Step into summer in style

Regular price: KD9.900
And just like that, it’s June, with all that it entails. It’s summer, it’s hot, school’s out, the traffic is back to bearable, the jet skis are out in droves, the airport is pretty packed, and of course it’s that dreadful time of year where we all get invited to way too many going away parties and dinners for all of the expats leaving Kuwait for good. Those are always bittersweet events, since on the one hand, you’re excited that people you care about are about to start a new exciting journey. But on the other hand, since Kuwait is really all about the close friendships you make with amazing people from all around the world, and the way the friendships you make here are the closest ones you’ll probably ever make because of the unique social dynamic structure of the country, it’s extra hard to say goodbye and to let them go. All we can do is wish them luck, and hope they have a spare bedroom for us, for when we come to crash!
Until then, we’ll be busy exploring more of Kuwait and meeting new and inspiring individuals so we can share it all with you! The phenomenal creative and stylist Dalal Al Hajery a.k.a Daylal graces our pages in this month’s edition of Up Close & Personal, and for Truth or Dare we met up with Dia Daou, a Lebanese expat living in K-town, happy wife and mother of three who can make your cake dreams come true. Hamad Al Khudher interviews Hind AlKhatrash for this month’s Talking Greene, where she tells us more about her sustainable brand Leap Loves Green and how she partnered up with Australian sustainable period product brand Tsuno to bring it to Kuwait. An unexpected leap away, is Sara AlKhaled who captained and coached The Carnegie Melon University in Qatar team and scored a historic success. From scoring soccer goals, to feel-good ones, we met with Elika Mansouri, who has made it her life’s work to save the animals in Kuwait. Her work with iCare and all over Kuwait is a testament to how much one can accomplish with a little compassion and hard work.
From people to places, and our first stop is the Waldorf Astoria Kuwait. This summer they’re treating us to a luxurious escape to a summer paradise complete with poolside escapades, sun-drenched deluxe rooms and suites and phenomenal spa days! We also invite you to rediscover the Shake Shack BBQ menu, we’re so excited that it’s back! And for an extraordinary foray into the world of Turkish cuisine, our favorite Emirgan Sutis celebrates its tenth year in Kuwait, and we even head over to the ever-so-authentic Hatay Sofrasi for an unforgettable breakfast experience! Last but definitely not least, we indulge at Kuwait’s most sought after dining destination, London’s phenomenal Roka!
This issue also invites us to deeply examine our living spaces. As the most important place in your life is your home, the Design Crew at West Elm can help you make it your own sanctuary and personal space. Speaking of sanctuaries, we have watched lifestyle concept ecru grow an incredible community since its inception ten years ago. We catch up with founders Nur, Noor and Hussah as they tell us all about the important role hospitality and sustainable craftsmanship plays at ecru.
Since you’re going to be doing a lot this summer, you need to be dressed to the nines. Get your summer wardrobe ready with Debenhams, with a carefully curated line of summer, resort and beach wear for you and the entire family, you’ll be all set with a single visit. For those of you looking for something more sustainable, we think you need to check out the new Tribe of 6 collection which has been pushing boundaries in a more ethical fashion. So, crank up that AC, put your feet up, and happy reading!

STYLIST STARS
TO THE
Daylal Al-Hajeri is creating trends for us to follow!
Have you been watching the Kuwaiti Netflix shows recently – such as TheCage and TheExchange? Have you noticed how the styling is so on point and that each decade is represented with impeccable detail in terms of fashion? That is the work of Daylal! She has incredible depth when it comes to her styling prowess, and we decided to catch up with her to learn more about what she has done and her process.
Daylal is a fashion stylist, creative director, costume designer, and she has these roles down to an art. She knew she wanted to be in fashion early in life. It was her mother’s wardrobe that was always tempting to her, but probably her mother’s interest in dressing her perfectly was what shaped her passion further. Daylal tells us that her mother “would make a big deal out of my outfit if the accessories weren’t right; she would go out of her way to make each outfit I wear for whatever occasion simply perfect.”
When Daylal was 12, she attended an American school, and it was her mission to style her uniform every semester with different accessories and different designs for her pants or skirts. At that stage she thought she wanted to be a fashion designer, but she found that styling is her passion: “i love the challenge of styling where each person is different and has their own style. I find that each personality can pull off something different in their own way, which makes a stylist’s challenge so much fun.”
Daylal considers fashion to be make or break, and she finds that a person’s sense of fashion tells her a lot about them which she feels affects her work more than any editorial or a designer’s collection. She shares that styling defines her and it’s a big part of her, and therefore she finds inspiration everywhere, even in the mundane. “So, when looking at buildings, art, clothes, or even a wreck I always see something that elevates my work. I like street style and I prefer to mix and clash between different styles. I like a classic look with an edgy twist or a casual attire with an elegant
fabric. I like styles that are not repetitive and not typical. Therefore, when it comes to designers, it depends on the season which one resonates with me. I love it when a designer presents a different collection. That’s why each season I have a different favorite,” she explains.
Although Daylal always knew that she wanted a career in fashion, she had to make an agreement with her father that she would pursue a bachelor’s in finance, which is something that made sense to him, before continuing in fashion. And just like any super smart cookie, she finished her 5-year program in three and a half-years so that she could get started doing what she loved. After doing her masters in fashion, she was working in the public sector by day and as a stylist for Marie Claire Arabia by evening. She also decided to get certified as a media stylist
from London School of Fashion and got her masters in Fashion Merchandising from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She then moved to Los Angeles and again was working two jobs, one as a stylist for Bloomingdale’s and the other as a stylist assistant for Zoe Costello, the Hollywood celebrity stylist. Clearly, she is no stranger to working hard and to making her dreams come true!
Daylal never stops, she keeps going and keeps creating impeccable looks that have us in awe. Recently she has worked on the cover of Elle magazine, the Gucci campaign for GQ magazine, Zain’s Eid TV commercial (which we adore!), and of course, all The Netflix shows among so much more. She tells us that when she was working on The Exchange, she ended up making friends with the older generation in San Francisco and New
York to source items to make sure that everything was real and relatable, from cuff links, to earrings, to sunglasses, and even some clothes. It is a project that she is very proud of.
We are so awed by all the fabulous styles she is creating and transporting us to different seasons and decades. However, it hasn’t always been easy for her. Daylal shares that “10 years ago in Kuwait it was very hard to pursue a career and degree in fashion. I went through tough battles and sacrifices and difficult decisions to be where I am today. I did it all to serve as an inspiration for other girls to follow their passion. I like to think that I have paved the way for them, but I believe that whether it’s fashion or any other career, love what you do with all your heart, and you will reach places you never dreamed of.” We love this advice!

10 YEARS OF ECRU!
I, without a shadow of a doubt, live for those full-circle moments. Precious conversations which linger long in the back of my mind, or fleeting moments spent gazing at ecru’s handcrafted heirlooms at Dar Al Funoon for the brand’s first-ever Pop Up ten years ago. It truly felt like it was only yesterday when I first spoke with Nur Kaoukji about ecru, a Kuwait and Jaipurbased lifestyle brand that prides itself on the art of the handmade.
ecru visually illustrates tales of growing up in Kuwait. A collective experience of hospitality. How the smell of Turkish coffee brewing marked the arrival of guests, and the clattering sound of pretty gahwa cups being readied on gorgeous trays set the tone for scintillating conversations with loved ones.
Inspired by the ethos and culture of Arab hospitality, ecru’s founders Nur Kaoukji, Noor Al Sabah, and Hussah Al Tamimi believe that beautiful objects can elevate our daily rituals, especially when prepared by the caring hands of knowing, respected artisans from around the world. It is this deeply entrenched ethos that has launched ecru from Kuwait to the world, and it’s been a riveting journey since day one. Each and every collection from ecru narrates a personal tale from the lives of its founders, and in celebrating this ten-year milestone, a pop-up in true ecru fanfare was in order.
