Let us also guide you with some important back to school shopping. Long gone are the days when you could get by with some new notebooks and some click-y pens. We need a laptop or tablet and all the extras that go with these devices. Thankfully our friends at X-Cite helped us out this month and we’re passing it on to you. We’ve also decided that summer inspired us to keep on living our best lives throughout the year. And while we would love that to mean that we would be vacationing and reading meet-cutes by the pool all the time, it doesn’t! But we can make our homes and lives more accommodating; from relaxing scents using essential oils to smart organization hacks, MUJI can help us all live a better life. You might also need to make slightly bigger changes at home to get ready for school. We have found some great designs and deals at JYSK that can help you rethink your home office or studying corner. From great desks to spacious bookshelves, your space will be ready in no time, so you have no excuses about not getting the work done. We can’t just walk into fall without giving our wardrobes a tiny refresh. Whether it be contemporary workwear, stylish school drop off outfits, or just something to wear to an evening out with friends, Debenhams and DKNY has you covered. Don’t forget your skin care routine! The strong summer sun can take a toll on our skin, even if you religiously apply sunscreen. Luckily for us, the Body Shop’s bestselling Vitamin C range just got a glow up. With updated formulas and ingredients your complexion will be getting a glow up too.

Kind of hard to believe that just like that, summer is over and it’s back to life, back to school, back to work, and back to reality. Oh, and of course back to those infamous September traffic jams that nobody misses! Let’s hope they don’t last too long, and that everyone figures out their ideal timing to leave the house/office that reduces the amount of time they spend stuck in traffic.
This issue of bazaar is our way of gently easing you into the school year and out of the summer vibes. Let’s start off by getting our nutrition back in tip-top shape with the Functional Nutritionist, Lulwa Alarmali, in this month’s edition of Truth or Dare. Lulwa is making a difference every day by helping us change the way we think about health wellness, nutrition, exercise, and even the circadian rhythm. Regardless of the goals, Lulwa starts with an inside out approach to total health as opposed to just a quick fix to reach targets. From Nutrition, we challenge ourselves with a bit of sports with fencing champion Lulwa Al Ayoub in Up Close and Personal. Creating the community space to safely practice the sport and to empower women, the international, award-winning champion has been perfecting her talent for twenty-eight years and her story is super inspiring!
Self-expression begins with feeling it all – the good, the bad, the indescribable – and growing from the experience. DKNY wants you to wear what you feel because you feel it all deeply. You dress to express every side of you and you can be unapologetically yourself. 76

School’s starting for many of you, but for the rest of us, the last time we set foot in a classroom was when ringtones were polyphonic. Whether you loved it or hated it, there’s something wonderful about learning something or mastering a new skill. Blocking some time in your busy schedule to take a class in something that interests you is pure self-care. You’re investing time and money in yourself. You can opt for something online like using a platform like Skill Share or actually going in person (which is actually more fun than you can imagine). So here are some of our favorite things you can learn in a couple of hours this weekend.
Pottery You won’t become a master, but you might manage to make an actually usable mug, inspiring you to take it up as a long-term hobby. This tactile art is great for relaxing and zoning the world out and finding your center. Just take a look at the beautiful thing @claytherapystudio makes and you will be booking a class right away. Cooking You can nag an older relative to teach you a dish or two. Whether you’re a complete novice in the kitchen or want to level up your skill, cooking is an essential life skill for everyone. It is better for your health, wallet, the environment and your sanity than constantly
takeout. The @cookingclub offers some great pastry and baking classes that are even easy enough for kids.

The true Wolf Pack spirit, strength and agility were mastered by the American University of Kuwait

This year, AUK hosted a total of 48 games for UAAK and 18 games for the Sports League Tournament.Winning games is not unfamiliar to AUK athletes. These high rankings and achievements are byproducts of supportive coaches and a tight-knit University community. Connect your board to your calendar and email Add start or due dates to cards. That lets you sort your board by what’s due soon. You can also add labels to cards to filter boards by topic. Add a calendar view to see cards organized by date. Email things into your board. Each board has a private email address so you can add to it from your inbox. When you send an email to your Trello board, the subject line becomes the card title and the body of the email becomes the card description. You can add attachments too.

Collaborate with someone or a team You can assign cards to a collaborator. Or use a board for a team project. That provides transparency for teamwork and lets you clarify who is doing what. To make decisions, you can let people upvote cards they prefer.
Power up your board with useful features
Start with a template to make organizing even easier
It’s easy to attach things to any card. I like adding relevant documents, images, or checklists. Use checklists on the back of a card to break a project step into smaller pieces.
7 reasons to use Trello for project management
Sometimes the simplest tool is the right one. Trello is like a digital bulletin board. It’s easy to use and it’s free. If you’re juggling multiple projects and looking for a way to be better organized in 2022, give it a try.
DO YOU TRELLO?
I’ve long used Trello for free. For most everyday uses, you don’t need a paid plan. But if the simple Kanban column view isn’t sufficient for you, and you’d like to view your projects with timeline, map, or dashboard views, be prepared to pay.
Quickly add to your board
“Power-ups” are little apps that connect Trello to other services. You can link your Trello board to: Slack to automatically update a particular channel about project changes. Google Drive to link documents to cards or to be able to automatically create a Google Slide deck from your board. Giphy to easily search for and add gifs to any card.
Choose from hundreds of free template boards. Pick a category, like productivity, remote work, project management, marketing, or education.
Create a public board to share widely I mostly use Trello privately. But it’s easy to publish a board. Just as you can publish a Google Doc, you can similarly make a Trello board public.
By Jeremy Caplan
It’s easy and fast Trello uses a simple card-and-list format. Type something and hit return. That’s a card. Type something else. Another card. Drag cards from one column to another to set up lists. To set up your board, add a few cards and a couple of columns. Within 60 seconds, you’ve got a simple Trello board ready to go. It works equally well on the web or desktop, or on mobile apps that are free and well-designed.
Limitations Trello’s simplicity means it lacks some features available in more complex tools. For instance, it isn’t designed for writing or editing big blocks of text or hosting threaded conversations. Other project management tools, like Basecamp and Clickup, are better-equipped for that.Trello isn’t as customizable as alternatives like Notion or Coda, which allow you to create more sophisticated personalized project organization pages.
Below are seven things that make Trello worth using—plus some limitations and alternatives.
Certainly, that was the truism for bazaar when we experienced a fencing session with Toosh.
By bazaar staff
40 Meeting Lulwa for the first time, it’s impossible to believe that she has been fencing since 1995, she doesn’t look old enough. But, when watching Lulwa either coaching, or in action, you can’t deny the skill which proves that this international, award-winning champion has been perfecting her talent for twenty-eight years.
FENCING IN COMMUNITY
Fencing champion Lulwa Al Ayoub empowers women through sport up close & personal
Lulu humbly explains that she does feel community encouragement to continue on the path of opening access to fencing in Kuwait, and elevating women through this sport. She feels the endorsement of what she’s trying to achieve through the lack of obstacles being placed in her way. The Asian Games in 2006 provided the first real opportunity for Gulf women to participate in a large-scale sport competition but even back then Lulu had the courage to look beyond what was happening at the time saying, “Society, in general … needs more time to accept the role of sport in their daughters lives as … more than just a hobby…” But, Lulu, instead of waiting passively, became the change she wished to see. She made fencing her life, competing, teaching, and advocating for the sport. It’s this visible effort that has made such as effort, and has resulted in Lulwa Al Ayoub’s pristine reputation, which in turn elevates the fencing offering in Kuwait.
It was probably inevitable that Lulwa - or “Lulu” - would be involved in sport in some way, coming from such a sports-oriented family, with a footballer and swimmer for a father, and a mother working as Sports Supervisor in the Kuwait Ministry of Education. Lulu and her sister Balsam were often around their mother when she was supervising sporting events and competitions at the weekends, or present at various activities advocating participation in sport. “It was a lifestyle, and she encouraged us a lot,” says Lulu of her early exposure to a number of different kinds of sports through her mother. There’s no doubt that Lulu’s mother has been a huge influence on her life. Her mother strongly believes that sports develops character and the skills and qualities that can serve a person in life: perseverance, leadership, analytical thinking, decision making, effective use of time, and the ability to focus on what’s important. Sensing real athletic potential in her daughter, Lulu’s mother looked to enroll her in training for a more formal activity, rather than merely hoppingnot necessarily “aimlessly” but certainly without dedication - from one sport to another. Lulu found herself being dropped off at a sports club for girls where she was expected to find a discipline on which she could focus; nurturing and developing skills for that particular physical activity. Lulu stepped into the club, and mere moments later was enthusiastically approached by a woman putting together her own team for fencing. This lady was keen to find out which fencing team was Lulu in already. bazaar asks if that’s because Lulu looked like a fencer. Did the woman spot this perfect physique and just know that Lulu was champion material? However, with absolute honesty, Lulu confesses that she wasn’t always so lithe and, like we probably all did, had an awkward stage when developing as a teenager, and may have been a little out of shape. “I was not in shape at all!” are Lulu’s actual words. So, she didn’t embody what one may envision a fencer to look like, although of course Lulu definitely does fit that ideal today. Despite not knowing what the sport entailed, Lulu checked the lady’s list, saw that it was empty, and decided to be the first one to sign up for the fencing team. Wanting to be number one; that might say something about Lulu’s competitive spirit right there! Lulu also realized that if there were no team in existence already, that would mean not having to integrate into an already formed group, which can be difficult. Lulu was demonstrating strategic thinking long before even stepping onto a piste, which is the ideal attitude when taking on fencing, a sport which can be described as the physical embodiment of chess. It’s encouraging to know that you don’t have to be in perfect shape to be successful in fencing, as a barrier to taking part in sport, or even going to the gym, can be a lack of confidence in one’s physical state in the first place. That endless catch-22, paralyzing paradox that is, “you’ve got to work out to get in shape”, but feel like “you’ve got to get in shape before you can work out”. Lulu stresses, “It’s not physicality that is a barrier to fencing, it’s mental strength.” There are plenty of fencers who started out years ago not as fit and capable as they are now. There are even World Champions today who had to condition their bodies to match the strength of mind and attitude they exhibited through having the resilience to keep on going, no matter what, to achieve their dreams and goals. In order to get and keep that level of focus with no distractions, you need to be in a safe and supportive space to allow yourself to train your mind. It is this that you can find at Toosh.Winner. Here, the fencing community at the very least is incredibly welcoming and supportive.
Winner; the very first private fencing academy in Kuwait…and with that accolade of the “first” it’s unsurprising that Lulu is a Founder.

The company already has a pair of solarpowered over-the-ear headphones, the Urbanista Los Angeles, which Fast Company honored in its 2022 World Changing Ideas list. And while solarpowered over-ear headphones are indeed a good idea, solar-powered earbuds may be an even better one: Earbuds are typically used for mobile activities such as running or working out, where accessing electric power sources might be less convenient.“Westarted working on it in October of last year when we began work on the Los Angeles product,” says Urbanista’s brand and marketing director Tuomas Lonka. “When we announced that product in the spring last year we got a great reaction, so we knew early on we wanted to do an in-ear product as well.” The earphones themselves carry no solar cells; that responsibility falls on the charging case, which continuously recharges from exposure to all forms of outdoor or indoor light, says Giovanni Fili, CEO of Exeger, the Swedish company that

is naturally curious. As a journalist, writer, and media producer, she has her finger on the pulse of what’s going on with the next generation as it applies to media, social media, entertainment, and everything in between. She places a lot of emphasis on the value of observation. Talking to people. Interacting and engaging—and above all else, asking questions and actively listening—are each essential for grasping what people want and need. In other words, pay attention so that you can come to the table with the audience’s point of view. As she puts it, she loves nothing more than to just turn up and look at the world. But it’s not enough to simply “be” or “ask”—you need to listen and then act: “It’s always worth talking to people. I think the question is, what are you asking them? What are you listening for? And what are you not hearing when they tell you things?”

When you go into a negotiation, it’s natural to want to win. It can be uncomfortable to back down or give up something, but having an either/or mentality can hinder what’s possible, says Wendy Smith, coauthor of Both/And Thinking: Embracing Creative Tensions to Solve Your Toughest Problems. Humans default to either/or psychologically because we want a clear choice, she explains. going to want to move forward. But to get there, you have to make micro shifts between left and right to balance. You’re also not overemphasizing one side and [underemphasizing] the other, because if you do you fall over. These micro tradeoffs you’re making are in service of the broader, integrated, more holistic vision.”
There’s also a lot of ego in choices. “In either/ or thinking, we want to be right,” says Smith. “If I’m right, somebody else must be wrong. We look at what’s good about our point of view, we surround ourselves with others who agree with us, and then we diminish the other side. It’s a very defensive reaction, and we fail to see that there could be multiple pieces that are right, even if they conflict in what they’re saying.”
Both/And Approach
Taking a both/and approach can be applied to any part of your life when you stop to recognize the either/or questions and the situations you encounter, she adds.
“Pause and ask, ‘How can we address and enable both this and that together?’” says Smith. “That opens up new ways of just engaging with the question. Psychologist Paul Watson once said, ‘The problem is not the problem. The problem is how we think about the problem.’ If we frame an either/or, we will go down the road of trying to make a choice. If we frame both/and, we will expand the possible solution set.”
“Let’s stop thinking about ‘I’m right and you’re wrong,’ and pause and listen,” Smith says. “It doesn’t mean we have to agree with the other person. But by stopping and listening, maybe we can learn something and work together to come up with something better.”
Getting to a Trade-off With a both/and approach, you still have to make choices, says Smith. “Some people will say, ‘Both/anding is all about the win/win.’ We actually don’t find that,” she says. “What we find is that sometimes both/anding is making small choices over time that allow you to accommodate both. It’s about accommodating trade-offs.” Making effective trade-offs requires an ability to look at the big picture, managing for today and for tomorrow. “The metaphor we use is tightrope walking,” says Smith. “If you look off into the horizon, you’re
Getting to broader truth requires listening to one another, putting the pieces together, and realizing that there are different ways to see a situation and value the differences. Smith calls it a “both/ and” approach and getting to this place is a lifelong practice of pausing and shifting. “Either/or might lead to some good short-term decisions, but in the long term, it’s limited at best and detrimental at worst,” says Smith. “‘Both/ anding’ is a better alternative. It’s not easy to do, but it creates more creative and sustainable solutions.”Thefirst step is noticing our either/or NEGOTIATE BETTER
Smith says trade-offs are dilemmas. “By shifting to think about underlying paradoxes and the potential for both/and, it shifts how we can then go back and respond to those dilemmas or trade-offs. Those dilemmas are chosen,” she says. “For example, if you think about political trade-offs, right now we’re stuck in an either/or world of polarization where everybody’s fighting for their position. But we’re not getting to a better point in the big picture.”
Why getting rid of this mindset can help you succeed in any negotiation questions or situations. Next, pause, shift, and invite them both to be right. For example, a question may be, “Do we spend money on this project or that project?”
46 An open decision can leave you feeling anxious and uncertain,” she says. “Uncertainty raises fears, and by making a clear choice, you quell those fears.”

