I can’t believe 2011 is finally over! What a year. What an absolutely stressful year, to say the least. So much change all around the region, with a lot more yet to come. So much needless death and violence as we usher out the old and hesitantly welcome the new. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions all around and it has certainly been a polarizing experience, what with people no longer talking to one another, or as is fit in this new social media enhanced landscape we live in, ‘unfriending’ each other on facebook or not following them anymore on twitter! Sure, I know that the difference between 2011 and 2012 is just a day and a number, and that between one day and the next nothing is going to change significantly, but we’re human, and as humans we tend to measure events in years. You have good years, you have bad years, you have insignificant years, and you have monumental years that go down in history. I think 2011 is one of those years that we will all remember for the rest of our lives.

Business Development

I think what struck me most about this year was the plunge into politics of the average Joe. Everyone I meet, from the guy who washes my car, to the cashier in the supermarket, to friends and relatives, to even the tea boy at work has their own insight as to what’s going on, what’s going to happen and of course, the billion conspiracy theories that abound. Combine that with the talk shows, the demonstrations, the marches, the tear gas that Arabs have seemingly become immune to, and all the rest of it, and its information overload galore!

Editor

I must admit it has all made me appreciate my job at bazaar a lot more than I used to. To be able to come to the office, get away from the news on TV, write about new restaurants, cool new brands, interesting artsy people, play with colors, designs, textures, and layouts, and simply immerse myself in the total opposite of what’s going on in the ‘real world’ has become a welcome treat. The last two months, especially, flew by as we raced against time to complete our annual dining guide which we like to think of as the one and only guide in Kuwait that properly covers the restaurant scene. We tried our best to include every new restaurant possible, but even as we were closing the guide and going to print, there were new restaurants literally opening their doors like Upper Crust Pizzeria, which has swiftly turned into one of our favorite hang-outs in Kuwait. Don’t worry, if your favorite restaurant isn’t in the dining guide, we will surely cover it in 2012. All you have to do is drop us an email mentioning why you love it so much and we’ll take care of the rest. If you would like extra copies of the dining guide to distribute to friends and colleagues at work, the same applies. Send us an email stating how many copies you need, and we’ll do our best to send them over as fast as possible.

When documenting the formative Art movement in Kuwait, it is evident that the Establishment of the Free Atelier in 1959 marks a milestone of this movement, creating the infrastructure of the current Kuwait formative Art. Sprouting from the Annual “Spring – Exhibitions” held between 1968 and 1995, then branching to the inauguration of the Kuwait Society of Formative Art in 1967, and later holding Exhibitions by the National Council for Culture, Art & Literature since 1973. The steady progress of accomplishments of these Art Activities contributed in building the youth and supporting young talents in a healthy and fertile environment. This era witnessed the birth of the leaders of the Kuwaiti Formative Artists of all fields of art, sculpture, photography, pottery …. Artist: Fatima Al-Qadiri & Khalid al Gharaballi Date: January 25 - February 9 Exhibition Title: Mendeel Um A7mad (N x I x S x M)

Mendeel Um A7mad (N x I x S x M) is a multimedia installation by New York-based artists Fatima Al Qadiri and Khalid al Gharaballi, to be exhibited at Contemporary Art Platform (CAP) in Kuwait from January 25 to February 9, 2012. The Arab Fund for Art and Culture (AFAC) grant-winning project presents the tissue box as an unlikely Kuwaiti national icon. The two-part installation consists of a film projected inside a monumental tissue box–created in collaboration with Kuwait-based designers Aziz Alqatami and Nanu Al-Hamad. In this project the artists investigate the notion of “gendered space,” by uncovering the role, context, design and discourse present in the Kuwaiti ritual/ space of Chai Dhaha. Chai Dhaha is the ritual of prenoon tea amongst middle-aged Kuwaiti women–an informal female forum that exists parallel to the Diwaniya (the male forum). The artists interpret Chai Dhaha through creating a film, shot in Kuwait at a hotel ballroom and featuring four middle-aged female characters played by a cast of younger men. Al Qadiri and al Gharaballi pay homage to the legacy of Abdul-Aziz Al Nimish, the legendary actor who for decades performed the roles of mature women when it was viewed as unseemly for women of that age group to perform in public. The film is set out-of-context in a hotel ballroom, as opposed to a residential living room, to illustrate the absurd spatial conditions of post-oil boom Kuwaiti interior aesthetics–where designing to human scale took a backseat to supersized ostentation.

CAP Kuwait is a nonprofit venture, supported by an extensive private collection of modern and contemporary artwork. The Contemporary Art Platform is located in Industrial Shuwaikh Block 2, St. 28, Life Center, top floor (Across from the Shuwaikh Immigration Dept). ELISA FRANCESCHINIS Getting involved, one country at a time By bazaar staff

Since a very young age, Elisa Franceschinis empathized with the world’s injustices, aware of her privileged upbringing, as her parents traveled the world while working with the Italian Embassy. From Islamabad, Canada, to London, Elisa became interested in human rights and social justice issues early in her life, volunteering for several grassroots and activist organizations while attending university in Canada. She states, “One of the organizations I spent the longest time with was the Pivot Legal Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the legal rights of the most marginalized, such as the homeless, 22

drug addicts, sex workers, and illegal immigrants in Vancouver.” After spending her time traveling and pursuing her passion of ‘getting involved’ with various organizations in Spain, India, and London, Elisa and her husband decided to move to Kuwait. Worried that she would not be able to find work that would be relative to her field, Elisa was lucky enough to come across en.v, the Kuwaitbased organization dedicated to promoting social responsibility and environmental sustainability in the Arab world. As project coordinator, Elisa spends her time implementing very exciting programs such as Arij (also featured in our January issue) and Voice

for Success. A program funded by the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), Voice for Success aims to strengthen Kuwaiti civil society, scouting Kuwait for the most committed and talented social activists working in a variety of fields such as human rights, environmental awareness, health and education, and documenting their initiatives through a series of short films, photographic reports and articles to be published via en.v’s online news portals. On these programs, she states, “I believe that the ‘Voice for Success’ fulfills three objectives fundamental to the development of Kuwaiti civil society. First of all, raising visibility for existing

initiatives, which is vital. I’ve found that although there are many enterprising and talented young people committed to making Kuwait a better place, not much is known about their initiatives amongst the general population, and therefore they do not have the impact that they should. Secondly, we want to create a platform to promote greater cooperation and knowledge-sharing amongst active civil society organizations, in order to increase efficiency and growth of the not-for-profit sector. Third, we hope to inspire others, particularly young people, to get involved themselves, either by joining existing groups, or by creating their own initiatives, learning from others’ experiences.”

bazaar questionnaire: What is your idea of perfect happiness? Having a family, and friends that make you laugh, and a

job that you are committed to and passionate about. What is your greatest fear? Wasting time. Waking up one day and realizing that I don’t have enough time to do all the things I had dreamed of doing. What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? I would have to say pride. I am not very good at taking criticism, for example. And I don’t like doing things I don’t think I will be good at. What is the trait you most deplore in others? Intolerance and close-mindedness. Which living person do you most admire? I know this is going to sound cheesy, but I can’t narrow it down to one person. There are so many courageous, committed people around the world that are willing to make unconceivable sacrifices in order to make the world a better place for others. What is your greatest extravagance? Honestly, I don’t think I have one. I hate shopping for clothes, and I am not into fancy electronics, cars, or anything like that.

I would much rather spend my money on travelling and food. Which words or phrases do you most overuse? “I think…” I love giving my opinion on stuff. When were you happiest? I can’t narrow it down to one moment. I guess it’s any time I am travelling, discovering a new place, or laughing with people I love. Which talent would you most like to have? I am pretty happy with what I have been given, but I guess I would have liked to be able to draw a bit better (all my drawings look like a five year old just did them…) What would you consider your greatest achievement? I guess always having been able to fulfill my ambition of making a living, while making a positive (I hope) impact on society. Where would you most like to live? I think if I had to choose just one place, I would probably pick Madrid, because it’s a cosmopolitan city with a lot to offer, both socially and culturally, and yet it has a very laid-back atmosphere, lovely weather and great people. However, I would need to move some place new every few years or else I would get bored…

LIVE TO RIDE The Kuwait Bike Show 2012 By bazaar staff

Kickstarting the New Year in full gear, January is always that one month of the year that is jampacked with exciting events. The weather is perfectly pleasant for outdoor cafes and leisurely walks, and Kuwait’s ambience is transformed with excitement with the anticipated celebratory month of February. A SLICE OF BOSTON’S FINEST The Upper Crust Pizzeria By bazaar staff

When one thinks of the typical Boston slice, the mind wanders to none other than Boston’s Upper Crust Pizzeria. Creating that addictive taste, a little heavy on the secret red sauce and a well-made thinner crust, the Upper Crust Pizzeria has been serving their award-winning pizzas 26

to Boston residents since 2001. Using a simple flavorful crust, the Upper Crust Pizzeria prides itself in inventing new ways to tease the taste buds. In terms of thickness, choice of toppings or sauces, preferences may differ here in Kuwait, yet as a market conditioned to taste only the most

sophisticated flavors, the opening of this pizzeria is happily received. One who is schooled in the art of food by Kuwait’s myriad of gastronomic delights, and is granted bonafide foodie status by experience, can’t argue with the way pizza is supposed to be, and should there be an argument, we can daringly rebut that one bite of the Upper Crust slice will convince you otherwise. Taking a break from the usual thicker pizza pie, the pie artisans at the Upper Crust Pizzeria have expertly perfected the art of the thinner crust, crisped on the outside edges and soft towards the center, this crust is craftily balanced to carry the promiscuously delicious chosen toppings. Incorporating only the freshest ingredients, the menu has grown from classical favorites to include more daring toppings. Located at the glitzy new restaurant complex that is The Village in Abu Al Hasaniya, the award-winning interior design alone is worth the visit. Pizza-tin decorated high ceilings emit a designer loft-like appeal, sleek white tables and floor to ceiling windows, Flat-screen TVs to watch your favorite game, and the open kitchen plans make for an entertaining dining experience. The outdoor seating area is equally pleasant; with stylish, flaring gas heaters to keep you warm in the chillier winter months, we decided to sit outside to enjoy the pleasant weather. Although we’ve fallen in love with the dailyprepared dough, flavorful tomato sauces, and that special blend of Mozzarella that has been perfected for over twenty years, the starters at the Upper Crust Pizzeria are equally delicious. With mouth-watering Buffalo wings, or the Antipasto platter, even the light White Spinach pizza makes for an ideal appetizer. Choosing a selection of salads, we opted for the Caesar and strawberry and feta salads, along with the Antipasto platter. With a selection of grilled vegetables, green and red peppers, eggplants, mushrooms, artichokes, peppered salami and an Italian cheese assortment atop crunchy Rocca leaves, this platter is more than ideal for sharing, the delicious cheeses leave a tempting hint for what’s to come. Lasagna for starters, why not? Having the option to choose our fillings of chicken, beef, or vegetable, we chose the beefy lasagna to nibble on until the main event of our meal, the award-winning pizzas, arrived. As we continuously dove with our forks into the piping hot dish, we notice the recurrent tantalizing tastes of the cheeses and spiced beef. Refined flavors and quality ingredients are apparent throughout every dish. Glancing around, we also were surprised to see that the Calzones are also popular choices. Prepared with mozzarella, ricotta, and asiago cheese, these are hand-rolled in the signature Upper Crust Pizza dough and baked to perfection.

