Int It’s getting hot in here…..but don’t take off all your clothes, since you’ll probably get arrested, and at the very least, locked up for a significant amount of time! Also, people will look at you funny, especially in the mall. All kidding aside, I think living here is the ultimate proof that global warming is real, no matter what some people say about it. It’s been getting progressively hotter in Kuwait and the region every single summer for the last decade or so, and now temperatures in the 60’s are casually predicted and mentioned both in the local and international news. At this rate, we might hit 70 C in the next five years or so, and if that happens, life as we know it will change forever.
The bazaar team...
Temporary summer migration has already begun and people have been leaving town heading all over the world to enjoy their annual vacations. And while we all have our favorite go-to spots, it’s always fun to try something new. You can find inspiration from our Up Close and Personal interviewee this month, Salem Alhajri. Renowned for his incredible travel photography, you’ll be wanderlusting over this feature in no time! Instead, you can take some action about that travel fever, and visit the beautiful Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara, where you’ll be greeted by the fall season, which means beautiful weather, mind-blowing nature and scenery, with an incredible beach experience to boot.
Yasmine El Charif
If you’re staying put for the summer (There’s never any shame in a staycation! Have you seen how amazingly empty the roads have been?), there’s still a lot to do. And because we never preach what we haven’t practiced, we have been all over Kuwait trying out all of the fun things you can do to stay cool. In this expanded Summer in the 965 special, the team tried stand up paddleboarding, faux-surfing and even diving, and now they keep trying to sneak out of work for more beach fun. If you don’t want to brave the great outdoors, Tekzone is a great place to spend a couple of hours. Sometimes all you need to have fun is a little bit of imagination and virtual reality. If you’re still looking for ideas of things to do, our annual Summer in the 965 guide in this issue is the best place to start.
Hallah Danbouh Yasmin Gamal
This month, we picked Maize as our ultimate dining destination. With the disappearance of people, comes the disappearance of traffic, and it was an absolute delight to drive over to Abu Al Hasaniya to feast on an amazing medley of Mediterranean dishes that work for meatlovers and vegetarians alike. We fell in love with their ability to perfectly layer spice, flavor and ingredients in every dish. This issue of bazaar is a combined July and August one, so our next print issue will be out in September when everyone is back from their vacations. In the meantime, our website www.bazaar.town and our social media platforms will be updated as usual on a regular basis, so please make sure you are following us for updates on things to do, places to go, and so much more! SUMMER IN THE 965: FLOW HOUSE
SALEM ALHAJRI
THE NEW PORSCHE 911
With a menu inspired by the best that Mediterranean cuisine has to offer, Maize, located in Abu Al Hasaniya, is comfort food that is sophisticated. Every dish has been meticulously designed to stir instant recognition but also elicit novelty in your palate. Join us in this special exploration of bazaar Goes Dining.
We did all the work so you could have all the fun. This year we tried out different activities that are perfect for summer like diving, standup paddle boarding and faux-surfing and have lived to tell the tale. That is in addition to our annual summer activity guide that you can find in this issue.
Photographer, traveler, Instagrammer, Salem Alhajri juggles many hats. We got Up Close and Personal with the amazing traveler to find out more about the man we love living vicariously through as he explores the world. Turns out, it’s a lot harder than it looks.
Updating an iconic car like the Porsche 911 is such a precarious job. But the eighth generation is both completely true to the car’s legacy and heritage while still receiving a real update to many of its features. We go cruising with the new Porsche as it made its debut at Porsche Centre Kuwait.

We all know better than to spend too much time in the sun without wearing sunscreen, but we still want that healthy, beautiful sunkissed glow. H&M Beauty’s latest limited collection in metallics and golden tones will leave you looking as if you spent the weekend on the shore, without the skindamage.
It might be easy to assume that no one is interested in classical music anymore, but our Truth Or Dare interviewee is proof that the opposite is true. The multi-instrumentalist favors his clarinet but has been involved in the musical community in Kuwait for over a decade.

SUMMER IN THE

BALANCING ACT
Paddle-boarding with Kuwait Water Sports By bazaar staff
Perhaps you’ve seen the pictures; beautiful people doing yoga on paddleboards as the sun rises, or Katy Perry ignoring Orlando’s bloom while he paddles for them both. It can’t be that difficult if dreadlocked blonde hipsters called Noah and Kai, S’well packing their cold brews while downward dogging can do it. So, bazaar thought we’d give it a try too. We have now gained a whole new respect for the sport. “I’m looking at the sea, it’s a bit windy?” was the first text we got that morning form Kuwait Water Sports, asking us if we wanted to postpone the experience until it got calmer. But when we checked the wind speed it said 10 KTS which generally translates as a “gentle breeze” according to windfinder.com. Well, we are hard core content creators, mothers, wives, welltraveled expats, and we can handle anything classed as ‘gentle’. We try three different paddle boards, two at 11 ½ feet long, one of which can attach a sail for windsurfing, and a smaller, lighter weight 10 ½ feet long board. All three are inflatable which is hard to believe when you see them. They feel pretty solid, and we found, are nearly impossible to tip over once in the water. “It’s like a spider’s web inside” says our instructor on the strength of the boards, but I think he mean’s Marvel spider and not ‘arachnid’ spider. In shallow depths you can simply place yourself on the board, one knee at a time. In deeper waters however, with a bit of a ungraceful body lunge, you can sprawl yourself across the width of the board and bring up your legs behind you. From there you can sit on your ankles or raise yourself up and kneel, facing forward, paddle in hand. Pretty easy so far, and this was the case for all of us. The difficulty comes the higher up you place your center of gravity. Lifting up to kneel you can feel the quadriceps tensing, and your core, as you paddle each side of the board. Then, up to the full stand. Not as easy as you’d think. Placing my hands down on the board at either side of my knees, I lifted my body up from the kneeling position, and placed my feet flat on the board, choosing to use leg power to then raise my entire body to a stand. “Tits over hips!” I shouted to my colleagues, “Bend your knees and lean back a bit!” Perhaps “stand up straight, shoulders back” would have been a better guide. This is a real workout! If you want to gain any kind of momentum you must stroke each side equally to propel yourself forward in a straight line. Going further out, the waves, gentle ones mind you, from the gentle breeze, push the board up and it slaps down onto the water, gently again. This is enough to give the inexperienced paddle-boarder the wobbles however and if you’re not confident you will
22
end up over the side. If you are too confident, you will also end up over the side. I ended up over the side. It’s a game of control, paddle-boarding. It’s exhilarating actually. How well you do, depends on patience and determination. Don’t try to run before you can walk. Or, headstand before you can balance, I found out quickly. While some colleagues thought paddle-boarding in groups would be fun to let off steam, others thought that being alone in silence, watching the water and what lies beneath would be therapeutically calming too. It seems like the ideal way to get a hardcore workout done without needing to join a gym or schlepp on over to a class and have to deal with other people. With the inflatable paddle-boards you can take these anywhere at any time. Now there is no way you can say, “There’s nothing to do in Kuwait”, especially if you own your own board! We’re impressed to hear that the Kuwait Water Sports paddle board kit has
everything you need included in the price; board, paddle, pump, accessories, and it all fits into one easy-to-carry bag. Our instructor also takes his with him when he travels and has even taken it to Sharm El-Sheik. When asked though, where he likes best to paddle board he says, “Honestly, Kuwait.” Because this is not a water sport where you are searching to view the underwater secrets of the sea, many fish get frightened off by the paddle anyway. This is a physically challenging sport where you get to search your strength of mind too, and that is thrilling. To get in touch with Kuwait Water Sports follow the account @kuwaitwatersports on Instagram and direct message them. Sailboats and other watersports equipment as well as paddle-boards are also available for purchase. For enquires, call or WhatsApp 6686 4388. Try paddleboarding and other watersports with Savannah Sailing Shack on Instagram @savannah.s.shack.

IN SEARCH OF FAMILIARITY
Are you willing to jeopardize an entirely new adventure over a piece of chocolate? By George Tarabay
Hola amigas y amigos (que feminista Georgie boy). As always, I try to start my articles with a piece of my multi-faceted personality (I have the flu, so if this introduction comes off as arrogant, I have absolutely no processing power in my brain to detect this). I am currently on a road trip in Argentina, though by the time you read this, I’ll be probably be somewhere else. Argentina is a marvelous country with two of its greatest exports being my wife, and everything else. Be it as it may, lovely as this country is, it just lacks one tiny detail to be perfect for me: The brands of chocolate and potato chips that I am familiar with. Some of you are judging me…fair point. I can hear you thinking: “Really? An article about chocolate and chips? What a waste of space." To which I concur. You are right, but please do keep reading. As a formal, horizontally challenged individual, I do not take my chocolates and chips palate lightly. On the contrary, I developed a strong attitude towards my sweet and salty preferences that I use these preferences as anchor points wherever I travel. When I’m abroad, the first thing I do after checking into the hotel is visit the local grocery store and buy chocolate and chips. Stuff that I like, and have them on display in my room. It centers 24
me, it gives me comfort to know that if my anxiety overpowers me, I can always go back to indulge in a familiar taste. Lame. Until you try it, and you totally should try it. Then, I came to Argentina for the first time ever last year. So, this piece arrives as an echo of last year’s trip in addition to this current trip. It just took me this long to process this thought. (Editor’s note: Dear George, also lame, but, go on). In Argentina, they don’t even share our taste preferences. The simple question of ‘Do you have salt and vinegar chips?’ turns so many heads, as if I just requested an A5 poster of Prince wearing a t-shirt… it’s that weird of a request. Chocolates are a different thing all together. They don’t have the same brands we carry back home. Then again, they don’t even share the same language. So, how did I rationally cope? I drove miles on end to find one familiar thing. Almost a 100 minutes later, I found it, the Chocolate Egg that has a surprise in it, only here they call it Sorpresa! On the way back from my drive, I couldn’t help but reflect on all the why's of my actions. I mean, I did drive for 100 minutes. Why did I go so far to find something I could have easily, and effortlessly, after a month? Why is it so important that I stick to an insignificant taste rather than trying something new? The obvious answer is that these chocolate eggs are awesome (by the way, you should totally
stick them in the freezer for 30 minutes before eating them. You’re most welcome, and tell the world). The not so obvious answer is that we need home, or at least a piece of it, wherever we go, whatever that piece may be. Last year and just before summer, I wrote about disconnecting and that still stands true as ever. It’s just that I didn’t realize that I never fully disconnect, because I always keep a token of my return to my comfort zone. Chocolate, chips, tv shows etc. Whatever your choice is, we all carry that one routine or habit with us on our trip without realizing we packed it along for the adventure in the first place. Consider those bobby pins you find at the bottom of your suitcase when you unpack at the hotel. Once found, your reaction is one of indifference, but the moment you use one you go, ‘Oh, that was convenient!’. And just like those bobby pins, the comfier you will ever be is when you get them out of your hair and just try something new, like a scrunchie, or a makeshift elastic band. Whatever it is, let loose and enjoy the trip.