The action comes after an antitrust regulator in the U.K. launched an investigation last year into whether Amazon (as well as Google) has done enough to eliminate fake reviews. U.S. lawmakers raised a similar question in 2019. That same year, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) fined a website that paid an operative to post reviews on Amazon.
48 In a suit filed Monday, the retailer said it hopes to “identify bad actors” and remove any fake reviews that its own technology and monitoring haven’t yet caught.
Amazon says they represent the total reported to Meta since 2020—and at least half have already been taken down.

Look beyond Amazon. This is especially worth doing for bigger ticket items. See if reviews on other sites, by professional critics and streamers on YouTube and other channels, tend to jibe with what you see on Amazon. Weigh verified reviews. A “verified purchase” on Amazon means the company has been able to confirm that the reviewer actually bought the product, giving more credence to their opinion. They’re not foolproof, though. If you spot red flags like several misspelled words and bad grammar, proceed with caution.
The Facebook accounts targeted in the suit might take care of some of the fake review issues, but they won’t weed out all of them. If you’re worried about the star rating of an item, especially after checking it on a site like ReviewMeta or Fakespot, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself:
Inside the thriving business of writing fake Amazon reviews
Flooded with fake and misleading reviews on many of its products, Amazon is going on the offensive, filing suit against the administrators of what it says are over 10,000 Facebook groups that are used to manage those reviews and incentivize people to post them.
IS THE TRUTH OUT THERE?
Amazon says it has over 12,000 employees who look for fraud and abuse (including fake reviews) on its site. In 2020, it proactively stopped over 20 million fake reviews, it says. The 10,000 groups mentioned in the suit are not all currently active.
Amazon accuses those in charge of the Facebook groups of encouraging people to write fake reviews in exchange for free products or money. One of the groups identified in the lawsuit is “Amazon Product Review,” which Amazon says had more than 43,000 members until Meta took down the group earlier this year.
“Proactive legal action targeting bad actors is one of many ways we protect customers by holding bad actors accountable.” The action comes as the issue of misleading reviews continues to grow. Fake reviews artificially inflate a product’s star rating (or lower a competitor’s rating), making it more appealing to casual shoppers. That can lead to them buying something that’s substandard—or just plainThejunk.problem has become so widespread that a cottage industry has popped up, analyzing a product’s reviews and filtering out ones that might be fraudulent. Sites like ReviewMeta can help shoppers see that, for instance, a product with a 4.4 rating on Amazon would likely receive just a 1.9 rating if it weren’t artificially inflated.
“Our teams stop millions of suspicious reviews before they’re ever seen by customers, and this lawsuit goes a step further to uncover perpetrators operating on social media,” said Dharmesh Mehta, Amazon’s vice president of selling partner services, in a statement.
Read the review, sorting by newest. You’ll not only get a sense of how the product is performing these days, but also you can compare what recent users have to say. Notice the patterns in the writing to see if they sound like how a normal person would write. And give less weight to the ones that leave a star rating, but no comments.
Amazon did not disclose the names of the individuals it is pursuing or the names of other Facebook groups.

So, what did she do? She packed her bags, moved to Dubai for what she thought would be a six-month stint to complete a course on sports nutrition, and ended up spending close to five years there. If you have been struggling with gut health issues, try eliminating gluten and dairy for two weeks and see how the body does. A lot of the time people have sensitivity to gluten and dairy and it can continue to aggravate the gut, taking a break from these two foods usually helps the gut to Alignheal.your body to its natural circadian rhythm by making sure you get outside first thing in the morning (not through the window – it doesn’t count) and start dimming your lights 2-3 hours before bedtime, this acts as a signal for your body to start winding down.
On the basis of the results of the tests, the chat, and just an overall assessment, which may include a body fat analysis if weight loss is a goal, she builds a nutritional plan, with a supplement protocol, and may even recommend the elimination of gluten and dairy if she thinks it may be beneficial for your gut health.
Eat good quality animal proteins at every meal, such as eggs, meat, seafood, etc. This is key for building lean muscle and muscle is the building block of longevity. This can include protein powder, ideally a good quality whey protein powder if there is no dairy sensitivity.
Lulwa is a dietitian and nutritionist but she does occasionally like to indulge in some treats. Her favorite guilty pleasures are a fried chicken sandwich and a Snickers bar, and when she feels overwhelmed she enjoys binge watching Netflix! We are definitely on board with occasional indulgences, sometimes a little more! In the little free time she has, Lulwa loves to dance, workout, travel, and most importantly read. Her favorite book of all time is ‘Everything is Illuminated’ by Jonathan Safran Foer, which she recommends for everyone to read. We are going to be adding it to our reading list.

The Hieatts were determined to do something to change their town for the better. When David tells the story, he starts with his beliefs: “I’ve always loved business, but . . . I’ve always thought a business could be a tool for some kind of change you believed in.” Upon discovering that Cardigan had been the headquarters of jeans manufacturing in the U.K., leaving hundreds of skilled makers behind, he knew what they were going to do: Instead of making low-cost jeans, they would make a great pair of jeans, sustainably, get people their jobs back, and show that “you can make in Britain and you can do it really, really well.”But how do you get people to believe in something that already failed? Again, use your story. When it’s told truthfully, with heart and purpose, customers rally with your brand and respond. The Hieatts’s “getting people their jobs back” story is powerful because of the authenticity of its characters, conflict, purpose, and optimism. But it also sells their jeans. Every year, they are able to hire back more of the “grand masters,” and customers have responded. Even Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, wore a pair, promoting their cause. Today the Hieatts operate from the same factory that shut down two decades ago, and from that remote place at the edge of the sea they inspire a network of influence and change.
How to tell a compelling story to motivate others
When facing uncertainty, the most useful stories encourage imagination, hope, curiosity, and purpose. If we can imagine a narrative about our personal uncertainty with characters, conflict, and resolution, we are on our way to a powerful reframing of the possibility at hand. When Clare and David Hieatt moved back to the tiny town of Cardigan, Wales, they could feel the negative effects caused by the collapse of the jeans industry when jobs went overseas twenty years earlier. For David, this kind of loss felt personal because a similar closure happened when he was a boy. He recalls riding the school bus and seeing the dirty faces of the miners returning from work, until one day, when the mine closed, “they were gone. Just like that, they vanished.”
C M Y CM MY CY CMY K [Continued...]
By Nathan Furr and Susannah Harmon Furr Stories awaken possibility because they inspire curiosity and help us imagine what might be possible. Ursula K. Le Guin, one of the great science fiction writers, wrote stories to “dislodge my mind, and so the reader’s mind, from the lazy, timorous habit of thinking that the way we live now is the only way people can live.” Stories also motivate us to take action, even in the face of uncertainty. Indra Nooyi, the CEO who led Pepsi through a massive health and sustainability transformation, told us that stories were her primary tool for change: “I could fall back on a lot of personal stories, you know, talk about my own experiences growing up with water shortages and electricity shortages . . . examples of issues related to health and wellness that were very personal and stark.”
THE STORYTELLERS RULE THE WORLD
Develop a narrative, not a vague mission statement. We are motivated by narratives—with characters, conflict, and resolution—more than by mission statements. Stories about who we are and the future we are trying to create will be more powerful than any vague “strategy.”
According56 to neuroscience studies, stories have a remarkable ability to change our thinking, for example by demonstrating how our minds literally sync with each other as we hear a story. But decades before neuroscience proved it, philosopher Søren Kierkegaard wrote about the importance of imagining what we can do as the first step in eventually taking action. Kierkegaard believed deeply in our potential, if we could just imagine it, writing that “there is nothing with which every [person] is so afraid as getting to know how enormously much he/she is capable of doing and becoming.” It is an inspiring thought and worth reflecting on, given Kierkegaard’s conclusion after a lifetime of reflection on human possibility: “If I were to wish for anything, I should not wish for wealth and power, but for the passionate sense of the potential, for the eye which, ever young and ardent, sees the possible.” How can you get started on creating your own story to guide you through uncertainty? Begin by paying attention to what social entrepreneur Mike Smith calls “the tiny whisper that tells us we can do something incredible.” Looking around his isolated, rural town of 2,000 people with a poverty rate above 40 percent, Smith heard that whisper. His idea was to create an indoor skate park that could serve as a resource for kids like the one he had been: creative, a bit rebellious, on the fringes but needing community. He didn’t even have a checkbook, but he assembled a group of advisers and started fundraising to support the park. Today, that skate park has welcomed over 10,000 skaters, served over 250,000 meals, and helped over 1,000 youth with its services. Smith’s many humanitarian projects are sponsored by major brands like Vans, Jostens, and Red Bull. Reflecting on finding his story, Smith argues it’s about not traditional success metrics but finding what you are good at: “We have to ask what’s driving us. It cannot be money. [ . . . ] People always say do what you’re passionate about, [but] you should do what you’re good at, what you have a good skill set for. For me, it was gathering a community around an issue, networking, and speaking.”
Focus on values, questions, and problems to be solved rather than specific outcomes Most of us think of stories in terms of outcomes (e.g., I want to be a CEO, I want to be married and have two kids by age 38). Try to focus instead on the values and passions that are important to you (healthy relationship, meaningful work) or the problems you could solve that would be most interesting to you.

Reflection and practice
A powerful story will encourage curiosity, help you imagine what’s possible, and create the desire to get you moving forward. Imagine your life as a shelf holding several books full of potential stories, and ask, “What story do I want to pull down off the shelf and read? What do I wish the main character of my story would do?” It’s your turn to create a story to guide you through uncertainty. Here are some ways to start: Imagine speculative personal fictions. Alone or with the help of friends, develop a handful of short paragraphs about what your life could look like in five years. Alternatively, at the beginning of the year, write the holiday card that you would love to be able to send at the end of year. What would it look like to live an intentional year you felt inspired by? Use these to start breaking boundaries about what the future could be. If you find yourself getting stuck, try the inverse and write a story about what you don’t want. Remember that great ideas may start as tiny whispers.
Melinda Thomas, cofounder of multiple companies including Octave Bioscience, CardioDx, and ParAllele, and New York City’s first entrepreneur in residence, takes this advice a step further, arguing that you should systematically explore your strengths. Part of what helped her through the uncertainty of multiple startups—the “foggy whiteout conditions without a road map . . . [where] you don’t quite know what to do or how to move forward”—was having a sense of her skill set. “Pay attention and be introspective,” she advises. “Take every test you can take. MyersBriggs. Superpower. StrengthsFinder.” Pay attention to what resonates and then “pilot the hypotheses” in low-risk situations to build your confidence around what you like and are good at. It is on the back of these “certainties” that you have the strength to step into the unknown.
Take time for introspection to uncover the tiny whisper. Ask yourself, “Under what circumstances do I do my best work?” Also, ask friends, colleagues, parents, and partners what they see as your strengths and capabilities.

For example, why do you want to be the CEO? Do you have a different vision for how the company should be run or how it should treat its people? Infuse your story with verbs like help, inspire, shape, and change, rather than lists of achievements.

The 350Z, a driving enthusiast’s delight, marked Nissan’s return to the sportscar segment following a short hiatus and took the world by storm in 2003.
The reborn Z was built on the company’s innovative FM (Front Midship) platform and powered by a smooth-revving, high-output 3.5-liter V6. In 2005, Nissan created a special version to celebrate the Z’s 35th anniversary and equipped this unique model with a suite of performance tuning and upgrades. Nissan’s engineers retuned the engine to produce an additional 13 horsepower, raising the total to 300 horsepower, with shifting duties performed by a 6-speed manual gearbox. Other special equipment for this commemorative model included exclusive five-spoke, 18-inch alloy wheels, a front spoiler, Brembo® brakes, special badging, and a Bose® six-speaker premium sound system.

