About the Cover: We love Ramadan, not only for all the great family time and amazing food, but also because it is a time to self-reflect. We searched long and hard for a visual that captured the soulfulness of the Holy Month, and as always, local photographer and creative Bader Al-Rajhi never fails to deliver even on the most elusive of feelings. We spoke to Bader about this picture, and he told us that he wasn’t actually at the location with the intent of photography. “During the winter season, I always keep my camera nearby in the car when I go for walks, you never know when you have the opportunity for the perfect photo opp. I noticed this man from a distance, and what attracted me towards taking this shot was his traditional garb and how the light danced beautifully to result in amazing lines and shadows. All of this, coupled with the man’s soulful and reflective glance toward the open sea and the horizon ahead led me to instantly grab my camera to take the shot. It was a scene that was perfectly set to be captured.

You know what’s always baffled me: the fact that the country is literally full of empty houses, apartments and offices (I’m sure you’ve all seen the huge ‘for rent’ signs all over the country), yet, the landlords refuse to lower the rents, even when the properties remain vacant for over a year or more. In my area alone, there are at least two dozen empty houses, but the companies that manage the properties have all decided that it makes better business sense to leave the properties empty than to lower the rent slightly. The same goes for commercial properties. So many empty shops in all the new malls, especially the so called ‘restaurant complexes’, yet nobody is willing to budge on rent. In some countries and cities, landlords who sit on empty houses and apartments have to pay quite a substantial tax every year, simply because they keep the property empty….maybe that’s something that could be considered here #JustSaying.
The bazaar team...
I think what irks me the most is stagnation. Personally, I prefer change, motion, and action. And this month’s issue is absolutely full of that. We interviewed movers and shakers who appreciate change. Find out how Imad Yassin and his siblings started the Idris Foundation which provides education and aid for refugees. Our Up Close and Personal feature is with Manifesto 13 founder Dalal Alnafisi, a studio with a philosophical edge to help show kids how the arts and social issues could meet. Not all change needs to be on the grand scale, Ahmed Taher, an electrical engineer who decided that socks need to be fun and exciting, is adding smiles to his customers’ days with Quirky Toes in Truth or Dare.

Fast cars are another way to get the adrenaline pumping in our veins and this issue is going to get your heart racing with the new Ferrari F8 Tributo which just landed in Kuwait. We also found out that the Porsche Taycan has finally entered the final stages of testing, and we literally cant wait to see that on the roads someday soon.

ON BEING BANAH
DALAL’S MANIFESTO
IDRIS FOUNDATION
DEAN & DELUCA
This Bahrain-based female vocalist has found her voice performing music that is neither Middle Eastern nor Western, but rather a beautiful fusion of both genres. The mother-of-two spoke to us about navigating her career while balancing her personal life as a parent and constantly striving for more.
This month’s Up Close And Personal is not one who is all talk and no walk. When she felt that children needed a better art and social education, she created the space to make this happen. Living up to her own manifesto through her studio and curriculums, Dalal Al Nafisi shows us how change is possible.
Imad Yassin’s father had a secret that was only discovered when he passed away. Idris Yassin was funding an orphanage in Sudan. Imad and his siblings decided that they were going to make sure that their father’s philanthropic legacy did not end. This is how the Idris Foundation started.
Ramadan is a time for spiritual awakenings but it is also the best month of the year for foodies. And we have it on good authority that this year DEAN & DELUCA is going to be your one-stop-destination for Iftars, Suhours, Ghabqas, gifting and so much more.

WORK YOUR QUIRK
Ahmad Taher will literally knock your socks off! By bazaar staff
Quirky Toes came into the scene back in 2017 as the first specialty socks brand in Kuwait and the GCC. Since its inception, the household name continues to grow in popularity with their ethos of creating quirky designs that are also functional. Electrical Engineer Ahmad Taher, the entrepreneur behind it all, shared with us the story on how the unique brand started and what’s next for Quirky Toes. Ahmad has always wanted to start his own fashion brand, and from the beginning, it was going to be focused on socks. “I wanted to develop something that would be different. Something that, basically, would get people to express themselves, and that’s where the idea for Quirky Toes came from,” says Ahmad.
26
[Continued...]
The ability to express yourself through a pair of socks is intriguing enough. One look at the designs and you’re bound to find one that represents your personality. Imagine, at the end of a long day, when it’s finally time to take off your shoes and lay down to relax, a glance at your pair of Quirky Toes will eventually draw a smile on your face; and that’s the ultimate goal, they are meant to bring out your inner child. Each and every collection at Quirky Toes has its own theme, but the most popular one in Kuwait is The Ballerina. The collection is an explosion of colors made out of cotton and sheer materials, with the cutest designs we’ve ever seen. Another interesting collection is The Bourgeois, Ahmad describes it best as the ‘no show’ socks. He also explains that The Bourgeois collection is “Focused a lot more on the technical part of the socks, they’re the only socks in Kuwait that never fall off your feet, literally. A lot of people face problems with no-show socks, taking a couple of steps and then it falls in. So, the collection
focuses a lot more on technicality and efficiency.” Quirky Toes is presenting promising materials, technical efficiency, amazing designs, and more importantly, comfort and the joy of simply being yourself. The brand, which fully embraces culture and the community is growing with multiple collections, and it’s going even further than just socks. “It started with socks and now very, very soon we’re going to start doing underwear,” says Ahmad. Ahmad started Quirky Toes completely on his own after his proposal was accepted and funded by Kuwait National Fund. His life was completely transformed from working as an Electrical Engineer, towards becoming an entrepreneur, even though technically what Ahmad is doing includes plenty of engineering to it. What’s life like as an entrepreneur? “It’s crazy, it’s stressful, it’s amazing, it’s a rollercoaster, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!” We asked Ahmad to participate in our humble game of truth or dare, and he courageously agreed! Read on to learn all about the man behind the quirky brand.

TRUTH OR DARE QUESTIONNAIRE How would your mother describe you in one word? Annoying, just kidding. I actually called her to ask and she said “My life” (Cheese). How would you describe your mother in one word? Ok, I tried, but I couldn’t find a way to describe her with only a single word. “My rock” would be the most fitting one to be honest. I owe her everything and nothing that I can say would suffice. What is the most ridiculous question you’ve ever been asked? When are you going to get married? (Usually by my mother) What is the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done? I picked up my passport and flew to Cairo to surprise my mother on her birthday. What is your theme song? I have a few actually, Thunderstruck by AC/DC, Calm Down by G-Eazy. And ehm… I want it that way, by the Backstreet Boys haha. What word in the English or Arabic language do you wish you had invented? Quirky. Where would you like to live? I have always planned to build my business in a way that would allow me to travel a lot while maintaining my base here in Kuwait, so there is no specific place that I would like to live in at the moment. What is your dream retirement location? Southern Spain or Northern Italy. I am really fascinated by the cultures of both countries especially these two regions. What is the first famous quote that comes to your mind? “Cerca Trova”, it’s Italian for “Seek and you shall find”. It is more of a personal mantra to me than a quote.
If you could change your name, to what would you change it? Rio haha. It used to be my nickname growing up and in college. I am used to it more than my actual name.
What in the world do you least desire? Seafood. I know, I know! I am literally the only one in my family from both sides that pretty much cannot tolerate it!
How would you describe your handshake, in one word? Fresh-Prince-y (Do you see what I did there? Haha), if someone knows me well they would know how to do the Fresh Prince- Jazzy Jeff handshake.
What do you think is lacking in the world, which [if there were more of it] would make the world a better place? The belief of giving back, be it one’s community or any of the many less fortunate ones around the world.
Which animal best describes your perfect partner, be it in business, or in life? A cat, but this is when it comes to my life, cats are independent and intelligent, and these are the traits that I would like in my future wife.
What is the toughest part of your character? My stubbornness. I hate it when someone tells me that I cannot do something that concerns my life, so I go on and do it, twice.
Do you miss anything from your childhood and if so, what is it? Many things, but mostly Ramadan, because it used to be totally different when I was young. It had a different taste both spiritually and fun-wise.
Who is your favorite historical figure? Henry Ford, I believe that he was a revolutionary who went against all the odds of his time and created something that changed the world as we know it, while raising the bar when it came to labour rights.
28
[...Continued]
Why do you think most people who do, like you? I really can’t find an answer to that, but I like people in general so I am guessing it must be karma of some sorts. Finish this sentence: “Happiness is…” Happiness is doing what you like to do while spreading joy in the process.

THE ENDURING KAFTAN
An ancient garment that never goes out of fashion By bazaar staff
Unless you have been living under a rock you must have noticed the tsunami of expos, shows and markets that have been trying to sell you this year’s most amazing dara'aa. You know the one, it will make you stand out at the family gathering, cement your place as the family fashionista and will make everyone die of envy. The phenomenon has been growing for years but the kaftan is much older. We are not fashion historians, even though we occasionally fall down that rabbit hole and pretend we are. The kaftan is a ubiquitous garment in the Middle East and all over the world. Call it a caftan, qoftan, Kuwaiti dara'aa, hooded Moroccan djellaba, Hawaiian muumuu, Egyptian galabeya, Russian sarafan, Senegalese boubou or just a dress. It is versatile. It can be laid-back enough for bumming on the beach or on-point for the wedding of the season. The loose fitting dress with no shaping at the waist, is comfortable, airy and can be flattering on almost every body type. There are so many ways it can be made unique too. From fabrics to trims, the cut might be similar, but the end result is stunningly different. We usually associate kaftans with Middle Eastern countries, but almost every civilization has something similar. The Koreans have their hanbok, which is comprised of a skirt and jacket but still creates the same visual effect and the Japanese have their kimono, that has a similar silhouette but is tied with a belt. On the subject of belts, the kaftan can be cinched at the waist too to make it more fitting. While many people attribute its rise in the rest of the modern world to Yves Saint Laurent, who was inspired by his stay in Marrakesh to bring them to the catwalk. It was actually Queen Alexandria, who appeared in a Russian kaftan and wowed the world. It was a move away from the tailored dresses of the time. Paul Poiret and his rejection of the form-fitting silhouette which led him to designing tunics and dresses that were easier to wear for the modern woman and much closer to the kaftan in design. Today, we have seen everyone wear them, from A-list celebs to moms picking up their children. And we love it! It is the easiest thing to wear in the world. They are the original yoga-pants of the Middle East. Just as liberating, your movement is never restricting but you can look way more put-together. For us, growing up in the Arab world it never went away but it has seen a recent revival in creativity. Our moms and grandmas always wore them in the house. Perfect for entertaining impromptu guests or even running a quick errand. And while they never really go away, Ramadan is when they really shine. The kaftan is forgiving in every way. Stuffed yourself with kanafe and machboos? The kaftan won’t judge you with a 30
tight waistband. And just because it is so basic, that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Designers have been experimenting with hemlines, different shoulders, and using interesting construction to create new lines every season. Local indie designers have been releasing their interpretations of this year’s dara'aas for weeks. It is definitely the season of the kaftan. This year, we are seeing more natural fibers like linens and cottons. Neutral and solid colors are plentiful too. It provides a blank canvas for bolder statement jewelry and are
more versatile. Touches of gold too add richness to the dresses. If muted tones are not your thing you can still find wonderful prints, stripes and bold colors. Never fear, there is always a kaftan for you.
Photos by bazaar studios from the Harvey Nichols Kuwait Kaftan exhibition, on until May 16th.

LIVE BY YOUR OWN MANIFESTO DALAL AL NAFISI AND THE JOURNEY TOWARD A MORE ARTFUL LIFE By bazaar staff
Dalal Al Nafisi is an interior architect by trade and education, but her upbringing amongst an art-loving family left a lasting influence that continues to shape her character to this very day. As a child, Dalal was immersed in the arts and art history because of her art-loving father who shared his passions with her. When she became a mother, she came to realize that much of the allocated time for the arts at her children’s school is being compressed to make more room for other academic subjects. Because of her own background, she understood how exposure to art could help shape young minds and hearts. Dalal believes in being the change, instead of waiting for the world to change for you. So she set out to create a studio where an art curriculum could be taught that would expose children to the rich world of history, creativity, and art as both a process and a result. Her vision was clear and simple, and she sat down to write a list of all of the things that were important to her. Once she was done, she recognized that her list was also her manifesto. When she found the perfect space, it was store number 13 in one of Hawalli’s older business complexes, thus Manifesto 13 was born. In the beginning, she found a non-profit organization that had already created a teaching plan that was inline with what she already had in mind. Over time, and stemming from her experience, she started developing her own curriculums. The classes are a jumping point for a larger, ongoing conversation. Instead of just teaching art techniques or painting, they start with art history. Understanding what happened in the past gives children a better perspective of the social and historical context that created sociocultural shifts, not only in the media being created but also the reasons behind it. And the kids are loving it! They are curious, they ask 32
more questions and keep coming back for more. The focus on the process, instead of the results, also helps them value hard work, discipline, and perseverance, all of which is then reflected in the rest of their lives as well. Manifesto 13 arrives as a welcome change of pace in a world that is becoming increasingly fast-paced and disconnected from reality. More importantly, Manifesto 13 is a place that helps children stay grounded. The Foundation class is on-going throughout the year, and introduces the students to the different schools of art and thought, but there are also visiting artists that offer a vast array of techniques and methods. There are also music classes, as Manifesto 13 is all about offering people different forms of selfexpression, regardless of the medium. For Dalal, It’s not about creating perfect pieces of art, the experience is more about being original and creating something that is meaningful to the artists themselves. In her opinion, one of the main barriers to art in the region is our obsession with perfection, instead of authenticity. Art does not need to be an exact representation of real-life, it can be anything you want it to be. The choice of the studio’s location to be present in Hawalli wasn’t an accident either. Dalal wants the children to see that there are different sides to life in Kuwait. And with Hawalli arriving as one of Kuwait’s oldest multicultural and economic hubs, Manifesto 13 provides a culturally immersive experience, as well as an artistic one. As a parent herself, she understands our need to shelter and protect our offspring from things we might not entirely be comfortable with. “I realized that most kids had no idea what was happening around the world. They have no awareness of current social issues that are happening, and it is really important, even for kids. And I think that it's really, really essential for them to understand things. It also gives them the ability to be grateful for what they have,” Dalal explained. The kids once saw a queue of women with suitcases at one of the domestic staff offices near the Manifesto 13 premises, and were curious. This prompted a discussion about rights, empathy, challenges faced
by other people, and the fruitful discussion shifted the entire class’s perspective. Dalal turns every experience into a teaching moment. They have a beautiful ongoing project called the Gratitude Tree. Manifesto 13 students are encouraged to write down three things they are grateful for on leaf shaped pieces of paper made out of recycled materials and hang them on the tree’s reclaimed wood branches to promote sustainable living. It is a constant reminder that everything is inter-connected, that we need to be thankful for what we have and not use more than what we need. While children are there to learn about art, they end up learning about life and gaining confidence, awareness and compassion. Art is the destination and the path at Manifesto 13.
UP CLOSE & PERSONAL QUESTIONNAIRE What do you most value about your friends? Honesty, kindness, support and free therapy sessions! Which living person do you most admire? My parents for being the most inspiring activists and humans who overflow with kindness and giving. They are also the most kicka** grandparents. They really are a force of this universe. I’m so lucky to have them. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Happiness comes from gratitude and being present and mindful of your blessings. It is achievable anywhere and at any time with those two components. I try every day to be conscious of my blessings, smile and laugh all the time. What is your greatest extravagance? Travel, I think! I’m not at all into possessions and I believe in non attachment so I don’t need much to be happy. However, travel is my one extravagance that I can’t resist. I love exploring places that take me out of my comfort zone. I love learning about different
cultures through that and expanding my knowledge on life and meaning. What is your most treasured possession? Memories. I don’t believe in possession or materialism. “Everything” has meaning, and meaning is more important than the “thing” itself. What is your greatest fear? I think any mom’s greatest fear is losing a child. I freak out all the time on the streets of Kuwait because of reckless driving. It is completely unacceptable to feel unsafe and if I had free time I would be protesting daily until someone makes a drastic change to our situation. What is your most marked characteristic? I can’t answer that about myself. Which talent would you most like to have? I wish I could play guitar and have a voice that’s slightly acceptable. What is one trait you have that you are most grateful for? Regardless of any hardships, I’m resilient and I just keep going. What is the human trait you most dislike about others? We are all flawed as humans but my biggest trigger and general green light to cut people off is if I see someone treating others (any living being) disrespectfully. Especially when the person/being is less powerful. What is it that you most dislike? Having to leave the house after my kids are tucked in bed. Which words or phrases do you most overuse? "The education system is archaic, and schools need to change." I also say, “Oh my God” and “Sorry” way too much. What are your favorite words to live by? Everything happens for a reason. Where would you most like to live? Anywhere in nature and also where life is simple. I can live in Thailand, Sri Lanka or India. If you could have any job, what would it be? I think I’m pretty much doing what I want to do! That’s pretty awesome! What would you consider your greatest achievement? I would say my kids, but I can’t take all the credit for that. So, when I see kids walking out of our studio with an understanding of art and social responsibility that is completely different from when they first started, it makes me just so happy that I managed to create a place that could do that!
What do you hope for the future? That Kuwait changes its education system, so we have better educated and conscious beings. In turn, that will breed tolerance and stop people from mistreating others based on race, religion or gender. I hope Kuwait makes it mandatory to recycle everywhere. I also hope
that parents who decide to have kids, actually spend time raising their kids with ethics and values. That is very rare today unfortunately. Want to know what classes are available right now? Follow Manifesto 13 on Instagram @manifesto13. 33
IDRIS FOUNDATION
A billionaire is someone who can impact a billion people’s lives positively By bazaar staff
Imad Yassin founder of Idris Foundation celebrating with the girls for scoring the highest grades in the region
When the Yassin siblings were organizing their father’s estate after his sudden and untimely death six years ago, they discovered that he was funding an orphanage in the refugee camps in Sudan. Imad, Suzie, Suha, Sahar and Jamal were taken by surprise when they found out about their late father’s philanthropic work. Curious, the family decided to visit the camps and learned that there were more than 300 thousand people living in the East of Sudan as refugees. Out of sadness, hope was born, as they decided to start the Idris Yassin Foundation in his name to carry on his work. The original orphanage is now home to more than 300 children, and since then, the foundation has established more than nine schools. We spoke to Imad Yassin who told us 34