Speaking of that delicious dough, we should give our readers a heads up; when ordering your pizza, the small size makes for a whopping 14-inch pie, and the larger size is 18 inches. One might think that these sizes are indestructible, yet because of the signature thinner crust, slightly crisped on the edges after a generous dash of olive oil completes the pie; the pizza is much lighter than most renditions seen in K-town. You can also order your regular or large pizza in halves, yet we were too greedy (and hungry) to think otherwise. We started off with the Swellesley, Upper Crust’s ‘Arabiatta’ rendition, with Parmigiano Reggiano, red sauce, pepperoni, crushed red pepper, garlic, olive oil and basil. Perfectly balancing out the edgy spiced pepperoni, we dove right into the Spinach Leaf pizza, with its famous red sauce topped with fresh spinach, ricotta, and fresh garlic. The ricotta cheese expertly

spread across the surface created a heavenly balance of textures while complimenting the spinach. That deliciously crusted dough is a winner in our books; we could truly consume it on its own! Renowned for their daring toppings, we opted to experiment with new flavors, including Bubs’ BBQ chicken, the traditional white pizza with BBQ breaded chicken (you can also order the chicken grilled), sliced onion and mozzarella. The contrasting flavors are divine, as the flavors of the white cheese are completely brought out with the tanginess of the BBQ sauce, and with the chunks of breaded chicken, we were absolutely sold. For spicy, buffalo chicken lovers, we also recommend Brendan’s Buffalo chicken pizza, with blue cheese and mozzarella. We also sampled the Patata Rossa, which could easily be ordered as an appetizer, another light, white pizza creation

with rosemary and garlic-roasted red bliss potatoes, caramelized onions, Fontina and mozzarella cheeses. After slice upon slice of the heavenly pizza pies, we were pleasantly surprised when we realized we did have room for dessert. Ordering the house specialty that is the Nutella Calzone with bananas and strawberries is a must when paying the Upper Crust Pizzeria a fanciful visit. The homemade Gelatos are perfectly light yet flavorful, and we guarantee that the Strawberry and Mascarpone Gelato is a delight worth saving room for. If the Nutella Calzone didn’t hit the spot for you, have it in the Gelato form, and mix it up with the Strawberry Mascarpone gelato for that addictive marriage between fruit and chocolate. The Upper Crust Pizzeria is located in The Village restaurant complex in Abu Al Hasaneya. HOUSE OF BUTTERFLIES: In the Loving Memory of Heba Aljuhail By Shabana H. Shaikh

“The summer of 2010 was a time when I had to “detox” some aspects of my life that wore me down for two years. During those two years, I had my first child; started a career in academia; but, none of that can be compared to being a soldier of a very important case: I had watched my youngest sister fight viciously a rare form of pancreatic cancer and complicated organ transplant procedures until she lost that battle on February 10th, 2010 at the tender age of 18. Later on that year, I decided to challenge myself, despite being emotionally and physically broken, and plan every summer from there on where I’d be following a passion of mine, developing a new interest, and checking another item on my “Must Do” list of life. I have always believed that life is too short, and that investing in one’s self should be everyone’s mission in life.” – Hanouf Aljuhail, creator of House of Butterflies.

Hippocrates (460 BC-370 BC) once said: "Healing is a matter of time, but it is sometimes also a matter of opportunity." Hanouf Aljuhail's heartbreaking journey from the bedside of her ailing sister, Heba Aljuhail, to the creator of House of Butterflies – has been all about finding an opportunity in times of great loss and defeat. When I met Hanouf in July this year, I was deeply moved by the remarkable grace and composure with which she narrated the touching personal tragedy that has motivated the creation of the visionary House of Butterflies – a place where colour, joy and inspiration 30

reside. “When I received the final call from my father from the USA, where Heba was being treated, I made the journey knowing all too well that my baby sister would not be there when I reached,” shares Hanouf, recalling the last few days in her sister's life. "And yet, I made the trip." At the time, Hanouf became the strength and comfort to her grieving family, but the fateful day had left a void inside her heart. Burdened by grief and disillusionment, Hanouf set out on her own to find her healing. She spent the summer living on a Spanish farm – away from family and friends – just watching the locals in olive-picking season,

and getting to know the simplest organic forms of life. The simplicity of their life brought some peace to her aching heart. “I was looking for an inspiration,” confides Hanouf. Weeks after that, and while walking through a beach town in the south of France called Juan Le Pin, she accidentally found her ‘inspiration’ in a tiny, colorful store. “There was this bag that was unique in structure, design and appearance. I was puzzled and I could not figure out what I’ll be using it for, but I knew that I ‘had’ to have it,” she recalls, laughing softly. However, once back to Kuwait, the colourful bag occupied a corner in Hanouf’s house for months - never

being used, and yet not completely forgotten. “Then one day, I was taking a trip to the dessert with my daughter and other family members, and decided to pack all my stuff in that bag. Instantly, everyone wanted to know from where I had bought the bag – and that’s how my quest began.” Hanouf’s research took her back to France and initiated a contact with the founder of the idea, Franck Boueri. “Through writing we discovered that Franck and I shared the same interests and goals. He welcomed the notion of exporting an initial shipment to Kuwait, and testing out the products’ popularity.” She learned that the products were organic in nature, made from 80% recycled material and produced by co-op communities in developing countries. “When I read the email, I knew that I had found an answer to my search for inspiration that year,” says Hanouf. Being

an advocate of eco-friendly lifestyle, Hanouf could not have asked for anything better. “I had learned and lived the eco-friendly way of life during my graduate years in the lovely greens of Boulder, Colorado,” explains Hanouf. So, it was natural for her to be elated when she found out that the project was a combination of environmentalism & social entrepreneurship. Although the concepts are relatively new in Kuwait, Hanouf knew she had to jump on the opportunity to spread the word through - what she hopes - would be very attractive, and possibly popular, products in Kuwait. The original products and designs are of a company based in Nice, south-eastern France and marketed under the Trademark 'La cerise Sur La Gateau', which means the 'icing or cherry on the cake', a saying popular in describing perfection in French culture. The Production work is done in Asia, which is represented in the creation

of the 'concept' of interlaced multi-coloured strips. The company contributes directly to socio-economic development of these communities by incorporating 100% local workforce in manufacturing. All products are fully hand made out of 80% recyclable materials. According to Hanouf, House of Butterflies aspires to be multidimensional – environmental, social, and charitable in nature. The project allowed Hanouf to start a charitable foundation in honour of her late sister – “One that wasn’t conventional, but an original charitable effort to be introduced in our society,” explains Hanouf, without elaborating on her future plans for the aptly named House of Butterflies, as it represents the significance and cheerfulness of colours in life through it's multi-hued products. "It is a family collaboration, but we aim to evolve into a common community practice in Kuwait," she added. The first batch of bags arrived in Kuwait in June 2011, and in less than 3 weeks, the entire shipment was a sel1-out! Hanouf relied on the website created by her husband, a Facebook page with product information and updates, and of course, the power of BBMs and Whatsapp message broadcasts. “My first success has been overwhelming. I have found tremendous support from family and friends who loved the project’s idea and the quality of the products, and therefore, became dedicated salespersons,” says Hanouf. Hanouf chose BACCH (Bayt Abdullah Children's Care and Hospice) to be one of the links to her project, since it was a favoured charity of her late sister, Heba. BACCH has been welcoming and appreciative of HOB for its support. For every KD 10 worth of sales, HOB will donate KD 1 to BACCH in honour of Heba Al-Juhail. “It was during the most difficult moments in my life, when I was fortunate to have my daughter, Dahlia, who paints a smile on my face every day. Dahlia, like my late sister Heba, is a colourful free spirit, who loves life and finds joy in every moment. Butterfly is a creature that epitomizes colour, freedom and joy, and I chose the ‘House of’ phrase added to the title, because I have a vision of an actual place that would be communitycentered in nature; a place where people come seeking inspiration,” shares Hanouf. Hanouf has much bigger plans for HOB, which she hopes to share with us in the near future. Recently, House of Butterflies has become the sole Middle East agent of the original company 'la cerise sur le gâteau'™ - the French company behind HOB products. The project is entering a new phase of expansion, designing and production of new products, which will be introduced in Kuwait in January of 2012. House of Butterflies not only brings colourful, ecofriendly products, but a heartfelt message to society. For more product information, visit HOB website www.hobq8.com or them on Facebook. For many soon-to-be brides, the amount of time spent on planning that ‘big day’ escapes logic. The classic white shirt is truly an understated must-have for every fashionista in question. From working an office-chic day look, to fabulously strutting to a glamorous dinner party, the white shirt is your blank canvas to artfully paint your style. Collaborating with a team of stylish bloggerettes, Goji Boutique showcases the ultimate lesson in styling the simplistic white shirt. Choosing from a selection of white shirts available on the online shopping hub, the blogging fashionistas were each requested to style a white shirt however they pleased, where each look communicated every woman’s fashion ethos. The end result, photographed by the talented Othman Al Othman, is absolutely divine. MeBlogging: “I like to follow thelatest fashion trends - but at the end I have my own sense of style which always tends to be classic and a bit elegant. I would love to go wild and super trendy, but I think I always tone it down." Confashions From Kuwait: “Dressed up or dressed down, this classic staple is a must-have for any girl worth her fashion salt. Until recently, as I have never noticed, I can easily count at least 7 white tops in my closet with different variations of the classic button-down white shirt. I remember

when I was in school, wearing the white shirt as part of the uniform, I honestly thought that it wouldn’t make a difference in my perception to that classic piece and that I would never wear it, ever again. Luckily, that did not happen.I found out that you can express your truest individual style when, in some cases, you forgo the trends and focus on classic clothing. Simply style these pieces with some statement accessories and the look will be anything but dated. When I styled my look for Goji’s photo shoot, I wanted it to come off as fun, fresh and relevant. I’m happy with the results, it came off chic and most importantly, I felt delightfully and utterly ‘me.’” Fouz, Khaleejesque: “Having a white shirt is a timeless essential in any person’s closet, and I love stocking up on them because they are so versatile! The shirt I styled had a dramatized origami-like collar; the shape gave an otherwise plain white shirt, a bit of dramatic flair. I paired the shirt with the structured black wrap jacket and basic blue jeans to create a very sleek and trendy look that can be worn day or night. Also, adding some accessories always brightens up an outfit and gives it that extra touch of charm.” Ansam, FiveOneEight: “A white shirt is an essential item in every woman's closet... I can never have enough of them! They can be dressed up

This look suits me very well.” Alya, Pomegranate and Patchouli: “My style is a blend of classic pieces with eclectic touches. I love to dress in monochromatic shades just as much as colorful ones. But I never go overboard when it comes to color (at least I hope I don't!). A good quality white shirt should be a staple in everyone's wardrobe. It can be dressed up, or down. I have more than 6 variations on the classic white shirt. The more the merrier!” Tidbit du Jour: “Our personal style is ever changing. It really depends on our mood or agenda on a particular day. We love to experiment with fashion but we always stay true to our love for clean lines, soft silhouettes and statement accessories. The white shirt has always been a wardrobe staple for us. We love its versatility and timeless quality. Here we paired it with a maxi skirt for a laid back chic look.”