Why the design thinking process is so important: a primer south, coral cover is now at a region-wide high, at 33%.Thesouthern sector has a dynamic coral cover record. In the late 1980s coral cover surpassed 40%, before dropping to a region-wide low of 12% in 2011 after Cyclone Hamish.
that a reef has recovered by a person being towed behind a boat to obtain a rapid visual estimate of coral cover is like flying in a helicopter and saying a bushfire-hit forest has recovered because the canopy has grown back.
My study, published last year, examined 44 years of coral distribution records around Jiigurru, Lizard Island, at the northern end of the Great Barrier Reef.
Coral cover is a broad proxy metric that indicates habitat condition. It’s relatively easy data to collect and report on and is the most widely used monitoring metric on coral reefs.
64 In the north of the reef, coral cover usually fluctuates between 20% and 30%. Currently, it’s at 36%, the highest level recorded since monitoring began more than three decades ago. This level of coral cover comes hot off the back of a disturbing decade that saw the reef endure six mass coral bleaching events, four severe tropical cyclones, active outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish, and water quality impacts following floods. So what’s going on? High coral cover findings can be deceptive because they can result from only a few dominant species that grow rapidly after disturbance (such as mass bleaching). These same corals, however, are extremely susceptible to disturbance and are likely to die out within a few years.
In the Australian Institute of Marine Science’s report, reef recovery relates solely to an increase in coral cover, so let’s unpack this term.
By Kaitlyn McInnis
The Australian Institute of Marine Science’s longterm monitoring program has been collating and delivering this information since 1985. Its approach involves surveying a selection of reefs that represent different habitat types (inshore, midshelf, offshore) and management zones. The latest report provides a robust and valuable synopsis of how coral cover has changed at 87 reefs across three sectors (north, central and south) over the past 36 years.
The Great Barrier Reef spans 2,300 kilometers, comprising more than 3,000 individual reefs. It is an exceptionally diverse ecosystem that features more than 12,000 animal species, plus many thousand more species of plankton and marine flora. The reef has been teetering on the edge of receiving an “in-danger” listing from the World Heritage Committee. And it was recently described in the State of the Environment Report as being in a poor and deteriorating state. To protect the Great Barrier Reef, we need to routinely monitor and report on its condition.
THINK BETTER
The finding of high coral cover may signify a reef in good condition, and an increase in coral cover after disturbance may signify a recovering reef. But in this instance, it’s more likely the reef is being dominated by only few species, as the report states that branching and plating Acropora species have driven the recovery of coralAcroporacover.coral are renowned for a “boom and bust” life cycle. After disturbances such as a cyclone, Acropora species function as pioneers. They quickly recruit and colonize bare space, and the laterally growing plate-like species can rapidly cover large Fast-growingareas.Acropora corals tend to dominate during the early phase of recovery after disturbances such as the recent series of mass bleaching events. However, these same corals are often susceptible to wave damage, disease or coral bleaching and tend to go bust within a few Inferringyears.
Cautious optimism
While there’s no data to prove or disprove it, it’s also probable that extinctions or local declines of coral-affiliated marine life, such as coral-eating fishes, crustaceans and mollusks have also Withoutoccurred.moreinformation at the level of individual species, it is impossible to understand how much of the Great Barrier Reef has been lost, or recovered, since the last mass bleaching event.Based on the coral cover data, it’s tempting to be optimistic. But given more frequent and severe heatwaves and cyclones are predicted in the future, it’s wise to be cautious about the reef’s perceived recovery or resilience.
The design thinking process is a two-pronged approach that involves both empathetic ideology and a process that aims to find the best possible solution for gaps in the market or problems in a given demographic or community. Big-name brands such as Apple and Samsung were quick to adopt this user-focused approach early on to help foster innovation in order to provide long-term positive solutions for users and clients.
Are we being catfished by coral cover?
It suggested that 28 of 368 species of hard coral recorded at that location haven’t been seen for at least a decade, and are at risk of local extinction.LizardIsland is one location where coral cover has rapidly increased since the devastating 201617 bleaching event. Yet, there is still a real risk local extinctions of coral species have occurred.
The results Overall, the long-term monitoring team found coral cover has increased on most reefs. The level of coral cover on reefs near Cape Grenville and Princess Charlotte Bay in the northern sector has bounced back from bleaching, with two reefs having more than 75% cover. In the central sector, where coral cover has historically been lower than in the north and

The region is currently experiencing outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish. And yet, coral cover in this area is still relatively high at 34%. Based on this robust data set, which shows increases in coral cover indicative of region-wide recovery, things must be looking up for the Great Barrier Reef – right?

Epic is another popular kids ebook app. I have mixed feelings about it. My younger daughter’s school offered access to it during the pandemic and it opened up a lot of great nature books. It’s easy to use. However, the app leans into gamification and extrinsic motivation, applying social media’s screen temptation tactics to entice kids to repeatedly open the app. I know that rewarding kids for reading is popular, but it can signal that books are a chore to be finished. Epic’s parent dashboard shows minutes read and books finished as if reading is about volume, speed, and checking things off of a list, rather than pleasure.

I like that the service highlights lots of books written between 1995 and 2015, often ignored by contemporary-focused book reviews. What Should I Read Next? offers an even simpler starting point. Type in the name of a book you love and get a list of 20 or so related books. When I recently typed in Endurance and Unbroken, two fantastic non-fiction survival adventure books, I got recommendations that included some other adventure books and some that were unrelated. Limitation: It doesn’t let you check out physical books. For that, you’ll have to use a separate app or your local library’s site. World Cat tells you which libraries near you have a particular book. It works in multiple languages and connects to more than 10,000 libraries globally. It lets you search for any format or language, whether you need a book in print, ebook, braille, audio, or other format. Kanopy, also owned by OverDrive, provides free access to feature films and documentaries, accessed by logging in with your library card. I love that once you have an account set up, you can watch on the Web or on an iOS or Android device, or on your SmartTV app (Roku, Samsung, Amazon, etc). There’s a great kids section that has Sesame Street episodes; video versions of books by Eric Carle, Mo Willems and other great children’s authors; math and science lessons for kids; and a variety of age-appropriate short films.

68 PURPOSE-BUILT FOR PERFORMANCE: THE NEW PORSCHE 911 GT3 RS
HIGH-PERFORMANCE
By bazaar staff
The new Porsche 911 GT3 RS makes no secret of its intentions: it is uncompromisingly designed for maximum performance. The 386 kW (525 PS) road-legal high-performance sports car takes full advantage of technology and concepts from motorsport. Even beyond the high-revving naturally aspirated engine with racing DNA and intelligent lightweight construction, it is, above all, the cooling and aerodynamic systems of the 911 GT3 RS that connect it most directly with its motorsport brother, the 911 GT3 R.
SPORTS CAR WITH INTELLIGENT AERODYNAMICS
69 Central-radiator concept inspired by motorsport – the foundation for active aerodynamics
[Continued...]
The basis for a significant performance boost is the concept of a central radiator – an idea that was first used in the Le Mans class-winning 911 RSR and subsequently in the 911 GT3 R. Instead of the three-radiator layout seen in previous cars, the new 911 GT3 RS relies on a large, angled centre radiator in the car’s nose, positioned where the luggage compartment is located on other 911 models. This has made it possible to use the space freed up on the sides to integrate active aerodynamic elements. Continuously adjustable wing elements in the front and on the two-part rear wing, in combination with a number of other aerodynamic measures, provide 409 kg of total downforce at 200 km/h. This means that the new 911 GT3 RS generates twice as much downforce as its 991.2-generation predecessor and three times as much as a current 911 GT3. At 285 km/h, total downforce is 860 kg. A drag reduction system (DRS) is fitted in a production Porsche for the first time. To achieve low drag and higher speeds on straight sections of the track, the DRS allows the wings to be flattened out at the push of a button, within a specific operating range. The airbrake function is activated during emergency braking at high speeds: the wing elements at the front and rear are set to maximum, creating an aerodynamic deceleration effect that significantly supports the wheelThebrakes.look of the new 911 GT3 RS is characterised by the large number of functional aerodynamic elements. The most prominent feature of the GT sports car is the swan-necksupported rear wing, which is significantly larger in all dimensions. The rear wing consists of a fixed main wing and an upper, hydraulically adjustable wing element. For the first time on a Porsche production vehicle, the upper edge of the rear wing is higher than the car’s roof. In addition, the front end of the 911 GT3 RS no longer has a front spoiler, but instead features a front splitter that divides the air flowing over and underneath. Sideblades accurately direct air outwards. Front wheel arch ventilation is provided via louvred openings in the front wings. Inlets behind the front wheels, in the style of the iconic Le Manswinning 911 GT1, reduce the dynamic pressure in the wheel arches. Sideblades behind the intake ensure that the air is directed to the side of the vehicle. Air from the centrally positioned radiator flows out via large nostrils on the front lid. Fins on the roof direct the air outwards, ensuring cooler intake temperatures in the rear. In the new 911 GT3 RS, the openings in the rear side panel are used exclusively to improve aerodynamics and not to draw in process air. The rear wheel arch also features an intake and a sideblade for optimised airflow. The rear diffuser comes from the 911 GT3 and has been slightly adapted. Track suspension that can be adjusted from the cockpit Even the suspension comes in for aerodynamic attention. Because the wheel arches of the new 911 GT3 RS are subject to powerful airflows, the components of the double-wishbone front axle are designed with teardrop-shaped profiles. These aerodynamically efficient links increase downforce on the front axle by around 40 kg at top speed and are otherwise only used in highend motorsport applications. Because of the wider track (29 millimetres wider than the 911 GT3), the double-wishbone front axle links are also correspondingly longer. To ensure that the downforce balance between the front and rear axles is maintained even when braking from high speeds, the suspension engineers have significantly reduced pitching under braking. On the new 911 GT3 RS, the front ball joint of the lower trailing arm has been set lower on the front axle. The multi-link rear axle
The 4.0-litre high-revving naturally aspirated engine has been further optimised compared with the 911 GT3. The increase in power to 386 kW (525 PS) is achieved primarily via new camshafts with modified cam profiles. The singlethrottle intake system and the rigid valve drive are derived from motorsport. The seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) has a shorter overall gear ratio than the 911 GT3. Air intakes on the underbody ensure that the transmission can withstand even extreme loads during frequent use on track. The 911 GT3 RS accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 296 km/h in seventh gear. Aluminium monobloc fixed-calliper brakes with six pistons each and brake discs with a diameter of 408 mm are used on the front axle. Compared with the 911 GT3, the piston diameters have been increased from 30 to 32 mm. In addition, the thickness of the discs has been increased from 34 to 36 mm. The rear axle continues to be fitted with 380-mm brake discs and four-piston fixedcalliper brakes. The optionally available Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) has 410-mm discs on the front axle and 390-mm discs on the rear axle. The new 911 GT3 RS comes standard with forged light-alloy centre-lock wheels. Roadlegal sports tyres measuring 275/35 R 20 at the front and 335/30 R21 at the rear ensure a high level of mechanical grip.
70 has also been adjusted, with modified spring rates. The driver assistance systems and rearaxle steering also have an even more dynamic set-upThehere.911 GT3 RS offers three driving modes: Normal, Sport and Track. In Track mode, the basic settings can be individually adjusted. Among other settings, the rebound and compression damping of the front and rear axles can be adjusted separately and in several stages. The rear differential can also be adjusted via rotary controls on the steering wheel. This is done quickly and intuitively with an operating and display concept also borrowed from motorsport: Four individual rotary controls and a button for the Drag Reduction System (DRS) are located on the steering wheel. These rotary controls are clearly displayed via graphics in the instrument cluster during the adjustment process. The 911 GT3 RS also features the track screen already familiar from the 911 GT3. At the touch of a button, the driver can reduce the digital displays on the two seven-inch side displays to essential information only. The gearshift indicators to the left and right of the analogue tachometer have also been taken from the GT3.
High-revving four liter six-cylinder boxer engine
Lightweight construction all the way Intelligent lightweight construction has been a basic principle of all RS models ever since the legendary 911 Carrera RS 2.7. Thanks to an array of lightweight construction measures such as the extensive use of CFRP, the 911 GT3 RS weighs in at only 1,450 kg (kerb weight according to DIN) despite many larger components. The doors, front wings, roof and front lid, for example, are made from CFRP. Lightweight CFRP is also used in the interior, for example in the standard full bucket seats. THE FUTURE OF CARS
A data science expert explains how ‘over-the-air’ updates will change the auto industry to the dealership. Either way, notifying the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and all affected drivers is mandatory. Why over-the-air updates matter Electric vehicle sales nearly doubled from about 300,000 in 2020 to more than 600,000 in 2021.
By Vivek Astvansh
People72with recalled vehicles usually have to schedule a visit to an authorized dealership, where a mechanic repairs the car. But vehicles are increasingly high-tech contraptions. Although most recalls still require the replacement or repair of auto parts, such as air bags or brakes, a growing number of issues are resolved without any help from a mechanic. All they require is an “over-the-air update.” That’s the technical term for what happens when you update any software program used by a device, whether’s it’s a smartphone or a sedan. Over-the-air updates are especially common for vehicles that run fully or partially on electricity instead of gasoline or another fuel. These digital recalls require little or no effort. For example, Tesla regularly fixes its cars by updating its software. Its drivers often don’t have to do a thing. In other cases, a Tesla owner simply has to tap a few buttons on the car’s touchscreen. According to the law, it doesn’t matter if safetyrelated fixes demand a software upgrade or a trip
Musk objects to the word ‘recall’ Tesla has pushed harder than its competitors to rely primarily on over-the-air updates to fix problems
Whenever automakers discover that a vehicle has a defect or does not comply with U.S. laws, they must notify the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and mail a notice to each customer who owns or leases the affected vehicles.
Automakers must also recall those cars, trucks or SUVs–which means they have to fix the defect across the entire fleet. with its electric vehicles. Its CEO, Elon Musk, has for years publicly questioned the wisdom of calling over-the-air updates “recalls.”
EV sales rose another 76% in first quarter of 2022 even as sales of all new vehicles dropped by 15.7%.U.S.EV sales could be on the verge of far more growth, which would make over-the-air updates increasingly common. But drivers and investors are raising an array of safety concerns that could put the brakes on the EV market’s expansion. Serious problems have included electric vehicles failing to start, losing power and catching fire because of battery defects.
In some cases, Tesla has conducted overthe-air updates to resolve safety defects without notifying the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or Tesla owners that a recall was underway.Because that’s against the law, the agency has ordered Tesla to provide those details.
Tesla has used over-the-air updates to resolve, for example, issues with its windshield wipers and seat belt chimes. It has also used over-the-air updates to address problems with its partially automated driving systems. Those features are the subject of a government investigation because of a spate of crashes with parked emergency vehicles in which first responders were using warning signs, such as flashing lights or flares.