more about the project. What kind of programs does the foundation run? We focus primarily on health and education, so far, we have nine schools that we provide books, uniforms, furniture for, and collaborate with Ethar Relief our partner to deliver water and food to these schools. Health-wise, we are collaborating in the building of a hospital in Shagarb Refugee camp. In addition to that, we have helped restore sight to over 281 refugees who needed cataract operations. During the out-break of Chikungunya last October we provided mosquito nets, medical support and sprayed large regions with repellents to stop the spread of the disease. You were recently in Kuwait screening a documentary about your activities. Why did you decide to make a film? I have an old passion for movie making, and I was speaking to one of our trustees, Mr. Ayman Fakoussa,
who said, "look, it is important for people to see progress" so I decided to take the footage from all of our trips in the last two years and make a documentary. So far, we are doing only private screenings, and have conducted screenings in Barcelona, Manama and Kuwait City. We will be showing it in Dubai, Beirut and London next. Your vision statement on the website mentions the use of technology and advances in education and health to help refugees. Could you explain what kind of technology you are using? We've managed to build the first digital class room in the camps, and our plan is to allow for volunteers who wish to teach to do so from the comfort of their own home and therefore create an abundance of resources. You don’t have to travel or take time off work to serve students. We also attempted to use drones for the delivery of medicines during the rainy season. It's hard to navigate the roads, but flying drones in high security

Big dreams coming true, this girl expressing her dream to become a Doctor when she grows up areas like refugee camps put this project on hold. Girls and women are always a huge part of the solution, how do you empower women and girls to help their communities? Absolutely, we believe very strongly in the empowerment of girls/women, we have not only built secondary schools and made dreams come true for girls wishing to go to university, but we also have many projects for women's empowerment by providing them with facilities, funding and equipment to create businesses so they can become independent. Girls score the highest grades in all of our schools. What kind of educational programs do you offer? Is it basic education or also vocational training so people can work? We have, as I explained, schools that were built from scratch like Future school, but we have supported existing schools to thrive Like Aydoon and Alnidal that have been barely surviving since the 1980s. We also realized how important it is to provide training for teachers, and we have been running regular programs to get the teachers to deliver the best education possible. This made a big difference in the schools ranking.

Are all of your employees unpaid volunteers? How do you manage that? All of us are volunteers in the Idris Foundation, which is amazing! It’s a global movement, we have people all the way from New York to Melbourne. Each comes with their own unique set of expertise. This helps us get as much of the funding delivered to the hands of those in need. We use all the latest technology to communicate and keep track of progress. We have annual reports that show progress of what we have been delivering and our partners send us regular updates on the work we do together. Are all of your projects in Sudan or do you also operate in other locations? Why Sudan specifically? Yes, we do, Sudan, Yemen, Djibouti and even in Lebanon with Syrian refugees. Our work mostly happened in Sudan to start with because my father originally is Eritrean, and there are more than 300,000 Eritrean refugees who are forgotten in these camps since the 80s. What has been the most challenging thing so far? What is the hardest thing when operating a charity organization?
The most challenging aspect is that you always have to start from the beginning. When we first started Idris Foundation we wanted to immediately build digital class rooms, but then we realized the kids were hungry, so we had to find charities that provide food like Ethar Relief and feed them. After that we had to make sure that they had a seat, table, uniforms and books before we can get to where we wanted. Operations-wise, the hardest challenge is always timing, because we want everything done yesterday and things do take time if you want to do them right. What part of the project are you most proud of? What is your favorite success story? Building the first secondary school for girls three years ago and having our first group of orphan refugee girls' dreams come true and enter university too. [Building] Future Secondary School, which you can see in the documentary, we are planning to build a second floor. How can people help the foundation? Do you accept volunteers or where can people send funds? How can people help if they can’t give money or volunteer? We have over 20 people working in Idris Foundation
Jumeirah
Kids in Idris Foundation funded school have uniforms, tables, chairs, meals and well trained teachers without monetary compensation. In addition to that, hundreds of friends and families continue to help globally. I am part of Singularity University in California and we believe a Billionaire is someone who can impact a Billion people’s lives positively. We have regular observation trips to the camps to where we take volunteers and supporters with us. We have had many from the Middle East and Europe visit. We collect money via Ethar Relief our partner and we authorize the spend per project. This way we can make sure all the funds are only used for the projects we believe in. You can even select which projects your funds go to, Health or Education. What would you like to tell people who think of helping others? I believe in the power of attraction and the need of all of us as humans to lead a purposeful life, since we started this project a tribe of amazing people started to form to make it happen. If you truly want to make a difference start today and you will see how quickly people will come to your aid.

SANAA JAMAN
How one woman found peace on the mat By bazaar staff
We often hear people complaining about all of the ills of social media, yet it was Instagram that inspired one young woman to start a yoga journey that propelled her toward a meaningful path in life. For one Dr. Sanaa Jaman, she was drawn to the Scorpion pose and was determined to master it. This isn’t a pose that beginners usually start with, as it’s an advanced and challenging asana, but Dr. Sanaa is not the kind of person who is deterred by challenges. She started a home practice and worked towards her goal. She promised herself that she would be able to get into the Scorpion by the end of that year and by ten months she could. The physical aspect of yoga is what got Sanaa interested, and even though she was not focusing on any of the mental or emotional facets of the practice, she felt a substantial improvement in her overall well-being. Over the months she had become calmer, more responsive than reactive and generally more at peace with herself and life. The realization prompted her to enroll in a teacher training class. Until that point Sanaa had never taken a class, all of what she had already learned she had taught herself by going online and educating herself. While on a lunch break from work, she passed by a yoga studio, wondered to herself if they offer the program. She walked in, felt at home in the space after meeting the owner, liked the curriculum and signed up. That is a running theme in Dr. Sanaa’s life. She just does things when they feel right for her, and she follows her heart. “You make time for the things you want to do” Dr. Sanaa said. She made time for yoga in her busy schedule, in between work, writing a PHD dissertation in Environmental Engineering and life. She also started documenting her yoga journey as @ladydork on Instagram. She shared her ups and downs with her followers and was always transparent about the bad before the good. As she was finishing her PHD, Dr. Sanaa began to feel that academia was becoming a toxic environment for her. The academics and science were not her biggest challenge, but the system was. She constantly needed to prove her worth as a scientist because she was a woman instead of being judged for the quality of her work. Pursuing yoga as a full-time career felt that it made more sense to her and her well-being. So she launched the #DorkTour and wrote her first ebook. At the time the tours were an alternative to becoming a visiting teacher to a studio and gave 40
her more control over how and where she could teach her students. The first tour sold out and Dr. Sanaa knew she was doing the right thing. By basing these tours on her personal journey, she created a relatable, safe, accessible environment for all attendees. Recently she has been focusing on meditation, healing and a more therapeutic approach, and Dr. Sanaa ensure that she remains very open about her progress with her almost 100K followers on Instagram. Just as she was inspired by other yogis on the platform, she is also helping other people find their way into the world of yoga. Once she was back in Kuwait she tried going to different yoga studio spaces, and didn’t find the sense of community she was looking for. During lunch with a friend one day, her friend suggested she open her own space. Dr. Sanaa had never entertained the possibility and brushed it off at first since she didn’t have the business experience. It was a serendipitous string of chance encounters with different people that made all the difference, however. It began with her meeting the people at Cubical Services, a firm that helps entrepreneurs with their startups. Two years later, Tru3 Yoga was born. It is more than just a space where people can practice yoga in a class, it is a safe space where people can come and be their truest self. “As yoga teachers our job is to guide you to be your best self,” Dr. Sanaa explained. “The real work on yourself starts when you leave the mat,” she continued. Living in the present takes practice and work. It is especially important for woman in the region, according to Dr. Sanaa we are not taught to express emotions in a manner that is healthy. Instead we are conditioned to suppress them and keep going. Yoga helps release all of these pentup feelings and offers a better way of dealing with anything you are going through. Dr. Sanaa is on a mission to help as many people as she can to find their own way to their own inner peace and more balanced lives, whether by taking them on #DorkTours, retreats around the world or inviting them to Tru3 Yoga.We don’t know about you, but we are definitely ready to step onto the mat with her soon.

ELEVATE YOUR STYLE WITH SIMA
Local designer Sima’s artful kaftans will take you through Ramadan and beyond By bazaar staff Sima designer Sumaiya Alsharhan wears The Kaftan
What first began as a fun project with a sewing machine to create a versatile garment that takes you from the gym to your next gathering with friends and family, quickly evolved into a burgeoning lifestyle brand. Created by local designer Sumaiya Alsharhan, Sima is made in Kuwait, works with a local network of craftsmen, and sources local fabrics for each and every design that is made. When it came to sharing her passion project with the rest of the world, Sumaiya looked to her skills as a designer first. She said, “I wanted my designs to be both beautiful and functional. I’m constantly inspired by my visits to the local fabric Souk, so using local materials 42

came as a natural decision to me. It made sense to take advantage of the beautiful supplies that we have right here in Kuwait, and helping out the local fabric shops keep their trade alive. Some people get overly excited when they visit a fancy designer shop like Chanel or Louis Vuitton, and I get the same buzz when I’m fabric hunting at the local shops.” From working the local circuit of expos and bazaars, to taking orders via Instagram, Sima’s brick and mortar store is located in the basement floor of 8 mall in Salmiya’s Salem Al Mubarak street. Currently, Sumaiya produces a very limited run for each style that she designs, but boasts a wide collection of the famous Large Cardigan (The LC), open kaftans, and the garment that inspired Sumaiya’s design journey, the convertible, unisex poncho. So if you see something you like, we advise you to get it quickly. We asked Sumaiya about how the idea for the
convertible poncho came about, she smilingly told us of her love affair with the outdoors. “I previously worked as a guide in Oman, leading people on various outdoorsy adventures, from cave explorations to hikes up Jebel Shams. I needed a garment that would keep me warm at night, yet at the same time, I could efficiently store away, or use as a blanket, a pillow if needed. And it needed to look good!” From there, she set to work, experimenting with her sewing machine and fine-tuning the garment that became the convertible, hooded, poncho. Since the poncho’s design is unisex, Sumaiya wasn’t surprised at all when she was soon approached by fellow male campers who were seeking the same sense of style and versatility when it came to their outdoors lifestyle. You can wear it in three different ways, and, as with every garment by Sima, is stored in its accompanying pouch that is made out of the same fabric.
Chilli beans
www.Chillibeansarabia.com
When it comes to all of Sima’s garments, you can choose from lighter fabrics, hooded or unhooded poncho styles, or even custom embroidery. The design options are endless, but the end result is always the same—a garment that is stunningly unique, effortless, versatile and functional. Translating from Arabic as “elevated”, Sima means just that, an elevated piece of clothing for a completey elevated look. This Ramadan, we’ve got our eyes on Sima’s selection of LC's (large cardigans) and open kaftans. With fabrics including jersey cottons, Omani silk (a small selection of fabrics that she procured while on her last outdoorsy exploration in Oman), crochet knits in solid and metallic colors, soft and airy linens, oh-so-trendy golden 90s chain prints and whimsical chiffons—these pieces will instantly uplift your basic jeans and t-shirt combo. We all know that by the end of the first week of Ramadan, you would have already gone through your basic rotation of dara’aas, and let’s face it, getting dressed becomes such a chore. With Sima, you can don an open kaftan or the Large Cardigan over a basic black dress, and just like that, you’ve just scored yourself a faultless Ramadan look. With versatility at the core of Sima’s ethos, you could then easily transition these pieces into your summer wardrobe. Wear a breezy, silk kaftan to the office with your workwear attire, then use it as a gorgeous swimsuit coverup when it’s time for that afternoon dip by the pool. If you’re changing up your look entirely for dinner with friends right after, then simply stow away your kaftan in its matching, silk pouch. And this, for us, is what made falling in love with Sima so easy; it’s about making wardrobe choices that empower your personal style, not suppress it. We also love Sima’s cotton unisex ponchos for travel, as you can choose from a slightly thicker fabric to wear during those long flights and airport transits when the temperatures can get quite cold as well, it's better than airline blankets! Once you’ve arrived at your destination, keep it as a versatile piece to add to your outfit! Speaking of summer, we’re even more excited about Sima’s next product drop. Sumaiya has created a poncho similar to her basic range, but fashioned out of the softest, terrycloth towel material. “I initially started working on this design with divers and beach goers in mind. A female customer who also happens to be a diver first inspired me to experiment with the idea, as she was seeking a quick coverup after her dives that would look cool with a wetsuit, yet still was functional at the same time.” The summer towel poncho is designed to be as wide as a large towel, works as a beach throw, and can be used as a bag as well. We asked Sumaiya’s advice on how to choose the right garment from her selection of styles. She immediately points out that the process will differ from each person’s style to the next, but she always noticed that her customers are first drawn to the feel of the fabrics that she uses in her designs. “What doesn’t work for me, might work for another person, but getting a feel for the fabric is essentially what first attracts a person to a specific large cardigan, kaftan, or poncho. I absolutely love seeing my customers form a bond with my pieces through this process. It’s very interesting to observe, and it’s rewarding at the same time.” For more information, check out @Sima.kw on Instagram, Whatsapp 9990 3155 for details and visit the Sima shop in 8 Mall in Salmiya's Salem Al Mubarak Street. 44