AN IDIOT ABROAD: THE TRAVEL DIARIES OF KARL PILKINGTON by Karl Pilkington A cult celebrity due to his role in The Ricky Gervais Show, the most-downloaded podcast ever, Karl Pilkington has been accused of being a comic creation, so unburdened is he by complex thought—but that is truly just him. Given the choice, he'll go on vacation to Devon or Wales or, if pushed, eat English food on a package tour of the Mediterranean. So what happened when he was convinced by Gervais and Merchant to go on an epic adventure to see the Seven Wonders of the World? Does travel truly broaden the mind? LIFE AS I BLOW IT by Sarah Colonna Sarah Colonna believes that there are very different personalities living inside each of us, and that sometimes those personalities are at war with one another. One wants to have fun, not take things too seriously, and have that fourth drink. The other would like to get married, stay in, order Chinese food, and have a responsible, secure life. From her formative years in small-town Arkansas to a later career of dates, drinks, and questionable day jobs, Colonna attempts to reconcile her responsible side with her fun-loving side. Sometimes this pans out, and sometimes she finds herself in Mexico handing out her phone number to anyone who calls her pretty. She moves to Los Angeles to pursue acting, but for years is forced to hone her bartending skills; she wants a serious boyfriend, but won’t give up nights at the bar with her friends. She tries to behave like an adult, but can’t seem to stop acting like a frat boy. In the end, she discovers that there doesn’t have to be just one or the other. And if there’s one thing Colonna has learned from her many missteps, it’s that hindsight is always 100 proof.

MRS FRY’S DIARY by Mrs. Stephen Fry Stephen Fry's secret wife speaks out at last. "Enjoyed a nice cuppa this morning with a HobNob and Jeremy Kyle. There was a woman on there who'd been married 16 years without realising her husband was gay. Extraordinary! Which reminds me, it's our 16th anniversary in a few weeks. What a coincidence." Stephen Fry—actor, writer, raconteur, and wit. Cerebral and sophisticated, a true Renaissance man. Or is he? Finally, his secret double life—the womanizing, the window-cleaning, the kebabs, the karaoke—is exclusively revealed by Edna, his devoted wife and mother of his five, six, or possibly seven children. These diaries take us through a year in the life of an unwitting celebrity wife, and are rumored to include scandalous nocturnal shenanigans, advice on childcare, and 101 things to do with a tin of Spam. "A good diary should be like a good husband—a constant companion, a source of inspiration and, ideally, bound in leather."

IS EVERYONE HANGING OUT WITHOUT ME? by Mindy Kaling Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?” In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. truth or dare

JAYE SONIA By bazaar staff

How would your mother describe you in one word? Talkative. From a young age, I was very extraverted and outgoing. 38

By the time I was six, my mother was convinced I was going to follow my grandfather – who was a US Senator – into politics. Obviously, I didn’t. I am, however, still a

bit of a talker (and I still think my mother hopes I’ll be president one day). Lucky for most people, I learned to channel a lot of that energy toward more creative ends and ventured into writing during my late teens. So, while I may not command stadiums full of people with my elegant speeches (Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?), I may still unleash a few books on the unsuspecting World of Geekdom. [Is it too early to fold my hands together like Dr. Evil and quote Pinky and the Brain at this point in the interview?] How would you describe your mother in one word? Absent. While my mother was present for a good part of late my teens, it was really my father who raised my sister and me. I don’t want to give anyone the wrong idea… I love my mother dearly and we talk frequently, I’m just a lot closer to my father. What is the most insane question you’ve ever been asked? Can I take the dare on this one? (I’m just kidding). That’s not an easy question. I mean, what’s your metric for something like this? Asking me to paint myself blue and dance through the streets of New Orleans during Mardi Gras might strike a few people here as crazy, but would be perfectly normal for most of the Krew of Shenanigans (service industry folks from New Orleans…) You know, one man’s insanity is another man’s idea for a cartoon series... In all seriousness, I don’t think I get asked a lot of insane questions. In fact, the more I look back, the harder it is to find an insane question among the lot. Sure, I’ve had some odd questions based on a variety of misconceptions – both about me and about Americans – but nothing that I’d call outright insane. There have been some strange ones, though. I remember when I first moved out here to Kuwait and a few people back home asked me if I was living in a tent on a compound. I still had yet to perfect conveying the bulk of my sarcasm with a single glance, but I made every effort as I replied, “You’re not serious, right?” Sadly, they were. There was also the time someone asked me if all Americans drove like they did on Cops and if the roads were as dangerous as they saw on all those TV specials about high-speed chases. I had to laugh at that one. And no, not all Americans are crazy drunks having shoot-outs with the cops. What is the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done? That would have to be the time I met Trent Reznor (lead singer of the band Nine Inch Nails). I was living in New Orleans, La, and a few friends and I went out to see one of the Mardi Gras parades uptown on Tchoupitoulas (try pronouncing that!) Anyways, the four of us (my buddy, his wife, my

girlfriend, and I) were sitting at the Buddha Bar across the street from Nothing Records and getting ready for the parade. Being a long time fan of Nine Inch Nails, I kept joking I was going to go over, knock on the door, and invite the band over for drinks. My friend, Tom, laughed and called my bluff. Not to be undone so easily, I got up and started across the street. I was almost to the door when the cops pulled up and started trying to move a truck that had stalled in front of the studio. I walked up to see if they needed help and, a few seconds later, the front door of the studio opened. Out walked Trent Reznor. Needless to say, we got the truck moved and I got the chance to chat with Mr. Reznor. It was both a spontaneous moment and a surreal one – the type of moment that you don’t forget. What word in the English or Arabic language do you wish you had invented? Becoming. I’m a big fan of self-transformation and that word has always spoken to me. I think that’s one of the things that attracted me to RPGs, comics, and most of mythology in general, as well. The word becoming is intimately tied to the hero’s journey. In part, I blame Joseph Campbell. He wrote a little book on comparative myth called The Hero With a Thousand Faces in which I first noticed that theme. The more I looked into the historic art of our world,

the more I saw it. It didn’t matter if I was watching A Game of Thrones or reading Sandman – I kept finding this very common theme. It was that theme that kept me glued to my seat as I watched Frodo and Sam push into the darkness of Mordor or Luke Skywalker confront his father. It was the potential to transform oneself, to overcome our weakness. And if you ask me, it’s at the heart of every hero’s journey. Where would you like to live? / What is your dream retirement location? That’s a hard one. I travel a lot and I keep finding a lot of places I say I’d settle down in. As a result, I’m still sort of looking around. When I was in South Africa in 2009, I was in love with both Muizenberg and Glencairn. In 2007, I was in love with Berlin. In 2010, I wanted to live in Athens. I almost moved to Seattle, instead. A few months ago, it was Koh Samui, Thailand. I guess I’m a bit indecisive when it comes to settling down on this tiny little planet of ours. What I do know is this – wherever I finally do settle down, it’ll need a large dose of tranquil green and better be close to a large body of water. What is the first famous quote that comes to your mind? “You wish to be liked. I wish simply to be. One day you will know what that means, perhaps. And you will smile. Not against me. But with me.”

John Fowles wrote that in his supremely excellent book, The Magus. I love that book and, as far as fiction goes, it may be the best piece of literature I’ve ever read. I think it may be a little too honest for some folks. To me, it strikes at the heart of the human condition. It speaks to the essential in us and, at the end of the day, paints all the superficial things in their proper colors. It also challenges a lot of conventions that we accept as common, forcing us to look into the mirror. What animal best describes the kind of partner you’d be interested in? An owl. My ideal girl will have to be wise, commanding, and nocturnal. That doesn’t mean the sort of girl that dislikes the sun altogether (sorry Twilight fans), but one that is just as comfortable at night as she is by day. She’d also have to be a geeky gamer that loves to travel as much as I do. What do you miss about your childhood? When I was younger, there was a sense of wonder that accompanied every new thing or adventure. Every horizon had a mystery and the older I get – and I think this is common for a lot of us – the fewer mysteries there are to uncover. I think that sense of wonder is important and it’s what keeps us, as a people, dreaming. When we forget to dream, we die a little. I don’t want to live in a dead world. Give me wonder, give me mystery, and give me beauty. If you could change your name, what would you change it to? I don’t know that I would, to be honest. I’m pretty happy with the name my parents gave me – although I do go by the shortened version and have for a long time. I think if I had to pick a name that was serious and common (I don’t think people take anyone named Dr. Awesome all that serious), it would have to be Seth. Of course, Dr. Awesome would be a pretty cool name to have. How would you describe your handshake in one word? You guys and your adjectives! I swear! I think my handshake is pretty firm, but not overmuch. I’m not the sort of person that analyzes handshakes, though. I’m more of a “look me in the eye” person. I like to meet people that smile with their eyes and you just don’t get that from a handshake. What is the toughest part of your character? I don’t think I always listen as well as I should. It’s not that I don’t listen to what others have to say or that I don’t respect their ideas – it’s simply that I’m pretty self-involved and I’m simply not paying attention. So, I have to make a concentrated effort to actually listen to others. continued on next page...

Luckily, this is something I’m aware of and doesn’t hinder me too much. Who is your favorite ? The late Gary Gygax! Known as the father of roleplaying games, Mr. Gygax is the principle creator of the famous game Dungeons & Dragons (as well dozens of novels and games). If it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t have things like The Elder Scrolls, The Legend of Zelda, or World of Warcraft. 40

Sadly, he passed in March of 2008. What in the world do you least desire? I’m not particularly fond of pain. I don’t think most of us are, either. It has its place, though. So, while I don’t go out of my way to suffer, I think some pain makes us stronger and we should embrace our challenges. I think of this as “good pain” (going to the gym) as opposed to “bad pain” (getting hit by a car). So, I try to evaluate most situations in this light,

especially if I’m avoiding something. If it’s a challenge that I associate with good pain, I might put it off for a day or so, but I eventually make myself do it. Avoiding “bad pain” is really a no-brainer! (Really, does anyone go out of his or her way to get hit by a car?) What do you think is lacking in the world, which would make the world a better place? This is one of those questions where I think most people attempt to solve the world’s problems and eliminate poverty, war, and ignorance. I may sound a little cynical, but I think all of those are issues intimately tied to negative human traits that are all singlehandedly tied to an all too common problem – hypocrisy. If you ask me, the world would be a much better place if people simply took a little personal responsibility for their actions. I’m pretty accepting when it comes to things we can’t change in our lives. But when it comes to things we do have power to change – you know, things like helping each other, being safe, or even being polite – we should live by the words we speak. We have far more power in our lives than some people would have us believe. Why do you think most girls/guys like you? I think it’s a combination of factors, really. I’m very much an individual, so it’s easy for me to wander off and just do my own thing. I dig being me. I’m a geek, a gamer, and a writer – and I embrace all of that without accepting the social models most people tag us with. In fact, I think that’s one of my more charming qualities. I get The Big Bang Theory without being subject to the social label it suggests. We’re not all socially awkward and I’m a perfect example of that. In fact, I think I’m a little rebellious because of those labels, too. I’m definitely not afraid to mess with peoples’ stereotypes. MATERNITY STYLE By Bibi Al-Falah

