As I sit down to write the July intro, I really want to make a World Cup winner prediction, but it’s sort of way too soon. All I can say at this point is that it is definitely the year of the underdogs so far, with some very surprising and pleasing results. It would be amazing for a new team to win for a change. The kind of result that would inspire countless teams, countless people and countless small businesses to be optimistic about their futures too... but, of course, we all know that the Brazilian team could smoothly Samba its way to the final, as could France, Portugal and the other usual suspects!

But World Cup or not, life will still go on, no matter who ends up winning. And life going on is a mainstay theme during Kuwait’s summer seasons, whethear you’re staying in the country or not – because your summer might not turn out the way you want it to, but don’t give up hope because there’s always something to do!

In true form, this issue of bazaar is double trouble: a combined July-August edition that’s filled to the brim with features that will help inspire your summer plans. We delve into the definition of the good life with hospitality consultant, gastronomist and avid traveler Talal Al Rashed as our Up Close and Personal candidate, as well as peeking into the hotelier life of PR guru Aynur Mamedova at the opulent Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya. Between the two of them and the work they do for the luxury hotel franchise, we’re already planning our next weekend getaway at this splendid property.

We also have some summer wardrobe hacks in this issue, introducing gorgeously designed jewelry by one of our favorite people to work with, Layan Ezzo. Treat your eyes to a fabulous photo-shoot showcasing her minimalist jewelry, and if you’re feeling a bit sportier, then divert your attention to our photo-shoot with Cole Haan and Ecco for some ideas on fabulous fashionable footwear for the summer.

CLASSIC AND QUIRKY HELSINKI The Traveleye guidebook

It’s that time of year again when everybody begins to scramble within one question on their mind, “Where will I travel this summer?” For sure, you could stick to the usual suspects - London, Paris, Barcelona, Mykonos, and Dubai. But why not try something new? Isn’t the whole point of travel to explore more of this planet we live on? Why join the masses when you can visit a new city without compromising on having a good time.

This year, I suggest you head to Helsinki, the capital city of Finland. Although not a part of Scandinavia, it still shares much with its Nordic neighbors - long summer days, mild temperatures, great food, friendly people, culturally-rich with a twist of quirkiness that is only found within that band of countries.

Getting there Getting to Helsinki is much easier than you think, with one-stop options to suit all budgets through Doha, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and London.

Where to stay My personal recommendation is the spacious and comfortable Klaus K hotel, which boasts a central location on Bulevardi, and puts you within walking distance of virtually any place you’d want to visit in the city. I also have to comment that the breakfast buffet was of a very high standard, with lots of hearty healthy options to help kick-start your day!

Cultural Helsinki Finland, as a country, has made countless contributions to the art and design scene, with famous names such as Marimekko and Iittala.

Another famous name that seems to have slipped from the minds of mainstream audiences is Nokia – the mobile brand that revolutionized how we interact with our mobiles, made them into brand status symbols, and by default rendered them extensions of our personalities.

Kiasma – My first stop on the art trail in Helsinki was the Museum of Contemporary Art – also known as Kiasma. Kiasma is the Finnish word for chiasma (a point at which paired chromosomes remain in contact during the first metaphase of meiosis, and at which crossing over and exchange of genetic material occur between the strands, to get technical), and is a nod to the building’s basic architectural design.

Amos Anderson Museum - The Amos Anderson Museum in Helsinki isn’t one you’d find easily, but 24

nonetheless, I consider this place a hidden gem. The museum houses a bunch of quirky art pieces, and it’s that quirkiness that unites the displays, as you’d be hard pressed to find a common theme among the pieces. This is the kind of place that has paintings and sculptures that cause you to have a conversation with your travel buddy (or yourself, if you’re a solo traveler like me) on what art is, what qualities each piece has to elevate it to the threshold of art, and even the simple question, “Why is this here?”

Where to eat Olo - When one thinks of Finland, one rarely thinks of the high-end gastronomy. Olo, Finnish for the word “feeling”, offers a culinary journey that incited feelings of astonishment, wonder, curiosity, and the feeling of tasting deliciousness – whatever that word is. Everything on the menu comes from fresh ingredients, served straight from farm/barn to your plate and incorporates some very innovative dishes, such as a salad bowl which had edible flowers.

Another dish to order is chicken liver with blueberry shaped into the form of an egg, and placed in hay, accompanied by a chicken skin cracker.

Kamppi Chapel (Chapel of Silence) - The Chapel of Silence is located in a busy commercial area, and almost looks like something extra-terrestrial.

Smooth lines made of honey-colored wood envelop the chapel, and without any signs or indicators of what this is, it’s almost as if the peculiar design invites passers-by to come check out the place.

Once you’re in, the same minimalism is reflected in the interior, and the lack of any edges or decor almost force you to into silence to observe and take in the silence.

Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church) - The second church I visited in Finland was Rock Church. And no, the name isn’t an allusion to any style of music, but rather a nod to the fact that it was built INTO a rock. I was excited to visit this place the most, as a lot of the “architecture” is left to nature, which I believe is a genius idea, as it leaves one to ponder nature’s majesty. Although Rock Church is certainly bigger than the Chapel of Silence, it still stuns you into silence once you walk in!

On how he got involved in the film.

They called me. They called me over a weekend; I was doing Avengers, and I didn’t expect the call.

I heard there was like short list for a year or two or since the last Deadpool. You know I know that the tag of the first Deadpool is like you know, him coming out in his bathrobe and he’s saying the one thing to look forward too is Cable and all that. And I had no idea who Cable was and I didn’t really react to that thing. I wasn’t a comic book geek like that or you know a lover of comic books. And then they called me over a weekend and they said look you got to decide, there was just somebody who’d dropped out. I wasn’t on the short list. I talked to Simon Kinburg who produced this, I talked to Ryan, which was a great conversation. I had always been a fan of his, so I was like I don’t get nervous very often, but I got nervous talking to him, and I was trying to be funny and I was more irreverent. You know that’s what you do with comedians, you try to be funnier than they are, but it never works. That was my relationship with Ryan.

On working with Ryan Reynolds.

You know I had been very lucky to work with 26

unpretentious people. You know, like the Cohens and all that. They’re not really sticklers for you know compliments and stuff like that. So I’ve kind of gotten used to that whole thing, where everybody’s not stroking each other, they’re like overcompensating with their power and like screaming out you because they have the ability to scream at you cause they know you’re not going to run away. Whatever that is, he doesn’t have that at all. I mean he so finesses the producer, writer, “hey maybe what if you try this.”

You don’t feel like it’s ever a manipulation with him.

He’s a pleasure to work with, man.

On his character.

Yea, I mean I said look, cause I had come from Avengers, and I said you know should I read the comics? Because I was given this great huge bible for Thanos and it was great to be able to go back and kind of research it, talk to people at comic book stores and all that. And Ryan was like nah you don’t need to do that. So I went back and I talked to Rob Liefeld and I kind of got into the idea or his idea of who Cable was. But there’s so many renditions of it that you almost get confused, so it became more about basing it off of one type of comic book, or

one genre of that comic book, or one era of that trajectory, and then just going off with you know our imaginations. And it seems to have worked.

On his mood on set.

With like dramas, I find myself joking around all the time, I try to like go the opposite because when you finally do the drama, you’re getting into it, and you’re saturated in this horror and you’re in a bad mood and whatever it is. And this thing guy is so curmudgeony to start with, so I was stuck in this purgatory of having a good time but trying to respect the character ad what was going on.

On reprising his role.

You know I signed on for a few of them and I’ve never done that before. And I was reticent until I read it. I thought it was so fresh, and funny, and different than anything I had ever experienced in film. You know I saw the first one, I thought it was like beautifully inappropriate, which I can understand totally. And so this will go on. FOLLOWING TALAL AL RASHED’S JOURNEY By bazaar staff

You know, I really don’t like the ‘question and answer’ format of interviews,” hospitality consultant, gastronomist and traveler Talal Al Rashed says as he guides us through the tunnel-like vortex of the indoor pool at the Four Seasons Kuwait at Burj Alshaya. Embracing bazaar’s “get to know you” method of interviewing, we venture throughout the opulent hotel under Talal’s patronage, where he has access to all amenities and secret passageways as a guest and consultant.

He tangents enthusiastically as we stroll, about the hotel’s beauty in comparison to others around the region, [“it’s one of my favorite Four Seasons properties in the world!”] his opinion on people embracing and respecting their own paths in life, and the book he’s been reading: The Art of the Good Life: Clear Thinking for Business and a Better Life, by Rolf Dobelli. “I feel connected to it because it ties into my ideology of life: keeping things simple, humble and straight to the point without comparing yourself to anyone else, and living in the moment. That’s what will guarantee you the Good Life.”

As the co-founder and managing director of the creative agency The Contourage, Talal knows all about the good life. It’s no coincidence that his explorative nature landed him notoriety in the social media sphere, different regional publications, and a spot on Arab News’ “The 5

offbeat Arab travel bloggers you need to follow.”“As a teenager, I was always invested in trying out new restaurants. I’d try everything – especially if it was a concept or involved an ingredient that wasn’t usually found locally, or that we weren’t used to.”

