition," selling for approximately $165,000 (KD 50,412).

PRINCESS REEMA BINT BANDAR AL-SAUD Bringing people together, one mission at a time

By Lydia Dishman

A leading advocate for Saudi women, Princess Reema has learned how to make a difference without alienating people, namely women. Read on to see the ways this strong role model has contributed towards the nation’s future, by bringing its citizens together rather than keeping them apart. BE THE FIRST DOMINO Princess Reema is heading Saudi Arabia's effort to get women involved in sports and exercise, which is both a health initiative (Saudi women have high rates of obesity and diabetes) and part of a mission to diversify the oil-focused economy. Even developing one sport can have a big impact. Right now, in Riyadh, there is just one small retail chain dedicated to serious sports bikes. "My role would be to look at bicycling--or any sport--and say, 'How do we expand this?' We will work with [government agencies] and young entrepreneurs. It's not just 82

the store that sells the bicycle. You need the individual who is repairing [bikes]. You will [also attract] the store that sells bicycling clothing, and hopefully a bicycle magazine in Arabic. My job is to make all the dominoes fall. But first, I have to set them up." MAKE YOURSELF HEARD--AND ALSO LISTEN Because of strict religious codes and a paucity of women in the workplace, Princess Reema often deals with men who've rarely or never been in meetings with women. That can work to her advantage. "Because they're so uncomfortable with it, they listen. That's actually awkward. I'll say, 'I don't know if I'm right. I'm just voicing an opinion. Feel free to [disagree].' The other awkward thing is Saudi is a classist society, so I walk in with a title and that makes people want to be quiet. That's not healthy. I have to repeat, 'If we're colleagues, then we're equals, and if we're equals, we all have a say.' We're working toward the same objective. It's not that I want resistance--just feedback."

TRY DIPLOMACY As a former CEO of a major Saudi retailer and the founder of the social enterprise Alf Khair, Princess Reema has helped women enter the workforce and take control of their own health care. But she's always been careful not to push too hard. As an example, she mentions Saudi laws that assign every woman a male relative to be her "guardian." Though she believes guardianship to be outdated, she's thought carefully about what might change it. "I'm never an advocate for aggressive campaigns. I don't agree with that methodology, even if the message is correct. The issue is, how do you explain to a community of men who historically are taking care of you that you don't need them in the same way? You could do it aggressively, or you could say, 'Thank you for the time and care you've given me. I appreciate it. But I'm evolving, and let me show you what I can do.' I don't want to minimize it, because it is so difficult for many women. But there's a better way to handle it."

CULINARY EXCELLENCE

A chat with Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa’s Executive Chef Serkan Yelkenbasan

By bazaar staff

We’re no strangers to Kuwait’s Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa’s incredible gastronomic offerings and the wonderful people behind them. And with their newest team member, the award winning Executive Chef Serkan Yelkenbasan, we can’t wait to sample his work! Trained under Michelin Star Chefs, Chef Serkan is no stranger to creating mouthwatering dishes with flawless presentation and style. We sat down with him for a quick one-on-one, to get to know the man behind the chef’s whites a little better. When did your passion for the culinary arts begin, and what inspired you to become a chef? My inspiration was my grandfather. He owned a small restaurant and I was always fascinated by his passion for food, so I started to work in his restaurant by preparing Turkish meatballs (Kofte) when I was 9-years-old. Where were you based before coming to Kuwait? Two years in the United Arab Emirates (Sharjah, Dubai) and 12 years in London. From living and working in the UK as well as the Emirates, can you share with us some of your favorite experiences? I had the pleasure of cooking for Prince Charles at the History Museum in London. Also, one of my highlights was joining the opening of the first 5-star hotel and first Starwood property in Sharjah where I had the opportunity to cook for the Ruler of Sharjah at various events. As the Executive Chef at Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa, what are your current responsibilities? My ultimate goal is to maintain the high standards of food quality in all the dining outlets at the resort. I also plan and direct the culinary activities according to the guests’ profiles in order to exceed their expectations and meet the business demands. Currently, I lead a team of 150 colleagues in culinary and oversee all the Food & Beverage activities for the hotel’s seven restaurants, lounges and cafés. With the support of my team, I lead large number of banqueting operations consisting of up to 2500 guests. While maintaining a strong leadership, it’s my responsibility to make sure the culinary department exceeds the financial and operational targets. In doing so, I create various menus through staying up-to-date with the latest trends 84

in the culinary world to enhance our menus and provide our guests with unique and memorable experiences. Can you tell us a little bit more about your vision for the various dining outlets at the Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa? Jumeirah Restaurants are renowned for their great quality of food and creative cuisine, but most of all for choice. From casual family-friendly dining and signature restaurants, to relaxing lounges and cafés, we offer an unmatched array of unique Food & Beverage outlets with a unique approach to service. Therefore, we believe in the concept that each and every guest deserves a personalized gastronomic experience at every visit.

What is your favorite part of the job? My favorite part of the job is when the result of hard work and preparation translates into smiles on our guests’ faces while they enjoy their dining experiences with us. I also take great pride in working with my team, their passion and positive energy is very rewarding. In your mind, what is a must-try culinary experience that our readers would enjoy at Jumeirah? Our award winning restaurants offer many options that satisfy the tastes of all our guests. Personally, I recommend the popular themed nights in our allday dining restaurant Garden Café. Each month, we introduce a themed night. Currently, we have Turkish Nights every Monday, Southern American Barbeque Nights every Wednesday and Indian

Nights every Thursday. We are very diverse in our culinary offerings and there are always exciting cuisines to try out. Working with an extensive team that includes fellow chefs and staff can be challenging. How do you keep your team at Jumeirah motivated? I have a team of 150 colleagues coming from different nationalities and speaking various languages, however kitchen language is universal. We work as a team and act as a team so we motivate each other by continuously researching new ideas that also challenge us to be the best at what we do. Name three ingredients you couldn't live without in the kitchen.

Passion, attention to detail and teamwork. What do you think are some of the most prominent food trends this year? Small corner restaurants that offer genuine and simple food. Food trucks are popular and high quality fast food options are increasing in their popularity. Do you have any special offers for Mother’s Day? This year, we offer mothers complimentary meals for each table of four persons and above when they book in any of our restaurants on March 21st. What do you think of living in Kuwait so far? Have you sampled the local cuisine?

I enjoy living and working in Kuwait. I managed a Kuwaiti fine-dining restaurant during my stay in Dubai so I am familiar with the cuisine and love the local food.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO KEEP YOUR DATA PRIVATE WHEN CROSSING THE BORDER By Steven Melendez

Anyone who has traveled internationally knows the drill: body scans, bag searches, and lots of questions. But there's something else U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers increasingly want to scour: your cell phone. Custom officials are taking advantage of legal uncertainties that civil liberties advocates say provide limited options for travelers to keep their devices and data private. That means everything on your phone— from financial info to potentially embarrassing photos—can land in the government's hands. The policy pre-dates the controversial travel restrictions President Donald Trump ordered , and applies to U.S. citizens and international visitors alike. In fact, the Florida chapter of the Council on Islamic-American Relations filed a complaint the week before Trump’s inauguration after reports of cellphone searches and demands for social media handles. And last July, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal said that federal officials demanded to inspect phones she was carrying into the country, before relenting when she said they belonged to the newspaper. For travelers looking to keep their personal or business data private, that leaves a few options: - Travel with "burner" phones and laptops only loaded with files you absolutely need for your trip. - Keep private data in the cloud, not on your devices. - Use a secure deletion tool to wipe sensitive data from your phone and laptop before passing through customs. - Lock and encrypt your phone before crossing the border, though officers may urge you to unlock it or reveal your passwords. Digital inspections are unlikely to go away any time soon, experts say. "This issue of device searches at the border and asking for social media information was starting to happen under Obama," says Sophia Cope, a staff attorney at the Electronic Freedom Foundation. She predicts the searches may intensify under Trump. Customs officers have long had wide leeway to search people’s possessions after they enter the U.S.; usually in a hunt for contraband, including guns and drugs, says Nathan Wessler, a staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project. U.S. border officials have generally interpreted those rules to also allow warrantless searches of digital devices. 86

In 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously that without a warrant, police generally can’t search a suspect’s cellphone when they’re taken into custody, despite established rules allowing some physical warrantless searches during an arrest. There's no similar Supreme Court case ruling one way or another about searching travelers entering the country. A few federal courts have allowed unrestricted manual searches while requiring at least some "reasonable suspicion" before doing more intensive forensic exams of a phone’s memory, but many haven’t addressed the question at all, says Wessler. "Most federal courts have yet to weigh in on this, so in most parts of the country there’s no binding legal authority on the question," he says. In practice, this means people traveling into the country should assume they have limited legal recourse to stop device searches, says Cope. How people handle that will depend on a number of factors. Some travelers without much personal information on their phones may be unconcerned, while others might encrypt their devices and refuse to disclose their passwords. That, though, can be more of a risk for noncitizens, who can be denied entry with a fair degree of latitude, Cope cautions.

