My resolution for 2020 is to…….not make any new resolutions! I’ve made too many unsuccessful ones to count in the past, and I refuse to calculate just how much money I’ve wasted on unused gym memberships, and so much other crap that is now just taking up space at home. Speaking of that, does anyone out there want to buy an almost brand new treadmill that’s currently being used as a clothes hanger?

On a more serious note, resolutions don’t have to be made on a specific day of the year, and I’ve discovered that the ones that matter most aren’t necessarily the ones that affect you personally, but the ones that affect those around you too. For example, a few years ago, I vowed to try and be more patient, generous, and understanding with the working classes here in Kuwait who we literally interact with a million times a day at home and at work (maid, nanny, driver, cleaner, farash, coffee boy, security etc) and to give them those five minutes of conversation, or whatever else they desperately need, especially when compared to us who must appear to live in La La Land compared to them. It’s really nothing out of my day, or out of my pocket, but it makes a huge difference to them.

Just like the TrashTag initiative which bazaar tried this month, small incremental changes can transform the world.

I know that January is usually a time for looking towards the future, but it is quite healthy to look at the past too. The Sons of Sinbad exhibit at the Yarmuk Culture Center is a window into Kuwait’s heritage of pearl diving and seafaring. Through the lens of Alan Villiers, it is a snapshot of a time long gone but deeply encoded in Kuwait’s collective memory and legacy.

ALAN VILLIERS & THE SONS OF SINBAD EXHIBITION Date: December 1 – January 31 Location: Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah Amricani Cultural Centre The Australian Embassy presents stories told of Kuwait, its sailors and ships through photographs, movies, journals and drawings of Alan Villiers, an Australian explorer in 1930’s Kuwait. This impressive curation skillfully depicts the respect and admiration Villiers had as an experienced sea-captain for Kuwaitis as a sea-faring nation and documents what turned out to be the declining years of sailing; six years before the first export of oil from Kuwait. Villiers’ nine month voyage aboard Captain Najdi’s ship Bayan produced what is now considered to be the seminal work on Kuwaiti and Arab seafaring, “Sons of Sinbad” on which this rather moving and thought provoking exhibition is based. FIERCE AND FEARLESS Sarah Kuraibet’s unstoppable motocross ride By bazaar staff

Ever since she was 20 years old, Sarah has been an avid and passionate motorcycle rider. Growing up with two older brothers who were always involved in motorsports, and going out on action-filled fun activities that included dirt biking in the desert with friends gave her the confidence to pursue this path even further, and get on the track professionally.

Now, the 26 year old, has already ventured into motocross racing. The sport gave her the addictive adrenaline rush, and as she continued to get better by training, she was completely hooked. Not only that, but Sarah also spoke highly of the community as she says “Everyone is supportive, you go to the track and there’s a lot of people, and the atmosphere is just awesome. This time you’re not just a spectator, you’re actually part of the entire thing.”

In the past, Sarah was drawn to the automotive world, but the community wasn’t as welcoming as it is now. Unlike current times, women weren’t dominating the scene back then which resulted into certain drawbacks. Sarah says that “One of the reasons I stopped was because it was kind of uncomfortable.

When you go to certain places, especially industrial areas to get stuff done, people just bug you all the time. They don't think you know what you’re talking about. If you want to do something, they always try to suggest something else, or try to impose their views on you.”

But, this obstacle helped Sarah to find her true passion, motorcycles. Even though there was a negative image around it, she says, “It’s a sport just like any other sport. It takes so much training to do. People tend to have a negative impression about that, but actually, I don’t really see anything negative. The people I'm riding with; my friends, and everyone else is super supportive.” The support alone makes her happy, because to Sarah, it means that any other woman who is interested in this sport will be welcomed completely, without having to struggle with notions that are simply based on stereotypes.

When Sarah was training in the UAE, where a ladies category was actually set and placed within their motocross racing programs, unexpected turnouts occurred. She joined the Solid Racing team as they were looking to expand their territories in the region. The inclusion of a female racer was positive for both of them. But, when Sarah came back to Kuwait, she started looking for local sponsorships, and applied to Yamaha who accepted her as one of them.

“For me, getting the sponsorship was more about getting women to be interested in this sport. Because women here are a huge demographic, and this is a male dominated sport but women haven’t given it a chance as well. I think if you have that personality, you're tough, and you want something exciting then it’s definitely up your ally. But not a lot of people know it,” says Sarah. With the support of a big company like Yamaha, she is hoping to encourage more women to join the sport, and maybe it will start opening up the doors for a ladies class in Kuwait just like UAE’s.

Sarah also sees herself as her very own challenge. Even though she is a confident person by nature, and has gone through so much training prior to a race, it remains mentally tough. “When you’re racing, you tend to get something like stage fright. So, you really have to work on your mental game a lot,” she says. Sarah has already raced in several countries including the UK and South Africa, and she states that the sport is very technical. That’s why she used to be one of the people who became frustrated easily, but it built up her skills in tolerance and patience.

When Sarah takes a look at how she started to where she’s arrived now it really puts things in perspective. She sometimes spends her vacation by either taking her bike or renting one to go on adventures and ride in different continents around the world, including conquering the mountains of Nepal. She’s managed to snatch the third place at Dubai in the ladies category of motocross races, and it was her first win ever. After that win she says “I kind of don’t want to stop being on that podium, so.. [laughs],” and we certainly do not want to stop seeing her on the podium either!

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL QUESTIONNAIRE What do you most value about your friends?

They are very talented, accepting and non-judgmental. Each one of my friends has a unique trait that inspires my personal growth.

Which living person do you most admire?

It’s genuinely difficult to choose just one person. I admire all members of my family as they shaped me into the person I am today. My parents would be first, as they are two of the most hardworking, resilient, and supportive people I’ve ever known. My siblings are all compassionate, talented and are always there for me no matter what. All of them are warriors in their own way, and I look up to them and admire them all.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Being content with myself and having fulfilling relationships with friends and family. Watching everyone close to me being happy and living their life.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Definitely my motorcycles and my racing. Maintenance, repairs, buying equipment, and travelling to races definitely burns a hole in my bank account at the end of each month!

What is your most treasured possession?

I have a few personal items from my mother and grandmother that I hold very close to my heart.

What is your greatest fear?

Settling down and not taking chances in life. I don’t want to look back at my life when I’m older and say: “I wish I’d done this, I wish I’d done that.”

What is your most marked characteristic?

I’m really (Like really) persistent. I don’t take “no” for an answer. Which is a good, and a bad thing.

Which talent would you most like to have?

Writing. I love writing, but I don’t think I am any good at it!

What is one trait you have that you are most grateful for?

Never giving up. I always push through things. Sometimes it’s difficult but at other times you look back, and you thank yourself for pushing through it.

What is the human trait you most dislike about others?

Dishonesty. The world would be a much, much better place if we were all just honest with each other.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

“Just do it!”

What are you favorite words to live by?

Be who you are and say what you mean, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.

Where would you most like to live?

I don’t have anywhere in particular, but it would be nice if I could live in Scotland where I grew up.

If you could have any job, what would it be?

Meteorologist or theoretical physicist.

What would you consider your greatest achievement?

Publishing and presenting a work related paper in Germany. I was proud to be the youngest presenter/publisher there and representing my company.

What do you hope for the future?

Global warming not to fry us alive.

THE SLEEPY CAMEL WAKES UP! Art and the artistry of coffee in Soapbox’s unique café By bazaar Staff

The Sleepy Camel Coffee Co. officially launched with a flurry of artists eager to share their ideas to celebrate the occasion. A design of a camel canvas was commissioned from UNIT, one of the incubated retailers in Soapbox, Promenade Mall, and sent out to ten local artists. On the official launch night all ten pieces were beautifully displayed with a plaque and on a specially designed stand, and without exception, every single camel had its own group of admirers.

The artists who took part were of all ages, the youngest to submit a camel canvas was eighteen year old Manar Al Tammar who jumped at the chance to take part in this exhibition. Manar says she is, “Always striving for the opportunity to express [myself] through different forms of media.”

Others took inspiration from iconic landmarks or infamous local areas like “Souq Al Manakh”. This is the case with the piece by Mishari AlNajjar whose camel looked just like the tiled wall of the landmark, notorious for the various dubious goings on that would take place there. Manakh roughly translates in this case as “sitting camel”, as the name of this souq came about because the tradesmen would come and sit their camels down in this area on their breaks.

Hasan Ali took inspiration from a woman he knows called Latifah who’s story he finds fascinating and multi-layered like the piece he produced using the images of women from the ruba, to Russian iconography. There is a rainbow of color across the camel canvas, a cell phone nurtured like a baby, with an oil-pumping mechanical donkey at one end and the flight of butterflies at the other.

Some artists painted on both sides of the camel canvas, as did artist Aisha Burhama who depicted sleepy camel coffee cups and the act of drinking coffee on the foundation of a particularly hirsute camel. This is the artist’s USP, “I am fascinated with drawing hair on everything!”

An unassumingly cute depiction of the many different characters that we encounter every day in Kuwait was illustrated perfectly by Fatima Al Othman.

There’s the thick-necked gym body guy (usually seen in summer!), the designer clad thick eyebrowed fashionista, the hipster sporting a man-bun and most are on their cell phones showing off to their friends, or most likely -followers. That’s some sharp social commentary done right there, but with affection.

There is something about the camel canvases that took the artists back to subjects that they loved when

they were children. So, we got space inspired mixed media pieces from Mariam Ashkanani, vast plain star lit nights from Asma Al Onaizi, and a surrealist piece that turned a mundane camel ride into a real trip that came from Zahra Al Mahdi!

Malak Al Suwaihel’s camel is particularly poignant.

Taking the camel shape as an icon of the desert, overlaid is a photograph of the desert now, covered in energy towers, “the desert at present” with a near nonsensical poem printed over the image.

And last but not least, we have the representation of the camel as a completely adaptable creature with the words written into contour lines from Norah Al Jassar, “When something goes wrong in your life, yell “plot twist” and move on.”

It was certainly a plot twist in Samer Naoum’s life when he discovered how much he loved to roast his own coffee beans while he was at university. He has since founded one of the most delicious coffee brands in Kuwait, where you only ever get a great tasting brew of coffee no matter what the bean. Bushido Bandit now supplies the beans at The Sleepy Camel, and Samer spent the night behind the bar on the café’s launch night hand pouring and brewing various beans. Samer’s is a fascinating story, and the branding fits Samer’s character perfectly; a young man with multiple interests in which he takes part conscientiously and with dedication. And hopefully, those of you who do visit the Sleepy Camel Coffee Co., will come to be passionate about this little oasis. The location is ideal, there’s tons of parking in Promenade Mall, Soapbox is spacious and calming with very comfortable and stylish furniture where you can sit quietly by yourself or in groups. While you’re there, you absolutely must try the Camel Latte.

It’s similar to a Spanish latte, with the sweet coffee balanced on the top, and the thickly textured camel milk sitting on the bottom. One swirl and the delicious mixture is ready to drink! It’s utterly delicious. And who knew how flavorsome different milks can be. Sleepy Camel Coffee Co. is the one-stop coffee shop that can satisfy the taste buds for all kinds of milk lovers. UNCONVENTIONALLY ARAB Saad Alessa's homecoming

Life can have a mind of its own. One day you’re a law school graduate, and the next thing you know you are an up-and-coming stand-up comedian. That is exactly what happened to Saad Alessa. Like many of us, Saad began his life living logically, doing all the “right” things and what society expected of him.

Until he realized, there is no true fulfillment in listening to society’s advice on what you should do, and instead realized that “success” is relative. Each person’s definition of success can be completely different. So, ultimately, who was society to define him as successful or not? Feeling lost, but at the same time hopeful, he moved abroad on a journey of self-discovery.

Upon completing his Bachelor’s degree in Los Angeles, Saad moved back to Kuwait in 2015, where he worked in the logistics and distribution field.

Looking for purpose, he set off to start an ambitious automotive project in Kuwait, but did not receive the support he had hoped for within the Middle East.

Feeling unsatisfied, he moved back to the States 9 months later in search of a new challenge and ended up pursuing another degree. In 2016, he enrolled in Pepperdine Law School for a Master’s degree in Dispute Resolution.