DREAMLAND
Every great dream begins with a destination By bazaar staff
Here at the bazaar office, our conversations always swing around, from politics, favorite memes, to our dream destinations! For this month's hit list, we kept it super broad. If you’ve actually had the chance to visit your dream destination, a new one would emerge, even if it’s not realistic. Our dreams have always felt real while we’re in them, it’s only when we wake up that we realize that things were strange. So, we decided to dream a little bigger and posed this question; where would you travel if you were filthy rich? Jennifer Cádiz (Mixed Media Solutions) Destination: Beyond the veil, and through the wall because I'm ready for the truth Activity: Supping a strictly vegan, foul tasting molasses like liquid, probably poured by a shaman of sorts with a bucket next to me for the next few hours for immediate relief. But will it be? (for now lol, I'll think of something else less 'intoxicating'). Yasmin Gamal (Mixed Media Content) Destination: The land where the sun rises, Nippon
26
aka Japan. It is one of the world's most fascinating countries. They have everything; history, culture, amazing cuisine, crafts, and a variety of ecosystems. Activity: I want to walk around Tokyo's different neighborhoods, shop in GINZA, climb mount Fuji and even sing in Karaoke bars. And since I have an obscene amount of imaginary money I would visit all the major islands to sample their food and culture. And I would also hit the major theme parks like DisneyLand and Universal Studios. Hallah Danbouh (Mixed Media Content) Destination: The ocean. A trip around the world on a yacht, a boat, a submarine, a seaplane... Basically, any form of sea-transportation to check out multiple destinations, from islands to mountains. Activity: Keep on swimming everywhere, every day, anytime till I gradually turn into a whale or a mermaid! Plus, kayaking in the middle of the ocean. In-between locations, I'd take a break to check out each and every city we land on, explore different food cuisines, and shop for new swimsuits/clothes till I reach my whalegoal. Umika Pidaparthy (Online Producer) Destination: Space! If I was filthy rich that's probably where I'd want to go. To be able to see the Blue Planet
in its entirety would be something! From what I've read, in space you realize you are a small but significant part in the fabric of the universe, and I'd love to experience that feeling. Activity: A spacewalk would be amazing. Or even a trek on the moon to see that famous view of the Earth rising. Yasmine El Charif (Content Manager) Destination: Since we’re talking filthy rich here, why even settle one destination? It’s all about globe trotting and charting that private jet to take you to where your heart desires. I would start off my trip in Paris for some incredible dining and shopping (no spa treatment will go by untried), then off to the Bahamas to luxuriate by the sea, then back to London to catch a few shows, and shop some more. You see, in instances like this, cliches are more than welcome. Activity: I would indulge in amazing food experiences at Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester, or Le Gavroche, and Heston Blumenthal’s Dinner.

THROUGh THE LENS OF A TRAVELER It’s not easy being Salem By bazaar staff
One look through Salem Alhajri’s Instagram profile and you’ll be hit with instant FOMO (Fear of missing out). Whether it’s his impeccable talent for photography, the destinations he’s managed to cover, or his sense of humor that is clearly seen from a simple caption. Through Salem’s eyes, we are able to travel the world through his beautiful lens. Known as @BeingSalem on social media, with a splash of his vibrant favorite color yellow, which he uses as a distinctive element in most of his content, he started off by explaining why he picked this specific nickname, “It’s a simple name yet holds great value to me. In a world filled with social pressure and opinions, I wanted to stay me and be myself.” We’ve seen it through multiple platforms, the simplest action in staying true to yourself is as essential to Salem as we are sure it is to his followers as well. If that touch of identity is lost, an unfortunate play of the domino effect may be initiated and everything, in terms of content delivery, to social media impact, could be gone. But Salem has managed to stay true to himself, and as a daily reminder, this is simply reiterated through his social media handle. It’s not easy being Salem though, from seeking new destinations to capturing that one, flying-off-theground, bizarre photo, which is another signifying element to his work, and a fun trick to master! He doesn’t shy away from sharing his photography skills. A question that everyone asks Salem and is always popping up in the comments section is “How did you take that photo of you flying?!” To capture that image, you’ll have to casually jump at least 20 or more times, and constantly snap, re-snap over and over again till you catch that one fly photo. Patience and perseverance are the key, and again, it’s not easy, it’s definitely challenging, but totally do-able! “I created my platform and content with the aim to help, teach, and support people [interested in photography or travel] by sharing what I’ve learned and taught myself when it comes to using the phone camera in particular. We use our phones every day, and I found it to be the best way to capture the beauty around us. In addition to photography, travel is a passion of mine,” says Salem. Combining his ultimate love for travel photography, and traveling in and of itself, results in amazing content. Passing down cool spots to visit in different contents, and perfectly delivering the beauty of landscapes, cities, food, culture, even people, is always lovely to see, after all a photo can speak a thousand words. We’re also loving Salem’s video experiments, presenting us with an insightful, creative and well-made travel diary. No success comes without a challenge, and the most challenging encounter Salem faced was when he actually started traveling. “I wanted to be different in my trips and tips, especially when there are so many travelers and photographers. I found my way of traveling and photography through my phone. I feel free with only my phone in my hands,” he says. That’s his method, showing people how to easily book trips, find places, and most importantly, capture memorable photos. Salem’s message and the goal of his platform revolves around showcasing the best in both travel and photography. It is evolving with every new destination, one photo at a time. He shares his passions on his profile highlights, where even the [Continued...]

programs/apps that he uses for filters, motions and much more are there for us to browse and learn from. Salem addresses various questions when it comes to these topics, and in return we get a glimpse of the world, locations to add on our vay-cay bucket list and multiple photography tricks to use whether traveling or not. At the end of the day, it’s how you take the knowledge and implement it yourself. On that note, Salem shared with us some of his favorite 2019 summer destinations, such as Sardinia (Italy), Porquerolles (France), St. Moritz (Switzerland), Iceland (but it’s going to be cold). Plus, we absolutely had to learn about some of Salem’s favorite travel experiences, and he duly gave us a healthy dose of Fomo after he told us about his personal experience of staying and living Paris for three months. He ate, slept, and lived life like a local, eating the finest French food with help of an app he uses called Eatwith. But one experience we’d prefer to avoid is when he was in New York City for one month during the city’s second biggest blizzard in history… Yikes! Today, Salem’s message extends to sharing ideas on how to make the most out of your travel experiences, constantly finding new destinations to explore and enjoy, and so much more. Check out his profile for even more inspiration on your next travel trip and photography trick!

A GUIDE TO THE RIGHT ROAD-TRIP
From navigation to entertainment, plan your US road trip around these amazing tips! By Ayman Nassar
In 2016, I debuted my first cross-country roadtrip in the USA where, suffice to say, things did not turn out as expected on several fronts, from incorrect bookings to almost-arrests, and a much needed cash influx which had us sleeping in our car in a rest-stop. In 2019, we shortened the distance and made sure to cover all our bases in order to avoid the pitfalls from the last vacation. This time, we achieved miraculous results. So here is a review on how it went, and how you can plan similarly for your next road trip in the U S OF A. Choosing your vehicle: From the get-go, we knew there would be long drives. Plan accordingly by ensuring you have a valid international license (10 KD) and prebook your insurance (the USA is a country ripe with lawsuits and fender-benders). Use the internet to your advantage and check multiple car rental companies. Some companies try to stick you with a one-way fee if your drop off is different than your pick up location. You can easily avoid this if you keep searching. Data, Data, Data: All hail Google Maps! There is no denying the usefulness of the ability to quickly plug in your destination and have it automatically update based on traffic and wrong turns is a gift from the heavens. You need data, and thankfully T-Mobile has a great tourist package, which you can upgrade to unlimited data. The long drive: Each state is also GINORMOUS. Our road-trip started from Denver, Colorado with a brief 4.5hr 34
drive to our first hotel in Southfork. The longest drive was from Southfork to Las Vegas (11hrs, with only two stops in the middle – one scenic 4 state points, and one fuel & food). Our final drive was Vegas to Los Angeles (5hrs). When driving for prolonged periods, your best friends are as follows: Waze app (to warn you of speed limits and/or police), music (to keep you distracted), 5hr energy (to keep you alert). Focus on numbers to maintain your sanity, whether you count exits or the KMs to your next stop. Pay your fines: The world is fickle, despite avoiding many of the pitfalls of the last trip, this time I was unable to talk my way out of a speeding ticket. You cannot pay online (creature comfort of Kuwait). For this you will need a debit card, a post office and a money order. Do not put off paying it, as it could possibly be a barrier to your entry in later years. What you see and what you pay: Kuwait has left us unprepared for the greatest scourge of the world, TAXES. The price you see online is NOT what you end up paying, specifically for hotels at time of check-out. There are always hidden costs here and there, so ensure you have more than enough moolah in your coffers. Holy gratuity Batman!: Another scourge is gratuity. In Kuwait tipping is discretionary, in the USA it is expected. Your receipt will contain a rough guide for tipping, from 15 to 20%. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT convert to KWD. In some places (i.e. JFK airport) it is non-negotiable. You will find that gratuity ads up, needing one to approve a separate budget for it.
The Entertainment: Two important events occurred during this trip, with nostalgic ramifications worthy of a separate article at a later date; the first being attending our first concert of our favorite band, The Backstreet Boys, which just so happened to be the last of their Vegas residency. Despite taking place at the Zappos Theater (indoor, stage, seats), the ability to reminisce the lyrics we grew up to as children was beyond words. The second, Endgame. A farewell to the characters we spent 10 years watching on the big screen. That one had us sit through a 3hr long movie with a 2-year old. Fortunately, he passed out early, but not before earning us a few rude stares from fellow movie-goers when he kept roaring whenever a villain would appear onscreen. Fuel for thought: As a general rule, the further you travel westward, the higher the price of fuel. There are ways to search for cheaper fuel within the city, such as gasbuddy. Be prepared to drive a bit for the best price, so do not wait until the last minute. That being said, there are plenty of things to do in each State, from Universal Studios Hollywood to skydiving near San Diego. Plan your trip, prepare your budget, leave space for overruns and enjoy your time!

APPLE'S ORIGINAL SIN
They invented it, now they need to fix it By Mark Wilson
"What happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone." The message was printed 14 stories high, in simple black and white, on the side of a building at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The proclamation was quintessential Apple: a bold spectacle, a well-timed verbal play, and a calculated jab at Google, Amazon, and every other competitor about to show off its latest products on the world's biggest stage. It was also misleading. Apple, after all, practically laid the groundwork for the surveillance economy with its powerful App Store. Through a certain lens, the iPhone is one of the most secure devices in the world. Its contents are encrypted by default. Any data that Apple collects through services such as Maps is assigned to random identifiers (rather than being tied to users' IDs) that are periodically reset. Unlike Google's Chrome browser, Apple's Safari doesn't track users across the web, which means the company could be leaving billions of dollars in revenue on the table by not harvesting users' data. But that doesn't stop the two million or so apps in the App Store from spying on iPhone users and selling details of their private lives. It's not just Facebook and Google that are using their iOS apps to hoover up your personal information for the benefit of marketers or back-alley data brokers. Beneath the App Store lies a flourishing ecosystem of businesses devoted to collecting, analyzing, and profiting from user data. Apple's most consequential decision, though, may have been to emphasize apps based on popularity. With thousands of apps suddenly coming online, the company wanted to give users an easy way to navigate the App Store. It created lists of the most popular paid and free apps, by category, setting them up to become viral hits. App pricing soon became a race to the bottom. Software, which had traditionally sold for $20, $30, or $50, cost one-tenth of that in the App Store, or it was just free. The cheaper the app was, the greater chance it would become a chart-topping impulse download. This economic model, however, doesn't support the kind of teams needed to create good--or even decent—software, so developers compensate by selling user data. Today, it's routine for developers to insert a bit of code into their software that sends user information directly to outside companies. These data-marketing firms are generally tight-lipped about what they pay, but one company, Huq, advertises that it shells out as much as $1.10 for the location data of every 100 monthly active users, which means an app with a million users could make $11,000 a month from Huq. 36
That's not much, but developers rarely stop at just one data-mining customer. In other cases, the data-marketing company simply owns the app. Weatherbug, for example, is owned by ad platform Groundtruth. And the two biggest advertising companies on the web--Google and Facebook--provide analytics and other various software for more than 600,000 iOS apps, according to research firm Apptopia, which allows them to peek inside a third of all apps in the App Store. For the most part, this all happens with users' permission. Apple is beginning to acknowledge the problems on its platform. "We have to admit when the free
market is not working," Tim Cook said in an interview with Axios last November. The Apple CEO has formally called on Congress to pass legislation to protect consumers, which could set higher standards for app data brokers and hold them accountable for privacy violations. But punting these issues to regulators obscures the fact that Apple is already the sole ruler of the App Store. A game of chicken with developers, let alone Facebook, would be dangerous. But if Apple wants what happens on your iPhone to, finally, actually stay on your iPhone, it may be a game that it needs to play.

IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE, PLAY ON Clarinetist Preslav Petkov By bazaar staff
Originally from Bulgaria, Preslav Petkov is not your typical clarinetist. He’s a musician who’s been based in Kuwait for the past 15 years, and he is currently working as a woodwind instrumental tutor at the Kuwait English School. Preslav has done so much for the music community in Kuwait, that it would be safe to assume that anyone in Preslave's shoes would feel overwhelmed by all the hard work that goes into fostering the growth of the local music community. But, his passion towards his craft makes all the effort worthwhile, and also makes for an awesome story for all the music lovers out there! 42-years-old and thriving, Preslav graduated from The National Music Academy that is based in the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia. He went on a journey to become an inspiring instrumental teacher. Not only that, but he also plays the piano and the saxophone, even though his true love lies with the clarinet. “My dad brought me to a musical school in Rouse, that is my hometown [in Bulgaria], and when I heard the sound of various instruments, as soon as I heard the clarinet, I loved it. I fell in love with it immediately, I loved the natural sound it makes.” Music was not just a vital passion for Preslav, it’s also a dedication. This can be seen through his teaching methods, where his greatest achievement lies in encouraging younger generations to play instruments, learn, and explore the world of musical art through them. He believes that the best way to grab the attention of music seekers is when they have the chance to both hear and see a demonstration of an actual instrument. “I wanted to deliver my passion and continue giving my love to music through my students, and I decided to just deliver my knowledge [and] not to just keep it to myself, and pass it on to the next generation, I gave my passion to them,” he says. Preslav’s experiences alone speak miles of his passion. He used to work as an orchestral player, he was part of two major professional orchestras, including the prestigious Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, and several touring productions and collaborations. During his time in Kuwait, Preslav explains his joy in meeting a nationally-diverse group of people, as he says, “It is such a unique
38
international place, with so many different customs and cultures met here. I have made a lot of new friends, not only from the music scene.” The power of music encourages people to become immersed in different experiences, while also bridging together various cultures. In a time where classical music events were not as popular as they are today, one specific family Preslav spoke highly of are the Bushmans, renowned for their incredible musical efforts in Kuwait. “I’m so grateful we found each other in Kuwait. Since then numerous events [such] as opera, symphonic, oratorio, jazz, musical, various genres of productions were staged. I would call them both our musical saviors” he says. On top of these amazing musical expressions, Preslav and the Bushmans established a valuable relationship between themselves and the Bulgarian Opera house, Stara Zagora. After collaborating with various local and international musicians, especially through Dar AlAthar’s Bulgarian Music Nights, fruitful relationships were formed. Plus, as someone who performs regularly on stage, along with his wife, Anna Karadimitrova, a talented Operatic singer, the projects just keep coming in! An exciting upcoming event Preslav shared with us is The Battle of the Soprano, which is a crossover project in mixing opera and jazz for a battle that’ll be set for next year. “Music is a unique language, through playing music people can speak the same language,” says Preslav. Music is the food of love, so we will keep the play on!

WHAT THE WATER GAVE US A dive in Qaruh Island By bazaar staff
Alright, I think by now we can stop the whole “There’s nothing to do in Kuwait" discussion. We're even going to prove you wrong with this specific edition of bazaar tries. We take a break from our sofas to entertain the idea of diving. Since it’s summer, and hitting the beach is simply the best kind of activity (there’s just so much to do!) we decided to go ahead and give life under the sea a try with Bubbles Diving Center. Bubbles is a scuba diving center that was established back in 2009 with a collective group of professional instructors who are there to provide diving courses. Bubbles is a full service center, and offers diving trips both locally and internationally. Their diving destinations include three islands in Kuwait, Kubbar, Qaruh, and Umm Al Maradim. You can also enjoy discovering other diving spots in Kuwait, like Taylor’s Rock near Qaruh, and even join them on a seasonal trip to the Red Sea. For several decades, if not centuries, diving was the main source of livelihood for many in Kuwait. We’ve read the stories in literature and have seen theatrical reenactments. Most memorably, the musical Memoirs of a Sailor featured an epic diving journey that is still experienced to this day. Written by the poet Mohammed Al-Fayez, composed by musician Ghannam Al-Daikan, and most recently dramatized and scripted by novelist Saud Al-Sanousi, the story immortalizes the lives of sailors and divers and their risky existence. In searching for pearls and other bounties found in the sea, they endangered their lives on a daily basis before journeying back inland to provide for themselves and their families. But, diving has changed throughout the years, it is now a passion clearly seen within every instructor at Bubbles, who are also part of the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). Abdulrahman Al-Sarheed showed us that there’s a huge diving community in Kuwait, and we saw it once we arrived at our destination just by Qaruh island where everyone was greeting each other. Every boat was there for one reason, and that is to scuba dive! Joining one of their weekend trips was an absolute joy. We headed out at 10 AM from the Fahaheel Sea Club where the boat that was built and designed for carrying all of our diving gear, safety and overall comfort was waiting for us. After one hour, we arrived and stopped the boat by Qaruh island for the divers to get their outfits on, strap on their tanks, masks, fins, have a final check on everything. They then proceeded to divide themselves into groups with their instructors to take a dive. The water was still and calm, and we instantly knew that it was going to be a perfect dive as we waited for our turn to dip. Since this is a complete beginners experience, we were allowed to do a “Discover Scuba Dive” known in PADI as DSD. Typically, you’re not 40
supposed to go on a proper dive until you’ve taken the proper classes and courses beforehand to gradually build up your confidence and expertise in diving. Yet, when our turn came around, and we started strapping on the diving gear that was kindly provided to us by Bubbles, the excitement along with the fear, began to kick in. But our instructors, Tharwat Alarabi, Abdulrahman Al-Onaizi, Mohammad Khaja, and Muna Furani were extremely patient, and guided us step by step the whole time. First, it was undeniably claustrophobic, and the fear of completely immersing yourself underwater, trying to equalize the pressure and giving in took a few minutes of adjusting. But once you let go and follow the instructor’s guidance, going deeper only got better and more beautiful. We were supposed to dive till 5 or 6 meters down, but
we managed to go almost 12 meters below the surface. Watching the coral reef, and swimming with different types of sea creatures made everything worthwhile and the entire experience was incredibly freeing! We stayed under for almost 30 minutes, exploring everything we could see. After that it was time to simply relax, enjoy the sun and the beauty of the vast waters in front of us before heading back to land while having emmawash (with shrimp) for lunch that was heavenly made by one of the divers, Mariam. If you’re feeling adventurous as we are this season, then diving should definitely be one of those activities to try and cross out of your bucket list. PORSCHE CENTRE KUWAIT WELCOMES THE NEW 911 An amazing car just got even better
By bazaar staff
50
Faster, more powerful and, more efficient than ever before, the eighth generation of the Porsche 911 has arrived in Kuwait. Revealed at a special event held by Porsche Centre Kuwait, Behbehani Motors Company, at the showroom, two variants, the rear-wheel drive 911 Carrera S and the all-wheel drive 911 Carrera 4S, highlighted the design and performance evolution of the brand’s most iconic sports car. The rear-engine model range has been redesigned and now showcases a more muscular look that pays tribute to its past, while also embracing the future with technology woven into its DNA. [Continued...]
51
Speaking during the launch event, Callum Bottomley, General Manager of Porsche Centre Kuwait, said: “Just like the first generation, the latest 911 is a sports car for the new era. Our icon has once again evolved and is now more powerful, more emotional, and more efficient than its predecessors. It is the best 911 Porsche has ever produced and this eighth generation maintains the 911’s status as a pure driver's car that also offers everyday usability and unique design. As such, I am delighted to announce that the 911 Carrera S and the 911 Carrera 4S are now available here in Kuwait. The turbocharged flat-six engine of both models now produces 450 hp. This corresponds to an increase of 30 hp compared with the previous generation. The two 911 variants beat the four-second mark for acceleration from zero to 100 km/h: the rear-wheel drive 911 Carrera S needs 3.7 seconds and the 911 Carrera 4S, with all-wheel drive, just 3.6 seconds. This makes both models 0.4 seconds faster than their predecessors. The optional Sport Chrono Package reduces the sprint by a further 0.2 seconds. Power in the new models is delivered by a newly developed eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) dual-clutch transmission. Top speeds are now measured at 308 km/h for the 911 Carrera S and 306 km/h for the all-wheel drive version. The fuel consumption (NEDC-correlated) of the 52
911 Carrera S is 8.9 l/100 km, while the 911 Carrera 4S records this figure as 9.0 l/100 km. The new 911’s silhouette remains iconic with an exterior design that draws on its earlier generations, making it familiar and yet undoubtedly new. This eighth incarnation is more assertive, with significantly wider wheel housings arch over the 20-inch front wheels and 21-inch rear wheels. The rear end is now the same width across all models, highlighting the slimline centre section. At the front, the body is 45 mm wider. Electrical pop-out handles in the doors emphasise the tapered and smooth side contour, while a bonnet with a pronounced recess evokes the design of the first 911 generations. At the rear, all models feature a rear significantly wider, variableposition rear spoiler and the seamless, elegant light strip. Apart from the front and rear sections, the entire outer shell is now made from aluminium. The completely new interior is characterised by the clear and straight lines of the dashboard with recessed instruments, inspired by the 911 models from the 1970s. Alongside the central rev counter – typical for Porsche – two thin, frameless displays supply information to the driver. The centre screen of the Porsche Communication Management (PCM)
is now 10.9 inches and can be operated easily and without distraction thanks to the new interior design. Located underneath this there is a compact switch unit with five buttons for direct access to important vehicle functions. The seats have also been fundamentally modified. The new 911 advances driving dynamics with the new mixed size tire configuration, with 20-inch wheels on the front axle and 21-inch wheels on the rear axle. At the same time, the tires on the rear drive-axle are significantly wider than on the front wheels. The combination results in increased stability, traction and balance while reduced understeer and oversteer improve safety. The refined chassis design is completed by the next generation of Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which has been extensively developed for the new 911. In a world first, Porsche has developed the Wet mode, included as standard. This function detects water on the road, preconditions the control systems accordingly and warns the driver, who can then set up the vehicle for enhanced safety, by simply pushing a button or using the mode switch on the steering wheel (Sport Chrono Package).
The new optional LED matrix headlights with PDLS Plus are an eye-catching development. The energy center of the Porsche Dynamic Lighting System matrix headlights is made up of 84 individual LEDs. The generated light beam corresponds in range and intensity to laser light. This is distributed so that the driver always benefits from maximum illumination of the road, without dazzling or disturbing other road users. The new Porsche 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S are available now at Porsche Centre Kuwait and retail for KWD 37,300 and KWD 39,600 respectively.

