About the Cover: There are things you witness in life which can set your heart aflutter. With special thanks to the Official Saudi Press Agency and the award-winning Photographer Faisal Alshibani, our May issue covers transports us to the fragrant hills of Al Huda in Al Taif during the peak of the rose picking harvest season. Faisal told us more about Al Taif’s traditions, where the hand-picked blooms yield some of the world’s highest quality rose oil and water coveted by many across the region and the global fragrance market. “March signals the start of the flower picking season in Al Taif, which usually lasts between five and seven weeks and varies with the arrival of the four seasons to the area. And while the flower picking may be delayed by 10-15 days every year, the process still remains traditional, where flowers are hand-picked to produce the prized rose essence and perfume.” For more information, visit spa.gov.sa and follow the photographer Faisal Alshibani on Instagram and Twitter @f_m_alshibani.
I wrote and deleted this month’s intro for bazaar magazine several times, since like most of you, the topics consuming me these days are all quite serious ones, from the ongoing pandemic, to the vaccine rollout, to the semi-closed airport situation, to the recent murder, to the ongoing curfew, and a lot more. All of these topics are better discussed in person, or in the local newspapers, or perhaps on social media, but not here in bazaar, where we prefer to focus on the many positive things that still bring us joy and happiness, from the people we meet and interview, to the places we go and explore, to the food and fashion and technology we get to write about every month.
The bazaar team...
Despite all of the bad news taking over our feeds early last month, our eyes found a well-needed reprieve with our stunning May issue cover. The story begins, not so far away, in the hills of Al Huda in the Saudi governorate of Al Taif, where the rose picking season is peaking and the entire city has turned pink. With special thanks to the Official Saudi Press Agency for allowing us to reprint this photo, and the talented eye of the award-winning photographer Faisal Alshibani, we were able to share with you a very special time in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia when Al Taif is awash with the fragrant scent of blooming roses. With over 800 flower farms, and 300 million annual blooms, check out what the photographer had to share with us in the ‘About the Cover’ excerpt featured above.
Operations Manager
Our biggest motivator has always been the people. They inspire us to keep creating by helping us see the world differently. This month we got Up Close and Personal with Mona Al Baker and Salem Marafi, the dynamic duo behind Ordable/. Their startup is changing and simplifying selling products and services online in Kuwait. Farah Assaad, our Truth or Dare, candidate was unafraid of both. The Art Director has been fearless in her choices and style. We also spoke to Musaed AlMutiri, Kuwait’s favorite stylist. His most recent collaboration with COS can help us all rethink the way we get dressed. And on a more serious note, we met Dr. Carlo Piraino, Chief Nursing Officer at Taiba Hospital who told us more about the heroes who work tirelessly so that we stay healthy. The mercury has been hitting the roof and we’ve been hitting the asphalt. The bazaar Studios team has been braving the harsh sun to bring us some amazing shots and videos. We experienced the finest desert excursion in the gorgeous Ferrari Roma, and loved every moment of the drive back via the Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah causeway. If you have been toying with the idea of going electric but are still unsure, the Maserati Levant Hybrid is the perfect next step. The SUV brings the speed and convenience of a gas engine but moves towards a much greener and environmentally conscious design. We were also equally enamored with Lexus’s LF-Z Electrified world premiere. And with the latest from Toyota, Chery and BYD, all of your auto needs are covered in this special issue. We are still enjoying the Ramadan vibes until we get to Eid, so you still have time to try out MUJI’s great advice for table settings, chopstick use and storage solutions. We’re definitely ready for Eid though, and hopefully a lifting of curfew so we can parade around in some of our new summer looks. And there are so many to choose from. We are loving the vibrant pink collection from MONKI and the hottest drops from COS and so much more.

IT’S ORDABLE/ How Mona Al Baker and Salem Marafi are rewriting the rules of the online shopping game By bazaar staff
Online is now synonymous with shopping; everything from groceries, food to fashion is being bought online, and directly from brands. For producers and service providers, an online store is no longer an option. Customers expect to be able to click on a link, see products and pay without having to leave their homes. The rise of social shopping has also changed the way we view our purchases. We want to be able to quickly add what our friends and favorite influencers are wearing to our cart. Creating an e-store used to be difficult, expensive or needed a level of technical expertise that many of the smaller businesses simply did not possess. Mona and Salem started ordable/ in 2018 to help businesses launch fast ordering experiences online. Along the way, they also started getting requests for new features like dealing with wholesale orders, so additional functionalities were added. Salem and Mona realized that they had a useful, viable and very much needed product on their hands. "By the time March of 2020 rolled by, we were just starting to feel the effects of the pandemic and people were avoiding brick and mortar stores. My friends and I were wondering if the things we needed were deliverable and realized that most things were deliverable and Ord(er)able, and the name Ordable/ stuck," Mona explained. Today, Ordable/ offers a hyper localized experience for merchants - integrated with delivery providers, payment providers, inventory management systems, that cater to local business needs. Mona and Salem are committed to strong, scalable growth, and never compromising their customer experience. They have also chosen a non-commission based model, so instead of taking a cut out of each sale that is made using their software, customers can sign up for annual agreements or subscriptions. Ordable/ offers a completely mobile app-like experience right in
42
the browser or social app customers are using saving time and effort whilst buying. They have a clear understanding of not only their clients but also the people who are making the purchases, which has helped them build a robust and reliable service that works so well, you don’t even think about it anymore. Noticeably, or perhaps not, is the lack of any Ordable/ branding on the shops that they host. They have chosen to be a “white label” brand, so they don’t take any of the attention away from their clients because Ordable/ is a client-first service. Kuwait was just the beginning for Ordable/, as they have already started expanding in the GCC. Existing clients started asking if they could use Ordable/ for their branches in other countries like Saudi, Bahrain and Qatar. The Ordable/ team quickly responded and in weeks, everything was set up. They have also tied their system with global shipping providers like DHL so stores can sell their wares to people all over the world. Ordable/ also allows clients to sell products or services. The range of things being sold is wide and diverse from online personal training services to organic homemade chicken nuggets. The web-service works for every industry; from restaurants to even salons because it can handle appointments and bookings. "In just 48 hours any merchant can have their store online and ready to sell. Ordable/ provides ongoing support even after launching to help merchants achieve their online goals," Salem told us. While they are not technically a
business partner, they do however act like one by being invested and committed to helping all of their clients achieve their goals. For example, the Ordable/ team spent time in Tampopo’s kitchens watching the entire process from when an order arrives until the moment it is dispatched for delivery, which led them to update and make their processes leaner and simpler. This handson approach helped them gain the insight they needed. One of the more powerful tools that Ordable offers is the dashboard for their customers. Being able to see who buys products, when, where from and how often can really help a business grow. The information has helped many brands steer in
unexpected decisions after learning more about their customer behaviour. This data is also used for marketing. Ordable/ also offers marketing strategy and ad buying support. Buying ads on Instagram is easy, but understanding who to target and why can make the difference between a few extra sales and true sustainable growth. We all have great value that we can offer the world, whether in the form of a product or a service and the best way to share it with the world is by offering it online. Ordable/ makes that happen quickly and painlessly. If you have a great product or service, then give them a call and they will make your online store dreams a reality in no time. [Continued...]

RAMADAN AND TOXIC DIET CULTURE
Your body is worthy of love, and care not hatred By Yasmin Gamal
Ramadan can be a tricky time for many people, especially when it comes to food. The delicious dishes, decadent delights and rich meals are all about celebration. We are culturally “extra” and the older I get, the more I have come to appreciate it. The loaded tables, the loud relatives and the thousand hugs are our love language. Which is why it is frustrating and disheartening to watch people use Ramadan as an excuse to hate their bodies and to try to deprive it of its needs in the name of reaching the ideal body. Having health goals is great and even using the shifts that happen in Ramadan as a way to reset your system or to help you change your mindset is a fantastic idea. We’re already fasting intermittently anyway. Using the change in your routine to hit the gym more regularly or joining family on post-futour walks are great to get or stay fit. But it can become problematic when instead of nourishing, we resort to bullying and body shaming. I came across a couple of troubling examples on social media. One TikToker was suggesting her followers buy the special appetite suppressing tea, so they would not be tempted by all the desserts. On Instagram, a sponsored post came up for me on the second day of Ramadan which was urging the audience to step away from the Luqaimat if they wanted a better body. I am rephrasing here, and the post itself is not what shocked me, it was the self-hatred in the comments that got to me, which included people tagging their friends and throwing in cow and pig emojis. Sadly, most of these commenters were young women. Eating disorders (ED) and even disordered thinking towards food as well as our bodies is a serious issue. They vary from extreme restricting of food intake or binging and purging cycles. Regular fasting can already trigger people who are in recovery or suffering, so being hit with these messages on social media can be demoralizing or even worse, confirm and validate problematic behavior. The long term effects of EDs can be devastating for a patient’s health and mental well-being. Social distancing does alleviate some stress since the big family Iftars and Suhours are off the table (pun not intended) but the barrage of posts on social media doesn’t stop. Even if you don’t have an ED you can still have disordered thinking. Young women and girls are especially vulnerable, if every woman they meet will push away food and say I am so fat, or if I eat another bite I will end up looking like a whale. Sadly, we joke about being fat or eating until we burst all the time. We make fun of our love-handles and congratulate people on weight loss even if it was the result of an illness. Our attitudes towards diets and dieting are toxic and social media is just fanning the flames. Whether we’re getting bombarded by food and diet related memes because it is Ramadan or it is time for your beach body (this year it is a double whammy), the content is draining. To constantly have to think 46
C
M
Y
CM
about how our body looks like and how society is judging our moral worth based on our dress size is demeaning and demoralizing. Even innocuous comments can become loaded and weaponized. There is nothing wrong with attempting to achieve certain health goals during the Holy months, as the benefits of fasting are numerous including heightened brain power, greater longevity, improved heart health and better controlled blood sugar levels, but the key is balance. When influencers start trying to market laxatives and diet teas that suppress your appetite because some people just can’t stop eating, we have entered dangerous territory. Not only are they propagating the toxic culture they are also peddling products that are not backed by scientific evidence. And the message keeps getting cemented, your body needs to be fixed, regardless of how you do it. We’re constantly surrounded by people who are dieting or “watching their weight” as if it might creep out from behind a tree and pounce on them. It is true that we’re starting to see more positive examples of women who share fitness journeys that are based only on becoming stronger or feeling more energetic, the majority of the messaging is still overwhelmingly toxic; Clothes need to “flatter” your body shape. There’s a better way to pose in photos, so you look thinner. And you can’t eat kunafa, qatayef or baklava because they will make you fat. If the media is partly to blame, then so are we. We control our own social media consumption
and we need to start noticing when the people or brands we follow are trying to profit from our insecurities. We also need to notice when we point out our tummy rolls or double chins and complain to another woman or worse, a young girl, because we are becoming a cog in the propaganda machine that is telling us and them that we are not good enough. I am all for supporting other women, but I find it hard to hear them constantly pointing out their physical flaws. Instead, we should be supporting each other to love ourselves and our bodies instead. Fortunately, we’re starting to see the body positive movement gaining traction in the region. I’m noticing more women celebrating their bodies regardless of their size and reminding us that all bodies are beautiful. Personally, I would just move directly to body-neutrality: a body just is. It is the physical representation of you, and should not be a battleground where a war of social norms, ideals or values should be fought. It is something to be protected, cherished, respected and maintained. Not only that, but it needs to be fueled and nourished. It needs to be strengthened and given time to rest and heal. This Ramadan, I hope we go on a social media fast, unfollow people who spread toxic diet culture, or any toxic ideas. And to appreciate our bodies, and to use them to do good deeds, to hug our loved ones and to truly enjoy life. Photos by Diana Polekhina and Thought Catalog on Unsplash.

FARAH FOR REAL
From interior architecture to editorial art direction, it is all about the journey of artistic expression for Farah Assaad By bazaar staff
We all know the saying, ‘do what you love, love what you do’. Although we've grown up to become so accustomed to shelving this notion and to ‘just hunker down and do it’, we’re seeing more people embrace this ideology. And they are far happier for doing so. For Farah Assaad, this meant ditching her predicted path and going for something entirely different. 48
We asked the London College of Fashion certified Art Director and Stylist what she does when she’s not working, and she laughingly explained that “It’s kind of the other way around, as when I’m not having fun creating, I question what I do with my free time.” For Farah, having fun and working hard go hand in hand, and while she does appreciate the down time to relax and enjoy her time with family and friends, she’s devoted her time to furthering her career creating incredible fashion campaigns, taking on editorial styling projects, art directing, creating concepts to consulting on branding projects. This young go-getter is already making waves on our socials, with her work appearing in British Vogue, and collaborating with high-end brands like Dior. Her vision is never trend driven, and she strongly believes that it will never be so, “I prefer to create based on the way I feel and dress myself, my work, and other people accordingly.” While Farah enjoys a great, and highly engaged following on social media, she actually considers herself quite the introvert. She explained, “With all the people I meet because of my job and because of my social media, people tend to think of me as a social butterfly, but the reality is quite the opposite.” She still takes two steps back when introducing herself to new people, and would rather expend her energy and focus on the amazing work that she is doing. From local to international brands, Farah finds joy in every project that she takes on. We asked the remarkable fashion specialist if she’d always been interested in the field, and we found her views on the industry quite fascinating, “Believe it or not, my interest was very recent. I always felt that working in fashion required you to somehow become accustomed to being judged by appearances, whether it was your body image (being a model, as beauty has its own defintion in the fashion industry) and the
clothes you wore (if it’s not designer then it’s not good enough) and that goes against what I believe. People should be judged by morals in general. But when I discovered editorial fashion, I fell in love with everything that it represented. Fashion became a form of self expression and another form of art where I got to express my true inner thoughts, dreams and artistic expression.” The other form of art which Farah is referring to is her experience studying interior architecture. She always believed that she would come back from university and work in the field, but life has its serendipitous way of creating new paths, and new beginnings, to which Farah feels very thankful for. When she gained her online certification from LCF, she credits her teacher for the push she gave her, and even helped connect Farah with renowned photographers, “She believed in me with all her heart, which made me even more determined to prove her right.” A typical day for fabulous Farah is actually never typical, “What makes my work so enjoyable is that every day is different and exciting,” she added, “but I’d say the thing my days have in common is interacting and creating with creative
and beautiful minds. I enjoy meeting so many creative people in Kuwait and I am so pleased to know that there is an abundance of talent, even some that are undiscovered. Each person I’ve worked with has taught me different things and inspired me in many ways.” Farah is continuously inspired by nature, people, cities and countries, sunrises and sunsets, oceans and skies, “everything fascinates and inspires me, even the things people see as mundane and take for granted on a daily basis,” she said, “if you look a little closer, and take a little longer doing that, you’ll get inspired too.” She dreams to collaborate with Abdullah Elmaz, and considers his work an even greater inspiration, “I’m already manifesting this collaboration!”, Farah laughingly added, “but in all seriousness, having someone from the Arab world with such a talent and having made a name for himself with so many international brands is incredible. I’ve followed his journey from the very start and how he evolved as an artist and hoping I’d do the same, as he truly made me believe that if you’re determined to make it, you will.”