By the time he was done, Saad’s threshold for tolerating the trials and tribulations of the conventional route had been reached. It was time to try something new. Reading Robert Greene’s Mastery proved to be a pivotal moment. It had convinced him that the pursuit of happiness and success is a process that involves trial, error, and an immense amount of dedication. “The most beautiful thing I did in my life was to quit my job, go to L.A. and start this idea I had for a docuseries… it opened new doors for me”, he says. Saad is referring to Legendiary, an online series where he interviews successful and noteworthy individuals who have exhibited the type of grit, desire, and ambition that could inspire others to chase their dreams. The show’s motto is “Legends Do”, a mantra which reflects Saad’s belief that to be motivated one should take action first, and embrace the oncoming barrage of challenges and opportunities. “Just waiting for things to happen won’t get you anywhere”.

So began his journey as a producer, interviewer and a graduate student. Legendiary was gaining momentum, his studies were going very well, but there was something still missing. As the year was rolling to an end at Pepperdine, a chance encounter with one of his professors helped ping him onto his current path. “I thought it was funny at the time, and I remember him going ‘Saad, if you're not going into criminal law, I suggest you try out stand-up comedy, because you’re an entertainer at heart, and a natural public speaker’”. Needless to say, the seed was planted, and one day he decided to throw his name into the bucket and got a few minutes of stage time at the West Side Comedy Theatre in Santa Monica.

He was initially surprised by how the crowd had received him, and how the stage had felt “right”.

“They laughed at every punch line for three minutes…

I had butterflies,” he expresses.

The wheels were firmly set in motion, and his desire to come back and do better grew after every set. Soon enough, it started becoming a habit; every Saturday Saad would go back to the stage to practice his material and cultivate his newfound passion for stand-up. He believes that passions are like emotions and nothing is set in stone. If you do not try something out, you won’t really know how you feel doing it. “Passions…they grow, they develop, they change and they shrink,” he shares with us.

Six months later, he decided to take it more seriously and moved closer to the comedy scene.

This led him to his first booked show. The gig was at Flappers Comedy Club in Burbank, California which snowballed into more gigs, and soon enough Saad

found what he describes as his true calling.

He was also quick to add that he enjoys studying other comics’ work. When asked about his comedic idols, “Hands down George Carlin, my ultimate favorite comedian. I listen to all his tapes, I study his mannerisms and how he speaks. Dave Chappelle, definitely. Anthony Jeselnik, whose writing I love and I think he is one of the best punch line writers in the industry. Chris Rock; I love how he controls the crowd.”

When asked if he received any backlash from society, he said he doesn’t really pay much attention to people who do not take his profession seriously, since they are acting out of fear (be it fear of failure, or fear of judgement) and their own narrow mindset.

He never gives their backlash any magnitude. Overall, most people have been supportive and loving.

Saad was quite compassionate towards his naysayers. “First of all, I think it’s important to realize that this can come from love because sometimes we try to control the ones we love. However, I think we are so disconnected from pain and struggle and have access to things people would only dream of.

We are so afraid to aim high, so we settle for goals that we know are attainable, yet challenging enough where we don’t lose sleep over them.. Bottom line is, we are defined by what we reject and I reject other people’s opinions on how I should live my truth. To me, real wealth is finding happiness and fulfillment, by accumulating experiences and not ‘things’.”

Despite running Legendiary and doing stand-up

comedy, he still wanted a way to sharpen his speaking skills, and so the idea of The Saad Truth podcast was born. A platform to share his thoughts in a raw and unedited manner. When asked about his future, he says he does not like to set 5 or 10-year plans because he never knows where life may lead him.

That being said, he plans to narrow his immediate focus on stand-up, and continue The Saad Truth and the works of Legendiary.

His motto is “dare to defy the common”. He explained that he came up with it when he was working on his automotive project. It has since been a source of inspiration for him in many ways, kindling his inner fire by dismissing the common path.

Saad has accomplished another major milestone recently, opening for Maz Jobrani during a show in Kuwait, where 2000 people showed up to support him (we were there!). The room was full of laughter, and even the ones who did not personally know him were in tears (the good kind, don’t worry!). He was creative, confident and openly challenged taboos and stuffy minds while up on stage.

When we asked him if he had any advice to aspiring comedians, he said “don't be afraid to try, challenge yourself, work on finding your voice, and be open to criticism. There’s no magic recipe, but above all, perseverance breeds reward.”

PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION Alan Villiers & the Sons of Sinbad: an Australian in 1930’s Kuwait By bazaar staff

Kuwait is moving boldly towards the future, sharply focused on achieving the seven pillars in the vision 2035 initiative. At this time, looking back on the past seems prudent; remembering the foundations of hardy ingenuity that built this country stands Kuwait in good stead. The Australian Embassy, in collaboration with Dar Al-Athar Al-Islamiyyah, presents both still and moving pictures in this exhibition that showcases the seafaring genius of Kuwaitis, and Australian explorer Alan Villiers’ recognition of, and dogged documentation of this.

In the same way that Modest Mussorgsky’s composition Pictures at an Exhibition has become the seminal showpiece for virtuoso pianists, this collection, temporarily housed in the Amricani Cultural Centre is evidence of Villiers as the ultimate explorer and adventurer. There’s no ‘noble savage’ prejudice here, what shines through in the exhibition is an ingenuous and untainted respect for the people and discoveries Villiers made in Kuwait, where he learned from those whom he encountered.

Villiers’ book “Sons of Sinbad” documents the 1938-1939 voyage he shared on the Bayan captained by Kuwait mariner Ali Nasser Al Najdi.

The book is the only work of its kind on Kuwaiti seafaring, set in the last days of the voyaging dhows, six years before the first export of oil out of Kuwait. The careful curation of the exhibition has resulted in a 32

small but comprehensive representation of Villiers’ experiences and is utterly unmissable.

Christopher “Kit” Villiers, Alan’s son, was invited to Kuwait to take part in the many events and celebrations organized by the Australian Embassy and Ambassador Jonathan Gilbert to commemorate Alan Villiers’ Kuwait journey, including the launch of the Amricani exhibition. Also invited to Kuwait was scholar, author, former resident of Kuwait and former Kuwait Oil Company employee Grace Pundyk who rediscovered Villiers’ photography and journals in the depths of the National Maritime Museum archives in London. Grace was instrumental in organizing the production of coffee table book, Sons of Sinbad: The Photographs in 2006, which was listed in The Times top 5 photography books for that year. The story of how Grace met Arabian Publishing’s owner William Facey, someone who separately had been considering how to get "Sons of Sinbad" back in print, is a story for another day; but this is the collaboration that pulled together the photographs book. bazaar got the rare opportunity to talk to Kit and Grace at the same time, and it was fascinating to listen to the discussions between them; a son’s recollection of his father alongside a researcher’s understanding of a subject through her findings. “I hope we don’t disagree!” Kit remarked at the start, with a keen sense of humor.

What is completely unexpected to see is the highquality film footage that Villiers shot. Remember, in 1938, reel cameras of this kind are the rarified objects of wealthy owners. Kit explains that his father was a popular author, and the income from this funded his travels and the purchasing of equipment.

Alan Villiers wrote over forty books in his lifetime, becoming known for his tall ships or square rigger knowledge, and in 1938 the 34 years old already had fifteen nautical themed books under his belt.

Villiers even became a consultant for Hollywood, and advised on maritime productions like 1962’s HMS Defiant, featuring huge movie stars of the day Dirk Bogarde, Alec Guiness and Anthony Quayle, “and myself of course!” laughs Kit, after telling stories of he and his siblings being extras in the movie.

The smiling faces of the Kuwaitis that Alan Villiers captured leave a lasting impression; no-one seems to be looking suspiciously or angrily at the man behind the camera. In fact, the subjects at the end of Villiers’ lens seem to have welcomed interacting with him, in order for Villiers to be able to take such intimate footage. This is Kuwaiti hospitality as we know it, natural hosts, open and welcoming. That was a great piece of luck, to land here, as it wasn’t necessarily Kuwait that Villiers was aiming for. “He wanted to document Arab dhow journeys” explains Grace, “Dying trade,” Kit interrupts, and Grace agrees. She goes on to describe how Villiers was introduced through the British to an agent in Yemen who put Alan in touch with the Al Hamad family who eventually put him on Bayan, Najdi’s dhow which from Yemen travelled down the east coast of Africa and then back to Kuwait.

Grace Pundyk explains her favotite exhibition photograph Asked if he ever would have visited Kuwait, had it not been for this exhibition and series of events, Kit honestly admits, “No.” but expresses his delight with the hospitality he’s received and offers profuse thanks. Kit says that what he has come away with from his visit is, “…amazement! To think that a full eighty years after the voyages that it’s come to this terrific explosion of interest,” going on to say he sees how his father’s adventuring, “…in turn has reflected on the Alhambra world, particularly on the Najdi family and Najdi who presumably was just an ordinary dhow captain and now is considered a great hero, and has his own documentary.” But, it is Alan Villiers’ documentation through his book Sons of Sinbad – An Account of Sailing with the Arabs in their

dhows, in the Red Sea, round the coasts of Arabia, and to Zanzibar and Tanganyika; Pearling in the Persian Gulf; and the life of Shipmasters and the Mariners of Kuwait that this exhibition celebrates. Alan Villiers & the Sons of Sinbad: an Australian in 1930’s Kuwait is a mere snapshot of all the Australian adventurer has to share with the world on his Kuwait experience, and you absolutely must go to see it. bazaar can’t recommend it enough.

But they are long gone, and forgotten along with 2019. A resolution is only significant when you’ve burnt yourself out trying to achieve it, yet, it really does not have to be that dramatic. It can be as simple as our 2020 resolutions!

IN THE EYES OF THE BEHOLDER The art of Fatemah Dashti By bazaar staff

When the chance of studying abroad comes along, many of us would jump at the once in a lifetime opportunity. Fatemah Dashti is currently studying Architectural Engineering at the University of Liverpool. The 20-year-old artist with a mind full of creativity, is not only in her final year of her degree, but she is also flourishing with her expressive art.

When Fatemah decided to take her art more seriously, it was because of her growing need to express herself rather than it just being a simple hobby. She says, “At the beginning it started off with self-portraits because I really liked the idea of me being the subject of my own art, and it’s a way of expressing myself. At the time, I felt like the best way to express myself is to paint myself.”

What inspires Fatemah the most to create more art are three things; her surroundings, people, and society which is also connected to her journey abroad. “People started inspiring me, so coming here [to Liverpool], being around different people and a different art community, it kind of made me feel more confident in sharing,” she says. Over the past years, Fatemah started interacting with the art community in the UK, found them to be very supportive, and they have given her a platform where she can share her art, but more importantly, sell it in galleries too.

Yet, if you look at the progression of her paintings, you’ll notice the slow but sure transition from self-portraits to deeper themes. Fatemah explains, “I still do self-portraits but I’ve moved on, to other things. Recently, most of my art has been revolving around being in a society or a culture and not fitting into a box.” She sometimes uses Arabic phrases to make her art more connected to her hometown, Kuwait. But, Fatemah has also used it for those who may be feeling the same way she does, “Sometimes although you don’t feel like a misfit, you do feel like you’re scared to be judged because maybe you’re different,” she says.

In her art, Fatemah constantly uses the eyes as an element, however, the meaning behind it has changed as well. At first, they represented the eyes of people in society, and instead of her painting a group of people, she painted eyes in the sense of observation. It has now taken a detour into subjectivity. As

Fatemah says “The meaning of eyes can change very quickly, so it started off from being the eyes of society to maybe myself, in my own eyes.”

While Fatemah continues completing her degree abroad, and cultivating her experiences with her own art, she likes to find a balance between both instead of prioritizing one. Embracing both journeys by sharing her art as well as studying. Fatemah essentially wants her art to be expressive and relatable, “Especially to young people who may feel held back,” she says. For now, she’s happy with the exposure she’s receiving, placing herself out there with the rest of the art community, and soon enough she’ll be willing to do the same here in K-town.

TAGGING ALONG WITH TRASHTAG One cleanup at a time!

The facts have been in front of us for a while now, and it’s time to take action. According to several studies and articles published in the past couple of years, Kuwait continues to rank as one of the top countries in the world in pollution, and it is getting worse. Cue Trashtag, an inspiring initiative which kickstarted at the end of April in 2019 and is growing stronger every week!

Trashtag is a non-profit organization that is committed to fighting negative environmental impacts of marine litter and waste pollution in Kuwait. It started from a simple hashtag that spread globally. As one of the co-founders, Carina Maceira, explained “[The hashtag] was trending, it was a bunch of people that were going to different locations that were really littered. They were picking it up and taking before and after photos, then it became a challenge and our co-founder, Yousif AlShatti decided that everyone is doing it. Let’s get Kuwait mobilized, let’s get Kuwait in doing this.”