SPARK
Leaping off tall buildings for fun By Reem Al Gharabally
Spark, the 21-year old Lebanese parkour athlete who grew up in Kuwait gained notoriety in 2017 after vlogging about climbing the tallest building in Kuwait, Al Hamra. He had already climbed it three times. Like the invisible man, he has a knack at getting past security. He vlogged his third attempt on social media, it went viral and made him famous.
The first thing I learned about Spark, who has 200k followers on his YouTube channel where he documents his parkour adventures, is that he has a wicked sense of humor. I was trying to find a venue to interview him. “I’m fine anywhere but if the meeting would be on a rooftop or a crane that would be recommended,” he said. Because this journalist is afraid of heights, we met on the corniche of the Scientific Center on a stormy April evening. Despite his bold escapades and online bravado in real life Spark is very polite and considerate. He is very philosophical about the misconceptions about Parkour. “Parkour is about getting from Point A to Point B,” Spark says. Traceurs or free runners, as parkour athletes are called, negotiate obstacles by running, jumping, and climbing. Parkour was developed in France by Raymond Belle and developed further by his son David and his group of friends who called themselves Yamakasi in the 1980s. Through films, documentaries and advertisements the discipline was popularized in the late 1990s and 2000s. But when Spark was introduced to Parkour as a school kid in Lebanon, he had never heard of it. “My classmate told me about this sport, people jumping on roofs and stuff [similar to that] and I was like what is that? What’s the benefit of that,” he said. He continued, “My friend said let’s go and try and I said no I won’t do this.” It was when he moved to Kuwait at the age of 16 in 2014 that he was re-united with a childhood friend who was practising Parkour that he started free running. “The next day we went to Marina beach and we started to do flips. And since that day I have been doing Parkour,” Spark says. Although Spark was always monkeying around as a child, he had no gymnastics background and had never done a flip before that day on Marina beach. “I went from zero to hero. I got three basic flips in one day – front, back and side flip. All landed clean,” he says. “We didn’t have gyms. We didn’t have someone to train us. Sometimes I used to skip school and come to the beach and train.” “Kuwait is a massive urban jungle and a paradise for urban climbing,” he says in his docu-series The Edge. He has climbed every iconic tower in Kuwait

and believes that it is a misconception that parkour is a dangerous sport. “I don’t take that leap of faith that people think I do,” he says. “When you see me jumping from one building to another it is because I have trained on the ground for it. I calculate how many steps is in a jump. I am ready for it.” Spark explores the buildings first before he does the stunts you see on his video. He checks the ledges, he checks the structure. If he feels it is unsafe he leaves the building alone. So why does he do it? “I love adventure. I like hiking. And I found the same feeling exploring buildings,” he says. “It’s all about living out of the box, about not living normal.” And he says there are real benefits: “You become physically and mentally stronger. You become more self-confident every time.” Fear, he says was only an issue in the very beginning. “The very first time I had shaky legs. But it was a really good feeling,” he says. I asked him about the issue of trespassing – that parkour which involves jumping on buildings is seen as a borderline criminal activity. Spark himself was arrested twice – once for climbing the highest crane in Kuwait. “The law is something someone wrote. But the law does not understand your intention for climbing stuff. For me it is just a wall of concrete. It’s that simple. I am not breaking into a family's dinner in their house. So why would you put me in jail for just climbing this thing.” He also feels that the idea the sport is just for young men is misplaced. “Parkour is something in us that we have from when we are young. When we grow up, we stop doing it,” he says. I ask him what would he say to a 50 or 60- year old man or woman who wanted to start parkour. “That’s great,” he said.” You can start from basics. Parkour is about enjoyment; it is not about competition unlike other sports. This is why I like it. Football is about competing. Who is the best? But in Parkour it is different. You do it for pleasure.” He points out there are female athletes in the USA, Egypt and Lebanon and he is happy to train women. He is currently back in Kuwait visiting his family and is deeply saddened about the demolition of the Sawaber complex. “Every free runner who started here in Kuwait all went to train there first. And any guest who came to Kuwait we took them to train over there,” he says. “I left a lot of good memories there. The demolishing of Sawaber is like cutting trees for monkeys.” On his Instagram he describes himself as a homeless free runner living on rooftops. So where does he go from here? “My goal for now is getting sponsorship,” he says. If an opportunity came up to open a parkour gym in Kuwait, he would consider moving back. After graduating from school, Spark left Kuwait. He felt vindicated on exiting the country when he was approached by an airport police officer who asked if he was the guy who climbed all the tall buildings. When Spark confirmed it was him the police officer asked him what he was going to do now. “I said I was going to go and do my stuff in other countries. The police officer smiled and said good luck.” Want to see more gravity defying stunts? Follow Spark on instagram @pk_spark or his YouTube channel Pk spark.

ON BEING BANAH
East meets West with this artist’s creative musical stylings By bazaar staff
Banah is a singer and a music artist based in Bahrain. Her passion for oriental, classical, and modern music styles ever since she was young led her to become an independent singer with hundreds of thousands views on her social media channels. Juggling the life of being a mother of two, a radio host, and a singer, she powerfully demonstrates the successes and challenges of being a female artist from the Middle East.
50
At 33-years-old, Banah has already achieved so much. She holds a degree in Business Administration, previously owned a marketing agency, was once a banker and a personal trainer, and is currently working as a radio presenter. She truly has done it all, while still journeying towards becoming an amazing independent singer. All of these achievements were not handed to Banah on a golden platter, as she had to work hard to reach the level of success she is experiencing today. What makes Banah’s music and live performances unique is the fact that she sings in both Arabic and English. As she says herself, “I’ve always had both of these influences in my life.” ِSince Banah’s childhood, she listened to legends like Um Kulthum, Abdel Halim Hafez, and her personal favorite, Fairouz. But, at the same time, she also listened to Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, and so many more prominent Western artists. As an independent singer, Banah started her musical journey with mashups that showcased her ability to sing in both Arabic and English. Her first mashup effortlessly combined a Nancy Sinatra song with a Fairouz track, “It was a fusion and I thought that was the best way to show the best of both worlds, to have the English and Arabic, because I love both equally. These mashups are great, they give good exposure and good publicity,” says Banah. Instead of simply adding unique fusions, Banah has already released four original singles, and they are all in Arabic. Even though the singles are in Arabic, Banah continues to join both Eastern and Western musical influences in her live performances and concerts. If you ever catch the artist at a concert, you’ll witness her performing with Arabic music followed by an English one throughout the entirety of the show. Banah focuses on this point because this is the format of a live performance that she is trying to create. As she states, “I believe today there are no artists doing this, you will go to a concert that is strictly Arabic or strictly English.” Every artist comes alive during a live performance, and that is not the only reason why artists are in love with stage performances. When performing or recording in a studio, there are certain techniques to follow, and a certain mindset. Meanwhile, when an artist is on stage, the food to their soulful songs is the audience, and Banah never got over that feeling. As she says, “It’s so nice to be able to sing something and move someone, and immediately see that reaction. it’s so different when you see it live, it’s very inspiring.” With the four singles Banah has released, each discusses an important subject. That is usually the case when it comes to Arabic music, it’s all about the lyrics and the storyline. “Shou Helou Nihna” is the title of Banah’s first single, and is about an independent woman who is in love but also already feels complete, and not because she is with someone who completes her. She sings about a sense of inner completion, a rare feeling in and of itself, “I like to sing about things that have substance,” says Banah. An educated mind, with a soul full of passionate music and expression, Banah has come across challenges

throughout her journey. Performing music within the GCC can still be seen as taboo, and that alone carries its own hardships, specifically when it comes to a female artist. Pursuing her dreams while being a mother of two daughters as well as a wife to a supportive husband is a tricky path to balance and navigate. “I think motherhood is the biggest thing I ever did, and I think doing music and motherhood made me a happier mom, and when you’re a happier mom you’re a better mom. So they are definitely very much linked,” says Banah. Come to think of it, who wouldn’t want to be such an inspiring role model for their family? Banah can hardly

explain the joy within her once she comes up on TV or the radio while she’s with her family, they are all happily touched by her success The Middle Eastern music scene clearly signifies that there is a hunger for real, authentic music, and for an unheard sound. That is what Banah is presenting to her audiences all over the region—originality at its best, with a fusion between two completely different continents. The fact is, Banah is a female independent artist who has invested the time, money, overcame challenges and raised a family towards, eventually, becoming her own boss, and making her own decisions today.
Banah’s dream performance is one that every Middle Eastern artist should aspire to, and it is “to be able to perform worldwide, to be able to perform in an opera house in Europe doing Arabic music, brining those old classics back with a twist.” and we, personally, can’t wait for that day to arrive!

THE HUAWEI P30
Decoding the new super features of the Supercamera Phone By bazaar staff
When the HUAWEI P30 Pro was unveiled it immediately and deservedly was named the Supercamera Phone. There was a time when phones were for making calls and sending texts, today we want a device that not only can take great shots but is also easy to use and make us look great while we are doing it. The company has gone above and beyond with this model and packed it with all of their latest and greatest innovations. Here’s what the new super powered phone can do. Huawei knows that this generation of Snapchatters want good photos before they filter them, so they have optimized the Huawei P30 series camera for Snapchat. The revolutionary Leica Quad Camera Setup definitely helps. This includes a 40MP main camera with the HUAWEI SuperSpectrum Sensor which brings in more light so taking pictures or shooting videos in the dark is not a challenge, a 20MP Ultra-Wide angle lens for both horizontal and vertical shooting, an 8MP telephoto SuperZoom lens and a 32MP front camera for shooting selfies with unparalleled quality. The camera setup also includes the HUAWEI Time of Flight camera that is designed to measure depth of field for beautiful portrait shots with blurred backgrounds and sharp foregrounds. Huawei’s engineering marvels have come up with a way to embed a massive zoom lens into the ever-so thin body of the HUAWEI P30 Pro. This SuperZoom lens lets users enjoy a 5x optical zoom, 10x hybrid zoom and an unprecedented 50x digital zoom that can bring even the farthest objects up close. Most phones take really bad photos once the sun has set and everything becomes a big fuzzy blur. Night photography on smartphones has always been a challenge due to hardware and software limitations. This will no longer be a challenge on the HUAWEI P30 Pro thanks to the Night Mode, which stabilizes pictures with the help of AI Image Stabilization and Optical Image Stabilization. Photos and videos taken at night will be sharp and crisp. Speaking of video, sometimes a single recording is just not enough. With the HUAWEI P30 Pro, this is not a problem anymore, thanks to HUAWEI DualView Video1 technology, which splits the screen in two and allows users to record a wide-angle shot and a close-up shot at the same time. Super creative videos are in your future. The HUAWEI P30 Pro is powered by the Kirin 980 chipset, Huawei’s most powerful smartphone chipset yet and one of the world’s first commercial 7nm chipsets. The Kirin 980 can quickly adapt to AI scenes and can recognize faces and object, detect 54
image segmentation and can intelligently translate. So, whether it's dancing to a fast song or quickly running in front of the camera, the Kirin 980 can focus on the joints and lines of the human body in real time. The In-Screen Fingerprint is new and improved. It is now 35% more accurate and the phone can unlock 30% faster. Which means you can access your phone fast and easy, every time. The user experience is further improved with the fluid unlock animation and hover sensing. All of these features are amazing, but if your phone is dead then they become useless. Huawei worked towards developing the battery on the HUAWEI P30 Pro with users who are out and about
all day and can’t sit around and wait for a phone to charge. The 4,200 mAh battery gives users up to an entire day of intensive use and is complemented by the 40W Huawei SuperCharge which will give users approximately 70 percent in just 30 minutes. The phone supports 15W Wireless Charging, and a unique Wireless Reverse Charge feature, allowing users to place their friend’s phones or other devices including earphones and wearables on the HUAWEI P30 Pro to instantly start charging it, provided it supports the Qi wireless charging standard. Sharing is caring. For more information follow Huawei on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube @huwaweimobilekw.

NOOR QADDOUMI
Meet the 13-year-old who is standing up to bullying with music By Nejoud Al-Yagout
Noor Qaddoumi, at the age of thirteen, decided to turn an experience of being bullied into an opportunity to speak out on behalf of victims of bullying and to encourage others not to suffer in silence. She wrote an original song titled “Don’t Hide Out” accompanied by the ukelele, exhibiting her musical prowess along with a passion for singing. Now at fourteen years of age, Noor has become an inspirational figure at her school and within the community of her peers. Here, she discusses the song and how she turned a negative experience into a positive one. Noor, in your song, you encourage people not to hide bullying from others. Why do you think so many of your peers are afraid to report cases of bullying? In my opinion, it’s either because they feel they are a target and the bully will retaliate against them, or they don’t want to be recognized as a victim. In “Don’t Hide It”, a victim is described as “stuck on an island, hiding... away.” Is there a reason why victims isolate themselves from others? I guess they don’t want to confront their feelings while talking about the incident in front of others. They feel safe alone. Do you find that using creativity to express ourselves can heal a bit of our trauma? Sure. It doesn’t only heal the trauma, but it also helps to solve the problem in a positive way. Have many others approached you about their bullying after you released the song? Yes, a lot of people have approached me to tell me about their own experiences and stories and how my song helped them to express their feelings. They have supported and encouraged me to continue on that track. Besides that, I have found that the media is very interested in highlighting this issue, not only locally but also internationally. I have been approached by media outlets to discuss this matter. Finally, many students do not feel comfortable telling their parents or teachers when they are being bullied. What is the reason for this? And as a young adult, what advice would you give to adults regarding how to react or respond to a child or teenager who is being bullied without making the victim regret his/her decision— as is oft the case? I guess the reason is that victims of bullying feel ashamed because they think it is their fault that they are being bullied. They’re also scared of the consequences. And, in my opinion, an adult’s responsibility is to educate their kids, talk to them, assure them that they are always there to support them because they care for and love them. You can watch “Don’t Hide Out” on Youtube. For more on Nejoud Al Yagout, check out @coexistkuwait on Instagram.

