Int We see you. Really, we do. Stumbling around disoriented, trying your best to get back into work mode, trying to get up early to beat the horrific traffic, trying to figure out when the next holiday is, suddenly realizing that BOTH Eids are over, and that you’ve basically got nothing to look forward to until Christmas and New Years, if that. Oh well, join the club, and instead of feeling sorry for yourself and wondering why the hell you don’t work in London or New York or Dubai, look at the bright side. No, that’s the sun. Don’t look at the sun. Instead look forward to all the good things on the way: less dust storms, better weather, new shows and concerts at JACC, new restaurants to try out, and so much more.
The bazaar team...
Because we know that getting back to the daily grind can be difficult, our September issue will surely set you on the right path! Start your reading with our inspiring features with incredibly talented individuals like local self-made photographer and videographer Abdulaziz AlSorayia in Up Close and Personal and the bubbly radio personality Sandi Ismail in Truth or Dare. We also sit down with local community guru and foodie extraordinaire chef Maryam Alnusif (affectionately known as Chef Mimi) and talk about all things ramen when it came to opening up her first culinary adventure at Tampopo Ramen Shop. Yes guys, you can finally try Japanese ramen with a twist at this cute little eatery located in Salmiya. Flip over to our bazaar Goes Dining feature to read about our full experience, and remember that you’ll get to see even more good stuff when you visit our website www.bazaar.town.

The French luxury brand unveils its latest supercar at The Quail in California. The limited run of 40 cars is completely sold out but you can take a look here at the bi-color car designed for ripping up those corners.
Finally Maryam Alnusif opens her first restaurant! Dedicated to Ramen dishes and located in Salmiya you can savor the authentic taste of Japanese inspired cuisine freshly prepared daily by the hands of Mimi herself. Come for the ramen, stay for the dessert in this cozy, compact eatery.
Zo the fun-loving robot from planet Zeta takes bazaar on a tour of all the fun rides, games and experiences you can enjoy in Tekzone, The Avenues. Virtual Reality abounds in this digitally enhanced world where you collect crystals to claim prizes.
It is easy making assumptions about public personalities. And while local radio host Sandi Ismail stays pretty true to who she is, we found out there was a lot more to her after daring her to tell the truth.

H&M STUDIO
Mario Sorrenti wows us with a visual representation of friendships, family and general togetherness. A stunning and endearing campaign that includes a huge cast of protagonists. The 2018 Autumn/ Winter collection is rich, cozy, and chic all rolled into one.
Red Bull’s off-road motocross champion Mohamed Jaffar is getting ready for the Dakar Rally. But how does one prepare for a mentally and physically demanding race? It definitely takes more than courage, and Jaffar tells us how he is getting ready.
For one Abdulaziz AlSorayia, the journey toward making a career out of his love for photography and the creative arts was riddled with challenges. However, in this special feature, we uncover how patience, perseverance and passion can make the impossible come true.
For the H&M Studio Autumn/Winter 2018 collection, a dreamy aesthetic emerges with neo-noir inspired pieces that will leave you spoiled for choice. With this stylized collection, feel free to mix and match various pieces for an urban, modern feel.

MEET SANDI ISMAIL
Get to know the voice on your local radio waves By bazaar staff
For instant company, turn on the radio. The certainty of knowing there will always be an upbeat, friendly person coming through the airwaves is reassuring. Those of us who listen to RKFM 99.7 think of Sandi Ismail as a friend. And for the record, Sandi is her real name. It is unique, interesting and a conversation starter, just like the woman herself. But, there's more to Sandi than her radio persona. While Sandi wanted a career in academia, a friend invited her to give radio presenting a shot. Not only did she do great, but the station manager also offered her a job on the spot. She was behind the microphone the next day. After graduating from Kuwait University with a degree in English Literature and a couple of years on the radio, she decided to give corporate life a shot. Still, leaving the sound-proof studio for a cubicle did not work for Sandi. In 2017, she was back on the radio where she knew she belonged all along. And her fans love her too. With over 13 thousand followers on Instagram, Sandi is putting her influence to good use. It is her platform for advocating for the causes she feels strongly about through the 'stories' feature. Opening up about her own battle with anxiety, she wants to make it more acceptable to talk about mental health. It is a reminder that seeking professional help is always an option and that none of us need to suffer alone. In doing so, Sandi is definitely creating a digital safe-space. Sandi is vocal about her support of women’s empowerment and being more environmentally conscious. She has been slowly reducing her consumption of single-use plastics and taking us all along the journey. But it is not just serious stuff, Sandi also posts about food, her cats and yoga too. Practicing yoga helped her find peace despite her anxiety. It taught her how to check her worries at the door and focus on her body, breathing and motion. A skill she needs at work, too. All of Sandi's personal thoughts and feelings are left at the studio door, so she can do her job with the utmost focus. When young people ask Sandi for advice on getting a job in radio, she always tells them to “just be themselves”. Because that is exactly what she has done. What you see is what you get with Sandi. She has found her voice on the radio and is not afraid to use it. 22
TRUTH OR DARE QUESTIONNAIRE
How would your mother describe you in one word? Vivacious. How would you describe your mother in one word? Life. What is the most ridiculous question you’ve ever been asked? Do you really need another pair of shoes? What is the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done? Road trip to Bahrain. It was my first ever time visiting Bahrain, and popping into the car on a Friday morning with my husband for a day trip felt like the best thing to do - and it was! What is your theme song? I don‘t have a theme song - it just feels so permanent. My current favorite song, however, is “Nothing to Me” by Tamara Qaddoumi. What word in the English or Arabic language do you wish you had invented? Watermelon in Arabic: (bateekh). Where would you like to live? What is your dream retirement location? The Portuguese countryside. It’s so incredibly picturesque. What is the first famous quote that comes to your mind? Well behaved women seldom make history. What animal best describes the kind of partner you’d be interested in? A wolf. They’re very intelligent, loyal, and protective. Plus, wolves are all around extraordinary animals. What do you miss about your childhood? Not having to pay bills! Seriously speaking, what I miss the most is the simplicity of it all; when playing outside was the highlight of my day.
If you could change your name, what would you change it to? What’s not to love about Sandi? I’d never change it! How would you describe your handshake in one word? One word? How about three: I’m a hugger! What is the toughest part of your character? Positively, I’m resilient. Negatively, I’m stubborn. Who is your favorite historical figure? Lotfia Elnadi. In 1933, she became the first woman in Egypt (and in Africa and the Arab world), to obtain a pilot’s license. To me, Elnadi is a symbol of determination and persistence. When she finally obtained her aviation license (after being met by a lot of resistance from her family), she not only became a pioneer in the field, but was also the second woman after Amelia Earhart to ever fly solo. What in the world do you least desire? Indecisiveness. For myself, and for others. What do you think is lacking in the world, which if there was more of would make the world a better place? Giving more importance to the voice of the youth, and to involve them in sociopolitical matters. Why do you think most girls/guys like you? I’m very inviting as a person, so I suppose people like how approachable I am. Finish this sentence: “Happiness is a thing called…” Pizza.

THE ROAD TO DAKAR
Introducing Red Bull athlete Mohammed Jaffar
By bazaar staff
There is something deeply exhilarating about the thought of going off-road, onto a motorbike and blazing off against the harsh desert. Few of us will get to experience it, but not Red Bull athlete Mohammed Jaffar. “My love for motorbikes runs deep, it's in my blood.” he started us off. Jaffar fell in love with motocross at only fourteen years of age. He started riding competitively when he turned nineteen Mohammed, winning thirteen motocross championship titles. Now, he has shifted his focus to achieving his lifelong dream of participating and competing in the International Dakar Rally. The Dakar Rally is an off-road endurance race held annually by the Amaury Sport Organization. Initially and since the race’s inception in 1978, held from Paris, France to Dakar, Senegal, the race has been moved to South America since 2009, due to security threats that forced the organization to cancel the race in 2008. The route that competitors face, the majority of which are amateurs, is significantly more challenging than those faced in conventional races. A large portion of the rally section consists of off-road, crossdunes, mud, camel grass, and rocks, among other challenging hurdles. Having conquered the motocross field, Mohammed Jaffar now aims to compete in this ambitious race. “I continuously top the podium in competitions. My greatest achievements include winning a round of the Emirates Desert Championship, finishing in the top ten in my first international rally race at the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, as well as my thirteen motocross championship titles. Now I am shifting focus, working to participate in the Dakar Rally 2019.” For the 2019 event, the Dakar Rally will take place solely in Peru, for the first time in history. The tenstage race starts and ends in the country’s capital, Lima. In comparison, the 2018 event consisted of three stops; with a starting point in Peru, a rest day in Bolivia, and wrapping up the race in Argentina. Adding to the uniqueness of the 2019 race, 70% of the race stages will be on sand and dunes, as opposed to previous years, which consisted of a much smaller percentage. This is expected to challenge participants, as well as attract the top drivers in this discipline. Preparing for the race won’t be an easy feat but Mohammed Jaffar is ready to face the brutal challenge. Jaffar told us exactly what is needed to succeed. “A competitor’s fitness capabilities are put to the test. That is why I am including endurance training 24
in my regiment plan to successfully participate in and complete the race. I am also getting to know the ins and outs of the race because navigation is integral to success. A small mistake in navigation can significantly prolong the time you spend on the course. It is also important that the competitors have an adequate mechanical background. This way if they face an issue during the race, they will be able to fix it and continue. Finally, and most importantly, a competitor should have mental strength and determination. It is an exhausting and frustrating race and perseverance plays a large role.” He added that he will train in Kuwait and abroad, “I was in Spain this summer to improve my navigational skills on the rally bike. In addition, I will spend one month in the United Arab Emirates this month to practice desert riding. Finally, I will also participate in
the Moroccan rally in October.” Naturally, facing the challenge requires inspiration and motivation. Jaffar attributes a portion of what motivates him to his friend and fellow Red Bull athlete, Mohammed Balooshi. He also gains inspiration from Sam Sunderland, Dakar riding winner in 2017. He said, “I have watched every step of his journey very closely as he is a friend and a member of the motocross committee in Dubai. I've seen how much hard work he has put in and that makes me feel that I, too, can achieve my dream.” With that note in mind, we wish Mohammed the best of luck on this monumental challenge! Follow Mohammed Jaffar’on Instagram @mo_jaffar. For more excitement follow Red Bull on Instagram @redbullkuwait and visit www.redbull.com.

RUNKUWAIT TURNS 8!
Put your running shoes on, it’s time to hit the road for a charitable cause
By bazaar staff
Mark the date for the fun run that raises funds for children with special needs. RunKuwait is a charity run that we have become familiar with over the years, however it is a run that continually needs our support. RunKuwait is back this year and offers the perfect opportunity for you, your family and friends to join a fun run or walk and in turn, support children with special needs. The nouveau or amateur runner can participate in the 5KM distance and the more serious, professional athlete can opt for the 10KM run which will kick off from The Scientific Center on November 10th. At the end of the day, however, it doesn’t matter if you run, or walk—as long as you get your body moving for a cause. Last year, one of our very own bazaarites broke her personal record and ran the 5KM in just over half an hour! As for the rest of us? Well, we made a morning out of it and did the 5KM walk. You never know, we might beat our personal best records this year and all end up running the 10KM. Here at bazaar, we love us a challenge and once we’ve put our competitive hats on—that's it! More than 2,300 participants from all walks of life showed up for last year’s run. Starting nearby Pearl Marzouq in Salmiya, it was such an amazing sight to witness all the participants get ready for the race. At the end of the day, not only did they race, but they also greatly contributed towards the treatment of children with special needs at the Children’s Evaluation & Rehabilitation Center (CERC), founded by Fawzia Sultan Healthcare Network (FSHN). Last year’s successful event raised awareness about CERC as well as the different medical services offered to the children. More importantly, it raised funds for the actual treatment of the children. The previous run recorded a total of 795 fully funded treatment sessions for children with special needs. RunKuwait have set an even higher bar for themselves this year. They hope to offer more treatment sessions at CERC for vulnerable children with special needs. They have total faith in the individual supporters and generous sponsors in the community that have always been, and continue to be, instrumental in getting to the finish line. On your marks! Get Set! GO! Mark your calendars for Saturday, November the 10th. Register now at runkuwait.org. Participants that register before the 10th of October 2018 will be entitled to the early bird discount. RunKuwait also welcomes both large and small sponsors and donors who would like to give back to their community. For more information, visit @RunKuwait on Instagram and Facebook or call 2572 0338. 26