CONNECT
With yourself, with others and with your community By bazaar staff
Ramadan and Eid are usually associated with reconnecting with friends and family. And while many of us are more “connected” than ever, we all feel disconnected and distanced from the things that matter or help us move forward and grow in our lives. We go through the motions, we like our friends’ photos and leave encouraging comments, but when was the last time you had a really engaging conversation with someone that left you feeling energized instead of drained?
Even before the pandemic, relationships and interests were becoming shallower and less meaningful. It’s time to make a change, and Ramadan is the perfect opportunity to do this. We’ve seen many companies jumping on board the mindfulness train by offering Ramadan advent calendars, and while we won’t ask you to make a month-long commitment, we invite you to set aside a weekend (or all of them) to reconnect at a deeper level. YOURSELF “You can’t pour from an empty cup” is a phrase that you’ve probably heard many times because it resonates with everyone. If you are feeling disconnected from your own sense of self and identity, it is going to be difficult to bond with other people. How are you really feeling? Check in with yourself honestly. Do you need to take care of any immediate health issues? Are you making 52
sure that you have enough space to process and deal with life? What do you care about? What do you enjoy doing? Is there a hobby you’ve always wanted to try? Do you need to work out? You might realize that you need to ask for help, add a workout to your weekend or find a more energizing playlist that will help you move closer to the person you want to be. OTHERS It is easy to assume that you are connecting with your friends because you are regularly seeing their content on social media. Staying in touch and knowing what people are up to is very different from actually spending quality time with someone. The good news is that you can still connect with people on a deeper level digitally, but you need to be intentional about it. Whether you choose to type out a long email or make time for a 20-minute FaceTime call and genuinely
listen to your friend and ask questions, it is about the content, the topics and the care you can offer. COMMUNITY For most of human history, we needed to be part of a community to survive. Our need for support from and being of service to others is ingrained in us. Sometimes the easiest way to feel part of a thing that is bigger than us is to seek out large groups that we can belong to, whether by volunteering for a charitable cause that is dear to your heart or joining a club. The best friendships grow out of common values and interests, and by being mindful about practicing the act of giving back you might end up getting more than you ever thought you would. If you want to connect with us, we’d love to hear from you! Drop us a DM on @bazaargram on Instagram. Photo by Adam Solomon on Unsplash.

THE #MUSAEDEDIT AT COS Renowned Art Director and Stylist Musaed AlMutiri teams up with COS at The Avenues for a curated Spring Summer collection edit By bazaar staff
Sometimes, our individual style vision needs a nudge from the right person to make outfit magic happen. That person needs to possess a flair for fashion, the know-how of what would suit a given person’s body type and personality, and a kind, inviting approach. It also goes without saying that to craft the perfect ‘fit, renowned Art Director, Stylist and personal shopper Musaed AlMutiri is without a doubt an expert in this field, and his +90K followers on Instagram alone can attest to that, including us!
54
Whether you’re seeking a maximalist look to make an impression, or a minimalist aesthetic is more up your alley, Musaed has been making head turns with his styling prowess. This is why we were beyond thrilled when we heard that Musaed has teamed up with COS to curate an incredible edit for their Spring Summer collection! We spoke to Musaed to learn more about this exciting collaboration in this special interview. What was it like collaborating with COS to curate the #MusaedEdit? How did this collaboration come about? I’d like to firstly thank you for the opportunity to reach the readers and followers of one of my favorite publications that is dear to my heart. With regards to my collaboration with COS, this idea came about organically as I am a regular and loyal COS customer myself. On a personal and professional level and as one of the most prominent names in Kuwait’s fashion scene, my love and passion for the field shows in my everyday looks, which usually always include a piece from COS. As a personal stylist, I always bring my clients on shopping trips to one of COS’s locations to pick out distinguished pieces for their wardrobes. I feel that all of these factors have led us to collaborate on this edit, given the natural friendship and transparent relationship which we’ve enjoyed for a long time now. I was actually the person who first approached COS with the idea, because I have a deep understanding of local shopping habits and preferences. I also noticed that when people enter any given store to shop, they become anxious and feel a bit lost about which items to choose due to the many options out there, therefore the customer loses focus when it comes to curating a complete look. I wanted a solution to this common issue. This is how I came up with the idea of curating the best, most beautiful pieces which I feel are wardrobe staples that everyone should have, and placing them all in one area of the store. I also came up with accompanying outfit suggestions and styling ideas to make a connection with the audience on how they could wear, and style these pieces after they’ve purchased them. What are some of your favorite pieces from the collection that you curated? All of them! And no, I am not being diplomatic here, and those who know me, also know that I have my own style philosophy, which is: Each and every piece of clothing that is available in the market has its own beauty and charm, but that only comes out when worn in the right size, and with the right accompanying pieces. This way, the outfit becomes all the more beautiful with contrasting pieces and textures. And at COS, the clothing collections are renowned for their minimalist aesthetic, extremely high quality, and a variety of fabric and textures in both warm, cool, and neutral
tones. These qualities really make each and every individual piece at COS truly special on their own, but even more beautiful when worn by those who can display the clothing’s true beauty when the right size and fit are employed. What makes your edit special? What were you looking out for when you put it together? Aside from how well styled the looks of my edit are, and how much time I had spent to carefully select the pieces which went into it to deliver a different style aesthetic, is how time-saving it actually is! The customer wins, as they won’t need to spend hours looking and thinking about what they should choose and try on because it will only take minutes to find the perfect outfit in my edit. Customers will also find my styling suggestions next to each outfit and piece, all you have to do is simply try it on! What advice would you give to someone trying to create their own style using the COS collection? My advice to new COS customers is to try something new and not to pigeonhole your look when it comes to fashion, style and color ways because the variety at COS is wide and inclusive, allowing you to get creative in your choices. The end result of shopping from this edit will also allow the customer to purchase pieces that also speak to their own personal style by choosing from a collection that is natural, effortless, comfortable, modern and special. All of these amazing qualities can be found throughout all of COS’s collections. What do you love the most about COS? Why is COS the perfect brand for MENA region/Kuwait shoppers? I have a deep love for COS for so many reasons, which include: Employing high quality materials in all of their collections while also delivering a special, laid back yet modern and stylish look. How COS don’t use their logo in their designs, which makes the pieces simple and natural. The variety in their collections, which is necessary for someone like me, who likes to try different looks, and channel different personalities, and style eras with my outfits. The availability of seasonal classic staples which allow me to carry these pieces from one season to the next effortlessly. The launch of different capsule collections with interesting, unique pieces using different textures and fabrics, which always gives a modern edge with every seasonal launch. And last but surely not least, COS always delivers an intersection between special design, high quality materials and accessible price points.

NURSING MATTERS CHIEF NURSING OFFICER AT TAIBA HOSPITAL, DR. CARLO PIRAINO, EXPLAINS HOW AND WHY NURSING IS SO IMPORTANT FOR MEDICAL CARE By bazaar staff
If you have ever needed to stay at a hospital you will probably remember your treating physician’s name or face but might find it challenging to recall the nurses who helped you make your way towards a healthy recovery. The nursing staff at any hospital are the true unsung heroes, tirelessly working around the clock; checking vitals, administering drugs, providing care and so much more all with a smile and a lot of compassion and empathy for their patients and without the recognition that a Doctor might receive. We spoke to Dr. Carlo Piraino, the Chief Nursing Officer at Taiba Hospital to better understand what the nursing team does and why they are so vital to any hospital. Piraino started by explaining that “Patients come to the hospital for nursing care, if they didn’t need it they would be seen in the outpatient area.” Piraino took a long and winding road to arrive at his current CNO position at Taiba Hospital. Unlike many nurses who found their calling in healthcare or were raised in a household where one of their parents is a nurse and were inspired, he started out by helping his dad out at hospitals where he worked as the chief engineer. He enlisted in the navy, so he could study nursing and slowly worked his way to becoming a Doctor of Nursing Practice. After a short stint in Saudi Arabia, Taiba Hospital invited him to join their team and lead the nursing staff forward. At Taiba Hospital, Piraino explained that he has two main roles; ensuring that the nursing staff have the tools (skills, training, equipment and policies) they need to provide excellent care and to ensure that they have the proper respect and treatment that any professional has and deserves. With over 300 nurses currently employed at Taiba Hospital working in over 25 departments, managing the daily logistics, mitigating risks and planning for the future, Dr. Piraino has his hands full. “Patients remember the type of care they receive. They return to a place that provides good, quick and courteous care and avoid places where they experienced rudeness, delays or care that did not meet their expectations. Nurses are responsible for 90% of all inpatient interactions, so they really control how a patient feels about their hospital stay,” Piraino explained. Empathy is what sets a nurse apart. A nurse needs to be able to feel what a patient is experiencing or anticipating it, so they can help prepare the patient. However, empathy needs to be partnered with strong assessment skills. A nurse is trained to constantly assess and notice things that others do not. They register shortness of breath, swelling of feet or even a subtle change in skin tone. Their ability to see these things helps doctors reach more accurate diagnosis because they have more information. 58
Hiring the right person for the job is the first half of ensuring the best care. Dr. Piraino interviews all applicants personally to make sure that they are caring individuals who can communicate effectively in Arabic or English and that they are truly committed to nursing. Next, the head nurse of the department they are applying to work in evaluates their skill and experience and to make sure they are a good fit for the team. Luckily, this means that almost all new hires do well within the organization. Piraino explains that he has high expectations of his nursing staff because he knows what nursing, as an entire medical entity, is capable of. The goal at Taiba Hospital is to provide excellence in nursing care and to exceed the expectations of patients, visitors, physicians and each other. By implementing cutting-edge initiatives that are backed by science and research. One of the additions was the hourly rounds with intention. Nurses are now required to pro-actively engage with patients and ask if they need assistance with anything instead of just walking around and checking in on patients. Additionally, leadership rounds by the head nurses and nursing supervisors are done to assess the care that patients are receiving. Members of staff are evaluated quarterly and are incentivized by rewards based on performance. Additionally, a patient feedback system is in place that is tied to the evaluations. This helps show nurses where they can improve too. Education and training are the most efficient way of improving the level of care, unfortunately COVID-19 has restricted classroom training. Nurses now have access to online educational platforms from
organizations like the CDC, WHO and several Nursing Organizations as well as a monthly educational program that is hosted by the Texas Nurse Association in the United States. The past year has been challenging in every way. Not only has Taiba Hospital had to implement strict protocols to protect staff members and eliminate exposure they have also had to deal with shortages in staff because of travel restrictions. Taiba Hospital and the leadership teams have responded with different policies to make it easier and safer for the staff; from working with employees who got stuck abroad to being very liberal with sick
leave to make sure they are healthy and well-rested before returning to work. Nurses are the real force behind any hospital and at Taiba they are empowered with knowledge, training and a leadership team that helps them achieve their own goals as well as the hospital’s goals and values. Taiba Hospital is located in Sabah Al Salem, off of route 30 on Road 3. Call them 24 hours at 180 80 88. THE SCHOOL OF TIKTOK
TikTok is a thriving learning community—and may be the future of education By Candice Faktor
Even pre-pandemic, the decline of traditional education was already underway. With exorbitant costs and a focus on standardized test scores, the industrial education model has become increasingly disconnected from the needs of both students and employers. Worse, little attention goes toward encouraging the skills and mentality needed for lifelong learning. As the cofounder of an education startup, I don’t think it has to be this way. A recent Harvard study showed that students actually learn more when education is built on “active learning,” which promotes working collaboratively on projects. And now, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the disruption of education as kids and young adults have been forced to learn from home. In the collective reckoning on what learning should look like going forward, I’ve found that the social media platform TikTok offers some surprising insights. Over the last few years, TikTok has become one of the largest learning platforms in the world: It’s available in over 150 markets and is one of the most downloaded apps in 40-plus countries. On the app, which is available in 75 languages, creators make a variety of short-form videos on everything from cooking hacks to dance moves to crafts and math skills. The hashtag #LearnOnTikTok currently has more than seven billion views. Why has TikTok become such a popular learning platform? It embodies the following trends: Creators are empowered: Traditional education has been focused on institutions that limit and control access to teachers, regulating their relationship with their students. In contrast, TikTok is designed to make it easy for anyone to be a video creator, to share information, and to find an audience. It also empowers teachers of all kinds by giving them a platform independent from their institutions and a new way to meet their students where they are. For instance, @Iamthatenglishteacher began posting TikTok grammar lessons to help her middle-school students overcome common mistakes. She now has 1.5 million followers. Influence is the new accreditation: The top creators on TikTok aren’t there because of the school they went to or the certificate they have. It’s their skills and ability to embody what they are teaching in a compelling way that gives 60
them their authority and influence. It’s a trend across the learning sector: People are looking for demonstrated mastery or recognition versus traditional institutional credentials. Learning is fun, and learners are actively engaged: Entrepreneur Seth Godin famously said that the focus of modern education can be summed up with one question: “Will this be on the test?” He believes that what’s missing at the core of this mentality is “enrollment”—this is the idea that students are there because they want to be. TikTok captures this concept: It’s fun, engaging, and people are showing up by choice, sparked by a love of the subject matter and not for a certificate or course credit. The future of learning will be social: TikTok is a powerful tool for education because it is both a learning platform and a social network. People find their friends, scroll through content, and along the way find new groups with shared interests. TikTok’s 500 million active users now put it ahead of better-known social sites such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, and Snapchat. But while TikTok illuminates many of the trends defining the future of learning, it also has its clear limitations. The maximum video length it supports is 60 seconds, which makes a full education or deeper skills training impossible on the platform. TikTok also doesn’t provide live connection or accountability—two essential components that were also missing from the first generation of online learning. When online classes got their start, they mostly provided access to educational content, but struggled with follow-through: On average, only 4% of people will complete an online class, mostly because online classes lack a
community. And it’s the community that provides the accountability and peer pressure that helps keep people going. Still, TikTok is valuable for educators right now because it provides exposure. But it’s not a sustainable revenue source. “TikTok lets me capture and share these profound moments that showcase my work,” says Rachel Weinstock, a TikTok creator, coach, educator, and activist who offers cohort-based courses and coaching (where she makes her revenue). “TikTok is the surface area tool—letting me spread my message—but it doesn’t offer an income source. Increasingly, I use it to invite users into my paid and deeper programs.” Educators and creators such as Rachel need more than TikTok can offer. A business-in-a-box solution could make it easy to build educational experiences that create sustainable income streams without needing millions of followers. This becomes possible when educational content goes deeper than what a platform like TikTok offers while still retaining some of that social, engaging ethos that people naturally gravitate to. In a live, online, cohort-based course, for instance, groups learn together; they give and receive feedback and are held accountable. Compared to the previous generation of solo, self-paced online learning, this model can create a true sense of belonging. These are the educational experiences that work best for the teacher and learner and which can bring us into a golden age of learning—one that is accessible from anywhere, led by passionate creators and educators, and grounded in a connected community.