EMBRACEYOURFEELS Discover the collaboration between Monki and Mental Health Europe By bazaar staff
Monki is a brand that has embraced all forms of social matters and represents these causes in stunning fashion wear. From adopting issues like feminism, to their most recent and second collaboration with Mental Health Europe. To this very day, mental health is a subject that is not always taken into consideration or is thought of as 'taboo', when in fact, it should be fully embraced, and the space for discussion needs to be carved out to build a constructive dialogue. Mental health is important at every stage of a person’s life, from childhood to adulthood. Mental Health Europe is a non-governmental organization that functions as a networking group within Europe. The organization is also committed to promoting positive health. Mental Healthy Europe works closely with different groups to help end the stigma that surrounds mental health. The first collaboration between Monki and Mental Health Europe was titled ‘All the feels’. It was essentially an exploration of social media, and
72
its potential, plus the multiple effects it may have on young people’s mental health nowadays. The Swedish brand continues to encourage people to take this particular conversation further by exploring the topic, and its impact on daily life. Managing Director of Monki, Jennie Dahlin Hansson says “Empowering young women is at the core of everything we do at Monki. We are very proud to continue our collaboration with Mental Health Europe, and hope to encourage our community to express themselves and their feelings without fear.” ‘Embrace your feels’ comes in as the second collaboration, and Monki truly took the campaign to new heights. They've created three amazing and hugely inspiring short films which revolve around different emotions, from feelings of happiness, sadness, to simply feeling everything all at once. The aim of these three short films is to display and reiterate that all of these feelings are well-founded, and completely valid. The campaign aims to evolve the discussion on mental health awareness, and Monki is accompanying that by releasing four limited edition t-shirts. Each and every t-shirt has a message to deliver a statement, whether you are the wearer or the viewer. Two different prints come in with the collaboration statement, which is ‘Embrace your feels.’
The other two t-shirts also feature a longer manifesto that supports self-care, and offers tips at the same time, “Maybe you’re sad, maybe you’re happy. Maybe you’re feeling nothing or everything, all at once. Either way, always try to be gentle with yourself. Whatever you’re feeling is OK. What’s normal anyway? Normal is a boring word. We’re lonely, we cry. We laugh, we love. Being human is complex. Embrace it all.” The campaign and collaboration shed light on an important subject that requires our immediate attention. ‘Embrace your feels’ is more than just a line on a t-shirt, it’s a message that is meant to be accepted by everyone who is experiencing mental health hardships on a daily basis, worn by those who are simply willing to showcase their support, and informing to start a conversation. Respect!

THE FERRARI F8 TRIBUTO’S KUWAIT DEBUT A dazzling display of power and performance from the Prancing Horse Stable By bazaar staff
Stormy skies, incredible lightning, and powerful rains don’t even compare to the mighty grumble of the Ferrari F8 Tributo. If you think this sentence is pure hyperbole, then you should have joined us at the unveiling of the new Ferrari F8 Tributo in Kuwait. A magnificent machine that pays homage to the most powerful V8 in Ferrari History, we were dazzled by its strength at the launch event hosted by Al Zayani, the sole authorised dealer of Ferrari in Kuwait.
74
The torrential weather might seem like a recurring theme, but attendees were magnetized by the spectacles showcased at the exclusive Prancing Horse festival held at the new Kuwait Motor Town (KMT), the latest exciting automotive destination in the region. This beautiful new Ferrari is currently touring the GCC market to allow loyal Ferrarista to see the model in their home markets. The F8 Tributo is the new mid-rear-engine sports car that represents the highest expression of the Prancing Horse’s classic two-seater berlinetta. It is a car with unique characteristics and, as its name implies, is a homage to the most powerful V8 in Ferrari history. The new model was revealed to an exclusive selection of VIP clients during an evening presentation hosted by Mohammed Dawleh, General Manager at Al Zayani and Giorgio Turri, General Manager, Ferrari Middle East. This emotionally charged moment concluded a day of exhilarating Ferrari action that commenced with a triumphant parade through the streets of Kuwait to KMT, and a special appearance of the Monza SP1. The high-octane schedule also featured a display of automotive excellence, in the form of a Ferrari Challenge show, in which Tani Hanna, regional champion took part. The showcase of track activities produced a thrilling symphony of roaring engines throughout the afternoon, testing the handling of the new 488 Challenge vehicle to its limits.
Nail Al Zayani, Owner, Al Zayani commented, “This was an incredible moment for the Ferrari community in Kuwait. The reveal of the Ferrari F8 Tributo acted as a fitting conclusion to two days packed full of exciting Ferrari activities for our valued clientele. We were proud to hold our event for the first time at Kuwait Motor Town, a destination that is perfectly poised to hold a special place in the hearts of Ferrarista here in Kuwait.” Giorgio Turri, General Manager, Ferrari Middle East added, “Today’s event underlined the power and the prestige of the Ferrari lifestyle here in Kuwait. We are proud to showcase some of our most beautiful models together with the Ferrari Challenge at one of the world’s latest state-ofthe-art racing tracks. The F8 Tributo is the most powerful V8 engine to date, carrying forward our legacy of delivering world-class design and unbeatable excitement to our loyal fans. I would like to thank Al Zayani for their passionate support of the brand in Kuwait.” Mohammed Dawleh, General Manager, Al Zayani concluded: “The launch of the F8 Tributo was very well received by Ferrari enthusiasts here in Kuwait and we expect it to be very popular among our discerning clientele. The F8 Tributo pushes further the boundaries of automotive excellence, delivering on the ethos of Ferrari that was set by its founder Enzo Ferrari when he said the best Ferrari is always the next one.” The F8 Tributo sets the market benchmark for performance, driving pleasure and ease of
handling. It makes the exhilarating performance of the best 8-cylinder in the world accessible to all drivers, with unprecedented handling and superior ride comfort. The F8 Tributo replaces the 488 GTB and, in the range, is the model with the highest performance matched by the greatest driver involvement. There are significant improvements across the board aimed at providing even better control on the limit along with greater on-board comfort. In the automotive world, Ferrari’s V8 engine is seen as the very epitome of sportiness and driving pleasure. This is particularly the case when it is mid-rear-mounted in a two-seater. Ferrari has been honing the scope of abilities of this architecture, which creates an optimal weight balance, and thus delivers unparalleled thrillingly sporty driving, to perfection for over four decades. Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the F8 Tributo is essentially a bridge to a new design language that will continue to emphasise Ferrari’s key characteristics of high performance and extreme aerodynamic efficiency. In fact, the F8 Tributo is the most aerodynamically efficient series-production mid-rear-engined berlinetta ever designed. The F8 Tributo features state-of-the-art aerodynamics, integrating innovations and expertise developed thanks to the company’s involvement in the GT and Challenge championships. The solutions have been honed to create a series-production mid-rear-engined berlinetta with the highest level of performance available. It was only through close synergy with the Ferrari Styling Centre that the strict aerodynamic constraints could be so flawlessly interpreted and integrated into the car’s design. A good example is the S-Duct at the front and the redesigned blown spoiler system at the rear which are underscored by the car’s clean yet decisive lines. The cockpit retains the classic, driveroriented look typical of Ferrari’s mid-rearengine berlinettas. Every element of the dash, door panels and tunnel has been completely redesigned specifically for the car. The F8 Tributo also boasts a new generation steering wheel and steering wheel-mounted controls as well as new styling on the standard seats. Overall performance levels are significantly higher than those of the 488 GTB, thanks to the increase in power, weight reduction and improved aerodynamic coefficient. That performance is also now accessible to a larger number of drivers thanks to vehicle dynamics systems that make driving on the limit an easier and more confidence-inspiring experience. The Ferrari F8 Tributo is expected to be on the roads later this year and is available only through Al Zayani, the sole authorized dealership of Ferrari in Kuwait. [Continued...]

KOSMÉ PARIS AT TALISE SPA
Discover the beauty of natural luxury at Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa By bazaar staff
As soon as you’ve arrived at Talise Spa at the idyllic Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa, you instantly know that the scene is set for an absolutely relaxing and indulgent experience. There’s nothing that’s not to love about Talise Spa. It’s the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday stressors and slow down to discover beauty practices that are as old as time. Natural, and completely luxurious at the same time—this is what you will experience once you’ve tried one of Talise’s exquisite treatments using Kosmé Paris’s products. Exclusively stocked at Talise Spa, Kosmé Paris has found its perfect home in Kuwait. You can either luxuriate in an incredible massage experience using any of the ethical beauty range’s body oils, or recreate the same Spa experience within the comfort of your own home by purchasing any of the products before you leave the spa. It seems that the concept of ethical, slow beauty is a trend that is taking flight. After all, we all want to consume products that not only work, but also make us feel good about ourselves when we come to use them. We like knowing that we’ve helped a family living in a far away and exotic destination by purchasing one of their products. But long before the trend, there has been avid entrepreneurs who constantly wanted to elevate the standard of the beauty industry, without compromising on their brand’s ethical standards. An early adopter of ethical beauty is Kosmé Paris founder Sophie Allouche, who has been passionate about this ever since her earlier days working in the cosmetics industry, specializing in sourcing organic raw materials for her department. She realized that true bounty and beauty can be found in nature, and more importantly, how many companies take the term ‘organic’ for granted. She writes on the official Kosmé Paris website, “organic botanical oils were not used and not concentrated enough in the products to provide real benefits.” As a result, she decided to create her own cosmetic brand that employed the best botanical oils from all over the world. For Sophie, Kosmé Paris was founded out of a desire to bridge together the notion of luxury with natural beauty. Perhaps what we love the most about Kosmé Paris is the brand’s commitment and enduring respect for the environment. Not only does the high-end brand of skin and body care products utilize the power of the natural assets of the plant world and its enriching textures, Kosmé Paris also works with a wide network of small artisanal botanists and producers from all over the world. Rather than go after mainstream producers, Kosmé will focus on the small Moroccan family extracting Argan oil using traditional, environmentally friendly practices that are considered outdated when compared to the practices of modern agriculture. “Whenever classic, handmade practices are automated, we frequently see 78

a negative impact on either the environment, or on the actual artisans working so hard to naturally source a precious ingredient in the safest way possible,” says visiting practitioner and Kosmé Paris representative Cecile, “this is why we prefer to source ingredients that are derived from organic agricultural practices whenever and wherever possible.” The result? A modern, research-based approach to beauty which yields a skin and body care range that respects the skin’s natural balance. Kosmé Paris’s products to not contain any petrochemical additives or harmful minerals, and they are also preservative, silicone, and paraben free. You can find a variety of Kosmé Paris product lines at Talise Spa at Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa. From their legendary anti-aging serum prepared with prickly pear seed oil that is cultivated on the plateaus of Morocco, rose germanium essential oil and acai berry oil, aromatic and sumptuous Babassu body butter that’s filled with amazing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties sourced west of the Amazon, to aromatic green tea body oil harvested in Southwest China. Jojoba oil facial cleansers make for the most natural, and effective way to rid your face of all the dirt and grime of the day, while also nourishing and moisturizing your skin, while the rosewater infused toner is just the relaxing touch you need to wind down after a long, hard day. We were even more excited to learn about the oriental Oud range by Kosmé Paris that is exclusive to the Middle East region and you can find it only at Talise Spa. Don’t forget to try out a luxurious spa journey at the Spa using this range in particular! Indulge in a massage with the fragrant and relaxing body oil and go home with the Oud-infused bath oil, your skin will be left feeling nourished, refreshed, and aromatic long after your spa session is concluded. Kosmé Paris at Talise Spa arrives as the perfect beauty partnership. Because at Talise Spa, you’re in for a complete pampering experience that nourishes your mind, body and soul, just as Kosmé aims to deliver with its complete range of ethical, botanical beauty range. When you combine the both together in a series of expertly designed spa treatments, the result is truly magical. The Talise Spa is a journey of inner and outer wellbeing, complete with 17 treatment rooms, two couples suites and a diverse mix of treatments that are inspired by esoteric beauty practices from around the world. The trained therapists focus on relaxing all the senses during any treatment you choose. They start with calming music and a candle-lit room. A bowl of eucalyptus and jasmine flowers is placed on the floor under the massage headrest. The calming ambience will relax you entirely, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the experience to follow.

PORSCHE TAYCAN ON THE WAY
Final stages of testing the new Porsche Taycan have begun By bazaar staff
82
The Taycan is Porsche’s first purely electrically driven sports car. But before the series production starts the final test drives need to happen. Taking a car from a simulation to being road-ready is a long but satisfying journey that Porsche take very seriously. In Scandinavia, just a few kilometres away from the Arctic Circle, it is proving its potential in terms of driving dynamics on snow and ice. At the same time, Porsche engineers are taking advantage of the summer in the Southern Hemisphere. In South Africa, performance tests are underway, as well as final adjustments in terms of continuous performance and reproducibility. In the hot climate of Dubai endurance runs and testing battery charging under extreme conditions are happening. The 30 countries across the globe in which these comprehensive tests are being carried out have temperatures that range from minus 35 to plus 50 degree Celsius, air humidity range from 20 to 100 percent and altitude ranges from 85 metres below to 3,000 metres above sea level. Approximately six million collective kilometres, of which two million were endurance run kilometres were covered by the cars being tested. And most importantly the over 100,000 battery charging cycles took place using various technologies to make sure that everything will run smoothly. It is a huge undertaking that required a team of around 1,000 test drivers, technicians and engineers. “After carrying out computer simulations and comprehensive bench tests early on, we have now reached the final phase of this demanding testing programme,” underlines the Vice President of the model line, Stefan Weckbach: “Before the Taycan is launched on the market at the end of the year, we will have covered approximately six million kilometres across the globe. We are already very happy with the current status of the vehicles. The Taycan is going to be a true Porsche.” All cars at Porsche undergo the same rigorous testing program regardless of whether their engine is a combustion or electrical one. In addition to displaying superior performance, this always includes proving unrestricted suitability for everyday use in all climate conditions. Particularly demanding features such as charging the battery or temperature control of the drive train and the interior under extreme conditions are additional aspects in the battery-powered models. Test experts were able to build upon the comprehensive findings from the digital testing stage using digital prototypes. At present, computers are used to design the body, drive, chassis, electronics and overall vehicle of a new model and to simulate their functions – which includes how they work together. In total, the virtual prototypes of the Taycan have completed more than ten million digital kilometres. This meant that development engineers started driving a Taycan around the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a driving simulator at an early stage, so that they
could test and evaluate its circuit performance. During this process, they focused on the electrical energy management, which plays an important role in achieving a sub-eight-minute lap time on the 20.6-kilometre (timed distance) Nordschleife. The Porsche Taycan will be introduced in September and will be launched by the end of the year. Across the globe, there are already more than 20,000 serious prospective buyers. The potential customers have put their names down on an option program list and made a down payment. The Taycan accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in significantly less than 3.5 seconds. It has a
range of more than 500 kilometres (according to the NEDC). The 800-V archi- tecture in the vehicle guarantees that the lithium-ion battery can be recharged in just four minutes, providing enough energy to drive 100 kilometres (according to NEDC).