ABDULAZIZ ALSORAYIA
THE JOURNEY BEHIND THE LENS By bazaar staff
What makes for impactful visual engagement online? Possessing strong visual communication skills like photography, videography, and editorial vision are surely, a plus. Kuwait boasts a flourishing photography scene, and we could even say that there is a surplus of fantastically talented local photographers, as their work speaks for itself. However, it’s what you do with your skills and talents that sets you apart from the rest. For one Abdulaziz AlSorayia, this premise cannot be more true. 28
A quick browse through his Instagram account yields an impressive visual showcase of striking client work with the best telecoms in town, vibrant tech companies, lifestyle brands, local coffee and food concepts and even international clients. His visuals are expertly mapped out, and his Instastory and IGTV features present daily tips and tricks in photography and videography. Moreover, Abdulaziz currently heads up the creative department at the Ministry of Youth, and in his spare time offers regular workshops to his peers. And while everything looks so picture-perfect, the journey behind Abdulaziz’s rise has been quite rife with challenges that honed his skills along the way to lead him to where he is today. “And I’m still learning,” he chuckles, gesturing to his latest reading material on the coffee table. “I don’t just read about photography, I read about everything. It opens up your mind in the most amazing ways.”
Back in 2009 and while Abdulaziz was studying mechanical engineering, all he wanted was to buy a camera—a decision his family firmly opposed, thinking it might distract him from an already challenging field of study. Abdulaziz never loved mechanical engineering, and even one of his university professors took note of this lack of desire and advised him to switch fields. “I was faced with a tough choice,” he recounts, “I was struggling to get by with my studies, I wanted to please my family, but I saved money to buy my first camera. I took pictures of anything and everything. I didn’t have a clear direction, I wasn’t professionally trained. I never imagined that I could ever make a career out of this camera. The entire time, I was worried about university.” It’s 2011 and Abdulaziz was already three years into one degree where he wasn’t doing well at all, with one to go, and he was faced with the decision to
leave. He couldn’t quit university, he just needed a degree. Being naturally politically inclined, he switched majors to complete his studies in political science with a minor in media. During that time, Twitter and Facebook were prevalent, especially with the rise of the Arab Spring. This was when Aziz took his passion to Twitter. Armed with a new camera lens that he purchased from his cousin, he set about taking candid shots at university, especially during election seasons. He says, “I edited my own photos, and shared them on Twitter with simple mentions with friends and various people I captured. Three weeks later, my timeline was flooded with replies and retweets.” People began asking him to take pictures for money, “and this was something I honestly had no clue about. I didn’t know how to handle clients, but I knew that I already had strong communication skills.” Not only was Abdulaziz practicing his passion, he was also studying a specialty that he actually deeply enjoyed. He continues, “I was able to do both. How things fall into place always amazes me.” After graduating with honors, Abdulaziz had already developed a budding client list. By then, he had gained early market experience on the ground level working with agencies and freelance clients alike, and entered several photography competitions. When he won the Viva Passion Photography award (an astounding AUDI R8 was the prize), he actually helped his family by funding their dream of completing the build on their home. He says, “I knew it was meant to happen, and I was so pleased to help. This drove me to better understand why I chose photography as a field.” He went from one environment which he was willing to stick out, to one that helped hone his personality and taught him critical problem solving skills that he still employs to this day. “I don’t like ever telling a client no,” Abdulaziz says, “I don’t like refusing any phone call, whatever the circumstance. I will do my best to solve the situation, and even if I couldn’t do the job myself, I’d recommend other photographers if need be.” With the rise of social media in Kuwait, an already highly lucrative demographic that was set to embrace these platforms to change the very way we do business today, many others took note of Abdulaziz’s work with clients like Zain, and various restaurants and cafes in Kuwait. When Abdulaziz’s cousin, Abdulrazzaq AlSorayia, moved back from the States after completing his studies, he told him that it was his journey that inspired him to buy a camera and take up videography. From there, a natural partnership was born. And with Instagram’s gradual addition of 15-second videos, people, specifically clients, began taking more note of their collaborative work. They completed photography, video projects and coverage work for clients like Zain, and they were also a standout at one particular Nuqat conference. They worked effortlessly, capturing photo and video footage and sharing it to audiences. Did they have all the equipment that they needed? “Not even. We [Continued...]
29
were happy to rent out expensive equipment that added to our costs if need be,” He explains, “We just cared about the quality of the work that we did. And aligning ourselves with clients like Zain, for instance, is a once in a lifetime opportunity.” At Nuqat, they were producing and editing videos on the spot, and in doing so they created a brilliant, and ultimately new dynamic experience for attendees. One that was noticed by Sheikha Al Zain Al Sabah from Kuwait’ Ministry of Youth. She requested a meeting with Abdulaziz, and a casual conversation about media ended up with her requesting him to handle the ministry’s social media department to drive content creation. To this day, Abdulaziz still spearheads the creative department at the ministry, where he exercises all of his experiences at this post. “I work with an incredible department, it’s more of a creative incubator that is alive with talented graphic designers, photographers and visual creatives” he says, “Sheikha Al Zain is always keen on new talent, and she empowers employees to grow as people.” Abdulaziz and Abdulrazzaq still worked on their own personal projects, and they have gone on to collaborate with some of the greatest creative minds in the country and region. He considers his collaboration on Zain’s latest campaign for the National and Liberation Day holidays as one of the most important projects he had worked on yet. “We were finally considered as DOPs (directors of photography), and i was the Secondary Director of Photography” he adds, “working with amazing people like Abdulaziz Al Jasmi from this campaign and Dr. Ziad Al Hussaini in the past emboldened us and gave us the confidence to do more and to promote our work. I personally consider working with these greats and many others as an education, in and of itself. I couldn’t ask for a better experience.” From banking (NBK and Boubyan Bank, amongst many others) and telecom clients (Zain, Viva) to niche local concepts, Abdulaziz and Abdulrazzaq keep on delivering fantastic work, with notable campaigns with Try Carriage (April Fool’s Day campaign) and CAF Café, the latter arriving as one of Abdulaziz’s favorite client case studies. He says, “With CAF, I found the perfect challenge in branding, content creation and visual mapping. When I take on any account, I need to begin from scratch when it comes to content creation. I work with the client to set up the identity and to create content that fulfills this vision.” Not only is CAF successful, it has also been franchised to Riyadh with more expansion plans in the pipeline.

HEALING ACT WITH FATMAH AL QADFAN Kuwait's First Drama Therapist
By Shabana H. Shaikh
Up until a few years ago, a career in psychotherapy in Kuwait was severely discouraged. Very little was known and rarely spoken about mental health and disorders, while the whole subject was largely taboo. It is still a work-inprogress, but thanks to youngsters like Fatmah Al Qadfan, who have dared to break free from convention, promising changes are taking place. AUK alumna, Fatmah has become the first and only registered drama therapist not only in Kuwait but also the GCC, bringing a popular form of creative expression and healing to the region. This interview has been in the making for over a year. I first met Fatmah in 2016, when she had just returned to Kuwait, after completing her internship and looking for a job. We met again earlier this year, and the soft spoken, empathetic, and amazingly calm Fatmah, patiently described the nuances of her chosen profession, of which I admittedly knew nothing. Right from the beginning it was abundantly clear that Fatmah is passionate about her work. Her eyes sparkled when she spoke about what she does–which is so vast, it was hard to sum up in this article. So, what is drama therapy? The North America Drama Therapy Association (NADTA), the governing body which establishes guidelines for Registered Drama Therapist (RDT) credential and accreditation for MA level programs and sets guidelines in the USA and Canada, cites ‘the foundation of drama therapy lies in drama, theater, psychology, psychotherapy, anthropology, play and interactive and creative processes’. Fatmah describes it as ‘a marriage of psychology and theatre’. “As opposed to psychotherapy, wherein a patient is usually seated and talks about their problem, drama therapy involves movements, playing games, drawing, sculpting or a combination of all as means of expressing inner turmoil,” she explained. Owing to the absence of a licensing board in Kuwait (a subject that needs to be addressed), Fatmah is presently a registered therapist with the North America Drama Therapy Association (NADTA). Although she studied Anthropology at AUK as an undergrad, it isn’t surprising that she ended up in the field of psychotherapy. As a child, Fatmah was in love with the theatre and claims ‘she was happiest when in one’. “In school, I started taking drama classes,” Fatmah reminisces, but soon discovered that she was stage shy. Undeterred, she moved onto lighting design before transitioning into directing, unaware 32

at the time that all of it was subtly nudging her towards her future calling. While at AUK, she studied anthropology during the day, and at night directed plays. After completing her undergrad studies, Fatmah admits doing ‘some responsible jobs like an adult’, flashing me her lovely smile. But her heart was always in theatre, and so she decided to pursue her masters in drama therapy. Fortunately, Fatmah had distanced herself from the idea that she had to study ‘what is in demand’ or what Kuwait needed. She reveals, “I got a full scholarship from Kansas State University and for the next three years, I studied, interned, had a job on campus, and directed plays. If you believe in something, you’ll make it work anywhere.” It’s strange how life has a way of working out itself. It was by chance that Fatmah happened to watch a documentary, 12 Angry Lebanese, written and directed by Zeina Daccache, a Lebanese drama therapist. For the first time, the award-winning documentary made Fatmah realize that she may have found her calling. “It was drama therapy in prison, and it struck me as the profession I was meant to do, but never knew it,” Fatmah says, while admitting how, until then, she had no clue what drama therapy was, but ‘connected’ with it instantaneously. As I write this interview, I realize that today the young woman is neither shy nor uncertain. She later invited me to observe one of her group-workshops with The Proteges, enabling me to witness drama therapy—and her—in action. Seated in a circle, bonfire-style, Fatmah held her audience captivated with her composed voice, and calculated direction. No two sessions or workshops are the same; and each varied and designed to address the specific needs of the client. “Sometimes, I follow a plan; sometimes, I have to improvise to ensure my clients remain engaged,” she explains. “People are good at avoiding words to express, or even if we do, we filter them, which doesn’t always address the problem with clarity,” she answers in response to my question on how it was different from general therapy. She further elaborates on the technique, “Through creative means—arts, drama, music, role play—people surprisingly express more honestly how they feel or see things. So, it’s a much more powerful way to deal with issues, than if I ask them to simply talk about it.” Drama therapy has proven effective in the treatment of autism, eating disorders, and a wide spectrum of developmental disorders in children, adolescents as well as adults. Fatmah is confident that drama therapy will do particularly well in Kuwait, adding: “We [Arab people] like expressing, we are an expressive society.” Drama therapy can also benefit corporations that want to address underlying stress, and boost productivity. She points out the importance of play in our lives even as we grow older: “We learn through play, just like teaching a child, but at some point, we think we are too old to play games as adults.” In 34

her opinion, the best way to heal or move forward in life is by playing games! Now, who wouldn’t love to do that, right? Naturally, like most challenging professions, hers can be emotionally draining, too. Fatmah ensures us that she takes care of herself by acknowledging that ‘she can’t help everyone… and taking on only as much as she can handle’. Travelling effectively de-stresses her. And if it includes a body of water, you have a healing elixir. “Water sooths me,” laughs Fatmah, “Being by the ocean or even taking a shower rejuvenates me completely.” Although many aspects of her field interest her, Fatmah is keen on working with people suffering from complex trauma. Unlike PTSD, which usually is the outcome of a traumatic incident or experience, complex trauma traces back to adverse childhood experiences—a result of neglect, family violence or abuse.
In her spare time, Fatmah volunteers with the Proteges, conducting workshops on communication and personal development skills, and travels to both relax and expand her education. She has volunteered internationally as well as locally at Bayt Abdullah, Friends Who Care and worked with Nuqat. As we wrapped up our interview, I asked her why she came back, when she loved working in the USA, to which she replied, “A big part of me wanted to bring the profession to Kuwait. I want to see more drama therapists here, at home.”
Fatmah Al Qadfan is a therapist with FSHN and can be reached for consultation via their website: www.fsrikuwait.org. For more information, visit dramatherapykuwait.com.