This enthusiasm for trying new things ushered Talal towards different opportunities. Starting off with a degree in accounting from Kuwait University, Talal coasted with the pragmatic life he had planned for himself in accordance to his educational background. “Though I always felt drawn towards the hospitality industry, I couldn’t imagine stemming away from my degree- despite the fact that my job at the time saw my potential in public relations.” Not because he didn’t want to delve deeper, but because, as he put it, he “didn’t think it was a possibility at the time”, due to the lack of growth in hospitality careers around Kuwait during the mid-2000s.

As Kuwait was, however, catching up quickly for loss time in the hospitality world, Talal was using his personable demeanor, zest for life, and knack for making experiences come alive to continue tasting the gastronomical pleasures of food and travel while working in real estate development in Toronto. “I was constantly driving around in the snow towards little cities and towns outside of where I was living, all to try new and authentic cuisines I’d heard of.” With this, it was made clear to him that he had an undeniable interest in the restaurant world, and carefully decided to utilize his passion, making moves towards turning his love of food and hospitality into a career.

“I was throwing everything away – my degree, my career in finance, investment and real estate, my accounting background, my savings – but I had to give it a shot. I couldn’t ignore it anymore.”

This mindset took him to Switzerland, where he enrolled in the Glion Institute of Higher Education and obtained a degree in hospitality management, while focusing on restaurant culture. This then took him on a journey towards a month-long internship at the Fairmont Montreux Palace in Switzerland, then onto Bodrum, Turkey, where he spent four months interning at the luxury Kempinski Barbaros Bay resort. And so, the trip back to the region adjusted his focus towards restaurants, and while temporarily settling back into real estate, Talal reaffirmed his passion for the hospitality field by gaining a job as a waiter at the prestigious Gaucho steakhouse in DIFC. “Working as a waiter was such a humbling and rewarding job for me. People think it’s low-end, but in actuality, you need to have a lot of power to be a waiter. You’re responsible for other people’s happiness and enjoyment and with the right attitude, you can affect their whole experience.”

What he also loved about the position was the amount of people he met and personal connections he made, on top of giving the public a fun and fresh look on the service industry with his applauded flair. This didn’t go unrecognized

by Gaucho’s owners, and Talal was granted a slew of promotions to follow: a one-year contract, a position as receptionist, graduating to guest relations manager, and eventually acquiring media and clients for the restaurant as a PR rep.

Coupled with high praises received by friends and family following his impressive Instagram account, coaxing him to make it public for all to enjoy his adventures, the precedent was set for him to manage The Countourage PR and Events Creative Agency. But to this day, he insists, that he had "no clue that people could even create a brand out of social media. The thought had never even occurred to me."

Hardly a social media hub project, The Contourage, (a portmanteau of “contour” – definition – and “entourage” – the support of the crowd,) sums it all up and allows Talal to expose his savoir-faire by working with regional clients.

of life together through organized dinners – what Talal considers to be his greatest extravagance – and takes their dining experiences to the next level. “At these dinners, I don’t want to seat a bunch of people in the same field together. Why should I have media dinners where only media people can meet? I think it’s more impactful to congregate an eclectic range of backgrounds and professions.” It’s all about effectiveness, but not in a way that benefits him, but the people. “I want us to change the way we look at travel, food and different indulgences of life – the beautiful things. Eat mindfully, live in underrated luxury, and go against the grain of comfort.” Either way, Talal will always tell us what’s worth it – he has the know-how.

Bruha Eve’s enchanting art By bazaar staff

Small and mighty, Bruha waltzes into bazaar’s meeting room with an effervescence and confidence as though she’s been there a million times before. “I came with gifts for you ladies!” she says, toting a range of her handcrafted slides, just one of the many beautiful artisan pieces she designs and sells under her offshoot brand, By BEA. “This bag is made from pineapple fiber,” she tells me enthusiastically, gesturing towards the tote her one-of-a-kind creation was packaged in. “And the upper for the slippers is made from the same fabric and pattern that Islanders used as loincloth,” she says, with a wicked smile.

Wicked is the way to describe the enchanting Bruha, (whose name, in Tagalog by no coincidence means “enchantress”) but not in the traditional sense of the meaning. The word’s definition tends to connote evilness, but Bruha is the extreme opposite of that.

She’s honest, raw and exudes a “what you see is what you get” nature. As she goes on to tell me about her method of painting with her hands, and the fact that her canvas art, the time she takes to create, and her internal self are darker than she’s externally perceived, it’s clear that she just has the soul of an artist.

“An artist, to me, is someone who isn’t afraid to create – isn’t afraid to be themselves.”

She tells me, as she describes her life with gusto: her Philippines hometown Nueva Vida (where she was recently given an award: The Outstanding Daughter of Nueva Vida) her cats – subjects who have made themselves present on Bruha’s canvas, many a time –and her (notso-secret) passion of cooking, expertly plating her creations, and hopes and ambitions to one day own a restaurant. Amidst it all, her fiery ball of energy, her ever-changing but currently ice-blue hair, catch my attention as she says “Let me tell you about my background: then, you will understand me.”

Bruha Eve was born in the Philippines some 30 years ago on the Island of Zamboanga. Her family soon after relocated to the jungle landscapes of Nueva Vida, where, despite their lack of income, Bruha was given every opportunity her mother, 32

aunties and her favorite uncle, an American man working for the military, could give her.

“I remember, I went to a public school” Bruha begins one charming anecdote in particular, reminiscing about a local poster competition held by the county's schools. “Most of the the private school kids had their fancy craypas oil pastel crayons, but I had nothing, and my mother couldn’t provide me with the same tools everyone else had.” But Bruha isn’t one to give into such parameters! She reportedly went home, gathered the pigment-releasing begonias from her backyard, and proceeded to produce colors out of them, thus creating a poster her school would never forget. “I didn’t end up winning the contest, but I did get an honorable mention for being the most creative!” she beams.

Anyone with eyes can easily see that Bruha is in fact, the most creative, and especially the name brands she has worked with. On her resume, her close collaborations boast bits and pieces of marketed illustration with Alyasra brands such as Jimmy Choo, Alshaya brands like West Elm and our local Louis Vuitton – one that is in fact, a collaboration she’ll never forget. “I was commissioned to implement customer-requested illustrations onto everyday items from rubbish bins to tissue box holders and other knick-knacks and tchotchkes. The rich are quirky,” she grins “but I love that they appreciate my style!”

And because people appreciate her style, her use of color, raw emotion and organic matter to create beauty, Bruha birthed her art world to distribute her wearable art to the masses. This galaxy of art in fashion includes her customization skills, and restoring and revamping vintage pieces for clientele. By BEA offers an earthier approach, with paint-splattered and customized wide-brimmed straw hats, crossbody bags with tropical emblems, those gorgeous slippers we’re obsessed with (which are, by the way, extremely comfortable!) beach-ready handbags, sunglasscases… just to name a few. The cherry on top is the fact that many of the fibers and materials she uses also hail from her roots, as a nod to the raw materials that are abundant in the jungle.

“I love implementing my heritage onto these accessories, and I love that locals in Kuwait can appreciate my use of color and patterns.”

Her heavily incorporated jungle-style motif is a transparent appreciation for the close ties Bruha keeps with her homeland – the place where she has indeed, left her heart. “I’m actually darker than I appear to be (artistically speaking.) But I really just make art with emotion. That’s why I paint with my hands – to really feel everything that I’m doing.” With that, and a peaceful smile, she excuses herself to go back home to be with her art, her husband, cats and beautifully plated concoctions.

Meanwhile, we’re just excited to see what the enchanting Bruha will create next.

You can’t mistake fashion guru and jewelry designer Layan Ezzo if you ever come across her. She is very petite and works hard at the gym to stay so. With an incredible sense of style acutely honed by six years of luxury retail marketing, the jewelry she wears also draws you in to gaze more closely at her. Beautifully minimal, Layan layers her pieces with the exuberance of youth but you can immediately see that each piece can stand alone because of its quality and the meaning behind it. bazaar spent some time with this talented and fun designer to chat about her background and Layan Jewelry.

Growing up with your father in the jewelry business, did you always want to design jewelry?

It's always been something I've been so passionate about. I've always seen jewelry as a beautiful expression with a beautiful untold story.

What made you choose fine jewelry?

It's just been in the family for so long so I wanted to do something that was close to home but also defines me.

What is your fondest memory of your father working in the jewelry business?

Naming it after me.

Do you have a favorite piece of your mother’s jewelry which was given to her by your father?

Lots! But my all-time favorite is the pair of earrings with a cluster of pearls and diamonds. Pearls are one of my favorite gemstones and earrings are my favorite piece of jewelry (I don't know if you can tell with my 12 ear piercings!).

What’s the most sentimental piece of jewelry you own or have had made?

A necklace with a "w" on it which is the first letter of my father's name.

Your pieces when you started out were very delicate and you still produce great layering pieces. What was your inspiration behind creating these petite looks?