SAY HELLO TO IL GUFO
Italy’s favorite children-driven brand opens in Kuwait
By bazaar staff
Up until the not-too distant past, children were dressed as miniature adults or as display pieces that families would proudly parade. Today, children’s clothing brands and parents have been moving towards styles and fabrics that allow children to move and express themselves in a way that is true to their age and personality. The family-run Italian company Il Gufo has been in the forefront of that movement since the 80s. The brand just opened their first store in Kuwait and we spoke to Alessandra Chiavelli, CEO of Il Gufo to find out more. The brand was founded in 1980 by your mother, Giovanna Miletti, what was it like growing up part of a family run business? As a child, my mother used to remind me about the talent of being “properly” dressed for each different occasion, sporty or formal, and this kind of education has taught me how to be a woman, a mother and a businesswoman today. I love clothing, I love nice fabrics, but most of all I love to see how an outfit can express a woman’s personality, how femininity comes from the smallest detail, or a natural gesture. It is something totally inherited from my mother; the passion for beautiful garments, for harmonious color combinations, fine shapes, silent ways to express ourselves without shouting, through delicate tones. Therefore, for me, growing up part of a family run business has been quite simple and I naturally became more and more involved in the company as I was growing up. It has been 40 years since Il Gufo was founded, does it still feel like the same brand? Or do you think it has evolved and changed? If so, how? My mother started sewing bibs and bed sheets when my brother and I went to kindergarten. It was just a small hobby which soon turned into a real job when some of the most important boutiques in the area asked to buy her items. She transformed the portico of our family house into a lab, using a ping pong table to cut. In a couple of years, she started working on a real kids-wear collection. When my brother and I were old enough to be independent, she found a bigger space and established Il Gufo’s first real headquarter. By the end of the 1980's, in Italy Il Gufo had already become a brand known and appreciated for its 84
Alessandra Chiavelli
quality and simple, yet sophisticated style. The brand was introduced to the international market in the Pitti fair in 1994. Looking back it is no wonder that change is a word we are all very familiar with. And yet it still feels like the same brand today as we keep sharing the values which were transmitted to all our people and we stay true to our roots, in our small village north-east of Italy lost in the nature where it all started, Asolo. Why did you decide to enter the market in Kuwait? What are the most important characteristics of l Gufo designs that make them perfect for Kuwait and the Middle East? We are very satisfied with the performance of our boutique in Dubai and more in general with how the Middle East is responding to our collections. In a few years we have built a loyal customer base both from the area and internationally. The turnover is growing and the brand awareness keeps consolidating. As a natural consequence,
the visibility of the Dubai boutique within the region helped unlocking this new opening in Kuwait City. Your slogan is "Children dressed as Children", what does that mean to you? What does it mean to you as a mother yourself? What is more important to your brand, how the clothes look or how they move and feel for the kids? When I joined the company, one of my first missions was to find a payoff that clearly speaks about our concept. “Children dressed as children” is the real manifesto of Il Gufo brand and we apply it in everything we do. Design, comfort and superior quality are the strengths of the brand’s collections, where adult fashion trends are toned down for the world of children ensuring their comfort, well-being and, most importantly, respecting their identity.
The Il Gufo store is located in the Avenues - 2nd Avenue, follow them on Instagram @ilgufo_official.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH SOPHIE TURNER Becoming Jean Grey on the X-Men films has never been more powerful By bazaar staff
In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face one of their gravest and most personal challenges to date. It’s the 1990s, and even as the team attempts to embrace a newfound heroic status and acceptance within society, their close bond is about to be shattered when Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) merges with a strange, extraterrestrial force, one that boosts her already strong abilities to previously unknown levels. Years of repression are torn asunder as Jean begins to find herself and master her new powers, even as those around her start to wonder if she’ll be a threat to the world, and a mysterious alien with an agenda (Jessica Chastain) exerts an influence. Sophie Turner is best known for her role as Sansa Stark on TV sensation Game of Thrones. She first joined the X-Men cast for 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, but in Dark Phoenix, she’ll truly come into her own as Jean Grey’s powers explode to the point of danger. Turner talks about digging into the psychological side of her character, working with Jessica Chastain, and how she hates having to keep secrets about all her work. Did you have any inkling that this level of character change and evolution was coming? Had Simon [Kinberg] dropped any idea that there might be a Dark Phoenix in your future? No, not really. When I went into Apocalypse, I just thought it was going to be an ensemble piece the whole way through. It was only once we started wrapping up that film that I heard whispers from the hair and makeup people who’d heard the next one’s about Jean. But I didn’t really know until about six months before we started shooting and Simon sat me down and discussed what this was going to be. From that meeting, up until we started shooting, we were just working, working, working on it. It was very exciting. This is an incredibly dramatic role to play, and a great one. Were you nervous about taking on this much in just your second go-around playing Jean? Yeah. I was quite nervous. I mean, in Apocalypse I didn’t really have a crazy amount to work with. I had a little bit of the character. And so, I wasn’t prepared when Simon told me. But I read the script and it was a delicious five-course meal for an actor. I thought, ‘oh my God, this is incredible.’ It just meant a lot of preparation, and a lot of hard work, but Simon was the perfect partner in crime to go along with that. He was the most collaborative, supportive director ever. And it was his first time directing, so we were both cheering each other on from the sidelines, which was very cool.
86
[Continued...]
And he chose a huge movie to make as his first film, didn’t he? It’s so natural to him. He completely belongs in the directing world. Obviously, his writing and producing past has really helped him know how to work around actors and how to work around the crew. He’s a genuinely interested, passionate, enthusiastic director. And a very smart one. We’ve spoken about it many times, but I said, “Simon, you have to direct for the rest of your life. You’re incredible.” It might be the first superhero film – and maybe even the first of any film – in a long time where the antagonist and from a certain point of view, the protagonist, are both women. Does it feel that way to you? Yeah, absolutely. All the female characters in this movie are the strongest characters. We have a female
protagonist, a female antagonist, all while the female protagonist is also somewhat of an antagonist. And it’s all about her relationships, Jean’s relationship with the females throughout this movie, which is really very interesting. None of the women in this movie are subservient to a man, which is incredible. It’s crazy to think that this is kind of the first X-Men movie led by women. That’s really exciting to me and especially to Jessica. And it comes at exactly the right time as well. How was it getting the gang back together this time? It seems the cast do have fun when you’re all together. When Alex [Shipp], Tye [Sheridan], Kodi [Smit-McPhee] and I came in on Apocalypse, I think they were all kind of worn out. Then we came back for this one and we were like, “let’s do this!” It’s like a really fun cast. We’re all such good friends and we spend every
jumeriah
evening together. It’s just such a family, down to the producers, the director… everyone is just so in love with each other. How were the costumes this time? You get to wear the ‘90s yellow outfits, so did you all walk out and just start laughing at each other? Kind of! It was also cool though because it’s the iconic comic book costumes, so it was fun to see all of us together in those costumes because so often the comic books are so far from what the movies are. Another big part of it is the effects work you must do. Is it fun? It is, though it can be quite embarrassing. There are moments I feel like such an idiot doing it. I mean, a lot of the time there were moments where I was holding a tennis ball. For minutes. But it’s also quite challenging and fun because you really need to push your imagination with it. There’s a bit that you see in the trailer where there’s a helicopter and I’m turning it. And that wasn’t greenscreen. I got to do that, and the helicopter really crashed down on the ground. And that was like the coolest thing! That was when I really felt like a superhero. But the rest of the time I just feel like an idiot. (laughs) Was it enjoyable to embrace Jean’s dark side, or was it emotionally and physically draining when you have to be so intense about it? It started out to be quite draining, but when I started to approach the character a little differently, I realized that this kind of dark side of Jean is a release for her. She almost goes into a meditative state; it just feels so good. And that switched it around, where the dark side was the calmest part of all of it for me because it needed to come out of Jean. The hardest part was just playing Jean herself and not Phoenix. Is it also fun to for you to sort of start the kickass version of your character? Even if it could destroy everyone. It was very fun. But I guess I’m just attracted to kickass female characters. It’s nice to play empowering women. That’s all I currently look for in scripts – strong, powerful women. But I think that’s what every female actress is looking for in scripts right now. And what effect does Jean’s metamorphosis have on the rest of the team? It’s like a family breaking down. Someone might compare what Jean is going through to battling mental illness or addiction. And her family must deal with that. Jean’s and Scott’s relationship must survive it. MAD ABOUT MARRAKESH H&M Home brings the magic of Morocco to you By bazaar staff
We love the comforts of modern urban living, but the beauty of the desert calls us. And with the longer, brighter, and warmer days ahead to enjoy the sun we are ready to embrace the art of outdoor living, inside. The new Summer collection from H&M Home with its blend of bright colors and vibrant prints can transform a room into a magical dwelling. The sandy tones and natural materials mirror the textures and landscapes of Morocco’s diverse scenery. 104

The iconic terraced pools can be seen in the colorful palette of garden greens, swimming pool blues and pops of pink, yellow and orange. The neutral tones such as sand, white and black are representatives of the desert camps. It is obvious that the design team took inspiration and re-interpreted to create such a put-together collection. Palm trees and exotic birds prints are key this season and create a very summery setting together with decorative objects with the shape of shells or leaves. Brass and colored glass continue to be important and create an interesting mix together with natural materials such as rattan, jute, straw and linen. “The Moroccan landscape and the architecture of Marrakesh, with the natural tones of the desert and the colors of the city, were big sources of inspiration for our summer styles. Two major style directions dominate
– one is bursting with energy with bright colors, vibrant prints and sophisticated details while the other is more subtle and casual with sandy tones, natural materials and black details,” says Evelina Kravaev Söderberg, Head of Design and Creative at H&M HOME. Bring Casablanca to your Casa with a quick makeover can be the best way to start the season. It doesn’t have to be complicated either. Fortunately, you don’t have to travel to the faraway cities of Morocco for a new rug, duvet cover or a throw that will make you want to snuggle in bed and dream of vacations in Fes. Fill the beautiful shell-shaped brass flowerpot with bright flowers to invite the scents of summer into any room. For desert-night vibes place the brass lantern and a fake oil lamp in the corner to soften the lights and create intriguing shadows. Layer different fabrics and linens to

FLAUNT IT AT YOUR NEXT EVENT
Monki just dropped an occasion wear edit, and we’re in love! By bazaar staff
Scandinavian fashion brand Monki is celebrating the spring/summer season with a gorgeous occasion wear collection. Meant for every event, and all kinds of celebrations, choose from extravagant pieces that can be worn for weddings, graduations, party nights, or a night out with your favorite girls. From romantic florals to a bold snakeskin print, you’ll have plenty of options to choose from. Florals It’s tough to read florals and prevent our mind from immediately thinking of Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, “Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking.” As much as this line is totally overused, we still cannot get enough of florals this season! It’s plain and simple, they are romantic, fun, colorful, super light, and make for a lovely, statement look at the end of the day. The floral inspired pieces from Monki’s collection come in the form of dresses, blouses, and skirts. The best color which always goes hand-in-hand with this particular print is white, especially since Monki’s florals come in shades of light pink, with hints of purple and yellow. Mix and match a floral skirt with a white blouse, or go for either a mid-length, offshoulder dress or a shorter cut for an occasion that requires looking more fabulous during those warmer days. Don’t forget to add accessories to your look, too. Monki is giving us beach vibes with the must-have golden shell earrings and shelly bag. Both items beautifully go hand in hand with florals! Suit & Tie We are obsessing over Monki’s white double-breasted suit! You might think a white suit is only meant for a business outfit, but we can totally visualize it for a stylish evening out too. You’ll have the flexibility to match the white suit with a glamorous top and heels, or just a white blazer with floral-inspired pieces, such as a skirt or a dress, and excessive but also playful accessories. To switch from nude colors that we saw in last month’s edit to absolutely bright and brilliant colors in this occasion wear collection is a clever move by Monki, and we completely fell in love with the bright and unique pink plaid suit. If you’re all about spring cheer and festive freshness, then this specific suit will inspire several looks for you. Add a hint of glamour with Monki’s beautiful pearl hairclips and hairpins to complete the look. Snakeskin Season When it comes to the snakeskin print, there’s no denying that it’s a wild card for your inner wild heart. A snakeskin print represents a bold character with a strong attitude, it’s also a major 90’s throwback, which is always a fun look! The pieces in this collection come in a playful snakeskin print ruffle skirt, and a shirred crop top with short puffed sleeves. Both pieces work perfectly and can be matched with the white suit to add boldness and elegance in one outfit. Opt for a 90’s look with the snakeskin dress, micro frame retro sunglasses, pearl or golden hoops, with chic sandals and you’re good to go for a party, a night out, or just feeling the fun vibes around you! Monki’s spring occasion wear collection demonstrates several stylish looks. Be it vibrant and fresh, elegant and chic, or a simple throwback but with a hint of boldness.

RED BULL PAPER WINGS Let the paper airplane races begin! By bazaar staff
Remember the days when the most exciting activity that occurred during a lovely outing was, basically, a DIY paper airplane? Imagine the same activity, but on a way bigger scale! Red Bull Paper Wings is the world’s largest paper plane competition. The idea is plain and simple, but ingenious at the same time. Students are challenged to make the classic paper airplane, fly as far, as long, as creatively, and as artistically through the air as possible! Two local finalists, Mohamed Abdelkarim and Mustafa Hasan, are headed to Hangar-7 for Red Bull Paper Wings World Final. The world’s largest paper plane competition has just concluded its latest two final rounds. In front of hundreds of spectators and rival participants, Mohamed Abdelkarim and Mustafa Hasan successfully clinched the win, and are soon headed to the Red Bull Paper Wings World Final in Austria. We were ecstatic to learn that some of the world’s best student pilots actually hailed from Kuwait, and they took on their rivals for the chance of winning a spot in the Red Bull Paper Wings World Final. Set to take place this month in the beautiful country of Austria, this year’s final is set to feature tens of thousands of self-trained student pilots who will be displaying their outstanding creative skills. Between 64 qualifiers across the globe, the test to enter the world’s leading paper plane contest will be a day to look forward to. The Kuwait qualifiers took place last month at 360 Mall, impressing participants and spectators alike. To take part in the competition, students had to make a single piece of paper fly as far and as long, plus as artistically as possible through the air. Seems simple enough, right? But crafting the perfect paper airplane— one that looks creatively inspired, plus engineered to fly for as long as possible, is no easy feat! This is why we were so proud to learn that the Kuwait winners competing in the categories of longest distance and longest airtime have been invited to the World Final in Austria. The judging criteria certainly differs based on each category. The winner of the longest distance category is, you guessed it, the plane that flies the longest distance between lift-off and the landing point. Although, the winner of the longest airtime is the plane that manages to stay in the air the longest, counted to the tenth of the second. Mustafa Hasan flew his amazing paper plane for 9.22 seconds, while Mohamed Abdelkarim achieved an astonishing distance of 19.3 meters. The Kuwait finalists will descend onto Salzburg Hangar-7 for the World Final. Each pilot will be armed with a single A4 sheet of paper, ready to impress fans and judges across the three distinct categories. What they come up with next is surely going to be amazing. 136
The global winners for distance, airtime, aerobatics and best ranked player of the augmented reality game will receive the prize of a Red Bull Air Race Weekend Experience. The prize includes flight tickets, accommodation, a full pass to watch the training and race over the weekend, access to the sky lounge (depending on the race), tour and meet-and-greet with one of the pilots of the Red Bull Air Race. For more information on the World of Red Bull, visit redbull.com.