There’s no one-size-fits-all option, after all. Using travel-only phones and laptops, or keeping files in the cloud may work well for some, but those solutions rely on either technical sophistication or disposable funds, and assume travelers don’t actually need to keep private data on their equipment while they travel. Other travelers might prefer to encrypt and lock their phones or laptops, though it’s not entirely clear which encryption tools authorities can defeat—officials reportedly paid a security company for a tool to break into the San Bernardino shooting suspect’s iPhone, for instance, and it’s possible federal officials have paid for similar keys to other popular phones and computers. Travelers should also consider that officials may request their pass codes. Refusing can lead to lengthy questioning sessions, seizure of the devices, and for non-citizens it can heighten the risk of being denied entry. "Folks should not use their thumbprint to unlock their phones—that should be disabled" when traveling she warns, since it can be easier legally and practically to obtain a fingerprint than a password. "If a border agent really wanted to be a jerk, they could grab your hand and place your thumb on your phone."

THE TYRANNY OF WHAT WAS

By Dr Susannah-Joy Schuilenberg

As a consequence of a conscious and deliberate decision to change my lifestyle and become healthy, I took up running in January 2013. To my surprise, I loved it and I was hooked. Over the next three years I trained enough to take part in two sprint triathlons, the March for Honour, a halfmarathon, and a lot of road and trail races around the world. I’m no elite athlete, but the process of training, challenging myself to improve, and the act of racing kept me engaged in running, and resulted in a lot of satisfaction for me.. Then last May, I had to stop running due to a health condition that required many months to resolve. Though I was able to continue cycling, I couldn’t run. I gained some weight. I grumbled. I tried a run in September thinking maybe the doctor was wrong. He wasn’t. So I waited, grumbling. In January I was finally given permission to take up running again, IF (and this was heavily emphasized) I could ease into running gradually with lots of recovery time. ‘Sure. No problem,’ I said. I decided to do the Couch to 5K (C25K) program that I had done when I first started running. I enjoyed that, and the process seemed painless and would certainly be gradual enough to keep the doctor happy. Ha. This has been one of the most difficult, 88

discipline-required things I have ever done. These runs are awful. I am required to alternate walking (which I hate) with “a slow easy jog” for 30 minutes at a time. I find myself mentally shrieking, at myself. I should: Go faster…go farther…have better form… not be so lame…not hurt so much …. and on and on and on. The problem is that I am constantly comparing now to what was then. I’m remembering in my head how fast I was. How easy it seemed. How far I could run. The consequence is a sense of futility and discouragement now. The tyranny of remembering what was got in the way of what is. I’m running again so the health problem is finished. Positive. I’m good on the stamina because I was able to cycle when I couldn’t run. Positive. I’ve got time to build up my form again before the first race. Positive. I’m so freaking slow! Negative. That’s all that matters, apparently, because that one thought outweighs everything else about running. Everything. The tyranny of what was …even when it wasn’t. We actually remember things inaccurately, and the memories of the past are coloured and modified by how we feel NOW as we recall those experiences. My memories of running have suddenly become mythically positive, and running now, epically negative. There is no balance, past or present. Truthfully, it wasn’t all good back then. If I actually think about it, I was constantly sore, and often grumbled about my run times, believing for all the training I was doing, and how sore I was, that my stopwatch ought to say something so much better than it did. I’m talking about running, but the truth is,

we do this to ourselves with nearly everything. Relationships, work, hobbies, sports, whatever. This poor thinking habit can rob us of joy and significantly impact quality of life. If we spend our lives thinking about how something was done in the past, we completely miss the opportunity to craft something entirely new and appropriate to now. There’s no way to be happy when habitual comparison to the past robs us of the moments of satisfaction in the present. We humans seem to live, almost by default, with a feeling of regret. I mean we have an ability to remember the past and to lament or grieve something we can no longer influence or change. The feelings we experience can be every bit as powerful – positive or painful – as we felt at the time. While this is a pleasant thing many times, other times, this phenomenon can cause great distress. If you’d like to improve your quality of life, celebrate the moments as they happen and leave the past where it belongs. Those experiences and accomplishments are good historical markers which prove that we have done things. "I have an almost complete disregard of precedent, and a faith in the possibility of something better. It irritates me to be told how things have always been done. I defy the tyranny of precedent. I go for anything new that might improve the past." -Clara Barton

HOW TO QUIT YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION Even if it's part of your job By Gwen Moran

Conventional wisdom says that Max Soni should be all over social media. He's the founder of DotComSEO, a digital marketing and search engine optimization company that, among other things, tells clients how to use social media. So it stands to reason that Soni should have a robust following on many platforms. But that’s not the case. Roughly 18 months ago, he logged off. He may log on to one of his profiles to check out a new platform feature when it’s rolled out, but otherwise, he’s not liking, tweeting, posting, or even peeking at social media. "I found it was really polarizing," Soni says. "The anonymity social media affords you makes it so people are more inclined to say drastic things." He found that the negativity was affecting him— some of the things strangers said would even stick in his head, he says—so he decided he was done. And the result has been remarkable, he says. In addition to feeling more positive overall, he says that thoughts previously taken up by something he read online were released. It gave him additional time and headspace to devote to new ideas and ventures. DO YOU REALLY NEED SOCIAL MEDIA? "It's widely accepted that in creative fields, social media followers are the key to getting your work noticed," says Cal Newport, associate professor of computer science at Georgetown University, and author of Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World. "This is overblown. Good work gets noticed, even if you didn't send a tweet about it; bad work is ignored, even if you sent thousands. I can't tell you how many different artists and writers, for example, have written me to talk about how leaving social media had zero impact on their sales and huge impact on their well-being," Newport says. THE BENEFITS OF LOGGING OFF Not ready to go cold turkey? Even disconnecting for a short time has benefits. "Being away for a month allows the brain time to create new neural pathways, which means new behaviors and routines begin to replace old ones," says Sanam Hafeez, a faculty member at Columbia University, in a Fast Company post. "So if you typically reached for your phone when you woke up to check Facebook, after 30 days, you would have adopted a new ritual, which is the new normal." 90

In a world where part of your value is the number of followers, likes, and other engagement you have on social media, it’s tough to imagine how you can live without it. However, streams of fake news, argumentative posters, and photos of OPM (other people’s meals), social media sites can range from being a huge time-suck to having ill effects on your mental health. Newport argues that, for most people, there are better ways to spend your time. If you’re feeling like social media is taking up too much time or energy—or if you just want to quit—try these steps. Take the apps off your phone. "These apps are highly engineered to be addictive, and your phone keeps them readily available at all points," Newport says. If you simply remove them from your phone, you can still access the platform on your laptop or desktop, but you’re not carrying around the constant temptation to check in. Set ground rules. If you are in a business that requires you to use social media, set boundaries based on those needs, says time management and efficiency consultant Helene Segura, author of The Inefficiency Assassin: Time Management

Tactics for Working Smarter, Not Harder. Set aside a specific time of day and time limit to handle your social media tasks, then log off. Once you experiment with the best time of day and the best amount of time to spend, you may be motivated to cut back in other areas. Find work-arounds, if you must. Sometimes your work role requires you to be on social media from time to time. But you can find solutions that don’t plunge you down the rabbit hole. Colonna strictly limits his time on social media to theater company business. While he removed the social media platform app, Soni keeps Facebook’s Messenger app on his phone so he can text everyone with whom he’s connected on the platform, making it easy to connect. Gather reinforcements. You might have to wean yourself off of social media in increments. First, cut back to checking at certain times of day, then scale back those times until you’ve kicked your habit, Segura suggests. Tell others about the transition and the best ways to get in touch with you. And, if you have trouble staying off, use reinforcements like Freedom or Anti-Social.