To me, minimalism is everything! I believe in anything small but with a great meaning behind it; it just means so much more and it's appreciated a lot more than when it's right there in your face.

You’ve had successful collections inspired by runes, chakra symbols and calligraphy; all are very meaningful pieces for the people who wear them.

What is next for Layan Jewelry?

I do know I enjoy working closely with clients on bespoke

pieces. Who knows really what’s next when it comes to collections as with Layan Jewelry I'm a spur-of-themoment kind of a person. I see something, fall in love with it, get inspired and get to work! I will definitely continue looking for different ways to create collections that describe different personalities, whether it's with signs, scripts or even stones. This inspiration also helps me to design extremely personal bespoke pieces.

When someone comes to you for a bespoke piece, what is the process like from coming up with an idea all the way through to creating the piece?

I send over a sketch to get the client’s thoughts and feedback, share it with the workshop, the workshop then sends over a prototype for my approval and if all goes well, we finalize the design. It's usually a 2-day process and for the piece to be ready it needs 3-5 days.

You’ve made some very intricate pieces, where did you find the craftsmen who work on Layan Jewelry and what makes their work special?

It took a while to find the right "team" but thankfully, I've been able to establish a great working relationship with the same workshop my father worked with in his earlier days.

Have you ever designed anything that they have not been able to make?

So far nothing yet and there have been some very precisely cut, cleanly set pieces. They are supremely skilled.

Where do you source your materials from?

Europe has a such a long history of excellence in high quality metals and stones with provenance that I only use Swiss gold and Belgian diamonds.

If you could create a piece, no expense spared, what would it look like?

I'm already wearing it! A tiny diamond stone bezel set on a delicate gold cable chain. It’s a timeless piece with my favorite stone!

Many people gained fame on social media for fashion, food, and coffee. That’s why Musaed Almejren and Sulaiman Alroudhan stand out; they are gaining popularity because they are two Kuwaitis who organize breathtaking adventures around the world for people like you and me to enjoy. In this interview, we catch up with them and learn more about what they do.

Can you introduce one another in your own words?

Musaed: Sulaiman is a nice professional guy who wakes up early, unlike me! He takes care of the day and I take care of the night. Sometimes he can be stubborn but whatever issue we face, we resolve it.

Sulaiman: Musaed is easygoing but can be stubborn sometimes. He is creative. I like his energy, and he always pushes me to do the ideas that I have and our trips are one of the things that he pushed me to pursue.

How did you meet each other and get started?

Musaed: I knew Sulaiman from social media, then while on an organized trip to Nepal I found that we shared a room by coincidence. We got along and became friends.

We then went on a trip to Madagascar and shared a room again and that’s when it all started, we arranged our first trip together to Brazil.

What’s the reason behind your passion for traveling?

Sulaiman: I feel that I was not born to stay in one place, and organizing trips allows me to get paid to travel and meet new people and see new places. Traveling also inspires you to become creative, think differently, learn about other cultures, and adds to me as a person.

Musaed: Since I was a kid I spent hours reading maps and history books. I always wanted to know about other cultures and people, see everything, and do everything.

I love traveling because it takes you out of your comfort zone. It shows you that there is much more to life than living and dying in the place you were born in.

What is the craziest thing that happened to you on your trips?

Musaed: We were rafting in Brazil and the raft was heading to a big fall. It was so powerful to the point that the raft flipped over and my helmet flew off.

Sulaiman: I thought I was out of the water when it flipped over but I was under the raft breathing water. I couldn’t get out from under the raft and I felt like that was it. But luckily we survived.

How do you ensure a safe and enjoyable trip for those who join your group?

Sulaiman: We interview everyone before the trip and we make sure we clarify all issues that might 38

arise from the trip. We don’t leave a chance for any surprises, as much as that is possible.

Musaed: We would rather go with less people and less profit than risk it by accepting someone of whom we are not 100% sure will be safe. What we care about the most is the energy of the group.

What sets you apart from your competitors?

Musaed: We are building a community and long lasting memories and friendships. We even meet with previous travelers from the GCC every six months or so. We are a family and we do what we do not for the money but for the passion. And it shows.

Sulaiman: We also make sure that everyone on our trip is on the same page and same mentality through interviews. That’s what ensures the quality of our trips.

What advice do you have for readers?

Musaed: If you want to make a decision you should do your own reading about the matter then consult with someone but make sure that the final decision is yours.

Sulaiman: Do what you want to do. People’s opinion might be different from yours because each person has their own perspective.

If you had one last trip in your life where would you go?

Musaed: I’d go to Greece.

Sulaiman: I’d stay home.

Packaging, sadly, is one of the last things considered when it comes to the marketing mix. Advertising, PR events, stunts, social media and other “glamorous” initiatives seem to get preferential attention over the primary delivery of many brands – the package.

So when do you really know it’s time to reevaluate and update packaging graphics? What are the rules? We get a lot of questions regarding when and how to tackle packaging updates. Here are the top six signs it’s time to update (and pitfalls to avoid) based on 25+ years of experience.

4. THE TIMES ARE CHANGING There is a difference between an “aesthetic trend” and real category movement. Many agencies miss the difference and are quick to pour scorn on a new design look and feel, especially if it comes from a competing agency. First, identify the category design language – every category has one. Understanding the brand’s assets within this context is critical before you embark on any design exercise. Then look to the styles, languages, shapes, and effects that can be applied to amplify the brand’s message. Don’t trend for trend’s sake, but ensure the brand remains relevant.

5. YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE ISSUES FROM THE RETAILERS’ POINT OF VIEW Now more than ever, we hear that retailers are under increasing pressure to delight consumers within

aisles, especially in the center of the store. With increasing category growth and brands competing for the same retail space, categories and entire aisles have become fragmented. The change, if addressed correctly, could be as simple as basic design housekeeping, not a drastic overhaul. Try to understand what the retailer is seeing that the design brief is not addressing.

6. YOUR BRAND MESSAGE HAS GOTTEN LOST Every brand should continually look in the mirror and question why certain assets or packaging details exist.

Understand the stories behind the elements. The brand message on a package is often diluted little by little with small changes over time, but it’s hard to see without taking a step back. True brand consultancies will find creative ways forward that are based on brand fundamentals and consider the underlying strategy.

1. IT’S BEEN SIX YEARS SINCE THE LAST UPDATE Six years is adequate time for any package design to be considered for an update. Within that time, the category itself and the internal team responsible for the brand have evolved. This is a critical distinction from the outdated and overused terminology of “evolution” or “revolution” of the brand’s articulation at shelf. An update should not be made for the sake of change or a fleeting trend. Marketers and designers should collaborate to craft the package design with the aim of tying it closely to a strategic positioning that is relevant to the consumer.

2. YOUR COMPETITORS HAVE CHANGED As mentioned, six years in a fast-moving, consumer goods category is a long time for some brands to stand still, especially if you want your brand to be positioned as a category leader. At the beginning of any design initiative, it is important to evaluate what has changed and who has changed. Tracking is critical to understanding the trends and agility of any competitor. That is not to say that we are proponents of benchmarking versus the competition, but it’s important to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your competition to know when best to strike.

3. YOU’VE DISCOVERED WHAT CONSUMERS AREN’T TELLING YOU The obsession with consumer research sometimes adds to the fog of war of when to change and why. Consumers are getting smarter, but as much as they want better products and brands that cut through the bull, they’re not very good at articulating what is in their heads. However, consumers leave crumbs of evidence if you know where and how to look. Get out of the research labs and away from the late night takeout. Go to their homes, have a conversation, use the brand with them, and go shopping. Open up, be honest and enjoy the journey with the consumer.

If they feel respected and knowledgeable, they will tell you everything, including the truth!

YOU PERSON! Why we’re officially the worst species on the planet

Before I start, allow me to state that this article veers off from my usual topics, but please keep reading, as this is not about me, or you, it’s about US! Let’s begin by taking a look at this statement: “YOU ANIMAL!” Depending how you intonate the above statement while reading it, then it could mean one of two things: 1. A huge compliment you give to someone for doing something great.

2. An insult, because someone did something bad!

Now I mean the latter, but let me adjust the verbiage there. The insult is officially now: You Person! And no, it can’t be used in a complimentary manner. Because what I have been noticing recently in the region is that people and specifically humans (yes, I had to double fortify my statement) are the worst species to roam this earth.

If you go to Instagram and start typing #saving, you will be amazed by the amount of rescue missions posts for animals in the region and a huge quota of that is saving animals from abuse.

Now when I say abuse, I don’t mean neglect, but I actually mean physical abuse, where people actually spend resources like time and effort to induce physical pain on an innocent animal. Why? Because why not?

And before people start trying to steer my words towards one race of people, or one person, let me clarify that this statement applies to all of us. Through the simple monitoring of these rescues, I noticed that being “People” (remember? Because it’s an insult now) is independent of origin, race etc.…

It’s just people being people.

Lately, all across your socials, you might have seen posts calling to defame a certain social media figure for what he/she has done to an animal that was under his/her care. But, I refuse to do that, because this issue is not an insulated incident. This is an epidemic that is bigger than just one person.