That’s when Trashtag organized their first cleanup which was at the same location where we first met them, Sulaibekhat beach. The cleanups 42

are organized on a weekly basis and are based on the most littered areas. Every week, Trashtag shares a post on their social media with information on the meeting point for any volunteers willing to join the cleanup and help out as much as they can.

The meeting point can also be a new location or one that requires a re-visit. The Trashtag team makes it even easier by providing all the necessary tools. All we had to do is bring our own reusable water bottles and a few friends.

When we first arrived at Sulaibekhat beach, we already spotted a couple of people who were picking up the litter. One of them was Nada, a regular volunteer with Trashtag, and is someone who actually carries trash bags in her own car at all times. She says “I can’t stand coming to beautiful places such as this beach that has the most amazing view and find it extremely littered.” Sulaibekhat beach is known for its mesmerizing grounds, as the flamingos were right ahead of our viewpoint, we couldn’t help but feel the same as Nada.

For their first cleanup, less than a dozen people showed up. For their second cleanup, the initiative attracted almost 30 people. “Now we have well over 200 volunteers,” says Carina, “and we have around 60 regulars. Each cleanup has around 60 to 90 people, I’d say.” From what we saw, the number of volunteers keeps on growing. Not only that, but

Trashtag are already breaking their own record on the amount of trash bags they have collected, as Carina shares “We already crushed the 1000, thankfully. We’re almost at 2000 now so that’s awesome.”

The recent visit from The Duke of Cambridge himself, Prince William, shed a huge light on the initiative as well. The founders had the pleasure to discuss some of the environmental issues that are caused by the mismanagement of waste and plastic pollution with him personally. Carina says that “It was surreal, it was really encouraging to see someone who has nothing to do essentially with Kuwait’s pollution problem, and has nothing to do with what’s going on here [be] so invested and genuinely concerned about the issue that we’re facing. And intrigued as to how we’re doing, how we started, and everything that’s been going on.”

With the amount of collected trash bags clearly growing, along with the number of volunteers and weekly cleanup meeting points, Trashtag is showing us a future that is slightly brighter and more hopeful than the one we are anticipating. It’s time to take action, and it is now or never.

How to prevent yourself losing steam within the first 24hrs of the New Year

Here we are again, another trip around the great ball of fire for planet earth, doubledouble digits. This occurrence is not likely to repeat in your lifetime, so a special sort of advice is required in this auspicious year.

By the time you read this article, you will most likely have already set your “New Year Resolution”, and broken it, 20 times over. I resolve to spend less time on my phone (you’re reading this on your smart phone). I resolve to exercise more (you’re reading this at your favorite fast food restaurant, dressed in your gym clothes). I resolve to run more (you ran alright, a few feet to your car to escape the rain). I resolve to read more (congratulations, you are nailing this one!).

The greatest error we commit when setting our resolutions is that we do not appreciate the fact that even the greatest TV show has filler episodes (greatest hits, musical, etc.) so does our life sometimes bear the resemblance of being ordinary. It is our greatest fallacy to assume that everything always goes according to plan, since we started from Go (Monopoly reference); We’ll roll the dice and end up on Mayfair, avoiding the pitfalls of jail and other less fortunate events. The moment we are 44

hit with a curve ball, we revert to our older selves and just wish to do better the next time around, like we need our resolution to start from January 1 otherwise, it’s just not as magical. It no longer bears the markings of a resolution that happens once a year, but a decision we take at any point on a dull Tuesday (because Tuesday’s are nothing more than Monday Part II).

The build-up to the Times Square ball drop or the Burj Khalifa fireworks is a clear example of the unrealistic expectations we set for our resolutions. The countdown to that one second, the change from December 31, to January 1. Think of the anticipation and excitement echoed around the globe as people festively count-down the last seconds, and then ask yourself – what exactly are the counting down to? The first “Wooo!” of the New Year will undoubtedly last over 1 second, and then we are left with a cavernous emptiness. Until we realize, this second is repeated several times over the New Year (31.5 million times to be exact).

Much like sports have transcended from being a hobby/pastime to becoming a lifestyle, so too should our resolutions be equally malleable. The goal is not to lose X amount of kilograms in a month, or a year, but rather to cut out the temptations that lead to weight gain in the first place, such as the dreaded harbingers

of bulk – the White Family (Sugar, Flour, Salt). It is not to suddenly become fluent in a new language, but to gradually add words to your vocabulary over the course of 365 days.

By raising the ceiling of expectation on how this year will be different, we set ourselves up for the fall from grace we always encounter in the first month of the year.

We’re stuck on the adage of it takes 21 days to form a habit, and 90 days to build a lifestyle. However, no one ever said those days must start on January 1st!

Diets have cheat days, gyms have rest days, so to do resolutions have unresolute-days, where we can relax the reigns of expectation and accept that at times, we don’t want to save the world, change our figure or hit the books, we just want to sit in our PJs and binge-watch our favorite show whilst stuffing our face with the latest delectable food found in this Month’s Dining Guide!

The new Macan GTS launches with a powerful engine, performance-oriented chassis, characteristic design and enhanced equipment. The 2.9-litre V6 biturbo engine delivers 380 hp (280 kW) – an increase of 20 hp (15 kW) compared with the predecessor model. Combined with the newly adapted PDK dualclutch transmission and the optional Sport Chrono package, the Macan GTS can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, three tenths faster than before. It has a top speed of 261 km/h.

Among other things, the new member of Porsche’s compact SUV family has earned the abbreviation GTS, which stands for “Gran Turismo Sport”, due to its outstanding driving dynamics. The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) damping control system has been specially tuned.

The chassis has also been lowered by 15 millimetres for greater lateral dynamics. Adaptive air suspension is available with chassis lowering by a further 10 millimeters. Combined with the standard 20-inch RS Spyder Design wheels and the generously sized cast iron brakes, the new Macan GTS impresses with the agility and responsiveness of a true sports car. As an option, deceleration can be further improved by means of the Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB) with tungsten carbide coating or the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB).

Acoustically, the standard sports exhaust system specifically adapted to the GTS accentuates the driving pleasure in the new Macan GTS. A 2.9-litre V6 engine is at the heart of the sound experience.

Its Central Turbo Layout, with two turbochargers arranged in the inner V of the engine, allows particularly direct responsiveness. The maximum torque of 520 Nm (plus 20 Nm) is available over a wide range from 1,750 to 5,000 rpm. The sportiest Macan model consumes 9.6 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres according to NEDC. The new Macan GTS also emphasizes its exceptional sporty status visually. The standard Sport Design package with new front and rear trim and striking side skirts lends the car a characteristic appearance. The front apron and front section are characterized by black painted elements – a distinguishing feature of all Porsche GTS models. The LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) and the three-dimensional rear lights with LED light bar are also darkened. The LED headlights can be optionally ordered in black with PDLS Plus.

Chassis lowered by 15 millimeters, the 20-inch RS Spyder Design wheels in satin-gloss black, the red brake callipers and the trim strips in high-gloss black also emphasise the high-performance appearance.

The color black also sets accents at the rear: Here, the diffuser and the tailpipes of the standard sports exhaust system are painted in this color.

High-quality materials such as Alcantara on the seat centre panels, the centre console armrests and door panels as well as brushed aluminium make it possible to also see and feel the sporty and elegant characteristics of the Macan GTS in the interior. The

multifunction sports steering wheel with the steering wheel rim in smooth leather and shift paddles is standard, as are the sports seats, exclusive to the GTS, with eight-way adjustment and pronounced side bolsters for stable support during dynamic cornering.

The GTS leather upholstery in Carmine Red or Crayon with additional Alcantara features and color accents, the BOSE Surround Sound system and the new smartphone tray with inductive charging function are among the many personalization options.

The modern handicraft markets

The colorful hustle and bustle of any bazaar filled with all sorts of merchandise is any day a beautiful sight. Among them the creative handicraft artists with all their specifically handmade pieces is definitely something that should not be missed.

Kuwait has recently seen a boom in this culture with the various markets and fairs that usually take place during the winter months and the emergence of hidden talents coming to the surface since then.

Held every November the British Ladies Society Bazaar has been a great platform for handicraft artists in Kuwait. They are not only a social group, but are actively involved with two charitable causes, one in the UK and one in Kuwait and the proceeds they collect go to the causes.

Another fabulous platform for artists, Artspace have been organizing the Marketspace for handicraft artists since 2017. They love conscious creatives who produce handmade, eco-friendly sustainable goods.

The event is in a synchronized dance with the seasons and they try to host one every month during the winter season.

“There is nothing more exquisite than an original work of art that is made with love.”, describes Artspace co-founder Sarah Chouari.

The Yarmouk cultural center is another great platform. They have been organizing the Yarmouk Fall Festival for 5 years and every year they host a music and handicraft bazaar as part of the festival to celebrate our diverse community of artists.

"The Big Bazaar' is another festival that has been running for 6 years and takes place on the last Thursday of November. The market celebrates the spirit of the season with holiday music and local vendors showcasing their crafts. The event also offers selected local volunteer organizations with free spaces to raise funds. “The revolution of the hand-craft market in Kuwait is an exciting trend. People are starting to want to find unique items that have been invested with time and care instead of mass produced things”, says Elaine Haidar Most artists who have been a part of these events have been testing the market for quite some time and what they have learned proves how dedication and passion can lead to create an identity that defines us.

“Patience is key, it takes time to both create a piece and at the same time to find a platform for your work”, says Ghada Rezkalla (@macrame_by_ghadarezkalla on Instagram), a talented Macrame artist. She is selftaught and finds the craft a therapeutic way to escape from stress. Ghada never follows a pattern but always lets her passion lead her as she joins knots to create 48

patterns that surprise her.

Shelby Allaho (@stitchstorycrochet) is another fiber artist who designs beautiful crochet jewelry and accessory patterns. In addition to being a crochet designer, she also collaborates with her husband Emad and have created their own line of stitchable pendants, crochets and weaving kits and her daughter on a line of handspun yarns.. “I love to create things that allow others to be creative themselves,” says Shelby.

“It’s about finding the right market for yourself, candles are perfect gifts so I have come to realize that corporates can become my best customers”, says Sweta (@asoykuwait) . She introduced handmade soy wax candles to the market of Kuwait, with the hope to bring in environment friendly candles that are known for their lovely fragrances.

Handmade natural soaps have also been well received in Kuwait’s market. Darras Odilie (@Bo_ Savon) explains "It’s only been my consistent passion and love for soap making that has pushed me to find time to create natural soaps". She has been creating handmade natural soaps with olive oil in fancy shapes,

beauty oils with organic sesame oil and geranium rosat oil and natural bath salts.

Nihad Nabil (@silvertosilver) is a silver jeweler who uses sterling silver 925 and semi-precious stones to create jewelry inspired by the middle eastern culture and Islamic art. She knows that “It is only due to the honest work she puts into each piece; has she been recognized”. She has also been collaborating with calligraphy artists to create beautiful but meaningful pieces aswell Sidney Scallan (Sidney-Scallan-Art on Facebook) is another artist who has been an artist since her university days and has had successful exhibitions in Seoul, South Africa and Canada. Her various experiments in mixed media art over the years has led her to discover a craft niche in art, beadwork and recycled elements. Sidney believes her combination of wood and stone that creates a natural synergy for her work has helped her create colorful and multidimensional pieces.

and Beatriz who together (@craftymama.kw and @ alicexmas) create festival crafts and they use various mediums for their work. “Explore different mediums to find out what works best for you” would be their advice.

Then there are artists like Emad Allaho (@ Ewood_q8) who has discovered happiness from showing the process of his work to others. Emad Allaho is a woodworker by passion and believes that wood is always a living material, and using wood for decorative pieces brings life to any place it is in. He custom designs his work and creates beautiful unique furniture, accessories and kitchenware.

Mayyar (@mayyaraswad) does not create with the motive to just sell. All his handicrafts are inspired from nature is made from objects people throw away. Mayyar points out that “Simplicity and creativity in everything is what my process is all about”. His only dream is for his work to be found at a museum, one day.

Stephanie (@stephart_kwt) is another artist who creates handmade home accessories and décor from wood. Her work is simple but eye-catching signs. Since the idea to create something out from wood had encountered she has spent a lot of time researching to teach herself what best way to work on wood. “All it takes is a little bit of time and effort”, says Stephanie Screen printing artist Carolina (@lacarodesigns) is another artist who has introduced her homeware label called La Caro designs that features hand screen printed designs with her line of tea towels, cushions, tote bags and wall hangings. She creates all her prints from ecofriendly ink and is always on the lookout for inspiration from the community and culture around.