FOUR CREATIVE WAYS TO LAND FREELANCE WORK Landing gig work doesn't get easier than this! By Anne Loehr

According to a recent study by Upwork and the Freelancers Union, the most common places for freelancers to pick up work are friends and family (36%), professional contacts (35%), and online job platforms (29%) like Upwork, Freelancer.com, Guru, and even Craigslist. This breakdown spells trouble for some. If you can hire someone to transcribe an interview for $3 (KD 0.920) an hour, you aren’t giving that contract to a freelancer charging $15 (KD 4.5) So where else can freelancers find work? Just ask these guys, who picked up gigs in some unexpected places. 1. ADVERTISE IN REAL TIME If you’re a freelancer, chances are you’ve sat at coffee shops with your nose in your laptop. So why not let passersby know exactly what you’re doing and that you’re available for hire? Shayla Price says she landed a gig by creating and placing a makeshift placard saying "freelance writer" in front of her computer while working at Starbucks and other public places. Price says she’s received a few inquiries every time she whips out the placard. 2. EMAIL THE CEO DIRECTLY "I've been obsessed with a large, multinational 92

hair care brand for many years now," says Termeh Mazhari, "so when I became a freelancer, I decided to just email the CEO directly." Going straight to the source may sound like a waste of time—execs usually aren’t the ones hiring contractors. But in Mazhari’s case, it paid off. "I told her about myself and the value I could bring to the company, and to my great surprise her assistant wrote me back and arranged a meeting with the CEO at their posh Manhattan office!" What’s more, Mazhari landed more than just a tiny one-off project this way. "I ended up getting a year-long consulting gig with the brand, even though they already had a large internal PR team as well as multiple external agencies working with them." 3. HUSTLE FOR FACEBOOK SHOUT-OUTS After Stephanie Moore got laid off, she decided freelance full time and turned to Facebook to market her services. "It started with one client . . . that I met through Facebook. She was very popular with a national brand," Moore recalls, so she decided to attend one of the client’s networking events. There, Moore told her she wanted to "shift my focus from marketing and design to PR," and the client "agreed to be my guinea pig." Their bargain went like this: "After each big accomplishment," Moore says, "she would shout me out on Facebook as her publicist. Every time she tagged me, there was a guaranteed client on the way. All of her friends and potential clients began to reach out and ask for press releases, designs, etc.

The more work I did, the more tagging I would get." By tapping into one happy client with the influence to amplify Moore’s work, offers began piling up. "People would post my designs tagging me in the post, almost bragging that Stephanie Moore did it." Like another "solopreneur" who recently shared her method with Fast Company, Moore never thought Facebook could drive so much of her business—95% of which she now estimates comes from the social network. 4. TELL PROSPECTS WHAT THEIR COMPETITORS ARE UP TO If one company is looking for services, then their competitors are probably looking, too—or will want to as soon as they learn of it. "I had one company contact me for a strategic marketing plan for the upcoming year," recalls freelancer Stephen Twomey. He saw that as not just one potential opportunity but several. "I knew they were looking at other consultants as well." "So, since I knew company A was looking for something, I contacted companies B, C, [and] D and mentioned that one of their main competitors was looking for strategic marketing consulting"—without mentioning which one. Twomey says "Company A ended up going with a different [contractor], but company C actually bought a consulting package." The services you offer may not belong in a creative field, but it still often takes ingenuity to land those gigs in the first place. For just about every freelancer, thinking outside the box can really pay off.

Creativity, quality and care! The Cake Shop’s main ethos is quality. Baby-themed cupcakes, cakes and cake-pops are ideal for welcoming babies of close friends and family members into the world. An array of mini cakes and elegant bundts would add the loveliest touch to Friday afternoon tea. A variety of sports team and activity themed cakes that would make any supporter squeal with

excitement on their birthday. They even have a savory Sandwich Cake, made with labneh, olives, cucumber and your choice of white or brown bread – the options really are limitless! Personalized cupcakes varying in flavor can also be requested and molded to resemble or express anything your heart may desire. Use them to spell out “Happy Birthday”, “Get Well Soon,” or anything else you could think of. They also make for great edible bouquets, which can also be made using a board to complete the look. What’s also great about the cupcakes is that they can come on personalized boards designed specifically to suit your theme. The boards may not be edible, but they truly are a work of art, and The Cake Shop has revolutionized this concept, taking it one-step further than your average specialty bakery. Customized cake pops and truffles are also made in this haven to add a whimsy that will complete the vision of any gift or event you may be planning. What’s cuter than miniature bride and groom cake pops displayed in the middle of your bridal shower? And we can’t think of anything more delectable than their gorgeous cake truffles, available in chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, and the seasonally enjoyed carrot and pumpkin flavors. These surely make for the perfect gift for a loved one, a hostess, or even yourself when you just need a treat! Like the cupcakes, brownies can come frosted with any detailing you like, and The Cake Shop won’t skimp on suggestions to inspire you! Believe us when we say, after trying the brownie in its natural form, that The Cake Shop has truly mastered this dessert. With a fudgy succulence so decadent and delicious, it’s no wonder that the brownies are Mariam’s personal favorite! Ahmed appreciates them too, but his goto treats are the classic coffee sweets, which fare popular during Ramadan, receptions and diwaniyas. The Cake Shop also makes your life easier by putting together gift-sets. These sets are made according to theme, and include, for instance, an “It’s a Boy!” cake, a fresh bouquet, balloons and a congratulatory card. They have other options for other occasions too (hint to all of those stressing about Mother’s Day this month.) The Cake Shop is truly a gem in Kuwait. Ready to meet all of our needs to make all types of celebrations come alive, no occasion is too big or small for them, so be sure to try them out for your next event.

CHOOWY GOOWY GOODNESS

Exploring the ultimate destination for all things dessert By bazaar staff

Back in 2005, a group of young Kuwaiti entrepreneurs developed a concept with one thought in mind: Fresh baked cookies in classic airtight jars delivered to you anytime, anywhere. With that notion, Choowy Goowy was born. Over the years, this local concept grew to create over twenty mouth-watering cookie flavors and combinations that keep us coming back for more. Truly capturing the “taste of joy,” Choowy Goowy has given innovative takes on the desserts you know and love. Their brownies, molten cakes, cheesecake selections and truffles are all examples of the wonderful decadence that we love about Choowy Goowy. Nothing brings us such joy as seeing their airtight jars on our coffee tables and at gatherings! These jars alone have become symbolic of flavor, 96

quality and familiarity, warming their way into our homes and hearts. But far from being just a cookie place, Choowy Goowy’s Bakery and Café concept at The Promenade in Hawalli is home to all your dessert needs. With a light café menu for when you require a small savory bite, you can get home-made ice-cream and dine-in style desserts alongside their cookies, cakes and brownies. Still, that’s not half the fun! You can take your tiny-tots for a day of baking fun at Choowy Goowy’s Promenade location with the Kids Baking Corner. This fun and creative space gives kids the opportunity to partake in a challenging activity while getting in touch with their inner bakers. How does it work? Well, each child is given an apron, gloves, and hairnet to prepare themselves to get creative. Once ready, they are given pre-measured cookie dough and are guided through the process of rolling out and creating different shapes from their dough. Next, they are presented with a vast variety of different toppings such as milk and white chocolate chips, mini marshmallows,

sprinkles, and M&Ms to add to and decorate with their very own cookie creations. Once they’re done, their cookies are whisked away to be baked in the oven. While they wait for their finished masterpieces, each child is left to design and color their very own jar stickers. Once the cookies are ready, the kids get to take their very own cookie jar creations home! In establishing the Kid’s Baking Corner, Choowy Goowy is your go-to spot for fun-filled weekends with the entire family – proving to be the destination for all of your dessert needs!