Congratulations to the friend of mine that requested this article. Mothers-to-be are just as fashionable (and much cuter) than the rest of us! I have always wondered how pregnant women 42

handled their expanding bellies. Do you really need to buy an ENTIRELY new wardrobe? Everything from pijamas to gym clothes can become compromised as the months go by. After seeing my sister experience

three pregnancies and looking at the latest fashions out there, I realized that not that much really needs to change! Beginning with everyday clothes, the trend of leggings will really work in favor of expectant mothers. First of all, we love leggings because they are comfortable and it doesn’t matter if we gain or lose a little bit of weight, they fit us no matter what. I would advise to buy a few maternity-specific pairs because their elastic waistbands will grow with your belly. I have also seen maternity tights at Marks & Spencers, which can also be worn after pregnancy and are much more comfortable than regular tights that irritatingly pinch the waist. While leggings have been such a trend for the last few years, this led us to purchase plenty of tops to wear with them that are longer so that they appropriately cover them. As we know, leggings are not just regular pants so we cannot just wear them with short tops. All of these longer tops that we usually wear with leggings can be re-worked into a pregnant mommy’s wardrobe as normal tops, because the extra material that made them long will now perfectly cover their tummies. Another trend that doubles as maternity wear: flowy dresses. God knows we don’t always want to wear tight things, and every loose flowing dress in a woman’s wardrobe can be kept throughout a pregnancy. The only difference? It will be a little bit shorter, depending on how far along you are. This is not to say that a pregnant woman shouldn’t wear a tight dress—my sister said that she actually loved wearing form-fitting dresses while pregnant because the bump looked good in them. Any cotton or jersey dress that you have with stretch in it will still work while pregnant. Styles in darker colors that have some sort of draping or rouching at the sides usually look great. The best part? You can have as much pasta as you want at dinner without worrying about sucking your stomach in afterword. When it comes to working out, the tricky part is in the tops. Your workout pants will probably fit just fine, since they have a good deal of stretch in them. Your tops on the other hand (including sports bras) will need readjusting. You will only need about 3-5 new sports bras depending on how often you work out, and if you usually wear fitted sports shirts to the gym just switch to larger casual T-shirts from your closet. You could even steal some of your husband’s shirts when the bump really starts to grow. Finally, the main item of clothing that will present an issue during pregnancy are pants. There’s no way around it, so make sure to stock up on maternity jeans and pants with elasticated waists for optimum comfort. We have so many wonderful maternity stores in Kuwait now, including A Pea in the Pod at 360 and plenty of stores in the Avenues upstairs. There is even a maternity section in some high-street stores like Topshop. Happy shopping to all of the beautiful mommy’s-to-be out there!

THE BALLAD OF REEDAH By Craig Loomis

“There he is,” she whispers, nudging Reedah with her shoulder. “Where?” “There, the tall one with the Manchester United shirt. See?” As they slow, Reedah turns to take a good hard look. “Don’t stop,” says her mother, “Keep walking. Don’t stare like that, what’s wrong with you. Glance, glance, don’t stop.” “Are you sure that’s him? He’s the one?” It is then that the mother stops, grabbing Reedah’s sleeve extra tight. “Of course I’m sure. I’ve seen the photo, his mother showed me, and that’s him. I told you, it’s all planned. Now go, introduce yourself. Why do you always do this?” Reedah has not taken off her sunglasses since she entered the mall, and now, as they start walking again, she shakes her head. “I don’t think so, Mama. No, this will not work.” Getting a bigger, better grip on Reedah’s sleeve, she turns to face her daughter, whispering louder, “We 44

have been through this before, many times before, and enough is enough.” “Yes, yes, but it’s not right.” “What? What is this ‘not right’. What’s not to like?” “This,” and Reedah uses both hands to churn the air in front of her, “This. . . These coffee shop chats, these measuring sessions, these. . .” But her mother’s hand will not let go, will not give up that easily. “’This’ what? You haven’t even spoken to him yet, and look, look he has such a nice smile. See that? And the teeth, the whitest teeth. That something. Right? See that? Reedah, speak to the man, give him a chance, you never give them a chance. Do it for me, for your father. For Baba.” Because Reedah is 28 years old, soon to be 29, her mother has been worrying for the last four years. In fact, she tells Reedah that the whole family is worried as well, the uncles and aunts and cousins in Cairo are worried, asking quietly but firmly, ‘What’s wrong with Reedah? Twenty-eight, going on 29 and still nothing like a boyfriend in sight. Something not

right here, something all wrong. Now, I have a friend whose son. . . .’ In the end, with Mr. Manchester United looking down at his cellphone and now smoking a cigarette and now going back to his cellphone, he sits down, and Reedah, taking a deep breath, removes her sunglasses and walks toward him. Meanwhile, her mother moves to a nearby coffee shop, watching all, ordering a hot tea that she will never drink. Reedah introduces herself, shaking his hand and together they sit. Reedah has strong rough hands but only her mother worries about this. Her mother tells her to use lotion, creams. ‘Rub long and hard, every night. At 28 your hands should be soft and supple, everybody knows this.’ And for the next thirty minutes they talk the talk of such coffee shop meetings: of jobs, education, salaries, families. He tells two jokes about Arabs living in London. Finally, their talk all used up, he leans over and, looking down at the tabletop to brush off something that isn’t there, says, “You know, my parents are religious people, always

have been. Firm believers.” “That’s good,” she answers, turning ever so slightly to spy her mother. “Yes, and because they are religious people, they, and even me, would want my wife to understand the importance of covering, of wearing the hijab. My parents, and me too, we think this is a good idea. Don’t you agree?” Reedah uses both hands to push her hair out of her eyes, long black hair that on windy days swirls around her neck and face like a warm friendly mist. And so as he waits and smiles his white teeth, she returns his smile and says nothing. Later that night, with dinner over and the TV showing some Turkish soap opera that no one is watching, Reedah’s mother clears her throat, looks at the TV that no one is watching and turns to Reedah, saying, “What are you waiting for? They are all nice boys with potential; they come from respectable families. Sah? They have gone to the best universities, and some will become doctors,

engineers, important businessmen. Their futures are bright. Sah? What are you waiting for? What do you want?” Reedah, having heard this before, has learned that anger is no longer useful, and answers her mother by looking straight into the TV that nobody is watching, saying, “I don’t know.” “What?” “I said I don’t know.” “How can you not know at 28, almost 29? What’s to know? It’s marriage time, yes?” By now, tears are streaming down her cheeks, slipping into the corners of her mouth. As Reedah waits, hands folded, suddenly, like a kind of magic, her mother is holding a tissue, wiping her face clean, and now blowing her nose, her face still wet and red. “Reedah, time is running out. It already may be too late.” Meanwhile, on the couch, newspaper in hand, sits Reedah’s father, who, on hearing this last part, slowly closes the paper across his lap. He watches, listens and says nothing. Reedah glances at the newspaper, then

at him, and he smiles and winks. She gets up, announcing, “I’m going to my room now, Mama.” “To your room, always to your room. What is wrong with you, Reedah?” To this her father clicks his tongue. “What is wrong with you? I wonder, we all wonder. What?” “Good night, Mama.” Once in her room, locking the door behind her, Reedah is more tired than angry; these talks almost always exhaust her. And as she lay on her bed, staring up into the creamy white of the ceiling, she thinks, just for a moment, that she understands what is going on, why this hunt for a husband is not working, will never work, and yes, she knows that it has nothing to do with family names or college degrees or having soft hands, that it has nothing to do with straight white teeth. It has nothing to do with any of that, but she doesn’t know the name for what’s left. 45

TALKING KAIZEN Interview with Dr. Juliet Dinkha and Dr. Nisrine Aboul-Hosn By bazaar staff

Changing things up at the Kaizen offices, and settling into Dr. Juliet’s comfy chair, the bazaar team takes the lead in talking to the lovely Dr. Juliet and Dr. Nisrine about their role at Kaizen, the inception of ‘Mind 48

Bubble’, and what it’s like to work as a psychologist in Kuwait. Hi Drs.! Tell us about yourselves. Nisrine: I grew up in Kuwait, and then left to the

states to pursue my studies. It was a very natural decision for me to come back to Kuwait as my family is based here. Juliet: I was born here, yet we immigrated to the US when I was very young. After thirty-some years, getting married, and having my first child, AUK was offering a position to teach psychology. Coming back here was a very easy decision for me because I wished for my son to have an Arab upbringing, just like I did. Because I was a licensed clinical psychologist, I told the university that I needed to practice. Nisrine: When I came back here, we were at different practices, and we thought that it was natural to work together. We established Kaizen two years ago, and worked together at a different practice before that. Why did you choose psychology as a career? Nisrine: I always wanted to get into the medical field, but then when I entered university I didn’t like the nature of medical work, per say. I started to take classes in every field. When enrolled in psychology, it just clicked! It came naturally to me because I was a ‘people person’. I developed my studies, combining international studies with psychology. I was very focused on diversity, I liked figuring out what influenced people. When you speak a different language in the US you are an asset, as you can treat people in different languages. Given my upbringing and personality, psychology was simply a good fit. Juliet: For me, it really started when we immigrated to the US. Being an Iraqi-Arab, and living in the US as an immigrant, I was confronted with different cultural aspects. I had a counselor at school that had no concept of how I was raised, and I thought that it would be helpful to have someone who is multicultural and bi-lingual to suggest advice that wouldn’t go against my culture. My counselor suggested I get a boyfriend and go to dances, whereas that was definitely not allowed in my house! I kind of needed advice that would have avoided having my dad kill me! (Laughing) Since that time, and always being a people person; I wanted to get into a field that helped people. If I was going to live here, I needed to be Middle Eastern and American, and I wanted to help people like me. Are either of you specialized in certain fields, disorders, in psychology? Nisrine: We are both in the clinical field. Both of us have a strong background in diversity and multi-cultural issues. We’re very culturally competent, given our training abroad and our experience; that’s our general area of expertise. For me, I have a strong background in assessment; I also work with children and adolescents, which was originally my path. Juliet: When I first started, I also worked with many children and adolescents, yet now, as it seems that Nisrine works with the testing field, I focus on depression and anxiety, PTSD, bipolar or manic tendencies, and these tie in with my training in cognitive behavior therapy. Since Nisrine does so well with our younger clients, I work with most of our female and male clients, and couples.