GO WITH THE FLOW
Learning to surf at the new Kuwait Towers Flow House By bazaar staff
We were super excited to find out that Flow House was a lot closer to the bazaar offices than we thought. You now no longer have to consider a trek all the way down south to get your flow on, as Flow House has taken on a new space in the city. We threw on our baggies and eagerly nipped across to the new location to the right-hand side of Aquapark, behind Kuwait Towers. There was already a small queue despite arriving there well before the 10am opening time, and we could see private lessons already taking place as we walked across the astro-turfed bridge that overlooks the park.

Two huge “Flow Riders” loomed up at us, and it was hard to hear anything above the thunderous sound of thousands of liters of water being pumped across the installations surfaces, a number of jets producing hard wake. We’re totally amped! Kids were surfing like it was California's Venice Beach, all sun-bleached hair and tanned skin jumping on and off boards with practiced ease. This can’t be too hard. Having said that, I still decided to ask another bazaarite to tighten my swimsuit straps as much as they could go. One wrong jet in the right place and the lot would be off. The instructors told us to gently take their hands as, having placed our feet in the right positions to stand on the narrow surf board, they slowly backed us into the water jet stream, “lean on your back foot” they said encouragingly. Like he’d been doing it for years, our
graphic-designer was practically hanging ten, too cool for school. Well, if he can do it! Confidently, I go next. WHOOSH! Feet knocked out from under me, landing on my back, ankles uphill, head bouncing off the ground, and chlorine water rushing up my nose, the sheer juice of jets unceremoniously lifting, dragging and dumping me, and I slam into the inflatable barrier at the top of the ‘Flow Rider’. I take a moment to take in everything that’s just happened, as I feel for any broken bones. Body boarding looks good right about now. Body boarding is infinitely easier as it involves starting prostrate anyway, and the ‘boogie’ board is twice the width of the standing boards. Starting from the bottom of the Flow Rider, little by little you nudge yourself into the jets. Clasping both sides of the board you lean into whichever side you wish to go. Easy peasy!

Pleased with myself, I look up and see a bazaar writer, hitting air having launched herself from over the top of the Flow Rider’s crest, landing on her knees, turning 360, and then expertly slaloming across the face of the ‘wave; what would be a ‘piste’ if this was a snow run. Perhaps this is a younger person’s game as they have yet to learn about consequences, and I can only envision broken bones and a concussion in my immediate future. I retire, annoyed that this sport has gotten the better of me, and watch the others’ progress. This sport is exhausting and if you’re not already fit, surfing in these extreme conditions should get you pretty ripped. I am almost certain that if you can get the hang of these jets, then you can pretty much handle anything a real wave will bring you. The look of sheer concentration on the face of that same writer who, moments ago was flying through the air, is something to behold and with baited breath you know she is going to get to stand on her own this time, until a body boarder dashes that dream and they both wipe out. “I was scared,” confides the writer adding, “It would’ve only taken being only a little more confident enough to relax and allow me to let go of the instructor’s hand.” But it is not so easy to ‘relax the body’ and even just the slightest fingertip to fingertip touch somehow gives the beginner confidence to remain upright, so the instructors empathetically do not leave your side before you’re ready. It’s tempting to stay in the sun on the Flow Rider for long periods, because you want to master the challenge, but you must take time out to drink plenty of water. There are cafes around where you can get food as well as drinks and it is worth planning to be here for a number of hours if you decide to give Flow House a go. You can get one-on-one lessons here, or have an instructor oversee your group of six participants. Instructors also double as trained Life Guards and you can clearly see at least a few of them at any one time. There are other attractions within this area, a pool and an underwater café to explore, and this makes for good family fun and well as for groups of like-minded dudes and dudettes.

Vacations are about doing something new, and switching up your routine. This year we're up for something completely different than our annual summer beach vacation. While we love chilling on white sandy beaches and enjoying the sound of lapping waves we are always ready to get out of our comfort zone to avoid the dreaded holiday ennui, so we’re skipping summer and heading for our favorite season, fall. Every year from late June to the end of September, the Dhofar Province in Oman undergoes an amazing transformation known locally as “Khareef.” A colloquial term meaning 'fall' in Arabic, Khareef refers to a fascinating weather pattern in which the coastal fringe of Dhofar experiences a run-in with the Indian Ocean’s monsoon season. The weather is much cooler with temperatures rarely rising above 27°C. But it's not just about escaping the heat, the vibe changes, and the locals consider it to be the best time of the year. This is true, especially for tourists like us, who stepped onto the plane in Kuwait where the sun is scorching. Once at Salalah, the air is balmy, and the weather will surprise you with periods of drizzling and rain along with mist and fog. The Dhofar Province makes up almost a third of Oman's land area and boasts an impressive and diverse biosphere. Hundreds of kilometers of coastline seamlessly blend into mountains and deserts. With mountains reaching up to 1,500 meters and an abundance of rain in Khareef, you will be amazed by the waterfalls
60
cascading down and forming giant pools of turquoise water. You will marvel at the thick, lush, vibrant green vegetation blanketing the landscape as far as the eye can see. It is no surprise then that the city of Salalah has been named the 2019 Capital of Arab Summer resorts by The Arab Tourism Organisation. Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara matches nature’s gift of beauty with luxury and class for an unforgettable stay. The architecture was inspired by ancient coastal villages and reflects Oman’s heritage and history. Carved wooden doors, white-washed buildings and traditional flat roofs are just some of the elements that pay homage to the rich culture. Guests will love staying in one of the 88 private pool villas featuring one or two bedrooms. The resort even has a Royal Beach Villa offering three bedrooms, prime ocean views, a large terrace and a 40 sqm private pool. Travelling with young children can be challenging but the resort takes care of the little ones for you. A dedicated kids club provides a safe and creative
environment for imaginations to run wild. Engaging activities such as movie nights, treasure hunts and cookery classes will keep them occupied and happy. The teens club is the perfect space for young adults to socialize whilst playing the latest game consoles, table tennis, air hockey and billiards. Chilling at the resort all day is tempting, but Khareef in Salalah is the perfect time to visit the verdant mountains. The wildlife is diverse and interesting, the scenery is spectacular and the adventure is unending. For visitors who want more, the annual Khareef Festival, which runs from mid-July to August, celebrates the monsoon season with an array of concerts, traditional performances and cultural displays. To catch the best sites, book a tour at the hotel or with the Salalah Guru for a private, tailored excursion. As lifetime locals, these guides know where all the action is and are ready to impart their knowledge with genuine passion and expert flair. After you have tired yourself out with all the fun outdoor activities head to the Anantara Spa. Along with

The Frankincense Ritual is a must-try, proven to rejuvenate skin, the region’s most famous ingredient is used in a unique massage experience. Two therapists perform four, hand-synchronized, massage techniques over the entire body. A vacation isn’t complete without experiencing local cuisine and Oman’s history as a trading nation has helped shape its eclectic approach to food. Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara is home to three restaurants which offer guests the very best of local and international cuisine served with the warm Omani hospitality. Sakalan, or ‘The Land of Frankincense’ is an allday dining restaurant, with open kitchens and theme night buffets serving an array of cuisines from near and far. Enjoy global dishes from authentic Arabic to fiery Indian and contemporary Western, all set by the infinity pool. The resort’s signature restaurant, Mekong specializes in South East Asian cuisine. The relaxed beachside dining restaurant Al Mina, ‘The Port’ in Arabic, is a wonderful journey into the Mediterranean’s zesty flavors. Whether you are looking for a romantic spot or a more relaxed terrace dinner with shisha, there is a restaurant and experience for you. Alternatively, for a fully immersive experience try the Khareef picnics. The resort offers a fantastic picnic menu, which includes dishes that can be packed and taken away when you go on excursions. The staff will pack all of your needs including a cool box, utensils and rugs to make your meal as comfortable as possible. There are so many scenic locations in parks, wadis and near the waterfalls that would make a perfect backdrop for an outdoor lunch. You can even rent chairs, shades and other equipment if you want to go all out. If you desire extra privacy, then order in from the extensive in-room dining menu and enjoy your meal in your villa's large family majlis or al fresco on your villa's private pool terrace. THE POWER OF SYMBOLS
No one wants to talk about suicide. Ever. But we must By Dr Susannah Joy Schuilenberg
It’s possible that you haven’t seen a semicolon tattoo but if you haven’t it’s probably because it’s covered up (it’s Kuwait after all) or you just didn’t notice. If you don’t know what a semicolon is, here is its definition. Semicolon: A punctuation mark (;) indicating a pause, typically between two main clauses, that is more pronounced than that indicated by a comma. This month’s column is about suicide…or more specifically, not completing suicide. It’s okay if you don’t feel like reading the rest of this article but take a deep breath and read it anyway. Suicide happens even in Kuwait. It is the stigma associated with mental health issues that often contributes to the sense of hopelessness that people experience in asking for help. Having lived in the Middle East long enough to gain an experiential understanding of the culture and of the beliefs and attitudes that permeate the social fabric of life, I am confident in saying, “You need to read this.” So, what’s a semicolon have to do with this uncomfortable and emotionally-provocative topic? Project Semicolon was born from a social media movement in 2013. Those who subscribe to the philosophy describe themselves as a "…movement dedicated to presenting hope and love to those who are struggling with depression, suicide, addiction, and self-injury. Project Semicolon exists to encourage, love, and inspire." But why a semicolon? "A semicolon is used when an author could have ended the sentence but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life." Those who have nearly completed suicide but who didn’t succeed have adopted the semicolon as a reminder that life is precious. Their life is precious. A reminder that their story isn’t finished yet; there’s reason to live. Mental health issues can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime. No one is immune. Read that again. No.One.Is.Immune. That means it’s a good idea to know what resources are available in your community and it’s a good idea to know what to say to someone who tells you they are feeling suicidal. Or, as is more likely to happen in Kuwait, hints at how they are feeling. Would you recognize when your friend/ sister/brother is talking about “wanting to be free of this pain,” or “hating life,” or “too tired to go on,” that they may be referring to suicide? In 30+ years of working with people who are struggling with the wounding that is part of being human, I’ve never had a client struggling with thoughts of suicide who actually wanted to be dead. Rather, these individuals experiencing overwhelming
62
emotional pain just wanted it to stop. That’s all they were thinking about. They weren’t thinking about the permanence of completing suicide, the pain of those left behind, or the stigma their families might face. They were simply intent on escaping a present reality so painful that ‘not existing’ seemed preferable. Let me say it again – when emotional pain is overwhelming and there doesn’t seem to be any end in sight, suicide begins to seem like a viable option. This is true of individuals in every culture, every religion, every socio-economic status. Denying this reality puts real people at real risk in real time. In the past, reported suicide rates have been low in Islamic countries and being Muslim was seen as an “inoculation” against such events, however research data is clear; suicide is on the rise, even in countries which are predominantly Muslim. The process of modernization (three inter-related processes of industrialization, urbanization, and secularization) appears to be eroding the ties of the individual to society and this has led to questioning of religion and weakening of faith. (Essentially, a lot of fancy words for “suicide happens everywhere.”) Mental health issues do not respect any lines drawn anywhere, for any reason. No one wants to believe that someone they know may be thinking of suicide. Nevertheless, it happens, even in Kuwait.
Talk about it. Talk to friends. Pay attention to the language you hear. ‘Hopelessness’ is the primary reason individuals attempt suicide. Ending the stigma of mental health issues and offering effective support to those seeking help will go a long way towards ensuring the semicolon tattoo remains a rare thing in Kuwait. There are many qualified and effective mental health professionals and services available in Kuwait. Why not take the time to find out who and where they are? The Middle East Psychological Association's website, www.mepa.me/search_directory.php, is a good place to start. It’s not a comfortable subject. I get that… But it is a life-altering issue, for everyone. Be brave – arm yourself with real information and talk about it. You might save a life.