INTERVIEW WITH OLIVIA MUNN
On her role as Casey Bracket in The Predator and much more! By bazaar staff
The Predator sees writer/director Shane Black returning to a world he first experienced back in 1987 as an actor. In this new film, he’s expanding and exploring the story of the alien hunters and the human beings that must face the threat. With the government attempting to cover up the extent of Predator incursions on Earth, a rag-tag group of military veterans must figure out what is going on and how to save the world – or at least themselves – as the battle spreads from the depths of outer space to once-safe suburbia. Olivia Munn is a talented actress who began working in television and has successfully segued into cinematic work. She’s known for movies including X-Men: Apocalypse, Magic Mike, and Office Christmas Party. In The Predator, she’s scientist Casey Bracket, dragged into an adventure she might not be quite ready for, but will bring all of her skills to help with. Munn talks getting the part, her own history with the Predator movies and the sheer number of spines being ripped out in the film… Who is Casey Bracket in the movie? She’s an evolutionary scientist and biologist. In this movie, we have two storylines that merge into one. We've got Trevante Rhodes, Boyd Holbrook and Thomas Jane and that group of guys – the soldiers, and their interactions with the Predator. And on the other side, my character has been brought in by the CIA because of her expertise in evolutionary biology to get a better understanding of what they have found. She’s only called if there is a higher life that's found, and here there is definitely some alien activity. She definitely doesn’t come across as a damsel in distress… When you're fighting for your life, you have to shoot, even though nobody wants to be in a position where they have to fight for their life. The guys – they're soldiers – but I approached this character as a scientist. I'm sure that she's picked up a gun before… I grew up in a military family so I knew how to shoot guns. Making this movie was not about us finding moments for her to not be a damsel in distress. It just wasn’t on the page; it’s not what we were doing. Was there much training or preparation for the role? She's not a trained athlete or assassin, but I think she's healthy and physical. We did a lot of gun training and that was really fun. And I loved being able to do that with the guys, learning how to shoot together; every time we did that, I learned all these different techniques and tools and skills. But then I tried to incorporate what my character would do and put a little bit of shakiness into it. In this movie, there's something really big going on 36
and for her, it's fascinating. This is something that she's waited her entire life for – especially as an evolutionary scientist, somebody who studies how creatures evolve and change. And yet this is happening right before her eyes, so, there is a shock and awe value that's happening. While everyone else is running away from the Predator, she's running towards the aliens, because she’s fascinated. Does working on real sets and location help your performance? It's very intimidating and visceral. And it really puts you in that space. But that being said, there's still so much stuff that is put in during post with CG and the VFX and everything that really amps it up for the audiences at home. We get enough that we can allow our performances to be even more real. A movie like this really takes advantage of how great technology is and where we've come from, and what we can do with it and how realistic things are. Especially when it comes to, like, the blood and guts and the destruction and death. Shane has said it won’t shy away from the violence… I’m really big on it. I think we've gotten so PC that we lose the fun of going to the movies sometimes. For me, the more bloody spines being ripped out, the better!
What is your relationship with the original Predator? How old were you when you first saw it and how cool is it to now be in a Predator movie? I actually hadn’t seen it! I didn't see it until a few months before shooting. I mean, I knew of it and maybe I knew some of the catchphrases and lines, but no, I never saw it until I signed up for this movie. What's really great about this movie is that while it’s technically a sequel, it's not picking up right where the other movies left off. But at the same time, it's acknowledging all the previous ones and it's not pretending like they didn't happen. And it's interesting because we have some throwbacks from the very first Predator which I love that Shane was able to incorporate. I really enjoy that. But for me, it wasn't imperative to have watched that film before I signed on because I knew it would be its own beast. After getting it, I did watch it. And loved it. And I kept saying to Shane, “Can we not have a scene where someone has to hide in the mud? Can I go hide in the mud?” Because that's a genius way to not be discovered by aliens! RAMEN, RAMEN OR RAMEN?
Maryam Al Nusif’s latest culinary adventure Tampopo Ramen Shop is now open!
By bazaar staff
There surely has not been a brick-andmortar venue more highly anticipated in Kuwait than that of any gastronomic adventure emanating from the creative and highly skilled mind of chef Maryam “Mimi” Alnusif. While you may know her from “Shakshooka” the community-oriented market held monthly during the cooler seasons, simply venture only yards away from one of Mimi’s other community projects “The Secret Garden” where you will find Tampopo Ramen Shop. A project that Mimi has been working on for at least the last four years, which is how long it took just to find the right unit for the restaurant. “Tampopo” coincidentally, translates as the flower “dandelion” in English or “hindbeh” in Arabic, so it seems perfectly predestined that Mimi’s opportunity to establish her first restaurant would arrive at this location, around the corner from the community garden. Tampopo is also the title of the 1985 Juzo Itami directed “ramen Western” about the search for the ultimate ramen noodle. If you look closely the DVD is on display on the corner shelf alongside cookbooks and food journals. On the menu at Tampopo you can find four dishes of ramen: Organic Chicken Shio, Duck Miso, 38
Vegan Miso Shiitake and the latest addition of Beef Tantanmen. All (but the vegan) made from a Dashi, chicken and duck broth. Mimi is hardly a proponent of veganism so it’s curious to see this available. When asked why there is one she smiles broadly, opens her arms out magnanimously and says, “Everyone deserves good food.” Such a good job has been done on this dish that many non-vegans order it. “You have to try harder when you don’t have all the ingredients” confirms Mimi. Surprisingly popular has been the Miso, unusual for Kuwaitis, as they can find the bird “fishy” so this is a triple success for Mimi: the Miso sells, teaches people to like duck, and it is the only recipe that she can say is entirely her own creation. Mimi also mentions that she utilizes French techniques when it comes to the now-popular Miso, and in this case, expect the perfect duck confit swimming in a delectable broth. We chose to have the Miso extra spicy with a marinated egg, and the Tantanmen ramen. The latter is super creamy and rich from the use of sesame paste. We added Szechuan oil to the Tantanmen to give it additional warmth and wow, you will want this during winter! Spicy! We think we may have just found the perfect Ramen right here but you will have to be quick to catch the Miso; “The duck is running out in Kuwait,” laughs Mimi, “I’ve used it all.”
“I’ve always been drawn to Asia” she says when asked about why she chose Japanese food and basing her first restaurant on the cuisine. “People think I just went to Japan and thought ‘ramen’ and opened up Tampopo but that’s not the case.” Back in the 1980’s kids in Kuwait grew up on animation dubbed into Arabic such as “Captain Majed” and “Kabamaru”, “… and the characters were always eating noodles and onigiri!” exclaims Mimi. That planted the seed of the idea for a Japanese restaurant, it just took decades to deliver Tampopo in the right way. Having fallen in love with just how good Japanese food is, Mimi liked the idea of concentrating on only a few dishes and doing them to a supremely high standard. Ramen lends itself well to this exceptionally focused culinary exploration. It is a fairly modest dish one would think. But in reality ramen represents hours and hours of preparation; making the broth, marinating the eggs, chopping the add-ons, soaking the mushrooms, preparing the proteins and making the ramen noodles of course. We interviewed Mimi for 90 mins and she was concentrating on mushrooms and dashi alone for all that time! Authentic Japanese food can be an acquired taste, especially for the Kuwaiti palate so it is interesting to learn more about Tampopo’s diners. Of course there are the supporters of Mimi, a huge group because

of all the community work she’s done. Also the Cool Kuwaitis, well-travelled and well-read, or people who are open to trying new things. But there are those who already know the cuisine and love it including a large section of the Asian community from the Philippines to Japan with His Excellency the Japanese Ambassador himself giving Tampopo the thumbs up. The wonderful thing is that Tampopo customers are bringing their children too, broadening young minds into being more open to different tastes, flavors and textures. And more customers keep coming with queues still a normal occurrence at Tampopo. Mimi has built a large kitchen so the customer areas are on the cozy side. Consequently Tampopo really is all about the food and the customers appreciate and embrace that. “Sometimes it is so crowded that customers are passing to each other their food from the counter, I love that” says Mimi. “It used to fit 15 but now it fits 20 because people were taking chairs from outside and bringing them in.” It’s like a small community of its own when you eat at Tampopo and the restaurant is busy, which it always is if you come in the early evening. You get to meet the other customers in the queue, then you squeeze in and find your seats (we sat by the window so we could torture those in the queue), chat together as you wait for your ramen, and then you experience the first taste together. We actually ran into a friend of bazaar’s and ended up dining together! And we totally loved his verdict: “How worth [is the wait for] Tampopo Ramen shop? 30 minutes of waiting in line, in the scorching heat while being bombarded by blistering winds - that's how worth it! A weird crossroads of 90s nostalgia meets a Hayao Miazaki movie. Good food and good vibes.” There is a Tampopo queue hack: Mimi says it gets quieter after 8.30 pm so you can get served in a calmer environment then. Of course you can always try booking in for the reservation-only tasting-menu events which happen on Sundays only. After huge bowls of ramen comes dessert, and you may be surprised to see French crème brûlée on the menu alongside the more fragrantly refreshing and typically Japanese offering of Yuzu ice cream. “Japan is obsessed by all things French” explains Mimi, “and I have a French Cordon Bleu background. I even cook the duck I use confit -style.” Just like the dish of ramen itself which looks simple and rustic but is actually multi-layered and complex, Tampopo Ramen Shop is the amalgamation of a number of things. Hard work, passion, travel, training, luck, community, determination, family, intuition and Mimi’s sheer stubbornness to open up a specialized concept that she completely believes in.
Tampopo Ramen Shop is located in Salmiya, Block 9. The walk-in opening hours are 6pm-10pm, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Follow @tampopo. ramenshop on Instagram and Facebook and Direct Message for details on Sunday menu tastings or email tam.popo.kw@gmail.com. 39
10 PIONEERS OF PERSONAL BRANDING Find your own Nike ‘swoosh’!
By David Lidsky
1. Hector Boiardi- 1929 Boiardi (boy-ar-dee), a Cleveland chef, sold takehome meal kits of his dishes due to customer demand. During World War II, he canned his pasta meals for servicemen, popularizing Italian food. The impact: That's Boiardi's face in the Chef Boyardee logo, making him godfather to celebrity chefs like Wolfgang Puck and Rachael Ray. 2. Andy Warhol- 1962 The painter turned Campbell's Soup into art and brand-ified celebrities with silk-screen portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and others. The impact: Warhol's 1968 observation that "in the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes" has become the rallying cry for aspiring social media influencers and reality-TV stars. 3. Muhammad Ali- 1966 The outspoken heavyweight boxing champion conscientiously objected to being drafted to fight in Vietnam—at great personal cost. The impact: Ali helped turn public sentiment against the war. Today's star athletes, from LeBron James to Colin Kaepernick, risk their broad appeal to speak out about racial injustice. 4. Betty Ford- 1974 Shortly after becoming First Lady, Ford was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a 40
mastectomy. She bravely shared her story, removing the stigma around the disease and treatment. The impact: Ford's candor helped save countless women's lives. She would go on to do the same for alcoholism after she admitted her addiction. 5. Martha Stewart- 1980 The stockbroker turned caterer published her first cookbook, and its success led to dozens more, a magazine, TV shows, and housewares that still gross hundreds of millions in revenue. The impact: Stewart's embrace of multimedia paved the way for every lifestyle doyenne since, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Brit Morin. 6. Richard Branson- 1985 Branson, who owned a record label, attempted the fastest nautical crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, the first of many stunts that made him famous. The impact: His swashbuckling style doubled as good marketing for his Virgin brand. Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk mimic Branson's playbook, including following him into space exploration. 7. Oprah Winfrey- 1986 Winfrey's mix of charisma and vulnerability as a national daytime-TV host inspired viewers to buy anything she endorsed. The impact: Winfrey's advisers—including Drs.
Phil and Oz—became personal brands in their own right. Her hard-core fans now hope she'll use her pulpit to run for president in 2020. 8. Tom Peters- 1997 The business author and consultant posited in Fast Company that employees needed to think of themselves as brands, "creating their own microequivalent of the Nike swoosh." The impact: Spend a few minutes among thought leaders on LinkedIn to see how white-collar workers have embraced Peters's vision. 9. Beyoncé- 2013 The pop superstar reaped the power she'd accrued in her career to break the old model for album releases, dropping Beyoncé on iTunes at midnight with only an Instagram post publicizing it. The impact: Beyoncé set sales records and a new standard for how stars launch new work, inspiring Drake and Taylor Swift to follow suit. 10. Kylie Jenner- 2018 In February, the reality-TV star and cosmetics entrepreneur tweeted that she no longer opened Snapchat, adding, "ugh this is so sad." The impact: The tweet catalyzed concerns about Snap, and its stock lost $1.3 billion in value, reinforcing that personal brands can be even more powerful than the platforms that build them.

DISCONNECTING, RESTARTING, THEN CONNECTING AGAIN On the power of long vacations
By George Tarabay
No, this is not in reference to what you hear when you call Tech support. It is rather a metaphor for taking long vacations. As a seasoned professional vacation seeker, I can guarantee you that nothing is more yummy and good for us humans (and other species, as I shall demonstrate below) than taking a long vacation. The vacation should be so long, that when you return, people prompt you with comments like “wow, it’s been a while” or even “Dude, what are those silly braids in your hair”. If you don’t hear those two sentences or any variation of them, then your vacation wasn’t long enough. You see, when you travel something happens aside from the airline making money off of you. You carry a big part of you to the world and in exchange, the world gives you a part of theirs that fills the missing pieces in you. It is not by a stroke of luck that humans share this behavior with the animal kingdom. In his infinite wisdom, God almighty instilled in us the same behavior, the same exchange and the benefits that happen with animals moving across the planet. Let’s consider birds as an example: They migrate to more moderately tempered areas when it gets too hot or too cold, they help the ecosystem in the land they visit and in exchange, they get the nutrition necessary to return to their land of origin to grow the ecosystem there. Sounds familiar? No! Not only does this sound similar, it is also exactly the same thing when it comes to us homo sapiens. Traveling, in my mind, is as essential as anything else. As an avid reader (not flexing, but it’s true), I have found that experiencing others in their element for a mere hour, can have the benefit of reading a dozen books. Culture is a melting pot, and the ingredients, in my book (I read this one too) are: Experiences, Preferences, Belief, Tradition and Hosting. When you adventure into a new land, you are immersed into that culture, and yours becomes a way for you to interpret the culture you are experiencing. In turn, this experience becomes a benchmark for you to drop the notions you were questioning, and adopting ideas that you deem are more “you”. On your return back home, you can dispel that information to doubtful others, which in return helps the population grow beyond its geographical borders. While the length of a vacation that any 42
given person may consider to be “long” is very subjective, we can all agree that the moment you start feeling satisfied, content and ready to go back to your routine is the moment in time when your vacation is considered to be long enough. We often forget that we are citizens of the world first, then our countries second. And in that perspective we should learn how to be very versatile. We should want to coexist with others in their element, locale and culture, while preserving our own identity. With an exchange so inclusive as this, everyone benefits Traveling helps us achieve that. While all of us may understand the “restart and connect again” concept of recharging one’s mental batteries, I personally found out recently that I was one of so many that got the “disconnect” part all wrong. Disconnecting should not be about forgetting about everything. On the contrary, disconnecting should be more about forgetting how you would look at everything around you, and using a different perspective to assess one’s life. When we’re outside our element, we drop the negativity that is built in to it, and we
are able to assess our choices, career, projects in a totally new light. That, to me, is the real disconnection act. Otherwise, if we truly forget what we are dealing with, and pin it to be dealt with upon return, then you risk of experiencing a massive downer which will ultimately make the vacation experience a hideous one towards its inevitable end, as it reminds you of what awaits back home. Should you still be in doubt, let me explain it with a real example: I figured out this entire methodology of thinking, and subsequently this article, as I am at this moment sitting on a beach in Turkey, looking around me and trying to come up with a way not to feel awful when I return to my home in beautiful Kuwait. If that isn’t problem solving by disconnecting, then I don’t know what is!