Held at Sadu House’s immaculate grounds, the setting was absolutely perfect for ecru’s Retrospect Pop-Up, as the space pays a lasting homage to Kuwait’s true artisans. Along with the knowing eyes of Art Director and Visual Artist Deborah DiFiore, Retrospect arrived as an awe-inspiring curation. With recent pandemic-related interruptions (I’ve been really good at selectively blocking this out), I realized that it’s been a long while since I’ve set eyes on ecru’s gorgeous homewares, and more importantly, I was overjoyed just being surrounded by the founders’ collective energies. Noor was overjoyed, stating how it’s been five years since the last ecru Pop-Up, “It’s been actually quite an honor to do a pop up after five years, to connect with our clients after being behind a screen for so long. For us, reaching out personally is at the heart of what we do, it’s hospitality. And hospitality means getting to know somebody personally, and so being around our client base has been wonderful.”
The atmosphere was joyous, the displays divine, and the sheer sense of happiness could be felt the moment you set foot inside the PopUp’s space.
By bazaar StaffA dazzling exhibition of ten key pieces from the past ten years surrounded the entire space, from the iconic Palm Cloche, and Star Coupes from ecru’s glassware to the unforgettable hand-made
Pop-up *Retro*Spect* at Sadu House marked a review and reflection of the local lifestyle brand that continues to capture the hearts and minds of creatives across the globe
Brass Candlesticks, a firm favorite of mine since they first launched. Noor counts the Multicolored glasses in fanciful brights with palm etching as her favorite. She explained, “I think a lot of homeware has become very serious. So I think bringing in a little bit of fun with the different colors invites us to be more playful in our homes. I think it’s quite fun. So that would be my favorite for sure. It was even a fun process creating them, from choosing the colors and working with the artisans to getting the perfect tones. It was a fun process for us.”
Gorgeous block-printed placemats, table cloths, and napkins showcased ecru’s appreciation for natural textiles, and heirlooms crafted out of wood, marble, and alabaster delighted the eye. A small saunter around leads you into a smaller space, where an ode to ecru’s telling eye for fashion was in full swing. Stunning block-printed dresses feature in a vibrant display of colors, shedding light on the brand’s deeply entrenched passion for the handmade.
I will never forget how Nur first described “ecru” to me, linen in its purest and initial form. It served as the base of all of its designs and continues to inspire its ever-growing following today. Growing communities beyond the region is important to the founders, as Noor’s dream is to “create our worlds with Pop-Ups around the world. And if we could do that, and share this experience elsewhere, the same way that it’s given us a community in Kuwait, that would be our greatest dream.” Here’s to the next ten years, ecru.

AND LET THEM EAT CAKE!
Dia Daou is making all our cake fantasies come to life
By bazaar StaffNo party is ever complete without cake, be it cupcakes, a tiered cake, or just a simple sponge. Cake is what makes a celebration a celebration – you see the gasps when a wedding cake is rolled out, or the twinkle in a child’s eye when their fabulous birthday cake is sparkling with candles. If you can’t tell, we love cake. And we especially love the gorgeous (and amazingly delicious) cakes by Dia.
Dia is a Lebanese expat living in K-town, a happy wife and a mother of three. She is an MBA holder and a former Marketeer who (as a Mother) found passion in party planning at first and began a cake journey by accident later. She founded @idias_kuwait, an Instagram page that was initially created to provide party “ideas” and DIY tips from party décor, balloon art, table setups and more. However, the area where she always struggled was the cakes that she used to order; she was never satisfied with in terms of color and finishing.
This is when Dia started to experiment herself. She tells us “I called my Mom (who happens to be a great chef and baker) and I asked her whether she knew what fondant was and whether she knew how to make it. I then asked her to bake me a cake and to send me the fondant
along with it. Since then, she was the one baking, and I only decorated. Later I had to borrow her own recipe book and began experimenting and this is how my baking journey started. It’s crucial to mention that my first 100 cakes (that I baked for my family and kids) were a total failure. My first ever decent cake was the one I baked and decorated for my daughter on her 7th birthday where I had a full table of homemade birthday treats alongside that matched her birthday theme.” Through perseverance, Dia not only found success, but a passion.
It was on that day that all of her friends were impressed and kept asking her where she ordered the goodies from. One of her first ever supporters and close friend Catia recommended that she do this for a living. Dia didn’t take her friend seriously until she started planning Catia’s daughter’s birthday and then word of mouth took over. It was in 2017 that Dia started her Instagram page and posting every cake that she baked, even if it was just for friends and family on the weekends. Slowly, she found herself more and more immersed. “I started it for fun, not for any personal gain or praise but for the joy my work brought to kids. Cake art then became an addiction, and I couldn’t get enough. I was surprised with how quickly I was evolving and with increasing demand from friends and friends of friends, I had to quit my job as a Marketing Manager and decided to take this art seriously,” Dia shares.
Dia’s passion is not only catching, but it is what keeps her going. Dia shares that “having a passion for anything in life is what differentiates people from one another. My passion for baking and decorating cakes ignited a desire to learn, to experiment with cake decorating and to keep up with the trends in this ever-growing industry. Baking wasn’t something I ever thought I would do for a living. And although my Mom is a great chef and baker, it never occurred to me that one day I’ll be fulfilling her dream. Here’s where it all started. I had to resort to my mom to learn cake recipes and I’ve been experimenting with cake art ever since.”
The name of Dia’s business is an ode to her creative side and her playfulness. It is a mix of the word ‘ideas’ (she was initially sharing party ideas) and her name, Dia, and also a nod to the technical era – iPad, iPhone, etc. And her husband’s name also starts with the letter I – we just love the story!
Dia doesn’t want to set in stone her future plans too much, she prefers staying fluid and just seeing where her passion takes her. However, the plan of having an all-in-one bakery/birthday venue/coffee shop where kids can celebrate and enjoy their big day while parents can peacefully chill and enjoy her fresh bakes is exciting to her. She does however hope to start a Baking Academy someday.

SHE’S HORRIBLE!
“All you need is love, love, love” – The Beatles
By Rasha EzzeddineI keep talking about women’s empowerment and celebrating women – but sadly, there is a whole line of women that are well, just not doing that – especially in the workplace. Women bullies are on the rise (some studies say 35% of women report women bullying in the workplace), very disappointing considering the age we live in and negates all the efforts for equality at work. serving the notion that women are incapable of handling power/leadership on a silver platter. So, why do they do it? Is someone subconsciously asking for it? How do they decide whom to target?
Is it a survival response to the man’s world? Is it the need to announce, ‘I made it here where no other woman could’? Is it a feel-good mechanism? Were they victims, and they now feel this is the way to create a stronger generation? What do they get out of it? I am no expert, but after 20+ years of work, I have seen personalities and things I cannot undo – but I think they all just need some love. I’ve decided to talk about this differently – over the years, I have split them into 4 categories:
The Lonely Genius
As far as bullies go – this is my ‘favorite’ bully (i.e.: the one I empathize with the most). She’s smart, she’s efficient, she’s a workaholic, she’s even inspirational and leaves you awed by her
output – yet, no one, absolutely no one lives up to her expectations. So, she’s frustrated, she’s snappy, she gives attitude, she shouts, making you feel like you’re useless, she always highlights how you’re letting her down – she cannot work with anyone, and everyone is walking on eggshells around her. She puts leaders in a compromising situation; they know her strengths, but they lose so much keeping her on. I empathize with this bully because all it boils down to, is she’s not heard, she’s a perfectionist, and she just wants to get things done with the best output. In fact, I feel the most sorry for this bully, because in some strange way she has somehow bullied herself into loneliness and creates a community of women united against her that she never intended, she
can’t be part of – whilst her only desire is to improve things and belong to something amazing that she created.