MASERATI LEVANTE: THE ALLEGRA ANTINORI ONE OF ONE The future of luxury car customizations By bazaar staff
At the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, Maserati presented an absolute novelty: the Levante ONE OF ONE, a foretaste of Maserati's future customization program. The booth showcased a Maserati Levante ONE OF ONE entirely customized by Allegra Antinori, Vice President of Italian wine firm Marchesi Antinori, world leader in quality wines. The Centro Stile Maserati assisted Allegra Antinori in the configuration of her car, in a genuine process of shared creation, a concept which is much more than the mere choice of accessories.
64
[Continued...]
65
In this first example of the new customization process, every detail Allegra Antinori defined is closely linked to a facet of her personality. The external configuration is a distinctive tri-coat green, a special, unique color inspired by the shades of the Tuscan hills. The external details (door handles, side air vents and grille inserts) are finished in dark look chrome, toning to perfection with the body color to give the Maserati SUV a truly sophisticated overall look. The interiors of Allegra Antinori's ONE OF ONE feature many unique combinations, which have never previously been used on a Levante. The lower dashboard, door panel, central tunnel unit and seat color references the warm hues of the earth of Tuscan vineyards. The unique "Pieno Fiore" leather used for the seats is another exquisite choice: it is colored with aniline and oils, with no surface finishes, but is ornamented with classical button-tufted effect 3D embroidery. The technique used provides exceptional depth of color and a very smooth tactile sensation, and like a fine wine, this leather will simply improve with age.
66
The central tunnel is in a special finish using a material that is new even for Maserati: carbon fiber with copper wire and high gloss finish. Here again, there are clear references to the Antinori estate and the concept of Cor-Ten, the weathering steel used for the construction of the Antinori Winery in the Chianti Classico area, midway between Florence and Siena. The 100% natural mohair wool mats provide the final, exclusive touch to a tailor-made customization with attention to every single detail. Maserati wanted to provide show goers with an interactive experience by involving them with the working tables of Italian products of Excellence. Long-time partner and a leader in the field of men’s luxury clothing, Ermenegildo Zegna, was present. Along with two other leading artisanal firms in their field: Giorgetti, the internationally renowned Italian woodworking company, known for its furniture and unique design pieces, and De Castelli, a leading metalworking firm, specializing in the production of unique home design accessories, custom surfaces and projects.
[Continued...]
67
The stand provided an interactive tour through three different thematic areas, each of them with a dedicated working table. Each area featured a display of materials and components that bear witness to the unending quest for excellence, style and originality, typical of products designed and Made in Italy, and therefore typical of Maserati. Speaking of innovation and design, when it comes to customizing the stand, for the first time ever in Maserati’s Customization Area, there was a D-Table, the only multi-touch, interactive table. Sate of the art software enabled customers to configure their cars by selecting external and internal combinations, colors and materials with just a touch of the screen. The Ermenegildo Zegna Working Table illustrated the Zegna-Maserati tailoring atelier, from the preliminary phase of weaving the PELLETESSUTATM using spools of sturdy bands of leather, through to the rolls of resulting woven material in the Maserati leather colors (black, tan, red and dark brown). Like a fine, made-to-measure shoe, PELLETESSUTATM adapts its shape to the sinuous surface of the Quattroporte Maserati dashboard, the featured element of the interior, over which the PELLETESSUTATM fits perfectly; the threedimensionality of the woven strips of leather create a tactile surface for this component, restoring light and texture, imbuing the volume of this component with expressive force. The table also displayed five decorative Maserati Levante door panel trim elements, which reveal the opportunities for chromatic customization of the Maserati PELLETESSUTATM. The PELLETESSUTATM tiles represent studies and design research between the Ermenegildo Zegna Style Centre and Maserati, exploring jacquard designs that mix colors, graphic elements and patterns with an eye to potential customizations. The sketches depict the research carried out by the Centro Stile Maserati into textures, their visual application to the various components and efforts to balance and harmonize colors within the context of the car interior. The Giorgetti working table featured outstanding woodworking and cabinetmaking skills. By means of three Quattroporte dashboard inserts Giorgetti illustrated how wood was the star of the show when it comes to Maserati components, how initial mechanical processes are followed by manual ones, operations like precision carving work, turning and modelling in three of the 12 Giorgetti wood species: Ash, Walnut and Maple. The table also featured a wooden panel in antiqued ash with Shibori decorations, the inspiration for the two Quattroporte dashboard fascias which featured this technique in a micro-shibori version, styled and expressed all-over pattern sections. The smallest dashboard inserts feature the same treatment for larger elements on the dashboard in antiqued Ash burl wood and natural Ash burl wood. Finally, the sheets of veneer completed the table as elements of stylistic research in which Giorgetti and Maserati experiment with wood species which are transformed into graphic landscapes in the case 68
of the Ziricote wood, or dynamic textural effects in the case of the Tanganika Frise. The third working table illustrated the dynamic encounter between the Italian virtuosity of De Castelli, when it comes to creative metal surfacing, and Maserati’s eagerness to embrace and interpret this poetry in metal. The sophistication of the metal working processes applied to its interior components (the dashboard fascia and the pedal trims) serves to further enhance the interior, not only formally but also by introducing a sense of poetry and textural allure. A storytelling inspired by the chromatic richness of the Italian sea- and landscape. The four sheets of metal demonstrated the process of working the semi-finished material. The sheet of raw material in its pure form is subjected to a manual hammering phase, fashioning it into the shape of the Quattroporte Maserati dashboard. The featured element of this interior, is perfectly suited to communicating the subtle chromatic and poetic transitions of the DeMarea finish, selected for this exquisite work of art. The other two elements illustrate the phases of oxidation and surface transformation of the brass: human dexterity, creativity and sense of aesthetic pleasure decide when to stop time and
halt the process of oxidation, ascertaining the perfect moment for obtaining the DeMarea gradient. This process is simply defining the uniqueness of each detail. On the artisan’s working table and creative space, the process of storytelling proceeds with the help of tools or historical instruments, where metal sheet is shaped into a work of art. Subjected to various surface treatments, the sheets of metal convey the excellence of the De Castelli world, not to mention Maserati’s flair for style. The working table also displays a Quattroporte dashboard fascia with the DeMarea Iron, DeMarea Copper and DeMarea Brass finish. The DeMarea trilogy illustrates a single process composed of superimposed, polysemous manual oxidation operations. These are all inspired by Italian sea- and landscapes, creating “watercolor” effects, conveying highly textural sensations and evocations of waves lapping against Venice’s signature mooring posts. The encounter between De Castelli and Maserati also expresses itself in the pedals. These key elements for operating a car have been embellished with a hand-applied oxidation treatment, boasting a snazzier, more sophisticated flair in the DeMarea
Copper kit, combined with the luxurious pad in vegetaltanned Saddle Extra leather, which is inspired by the soles of made-to-measure shoes. While a more “art workshop” flair distinguishes the DeMarea Iron kit, brandishing logos engraved with the Maserati name. The sketches depict the research for texture inspiration carried out by the Centro Stile Maserati. Their visual application to the various components balance and harmonize colors within the context of the car interior. Maserati is constantly pushing the boundaries of craftsmanship that is custom-made to suit your taste and preferences and their stand at the Geneva International Motor Show was just another testament to that.