BEAN HERE, BEAN THERE, BEAN EVERYWHERE Avoid burn out today with these helpful tips! By Dr Susannah Joy Schuilenberg
Recently, as part of a group of colleagues spending the day in a professional development workshop, we were required to play a ‘game.’ The facilitator gave each 3 beans. Essentially, the beans represented “medicine” and in the circle of attendees, we were required to stand in front of each person, starting on the right, and look them in the eye, and say, “I have medicine for you,” and give over a bean. Or, “I have no medicine for you,” and pass them by. This turned out to be much more difficult than one might imagine. There were twelve of us in the group, and we had three…yes, three… beans. It took me a millisecond to decide, ‘I don’t like this game.’ I looked at the beans in my hand, and the other eleven people in the circle, and didn’t want to play anymore. Inevitably, I was going to have to say, “I have no medicine for you,” at least 8 times. Ugh. We played the game, and it was as emotionally devastating as I expected it to be. Of the 12 participants, only one person thought to keep ‘medicine’ – one of those beans - for herself, and admitted to feeling very selfish in doing so. The point of the exercise was to illustrate to all of us that we have limited resources, and when we give those resources to others and fail to reserve any for ourselves, we experience the stress of depleted resilience, and eventually we burn out. Burn out brings its own set of problems, including physical illness, emotional distress, and mental health issues like depression and anxiety. How to know when you’re giving away all your beans? •Taking lunch at your desk…every day. •Starting early, or working late more days than you don’t. •Time is a tyrant – you have chronic feeling of ‘never enough time’. •Sleep isn’t great – you can’t get to sleep, or you wake up at 0 Dark 30 and that’s it. No more sleeping. •Worrying about Sunday, feeling sick on Saturday night. •Regularly working on the weekend. •You haven’t played in the past week. We all need time off. There is no such thing as “work/life balance.” It’s ALL life, and the balance we want is work/leisure/play. Work is, well work. Whatever we do that pays the bills. Leisure is not work – it’s doing the laundry, grocery shopping, and anything else we have to do to be able to go to work clean, clothed, and in our right minds. Play is anything we do that rejuvenates our soul, lifts our spirits, and leaves us with a pleasant sense of wellbeing. If this sounds completely foreign to you, I’m not surprised. We don’t do enough playing, and a great deal of us do none. 44
Why is self-care so difficult? What is it about our society, our experiences, and our personal rules that make it so difficult to acknowledge that caring for ourselves is an absolute necessity, not an option? Try this. Make a list… •5 things you would do if nobody could stop you (including yourself). •5 things you enjoyed as a child (5 -12 years old). •5 things you on your Bucket List (What?? You don’t have a Bucket List??) What’s the theme? What are you missing in your life now that comes out in your subconscious? If your theme is ‘running away’ it’s probably a clue that you need to change something. So back to the beans. We truly do have a finite amount of resources, and if we expend all those beans on others, no matter how well intentioned we may be, we will burn out. ZITAAT: ORDERING FOOD HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER Making life better one screen-tap at a time By bazaar staff
“There is an app (or a dozen) for that!” is probably the most cliché phrase right now. We are always on the lookout for the next new app that will be our magic genie and fix our reallife problems. And we have very little loyalty or tolerance towards dysfunctional, slow or clunky software. And when it comes to food delivery, the app itself needs to be responsive, easy to use and offer more than everyone else. That is even before we start considering the selection of restaurants and other services that we are looking for. Let’s face it, pleasing “hangry” customers is not easy. Zitaat, a relatively new player in the food delivery app arena, has already carved a space for itself among the older players. Let’s get real, it is not really about ordering food. We’ve been able to do that since restaurants started installing phone lines at their premises. We can all pick up the phone, dial and deal with a customer service rep or receptionist to get our favorite bespoke pizza, weird choices for toppings included. But this is why I love Zitaat. I don’t need to 46
trawl through a long list of mediocre restaurants. The offerings feel curated, local and relevant. Craving biryani, nigiri or both, you will find it. And you will only find the good stuff. Getting from hungry to full is easy too. There used to be a time when software developers counted the clicks it took to perform a single task and kept it to a minimum. Most developers have stopped caring, but Zitaat have kept it oldschool and it takes fewer taps to order. All you have to do next is sit back and obsessively track it until it gets to your door. The dynamic tracking is impressive! I love feeling like an undercover secret agent secretly following an important asset being delivered to me. They also offer the only point-based rewards program in Kuwait. For every KD you spend you collect points. The points quickly add up to money that you can use toward your next meal. After you are done making an order, redeem your loyalty credit at checkout. No convoluted steps to dissuade you from using your points. But if I were being really honest here, I shouldn’t be ordering pizza and burgers at 11 pm like there’s no tomorrow. I like pretending to be a grown-up so I try to stick to the healthier options. And there is no shortage of options on Zitaat. For
example, seafood from the Fish Store is my goto. I skip the rice and order grilled fish. It is the perfect protein; light, healthy and very filling. I also love that don’t have to switch apps to find what you need. The Supermarket section is your new best friend. Fresh produce from Sadeer Farms and some steaks from Meat Chops and you have yourself a home-cooked meal that is healthy, light and enjoyable. The only downside is having to wash the dishes. Although, I sometimes cheat and just order some frozen goodies from Adams Foods. I still put it in the oven, so it totally counts, right? But my favorite feature of Zitaat is the Catering option. You can order in advance for your next party. Just pick a date and time in the future, order and forget about it. One less thing to handle on the day of the big event and more adult points scored. And if you need to throw something together last minute? You still can, most restaurants will cater on the same day too. If you haven’t tried the app yet, what are you waiting for? You can download Zitaat on the Apple or the Google App stores. Follow Zitaat on Instagram @zitaatofficial to keep up with all the cool new restaurants that are being added. THE DIVO WORLD PREMIERE
Bugatti unveils its latest model in California at the exclusive event "The Quail – A Motorsports Gathering" By bazaar staff
Bugatti chose the ultimate showcase in automotive design, engineering and camaraderie amongst motoring aficionados for the world premiere of the Bugatti Divo. The French luxury brand has developed a super sports car tuned for agility, nimbleness and optimum handling performance on winding roads. 48
The super car is named after Albert Divo, the French racing driver who won the famous Targa Florio race on a mountainous circuit in Sicily for Bugatti twice in the late 1920s. Based on the requirements for such a race, the Bugatti Divo is light and nimble and boasts enormous downforce and g-forces. The result is outstanding handling properties and the dynamic character of the car is underlined by a new, strong design language. “Happiness is not around the corner. It is the corner. The Divo is made for corners,” says Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. The Divo is powered by Bugatti’s iconic eight-liter W16 engine with a power output of 1,500 PS. The aerodynamics of the model have been intensively fine-tuned and the suspension and chassis settings have been modified. As a result, the Divo is 35 kilograms lighter and has 456 Kilograms of downforce, 90 kilograms more than the standard Chiron. The lateral acceleration of the Divo has been boosted to 1.6 g. Its maximum speed is 380 km/h. The Divo can lap the Nardò handling circuit in southern Italy eight seconds faster than the Chiron; the Divo is the Chiron but for cornering. Upon the start of presentations to selected customers, the strictly limited series of only 40 with a net unit price of €5 million (1.77m KWD), sold out immediately. “When I took up my position at Bugatti at the beginning of the year, I soon learnt that our customers and fans were waiting for a special vehicle which would tell a further story for the brand in addition to the Chiron,” said Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. “The Bugatti team was also very eager to implement a project like this.” It was therefore decided to build a super sports car with a different character from the Chiron which would still be immediately recognizable as a Bugatti. “The feedback from our customers is overwhelming,” the Bugatti President reports. “We showed the Divo to a small group of selected Chiron customers. All 40 cars were sold immediately – fantastic confirmation for the Bugatti team which put so much dedication and passion into the project.” The aerodynamic properties of the Divo were improved by a considerable amount of detailed work. The front cover is equipped with air intakes which reduce the effective crosssectional area of the vehicle. The newly-designed, wide front spoiler provides higher downforce and guides more air to the front air inlets. The brakes are cooled by four independent air sources on each side of the vehicle. This means that the brakes do not overheat and the tire temperature is always kept in the optimum range. In addition, the wheel arches are ventilated via slats on the wings. The roof of the Divo has been designed to form a NACA air duct. The rear end of the Divo features a new, height-adjustable, wider rear spoiler which improves efficiency and results in higher air brake performance as well as significantly more downforce. The downforce is also boosted by the rear diffuser which has been entirely redesigned for greater efficiency and accommodates four tailpipes. “Our task was to develop a vehicle which would look different from the Chiron but still be immediately recognizable as a Bugatti,” says Achim Anscheidt, Director of Design of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S., “This meant that the three key style elements of Bugatti had to remain in place: the horseshoe-shaped front grille, the typical Bugatti signature line along the sides of the vehicle and the characteristic fin that defines the longitudinal axis of the car when viewed from above.” The outer skin of the Divo was designed in an
[Continued...]
49
uncompromising way to emphasize lateral acceleration. The main objective was to achieve optimum aerodynamic and thermodynamic efficiency. At the same time, the Divo represents a new styling approach which the design team has developed especially for a coach built Bugatti and which is distinguished from the modern core products of the brand. The slimmer side line of the Divo helps make the vehicle look lower and longer. The new proportions allow a visual horizontal division of the body, which is reinforced by a special color scheme. The top, more elegant section is painted with a matt finish in a silver color “Titanium Liquid Silver” developed especially for the Divo. The lower part of the sides has more of a functional, technical design, reinforcing the car’s forceful appearance and giving it a confident stance on the road. This section features exposed carbon fibre tinted in a petroleum blue shade, “Divo Carbon”, developed especially for this model. An entirely new architecture was developed for the front of the car. A light animation developed especially for the Divo underlines the distinctive signature of the front end. The horizontal split into a lower carbon and an upper matt silver section also makes the Divo look lower and underlines the optical impression of width. One highlight at the rear of the vehicle is definitely the new, highly sophisticated 3-D rear light. Forming the rear light of the Divo are forty-four fins. At the outer edge, the fins become wider, creating a more intensive light. Towards the center of the vehicle, they are narrower, resulting in gradual fading of the light. The result is a striking appearance which means that the Divo is also unmistakable from the rear. The two-tone color scheme also intensifies the forceful impression created by the rear. The technical character of the color scheme and materials used for the exterior is continued in the interior. The color effects of the carbon tint and exterior paintwork are reflected on a 1:1 basis by the dark “Divo Grey” petroleum tone of the Alcantara in the interior, providing a subtle contrast with the glass-blasted anodized grey surfaces of the metal parts. The distinctive “Divo Racing Blue” is also used as an Alcantara leather tone in the interior, where it plays a special role by providing an optical split in the interior surfaces. This color is used almost throughout the driver’s section while it only provides selected accents in the darker passenger’s section. Another stylistic link between interior and exterior is created by the door trims and seat areas, which feature an embroidered three-dimensional rhomboid structure with an algorithmic configuration, reinterpreting the structure of the grille and rear lights. Technical innovations in the interior include the seats, which not only feature a new design but offer greater lateral support. The steering wheel is partly covered with Alcantara leather and has larger paddles fitted firmly on both sides of the wheel. Thanks to larger armrests and calf supports, the central console ensures greater comfort for the drive of your life. 5 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE CHANGING YOUR ROUTINE Are you really up for the challenge? By Anisa Purbasari Horton
In a self-improvement-obsessed world, it’s easy to find a reason to change your routine. Every day, there seems to be new research or book that tells you what time you should get up, what you should eat, and how you should sleep. But a successful routine looks different for everyone. Just because someone else swears by a particular routine and attributes their success to that, it doesn’t mean that you’ll experience the same thing. Before you think about drastically changing your diet, or setting your alarm two hours earlier than you normally wake up, it’s worth asking these questions below. 1. WHAT’S MY END GOAL? When writer Daniel Dowling became a full-time freelance writer, he realized that it was no longer enough to “let his energy levels” dictate how much work he would do. He needed to do it the other way–let his workflow dictate his energy. Dowling made a series of changes, from working out first thing in the morning, stepping away from his desk every 30 to 45 minutes, to eating a breakfast of healthy fats and protein before he started working. Previously, Dowling would start writing first thing on an empty stomach, and find that he wanted to faint by the time he got to the end of his draft. These are all substantive changes, but Dowling had a clear end goal–to keep his brain sharp and alert so he can crank out great copy for long periods of time. If you don’t personally know why you’re making a change, you’re more likely to give up sooner and not stick with the change in the first place. 2. WHAT’S NOT WORKING IN MY CURRENT ROUTINE? Sometimes society arbitrarily tells you what’s “good” without any valid reason. For starters, reading the morning routines of many executives can lead you to think that you need to be an early bird to succeed. Not necessarily. If you find that waking up early makes you tired and cranky, there’s no reason to switch your alarm to 5 a.m. when your 7 a.m. start works just fine. Of course, if your boss has instructed you to get to the office earlier, that’s an entirely different matter. But if they haven’t, then it’s best to stick with what makes you the most productive. 3. WHAT CHANGE IS GOING TO BE THE MOST EFFECTIVE? Even a small change in routine can be difficult to maintain, particularly when that change involves not doing something. Say that your current nighttime
52
routine involves Twitter scrolling and watching Instagram stories–and you’re trying to avoid screens before bedtime. It’s likely that you’ll have more trouble implementing that change rather than deciding to read a physical book before bed instead. As psychology and marketing professor Art Markman previously wrote for Fast Company, “Unfortunately, the brain mechanisms that develop habits cannot learn not to do something.” It’s much easier to introduce a positive action that replaces the habit you are trying to change. 4. HOW COMMITTED AM I TO MAKING THE CHANGE? When you start your habit change, you might be adamant that you won’t let work, travel, and special occasions interfere with your goal. But let’s face it: At some point or another, this is bound to happen. In addition to knowing a clear “why,” it’s also important for you to be honest with how committed you are to making the change, and whether you’re okay with missing out on the opportunity cost. Let’s say that you want to start exercising after you get home from work. Are you willing to trade your Netflix time for an hour at the gym?
5. HOW CAN I MAKE THE CHANGE IN A WAY THAT WORKS FOR ME? Career and executive coach Suzan Bond had the goal of practicing yoga every day. However, an injury intervened with her plans, and she found herself unable to get back to the mat daily, even when she laid out her yoga gear and mat the night before. She decided to start small–a four-minute yoga practice using an app that she could use at home. She let herself practice whenever she had spare time (rather than setting aside a time), and found her motivation by using calendar check marks to show that she had completed her yoga practice for that day. She wrote, “Committing to just four minutes a day helped me tap into the power of tiny habits without trying to overcome my perfectionism, the part of me that just needs to stick with something on a regular (okay, fine–daily) basis.” Bond designed her habit change in a way that suited her personality and goals. When she tried to do so in a way that ignored her perfectionist tendency, she didn’t succeed. Just as it is important to figure out your “why,” when it comes to routine changes, it’s equally important to work out your “how.” Photo by Magda Fou on Unsplash.