INTERNATIONAL OPTIQUE PRESENTS YUNIKU Customize your eyewear experience with complete precision today! By bazaar staff
International Optique has introduced a brand new device at their flagship store in Salmiya which allows customers to tailor their preferred eyewear using the latest 3D technology. Yuniku, which originally means Unique in Japanese, is the newest technology introduced within the eyewear industry, as well as in Kuwait. The device essentially revolutionizes the prescription lenses process from start to finish. We all know that selecting the right pair of eye glasses can be a daunting experience. But at International Optique, the process is always smooth and worry-free,
138
as you know you’re getting the best experience possible with an absolutely professional team. When it comes to customizing your eyewear experience with Yuniku, however, you’re in for a real treat. The starting point of the Yuniku process begins with the lenses. Once the lenses are properly fitted, the frame will be built and adjusted around them, as well as your facial features. Normally, for prescription glasses, you begin by first choosing a frame, then going through a detailed eye test, and after these steps a specialist will come in to fit the lenses on the frames. Since that process may result in small alteration limitations, with Yuniku, all of these limitations will be avoided. The device specifically highlights the fit of the lenses on your face with Yuniku’s 3D technology; once you step
in front of the device, it will take a 3D image of yourself. The high-tech software by HOYA calculates several complicated algorithms of all the sizes that the lenses are available in. Once Yuniku takes its complete and required measurements, the positioning of the lenses will be even more precise due to this specific technique. The lenses, which are also manufactured by HOYA, allow the submission of the desired fitting parameters. The incredible staff at International Optique will even be a little more precise, they will make sure that they have everything in position. For example, checking how far away the bridge and the nose is when compared to the ears, that’s how the machine itself measures the length of the temples. It can also measure the bridge size that will eventually be taken into consideration when choosing
a frame. This machine is super intelligent, it’s quite amazing! With regards to the frames, they are created with advanced 3D technology, as they are actually 3D printed! The software itself gives you various frame options, from colors to the cut. Once you see Yuniku’s frames that are on display at International Optique, you’ll instantly notice how light they are. Lighter than titanium when compared, the material is polyamide powder, which is interestingly also used for other medical purposes. In a non-optimal fitting position, conventional frames could possibly compromise the wearer’s vision, and that would lead to an uncomfortable eyewear experience. Yuniku’s software fixes this problem by showcasing your optical center and adding a suitable fit for the lenses to completely dismantle any form of discomfort within your vision. It measures the eyepoint, the angle of the frame, and it will accordingly recalculate your prescription for more comfortable eyesight. Yuniku provides solutions for various obstacles within the eyewear industry. It makes sure that, whichever angle you choose to look through, when considering your everyday experience of wearing eye glasses, will be comfortable and fitted. No more strange peripheral vision, and that’s because the device fully considers prescriptions, functional requirements, former wearing experiences, ergonomics, and lens position, where all of these factors will not be pre-determined by the frame. That’s the extra special treatment that you would receive from Yuniku, when compared to wearing other normal glasses. The device itself is even more medically based, ultimately producing an eyewear piece that revolves around your particular vision, or in other words, your lenses. All of this is offered with an ultra modern look that can only be done by Yuniku. Three different entities and industry experts have collaborated to make this form of precision accessible to the everyday customer. Materialize, who are the experts in 3D printing, Hoet Design Studio, who design the 3D printed frames, and finally, HOYA, who are the spectacle lens experts, and the software designers behind Yuniku. All of this technology is combined within one, unique machine. This only proves how precise and detailed Yuniku is, it uses the newest form of technology presented in the Middle East and around the world. Plus, it demonstrates all the beneficial aspects in providing the customer with the ultimate maximum vision, and a comfortable eyewear experience rather than simply focusing on aesthetical viewpoints. Yuniku doesn’t stop just there, the companies involved will continue to provide more innovative surprises. Be it software updates, new frames, colors, or lenses, Yuniku will always be upgraded to serve you better. If you’re looking or seeking accuracy, precision, and attention to detail, Yuniku is the answer, and it is only available at International Optique in Kuwait. Yuniku is now available at International Optique. For more information on the new device, follow @intoptique on instagram, or check out their website www.intoptic.com.

JUST GO AHEAD AND DANCE If you can hear the beat, march to it
By Dr Susannah Joy Schuilenberg
“I think the reward for conformity is that everyone likes you, except yourself.” —Rita Mae Brown One of the reasons good therapists (note how I’ve sneakily included myself in the ‘good therapist’ category) are effective is that we simply notice when, what the client says is not congruent with what we see. A really common one involves the person in front of me saying, ‘Yes,’ with their words, but whose head is moving back-and -forth saying ‘No.’ Unless I point this out, the client is unaware of the give-away. Gamblers call these expressions or unconscious movements ‘tells’, and successful gamblers win as much with great hands as they do by ‘reading’ their opponents. Think about this for a moment—if the values I choose for myself run counter to the dominant culture in which I live, I am going to experience emotional and psychological discomfort. I’m going to say ‘Yes’ with my mouth and ‘No’ with my head and heart. It’s inevitable. I’m much less likely to experience internal dissonance, however, if I know how my values clash with my culture, I recognize the criticism, judgment, and condemnation for what it is, and I am able to separate my sense of self from the finger-wagging expectation that I conform. A good example is the movie Billy Elliot (2000). In a mining town in the north of England, a young boy develops a love for dance while watching a girls’ ballet class at the local boxing gym. Eventually, Billy ditches the boxing, which he’s not good at and doesn’t like, to secretly attend the ballet classes. This love of dance and the arts in general, brings Billy into direct conflict with his father, a miner from a family of miners and boxers. Despite the fierce and abusive opposition of his father and older brother, Billy persists, and eventually auditions for the Royal Ballet in London. The entire movie clearly demonstrates the internal battle Billy experiences because his sense of 'Self' and what he values causes major conflict in his family and runs contrary to the culture of his birth. All Billy wanted to do was dance—nothing illegal or immoral about that. And there’s the rub. Most often what we want to do is neither
140
illegal nor immoral, it’s just different. If I haven’t ever figured out for myself how the framework of my values is different or contrary to the culture of my birth or more importantly, the culture of my Family of Origin, I’m going to experience emotional and psychological discomfort and there will be an internal pressure on my sense of 'Self' that is difficult to bear. I will conform in order to avoid this discomfort and in the process become someone I don’t like much. In other words, we hive off or kill the part of ourselves that doesn’t conform. The consequences to mental and emotional wellbeing are often terrible. “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” —Steve Jobs So…what’s the answer? 1. Know yourself – take the time to identify the internal framework of values, interests, and dreams that is YOU. Try stuff. Food, adventures, cultures, activities, new things. Figure out why something bothers you and why something invigorates you. Do a value clarification exercise. Do a strengths’ finders exercise. Learn who you are as an individual; a unique soul navigating this thing called “Life.” 2. Divorce yourself from public opinion – once you know yourself, recognize where you and the dominant cultural norms part company and decide to be okay with that. When there’s
criticism, judgment, or finger-wagging, take a deep breath and remind yourself that such behaviour isn’t about you and says way more about the other than it does about you. This takes practice but really learning not to personalize the behaviour of others will free you from the tyranny of conformity. 3. Set positive goals for yourself – go towards the good, not away from the bad. When we focus on the negative, we often end up falling into a black hole. We’re so emotionally and psychologically engaged with not becoming something (or someone) that we don’t actually accomplish anything for ourselves. There is no reward for conformity – for subsuming your unique and glorious Self to the expectations of others. Take courage in hand and stand in the truth of you. What is your ‘dancing?’ Do you know? “Find out who you are and do it on purpose.” —Dolly Parton

HEMMAFEST IS BACK
Give your home the Ramadan and Eid makeover it deserves By bazaar staff
Many of us grew up in homes where we had a fine set of china that only came out when we had guests. As a child, I always wondered why we couldn’t just use the fancy dishes and silverware all year round. But as an adult, I now understand that sometimes the fact that some objects are tied with special occasions just makes them even more special. Which is why we are excited that IKEA’s HEMMAFEST is back in stores. The collection features contrasting blues and reds in geometric Islamic motifs and organic florals. It was inspired by one of the most revered months and celebrated holiday in the world; Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr. You can now have your own “special” flatware at affordable, everyday prices, and it’s so pretty that you might end up deciding to keep it in use all year round. The Holy Month of Ramadan revolves around food, family and gatherings as much as it is a celebration of various spiritual and religious elements. Families and friends gather around their tables every day at Iftar to break their fasts together or to fill up for the next day at suhoor. And of course, lounging around after the food-induced comas hit. Jennifer Idrizi, the collection’s UKbased designer said “The HEMMAFEST collection has a flowery theme with two main traits – one is geometric, and the other is organic. I was inspired by Arabic art where floral patterns have always been prominent. All parts fit together so you can combine your favorites as you like. Perfect when you want to create a fresh and vibrant feeling when it's time to set the table for a party. Enjoy your meal!” The HEMMAFEST collection is made up of tableware and home textiles that go perfectly together and will transform your home into a festive haven for Ramadan and Eid. And of course, they can work all year round giving your space a little Arabic style. Because of the subtle yet iconic oriental design aesthetics, every cup, plate, tray or cushion works just as fine for all kinds of gatherings, all year round. It looks coherent instead of looking like it only belongs in a themed party.
142
Mix the Prints Using a single print for all of your dishes, placemats and napkins looks dated really quickly. Mixing and matching is the best way to keep your entire collection looking fresh and new every time you have guests over. For example, you can use different prints for the same sized plate or between the different sizes. Either way keeps it looking exciting. Corner Trays Trays are always an overlooked part of any spread. The HEMMAFEST collection includes several sizes of laser-cut metal trays and a hand-carved wooden tray. Fill them with dates, sweets and coffee so that your guests can help themselves to whatever they need. Make sure that they are visible and easy to access too. bazaar tip: A tray with useful items like toothpicks, hand sanitizer or heartburn relief medication that people always wish they had but might feel awkward about asking for is a great way for making everyone feel welcome. Combine Textiles with Dinnerware Using the different elements and pieces from the collection will help make your space look coherent and intentionally designed. You don’t have to use the same print for the curtains, cushions, placemats and dishes, on the contrary, use different ones so that everything looks in-tune but without being overwhelming. Use the Cushions for Seating The more the merrier, is the official Arab slogan for life and even more so for gatherings that involve food. It is normal for hosts to invite more people than they actually have seating space for, but none of us ever mind. Just pull a couple of cushions and lounge in any empty space. The beautiful and differently shaped cushions from the collection will make for comfortable sitting. Stock up on some floor cushions and bolsters so that your guests can make themselves at home. Mixing the round with the square ones will add to the visual interest too. Whether you are socializing, dining or celebrating, HEMMAFEST will make your home festive-ready in an instant for the entire year.
The HEMMAFEST Collection is available in the store now, but it is a limited collection, so get it while stocks last. IKEA is located in the Avenues, Al Rai. For more information visit the IKEA Kuwait website, and follow them on Instagram @ikeakuwait to stay up to date.

DISCOVER FRESH FLAVORS AT THE CHEESECAKE FACTORY A kitchen sneak peek and a brand new menu! By bazaar staff
The Cheesecake Factory has always been known for their wholesome, generous portions when it comes to all of their delicious offerings that are featured on their expansive menu. Most recently, we had the lovely experience of trying out their new menu items, and we can safely say that it was divine. The menu includes several internationallyinspired culinary creations, from Mexican to Thai dishes. Plus, their latest cheesecake collaboration is shaping up to be one of their best cheesecakes yet! Before we dive into The Cheesecake Factory’s new menu, we first managed to get a sneak peek into their kitchen at Sidra Restaurants, Mahboula. We saw, firsthand, how every item on the menu is prepared from scratch. We learned that behind every great, flavorful dish at The Cheesecake Factory, is an amazing team that’s making sure every dish is going to be freshly served. Our experience at the kitchen opened our eyes to the real effort, which we don’t typically see. From organization, to complete dedication, all of this made us look forward even more to what was going to be served. With over 250 dishes available on the menu, we have witnessed how every dish is delivered in both a satisfying quantity and excellent quality from the dedicated staff to their customers. Now, let’s dive into the new menu items! First, we were presented with small plates of Chicken Taquitos and Cheeseburger Spring Rolls, which are new additions to the Small Plates & Snacks section. The Chicken Taquitos were crunchy, as this dish includes crispy corn tortillas filled with grilled chicken, green Chile, corn, onion, cilantro, and cheese. The taquitos are also served with avocado cream and salsa Verde to truly savor those Mexican flavors that we all love. The Cheeseburger Spring Rolls also deliver a crunchy texture, as they are rolled in a crispy, golden wrapper. But what’s within the roll is even yummier and what counts even more, ground certified Angus beef, lots of melted cheese and grilled onions. The new menu also features one appetizer that is truly unmissable, which is the Beef Belly Sliders dish. As small as these sliders are, the flavor will leave you reaching for more than one, once you taste the slices of slow roasted smoked beef belly with barbeque sauce, coleslaw and fried pickles. We also had the opportunity to try the Chicken Mango and Avocado Salad, which comes in a typical Cheesecake Factory portion. This is never a bad thing though, as this salad is filled to the brim with fresh, rich ingredients that will satisfy every craving.
144
The new menu also offers a Stuffed Cheddar Burger, which includes both cheddar and American cheeses, and we were ready for that cheese coma to kick in as soon as we had finished devouring this burger! If you’re a fan of burgers and sliders, then you’ll have the option of choosing either the Beef Belly Sliders, a Stuffed Cheddar Burger, or both. When it came to sampling the menus specialties, however, we noticed that these dishes have one thing in common, which is that they are both served with white rice. First we tried the Thai Coconut-Lime Chicken, which consists of tender pieces of chicken, snow peas, shiitake mushrooms, all mixed with the flavorful coconut curry sauce. The other dish was the Crispy Pineapple Chicken and Shrimp that is served with a sweet and sour sauce. Our verdict? Both dishes are perfect for lunch and dinner orders, whether you prefer the creaminess of the curry or the tanginess of the pineapple. Now that we have introduced the new menu items, are you ready to be introduced to the coolest
cheesecake collaboration? We are! It’s the Cinnabon Cinnamon Swirl Cheesecake, and if the name itself is not already making you drool, then you’re missing out on one of life’s greatest creations. The cheesecake comes in beautiful layers of Cinnabon cinnamon cheesecake and vanilla crunch cake topped with cream cheese frosting and caramel. Whether it’s the Cinnabon Cheesecake that’ll end up taking you to your nearest Cheesecake Factory location or the awesome newly introduced menu, you can be assured that you’ll always find something satisfying to have (or become addicted to) at The Cheesecake Factory, and that’s a guarantee from team bazaar. The Cheesecake Factory is located at Grand Avenue-The Avenues, Arabella in Al Bida’a, and Sidra Restaurants in Mahboula. DEAN & DELUCA
Your one-stop destination for all your needs this Ramadan By bazaar staff
It’s the best time of the year in the region; an entire month of gathering with loved ones and celebrations, and one of our favorite destinations, DEAN & DELUCA, has gone above and beyond prepping for the Holy Month. DEAN & DELUCA is THE destination to frequent this Ramadan. Their all-day menu means that you can enjoy your Iftar, Suhoor or desserts at the restaurant. Starting from the Maghreb prayer and until 8:30 pm, you’re bound to indulge in a delicious range of locally inspired dishes. We love trying foods from all over the world, but during Ramadan we crave the things that remind us of our traditions, heritage, family and homes. Local favorites such as Chicken Biryani, Kebbeh Bel Laban and Fish Sayadieh will fill up our empty bellies and warm our hearts. But you might want to make a reservation, especially if you will be visiting with a large group of people. A fancy Ramadan Iftar is fantastic, but the star meal is really the Suhoor. There is something magical about leaving your home after midnight for a meal. It’s also an essential meal for an easier day of fasting. Make sure you can power through the day by starting it with a light breakfast meal with their new specially created Suhoor menu. DEAN & DELUCA are featuring some favorite breakfast dishes such as the Spicy Foul Tajine and All-in-one Pot Baked Eggs. The Ramadan Suhoor specials that will be introduced this season are the Dill Egg Muffins and Salted Beef Potato and Chickpeas Pide. Suhoor will be served daily from 10:30pm to 2:00am so you have a big window to savor these special dishes. If you visit DEAN & DELUCA from sundown to sunrise, you can also relax with tea, coffee and dessert. You can devour a dessert platter of delectable Arabic sweets from the counter, customized to your preference and pair it with your cozy drink of choice from the wide selection of hot and cold beverages. This is a great way to catch up with friends and family and fulfill your sugar cravings during the Holy Month. Ramadan is also about spreading cheer, joy and gifting your loved ones with memorable experiences. This is also why DEAN & DELUCA is the best place to buy a special present for the people in your life that make Ramadan even more important. They really know how to design a gift basket full of gourmet delights. With a huge selection of baskets, trays and boxes to choose from you will start with the right foundation for a gift masterpiece. Dates, Arabic sweets, Turkish Delight, candy for Gergea'an and coffee are fantastic hostess-gifts 146
and are a heartfelt way of saying thank you for taking the time to welcome me into your home. We also love creating gifts for those who love to cook. Think aprons, cooking utensils and gourmet ingredients to inspire your favorite home chef to make more of their delicious meals. You can always select an already put-together gift or ask the team to create one for you. Nothing says I care, like a fully customized one-of-a-kind gift. To be honest, we sometimes buy ourselves gifts from DEAN & DELUCA because you can’t fill from an empty cup. Finally, DEAN & DELUCA offers all of the above services for corporate and business clients too. You can have your company’s team Iftar or Ghabga catered at the location of your choice. If you book early you would be benefiting from special discounts offers and free gifts, so definitely plan ahead. They can also create special promotional corporate gift baskets for clients, employees or whomever you need to wow in your business. LEARN MORE ABOUT YOU
This Ramadan, take the time to self-reflect By George Tarabay
My favorite month of the year is here. Of course, this month carries a lot of significance for our brothers and sisters in Islam. Ramadan is the month to pray, fast and transcend temptation, to live up to the exemplary life of Prophet Mohamed (PBUH). Yet, Kuwait’s diverse mix of people from literally every corner of the world and their various beliefs implies that many do not join in the sacred religious rituals. But this is where, to me, the beauty of Ramadan lies. There is something for everyone in sharing this experience. Fasting, one of the main rituals in this holy month, serves two purposes. Fasting from food and drink from sunrise to sunset challenges the body, and in turn, nurtures the mind. Every year, Ramadan carries with it candid camera moments on a daily, or better yet, an hourly rate. These moments become viral sensations when they happen abroad, but for Muslims, they are a common event. Moments like a policemen offering water and dates for people stuck in traffic during the hour of breaking the daily fast while they themselves are still fasting, the less fortunate being showered with food and clothing, people from all walks of life gathering in a mosque regardless of religious beliefs to share an Iftar meal with their Muslim brothers, Westerners 148
wearing dishdashas on their way to an Iftar invite…. I can keep this list going on for pages based only on my short, seven-year experience of living in Kuwait, and I know for a fact I have not seen a fraction of all those moments. Ramadan is just magical in that sense. It brings out all people’s great and hidden qualities to the public eye, not for show, but rather to set the standard for exemplary behavior. Witnessing all that often makes me reflect on “me”. I often find myself feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the goodness people display which leads me to think that I must do more for those who need it. And again, this is not a self-fluff piece that is meant to make you go “oh….” This is just me conveying why this holy month moves me to my core. So, if you’re new in Kuwait, or have been here for a while but feel you are disconnected from people during this holy month, I invite you to go on the streets after Iftar time and witness the magical love of life that this month infuses in people. Witness those transformative moments that are meant for pure good and not for show. Witness the melting pot that is this beautiful nation, where people all gather to just enjoy a great conversation and a heartfelt laugh but most importantly, witness your level of happiness rising at the sight of such pure and genuine human interactions. We are all one, molded from the same two ingredients, carbon and our desire to be loved. If you
reflect on the first ingredient you will soon realize that every other label falls then and there. We are all created the same, equal and alike. But then, our selfmade norms and divisive labels step-in and make you think: How are well equal, if the other person is this, and I am that? Here is the exact moment where you should reflect on the second ingredient—our desire to be loved. If you perceive every person you meet with that eye, you will eventually learn to override your inner categories and just look at everyone equally, thus achieving one of the most valuable virtues of the holy month. These thoughts took seven years to simmer inside my brain, and I’m glad they did, because, six years ago, when I decided to venture into learning about the significance of Ramadan for my brothers in Islam, I was actually venturing into learning more about myself and through that process I now perceive everyone with a loving eye. Wishing you all a happy and blessed Ramadan!