The Untitled (@theuntitledbag_kw) creates ecofriendly souvenirs that tourists can take home in their mission to eliminate plastics. They incorporate Kuwait’s story in their bags with images of the culture and different landmarks. “Find a meaning or mission for your work, and you will surely be rewarded, describes Tyas.

Create (@create.kuwait) is another initiative with a mission. Create displays upcycled handbags and t-shirts that could have gone to waste. With the motto to give new life, create strives not to add more waste but find a creative way to reuse.

“I’m inspired by a culture of arts that is related to myths and tales”, says Zainab (@Zainabart915), who creates simple yet powerful abstracts using paint on wood, paper or canvas. Zainab believes in showcasing symbols in bright colors that have a purpose or meaning Philip (@philip_kamble) is another artist who uses only paints. He specializes in watercolors and has based most of his work on the landmarks of Kuwait as seen in the 60s and 70s. Philip explains “I want to encourage more artists to embrace basic techniques in their work because sometimes a simple watercolor painting is all you need to catch the respect as an artist” Meryl Mathew is a Logistician by profession, a writer by passion and an upcycling hobbyist. THE (SECRET) BENEFIT(S) OF ADVERSITY

Find the strength in your pain

"Never view your challenges as a disadvantage. Instead, it's important for you to understand that your experience facing and overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages." -Michelle Obama Adversity is not generally welcome. In fact, we try not to experience hard things, or we work to make the hard things go away. Doesn’t work. As a member of the human race every single one of us is going to experience both the good and the bad of life. When it rains, the good, the bad, the rich, the poor, the wicked, the righteous, the faithful, and the unfaithful get wet. It doesn’t matter how you live - you’re going to get rained on. The issues of life are common to every single individual on the planet. Personal circumstances may cause these experiences to be more or less difficult to endure, but we are not excused from this shared reality, whatever those circumstances. The rich and the poor deal with cancer. The wicked and the righteous lose loved ones, everyone suffers accidents, and we all deal with tragedy and trauma. No one is immune.

Years ago, I saw a client who wanted some help to be more effective in her professional life.

She reported that she struggled with conflict and just felt “small” compared to others. When we did the intake, I learned that from ages 13 to 22 she had experienced a severe eating disorder. Over that period, she reported, she’d been under the care of Canada’s foremost expert on eating disorders, had stayed for significant periods of time in residential treatment facilities, and had nearly died on more than one occasion. “But,” she said ruefully, “I didn’t get better until I decided on my own that I didn’t want to live like that anymore.” I asked her, “What strengths did you need to be so good at having an eating disorder?” She looked puzzled. “Strengths?

That was a horrible time in my life. What strengths?”

I agreed. It was a horrible, painful time in her life AND she obviously had something going on or she would have caved to the attempts to fix the eating disorder. She never did. She got better only when she decided to get better. I sent her home with the task of making a list of the strengths she needed to be so successful at being eating disordered. She came back with a long list. “Perseverance, determination, stubbornness, cunning, patience, independence, focus, and creativity were just a few of the words on her list.

“That was a terrible period in my life. Painful, filled with real angst, and suffering, and just really dark. I wouldn’t ever want to go back there, but I’d never thought about how exactly I managed to outwit everyone who was determined that I was going to eat. They couldn’t make me until I decided I would eat.” We talked about how those strengths could be harnessed to deal with the difficulties in her professional life. She got it.

“If I can manage at 15 years old to refuse to be intimidated by some hooha doctor who powered up and ordered me to eat, I can deal with pretty much anyone.” We figured out what that would look like, and then she said, “I never thought about something good coming of those awful years. Whenever I was reminded of those years, I just tried to push the memories away, thankful that I survived. This past week, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about those years, and while I wouldn’t wish that kind of suffering on anyone, I have to admit I was pretty badass. Maybe I could rule the world if I took what I learned from that adversity and channelled it into solving my current problems. I’m kind of stoked to go to work tomorrow. I know I’ll be thinking and acting differently.”

Adversity is an experience common to us all.

When we accept that pain is inevitable and focus instead on finding the resources we need to weather the storm, we minimize suffering and maximize the internal strength and fortitude developed in the

crucible of that adversity.

Bottom line? The painful experiences of life have the potential to provide strength to face future adversity. At the very least these experiences offer the opportunity to compare. “Is this as bad as [insert painful past experience]? No. Then I’m good.

I can do this.”

And…you can. Think about this…what strengths have you earned in the past that you’re not utilizing for today’s adversity? What a shame to waste the experiences of the past that might be the foundation for navigating today’s adversity like a boss.

The accompanying campaign includes work by the trailblazing 3D makeup artist Ines Alpha, from the main visuals to an exclusive Snapchat filter.

Billie Eilish burst onto the music scene in 2016 and is now one of the most sought-after artists in the world. For the H&M merch collection, the designs feature Billie’s official logos and capture her signature oversized style – long, boxy t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirt dresses, joggers and t-shirt dresses in a colour palette of cream, black, pale green and pops of neon green.

The overall vibe is laidback and accessible yet edgy,

and all of the clothing has been made from materials sourced in a more sustainable method. Accessories include beanies, bucket hats, socks and a bum bag.

“We’re super excited about this merch collection drop. Billie Eilish is obviously an inspiring artist, but also someone who a lot of people around the world admire for her personal style and empowering way of expressing her values. NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

The 5 F’s of planning for the New Year By bazaar staff

It’s that time of the year again: New Year’s Resolutions. And while it is easy enough to see the inherent problems with arbitrary goal dates and starting points, the point remains, there seems to be nothing better for starting over as starting at a perceived beginning. So, in light of the coming New Year, and the inevitable onslaught of people looking to make new changes with the start of the New Year, here they are; your top 5 conundrums to making the most life-altering list of all – New Year’s Resolutions.

Free Time – Make no mistake, as another year passed, you just got older; one more revolution around the sun. It is officially time to start doing that thing you always meant to do that you haven’t gotten around to. Unfortunately, you may find that real-life trying may just prove that you had been right to avoid it all along.

Apparently, I will just never be the ballerina I thought I would be, but then, if you were ready to deal with that kind of potential rejection, you would have tried earlier.

So go for it if you are bold, but don’t be surprised if you are ill-prepared!

The Fisique (Ok I jest, the physique) – To be honest, you are probably best to make your New Year’s health resolutions mid-year, that way by the time NYE rolls around, you are already on a roll. Yes, it is pretty hard to change speeds halfway through your holiday dinner. Plus, if you think about it, there are probably a lot of reasons why you set yourself up for failure if you just set them on January 1st because it is the years end. At the very least, the machines at the gym are going to be absolutely packed with people who made the same commitments. Give it three weeks, this will pass! If you are poised to start a new health regime of working out and eating better at the start of the New Year, stay aware – danger lurks everywhere!

Friends – There is no better time to say…out with the old friends and in with the new than the start of the New Year. If you get the chance, exit your New Year’s Eve party just after midnight, that way they cannot say you haven’t seen them since the previous year – and then run. The downside is you may be forced to make new friends. Or just become a hermit. That works too.

Financial – Let’s be honest, you’re getting older. That money isn’t saving itself. It is great to be able to go away on every little vacation you get

a chance to, but at some point, you are going to have to mind your money (Oooh, unless you make traveling your business, in which case, keep going!).

There is nothing more fulfilling than noticing your bank account inflating by virtue of you holding out on things you would have previously partaken in. On the other hand, going out and having fun is good too.

This is a tough one. I leave it to your discretion.

Family – When it comes to family we can all likely put a little more love into the world. For all the respect, admiration, mutual frustration we have with our family members, there is little doubt that for most of us, they are the most important people in our lives. Have you slid into a difficult situation with a brother? Perhaps some unresolved issues with your father? Perhaps you haven’t been as good as you could be to your mother? Well, simply put, there is no time better than now to let them know how you feel and make that move towards being a better family member yourself. I challenge you – especially if you are feeling justified for your frustrations – to simply let it go, and be the bigger better person. Your New Year will thank you!

ENTOURAGE VS SOLDIERS

A historical job description

Since humanity can remember, there have been kings, queens and leaders.

Attached to their presumed power, were different kinds of people. They were called by several titles: Chamberlains, entourage, court jesters etc. Boomers called them: Posse. Today, we call them: Clout.

Without diving into a long article about abuse of power and other things, let’s take a lighter stroll, it is after all the beginning of the year and we want to start off with a great vibe, so here it goes. Cue Irish music with intruding violin to set the tone.

People in power are often burdened by a long list of decisions to make, on the daily. Every step they take or word they utter, can impact thousands of people in their court or under their ruling. A scary thing, if you try and quantify it. Imagine getting into an argument with the king next door and BAM! Your ties are severed, only to realize after your blood cools down that you needed to keep it diplomatic because their lumberjacks provide your kingdom with the best quality of wood. Now you have all nine carpenters in your small kingdom and subsequently the remaining of their family (that were not affected by the plague) without wood to work with to earn a living.

The burden of power created a need for people in those positions to be distracted; Entertained. It is a way to forget the current events and engage in heartfelt and light forms of social engagements and arts. Even though nowadays, entertainment comes in all shapes and forms, the original form of entertainment was and will always remain: people.

People in power would always surround themselves with people. People to help them with daily tasks such as the chamberlains and the maids. People to have conversations with and discuss day to day socials, such as the entourage.

People to entertain them and their guests such as the court jesters.

All three types of people (and there are way more) served one purpose for the ruler which is entertainment. That was key: it keeps him or her in a great mood in hopes of waking up into the cycle the next day and have enough mental energy to make great beneficial moves.

Yet, when enemies come knocking on the kingdom’s door, a global war or even an uprising within the kingdom, these people are the first to be disposed of. The king or queen would assemble the soldiers first and decide on the best course of action to preserve the kingdom and its interests.

There have been zero cases in history where a raging war is knocking on the doors and the king 58

or queen ran in the court looking for the court jesters to hear a joke. It’s just the truth.

When a person of power is faced with dire circumstances, he or she looks for people who can lead under their vision, take some of the heat and get results. This is why soldiers held the highest esteem in their respective kingdoms.

A soldier was seen as a defender, a brave soul and most importantly, a person acting under the ruler’s consent and blessing.

Today, as the world stands with all that is happening, people of this small rock that is ever so getting away from its sun (I had to google that fact, scared the bees wax out of my brain) are looking up to comedians as a source of truth, power and heroism because soldiers are seen as a killing tool to people abusing power (couldn’t keep the promise I made at the beginning of this piece).

Yet, I find it boggling to see the same people missing the opportunity to rebalance their own worlds at least.

You are the king or queen of your own kingdom.

That kingdom being your career, life, dreams whatever! In order to preserve your ruling over your kingdom, you need soldiers. You don’t need court jesters, maids, chamberlains or entourage.

But you absolutely need soldiers. With your own kingdom you need to abuse your power. You need to attach yourself hard to the throne. The only way to do so is by building an army of people who are willing to fight for your throne when the time is right. You need them, remember that.

And you will in return, do the same for your soldiers. But make sure you are a soldier in their personal army as well, because if not: you’re merely a court jester and all you will ever be in their story … is a joke.

And that’s just awful.

The resolution-free way to achieve your goals By bazaar staff

New Year’s resolutions can be demoralizing. You start the year feeling optimistic and full of hope, by March you realize that maybe you weren’t very realistic. Most of us want to lose weight, save more money and devote more of our energy to our hobbies. Instead, think of the year as 52 weeks with small goals that you can set and achieve with small and steady incremental improvements.

The weekend is a golden opportunity to get things done and plan ahead for your week. If you have already thought about the things you want to do and have made the decisions, doing the things will just become an automatic thing.

I use a combination of paper and digital tools for my planning. Every Saturday I set my weekly goals in my Bullet Journal. It might be anything from making an appointment at the salon (selfcare) to taking a walk three times a week (health) or writing an article (work). If something has a

clear deadline, I will add it to my Reminders app on the phone and set the time for it.

During the week, as soon as the alarm goes off, I just complete the task and tick it off as done. It helps me avoid wasting time in deciding what to tackle and when because I do it all in one go on the weekend.

A large and daunting lifestyle change, that is surprisingly manageable, is when you break it down into 52 small mini changes. Want to lose weight? Focusing on half a kilogram loss each week is doable. Always wanted to learn French?

A couple of hours of study sessions can be scheduled in most of our schedules. Trying to save up for a vacation? Putting aside some cash each week in an inaccessible account is going to be easier than trying to save up the whole amount in one go.