Choowy Goowy is located in Second Avenue – The Avenues (2259 7949) and in The M1 – Promenade Mall (9723 8366). For deliveries, you can call them on 2262 0011 or 9911 7566, or order via Talabat.com. THAT BURGER LIFE

Having way too much fun with toppings from The Stack

By bazaar staff

Does everyone remember when we vowed to eat a little healthier last month? I can't say that we haven't kept that promise to ourselves, but sometimes, you just need a burger day! Because let's face it, life is all about balance. So to kick off our monthly Eats In ventures, we decided to celebrate all our hard work and efforts with a burger. Not just any burger, a burger from The Stack. What is The Stack, you may ask? A heaven in which any combination of toppings, sauces, protein and cheese is provided to create your ideal burger. We found this gem on the Carriage delivery app one hungry afternoon, and took turns scrolling downwards enthusiastically to pick dishes to invite to our food party. Caramelized Onion Dip – you look amazing, and you’re invited. Let’s have a wild time with some Wild Fries! But let’s be sure to keep it classy and pace ourselves come burger time. Oh, and boy was it ever burger time. The majority of the team chose The Stack’s listed creations on the burger menu. We found our receipt adding on names like The Glaze, The Quattro, The Original and The Amigo. Two of us, however, decided to go down a whole other road and play DIY with the Build Your Burger option. This would be the best time to tell you that I’m the only loser at the office who took last month’s carb-free challenge seriously, and decided to be boring by requesting two patties, grilled mushroom and onions, sandwiched between two crisp pieces of iceberg lettuce to replace a bun. My indulgent colleague, however, lived up to The Stack’s slogan: Layers of Indulgence, and in a literal sense, piled on the toppings to create a monstrous concoction. What did he get? An angus beef patty with ketchup, mustard, creamy mushroom sauce, the joint’s signature Stack Sauce, mayo, tomato, onion rings, dill pickles, maple glazed bacon and Monterey Jack cheese. Wow. For good measure, we added some onion rings to the list, (because, onion rings…) placed our order, and waited patiently for our food to arrive. So, how did it go, dear readers? Let me walk you through it. Our side dish and appetizer choices were beyond fun: the Caramelized Onion dip was all sorts of cheesy and creamy, coupled with baguette rounds for dipping. By the time I’d unwrapped my burger, the plate was already demolished, so it’s safe to say the team was beyond impressed. 100

And those onion rings: what poetry can we write about those onion rings! If there were an award for the perfect onion ring, The Stack would be on the list of places to review for consideration. Crunchy on the outside and not too onion-y on the inside, and they’re even great sans sauce. No wonder they sneak them into most of their burgers! While we’re on the topic of burgers, let me tell you about the compilation of burgers consumed. The Quattro was a four-cheese masterpiece, with three types of cheese stuffed into an angus beef patty, topped with cheddar cheese, onion rings, house sauce and sandwiched between a pillowsoft bun. The Original was about as original as you could get, with satisfying ingredients making for great taste: sharp cheddar, lettuce, tomato, a crispy onion ring, and of course, bacon: because bacon just makes everything better. We said hola to the Amigo, a fiesta burger containing fresh guacamole, salsa fresca, Monterey jack, jalapeno and chipotle ranch sauce. The Glaze is the most surprising burger of all, made with a tender piece of maple-glazed fried chicken, and topped with rocca salad, melted cheddar and honey mustard. This sandwich was such a nice break from all the burgers going

around, and a cheeky bite gave us a preview of our lucky co-worker’s tangy, tantalizing meal. All in all, this is what we love about The Stack: we love the beautifully spiced patty, which tastes fresh and isn’t too thin or thick, the deliciously soft and buttery brioche bun, and the fact that The Stack’s team really pays attention to your customized burgers. My low-carb, high protein burger came exactly the way I requested it: no bun, no sauce, just two angus beef patties wedged inside a lettuce bun with grilled onions and mushrooms – and mind you, “lettuce buns” aren’t even mentioned on the menu, but I asked for it and boy did I ever receive. And though healthy and only slightly naughty, it was delicious – but you bet come cheat day I’ll be reordering and creating a monstrosity of my own!

The Stack is located in Kuwait City, on Abdulla Al Mubarak Street. For more information, call them at 2241 5166, and follow them on Instagram @thestackkw.

THINK LOCAL

You can always count on Kuwait London Company By bazaar staff

The Kuwait London Company Team

Advocates of good food, Kuwait London Company (KLC) is known for its superb quality offerings, fresh ingredients and prompt delivery service. Initially set up back in 2008 by Mohammed and Mubarak Jaffar, KLC seamlessly ventured into different business and industries. Mohammed set up The Kitchen in 2009, and the family acquired Talabat in 2010. As Mohammed focused his efforts on expanding Talabat across the GCC, the potential of online deliveries led Mubarak to create Junkyard in 2012. As Mubarak figured that food was the company’s calling, they created, and are currently running, four restaurants with very distinct flavors and offerings: The Kitchen, Junkyard, Humble Burgers and Proper Sliders. And by keeping the communication lines open for feedback, KLC has created household names from their restaurants. 104

Their commitment and ethos when it comes to serving good food is clear: To provide high quality, reasonably-priced food that’s conveniently delivered to your door! Never ones to settle, KLC and Mubarak are consistently looking for ways to improve. While they aim to create signature dishes for each one of their four unique brands, some similarities and dishes will appear on the other menus. Here at bazaar, we consistently go back and forth in trying to figure out what we can collectively order for lunch, and we always agree on one of the four KLC restaurants. With their focus on bringing you delicious food wherever you are, all four brands are available on Talabat for your indulgence. So if you’re busy at the office or chilling at home, you can enjoy a meal from any of the restaurants! But that’s not all, they’re also available on Carriage! Using their own drivers, KLC has made it even easier for you to track your meal as it makes its way through traffic and straight to your door. But if you’re planning a feast for a gathering or

birthday, why not consider getting them to cater for you? Skip out on the messy dishes and prep by checking out the catering stations available to you through Bil Bayt! You’re guaranteed to please your visitors, and you can sit back and enjoy their made-to-order service first-hand! Since all the food is made to order, you know you’re getting the freshest ingredients with every meal that you order. Starting their food journey, The Kitchen brings us home-style cooked meals that are absolutely delicious. Bringing us some classic favorites such as the lasagna and introducing us to the concept of the famous Chubby Balls dessert, we’ve been hooked ever since. From that point onwards, we continue to call on The Kitchen when we’re in need of a heart-warming meal and can’t be bothered to cook. With their current three locations in Shaab Al-Bahri, Ardhiya and Mahboula, The Kitchen is able to service most of Kuwait’s governorates. An earlier attempt at expanding The Kitchen to The Village proved tricky and KLC was left with two options: Shut it down or

change concepts. So when it came to making this decision, Mubarak decided to keep the location and to create another restaurant instead, Junkyard. Expanding into two more locations, Junkyard has turned into the go-to spot for American street food done right. Their Jalapeno Bites and Skins are our go to starters and there’s something about their CrunchyO-Rings we can never get enough of. Not to mention their burgers and fajita offerings – oh the choices… As for the early birds in Kuwait City, head to Junkyard’s Al-Hamra location for their delicious breakfast offerings! Inspired by the high demand for burgers, Humble Burgers was born. With their humble offerings and delicious combinations, there’s something there for everyone. Their Humble Fries and Humble Bites have become staples in every order we make alongside the two wings options. Plus, we can never get enough of their Onion Rings! Choosing between a single or double burger or opting for their sliders has given us endless mixing and matching

opportunities. Don’t miss out on their Salted Caramel Brownie – it’s the perfect way to end any meal in our humble opinion. But because sometimes sliders are the way to go, Proper Sliders was next envisioned and created. Giving us a fun way to properly indulge in our burger addiction, we’re able to create our favorite trio of burgers to with any of their sides, salads or shakes. And when it comes to shakes, they know how to get us all excited. With options like Peanut Butter & Vanilla and Lotus Shakes, we could never just pick one. Those looking for a dine-in option rejoice, as Proper Sliders will be opening a larger dine-in area in The Village in Abu Al Hasaneya. Just when you thought it might end here, 2017 holds some exciting surprises at KLC. Always working on ways to optimize their delivery service to reach more areas more efficiently, KLC is planning further expansions still. While KLC’s concepts are mainly deliverybased brands, look out for dine-in locations as well and enjoy the food right there. Still, 2017

promises to bring us great news. For now, it’s a secret – but it has to do with everyone’s [read as our] favorite dessert. We’re not saying anymore simply because spoilers – but we promise you’ll love it!