RECYCLE WITH NESPRESSO!
Nespresso continues to listen to customers and introduces recycling in Kuwait
By bazaar staff
Last October bazaar asked Julien Mario, Nespresso’s Regional Business Development Manager for Middle East and Africa about the possibility of implementing a capsule recycling program in Kuwait. The problem seemed so insurmountable, that it didn’t seem likely that we would see this very soon; the infrastructure was not in place, and Nespresso would have to invest from scratch. This would mean having to source or build the machines, find the right national partner and design a program which was easy to use and relevant locally. However, a mere six months later and Nespresso is now triumphantly introducing recycling across Kuwait with leading eco-industrial partner MRC. There is a Gallic matter-of-factness about Nespresso’s Julien Mario, but also an earnestness that can only be trusted when he says, “[Recycling] is a priority for us”. Nespresso is walking the talk with a process for recycling your favorite premium coffee pod which puts aluminum back into use as other lifestyle items, including pens and the Pixie coffee machine. The recovered coffee grounds are to be used as compost on farmland producing dates in Kuwait. “It’s a nice story to tell and unexpected,” says Julien, talking about a red worm that loves dates but hates caffeine, “there will be a dual purpose, a very nice fertilizer and it will get rid of these pests!” Talking of pests, humans are lazy. We give plenty of lip-service to environmental issues, and granted you cannot change what you do not acknowledge. But, we have only twelve years left to pull us back from a global warming precipice. What are the specific actions being taken which will lead to a long-term positive environmental impact? Nespresso has thought of what your pro-environment actions can be for you, and has made your role in recycling as easy as possible. You do not have to go one jot out of your way to be part of their initiative, which aims to have 100% recycling capability by 2020. “We can’t force people to recycle, but we can at least make sure that each market that is selling Nespresso is getting a recycle program”, expresses Julien determinedly. Saudi is coming next. If you are in a Nespresso boutique tasting the new latest premium portion coffees or perusing new accessories, there are clearly designated collection points where you can place your used capsules. You can collect capsules at home or at your place of work in the specifically designed bags which can be ordered online or picked up in store. The bags themselves are fully recyclable, being made of PE-LD 04 plastic, and can hold approximately 100 capsules. You also have the option of returning your collected used capsules to Nespresso couriers when they deliver your next order. So, wherever you enjoy Nespresso, you can very easily be part of the recycling program. Given that one of the three pillars of Nespresso’s “Positive Cup” commitment to sustainability is a low carbon footprint, the fact that no customer has to drive anywhere to specifically go to a recycling point is well-considered, nor do couriers drive out to only pick up recycling. “We do reverse logistics,” explains Julien. “We never travel empty, so we pick up when we drop off.” What is one immediate benefit to the customer, that we can expect to notice? There is absolutely no cost, not even for ‘business to business’ customers. The recycling bags for Nespresso Club members are issued completely free of charge at points of sale, be it through ecommerce or in retail outlets, and you will see no

absorption of the costs through raised prices. The costs covered by Nespresso of investing in people, farmland and the environment through the “AAA Sustainability Quality Programme” are significant, with over 200M CHF (KD 62 million) spent since 2015 on Nespresso’s sustainability commitment; a commitment that sits well alongside the UNDP Sustainable Development Goals. Proof positive that to “think global” you should “act local”. As the consumption of Nespresso in Kuwait is sizeable and one of the highest per capita, bazaar asks Julien if Nespresso thinks it can influence the country’s environmental policies around responsible consumption in some way, and he immediately responds “I would love Nespresso to have an effect on the overall commitment.” He continues, “I think that when you are a leader in your field such as Nespresso, [a commitment to sustainability] is your obligation, and “Where are we on our sustainability journey?” is the first question we ask in meetings.” It does not seem immediately obvious, that a lifestyle brand that services convenience and a throwaway culture, would be championing sustainability, and being confident to do so in such a well-planned way that it can take on the financial burden of its vision. But Nespresso has been doing this for decades with ‘Positive Cup’, Nespresso’s commitment to sustainability. While we may enjoy a product of privilege and constant innovation at the end point of “bean to cup”, and at the very beginning of the process Nespresso recognizes that they are dealing with farmers. These are people and communities who need investment in crops, land and education to continue producing high quality beans in a territory farmed to produce consistently over years to come. This is one of the longest-term business strategies we have seen. Responsible sourcing gives customers the added value of drinking coffee that makes them feel like they’re doing something for the social good, and that, in itself, makes Nespresso’s viability more sustainable in the long term. On top of that, recycling and taking care of the waste produced further bolsters customers’ positive opinions of Nespresso. “If we don’t do it, we won’t be in business tomorrow” Julien acknowledges, but let’s be honest Nespresso’s corporate social responsibility was always groundbreaking and continues to be so. Many organizations like to be seen doing something about recycling. But Nespresso has a program which is easy to use, works, and is relevant locally through thorough and applied research. “We didn’t want to just talk about it’, states Julien. “We wanted to make sure that Positive Cup was bullet-proof.”

SAY HELLO TO YUMMY CHICKEN, SHUWAIKH! Raising Cane’s opens its doors at Shuwaikh 125 By bazaar staff
Raising Cane’s, popular for its delectable chicken fingers, has opened a new location in Shuwaikh, and it got us super excited! All the way from Louisiana to Kuwait, the restaurant is known for its premium fried chicken tenderloin meals. We love ourselves a simple menu done right, because with a consistently delicious meal, you’ll end up craving more with every bite. Raising Cane’s has been around town with different locations, but we took a drive to check out their new branch at Shuwaikh. We were there for the opening event, and we’re pretty sure that they will start receiving many repeat visits for their delicious fried chicken fingers by both loyal and new caneiacs. The new location serves as one of the trendiest and the busiest spots in Kuwait at the moment, everyone from all ages passes by Shuwaikh every weekend or so (if not every day!) The location itself has a lovely seating area, both indoors and outdoors, for when the weather is either warm or breezy, you’ll surely find your spot. The menu remains classical, as it should! The Box Combo, which is the most popular combo on the menu, comes with four pieces of chicken fingers, crunchy crinklecut fries, fresh coleslaw, Texas toast, and the amazing One Cane’s sauce to fully dip in your chicken, and fries! I mean, the more the merrier, right?! The combo meal also comes with a regular drink, you can fill your cup with a regular soda drink, iced tea, or a highly refreshing lemonade. If you’d like to pick a combo that contains less than the Box Combo, then the 3 Finger Combo is just the one. It comes with three fried chicken fingers instead of four, minus the coleslaw. A fair trade, we think! But you can always upgrade your level of satisfaction at Raising Cane’s with their impeccable Sandwich Combo. Three chicken fingers inside a Kaiser roll, with Cane’s sauce, lettuce, and a side of crinkle-cut fries, and the usual regular drink. Raising Cane’s has always used the highest quality of ingredients. A freshly cooked and prepared meal is made to specifically ensure a lasting taste of the most delicious chicken tenderloin that is always served fresh and hot. Now that summer is here, we’ll definitely be looking for something satisfying to eat after beach days. Another bazaar hack? Load up your beach icebox with Raising Cane’s delicious drinks to stay hydrated while soaking in some rays of sunshine, a refreshing cup of lemonade or ice-tea will just do the trick! When you’re in Shuwaikh and you start getting hangry, while also looking for a fast and satisfying meal, you’ll have Raising Cane’s. You’ll not only get to have a killer Combo meal but will also have the chance to check out and enjoy their brand new location for the best vibes on this side of town. All that is left to say from our side is Bon Appétit!

Raising Cane’s is located in Shuwaikh 125, The Mall-The Avenues, The Forum-The Avenues (inside TEKZONE), Ahmadi Park, Jabriya Block 1A, Street 105 and Kuwait International Airport (Departures Area). ELISE AND RICK WETZEL The BLAZE-ing power couple By bazaar staff
Last year Blaze Pizza opened their first branch outside of the USA in Kuwait. Kuwait’s first Blaze Pizza location was an instant success; the lines were, and still are, quite long during the lunch rush hour because diners love the experience of building their own pizza and keep coming back for more. We met up with co-founders Elise and Rick Wetzel to find out more about their trail-BLAZE-ing (sorry, not sorry) success. Elise and Rick were sitting comfortably at one of the tables at The Avenues branch. If you didn’t know who they were, you would have assumed they were just two more diners enjoying their lunch. They were friendly, welcoming and very passionate about their work. I asked them if they expected this level of success when they were first starting out. Rick was quick to say, “We only know one speed and that is go very fast”. In 2011 the Wetzels had started thinking about starting a pizza restaurant that operated under a franchise expansion model. Less than a year later, they had opened two restaurants and now they are a little over six years old and have 325 restaurants in five countries. With a lot of hard work, and never turning off their superfast ‘turbo’ mode, they were recently named by Forbes magazine as the fastest growing restaurant chain ever. As for their success in Kuwait, Elise said “We knew that pizza as a concept is very translatable. And so, we had very positive expectations for it. But I think that what has happened here has surpassed anyone's expectations. You know, it's a different format to walk down the line and order anything you want on the pizza, or really in a way that's very unusual.” Watching people create their own pizza can be quite interesting. I noticed that many people will start with a signature, then as they progress down the assembly line, begin adding and taking away ingredients, or they get inspired by the people ahead of them. I know, I have definitely done this myself. The couple also attribute their local success to their great team here and their partnership with Alshaya. They had targeted Kuwait as their first location outside of North America, because historically the nation has always been very welcoming to American brands and that they could remain true to the Blaze brand. The Wetzels are veterans in the franchise model and entering the Kuwait market with Alshaya as their partner was their one and only Plan A. The company is always committed to bringing the brands as intact as they can to Kuwait, then they make the slight tweaks to perfect their operations in Kuwait. They joined forces in 2017 after a couple of years of discussion and now they have over five branches open in the Middle East with seven more on the way.
154
The duo are very proud of the fact that whether you are in Kuwait or in any of their US Blaze branches, it will always look, feel and taste the same. As chief brand officer, Elise works with the marketing team to make sure that they deliver a brand experience in every country that has the same spirit and voice that has gotten guests to line up for the concept since the very beginning. The long lines at Blaze Pizza can be attributed to the use of high-quality fresh ingredients and the dough that is made in-house with a secret recipe. Brad Kent, their Chief Culinary Officer and creator of the dough, insisted on using Extra Virgin Olive oil to achieve the best texture that was both chewy and crunchy even though it is more expensive. Elise was the one who found Brad in a lucky Google search, and when she approached him to join their team, he was already the owner of a very successful Los Angeles pizzeria. He fell in love with the idea and eventually joined the Blaze team full-time. It is this kind of passion that drives the Blaze Pizza team to create an experience that is enjoyed by everyone. No detail is spared. The packaging has been sustainable from the very first day, the cups are all plant-based so unlike regular plastic, they decompose quickly once they are discarded. “[Being environmentally conscious] is the price of entry in the market today,” Rick quickly added. Because Blaze is a young and modern brand, these values were all built into the company’s vision and way of doing business. “We like to say that we have a very big tent, and all are welcome. So, you will see older people and little kids. But you're right, ours is very much a young voice, but people who are young at heart, young in age or young at heart,” explained Elise. The concept is definitely a hit with millennials who love Instagramming their experience, starting from the pizza-making to the dining. If you don’t believe us, check out #blazepizza on social media. Elise and Rick are a married couple as well as being business partners. To many people that might be a liability, but they work well together as a team. “Our marriage comes first. We're also parents and we love being parents and so we're very good at keeping our priorities aligned and you know, we try to get home at night at a reasonable hour and will oftentimes say okay, we're not talking about pizza at home” Rick told me. He also said they eventually do talk about pizza in the end. They are obviously enjoying what they do, and that’s never a bad thing if what you do is what you love. They really do love pizza. Elise said, “We have a pizza oven in our backyard. And sometimes we'll swing by the restaurant grab some dough and will bring our own little Tupperware, some for sauce and cheese and then go back and have a little party,”. Meeting the Wetzels was a reminder that successful ventures need to be backed by passionate, caring people who want to disrupt the current market, which is exactly who they are and what they have done. And we’re glad, because we love Blaze Pizza just as much as they do.
Blaze Pizza is located in the Grand Plaza – The Avenues, Murouj – Phase 3, and Ahmadi Park. For updates and news follow them on Instagram @BlazePizzaME.