What are the most common issues you see here? Juliet: For me, I see a lot more panic attacks, anxiety disorders, and depression. A sense of emptiness is very common, adjustment issues, and culture shock issues. I see so many people trying to find their sense of self. Nisrine: we see a lot of identity struggles here, and this is because we are a culture that is being bombarded with so many different value systems. Making sense of that is very difficult. What kind of therapies do you offer at Kaizen? Nisrine: Therapy, assessment, and training, in-house training and workshops, coaching, and also corporate training. Juliet: We also conduct a lot of behavioral disorder testing, work with learning disabilities and personality disorders. What are examples of the corporate services offered at Kaizen? Juliet: In our corporate training program, there is a twofold purpose; the first includes the employee assistance program. This is aimed towards encouraging a corporation to adopt a training program geared for their employees. For instance, Apple and Chevron in the US have these programs because they want to maintain their employees, rather than lose them. Whenever they see that an employee is having work issues, we help the corporation believe in the employee. We help by offering the employee our counseling services, and the corporation crisis management, where we step in and meet with the employee who is having issues on a confidential basis. Then they hear our assessment, and witness the positive outcome by this person’s ability to maintain his job. Another segment in our

corporate services includes the different trainings we coach, like anger management, stress management, conflict resolution, and positive work environment. Organizational psychology is a concept we wish to spread in Kuwait, and we are the first center that offers this service in Kuwait. Do you feel like the stigma of psychology is changing towards a more positive perception in Kuwait? Juliet: I see that with my students, yet it is so amazing how people come here, and visit clinics regularly, yet they don’t advertise it as much. Through my seven years here, I’ve seen more and more people embrace psychology, and parents who once refuted this field now come with their children asking for help. People like coming here and talking to people who don’t know them, who won’t judge them, and they find their comfort zone. As therapists, we adhere to confidentiality and that builds trust with clients. Nisrine: Absolutely, but it is amazing how this culture, particularly, is evolving. People really enjoy coming here, talking and ridding themselves of their worries. For me, the stigma is an aspect I understand very well, for it is a universal one. People here believe that problems are solved within the family and that they shouldn’t leave the family. I’d respond to that by saying that as members of this community, we are a collectivist society, and our role is to help out in the community as an extended circle. It really makes a difference when you talk to people and make that connection. What is the hardest part of your job? Nisrine: I really enjoy what I do, but the key for both of us is to essentially take care of ourselves. If you’re in

a position to take care of people, you need to take care of yourself. The people we see deserve our full attention, best form, and care, and in tougher and more severe cases, we need to be in our best form. I think the key is to time manage, as we teach, we train, and meet our clients. Juliet: Time management is the hardest thing; I’m a mom, I have two kids and a husband, I’m a professor, and trying to divide my time is challenging. In our job, we have to be multi-tasked and we need to put limits. As long as you offer, everyone will take. I have a hard time saying no. I try to make time for my family, my students, my clients, and even myself! Boundaries are hard in our line of work. How did the idea of Mind Bubble come about? Juliet: Well, bazaar staff first approached us to present their readers with an opportunity to discuss any issues they may have in a casual, and more importantly trust-worthy and safe environment. We loved the idea because this is how we are able to change the stigma of psychology with the youth. Readers wish to read these columns because now, they are used to the idea and enjoy reading a psychological perspective regarding a simple or complicated problem. Readers are sending us questions directly, and we assess the cases as they come. Some cases we invite them to come to the clinic, and some cases are simply for people with simple crises, in need of direction, and we give them our advice for free. Nisrine: We love the name, ‘Mind Bubble’, because everyone is in their own bubble when they think. Are clients’ families involved in their course of treatment? Nisrine: This is on a case-by-case basis, but given our cultural context families do get involved, they like to rally to help their loved ones. It’s very different from the US when people are on their own at the age of 18 or 21. We are a collectivist society and even women at the age of thirty come here with their mothers. That comes naturally. Juliet: This is where our bicultural and bilingual training comes in handy. If we were total foreigners, we would consider it strange if clients’ families were involved in their loved one’s treatment path. We’re better able to give advice because we can relate to our clients’ cultural context. I appreciate that about our culture, families like to give support. Last, but definitely not least, what are your guilty pleasures? Juliet: I shop and I eat! Going to the hair salon, and doing my nails. Spending time with my kids. Nisrine: Dessert, vegging out completely, getting my nails done. I love being a couch potato every once in a while, order food and watch movies. Dr. Juliet and Dr. Nisrine are bilingual and bicultural expert psychologists on various personal and social issues. Visit www.kaizen-ke.com. or follow us on www.facebook.com/kaizen2q8. 49

FACEBOOK TIMELINE 9 things to know now about the new profile By Mark W. Smith

NO NEW INFORMATION IS BEING SHARED. Yes, Timeline is bringing back a bunch of old posts. But these posts have long been viewable on Facebook. Before, a friend would have had to go to a profile and click again and again for more posts, but would eventually travel back in time. YOUR PRIVACY SETTINGS ON OLD POSTS WILL REMAIN. A post shared four years ago that was set to be viewable to just friends will continue to be viewable to just friends. The only concern here is in how a user's definition of friend has changed. A photo or status update that in college was OK for friends might not be OK for friends now, which might include coworkers. POSTS CAN BE EXPANDED. Timeline already tries to guess which of your posts will be the most interesting and it makes those viewable. It can try to guess by how many likes or comments a post has received. If there is a post that should be expanded and is not-like a new job or college graduation-you can expand it. THE ACTIVITY LOG IS THE BEST PLACE TO EDIT A TIMELINE. Facebook has built a very helpful new page called the Activity Log, which can be accessed from a profile page, that shows every single piece of content Facebook has from a user. Each item can be deleted or tweaked from this page. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY. If there is a post in your Timeline that you don't want to zap completely from Facebook, but don't want anyone to see, you can change the post's visibility to "Only Me."

Facebook's long-delayed massive overhaul to user profiles, dubbed Timeline, is finally available for all of the social network's more than 800 million users worldwide. Timeline, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg first showed off in September, is a complete rethinking of a user's profile page. It attempts to use the data already inside Facebook as a sort of digital scrapbook. Facebook users can now easily scroll back to previous years and see what they were saying and what they were doing. For some, this will be a nostalgic trip through a social network that has captured much of who we are. For others, it will be a bit terrifying to see posts from the early days of Facebook, when it was limited to college students who often shared way too much. Here's a look at nine things to know about the new Facebook. 50

THERE'S A SEVEN-DAY REVIEW PERIOD. Once Facebook is upgraded, users will be able to work through their Timeline and get things ready before it goes public. During the seven-day review period, the Facebook user will be able to publish it at any time. If he or she chooses to wait, it will automatically go live after the week is up. YOUR COVER PHOTO IS YOUR CHANCE TO MAKE A SPLASH. The most striking feature at the top of the new Facebook profile is the cover photo, which stretches across the page's width. The Facebook user's profile photo, which is seen across the site, is now just a small square. Most are using this opportunity to make the profile photo a simple face shot and have used the cover photo to show something more personal, like a pet or favorite vacation spot.

USERS CAN ADD OTHER LIFE EVENTS. Facebook is hoping that users flesh out their Timeline with information from B.F. (Before Facebook), too. Anything added to the Timeline can now be given a date. So, if a user uploads an old photo from summer camp, he or she can set the date to June 1995 so that it appears chronologically in the Timeline. THERE'S NO SENSE IN HOLDING OUT. Facebook Timeline will eventually go live for everyone on Facebook, whether or not the user has taken the time to prune and optimize the Timeline view. It's best to be proactive and make sure what people will see is what should be seen.

FOR A BET TER KCCC Interview with Adil Khalfan, Regional Director for the UHN based in Kuwait. By bazaar staff

In September, 2010, the University Health Network signed a five-year agreement for a fee of KD 37 million with the Ministry of Health of the State of Kuwait which will see UHN providing clinical expertise to the Kuwait Cancer Control Centre (KCCC) and to improve access to quality cancer services for the local population. Delighted with this news, we thought to ourselves, how else could we help? How can people get involved in this amazing feat? Perhaps many can consider this a drop in the sea, yet for anyone who’s had a run with cancer in any form—this is a ray of hope. Meeting with Mr. Adil Khalfan could only be described as an enlightening experience. For, not only does he have extensive experience in the field of quality improvement, strategy development, performance management and international health care, he is an exemplary source of leadership and an inspiration in the field of cancer care. As we sat down with Adil and the UHN team, located right next to the KCCC in the Al Sabah Hospitals complex, we thought about the basic way in which cancer is handled in Kuwait. How does a healthcare professional even begin to break the news to a patient? He states, “It’s hard for any healthcare professional to break that kind of boundary with any patient, as well as to be mindful of their ability to process that information in that instant of time, their education level, and their comfort level in this specific area. Delivering bad news is a skill that every health practitioner has to learn, and practice. Once they do that, they also need to inform the patient that help is available. This ability, truly, takes years to hone, and we wouldn't simply bring this 52

specialization to KCCC without building the foundation and the desired philosophy for it, and this requires an evolutionary code of conduct to happen.” What is the University Health Network? The UHN is a network of four highly specialized hospitals in Canada. We have Toronto General Hospital that specializes in transplant care; cardiac care, surgical and ICU care along with emergency and general medical care. Within those areas, because of our research and university affiliations, we have specific areas of concentration within each specialized program. Then there is Princess Margaret, which specializes in oncology and palliative care services. For instance, we would have a complete program dedicated to prostate cancer, with nurses trained specifically in that field. Thirdly, we have Toronto Western Hospital that concentrates on neurosciences, neurosurgery, orthopedics, community health, and finally Toronto Rehab that looks at all rehabilitation treatments. These hospitals are all colocated, and have evolved over the years in terms of complimenting one another. Being a regional center in Canada, we were able to cross a lot of medical milestones, like pioneering stem cell discovery, the discovery of insulin, and the first double lung transplant. These are all world-firsts; we invent, test, adapt and streamline. The agreement between the UHN and Kuwait is outlined through a five-year plan. What are the main objectives of the plan? Essentially, the five-year plan is to enhance the cancer services of Kuwait through the use of UHN/PMH’s leadership in the area of Cancer Care. In order to achieve this distal goal there are 9 key elements of focus. Some

of the key elements include knowledge-transfer, and making sure that the most up-to-date protocols and guidelines of the treatment of cancer are applied here at the KCCC. We aim to provide the KCCC with the wealth of information that we have accumulated over the years in terms of patient-care and the most advanced and effective treatment regimes. We don’t have to reinvent anything; our protocols simply need to be ‘Arabized’ within the Kuwaiti setting. Another objective is improving lab services; you can’t have a good cancer system without proper diagnostics including imaging systems. Looking at how the teams organize themselves is integral in providing multidisciplinary care to put a proper plan in place, because every patient is different. Clinical specialization is another objective of ours, and developing a humane, palliative care plan, because no one likes to think about the end of life, yet it’s very important. We need to present an end of life that shows dignity and resolution within the cultural context. We’ve also concentrated on specialized nursing specifically for those who are afflicted with cancer. We have also been given the opportunity to advise the Kuwait Ministry of Health on what is required in terms of a responsive and robust Information Management System for Cancer Care. They are currently evaluating this roadmap and evaluating how it fits with Kuwait’s larger National Health IT vision. I am most excited about helping KCCC develop, implement and sustain a healthcare quality-improvement system so that we can continuously improve the provision of safe, accredited care, and develope a high level strategic plan for cancer care in Kuwait. These 9 key elements

will help both Kuwait and Canada reach their ultimate goal of enhancing cancer services in Kuwait for Kuwait and the GCC. Our aim, hopefully in the future, is that the patient becomes the center of his or her treatment plan, patient-centric care, where everybody’s expertise complements the patient’s best interest with the most effective and cutting edge care. Are there any initiatives that are already underway? Over the past year, we realized that the centre’s quality system needs updating, revitalization and improvement, and we are very happy that the MOH has sought out to undergo an accreditation process for all the public hospitals in Kuwait. This shows real commitment of the Government to enhance the care available for Kuwaitis in Kuwait. It is our role to help the KCCC, and the MOH, pass accreditation for both the general hospital and specialized oncology standards of accreditation. Given your extensive research in the development and management of accountability agreements between hospitals and the MOH abroad, what is your view of the local system of communication, and accountability, between hospitals and the MOH in Kuwait? Accountability is a critical aspect of ensuring an effective and efficient public health system. There are numerous policies and procedures in Kuwait to ensure the appropriate checks and balances are in place, based on what I’ve observed so far. However, I am not to sure that the policies and procedures currently in place encourage a more team-based, multi-disciplinary, multi-professional approach to treatment. Furthermore, the current system, at times, may not be responsive to changing healthcare needs and the availability of important supplies and equipment needed for care. I am not saying that these supplies are not made available