LA NUOVA DOLCE VITA Romance, luxury, class and elegance. The Ferrari Roma epitomizes a lifestyle that is so very sweet. Its signature Italian styling a contemporary reinterpretation of the carefree lifestyle of post-mid-century Rome, when Hollywood’s brightest stars came to experience the lap of luxury in the heart of Italy - La Dolce Vita. Once again, the new Prancing Horse 2+coupé promises the best of luxury and sportsmanship, and we experienced just that when we went on the most exhilarating trip with the beautiful Roma in the heart of Kuwait.
63
As soon as we’ve stepped inside the Ferrari Roma, we felt an electric rush of adrenaline as she flew from 0-100 km/h in a mere 3.4 seconds, perfect for those on-track thrill rides. Cruising down the glimmering Gulf Road doesn’t get better than this, as the Ferrari Roma delivers top-class performance, yet staying true to the purity of its heritage while still employing the latest cutting-edge tech to make the trip to your hot-spot of choice an unforgettable one. While we love making the ultimate style statement with the Ferrari Roma, it’s all about the thrill of the ride for us, and this is where the Roma’s optimum power from the V8 turbo engine, which also makes the Roma the most powerful model in its segment, comes into play. Thanks to the Variable Boost Management system and new Gasoline Particulate Filters, the sultry sound of the exhaust system rang true in our ears, furthering the electrifying rush of prancing around Kuwait City’s latest hotspots in the stunning Ferrari Roma. The newest coupé from The Prancing Horse embodies an utterly refined style which is underpinned by an ultra modern design language that looks just at home here careening along the Gulf Road as along the Italian Lazio coastline. The minimalist lines on the Roma remind you of the rippling muscle of the most graceful of equine beauties, the coupé straining yet powerfully pushing ahead as we drove her across the Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah Causeway, finally releasing the horsepower along the desert highway in the late afternoon. The ruggedness of the great desert scape serves as the perfect juxtaposition to the lavish interiors of the Ferrari Roma. While we admired the scenic display of endless ribbons of golden sand dunes as we drove down the highway, we couldn’t help but become fixated by the craftsmanship that defines the Roma’s interiors. The clear areas of the front that are divided for the driver and the passenger are dominated by sumptuous, beautiful leather, sharply dressing the Roma to most definitely impress. It goes without saying though, that this refined look is further exemplified by the highest cutting-edge tech, from the digital screen and 16-inch instrument cluster that’s part of the Human Machine Interface which is completely adjustable. In mere seconds, we were able to customize the space allocated to navigation, speed information, and so much more. As we made our way back toward the city via the Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah Causeway, the sun began to set, offsetting the deep sultry color of the Roma ever so romantically. It was time for those stunning headlines to come out to play. The removal of all superfluous detailing accentuates the Roma’s sleekness and formal minimalism, and the full-LED adaptive headlights, which appear as a horizontal light strip hints at the powerful structure beneath the car’s skin. As we drove off into the twilight, we listened to the deep growl of the engine, appreciating how power can be presented so flawlessly, and so elegantly, with the Ferrari Roma.

CRYPTO CONSEQUENCES
Why NFTs have such a massive carbon footprint By Peter Howson
How much would you be willing to pay for a one-of-a-kind work of art? For some collectors, the limit lies somewhere in the region of hundreds of millions of dollars. What about a work of art that has no tangible form, and exists only as a digital token that’s no more “real” than a JPEG file? Welcome to the strange world of crypto art collectibles, also known as NFTs. Like Bitcoin, NFTs (nonfungible tokens) are cryptocurrencies. But whereas individual bitcoins all have the same value, NFTs are more like baseball cards. Each token has a different value, and they can’t be used to buy things. They exist on your computer as digital representations of artworks, songs, films, and games, among other things. NFTs have been around since 2017, when the first mainstream experiment in crypto-collectibles emerged: CryptoKitties. The average price for one of these cat cards was about US$60 back then. But that’s chicken feed compared to current takings. Rights to a single digital image recently sold at auction for US$69.3 million (£50.2 million). CryptoPunk 7804 (a crudely drawn alien with a pipe) sold for US$7.5 million. A house on Mars was purchased for US$500,000. A digital house that is, not one that you might live in. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey recently sold his first ever tweet as an NFT for just under US$3 million. “But how can someone buy a tweet?” you may ask. After all, anyone’s free to click on, look at, print out, and frame the tweet as many times as they like. When you buy an NFT, you’re buying a unique certificate of ownership, which is locked away on an immutable distributed database known as a blockchain. The creator of the artwork generally retains the copyright and in most cases, you own little more than bragging rights. Creators are also likely to pass the costs for creating your NFT files (or “minting” them) on to you (around US$100 as I write this). Most of the time, what you’ll also be responsible for is an enormous carbon footprint. Counting the carbon cost of NFTs Because they depend on a blockchain, NFTs use a lot of energy. Most creators still use Ethereum, a blockchain secured using a similar proof-of-work system to Bitcoin. This involves an energy-intensive computer function called mining. Specialist mining computers take turns guessing the combination to a digital lock (a long string of random digits). The computer that correctly
68
guesses the combination wins a reward paid in a cryptocurrency called Ether. The digital lock resets roughly every 15 seconds, and the competition continues. Ethereum uses about 31 terawatthours (TWh) of electricity a year, about as much as the whole of Nigeria. It’s very difficult to calculate exactly how much responsibility the NFT industry should take for Ethereum’s carbon emissions. Ethereum was going to run with or without NFTs. But with the growing demand for digital art, NFT buyers and sellers are becoming liable for an increasing share of Ethereum’s total energy use, and some artists are starting to think twice. Alternative technologies exist that enable NFT markets without the carbon headache. Sidechains use negligible amounts of energy to process NFTs because these transactions occur on a more centralized platform where costs (and carbon footprints) are much lower. NFT enthusiasts argue that the increasing popularity of blockchain technology, with its voracious appetite for energy, provides incentives for upgrading energy grids from fossil fuels to renewable sources. Similar arguments have been made by the airline industry: in order to fund the efficiency innovations that could make aviation greener, people should fly more, not less. For NFTs, evidence shows this approach is unlikely to work. Due to the competitive nature of proof-of-work mining, booming NFT markets are encouraging
the construction of reliable coal-fired power stations, so that crypto miners don’t have to suffer intermittent access to renewable generation. Some NFT creators are trying to have their crypto-cake and eat it by using carbon offsets. Buying offsets funds conservation work, with each carbon credit purchased equivalent to one ton of carbon saved, which is either stored in a tree or theoretically prevented from escaping into the atmosphere through some sort of industrial innovation. The Offsetra company provides an emissions calculator and sells carbon credits to offset emissions caused by NFT transactions. The NFT marketplace Nifty Gateway recently auctioned eight carbon net-negative NFTs “inspired by Earth and the climate crisis.” The artworks received 60 carbon credits. Each offset was itself an NFT. NFT carbon credits (or any carbon credits for that matter) depend on clever accounting and a belief that carbon, like NFTs on a blockchain, can be immutably locked away in trees forever. It cannot. Nifty’s website explains that offsets make sense for neutralizing our unavoidable emissions, “after we’ve done all attainable actions” to reduce our carbon footprint. But does acquiring bragging rights to a digital image that anyone with an internet connection can enjoy constitute an unavoidable part of one’s carbon footprint? Photo by Executium on Unsplash.

HAVE A COOL SUMMER WITH CHARLES TYRWHITT Discover the menswear brand that is designed to make life better. Coming soon to Debenhams! By bazaar staff
Nick (full name Nicholas Charles Tyrwhitt Wheeler) started the business back in 1986 because he thought he could make a better shirt than anybody else. Since their humble origins, the brand has made a commitment to ensure all their menswear is built to last, using only the finest materials. A shirt from Charles Tyrwhitt (pronounced “Tirrit”) is not just a fashionable and stylish garment, it is also a functional item, created to withstand the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The brand creates the finest menswear, with timeless style and doesn’t compromise on quality. To top this off they provide exemplary customer service, with smashing prices and a pinch of British charm thrown in for good measure. All the shirts are made the Jermyn Street way, from 63 pieces of the finest fabrics assembled to perfection. Tyrwhitt shirts come in one of the market’s widest size and fit ranges, and in an array of colors, weaves, and collar and cuff options. And it’s not just shirts: from the sharply tailored suits to the collection of extra fine Merino knitwear, to the array of snappy accessories, every Tyrwhitt piece in a gentleman’s outfit is crafted painstakingly from the highest quality materials. This season get your wardrobe in order and look smart and chic the easy way. Linen shirt Nothing keeps a gentleman quite as cool as linen does on a hot day. Cut to a casual silhouette and in a spread of cooling colors, the pure linen shirts can handle everything from special events to afternoons by the pool. The Cobalt blue shirt, featured right, makes for the coolest summer look. Soft washed chinos The relaxed cut of these chinos (featured right) works perfectly with the special wash they’re given to feel as soft and comfortable as trousers can get. The pure cotton fabric is utterly breathable, and the fit is – as always – flawless. 70
The Oxford Shirt You can tell a proper button-down collar a mile off by its finish – just look at that elegant roll it forms as featured in this stunning Blue Oxford Shirt. This one is made from sturdy 100% cotton Oxford fabric (what else?), washed for softness and comfort.
Egyptian Cotton Shirt No material on earth is quite like Egyptian cotton. As with this special pink shirt, featured above, the fibres of Egyptian cotton are longer, creating fabric that is smoother, silkier, and stronger. When you touch it, you’ll feel how extraordinarily soft it is, and how utterly comfortable it is to wear. Cotton linen jacket Brighter weather and springtime events call for lighter outfit toppers; but no compromise on looks, of course. The Cotton Blend Jacket, featured right, combines breezy fabrics with all the top-notch tailoring details that are expected from a Tyrwhitt jacket. Smart non-iron chinos Chinos have never looked so good, with sharp tailoring in a tapered shape and just a hint of comfortable stretch. As non-iron experts, Charles Tyrwhitt applied their knowledge here; the only crease is the smart one down the centre of each leg, as featured right. BUILD A REPUTATION
A personal branding expert shares what it takes to build a successful reputation By Wendy Marx
Almost 25 years ago, management guru Tom Peters kicked off the personal branding revolution with a Fast Company article so bold and brassy it nearly jumped off the page. Titled “The Brand Called You,” it was a resounding call to action to brand yourself. Peters proclaimed: “To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You. . . . You’re not defined by your job title and you’re not confined by your job description. Starting today you are a brand.” The article deeply affected me and I’m sure many others, changing how we viewed our ourselves and our careers. It also coincided with the onset of social media and the rise of the internet, both enablers of personal branding. But there’s a hitch. Despite the phenomenal reception his article received, Peters says it was grossly misunderstood. “My biggest problem with the reaction to ‘The Brand Called You’ article is the number of people who have taken it as a selfpromotion piece, and I just despise it,” Peters tells me. Scoffing at the concept of self-promotion, he says, “It’s not about sucking up, it’s about sucking sideways.” By that he means distinguishing yourself through what you do and who you know, not cozying up to superiors or announcing your ‘specialness’ to all.” To help you achieve personal branding success, here are five strategies Peters recommends. Prioritize continued education In Peters’s view, it doesn’t matter what schools you attended or how smart you are. If you’re not learning constantly, your career will flatline. This applies to anyone, from a tradesperson to an executive. Think your career is safe? Not if you’re simply resting on your credentials. “Be a student for life,” Peters says. “Don’t let the sun set today without being a little bit smarter than you were yesterday. There’s no question in my mind that the best student wins.”
or whatever spikes your interest. This will open your eyes to new ways of solving organizational problems or even technology issues.
Seek out diverse reading material Try not to become a one-trick-pony reader, confining yourself to one topic. This is a death knell for creativity, which has been shown to be, according to Peters, a “sideways thing, not an up and down [thing].” Instead, widen your lens, read outside your work area, be it European history, jazz, art,
Network broadly Doing your work exceptionally well goes hand in hand with networking. Networking is table stakes for any career. But it comes in different forms. Some people limit their networking to a handful of contacts. Peters’s version of networking magnifies that so you become “a networking machine.”
72
Strive for exceptional performance Whatever you do, do it well. It may sound obvious, but Peters advises going beyond simply doing your job. Go to the nth degree so you can’t help but distinguish yourself. If you do that, you will get noticed. But it’s incomplete without the next point.
Take on a humanist approach In this age of disruption and pandemic, how you behave matters more than ever. As Peters puts it, “Decency towards your fellow human beings arguably is always the most important signature, but this time that’s the case times 10. I can summarize what this means in four words: Don’t be a jerk.” With so much noise today blunting the edge of differentiation, Peters’s five keys will help sharpen your image. In the process, you’ll improve as a leader and as a human being.