Get your fix from anyone of the four restaurants online via Talabat.com or Carriage - and for catering, check out their menus on bilbayt.com. For more information on Kuwait London Company and all their concepts, you can visit their website www.kuwaitlondoncompany.com and also follow them on Instagram @KuwaitLondonCompany. 105

RESIDENT EVIL 7: BIOHAZARD By bazaar staff

’When I first saw Resident Evil 7, announced back at E3 2016, it instantly piqued my interest. It came (and possibly cashed in) right on the back of the recently canceled PT, AKA Silent Hills, the PS4 exclusive being developed by Hideo Kojima (of Metal Gear Solid fame) and Guillermo del Toro and staring Norman Reedus (Daryl from The Walking Dead). Both PT and RE7 are survival horror games set in a creepy abandoned house with an air of mystery and huge suspense, with extremely realistic visuals. If you put two screenshots side by side it would be hard to tell which game was which. PT would have been a huge hit, so it’s no surprise that somebody would step in to try and take that slice of the cake. Capcom did just that. As a fan of the first 4 or 5 Resident Evil games, the announcement and look of RE7 was, for me, a much needed breath of fresh air. The series had been going stale and in a progressively wrong direction since the success of RE4. It had become more about action and cut scenes than survival horror and suspense, and while I did play the later games, I enjoyed them less and less with each new release. RE7 goes back to its roots for this reboot, in the sense that it’s slow paced, extremely tense (more so than the original games) and true survival horror. In it, you play the role of Ethan, who receives an unexpected email from his missing wife of 3 years, Mia, and goes to her aid at a strange house some distance away. It doesn’t take long before you meet the Baker family and things start getting messed up, and thus your adventure begins! The title is officially Resident Evil 7 but cleverly named RESIDENT EVII, which keeps it in the series but also shows us that it’s something new, a fresh start. In my opinion it didn’t need to be a part of the RE series; it would work very well as a brand new IP. The game does reference the overall RE universe through Easter eggs and certain mentions during the story, but these things could have easily been un-included if they wanted to. Perhaps they kept it ‘Resi’ to sell more copies off the name of the brand. Personally, I’d have quite liked to see it under a new name, but to keep the references to the RE universe in there. It would have made for an awesome surprise to the spoiler avoiding gamers playing through the story. 106

Regardless of the name, if you like horror games, this one is essential. You don’t need to know a single thing about the RE history to understand and enjoy this addition. The game is in first person view, which immerses you even deeper into the story and environment, and it also has the standard RE inventory management system; no unlimited bullets for you, no regenerating health…you find items along your way but you better be sure to conserve them and use wisely! You can combine items you find to construct health potions, or stronger ammo and you still save your game progress manually using tape recorders (although on easy and normal mode, you do get auto save points as well). While these things are typically ‘Resi’ and fully expected, the game overall reminded me of the brilliant Alien: Isolation, which also took the same approach to planning your moves, and being scarce when using weapons. The setting is genuinely creepy and terrifying with plenty of jump scares as you progress through the story. I wasn’t able to play this alone; I had to have my wife sitting next to me the whole way through! We both felt weirded out, and jumped many a time. Even when we EXPECTED something to happen, the game has an ingenious

way of fooling you to deliver the jump at the exact moment you’re not ready. There are people online choosing to watch the game be played by others, rather than play it themselves, due to it being too scary…it’s that bad. Controls are simple, solid and very easy to get used to, and the audio effects (there isn’t much music) are some of the best I’ve heard in a game. To add to the horror, you’ll frequently hear strange noises around the house you’re investigating; creaky floorboards from upstairs, items falling randomly from shelves, piano keys being stuck while nobody is around…huge amounts of ‘nope’ await! I finished my first play through in around 10 hours, so it’s a short game but does offer value in encouraging multiple attempts, since you unlock harder difficulties on a new game plus mode (restarting but with all your items from the last game), where you can try to obtain all collectibles and see different endings. If you don’t like horror games, or are of a nervous disposition, that’s the only case I’d advise you to not get this. Otherwise, you have no excuses…buy it! Now if you’ll excuse me, I need some counter balance so I’m off to play some Pokemon or Rayman for the next couple of weeks.

MW50 WIRELESS ON-EAR HEADPHONES

BLACKPODS AIRPODS

NINTENDO SWITCH

ALO PHONE

BLACK & WHITE BIKE

LOFREE KEYBOARD

Thanks to a robust, timeless design that leaves their aluminum antenna exposed, the Master & Dynamic MW50 Wireless On-Ear Headphones offer range to match their sound. They work as far as 100 feet away from the Bluetooth source, while producing outstanding audio thanks to 40mm beryllium drivers. They charge over USB-C, offer 16-hours of battery life, built 30% smaller and lighter than their MW60--perfect for on-the-go use. Available in silver metal with black/brown leather accents and ear pads.

Imagining a future where phones don't even need screens, the Alo Phone is an intriguing concept. It was created by French designers Jerome Olivet and Philippe Starck and is crafted from an aluminum unibody coated in natural resin. The combination works to provide haptic and even temperaturebased feedback, and also allows the skin to repair scratches and scrapes automatically.

The Jet Black iPhone 7 was one of the highlights of Apple's September 2016 media event. So were Airpods. Blackpods Airpods go ahead and do what Apple should have in the first place: mix the two together. Based in Brooklyn, they can either paint your existing set or sell you an all-new pair. Either way, the 'pods go through a three-phase process to arrive at a scratch-resistant brilliant black finish. Just be careful not to lose one — unlike Apple, they don't sell spares.

Designed by Antwerp's Eltipo Graphic, this Black & White Bike is a fixie that's sadly one-of-a-kind. The concept was built for the pop-up shop CNT DWN, and creates outstanding contrast by coating one half of the bike in glossy white while the other section is done in matte black. It's finished with laser-engraved leather on the seat and grips, the lone source of detail on the simple project.

We can't decide whether to call it a console or a portable. Honestly, the Nintendo Switch is a little of both, and that's awesome. Dock its 6.2-inch, 720p touchscreen and it lets you play in HD on your TV. Grab it up, attach the Joy-Con controllers, and you've got a portable. Those same controllers can detach for multiplayer gaming, or just for wireless play when you flip out the screen's kickstand. The best part yet, it promises users up to six hours of play per charge.

Mechanical switches. Round keycaps. Everything about the Lofree Keyboard reminds you of a classic typewriter. Except the connection. Able to pair with up to three devices simultaneously, it's perfect for use with your computer, tablet, or phone, has three backlight options to easily adapt to different environs, and with the same layout as Apple's Magic Keyboard, it'll be instantly familiar to any Mac user.

MOODCAST DIARY

BOXER PRO

POSTURE

CONFIDE

MoodCast Diary is an app that tracks your mood. The way it works is you make diary entries over the course of your average day. The app will then track your mood as time passes. Once it gets into its groove, it can tell you what your pattern is for being happy or being upset. It also comes with a slick Material Design interface that’s easy to use. You get the basic features of the app for free. Paying the $2.99 (KD 1) will allow you to integrate your social media accounts into the app so it can gather more information.