The Snake
This is the bully that I despise. This one is pretty, sleek, shiny. She has social know how, she is smart, she’s efficient, intelligent, into all things girlie, a lady, you might even say a damsel in distress. She can talk the talk and hypnotize you into her reality – heck, you’re ready to fight wars for her. This bully is the most venomous one because she’s so sweet, she causes decay and will not be satisfied until everything is destroyed around her and leaving only herself to shine – or at least that’s the objective. She’s an entitled
gold digger, a constant victim, a compulsive liar, an artist of manipulation – she will fool all of us. Her bullying is the worst kind: the mental kind; it’s not physical or verbal, and it’s done in the sweetest of ways but oh so slyly spreading poison and hate that has detrimental and toxic consequences in the workplace. It’s not all bad because this bully has an Achilles heel, and that’s her venomous split tongue. She talks too much and with too many people, who eventually talk together and reveal her reality. These bullies tend to be abandoned somehow or at some point in their lives, or they have a very controlling parental figure; they crave popularity and want to always be saved yet never want to help anyone. Their response? Divide and conquer.
Beauty and the Beast
This is the bully that fascinates me the most and probably creates the most work trauma. She’s a powerful yet oh so elegant beast. She scares you in the same way she seduces you. She has charisma, she has style, she is ‘The Devil Wears [insert any luxurious brand]’. Yes – this bully is immaculate, in the most luxurious of brands and knows the ins and outs of society, you look up to her, you want to be her – but hell hath no fury like this bully; this is the one that creates a shivering weasel out of all of us. This one has reach, she has power, she will turn your life upside down, she will turn an entire country against you (beyond corporate walls). If she doesn’t like you at work, she will call you names, she will demean you, she will get everyone at to talk about you and if you’re a man, she castrates you emotionally and psychologically. Yet, she magically has all your keys and knows how to soften you like a hot knife to butter and make you think you’re imagining it all. This fascinating beast has probably had her heart broken in more ways than we can count, she has so much she wants to prove and say to the world, and so much good she wants everyone to see, but for one reason or another the very society she understands so well, keeps slapping and stabbing her in the back – so she takes it out on everyone that doesn’t courtesy at her presence and to her demands. Look behind the curtains and you will see that this beast is just Belle: responsibilities, a big heart, carrying a load that we can’t even see to protect loved ones and goes beyond borders to help…this can include the same people she’s destroying at work.
The Idiot
If any bully is going to make a bully out of me it’s The Idiot. Oh, the confidence the idiot has. The idiot makes more mistakes than we can count, costs the organization money and other reputational losses, financial or in resource. The idiot believes that they are divine and untouchable, demeans your roots/origin/ experience. The Idiot uses race, brands, or other materialistic things to try and highlight
your ‘unworthiness’ in their presence. The idiot makes me reconsider my stand against violence. What’s her story? Well, that’s just it – she knows she doesn’t have what it takes and covers her insecurity with overconfidence. Rather than invest and improve herself or know where to draw the lines, she takes those lines and uses them to attack as a form or defence “hey these are my lines – don’t get near me.” The idiot is horrible because she surprises and hurts you with the awful personal (but so very public) attacks, she makes you question management for tolerating her detrimental mistakes, she makes you hate coming to work and forget there is a thing called humanity and ethics all because she knows her weaknesses but wants to create a new strength – more often than not, she’s from a privileged background hence the confidence and lack of accountability for her actions. She has also lost a lot from her mistakes and is surrounded by opportunists (because of her privileged background) so has lost her own faith in people.
So, I guess it’s starting to sound like I’m saying
they all need some love – and in many ways that’s what this boils down to. Now – don’t rush to hug the bully out of them but just take a step back to acknowledge that it’s THEIR issues with THEIR own lives, and mismanagement and confrontation with their feelings and the reality (ironic considering they confront everything else!). It has nothing to do with you or whoever is at the receiving end. I hope you take power in that. Maybe we should be grateful to them – they create immunity and a community against them and remind us of our collective strength. They’re horrible – but you’re stronger, and you have something they don’t even know they want and so they take it out on you. Shock them by showing them some love.

KUWAITI GRADUATE FROM CARNEGIE MELLON QATAR LEADS WOMEN’S FOOTBALL IN HISTORIC SUCCESS
Kuwait’s Sara AlKhaled leads as captain and coach in historic back-to-back wins in Qatar
By bazaar StaffThe Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) Women’s Football Team have finished off a historic season with back-to-back wins in inter-university tournaments led by Sara, who is graduating with a degree in Business Administration from CMU-Q, a Qatar Foundation Partner University.
“I played football as soon as I was old enough to kick a ball. I played in my grandmother’s backyard and in P.E. class. Any chance I could get, I wanted to play football,” said Sara, who joined the team in 2019 when she was a first-year student at CMU-Q.
After the pandemic put team sports on hiatus in Qatar’s Education City, the team came back together in August. This was also during Sara’s final year at the university. Looking back, she knew that she could get the job done, saying “This was
the first time I captained a team. We had a hard time finding a coach, so I decided that I was up for that challenge.” Serving as both the captain and the coach of the team, she was on a mission to put women’s sports at CMU-Q on the map.
Sara already knew what the priority was in terms of obstacles to tackle. “We had to find ways to increase engagement. Some team members didn’t see the potential in themselves and so we worked with them and I am so proud of how each member rose to the challenge,” she said looking back at the accomplishments.
The team took part in the Qatar Foundation Student Life tournament and fought their way to the first victory for a CMU-Q Women’s Team in campus history. That was just the beginning of
their success as they went on to win the Education City Women’s Football Championship in a very close final match against Georgetown.
“This was a celebration of women’s athletics. We also played the American University of Afghanistan, who just moved to Education City and only recently formed a team. All of us who played felt a huge sense of teamwork and togetherness,” added Sara.
Sara graduated from CMU-Q in May and plans to return to Kuwait. “I can’t express how bittersweet it is to graduate. Kuwait is my home, but I will miss CMU-Q so much. The football success was the cherry on top of my undergraduate experience,” concluded Sara.
DISCOVER AUTHENTIC ROBATAYAKI VIBES AT ROKA
Gather with your loved ones around ROKA’s Robata grill, and let the good times roll
By bazaar StaffKuwait’s hospitality scene needs no introduction. Long renowned for its flourishing gastronomic landscape, diners in Kuwait enjoy a sophisticated palate for elevated flavors and a dazzling atmosphere to match. Name the cuisine, and we can list at least several phenomenal restaurants to match your craving. When it comes to contemporary Japanese dining, however, we believe that ROKA is carving for itself a unique, inimitable space amongst Kuwait’s premiere dining destinations.
ROKA has been gaining quite a loyal following since opening its doors to local diners last fall and for a good reason, as the menu at ROKA is peppered with cult classics like from the flaming grill including kankoku fu kohitsuji (lamb cutlets with Korean spices and sesame cucumber) and the famous bekupoteto (baked potato with yuzu cream and chives) yet is constantly refreshed with specials such as the sublime King Crab salad with sweetcorn, and chilli lemon dressing. Pair these incredible flavor profiles with a transformative ambiance, and you’ve got yourself a destination worth visiting with friends and loved ones, time and time again.
Following its successful chain of openings in the UAE and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait
arrived as a natural next step for ROKA founders Chef Rainer Becker and his business partner Arjun Waney. True to its name, ROKA Kuwait offers an intimate experience for guests to socialize and share exceptional food and drinks (Ro) while heat, warmth, and energy emanate throughout the space, as successfully achieved by the restaurant’s unique Robatayaki experience (Ka). Visiting ROKA in Kuwait is a transcendent experience, in and of itself. Located in the country’s glorious Waldorf Astoria, and enjoying a direct connection to Kuwait’s The Avenues shopping locale, the restaurant is marked by its own private entrance with a captivating floral lobby downstairs that has amassed its own
social media fanbase. And while we appreciated the incredibly beautiful floral entrance, the moment of arrival inside the restaurant delivered an unforgettable, cocooning warmth, thanks to the energetic welcome from the expert chefs performing their craft at the Robata Grill.