In my own country of Lebanon, where gun laws are very loose (that’s another topic for another article) people shoot stray dogs just because they barked. Let me re-iterate: A rational adult person heard a noise produced by an animal that solemnly behaves out of instinct and he was annoyed by it, so he brought a weapon meant to be used …NEVER!... to solve an issue that he faced, by which taking the life of the creature.

In this region, some children who are supposed to be our hope for a better tomorrow 46

spend an excessive amount of time on the streets tying up dogs and beating them up with sticks, because you can only play with your gaming console so much before it gets boring.

All the while, people here and there, who are entrusted with these children, encourage this behavior for various reasons. Be it a lack of interest in their children’s development or their own personal unrealistic reasons why dogs should be killed.

All that being said, it’s not their fault: it’s ours. Ours who George? Ours, as in us, as in the people who care so much about animals but never go beyond shaking their heads at the crime being committed daily against these genuinely pure souls. I totally understand that citizens cannot be changed overnight, but change is a product of a rational conversation.

And to bring it back to our beloved home Kuwait, officials are constantly trying to make the change happen, but it is our duty as residents of this beautiful country to assist them and make their job easier.

Nothing warms my heart more than seeing a message being circulated on WhatsApp by the Ministry of Interior giving people directions on how to deal with the extreme summer heat we are currently facing, and right at the bottom of the message, they asked people to leave bowls of water and food outside for birds and stray animals.

Bravo! From the bottom of my heart. But are

we, as citizens, helping to ease their job? No. Here is a list of ideas that could better the lives of animals in Kuwait, while also giving local officials some help in their efforts to protect them: 1 – Donate your time to rescue, foster or shelter an animal that needs your help.

2 – Spark a conversation whenever you see an aggression towards an animal, be calm and logical and don’t act emotionally.

3 – Donate money, no matter how little, believe me that helps. If each person who cares spares 1 KD a month, this could feed an animal for 10 days or give rescuers an opportunity to pay medical bills when all these donations are combined. And that is a lot, believe me.

I wish people can act to make change happen, because I have a dog: she barks, she is annoying most of the time, and she soils almost everywhere, but she loves me unconditionally and I can never repay her for that love. She was one of the “People” (I guess we can use it as a compliment, in her case) who restored my faith in myself. I wish everyone can experience this kind of love.

PILOT GIG ROWING This might have to wait till September, but it’s become one of our favorite activities, it’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors, and it’s such a sneakily good workout. WAKING AROUND The biggest myth about Kuwait is that there are no places to walk around in. This is extremely untrue! We won’t pretend that it isn’t trickier in the summer, but if you wait till the evening time, our favorite outdoor walkways are: Mishref Mamsha, Marina Walk, Shaheed Park and The Boulevard. Too hot outside?

We don’t blame you – just lace up your trainers and hit the freezing cold malls for some mall walking! The never-ending stretch of The Avenues and the vast grounds of 360 MALL are the ideal venues for this activity.

The 356 “No.1” Roadster was the first Porsche vehicle registered for road use in 1948. Seven decades on and the Stuttgart-based manufacturer has become renowned for producing high performance, emotional sport cars. Porsche Centre Kuwait, Behbehani Motors Company, commemorated the 70th anniversary by inviting customers, enthusiasts and brand representatives to a special event held at The Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya. Forming part of the first Sportscar Together Day global calendar of celebrations, Porsche Centre Kuwait’s event featured a showcase of Porsche’s most iconic model, the 911. Presented to the public for the first time in 1963 and now with more than one million models produced, the two-door rear engine model is the centerpiece of the brand’s evolution.

The Porsche journey commenced with a dream that has continued to fascinate generations. Porsche 911 − the consistently cutting-edge classic The Porsche 911 has enjoyed a unique history: for over 50 years, it has been not only a sports car but a way of life. There are over 20 models now available, combining individuality, sportiness and comfort in typical Porsche style. The 911 has won the hearts of sports car fans from the very beginning. Following the celebrated world premiere at the 1963 IAA trade fair in Frankfurt, the first models were received by customers one year later. Porsche quickly expanded the range, presenting the 911 Targa in late 1966. A milestone in

the history of the model was the unveiling of the first 911 Turbo in 1974, boasting a three-litre engine, 260 horsepower and an eye-catching rear spoiler. Year after year and generation after generation, Porsche has continued to develop the 911. Body variants such as the convertible and speedster were added to the portfolio, as were upgrades including all-wheel drive and the lightweight chassis. The iconic 911 continues to fascinate sports car aficionados at annual motor shows in Kuwait and all-year long.

Porsche Cayenne – the first four-door model The Cayenne is the Porsche sports car for family and off-road use. As the brand’s first SUV, it is both a bestseller and a pioneer for new technologies. In 2002, the first models to hit the market were the eightcylinder Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo, combining superior engine power with sophisticated chassis technology such as air suspension and a variable damping system, wide-ranging off-road capability and comfort. The six-cylinder Cayenne variant followed in 2003, the Cayenne Turbo S arrived with the model update in 2006 and the characteristically sporty Cayenne GTS was unveiled in 2007.

The Cayenne also offers a platform for the introduction of new drive concepts, with the Cayenne Diesel debuting in 2009 as the brand’s first car featuring a compression-ignition engine.

When Porsche launched the second generation of the Cayenne in 2010, this was accompanied by the introduction of parallel hybrid technology. The Cayenne S Hybrid used the electric motor not only for increased efficiency and environmental friendliness, but above all to raise performance. This generated 52

Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo fresh impetus in the field of hybrid development. The Cayenne S E-Hybrid was subsequently released in 2014, featuring a battery that can also be charged from a socket.

The third generation of Porsche Cayenne arrived to Kuwait earlier this year, representing a full-scale redevelopment of the Cayenne. Powerful turbo engines, a new eight-gear Tiptronic S gearbox, new chassis systems, and an innovative display and operating concept featuring comprehensive connectivity provide a significant boost in the coverage of both sporty and comfort-related aspects. Boasting an enhanced appearance, this SUV is also the first to be provided with mixed tires and rear-axle steering.

Porsche Macan – the compact sports SUV With the Macan, Porsche has transferred the successful concept of the sporty SUV to the compact segment. Featuring powerful drives and a sophisticated chassis, the fifth Porsche series delivers the best driving dynamics in its class. The Macan assumed pole position in its segment from the very beginning.

Both the top model Macan Turbo, featuring a 3.6-litre engine and 294 kilowatts (400 horsepower), and the Macan S, with a three-litre engine and 250 kilowatts (340 horsepower), defined a new performance class eclipsing all other competitors.

The Macan is the first Porsche series in which all variants are equipped with the sporty double-clutch

Porsche Panamera (G2) gearbox as standard. The double-clutch gearbox comes into its own during off-road driving, making it possible to change gears without interrupting the tractive force – on steep uphill and downhill gradients alike. The Macan has always been a hero vehicle to Kuwait’s enthusiast combining efficiency, comfort and stellar driving dynamics of a sports car that is more practical for everyday use and adventure.

At the start of 2016, a new basic model was launched on the compact SUV market – the first Macan with a four-cylinder engine. The turbocharged two-litre engine delivers 185 kilowatts (252 horsepower), enabling outstanding driving performance for this class. The Macan races to 100 kilometres per hour in 6.7 seconds, with the new compact SUV achieving a top speed of 229 kilometres per hour.

Porsche 718 – the mid-engine sports car The concept of the successful sports cars from the 1950s has been brought back to life in the Boxster & Cayman to carry the 718 legend forward.

The Porsche Boxster was first introduced at the 1993 Detroit Motor Show. Three years later, the Boxster (986 generation) was launched recalling the design of the legendary 550 Spyder racing car. The Boxster realized its potential and became a major success, with the second generation of the Boxster and Boxster S being debuted in 2004. Porsche developed the roadster into a coupé, which closed the gap in the range between the Boxster and 911 Carrera when it hit the market in November 2005 as the Cayman S. In 2015, Porsche began launching a new series of the Boxster mid-engine sports car models to feature turbocharging. It is available in two versions, boasting 300 hp and 350 hp respectively. The following year saw

the release of the entirely redeveloped mid-engined 718 Cayman and 718 Cayman S coupés, which were showcased by Porsche Centre Kuwait to Porsche customers and enthusiasts at an exclusive event held at Dar Hamad. In 2017, the GTS variants took over top spot from the roadster and coupé with their uprated engines delivering an additional 365 hp.

The Porsche Panamera – Courage changes everything A few years ago, everything to do with the saloon suddenly changed. Large, cumbersome and thickly padded instantly seemed outmoded qualities. On the road, something happened – something rather fast and dynamic: a sports car came along. A sports car with four seats, an unmistakable silhouette and performance figures normally associated only with a Porsche, and the result was the introduction of the Porsche Panamera.

Soon after, the same courage created a new generation of the Panamera that is completely reimagined by the Porsche engineers. The new generation was launched in Kuwait in January 2017 and revolutionized the Panamera concept boasting increased performance, comfort, connectivity, innovation and efficiency.