If ‘’Inbox Zero’’ is your goal, Boxer Pro is the app for you. The innovative email, calendar, and contact manager helps you tackle your inbox more efficiently. Busy social media managers can take advantage of features like “Quick Replies” to set and send canned responses. The “Email Like” feature will save you even more time, allowing you to quickly acknowledge a sender’s message when it doesn’t require a more thorough response. With customizable features like the ability to specify your swipe gestures (to complete functions such as delete, archive, spam, etc.), Boxer Pro sets itself apart from the email client crowd.

Posture is an app that wants to improve your posture. It does this by using your gyroscope and a screen overlay. When it detects that your phone is in a position that is too stressful for your neck, it’ll pop up a little icon in the middle of the screen to remind you to straighten up. It includes various settings so you can control how often the app checks to make sure you’re doing it right. There are also some theming elements. It’s fun to use and generally unobtrusive. It’s also free.

Messaging apps are must-have tools for many social media managers, but sometimes security and privacy are overlooked. The Confide app provides end-to-end, military-grade encryption along with disappearing and screenshot-protected messages. While Snapchat users have found ways to get around the screenshot issue (such as taking a photo of a Snap with another device), Confide’s patent-pending reading experience unveils only a sliver of each message at a time and ensures the sender’s name is not visible. The right tools can make the job of a social media manager much easier. Better processes and greater efficiency lend more time to working on what matters—creating engaging content and building online communities.

POCKET CASTS

SQUEEZE

This app has been called the best podcast app for both iPhones and Android devices—and for good reason. Pocket Casts' database includes any podcast you could ever want, with over 300,000 unique shows. These are sorted by featured, trending, and most popular, so you can easily find something new. With advanced playback features, you can trim silence and add volume boost to help reduce background noise. Other features like intuitive queues and syncing options make Pocket Cast a must-have.

Squeeze is yet another finance app intended to help you save money, but it has a few features that make it stand out from the others. The app has three uses: financial advice, comparison shopping, and tracking your money. Squeeze combs through your bank account, identifying ways to help you find ways to save money, like breaking down the cost of switching to TV streaming apps instead of paying for cable. But the compare feature is perhaps the most interesting: By inputting your location and service provider, the app pulls up rates for different services like internet and phone. There, you'll be able to see if you're getting the best deal.

MEEM CAFÉ

A new take on classic, Middle Eastern flavors By bazaar staff

There’s something about food that makes it better when shared. Think about it, when was the last time you dug into a dish without imploring the person sat next you to try a bite? [Warning: said person must be a friend or relative, strangers don’t take too kindly to being force-fed off your plate!] That’s why restaurants with menus designed to be shared are always the most fun to go to in a group of sorts. But if you’re a solo diner or non-sharer, don’t fret – you can join in the excitement by simply sharing photos of your food and gloating, we’ve all done it! So when we made our way to Meem Café at the Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre, we gathered the troops to try as much food as we possibly can! Sharing is caring after all. 114

A classic destination, Meem Café has recently gone through an overhaul under their new head chef, Chef Khaled Al-Baker and the new menu is absolutely exquisite! The sharing platters, all day breakfast choices, mains and their infamous manakeesh are just some of their incredible offerings, and will leave you feeling light after a happy indulgent session. And with their new location at the Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre, we got to enjoy the dancing fountains as we looked over the menu. Not knowing where to start, as it all sounded so good, we let Chef Khaled be our guide. We just sat back, and enjoyed the fountain as we gleefully ooh-ed and ah-ed at the food that was about to make its way to our table. We kicked off our meal with some cold beverages – the Meem Mojito and the Sparkling Rose. The lemon and mint flavors in the Mojito were delightful and the Sparkling Rose was refreshingly

pink and sparkly. As we sipped on our drinks the Freekeh Balls, Lebanese Nachos and Meem Tray made their way to our table. Middle Eastern fusion at its finest! We were intrigued not only by the names of the dishes in front of us, but also by the flavors of the dishes and their components. Upon further inspection [read as we devoured], the Freekeh Balls are Chef Khaled’s answer to Arancini Balls! Fried to present a crispy exterior, this modern presentation of classic fluffy freekeh, formed into balls, is stuffed with mozzarella and served with a warm roasted red pepper sauce – divine! As for the Lebanese Nachos, they were every bit as delicious as the name implies. Creating a deconstructed shawarma, the dish consisted of freshly chopped veggies mixed with chicken, pine nuts and feta cheese served with oven-baked, crisp pita chips! A chips and dip scenario, the flavors of this dish were familiar and complex

all at once. Next came the Meem Tray – a mustorder for any group, if you ask us. With Hummus, Tabbouleh, Warak Enab (stuffed vine leaves), Falafel and Cheese Rolls, you can never go wrong. The hummus was airy and fluffy while the tabbouleh lent a fresh crunch to our meal. As for the warak enab and the falafel, they were wellspiced and beautifully presented. The cheese rolls on the other hand were fried to a crisp and the seasoned cheese oozed out with every bite. While we tucked into the appetizers, the Falafel Manakeesh in all its colorful glory made its way to us. Baked to perfection, the falafel was crumbled on top of the dough with bright pickled turnips, parsley and finished with a tahini sauce to tie it all together. Needless to say we were elated by how light each bite was. To accompany our entire meal, we got a serving of Zaatar Fries. Revolutionizing the face of fries everywhere, Chef Khaled wanted to create a side dish that would please every palate, and the Zaatar Fries were born. And revolutionary they are, the fries are coated in zaatar, sumac and olive oil then topped with Parmesan cheese. Believe us, these are not to be missed! Happily munching away at our fries, we also sampled a Beetroot and Spinach Salad. The welcomed sweetness of the beetroot and tang from the baby spinach acted as a palate cleanser. The salad came topped with feta cheese and pistachios before being tossed in a zaatar vinaigrette giving it an extra oomph. Every bite was fresh and enjoyable as we waited for our main, and it was totally worth the wait. We got the Kebbet Hamees and it was the best way to end our savory portion of the meal. The meat kebbe is prepared with a sweet hamees sauce that consisted of onions and raisins in a chicken jus. Served with a side of couscous, you take a kebbe (or three) with some of the hamees, mix and tuck in. Delicious! Once done, we ordered a cup of tea and waited patiently for our desserts. Because the desserts looked truly enticing, we couldn’t pick just one. So naturally, we ended up with two: A Basboosa Cake and Om Ali. A milk croissant pudding topped with vanilla ice cream, rose petals and pistachio powder, the Om Ali arrived bubbling hot and every bite was delectable and moreish. As for the Basboosa Cake, it was lightly sweetened, as the classic semolina cake is topped with a cream sauce that complemented the flavors of the cake. Feeling full but still able to move, we enjoyed the last dancing fountains show that was artfully synced to the melodies of Andrea Bocelli’s “Time to say Goodbye” right before we left, as we sipped on the remainder of our mint tea.

AUTOMATON

THE RIDE

SILVER EYE

By Jamiroquai

By Nelly Furtado

By Goldfrapp

Jamiroquai are back with brand new music and fans are delighted. Directed by Charlie Lightening, the visually spectacular Automaton video channels neo-noir science fiction and boasts creative direction from Jay Kay himself. Opening with a nuclear explosion, a robotic version of Jay Kay is seen taking in post-apocalyptic landscapes from the subway to the beach and a desert. Jay Kay said: "The inspiration is in recognition of the rise of artificial intelligence and technology in our world today and how we are beginning to forget the more pleasant, simple and eloquent things in life’’.

The Ride is the upcoming sixth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado. Back in 2014, during an interview with German newspaper WAZ, the singer said, "I’m working on an album and actually I am very pleased. I’ve been writing on this album for quite a while and will probably still continue to work this year on it, then finish it next year, or perhaps in 2016’’. So far, Nelly collaborated with British producer Duke Dumont in an upcoming collaboration, and another unexpected cassette-collaboration with Blood Orange called “Hadron Collider.”