YOUR MOST PRECIOUS POSSESSION A rose by any other name should smell as sweet, right? By Ayman Nassar
Riddle me this: What, in essence, belongs to you, but is used by others a lot more than you use it? Once upon a Mortal Kombat comic book, this riddle was the key to unlocking infinite power. The answer, in case you are still stumped, is your name. Granted, for the first few years of life, we do not go by our name (unless we are in trouble, and it is called out in full), it is always a ridiculous pet name beloved to our parents, grandparents, relatives, and friends or all of the above. It is only once we start to understand the power of our names that we really take ownership of them. The first confirmation of our identity is our name on our birth certificate. It is what serves to differentiate us from the numerous other loud, crying, adorably cute babies. When we first learn to grasp a pen, the first thing we write is our name. As we grow slightly older, we begin to doodle it, making characters out of it. Undoubtedly we will go through a phase where we wish to change our names (early on, if it persists, seek professional help) to something we saw on TV (for me personally it was Jason, after Jason Bourne, I was around 4 at the time, and no, not the version played by Matt Damon). Struggles will continue. The order in which your name is written will matter. Which name gets mentioned and which is forgotten will matter. For the entirety of my life (to this very point of writing this 54
article) my name is persistently incorrectly written as Nasser, on all forms of documentation and in pronunciation, despite my arduous indignation. Gradually, our name grows on us. We learn to love it, cherish it, even walk around the house beating our chests and pronouncing it aloud to no one in particular. It is at this point of acceptance that a seismic shift in cosmic powers occurs to throw a proverbial monkey-wrench our way. And depending on which side of the globe you are from, the situation will vary. However the result is the same, as you will have to accept a change your to your name. In the West, the main reasons behind changing your name are if you’re entering witness protection, or if you get married (if you’re a woman). Women may change from their maiden name to either their husbands’, or a hyphenated portmanteau of sorts, or they will keep their maiden name as is (right on, sister). In the East, specifically the Middle East, we believe in equality for all. So if you decide to get married, the woman need not change her name at all, initially. It is only when the stork comes to visit that they bring with them a new identity (witness protection, remember?) along with a bundle of joy for the parents. Henceforth they shall forever be referred to as Bu-(father of…) and Um-(mother of …). It gets tricky, if your first child is a girl, you use her name, if you have a son afterward, you change to his name. If your first child is a boy, you’re all set, that is your new identity.
It was not until I took my child to a nursery and got called Bu-So-&-So by the receptionist that it dawned on me, the little brat is stealing my identity! It was a stark realization with vast writing implications. I had accomplished so much (in my humble opinion) as myself, I suddenly remembered opening my very first bank account and signing my name for the very first time at the age of 11. I remembered how I loved the pointy edges of all the letters of my name and how during my first job I signed my name in full on every journal entry (only to realize how time consuming it was and then I just used my initials) and now, all of a sudden, my crowning achievement that redefines me is my offspring (not the band)? Am I now legally required to declare this to the authorities? Is there some sort of form I am required to fill out, with pictures? Some parents run at this with reckless abandon, voluntarily updating their social media handles (imagine if it were actually required, whereby Facebook and Instagram say something like, congratulations! We've noticed that you are a new parent, would you like to update your name now or wait a short while longer?). We all dream of achieving self-actualization, and not merely riding on the coat tails of our fathers’ or family names (one would hope). Hence, we should not be guilty of doing the same with our offspring’s name.

CULINARY TALES FROM THE PANTRY, BEIRUT
Interview with Chef Sally Jane By Deepa Pant
Chef Sally Jane has worked as a private chef and caterer in New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, Amman, Beirut, and on a grand sailboat in the Mediterranean. Her clients have included royalty from various countries, several rock legends, fashionistas, Formula One champions, and many a duke and duchess. From earning an MFA in creative writing from Columbia to receiving a Grand Diploma in Culinary Arts from the French Culinary Institute in New York, Chef Sally Jane has traversed an unusual path. She currently lives in Beirut with her husband, a journalist with CNN, and loves “Everything Beirut”; especially, she says, the warmth of the people, the hospitality, the chaos and the climate. "The zest for life of the Lebanese and their can-do attitude constantly amazes and inspires me," she adds. In her culinary journey, Chef Sally Jane's latest venture, The Pantry has become somewhat of a phenomenon in Beirut. The boutique kitchen space artfully weaves elegant meals, catering events and cooking classes. The Pantry offers a wide array of services, seeped in healthy, farm-to-table approach to cooking and eating. Deepa Pant chats with Chef Sally Jane Hurst of Beirut’s The Pantry exclusively for bazaar, about her passion for food, global influences, ingredients that intrigue her, and her impressions as an American expat living in Lebanon. From the publishing world to the culinary world how did you get interested in food? I’ve really always been interested in food! From gorging on a shrimp cocktail platter at Christmas when I was three-years-old, to inviting my family to a sit-down three course dinner that I cooked all on my own when I was just 10, it’s always been something I love sharing and preparing. I do believe strongly that watching my mother cook and her encouraging me to help her in the kitchen was a strong force in helping me get to my current career.
And, on a more personal level, what is your favorite dish? It depends on the season, how virtuous I’m feeling, where I am, if I’ve been cooking a lot or not. I will say that my Spaghetti Carbonara has always been my comfort food.
How would you describe your style of cooking? I’ve moved around a lot in my life and I think this has made me interested in discovering local ingredients and recipes. My cooking adapts to the landscape I’m in, but always uses the freshest ingredients with a bit of classic French technique and lots of Midwestern heart.
How do you see the food scene changing in the region? Beirut is an incredibly dynamic city and the local food is delicious. I hope it and other countries in the region will not only cling to their traditional recipes, of which there are as many versions of each as there are people, but also look at the amazing wealth of local ingredients and experiment a bit. I’m starting to see that here in Beirut and it’s very exciting.
What's your favorite Middle Eastern spice? I really love sumac.
Why/how did you choose Beirut to settle down in? My husband is a journalist for CNN and after a brief
56
stint in Amman he was offered a position here, which was exciting to both of us! I had never been [Beirut] before he was offered the job so we came to check it out and I fell in love immediately! We moved here two months later. What is your impression of living in Beirut? I love the warmth of the people in Beirut, the hospitality, the chaos, the climate! People here often complain about how challenging life can be, but I like to remind them that there are challenges no matter where you live and the ones we have here can (mostly) be overcome. The zest for life of the Lebanese and their can-do attitude constantly amazes and inspires me. For more information, please visit Chef Sally's website at www.chefsallyjane.com. TOGETHER WITH MANGO Mario Sorrenti celebrates togetherness for MANGO’s new Autumn/Winter collection By bazaar staff
58
MANGO’s new Autumn/Winter 2018 campaign feels intimate and almost familiar. Like being invited to a huge picnic and your friends brought their friends. You might not know everyone, but everybody fits in and belongs easily. Mario Sorrenti invites us to view the daily lives of his protagonists through his lens. And no wonder it feels so personal. His protagonists included members of his family, friends and even their pets. Activist and model Adwoa Aboah shows up with her sister Kesewa and her cousin Alewya cementing the idea of family behind the campaign. The ambassador of the men’s line, Adrien Brody, is passionate about animals. Which is why his dog is his companion in the picture. Pictured together are also Amber Valletta and Carolyn Murphy, real-life close friends and international models. The cast also included Skate legend Steve Olson and his son Alex, the artist Langley Fox and the famous stylists Zoe Bedeaux and Helena Tejedor a reflection of how eclectic life can be. The legendary Primal Scream’s “Moving on up” is the soundtrack for the campaign video. The campaign’s message is obvious, it is all about personal ties, close relationships and family. It is also a message of an interwoven diversity that creates out togetherness. The new collection is a representation of the brand’s move towards a new direction in garment design. Evolving towards a contemporary aesthetic and embracing higher quality fabrics. It is all about being timeless but letting go of conventionalisms. The campaign is a throwback to 70’s inspired animal prints, rich colors and volumes. Chunky knits, long sleeves with rounded necks all come together, creating a cohesive collection. Detailed stitching adorns denim, elevating it to a whole new level. The men’s collection is even less subtle in its 70’s influences. Suits and outerwear come in ochre hued colors. If this were a movie Corduroy would be the leading actor, supported by leather. Flecks, braid reliefs and diamonds add layers and texture to the chunky knits that really stand out in the grays, stone and brown hues. Accessories bring the entire collection together. It is a collection after our own hearts. We want to dress up and look like our parents did when they were younger. We want to invite all of our friends, family and furry felines and throw a huge backyard barbecue while looking refined and eat smore’s by the fire.

THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME Mila Kunis, Kate McKinnon get real about motherhood, heartbreak By Andrea Mandell
Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon have some advice for women stuck in bad relationships. "Jump ship, babe," says McKinnon, who stars with Kunis in The Spy Who Dumped Me. "That's what I'd say. Just get out." The high-adrenaline, R-rated comedy serves up Kunis as Audrey, an introverted 30-year-old grocery store clerk ghosted by her boyfriend (Justin Theroux) only to learn he's an undercover CIA operative. What's a girl to do? Fly to Europe with her best friend Morgan (McKinnon) to untangle an international conspiracy, obviously. A word about heartbreak Audrey is blindsided by a breakup in The Spy Who Dumped Me, and it takes several car chases, some amateur Jason Bourne moves and a mad dash across Berlin, Paris and Prague for her to find her footing. What advice does Kunis, 34, have for young women in bad relationships? "If I could tell a 16-year-old anything, (it would be): No relationship is permanent," she says. "It took me until I was in my mid- to late 20s to realize, 'Oh if this isn't working out, I can simply walk away.'" McKinnon, 34, says time heals (most) wounds. "When you're younger, a year is such a higher proportion of your life. And as you age, one year becomes less and less of a significant fraction. So time does start to pass faster and you do start to put things in perspective more." Sorry, SNL fans: Helsinki is on ice It's no secret that McKinnon is the MVP of Saturday Night Live. (Thanks to zeitgeisty impersonations of everyone from Hillary Clinton and Jeff Sessions to Kellyanne Conway and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.) But the comedian's vibe is distinctly more mellow in person. "When I'm performing, I'm quite loud, and then in real life, you can't hear a word that I'm saying," she says, smiling. "I speak in dulcet tones only. I think people are sort of confused when they meet me by how shy I am and sometimes serious." The comedian, who jogs to work when the show is in season (SNL returns this fall), dashes hopes that SNL writers had a group text about a Trump/Putin Helsinki sketch (which would have been a perfect opening if the show wasn't on summer hiatus). "We all are in a different mode" right now she says. "I've been listening to a lot of podcasts and following (politics) and stuff but I'm not trying to think about how to make comedy out of it." 60
Finding your crew In The Spy Who Dumped Me, McKinnon and Kunis are gold-standard BFFs, so when the effervescent, occasionally outrageous Morgan (McKinnon) is deemed "a little too much" by a sneering male character, Audrey swings to her defense. In real life, both McKinnon and Kunis say they still have tight crews from their childhoods. "When I was younger, I remember being told that I was weird," says McKinnon. "I sort of felt bad about it, then I noticed that half of the people were telling me I was weird, but the other half were laughing. So I just decided to hang around those people instead. And that's been my strategy for my life." The movie's director and co-writer Susanna Fogel calls female friendships "one of the most important relationships in life." For me, the most important thing was to show adult female friendships as I see them," she says, explaining Audrey and Morgan's airtight bond. "Most movies about female friendships have some manufactured conflict and all the conflict that comes from a misunderstanding or a petty argument." In this film, nothing, not dudes, a restaurant shootout or threat of torture by way
of a psychotic Russian gymnast, can break these two up. Party of four What changed after Kunis gave birth to her second child, Dimitri, 1? "Everything," says Kunis who also has a daughter, Wyatt, 3, with husband Ashton Kutcher. "You don't appreciate how easy having one kid is until you have two – and then it's too late to appreciate having just one. "When the second baby pops up, you're like, 'Oh, my God, I've got to keep both of you alive, but the two of you have completely different interests! What am I going to do?' I'm physically exhausted keeping them literally just not falling off the edge of (anything)," she says. So goodbye, sleep. "The one thing that I tell people is you'll never sleep the same ever again," says Kunis with a wry laugh. "You will ultimately sleep through the night, your kids will sleep through the night. (But) I simply never slept soundly ever again. Because you're always concerned about that little noise that can happen, that little sound that can be made, that little hiccup." She shrugs. "It's not bad, it's just a different life."

NEO-NOIR CHIC
H&M Studio
Autumn/Winter 2018 By bazaar staff
This season, H&M have found inspiration in a very unexpected place. Fans of the cult-classic, Twin Peaks, will notice the nod to the dream logic aesthetic in the 2018 Autumn/Winter Studio collection. It is an interesting choice, since the nineties series that takes place in 1989 has a strong classic Americana vibe to it and fits comfortably with the aesthetic of this neo-noir inspired collection. 62
But H&M have taken all of these elements and turned them into amazing possibilities. Individual pieces from the collection easily move from feminine to masculine. Yet, it all blends together nicely. It is easy to transform yourself from a fifties movie icon or a lumberjack, without ever missing a beat. Pair a sculpted wool dress with a cropped wool cardigan, and wear both under a nipped-in coated cotton trench coat and you are the perfect mid-century lady. Or channel your inner lumberjack with the must-have indigo precision denim jacket and sturdy turn-up jeans, a jersey turtleneck lingering underneath. You could also choose to live out your 80’s dreams in the neon pop of a fuchsia-red feminine pleated skirt, set against the subversive wood grain print on a grungy viscose-silk suit. Pernilla Wohlfahrt, H&M’s Design Director is pleased with the collections duality and direction, says “With H&M Studio, we love the play between the feminine and masculine and this year we added a 50’s twist – there are ultra-feminine options combined with mannish details and super-classic pieces that invite you to create your own distinctive look,”. You no longer have to stick to one side of the gendered fashion spectrum anymore. Use layers and accessories to add a masculine or feminine edge to an otherwise one-sided outfit. Pair squaretoed boots with preppy cardigans. Or wear a hard-edged biker jackets over bow-tied blouses. Outerwear and jackets remain true to the collection’s commitment to the new-noir style. The ribbed funnel neck collar leather biker jacket is going to be our next favorite jacket that completes for when we are being punks. But that doesn’t mean we won’t also get the navy double-breasted wool pea coat and be extra chic. We are also definitely going for the mini trench coat, with its nipped-in silhouette, because who doesn’t need a trench coat? There is no need to shy away from the bolder, more stylized H&M Studio pieces, they are meant to be mixed and matched for an urban modern feel. The cooler months can’t come soon enough.