GETTING PAST TIRED
3 steps to start tackling your ‘productivity fatigue’ By Aytekin Tank
I knew we’d hit peak productivity when I read a story espousing the benefits of hanging upside down. Whether you bought a special table or strapped on gravity boots, the article suggested that regular “inversion breaks” could help you achieve surgical focus and crush your to-do list. Over the past decade, we’ve forged a complicated relationship with productivity. Experts, psychologists, writers, and even founders like me encouraged people to hack, optimize, and maximize their time to the point where terms like productivity fatigue and productivity shame began to flourish. Then the pandemic hit. Now is the perfect time to reset our vision of productivity. I often return to author James Clear’s excellent definition: “We often assume that productivity means getting more things done each day. Wrong. Productivity is getting important things done consistently. And no matter what you are working on, there are only a few things that are truly important.” I’m not a hard-core life-hack enthusiast. I’m more likely to talk about picking olives with my family in Turkey than my morning routine. My company doesn’t set hard deadlines; we urge staff to protect their downtime, and we encourage 76
regular vacations. But after a difficult year of grief and loss, I’m trying to redefine productivity—and I invite you to do the same. Here are three simple tactics I’m using to support this shift.
silence, if possible, without calls or podcasts for company. There’s a reason so many people have brilliant ideas in the shower; your mind has a precious few minutes to roam free.
GIVE YOUR BRAIN REAL BREAKS Maybe you’ve tried a digital detox, like avoiding devices on Saturday. It’s a smart idea, but I’m convinced we need to drastically reduce what we cram into our heads all week long. In the 1990s, psychiatrist Nancy C. Andreasen coined the acronym REST (random episodic silent thought) to describe the free association our brains engage in during quiet relaxation. She’s currently studying a small group of artists, scientists, mathematicians, and others working at the top of demanding fields.
DISCOVER WHAT LIGHTS YOU UP Notice I didn’t say “follow your passion.” When we obsess about productivity, we miss daily opportunities to experience joy, even in tiny slices. The pandemic reminded us that life is fleeting. We can’t take simple pleasures, like drinking coffee with a friend, for granted. Work is another chance to explore what makes us happy. It’s a privilege, of course, but when you follow your curiosity, stretch your skills, and take creative risks, stress diminishes and you’re more likely to enter a flow state. Meditation is another great way to explore what matters. By now, it probably feels like a multivitamin or a should on your list, but there’s a reason everyone suggests it: Mindfulness helps. A few minutes spent following your breath or watching your thoughts flutter in the breeze calms the brain. What often emerges is a bit of perspective; maybe even a glimmer of clarity about how and why you’re working, and what could make it better. At the very least, it’s a whole lot easier than hanging upside down.
EMBRACE “NIKSEN” To replenish your mind throughout the day, consider the latest lifestyle philosophy to follow hygge, ikigai, and friluftsliv. It’s called niksen, which is the Dutch art of doing nothing. While it’s bewildering to think we need encouragement to watch the coffee brew or stare out the window, niksen is a rare experience for many of us. When you finish a task, stop for a moment before starting the next one. Close your eyes and feel the sun on your face. Brush your teeth without scrolling Instagram. Make your lunch in

PUT THAT PHONE DOWN
The secret strategy that will finally help you spend less time looking at your phone By Ryan Richards—Zapier
I spend most days staring at a medium-sized rectangle—this is called “working.” The problem: another, smaller rectangle keeps taking up more and more of my attention. I’m talking about my phone, of course, and it’s regularly the thing that stops me from doing deep work. But this goes beyond my job: My phone also distracts me from my family and the rest of my life. The amount of time I spend looking at the small rectangle has gone up every year, as has the number of times I feel compelled to pick it up every day. I wanted to change my relationship with my phone—to look at it less and live life more. It wasn’t easy. I’ve tried all sorts of tricks over the years. Here’s what didn’t work—and what ultimately did. Willpower doesn’t work The first thing I tried was good old-fashioned willpower. This . . . doesn’t work. At all. Maybe it will be different for you. Maybe you’ve got nerves of steel and an infinite supply of moral fiber. I do not. For me, anything that starts with “I’ll just try harder to . . .” just ultimately doesn’t happen. Literally bricking my phone didn’t work A few years ago, I tried “bricking my phone” by attaching it to a brick-sized block of wood. I will admit: this was effective at reducing my usage, especially during the workday. I’m less likely to pick up my phone if doing so constitutes a fullbody workout. It’s really inconvenient, which made it effective. The problem: It’s really inconvenient. Sometimes, when I’m not working, I like to go somewhere called “outside,” and it’s useful to have access to my phone then. This means I would inevitably take my phone off the brick, which means I would have an unbricked phone when I got back, which means I was looking at it again. A few other things that helped but didn’t solve it A few things I tried over the years helped, but they didn’t solve the problem. They are: Switching my phone to grayscale. This made my phone less appealing to look at, which helped me do so less often. App designers know how powerful color can be to get you to tap something, and this takes away that ability entirely. It doesn’t stop me from picking up my phone, though. Turning off Wi-Fi at night. I plugged my router into a physical timer that turned off every night, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. It certainly stopped me from slipping into gaming or streaming at night, but the cellular data was always there as a workaround.
80
Deleting distracting apps. I don’t need to look at Twitter or Facebook on my phone, so I deleted Twitter and Facebook from my phone. The problem: I could still open them with my browser. What finally solved the problem: Blocking my browser Like I said: deleting distracting apps only went so far because I could always use my web browser to access them. And actually, my web browser was the most compelling app on my phone. So I blocked it. That’s right: I can’t use a browser on my phone anymore. It’s wonderful.
I did this using the parental controls on my iPhone. I blocked the browser entirely and only my wife knows the password to open it. The social aspect is key here: The hassle and embarrassment of asking her for that password are enough to keep me off my browser, and as such, off my phone. Do I think everyone should do this? No. But it’s ultimately what worked for me, and I feel a lot freer to focus now. It’s made my work life, and my family life, better. I encourage you to also think about your relationship with technology—and where you judge it worthwhile, take back control.

It features ideal dynamic balance achieved through the optimal placement of the battery and electric motors, as well as, among others, a new four-wheel driving force control technology known as “DIRECT4” that generates a superior and highly flexible driving performance, setting the LF-Z Electrified apart from conventional vehicles. Soon, Lexus plans to incorporate technologies and advanced infotainment functions that will further enrich our customers’ mobility experience. In addition to strengthening and expanding its core sedan models and SUV lineup, Lexus will pursue the possibility of rolling out models such as sports models that continue to provide the fun of driving, a car that redefines the concept of having a chauffeur, and new genres that have never before existed. In doing so, it will take on the challenge of providing new value that exceeds the expectations of its diverse customers.
Lexus aims to offer electric variants of all its models by 2025, with the sales ratio of electric vehicles exceeding that of gasolineengine vehicles. By 2050, Lexus aims to achieve carbon neutrality throughout the lifecycle of its entire model lineup―from the manufacturing of materials, parts and vehicles, to vehicle logistics, to the final disposal and recycling of older vehicles. In this perspective, and with a clear mission to achieve carbon neutrality, Lexus will reduce the environmental impact of materials’ manufacturing processes.
In March 2024, to accelerate the planning and development of diverse and attractive products that are close to its customers, Lexus is scheduled to open a new business and technical center at which members involved in Lexus-brand development, design, production technology, and planning are to unite in creating the next-generation of cars and where the environment will be one for open collaboration that encourages co-creation with external partners.

THERE’S STILL TIME TO MAKE 2021 A YEAR OF HOPE
We can’t think of our challenges in silos By Audrey Choi
We hope the vaccines will help tame the pandemic. We hope that on-going racial reckoning will—this time—lead to concerted and sustained advances in social justice. We hope that the unprecedented wildfires, floods and storms around the world will finally fuel the urgent global action needed on climate change. But to truly achieve any of these hopes we need first to recognize that the unprecedented challenges of 2020 were not a coincidental cascade of calamities. They represent a confluence of crises that are deeply interconnected. To tackle them effectively, we cannot do so in silos–we must understand their connections and address these challenges holistically. In short; it’s time to focus on pandemics, climate change and social injustice through one lens. Over the past few months, we have seen painful evidence that the pandemic and social injustice are closely intertwined. According to the Center for Disease Control, low-income communities and communities of color are far more vulnerable to infection, hospitalization and deaths from the coronavirus. Among the causes are that low income communities of color are more likely to include a disproportionate number of essential workers, live in more crowded housing conditions, and be uninsured or underinsured, reducing their access to affordable, quality health care. In addition, low-income occupations predominantly require a high degree of personal exposure and therefore infection risk. Higher paid knowledge worker professions, by contrast, are far more able to work remotely (see chart below). Meanwhile, climate disasters have continued to break records this year—both in terms of economic damage and lives lost. Global economic losses from natural disasters amounted to $175 billion this year, while thousands have died and tens of millions more have been displaced. Climate change, social injustice, and disease have converged, and together, they are taking an outsized toll on the same vulnerable groups. To truly address any one of this unholy trinity, we must seize the moment for a new type of systems thinking that takes a holistic approach to these challenges. This may sound insurmountable, but it is not. The innovations we need might come from a stroke of genius in a lab. But they might also come from approaches that think about the challenges through a holistic lens. Here’s one small example that gives me hope: 86
The Bronx Hot Sauce is an artisanal hot sauce now broadly available through major retailers like Whole Foods. This hot sauce emerged, in part, because investors, developers and a community came together to do more than just fix broken buildings. At Morgan Stanley, we sought to rescue distressed properties as part of our community development financing efforts, instead of focusing solely on the physical rehab of buildings, we directed investment to affordable housing developers also committed to the well-being of the residents. For one project in the Bronx, community gardens replaced empty backlots of rehabbed buildings, and the gardens were accompanied by nutritional programming and lessons on how to best garden in the city. Throw in a pepper ideally suited for growth in New York and an entrepreneurial chef with a good recipe, The Bronx Hot Sauce was born. These urban gardens, and their peppers, now provide a new source of income for the residents and also enable them to feed fresh, healthy produce to their families, who now live in attractive renovated apartments. This all came about because rather than looking at the problem in silos—distressed properties; low-
income tenants; social isolation; poor nutrition, and bad health outcomes—it was viewed as a holistic challenge. Addressing only one silo and ignoring the rest can often be like pouring water on sand. But tending the whole system is what can lead to lasting transformation. The good news is that consumers and investors alike are increasingly focusing on sustainability. Sustainable investing—once regarded as a niche—is now fully mainstream, accounting for $1 out of every $3 under professional management globally. But even this great momentum is just a start. To unravel the complex tangle of structural, systemic challenges we currently face, we need to look for new coalitions and new collaborations, focusing on climate change, pandemics, and social justice. Now is not the time for rose colored glasses. Nor is it the time for siloed microscopes. It is time to focus on our major challenges through a 360° lens. Together. An amalgamation of statement pieces and relaxed essentials form the foundation of the wardrobe. Loose-fitting silhouettes are designed to live in, whether at home, on the beach or in inner city locations. These fabrics are durable, whilst appearing weightless, fostering movement and draping. Repurposed materials are adopted throughout, with recycled nylon utilized in swimwear. A continued focus on material innovation is highlighted within accessories. Developed by Bloom, whose manufacturing process helps to clean and restore the environment, men’s sandals feature a flexible, high performance foam partly made from Algae Biomass. Bloom is a brand by Algix, based in Meridian, Mississippi, USA. They transform air and water pollution into sustainable ingredients for consumer products. In Womenswear, a relaxed and effortless approach to the season endures, highlighted by throw-on shirt dresses and swimwear styled in a ready to wear guise. Feminine blouses and cut-out detailing harmonize with utility accents. A 90s minimalist aesthetic is achieved through streamlined silhouettes and clean line layering, while craftsmanship remains central to the collection with an exploration of smocked details and braiding. The color palette is framed by bright whites, contrasting against summer darks to inject positivity and vibrance. Within Menswear, a streetwear influence resonates throughout the season; wide legged trousers, pull-on shorts and light layering pieces create a relaxed dress sense. Set dressing and graphical stripes elevate looks. The Menswear color palette has a strong neutral ground, with a focus on shades of navy and green. Washed teals and light beige offer opportunities for tonal dressing. The collection will be available in stores from April 1st. Visit COS at Grand Avenue- The Avenues, Al Kout Mall and Marina Mall. REFRESH YOUR RESUME
The only résumé template you’ll need for 2021 By Marc Cenedella
Whatever career plans we hoped to achieve last year likely got torn up by the pandemic that also scrambled our economy. To get back on track for 2021, think about updating your résumé both to take advantage of opportunities presented by a vaccinated world and to defend yourself against the downsides of the coronavirus recession.
The good news is that the unemployment rate for college-educated Americans has returned close to pre-COVID-19 levels. This rate of improvement has had a big impact on businesses’ enthusiasm for hiring. Now is a time to carefully review your résumé to position yourself well for what the year ahead may bring. Showcase your remote skills We’ve all learned to work and succeed in new ways in a very short period of time. On your résumé, highlight for future employers how you’ve taken the opportunity to grow during the pandemic. Recruiting and managing remotely, keeping up with communications through Zoom, taking your client schmoozing skills to new levels online—all of these achievements deserve recognition on your résumé. For your current or most recent job, be explicit in your top bullet points on how you helped your team and your company succeed despite the odds. If your company thrived in 2020 There were winners in 2020. Home entertainment,
90
online retail, delivery, remote-friendly business tools, all prospered in an environment that was kind to companies enabling socially distanced living. Some combination of speed, volume, and rapid coordination helped your team and your firm make it through the pandemic with flying colors. If this is your situation, be explicit about your role in the fast-changing environment and how you helped turn lemons into lemonade. If your company suffered in 2020 Conversely, most businesses were hurt by the pandemic. Airlines, hospitality, restaurants, physical retail, and more all suffered greatly, and still do today. Describe how you helped your company respond to the pandemic and the measures you took to soften the blow. If the pandemic turned into a layoff for you, and that layoff has turned into an employment gap of four months or more, take comfort. This is the most forgiving employment market of our adult lives. Even more so than during the Great Recession, employers understand the capricious, unfair, somewhat random, impact of the pandemic.
There’s no need to apologize, or even address, the reasons behind your layoff. Employers are familiar with the news. Just list the facts, including your employment end date (don’t be tempted to falsely list “-present”), and march ahead, keeping the focus on your ability to contribute to the future. If your employment gap has extended for more than four months, it’s useful to have some professionally related activity on your résumé. Whether that’s participating in an industry association, having kept up an active blog, completing online nano degrees or courses, or volunteering for a nonprofit, it helps position you as someone who is taking advantage of the downturn to stay active and give back. Our new year, 2021, is shaping up to be much brighter for knowledge workers, and you can take comfort in the steadily improving economy. Getting your résumé updated and post-COVID-19 ready now will enable you to soar in the year ahead.