74 Today, more than a decade later, Clark has garnered 1.3 million Instagram followers, oversees nearly a dozen full-time employees, and Dae Hair, the beauty brand she launched in 2020, is the top-selling clean hair care line at Sephora. But while Clark, and an entire generation of first-wave Instagram influencers, have evolved their businesses from image makers to brand builders, the social media landscape has also continued to change—and these days she’s feeling a pressure to pivot.“It’s a shift right now, actually, and I’m spending most of my time on TikTok,” Clark tells Fast Company on a Zoom call from her home in Arizona. “Everyone is just shifting away from Instagram—I feel like if they don’t seriously change their algorithms back to what they were, Instagram is going to become obsolete, like Facebook.”
“At Dae, we’re investing in so many microinfluencers and UGC content that comes from people who may not have big followings. We just really love their points of view,” Clark says. “I love that evolution of social media—how relaxed it is now and how nothing is off-limits. I think brands are so creative now. Their customers are at their fingertips, which creates so many possibilities. It’s definitely more fun, for sure.”
How Instagram influencers become enterprises, and what happens next among most children and teenagers—and with pressure to accrue followers and win sponsorships with “brand-safe” content, for many years filtered and curated personas became the social media default.
“I spend most of my time on my businesses, not on social media,” Clark says. “The time I do spend on social media isn’t necessarily for making money. It’s so important for brand awareness and interacting with the community I’ve been building over the last decade.”Inthe nascent days of Instagram, which launched in 2010, hardly anyone could have predicted the platform’s future impact on the then-fledgling creator economy, which has since grown to an estimated value of $104 billion in 2022. Without the pressure of brand deals or monetization, early adopters were free to post candidly—and Clark attributes a great deal of her success to consistently publishing authentic content about her passions and interests. “I think it came from a very authentic place,” she says. “These really are my true hobbies and I’m sharing them with you. I think when someone is actually sharing what they’re passionate about and you can genuinely feel their passion, it’s contagious. I feel like I’ve always done what I love.” These days, an entirely new generation of creators (the term influencers is slowly fading out of fashion) embark on their careers with complete awareness of its lucrative potential. Since 2019, polls have shown that “YouTuber” is a top career of choice
Some of the most in-demand products in the 14SKU range—such as the vegan detangler and jumbosize shampoos and conditioners—have repeatedly sold out since arriving on store shelves.
Not that Clark relies on social media for income any longer. In 2016, she parlayed her love of hairstyling into the development of a hairextensions company, BFB Hair, and Dae Hair has been wildly popular since debuting two years ago.
Short-format videos deployed via TikTok’s algorithm, which prioritizes content over creators, has catalyzed a new, more-authentic era in the influencer economy. A lower barrier of entry also means more people are in the game—and data-driven engagement metrics show that audiences and consumers prefer real and gritty over preened and pristine. “There are so many people [on social media] now, it’s so saturated,” Clark says. But content also brings in audience eyeballs—and advertisers, including Clark’s companies, have flocked to new platforms to seek out new talent. “You don’t have to be as big in order to make money,” she says. “It’s much easier now to get paid for doing this.”
SOCIAL MEDIA CAPITALISM
By Danica Lo
By the time Amber Fillerup Clark landed a major profile in The Atlantic in 2017, the blogger and Instagrammer had already spent seven years at the top of her game. Clark launched her blog—which has since been renamed but at the time was called Barefoot Blonde—in 2010, and quickly rose to the top of the mommy blogger ecosystem.
Until, that is, TikTok happened.
And as the first wave of OG influencers transition to enterprise and become business owners, they’re turning around and investing marketing dollars in a new generation of social media content creators— because they know, firsthand, how authentic engagement can convert consumers.

By Stephanie Vozza teams spend too much time and energy resolving miscommunications.“Slack-splaining is indicative of larger communication challenges exacerbated by hybrid work and employees’ desire to be understood as intended,” says Hadzimuratovic. “Businesses can better support and empower employees by investing in tools that help them feel more confident in their communication and give them insights into how others might interpret their writing.” Choosing the Right Communication Tool Thomas suggests matching the message with the right platform. If you’re feeling a strong need to add emojis or extra punctuation, determine if a face-to-face method, such as live or recorded video that can preempt confusion.
“Finding the communication tools that fit your personal style as well as the needs of your team can help to avoid so many issues and make the workplace a more productive and enjoyable setting overall,” he says.
But you don’t have to ditch emojis, altogether, says Dalton, who says they do add context in written communication. “I believe they absolutely have a place in today’s digital workspaces,” she says. “Without the freedom to utilize these communicative shortcuts to convey meaning, employees may find themselves producing overly wordy emails and other messages to ensure that their meaning is understood at every level. But context matters. An overreliance on emojis in the place of actual content can come off as unprofessional, disingenuous, or even juvenile. It takes time and careful observation of cultural norms within teams and organizations to find that sweet spot where they’re truly useful.”

78 A survey by the communication platform Loom of more than 3,000 office workers found that 91% have had digital messages misunderstood or misinterpreted at work, and for 20%, the misinterpretation has caused them to get reprimanded, demoted, or even fired. “Language is inherently complex,” says Senka Hadzimuratovic, head of communications at AI grammar platform Grammarly. “That’s even more pronounced in a business setting where you’re constantly managing competing priorities, multiple stakeholders, and deadline pressures. When we account for the increasing complexities of asynchronous and remote work—and as we write more across more contexts—misunderstandings are bound to happen.” Remote work has only expanded the amount of written communication we have every day. Those quick face-to-face check-in conversations are now being done by email and Slack. Research from Grammarly and The Harris Poll found that employees spend nearly half of their workweek on written communication alone. “The shift to a more fragmented, dispersed workplace has exacerbated these challenges. As we work more asynchronously and across more channels and systems, this creates more opportunities for miscommunication,” says Hadzimuratovic. “While tools like collaboration platforms help with the ‘what’ of communication, ‘how’ we interact effectively in this landscape is much more challenging—and critical to address.” Dr. Betsy Dalton, assistant professor of communications for Middle Tennessee State University, says email, text, and Slack platforms are “lean” communication channels. “[They are] low on the types of nonverbal cues we use during in-person communication to convey meaning,” she says. “These cues include gestures, facial expressions, tone of voice, pitch, posture, eye contact, even timing.” In contrast, face-to-face conversations or video calls allow for more layers of meaning to be conveyed between and among parties. “Aspects of a message such as emotion, tone, sense of urgency, or sarcasm can be more easily conveyed in these communication-rich channels,” says Dalton. Are Emojis the Right Fix? Using lean channels removes context, and a simple question that was intended to mean one thing could be interpreted in a completely different way. To adjust, 47% of respondents said they ARE YOU SLACK-SPLAINING?
You probably are overthink emails and messages they send. To ward off a misunderstanding, they’re adding extra words, punctuation, and emojis to add context and clarify“Thetone.possibility for misinterpretation is always there especially when someone can’t see your facial expressions and the emotion attached to the statement,” says Loom CEO Joe Thomas, who uses the term “Slack-splaining” to describe the practice of overexplaining through digital written communications to ensure there isn’t a misunderstanding. “There is an impulse to add a smiley emoji, an exclamation point, or other positive visual stimuli to convey tone. This happens even more often at work when someone feels their livelihood is on the line.” Often, people Slack-splain out of fear instead of actual need. In the Loom survey, more than half of respondents say they’re constantly worried that they are going to type or say the wrong thing, and many find themselves thinking and rethinking what the intent of the sender was. Ninety-three percent felt the need to write multiple sentences to fully explain something, 82% have felt the need to use extra punctuation like multiple exclamation marks, and 77% have felt the need to use emojis.
“This is a critical indicator of work-life imbalance and leads to a higher possibility of workers getting burned out,” says Thomas. “We found that employees are stressing too much over their communication, and any added stress will take away from not just the work an employee can do, but an employee having a positive work experienceRereadingoverall.”oroverthinking email and instant messages is taking time and impacting productivity. The same is true of having to resolve confusion after a misunderstanding or miscommunication over a digital platform. In the Grammarly poll, 76% of business leaders agree that they and their

Using your iPhone in Light Mode uses a fair amount of power to keep the pixels on the screen illuminated. Dark Mode’s more subdued color scheme doesn’t have to work as hard. Running your phone in full-time Dark Mode can therefore cut down on battery usage. To enable it, head into Settings > Display & Brightness and choose Dark under the Appearance section. If you’re not quite ready to commit to full-time Dark Mode, you can toggle the Automatic setting here to have your phone switch to Dark Mode at a specific time of day, so see if that helps a bit first.
These these 3 iPhone features will maximize your battery life responsible for determining the amount of light around you and adjusting the screen brightness accordingly. It works well, but it can sap battery life throughout the day. You can turn this feature off by manually setting your iPhone to a moderate to low brightness setting, which keeps the phone’s backlight from constantly shifting. To do so, head into Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and toggle Auto Brightness off. You may find that you need to adjust the brightness manually if you’re outside. Swipe down from the top-right corner of your iPhone screen. This opens up Control Center, which features a manual brightness slider. Just make sure to manually adjust it back down to a lower level once you can. Disable 5G Are you really leveraging your iPhone’s super-fast

The record coral cover may still not sector has a dynamic coral cover record. In the late 1980s coral cover surpassed 40%, before dropping to a region-wide low of 12% in 2011 after Cyclone Hamish.
The region is currently experiencing outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish. And yet, coral cover in this area is still relatively high at 34%.
It provides no information about diversity, or the abundance and health of other animals and plants that live in and among the trees, or coral.
The results Overall, the long-term monitoring team found coral cover has increased on most reefs. The level of coral cover on reefs near Cape Grenville and Princess Charlotte Bay in the northern sector has bounced back from bleaching, with two reefs having more than 75% cover. In the central sector, where coral cover has historically been lower than in the north and south, coral cover is now at a region-wide high, at 33%.
Coral cover is a broad proxy metric that indicates habitat condition. It’s relatively easy data to collect and report on and is the most widely used monitoring metric on coral reefs.
Cautious optimism My study, published last year, examined 44 years of coral distribution records around Jiigurru, Lizard Island, at the northern end of the Great Barrier Reef.It suggested that 28 of 368 species of hard coral recorded at that location haven’t been seen for at least a decade, and are at risk of local extinction.LizardIsland is one location where coral cover has rapidly increased since the devastating 201617 bleaching event. Yet, there is still a real risk local extinctions of coral species have occurred.
In what seems like excellent news, coral cover in parts of the Great Barrier Reef is at a record high, according to new data from the Australian Institute of Marine Science. But this doesn’t necessarily mean our beloved reef is in good health.
The data are robust
THE GREAT BARRIER REEF IS BACK
Based on this robust data set, which shows increases in coral cover indicative of region-wide recovery, things must be looking up for the Great Barrier Reef – right? Are we being catfished by coral cover?
Inferring that a reef has recovered by a person being towed behind a boat to obtain a rapid visual estimate of coral cover is like flying in a helicopter and saying a bushfire-hit forest has recovered because the canopy has grown back.
Photo by Yanguang Lan on Unsplash.
82 In the north of the reef, coral cover usually fluctuates between 20% and 30%.
But in this instance, it’s more likely the reef is being dominated by only few species, as the report states that branching and plating Acropora species have driven the recovery of coral cover. Acropora coral are renowned for a “boom and bust” life cycle. However, these same corals are often susceptible to wave damage, disease or coral bleaching and tend to go bust within a few years.

The finding of high coral cover may signify a reef in good condition, and an increase in coral cover after disturbance may signify a recovering reef.
In the Australian Institute of Marine Science’s report, reef recovery relates solely to an increase in coral cover, so let’s unpack this term.

Use Silence in Meetings
tyranny of the fastest and loudest,” Zorn says. “Giving space allows for reflection and allows for the quieter voices on the teams and groups to come in.”
Use Silence During Conflict Silence is also a force that can equilibrate anger or tension at work. If people are getting agitated during a meeting, the authors suggest asking for a period of collective silence. The silent pause can help people center and calm themselves before“Silenceproceeding.isn’t forcing a resolution before the group is ready,” Zorn explains. “It’s simply ensuring that people are present and listening. The group silence forces everyone into a place where they have to drop their verbalized positions and arguments and connect to the underlying energy of the shared space.” Whether it’s during a meeting, a disagreement, or a deep work session, sitting in silence can take courage because it’s uncomfortable.
“We need to be able to be quiet together,” Zorn says. “The experience and power of silence is magnified when it’s shared.”
Ma can be physical, such as having empty spaces in buildings that provide a sense of calm and clarity. And Ma can mean adding space into your day, such as leaving free time between meetings instead of scheduling things back-toback. Or it can be blocking off time for deep, thoughtful work.
While brainstorming sessions are usually filled with noise, they also offer a perfect opportunity to introduce silence. Zorn suggests adding a minute or two of quiet during the meeting, allowing employees to think before sharing ideas.Or create a silent brainstorming session with a Post-it note gallery where people write down their ideas and post them on a wall. Then, participants can slowly peruse ideas and vote for the best one. Silent brainstorming sessions offer new opportunities for intelligence to arrive or be uncovered, which can be especially beneficial to employees who are more introverted.