Aynur Mamedova and Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya By bazaar staff

Walking into downtown's Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya is always a pleasure. From the moment the friendly valet escorts you out of your car, the first steps you take into the hotel, to settling into the comfortable yet elegant seating at the Al Soor lounge. While you take in the hotel’s opulence, you might be in for a tasteful glimpse of behind the scenes action – the hard-to-miss Aynur Mamedova with her vibrant red curls and melodic voice, watching after the hotel and talking to everyone along the way. “It comes with the job,” she laughs, as she finally makes her way over to me to attend our meeting– “on my way down here alone, I had five different conversations!”

The Azerbaijani hotelier was not ungracious with her two-minute tardiness. In fact, it was refreshing to see how flawlessly she handled the pressure that comes along with her job title as Director of Public Relations and Communications at the hotel, embracing each interaction and challenge with pleasure. And though she breaths a huge sigh of relief as she gets to finally perform an unheard-of act in her busy day, sit back and relax, the rewarding gasp is followed by “I’m always so busy, but I love it.”

Aynur’s skill for supporting the spotlight precedes her, and as a result, being busy comes as second nature. Starting off as a TV host in Azerbaijan after completing her post-secondary studies, her resume reaps experience of music and entertainment presentation. “I worked in different sources of media, back to back: TV, radio, and OK! Magazine, where I would present and discuss the latest in music and entertainment. It wasn’t until I was approached to manage the PR for this new (at the time) mall in Azerbaijan that I started working in public relations.”

And so, her first PR job was the inevitable

path that led her to her current occupation, the one that she confidently states sums up all of her life experience. “I met a gentleman during an art exhibition I had curated at the Mall I was working for at the time. He liked the way I handled myself and offered me a position at Four Seasons Hotel Baku, which was just about to open.” This gentleman would eventually reveal himself to be her first Four Seasons GM Tarek Mourad, who taught Aynur all that he knew.

Within a whirlwind 7 years of travelling globally, ticking off a significant amount of the 100+ locations of the hotel franchise around the world, Aynur found herself in Kuwait during the summer of 2017, where, she was about to meet and eventually "marry" one of her favorite Four Seasons locations, thanks to the GM Didier Jardin and his incredible team.

“The funny thing about working for Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya is that it reminded me of my initial employment with the Four Seasons Hotel Baku,” she says thoughtfully, bemused by the fullcircle her job has taken her to. “Like Baku, I was helping Kuwait with its opening – but somewhere

along the line during the time that I spent here, I fell in love with it.” So much so that after four months back to back, immersed in a courtship with Kuwait’s branch of the hotel, she found herself committed to Kuwait and living here full time. “I love Kuwait.

It’s such a hospitable country, and even the other internationals I work with agree that the city has a soul – it attracts you and envelops you, making it easy to call this place home. I miss Kuwait whenever I’m away from it.”

This sentiment, combined with Aynur’s personal favorite touches of the hotel, (the art, the detailing in design, the exquisite indoor and outdoor pools and the breathtaking view of the city on the 21st floor, to name a few) easily makes Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya one of her favorite branches in the world. “I really love them all! But Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait and Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet – those two are special to me.”

But ultimately, what is really special is the sense of home and comfort Aynur finds at Four Seasons in general. “Four Seasons as a company values its employees, and makes moving and relocating easy. Although I’ve never actually lived outside of Azerbaijan (with exception to travels and business trips), I’m able to find a sense of home in each Four Seasons hotel I’ve visited around the world.” That doesn’t come as a surprise to us, as every time we’ve ever stepped into Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya, we’ve mutually felt nothing but warmth. “Kuwait gave me such a warm welcome,” Aynur agrees wholeheartedly at my statement, “and I don’t just mean the weather!” she continues with a laugh. “But in all seriousness – one of my favorite examples regarding the familiar sense this hotel chain offers to its guests and employees is 2012’s Hurricane Sandy. I was in New York during that time, and couldn’t leave the hotel for five days. Though I was halfway across the world from home and people were worried about me, I didn’t even feel scared! The hotel has a way of making people feel at home. It always feels like home to me, no matter where in the world, or which Four Seasons hotel I step foot at.”

And with this July marking Aynur’s 7-year anniversary working for Four Seasons, and approaching one year since her budding relationship with Kuwait, she feels more at home than ever.

“What can I say – I just love this place. I love Four Seasons! From the dining, the service, the guests and the employees – I love it all!” I can’t help but beam back at her as she gushes – and looking around at the warm, serene and friendly atmosphere, I have to agree with her – I love it too.

THE BEST OF E3 2018

Beat the heat this summer with these awesome releases

It seems like only a week ago we were watching E3 2017, and getting excited over new games such as A Way Out. Hard to believe that it’s already been a year, and most of those new games have been released and completed, and that we’ve just watched E3 2018. How time flies!

The announcement shows for each publisher ran between 9-12 June and, as ever, were packed full of great looking future titles. While many are excited for the new Call Of Duty, Battlefield, or (urgh) Fortnite news, I’ve chosen to run down my personal highlights from the show.

Anthem- The only decent game EA showed this year.

An MMO shooter with the promise of a deep story, both for single players and online teams. With EA’s recent business practices, fans were worried this would be a disaster, but thankfully they confirmed NO loot boxes and NO pay to win.

Doom Eternal- The sequel to the recently rebooted (and amazing) Doom, we got to see a short trailer showing the chaos spreading to Earth. More news to come at Quakecon in August!

Shadow Of The Tomb Raider- While this looks to be more of the same from the last 2 games, in this case, that’s never a bad thing. This game looks awesome, AND it’s out in September this year!

Just Cause 4- My friends aren’t as excited as me about this, but I enjoyed the destruction of the last games (especially the 3rd). It doesn’t get more fun than being let loose in a virtual world with the ability to blow everything up!

The Division 2- Initially I didn’t care much about this, having grown tired of the first game and its repetitive nature. But after seeing this sequel a 2nd time, I think I’m willing to give The Division another chance.

Assassins Creed Odyssey- The last AC game (Origins) was a welcome change in location, protagonist, combat and much more. With this new instalment, set in ancient Greece, we’re promised a more RPG style experience. Visually, the game looks stunning too.

Beyond Good & Evil 2- After a beautiful trailer last year, we got to see another well-made teaser this year along with some actual details of what to expect and in game footage, not to mention the collaboration with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and his company HITRECORD, where fans can contribute artistically toward the game.

Skull & Bones- A new Ubisoft game, taking the best part of Assassins Creed Black Flag (the pirate/ sailing aspect) and building on that to deliver a very promising pirate game. Definitely something Sea Of Thieves could learn a few things from!

Gears of War 5- Along with 2 other Gears Of War titles for mobile devices, Microsoft announced the 5th instalment to the popular franchise, and showed off some footage. Following from GOW4, it looks fantastic!

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course- One of my personal favorite games of 2017, released after many years of waiting and delays, Cuphead is getting an expansion, and as per the main game; it won’t be for the faint of heart. More bosses, more

levels and a new main character to play as, I can’t wait to get gamer rage all over again.

Cyberpunk 2077- A game I hadn’t heard of until E3, but has been rumored for some time. Made by the same company as The Witcher 3, and delivering the same experience but this time set in a futuristic world run by cyber punks (think of Akira to get a good idea). If it’s as in depth as The Witcher, I’m totally sold.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps- I can’t believe it’s been 3 years since Ori and the Blind Forest was released. All the better though, as the next instalment was announced at E3 this year, and it looks even more beautiful than the first game (an extremely hard accomplishment!).

Forza Horizon 4- I’m a real sucker for the Horizon series; the combination of fast driving, gorgeous scenery, banging tunes and mad stunts keeps me hooked for weeks. So naturally I was very happy to see Horizon 4 announced. Plus, as an added bonus, this time around it’s set in my home-the UK! Battletoads- A nice surprise from Microsoft, but no real details-it was just a tease of a little skit and the BT logo. Retro gamers should be excited for 2019, when this is released, hopefully we’ll see some in game video shortly.

All in all it was a good E3 this year. No huge surprises, no new consoles, but we’re in the middle of the current generation now and gaming is good. We have some outstanding hardware, so all we really need to see are more games, more games and more games.

BLADES OF UNGLORY Re-lacing our skates at Promenade Ice By bazaar staff

“I’m so scared!” are words that I constantly find myself exclaiming throughout the course of most bazaar Tries excursions. This month, when myself and the team decided to recapture our collective youth by spending an hour ice skating, I especially felt the pressure.

I’ve never personally been one for ice skating, always finding myself in a trend of being excited about it prior to its actual occurrence, but by the time I make my way onto the ice, my fear of falling takes over me. This experience was no exception.

Nonetheless, we made the short trek from our Salmiya headquarters to the immaculately maintained ice rink at The Promenade – or colloquially known as, “Promenade Ice”, where a leisurely hour of skating around the smooth, icy surface had been organized for our experimentation. Myself, armed with other fearless members of the bazaar team, hesitated as we’d picked up our provided skates and awkwardly buckled them on, beaconing toward one of the sturdy coaches/"icemen" for assistance.