Goldfrapp are back. The follow-up to 2013’s Tales of Us, Silver Eye is out March 31 via MUTE. The album was produced with John Congleton in Dallas and the Haxan Cloak in London. Alison Goldfrapp said in a press release: ’’We’ve never liked repeating ourselves. Often we react to things we’ve just done. We like the spontaneity of not knowing. It’s only through the process that we start to figure out what it is. The fans who have stuck with us are the ones who embrace that idea and are excited by the thought that they don’t know quite what to expect next.’’

By Depeche Mode

SPIRIT

THE STRING QUARTETS

The Wild will be the Wu-Tang Clan member’s first project since 2015’s Fly International Luxurious Art. The cover for the album features a cartoon version of a giant Raekwon rocking gold chains and holding a gold microphone. The buildings in the background resemble speakers, and one is decorated with a Wu-Tang logo. Although Raekwon has already cemented his legendary status in hip-hop, he explained that he’s always trying to improve. “Practicing on my craft and really trying to always step the bar up.”

Depeche Mode's forthcoming LP Spirit will be released this March and was produced by Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford. Frontman Dave Gahan also spoke about the new record and said the US election affected the outcome. He said: “We’re living in a time of real change. As I get older, the things going on in the world affect me more. I think about my kids and what they’re growing up into. My daughter, Rosie, was deeply affected by the election last year. … She just sobbed, and I was like, ‘Wow.’

Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson is reimagining songs like "Aqualung," "Living in the Past," "Bungle in the Jungle" and "A Christmas Song" as classical music compositions in a new LP The String Quartets, due to be released March 24th. "I felt that there were some songs rather special to me which featured the string quartet such as "A Christmas Song," "Reasons For Waiting" and "Wond'ring Aloud," Anderson said in a statement. "These were my first experiences of working with a quartet."

MB&F HM7 AQUAPOD WATCH

VOLTA COMPUTER

DUCATI DESERT SLED MOTORCYCLE

Designed to solve the problem of needing a car or truck to move packages through the urban landscape, the Gita Cargo Carrying Robot is your own personal delivery system. Measuring 26 inches tall and capable of carrying 40 pounds at speeds of up to 22 mph, Gita is primarily designed to accompany you without notice, letting you walk, jog, run, or bike to your destinations while it follows dutifully behind. It can also move by itself on a premapped schedule!

The MB&F HM7 Aquapod Watch employs a radially symmetric design. Immediately noticeable underneath the domed sapphire is the central flying tourbillion, which sits atop a vertical movement that includes a winding rotor with "tentacles" crafted from a block of solid titanium. As a water-focused watch, it has a unidirectional rotating ceramic bezel, and it's water resistant to 150 feet. The indications, which rotate around the center, are treated with Super-Luminova for readability under the surface, as are select rotor segments.

We all know robots are likely to replace many jobs over the coming years. If the Cafe X Coffee Robot is any indication, your barista's might be among them. Built in partnership with leading automatic coffee machine company WMF, the Cafe X is a fully enclosed affair, delivering perfectly-brewed drinks on demand. You can place your order at one of the touchscreens at the cafe or ahead of time via an app, and simply enter a four-digit order number to have the Mitsubishi robotic arm grab your cup.

When buying a computer, you normally have two choices: buy something that looks good, or buy something that's upgradable. With the Volta V Computer, you don't have to choose. Its unibody chassis is cut from American hardwood, precisionmachined, and then assembled and finished by hand. The components inside are laid out on a single level, protected by a magnetically-attached lid that makes upgrades and repairs easy. And its 5.5-inch height makes it not only ideal as a monitor stand but also lets you store your keyboard underneath.

Created to celebrate five decades of their soupedup pony cars, the Shelby 50th Anniversary Super Snake is the company's latest take on the ultimate Mustang. It starts with the engine, which get upgraded with forced induction to 670 hp, with a supercharged 750 hp as an option. The power is channeled via an upgraded suspension, and larger brakes help get the thing stopped. New body panels, including a hood, spoilers, grilles, and diffusers, all help to improve aerodynamics.

Inspired by the modified bikes of the '60s and '70s that roamed the California desert, the Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled Motorcycle is more than just a cosmetic upgrade. Changes from the streetsavvy model include added tubing, new skid plates, a longer, reinforced swing arm, and other updates meant to increase stiffness. It's still powered by the same 803cc L-twin engine, but has fully-adjustable Kayaba forks and shocks and special Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires, all of which help it tackle even the deepest sand with ease.

THIS CLOSE TO HAPPY by Daphne Merkin

Daphne Merkin has been hospitalized three times: first, in grade school, for childhood depression; years later, after her daughter was born, for severe postpartum depression; and later still, after her mother died, for obsessive suicidal thinking. Recounting this series of hospitalizations, as well as her visits to myriad therapists and psychopharmacologists, Merkin fearlessly offers what the child psychiatrist Harold Koplewicz calls “the inside view of navigating a chronic psychiatric illness to a realistic outcome.” The arc of Merkin’s affliction is lifelong, beginning in a childhood largely bereft of love and stretching into the present, where Merkin lives a high-functioning life and her depression is manageable, if not “cured.” In this vital memoir, Merkin describes not only the harrowing sorrow that she has known all her life, but also her early, redemptive love of reading and gradual emergence as a writer.

GOSNELL by Ann McElhinney

In 2013 Dr Kermit Gosnell was convicted of killing four people, including three babies, but is today thought to have killed hundreds, perhaps thousands more in a long spanning 30year killing spree. ABC News correspondent Terry Moran described Gosnell as "America's most prolific serial killer." Gosnell is currently serving three life sentences (without the possibility of parole) for murdering babies and patients at his "House of Horrors" abortion clinic. This book—now a major movie starring Dean Cain (Lois & Clarke)—reveals how the investigation that brought Gosnell to justice started as a routine drugs investigation and turned into a shocking unmasking of what is considered as America's biggest serial killer. It details how compliant politicians and bureaucrats allowed Dr. Gosnell to carry out his grisly trade because they didn’t want to be accused of “attacking abortion.”

NEVER NEVER

by James Patterson/Candice Fox

Never assume that you know someone. Harry Blue is the top Sex Crimes investigator in her department. She's a seasoned pro who's seen it all. But even she didn't see this coming: her own brother arrested for the grisly murders of three beautiful young women. Never... accept a reassignment to the middle of nowhere "for your own good." Harry's been sent to a makeshift town in a desolate landscape-a world full of easy money, plenty of illegal ways to spend it, and a ragtag collection of transient characters who thrive on the fringes of society. A place where little grows, but evil flourishes. Never... trust anyone. Looking into a seemingly simple missing persons case, Harry's been assigned to a new "partner." But is he actually meant to be a watchdog? Still reeling from the accusations against her brother, Harry can't even trust her own instincts, which she's never doubted...until now.

THE FIX by David Baldacci

Amos Decker witnesses a murder just outside FBI headquarters. A man shoots a woman execution-style on a crowded sidewalk, then turns the gun on himself. Even with Decker's extraordinary powers of observation and deduction, the killing is baffling. Decker and his team can find absolutely no connection between the shooter--a family man with a successful consulting business--and his victim, a schoolteacher. Nor is there a hint of any possible motive for the attack. Enter Harper Brown. An agent of the Defense Intelligence Agency, she orders Decker to back off the case. The murder is part of an open DIA investigation, one so classified that Decker and his team aren't cleared for it. They learn that the DIA believes solving the murder is now a matter of urgent national security. Further development include that critical information may have been leaked to a hostile government--or worse, an international terrorist group.