Considered the heart and soul of ROKA, you can settle in around the Robata and witness the culinary theater unfold before your eyes. Paying homage to the traditional Japanese cooking method inspired by fishermen cooking fish over charcoal on the boats of the Northern coastal waters of Japan and sharing the days catch with their fellows, you can gather around and share in the experience with your loved ones, or let your eyes dance toward the stunning sushi counter, along with an open concept dessert counter; both adding to the one-of-a-kind experience that is exclusive to ROKA Kuwait.
We absolutely loved the restaurant’s chic, edgy interiors. Designed by Noriyoshi Muramatsu, ROKA is dominated by a modern Industrial feel, with high, exposed ceilings and earthy concrete brick wall finishes. These raw design elements are juxtaposed by a sleekness experienced in the modern floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing Kuwat’s vibrant skyline, the semi-private and private dining enclaves, and the nature-inspired allure of the lush wall of greenery.
Choosing where to be seated was a privilege for us, as ROKA is usually booked up in advance, and while so many diners opted to enjoy the city views, we wanted to experience the beating heart of the restaurant, the Robata Grill, and sat at the smooth teak wood tables with our chairs directly watching the experts firing up the Robata and plating immaculate dishes.
We began our foray with a taste of ROKA’s refreshing mocktails, a stimulating Ginger Ninja drink that has all the makings of an Asian-inspired Mojito with a twist, as well as the fragrant White Lotus. A sweet scintillation of dragon fruit, lychee, and strawberry, all rounded up beautifully with the citrus kick of yuzu.
Before we dove deep into ROKA’s delectable robata creations, we had to try their signature sushi and sashimi selections. We adored the fresh flavors presented in the mixed sashimi platter, and this is where we appreciated ROKA’s approach. Less is more. With a focus on quality ingredients and balancing the flavors of each plate created, we loved how the Yellowtail sashimi with yuzu-truffle dressing offered a hit of the sea, elevated by the punch of the yuzu, truffle medley. We also sampled the dainamaito maki from ROKA’s specials, an ode to Kuwait’s love for spicy chili shrimp tempura. This maki jumpstarted our tastebuds, a warm prelude to ROKA’s grilled specialties, which we couldn’t wait to dive into.
From the Robata’s flaming coals came the sea bream fillet with ryotei miso and red onion. Every element of this dish served its purpose, as the red onion beautifully offset the richness of the fish.
Alongside the sea bream fillet, we were lucky to try the perfectly grilled beef fillet with chill, ginger, and spring onion and the iconic ROKA baked potato with yuzu cream, bekupoteto.
Dessert was a showstopping experience, as we were dazzled by the ROKA dessert platter. An artful display of the chef’s selection of ROKA’s must-have desserts served with fresh exotic fruits, gorgeous tropical sorbets, and of course, the iconic dark chocolate and green tea pudding with crunchy jivara and pear ice cream. Also making a lasting impression on our taste buds
is ROKA’s latest creation, the pecan alaska, a warm tree cake with pecan ice cream, the softest, chewiest meringue, butterscotch miso sauce, and fresh banana. A strange, unexpected symphony of flavors, reminded us of a classic banana pudding yet reinvented, and the soft sponge cake encasing the rich ice cream is actually prepared in ROKA’s fiery clay oven. It was a sight to observe this incredibly unique dessert come to life!
Here to solidify its place amongst Kuwait’s roster of faultless dining destinations, we appreciated how ROKA is on a constant journey
to elevate the pleasure of robatayaki cuisine with creativity at the heart of its operation. Whether you choose to indulge in their immaculate presentation of sushi and sashimi creations or standout dishes from the robata grill and decadent desserts, ROKA will surely impress.
ROKA is located at Waldorf Astoria Kuwait with valet parking available on-site for easy access. For reservations, please call + 965 2477 4410, visit rokarestaurant.com and follow @RokaKuwaitOfficial on Instagram for their latest updates.
PROMENADE ICE SKATING TEAM EXCELS AT SKATE EMIRATES
The team celebrates bringing home 18 medals
By bazaar StaffThe Promenade Ice Skating Team has had us all in awe with their exemplary performances in skating competitions over the last few years – and of course, this year their participation in Skate Emirates 2023 was no different. The team of 15 skaters brought home 18 medals and stunned audiences in Al Ain – adding to the trophy cabinet that already has a plethora of medal wins and trophies from international competitions!
The team, led by Coach Nurul Ayinie Sulaeman, had stiff competition from other teams from the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Egypt, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Romania, Hungary, Kazakhstan, and Georgia.
In the run up to the competition, the coaches of the Promenade Ice Skating Team worked closely with the team in preparing them for the grueling challenges ahead, often including endless hours of practice. However, the coaches have even more work to do behind the scenes! They prepare the programs of all the team members, prepare the music, work with them to finalize the outfits and ensure that all the competition rules have been reviewed.
The coaches and team become like family members before a competition, the team lives and breathes ice skating, and the coaches give calm and endless support, and encourage the skaters to work harder toward their goals! They also have to push the team to perform to the best of their ability, often through the nerves that the girls may feel before the competition.
This year at Skate Emirates, the 15 skaters worked closely together to showcase their talents at the competition to teams from around the world! Some newer skaters were supported closely by
the veterans on the team, those that have been participating in competitions for a while. This level of teamwork where there is strong guidance from every front is where the high level of coaching shines at Promenade Ice. It is a team that has gelled together and bonded from the guidance of the coaches.
One of the skaters, Rania Baweja, aged 13, told us “I really enjoyed the team work, cooperation and support Promenade Ice team and others have given me.” Another skater, Noor Al Anezi, aged 9, shared “What I love the most is how we became close to each other, helping each one of the team. We are family here at the Promenade Ice Team!”
The coaches at Promenade Ice pride themselves on ensuring that they extract the best out of the team and instill a passion for the sport that is so close to their hearts! Laila Roshdy, aged showcases this exactly as she expresses her love for her team: “I enjoyed Skate Emirates a lot but my favorite thing about being part of the team and competing is spending time with my friends and cheering them on.”
Kenzie El Adly, aged 13, who has been part of the team for a while tells us that she enjoys the competitions because “I get to connect to my team and I love supporting and cheering everyone
on when we are there!” We are so excited to hear that the team has such a great sportsman spirit – this is a special gift that the team will be able to cherish as long as they live.
We love what Alzain Hamshari, aged 12, explains: “As a figure skater, this sport changed my life, pushing me to new limits both physically and mentally. At Skate Emirates I won both gold and silver medals, thank you team and the coaches for all that you have done for me, both on and off ice. I am proud to be a part of such an incredible team.”
We’ve always been fans of Promenade Ice, the safety of the rink, the caliber of the coaches, and support of the management in achieving great wins and harnessing talent of the youth. If you’re as impressed by the team and would like to try your hand at skating, then this is the place to be! Promenade Ice will also be running skating camps this summer for all levels.
To find out more about what is going on at Promenade Ice, you can give them a call for more information on 2227 7138. Or you can follow the activities of the Promenade Ice Skating Team and find out more information about the rink by following them on Instagram @promenadeicekw.

the On-Off Home, it’s really about people’s needs and dreams and wishes but also about their frustrations. Our aim has been to understand what the people want and provide solutions, not about selling individual products. That isn’t the success of IKEA. It’s more about focusing on what are your individual needs for your specific living situation and how can we help you have a more sustainable and organized life? Of course, all of this within a more affordable context.
“Today, we are here to celebrate with you the opening of the unique IKEA Al Khiran, our fourth physical customer meeting point in Kuwait. It is our first IKEA in the south, but not the last. As you all know, we will open soon an IKEA store in The Warehouse Mall, in Subahiya. Both are key milestones in our strategic expansion plan in Kuwait, following all the amazing new developments of Kuwait and our vision to create a better everyday life for the many people”, continued Maganto.