THE POWER OF SILENCE
“Normally, brainstorming deals with the By Stephanie Vozza Silence may be golden, but it’s also awkward. In our noisy world, long quiet pauses prompt many of us to jump in and fill the void. Instead of fearing silence, though, Justin Zorn and Leigh Marz, authors of Golden: The Power of Silence in a World of Noise, suggest embracing it.
Establish Norms Ironically, finding comfort with silence in the workplace starts with more conversation. “It’s a look at your norms,” Zorn explains. “How do we treat noisy distractions as a group as we operate? Often, there’s an expectation of constant interruption, whether it’s email interruptions [or] notifications. Open office plans often compound these issues.” The authors suggest trying an ancient Japanese aesthetic principle called Ma. “Ma means empty, negative space,” Zorn says. “Ma also means pure potentiality. On the job, that
How to become more comfortable with awkward silence at work would mean having reverence for open spaces, honoring them and building them in.”
Whether88 we’re talking about auditory noise that decibels in our ears or informational noise from a mass proliferation of information that’s available to us, noise begets more noise,” Marz says. “And then there’s internal chatter, worry, rumination, concern, and planning for the future. We mistake this stress and noise for aliveness.” In a 2014 study at the University of Virginia, undergraduates were left alone in a sparse room and without cellphones or entertainment for 15 minutes. They were given the option to sit in silence or push a button that administers a painful electric shock. Two-thirds of the men and 25% of the women chose to give themselves a shock as a form of stimulation rather than just sit in silence with nothing to do. “Awkward silence is a real issue for people,” Zorn says. “When you’re face-to-face with another person or with a group of people, you face what Nietzsche called the horror of the vacuum of space with nothing to say.” Zorn and Marz point out that our entire economic system is wired toward maximum noise. “It’s the way we measure GDP,” Zorn says. “A pristine forest doesn’t count as anything for GDP, unless you chop it down and sell the wood for lumber at Home Depot. You can say the same thing about human attention. Moments of quiet, pristine awareness, such as a walk in the woods or time with your kids making or appreciating art doesn’t count as a positive for GDP. Our society and our communal lives are wired for as much noise as possible.” But silence doesn’t have to be a solemn and solitary activity, according to Marz, who notes, “We as a society have used silence and honored silence in ceremonies, milestones, and cultural events. We want to welcome that back into the foreground of our way of being together.”
90 “I think the numbers come out to about 10 new air conditioners every second for the next 30 years,” says Jack Alvarenga, a research scientist at Harvard University’s Wyss Institute, and part of a team working on redesigning how homes can be cooled. “That’s an unbelievable number. Just to fathom the amount of cooling demand that’s about to come online in the next couple of decades is concerning.” The problem is significant both because of the amount of energy that air conditioners require and the fact that current refrigerants, the chemicals that absorb the heat in your AC, are also potent greenhouse gases. (Thanks to the global Kigali Agreement, the worst refrigerants are being phased out, but that will take time.) The more AC is used, the hotter it will get outside. Then people need to use even more air-conditioning, and the cycle continues.
been retrofitted with technology to make it as efficient as possible. The team hasn’t crunched all of the data yet but says the technology shows promise for widespread use. “We’re cooling at a much higher efficiency than a typical AC unit, we’re able to achieve a cool temperature, and we’re able to do all that using less water than standards ask for,” says Grinham.
The technology still needs development beyond the initial prototype, and the team will have to show that it can meet certain performance requirements of the manufacturers that might eventually bring it to market. Consumers might have toalso think differently about how they expect air-conditioning to work since this type of device isn’t a dehumidifier. But because it uses so much less energy and is cheaper to make, it could be ideally suited for areas where electricity is expensive and customers can afford a standard air conditioner. “We need to find the right market, the right consumer,” he says.
In China, a searing heat wave has lasted for more than two months, and the power grid is straining as people crank up their air-conditioning. The country is one of the places where AC use has been growing the fastest, with a five-fold jump between 2000 and 2017. But as the planet keeps getting hotter, and more people around the world are able to afford air-conditioning, its use is growing everywhere. By the middle of the century, there are likely to be about 5.6 billion of the appliances, and nearly triple the energy demand of cooling today.
Other researchers and startups are also developing better alternatives to standard airconditioning. That includes efficient heat pumps—
which exist now and can get incentives for consumers from the Inflation Reduction Act. Other new features include sensors that allow the device to let in outdoor air when it gets cooler, or connect directly to solar panels to avoid putting a strain on the electrical grid. At Harvard’s HouseZero, a geothermal heat pump keeps the house cool on days when it isn’t testing the new technology, and the windows are also designed to automatically open when the temperature drops at night. Other tweaks to building design can also help—from ultrawhite paint that reflects sunlight to passive designs that strategically choose where to place windows and add shade.
At Harvard, a multidisciplinary team is working on a design for a new type of air-conditioning that uses a fraction of the energy, and uses water instead of ultra-polluting refrigerants. Called ColdSNAP (SNAP stands for “superhydrophobic nano-architecture process”), it incorporates a unique coating also developed at the university. “A lot of innovative materials are kind of products that want a problem,” says Jonathan Grinham, an architecture professor at the university’s Graduate School of Design and one of the partners on the project. “We call it a technology push. . . . Okay, I have something that has super-unique behavior. So how does it benefit society? Where do we apply this type of technology?”
By Adele Peters
Harvard researchers designed a cheaper, more efficient air conditioner
In this case, the coating repels liquids, inspired by the way duck feathers stay dry. The team realized that if it selectively applied this coating to certain places on ceramic—a material that naturally absorbs moisture—they could use it in a new type of evaporative cooler. Sometimes called swamp coolers, the devices usually only work in dry climates. The basic concept is simple: If you put hot air in contact with water, the water absorbs heat as it evaporates. It uses 75% less energy than typical air conditioners. But the process of evaporative cooling also creates humidity, and so doesn’t work well in, say, Florida. In the new device, when water evaporates to cool the air, a heatexchange component made with the coating traps the humidity, and the air flowing into the room is moreThiscomfortable.month, the researchers started testing it on humid, hot days in the Boston area, at Harvard’s experimental HouseZero, an old house that’s BE COOL

Next, it’s important to be clear in your feedback and don’t leave anything up to interpretation or speak obscurely.“When employees are left to their own devices . . . their thoughts can go to a negative place,” says McDonald.Thisisdoubly true when you’re delivering negative feedback. Otherwise workers may get things mixed up or not get the message. In the latter case, this may mean you have to reiterate and rephrase your comments, and you risk surprising your employee.
EFFECTIVE FEEDBACK How to do it
Set aside enough time to talk When delivering feedback, it’s important you’re not being inconsiderate or flip with your delivery. In order to get your message across successfully and with care, you need to block enough time on your schedule and avoid distractions. “[Show] an empathetic side,” says McDonald.
Build from a foundation of trust To properly deliver feedback, your employees must feel an underlying sense of trust has been established. This sort of strong relationship does not arise over night; instead it will take time to ensure your connection is authentic.
As a person delivering feedback, you can build trust by talking to your employees regularly. Paul McDonald, a senior director at staffing company Robert Half, has managed different groups throughout his career and currently oversees the mentorship and collaboration of a team of 15 to 20 individuals. McDonald says he speaks to his workers openly and often. Frequent and predictably-timed communication makes for a more fluid exchange between himself and his reports, no matter whether the conversation is positive or negative. “Regular communication builds trust,” he says. “When employees trust me, I’ve found that [we] can look at areas of opportunity because they know my style and . . . the way the meeting cadence is going to take place.” Effective communicators know that they should be aware of how they speak—including the tone they use. If you are too overzealous, your reports will no longer be receptive to what you’re telling them. Moreover, if managers’ written communication is not working, they must be willing to adjust.
Be mindful of your criticism frequency It’s important not to always point out the negative when you’re a leader. Yes, as a manager it feels natural to constantly want to improve and ask your reports to do more. But inevitably, this tendency can lead to an employee impression that you’re never satisfied.
The worst case scenario for a company is “safe silence” from employees, wrote David Dye and Karin Hurt, whose book Courageous Cultures was featured in Fast Company. Safe silence is when workers, instead of speaking their minds and countering their bosses’ potentially flawed viewpoints, choose to say nothing.
Further, the best way to make sure your employee received your message is follow up. McDonald shares that he often tries his best to follow up in the medium his employees prefer the most. When delivering negative feedback, he will call a second meeting, when the employee is “feeling better emotionally,” he says. “That’s where I back it up with writing, [like] email. They have specific instructions, goals, and tactics…in order to get to the next level.”
There’s a risk to providing too much feedback, according to some research—especially if it’s not delivered carefully. And research shows that people can grow the most when their strengths are recognized. So how should managers deliver information in a way that leads to signs of real change without deflating workers? Consider a few of these strategies:
By Diana Shi
As Fast Company cofounder Bill Taylor wrote in Harvard Business Review a decade ago, “Leaders who engage in relentless fault-finding can’t help but lead to a culture of bloodless execution. [Those] who celebrate small acts of kindness . . . who reward moments of connection give everyone permission to look for opportunities to have a genuine human aspect.”
Photo by Jon Tyson on Unsplash.
People remember the tough, traumatic times more than the good. Research has shown there is a residual effect to hearing negative comments repeatedly. Employees who received a negative email from an employer one time, often anticipated that future emails would be similarly distressing (in other words, feeling anticipatory stress or “vigilance of threat”). If you make yourself out to be the bearer of bad news and bad feelings one time, your staff may anticipate future interactions to be similarly negative.
92 But feedback is often necessary in order for an individual (or team) to make progress. Without good, frequent feedback from managers, employees are unlikely to improve on their own. Or at least, it is likely improvement will take longer.
Receiving feedback can be scary. And of course, it’s worse when you know the feedback is going to be negative. The experience can make you feel called out, inferior to your coworkers, or incompetent at your job.
With tough conversations, it’s key to get through to your conversation partner and not inundate them with negativity—or you risk them becoming “blocked,” as McDonald phrases it.
Deliver your words directly
“If you think bad things are going to happening, and then [bad] things do happen, that stress gets enunciated, [you will feel] a more pronounced reaction to it,” says Brooks Gump, a professor at Syracuse University who has researched people’s reactions to stress. It’s not to say you should never give negative feedback, but make sure that you’re also finding instances to complement work that is well done.

Robotic96scientists at Rice University observed precisely this phenomenon in their hallway, soon after opening the Preston Innovation Lab in 2019. There, they were already concerned with soft robotics—the use of soft materials like hydrogels and textiles, instead of typically hard substances like plastics and metals—but they weren’t expecting spiders to end up as one such material. Now, they’ve developed a mechanism where a dead spider can become a ready-to-use gripping tool for small and delicate objects of up to 1.3 times their body weight. They’re able to manually contract and expand their legs with air pressure, and the scientists predict the tiny, claw machines could have broader applications.
If you happened to find a dead spider somewhere around your home—no questions or judgments about how the critter met its end, of course—you might notice it curled up, with its eight legs no longer spread wide, but crumpled together into a ball. and euthanizing masses of spiders. And they’ll have to deduce (somewhat paradoxically) the lifespan of a dead spider. In these early trials, they found that after about 1,000 clutches, the tools lost some effectiveness, but they believe that could be could improved simply by applying a polymeric coating to the carcass to keep it hydrated. Other critters with similar hydraulic biologies could also prove useful. The researchers mention the patu digua, an arachnid with the Guinness World Record for smallest spider, at about a fifth the size of a pinhead, for “microscale manipulation.” Meanwhile, the small whip scorpion (also known as a vinegarroon, due to the acidic mix with which it sprays prey) could take even less time to react to the air pressure than the spiders. “We hope to push that limit even further,” Yap says.
The pneumatic force extended the legs, achieving full motion in less than a second. In the lab, the new grippers were made to lift and move a variety of objects. But unlike the pesky arcade claw machines that take your change and never latch onto toys, the spiders were actually effective. They moved items around a circuit board to power an LED; grasped both brittle objects and a foam block 2.6 times larger than themselves; and even picked up other spiders. They also note that the fine hairs on the spiders’ legs probably provide some extra grip. Particularly, they found that smaller spiders could lift more relative to their body weights than larger ones, predicting that an even lighter species would lift two times their body weight. While that may sound minuscule, the mechanisms could have real-world
“The spiders’ innate architecture can be hydraulically actuated,” says Faye Yap, one of the researchers and co-authors of the study. It’s made possible because spiders’ limbs move via hydraulic pressure from their blood. When a chamber near their heads contracts, blood rushes to their flexor muscles and forces them to extend their legs. That’s different from mammals, whose muscles work in pairs; as our biceps contract, our triceps extend, and vice versa. “We thought that this mechanism was really interesting, and we wanted to leverage that,” Yap Wolfsays.spiders were used in the lab; they’re half an inch to two inches in size and are agile hunters. (They do so without webs, but by jumping on prey, holding them between their legs, then injecting them with venom.) The team procured the spiders in mass from a biology supply center, and euthanized them by freezing them at 25 degrees Fahrenheit for about a week. Then, they threaded a needle through the corpse’s hydraulic chamber, and glued it into place, with a syringe on the other end held by the researchers. To operate the spider bots, they pushed the syringe and forced air pressure into the bodies.
ROBOSPIDERS
These dead spiders have been transformed into tiny robots applications in lifting tiny, fragile objects, especially ones with irregular geometries. They could be used in the field to pick up insects for experiments without damaging them. They could manipulate small objects in tiny electrical circuits, participating in microelectronic assembly. At scale, on an assembly line, a number of the critters would likely be attached to a robotic arm, with an air pressure line to extend all the littleThegrippers.study marks the creation of a brand-new field, which the researchers christened “necrobotics”— literally, death and robots—whereby biotic materials from once-living organisms are used as robotic components. The field fits in with the lab’s focus on soft robotics, which are often safer than hard automatons. (Recently, for instance, a hard chessplaying robot in Moscow broke a 7-year-old’s finger.) There’s some further work to be done. At scale, they’ll have to grapple with the ethics around sourcing

TSCK’S Sand Tiger shark conservation efforts mark a new international achievement for Kuwait’s beloved destination. By bazaar staff If you’ve spent any time at all over the years in The Scientific Center (TSCK), one of the centers of Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) and opened in 2000, you may very well have seen various members of an impressive group of Sand Tiger Sharks, gliding gracefully through the Mijbil Al Mutawa Aquarium. One of these is Bibi, estimated to be over twenty years old and very excitingly, now a mother of two!
IT’S SO RARE BUT IT HAPPENED AT TSCK! MEET TSCK NEWEST BORN SHARKS BADER AND BADRIYA