Meal planning and prepping is another lifechanger. Some weeks I will prep meals for the entire week, but every week I will plan what we will be having for lunch every day. To be honest, it is easier for me because we have Thursdays for pizza night, Tuesday is grilled chicken night and so on. One less decision means more time

saved to do things I want to do.

You can take this one step further by streamlining your wardrobe decisions as well.

Already know that you have an important meeting on Monday? Decide on what you will be wearing on Saturday.

Delegating is another weapon in your arsenal that you might not be using. I have been using the JustClean app for months now. I schedule the pickups the day before I do laundry, so by the time it is dry, there is someone knocking at my door to magically make the creases go away. If you can have something delivered instead of driving to get it, do that too. Cleaning is just not your thing?

Outsource it! Hiring someone to do it for you can be more expensive, but if you use the time to develop your skills or head to the gym the career and health benefits will be worth it in the long run.

Time is a finite resource. Use it wisely. You don’t need grand resolutions, you need smart planning, small milestones and intelligent use of your energy and you will find that you can move mountains in a year.

MASERATI X GIOVANNI SOLDINI Innovation on board the Multi 70 trimaran By bazaar staff

Maserati has entered a new era of innovation and launched a process for the transfer of technological know-how from the world of cars to the world of high-performance yachts: the engineers of the Maserati Innovation Lab in Modena and Giovanni Soldini, skipper of Maserati Multi 70 [read ‘settanta’], have taken center stage.

This is a collaboration between people moved by passion, adrenaline and the search for maximum performance, values that have been shared by Maserati and Giovanni Soldini since 2012, the year in which the collaboration began and that goes beyond sponsorship.

The research project applied the aerodynamic knowledge and virtual analysis tools, usually used when developing Maserati’s cars, to the Maserati Multi 70 trimaran. This, and special hydrodynamic profiles, boosts the yacht performance and aerodynamics, and enhances its flight attributes.

The Maserati engineers analyzed the data from Maserati Multi 70's latest races to identify the key parameters of its motion. They made an in-depth study of the craft's current configurations to identify possible areas of improvement using advanced CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations, able to predict the behavior of the complex flows created around the trimaran.

Virtual tools were also used to test different hull streamlining and sheet configurations, on the one hand to reduce the boat's resistance to the air and on the other to increase the efficiency of its sails by controlling extremity phenomena.

The outcome of these studies was a reduction of about 5% in the entire vessel's aerodynamic penetration (Cx) coefficient. What's more, improving the flows around the craft enables the sails to work more efficiently, increasing propulsion force by 4% with a less than 1% rise in heeling force. With these results, the yacht's cruising speed could now exceed 43 knots in ideal conditions.

By applying its technical expertise even to sailing, Maserati yet again reaffirms its aptitude for innovation, adopting Maserati Multi 70 as a continually evolving "laboratory boat”.

The Maserati Innovation Lab is the heart of the brand's technological research, development and design. The brand’s engineering hub, on via Emilia Ovest in Modena, recently opened its doors to share its key role in the development of new Maserati models with the outside world for the first time.

It is at this facility of excellence that all Maserati models of today and tomorrow are designed, with digital processes that support the product's development, applying the exclusive Maserati formula which adopts an integrated approach to prioritize the human factor right from the initial phases; customer-focus is incorporated in the world of virtual simulation with an exclusive hardware-software mix.

AI IS MOVING TOO FAST

And that is a good thing

2019 was a great year for seeing what AI could do. Waymo deployed selfdriving taxis to actual paying customers in Arizona. Bots from OpenAI and DeepMind beat the top professionals in two major esports games. A deep-learning algorithm performed as well as doctors--and sometimes better--at spotting lung cancer tumors in medical imaging.

But as for what AI should do, 2019 was terrible.

Amazon's facial recognition software? Racist, according to MIT researchers, who reported that the tech giant's algorithms misidentify nearly a third of dark-skinned women's faces (while demonstrating near-perfect accuracy for light-skinned men's). Emotion detection, used by companies such as WeSee and HireVue to perform threat assessments and screen job applicants? Hogwash, says the Association for Psychological Science. Even the wonky field of natural language processing took a hit, when a state-of-the-art system called GPT-2--capable of generating hundreds of words of convincing text after only a few phrases of prompting-was deemed too risky to release by its own creators, OpenAI, which feared it could be used "maliciously" to propagate fake news, hate speech, or worse.

2019, in other words, was the year that two things became unavoidably clear about the rocket ship of innovation called artificial intelligence. One: It's accelerating faster than most of us expected. Two: It's got some serious screws loose.

That's a scary realization to have, given that we're collectively strapped into this rocket instead of watching it from a safe distance. But AI's anxiety-inducing progress has an upside: for perhaps the first time, the unintended consequences of a disruptive technology are visible in the moment, instead of years or even decades later. And that means that while we may be moving too quickly for comfort, we can actually grab the throttle--and steer.

It's easy to forget that before 2012, the technology we now call AI--deep learning with artificial neural networks--for all practical purposes didn't exist. The concept of using layers of digital connections (organized in a crude approximation of biological brain tissue)

to learn pattern-recognition tasks was decades old, but largely stuck in an academic rut. Then, in September 2012, a neural network designed by students of University of Toronto professor and future "Godfather of deep learning" Geoffrey Hinton unexpectedly smashed records on a highly regarded computer-vision challenge called ImageNet. The test asks software to correctly identify the content of millions of images: say, a picture of a parrot, or a guitar.

The students' neural net made half as many errors as the runner-up.

Suddenly, deep learning "worked." Within five years, Google and Microsoft had hired scores of deep-learning experts and were dubbing themselves "AI first" companies. And it wasn't just Big Tech: a 2018 global survey of more than 2,000 companies by consulting firm McKinsey found that more than three-quarters of them had already incorporated AI or were undergoing pilot programs to do so.

It took modern smartphones 10 years to "eat the world," as Andreessen Horowitz analyst Benedict Evans famously put it; The web, about 20. But in just five years, AI has gone from laboratory curiosity to economic force-contributing an estimated $2 trillion to global GDP in 2017 and 2018, according to accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. "We're certainly working on a compressed time cycle when it comes to the speed of AI evolution," says R. David Edelman, a former technology adviser to President Barack Obama who now leads AI policy research at MIT. This unprecedented pace has helped drive both the advances and the agita around artificial intelligence. Between 54% and 75% of the general public, according to a 2019 survey of Americans by the global marketing consultancy Edelman in collaboration with the World Economic Forum, believes that AI will hurt the poor and benefit the wealthy, increase social isolation, and lead to a "loss of human intellectual capabilities." A third of respondents even think that deepfakes--creepily convincing phony videos of celebrities, government officials, or everyday people, generated by deep-learning networks--could contribute to "an information war that, in turn, might lead to a shooting war."

So how should society respond, without resorting to what MIT's Edelman (no relation to the consultancy) calls "latter-day Luddism"?

work for the actual Luddites, who tried it during the Industrial Revolution. But the opposite--a blind faith that innovation will eventually work its own kinks out-won't do either. (Exhibit A: the entire planet, after 100 years of carbon-spewing vehicles.)

This is where the rocket-ship throttle comes into play. The standard timeline of technological innovation follows what's known as an "S curve": a slow start, followed by a rising slope as the tech catches on, and ending with a leveling off as it becomes ubiquitous. With previous worldeating technologies such as the automobile or the smartphone, unintended consequences didn't become urgently visible until we were well up the slope, or even on the plateau, of the S curve. Mass adoption of cars, for example, set off several slow-motion catastrophes: not just climate change, but also a weakening of public transportation, decades' worth of distorted urban planning, and incredible carnage. And by the time psychologist Jean Twenge asserted, in 2017, that smartphones may have "destroy[ed] a generation" by encouraging social media addiction and anxiety, nearly 3 billion people were already using them.

In both cases, the concrete had set before we realized anything was wrong. But by going from

"nowhere" to "seemingly everywhere" in roughly half a decade, AI is actually offering us a real-time feedback mechanism for course-correcting.

Can we engineer neural networks to be more interpretable and less like mysterious "black boxes"? How do we systematically test deeplearning systems for unethical biases? Should an equivalent of the FDA or EPA be established for vetting AI practices and products? "The fact that it's changing rapidly [is] bringing a certain urgency to the asking of these questions," says Nick Obradovich, a scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development who studies the social challenges brought on by AI. This real-time reckoning with AI is already underway. At its 2019 I/O conference, Google unveiled a system called TCAV that acts as a kind of "bulls*** detector" for deep-learning networks.

TCAV can help!) In May, 42 countries, including the U.S., formally adopted policy guidelines developed by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), "Agreeing to uphold international standards that aim to ensure AI systems are designed to be robust, safe, fair, and

trustworthy." Earlier this year, MIT researchers created a whole new scientific discipline--"machine behavior"--designed to investigate how algorithms and humans interact "in the wild." The paper was coauthored by two dozen experts from fields as diverse as economics, political science, robotics, and sociology.

"At some point in the future we will have some regulation of the development and use of algorithms in our lives," says Obradovich, who is one of the machine-behavior coauthors. In the meantime, "there's a very big role for well-trained social scientists to [play by stepping] in and starting to uncover problems that are occurring, and might occur, right around the corner."

This emerging attitude toward innovative tech could spur us to make AI not just "work," but behave.

It could establish how we respond to other new disruptive technologies, too--such as 5G internet, cryptocurrency, self-driving cars, and CRISPR gene editing. "This ideal--of codesigning systems and [social] policy--can be a repeatable formula for new innovations," says Edelman. "In fact, it probably has to [be]." After all, AI won't be the last rocket we'll find ourselves strapped to. And no one's got "the right stuff" to pilot it except us.

Instagram will remove 'likes' from posts for some US users

Facebook Inc.'s Instagram plans to remove the number of "likes" visible on posts for some users in the U.S. to decrease competitive pressure among people on the photo-sharing service.

Instagram has been hiding like counts in some markets since April, beginning in Canada, and later expanding to Japan and Brazil. The U.S. is one of Instagram's largest markets with more than 106 million users, according to data analyst EMarketer.

Instagram boss Adam Mosseri told NBC in October that the effort was meant to "Make Instagram feel less pressurized, to make it less of a competition." Users will still be able to see the likes they receive on their posts if they want, but those metrics won't be visible to others on Instagram, the company said.

Mosseri said the test will begin next week. He announced the plan Friday at a 68

conference in San Francisco sponsored by Wired magazine.

Instagram's follower counts and likes have made it one of the top places online to compare one's popularity with others, especially among teens and young adults.

The company has tried for years to combat the competitive trend by promoting good role models via posts on its @instagram account, hoping to reflect the parts of the app that are about creativity and art as opposed to self-promotion. Still, striving for the metrics was irresistible for its users, contributing to mental health issues and other ills, like users paying for fake likes and followers from bots.

Even some of the app's most prolific celebrities have said a service without likes may be healthier for its users.

"It would be really beneficial," said Kim Kardashian, speaking at the New York Times DealBook conference. Kardashian, who has 151 million Instagram followers and regularly receives more than 1 million likes on her

posts, said the Instagram team has been discussing the changes with select users to get feedback, "and that makes me happy."

Instagram, Facebook and Twitter have been at the center of debate around issues like smartphone addiction and online health in recent years. As a result, product "health" has become a priority at the social media companies, which are trying to balance the need to drive user growth and engagement with the outside perception that they are contributing to problems such as online bullying.

Instagram, for example, has also announced a feature where users can limit the amount of time they spend on the app in a given day. Apple Inc. built a similar "time spent" feature into its iPhone software, and Google offers tools like this for Android phones. Twitter has a beta version of its main product that hides engagement metrics, including likes and retweets, from user replies and interactions.

A BEACON IN CAIRO Mai Abu El Naga gives us a peak into her world By bazaar staff

Only 22 years old, and currently a 5th year medical student at Ain Shams University in Cairo, Mai Abu El Naga is also an illustrator, muralist, and a painter. Additionally, she juggles all of that with creating wearable art pieces for Scarfistry that is full of hand painted scarves and illustrated t-shirts.

Her current and ongoing project is the illustration of Egyptian and Arabic Idioms, which were many of the things that we spoke to Mai about.

How did your passion for illustrations begin?

I first started illustrating a long time ago. Ever since I was a child, I just discovered how I’m mostly able to express myself through drawings or illustrations. Once I started taking this subject a little bit more seriously, I started delving more into the art world and I taught myself most of the techniques that I use. I started doing oil paintings, acrylics, and exploring different media in general.