Affordability is one of the key pillars of IKEA globally, which is working to make its operations more efficient to continue lowering prices, beyond the constraints of the current global economic situation. “This is one of the main long-term commitments we made with the people of Kuwait. With IKEA Al Khiran we continue to reach more people to be able to continue lowering our prices”, added Maganto.
“Our values play a significant role in our people’s strategy. We continuously develop our people to be the next generation of IKEA leaders and specialists with individualized plans that will allow them to grow with IKEA in Kuwait and abroad. We want our teams to grow with us for the long term. Our coworkers have the opportunity to work for a company with a strong culture and values, like honesty, humbleness, leadership by example, or togetherness and enthusiasm”, explained Maganto.
“All these values, in combination with a passion for retail and customer service, contribute towards building the IKEA brand. A brand that sides with the many; a brand that is humble and willing to learn and reinvent itself constantly, while at the same time remaining close, human, and down to earth,” said Maganto.
“I am convinced that IKEA Al Khiran will be a source of inspiration and joy for all our visitors. STAGED IN KUWAIT TURNS UP THE RAZZLE DAZZLE
The American Vaudeville Musical, Chicago, live on stage for the first time in Kuwait
By bazaar StaffStep into the glitz and glamour of the 1920s with Staged in Kuwait this month, as they present the iconic musical “Chicago” to end their eleventh season. Come be swept away by this timeless masterpiece presented live on stage, at the beautiful American United School Performing Arts Center in Sabah Al Salem.
“Chicago” traces its origins back to the true events of the 1920s, a time defined by jazz, prohibition, and a city pulsating with crime and corruption. Inspired by the captivating trials of two murderesses, the original play was written by Maurine Dallas Watkins and debuted on Broadway in 1926.
Fast forward to the 1970s, when director and choreographer Bob Fosse, along with lyricist Fred Ebb and composer John Kander, (of “Cabaret” fame), revived “Chicago” as a musical. With Fosse’s visionary choreography and a dazzling score, the show burst back onto the Broadway stage in 1975, reimagined for a new era. It captured the essence of the Jazz Age and delved into the dark underbelly of Chicago’s crime-ridden society, seducing audiences with its sizzling dance numbers and unforgettable characters.
The success of the Broadway revival paved the way for a remarkable film adaptation in 2002. Directed by Rob Marshall, the star-studded cast, including Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Richard Gere, brought the captivating story to the silver screen. With its stunning visuals and mesmerizing performances, the film became a cinematic sensation. At the 2003 Academy Awards, the film was nominated for a record twelve Oscars. It took home six, including Best
Picture, cementing the musical’s status as a cultural phenomenon, and spreading its influence and popularity beyond the stage.
This month, (following the sellout end-ofseason production of “Mamma Mia!” in 2022), the talented theater community at Staged in Kuwait is excited to bring “CHICAGO” live to the stage in Kuwait, for the first time ever.
Staged in Kuwait is a theater community dedicated to producing and showcasing theatrical performances and bringing the magic of live theater to audiences in the region. JUNE MUSIC
Start your summer with some great tracks!
Title: Smoke
Artist: Caroline Polachek
Album: Desire, I Want to Turn Into You
Caroline Polachek is a talent on her way up and this song will only help in her rise. A good cruising song in the car, and one that will most probably make your list if you’re also a fan of music along the same lines such as Dido.
Title: Prime
Artist: Daft Punk
Album: Random Access Memories (10th Anniversary Edition)
Daft Punk has given us all a trip down memory lane with their 10th anniversary edition album of Random Access Memories which includes some classics and a couple new unreleased songs, such as Prime. Definitely a contender for one of the songs to be played on repeat!
Title: The Formula
Artist: Will.I.Am, Lil Wayne
Album: N/A
What happens when you put Will.I.Am and Lil Wayne on a track together? Well, check for yourself and don’t expect to be disappointed. Two legends in the music scene give us a song for the ages.
Title: Hotline (Edit)
Artist: Billie Eillish
Album: N/A
Keep it short, sweet, and slow with Billie Eillish who has a voice that can get your whole body to relax and give in to the music. The only criticism to this song is that it’s too short with it just being one-minute long.
Title: Boat
Artist: Ed Sheeran
Album: Subtract
Ed Sheeran continues to increase his legendary status on the music scene with his latest album, Subtract. The full album is definitely worth a listen but if you’re a fan of his slower songs focused on the lyrics and vocals, then Boat is the song for you.
Title: Secret Measure
Artist: Cloth
Album: Secret Measure
Rhythmic, low, and a song that can be used to start your day slowly but also get you a little bit into the groove. Secret Measure is down on the list as a must-listen and Cloth is an artist that you may hear a lot more of in the future!

PERFECT VACATION HAIR
Get that fresh-out-of-the-salon look using the Revlon One-Step Volumizer Plus Salon and these top tips
By bazaar Staff“Pics or it didn’t happen” is a phrase that seems to describe the zeitgeist, especially when it comes to vacations. Whether you are standing in front of the Eiffel Tower or suntanning in the Maldives, flawless hair can make or break your shot. Beautiful coiffed, salon-worthy bouncy locks are accessible even during vacation. Nothing compares to the insane volume, beautiful curls and silky shine that you can achieve with the right products and technique using the Revlon Volumizer PLUS. It even comes with a detachable head, so you can easily pack it in your bags.
Your hair’s greatest BFF, is a blow dry, a styling process where you apply hot air to damp hair using a hairdryer or blow dry brush. Great for every hair type, a bouncy blow dry at home can transform your look in under 20 minutes, leaving hair soft, silky and frizz-free. It’s a look that just can’t be achieved by air drying alone!
Step 1: Rough-Dry First
Drying your hair when it’s still soaking wet not only takes ages, but also uses unnecessary heat. We suggest towel-drying your hair first to remove excess water and detangling with a comb or brush. Remember, your hair should still be slightly damp after this step. You don’t want it fully dry yet!
Step 2: Part and Section Your Hair
Our top tip for the ultimate bouncy blow dry at home? Splitting your hair into smaller sections makes achieving your salon-worthy look much easier. Start by finding your parting with the tailend of a comb for even volume distribution. As you start drying, it might help to divide the hair into smaller sections from ear to ear.
Step 3: Start Drying
Now that your hair is parted, it’s time to start drying. Select the high setting for thick hair and the low setting for thin hair. Take your blow dry brush (the Revlon One-Step Volumizer Plus is a great choice!) and begin drying. Blow dry each section by lifting hair from the root and wrapping it around the barrel. Gently pull through the hair, alternating between different angles towards the ends for a fuller, bouncier look. To create longlasting, voluminous curls, pin each section to the top of the head. Leave to cool completely, then release the hair to reveal beautifully natural curls. Repeat this motion on the remaining sections until the desired look is achieved. Our famous One-Step Volumizer Plus blow dry brush has 4 heat settings for ultimate styling flexibility and control, which is exactly what you need for a salon-worthy blow dry.
Step
4: Style Ends
Roll the round blow dry brush inwards at the bottom of each section of hair and slowly unravel to set a perfect, smooth curl. Continue this technique on all sections to create a beautiful bouncy blow dry that frames the face.
Step 5: Finish with a Cool Shot
Once you’re happy with the look, finish off with our cool shot setting for styling flexibility. A crucial step in how to blow dry hair for volume, the cool shot will set the shape created, frame your face, and close the cuticle for a smooth, frizz-free finish.
Step 6: Style It Out and Lock It In
After all your hard-work and determination, you don’t want it going anywhere! Always make sure to lock your fresh, bouncy blow dry in place with
a few styling products. Add a touch of texturizing spray for extra volume and follow with hairspray to lock your look in place. Now you know how to blow dry hair for the perfect salon-worthy look, that voluminous shine is right at your fingertips!