FINDING FIJI
A family’s vacation gone full circle By Anne Z. Cooke and Steve Haggerty
"You're up early," said Dillon, joining us at the breakfast table at Matamanoa Island Resort, in Fiji, piling his wet suit and swim fins on the chair where we'd be sure to see them. "Did Dad tell you? Blue sky, no wind, a perfect day for a shark dive?" He paused, waiting for an answer. "I know, you guessed it. Occam's razor, huh?" he said, grinning. "You don't mind being alone, do you?" We were glad he cared. But no, we could never be lonely on Matamanoa Island, in the Mamanuca Archipelago, in the central South Pacific. If we needed company, the resorts' other guests were on hand,
72
not to mention our family, three generations of us on vacation together. And there was the island to explore, a poster-perfect South Pacific hideaway. A limestone cone sticking up out of the sea, it was an encyclopedia of nature, from birds and fish, to an explosion of bright flowers and craggy shade trees. Walking barefoot along the shore, on the powdery soft sand, you'd see crabs digging holes, fish in the shallows, and a hoard of wave-tumbled sea shells and coral, washed up from deeper water. Did we feel left behind, now that the kids were growing up? For a nano-second, maybe. But in truth, it was nice to be alone, no longer in charge of organizing these annual family trips, or planning the days. We could swim, climb to the summit, or read under an umbrella, as the moment dictated.
Our first family trip, more than a decade ago, was a last-minute idea, patched together on a whim. But adventuring together proved such a rewarding way to stay connected that it gradually became a tradition. When the kids were toddlers, in St. Lucia, we built sand castles together while their parents slipped away for a sunset cruise. In Toronto, we played Marco Polo in the pool, while the moms and dads enjoyed a candlelit dinner. Six years later we climbed the pyramids together, at Teotihuacan, in Mexico. But Dillon, now 20, was long past making sand castles. Like his cousins, he wanted to ski the moguls, fish in Alaska and climb Colorado's "fourteeners." While he studied the menu, we stepped outside, bending an ear for the chirps and twitters overhead, and catching our breath as the sun
peeked over the horizon. Sending gold and amber rays across the water, it illuminated each nearby island, one after another. On our first Fiji trip, we did the tourist route: botanical gardens, visits to native villages, a daycruise on the Sigatoka River and snorkeling off the hotel beach. And by the third visit we were ready for bigger stuff: rafting on the Upper Navua River, kayaking on the Luva River in the Namosi Highlands, hiking to waterfalls and climbing Mount Tomanivi, in the Koroyanitu National Heritage Park, at 4,344 feet, Fiji's highest peak. But a family trip to Fiji always seemed too far away, and too expensive. Until recently, that is, when a Fiji Airways promotion popped up in our email, advertising round-trip, nonstop tickets from Los Angeles to Nadi for about $750 each, half off the regular price, an offer too generous to ignore. The Fiji Airways overnight flight, 11 hours from LAX to Nadi, is painless. You have time to read, eat, watch a movie, and then get a good night's sleep. Departing shortly before midnight, it lands at 5 a.m. the next morning, but two days later on the calendar: you've crossed the International Dateline. Hailing a couple of cabs, we headed for Denarau and the South Seas Ferry dock, where we bought tickets and ate breakfast while waiting to board the ferry. Once on board, we hustled up to the top and found seats, the best place for views of the Mamanucas's green islands and the world's most beautiful peacock-blue water. After an hour out and hundreds of selfies, son Paul, carrying his out-of-date PADI diving certificate, spoke up. "You won't mind, will you, if we go diving?" he said. "I'll have to take a refresher course. And if Dillon wants to finish the course, we'll be diving every day. But you couldn't find a better place to do it. Look at this water, the visibility, it's like glass! And it's so calm!" Two hours later the ferry reached Castaway. Climbing out on the sand we were thrilled (for the 30th time, at least) to see that the staff was waiting, gathered to sing Isa Lei, the Fijian welcome song. We melted with joy. If they'd tried to sell us the island we would have written a check. Our son, meanwhile, made a beeline for the dive shop, 20 feet away on the beach. That evening, when we gathered for our first candle-lit dinner in Castaway's inviting, newly designed restaurant, overlooking the blue-green sea, Dillon, beaming with anticipation, announced that they'd all signed up for the dive course. If they were happy, we were happy. We weren't sure what we'd find at Matamanoa, next on our itinerary, but it proved as marvelous as Castaway, just different. Catering to guests ages 16 and older, people who come every year, Matamanoa reminded us of a private club, where everyone knows everyone else and we'd been invited to join. The cocktail hour began on time and was followed by a single dinner seating, with everyone served at once. The ocean-view "villas" were inviting, and the elegant new hilltop suites were the latest in comfort, privacy and spectacular views. Meanwhile, Dillon and
the cousins headed straight for the dive shop, for the next round of lessons. Our last island resort, the Sheraton Tokoriki, surprised us. We'd expected a hotel, but relieved to find a long, low modern building, with an office, gift shop, several dining rooms and a beautiful pool, all overlooking a long beach. The bures, some with plunge pools, formed a small village. The property, swept clean in 2016 by Cyclone Winston, looked bare, and recently planted bushes and trees were still small. But the dining areas were open all day and the pool
deck, looking over the ocean, was our meeting place after the dive boat and the divers returned. On our last day, sad to be leaving, we went for one last ocean swim, walking out to a sandy spot where everyone hung out, splashing and bobbing about, wallowing in that delicious warm water, like a giant bathtub. For an hour we bobbed up and down, talking, remembering each day what we'd seen and laughing over the funny things we'd done. When we close our eyes right now, we can feel it all over again.

2008 MAYBACH EXELERO
CUSTOM AIRBUS 380
RALPH LAUREN CROCODILE DOG CARRIER
If you’re planning on jetting off somewhere out of this world, you’ll need the start of the journey to be fabulous too; a gorgeous car to get you to the private jet. How about the world’s most expensive one-off “production” car ever produced? The Maybach Exelero is a 690-hp supercar made by DaimlerChrysler. Powered by a twin-turbo V12, it can reach 218 mph. American rapper Birdman bought it in 2011 but couldn’t afford the payments, so now it belongs with another, more successful [as Beyoncé’s husband] rapper: Jay-Z. You would need to top the KD 2.5 million 2011 price tag to take it off Jay-Z’s hands, if Blue Ivy would even let you that is.
Complete with onboard parking space, which is a great place to park the Maybach Exelero, the five masterbedroomed airbus is the world’s largest private jet. For such a large jet it comes with a surprisingly small price tag of a mere KD 153 million. Bring twenty of your closest hangers-on because this custom aeroplane has twenty additional state rooms. Unfortunately, only ten guests can fit in the grand piano concert hall though, so enjoy the sycophancy as they battle for their place. If it all gets too much, enjoy the marble finished Turkish bath steam room for spa treatments. A spiral staircase links the three floors in the plane together. Next time, put in an elevator.
When traveling with your pampered pooch you’ll need a dog carrier that looks as stylish as your normal handbag; high end quality that Americans think Ralph Lauren is. This bag is constructed with the 100% choicest parts of African crocodile, carefully handselected by experts, which most likely accounts for its KD 5,500 price. Danger money. Lightly padded with a cotton twill interior, it has a zip-around opening at the top and at one end, providing two ways for accessing your pet. Mesh panelling and an optional covered pocket are at the other end. The two upper purse handles feature a luggage tag, a functional brass lock and a detachable key fob. Just don’t lose those keys.
111SKIN LUNAR 28 DAYS
BARRINGTON 12 WATCH WINDER SAFE
GOLDEN PHAT STACKS
Constant travel takes its toll on even the most regularly massaged, primped and preened skin. In just one month, hence the name in case you’d missed the connection; we know you’re not used to these ‘connections’ as you obviously get direct flights, 111SKIN can fix aging, hyperpigmentation, dryness and free-radical damage. For KD 5,880 your skin will be plumped and brightened for an entire year. Let’s also take a moment to enjoy the luxurious packaging of these vials, making this set perfectly suited aesthetically for both men and women. Suitable for oily skin, dry skin, combination skin, normal skin, sensitive skin, mature skin, and acne prone skin but mostly, whichever skin your wallet is made out of.
This compact piece is made from steel and tempered glass but weighs only 35kg so you can take it with you when you travel on your private jet. The KD 1,220 price tag delivers exactly what a hipster wrister wants; vegan leather cladding. Featuring ultra-quiet Japanese Mabuchi motors, not only will you sleep well at night knowing your time pieces are safe as well as being kept in good working order, there will be little noise from the constantly ticking over winder. Keep your horological collection to good time, with twelve individually programmable rotors. No matter which time zone you’re in, you can grab a watch and go, confident the time has been kept accurate.
Escape the July heat and travel to Antipodean parts where the seasons are reversed. But, don’t worry you can still indulge in that most popular of Kuwaiti dishes, the burger. For example, in Victoria, try the “Golden Phat Stack”. Patties of beef and chicken are topped with bacon, cheese and jalapeños and nestle inside a 24-carat gold bun for the bargain price of KD 20. If you want to try a different burger filling just add the phatted golden carb to any burger for only KD 11. Need more 24K? Then for a very reasonable KD 6 order the 24K Ferrero Rocher milkshake, a rich concoction of hazelnut, Ferrero Rocher ice cream, Nutella, and 24K coated Ferrero Rocher.
THIS MONTH’S FEATURE: HURTIGRUTEN EXPEDITION CRUISE Indulge your ego by thinking that you are helping to save the planet by flying your jet across to Scandinavia and booking onto the MS Roald Amundsen. This ship new to the fleet, utilizes a battery hybrid-powered propulsion system for sustainable sailing, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Inside, Scandinavian materials create warm, comfortable cabins and public areas. A scandalous snippet at KD 13,800, you’ll enjoy an Artic Superior Cabin on the 24 days long trip. Explore the North West Passage without destroying the environment in the process, experience the raw and daunting beauty of truly wild terrain on a rarelytravelled voyage. Even today, few ships have the capability to navigate this isolated sea passage that cuts through the wild and remote Arctic beauty of North America.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS
With collections designed to bring you joy by Williams Sonoma Home By bazaar staff
There is something about summer that makes you want to take another look at your home. Perhaps it’s just because you can see everything so much more clearly now, as the light is so bright. Or maybe it’s just that because everyone around you is a little bit more relaxed, it gives you the energy to consider making some changes in the home or starting a new home project. Williams Sonoma Home is here to help! For over fifty years Williams Sonoma has become synonymous with high quality crafted interiors for the American home, and for the last seven years this has also been true in Kuwait. In 2012 the 11,000-sq.-ft. Grand Avenue store was the first Williams Sonoma to open in the Middle East, and the only one to be found outside of North America. Impeccable craftsmanship
78
continues to be of supreme importance to Williams Sonoma, and they seek out this same vision when sourcing furnishings from skilled craftsmen across the globe. Craftsmen who still insist on artfully making furniture using traditional methods which have been honed to perfection over generations. The in-house designers at Williams Sonoma, who believe home is at the heart of everything, create unique collections which can help you to realize the perfect aesthetic for your home that reflects your own personal style. The finest materials ensure the longevity of the aesthetic and pieces you choose, or at least until you will want to enlist the expertise of a Williams Sonoma design consultant during an in-home visit to breathe even more life into your home once again. You can take pleasure in choosing from many beautifully designed and well-considered collections, each one with their own distinct heritage influence. The polished nickel frame and clean lines of the Mercer Dining Table wouldn’t look out of place in a
Corbusier Villa, an Art Deco theme abundantly evident in the purist shape, and the table is indeed informed by 1930’s design. As is the style of the accompanying Dining Side Chair; nickel legs polished to a high shine and lacquered to preserve the finish. The padded seat and the back are made from Tuscan leather and again cut and raised into a typically geometric form, but the strong shape and use of color hints more at a modern interpretation of Bauhaus. A note of interest, the Mercer table in the smallest size, works wonderfully as a desk. Moving away from dining and into the living room, Williams Sonoma concentrates on comfort. The Windsor sofa is, as the royal name suggests, elegant. It is rather reminiscent of a Chesterfield, with its button-tufted back and sides. Deep set, so you can enjoy sitting back to relax, the foam padding supported by hand-tied springs ensures to keep you lounging happily for hours. The traditional Chesterfield-type element has been placed within a modern, clean-line
profile making the design endlessly versatile. Goose Down throw pillows, tailored in a matching upholstery fabric, add another layer of comfort to this impressive piece which sits majestically atop solid, oak block feet. Finally, when it comes to retiring for the evening, who wouldn’t want to luxuriate in a Broderick Bed. Featuring the natural beauty of wood grain with mirrored ash veneers the style is block cut in a stunning geometric pattern. The grey finish is reminiscent of the most beautiful driftwood, lending the piece organic appeal, despite it being so sharply cut. An intriguing juxtaposition making the piece suitable for most bedrooms as it complements both classic and modern decor. And you can be sure that each bed, entirely handcrafted by skilled artisans is unique, due to naturally occurring variations in wood grain patterns. Ultimately, if you need a fresh perspective on your home be it for the dining room, living room or anywhere else in the home where you wish to make your space feel warm and inviting, you can do no wrong visiting Williams Sonoma Home. Drop in or schedule an appointment with expertly trained design consultants today. Williams Sonoma is located at Grand Avenue – The Avenues, and is open Sunday-Wednesday - 10am to 11pm and Thursday - Saturday – 10am to midnight. EVERYTHING IS F*CKED: A BOOK ABOUT HOPE by Mark Manson, Non-Fiction
by Stephen Trzeciak and Anthony Mazzarelli, Non-Fiction
From the author of the international megabestseller The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck comes a counterintuitive guide to the problems of hope. We live in an interesting time. Materially, everything is the best it’s ever been—we are freer, healthier and wealthier than any people in human history. Yet, somehow everything seems to be irreparably and horribly f*cked—the planet is warming, governments are failing, economies are collapsing, and everyone is perpetually offended on Twitter. At this moment in history, when we have access to technology, education and communication our ancestors couldn’t even dream of, so many of us come back to an overriding feeling of hopelessness.