Then digital art, which came in recently, around two years ago because I felt with the developing world and everything being fast paced, people want what speaks to them in a more digital manner. It’s just the way that the lines are neater, it’s not to say that digital art is necessarily better than fine art or the other way around, it’s that they're two very different mediums, and to me this was something that I wanted to explore.

What are you inspired by the most?

I’d say that I’m mostly inspired by visuals. If I’m just walking on the street and I randomly see a scene that I think strikes me in some way I'd probably photograph it and then it would inspire some kind of idea in my mind. I’m also quite inspired by cultural practices; Egypt being a country that is just full of culture inspires me in so many ways. When it comes to food, for example, when it comes to our general cultural and religious practices, this is mostly where I draw my inspiration from.

Tell us about the series of idioms you’ve been working on. How did it all start?

This idea started with the global initiative called ‘Inktober’. It’s basically where artists from all around the world try to create an illustration every day of the month of October, and every year I join it

with a different theme. But this year, I really wanted to create a theme that would reach Egyptians, since my target audience is mostly Egyptian. So, I overheard a conversation once between two people at a cafe and one of them was telling the other “‫ ”اشرتي دماغك‬which basically translates into “Buy your head,” and it just hit me how so many of our expressions and our words have a very different literal meaning from the figurative one.

How we tend to use all these words all the time.

I felt like it really represents how, even though they are odd, somehow it represents how smart we are in portraying our feelings through these very odd idioms. For example, if you say “‫عارص عىل‬ ‫ ”نفيس ملونة‬which basically translates into “I’ll squeeze a lemon on myself,” this just portrays the idea of feeling bitter and having to tolerate something that you don’t really want to.

How do you define culture within your art?

For instance, with the Egyptian idiom series, by collecting all the different idioms with people throughout the month, I managed to collect over 70 idioms. Then, every time when I would filter them out, I noticed how many of them have food items included, and it hit me how we use the idea of food in a lot of our conversations. That shows how big of an impact food has.

Why did you decide to start creating wearable art with scarves and t-shirts specifically?

As far as mediums go, I’m a person who likes to explore a lot of different mediums. The idea of scarves started around three years ago. I wanted to create a brand for myself that would include both art and fashion. For someone who wanted to display artworks as a wearable item, I felt like scarves were the best way to display that. You can style them in different ways, they really make up a large part of any outfit, so I felt that scarves are just the perfect clothing item for that. I do customized scarves; People anywhere from all over the world can order a certain theme, and I will create a design based on that. For example, a favorite TV show or a favorite city, they just give me the theme and I create the design, and then they receive their customized scarf. I also release different lines every now and then.

Director Martin Scorsese's mob epic has been named the year's best picture by the National Board of Review

The award for the sprawling drama, which stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, gives a boost to Netflix in its ongoing effort to land its first-ever Oscar for best picture. But in what has thus far been a fairly wide open Oscar race, the critics organization spread its love to other top contenders as well.

Quentin Tarantino was named best director for Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood, which also earned Brad Pitt a supporting actor win.

Renee Zellweger earned the best actress prize for the Judy Garland biopic Judy. Adam Sandler, who is considered a long-shot for an Oscar nod in a competitive year, earned the best actor award for his turn as a diamond merchant in the gonzo crime drama Uncut Gems.

The morning after it earned six Gotham Awards, Netflix made a similarly strong showing 72

with the National Board of Review, with six of its films earning recognition across a number of categories, including the divorce drama Marriage Story, the Hollywood outsider dramedy Dolemite is My Name and the documentaries American Factory, The Black Godfather and Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese.

Indie film distributor A24, which dominated the announcement of the independent Spirit Award contenders, also earned National Board of Review attention for six of its releases, including Uncut Gems, Waves, Midsommar, The Last Man in San Francisco, The Farewell and The Souvenir. The first two titles were listed among the group's 10 best films of the year, while the other four were included in the organization's picks for top 10 indie films alongside Give Me Liberty, A Hidden Life, Judy, The Nightingale, The Peanut Butter Falcon and Wild Rose.

A few films considered to be in the mix for various Oscar categories were overlooked entirely, however, including Joker, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Little Women, Bombshell,

Harriet and The Two Popes.

The board's selections are a precursor to a slew of other awards and nominations soon to come as Oscar season kicks into high gear. Later this week, both the New York and Los Angeles film critics associations will announce their year-end awards. On Monday, the Golden Globes nominations will be announced, with the Screen Actors Guild nods landing two days later and other key guild nominations following in January.

With an unusually accelerated schedule, Oscar nominations voting will open January 2.

Founded in 1909, the National Board of Review describes itself as a "Select group of film enthusiasts, filmmakers, professionals and academics of varying ages and backgrounds," though the association's taste is often at odds with other critics and industry groups.

Last year, the board's top pick, Green Book, went on to win the Oscar for best picture. But generally speaking, while the National Board of Review's best film picks have often subsequently landed best picture nods, they have only occasionally predicted the eventual winner.

BEST OF 2019 CULTURE

OK Gen Z, the boomers were listening this year, sort of

Her voice is weary yet chilling, telling us she is not complicit in a world edging toward destruction. She's still in her teens, an inheritor of generations leaving her the burdens of global warming, economic inequality and a ravenous social media that thrills her even as it exploits and strips away the tender gifts of her youth.

Zendaya as Rue Bennett in the HBO drama Euphoria is a prescription-drug-addicted high schooler wandering through the wreckage of sexting, statutory rape, body shaming, mass shootings and lives playing out on smartphones, where avatars and parallel realities prompt one of her friends to muse: "I don't think I have an attention span for real life anymore."

Euphoria is a stark dive into Gen Z, those born into a post-9/11 planet of rising tides, starving polar bears, TikTok videos, selfies, invasive algorithms and the specter of the YouTube star. They are the latest iteration in an America whose sense of itself is often marked by generational divides between baby boomers, Gen Xers, millennials and teens like Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old Swedish climate activist who admonished Congress and U.N. world leaders for not doing a better job at preserving the planet.

It has been a year of skirmishes between young and old. From Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez jolting C-SPAN with her progressive politics to the resurfacing (yes, really) of the Brady Bunch stars to celebrate the show's 50th anniversary. We hang in that surreal balance. Rifts between generations are part of the natural order, but these days the differences echo with existential questions over climate change and how artificial intelligence and other technologies will reshape the way we live. Even the sisters in the Disney blockbuster Frozen 2 must contend with environmental damage wrought by their elders.

Will Miami disappear this century under rising waters? Will the robots we create subsume us? Will we endure endless superhero reboots? Disappear into our virtual reality headsets? Will Mark Zuckerberg and his ilk mine every sacred piece of our identity? Such questions for younger generations are not rhetorical.

Frankenstein is here; the Black Mirror is eerily ascendant.

Anxiety over the future is seeping into a cultural landscape altered in recent years by the MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements. The Trump presidency, with its impeachment troubles, anti-immigration fury and multiplying lies, has divided the country, distorting our reality and cheapening the creeds that made us a nation. One can understand why the Gen Z characters in Euphoria pedal through suburban neighborhoods numbed and perplexed.

this year. "But I understand a good percent of it. Rue says in the first episode something like, 'We just showed up here without a map or compass.' And it's true, because we don't know what the ... we're doing.

Nobody actually knows what they're doing. Imagine growing up in social media and being a child. It's not easy. It's confusing. And it's uncomfortable. It's a lot of things. It's created by the very people that call us the zombies or whatever. It's like, we're the byproduct of this ... , you know?"

The air between generations has been arrowed with condescension and dismissive tweets for a while.

But GIFs and memes this year poking fun and outrage at baby boomers tapped into a deeper anxiety. The "OK boomer" social media tag was a jab at a post-World War II generation that millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) and Gen Zers (roughly 1997-2012) regard as entitled, affluent and blind to the consequences of decades of technological advances and environmental degradation even as dystopian films and literature have flourished.

The young viewed boomers as a cold-blooded and calculating Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones.

Boomers had their own characterizations of Gen Z: smartphone-swooning snowflakes. Millennials were caught in between, and Gen Xers floated in their own

orbit. Suspicion played out across generations like an episode of Succession, where the young Roys, stewing in spoiled privilege, maneuver to outwit and unseat their cranky, toxic patriarch.

Much of the criticism against boomers was in satire and jest. Some was more pointed, including Blink-182's song "Generational Divide" with the lyrics: "All we needed was your lifeline. (Is it better? Is it better now?)." Social media amplified and democratized "OK boomer" in a time when the calling out and muting of enemies in a growing "cancel culture" allows younger generations to peel back the masks and reveal the prevailing sins of those in power. It is mass reckoning carried out by TikTok and Twitter.

Such an atmosphere is informing politics, college campuses and the entertainment industry. Director Martin Scorsese unleashed Marvel-fan wrath when he said that superhero movies resembled more an amusement park ride than serious cinema. His comments pointed not only to a generational gap between Scorsese and Suicide Squad cosplayers but to how computer graphics and special effects are reimagining movies for audiences who minute by minute live in their screens.

Cinema is rapidly changing, much like it did in the 1970s when independent filmmakers, including

a young Scorsese, upended Hollywood with realism.

Today, technology has given us cosmic fantasy. It has also splintered how and where we watch films and TV. Entertainment common ground between generations is shrinking as each seeks shows, podcasts and video streams that speak directly to them and less to the wider world. This raises questions about shared narratives and the future of art, expression and identity. The trend will accelerate with the streaming wars between Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+ and other platforms.

It is a progression changed by, but as old as, time.

Baby boomers cut their teeth on vinyl records and Easy Rider; Gen Xers had Friends and Reality Bites; millennials watched The OC and The Social Network; and Gen Z is only too familiar with news of school shootings appearing on their social media feeds and turning themselves into avatars and doppelgangers for 15-second TikTok videos.

Yet there are things that transcend and bind generations: Star Wars. The Simpsons. Game of Thrones. The Office. Even Mister Rogers, portrayed

by Tom Hanks in the new film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

A restlessness among the young has spread to our politics, but older generations still hold sway. Pete Buttigieg, a 37-year-old millennial, is the youngest major candidate among Democrats in a presidential race whose top contenders include Elizabeth Warren, 70, a boomer, and Joe Biden, 77, and Bernie Sanders, 78, both pre-boomers. The winds are shifting, but it may take another four years before someone born after MTV was launched moves into the White House.

Gender and cultural equations are also beginning to be redrawn along generational lines although, like politics, not as quickly as many would like. Women made critically acclaimed films this year, including those by thirtysomething directors Greta Gerwig (Little Women) and Lulu Wang (The Farewell). But no female directors were nominated for the Golden Globes.

The youngest of the five males nominated was Todd Phillips, 48, and the oldest was Scorsese, 77.

There has been incremental progress along racial lines. Shows like Insecure, Atlanta and black-ish explore the lives of young African Americans. A rising generation of black playwrights, including Jeremy O. Harris and Jackie Sibblies Drury, are laying bare the caustic legacy of prejudice and slavery in new and riveting language.

Fresh Off the Boat, now heading into its final season, paved the way not only for last year's Crazy Rich Asians but the 2019 films Always Be My Maybe and The Farewell, which showed fresh ways of depicting the experiences of young Asian Americans.

And while Latino representation in pop culture is still abysmal, especially with Jane the Virgin ending its fiveseason run this year, a new generation is emerging, with pivotal roles in mainstream films going to Cuban actress Ana de Armas in Knives Out and Colombian actress Natalia Reyes Gaitan in Terminator: Dark Fate.

One of the most potent signs of youth taking over is Billie Eilish, the 17-year-old subversive who has jolted pop music with her debut electro-pulse album, When

We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? The work makes Eilish, who at times looks like an end-of-days denizen, the youngest artist to be simultaneously nominated in the major Grammy categories of song, record, album and best new artist.

Of course, each generation thinks it discovered what has already been charted by the one preceding it. Bugs Bunny is as sly as anything on South Park.

Socially conscious Gen Zers may be marching against gun violence and climate change, but boomers and their elders born before 1946, including Bob Dylan and Martin Luther King Jr., protested for civil rights and against the Vietnam War. A fine line runs between self-righteousness and forgetting. Or worse, not being aware of what those younger and older than us have been through.

"The idea that youth culture is culture created

by youth is a myth. Youth culture is manufactured by people who are no longer young," Louis Menand recently wrote in the New Yorker. "When you are actually a young person, you can only consume what's out there. It often becomes 'your culture,' but not because you made it. If you were born during the baby boom, you can call yourself a '60s person. You can even be a '60s person. Just don't pretend that any of it was your idea."