RAMADAN GEMS
Discover our favorite hacks and little moments that make the Holy Month all the more special! By bazaar staff
The bazaar hit list is back for another of our favorite moments and activities to do during the Holy Month of Ramadan. We all have different experiences when it comes to Ramadan, be it the extra number of family gatherings, or the simple act of giving back to the local community. So without any further ado, here are the teams’ favorite moments of the month! Yasmine El Charif (Content Manager): Actively engaging in community activities, and not paying someone else to do the work for you (totally not judging you if you do, every little helps)! Why I love it: While I completely recognize that Kuwait in general is quite the humanitarian nation, I personally love it when small groups of people get together to feed the less fortunate, gather donations for group Iftars, or sponsor a family’s Ramadan food basket. There’s something special about taking the time to do something for others, when you put in the effort personally, the reward feels so much greater. My recommendation: You don’t have to be fancy about this. Grab some friends, buy some ready-made meals and drive out to your closest mosque or co-op right at Iftar time to stop those still on the road to feed them. 156
Another idea is to host a Ramadan pot luck for Iftar, and gather small donations from friends and family toward sponsoring a family’s (or more) Ramadan basket or Machla. Umika Pidaparthy (Online Producer): Being invited to Iftar (hint, hint!) Why I love it: There's something about sharing a fulfilling meal during Ramadan that is so festive people of all backgrounds, breaking their fast and enjoying a feast together. You always feel so welcome and leave totally satisfied! My recommendation: If you are lucky to be invited to an Iftar meal, just say yes! It's a delicious way to bond with your friends/colleagues. Yasmin Gamal (Mixed Media Content): Ramadan Radio Dramas. Why I love it: I am not a fan of TV Ramadramas and haven't followed one in years, but I really enjoy listening to a good show on the radio. It reminds me of when I was much younger and would listen to them with my father in his car. My recommendation: You can tune in using any good radio app to almost any radio station in the world. That is how I get my fix of cheesy Egyptian radio shows right before Iftar time, it's a great way to pass the time. The entire process also sounds and tastes like home during Ramadan.
Hallah Danbouh (Mixed Media Content): Gergea'an. Why I love it: Candy, Duh! It's during those three days where I would actually fall in love again with family gatherings, because of the amount of candy we receive that ends up lasting us for the rest of the month. It is also difficult to resist during fasting, but it's definitely something to look forward to after Iftar. My recommendation: If there's a pile of candy in front of you, and you've already spotted your favorite ones, trust me and grab them all! Kids during these days are high on sugar and they will be merciless. So tread carefully, but also use your adult powers to your advantage. Jennifer Cádiz (Mixed Media Solutions): Being on the roads when it's super quiet. Why I love it: Kuwait roads and traffic is not the greatest experience at the best of times, but if you are fortunate to be able to experience the roads when they are quiet, it is bliss. My recommendation: If you can, try and go work an hour earlier and leave at least an hour later than the shortened office hours for Ramadan, or after Iftar if you do not have to observe with friends or family. If it is possible to avoid being on the roads just before Iftar then you will not experience those desperately trying to make it home to families and loved ones to break their fast. On your day off get up early and drive to somewhere you normally wouldn't go to, and enjoy Kuwait at its finest.

Besides, who wants to be caught up in the Ramadan traffic when you’re simply looking to pick up an organic chicken to roast for Iftar? Not this bazaar editor! I would simply pick up the phone, call the Talabia hotline and let the experts handle the rest while I dream about that tamarind marinade recipe that I’ve been dying to try out. Problem solved! We all know that by the time the sun sets and it’s finally time to eat, it’s pretty normal to feel quite parched during these hot climes. Stock up on your favorite Laban drinks from Activia in various flavors like tropical Mango and Kiwi to ensure that you break your fast on a delicious note! bazaar tip: chug a bottle of plain Activia Laban during suhoor and we guarantee that you won’t feel as thirsty when you wake up the next day. Next to our favorite Laban is usually a selection of delicious, natural, preservative free juices from Only Organic juices. These are always crowd pleasers, and with flavors like apricot, pomegranate and cherry, all of your Ramadan guests will find a taste that they would surely enjoy at your dining table. Another Ramadan table must-have is a selection of juices from Only Organic Juices. Exclusive to Alyasra Foods, Only Organic Juices are prepared with natural sugars, and this allows you to control your sugar intake during Iftar time. Let’s face it, we all crave that something sweet, so why not indulge in a healthier alternative? Only Organic Juices do not contain any added artificial sugars or harmful preservatives, so you would also be ensuring the healthiest option for your loved ones during Ramadan when dessert consumption hits an all-time high. Now that the table is set with a selection of delectable drinks, the next step is to make sure that nibbles for Iftar are aplenty! This is the only type of food that would keep hungry diners at bay while the final touches on your main courses are being done. While many people choose the traditional fatayer and sambousa route, why not try something different from Lamb Weston? We absolutely love their camembert bites and potato cubes, and like to use the perfectly breaded, golden bites as an indulgent topping to a massive arugula salad tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette. Whether you choose to serve these up as a side to your main course, to whet your guests’ culinary palates, or as clever salad toppings, you can’t go wrong with Lamb Weston products from Alyasra Foods. You also can’t go wrong with a classic offering of Shish Barak, or as we like to call them, Middle Eastern dumplings, prepared with classic Safi yoghurt. You can find all of these classic ingredients at Makani store or order them via the Talabia service to make sure your freezer and fridge are both stocked up for the season. For the main event during Ramadan, it’s always about the protein! You will surely impress your guests with a sumptuous 158

T-bone steak or a succulently roasted, organic roast chicken. As Alyasra Foods are an authorized distributor of CAB (Certified Angus Beef) in Kuwait, and you will be spoiled for choice with options like USDA Prime, Choice and Select grades. It doesn’t just end there, as you can choose from Australian, South African and Brazilian beef, it’s simply a matter of your preference, and you can rest assured that you will find it all at Makani. If chicken makes a frequent appearance on your Ramadan menu rotation, then look no further than Only Organic chicken! You’ll be getting your money’s worth with these free range chickens, as they are not only large enough to feed the entire family, but they also make for the tastiest chicken broth for all of those Ramadan soups that you will be cooking. When it comes down to it, simply having the knowledge that you’re feeding your family one happy, healthy chicken that is hormone free is so important, especially with the long fasting hours, you’ll want to guarantee that your family is feasting on the finest quality of fresh chicken. We were also so excited to learn that Alyasra Foods also carries Only Organic Eggs, because what’s an organic chicken without some organic offspring? Perfect for suhoor nights, you can make yummy quiches, classic shakshoukas or a straight up classic omelet. If, like this bazaar editor, you like to have breakfast for Iftar at some point during Ramadan (because who doesn’t miss pancakes for breakfast?!), then you can’t go wrong with packing in more nutrition by frying up some Only Organic Eggs next to those fluffy pancakes. Speaking of breakfast, another quick suhoor option is a healthful bowl of classic Kellogg’s cereal. Make sure you’re getting all the fiber that you will need this Ramadan and integrate Kellogg’s All-Bran flakes into your routine. You can even get creative and use the bran flakes in a delicious yoghurt parfait. We actually love pairing a classic yoghurt with Kellogg’s Muesli with nuts and dried fruits, and when we’re feeling a little naughty, the chocolate version. Feeling a touch of Italian flair this Ramadan season? Let’s face it, we all get bored with the traditional dishes after week one, and you will want a welcome break from overdosing on loads of rice and stew-based dishes. This is when you let your inventiveness take the lead with delicious Italian-inspired creations! Create the smoothest cream sauce for your pasta dishes with Oldenburger cooking cream, and don’t forget to load up on Parmesan for additional creaminess. It’s difficult to deny that dessert is essentially everyone’s favorite thing about Ramadan. Sure, it’s an excuse to pamper your taste buds, but dessert after a long day of fasting is such a rewarding experience, that you wouldn’t want to mess it up! This is where German brand Erlenbacher’s selection of frozen desserts comes into play. Take all the hassle out of your Ramadan dessert menu prep and stock up on their selections of frozen cheesecakes with different toppings to wow your guests at your next Iftar. With no added colorants, artificial flavors, nor preservatives, Erlenbacher uses real fruit offering you and your diners an absolutely natural and delicious dessert experience. For the little ones, we’re sure that icy cold Oreo Ice Cream sandwiches will do the trick and satisfy their sweet tooth cravings. One visit to Makani will save you so much time and money when preparing for Ramadan, and if you are too busy to leave the house, then simply call the Talabia hotline to arrange for everything that you might need with their home delivery service that is even more of a life-saver when it comes to allowing you to prioritize your responsibilities during the hectic month. 160

Inspired by the words Cairo and karaoke, the Egyptian rock band, Cairokee gives us their latest album release, The Ugly Ducklings. READY, X-CITE, GO!
Get Ramadan ready at the flip of a switch with X-cite By bazaar staff
It must seem like there is no end to the preparations during Ramadan what with family, friends and colleagues to share this time with. The kitchen or home is always filled with people milling about getting ready for iftar, suhoor or the next big Ghabqa. The smells, sights and sounds of Ramadan are a joy, and with X-cite making your time even easier in the kitchen this should be a time to savor. Using equipment that X-cite has to offer, bazaar explores a beloved traditional dish that can be produced as either savory or sweet; Qatayef. In essence, this is a stuffed pancake that is later fried, and it is a wonder of textures when 164
drizzled with a syrup in the dessert options, and we are trying sweet cheese qatayef. The first thing to do is to get the pancakes out of the way. The Breville scraper mixer with glass bowl (1) is so good for making the batter as it does exactly what its name suggests and scrapes the sides of the ingredients bowl catching all the goodies you’ve put in there. You can see when everything is all mixed together and has reached the ideal blend. Pop the batter in the Tefal pancake maker (2) and set aside the cooked pancakes, resting them in clean kitchen hand-towels to maintain their moisture whilst you prepare the pancake filling. Another popular qatayef filling is nuts and cheese, so grab your NutriBullet (3), place in it whole, toasted almonds and set it to pulse. This will give you the required texture so the nuts are not too powdery and a little crunch remains in
the filling. Place the pulsed nuts in the Philips Avance Collection food processor (4) and add to them desalted akawi cheese with the other dry ingredients such as sugar and a little mozzarella, and then add a splash of orange blossom and rose water. Next, take your stuffing add it to the center of your pancakes, fold them over covering the filling and pinch the pancake sides closed with your fingers. Take these to your Philips Viva Collection digital air fryer (5) and following the instructions, fry your qatayef. These desserts are delicious when served hot but so you don’t have to leave the dinner table to head back into the kitchen when you have company, prepare and fry the qatayef earlier. You can keep them warm in a dish stored in your Wansa food-warmer trolley (6) and continue to enjoy your guests around the dinner table.

DISCOVER THE TWINSET MILANO COLLECTION FOR SPRING/SUMMER 2019 Ethnic touches run through the entire TWINSET MILANO Spring/Summer 2019 collection: eyelet lace, crochet, feathers and fringe define dresses and trousers, knits and outerwear, creating a mood tied to the historic Coachella Festival, an attraction for today’s young bohemians. Monochrome print fabrics in red and black have a colonial inspiration and resemble the "Toile de Jouy" textiles made in Jouy-en-Josas in the late 19th century. The strong lines of the design are typical of wood engravings: distinctive, simple and elegant. Butterflies, a signature theme of the brand, are embroidered on kimono dresses, created as intarsia on leather jackets, and are the protagonists of jacquard motifs in the luxurious metallic shades of Lurex. New for spring and summer is the Limited Edition project distinguished by a label created especially for the occasion: its series of luxurious garments are characterized by a careful study of the brand DNA, a masterly use of fine materials and artisan crafting. This capsule collection is the result of a study of archive garments, inspired by the feminine world of lingerie and precious silk apparel with an early 20th century vintage mood. Silk satin in cool shades and natural white hues has lace intarsia and is decorated with all-over floral motifs. Linen cloth, with its typical natural appearance of an unfinished fabric, is decorated with hand-embroidery and oxidized sequins, which darken over time to augment the vintage charm of the garment. Footwear reflects the mood of the collection: the classic cowboy boot comes in a new sabot version and is decorated with stitching and a jeweled strap.

Your anticipations for a romantic encounter are flying high, and it may be cancelled. Don’t view it as a setback, or start feeling doubtful and uncertain. Clear your mind for a few days before you place your final decision.
AQUARIUS JAN 20 – FEB 18 You may have been extremely disappointment by someone that you consider important in your life. Feelings in lack of support and care are displaying themselves more often than usual. Don’t let this disappointment take its toll on you, and don’t hold it against yourself, instead, move on. You’re confident enough to not include this kind of toxic energy in your life anymore.
PISCES FEB 19 – MAR 19 CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22 You might need to do some damage control over your temper there, Cancer. Things are not going as you’ve been expecting, so you might need to tone down your extravagant expectations. Your temper itself will be contained, for now at least, and you won’t have to lash out on the smallest or the most detailed things that are currently surrounding you. Simply, stay calm.
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 22 Self-confidence is surprisingly at a low point these days, which is a very rare occasion for you Leo. This is causing vulnerability issues within your personal relationships. If you’re worried about confrontations, then you’re probably overreacting. Instead, try to meet your issues halfway, face them with care and remember to be kind and to stay humble instead of being overly confident.
VIRGO AUG 23 – SEP 22 Feeling frustrated recently? Unable to reach your career milestone, or afraid of taking risks? Then sit down with yourself and reevaluate your options, your goals, and your needs. That will allow you to properly evaluate your progress, your achievements, and it’ll help you in narrowing down your bucket list. You’ll end up seeing things more clearly and with a fresh look.
Starting to change your mind about important aspects in your life? You’re questioning different career paths, or a new group of people? Well, don’t expect any answers anytime soon. ARIES MAR 20 – APR 19 Ooh la la, Aries! Romance is in the air. But, it’s time to put that on hold and focus on your creative journey, plus your personal passions instead of seeking romance. Ignore your inner ruthless editor, and simply create for the sake of creation and the pleasure of it all.
LIBRA SEP 23 – OCT 22 Being too passive might raise problems in allowing others to trample all over you. You might feel that you deserve it, as your lack of ego can be surprising at times. Don’t let others take advantage of that quality, own up to yourself and start speaking up. Communicate better with the people around you, be clear to yourself first as the rest shall certainly clarify itself.
SCORPIO OCT 23 – NOV 22 There’s some negative energy that is trying to crawl its way onto you.