but the timeliness in which they are provided needs to be re-evaluated. We need to change the philosophy to focus on what is needed for the better outcome of the patient rather than adhering to historic policies and procedures that are not responsive to current medical practice. Part of this is shifting the attention from doing simple counts to focusing on treatment outcomes and the factors involved in creating better outcomes. This may involve re-evaluating some of MOH policies and procedures, namely those that impact supplies and equipment tendering. Furthermore, accountably is multi-faceted, with factors including efficiency, appropriate use of resources, a safety plan, a way to audit and a way to prove positive outcomes. Using high level strategic planning, we will be able to identify specific goals and objectives, and create the key performance indicators to measure positive outcomes over the next ten or twelve years, even after our partnership is done. This goes against the concept of how much money is saved, versus how the money is spent. What changes are happening at the Kuwait Cancer Control Center, KCCC, in terms of patientcare activities, including radiation medicine, medical oncology, and surgical oncology? We’ve spent the last year observing, and planning out strategies for the KCCC, and while that may seem overwhelming, it is absolutely essential for us in order to be better equipped to improve cancer-care activities. We’re also implementing rigorous engagement programs, whereby, every month, a team specialized in a certain type of cancer flies in to work with the KCCC teams in providing more information, assessment, and modeling multidisciplinary approaches through training and educational lectures in disease-specific care. They also provide their recommendations and strategic direction as to where we are headed with this

partnership. They will come here for this period of five years in order to build a relationship with the KCCC. New IT plans are in place, yet they are pending approvals from the concerned ministries. We're working towards empowering physicians to better handle patients, and we’ve been impressed with the KCCC’s need and desire to better themselves. We've already seen a difference in the nursing staff and their knowledge of cancer-specific nursing through the UHN/De Souza Nursing curriculum. We have helped to implement a surgical checklist so that we can improve safety in the Operating theatre as well as enhance team function within the OR. We have provided numerous second opinions and consultations for our KCCC medical staff through the partnership without having to travel abroad for world-class care. In some instances where there is a very complex case, UHN/PMH has treated patients in Toronto. A further benefit of the partnership is that when these patients return to Kuwait after treatment in Toronto, they are cared for with the same protocols and guidelines in Kuwait upon their return. How will the UHN enrich the general knowledge of Kuwait’s citizens about cancer? Is there a support system being put in place for cancer patients in Kuwait, as well as their relatives? We were very excited to see the strong family ties that is characteristic of Kuwait. While they may know very little, or sometimes too much, whereby they sometimes hide integral information from a patient who needs to know, they are definitely very involved and the best part is that we can leverage this strong security net that is familial support. It is really up to us as a medical community, and the MOH, to change the stigma of cancer in Kuwait. It’s so important for our generation to start to change that mindset of our parents and our grandparents, and instead, mobilize as a family unit to get through cancer together. Besides that, we are focused on bettering clinical care, especially in specialized nursing and developing surgical checklists that are compatible with the WHO’s standards. Besides technical organization, the surgical checklists aid in increasing teamwork, where the whole surgical team knows one another on a personal level. Can volunteers join the different programs and initiatives conducted by the UHN in Kuwait? Part of our public relations and engagement plan includes a broader awareness of cancer. This isn’t going to happen right away, and we’re working on getting in touch with more of the not-for-profit organizations to better coordinate activities which would involve the general public, especially volunteers. If people want to volunteer, we would happily meet with them and see how they would like to get involved.

THE EMBRACE OF SILENT-ERA MELODRAMA ‘The Artist’ tells the tale of a silent film star whose career is derailed by sound By Jim Quilty

Cinema was gutted of magic, some say, as soon as someone decided actors’ performances should be heard as well as seen. Indeed, there’s no shortage of (spoken) movies that tell stories of actors who failed to make the great leap from silent film to “the talkies.”

Few of these have quite the panache of Michel Hazanavicius’ 2011 The Artist. The film has won or been nominated for 15-odd festival awards since it debuted at Cannes this spring – where the film’s lead Jean Dujardin walked away with the best actor prize. Most-recently the movie has been nominated in America’s Golden Globe awards, which usually bodes well for the Oscars. The Artist tells the story of George Valentin (Dujardin), a Hollywood silent film star whose array of talents were common to heartthrobs of that era – a dashing smile, a smart dress sense and an easy grace on the dance floor. He also displays more affection for the wee mongrel that co-stars in his films than he does for blonde starlets, whether his leading ladies or his wife. The story opens in 1927, when Valentin is at the top of his form and popularity. After the premiere of his new movie, he has a chance encounter with a pretty young woman who stumbles into him while trying to retrieve her dropped purse. An aspiring actor, she mugs for the scrum of photographers and kisses Valentin on the cheek. She’s so photogenic, in fact, that the venerable trade paper Variety runs a front-page spread on the mysterious encounter, under the banner headline “Who’s That Girl?” 54

“That girl” is Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo) and she’s soon at Valentin’s studio applying for work as an extra – they’re looking for a pretty girl who knows how to dance. She gets the job but Valentin’s producer, Al Zimmer (John Goodman), is greatly annoyed that Variety’s gossipmongering bumped the film’s coverage to page five. When he sees Peppy, he banishes her from the set and only Valentin’s intervention allows her to keep her part. Peppy and Valentin demonstrate an instinct rapport on the dance floor and more than a spark of mutual attraction, but nothing comes of this initially. Valentin is married (albeit passionlessly), so, having got a little career boost from him, Peppy devotes herself to conquering Hollywood, which she does. A couple of years later, Valentin is in the midst of his latest swordplay-fueled period drama when Zimmer pulls him into his office to show him the next big thing in movies: sound. The star is so amused by the sight of screen actors talking that he can’t control his laughter. Zimmer warns him that this is the way of the future, to which Valentin replies, via intertitles, “If that’s the future, you can keep it.” Valentin lives to regret his words and for the balance of The Artist his career declines just as rapidly

as Peppy’s ascends, until they find a way to correct the imbalance. The Artist is a nostalgia-drenched paean to the silent movie era and all of its conventions – the unconscionably sentimental stories, the unrelenting bombast of the score (here composed by Ludovic Bource) and, of course, the actor’s scenery-chewing pantomime mugging at the camera. In this latter regard the film deploys an impressive array of talent, with the principals complemented by such fine character actors as James Cromwell and Malcolm McDowell. But there is much more to this film than sentiment, thanks to the cinematography of Guillaume Schiffman, which – along with a sparingly clever sound design – disciplines the flow of nostalgia with a filter of artistry. Immediately after their on-set dancing encounter, for instance, Peppy looks for Valentin at his dressing room. The star later returns to find Peppy pantomiming a lover’s embrace with him – having run one hand through a sleeve of his jacket, then back to her own waist. Such moments, and there are several, radiate a visual (and aural) imagination that elevates The Artist above the sentimentality that inspires it.

IMAGINE CUP The Oscars of innovation By bazaar staff

In a world where technology dictates our daily functions, from our Smartphone alarms waking us up in the morning, our coffee makers programmed to alleviate our morning coffee-making blunders, to having our lives meticulously programmed into one single device, we expect technology to go as far as to heal the world of its many wounds. We expect technology to solve world hunger, end illiteracy, save the environment, and combat disease. This, however, is easier said than done. These imagined hopes might seem illogical to many, yet they are feasible to some who dare to dream. Theoretically, and practically, with technological entities like Microsoft, technology is the medium for the extraordinary. An amalgamation of talent and student innovation, Microsoft’s Imagine Cup makes the extraordinary possible for those who dream. One of the world’s premier student technology competitions, the Imagine Cup allows student innovators from all over the world to come together to solve world issues through technology. In essence, the Imagine Cup is a year-long competition, where student competitors undergo country finals, followed by regional finals, to finally compete in the world event, which for 2012, is being held in Sydney, Australia. For students in Kuwait, Microsoft proudly offers an impressive support system, housing the only Microsoft innovation Center in the 56

Gulf region, allowing students to utilize Microsoft’s latest technology, including computers, applications and programs, completely free of charge. Combining creativity with the latest technologies available to solve problems, the Imagine Cup enables students from all over the world to make a positive change - with ground-breaking technologies in promoting road safety, medical efficiency, and ending literacy, more than one million students have participated. Last year alone, the first Arab Team from Jordan won 3rd place in the Software design competition. Each team competing created applicable solutions that make a real difference in the world. Marking a milestone for Arab talent, team Oasys from Jordan went above and beyond in creating an application that enables paralyzed patients to be able to physically use computers and technological devices via sensor stimuli, where with one simple movement of the hand, a patient could technically allow for keyboard simulation and mouse movement. In essence, patients virtually connect to the physical world, using Microsoft tools and technologies as envisioned by Project Horizon. Furthermore, a team from Oman won second place in the Multimedia competition, giving us a total of two Arab teams who won in the finals of the Imagine Cup in 2011. Besides the astounding and challenging frontiers presented in the Software design competition, the

Imagine Cup also allows young innovators to create games for Xbox and windows to creatively solve the world’s toughest problems. Whether in 3-D or 2-D, multilevel, single or multiple players, students’ design skills are tested to make the gaming platform the center for changing the world. Looking to independently compete? Then look no further than the IT Challenge, a chance that makes the opportunity of flaunting that secret brainpower a feasible reality. In the IT Challenge, you will be tasked with developing, deploying, and maintaining IT systems that are efficient, functional, robust, and secure, while demonstrating proficiency in the science of networks, databases, and servers and an intimate understanding of how it must all fit together, both on-premise and in the cloud. With country finals soon taking place in Kuwait, students at various universities are getting excited to compete on all fronts. Watch out for the Imagine Cup booths, presentations and seminars coming to your university. Not only so, many national and international institutions feel like it is their role to support this initiative, including Zain Communications, The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, Burgan Bank, Asus and Wamda. In Kuwait, Zain Communications is supporting the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2012 Phone Challenge to create software that can really make a broad impact in the world. This is a chance to make the work of Kuwait’s young talent available on a mobile device to be used by millions. The top three winners will be granted prizes from Zain for the best phone application, but to get a chance to go the Imagine Cup finals, students must submit their application online by visiting the Imagine Cup website portal. Great tools are provided to students to install to the Windows Phone and start problem solving and creating, including Expression Blend 4 for Windows Phone, Visual Studio Express for Windows Phone and the Windows Phone Emulator."

BATTLEFIELD 3: A REVIEW Plus some tips to help you along… By Jaye Sonia

When it comes to the Battlefield franchise, I’m a little late to the game (pun intended). While I did get a chance to play the original Battlefield 1942 when it came out in 2002, I never really got into it. Like most of my friends, I was absolutely in love with Bungie’s Halo. It was the game to play and each subsequent release just got better. This lasted up until I moved to Kuwait. It was here that I discovered the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare games. As a result, I missed out on much of DICE’s Battlefield franchise. Fortunately for me, most of my coworkers were big fans of the Battlefield series and when rumors about 3 started to circulate, they raved about it. I decided to check what others were saying. After a trip to YouTube (and 58

some time spent reading comments), I started getting excited and combed the web for more information. This led me to BF3Blog.com. Soon after, I was caught up in the Battlefield 3 hype. So, when the game released last November, I went out and picked it up. I’ve been playing since. This is, of course, a small (but incredibly fun) problem because I find myself playing a lot more Xbox than normal. In fact, it’s making it hard to sit down in my office without firing it up. It’s also made it harder for me to attend to a lot of those other important things – things like writing, playing World of Warcraft, or harassing people on Facebook. Oh, and don’t get me started on Skyrim (and the time I do not have to play it).