TAKING FUN FARTHER WITH TEKZONE One year older, but still light years into the future By bazaar staff
Fernando Medroa, Vice President of Leisure & Entertainment Division at Alshaya Group
We visited TEKZONE last year when it first opened and thought it was out-of-thisworld fun. It was futuristic, interactive and entertaining for everyone that it immediately became one of our all-time favorite indoor entertainment spots in Kuwait. It has been a year since they opened and we spoke to the Vice President of Leisure & Entertainment Division at Alshaya Group, Fernando Medroa to find out more about what is happening now and what will happen in the future. How would you describe TEKZONE? TEKZONE is the future of fun, the ultimate family entertainment destination. It is a unique platform that stands out from any other family entertainment center. We want to offer everyone a good time in a space that is dynamic, futuristic and most importantly fun. By using Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) attractions with thrill rides, classic games, redemption games and digitally enhanced escape rooms we have created something from the future but today. 82
Where did the idea of TEKZONE stem from? We noticed that there was a lack of entertainment options in Kuwait and Alshaya’s Leisure & Entertainment Division wanted to expand and cater to the needs of the market. We knew that our visitors would want to experience a mix of passive, interactive, and active entertainment, all under one roof. We keep hearing about Zo, who is he? Zo is a cybertronic robot and the face of TEKZONE. He comes from the distant planet Zeta, in the Andromeda galaxy. The planet is populated by the Zetans, a society light years ahead of us in technology - 2.5 million light years, to be exact. They live to play, in every sense of the word. Zo is on a mission to spread fun across the universe. So he used one of Zeta’s wormhole portals to travel back in time and space, from millions of years in the future, to reach his first destination - Earth. He exited the wormhole in the perfect spot... TEKZONE! Zo loves interacting with visitors and taking selfies with them, so don’t be shy if you spot him in the park. There are several VR spots in Kuwait now, what do you think makes TEKZONE different and sets it apart from the rest? First of all TEKZONE is located in The Avenues which is accessible to everyone all over Kuwait and people
can visit regardless of the weather. We have state-of-theart attractions, some of which are the first in the world and others being the first in the Middle East. It is an immersive experience because we use LED screens, 3D mapping and floor projections to bring the space to life which rotate between three different themes; underwater, jungle and futuristic. Just walking around the place is engaging and enthralling. Beyond playing individual games, guests are also playing an over-arching game; Time Mission. When visitors arrive, they get a Time Mission bracelet which they register using their unique avatar and information. Every time they play a game, they collect Crystals which can be used to redeem prizes or free games. Play more, win more! Were any of the games specifically designed for Kuwait? Yes, several! The VR bumper cars are the first of their kind in the world and premiered in TEKZONE. Bumper cars on their own are a staple of everyone’s childhood but the TEKZONE experience is multiplied exponentially by taking you on a fascinating outer space adventure. The Game Changer was specially designed for us too. The room rotates 360 degrees so you can try out four different games in different positions.
Our two next-generation VR Escape rooms are a very unique experience too that were designed for TEKZONE. Enjoy live-action team-based games, discover clues with your team, solve puzzles, and accomplish tasks in under 60 minutes. We’ve coined them Escape Room 2.0, with three digitally enhanced challenges to choose from: Da Vinci, Pirates, and Ancient Egypt. Which game is the most popular? Everyone loves the Infinity Ride, a spinning rollercoaster offering riders a 360°, thrilling experience. TEKZONE is not just for kids, though, as adults especially enjoy our VR attractions like the VR Maze and VR Cinema, since it transports them into an alternate world away from their busy work days and responsibilities. Which game do you enjoy the most? All of the games are unique and enjoyable but my personal favorite is definitely the Finger Coaster, without a doubt. You design the thrill path yourself! In this two-part experience game, draw the roller coaster ride of your dreams as you add in twists, drops, rolls and turns, each more thrilling than the other. So, you have the roller coaster on your fingertips! The fun doesn’t stop there, as you next get to put on your VR headsets and take your seat on a stationary simulator, and allow virtual reality technology to take you on a ride you’ve just designed. It is always exciting since every time is going to be a unique experience. Has there been any new games introduced since the launch? We are constantly on the lookout for new attractions and making new additions to the ones we have, offering our visitors a new experience for every visit. Since opening we added the the VR Maze and Beat Saber, amongst others, all of which have proven to be very popular. We have also introduced birthday parties based on popular demand. Kids wanted to enjoy the TEKZONE experience with their friends on their special day. We offer classic birthday party games such as charades and karaoke and a 1-hour Unlimited Play Card for every child which is good for rides and attractions. Of course, no birthday is complete without a visit from Zo, who will stop by to join the fun and make for memorable selfie pictures. Anything new coming to TEKZONE in the near future that we can share with our readers? We are always working on new things and right now we are planning on expanding in Kuwait and the MENA region and adding new games and attractions. There will also be more to Zo's story in the future. He will be inviting friends from Zeta and we are sure that they will love TEKZONE as much as Zo has and that they just might decide to stay.
Visit TEKZONE in The Forum, Lower Ground Floor – The Avenues. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram on @TEKZONEME to find out more.

LATE NIGHT FEELINGS
HIGH EXPECTATIONS By Mabel

THE AUSTRALIAN COLLEGE OF KUWAIT Start your future on the right track By bazaar staff
High school students face one of life’s toughest decisions, what and where to study next. A university degree is no longer a luxury, and choosing the right school can really shape their future. Academics alone cannot compete in the fast-paced world of today. Therefore, students need experiences and handson learning that is backed by accredited programs to prepare them for the future, whether they decide to enter the job market or become entrepreneurs. The Australian College of Kuwait (ACK) stands out in Kuwait’s sea of educational establishments by providing students with a world-class higher education through international learning partnerships. Established in 2004, ACK was one of the first private universities in the country offering diploma and bachelor’s degree level courses as well as specializations within Engineering, Business, Aviation and Maritime studies. Whether students want to soar in the sky, conquer the world’s oceans, to everything in between, they can find the right degree.
86
Learning at ACK is personalized, each student has an academic advisor who is available for scholastic and career guidance. At the same time, ACK places importance on the overall college experience and accordingly a wide range of sporting and club activities are available so that the students can pursue their hobbies and interests with others and establish lifelong friendships. To prepare students for the real world, the experiential model of learning at ACK enables students to acquire workplace-related skills and attitudes so they are job-ready as soon as they graduate. ACK maintains relationships and partnerships with pioneering firms in different industries to make sure that students are being taught the current skills that are needed in the workplace. These friendships help place students in internships within local and international companies creating the opportunity for them to gain firsthand experience in their desired career field, and eventually secure employment once they graduate. ACK was founded as an institution of experiential learning with the 2+2 model that nurtures the three pillars of requisite knowledge, practical skills and positive attitude in preparation for workplace success. This model enables the
students to acquire a diploma within two years and a bachelor’s degree within an additional two years, which is ACK's niche in Higher Education. Integrating classroom learning with hands-on technical and experimental practice is a philosophy that has contributed to the Institution’s success and to that of its graduates over the years. This underlying pedagogy, along with pioneering Project Based Learning model that was adapted in the School of Engineering and School of Business programs has helped ACK achieve recognition as a reputable national institution and secured a market presence. ACK takes pride in continuously modernizing its curriculum as well as teaching and learning practices to be in line with global standards in Higher Education. Students carry out (individually or in teams) research about issues related to industries or businesses then develop suitable solutions for them. This method enhances group work and gives the students’ creativity a spark. The classwork assigned to students is not only theoretical but also practical. Students then apply all the information and instructions they get in class at the workplace. This allows them to start their own business or join the job market easily as they have the needed expertise.
ACK implements the Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate (CDIO) method that encourages classroom learning where students cooperate and show their abilities. This method helps them get accustomed to the career field they intend to enter. ACK’s students enter the workplace well trained and practiced. They help improve the domain they enter with their creativity and innovation. The university has always invested in infrastructure that facilitates project-based learning, interactive teaching facilities, electronics libraries, research laboratories, as well as simulators, entrepreneurial facilities and utilities in order to maximize the quality of the learning environment. ACK has thirteen international accreditations and certifications from leading educational and international training institutions which are State of Kuwait Private University Council, International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience – IAESTE, Association of Arab Universities, Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), Engineers Australia, EAQUALS, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) – Kuwait, General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) – UAE, Investors In People (IIP), Lloyd’s Register foundation and CDIO. In addition it has four Academic partnerships with Central Queensland University in Australia (CQU), Cape Breton University in Canada (CBU), Aalborg University in Denmark (AAU) and Lufthansa Technical Training (LTT). ACK is bringing the best programs in the world to Kuwait. ACK’s core role pillar of "enabling human potential within a culture of care" is manifested through its accommodation of students with learning difficulties or disabilities throughout their period of stay at ACK. In addition to their qualified faculty members' commitment towards the learning of students, ACK's faculty members are also involved in the Strategic Partner, CQ University's academic research committee. During the past two years the College also liaised closely with the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science to co-host conferences. ACK nurtures research and education by adding committed scholars to its faculty and by supporting their scholarly work through Joint Research arrangements with its local and international partners. At ACK, the focus is on laying the foundations for future success in a supportive environment, and that is the perfect environment when students embark on their journey toward adulthood.
The ACK campus is located in West Mishref, Mubarak Al-Abdullah Al-Jaber Area. For more information on the programs and admissions at ACK visit the website www.ack.edu.kw and follow them on Instagram @ack_live to see what the ACK life looks like. 87
RECREATING THE IKEA ICON FOR THE FUTURE The new Veggie hot dog is great for your health and our planet By bazaar staff
The iconic IKEA hotdog is such a classic fan-favorite, it’s the best way to fuel up before you embark on your journey through the IKEA showroom, or reward yourself with after as a postshopping treat. Whatever the occasion, the IKEA hot dog has always been the perfect pick-me-up. And now they are even better, as the Veggie hot dog has just landed in the IKEA Bistro in Kuwait. The IKEA hot dog has a long history, starting back in the 80’s when Ingvar Kamprad himself set the standard and introduced the hot dog as an affordable but high quality option for customers. By introducing a vegetarian option to the iconic hot dog, more people can enjoy it. IKEA’s vision has always been to create a better everyday life for people. And the IKEA Food division wants to inspire people not only to become healthier in their food habits but also to make better choices that are sustainable for the environment. By offering 88
delicious food that has a positive impact on people and the planet they are making that vision a reality. A fresh bun holds the Veggie hot dog, which is topped with sweet & spicy mustard, pickled red cabbage. The roasted onions on top add the right amount of texture and crunch that bring this simple sandwich together perfectly. The Veggie hot dog is now available at IKEA Bistro Kuwait and is part of IKEA Food’s larger goal of including more plant-based ingredients in the range and offer healthier products. A lot of research and development went into creating the perfect recipe. Developing a new product is a lengthy process and companies have multiple goals to achieve, but most important for food is deliciousness. There is no point in creating a more sustainable hot dog if it is not just as tasty as the original. Every year, more than 660 million people enjoy IKEA food offerings, and leveraging this global reach arrives as an opportunity, as well as a responsibility, to provide and serve food options that are healthy, delicious and good for people and the planet. IKEA hopes that the Veggie hot dog will be an inspiration
for everyone who is looking for a quick tasty bite in the IKEA Bistro to choose the plant-based option that is still very affordable. IKEA’s Veggie hot dog does not contain any animal ingredients. The recipe is made from kale, red lentils, quinoa, onions and carrots lying under pickled red cabbage and roasted onions. The ingredients are completely free of any animal content. Overall, it has been assessed as a balanced snack according to the Balanced Meal Norm guideline by the WHO and has acceptable sugar content making it a great choice for everyone. The hot dog has always been one of IKEA’s beloved food heroes, and in introducing the Veggie hot dog to the IKEA Bistro range, the company is staying true to Ingvar Kamprad’s vision. We are sure that it will be as loved as the iconic IKEA hot dog.