WINNER'S CIRCLE
One-on-one with Dana Winner By Nejoud Al Yagout
Dana Winner, an American living in Kuwait, is a testament to how citizenship has nothing to do with transforming a place. Her activism is shaping the evolution of our country. There is no way you will not be inspired to do something for your community after hearing her story. Dana, tell us about Access Jahra, and how you catapulted this initiative. I became aware of the U.S. State Dept. English Access Microscholarship program when AMIDEAST conducted the program in Kuwait. It provides English language and multicultural education for underprivileged students all around the world. In Kuwait, it is only available to Kuwaitis. More than 10 years ago, I was able to persuade the leaders of that program to accept my stateless stepdaughter into the program as a Kuwaiti. Since then, other Kuwaiti Stateless students were admitted to the program and also into the Youth Exchange Scholarship (YES). In the past two years, I began talking up the idea of putting the Access program closer to the target student population—i.e. in Jahra. Dr. Zennia Paganini, U.S. Embassy Cultural Attaché championed the idea and we were able to make it happen last December. There are many causes in each society that need to be addressed in order to create a wholesome, inclusive society. How can we solve the societal crisis of statelessness? It is very simple. Kuwait citizenship should be made a civil right that can be taken to court so that people can plead their case. If people think about the implications of the roots of statelessness in Kuwait they will realize the cause is that citizenship is a “sovereign issue” provided by a medieval concept of “grace and favor” rather than a civil right. So you're a bit Cali, a bit Kuwaiti. Has living here dissolved the stereotypes for you or enhanced them? The human brain functions by categorizing. So, yes, I have stereotypes, archetypes, icons, role models and so on. I have lived in Washington D.C., traveled extensively as a professional singer/recording artist, lived and studied in Germany, then lived and worked in London, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Emirates, and Iraq. So, the cultural disruption began when I was 16. All of these cultures have disrupted my mental categorizations of people. Perhaps the most important shuffling of archetypes inspired by living in the Middle East has been to categorize The People of The Book as a homogenous group with far more in common than is usually recognized by most people. In general, my categorization of people tends to revolve around values rather than ethnicity, especially in regards to spiritual perspective and integrity. 64
Faith is an integral aspect of your being. How does it propel your activism? I see faith as a function. In other words, faith is action/activism. It is often confused with hope (an emotion) and trust (a rational decision) and belief (a mental choice). Faith is based on purpose. Purpose grows out of who a person is, who a person was created to be. I experience faith as operating mostly subconsciously and it is driven by a purpose that arises from the essence of who a person is. Who I am, in at least one aspect, is someone who loves a wonderful man who is stateless. So I would say that love propels my activism while faith is the function through which that love is active. My love for my wonderful husband, who is stateless despite being a second-generation Kuwait police officer and having been in the Kuwait resistance against the Iraq occupation, and my compassion for his suffering has generated compassion for others who are stateless. Also, my dad taught me from the age of three to be a champion for civil rights. He was very courageous as an anti-racism activist in Washington, D.C. So, it is a habit to stand against injustice. And, finally, you are also a tech wizard who tours local institutions to teach them about cyber
safety. You meet people from all walks of life. What bridges people together? I want to believe that “something “good” is bridging people together. Certainly, we have done some great things with information technology and can do even more good with IT to bring people together and build a more sustainable culture. Here in the Middle East, our use of IT is still quite far from an optimal benefit to society. I am not currently seeing a movement towards building bridges between people. The current zeitgeist appears to be a phase of regression after about 70 years of breaking down barriers to build global peace. The most optimistic thought that I have at this time is that human growth always goes through a consolidation phase. This gives people a chance to become committed to the progress. I hope that is what is happening now. I hope that during this time of consolidation we will recognize that we all have the same fundamental needs and that Love is the only worthy purpose.

HOW TO TRICK YOUR BRAIN INTO NOT GETTING BORED Disengagement isn’t a motivation problem–it’s biological By Stephanie Vozza
You may have loved your job when you started, but it’s not unusual to get in a rut. If you’re experiencing burnout, changing your mindset can bypass it, says Daniel M. Cable, author of Alive at Work: The Neuroscience of Helping Your People Love What They Do. “Our brains are not wired for routine and repetition at work,” he says. “Disengagement isn’t a motivation problem; it’s a biological one.” Cable was a professor at the University of North Carolina when he says he lost his zest for his own job and slowly descended into boredom. After being diagnosed and treated for Hodgkin lymphoma, his perspective changed, and he found a sense of gratitude for his job. He stumbled on research about the part of the brain called the ventral striatum, also called the “seeking system,” and its role in being your best self. “This part of our brain urges us from the time we’re babies to explore what we don’t know,” he says. “Little kids can be given an awesome toy with noises and buttons and they’ll be really into it for a week or a few days. Then they find something else that they hadn’t seen before, like car keys, and they find that way more interesting. It wasn’t because the thing is cool; it’s because the thing is new.” When we succumb to these urges, our brain delivers dopamine to reward us and that makes us feel more alive, and the same thing can happen at work, says Cable, currently a professor of organizational behavior at London Business School. “When we’re in the rut of routine for the 502nd time, this part of the brain shuts off,” says Cable. “Your brain is saying, ‘You’re better than this. We’re not built of this. We’re built for bigger things.’ Then the brain stops the release of dopamine, which makes it seem not only boring but that it takes forever.” There are three ways you can trigger your brain to release dopamine, and get out of your rut, says Cable. 1. PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS Identify your signature strengths and the impact you can have by using them on a daily basis. “How can you bring value to the team by using your unique strength?” asks Cable. When he started tapping into his strength (humor), Cable says he regained an appreciation for his job. “It made me feel good and I saw my students lean in when I used humor,” he says. “As a professor, it was something unique to me. I decided to bring it when I teach class instead of leaving it at home.” Think of your job as a flexible vehicle and determine how you can bring your strength to it. 66
2. BE WILLING TO EXPERIMENT Avoid the risk of routine by shaking things up. Cable decided to develop new classes instead of teaching the same class over and over. “A sales manager who was promoted and never got a chance to get out in the field might start going into the field again to talk to clients,” suggests Cable. “It’s just a way to refresh and learn new things.” Activate that seeking system by going outside of your comfort zone, suggests Cable. 3. TAP INTO PURPOSE Finally, analyze cause and effect in your role. We all want to see the impact of our actions, says Cable. Leaders can help employees personalize the purpose of work by providing direct conversations with the people who use work as well as internal decision makers. “Try to think about the story you want to tell yourself about why you do your job,” says Cable. He admits that part of the
boredom he felt with is job is that he was telling himself that his job as a professor was helping rich, entitled kids double their salary by earning an MBA. “It wasn’t bad or illegal, but it was not inspiring to me and not worth my time,” he says. “I asked myself why I was telling that story? What if I use teaching as a platform for a different purpose? I started teaching executives on leading change. The job didn’t change; I repurposed it around what I cared about. Doesn’t make it more true or right, more energizing to me.” Design your workplace to provide at least one of these triggers daily or weekly, suggests Cable. “You can’t reenergize your workday and your team with a flash-inthe-pan, one-off offsite,” says Cable. “Engagement requires bringing your best self to work.” Photo by Beth Solano on Unsplash.

CON ARTISTS, REGULATORS, AND COIN KINGS, OH MY!
Your guide to the brave new world of cryptocurrencies By Ainsley Harris
For years, crypto was the domain of technolibertarians and so-called cypherpunks, who traded—and shared their enthusiasm for—alternative currencies on the dark web and message boards. But the meteoric rise (and fall and rise and . . .) of bitcoin, Ethereum, and other coins over the past year has catapulted crypto into the public imagination. Paper billionaires have been minted overnight, catching the eye of neophyte investors, con artists, and regulators alike. Here's a guide to the new players. The Evangelists Brian Armstrong, cofounder and CEO of the six-yearold Coinbase trading platform, was the first to put a consumer-friendly face on crypto. His service now has more than 20 million users and, by the end of last year, had exceeded $1 billion in revenue from trading fees. Mainstream interest has led Square, Robinhood, and Circle to debut crypto-trading apps as well, creating more options for people to enter the market. The Coin Kings One of the biggest questions facing early crypto bulls: What to do with their newfound wealth? Chris Larsen, cofounder of virtual currency Ripple, which rose 36,000% over the course of 2017 (it has since come back down to earth—somewhat), used some of his billions to help his company donate $29 million to fund all of the 35,000 classroom projects on DonorsChoose.org in March. The Winklevoss twins, who used their Facebook millions to launch a New Yorkbased exchange called Gemini, have started dabbling in crypto art auctions. Other bitcoin millionaires have been moving to Puerto Rico to establish a crypto utopia, called Sol, in order to avoid federal taxes on income and capital gains while sipping cocktails. The Hustlers As currencies proliferate and remain largely unregulated, scammers have rolled out fake and misleading initial coin offerings to investors with false promises of returns. A recent study found that 80% of ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings) are scams. Some are led by marketing-savvy con artists, who lend an air of credibility to their ventures by issuing white papers about their work. Others have more highprofile backers: As Venezuela's currency, the bolívar, plummets, President Nicolas Maduro has been promoting an altcoin called the petro that he claims "can take on Superman." 70
The Brazen Opportunists This year began with companies using crypto for a stock price boost by adding variations on "blockchain" and "crypto" to their names: beverage maker Long Island Iced Tea became Long Blockchain, and Canadian gold-mining company Leeta Gold transformed into Hive Blockchain Technologies, and began mining crypto. Kodak launched KodakCoin, which can be used to license photographs. Kudos to them for recognizing a coattail to ride on. The Skeptics Warren Buffett has called crypto a "mirage." Bill Gates said it's "one of the crazier speculative things" he's encountered. Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, labeled bitcoin a fraud (though he believes in blockchain technology). Just as damning: PwC economist Alex de Vries found that the electricity required to generate a single crypto coin is equivalent to the energy used by the average American household over two years. If his analysis is correct, bitcoin mining could consume 0.5% of the world's electricity this year. The Crypto-Glitterati Where there's ridiculous wealth, there are celebrities angling to get closer. Snoop Dogg performed—and hit up the parties—at New York City's first-ever Blockchain Week in May. Paris Hilton, DJ Khaled, and Floyd Mayweather have touted sketchy ICOs, prompting the SEC to issue a warning about the risks of associating with fraudulent investments.
The Enlightened Old Guard While some finance veterans have approached crypto as either a nuisance or an existential threat, others have been quick to embrace it: Jeffrey Sprecher, CEO of Intercontinental Exchange (the owner of the New York Stock Exchange), is moving forward with plans to open a bitcoin trading platform, as is Goldman Sachs. The Enforcers Nine months after establishing a cyber unit to chase down ICO scams and fraud, the [American] SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) solidified its regulatory efforts by appointing Valerie Szczepanik as the commission's first crypto czar in June. In April, the New York Attorney General launched an inquiry into how exchanges such as Coinbase protect investors. The Department of Justice, meanwhile, is reportedly looking into how traders might be manipulating the price of bitcoin and other currencies. The Dreamers Swept up in (and often spit out by) the crypto frenzy: small-scale investors. Families are using savings accounts and even selling homes to buy bitcoin, exposing themselves to the currency's gyrations. And, signaling the emergence of a new American dream, a recent study of 1,000 university students found that one in five has used loan money to buy cryptocurrencies. One graduate student posted on Reddit that he had to declare bankruptcy after trading bitcoin left him $50,000 in debt.