A DECADE OF DELIGHTFUL TURKISH DINING WITH EMIRGAN SUTIS
Our top 10 picks from to celebrate 10 years of Kuwait’s Turkish go-to destination!
By bazaar StaffThanks to the Ottoman empire’s growth and expansion, hundreds of years ago, Turkish cuisine is one that most of us in the Middle East and Kuwait are quite familiar with, whether you’ve visited Turkey or not. The ingredients are rich and techniques can be meticulous and borne out of a labor of love. And we’ve been satisfying our cravings right here in Kuwait by heading to Emirgan Sutis at The Avenues since 2013.
This year marks the restaurant’s ten-year anniversary and we’re taking a stroll down our own gastronomical memory lane. The story starts in Batum, Georgia with two men; Hacı Mehmet Aga, who was famed for his cakes and pastries and Sütçü Ahmet, who was renowned for his milky desserts. Mevlüt Kocadag, the former’s grandson and the latter’s son-in-law left the family business in 1953 to establish the very first Sütis shop in Nisantası. Half a century later, Sütis had become one of the most famous milk pudding shops in Istanbul after opening in Taksim, in addition to the Nisantası branch in 1982. Four years later, the first official “Emirgan Sütis” restaurant was opened in the Emirgan neighborhood overlooking the Bosphorus. Since 2013, instead of needing to board a
plane to Istanbul to embark on a culinary adventure we just headed to Emirgan Sutis. To celebrate ten years of deliciouslness we’re sharing our favorite ten Sutis dining moments!
BREAKFAST
The restaurant is famed for their all-day dining. Starting with breakfast, which can be deceptively simple, but always delicious and fulfilling. Moderation is for people who have never experienced a Sutis breakfast. And the most important thing is to always end the feast with a cup of Traditional Turkish Tea.
1 Borek
When eating out in the morning at a Turkish restaurant, one always orders borek stuffed
with spinach or meat (often both and more-often ordering seconds). Börek or burek are a family of pastries that are made of a thin flaky dough such as filo with a variety of fillings. And while the dish can be found in the Balkans, Middle East and Central Asia, but they all compare to Turkish borek and Sutis makes fabulous ones.
2 Menemen Eggs
And of course we can’t forget the Menemen scrambled egg dish. Think of it like Shakshouka’s cousin, with menemen, it is more of a soft egg scramble with lots of silky green peppers and fresh tomato. Crunchy, fresh and the perfect way to fuel up in the morning. To make it an even fancier affair order some Stuffed Simit to add some carbs and happiness to the meal.
LUNCH AND DINNER
If we are visiting for lunch or dinner, we make sure we either skip breakfast altogether or arrive with a healthy appetite because it would just be wrong to not indulge in as many delicious dishes as we humanly can. We always bring a friend or three, so we can order more main dishes because sharing food is the ultimate form of caring.
3 Mezzes and Dips
We might be slightly cheating here but we think of a spread of dips as one item because you need more than one, and at Emirgan Sutis you will be spoiled for choice. From the bright pink Sultan Sauce to the authentically spiced Dolma, and the Hummus Doner to the Kebbeh Sageya, we love it all!
4 Doner Wrap
There are lots of colorful salads to start with, which we definitely encourage you to try but we’re here for something more substantial. We love the Doner Wrap, lavash bread stuffed with doner meat, tomatoes, pickles, served with French fries and tomato sauce. It’s just like enjoying the street-food version in the streets of Istanbul.
5 Kabab Options
Usually when we go to Emirgan Sutis we’re there for the decadent main dishes. All kabab dishes at Sutis are excellent, perfectly balanced and spiced to perfection. They’ve carefully created several options to suit every palate and even offer a vegetarian option. We’re huge fans of the Iskander Kabab, which is doner kebab served on
pita bread with butter, yogurt and tomato sauce. Kuzu Lokum, is also another fan-favorite with grilled round sliced lamb loin served with sautéed and vegetables spinach, french fries or baked potato, and your choice of white rice or bulgur. Our vegetarian friends can join the fun too with the flavorsome Eggplant Kabab, which is served with onions, grilled tomato, chili, french fries, and your choice of bulgur, white rice, baked potato or French fries.
DRINKS
Some people think that you should only drink water, we respectfully disagree. Life needs exciting options. Fresh and fruity drinks are aplenty at Emirgan Sutis.
6 Fresh Pomegranate Juice
Sutis offers some fantastic beverages like the Fresh Pomegranate Juice, a tangy and nutritious drink made from hand-pressed pomegranates for a burst of flavor in every sip.
7 Aryan Yogurt Drink
If you’ve ever visited Turkey, you will have been offered this tasty treat of a beverage. Turkey’s favorite drink, the Ayran Yogurt Drink With Mint, can help you start off the meal or help you end it. Whatever you choose, there’s no argument that it is highly refreshing and quite unique to the cuisine.
DESSERT
You know how we started off by making sure you have planned ahead? Well, now is the time it pays off. Because you should have some room left for dessert. Because no one does Turkish desserts in K-town like Emirgan Sutis. It’s a feast for the senses, visually with perfectly plated portions, the unrivaled crunch of freshly made baklava and tastebud heave.
8 Havuc Dilimi with Donderma
This traditional Turkish pastry is made with layers of phyllo dough, filled with pistachio nuts and sweetened with syrup. Then baked until golden and crispy and then split open and filled with delicious Turkish ice cream, donderma. It’s a match made in food heaven.
9 Rice Pudding
Every Middle Eastern kid has had a rice pudding, probably lovingly made by grandma or mom. Get ready to rethink this humble dessert because Sutis have taken it to a new level. Prepared with Turkish Buffalo think cream Kaymak and milk, rice, egg freshly prepared in the traditional Turkish way.
10 Baklava Mix
We always recommend the mix to our friends who want it all, or find it challenging to pick only one thing. There’s no way you can go wrong with a fabulous selection of differently flavored baklava.
By now you should be feeling blissful and probably stuffed, but that’s no reason to go home yet. End on a high-note with some Turkish coffee, or freshly brewed tea with mint and sit back and enjoy the fact that sometimes the best journeys in life are the ones shared with loved ones, right here in Kuwait.

WOODEN BAKERY: BEYOND BREAKFAST & BRUNCH!
We came to feast, yet we left with endless treats for the entire office!
By bazaar StaffWith two dine-in locations in Kuwait, you can’t help but feel charmed by Wooden Bakery’s ambiance. We’ve held several editorial meetings at their Salmiya location, the outdoor seating area always delivers inimitable flânerie vibes. You simply just want to while away the afternoons, street gazing while sipping on an Iced Americano paired with a yummy Zaatar mankousheh. With its recent flagship location in Jabriya, however, we’re here to state on the record that there’s definitely more than meets the eye than Wooden Bakery’s iconic Windmill, which will immediately greet you at its entrance.
Your first visit to Wooden Bakery Jabriya will instantly make you feel like you’ve been here before. It’s homey, with the aroma of freshly baked goods awakening your senses. We couldn’t think of a better way to start off our morning than at Wooden Bakery Jabriya. The interior is spacious and comfortable, and the outdoor patio area is equally cute for chilling outdoors during the evenings (yes, we’ve been so lucky with the weather!). We loved how the entire interior showcases baked goodies, with beautiful, golden baguettes and rounds of country bread adorning the back wall above the display counters and ovens.
And while we were keen to feast on an endless spread of Manakeesh, croissants, pizza, and dessert, we were pleasantly surprised by the showcase of retail offerings on display. We came in for Brunch, but decided to go shopping! We knew that Wooden Bakery’s impressive retail range can be found at your closest coop, but seeing it up close and personal at the Jabriya Flagship store was an unforgettable experience.