NEW MASERATI LEVANTE HYBRID Opposites attract at the World Premiere of Maserati’s first hybrid SUV By bazaar staff
The Maserati Levante Hybrid was presented to the world in both a physical and digital World Premiere event. In fact, the dual nature of Maserati is shown at the Shanghai Auto Show for its live presentation, and, for the rest of the world, in a virtual launch event on the brand’s website houseof.maserati.com.
92
With the Brand’s first electrified SUV, Maserati takes a major step forward in its strategy for electrification, which began last year with the Ghibli Hybrid. “Faster. Greener. Unique”, Levante Hybrid is faster than a diesel, more sustainable than diesel or gasoline, and unique in its specific characteristics. The Maserati SUV, which has already made an impact in the history of the Brand with its record-breaking figures, now presses ahead into a future in which all new Trident models will be electrified. Maserati is innovative by nature, and with Levante it pursues the philosophy behind its entry into the world of electrification: the aim of improving performance while staying true to the Brand’s values, delivering speed and agility while saving fuel and reinforcing the Trident’s dedication to driving pleasure and luxury. The result is a hybrid SUV that retains the distinctive roar of every Maserati. Levante Hybrid combines the 4-cylinder, 2-liter engine with a 48 volt Hybrid system to recover energy during deceleration and braking. The hybrid car weighs less than the 6-cylinder engine equivalent (both diesel and gasoline), and above all has an even better weight distribution since the battery is placed in the rear without compromising the load capacity and optimally balancing the masses of the vehicle. All designed to make Levante Hybrid even more agile and fun to drive. Thanks to a maximum power output of 330 hp and torque of 450 Nm delivered from just 2,250 rpm, the performance data of the new Levante Hybrid, only available with all-wheel drive, is impressive: a top speed of over 240 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 6 seconds.
In terms of appearance, the Levante Hybrid launch version is characterized by a new metallic tri-coat color called Azzurro Astro, available as part of the Brand’s customization program, Maserati Fuoriserie. Other exterior and interior details contribute to this car’s immediately recognizable design: some are in blue, the shade chosen to identify hybrid cars, already used by Maserati on Ghibli Hybrid. On the exterior, blue characterizes the three iconic side air ducts, the brake calipers and the C-pillar logo. The same blue shade reappears inside the car, specifically on the embroidered seams of the seats. Levante Hybrid is connected, thanks to the new Maserati Connect program. Having your Maserati connected at all times enables an eye to be kept on the car’s health,
and Maserati Connect will alert the driver when a service is due, improving the customer care experience. With a Smartphone or Smartwatch, drivers can stay in contact with their car via the Maserati Connect App; this is also possible from home via their virtual personal assistant (Amazon Alexa and Google Assist). Special guests at the digital premiere of Levante Hybrid were David Beckham, the new Maserati Brand Global Ambassador, and Dardust, with an exclusive soundtrack.

4 SIGNS IT IS TIME TO MOVE ON FROM YOUR CURRENT JOB
It’s time to say goodbye By Art Markman
As the months of the COVID-19 pandemic have worn on, lots of people have had time to reflect on their careers. For one thing, a lot of people have lost their jobs or have had to reorient their focus because of the influences of the pandemic on their work. For another, work has played a more central role in many people’s lives because social interactions and hobbies have been harder to pursue.
Some people have become more committed to their jobs and careers in this period. Personally, I was asked to participate in COVID-19 planning for my university, which led to a number of new opportunities that have enriched the work I’m doing. But many other people I have talked with are questioning how long they should stay in their current jobs. Here are four signs that it is time to think about taking a new job (or a new role within your current organization):
Learning and growth Even if the line of work you’re in is a great fit for your values, you may still find yourself stagnating at work. Lots of research has explored the benefits of having a growth mindset at work, in which you believe that you can learn anything you need to in order to succeed at work. A downside of this growth mindset, though, is that if your job becomes routine, you will not feel fulfilled.
Your values and your contribution Your satisfaction with work depends a lot on your core values. Research by Shalom Schwartz and his colleagues explores the values people hold. These values are driven by cultural factors as well as individual experiences. Your values influence what you find satisfying at work. For example, if you value achievement, then you strive for advancement at work and enjoy opportunities to demonstrate your abilities and successes. If you value benevolence, though, you might prefer to contribute to the wellbeing of people around you through your work. Being recognized for your success may be less important.
The optimal challenge Part of what keeps work exciting is that you’re ideally working in a zone in which you are right at the leading edge of your competence. That is, there are certain things you know how to do so well that you can do them without thinking. There will always be some humdrum activities that are part of the workday. That is inevitable. But the best work experiences induce a state of flow, in which you are completely immersed in the tasks in front of you. To achieve this immersion, you have to be working right at the limits of your ability. If the task is too easy, it’s easy to become aware of
94
your surroundings. If the task is too hard, you get frustrated and can’t engage deeply with the ask. Learning from the pandemic Many people who really need to move on from their jobs know it already. They just haven’t been able to generate the energy to start looking for more opportunities (either inside their current firm or elsewhere). A daily routine creates a lot of inertia. On top of that, people get anxious about the unknown, and so taking on a new role can be daunting. All of us have lived through an extraordinarily difficult year that has led us to think about what is important. Use that experience to ask yourself what aspects of your life now you want to maintain post-COVID-19. If you’re unfulfilled in the role you play at work now, use the energy from this year of disruption to spring into a new job as we exit the pandemic.

IKEA ART EVENT COLLECTION 2021 WHERE ART AND FUNCTION BLUR TOGETHER By bazaar staff
Art Event Collection
Can a piece of art also be a functional everyday object? IKEA launches the IKEA Art Event collection 2021 with the aim to explore the sweet spot between art and function. For this ten-piece limited edition collection, IKEA has collaborated with some of the world’s most relevant and current artists of today; to create inspiring art pieces that will capture your imagination, which, at the same time, double-up as useful household items to be picked up, put back down, switched on and then off. It’s a wonderful new vision for art and home that doesn’t play by the rules. The collection will be available at your IKEA store and IKEA.com.kw on May 24th, 2021. 96

Blanket by Stefan Marx KD 9.500 Since 2015, IKEA has collaborated with artists from around the world to create Art Event collections, celebrating various expressions of art through different genres and crafts; hand woven art rugs, toy art figurines in crystal glass and wall art such as photography, street art and illustrations. The purpose of these collections has remained the same throughout the years; to democratize art and make it accessible and affordable for everyone. The ambition of the sixth edition of IKEA Art Event collection is to bring art to the homes of the many people. It is a limited collection that’s all about the magic that happens when the line between art and functional design blurs. This range of home furnishings presents an ingenious perspective on everyday things, inviting the wonder and curiosity sparked by art right into your home. To embark this journey, IKEA invited artists with different backgrounds from different parts of the world; Daniel Arsham (New York), Gelchop (Tokyo), Humans since 1982 (Stockholm), Sabine Marcelis (Rotterdam) and Stefan Marx (Berlin). “We want to show that being an artist or being a designer does not mean that you have to stay in one box, you can work within different fields, and that this new movement has had a profound impact both on the design and art scenes today,” says Henrik Most, Creative Leader for IKEA Art Event. “IKEA ART EVENT 2021 seeks to celebrate the sense of wonder
created by these fields coming together, and by taking art out of the gallery and into the home.”. The collection consists of 10 home furnishing objects challenging the perspective on everyday objects whilst paying tribute to everyday creativity: wall decoration lighting pieces by Sabine Marcelis, a wall clock by Daniel Arsham, a table lamp and a torch by Gelchop, a vase and a throw by Stefan Marx and wall decorations by Humans since 1982. “Each item in this collection has a practical function, and at the same time it is an art object. The traditional idea of art being high-end and design being part of mass culture simply is not relevant anymore. The two go fantastic together – that is where the magic happens”, says Henrik Most. Vase and Blanket by Stefan Marx Inspired by everyday life, the Berlin-based artist makes typographical artworks, based on conversations he overhears among friends and strangers, as well as lyrics and sentences plucked from his favourite songs and books. The two products boast emotive phrases: the familiar wail of “I’m so so so sorrryyyy” on the vase, and “I wait here for your forever as long as it takes” on the throw, which the artist scribbled in his notebook, after seeing the message graffitied onto a wall in London. These are pieces where you can add your own personal touch – flowers can be arranged in the vase as an expression of love or as an apology; the throw can be folded up and unfolded, carried with you and around you. Led Wall Lamp by Sabine Marcelis For her contribution to IKEA ART EVENT 2021, Marcelis was inspired by Italian painter Lucio Fontana’s slashed canvases and wanted to translate this simple gesture – a cut through a surface – to a light fitting. The wall lamps, which come in two different sizes and can change five different colours, are a departure from her usual lighting designs, where she works

with white light passing through different (often transparent) materials. In contrast, her IKEA lamps explore the wonderful effects created by a dynamic light emanating from a single, solid surface. Their function is to create an atmosphere at home – they can change the mood of any space. Table Clock by Daniel Arsham Since his earliest paintings and experience working in stage design Daniel Arsham has been interested in the subject of time. His table clock contribution reflects his ongoing preoccupation with questions of movement, materials and architecture. By participating in this year’s IKEA Art Event, he hopes his contribution will bring art into the homes of the many. He considers the table clock to be a striking example of function merging with the emotional resonance associated with seeing a great work of art. Drone Wall Decoration by Humans since 1982 For their contribution to IKEA ART EVENT 2021, this dynamic duo took the drone, a modern technological object associated with surveillance, and put it into an aluminium display case resembling a butterfuly collection. By pinning the drones inside the cabinet, they make us think about how strange it is for a present-day technological item to be static as though it is a timeless artefact or specimen. The duo hope that their wall pieces will resonate with IKEA customers; they believe that they will fit into any kind of home.