LET THIS BRAIN SCIENTIST OPTIMIZE YOUR MORNING ROUTINE What you do in the morning can make or break your brain’s performance By Tara Swart
Struggling to focus throughout your workday? You’re not alone. We live in a world of never-ending distractions, making it harder to concentrate for long periods of time. However, a few simple changes to your morning routine can significantly boost your cognitive functioning. As a neuroscientist, these are the habits that I try to follow each day in order to operate at peak mental performance. Here’s a step-by-step guide to a morning routine that’s kind to your brain. STEP 1: PRIORITIZE GETTING EIGHT HOURS OF SLEEP Researchers estimate that the average person slept between eight and nine hours a night in the 1960s. Now, research puts that figure closer to six hours and 40 minutes. That simply isn’t enough for you to function at your peak (although, interestingly, nine hours is likely to be too much for some people). You should aim to get between seven and eight hours of shut-eye since any less will likely impact on your pituitary function, which regulates crucial hormones governing your appetite, mood, alertness, and eventually your overall resilience. Of course, you won’t always be able to get a great night’s sleep every night, but having a consistent target to aim for is an important first step. STEP 2: HYDRATE FIRST THING, AND DON’T MASK IT WITH CAFFEINE Ever have that groggy feeling when you wake up, and decide to remedy it by downing a double espresso? That’s actually the worst thing you can do for your brain and body first thing in the morning. When you’re still feeling tired after getting up, you’re probably dehydrated, and a high-caffeine pick-me-up acts as a diuretic, sapping even more water from your body. Instead, start your day with a glass of water, a big mug of hot water and lemon, or a cup of turmeric tea. This ancient spice has been shown to improve memory function and concentration even after a single 400mg dose due to the active ingredient in it: curcumin. Some varieties combine green tea and turmeric for a double brain boost. Green tea, to be fair, does have caffeine, but it contains considerably less than black tea or coffee and is packed with antioxidant compounds that boost brain health. If you add a teaspoon of coconut oil to the mix, you may even get an extra 20-minute brain boost. STEP 3: STRETCH It might feel like stretching is a luxury you can’t afford 72
when you’re rushing to work. But it’s a great way to wake up your brain and your muscles. Doing a mini yoga circuit, like a few minutes of sun salutations, will improve oxygen flow to your brain. Any upsidedown poses–even just lying on the floor with your legs against the wall–enhances blood flow and redistributes nutrients to the upper half of your body. STEP 4: MEDITATE FOR 12 MINUTES Around 80% of the most successful leaders I’ve worked with go through regular mindfulness routines in the morning. Mindfulness meditation can improve your focus and executive function, the higher-level thinking required for effective and flexible problemsolving. These practices also decrease rumination, a type of negative thinking that acts like a brainenergy vampire, especially in the morning. And you don’t need to do it for very long to reap the benefits; a 2010 study using U.S. Marines as volunteers showed that just 12 minutes a day was enough to increase mental resilience. STEP 5: EAT THE SAME BREAKFAST AT THE SAME TIME Sustained energy is the key to mental performance. Great brain-friendly breakfast choices include eggs, avocado, salmon, nuts, seeds, and berries. Avoid pastries and white bread and sugary cereals, all of which will give you a mental and physical dip a few
hours after eating them. Eating your breakfast at the same time every day also helps regulate your circadian rhythm and digestion, priming your brain for peak performance and reducing the need for unnecessary decision-making. STEP 6: START YOUR WORKDAY WITH THE MOST DIFFICULT TASKS Neurotransmitters such as serotonin take a natural 24-hour dip at around 3 p.m. So it’s worth arranging challenging meetings or complex tasks that are likely to be most cognitively demanding, early in the day. That’s the time when your brain energy is at its peak, so make sure you’re taking advantage of it. Fortunately, introducing a brain healthy morning routine doesn’t mean having to adopt a complicated, lengthy morning routine. Begin by introducing these habits and, if need be, re-sequencing the ones you’ve already adopted; you can start small by making just one change at a time. A morning routine that optimizes your brain for peak performance is as much about what you do after waking up as how and when you do it.

HOW TO STAY OUT OF THE OFFICE GOSSIP MILL There are healthier ways to bond with your coworkers By Lisa Evans
Oh, the seductive allure of office gossip. We all know those people in the office, the ones that always seem to have the “insider knowledge.” They’re the ones we seek out when we want to add some spice to an otherwise boring workday. It’s hard not to be attracted to office gossip, and Don Rheem, author of Thrive by Design: The Neuroscience That Drives High-Performance Cultures knows why. Gossip, Rheem says, feeds into our brain’s natural desire to feel included, connected, and valued. “There are neurochemical drivers and felt rewards when we are able to connect with others,” says Rheem. “Information is a currency the brain holds in high esteem.” When we’re out of the loop, we tend to feel insecure. Perhaps we even think that we are the source of gossip. Rheem says it’s natural to be drawn into a group where we see congregating, laughing, and talking–if nothing else, to assure ourselves that we aren’t the subject of the chatter. But while gossip may feed our brain’s need for attention and belonging, it can also be destructive to our emotional state, sucking up a lot of energy and creating a negative work environment. It can also be harmful to our productivity as we waste a lot of time focusing on negativity. But how do you avoid the temptation of the office gossip mill? Here are 7 tips to try: 74
LOOK FOR POSITIVE WAYS TO CONNECT WITH OTHERS The water cooler gossip fuels your desire to be included, but Rheem suggests looking for other ways to bond with people. Try joining a committee or participating in social activities around the office such as volunteer days. These activities satisfy your brain’s desire to connect with others, and also contribute to a more positive workplace culture.
CALL IT AS YOU SEE IT Often, people who gossip don’t realize they are gossiping. “They see themselves as well-informed, smart, and their opinions so valuable that everyone should listen to them,” says Rheem. Saying, “This is starting to sound like gossip, I’d rather not talk about this” is a way to set healthy boundaries about what kind of engagement you’re willing to participate in and what you aren’t.
SWITCH GEARS Have a few conversation switchers up your sleeve so you can change course when the conversation starts to turn to gossip. Rather than getting roped in, start a new conversation. A positive conversation switcher may be as simple as, “How was your weekend?”
GET TO THE BOTTOM OF IT “Did you know Mary’s turned down that promotion?” It can be hard to know if this is gossip or factual. Asking, “How do you know that?” can help you to determine if the conversation is one of gossip or one of fact sharing. Asking questions like this also helps to position you as a person only interested in sharing factual information, not as someone who is interested in having a conversation around speculation and gossip.
LEAVE THE CONVERSATION Simply remove yourself from the gossip situation. Saying “Hey, good chatting with you, but I’m on a tight deadline and I’m going to head back to my desk for a while” is a nice way to gracefully bow out of a gossip conversation without calling out the fact that you’re uncomfortable with the gossip. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH A POSITIVE CROWD We all know those individuals in the office who seem to be able to sniff out gossip. The ones who are always looking for someone to whisper their “insider knowledge” to. Rather than connecting with these individuals, choose to surround yourself with individuals who bring a positive attitude.
DON’T SPREAD THE GOSSIP Once you become aware of the “hot gossip” in the office, it can be hard not to want to share. After all, gossip makes us feel like we’re connected to others. But spreading the gossip not only negatively affects the workplace culture, it can harm your professional reputation and destroy your chances of advancement in the company. Bottom line, don’t repeat what you hear.

JUNE OVEN
PARTICULA GOCUBE
PAC-MAN ARCADE CABINET
SPYRA ONE WATER GUN
ANKI VECTOR ROBOT
HAL 9000 REPLICA
Developed by former Apple engineers, the June Oven can do the work of seven appliances in one compact package. The oven works like a convection oven, toaster, air fryer, dehydrator, slow cooker, broiler, and warming drawer and has an internal camera that recognizes more than 65 foods automatically. It preheats three times faster than a traditional oven, and be controlled using the touchscreen or from anywhere with the June smartphone app.
Many times, digital takes on classic toys end up losing the fun of the original. This is not one of those times. The Spyra One Water Gun improves on its analog predecessors in nearly every imaginable way. Instead of releasing an indiscriminate stream of water, it shoots precise, 30ml water "bullets" that stay tight up to 15 feet and are still effective up to 30. It automatically refills from any clean water source with a built-in filter to keep small particles out and holds 25 shots at a constant pressure, so you never have to pump again.
80
When attempting to improve upon the world's bestselling toy, there's no reason to reinvent the wheel. The Particula GoCube doesn't reinvent the Rubik's Cube, it just softens the edges. With its hand-friendly form, it also packs Bluetooth for connecting to an app that uses internal sensors to track movement. Tutorials are available to help learn the cube, light indicators to know your status, and a battle mode lets two players go against each other in a race to solve it the quickest.
Anki is best known for their Overdrive robotic cars, but they got their start with the coding-focused Cozmo robot. They're using the experience from both to build Vector. Described as a home robot, Vector can recognize people and respond to your voice, setting timers, telling the weather, or answering simple queries. It's not quite an Echo, and while it has sensors to let it move autonomously, it's not going to clean your floors — in fact, it's designed to sit on a table.
While playing classic games can bring out nostalgia, holding a controller can't replicate the feel of playing the arcade game. This Pac-Man Quarter Size Arcade Cabinet can, without taking up a ton of space. It stands under 17" tall and is incredibly detailed, replicating the iconic 1980 cabinet down to the graphics around the screen and quarter slots. It's playable and will be joined in by cabinets for Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, and Galaxian, marking the beginning of a full pint-sized arcade.
Launched in time for the film's 50th anniversary, this HAL 9000 Replica is a spitting image of 2001: A Space Odyssey's antagonist. ELEVATION
YOU CAN FIX YOUR BRAIN
Robert Langdon, Harvard professor of symbology, arrives at the ultramodern Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to attend the unveiling of a discovery that “will change the face of science forever.” The evening’s host is Edmond Kirsch, a fortyyear-old billionaire and futurist, and one of Langdon’s first students. But the meticulously orchestrated evening suddenly erupts into chaos, and Kirsch’s precious discovery teeters on the brink of being lost forever. Facing an imminent threat, Langdon is forced to flee. With him is Ambra Vidal, the elegant museum director who worked with Kirsch. They travel to Barcelona on a perilous quest to locate a cryptic password that will unlock Kirsch’s secret. Navigating the dark corridors of hidden history and extreme re ligion, Langdon and Vidal must evade an enemy whose all-knowing power seems to emanate from Spain’s Royal Palace, uncovering clues that bring them face-to-face with Kirsch’s shocking discovery.
In his first book, Justin Timberlake has created a characteristically dynamic experience, one that combines an intimate, remarkable collection of anecdotes, reflections, and observations on his life and work with hundreds of candid images from his personal archives that range from his early years to the present day, in locations around the world, both on and off the stage. Justin discusses many aspects of his childhood, including his very early love of music and the inspiration behind many of his hit songs and albums. He talks about his songwriting process, offering the back story to many of his hits. He muses on his collaborations with other artists and directors, sharing the details of many performances in concert, TV comedy, and film. He also reflects on who he is, examining what makes him tick, speaking candidly about fatherhood, family, close relationships, struggles, and his search to find an inner calm.
Rye Mallett, a fearless "freight dog" pilot charged with flying cargo to far-flung locations, is often rough-spoken and all business, but soft on regulations when they get in the way of meeting a deadline. But he does have a rock-solid reputation: he will fly in the foulest weather, day or night, and deliver the goods safely to their destination. So when Rye is asked to fly into a completely fogbound northern Georgia town and deliver a mysterious black box to a Dr. Lambert, he doesn't ask questions. As Rye's plane nears the isolated landing strip, more trouble than inclement weather awaits him. He is greeted first by a sabotage attempt on his plane that causes him to crash land, and then by Dr. Brynn O'Neal, who claims she was sent for the box in Dr. Lambert's stead. Despite Rye's "no-involvement" policy when it comes to other people's problems, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to the intrigue surrounding his cargo and to the mysterious Brynn.
Although Scott Carey doesn’t look any different, he’s been steadily losing weight. There are a couple of other odd things, too. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. Scott doesn’t want to be poked and prodded. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis. In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King’s most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low grade—but escalating—battle with the people next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott’s lawn. One of the women is friendly; the other, cold as ice. Both are trying to launch a new restaurant. When Scott finally understands the prejudices they face–including his own—he tries to help. Unlikely alliances, the annual foot race, and the mystery of Scott’s affliction bring out the best in people who have indulged the worst in themselves and others.