101
The siblings are named Bader and Badriya, after a poll to choose names on @scicenterkw the popular Instagram account of TSCK. The two pups, one boy and one girl, were born on January 24th, 2022 in regal fashion - as they were in the presence of a number of representatives of major institutions, entities and key figures in the world of environmental sciences, preservation, biodiversity andDr.sustainability.SalemAl-Ablani, a biologist and a former member of the TSCK Board of Directors, elaborates that over 22 years, The Scientific Center was able to provide and maintain a suitable environment for Sand Tiger Sharks which enabled them to reproduce naturally and continuously without any artificial interference. Scientific studies also tell us that specifically this type of shark is particularly
[Continued...]
It cannot be stressed enough how much of a significant global scientific achievement this is, as successful breeding of the endangered Sand Tiger Sharks with surviving pups is rare indeed, and is testimony to the great care taken of the newborns.
The TSCK Marine and Wildlife Department have put together a carefully mapped out strategy to ensure the youngsters’ continued health and wellbeing. The skilled aquarium team makes sure the plan is executed to the letter, and, it’s working!
[...Continued]
Dr. Al-Ablani further confirms that, “The biggest challenge for The Scientific Center was to safeguard the lives of the young sharks after their birth, as the fact is that Sand Tiger Shark babies need extreme care to be able to survive. Therefore, we find it very difficult to reproduce this breed of sharks…the survival of this type of shark is considered rare, and very successful models are few and far between.” Once the hurdle of a healthy birth is cleared the team have no time to rest on their laurels. Led by Global Consultant Andrew Clarke, the aquarium team rushed the three-feet long youngsters out of the main tank and into nursery ponds to keep them safe. Here Bader and Badriya were closely monitored, the strategy exactingly followed, giving the best care to the newborns and ensuring their proper growth. The team even measured out perfectly how much food the pups were being fed and when they should feed them. This continues today as TSCK’s specialized staff still carefully weighs the amount of food the youngsters are fed. This allows the tracking of how much Bader and Badriya consume, and this information is used to determine the baby sharks’ growth rates.
102 sensitive to various stressors such as crowding, diet, and water temperature, and as such is one of the rarest species that breeds in aquariums.
Due to the multitude of factors that make up an aquarium environment, is it extremely challenging to maintain the shark’s pregnancy gestation period of twelve to fourteen months, highlighting once again that it is the excellent conditions that characterize TSCK’s aquarium’s environment which has resulted in the successful birth of two baby sharks. The birth of healthy youngsters also indicates that the nutritional value of the sharks’ diet is very high, which reflects very positively on the excellent breeding practices of the Marine and Wildlife Department staff and their expertise, not to mention the excellent management of The Scientific Center.
Dr. Al-Albani emphasizes that, “We also collect morphometric measurements (weight and height) monthly,” continuing, “These sharks have great ecological importance and value in maintaining the marine bio-balance, as well as scientific value in terms of what they mean for the field of scientific research. With this information, we will learn more about Sand Tiger Sharks, and will help other facilities around the world that struggle to breed and nurture them. We can also use this information to better understand their natural history, and help provide vital information about some of the environmental threats to which these animal populations are exposed to in nature - such as poaching, by catch, and other threats, which are thankfully in decline. Our daily observations also give us insight into their natural and reactive behaviors.”RanaAl-Nibari, TSCK’s General Manager, reiterates that, “Our success in breeding Sand Tiger Sharks is attributable to our high-quality facilities, the experience of our specialized staff and our world class consultants.” This is all evidently a truism, but it does not describe the emotion generated when viewing the occupants of the aquarium. No matter one’s opinion on aquariums in general, there is an awe that comes over one when observing these incredible, other worldly creatures, including the Sand Tiger Sharks swimming in the waters, that cannot be denied. bazaar got the chance to take an up-close look at Bader and Badriya – well, we nearly pressed our noses up against the glass like the other kids being held back by guardians, and these sharks are perfection. As they slowly swim by you can see smatterings of tea-stained brown spots on grey sharkskin, which itself is evocative of brushed nubuck leather, like the finish you’ll see on desert boots. Fitting. As he meanders through, you can see that Bader has already had a couple of runins, no doubt going through Tuckman’s “storming” phase as he settles into tank life and finds his place within the hierarchy. It looks like these two will have a few adventurous tales as they grow and continue to provide TSCK with vital information on Sand Tiger Sharks, healthy and well-cared for. Al-Nibari adds, “We are pleased to share our experience with all aquarium centers in the world to help contribute to saving these sharks from extinction and ensure their populations sustainability. We also hope to continue to produce later generations of them in The Scientific Center’s Aquarium.” For tickets to experience the Mijbil Al Mutawa Aquarium, Discovery Place, IMAX, Gift Shops, Restaurants and so much more, visit tsck.org, and follow the Instagram account @scicenterkw for TSCK updates.

In some ways, the basic format of the shoe hasn’t changed much throughout human history.
THE LONG HISTORY OF HEELS
This Boot Was Not Made For Walking
The oldest known leather shoe, a moccasin found in Armenia that’s 5,500 years old, was made from a single piece of tanned cowhide, with laces along the seams in the front and back. Archaeologists say the shoe was designed to help people walk long distances over rugged terrain, protecting the foot from the cold, as well as from stones and prickly bushes. “It is astonishing how much this shoe resembles a modern shoe!” Manolo Blahnik, the luxury shoe designer, remarked to National Geographic, when the shoe was first discovered in 2010. But there’s one big difference between ancient shoes and those designed over the last millennia, points out the museum’s director Valerie Steele, cocurator of the exhibition. Over time, shoemakers have prioritized fashion over function, which means they stopped designing the shoes to be comfortable or to facilitate walking.

Called Shoes: Anatomy, Identity, Magic, the exhibit reveals that our relationship with footwear goes well beyond the physical, performing social and psychological functions as well. The exhibition features more than 300 pairs of shoes, boots, and sneakers from the MFIT permanent collection and spans nearly 500 years of fashion history. But heels, in particular, stand out as a shoe that’s poorly designed for movement, but very important to social acceptance. And the exhibit reveals how, for the first time in history, we’re rejecting the heel as a symbol of gender or class.
The most obvious example of this is high heels, which generally make it harder, not easier, to walk. Heels were first invented in Persia in the 10th century, and they were originally designed for men. “Wealthy men wore them to give them additional height, and when they rode on horseback, the heels clicked into the stirrups,” says Steele. “But when Persian royalty traveled to the French courts in the 17th century, they brought the trend with them, and soon heels were widespread among men in European courts.” Consider the oldest piece in the collection, a man’s shoe from 1640s Europe. It features a red
An upcoming exhibition at The Museum at FIT, located on the New York City campus of the Fashion Institute of Technology, makes my point.
And this has, in turn, changed how humans stand and move, as well as how mobile they are.
From a symbol of men’s power to women’s burden
When I brought my newborn home from the hospital, I picked out a special outfit for her, including tiny leather moccasins. My husband thought the shoes were a little silly, given that she wouldn’t be able to walk for a year. But that was beside the point: Most shoes that carry us through life aren’t designed for walking at all. [Continued...]

106 painted heel and cutouts that expose the top of the foot. The shoe was likely made for a courtier, allowing him to feel taller and more powerful, and to signal his social standing. And indeed, heels have always been a status symbol, Steele says, because they reflect that the wearer doesn’t need to perform hard labor or walk where they need to go.Steele says that wealthy women in the courts began wearing heeled shoes to achieve some of the social benefits they accrued. However, women’s shoes had taller, thinner heels than those of their male counterparts. Steele says this is likely because people thought they made women’s feet and bodies look more feminine. The heels changed a woman’s silhouette, which some men found alluring, so they became associated with women’s sexuality. “Women’s bodies have always been sexualized, and heels began to be associated with female eroticism,” she says. “This is when men abandoned the heel for more practical flat boots, but women continued to wear them.”By the 1800s, women of all social classes wore heels. Steele says that it’s a myth that heels and corsets were only worn by women of the upper classes; even those who were poor, working in fields or as housemaids, felt pressure to wear heels to show that they were women, too. And yet the heels were often an impediment, making it harder for them to move comfortably. One highheeled boot from 1895 perfectly illustrates this. It’s made by the British shoemaker Jack Jacobus, in its Austrian factory, and features a pointed toe and skinny heel, that look quite elegant if not particularly comfortable.
Comfort and ergonomics are now the key considerations when it comes to shoes, which is why sneakers are now the most popular shoe on the market for both genders, and Nike is the most valuable company in the world. Many of the most popular shoe startups in recent years—like Allbirds and Birdies—have focused on designing shoes that support the foot and the body. And many designers now create high-end versions of sneakers that are both wearable and fashion forward, including Balenciaga and Yeezy. “You see women wearing sneakers on the red carpet now,” Steele says. “For decades, heels were the only option.”But the symbolic power of the heel hasn’t disappeared. Designers continue to create elaborate, fantastical high heels, and consumers continue to snap them up. Steele says that there’s a mythology in Western culture about the magical power of shoes, like Cinderella’s glass slipper, which still today tends to manifest itself in high heels. “There’s this idea that the right pair of fabulous high heels will transform your life,” Steele says. “They will get you a job or help you find a partner. The difference is that wearing high heels is now a choice, not a social obligation.”

[...Continued]
The Persistence of The Heel In many ways, it’s strange that women’s heels have persisted into the 21st century, given how uncomfortable they are. But as the exhibition demonstrates, heels have dominated women’s fashion over the last century. Some of the most famous shoe designers of our time—Roger Vivier, Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik, Louis Vuitton, and Alexander McQueen—all specialize in very high heels. One recently acquired pair by Maison Martin Margiela are eight inches tall. Another, from Christian Louboutin, combines an extremely high heel with a ballerina pointe upper, making it almost impossible to walk in. While these are examples of high fashion, heeled shoes were also ubiquitous in everyday shoes in the 20th century. And while doctors have pointed out that heels are not just uncomfortable, but can even permanently damage the foot, many women felt pressure to wear them to work and to events, much like women did in the 18th and 19th centuries. As recently as 2017, PricewaterhouseCoopers mandated that women wear heels to work, prompting one employee to petition the British government to make it illegal to include heels in a dress code. Meanwhile, men’s shoes become increasingly more comfortable. In the 19th century, the Oxford, which features a leather upper that can be laced and a sole that provides support, became popular and still remains the standard for men’s formal footwear. And in the 20th century, men started wearing sports shoes out of tennis and basketball courts and into everyday life—and even with formal wear. Sneakers, which are designed to optimize movement and comfort, are now the most common men’s shoes around the Overworld.the past few decades, in a radical departure from previous centuries, men’s and women’s footwear styles have been dovetailing. This is part of a broader change in the years after World War II, of women wearing trousers, suits, jeans, and other garments traditionally associated with men. And while there are places where women sometimes still feel the need to wear heels, like formal offices and black-tie events, most choose not to wear them everyday.

3 reasons concrete doesn’t live up to its environmental claims
First, while concrete’s thermal mass does indeed allow it to act as a store of heat, or “coolth,” this is likely to do little to reduce the carbon emissions from heating buildings. Concrete’s capacity to absorb heat is instead more likely to necessitate an increase in heating energy use, since the concrete needs to be heated as well as the room space. This can be illustrated by considering stone-built churches, which give testament to the challenges of heating buildings with high thermal mass. It is true that the use of exposed concrete may reduce the need for cooling, particularly in deep plan office buildings. However, in relatively cool climates such as the U.K., cooling still uses only a fraction of the energy of What’sheating.more, cooling is predominantly powered by the national electricity grid, which is rapidly being decarbonized. Our research shows that the calculations for using construction materials that take lots of carbon to make, in order to save decreasing amounts of future operational carbon, just don’t add up.
Absorbing heat won’t cut heating use
Is the tide changing? During 2021-22, the U.K. government’s Environmental Audit Committee held an inquiry into the sustainability of the U.K.’s built environment. In their response to the inquiry, the MPA again repeated its claims of thermal mass, durability, and carbonation. However, the report on the outcome of the inquiry does not repeat these claims. Instead, it encourages the increased use of lower-carbon materials such as timber, and calls for the measurement of the whole-life carbon of buildings to be included in regulations. Alongside the recent introduction of such regulations in several European countries, this should support a move away from high-carbon materials. The accurate measurement and genuine reduction of carbon, both as embodied in the materials and resulting from the operation of a building, are essential to reducing our impact on the environment.
Photo by uve sanchez on Unsplash.
If concrete rubble is left exposed to air, it will slowly reabsorb a proportion of the carbon dioxide emissions that were emitted in its original manufacture. This is more correctly understood as “partial re-carbonation” and scarcely represents a good argument for using additional high-carbon concrete in new buildings.
There is also little evidence to suggest that concrete buildings are more durable than others.
IS IT TIME TO LET GO OF CONCRETE?
Up to 8% of all global anthropogenic human-made emissions are due to just one material—cement. And our use of it is rising.
Meanwhile, millions of ancient buildings around the world constructed of timber, as well as brick and stone, suggest that other building materials can be highly durable. Concrete buildings don’t absorb much carbon Finally, the ability of concrete to absorb carbon is typically oversold. Only the exposed surface of concrete will carbonate. So concrete situated underground, or hidden under coatings or cladding, will not act as a carbon sink. Reinforced concrete is also designed to minimize carbonation, as this leaves the steel reinforcement vulnerable to rusting.
108 The cement and concrete industry is encouraging this use, for example, by claiming that using concrete will reduce the “whole life” carbon emissions from buildings.
Carbonation therefore occurs mainly after the end of life of the building, once the concrete is crushed.
The second claim is that concrete is more durable than other materials, and that therefore concrete buildings will last longer, reducing the need to build new. The third is based on the ability of concrete to undergo carbonation, in which carbon dioxide is slowly absorbed from the atmosphere. This means that concrete can be seen as a “carbon sink,”and so is a sustainable choice. These messages, among others, are promoted by the Mineral Products Association (MPA), the U.K.’s trade association, through their technical guidance and their sector roadmap to “beyond net zero.” Similar messages have been repeated by the European concrete industry. Our research reveals a very different picture.
The number of exposed concrete buildings and structures that have “concrete cancer,” in which the steel reinforcement bars have started to rust and degrade and the concrete to break, suggest rather the opposite.
The absence of regulations to measure this has allowed such claims to play an important role in persuading designers and specifiers to use certain products. However, research conducted by my colleagues and me shows that these claims are often, at the least, exaggerated. We identified the use of three such claims. First is the claim that because concrete has a high thermal mass, which allows it to act as a heat store, it will reduce the carbon emissions from heating and cooling a building during its life.
By Alice Moncaster
The second argument, durability, is similarly flawed. Our research found that few buildings are demolished because they have reached structural obsolescence. Instead, they are destroyed to make way for “regeneration” in areas that are economically booming.
Buildings are replaced before they need to be

114 While it’s possible for renters to subscribe to community solar projects to offset their energy use, a startup in Berlin has a different approach.
If you live in an apartment, you probably don’t have solar power. You obviously don’t own your building’s roof, and since tenants typically pay their own electric bills, property owners wouldn’t get the cost-saving incentive that comes with installing solar panels.
The company, We Do Solar, has a small kit of eight photovoltaic panels that tenants can attach to a balcony to begin powering their devices directly. The founders wanted to “make solar power into something accessible, a product that anyone can use, no matter whether they rent or own their place of residence,” says cofounder and CEO Karolina Attspodina.Thekit, which recently started rolling out in Germany, provides 600 watts of power, the maximum that local regulations allow if solar panels are installed by a consumer. The company didn’t want users to have to hire an electrician or other professionals. The panels are designed to be lightweight and easy to clip onto a balcony railing with a single cable that comes out of the modules to plug into a wall socket. A small inverter converts the power to make it usable in plugs throughout the Inapartment.anaverage household, our solution, working at full production capacity, can reduce the electricity bills by up to 25% and save up to 600 kilograms of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to the ‘work’ of a 1,000-square-meter forest,” says Attspodina (that’s nearly 11,000 square feet). An app tracks how much solar power has been produced and also shows consumers their CO2 savings in real time. Any power not used by the apartment flows back into the grid, though later the company plans to offer a battery to store extra power. As energy prices surged in Europe because of the Russian invasion, We Do Solar, which started selling its panels in February, saw rapid growth. “After the start of the war, we saw our orders increase by 70%,” says Attspodina. “And there was a huge panic among people who were trying to secure grid independence, both because they wanted to cut their dependence on Russian gas and [because they were] worried of the coming cold winter and potentially not having enough energy.”