Still, each generation has its own style and aesthetic to make sense of its world, or, in the case of the rise of virtual reality, other worlds tempting us in cyberspace. As decades go by, what Gen Z innovations will be praised and admonished long after baby boomers with their trippy playlists and fading idealism have passed into history?

THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

First reactions are split

It seemed like an entire galaxy attended the world premiere of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in Los Angeles, and the lucky first wave of viewers had several thoughts.

Initial reactions were, unsurprisingly, mixed, as is standard for just about any installment in a franchise so beloved.

But some are so diametrically opposed, it's almost hard to believe everyone saw the same film. Most, however, were able to agree on one thing about the highly anticipated finale to the Skywalker saga: It's a lot to take in.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is the third film in the trilogy starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac, who play a fresh class of resistance fighters in the ongoing struggle to defeat the corrupt First Order (led by 80

Adam Driver's Kylo Ren) and bring peace to the galaxy.

Among the sequel's champions were When They See Us mastermind Ava DuVernay, who called it "Truly emotional," "jawdropping" and "the perfect end to an epic saga," with special kudos to lead actress Ridley.

"To balance scope and scale with so much heart like that is a feat," the producer wrote. "The performances are so damn good. Especially, Daisy.

A fantastic ride."

Charlie's Angels director Elizabeth Banks also appeared impressed, praising and teasing one undisclosed moment in particular.

"I cried," she tweeted. "And The Rise of Skywalker has the best no-sex love scene I've seen in a long while."

Others were less satisfied, with many lamenting how the narrative distances itself from its predecessor, The Last Jedi. The 2017 Rian Johnson film is one of the most polarizing entries in the Star Wars universe, with supporters _ including

The Times' critic Justin Chang _ lauding Johnson's decision to veer from the tried-and-true, good-versusevil formula as refreshing, while purists found his embellishments insulting.

The lead-up to Rise of Skywalker had many wondering whether Abrams would run with the unconventional and controversial themes Johnson introduced. Apparently not.

"RISE OF SKYWALKER could only have been ruder to Rian Johnson if they had motion-smoothed it," wrote the New York Times' Kyle Buchanan.

"The emotional highs are spectacular, and there are a lot of payoffs (some earned, some not)," tweeted IGN's Laura Prudom, before adding, "But some choices feel like an unnecessary course-correct from The Last Jedi and some just plain don't make sense."

The common thread among early Rise of Skywalker viewers? Overstimulation. For better or worse, the movie promises plenty of action and adventure, with journalists on Twitter calling it "9 movies of plot in one," "stuffed with so much everything" and "a lot."

THE CLASS WAR COMES TO THE GOLDEN GLOBES

So far, the rich are winning

Succession. Big Little Lies. The Crown.

The Morning Show. Class warfare is alive and wealthy among the Golden Globe nominees for top television drama, which were revealed along with the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.'s other film and TV choices ahead of January's award ceremony.

As for the nominated comedies? The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Fleabag, The Politician and The Kominsky Method acknowledge the wealth gap ... but from the perspective of rich white folks as they gaze out of penthouse windows, argue over lavish dinners and grow old on L.A.'s Westside.

This love affair with the 1% is enough to make the Joker cackle uncontrollably, especially as America's middle and working classes are circling the drain.

And it's enough to make one pine for the cramped kitchen and tattered sofa of Roseanne.

In a year when television offered so many fresh narratives, many of which tackled issues of class and race including When They See Us and Watchmen it's disappointing yet predictable that voters stuck with the equivalent of Dallas, Dynasty and Falcon's Crest.

They chose aspiration as their guide, social disparity be damned.

Not to belittle the excellent drama of Season 3 of The Crown or AppleTV+'s entertaining new offering The Morning Show. Each production spins an absorbing narrative around women who are left cleaning up the messes of the men who came before them. And, news flash, they have to work

twice as hard to maintain power. The nominated comedy Fleabag thrives in its own wonderful mess, no clean-up required, thanks to the singular vision of its creator and star, Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

But if one were to touch down on this planet for the first time and use the Golden Globes' list of TV contenders as America's cultural barometer, they'd assume that the only stories worth telling or worthy of winning an award were those of the well-heeled.

Ramy Youssef carries the burden of representing the only immigrant story of the bunch thanks to his surprise nomination for comedy actor in Hulu's Ramy. It's TV's first Muslim-American comedy, and though it's fearless and deeply funny.

There's a whopping two yes, two! actors who play working-class heroes in the drama series actor category, and they're played by actors of color, no less (also in shortage across all the Golden Globe TV categories). Rami Malek's anticorporate hacker Elliot, of Mr. Robot, and Billy Porter's ballroom diva Pray Tell, of Pose, are up against a prince and an heir to the throne (Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip of The Crown and Kit Harrington as Jon Snow on Game of Thrones).

The filthy rich publishing tycoon of Succession, Logan Roy (played by the now-nominated Brian Cox), gets a paragraph of his own. You would have thought by now that folks would have soured on tales involving loaded, undeserving families who fail upward into seats of power. But no, this drama features enough designer loft/private helicopter/ house in the Hamptons porn to keep viewers and the HFPA enamored until we're all outsourced into

poverty. Twitter loves this show. If only Succession were half as interesting as the social media buzz it generates.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is another awardwinning mystery. She's marvelous mostly because she's rich and because actress Rachel Brosnahan is undeniably charming. But the "risk" of doing stand-up comedy in mid-century America isn't really a risk at all when a girl can rely on her prosperous parents' fortune.

The voting body really stretched on this multiple Golden Globe/Emmy winner.

There are, of course, exceptions: In The Morning Show, supporting actress nominee Reese Witherspoon plays scrappy, Middle American reporter Bradley Jackson. Kirsten Dunst of On Becoming a God in Central Florida and Natasha Lyonne of Russian Doll portray characters who live paycheck to paycheck when they have jobs. The Act, set in small-town Missouri, and Barry, following the travails of military veterans and struggling actors, aren't exactly tony either.

Showtime's satisfying take-down of late Fox News founder Roger Ailes in The Loudest Voice was nominated for limited series consideration. It's one production that doesn't drool over its affluent subject.

Instead, it chronicles how he manipulated Americans into voting against their own interests. It's running against the best TV production of the year, Chernobyl.

No one but cronies were rich in Soviet-era Russia, so the prospects for turning this historical drama into a radioactive Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous were slim.

Who will win television's class war when the envelopes are opened at the 77th Golden Globe Awards in 2020? We'll see when it's aired from a ballroom, in Beverly Hills.

Here are the 20 actors who could be earning Oscar nominations this year

Screen Actors Guild Awards voters have spoken. The Golden Globes nominations are out. Superior slates from the Los Angeles and New York film critics groups are available for those wanting to dig a bit deeper. What does this all mean for this year's acting Oscar races? Let's take a look at the thinned-out fields and see who's up, who's down and who Oscar voters can redeem with acts of kindness (and good taste).

LEAD ACTOR Joaquin Phoenix, Joker Adam Driver, Marriage Story Leonardo DiCaprio, Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood Antonio Banderas, Pain and Glory Christian Bale, Ford v Ferrari On the cusp: Robert De Niro, The Irishman; Jonathan Pryce, The Two Popes; Taron Egerton, Rocketman; Eddie Murphy, Dolemite Is My Name I've written reams about this brutally competitive category, and predicting the final five isn't any easier now than it was three months ago. Phoenix and Driver have been locks all along, and DiCaprio picking up nods from the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. and SAG voters puts him on solid ground for his emotionally layered turn in Once Upon a Time.

Banderas has never earned an Oscar nomination.

He won lead actor honors from both the Los Angeles and New York film critics groups and picked up a Golden Globe nomination to boot. He anchors Pedro Almodovar's achingly beautiful Pain and Glory with a career-best turn. The film has been widely seen since premiering at Cannes, where Banderas won the best actor prize. Quality will win out. In fact, I think Banderas could well go on to win the Oscar.

The last remaining spot could go to De Niro for his subtle lead turn in The Irishman, though his shut-out from SAG and Globes voters is worrisome. You can't appreciate the power of De Niro's performance if you don't watch the movie straight through. And, with The Irishman clocking in at three hours, that's going to be an issue with lots of voters.

Pryce is excellent, and his chemistry with co-star Anthony Hopkins is the primary draw for The Two Popes.

Murphy, like just about every comic actor, has never been given his Oscar due. One of them could make it in. But I'll go with Bale, a four-time nominee, who picked up SAG and Globes nominations for delivering yet another dynamic, entertaining turn in Ford v Ferrari.

LEAD ACTRESS Renee Zellweger, Judy Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story Charlize Theron, Bombshell 86

Cynthia Erivo, Harriet Saoirse Ronan, Little Women On the cusp: Lupita Nyong'o, Us; Awkwafina, The Farewell; Alfre Woodard, Clemency Zellweger has been the front-runner for her empathetic portrayal of Judy Garland since September, and there has been no reason to change that perception. Her personal comeback story combined with the strong work will be tough to beat.

Theron, Johansson and Erivo all earned noms from SAG and the HFPA and figure to join Zellweger.

If I'm putting this much credence in the precursors, I should be concerned about Little Women, which did not do particularly well with the Globes and SAG Awards. But it's a smart and moving adaptation, and I think any commercial success through the holidays will compel academy members to give it a look. The biggest hindrance to its awards season success thus far hasn't been its quality. It's men who can't be bothered to watch a movie titled Little Women. C'mon, Oscar voters.

You're better than that.

SUPPORTING ACTOR Joe Pesci, The Irishman Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood Al Pacino, The Irishman Tom Hanks, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Song Kang Ho, Parasite On the cusp: Jamie Foxx, Just Mercy; Anthony Hopkins, The Two Popes; Willem Dafoe, The Lighthouse; Tracy Letts, Ford v Ferrari; Sterling K. Brown, Waves There's plenty of room on the Parasite best picture bandwagon, but space will be a bit more cramped after Song scores a nomination for his brilliant turn playing the patriarch in Parasite. Song is a superstar in South Korea, and though some voters will be seeing him for the first time in Parasite, that shouldn't be an obstacle for a performance that, like

the film, hits its audience right in the heart.

If you think this pick is a stretch, consider: Parasite landed a SAG ensemble nod. The L.A. Film Critics gave Song its supporting actor prize, helping put him on the map. And last season, the academy's acting branch nominated Roma actresses Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira. You don't think they'll want to have their #BongHive membership cards stamped with at least one nod?

SUPPORTING ACTRESS Jennifer Lopez, Hustlers Laura Dern, Marriage Story Margot Robbie, Bombshell Scarlett Johansson, Jojo Rabbit Zhao Shuzhen, The Farewell On the cusp: Kathy Bates, Richard Jewell; Annette Bening, The Report; Florence Pugh, Little Women; Nicole Kidman, Bombshell; Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Dolemite Is My Name My dream lineup: Dern, J-Lo, Zhao, Pugh and Randolph.

Right now from that group, only Dern and Lopez are certain. Along with Robbie (who was much better in Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood), they earned love from SAG and the Globes. Zhao didn't rate with either group, but Oscar voters can fix that. Just remember: "She's Nai Nai, " the heart of Lulu Wang's delicate story of familial love.

I'm choking up, just typing this sentence.

Of course, Jojo Rabbit cultists have the same response to Johansson's performance as the loving mother in Taika Waititi's scattered, tone-shifting satire.

Between this and her lead turn in Marriage Story, Johansson could become the first actor in 12 years to earn two Oscar nominations in the same year. (It has happened 11 times, with Cate Blanchett being the most recent double nominee for Elizabeth: The Golden Age and I'm Not There.) URBAN LEGEND OR NOT?

One Spring Morning in Salmiya

There is the well-known story that, over the years, has morphed into something like a legend, even myth, about the man who--married or not, we will never know-one Tuesday morning in April was walking down Salem Mubarak street thinking of nothing in particular, minding his own earlymorning business, when he happened to spot two women with hijabs sitting outside a coffee shop, drinking their coffees, smoking cigarettes and laughing about last night’s Turkish soap opera that was cleverly silly, in a romantic way.

The story goes on that the man--whose name we will never know or even care to know—first heard the women, their big laughter filling the morning, and then second, saw them, and without the slightest hesitation, as if all along it had been a part of his early-morning mission, walked up to the louder, the smokier of the two, and with thumb-and-forefinger precision yanked the cigarette from her mouth and tossed it into the street where almost immediately a bread truck crushed it. The man never broke stride, never looked back, never said a word. The woman, 88

once the initial shock wore off, by now had half-risen from her coffee shop chair and in her best Turkish soap opera voice, yelled, “Hey.” Of course, she said more, so the story goes, louder, harsher, a terribleArabic name-calling, as did her friend who stood to join her, as wisps of hijab-free hair swirled about their faces. However, by now the man had crossed the street and was busy looking up into the trees that were full of springtime bloom.