SO FAR ZO FUN
Exploring TEKZONE with Zo the fun-loving robot! By bazaar staff
It has only been a few months since Zo, a Zetan from the planet Zeta in the Andromeda Galaxy first arrived through his time traveling portal to Earth, but already he and TEKZONE are the talk of the town! These fun-loving Zetans live to have a great time and Zo has been spreading thrills and joy ever since landing right here in Kuwait. bazaar travelled to meet Zo through the time tunnel in the Forum of The Avenues and were shown around Zo’s favorite TEKZONE attractions, some of which are the first in the world, if not the entire galaxy! Firstly, Zo got us signed in with a personalized account so we could see how many crystals we collected throughout the day on various rides and attractions. The crystals are then exchanged for prizes or for more rides. As well as a huge arcade with over 80 games, there is a Virtual Reality (VR) motion cinema and more physically challenging attractions. Zo encouraged us to go at warp speed on “Magic 84
Bikes”, where the harder you pedal the higher you go and the more crystals you can earn. Because some of the games are scored, we were able to compete against each other or team up to achieve maximum points. Zo got us to push our sensory exploration to the limits in “The Cave Explorer” where we crawled through darkened tunnels with only a helmet flashlight turned on to guide the way. We then went on to experience a virtual yet thrilling 1000m roller coaster ride that we designed ourselves on the “Finger Coaster”. There is no end to the possibilities of dips, loops and drops here. It is VR but honestly you still get the feel of the crank of the cars chugging up the track, the whoosh of the wind as you’re whipped sideways along and the vast 360-degree views from when you’re at the top of the track’s highest hill. For those waiting for their turn there’s a screen where you can actually see what those riding the Finger Coaster can see. Continuing our fun-filled exploration, Zo pointed out the floor and walls which seemed to move! Adding to the exhilaratingly charged atmosphere the physical environment within TEKZONE is always changing. There are three effects to experience; “under water”, “jungle” and “future city”. The moving images are
cast onto the floors by 85 projectors and shown on 70 screens and LED video walls across the park. Out of the corner of your eye you can spot a virtual crab crawling quickly across the floor or look down and realize you are crossing a roped bridge flanked by dense jungle foliage. There is always something to catch your attention in TEKZONE. We loved the target games, as we’re super competitive at bazaar, and battling against each other to win the most points on the “Game Changer” was exciting! This is the first room in the Middle East that rotates 360 degrees allowing you to experience 4 different shooting games during the ride. Zo decided we may need a moment to recover from overloading our senses but the fun did not stop even though we were not running around or shooting at something. We exercised our brains in one of the two multi-media escape rooms. Both rooms are hightech and digitized so you get a futuristic experience. There are three themes here too; “Pirates”, “Ancient Egypt” and “Leonardo da Vinci”. The rooms are sized differently to accommodate smaller or larger groups, 5-8 team members is ideal. Looking after the smaller children in the group Zo took them to the “Toddlers’ Play Area” and “Soft Play
Area”. Here you can find a toddlers-only trampoline, a tube slide, and a soft ball aiming game. Next door to this is the “Funlabs” Interactive Arts and Crafts area. We colored-in a templated fish picture, scanned it into the virtual aquarium and watched as our fish swam around with the other programmed sea-life. Projected onto the Funlabs side-wall we could see a road map. This exhibit has a table-pad with virtual pencils that are used to color-in your chosen vehicle. Simply swipe it up onto the screen wall after you are done coloring. This is intelligent interaction that is fun for all ages. In the same game space there are sand pits which produce different images as you play in the sand. While these activities may be ideal for toddlers and young children, parents and caregivers will also have fun enjoying these shared experiences. If there was one attraction that Zo was really keen to show us, it was the only Virtual Reality Bumper Car experience in existence. Here we bumped cars in reality but also we were boxing and flying around deep space at the same time! It was just like a 4D cinematic experience. With over 100 attractions, nearly 90 arcade games, the capacity for over 1500 daily visitors within 4250m2 of fun space, as well as refueling choices from Raising Canes, Starbucks and a TEKZONE snack stand with fresh popcorn amongst other treats, Zo will tell you and we agree that this is a full-day experience. As the idea is to also earn crystals which you can exchange for more ride credits or prizes, Zo is also on hand before each attraction to tell you exactly how many cystals the attraction is worth. For example, Zo will tell you if you want to earn more crystals you should visit a particular ride, or if you want to use fewer crystals, go and try this other game instead of that one. The information is all marked very clearly on the display units outside each big attraction. As Zo accompanied us to the exit we noticed the TEKZONE wall of achievement. We checked to see if any of us had made it onto the “Wall of Fame” for the day but we will just have to try harder next time, and we want to soon. Perhaps if we go more often we might make it onto the year-so-far tally and we can compare our totals to the other time-traveling TEKZONE visitors! Zo really is a wonderfully sociable and fun robot and it looks like his reputation proceeds him as TEKZONE opens at 10 am but by 10.02 am there was a queue at the ticket counters! Get ready to enjoy and exhaust yourself when you visit TEKZONE.
Visit the world’s very first TEKZONE situated in The Forum - The Avenues, Lower Ground Floor. To discover more about TEKZONE, follow them on Facebook and Instagram on @TEKZONEME. UNSTOPPABLE
RAISE VIBRATION
The lineup for the new album features new members Dave Depper and Zac Rae, as well as original members Ben Gibbard, Nick Harmer, and Jason McGerr. Chris Walla, who appeared on Death Cab’s last album Kintsugi before announcing his departure from the group, did not contribute to the new LP. The emo veterans have also released a video for the first single from the LP, “Gold Rush,” which features Gibbard wandering through and ultimately getting stuck among the masses in a crowded city.
A celebration of her legacy and a bold step forward, Unstoppable features a funky and contemporary sound that’s steeped in Southern soul and blues. The album features a rhythm section made up of Staton’s sons along with bassist Marcel Williams and drummer Marcus Williams (Isaac Hayes, Pointer Sisters). Unstoppable features six originals written or co-written by Staton. It’s a deeply personal record and one that explores current events.
Extra-long careers are increasingly rare, as rock star status is reserved for a handful of crazy musicians, often as eccentric as they are prolific. Inspired by his idols, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and John Lennon, Lenny Kravitz has always infused a heavy dose of rock into his retro soul. And while his music is perceived by some as a bit insipid or lacking originality – a mainstream roar with overly obvious references – the 50-something makes it work every time, undoubtedly thanks to his irresistible groove.
RUBY
T69 COLLAPSE
MONSTERS EXIST
The legendary and multi-award winning, multiplatinum selling singer, songwriter and actress Macy Gray has confirmed that she will be released her tenth studio album titled Ruby on Artistry Music, a Mack Avenue label. Macy revealed the album is "gritty and grimy and dirty," and has elements of pop, R&B and jazz. Ruby is the follow up to her critically acclaimed jazz covers album Stripped which dropped in 2016 and sees Macy Gray collaborate with producers Johan Carlsson, Tommy Brown and Tommy Parker Lumpkins.
The release of new material from Aphex Twin excites us in no small part because we never know exactly what's about to go down. On Aphex Twin's last release, 2016's Cheetah EP, he delivered a lowtempo suite of steady, hazy material all-but begging to be interpolated into live dance sets. Before that, the full-length Syro from 2014 seemed to pull together all of Aphex Twin's many eccentricities into a rich, sometimes crushingly dense, palette. The Yen Sid of electronics born Richard D. James is now back with the dense, pummeling T69 Colllapse.
Monsters Exist is Paul and Phil Hartnoll's first proper studio LP since 2012's Wonky. (That same year, they also provided the score for the movie Pusher.) Two years later, the brothers announced Orbital would be parting ways after 25 years, only to return with a new single, "Kinetic 2017," last year. "When you haven't made an album in five years it just comes tumbling out," said Paul Hartnoll. "You don't need to spell out who the monsters are. We're not pointing our fingers at Donald Trump or Kim Jong-un. It's clear who the monsters are. I've never liked preaching to people."

LASER ASSAULT RIFLE
Polaris' three-wheel Slingshot is getting a new topend model for 2019 — the Grand Touring. The Grand Touring has a complement of new features that make for effortless long trips. The most noticeable change is the Slingshade, a semi-enclosed hardtop with hinged t-tops above the rider and passenger. A 7" glove-compatible touchscreen is included with navigation, backup camera, and a 100-watt audio system by Rockford Fosgate. And to make sure that trip is as comfortable as possible, new softer, quilted seats are inside.
Built in collaboration with Lost Surfboards and world-renowned shaper Matt "Mayhem" Biolos, the Tesla Surfboard is made to carve the surf like their cars carve the road. It's made with a mixture of the same matte and gloss finishes used on their cars and is reinforced with "Black Dart" carbon fiber. Limited to just 200 boards, it will fit in the Model S, Model X, and Model 3 Tesla car.

Live out your superhero fantasies for real in the Gravity Industries Jet Suit. While it lacks the weaponry of Iron Man's suit, it does have thrusters mounted next to your hands, letting you control your flight by body movement alone. It creates in excess of 1,000 hp, hitting speeds of over 30 mph, and is available in the Technology department of Selfridges London. Should you want to take a test run before committing, the store is also hosting a VR experience that gives you a first-hand look at what the suit is like.
The BlackFly flying car isn't quite the nuclearpowered flying cars that the Jetsons promised us, it's possibly better. Taking a leap over current electric cars, the BlackFly is an electric personal aerial transportation system that you won't need thousands of hours of training to fly. Triple-redundant flight controls, distributed, isolated battery cells, and features like cruise control and landing assist mean that the BlackFly is simple and intuitive to operate.
Combining the former's technical prowess with the latter's aerodynamic designs, the Triton x Aston Martin Project Neptune Submarine is a spy-worthy submersible. It's built on Vero Beach-based Triton's Low Profile (LP) 3-person platform, with a maximum depth of 1,640 feet, top speed of five knots, and a run time of 8 hours. Its signature bubble housing allows for near 360-degree views. To make sure you're comfortable while exploring the deep, Aston's in-house design team outfitted the interior with hand-stitched leather and carbon-fiber trim.
Developed in China and able to produce an energy beam that can't be seen by the naked eye, the ZKZM500 laser assault rifle could change warfare as we know it. The "non-lethal" weapon weighs under seven pounds, has a range of over half a mile, and is said to be powerful enough to burn through a gas tank to ignite the fuel in a split second. The rifle produces no sound, is powered by a lithium battery pack and can fire more than 1,000 times on a charge.

SHAWARMA: A SHORT GUIDE
Find out where you can get the best Shawarma in Kuwait!
By bazaar staff
What do you call a protein (chicken or meat) wrapped in pita bread with some vegetables? If your go-to response is “Shawarma”, then you’re not entirely wrong. But Alex who lives in Athens would call this a “Gyros,” while Adem in Istanbul would refer to this yummy wrap-like creation as a “Doner.” All these names are correct and refer to very similar dishes that revolve around the same theme. Keep reading to learn more about the delicious creation that is Shawarma and find out where you can get your next fix in Kuwait. The Turkish Doner It all began in the Ottoman Empire, where the original Doner was invented. The most important component of Doner is the meat, which is cooked on a vertical rotisserie. The word Doner comes from the Turkish word "dön-mek," which means “spin” or “turn”. Doner is typically served with a variety of toppings, including vegetables and pickles. It’s also served with at least one sauce, which can be put together from garlic, yogurt, spicy sauce, or tahini. Today, the Doner is a very popular Turkish street food, and has actually spread all over Europe, becoming Germany’s preferred street-snack of choice. If you haven’t tried it before, get your Doner experience organized and try out several varieties on Talabat, as restaurants like Iskender Doner and The Doner Factory are serving some that you might like. And if you’re looking for something different, Doner & B Boutique serves a Kuwaitiinspired spicy Maabouch Doner. Talk about fusion cuisine! The Greek Gyros Making its way to Greece through the Ottoman Empire, the Doner became known as “Gyros”, which means “turn” in Greek. Gyros is made of meat, chicken, or lamb wrapped up in a flatbread. Similar to Doner, Gyros is served with tomatoes, onions, tzatziki sauce, and sometimes French fries. It quickly became a popular fast food in Athens and it soon spread to the United States and across the world. Before you hop on the next flight to Athens, try ordering Gyros right here in Kuwait. Order from Mr Greek on Talabat and have your very own taste of Greece delivered right to your doorstep. The Arabic Shawarma Meanwhile, in another part of the Ottoman Empire, the Arabs started making “Shawarma”. Popular throughout the Arab world, the Shawarma is in essence similar to Doner and Gyros. Thin slices of chicken, beef, or both are mounted on a vertical grill. The meat is then cut and served as a plate or wrap with a variety of toppings. Every restaurant adds its own touch, but some of
the most popular toppings include French fries, tahini, garlic sauce, and pickled cucumbers and turnips. Shawarma lovers in Kuwait are spoiled for choice. Try a classic shawarma at Abou Jassem or Wadi Rum. Fancy a twist to your Shawarma? Then check out Shawarma Matic on Talabat where you can order Caesar Shawarma, Musakhan Shawarma, or a Mexican Shawarma. Dive into a world of Shawarma, Doners, and Gyros only with Talabat. Check out all the delicious restaurants delivering to you on www.Talabat.com.

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 22
PISCES FEB 19 – MAR 19
Emotions run high as disagreements turn into quarrels among members of a group you're affiliated with. Stay out of it. It won't do you any good to get involved. Write your impressions and share them after tempers have cooled. You might want to make one final push toward reaching a personal goal, but forces beyond your control could block you. Try to remain patient.
Some bizarre and rather silly dreams might come to you. They may be the sort that is so crazy that you actually wake up laughing. Don't dismiss them. Silly or not, these dreams are trying to tell you something. Write them down the way you would any other vivid dream, and analyze the symbols in the same way - even if they cause a few giggles.
CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22
ARIES MAR 20 – APR 19
Too many unfinished tasks may have you feeling pressured, creating unnecessary stress. Pace yourself and don't panic if you have to let some go for now. You're probably feeling more sensitive than usual, so you might also pick up stress from the people around you. Take periodic breaks and go for a walk. This should clear your head and make things easier for you.
If you're single, you could feel a very powerful attraction to someone unusual and perhaps a little wacky. If you're already in a relationship, you could glimpse a silly and rather insane side of your beloved you've never seen before. This could be a bit disconcerting but also make you laugh. That's part of the appeal of love - continuously learning about that special one.
LIBRA SEP 23 – OCT 22
Have you been looking for a new job? If so, you might hear of an opportunity from an unexpected source, perhaps at a social gathering. This could mean that someone unexpected brings it to your attention, or it could be a job in a new and unusual field. One way or another, as weird as it seems, it's worth consideration. Look into it and get all the facts before acting.
If you're in the arts or sciences, sudden inspiration could cause you to start or continue a project that means a lot to you. Some friends or group members could help out with useful information. Your mind may generate new ideas throughout the month. Once you've finished your work, take a walk and clear your head..
SCORPIO OCT 23 – NOV 22 Meditation, dreams, or visions could bring amazing insights your way. You might find them too bizarre to believe, at least at first, but follow-up research could reveal that what you've come up with is quite credible. Keep a journal of these revelations, because you might remember the gist but forget the details. They could be useful later.
TAURUS APR 20 – MAY 20
GEMINI MAY 21 – JUN 21 Either your partner or a colleague is likely to be irritable, which you might find upsetting. Bear in mind that this person's mood probably has little, if anything, to do with you or anything you've said or done. Just stay out of the way until your friend gets over it. This isn't a good time to host or attend social events or even accept invitations. Wait until later.
VIRGO AUG 23 – SEP 22 An unexpected letter could arrive, with a check enclosed, perhaps a gift, bonus, or offer to make more money. This might be a welcome break, possibly coming at a time when you really need it. If it's work, don't worry about the time involved. You'll be able to finish it quickly and efficiently. It might lead to more offers in the future.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21 You're an adventurous soul. Are you thinking about a little mischief? Are you going to propose that you and a friend or perhaps your partner skip town for a day and forget about work, chores, and other routine matters? You've been bored lately, so who could blame you? If you decide to do this, make sure everyone knows what's up. You don't want to burn any bridges.
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 19
An unexpected communication may come from someone connected with your career. This is good news, but it may be so off the wall that you could walk around in a daze for a while trying to make sense of it all. Don't agonize too much. You've worked hard for and deserve whatever it is that's suddenly coming to you. Think of it as a karmic reward. Go celebrate!
AQUARIUS JAN 20 – FEB 18 An unexpected chance to fly to a faraway place, perhaps at someone else's expense, could come to you. A group might be involved, perhaps one connected with education. Do you lecture or teach? If so, this might be a chance to give a lecture in an exciting place you've never been to before. Get your materials together, pack your bag, and go. Have fun! 100