What’s so awesome about this game? Well, the maps for one. Unlike so many of the other games I’ve played in the past, the maps have a great deal of detail that is user-responsive (the destruction is all powered by DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine). So, when you plant some C4 on a wall and blow it open, the debris rains down and stays down. In some cases, this debris can even kill an enemy (or you). I’ve died more than a few times from “bad luck” when the wall of a building fell down on me. Not fun. The size of the maps is also a big part of what makes this game awesome. Whether you’re playing Operation Firestorm or Caspian Border, you’re going to find all sorts of nooks and crannies to hide in and – if you’re good enough – snipe from. The game also takes

into account fields of fire (from all directions), so a good team can hold locations and even pin down enemies in their home base. The Metro map (during a CQ game) is a great example of this. Of course, there are vehicles to take into account, as well. Depending on the perks unlocked for a particular type of vehicle, you can do all sorts of things. Generally, heavy armor rips through the ground troops pretty quick, but those same troops are laying down C4, mines, and then blasting you with RPGs, as well. All in all, it’s a pretty even playing field in that regard. Also – driving tanks over cars just wins. But it’s not just tanks. It also has a host of other vehicles – everything from the Russian Su-39 to the American MH-6 “Little Bird.” So, whether you want to drive around the massive maps (Operation Firestorm, Caspian Border), strafe ground targets (Kharg Island) or hover over the small, concentrated ones (Damavand Peak, Noshahr Canals), you can. Better still, the vehicles have their own unique weaknesses. So, ground troops can remove vehicles from the field of battle, as well. So, you have a host of targets – both in the air and on the ground – to consider. Overall, I’ve found the game to be incredibly balanced and individual soldiers are capable of as much damage as their armored counterparts, without exception. So, while I love getting in my tank time, sometimes it’s safer to just snipe. Battlefield 3 is enjoyable in campaign mode, offering an immersive and interactive setting. The opening dialogue reminded me of several service members

I know and definitely entertained me. However, the game really shines when you put in Disc 1 and select multiplayer. Not only do the dynamics of the game change (the fields of battle open up considerably), the number of players (with varied skill levels, tactics, and goals) changes how each map is fought almost every single game. Even if you have an established routine, you find others that are ready to counter it or who have developed their own work-around. It requires a lot of teamwork and even strong, solo players will find coordination to their advantage when playing certain games (like CQ) on larger maps (like Caspian Border). But this wouldn’t be a G&G article if I didn’t share a little inside info – tips in this instance – that might just make your game easier (especially if you play an engineer). 1) Engineers - mine choke points. For example If you’re playing on the Russian side of the Canals map, don’t be afraid to rush forward and mine the launch ramps - liberally. Not only will you get more than a few “vehicles destroyed,” you’ll also grab some nice kills. It also limits vehicle availability to the American side. 2) Support – C4 is your friend. Not only can you mine choke points (as you would with… you know… mines), you can also plant it on light attack vehicles (like jeeps) and drive them into bigger things (like tanks), jumping out shortly before impact and watching them roll right into the enemy target (and making a very big boom). Extra cool points when you turn the helicopters into bombs. 3) Assault – There’s something exceptionally

cool about being a medic with a shotgun, but it’s even cooler on small maps like Metro. Not only can you drop a lot of meds out for team heals (and points), you can become a pretty reliable flag defender by keeping your squad healthy. The cool part about the shotgun, though, is what you can do with it when you keep on grinding. After a magic number of kills, you get a scope for it. Yes, I typed that. If you haven’t seen it already, pop over to YouTube and enter in “Viking Shotgun.” You’ll see what I mean. It’s simply brilliant. 4) Recon – While I tend to hide and snipe when I play this class, this class becomes more of an asset when guided weapons unlock for your various allies and you unlock the SOFLAM. At that point, you can simply paint targets and let your allies hit them from cover. Hello, Mr. Javelin… 5) ALL – Just because you have flares, doesn’t mean you should use them. If you’re new to air combat, don’t pop flares as soon as you see the “lock” icon. Wait until you see the “Inc” (for incoming) icon and then hit your flares. Otherwise, you’re eating that missile. 6) ALL – Fly and snipe. Just because there isn’t a ladder doesn’t mean you can’t get there. There are a few maps with amazing sniping locations that can’t be accessed from the ground. But get your buddy to fly you up and you can really harass the enemy. I’d like to give a special thanks to the guys on my regular B3 squad (Xbox Live) for all their advice, tips, and tricks: Archangel1onu, ToxicAnimal, Inside_Yo_Car, Voorhees76, and Pirate-Roberts77 – all of you make this game just a little more fun. I’d also like your dog tags now. 59

Loaay’s Two Cents Got business problems or challenges at work? With his Two Cents column, Loaay Ahmed shares his expertise in strategic management consulting to help managers, employees and entrepreneurs thrive.

Q

I want to encourage my employees to have a professional look and behavior. I made a list but found it too long and I was afraid of a negative impact. What are the most essential points that I should focus on? LA: Each Company has to determine what works best for their brand, however, there are common guidelines that can and should be shared in any workplace. For a start, a laid back grooming look like the EightiesGeorge-Michael with the stubbly beard is not suitable for every working environment. Personal phone calls are acceptable – we can't expect employees' lives to stop because they're at work. But too many personal calls cause distraction to the other employees around. RING RING: Being LOUD on the phone is inconsiderate to colleagues, think ‘library or museum’ communication codes. Keep in mind that smelling like a talking ashtray after lunch break is not attractive. Speaking of smells and breaks, food stinks sometimes. Chicken curry sandwich aroma in the office or the shop is not an exciting scent for visitors. Also, talking too openly about beliefs can cause gaps in relations. Whatever you believe in, keep it in your heart. Last but not least, improper attire is wrong on many levels. And by improper I mean both extremes, the too casual "I couldn't bother dressing up" and the over-the-top flashy "I'm going to party with friends later and I don't want to go home first to change". Having said all that, it's important for employees to be themselves. They can do all the things that make them comfortable as long as their behavior matches with the brand culture of the company they work for… and that’s just my two cents.

Q

Ultimately, every company wants to generate the highest returns for its investors. So, how do you define corporate success? Is it by who made the biggest profit, growth percentage, or something else? I'm curious. LA: As with professionalism (see above) the definition of success differs from one company to another depending on their journey and where they want to reach. If a company was losing money and they manage to breakeven by the end of the term they set for themselves then that's success. However, success in the corporate world is not always defined just financially. Some companies have social, ethical and environmental goals and they will not consider their financial achievement successful if they didn’t reach the other objectives. There are certain factors if you’re interested in relevance. For example, in Profit Share you measure the percentage of profit your company gained

compared to competition. In Market Share you measure how many customers you have from the pool of consumers. Here’s an interesting one: Revenue per Employee, which is calculated by dividing the company’s revenue by the number of employees to measure the quality of staff in generating income for the business. In this case, if your revenue last year was KD2 million and you have 100 employees, then your R/E is KD20,000. If a competitor had KD3 million in revenue and 300 employees, then you’re more successful because their R/E is only KD10,000. You can only measure your bottom line when you have defined it first…and that’s just my two cents.

Q

I have a plan to approach a number of potential investors to pitch my business project. Other than showing good numbers, what else can I do to convince them to join? LA: Many investors think of one line when they see an opportunity. This line is what Rod Tidwell, a character played by Cuba Gooding Jr. in the 1996 movie Jerry Maguire, said to Jerry (Tom Cruise): “Show me the money.” When investors evaluate different opportunities they look at a number of things revolving around the money they’re promised in thick prospectuses and endless presentation slides. They look at risk factors, duration, realistic potential return on investment, quality of the management team, uniqueness of the product/service and its demand, and more. If your project also has a social path, then approach only those who care about making money while helping society. Otherwise, they’ll see it as a bad opportunity. To build a persuasive pitch, address all the points above to make it difficult for them to say no. Pay close attention to how the industry appeals to the type of investors you’re approaching. Are they interested in the type of product or service you’re offering? Do they understand it? Is the revenue scale that’s generated by the industry you’re in considered substantial enough for them? For example, Petrochemical plants and factories generate more revenue than Retail. So, you’ll approach investors with deeper pockets for the former than you’ll do with the latter. If your plan is to approach family and friends to invest in your project, then think twice. Money has a way to test close relationships. If you made them profit, they might want more. If you lost their money, they might not forgive you for it. Either way, you have to think if your project is worth crossing the forbidden zone…and that’s just my two cents.

Q. I am a 60 year old non-Kuwaiti female, who has been living in Kuwait for the last 30 years. Have two daughters, who were both raised and educated here. Now, they are both married, and living in Europe. My husband has been discussing retirement and the potential of moving back to our home country, since our second daughter married this summer and moved with her husband. I know this is important to my husband but life in Kuwait is the only one I know, with regards to friends and socialization. I love vacationing in my home country, but I can’t imagine living there forever. Thanks, Concerned loving wife. A. Any change is difficult but it can also be healthy. We can appreciate you being scared of starting a new life and routine, but also your husband's need to be in his home country is important. He is probably feeling like the both of you have worked hard for so many years; raised, educated and married your two daughters, and now you both deserve to have a comfortable and relaxing retired life. We think it is very important for the both of you to discuss your fears, regarding this stage of your life. Relocating to your country is still an 64

adjustment that requires establishing a new system and routine, but it can also be very nice in terms of reconnecting with family, exploring things you have not done before and relaxing. We recommend you may want to spend half of the year in your home country and the other half here in Kuwait. This satisfies both your need and your husband's. Q. My 12 year old son has been having academic and behavioral problems for the last two years. One of his friends approached me a few weeks ago and told me that two years ago, at his old school, he was bullied and beaten up by a group of boys. I told my husband about the situation and he minimized it, saying “boys will be boys” and that our son “needs to defend himself and be a man”. Although I can appreciate what my husband said, I am worried about my son as he has become very rebellious and aggressive at home, and has no academic motivation. Thanks, worried mother. Adult College Student A. It is very common to see deterioration in behavior and academics, after experiencing a traumatic and emotional event such as bullying. This matter is not to be minimized as it can have

long term emotional effects on your son’s identity and self confidence. Your son is likely scared, feels like he couldn’t defend himself, and as a result is acting out his anger and frustration. It is critical for you and your husband to discuss this issue and then speak to your son about your observations regarding his behavior and academics. You can also access services from the school counselor. It is also recommended that you seek a consultation from a child/adolescent psychologist who can help you better understand the impact of bullying and how to assist your son in regaining his confidence and channeling his emotions in a healthy manner. Q. My brother and I started a business a few years ago. He was living abroad at that time and was a silent partner in the company. He moved back this year and I encouraged him to become more active in the company, which is great as he has great ideas and helps out a lot, but I don’t feel very comfortable as I feel that I can’t handle this dual relationship. Thanks Confused Brother A. Your feelings are quite normal as you are struggling between maintaining a professional