Next thing I knew, one by one, each coworker was making her way onto the ice, gliding gracefully or at the very least, keeping a much more confident stance than mine. I admittedly cowered, holding onto the generous railing circling the rink, while instructors, colleagues and even passersby were persuading me within a fit of giggles who had to be persuaded on the ice in a fashion that was reminiscent of every other scary moment in my life, where someone was trying to coax me toward bravery with a cookie or treat to reward my perseverance.

Not today! After watching children as young as five whiz past me with pizazz, as well as couple of tweenaged kids dancing across the ice with ease and precision, I grabbed one of the provided skating aides (adorably shaped like a whale) and gripped onto the handlebars for assistance. Mind you, at first, I awkwardly tiptoed across the door and back, resembling a timid granny with a humpback, much like my newly acquired whale friend.

My colleagues, however, were way more adventurous. They soared, attempted twirls, and even skated backwards, and forwards through an intense looking tunnel! And at one point, the rink became abuzz with A.R. Rahman and The Pussycat Dolls’ “Jai Ho (You Are My Destiny)” and we all couldn’t help but

dance along to the decade-old track. Mind you, at this point, my whale had been taken away and I was with the slightly less efficient polar bear version sporting a similar purpose, but I was able to do the twist.

What struck me about the experience was my gained confidence – which doesn’t seem like a lot, but if you’ve ever witnessed me on the ice before this moment, you would have seen the improvement. I think that the main reason this confidence was boosted, however, was due to the fine facility that Promenade Ice offers. The ice itself was smooth and nicely broken in, with minimal slip! I was convinced that even with my extra-cautious nature, I’d fall onto the ice and sprain a wrist or an ankle. At the very least, I thought I’d have a heart-shattering wobbly moment – but everything was extremely smooth! My coworkers shared this sentiment, which would explain why they all turned into sudden Michelle Kwans on the ice. Michelle Kwan I am not, (and have a long way to be) but thanks to my seamless experience at Promenade Ice, the possibility isn’t too far-fetched. Perhaps I’ll be strapping on those skates again in the near future.

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS The all-new Taiba Hospital By bazaar staff

Taiba Hospital has quickly gained notoriety since its initial opening as a clinic in 2002. Because of its uniqueness as the only private healthcare provider in Kuwait to specialize in one-day surgeries at the time, its 2006 transition towards a full-fledged hospital was inevitable. Today, the Sabah Al Salem facility stands tall and proud after having recently completed a three-year long renovation, while maintaining and exceeding Kuwait’s expectations of the standard of quality care the hospital has bestowed to patients and doctors alike.

“My father was an ENT Consultant, and this was his” COO Lama Al Fadala says fondly, gesturing towards the repurposed office drawer set she keeps next to her desk. Memorabilia of her father and Taiba’s founder, Dr. Sanad Al Fadala, illuminate her office, making it alive with nostalgia. Though Dr. Sanad had recently retired as a surgeon, placing his Otoscope, his input is still very much active as the hospital’s Chairman. It’s impossible for Lama to forget this, and she confirms with a nod towards her father’s first clinic’s signage, which she displayed in her office, “He’s our mentor and leader, and I still go to him for advice. We couldn’t have achieved Taiba’s renovation without him.”

From Plant & Facilities Director to Chief Operating Officer, Lama plays a pivotal position as a COO that stresses on maintaining the modern, state of the art, safe and comfortable atmosphere that the hospital has strived to achieve since its inception. Handling everything from administrative matters to problem-solving with all standards, supplies and employees that come into the hospital, Lama arms herself with Taiba’s strong team to ensure that the inner-workings of the facility runs smoothly from A-Z. “Investing in human capital is a serious business. As COO, I provide leadership and problem-solving skills to make sure that doctors are happy, staff are happy, and most of all, patients are happy.” Which is why, on top of up-keeping services during the Taiba renovation, another priority was to spruce up the space to make overnight stays more pleasant. “We are a hospital, and we’re responsible for people’s lives here. But, it doesn’t mean that patients should feel like they’re in a hospital.”

However, all throughout Taiba’s renovation and expansion, the hospital maintained that all departments kept running, not allowing the process of expansion to interfere with regular schedules. The magnitude of patients and procedures that run seamlessly through Taiba on a daily basis requires it. Not only does the hospital hold the statistic of having the highest number of local surgeons, doctors and physicians employed within Kuwait’s private medical sector, but also operates 24 different departments, each of which containing a slew of talented doctors with international credentials.

“Between the doctors we hire full time and part time, and the upgraded technology we ensure on maintaining at the hospital, people utilize our resources to the fullest.” One of their proudest departments is Gastroenterology, and the hospital prides itself in using the most in its state-of-the-art facilities to diagnose, a ‎ sses, follow up with and treat several conditions in addition ‎ to performing a number of surgeries and operations. “People have a lot of confidence in this department, and they come to the hospital ready. They book their appointments, meet their Consultants, do the surgery, and go home the same day – because that’s how advanced our department is.”

Another department Taiba takes great pride in is their Orthopedic Surgery Department, which has, with its outstanding qualification, recently received an Orthopedic Center of Excellence JCI Accreditation. This accreditation joins others on Taiba’s resume, including their prized Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation, maintained for three consecutive times, and their Baby Friendly Hospital Accreditation – a true testament to the beautiful delivery rooms that Lama herself beams at with pride. “They’re so comfortable and accommodating to new mothers.”

Natural and innovative Tromborg hits the beauty stands By bazaar staff

An absolute triumph of science and nature working together is exactly what Tromborg cosmetics and skincare represents. This Scandinavian beauty brand can now be found in Kuwait, and exclusive to Alshaya. bazaar revelled in the opportunity to ask founder Marianne Tromborg a little bit more about the brand and its long-awaited arrival in Kuwait.

What first ignited the passion that led to you becoming a make-up artist?

When I was in my early 20's, I studied Danish and literature at the University of Copenhagen. As a hobby, I painted pictures in a studio and displayed them in cafes.

One day in the studio there was a photo shoot where the makeup artist never showed up. The photographer asked that if I could paint on a canvas, could I paint on skin too? These photos were seen by another photographer who wanted me to do a big shoot in Stockholm, and since then, I’ve never looked back.

Describe the journey from make-up artist to cosmetics line founder. What inspired you to create Tromborg?

As a make-up artist, I traveled the world, saw places I would have never imagined and I met some amazing people. One of them is my husband Tim, a biochemist, and I was so lucky to meet him in 1991. This became the initial footstep for starting the Tromborg company.

Tim is super allergic, and I have psoriasis, so we wanted to make products that suited our needs. In the beginning we made our own creams at home in the kitchen. We have improved this immensely ever since!

Tim joined the company as a partner in 2006. He has used his many years of scientific experience from the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, including research and knowledge about skin care, to develop the perfect combination of innovative active ingredients necessary for a modern, natural and effective product line.

There is so much science behind Tromborg, and there is also a great respect for nature. Why is it important to have this balance?

A lot of plants are known for their beneficial effects and we are known for our work with plant extracts and aromatherapy, but Tromborg is all about ground-breaking technology too. This way, the creams will work!

THE MYTH OF HEALTH, WEALTH, & HAPPINESS Everyone has monsters in the closet

Mental health has been in the news and all over social media for a couple of years now, and most recently as a consequence of several high-profile suicides. There are many good things happening ~ more and more people are talking openly about mental health, mental illness, and the stressors of life that contribute to the development of mental distress and disorders. In Kuwait, the Government is addressing the mental health act; there’s alnowair, Taqabal, numerous reputable counselling practices, and an ever-improving psychiatric department with the Ministry of Health. There are options for mental health services now.

It’s time to talk about something that often isn’t specifically addressed. Even with all these positive changes there is a truth in this equation that cannot be ignored.

Happiness is an inside job.

We are led to believe by the dominant social discourse that when we are healthy, wealthy, beautiful, successful, [insert measuring stick here] we are guaranteed to be happy. Not so.

Mental health is not guaranteed no matter who you are, where you live, whom you know, whom you love, what you do, or your socio-economic status.

None of that matters when it comes to depression, anxiety, or any other form of mental illness you care to mention. The prevailing myth that having some sort of external status is inoculation against being unhappy doesn’t reflect how life actually works.

Statistically we all know that someone who is struggling with mental health issues. In reality, no matter where we fall on the “health & wealth scale” there are monsters in the closet. Everyone has monsters in the closet. Think about that for a moment.

There is nothing external that guarantees happiness because happiness is entirely dependent on the quality of our thought life. External circumstances are experienced through the lens of an internal belief system which means the largest single influence on our internal state is what we believe about ourselves and by extension, about the world.

Beliefs are the foundation of thought habits which cause feelings which produce behavior.

Notice what’s missing in that equation? Health.

Wealth. Beauty. Successes. A partner. Children.