Allen Key Lamp by Gelchop Gelchop’s ideas often emerge from thinking about how to improve the quality of daily life – according to the collective, the inspiration for their pieces “comes from everyday ‘aha’ moments”. For this collection, Gelchop members Ryota Morikawa, Tetsuya Ozawa and Ryohei Takahashi have put their own spin on what is arguably the most iconic IKEA item of all: the Allen key, and have created a table lamp and torch (available in metallic blue and silver). The modest Allen key has new value as it’s no longer just a practical tool to assist in the making of furniture, but a fantastic art object too.
The collection will be available on May 24th, 2021 at IKEA 360, IKEA The Avenues and at www.IKEA.com.kw. For more information, please call 184 0408 or follow @IKEAKuwait on Instagram.

DREAM SMALLER
Why abandoning an ambitious goal this year is completely alright By Tracy Brower
If you are ready to give up on any of your personal or professional goals this year, it is ok. It’s a natural reaction during this unprecedented year. I’m here to tell you it’s okay—and you probably don’t need them anyway. You’re in good company if you’ve given up on the big shifts. According to widely-cited research study, only 19% of people keep their New Year’s resolutions. In addition, this may not have been the best time to make changes, given all that’s going on with the pandemic. You may also face “change saturation,” or in other words, you’ve had to make so many transitions, you just can’t make any more. To prevent yourself from becoming overwhelmed, focus on attainable aspirations. Here are a few recommendations. DREAM ON A SMALLER SCALE Cultivate gratitude. Appreciate the little things. When you’re more tuned into what you have, you’re less focused on what you still want. This “enough mentality” can be helpful to your mental health. You don’t have to make big changes to achieve satisfaction or happiness. Contentment starts with gratitude. Avoid perfectionism. Often, the fuel for big changes is a feeling you or your situation are not perfect. Remind yourself that perfection is a myth and focus on what’s working. This will help you find fulfillment with your present reality (even if it’s not all you aspire to). Make a list, then edit down. Another great way to keep your ambitions reasonable is to make a list of all you want to accomplish and then eliminate everything but the top three items. A surefire route to frustration is to expect too much and put unrealistic pressures on yourself. Instead, focus on just a few vital things you want to accomplish, rather than a long list that does not empower you. After you’ve accomplished the first three goals on your list, you can always come back to the others, but give yourself a fighting chance to achieve the most integral top three, first. MONITOR YOURSELF Create routines and conveniences. When you want to nurture a behavior, make it a default so you’re not thinking consciously about it. Research published in the European Journal of Social Psychology found when you repeat behaviors in a consistent context, it helps with habit formation and these take hold much more effectively. You can use this to your advantage. Instead of making
100
a conscious choice each morning whether you want the donut or the smoothie, have the sliced fruit ready to go and the blender on the counter so when you arrive bleary-eyed to the kitchen in the morning, you’re just doing what’s already laid out. Start each day with the routine of responding to quick-hit emails. Rather than deciding what to work on first, just create a routine where you’re repeating behavior that works without as much conscious thought. Plan ahead. When you can plan for things, you can usually control them more effectively. If you’re going to be in a situation that might create challenges for your new behaviors, make a plan. Perhaps you’re going to the grocery store and you can make a plan to avoid the cookie aisle. Or if you’re back in the office, avoid the calorie-tempting socially-distanced happy hour with colleagues by leaving right on time and get a head start on the big project you’re working on. Anticipating what might present challenges will help you overcome them. FIND SUPPORT Find friends. Create a virtual group of people also trying to make changes. Perhaps there’s an online group where you can exchange healthy recipes or
provide mutual encouragement for regular trips to the gym. Also tap into your existing network and ask your friend to check in with you to see if you’ve had your workout for the day. Seek out colleagues who can nurture the writing skills you want to develop. Find people who encourage you, provide feedback, and remind you about your ability to succeed. Use technology thoughtfully. There are a wide variety of virtual solutions to help you shift your behavior. Download the app that allows you to track your water intake or the app that will send you notifications if you haven’t moved enough in the last hour. Look for apps that can help you learn the new language you’ve been wanting to add to your skill set or that can connect you with colleagues who have like-minded ambitions. Behavior shifts are most likely to occur with planning, reminders and feedback. So find apps that provide these three kinds of support. Give yourself permission to do less for now and know you can always do more later. In the meantime, stay strong and be satisfied with a little progress for now. & OTHER STORIES CELEBRATES FEMALE ROLE MODEL WITH THE FIRST KIDS CAPSULE COLLECTION By bazaar staff
A collection that celebrates joy, optimism and wisdom For the first time ever, & Other Stories has created a collection for women and kids, from one and a half to eight years old. Featuring summery, printed dresses and sets all in sustainably sourced materials, the collection is inspired by the importance of female role models in a young girl’s life. Whether it’s with her mother, grandmother, aunt or anyone else with a close bond. Joy, optimism and wisdom flows through each precious relationship and into every piece of this beautiful collection.
102
Created in & Other Stories’ Paris Atelier, the collection has a romantic, elegant charm that evokes languid summer days in the garden. There’s also a sense of passing down a passion for fashion and personal style from one generation to the next while cherishing the unique relationship between women and girls. Through all of life’s stages, confidence and love abound. “I’m proud that we can showcase our design aesthetics and love of storytelling to a younger generation, all the while celebrating female role models in a girl’s life,” says Marthe Bianchi, Designer at & Other Stories. There are six matching looks – a dress for the woman and a dress or coordinated set for the girl – with inclusive sizing details in mind. A white broderie anglaise midi-dress with smocked body, ruffled sleeves, and a contrasting A-line
skirt is translated into a two-piece set of top and shorts in the same silhouette for the girl. The knee-length dress with puff shoulders and ruffle hem in both versions comes in a pink/purple on white floral print or a black polka dot print on white, while a plant-dyed soft pink maxi-length dress has tie-up shoulder straps, smocking details around the chest, broderie anglaise trim and a deep ruffled hem in both versions, as well. This is the first time & Other Stories has used plant dyes for the soft pink. The dye comes from the Rubia cordifolia, a flowering plant in the coffee family. The white empire waist midi-length dress in a dotted floral print has wide shoulder straps and side slits up each leg, while the kid’s version has a smocked chest and tie-up shoulder straps. The sage green floral print midi-length dress in Tencel lyocell and linen with cross-body wrap,
voluminous sleeves and deep ruffled hem turns into a two-piece set of top and shorts with ruffled sleeves and scalloped hems. All pieces except for the sage green ones are made from organic cotton.
This collection will launch at & Other Stories stores this May, 2021. Explore all the & Other Stories’ collections in the boutique in Grand Avenue – The Avenues. Follow @andotherstories on Instagram for more lifestyle ideas from & Other Stories.

WHY YOUR CONSTANT BUSYNESS MAY JUST BE LAZINESS
Don’t lie to yourself By Sara Sabin
Over the course of a day, how many times do you hear the words: I’m just so busy? How often do you utter those words yourself? Many of us say it like it’s a badge of honor, an indication of our self-worth. But what if it isn’t? Following the herd doesn’t make us stand out. To get to the next level in your career or business, the answer is often not to do more and be even busier but to consider how to do things differently. Choose not to buy into the collective delusion that busyness is a good thing. As Tim Ferris says in The 4-Hour Workweek, “Being busy is a form of laziness—lazy thinking and indiscriminate action. Being busy is most often used as a guise for avoiding critically important but uncomfortable actions.” If you’re busy all the time and not getting the results desired—individually or with a team— it may be because you’re not actually taking the time to first focus on the activities that move the needle. This becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy: You make yourself so busy that you don’t have the time to reflect and get off the treadmill to review your actions. And so, you stay locked in a zone of busyness and limited thinking. 104
What can you do about it? I have a few recommendations that can help pull you out of the cycle of constant busyness. Ease up immediately Give yourself time off. That could be an hour or two, a day, or a week. Schedule this time off and remove all distractions coming from other people and technology. The idea of this time is to get out of your frenetic busy state and into a relaxed alpha brain-wave state, which is the optimal state for creative problem-solving and reflection. Doing this consistently is important, to challenge our busyness and gain new insights. Identify activities that don’t move the needle Reduce the number of things that you focus on by paring back to two to three core areas. You might need to experiment to work out which areas you should be focusing on. But the activities that you choose to do should, as far as possible, be aligned to your skills and talents and create the biggest impact in relation to key business metrics. For the activities that do not align in this way, consider stopping them, delegating as much as possible (using short-term, cheaper solutions, if necessary, as an interim), or creating a timeline to fill in the skills gaps you have.
Reframe priorities Once you’ve identified key focus areas, stop writing endless to-do lists and reprioritize instead, so that most of your time is taken up by things that move the needle. Then, hold yourself accountable to doing these key things—consistently, every day—that move you closer to key results. Focus on important (not urgent) Focusing on what is important is crucial to longterm success. For instance, it is easy to put off important and directive activities like crafting a company or personal vision and mission statement. We might tell ourselves that it is not urgent, but this is a faulty argument. This stalling and avoiding may lead to problems further down the line—for example, when a team has no common vision and goal to work toward, or a company marketing message is inconsistent, or the actions every employee takes are confused and mismatched. Focusing on these foundational blocks stops early issues from becoming urgent problems down the line.

ADDRESSING THE GENDER GAP
The business case for supporting female managers By Laura Hamill
This year, we’ve watched entire industries falter, intensifying the inequalities that have lurked just beneath the surface of our economy for so long. Even back in May we knew: the pandemic is disproportionately affecting people of color. COVID-19 has hit women hard as well, exacerbating gender gaps in workplace experiences. New data shows that employers are failing to address the problem—whether that’s down to a lack of awareness or a “not our problem” mentality, companies are missing an opportunity to support employees and strengthen their organizations.
Before COVID-19, I’d often pause to think about my role as a woman—and the leader of a technology company. Small interactions sent me on a winding train of thought: Like many professional women, regardless of seniority or line of work, I’m constantly trying to negotiate the different workplace expectations and experiences of men and women. COVID-19 has deepened those differences. Data maps a crisis of corporate culture In early March, Limeade launched the 2020 Employee Care Report. We surveyed 1,000 employees on burnout, well-being, and perceptions of employee care. Employers came up short on care. Burnout levels were high and mental well-being was suffering. Considering the pandemic’s profound impact on society, we had to look again. The results were alarming but not unexpected: Not only are managers carrying the weight of their team’s well-being, but male and female managers are living wildly different remote work experiences.
108
Female managers reported lower levels of job security and well-being than their male counterparts. While 60% of male managers said they felt “extremely comfortable” asking their employer for a day off to benefit their well-being, just 25% of female managers said the same. Employers need to understand that supporting all employees means listening to the women in crisis across their organizations. Their experience as managers—and across seniority levels, for that matter—is an organizational concern that we can’t wait to act on. Employee retention depends on it. Engagement and well-being depend on it. Getting more women in leadership roles five to 10 years from now depends on it. Managing an urgent need for change Addressing these concerns starts with how we manage our managers. We already know that managers tend to think they’re good at listening, empathizing, and supporting people when they’re really just talking shop. Companies should invest in improving one-on-one meetings as well
as train managers to look for signs of burnout or disengagement so they know how to use the available resources when they see it. This training should have at its core a focus on improving the emotional intelligence of managers, but also what to do when they do spot the signs of burnout. We can learn from this crisis—and the compounded challenges professional women face. We’re hearing that our workplaces can be more human. It’s a message that women are delivering loud and clear through their perceptions of employer care. They’re here to tell us that this problem is urgent. For the good of all, we need to listen.

H&M LAUNCHES GLOBAL INITIATIVE TO SUPPORT KIDS
New platform will find and empower role models making progress on social equality, sustainability, education and more By bazaar staff
Kids are more informed, engaged, and capable than ever before. There are countless examples of youth taking action to make our world a better place, filling a vacuum left by those who we’d normally look to: adults. At a time of social and environmental upheaval, leadership has never been more paramount. This fundamental need inspired the company to explore how it could play a part in supporting the role models who are right in front of us and are shaping our future.
Through the initiative, H&M will bring forward, champion and tell the stories of young changemakers from around the world. H&M wants to support, improve and contribute to a better future for children and parents alike. We believe that the world needs to embrace the optimistic, collaborative, free-thinking spirit of kids. “As a company that stands for progress, we feel a certain responsibility to use our size to create change today and for the future,” says Pascal Brun, Global Sustainability Manager H&M. “We’re ambitious in our goals to make our business more equitable and sustainable so the world is better for future generations. Part of that is making the decision to amplify the voices of role models who are making a difference today: kids.” H&M worked with double Oscar-nominated director Bryan Buckley and crafted a short-film to make the world talk and rethink the role models we have been looking up to. The work highlights
114
initiatives big and small that improve our world. The film’s purpose is to illustrate how young people view adults today, while evoking the central idea that the leadership and the urgency for change we need is within them. In order to progress, H&M asks if we need to rethink our role models, and then also puts out the call for others to join the movement, lifting kids as the role models we all truly need — those we can learn something from. We want to encourage people to share their own role model story as inspiration to others and bring forward kids with the potential and purpose to make us grownups feel small. To join the movement, go to hm.com/ kids and nominate a remarkable role model. Later this year, the brand will spotlight their efforts and
create awareness for how the broader community can join in their work. The company’s goal is to not only showcase the impact these kids are making, but also help support their causes using the proceeds from a new line of more sustainable clothing inspired by young role models, which is being developed by the H&M Kids design team. “This is more than just identifying some great kids, it’s putting the power of our global infrastructure behind something we truly believe in,” says Pascal Brun.