HERITAGE COLLECTION: THE PILOT EXTRA SPECIAL CHRONOGRAPH With its noble bearing and vintage patina, the new Pilot Extra Special Chronograph is imbued with the intrepid heritage of high-flying heroes. A natural heir to the onboard instruments developed by Zenith in the early years of aeronautics and known for their precision, sturdiness and outstanding legibility, this chronograph – with its virile bronze case, its highfrequency El Primero ‘engine’ and its black dial bearing green-emission SLN Arabic numerals–sports the vigorous typology of these iconic pilot’s watches. Framing an oversized luminescent display guaranteeing peerless readability, the substantial 45 mm-diameter case – featuring a large screwed-in crown and ratcheted pushpieces facilitating adjustment with gloved hands – is made of bronze: a highly resistant antimagnetic alloy that acquires a natural patina giving it a unique vintage touch. Topped by a domed sapphire crystal, the new sandblasted black dial picks up the font of the original large Arabic numerals, made from blocks of white (green-emission) SuperLumiNova SLN C1. The luminescent facetted hands sweep over this distinctive watch face, also punctuated by two counters and a railway-type minutes track. The inscriptions “Montre d’Aéronef” and “Pilot” are a reminder that the Manufacture was one of the first producers of altimeters and cockpit watches at the dawn of military and civil aviation. MAX&Co.’s International Style Ambassador, the eternally stylish Olivia Palermo, encapsulates the effortless elegance of the collection and fronts the advertising campaign for the fifth season. THE COLLECTION’S TRENDS IN FOCUS: City Flow/Easy Days (April 2017), Occasion Dressing (April 2017), Cali Sun (May 2017) and Pure Linen (May 2017). OOREDOO THE SAFEST TELECOM IN KUWAIT FOR CREDIT CARD TRANSACTIONS Ooredoo, Kuwait’s fastest network, announced yesterday that it has officially obtained the Payment Card Industry (PCI)-Data Security Standards (DSS) 3.2 certification, making it the first telecom provider in Kuwait to be certified with this version. PCI-DSS is the global industry standard for compliance and security for personal payment card data, to which vendors and businesses must conform to in order to protect cardholders’ personal data and prevention from credit card fraud. Ooredoo’s PCI-DSS compliance was validated in December of last year, after an extensive audit conducted by ControlCase, a qualified security assessor. Ooredoo Kuwait was the first company in Kuwait to take that step, further solidifying its position in the local market. This step helps customers make safe transactions Ooredoo’s web payment portal, in addition to using Ooredoo’s payment kiosks, conveniently located in 45 locations across Kuwait for customers’ satisfaction. PCI security standards are technical and operational requirements set by the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council to protect cardholder data. Compliance with the PCI set of standards is mandatory for their respective stakeholders, and is enforced by the major payment card brands. For customers’ utmost satisfaction, Ooredoo Kuwait customers can pay their phone bills and recharge their credit on Ooredoo’s new application available on the App Store for iPhone users, and on the Google Play store for Android users. SPORTY ELEGANCE – THE NEW AUDI A5 AND S5 COUPÉ How do you make a work of art even more beautiful? Audi designers have been pondering this question for years. The results are impressive: The new Audi A5 Coupé sports a fresh, modern and honed look. It is nevertheless true to its DNA with the sporty and elegant character being passed down to the new version. The best example is the wave-shaped shoulder line that characterized the previous model. The precisely sweeping line with pronounced bulges over the wheel arches emphasizes all four wheels – a cue to the quattro all-wheel drive. The perfectly balanced proportions with a long engine hood, the stretched wheelbase and short overhangs underscore the sportiness of the new A5 Coupé. The LED rear lights and LED or Matrix LED headlights with dynamic turn signals make high-end technology visible even after dark. Tarek Al Shafie, General Manager of Audi Kuwait represented by Fouad Alghanim & Sons Automotive Company, said: “The first generation A5 was truly revolutionary for its class, we are excited to present the all-new second generation model in our showroom.” He added “The early arrival of the all-new S5 coupe provides our customers the opportunity to own the sportier version of the A5 family. The launch of the A5 and the S5 cater to the needs and driving enjoyment of all our customers.” From 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, the new Audi S5 Coupé combines dramatic elegance with the performance of a sports car. It’s newly developed, turbocharged V6 engine produces 354 hp and consumes just 7.3 liters of fuel per 100 km. The sharper S exterior design and the S-specific details in the interior underscore the dynamic character of the Audi two-door sports coupé. The new model comes in two different engine variants: 40 TFSI, 45 TFSI, with a six-cylinder engine with 354 hp for the Audi S5 Coupé. The new Audi A5 and S5 Coupé are now available at Audi Kuwait showroom represented by Fouad Alghanim & Sons Automotive Company. For more information, please call 1811 118.

VIRGO AUG 23 – SEP 22

TAURUS APR 20 – MAY 20

You should feel especially sociable. You might attend one or more events, or choose another type of group activity. Relationships of all kinds should prove satisfying and comforting. Expect to grow closer to the friends you have and meet new friends with whom you share many interests. You continue to meet professional, creative, and financial goals in a big way.

An important goal might reach a point you've been aiming at for a long time. All those in your entourage have new respect for you. In fact, relationships of all kinds are warm, open, and honest, and you will probably enjoy the company of others immensely now. Romance, in particular, goes well. Feel free to indulge in a little celebration.

LIBRA SEP 23 – OCT 22

GEMINI MAY 21 – JUN 21

For you, relationships with other people should be going so well that you feel more loved than ever. A new friend or perhaps an old one you haven't seen in a while could suddenly become a powerful part of your life. You're probably feeling exceptionally innovative and more likely to make a success of whatever new ideas you have. Prepare for a busy and satisfying month!

Your focus is likely to be on learning. Something you've wanted to study for a long time may finally be within your grasp. Perhaps money makes this possible, or you've finally settled on a workable course of action. Travel might be involved. If you've been thinking about going back to school, get everything started today. If you do, you will probably attain what you want. Go for it.

SCORPIO OCT 23 – NOV 22

CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22

An unexpected opportunity could temporarily throw your life into disorder, but you will see from the start that this is a definite stroke of good luck that you shouldn't let pass. It could involve money, a chance to move to your dream home, or relationships in some way. Whatever it is, you're definitely going to be happy about it.

Some upsetting dreams might haunt you. They might evoke some uncomfortable emotional issues. You might be a bit edgy emotionally and more likely to overreact when other people quarrel or machines break down. It might be a good idea to analyze your dreams first thing in the morning so you can learn from and release them. That way you will be more balanced throughout your day.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21

A lot of letters, calls, and other communications could skyrocket you into a new and unexpected space. If you've been thinking of trying your hand at writing or speaking, this is the time to work on it. All signs indicate good fortune will come your way at this time, though it might sneak up on you and leave you a bit disconcerted. Pull yourself together and go for it.

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 19

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 22 Machines are likely to pose a few problems this month, particularly where work and money are concerned. An unforeseen problem might interfere with your social life, perhaps forcing you to cancel a get-together you've been anticipating. If the person you were supposed to meet protests, avoid taking out your frustrations on him or her. Make new arrangements. It's only a temporary situation.

PISCES FEB 19 – MAR 20 You may wonder why increased intuition has seemed to replace your usual logical self. An unexpected intellectual, spiritual, or metaphysical insight might come to you from another realm. It may seem so profound that you wonder if it really came from you. Write it down in detail. Whatever you come up with is going to keep you in the clouds all day. Don't trip or bump into anyone!

Good fortune continues to come your way, and your life may finally seem to be moving in the direction you wanted. This month, however, you may feel frustrated by a lot of minor, if somewhat bizarre, upsets. Dropping things, losing objects you just had in your hand, forgetting names - just about anything could happen. Try to see the humor in it and stay cool.

AQUARIUS JAN 20 – FEB 18 All the planets are very fortunately aligned for you, and the coming weeks should be great. Minor irritations could make you wonder, though. You might worry that this good fortune won't last. Don't work yourself into a panic. This all continues through the next six months. However, you may need to focus sufficient effort if you'd like to make it last for a long time.

ARIES MAR 21 – APR 19 No matter what friends tell you, this isn't the time to make an investment of any kind, from buying a house to starting a savings account. And this isn't a good time to invest online. The planetary energies don't favor computers or other forms of modern technology used in such transactions, so wait. Discussions about possibilities are OK. Just don't do it yet. 132