From freshly baked bread rolls and flatbreads of all varieties, gorgeous French pastries, beloved Shaboura rusks, toast bread to suit every lifestyle (Sliced White bread, Sliced Bran Bread and Sliced Multicereal Bread for an extra nutritional kick), to delectable cookies and biscuits perfect for teatime with friends, a visit to Wooden Bakery Jabriya to stock up on everyday essentials is a must! We especially loved the mini toast bites, perfect for the little ones’ everyday school lunches. We would even go as far as to add in the crispy Oat Flakes too, or the mini muffins! And for gatherings with friends and family, we know that we will be stopping here first to stock up on Wooden Bakery’s freshest Kaak crackers! Perfect for elevating rustic grazing boards, we will make sure to include the Thyme and Sesame Kaak in our next charcuterie platter. We honestly had no idea Wooden Bakery’s range of freshly baked goodies was so extensive, and seeing everything on display at their Jabriya location
had us grabbing a shopping cart and loading up on so many munchable snacks for the office.
Wooden Bakery also has a fully stocked breakfast essentials shelf, complete with coffee, cereal, and anything else you would need (aside from their yummy manakeesh, which you should totally order for takeaway) to recreate an immaculate breakfast or brunch spread at home! All of Wooden Bakery’s baked goods are freshly prepared daily in Kuwait using wholesome ingredients, so you can rest assured that you would be choosing the best quality products for your loved ones.
But life is all about balance, and when it’s time to indulge, all you need to do is let your eyes dance over the dessert counters at Wooden Bakery, as you will be spoilt for choice! The famous Lebanese Lazy cake is a firm favorite of ours, and while we appreciated this nostalgic hit, we absolutely couldn’t get enough of the freshness of the tantalizing tarts, eclairs, Tiramisu, Caramel,
and new Gelato cakes, amongst so many other offerings. You can opt for whole cakes at incredibly accessible price points, or make your selection of mini gateaux. We know that we will be stopping by Wooden Bakery Jabriya before our next gettogether with friends for these freshly prepared delights! If you’re rushed for time, then make sure you opt for Wooden Bakery’s delivery service for a dose of their decadent desserts, wherever you are.
After our shopping interlude, we still knew that nothing would satisfy our morning craving more than a worthy cheese pull of note on a melted Akkawi manakeesh, or a warm, freshly baked croissant dipped in a heart-warming Latté. We settled in for our feast, including the brightest sunny side up breakfast eggs, Hummus (seriously, Wooden Bakery offers the creamiest, tastiest Hummus in Kuwait, trust us on this one!), Lahem B Aajin and Cheese (we opted for extra Pomegranate Molasses on this one) and a Classic
Akkawi Cheese Manakeesh which delivered that mighty cheese pull we were after. Wooden Bakery also launched their light wraps, which use their beautiful light and airy Tannour bread, and we opted for the Halloumi and Chicken and Avocado options to round up our Brunch experience.

YOUR EVERYDAY IS ELEVATED WITH
THM!
The Hall Market is a brand full of curiousities, and it’s consistently tempting our taste buds
By bazaar Staff Gorgeous Truffles from THM’s ChocolateryWe cannot imagine that you made it to a gathering this Ramadan where the fabulous The Hall Market’s (THM) Tin Cake desserts did not make an appearance debut. They were a sensational hit this season, and they are clearly here to stay! Glorious desserts to tempt you yearround are not all that THM has to offer. The local born THM is here to elevate our favorite foods and give them a wholesome, yet sumptuous, twist and present them in style.
THM was started from a passion for nature and its wonderful creations, and how it could be used to create a selection of delicious goodies that not only nourish the body but also the soul. Often, we enjoy delicious food that tastes good, but lacks nutritious goodness, this is where THM comes in. The brand brings you authentic, locally crafted exceptional foods that just exude goodness, perfect for starting your day or sharing with your loved ones.
The brand that brought you the unique Tin Cakes dessert this Ramadan, along with the decadent truffles, currently has four categories of deliciousness: The Juicery, Munch, The Oaven Bakery and Chocolatery. And let us tell you this much, we love tasting everything that comes from THM kitchens, it literally makes our day!
The Juicery brings you slow, cold-pressed juices and fresh cut fruits, all with a twist. The juices are all cold pressed and mixed specifically to uplift your day! When you feel you need a little mental boost, you can try the Memory Focus which is a blend of lemon, beetroot, ginger, pomegranate, apple, and chia seeds. When you are just in the mood for a little pick me up, go for Gratitude, which is a combination of watermelon and rose, it will perk you right up! But if juices aren’t for you, their selection of cut fruits - from the Beauty Glow Elixir or Exotic Fruit Cup with a variety of delicious fresh fruits, may be more your jam.
Speaking of jam, THM brings you some of the most flavorsome jams we have ever tasted. The fruit is picked when it is at its freshest from Lebanon’s mountains and turned into delicious, wholesome artisanal jams that you will just want more and more of. You can choose from apricot, blackberry, fig, strawberry, rose, and our favorite, lemon. And if it’s dips you are after, perfect with gatherings with friends and loved ones, THM has developed an entire vegan line in delectable flavors. You won’t believe that the Butter N’Herbs dip is made without real butter! And for everyday indulgence on the go, you must try THM’s nut butters, naturally sweetened, and perfectly spreadable on toast!
If it is delectable baked goods that you are after, then you should explore the Oaven Bakery. THM only uses organic, stone-ground, whole-wheat grains for its baked goods, including Oaven’s wholesome dessert. No preservatives are used for a healthful approach, and everything is sweetened with natural sugars. We absolutely cannot get enough of the crunch on the wholewheat Sourdough country bread, and we adore Oaven’s wholewheat sourdough Focaccia! You can also enjoy flavorsome fatayer, breads and pizzas that just make you feel so good as you eat them. And the baked sweets are just so lush! The coconut shaboura, made with whole-wheat flour and coconut sugar, will even make your grandma a fan of THM. The brand has even managed to turn Nougat healthy, using dates, almonds and cocoa powder and you can choose your favorite topping from coconut, sesame seeds, pistachio or cocoa powder and indulge guilt-free.
Under the Munch umbrella of goodies, THM brings us fantastic freeze-dried fruits that preserve the goodness of fruits without sugars and preservatives. There are four fabulous fruits to choose from:
crispy apple, crispy apricot, crispy banana, and crispy strawberry. We cannot talk about Munch without taking a moment to appreciate the truly decadent ice cream that we have tasted. THM has created a line of ice creams that just tantalizes the taste buds, and we love the fun flavors they have. Senorita combines the magic of dark chocolate, signature Senorita banana, and caramelized pecan; you have vanilla mango coconut flavor, acai peanut butter, amongst many others. The absolute showstopper for us, that all your friends will love you for, is the gemar honeycomb ice cream, the crunch from the homemade honeycomb marries
perfectly with the gemar flavored base of the ice cream. We will take a gallon please!
Last but definitely not the least, we come to the Chocolatery. The desserts that shook Ramadan! The stuff of all our food dreams. We are sure the Chocolatery is soon going to have its own cult following. We especially love the Tin Cake which comes in four tantalizing flavors: Banoffee, dark chocolate, mango cheesecake, and tiramisu – and you have to crack the top chocolate layer to get into the delightfulness that awaits underneath. In addition, we have the scrumptious truffles, the salted caramel and passion fruit flavors ooze as you
bite into them which is absolute perfection. There is still a lot more to come under the Chocolatery and we are going to be ordering it all. Stay tuned!
So, whether you are going to a gathering, or treating yourself to some delicious goodies, we highly recommend THM! We promise you won’t be disappointed; however, we cannot be held responsible for any addictions that may occur. Follow THM on Instagram @thehallmarket to see what other deliciousness they come up with, and go ahead and place your order already on their website: www.thehallmarket.net.
A BREAKFAST TO REMEMBER AT HATAY SOFRASI
By bazaar StaffIf you’ve ever planned a trip to Turkey, part of your daily plans included indulging in their magnificent breakfast spreads, tea and coffee. You don’t need a trip to Turkey to enjoy delicious Turkish cuisine anymore, a trip to Hatay Sofrasi will take you straight there as you begin your day.