LEVEL UP YOUR RAMADAN WITH MUJI Set a beautiful table, eat mindfully and stay healthy with this Ramadan By bazaar staff
Ramadan and Eid are special occasions, as their true essence is about generosity, community, and finding a sense of innerpeace, all of which is celebrated through food. You could even say that in the Arab world, our language of love is the making, sharing and indulging in decadent dishes and lavish spreads. Even though this is the second year in a row that we celebrate while social distancing we’re still finding ways to bring the spirit of Ramadan into our homes and filling them with happiness and gratitude. We’ve turned to MUJI to make the experience more enjoyable, organized and aesthetically pleasing. Set the table for Iftar Going all out when we’re entertaining guests is expected and natural, however you should also make the same effort for yourself and your immediate family members. The ritual of setting the table gets everyone in a more festive spirit. We love mixing and matching the glass and white porcelain dishware collections from MUJI. Because they’re neutral we can easily jazz up the table by adding colorful placemats, napkins or different colored flower centerpieces. Suhour It can be harder to keep the momentum going until suhour time, especially if you need to be up early in a couple of hours for work. Our best hack is to prep before going to bed the night before. We fill up our different sizes of MUJI's Sealing Up Preservation Containers with cheese, hummus, chopped up salad and fruit for easy storage and access in the wee hours of the morning. And they are super easy to put away when we’re done. Give Chopsticks a go One of our biggest Ramadan vices is forgetting that we can stop eating the delicious food once we’re full. We’ve found a smart hack that helps us eat slowly, switching to chopsticks. Most of us are familiar with the utensil when we order sushi or Chinese. But who says you can’t use them to enjoy a kibbeh or a sambosa? If you’re not used to them, you are forced to slow down. It often turns into a family challenge seeing who can do it better. MUJI stocks a selection in different wood finishes and colors.
116
Leftovers We’ve stopped stuffing our leftovers mindlessly in the fridge. Instead we freeze them so we can enjoy them later and surprise ourselves with effortless meals in the future. The PP collection in MUJI offers different shapes and sizes. The Mug with Lid is perfect for soups while the Lunch Box with a Screw Lid can hold just about everything else. All the food groups It is easy to go straight for the delicious dessert or ignore the broccoli when there’s a qatayef sitting next to it. One of the easiest ways to make sure you’re getting all the important nutrients is to properly fill your plate. The Porcelain Beige Square Plate with Partitions from MUJI helps you get halfway there. Load up on the essentials like protein, veggies and slow carbs before you start hitting reaching for the sugary treats. Stay Hydrated, but make it stylish Drinking water can be a challenge especially during these summery Ramadans. Fill up the Carafe with chilled water and infuse it with your favorite flavors like mint, lemon or cucumbers. It makes us feel like we’re fancy adults who know what they’re doing so we’re more likely to drink the water. Hint: your table will look better on Instagram, you’re welcome. Drink the tea, don’t spill it We try our best to avoid gossiping in Ramadan, but we can’t avoid tea. The Heat Proof Glass Pot comes in two sizes, but we prefer the larger one because we can steep multiple cups. The Low Hanging Fruit We all know that we’re more likely to eat an apple, if one is sitting in front of us on the coffee table while we watch our favorite Ramadramas. We like filling an Acacia Deeper Plate or bowl with fresh fruits so we snack on them after Iftar for some extra vitamins and fiber.

MAY MUSIC
When a hard rock band takes it down a notch to sing about love and heartache, the result is a timeless and emotional power ballad bombarding radio stations and filling our playlists. The 1980s were the most fertile years of power ballads, but songs like Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” take over karaoke rooms even 30 years after the golden age of power ballads.
Title: More Than Words Format: LP Release date: March 21, 1991
BAND: EXTREME
Title: Open Arms Format: LP Release date: January 1989
BAND: JOURNEY
BAND: GUNS N’ ROSES
“More Than Words” is a song by rock band Extreme. It is the fifth track and third single from their 1990 album Pornograffitti. It is a ballad built around acoustic guitar work by Nuno Bettencourt and the vocals of Gary Cherone. The song is a detour from the funk metal style that permeates the band’s records. As such, it has often been described as “a blessing and a curse” due to its overwhelming success and recognition worldwide, but the band ultimately embraced it and plays it at every show.
Co-written by band members Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain, the song is a power ballad whose lyrics attempt to renew a drifting relationship. It is one of the band’s most recognizable radio hits and a timeless ballad. Journey’s recording of “Open Arms” has been described as one of the greatest love songs ever written; VH1 named the song as the greatest power ballad of all time. Mike DeGagne of AllMusic described it as “one of rock’s most beautiful ballads”, which “gleams with an honesty and feel only Steve Perry could muster.”
Unlike the rest of our familiar favorites by Guns N’ Roses, “November Rain” experiments with strings and orchestra, which is not their traditional style of production. It was said to have been 20 minutes long before being cut to the famous eight minutes and 57 seconds we know all too well. Axl Rose pushed through the uncertainty of his bandmates to release the ballad, but it was all worth it.
BAND: AEROSMITH
BAND: GREEN DAY
Title: November Rain Format: LP Release date: 1991
BAND: PARAMORE
Title: Dream On Format: LP Release date: 1973
Title: Wake Me Up When September Ends Format: Single Release date: 2004
Title: The Only Exception Format: Single Release date: February 17, 2010
This passionate power ballad was the song that saved Aerosmith from being dropped from their label when their career was on the line. Despite being scrutinized by critics and their record label, they released “Dream On” and the rest was history. The era where straight rock n roll was the only sound that reached the radios was shifted when the piano and guitar strums of “Dream On” became a popular radio request. Steven Tyler writes, “Sing it with me” and we did exactly that.
A shift from the power ballads we know and love all too well that mope about love and romance. The lead singer of Green Day sings about his father, who died of cancer on September 1st, 1982. It’s been said that it’s based off what Armstrong told his mother after his father’s funeral. He had locked himself in his room and when his mother knocked on the door, he replied, “Wake me up when September ends”. This emotional roller coaster of a song is the perfect medium of storytelling.
“The Only Exception”, feels less like a power ballad and more of a powerless ballad. Paramore strays from their familiar alternative sound as the track is stripped down to an acoustic number with soulful vocals from Hayley Williams. It’s a vulnerable, soft ballad where Williams writes about her fear of love after past experiences, until she finally lets her guard down for someone she describes as “the only exception”.

THE FERRARI
APPROVED CERTIFICATION Maximum Security and Peace of Mind By bazaar staff
At the Ferrari headquarters in Maranello, Italy and across the world at the authorized dealerships, a heritage of excellence is maintained through the Ferrari Approved Certification. This application of the highest possible standards allows the Prancing Horse team to deliver the best possible customer experience for Ferrari owners.
120
The Approved pre-owned certification program reflects the marque’s unrivalled standards through an intricate inspection process that guarantees the ultimate satisfaction for the program’s customers. Pristine Ferrari vehicles that were once completely out of reach to many have become that little bit more accessible. But before these pre-owned vehicles are made available to the public, they have to undergo a rigorous process comprising a series of wideranging checks and numerous guarantees that have been approved by the parent company. To ensure that any pre-owned Ferrari is operating at standards comparable to a brandnew vehicle, the local Ferrari dealership starts by implementing a detailed technical inspection of each and every car. This is carried out by a team of highly skilled Ferrari technicians who have undergone extensive training at Maranello in Northern Italy, the home of Ferrari. One of their very first tasks is to verify the origin and maintenance history of these vehicles to ensure they have been properly taken care of and have no major accidents in their service history. These technicians painstakingly prepare both the exterior and interior of each car to ensure that every aspect of the vehicle is in top condition, a fastidious process which enables them to provide a guarantee for the cars of up to 24 months. If you are wondering how thorough these inspections are, all in all a total of 190 individual checks are carried out before a used Ferrari may be bestowed with an Approved “license”. This detailed examination includes a mechanical operation test as well as a test on the operation of the electrical system. Liquid levels are also carefully examined, as are the state of the suspension, brakes, cooling system and steering system. These are but a handful of the primary checks implemented on all vehicles. On top of these, secondary checks are carried out on air conditioning, the dashboard and all safety systems. Operation of lights, wheels and tires (including tread depth and pressure) are yet more examples of the car’s functional capabilities that are carefully inspected. All of this takes place in compliance with Ferrari standards of safety, performance and reliability. Once these checks have been completed, seasoned testers put the car through its paces to ensure it is functioning at 100 percent. Thanks to these detailed inspections, all those who purchase a pre-owned vehicle from an authorized Ferrari dealership will receive a written analysis of all the tests performed. The transparent nature of the history of Ferrari Approved models ensures every item of information is verified, and anyone purchasing a Ferrari Approved car will enjoy the benefits of a Ferrari warranty as well, which covers the parts and labor for major repairs.
Another benefit of a Ferrari Approved car is that it has an unlimited mileage warranty, except for parts subject to routine maintenance such as brake pads and disks, tires and other normal wear and tear. With such a comprehensive certification program being applied, the Ferrari Approved pre-owned initiative guarantees the quality of all vehicles being sold as well as the support
required to ensure a positive experience for all owners.

Since its launch in Japan in 1966, the Corolla series has achieved a cumulative total of over 48 million sales in more than 150 countries and regions around the world. The model has continued to evolve in line with the needs of
124
the times; this latest version caters to the strong demand for SUVs in the region, enabling customers to select the vehicle that best suits their diverse lifestyles. “As we know, the automotive industry is witnessing a profound transformation. During the past few years Toyota has been making significant progress in the fields of Connected, Autonomous, Shared and Electrification. With the launch of all new Corolla Cross, World’s best-selling and favorite vehicle since 1966 – Corolla is evolving,” Scott McNicol explained. The all-new Corolla Cross has been designed as a new type of SUV that combines a tough urban-
style exterior with a comfortable and convenient interior to exceed customer expectations. The TNGA platform (GA-C) has enabled the Corolla Cross to achieve high-quality performance, a comfortable ride, and outstanding quietness. In addition to its exceptional comfort, the Corolla Cross provides a spacious cabin, effortless entry and exit, class-leading luggage space suitable for all scenarios, and tried and tested safety equipment inherited from the Corolla series. “We started our Hybrid journey with the Prius in 2016. We tested this car then tested it again to make sure the technology was suitable for our customers in Kuwait. We then grew the range
by adding a RAV4 Hybrid then a Camry Hybrid followed by a Corolla sedan Hybrid. Last year we introduced the all-new Highlander SUV and the C-HR crossover” added Bader Faisal Al Sayer. Daizo Kameyama, Chief Engineer in charge of development, commented on the unveiling of the new model: “Now that the Corolla Cross has newly joined the Corolla family, we sincerely hope that our customers will warmly welcome the vehicle to become part of their families; just like their partners, siblings or even friends. We wish that the Corolla Cross could assist customers in creating a new story by loading on their vehicle the people who are important to them, their luggage, and their dreams for the future.” Kei Fujita, Chief Representative, Middle East and Central Asia Representative O ffice, Toyota Motor Corporation, commented: “We are very happy to bring the all-new Corolla Cross to our customers in the Middle East, which offers a spacious and comfortable ride that turns both daily commutes or weekend leisure journeys into a fun driving experience. As a versatile and stylish crossover vehicle, this latest addition to our HEV range will help to further increase the appeal of eco-friendly vehicles in the region and contribute to our long-term goals for the promotion of sustainable mobility. I would like to thank all of our customers around the world for taking the Toyota Corolla to their hearts and continuously inspiring us on our journey to make ever-better cars.” The all-new Corolla Cross immediately captures the attention with its blend of SUV toughness and urban refinement. The vehicle’s bold yet sophisticated style and unmistakable presence are guaranteed to turn heads. Its elevated height and wide stance are emphasized by a front grille that gets wider towards the bottom, producing a sense of strength and stability. Another striking
feature is the LED headlamps, which incorporate a curtain-effect – a first for Toyota. The design of the fender and front bumper create a fun-to-drive impression, while the powerful wheel arches house newly developed 17” alloy wheels that add to the vehicle’s dynamic appearance. The aerodynamic cabin sits on top of the wide, muscular rear fenders and is sleek and stylish, while also offering a sense of spacious utility. The 2021 Corolla Cross’s distinctive look and feel is completed by its comfortable interior, which displays exceptional quality and finishing throughout. The cabin is accentuated with an extensive range of features such as an automatic air conditioning system with Smart-flow (S-FLOW) control, which achieves greater comfort and enhanced fuel efficiency by providing air
conditioning to occupied seats only. Passengers also benefit from AC vents for the rear seat, a one-touch moonroof, a 7-inch color MultiInformation Display (MID) in the cluster gauge, 8-inch multimedia display integrated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six-speaker audio system, 60:40 split-folding rear seats, and smart entry and start systems. The vehicle’s thrilling drive personality is brought to life by a new electrified hybrid system that combines two power sources. Its 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle petrol engine produces 97 hp and a peak torque of 142 Nm, working in tandem with two electric motors that generate 71 hp and 163 Nm of torque, with a combined power of 121 hp. The system is mated to an Electrically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT) that contributes to an outstanding fuel consumption value of 23.7km/L.

Drivers can also choose between ECO, Power, and Normal driving modes to suit their driving styles. In addition, a separately-switchable EV Mode can be combined with any of these three driving modes, for a silent and emission-free driving at low speeds and for short distances. The all-new model offers exceptional cabin quietness and smooth acceleration, especially when accelerating from a stand-still. The vehicle can be driven entirely on electrical p ower with zero-fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions, or by combining the power generated from the petrol engine and two electric motors, depending on its speed and driver behavior. T he hybridelectric batteries are continuously charged by the petrol engine or when decelerating and braking, eliminating the need to plug in a power cord. The HEV features a host of advanced technologies, yet drives like any conventional vehicle and d oes not require special fuel. The all-new Corolla Cross draws on Toyota’s strong heritage of advanced hybrid-electric technology. Electrification of vehicles has been a cornerstone of the company’s business since 1997. Since then, Toyota has successfully launched a variety of HEVs, leading the way to a steady growth in the adoption of its environmentally friendly vehicles and pushing cumulative sales to over 16 million. Combined, this enormous sales record represents a reduction of around 139 million tons of CO2 compared to the sales of equivalent conventional vehicles and underscores the tremendous support of Toyota’s customers for this eco-friendly approach.