A career. Really, anything external is missing. We can experience an internal state of happiness in the most trying of circumstances and we can 72

experience excruciating unhappiness in the best of circumstances.

If health and money (and all they represent) don’t guarantee an emotional and psychological sense of wellbeing, what might?

1. Recognize that if you’re not happy, you need to do something about what’s going on inside. The end result may be that you change something outside but start with the inside.

2. Understand your own internal belief framework.

If you can’t articulate what you believe about yourself and your place in the world spend some time with a personal coach defining your values, anti-values, and core beliefs.

3. Balance work, leisure, and play so that life is equally about you and others. Altruism is emotionally rewarding.

4. Cultivate a habit of gratitude. Nothing does more to change our internal landscape and thus our perspective of our circumstances than to be habitually thankful. Sometimes, all we can be thankful for in the moment is that we’re breathing.

Start with that, build from there.

5. Accept that every human being on the planet

has ‘monsters in the closet’ and if they get loose, we may need help to slay them. When your thoughts go dark and stay dark for more than a week make an appointment to talk with a counsellor. Don’t let the darkness take hold.

There is so much research supporting the reality that how we think is the primary factor in our sense of happiness that it just can’t be ignored. Being healthy won’t make you happy. Being wealthy won’t make you happy. Being unhealthy doesn’t mean you can’t be happy, and poverty may be difficult but doesn’t actually have the power to destroy happiness.

Your internal landscape is yours to care for. If that space is uncomfortable, dark, wounded, or unhappy, ask for help to make it better.

THINGS CAN GO RIGHT TOO

You will never know until you are neck-deep in elephant trunk!

“You only live once!” an idiom that defined an entire generation of ridiculous risk takers, from the planking challenge to the cinnamon challenge, and every other crazy endeavour in between. However, much to the chagrin of all, there is a huge misinterpretation in the phrase.

Make no mistake, I am not casting any stones, for I too am guilty of indulging in the recklessness that is thrill seeking. I got my first taste at a young age after passing by a pedestrian bridge on my bicycle and deciding “lets spice things up!”, I pushed my bicycle up one end to ride down the other - I cannot remember exactly how old I was when this happened (in the unenlightened ages before Netflix and 5G), but the scar on my left elbow is an indication of “sheer pain and suffering” followed by the euphoria of accomplishment.

My most bizarre thrill happened much later during a vacation on the island of Phuket. As part of a tourist group enjoying many delights such as MuayThai, kayaking and an elephant show, the viewers of the latter were invited to experience an “elephant massage”, lying down on your stomach whilst an elephant faux taps you on the back. As I was a more vocal viewer, I was singled out for something 76

“special”. I was told to lie on my back and had the elephant's foot square on my chest, little did I know the staff had slipped a banana into my shorts, and that the hungry elephant was searching for said banana (yes there is a video, yes it is hilarious).

At the time, the farthest thing from anyone’s mind was “what could go wrong”? Little did I realize that if something as insignificant as a common household insect had decided to bother said elephant, I would have been forest pizza.

That is the reality of the scary world we live in.

Every comfort placed on this earth for our enjoyment can equally be a tool for our destruction, whether external (I.e. elephant massages) or internal (our own minds at work).

There is risk in everything - but we never think that far ahead for to do so would be to condemn ourselves to a life of cowering under tables, avoiding sunlight, dairy, processed foods, television death rays and gluten. How else can we think when plagued with the morose notion that the only thing promised in life is death?

However, it seems almost maniacal how one can have such a gung-ho attitude towards mortal peril, and yet exhibit a more averse, meek attitude when it comes to professional risks, like taking examinations for a professional certification, standing up to your manager or becoming your own boss. The greatest

paradox lies in how most of those that tend to classify themselves as risk seeking in their promotional endeavors, such as skydiving, are quite averse when it comes to risks of their professional lives.

We view stunt related risks as being calculated, believing there to be an invisible safety net that will catch us should anything go awry, that since its public, everything will go as planned. Unfortunately, the news sites are filled with unfortunate incidents where coordinated activities such as parasailing, hot air balloon rides and scuba diving ended in tragic disaster.

Some would not think twice about jumping out of a moving car or off of a great height or going at a great speed, however they would think a dozen times before speaking up at work about a stressful situation or worse, remain silent and take the abuse for fear of the unknown of joblessness. In business there is no safety net. Yet the calamity that can occur is contained, it is none life threatening. If an elephant steps on your stomach, that's it. Game over. If you leave your job, you can find another one, or take some time to rediscover your passion, or even start your own business.

Things can go wrong, at any point in time. Yet, they can also go your way. You will never know until you are in neck-deep, at which point you need only roll the dice and pray you land on Mayfair (Monopoly reference).

AUK shows us what it really means to be a university By bazaar staff

Most of us look back on the year in December or January, but for academic institutions the year ends when a new batch of students graduate. The hot summer months are just the right time for looking back on the entire year and reminiscing on how packed and exciting the year was for one of our favorite universities in Kuwait: University in Kuwait: the American University of Kuwait (AUK).

During the summer months leading up to the new 2017-2018 academic year, Shaikha Dana Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, Founder and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the American University of Kuwait was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Dartmouth College. Darthmouth recognized nine accomplished men and women who have made impactful contributions to their communities. It is always wonderful to start or end a new year with a bang.

Exciting things were also happening over the summer and before the year officially started.

Two students, Leena El Hawary and Yara E. AlQuorashy won the AUK Study Abroad Summer Programs Scholarship. The young women spent six weeks immersed in education and life in George Washington University. The scholarship is part of the University’s commitment to providing students with more global educational experiences.

By September 2017, it was time to welcome returning and new students back to campus.

The Office of Student Life organized a welcome back barbecue, with music performances and a production of West Side Story by the Department of Music & Drama.

Welcome Week is the best way to integrate new students to their new and exciting life at university and is a great chance for old students to catch up with their friends before everyone needs to get their head down for studying. The faculty and staff went head-to-head with the students in competitive sport events. A movie night and a Club Fair were just some of the other events that happened during the week. AUK is committed to its academics but is also invested in its students’ wellness and extracurricular activities because it knows that well-rounded students are better equipped for life beyond the walls of its campus.

It is probably why students like Shaikha AlOfan, a student in the Department of Art & Graphic Design qualified for the semifinals of the 2017 Adobe Design Achievement Awards. She was selected as one of the 642 semifinalists, out of 78

a total of 2444 entrants. The university offers a rich and diverse selection of clubs, groups and opportunities for students to explore, create and grow within their formal education and beyond.

Students are constantly supported and encouraged to find their own voices and then use them.

From hosting the Inspirational Talks Forum by the Student Council to opening the Art and Music Therapy rooms, there is always an opportunity for students to explore their creative and introspective sides. Students and staff can try out different musical instruments or try new mediums for their artistic expressions. In the age of anxiety and stress, these spaces promote mental health, wellbeing and a sense of community. All of which are core values at AUK. There is a lot of focus on creativity and arts on campus, but STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) are just as important too. In October, the Center for RISE held a talk entitled, "To Mars and Beyond: Women Leading the Way in Space Exploration and STEM"

by Dr. Kim Binsted, Professor of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Hawaii and Principal Investigator of the NASA-funded HI-SEAS project. This confirms AUK's commitment to the sciences and the advancement of women in these fields.

The students are driven by this environment to achieve more, and in November alone, two AUK teams qualified for the Advanced stages of the Global Management Challenge in Dubai, a Computer Engineering graduate won the best poster award at an International ACS/IEEE Conference in Tunisia and students represented Kuwait at the Fourth Volunteering Youth Forum in Qatar. In February, sixteen students travelled to India to help teach children and repair school chairs and tables in impoverished areas. The following month eight students flew to the Netherlands to take part in the Diwaniya Project which aims to enrich cultural and academic relations and to increase communication between Kuwait and the Netherlands.

March was just as busy, as four students majoring in Graphic Design were among the winners of the TypoDay 2018 Poster Competition.

Lindsay Gomes, a first-year student won the prize for a digital art poster in COMFEST's movie poster design competition. From the very creative to the very serious, members of the Model United Nations students at AUK, participated in the United Ambassadors Model United Nations Conference in Geneva, Switzerland. The team was awarded the Outstanding Delegation Award for the second year in a row and several team members received individual awards. It is inspirational students like these that make us hopeful for the future of Kuwait.

While the students were busy doing their thing all year, the staff and faculty were even busier ensuring that AUK as an academic institution remained at the top of its field. The Tutoring Center at the American University of Kuwait's Learning Support Services was awarded the International

TED Talks at AUK

AUK graduates look to the future Tutor Training Program Certification by the College Reading and Learning Association. Dartmouth College and AUK renewed their institutional cooperative agreement that promises to build on the success of a 15-year relationship. The University and the French Sciences Po signed a memorandum of understanding to establish cultural and scholarly interactions between their students.

But one of the most exciting things to happen this year at the university was hosting the first TEDxAUK Conference on campus. The theme for the event was "RISE�; embracing life's challenges, overcoming adversity, learning, personal growth, and self-actualization. Speakers from all over Kuwait and the world including entrepreneurs, media leaders, scientists, innovators, and poets took to the stage to talk about what RISE means to them. Conferences like TED are the birthplace of dialogue that helps propel communities and societies forward.