Part of the Souk at The Avenues, you can’t go wrong with choosing where to sit at Hatay Sofrasi. Either sit outside the restaurant and enjoy the hubbub of people walking past as you enjoy your breakfast or sit indoors and take in the beautiful interiors, lovely décor and open kitchen. We decided to sit outside the restaurant as the natural light in the morning made it hard to say no to! Either way, it’s the optimal way to start your day before embarking on your shopping adventure.
Once you’re seated, you’re greeted with a wonderful smile and a basket of hot Simit bread,
which you can’t go wrong with as you journey through the delicious menu.
With everything on their breakfast menu looking extremely appetizing, we decided to start off our visit with the Turkish Village. This breakfast tray is the perfect way to get you started with portions of Turkish Labneh, olives, hummus, foul, and cream with honey all around a beautiful tray of assorted cheeses. Perfect for sharing, this is a great way to get your palette prepared for more delectable breakfast items.
You can’t visit Hatay Sofrasi for breakfast without ordering their must-have Menemen eggs, a traditional spicy Turkish dish inclusive of eggs, tomato and peppers. Let them know exactly how you like your eggs – we got it sunny side up! – and prepare yourself for a dish that will leave you wanting more. The oven-baked Pita bread is a wonderful companion
to the Menemen eggs and you can choose your filling between Cheese, Sujuk or Labneh. Spoiler alert: They’re all absolutely delicious!
Have space for a little more? Well, make space for the Cheese Börek, a delicious filo pastry with cheese that left us all sitting back in our seats with a smile once the plate was cleaned off.
Now it’s time for the perfect ending: Turkish tea and coffee with baklava on the side. This will not only help you end your breakfast on a high note, it will also give you the energy you need to start your day shopping at The Avenues Mall.
Follow Hatay Sofrasi@hataysofrasi_kw on Instagram and visit their locations at The Avenues Mall and Murouj. You can also order through their website www.akdenizhataysofrasikw.com or through Talabat, Deliveroo.
BBQ SEASON IS BACK AT SHAKE SHACK!
By bazaar StaffSoft potato buns, perfectly seasoned patties, and crisp, fresh vegetables are found in every single burger made at Shake Shack, but here to shake things up is the BBQ Limited Time menu! Get ready for the incredibly mouthwatering BBQ menu, with your choice of BBQ Cheddar or BBQ Chicken with a side of the delicious BBQ Veal Bacon Cheese Fries! Believe us when we say that we ran to our closest Shack to sink our teeth into the BBQ Cheddar Burger, and it was glorious.
It’s never easy to pick a favorite somewhere where everything is calling for you on their menu but this time, we had to take advantage of the return of the limited time only BBQ Menu and so we did. But even then, it was hard to pick which burger we wanted, so we just got both with a side of the delicious fries as well. Kicking off since last May and ongoing until the end of July, the BBQ offerings at Shake Shack came at the perfect time to bring us our favorite summery, BBQ flavors.
We started off with the BBQ Cheddar, and it is exactly what you’d expect but so much more. From the first bite, your teeth easily sinks into the burger and you can clearly taste every single ingredient. The meat patty was not only perfectly cooked, but impeccably seasoned and the cheddar cheese was melted to absolute perfection. Topped with the right amount of Shack’s signature irresistible BBQ sauce and including the crispy fried onions and pickles, the BBQ Cheddar is a definite must-have. Once that was completely devoured, it was time to try the chicken and for a second, we thought nothing could top the BBQ Cheddar and we were right, but also wrong.
The BBQ Chicken burger cannot be compared to the BBQ Cheddar not because it’s not as good, but because it’s so deliciously different. You can taste the quality of the hormone free, antibiotic-free, all-natural chicken breast with every bite. A musthave for every chicken burger lover out there, the crispy chicken breast is topped with melted cheddar cheese, pickles, onions and of course the star of the show: Shack BBQ Sauce. But remember, you can’t get your burgers without a side of fries!
Shake Shack’s Crinkle Cut Fries are a favorite among all their guests and what makes it better is topping it up with cheese sauce. What makes it even better than that is adding veal bacon AND the Shack BBQ sauce to have perfection in every single bite.
The biggest surprise for us was even with ordering all three BBQ items, we never felt like it was ‘too much’ BBQ sauce at any point as it worked seamlessly to have it blended together to get the right level of BBQ goodness in every offering. For our drinks, we decided to go for the Blood Orange Lemonade and the fresh, tangy sourness of it complemented our BBQ-rich food perfectly. We know we’ll be sipping on his lemonade for as long as it’s available on the menu, as it’s the best pick-me-up before heading to the beach!
You can get the full Shake Shack BBQ Menu experience when you visit or when you order as it’s delivered faultlessly to you. We’ll definitely be ordering and visiting again soon!
Enjoy the BBQ Menu now at any of Shake Shack’s locations in Kuwait or order through their website www.shakeshackme.com or through Talabat or Deliveroo. Keep up with their latest news on Instagram and Facebook by following @shakeshackme.

In her spirited new memoir, Birdgirl , Craig chronicles her family’s globe-trotting adventures as together they immerse themselves in birdwatching and celebrate the natural world while documenting its increasing fragility. Along the way, Craig reveals the impact of her mom’s mental health struggles on her family and how being in nature plays a vital role in her family’s well-being. “Birdwatching has never felt like a hobby, or a pastime I can pick up and put down,” she writes, “but a thread running through the pattern of my life, so tightly woven in that there’s no way of pulling it free and leaving the rest of my life intact.”
WIND KNOWS MY NAME
This is a contemporary fiction that spans Vienna in 1938 to Arizona in 2019. Samual Adler is sent away from Vienna at 5 years old with nothing but a change of clothes and his violin. Seven-year-old Anita Diaz and her become separated while seeking refuge in the US after escaping El Salvador. This is a powerful pick about children who survive and continue to dream.
HOSTILE
New York Times bestselling author Jenny Odell first tackled our relationship to time in How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy. In it, she stressed the importance of unplugging from the frenetic world we’ve created and granting ourselves a moment to breathe and contemplate our lives. In Saving Time, due out on March 7, Odell takes things a step further, revealing how throughout history the idea of time has been commodified, forcing us into an artificial system of counting down the days and hours. Odell proposes living with a different clock, one that’s in tune with the patterns of nature and our brain. “This is a moving and provocative game changer” says Publishers Weekly in its starred review of Saving Time. If your sense of time went sideways during the pandemic, Odell’s latest work may serve as a much-needed corrective.
ONLY ONE LEFT
We adore Samantha Irby’s comedic essays. Her bestselling funny memoirs are suffused with hilarity and humanity. So we can’t wait to dive into Quietly Hostile, Irby’s latest collection of essays, due out on May 16. In it, Irby muses on the life she leads, mining the absurdities of day-to-day existence and her literary career as well as her newfound success in show biz to uproarious effect. From bathroom etiquette and the perils of pandemic-era dog adoptions to very weird emails about Carrie Bradshaw, Irby’s latest will have you “crying and laughing” (Today) in the best way possible.
by Greta Thunberg, Non-FictionIt’s hard to believe that climate activist Greta Thunberg will only turn 20 this year. Her inspirational solo protests and school strikes focused the world on the climate emergency — and she’s determined to show us that we can make a difference in combating the crisis. In The Climate Book, due out on February 14, Thunberg draws on insight from more than 100 experts, from oceanographers and meteorologists to engineers, mathematicians, and Indigenous leaders, to create a climate compendium that equips us to take action. Thunberg is no idealist; she knows the world is in peril. Rather, she’s a hopeful pragmatist who understands that we must listen to climate science and rise up to make a difference now, before it’s too late.
The Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred. It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night. In her seventies and confined to a wheelchair, Lenora was rendered mute by a series of strokes and can only communicate with Kit by tapping out sentences on an old typewriter. One night, Lenora uses it to make a tantalizing offer—I want to tell you everything