Dr. Nisrine relationship and a personal relationship. It is never easy and it will never be the same as any other business relationship with a stranger. The key is to speak openly with your brother, starting out with all the positive aspects of him joining the company and then discuss some of your concerns at this dual relationship. Maybe your brother also feels the same and both of you can be transparent at your expectations of each other and the company. It sounds like this relationship requires different boundaries and delegation of separate duties so that each person is responsible for one aspect of the company, and no one feels that the other is doing more or less. Q. I am a 38 year old female, who just broke off a 1 year engagement. Before getting engaged I was very career focused and had put off the idea of marriage given my age and belief that I can be satisfied with my career, friends, and family. When I met my ex-fiancé, these ideas changed and I allowed myself to broaden my plans for the future and redefined my own

identity. Since the engagement ended, I feel so confused. I can’t simply say that I will go back to my old thoughts and satisfactions and I also can’t imagine investing myself emotionally in another relationship. I feel I have lost my last chance of being a wife and mother and should just reorient myself to being an independent career woman. Thanks, Worried independent women. A. These days many individuals, not only women, feel that at times it is quite impossible to have a career and a social life let alone a marital life, given the pressures of life and the inability to time manage. Women especially may find it difficult, particularly with the added roles of being wife and mother. Because of this, some women opt to have either a career or a family life. This, however, shouldn’t necessarily be the case. It seems that you have a successful career, which took time, effort, and many compromises. You got used to being a working woman and as such may have shifted your thinking to such an identity. After meeting your ex-fiancé, new doors opened, which came with new emotions and

identity struggles. In a sense you started thinking differently and allowed yourself to feel things you had never felt before. Now, after breaking off your engagement you are undoubtedly disappointed, hurt, and very confused. However, since you took the step to meet and get engaged, it sounds like you were ready to do both, marriage and career. Having one bad experience should not be an obstacle to you trying a new relationship so that you don't let go of your dreams of becoming a wife and mother. Remember, how bad can it get? You were able to work through your feelings the first time; the second time is not going to be the same. Take a risk so you don't live your life regretting the unknown. NATURE’S HELPING HAND NBK’s volunteer team undertaking campsites By bazaar staff

Camping trips are back. Putting up tents, getting the charcoal ready, the smell of roasted chestnuts and the buggies placed on standby, everyone is wrapped up in coats ready for the cold weather. This is winter, one of the best seasons in Kuwait to enjoy with the family. But along with the fun comes something not so pleasant: littering. The National Bank of Kuwait’s (NBK) volunteer club decided to tackle the issue directly by going to different campsites and distributing waste bins in different locations. Volunteers handed out pamphlets with safety and environmentally friendly tips, to help in creating a fun, safe and a healthy environment. The idea started with the support of the mother campaign Think Twice, which is focused on encouraging people to take better care of Kuwait’s environment. Other small events and environment-focused initiatives 72

took off from there, such as the Walkathon, the beach cleanup and energy conservation efforts. The campaign began on 2nd of December. Early in the morning, buses took off from NBK’s headquarters, heading to different camp locations, to start the desert cleanup campaign. “Our main concern was not just to clean, we wanted these sites to stay clean,” Hussam Mansour, an NBK staff member and volunteer explained. “We wanted campers to know the reason behind this movement.” NBK, the first national bank locally and regionally, is known for its great contribution to society and for supporting Kuwaiti businesses and organizations. NBK’s volunteer club started in early 2007, with the concept of building awareness and shedding light on ways to improve the community’s everyday lifestyle; for example, one of the main ideas was the conservation of electricity.

First time volunteer Yousif Al Eidan was surprised by the support campers were giving, “It’s very fulfilling, team work and the feedback people are giving makes this worth the time and effort.” Al Eidan saw the value in the cleanup effort, “Knowing that many campers lacked the information we were giving out, meant we were on the right track.” The volunteer club is made up of NBK staff members from different divisions, all of whom are motivated to give some of their spare time to the improvement of the environment and community by building the right foundation of awareness of why it’s essential to conserve energy, remove trash and keep the surroundings clean. “People were very interested. We found that many of the details we were pointing out, campers were not aware of,” said Marcel Khaddaj, who expressed his feeling of being a firm believer in the cause. He continues, “the fact that I am a volunteer and helping in spreading something that will improve the environment gives me great satisfaction.” The National Bank of Kuwait was named the ‘Best Bank in the Middle East’ in 2011 by the top three financial publications, EuroMoney, Global Financial and The Banker. NBK believes that an organization should work internally and locally to have the right foundation. “Being a young Kuwaiti citizen, working in the National Bank of Kuwait meant I had to take part volunteer work was a great way to give back to my society,” explained Yacoub Al Baqer. “I grew up going camping with family and relatives, keeping this great tradition going meant we, too, had to take care of our country.” NBK’s cleanup campaign runs from December until the end of March.

BEAU-TIQUE COSMETICS TALKS ABOUT TANGLE TEEZER The "show-your-hair-some-love" detangling brush that's taken the hairdressing industry by storm.

A unique hairdressing tool, the Tangle Teezer easily banishes knots and tangles in all hair types instantly and has become a modestly priced, modern styling must-have. How does it work? Ergonomically designed to fit comfortably into the palm of the hand, its key feature is the inclusion of individual teeth designed not to grip the hair, as with conventional brushes and combs, but with the ability to glide through each section and break down knots and tangles on impact. The action of both sets of teeth, which have different but harmonious designs, is to flex and then flick back to form and this aids the hair’s natural de-tangling ability. The configuration and the distance between the long and short teeth are paramount; with each stroke through the hair two separate actions are performed. As a result hair isn’t damaged or lost through brushing and neither is the scalp adversely affected, as there is no pulling or tugging involved. What styles is it great for? • Suitable for wet or dry hair • Perfect for color-treated locks • Detangles long, knotty wet hair super quickly • Glides through European, Afro and Asian hair textures 74

• Ideal for the junior anti-brush brigade that parents & kids dread • Tear free hair brushing zone for children • Untangles extension hair – real, synthetic or wigs • Effective on coarse, curly and fine hair prone to knotting • Achieves the most amazing backcombing effect Tangle Teezer comes in the following designs: Original Adding a professional touch to your hair at home is easy with the Original Tangle Teezer - the detangling brush that's taken the hairdressing industry by storm. Since launching, Original Tangle Teezer has excited top stylists and grabbed by customers in droves. Why? The answer is simple. It's a brush that's proved itself the only reliable solution to banish your hair of tangles like nothing else does. Not only is it a brush that effortlessly makes your style manageable, Original Tangle Teezer keeps hair healthy too, encouraging the return of natural hair thickness. It also acts as a great finishing tool by boosting shine and giving instant luster. Compact Die-hard fans of Original Tangle Teezer no longer need to carry it around now there's a new styling brush made for styling on the go. Hairstyles that go

absent without leave are put back into place quickly with the Tangle Teezer Compact Styler. Cute in size, dependable and giving the same great results as Original Tangle Teezer, the Compact Styler brush fits stylishly into the palm of your hand and pops easily into your bag. APRIL 20 - MAY 20

GEMINI

MAY 21 - JUNE 21

The year begins on a good note, dear Pisces, with friendly energy and benefits through your connections. Friends and lovers can have exciting news around the Full Moon on the 9th. On the 12-14th, something from your past or something that was previously hidden, such as a good deed, comes to light and brings you benefits. Support from others is forthcoming in January. This is a strong month for presenting ideas, networking, and group endeavors. Financial and partnership matters may require revision starting in the last week of January, however.

CANCER

The year begins charmingly for you, dear Aquarius, with a nice balance of work and pleasure in your forecast. The first few weeks of January are typically private ones for you. However you are starting this year with quite a bit of attention. You are certainly never short of admirers! The 12-13th are particularly strong days for your powers of attraction. 2012 is a year of discovery and excitement, although you are likely to begin really feeling this forward-looking energy from June onwards. Now is the time to build your strength, sense of security, and confidence.

JUNE 22 - JULY 22

January can be a personally influential month for you, dear Capricorn. The year ahead brings strong opportunities for both work and play. A partner can have important revelations around the 9th - a time when something about yourself or your personal plans might also come to light. Professional and financial matters are especially strong from the 12-14th. There may be a need to rework projects around the home or legal matters in the last week of the month. However, it's better to rethink plans rather than push them ahead at this time.

LEO

The year 2012 is likely to open up doors for you in your work and with relationships, dear Sagittarius. You begin the year with strong financial ideas and plans. Good news comes your way from the 9-13th. Some backtracking in romance and career is likely to distract you somewhat in the last week of January, however. There can be some grudges to deal with. Avoid coming on too strong in your work environment. The month ends on a busy note, with plenty to do but much help from friends as well.

JULY 23 - AUG 22

Errands, paperwork, making connections, and reaching out are in high focus as the year begins for you, dear Scorpio. A close partnership can feel easy and secure, and romantic matters are strong from the 14th. A burst of confidence is with you from the 12th. Your powers of persuasion run high. Try to avoid scattering your energy, and you'll do well. Some confusion or stalling is likely, however, in your work or daily routines from the last week of January. There can also be some backtracking and revisiting old issues required in a friendship at this time.

VIRGO

NOV 22 - DEC 21 DEC 22 - JAN 19 JAN 20 - FEB 18

You begin the year with much going on with family and around the home, dear Libra. You're making new connections in January, but you are also reconnecting with people from your past. This trend continues into the next few months. Listen to your intuition about a creative project on the 12-14, when you can have good ideas about how to turn a profit. It's also a good period for romantic relations. In the last week of January, some revisions in a close partnership may need to be made. Energy levels are not at their best this month, so pay attention to your body's signals for more rest.

FEB 19 - MARCH 20

what’s your sign? You begin the year in fine form, dear Aries, with an attitude that says you're ready to take care of business. Emotionally, you're sufficiently detached to be able to handle your work, and yet friendly and sociable. Home and family demand your undivided attention around the Full Moon on the 9th. The 12-14th are exceptionally strong days for business and personal magnetism. From the 23rd forward, your social life tends to take precedence, and you may need to reassess some of your recent work projects and efforts.

Travel, if it can be managed, would be especially rewarding now, dear Taurus, as your hunger for adventure is strong. Nevertheless, emotionally, you're much more settled than you were in December. You begin 2012 with lucky Jupiter in your sign, and while you're no stranger to this energy that began last June, its forward motion this month can bring a stronger, more confident manner. Hiccups in a romantic relationship, with children, or with creative projects might be experienced in the last week of the month. It's time to do some backtracking and reassessment of how to better approach these matters.

You're in a planning and dreaming stage this month, dear Gemini. It's a time for reassessing your goals and formulating new ones. Midway through 2012, you'll be raring to go, but for now, life is more about getting in touch with where you are headed! Getting serious about your finances is necessary and valuable on the 1216th, when your instincts for what needs to be done are on the mark. You're especially able to magnetize positive things your way on a professional level. However, home life requires more of your attention this month.

Close relationships receive top billing this month, dear Cancer, and you are at your most accommodating and attentive. Strong focus is on your social life and a significant relationship. A personal revelation or relationship drama can occur around the 9th when the Moon is Full in your sign, and the outcome can be quite positive. Career efforts are strong, but by the last week of the month, you could be second-guessing some of the recent projects you've taken on. You begin 2012 feeling strengthened by your friendships and connections.

The year begins with strong energy and heightened intelligence for work, health, and fitness routines, dear Leo. It's a good time for organizing your home and your finances. Financial matters can become a little sticky starting in the last week of January, so it's a good idea to get on top of your budget before then. Love matters are excellent this month - you're in fine form for attracting or strengthening a relationship. Turning a hobby into a career is possible this month. In 2012, you continue to strengthen your professional reputation, and later, branch out by making strong connections.

You begin the new year feeling energetic and on top of your game, dear Virgo. Educational matters are strong, you're feeling supported, and domestic matters are hectic but running well. You're likely making all sorts of plans for personal projects, and you are especially attentive to your physical appearance and health. Motivation and enthusiasm may take a bit of a nosedive in the last week of January, however, when you could be questioning your recent choices and reassessing your goals. Try not to make new commitments until you are certain you have a handle on current ones. source: www.horoscopessign.com