Like any educational institution, the year ends by saying goodbye to the graduates. It is a bittersweet celebration of the end of university life and the start of entering the real world. The

class of 2018 officially graduated on Thursday the 7th of June. A total of 424 students became AUK graduates. Not only do we welcome them into the workforce, but we’re also pretty sure that whatever these young men and women decide to do, they will excel at it. Because for the last four years, they were immersed in a community that valued an ethic of excellence, hard work and creativity.

These were just some of the highlights of a very full year at AUK. Yet, it is a typical year where students impress us with their creativity and ingenuity and the faculty wow us with their commitment to the institution that supports and empowers the next generation that will be changing the world. It is promising.

Albarn described The Now Now as a “summer record” which mostly focuses on his own singing. “I thought I should make a record where I’m just singing for once,” he explained. “It’s pretty much just me singing, very sort of in the world of 2-D… I feel really good about it.”

Let’s Eat Grandma, the experimental pop duo comprising multi-instrumentalists Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingsworth announced their sophomore album, I’m All Ears. They’ve also shared “Falling Into Me,” which follows lead single “Hot Pink.” “It’s about getting to know someone and getting over your fears about feeling insecure,” Walton said in a press release.

“Some of the lyrics reference being in control as a woman in a romantic relationship, and being the one to initiate,” Hollingsworth said. “It’s the importance of if you feel something, tell them. You don’t know what’s going to happen in life, you might as well just do it.”

Cowboy Junkies will end the six-year wait for a new album with the July 13 release of All That Reckoning.

It's been the Toronto group's longest gap between albums so far, which guitarist and chief songwriter Michael Timmins says was not by design. "We've released a lot of records," Timmins explains, "and in the business climate the way it is today it becomes harder and more difficult to figure out why one does that besides for the art of it. And you can get that part of one's personality massaged by doing live shows and small projects. A whole album is a lot of work.'

They worked with Dave Fridmann on Marauder, marking the first time they recorded an album with an outside producer since 2007’s Our Love to Admire. In a press release, frontman Paul Banks said, “Marauder is a facet of myself. That’s the guy that fucks up friendships and does crazy shit. He taught me a lot, but it’s representative of a persona that’s best left in song. In a way, this album is like giving him a name and putting him to bed.”

The next best alternative to living a life of luxury and eternal summer vacations for kids?

Summer camps! They offer the best of both worlds with the structure of a school day, and the interaction with other children, but it is still a laidback, no homework environment. It also tuckers them out, so when bedtime comes around, the little ones are sleepy-eyed angels.

We know that parents all over Kuwait are going to let out a collective sigh of relief when they find out what KidZania’s Summer Camp is offering this year. We know there are tens, if not hundreds, of summer camps available, but we still think that KidZania’s is “kooler” than everyone else's.

It strikes a good balance between features and accessibility. This, nor any phone app, is going to be able to match the big boys like Final Cut and Adobe Premier for sheer power and features-you’ll need to jump on a computer for that. But as far as advanced editing on a mobile device goes, you can’t go far wrong here.

BREAKFAST, WE MEET AGAIN Starting our day the Coucou way By bazaar staff

Breakfast is a meal we often take for granted. If you’re anything like me, you tend to not make a big deal out of it – grabbing some fruit on your way out to work, fixing yourself a little sandwich and indulging in a manousheh on the weekends. But sometimes, when you take a minute for yourself to enjoy the free time you’ve been given, it could be a bit more of an indulgence.

Indulgence for breakfast is key at Coucou, a relatively new breakfast concept that had opened earlier this year. Brought to you by the creative genius of Fatima Razzouqi, whose time spent in France gave her an appreciation for elevated bistro food – especially that of the brunch variety. Partnered with the founders of Ora and JOA, Coucou – a charming endearment for “hello” in the French language was born to redefine the way people see breakfast in Kuwait.

Redefined indeed, right down to the décor!

Everything in the breakfast-focused café exudes chicness, guaranteeing you an unforgettable experience. Set up in a layout that reminded me of mi-classic, slightly upscale diners in urban European and North American cities where the smoked salmon is cold and the pancakes are steamy. Elongated and pristine, with lush accents of greenery peeking throughout, interesting art, and jazzy music afloat, Coucou offers a cozy ambience that’s flooded with natural bright light with its wall to wall windows.

The menu, one-paged, is simple yet so imaginative that you wouldn’t even know where to begin. Luckily, we had some help with a friend of ours who was well-acquainted with the concept.

Divided into respective sections categorizing daytime favorites, our dishes were curated for us. Eggs: Classic Benedict (naturally), and Coucou’s rendition of a Croque Madame. Light Options: a cult classic, Avocado Toast – with a side of two poached eggs, please! Brunch Specials: Steak Frites, Short Rib Sliders and – get a load of this one – Truffle Rigatoni.

What would rigatoni be doing in a brunch menu? We were about to find out.

The benedict arrived in a way that one would normally expect it to: fluffy and lovely, perched atop a nest of English muffin and generously slathered with hollandaise sauce. What gave Coucou’s benedict an elegant touch, however, was the use of a single strip of turkey bacon at the base of the poached egg.

Upon tasting this, I’d have to confidently say that turkey bacon with eggs benedict might just be my new favorite thing – step aside, salmon!

The Croque Madame – all I can say is wow.

sandwiching layers of béchamel and real turkey breast (i.e. unprocessed) with raclette cheese crusting the top of the concoction. Then, top it with a fried egg for an Instagrammable feast and a breakfast friendly feel. I liked the way the egg was incorporated, giving the diner an option to remove it if he or she would prefer. Personally, I thought the sandwich was the perfect dish to cut into even without the egg, but what do I know? Perfect for sharing, my companions ate heartily, egg and all, while I swooned over the crust, béchamel, raclette and turkey combo.

Next up, the Avocado Toast. This is something that I could see myself returning to Coucou for. Whenever avocado toast is on offer at an eatery, the bread vessel that houses the dish tends to be, for lack of a better term, epic. Homemade, thick sliced, that delicious version of brown or rye toast – it’s always perfect, and Coucou’s gluten-free multigrain loaf was no exception to the satisfying rule. To elevate it further, the smashed avocado mixture had a tangy zest to it that reflected upon the simple and colorful ingredients used to make this dish come alive. All that topped with a decorative sprig of baby edible flower for a hint of sass during your Saturday brunch makes for a happy meal.

In fact, though each dish that made its way to our table seemed almost better than the last, I clung to the Avocado Toast like a mother with her newborn child – and found a playmate to complement it with: Steak Frites. I’m going to be honest and say that the fries were nice. Matchstick isn’t my style, so I wasn’t overly enthused, but their seasoning and quality definitely didn’t go unnoticed. However, all honorable mentions must go to the steak, which was secretly my winning dish in this whole experience. It was so simple yet elegantly presented, but extremely effective in flavor. Each perfectly seared piece of meat is crusted with a blend of spice (which, let’s face it, is probably just Himalayan salt and black pepper) and is accompanied by a little pot of pepper sauce. To quote myself, as I was hogging the steak bits and leaving the fries for my friends to enjoy, I turned to them and said mid-chew, “Guys, I could come back here and literally just eat the Avocado toast and the steak.”

It goes without saying that I had to be pulled away from the steak to sample other specials at the table, consisting of the Short Rib Sliders, and the mysterious Truffle Rigatoni. I was glad I did, because the sliders were absolutely lovely, with an egg patty over succulent pieces of sweet, marinated short ribs, giving the sandwich a candied effect. If that’s your thing, go for it!

But what you should definitely try is the rigatoni. Did it seem like an initial outlier on our breakfast table? I’m not going to lie – it was a weird thought to wrap my head around, especially with the egg placed on top. But, once the yolk was prodded with a fork, and the egg mixture disappeared into the plate of pasta, all of the dish’s ingredients started to reveal themselves on the palate. Crisp bacon. Creamy pasta. Spices. And of course, the aromatic, heavenly, buttery and smooth taste of truffle with parmesan cheese – a gorgeous combination that makes its way into fond memories of real-time food porn.

As usual, we were too full to have dessert.

Just kidding! When have we ever said no to a little something sweet after a meal? Coucou’s “dessert” section, however, doubles as a mainstay for sweeter breakfast preferences. In short, yes, this is where the pancakes and French Toast dishes live. But these pancakes aren’t just any pancakes! At Coucou, pancakes are turned into festive, ornate cakelike concoctions of magic. We selected a stack of buttermilk pancakes with white chocolate, rose and raspberry, and a plate of Pain Perdue: sugar-crusted

French toast, salted caramel sauce, berries and cream.

Needless to say, this was all meant to share, and share we did! Down to the last scraps of our offerings, we said au revoir to the charming Coucou, leaving with memories of the delicious experience, and the promise to return soon. If not for the snazzy pancakes, for that melt-in-your-mouth and cut-with-a-spoon steak.