The startup had expected that it might have 3,000 customers within the first year, but it saw nearly that much demand within the first month. The kit costs 1,299 euros (roughly $1,320) and is also offered as a free rental to electric car owners, who can exchange the carbon credits they earn for using EVs in Germany. The company also plans to work with companies that can buy the panels as a corporate perk for employees. It will later offer a monthly rental option for people who

don’t want to commit to buying the panels, though Attspodina says that they’re easy to move. “Since the panels are super lightweight, it is very easy to dismantle them, move between places, and attach them to a new balcony,” she says. Although the company is focused on the European market now, it plans to eventually expand to other parts of the world.Attspodina recently installed her own kit on her fifth-floor apartment balcony in Berlin. “I have not yet received my new electricity bill, but I can tell you that I have already saved around 35 kilograms of CO2 emissions so far, which gives me a great feeling that I’m doing something to fight climate change,” she says. The need to do more is painfully obvious. “Right now, I am sitting in Berlin with a record temperature of 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), which is totally abnormal.”

Typically, it’s fairly clear when the economy hits a downturn: Most economic indicators point in the same direction. For the past six months, though, different economic indicators have been pointing in dramatically different directions. In fact, they’re so different that the debate over whether we’re in a recession obscures how strange the economy has beenTake, behaving.forinstance, that simple measure of a recession: negative GDP growth over two quarters.
118 It might seem surprising that whether we’re in a recession is something people are arguing over, but that’s the inevitable result of two factors. First, there is no single definition of the term “recession.” The definition Fox Business cited—two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth—is commonly used, but it’s not actually the “technical” definition, but rather a colloquial one that was coined by an economist named Julius Shiskin in 1974 in a piece published in The New York Times. The closest thing to an official definition is the one used by the Business Cycle Dating Committee of the National Bureau of Economic Research: “a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales.” But that requires subjective judgments—what constitutes “significant” and “across the economy”? Those aren’t always easy to make in the moment, which is why the NBER typically waits many months to make a pronouncement.Theotherreason people can plausibly disagree about whether we’re in a recession is that the economy is in a profoundly weird place today, thanks in large part to the legacy and continued ripple effects of the pandemic (and the government stimulus policies put in place to help deal with it).
The reality is that, at the moment, we don’t even know if the economy really did shrink over the first half of the year. Government GDP estimates are regularly revised, which is one reason the NBER waits before making any determination. And the data in the first quarter in particular was peculiar: While gross domestic product (the value of everything Americans, including corporations, produced) fell, gross domestic income (the value of everything Americans, including corporations, earned) rose.
Regardless, even if GDP growth was negative in the first two quarters, it’s hard to argue that over that period we saw the “significant decline in economic activity” that the NBER looks for. Recessions usually see consumers pull back sharply on spending, and businesses cut back on hiring and start laying people off. But the U.S. economy added roughly 2.7 million jobs in the first half of the year, almost 400,000 jobs a month on Consumeraverage.spending continued to rise, even adjusted for inflation, and is now roughly back on trend with what it was pre-pandemic. Business investment has not taken a big hit. And while certain industries are now struggling–most obviously housing and retailers that made big bets on pandemic-era trends continuing–service industries, including most obviously travel businesses, are thriving. American consumers are unhappy, but are spending freely on air travel, hotels, and entertainment. And while retail spending has slowed, foot traffic in malls continued to rise year-over-year throughout the first six months of 2022.
Those numbers sometimes diverge, but the gap in
The truth is that there is no really good historical analogy to what we’ve seen over the past six months. If anything, it feels a bit like the inverse of what we saw in early 2001, in the wake of the bursting of the tech bubble. Then, the U.S. economy didn’t actually have two quarters of negative economic growth. Yet the NBER nonetheless declared it a mild recession, because the decline in economic activity, including job losses, felt significant and widespread. Today, by contrast, even though economic growth may have shrunk mildly, the decline in overall economic activity has been hard to see. That all makes the use of the term “recession” feel beside the point, if not outright misleading. In a sense, it makes what we’re going through seem more normal than it actually is.
quarter was unusually large, and the fact that it was so big means it would not be surprising that as the data is revised, we’ll find that GDP actually rose.
With the news Thursday that, according to the government’s preliminary estimate, U.S. GDP growth was negative in the second quarter, the “are we in a recession?” debate is now in full swing. Many news outlets, including Fox Business, proclaimed that because this marks two consecutive quarters of negative growth, the U.S. has entered a “technical recession,” even as President Biden and his various spokespeople pointed to the fact that myriad economic indicators other than GDP growth are strong enough that the recession label doesn’t fit. That has led to accusations that the administration is attempting to change the definition of a recession for political purposes.
None of this means that the economy is in a great place. High inflation, and particularly high gas prices, has meant that everyone feels distressed and uneasy. But the real concern shouldn’t be with what has happened over the past six months, but rather with what might happen over the next six. With the Federal Reserve raising interest rates sharply in order to bring inflation down, what has been a kind of faux recession could all too easily become a real one.

The rate at which heat pumps are installed almost doubled during 2021 in the U.K. As a result, there will be many homes with new heat pumps, funded with public subsidies, that can only provide heating. Installed properly, a heat pump can cool as well as heat a home. Better homes overall This lack of foresight in national responses to climate change is frustrating. Insulating buildings would help permanently lower energy bills for millions, but the U.K. government has starved energy efficiency measures of resources over the past decade. Recently, plans were abandoned that would have doubled funding for low-income households to become more energy efficient. Meanwhile, the U.K.’s newly built homes suffer from much of the same poor insulation as older ones. Some countries are being more proactive.
Italian homeowners can claim 110% of the cost of energy efficiency improvements against their taxes, up to €100,000 over five years. That is more than enough to upgrade a house to net-zero standard, estimated at £26,000 in the U.K.
CLIMATE PROOF HOUSING
And, if the technology is powered by a dispersed renewable energy network, comprised of rooftop solar panels feeding excess energy to the grid, society will be more resilient to future spikes in the price of energy. Beyond any benefits these actions might have for tackling climate change, they simply reflect the reality of modern life. The solutions are simple, but implementing them will be complex–all countries must coordinate their responses more effectively. A lot of money, both public and private, will be spent on cutting emissions to net zero. Unless countries plan for adapting to rising temperatures at the same time, the opportunity for more comfortable, resilient, and livable homes will be lost.
By Ran Boydell
If homes need less energy to heat or cool because they have been made more energy efficient, it would help reduce (and perhaps even eradicate) fuel poverty. If they are able to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures and air quality through better ventilation, they can better accommodate people working or learning from home should there be another pandemic.
Buildings are designed to keep people safe and comfortable according to the local climate: warm when it’s cold outside, dry when it’s wet, and sheltered when it’s stormy. If the climate changes, buildings may struggle to serve our needs in the new conditions. The U.K.’s recent 40°C heatwave showed that many existing structures–especially the homes where we spend twothirds of our lives–aren’t up to the task.
The other half of that obligation is mitigation: cutting emissions as fast possible to minimize the temperature increase. By adapting homes to withstand stronger heatwaves, countries have an opportunity to meet both needs at the same time. You will have heard some of the solutions for decarbonizing buildings: increased roof and wall insulation and double-glazed windows for energy efficiency, and replacing gas boilers with alternatives such as heat pumps which can run on renewable electricity. These same measures will also help people stay safe during future heatwaves. Just as better insulation keeps warm air inside during winter, it keeps it outside during summer. Shutters or blinds that block sunlight are a simple option for lowering indoor temperatures by keeping out even more heat. It even helps to paint roofs a light color to better reflects the sun’s rays. In the Australian state of New South Wales, a policy to completely ban dark roofs was recently considered.Shutters have been used for centuries in hot countries to banish the midday sun. Most homes in the U.K. are heated with gas boilers but have no equivalent system for cooling. Heat pumps can help. These machines are essentially refrigerators working backwards. Where a fridge sucks heat from its interior and disperses it through the coils on its back, a heat pump sucks the heat from the air (or ground) outside and transfers it to the inside of your house to keep you warm in winter. The process runs on electricity, so it does this without needing to burn gas. Heat pumps can be programmed to work a reverse cycle, allowing them to pump cold water rather than hot through the radiators in summer. But this cooling cycle has to be built into the heat pump system when it’s installed–it’s not as simple as flicking a switch. Unfortunately, the U.K. government offers little guidance. The Energy Saving Trust, a government body tasked with

Homes aren’t designed to withstand these brutal heatwaves—but they could be making homes more energy efficient, neglects even to mention in its guide to heat pumps that they are capable of cooling.
122 Older people with existing health problems are among the most vulnerable during hot weather, as the heat can exacerbate potentially fatal conditions such as respiratory and heart diseases and even Alzheimer’s. An early estimate suggests as many as 1,000 excess deaths may have occurred in England and Wales as a result of the three-day heatwave in mid-July 2022. Each country must upgrade its buildings to keep people safe as the world warms. This is part of what climate change experts call adaptation.
Psychopathy: a mental disorder marked by egocentric and antisocial behavior. Machiavellianism: rooted in the political theory of 16th-century Italian philosopher Niccolo Machiavelli, who pioneered the idea that achieving a desired end result is justified by any means necessary—no matter how unscrupulous the path may be. least, not if it wants to weed out the rotten apples—because who wants to buy those?
Together124 these personality traits are known as the “dark triad,” a sinister set of behavioral leanings often observed in people characterized as “callous,” “manipulative,” “malevolent,” or otherwise “notably offensive.” And according to a new study published in the Journal of Marketing from a quartet of U.S. universities, the dark triad makes for a darn good salesperson—or “conniving snake,” in the American “Salespeoplevernacular.score higher on these dark traits than all other professions,” the study notes, “except for CEOs, lawyers, and celebrities.”Toanyone familiar with the rampant verbal abuse of Glengarry Glen Ross‘s real estate team (“Coffee’s for closers!“), it probably comes as no surprise that the sales industry is brimming over with darkness, although it may be less obvious when you think of the jolly Girl Scout Brownie troop peddling cookies on your doorstep. In fact, most academic research on sales teams focuses on positive traits, such as self-motivation, adaptiveness, and extraversion. But as the new study notes, the importance of the negative traits cannot be ignored. That doesn’t mean the bad guys come out on top: The study’s findings also caveat the success of dark triad personalities in sales long-term. In the short term, dark triad salespeople can mask the dysfunctional aspects of their personalities (such as callous self-interest) with more functional ones (such as charisma), thus getting hired at firms that would hardly seek out “cutthroat colleague,” or they might even rapidly scale the corporate ladder by trampling on those around them. But narcissism and psychopathy often result in a “fall from grace,” the study writes. The antagonistic behaviors associated with the dark triad can ultimately undermine relationships with coworkers and diminish social capital, thus crashing their sales performance. This happens more quickly in businesses where corporate culture is better structured to unmask the dark triad personality, versus in workplaces that obscure the misdeed of a dark salesperson. However, while the narcissistic and psychopathic often get their comeuppance in sales, the same does not hold true for the Machiavellian—who might soar in the long term,

THE DARK SIDE OF THE SALES INDUSTRY
It’s filled with Machiavellians, narcissists, and psychopaths the study suggests. And while the reasoning behind this is unclear, Machiavellian types have been known to, for example, cut corners at work to great effect. The bottom line? The sales world cannot be blind to the dark triad, the study writes. At By Connie Lin Narcissism: excessive admiration of oneself.
How to use anger to your advantage at work
To express your anger, state it instead of acting it out, says Abrams. There is nothing wrong with saying “I’m really angry,” or “This is making me mad.”
“This statement requires somebody listening to you and interacting with you,” says Abrams. “You’re not scary, and you’re not pushing them away. You’ve raised your anger as an issue that has to be dealt with. It’s the responsibility of the other person to ask why or to find out if they can help you. Maybe they won’t agree with you, but that’s the normal speed limit.”
You’ve likely felt angry at work, but have you expressed it? Many people feel like anger doesn’t have a place in the workplace, but Hesha Abrams, author of Holding the Calm: The Secrets to Resolving Conflict and Defusing Tension, says it does.
“You’re expressing your feelings, and you have a right to express anger,” says Abrams. “It depends on the situation, who you’re talking to, and how angry you are. But you still have to have control of yourself.”Forexample, you might say, “I’m really angry. This policy is just wrong. It’s going to impact and hurt a lot of people.”
just vent out your anger. Choose how to express that anger. We have a gas pedal. You wouldn’t drive 90 in a school zone, and you wouldn’t drive 20 on the highway. Moderate your behavior for the speed limit of the environment.”
126 Anger is a normal emotion, and if you don’t deal with it, it sits and compresses and then blows up and explodes out in an ugly, nasty way,” she says. “Rage has no place in the workplace, but anger does.” Anger can be used to your advantage, but only if you express it in the right way. Get a grip First, get a hold of yourself and to decide how you choose to express your anger. If you feel out of control and so angry that you can’t see or speak straight, Abrams suggests closing your mouth and taking a deep breath. She calls this “holding the “I’vecalm.”taught kids something I call ‘dinosaur it out,’” she says. “Bend your fingernails into the palm of your hand and squeeze hard. You get like a little tiny prick that’s enough trick your nervous system into thinking, ‘Something else is happening here.’ It breaks the anger-rage cycle. Quite frankly being out of control is scary to other people, especially when it’s someone higher up the power structure who can’t control themselves.”Next, ask yourself, “What is the outcome I hope to achieve?” Then design your approach backwards to be strategic about the outcome you want to get.
Consider the receiver When you express anger, Abrams says you have to speak to the ears that are hearing you. How you express anger is often based on how you were raised. For example, if you grew up in a family where anger and conflict were okay and people were comfortable with yelling, you might be a person who raises their voice when you’re angry. But if you grew up in a quiet, calm household, that type of expression might freak you out. “One person may say, ‘This is awful. You’re invading my space. And the other person might say, ‘I’m just passionate, trusting my feelings,’” says Abrams. “If you’re talking to a yeller, yelling is comfortable for them. If you’re talking to someone who is quiet, yelling will shut them down.” Abram compares anger to vomiting. It is more powerful if you can find allies, so you aren’t the only one who’s angry. “Odds are you’ll be marginalized if you’re alone, but if you can find other people who are also angry about what you’re angry about, then you can create allies,” says Abrams. “It’ll be taken more seriously.”