The story goes on to say that after the namecalling did nothing to stop him, not to mention flinging a cigarette lighter his direction, not even a glance back, that the two women called the police, and before long a police car with flashing lights pulled up in front of the coffee shop, and the two women told all. The police officer took notes and nodded and asked a question or two. When it came to the part about, “What did he look like? His appearance?” the woman who had had her cigarette abused repeated, “What did he look like?” while busily tucking strands of loose hair under her hijab.

The police officer waited, ready to take more notes, his police car at the kerb, engine running, red and blue lights flashing. This is when she looked at her friend, and after a short wait, followed by some headto-head murmurings, they shrugged, saying, “A man, not too tall with dishdasha, yes, he was wearing a

dishdasha, and oh, by the way, yes, yes, his hair was dark, very dark.” All the while the police officer nodded, his pen and notebook at the ready.

As abuses go, this plucking a cigarette from a woman’s lips, in the grand scheme of things, is nothing. And yet—the myth goes on to say--later that day there were more rumors and reports of cigarettes being pulled from women’s mouths, the culprit being a not too tall man with dishdasha who silently went about this business, strolling through a bright April morning.

More police were alerted, more police cars with lights flashing, screeching to a halt in front of assorted coffee shops. But he was never captured and to this day, as they might say on TV police dramas, remains at large.

In certain traditional circles that April, Tuesday has become one of celebration, a day of remembrance; and, if truth be told, the no-named stranger has, over the years, gained a heroic stature—the stuff of gold-plated plaques and diwaniya speeches because he dared to take things into his own hands, to right the many wrongs infecting the Salmiya district, not to mention the country, and beyond, so say certain traditional circles.

MOMO ZAA Bhutanese soul food with an authentic experience By bazaar staff

If you have ever tried traditional Bhutanese cuisine, you will know that it is made up of simple yet comforting ingredients - chili, rice, meat, and dairy.

The inclusion of many fresh and nutritious vegetables makes it perfect for vegetarians and vegans. Momo Zaa, Kuwait’s first and only Bhutanese restaurant was our introduction to the cuisine.

As soon as you step into Momo Zaa, the cozy interior and classic aesthetic of Bhutanese colors help you realize you are about to try something completely new. Colorful traditional flags hang proudly on the inside symbolizing good luck and prosperity. The good vibes and warmth surround you instantly. Momo Zaa itself means “to eat dumplings” where "momo" is the term for a dumpling and "zaa" means to eat . Momos (plural) is a term commonly used in Bhutan, Nepal and parts of India. Since they are served hot, eating momos is the perfect way to warm up during those biting cold months.

The restaurant is serviced out of a small eatery in Salmiya but the food is not small, to say the least. It screams flavor and lusciousness. Inside, there is a window to the kitchen for customers to watch the cooking process while the best sellers are written on a large chalk board.

For starters, we were served Vegetable Sausages, which are made of soybeans and are perfectly garnished with scallions and cilantro. The seasoning was spot on, it was hard to believe this 90

dish was 100% vegetarian. Next, we received our main course with three different kinds of momos.

Accompanying the momos was a (broth-like) soup served in small round bowls.

Momos’ fillings can range from chicken, cheese, beef, vegetable and vegan. Our order was simple and met everybody’s needs: chicken, vegetable and vegan momos. They arrived piping hot and steamed to perfection, although they can be ordered fried depending on your preference.

The Chef and managing partner, Mr. Kencho Tashi came over and introduced us to the Bhutanese black pepper placed in the grinder set on the table.

This black pepper was Sichuan pepper and oddly enough had a citrusy aroma; we were told that it is related to citrus fruits rather than black peppercorns.

Sichuan pepper has many health benefits including reducing inflammation and improving immunity, so we were not surprised that it is a Bhutanese staple.

Next, we were served the Wai Wai Chow, a mixture of vegetables and noodles. The consistency of the noodles was far from anything we had ever tried locally. They were not as thick and are much easier on the stomach. To complement, it the Bhutanese chili sauce was placed on the table for our liking. Side note: it is very spicy so if you’re not a fan, let the Chef know ahead of time.

The other main course for rice lovers is called Shamdrey, a traditional Bhutanese fried rice.

Alongside the rice we tried the Jasha Maru, which is diced chicken tossed with vegetables and seasoning. To make matters even better, we were graced with the Kewa Datsi, which is a plate of potato, melted cheese and chili. This mouthwatering plate was the star of our lunch and we all agreed that it is a must try!

As our bellies were becoming too full to comfortably relax in our seats, the incredible Chef Kencho came over with a bowl of treats. In the bowl were several dark chocolate momos. The momos were exquisite with chocolate oozing out as soon as you take a bite. Those momos were divine with a capital D. They’re also available in a decadent white chocolate.

Those looking to learn more about Bhutan should definitely chat with Chef Kencho. In his conversations about his homeland, he creates a beautiful portrait of what is considered to be one the happiest places in the world. After eating at Momo Zaa, we understand why!

Overall, the trip to Momo Zaa was delightful.

The food was fresh and although a quick bite, the satisfaction lasted a long while. If you are still curious about Bhutanese cuisine, visit Momo Zaa and you’ll find out that their food is not only good for your tummy but also for your soul. The debut studio album by British rapper Stormzy was released back in 2017, and we were instantly swept up in the storm. It became the first grime album in history to reach number one in the UK Albums Chart. At the 2018 Brit Awards, Gang Signs & Prayers won British Album of the Year. Hits from the album such as “Cigarettes & Cush” featuring guest appearances by Kehlani and Lily Allen is just one hit that we cannot stop replaying.

The sixth studio album by American alternative singer and songwriter was released in 2012.

This album features Regina’s beautiful talent in piano-driven songs of heartbreak, but with unexpected comic turns of phrases. Plus, beatboxing outbursts! She balances the songs with interesting instruments in those specific tracks, “Oh Marcello”, “All the Rowboats”, and “Ballad of a Politician”. Just like her various albums, Each song plays with a likeable twist.

Another unforgettable 2017 release was Harry’s debut studio album. After the dramatic separation from One Direction, the release of the lead single “Sign of the Times” was a hit that immediately shaped Harry Styles solo career. The band is best known as Anderson. Paak’s backing band that consists of guitarist Jose Rios, keyboardist Ron Tnava Avant, bassist Kelsey Gonzales and drummer Callum Conor have finally released their debut album. Free Nationals features multiple guest appearances, but one track that stands out is the one with artist Shafiq Husayn who also just released a collaborative album with Sons of Yusuf. Both albums are completely different, but worth a listen on Spotify!

The Canadian producer’s album Bubba is a collaborative spirit with high refined sounds. The word motion would perfectly suit this fun, confident, and rhythmic album. The simple details in most tracks, including “Midsection”, “Taste”, and “Go DJ” demonstrates how pacing, consistency, and the drive to listen to each song with care proves that the producer is not kidding around. Rather, he is fully showcasing his talents when it comes to sound and featured artists.

What Deliveroo’s data says about our 2019 eating habits and what’s to come in 2020 By bazaar staff

We ordered a lot of food in 2019 (we are looking at you Taco Tuesday and Fatayer Thursday) and we are sure that bazaar is far from unique in our eating habits. And now we have the data from Deliveroo that can shed some insight on what everyone else has been ordering all year and what the trends might look like in 2020.

We consider ourselves lucky to be living in Kuwait, as it is a cultural epicenter of food concepts.

The top ten most-ordered dishes from Deliveroo in Kuwait were quite varied and interesting. Starting from the bottom, number 10 was Classic Katsu Curry from Holy Katsu, a two-topping pizza from

Blaze was number 9. The next two spots were the Original Chicken from Rock House Sliders and the Raising Cane’s’ Box combo. We obviously have a lot of Greek fans because sixth on the list was the Beef Gryo from Gyros. Burgers were also a fan-favorite, with the Shack Burger and Five Guys’ Cheeseburger coming in next. Finally, our collective sweet tooth showed up at fourth place with the Rewild Cookie Dough Vanilla Ice Cream from local concept Oh G!.

The second most ordered dish is one of our favorite soul-comforting dishes; Chicken Katsu from Meme’s Curry. The combination of white rice, fried chicken and spicy curry sauce warms our existence and transforms us from hangry gremlins to happy campers.

The winner however was yet another burger, the Old School from Griddle was the most ordered item on Deliveroo this year. The list shows that we love

burgers, chicken, pizza and Japanese and then we like to end it with ice cream.

However, there have been strong and visible changes in ordering habits that indicate that 2020 might end up with a completely different top ten.

The food experts and data scientists at Deliveroo have been using trends, insights and data to predict what’s going to take off in the restaurant world in 2020. The global delivery giant not only has access to information from the Kuwait market but they can also work their magic on worldwide numbers for a clearer understanding of where we are all headed.

It seems that we are all trying to Go Green in more ways than one. Deliveroo data shows that a large group of customers are more frequently optingin for a part-time vegan diet, with around half of their food consumption being meat and the other half, plant-based.

It might help that salads are getting bigger and better. Data at Deliveroo suggests that customers are becoming more serious about salads. With the greatest respect shared for the cobbs, greens and sides that grace our daily menus, 2020 is expected to popularize a new wave of creative salads that are more than leaves.

UK based chef, Jess Tathem, predicts that there will be new ingredients making their way into our bowls, making them healthier, more interesting and tastier. Ferments - such as lacto fermented sauces and miso will be added for a depth of flavor. While unusual grains such as teff and freekeh might be replacing the now-ubiquitous quinoa. Move over almond and hazelnut butter because unusual nut butters in dressings and dips, like sunflower seed will be replacing you. You might also be consuming more seaweed and not just in your sushi, underused produce like swede - which tastes amazing shaved raw, and sea weeds such as dulse are going to be the next big thing. Finally, dehydrated vegetables will be a great addition to any salad because they add texture to the mix.

Some of us might also be trying to go back in time to one of the oldest and most primitive methods of cooking. The ‘char’ flavor has been trending for the past few months, with its smokiness and woody depth heightening the natural taste of the ingredients it coats.

Perhaps not so ironically, Street Food is going to be a strong contender in 2020. Classics that have always been quick and easy to grab and eat while out and about are arriving more often at our doorsteps.

The most popular street food cuisines are Indian, Thai and Greek. In November 2018, Saturday was the day of street food when it came to food delivery, but now Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes are also peaking.

Most of us have a sweet spot for mom’s spaghetti and meatballs, but consumers are now demanding restaurant-cooked pasta, both dining in and through food delivery. Searches for fresh pasta on Deliveroo have increased by 68% in the past three months, and the company sees that number steadily rising throughout 2020.

Finally, theatrical elements have been steadily on the rise over the past few years, in an attempt to add that memorable WOW factor to every bite.

From unusual ingredients to digital experiences, consumers can expect to see some more theater with their delivered dishes in 2020. It makes total sense, no one can resist an Instagram-worthy dish.

AUK PARTNERS WITH NUQAT FOR 2019 REGIONAL CONFERENCE The American University of Kuwait (AUK) is a knowledge partner for the 2019 Regional Conference hosted

by Nuqat. The 10-day conference centers on the theme ‘State of the Elastic Mind: A New Mindset for Old Barriers’ that aims to engage its attendees to find the means to understand, critique, and reframe mindsets that have shaped prevalent social structures in the Arab world in order to overcome obstacles. AUK hosted the Nuqat team for a one-day roadshow for the students where they presented more information about the renowned international speakers expected to come to the conference, the topics that will be discussed, and available workshops, as well as ways in which AUK students can volunteer in the conference. The roadshow and exclusive session were a great success with many students registering and volunteering for one of the most collaborative and active cultural conferences in Kuwait.

This occurred during a ceremony held in cooperation with Regents University that honored a diverse group of Arab women in different fields in the Langham Hotel in the presence of the Dean of the UK Diplomatic Corps Kuwait Ambassador to the United Kingdom His Excellency Khalid Al-Duwaisan and a representative of the Mayor of London. The ceremony also witnessed the honoring of Kuwaiti Minister Maryam Al-Aqeel for her work with government agencies, and Jordanian journalist Rana Al-Husseini for her role in highlighting the issue of honor crimes, which she wrote about "Murder in the Name of Honor" in 2009.