The presentations included special video messages from the Trevor Sorbie UK Artistic Team and the INNOluxe Brand Ambassador Sophia Hilton. CHEEKY CHICK
It’s all about that chicken life! By bazaar staff
Cheeky Chick is a new concept promising you the delivery of delicious rotisserie chicken. We rarely see restaurants in Kuwait where they specifically specialize in chicken that is roasted over a stone fire with as much dedication as Cheeky Chick has. Upon receiving some high praise about it from the boss man, our expectations rose, and we simply had to try it out! FYI, Cheeky Chick is now available on Carriage only. The knock on the door came and our bellies were grumbling for lunch, and boy was it a feast worth waiting for. We received plenty of options, from chicken wings, to waffle fries. But it all started with the big dish, the star of it all, the one and only whole chicken. The process Cheeky Chick undertakes to deliver the perfect, juicy chicken every time is intriguing but also authentic. They marinate the whole chicken for 24 hours, then cook it in a process known as sous vide (under vaccum). Essentially following the slow and low ideal, while keeping together all the chicken’s yummy juices, this process cooks the entire chicken to perfection all round while marinating it for the 4-5 hours. It is then fired up in the rotisserie where it’s cooked under charcoal, stone, and wood giving it that smokey and crispy flavor we all love on the skin. A dry rub is then added to ensure the marinade sticks while being rotated, giving the already crispy skin an extra burst of flavor. While the chicken is rotating on the rotisserie, the marinade will be distributed evenly, and that is what gave our whole chicken the juiciness we wanted from the inside, plus delicious flavors and the beautiful crispiness on the outside. If you’re not feeling famished enough, there’s the option of ordering half a chicken instead of a whole one. Cheeky Chick also does chicken wings, spicy wings, and shish taouk. The process of these three items differs from the whole and half chicken cooking process, as the wings are marinated overnight, while the shish taouk is roasted over stone charcoal. We’ve personally tried all of them and the winning item of side dishes were the seasoned waffle fries. Who can ever say no to that?! But if you’re not a fan, there’s rice, fries, curly fries, and hummus, which are still great to have with chicken. Another cheeky factor we absolutely loved is the variety of Cheeky Chick’s homemade sauces. There were so many sauces, we were dipping our chicken and fries like crazy to get a taste of them all. You can never go wrong with hummus, but due to the variety we had on our hands, hummus was slightly and shockingly sidelined. Flaming Chick contains mayo sriracha sauce, while My Sweet Ex is a combination of tahini and pomegranate sauce which left us not as emotionally triggered as we thought we would be! The rest of the sauces are barbecue, honey mustard, garlic, tahini sriracha, and their signature cheeky sauce. Needless to say, they were all great to have with our chicken and fries. 92
Cheeky Chick is now open and available on carriage, follow @cheekychick.kw on Instagram for more information and updates.

KIDZANIA 2019 SUMMER CAMP
Give your kids the gift of the best summer ever By bazaar staff
“I am bored” is every parent’s dreaded phrase. And kids love to moan and groan about how they can’t find anything to do when they are cooped up indoors in the hotter months. The flip-side is when they are glued to their screens and totally ignore the world. Neither of these options are healthy for kids; they need to be active, engaged and learning new things that will help grow their brains, bodies and character. This year’s KidZania Summer Camp is filled to the brim with all of the fun activities kids love and enjoy. The camp started on the 9th of June and runs for eight weeks, ending on the 1st of August. This year, the camp features over 15 educational workshops that have been tailor made for visitors, ranging from DIY, acting & singing to accessories making, cooking and lots more. The wide variety gives each child the opportunity to find the things they are uniquely interested in. Kids can then do deep dives into their new-found skills, all while being mentally stimulated and physically active. But best of all, they get to meet and make new friends who are interested in the same things they are. By the end of summer, they will be feeling more independent and empowered. The hands-on approach to activity and judgementfree environment helps kids become more resilient and confident. Dedicated camp counselors called Zupervisors handle each workshop and make sure all visitors are safe, happy and having fun while they acquire new abilities. The camp offers some structure to their day but is still very flexible. Because many people travel and have other commitments during summer, KidZania is offering different packages so that you can tailor your child’s experience to suit your needs. You can start with the one-day pass which allows them to attend one workshop on any day for the duration of summer camp. By the end of the day they will walk out with their own certificate of completion, a T-shirt and an amazing sense of accomplishment. The Five-day pass offers them five times the fun, two t-shirts and a certificate of completion for all of the five workshops they attend. And they don’t have to visit on consecutive days too. One, Two, Three and Four-week passes are also available. The camp operates Sunday through Thursday from 9am until 3pm and is divided into three periods. The morning activities which include, breakfast, greetings and activities last until the 12 pm lunch break. Activities resume at 1pm with free play. KidZania appreciates kids hard work so once a camper completes 15 workshops, they will receive two Golden Tickets, for free admission to KidZania that are valid until December 2019. Children under 4 won’t be left out of the fun either, 94
the Totz program offers them lots of fun activities that are suitable for them like puppet shows, storytelling, painting, movie time and exercising as well as breakfast and lunch. To sign up, visit KidZania or call 2228 3180. Capacity is limited from five to fifteen kids in each workshop to avoid overcrowding so you will need to register for the workshop in advance.
KidZania Kuwait is located at The Mall - The Avenues. For more information on KidZania’s Summer Camp, please visit www.kidzania.com.kw and follow them on Instagram, YouTube and Facebook @KidZaniaKuwait. 95

AMAIZE-ING
Experience a joyful Mediterranean journey with Maize restaurant & cafe By bazaar staff
Maize features a wonderful spread of dishes; the very best from Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria and Palestine among other Mediterranean countries. “Maize” is a word from the old Kuwaiti dialect meaning “table” and what a spread on ours we thoroughly enjoyed. With our bazaar reviews, we generally love to talk about food more than décor, but the stylishly designed interiors of Maize warrant mentioning. Immediately as you enter, you’re met with a warm glow, reminiscent of a Levantine sunset. Kallio white-oiled, oak chairs sit amid earthy tones, dusky rose colors with bronze highlights and smoked mirror finishes, and myriad textures make the simple and repeated use of geometric shape stand out, all supported by a speckled floor with the same greys, pinks and earthy tones within it. The entire interiors at Maize reflect early western twentieth century stylings which can be seen in the use of dark wood, velvet materials, featured metals, geometric shapes, and even the table napkin holders exude the Art Deco sophistication of a 1930’s dining experience. The constant design references, similar effects seen everywhere, and the layered quality of the design theme, this is no mistake. This is a deliberate and accurate indication of the dining experience you are about to enjoy. As is best in this kind of restaurant, all the dishes come at once, each arrival to the table greeted by a greater sigh of appreciation from the group. You can hear the sizzle of The Shrimp Pil Pil before you can see it! The table displays a veritable rainbow of color due to the use of fresh ingredients, artful plating and baskets of pita featuring the signature naturally colored green and pink breads. Perfect for deeply scraping into the sundried tomato or, the oddly bright but again naturally green, kale hummus. The fattouche is nothing like you’ve ever tasted before, with five herbs keeping the salad super sharp and tasty. Fresh zaatar, dill, coriander, parsley and mint combine with a home-made sumac and lemon vinaigrette to carefully layer flavor in each and every forkful. The substantially weighty Spicy Chickpea Salad with crumbled feta cheese and sunflower seeds over crunchy cucumber is also worth a try, and would be a good main for vegetarians for whom there are lots of options. The other dishes that have arrived come from the sokhon section, and include the Leventine inspired Betenjan Mashwe. Super thin slices of eggplant are grilled and layered with a drizzled dill yoghurt sauce, cerise pink pickled onion slices decorating the bulgar topped dish with feta crumbs scattered on top along with pomegranate and pine nuts. So many flavors and textures in one dish, all working delightfully together. 98
The Khibez are a great choice if you have a pizza craving but want to keep it healthy with flatbreads. The Roasted Cauliflower version sits on top of a sesame paste spread base with cherry tomatoes, peppery arugula and pickled onion. The robustly earthy flavors make this a worthy sharing dish. A huge mound of meat shawarma, surrounded and decorated by thick triangles of golden-fried pita, so the dish looks like a colorfully animated sun, indicates one of the house signature dishes, Fattet Shawarma; incredibly well-spiced meat topped with home-made light yoghurt. The fresh parsley with more pomegranate seeds and pine nuts, is not only aesthetically pleasing but also keeps the whole dish light and fresh tasting. It is the high quality of the fresh ingredients used in these dishes that shows bazaar how important the high-quality part of the dining experience is to Maize, and you can’t but help appreciate this. The fatteh is superbly moreish and a favorite for half the table. Trying the grills next, the lamb kababs are delicious even for those who are not grill fans. The way in which the lamb has been flavored is tasty but you can discover these flavors only because the kababs are still so juicy and succulent. It’s melt-in-your-mouth goodness and the Kebab Iraqi with lashings of sumac and parsley is divinely palatable. The lamb chops are once again another dish which is flavorsome and comes with a pomegranate molasses chili flake infused light syrup. It has to be said that the way in which the kitchen subtly layers of flavor is a skillful culinary art, and they do it with everything. For dessert we a tried kunafa-filled croissant. The croissant itself was perfect, cut in half without a dent in its dome, and inside a thick serving of crunchy kunafa and kashkaval cheese, the perfect cheese choice, was melted on top of the kunafa noodles. A sugar syrup to drizzle added a beautifully glistening touch to the rose petal strewn dessert, but the entire experience was not one of overwhelming sweetness but terrifically juxtaposed textures. Finally the San Sabastian Cheesecake, baked and fluffy, light and flavorsome was an outstanding finish to a wonderful meal. For one final taste we divided the raspberry that topped the dessert into two and each popped a half into our mouths. Wow, this was fresh, fruity and sharp one of the best raspberries we’d ever tasted. A tiny detail that was not overlooked; Maize had taken care to ensure the quality of just this single raspberry was high, and this is what makes this restaurant so special. Maize is a joy to spend time in and ideal for a group of friends or family to take time over sharing a meal or relaxing and enjoying each other’s company.
Maize Restaurant & Café is located on the first floor of Vibes Complex, Abu Hassaniyah and open from 7:00 am to 01:00 am every day. For more information follow them on Instagram @maizekw and DM for catering enquiries. 99