THE FANTASY WORLD OBSESSION The 25-year legacy of creating amazing memories is now stronger than ever By bazaar staff
Childhood obsessions are very real. I remember propping up my monthly calendar against the wall over my desk, and eagerly crossing off the weekdays until it was Friday, and my parents would agree to take me to Fantasy World’s iconic Al-Rai branch to pick up my newest addition to my sprawling Polly Pocket collection. And mind you, those trips were very well-earned. They meant I’d done my chores, finished my homework, and cleaned up the mess I usually hid beneath my bed. I remember Fantasy World’s castle-like facade so vividly, it ignited such a feeling of joy that lives on in my heart to this very day.
Fantasy World Al Rai's original facade Fast forward to today, and there I was, perusing the same aisles looking for openended play toys for my little toddler at Fantasy World Al-Rai. The facade is now much sleeker and more futuristic, with a resplendent array of outdoor play arrangements and the coolest trampolines adorning the outside area, and my favorite DC heroes greeting me as I walked through the doors. I was gobsmacked by how
134
time flew, 23 years to be exact, but that joyful feeling still rang very true in my heart. I knew I’d find everything I was looking for, and so much more, at Fantasy World Kuwait. That’s the beauty of the wonderland that is Fantasy World in Kuwait. It is ever so rare to find a local brand that pays such close attention to their customers’ desires and needs. What began with a single, iconic store steadily grew
across Kuwait with time, creating a 25-year legacy of selling toys that is still going strong. They wanted to ignite the same feeling of glee which we all experienced as children for generations to come, and they did just that, opening locations at various shopping outlets to get even closer to their customers, and adding more quality toy brands to their vast offerings. In this digital age, the online shopping
Fantasy World Al-Rai's present facade experience for Fantasy World lovers is just as delightful, as the brand offers a seamless e-commerce platform, as well as a robust iOS and Android App that will have your LEGO obsession fulfilled utilizing their home delivery service. Planning a last minute party (albeit a mini one, adhering to health regulations)? Is your little boy showing off his cleaned up room and is urgently begging for that latest Hot Wheels set as his well-deserved reward? Then Fantasy World’s Express Delivery offering will see your order delivered within two hours! You can even pick up your selected items instore after you’ve ordered them online, or opt for the Curb side pick-up option where you don’t even need to step foot outside your car. Fantasy World might have grown its number of locations, but their virtual presence brings them even closer to our hearts and minds, ensuring that you draw a smile on your loved ones’ faces, no matter the circumstances. From the trendiest toy fads (Yes, I am so very obsessed with those Fidget Bubble Poppers), to getting our outdoor spaces ready for another scorching summer in Kuwait, and every toy fantasy in between, it is very important to highlight that Fantasy World keeps your and your little ones’ safety as their highest priority. This means, no cheap knock-offs, and no shortcuts through unknown suppliers when procuring those prized toys and novelties from top-notch brands that will create a lasting imprint in your
mind. All of this while still offering the most competitive prices in the market when it comes to purchasing branded toys and gifts. It goes without saying that the counterfeit toy market is a massive issue. While it appears enticing from a cost-perspective, the manufacturing process of toys is meant to follow strict international guidelines to avoid choking hazards and harmful chemical components to children. For instance, consider the color of those cheap LEGO knock-offs, are they safe for your little one? The plush exterior
of soft toys, which young babies will almost immediately place in their mouths, is it even safe? What type of plastic are they using? Counterfeit toys generally do not follow worldrecognized safety standards, even going so far as to print the identical safety labels seen on official brands on their packaging. Don’t even get me started on counterfeit electronic toys, where we’ve seen cases of overcharged batteries exploding, or sparks which have led to fires. Now, imagine going through your entire life never having to worry about any of this when

at Fantasy World, as you can rest assured that you are purchasing toys of the highest quality from trusted suppliers. Fantasy World is a family-first brand, which is why so many people choose them when it comes to creating meaningful play experiences for all members of the family to enjoy. They’ve steered clear of offering gaming consoles like PSP and Xbox from an ethical standpoint as they believe that these games are not conducive to productive play, and instead, choose to offer toys that create positive experiences for the little ones and adults too. This doesn’t mean that they don’t offer the latest and greatest, as you can still find the most cutting-edge toys to satisfy every whim from the awe-striking LEGO collection, the latest from V-tech, Hasbro, Fisher-Price, Hot Wheels, Play-doh, Crayola, Mattel, and so much more. Even as I write these words, I find myself going back and forth between pages on the Fantasy World website, trying not to get sidetracked into buying more stationary from their novelties division at Rocket World (exploring 136

this tab on their site, and visiting their stores is a must!). But alas, I’ve added a pack of smiley sticky notes to my cart, and I’m already back in the toddler section picking out more toys for my little one.

#XCITEDFORSUMMER Get ready for the hottest months of the year By bazaar staff
Ice cream, pool parties and water balloon fights are just some of the things that scream summer in our minds. We spent our childhoods counting down the days until school would be out, so we could be released into the wild, sweet and sticky embrace of summer. As adults, we might complain about the heat, but we’re still just as excited as our younger selves. The longer days give us more time to enjoy them fully. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite gadgets and tools from X-cite that can make this summer super sizzling!
Frigidaire Juicer Extractor with Blender
Electrolux Air Purifier
With the temps soaring this month like every summer, we’ve found the perfect way to combat it. Fresh juice! We’ve been turning lemons into icecold refreshing lemonade with this juicer and blender combo. The highend food grade stainless steel blades help chop, pulverize and liquify everything that goes into it. The blades come with 2 speed controls and the 400W powerful motor that ensures you get the most out of each fruit. You can add a ton of nutrients and fiber to your diet by adding breakfast smoothies and “nice” cream to your daily intake.
While air conditioning is a blessing we are grateful for, the quality of recycled air as well as external pollutants leaves us constantly battling with allergies. Enter the Electrolux Air Purifier, which automatically adapts to changes in your environment to provide you with the cleanest air possible. AirSurround reaches all corners of the room and covers all parts of the room, keeping air circulating naturally. You can fully control it using a phone app, so you can make sure the air is fresh before you even get home. Our favorite thing about it though is that it looks like sleek and chic decor and not a clunky appliance.
EQ Wireless Water-Proof Speaker (E9)
Mipow Playbulb Pool Light
The secret to turning a normal day at the beach or by the pool, or balcony for that matter to a full-on party is music. Enter the EQ Wireless Waterproof speakers. Since they’re waterproof and have a soft rugged exterior you can take them anywhere and won’t worry about water, dents, cracks or scratches. And the strap makes them super portable and easy to carry around everywhere. They also support AUX, SD card and TWS connections, as well as Bluetooth 5.0. And the colorful LED light makes it perfect for parties!
Something else that can totally change your pool game are these solar-powered waterproof lights that have a built-in battery. Let the charge during the day and illuminate your pool all night for a magical ambiance. You are getting a modern green landscape light bulb, that is both energy saving and environmentally friendly. They also come with an extending monopod so you can use them anywhere in your garden too. But our absolute favorite thing is that you can easily control them all using an app to create the lightscapes of your dreams.

THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN FOR THE NEW FERRARI LIMITED-EDITION V12 DOUBLE The first official images of Ferrari’s latest limited-edition special series have been published in the buildup to its world premiere, which will be broadcast live on the Maranello marque’s social media channels on May 5 at 14:30 CEST. The new model is the ultimate expression of Ferrari’s concept of an extreme front-engined berlinetta, honing the characteristics of the critically-acclaimed 812 Superfast to a level never seen before. The result is a car that encapsulates and epitomises the company’s 70-plus years of experience on the world’s circuits, drawing on its thoroughbred sports car DNA to deliver a perfect marriage of performance, form, and function. Aimed at Ferrari’s most passionate collectors and connoisseurs, it features numerous uncompromising engineering solutions to guarantee peerless driving pleasure. One of the most striking aspects of this new model is how in-depth aerodynamic research has altered the car’s lines. Working in close synergy with the Ferrari Styling Centre, the aerodynamicists have adopted solutions that are extreme in form featuring profiles that are unprecedented for a road-legal car. The aerodynamic redesign of the whole car was aimed at maximising downforce levels: from the new front air intakes, rear diffuser and exhaust configuration to the patented design of the rear screen – which now hosts vortex generators – every modification is a faithful expression of Ferrari’s core belief that form must always follow function. From a design point of view, this new special series has a strong personality all of its own that differentiates it significantly from the 812 Superfast on which it is based: this was achieved by choosing styling themes that further enhance the architectural design and dynamism of the 812 Superfast, pushing its sporty vocation to new extremes. SCORPIO OCT 23 – NOV 22 Scorpios swim in turbulent waters now as the lunar eclipse stirs up your Sun on May 26. Important life issues come to a head with tensions at their peak. What issues manifested at the last lunar eclipse ? They reappear, especially if they were ignored in the fall. Hopefully, you will not be too difficult or destructively dramatic. Face what comes with honesty and compassion. Soften rather than harden. Be willing to forgive and be forgiven. Simplify rather than complicate.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21
TAURUS APR 20 – MAY 20
This is the time to lighten your psychological load, to synthesize and summarize your understanding of your deep and essential needs. Glimpses of your future are possible from your own inner guidance. Get your horoscope done now by a competent professional. Chances are a consultation will be extremely helpful and affirming. If you are part of a spiritual lineage or want to be, this is the time to ask teachers, mentors and guides for spiritual initiations, or to be taught mystical techniques.
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 19
You approach one of the most profound times of the year . May 2021 is a powerful and intense time representing a “portal” through which you can now pass. Feelings flood to the surface. Bless the old. Embrace the new. Get out of a bad situation by using your will to make it happen. Use the intensity of the time to engage in spiritual practices such as shamanic processes, therapy, sweat lodges, vision quests, etc.
Capricorns love order and the feeling of relief when everything is in its place. All Capricorns, but especially those born the first week of January, benefit now by bringing order and renewed strength to your life. Unburden your load by springcleaning. Sort four piles: keepers, possible keepers, useful giveaways, and garbage. Make space externally to allow for new space internally. Then watch the new come into your life.
GEMINI MAY 21 – JUN 21
AQUARIUS JAN 20 – FEB 18
You are on an intellectual roll as Venus in Gemini perks up your mind, bringing a new sense of intellectual excitement. Gathering new data and information sets the stage for a breakthrough now. You are able to think fresh solutions to old problems. Don’t waste this time being rigid or conditioned to old mindsets. Try pure spontaneity as you start in one direction and end up somewhere completely different. Leave time for new experiences that revitalize your life.
Aquarius Be careful to not bet on the wrong horse in May. Avoid any new “too good to be true” pitches at this time, especially if anyone seems “shady.” Avoid committing your time and energy to a floundering ship, for example, a company that cannot be rescued. Be skeptical of prospective employers casting you as “just who they need” or flattering you to accept the offer. Avoid unnecessary strain on your body as you are more easily drained now, especially those born the first week of February.
CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22 The garden metaphor is an accurate portrayal of your life now. You can touch again what is essential. This is especially so near the lunar eclipse on May 26. It is time to give more structural shape to your garden (or life), weed out and plant. Work to give your life more definition. Get rid of stuff you no longer need. Establish new ways of doing things. Spend time in nature. Walk in the woods.
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 22 You may come into contact with those who want to take advantage of you, seduce or sweet-talk you into something that is not good for you. Circumstances become nebulous, confusing, or you receive mixed messages. Be aware of shady characters or situations that feel weird. Avoid drug use as your good judgment suffers and can lead you into an unpleasant situation. Keep your Leo bravado under control as you can make a bad impression now.
VIRGO AUG 23 – SEP 22
PISCES FEB 19 – MAR 19 is one time period to use caution with important decisions, especially mid month. You are more vulnerable and gullible so you can be suckered, sweet-talked or taken advantage of now. Beware the hard luck story or someone appealing to your compassion. Be as truthful as you can. Stay away from co-dependent or untrustworthy others. Take time to get to know anyone you meet for the first time this month. Trust your intuition if you feel a warning sign. Use your discrimination.
ARIES MAR 20 – APR 19 Confusing, even disconcerting situations in which you have felt trapped may suddenly change. The monthly Cosmos influence helps you break out of nebulous situations and get your life going forward again. If you need freedom, this aspect should give it to you. Be ready to act should an unexpected opportunity open. It will likely demand a quick assessment and decision, as the opportunity may not be there for long. Don’t, however, take foolish risks just because there is opportunity.
Resist getting drawn into your own mental garbage. This advice is especially so for those born the first week of September. You are prone to get sucked into your chronic worry scenarios, feel overwhelmed with far too many details and react abruptly or critically. It doesn’t all have to get done today. Slow down and breathe. Take one step at a time. Take care of business methodically, focus on the one task at hand and let the future take care of itself.
LIBRA SEP 23 – OCT 22 What goes around, comes around is an apt description of your love life now. From May 18 through June 29 is the perfect time to more clearly understand your current love life by taking time to review your past love history. Or, past actions come home to roost. Old love issues and patterns surface once again. Look to your past love life to help you understand relationships now. Reevaluate current significant relationships.