We get it. You’re busy working, studying, trying to meet up with friends, dealing with family obligations and so much more. And that’s what life is all about, but sometimes with all the surrounding excitement we get swept up in the moment and forget to slow down and enjoy it. We are just endlessly rushing from point A to point B without taking the time and effort to fully immerse ourselves in the experiences. We’re here to tell you that you can have your cake and eat it too, while still living your best life with some simple life hacks from MUJI.
Aroma Diffusers and Essential Oils #FTW
Storage Solutions to tame the blessed mess
A messy home can be a cause for stress. While some things in life can’t be dealt with, clutter can be easily cleared with the right storage solution. We have found that using MUJI’s PP and acrylic storage solutions all around the office and in our homes has really helped us make more room for the things that matter to us.
Life is beautiful when you have the right setup
One of the biggest game changers for us has been the addition of more aroma diffusers to our working and living spaces. Scent, is often the forgotten or ignored sense, yet infusing your surroundings with the right smell quickly changes your mood. MUJI have several options to choose from. We love the aroma diffusers that use ultrasonic waves to vaporize water and the essential oil in the tank to produce a cool, dry, fragrant mist and come in two different sizes. People on the go can still enjoy their favorite fragrances using the portable aroma diffuser, which doesn’t use water and is powered by a built-in rechargeable battery. Finally, the simplest of the bunch is the aroma stone, which doesn’t need power or heat to work. You can’t have an aroma diffuser without filling it up with the highest of quality essential oils. You can use the essential oils without blending them, but we’ve learned that mixing a couple of drops of different oils together creates synergy that just doesn’t happen when each one is used solo. Mix a few drops of rosemary and lemon to feel refreshed, or a few drops of bergamot and lemongrass for some relaxation. It’s fun and exciting to discover a blend that works best for you, so feel free to experiment.

Linen Clothing: Life’s best companion
It’s no secret that we love fashion here at bazaar, but we’ve also learned that strategically building our wardrobe on some key pieces makes getting ready in the morning much easier. Nothing is chic, practical, easy to care for and always in style like linen. MUJI’s linen clothing items come in a range of neutrals that can be easily incorporated into different looks. We have also learned to layer them so they can last us throughout the whole year.
WE’RE SELFISH WHEN WE’RE SLEEP-DEPRIVED
We’re less generous when we don’t sleep. Researchers reviewed 3 million charitable donations between 2001 and 2016, comparing American states that transitioned to daylight savings time with those that didn’t, and found a 10% drop in donations for states that changed their clocks. Our sleep deprivation has a ripple effect across our broader social society. According to Walker, “Even a very modest ‘dose’ of sleep deprivation has a very measurable and very real impact on people’s generosity and, therefore, how we function as a connected society.”
Wake up on the wrong side of the bed one morning? Research says that lack of quality sleep can not only make you less social and more selfish, but also that grumpiness can be felt throughout society. Scientists have found that lack of sleep is associated with increased health risks, such as cardiovascular disease, depression, diabetes, hypertension, and a shorter lifespan—and now, a less empathetic society, too.
mind network, the part of the brain that lights up when we’re feeling sympathetic, was less active in those sleep-deprived. “It’s as though these parts of the brain fail to respond when we are trying to interact with other people after not getting enough sleep,” said Ben Simon.
Sleep loss affects us and those around us. Sleepdeprived people were more likely to be socially disengaged, lonely, and isolated. “Worse still, when those sleep-deprived individuals interacted with other people, they spread their loneliness to those other individuals, almost like a virus,” said Walker.

The Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California Berkeley conducted multiple studies that found those who were sleepdeprived showed a decreased natural instinct to help others. Lead research scientists Eti Ben Simon and Matthew Walker looked primarily at the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of people after eight hours of sleep and those with no sleep and assessed the subjects’ level of selflessness and empathy toward others. Here’s what the study uncovered: Lack of sleep impairs the theory of mind network. fMRI’s showed that the theory of the

BUY OR SELL CRYPTO?
By Connie Lin
The most likely catalyst seems to be news that Ethereum blockchain developers have settled on a date for a forthcoming and long-awaited technology update called the “Merge,” in which the blockchain will migrate to a more carbon-friendly system that could allow it to scale up much more sustainably. As Ethereum is the blockchain that hosts the lion’s share of Web3’s infrastructure— including NFTs, gaming, and smart contracts, as well as the world’s second-biggest cryptocurrency token by market capitalization—the success or failure of the Merge could be a watershed moment for the industry as a whole. Investors have taken the news of a target date for Merge—for which preparations began back in December 2020, but which had been perpetually delayed for years—with some euphoria, as many claim to be bullish on the Merge. According to a tweet from an Ethereum developer, the team is aiming to launch the new and improved Ethereum on September 19. Following the tweet on July 14, the price of Ethereum spiked 12.5% within the same day, and is now up nearly 40% after a weekend surge. Similarly, Bitcoin rose more than 5% on July 14 and is now up more than 12%, from a sub$20,000 price to over $22,000 per coin—its highest point since June’s collapse of the major crypto lender Celsius. The rest of the market seems to have seen rallies of varying degrees in tandem. But beyond the Merge, some analysts also suspect that the worst of the fallout from the collapse of the Celsius network—as well as the implosion of Tether, which was one of the world’s biggest cryptocurrency stablecoins—may now be over, as they suggest the contagion has reached its limit. Celsius, for its part, filed for bankruptcy last week. According to its filings, it was unable to pay back users who had deposited $4.7 billion in funds. However, other analysts suspect the upswing may not last, as Bitcoin and Ethereum are already showing signs of slowing momentum, which can occur as they near so-called resistance points— at which prices run high enough that investors grow wary of buying, or may even start selling.
Crypto prices and stocks are rallying again, but don’t count the bear market out yet

Cell-cultivated meat could make cruelty-free exotic animal meat a reality
There are arguments in favor of developing these exotics meats. Undoubtedly, companies in this space would help bring in additional investment, and perhaps that would advance the broader cellular-agriculture tech to develop.
By Brian Kateman
Cell-cultivated beef, chicken, pork, and fish are all poised to hopefully solve the problems caused by their respective industries. But given there still isn’t a comparable-size industry behind the sale of, say, lion meat, it’s hard to argue that exotic meat cultivation is solving any current societal problems, exactly. But could it be causing newAtones?best, developing cell-cultivation processes for exotic meat is a superfluous endeavor. It seems unnecessary, maybe even wasteful, to pour money into developing slaughter-free panther meat when we don’t even have any commercially viable systems for making and selling cell-grown chicken or beef yet. When ecosystems are under immediate threat because of our dietary patterns, using the cutting edge of food science to develop a novelty product for fancy restaurants feels like a poor use of Furthermore, resources.bringing exotic animals into conversations about cell-cultivated meat is a questionable public relations move. It’s true that tiger and wooly mammoth meat make for splashy headlines, and that attention could draw funding
LAB MEAT
For example, certain cell types, such as those belonging to exotic species, could theoretically be easier to culture than more traditional ones. Then there’s the fact that imitating existing products is inherently hard, so it might be more strategic to instead create new tastes altogether where there isn’t any existing palate competition. But I don’t think these pros outweigh the cons, at least not at this early stage of development.
If you follow the food tech space, cell-cultured beef, chicken, and fish—that is, real meat grown from animal cells rather than slaughtered animals—are practically old hat by now. Berkeley-based Upside Foods just raised a whopping $400 million in funding as the company prepares to bring its first consumer product to market: cell-cultured chicken, made in partnership with chef Dominique Crenn. Elsewhere in the San Francisco Bay area, SCiFi Foods took in $22 million from investors as the company develops a scalable process for its premier product, which will be hybrid plant-based and cell-cultured beef. In Israel, food tech company SuperMeat recently received a grant to develop an open-source platform that’s meant to help the entire cell-cultured meat industry expand while keeping costs down. into the cell-cultivated meat industry at large. But to many consumers, the idea of “lab-grown” meat is still anything but appetizing. Plenty of people are still skeptical about the very concept, and aren’t ready for what they see as a science experiment to show up on their plates.
Photo by Misael Moreno on Unsplash.
Cell-cultivated meat is certainly a solution to the deleterious environmental and animal-welfare effects of livestock farming that doesn’t require a major upheaval in the way humankind eats. Naysayers are constantly pointing to declining sales figures for plant-based meat products, and some people are so opposed to the prospect of giving up their carnivorous ways that they would rather “die young” than go vegetarian. Cellcultured meat could, in theory, solve all of these problems: reduce livestock farming and animal suffering, and address global hunger, without anyone actually having to give up their favorite foods.
Suffice134it to say, there are a lot of companies working toward—and money being invested in—making cruelty-free but biologically identical chicken, pork, beef, and seafood products for popular consumption. What you may not know is that there are also a handful of companies using cell-cultivation strategies to make ethical and commercially available forms of meats that are . . . less familiar, to say the least. London-based company Primeval Foods focuses exclusively on cultivating exotic meats, such as lions, tigers, and zebras. Similarly, the Australian company Vow Foods is looking to address the problems of our modern food systems by exploring the possibilities of cellcultivated zebra or elephant meat. In Europe, food tech company Paleo has a patent pending for cultivated strains of the protein heme (which is said to be what makes meat taste meaty) that are bioidentical to that of several common livestock animals, and one, well, not so common: the longextinct wooly mammoth. From a culinary standpoint, I understand why chefs, foodies, and adventurous eaters would be excited about this prospect: We could theoretically get to try meats that have historically been off-limits due to laws, customs, or—in the case of the wooly mammoth—extinction. Best of all, it wouldn’t require the slaughter of any animal, let alone ones that are protected from hunting or those many of us would simply feel weird about eating. Lots of people might be curious to try, say, Swiss dog jerky if they could do it without the ethical discomfort of killing man’s best friend.

In some ways, it’s worth thinking about plastic along the same lines as climate change, she says.
Photo by tanvi sharma on Unsplash.
138 While the world was fixated on the global health crisis, the plastic crisis only got worse. Plastic products like PPE and disposable packaging were marketed as tools in the fight against COVID-19.
Remember all the disposable stuff you used when COVID-19 hit? It made the plastic crisis much, much worse plastic could keep them safer. “At the time of the pandemic, you saw a resurgence of single-use plastics,” Mah says. “There was amnesia about the turtles with the straws up their nose.” It wasn’t just PPE that flooded the market. It was also changes in our consumption during lockdown. As restaurants shut down, consumers turned to take-out, which comes in plastic containers, and e-commerce, which requires everything from bubble wrap to poly bags that wrap individual products. The nonprofit Oceana estimates that Amazon was responsible for 485 million pounds of packaging waste in 2019, a volume that would have increased by 38% in 2020 along with its increased sales. Mah says that even she felt guilty about the volume of plastic that entered her home in the U.K. during the pandemic. And while it’s true that people in the U.K. and U.S. generate between 218 and 240 pounds of plastic a year, which is double the global average, it’s also true that consumers are trapped in a society where plastic is ubiquitous. It’s very hard to go to the grocery store and ask for your meat, cereal, or vegetables not to be packaged in plastic, for instance. “People are locked into supply chains and infrastructures, unable to simply opt out of plastic consumption,” she says. So what’s the solution? Consumers can— and should— work to reduce their personal plastic consumption, but Mah argues that we need global, systemic solutions to get plastic out of our lives. The answer isn’t recycling, which comes with its own environmental costs; instead, we need to eliminate plastic as much as possible.
Ultimately, however, curbing plastic will mean redesigning almost every aspect of our lives. We will need to rethink the systems of food, shopping, transportation, logistics, public health, construction, and many other industries in order to fully excise plastic. This will mean moving away from our addiction to disposable products, and shifting toward durable, reusable goods. “Plastic has been seen as a miracle material that can be transformed into almost anything,” May says. “It is cheap, but if you calculate all the costs—the people who die of toxic exposure, the loss of clean water, the impact on our ecosystems—it’s not really that cheap. I don’t think the solution is to come up with some other magical material, but to learn how to live without it.”
Plastic filled our lives during the pandemic, littering our world with N95 masks, take-out containers, and single-use grocery bags.
One possible answer is for the United Nations to create an agreement similar to the Paris Climate Accord, but for plastic. A version of such a treaty is currently being discussed by the UN Environment Assembly, but it would take years to negotiate the complexGovernmentsdetails. must also play a role, because plastic corporations are unlikely to voluntarily reduce their own production. Legislators can pass outright bans on single-use plastics, which India did this month, forbidding the use of 19 plastic items like cups, straws, and ice-cream sticks. Governments can also hold companies accountable for the full lifecycle of their products, forcing them to pay for any pollution created when the item is thrown out. The European Union and Canada require plastic producers to pay for waste collection and management.
In a new book, Plastic Unlimited, researcher Alice Mah says it didn’t have to be this way. (We published an excerpt of her book here.) She argues that plastic corporations knowingly pushed false claims about the benefits of plastic during the pandemic in order to increase sales. And as life returns to normal, she says it’s crucial for companies and consumers to dramatically cut down on plastic production. In the years before the pandemic, consumers became increasingly worried about plastic, Mah says. In 2017 and 2018, stories about sea creatures dying from plastic pollution went viral, including a harrowing image of a turtle with a straw lodged up its nose. There was growing awareness about microplastics, tiny particles of plastic that end up in the food chain, harming our bodies. And given that the majority of disposable plastic ends up being incinerated, it also contributes to climate change. All of this led to a wave of activism that resulted in companies like Starbucks vowing to eliminate plastic straws and states like California and New York banning plasticThisbags.anti-plastic sentiment was so powerful that corporations took notice. “I noticed in my research with these petrochemical companies— these plastics companies—that there was a panic about how bad the public perception of plastics was and how they really needed to turn the narrative around,” Mah says. “I saw how they very rapidly organized to embrace a narrative around the circular economy and recyclability.” But then, Mah says, the pandemic struck, which turned out to be a gift for the plastic industry. Companies were able to make the case that plastic was hygienic and could help keep the virus at bay, and lobbied to reverse plastic bag bans. But these claims weren’t true. There were peer reviewed studies that COVID-19 could survive on plastic surfaces for up to three days, longer than most other materials, including cardboard.In2020, Greenpeace published a research brief saying that the plastics industry had manipulated the media with misleading claims that disposable plastic goods were more sanitary than reusable ones, exploiting anxiety about the pandemic to churn out more products. But by then, consumers already felt confident that

Clean up the ‘Continue Watching’ row
Lock your profile with a PIN What’s the point of having separate profiles
These 3 quick tweaks make Netflix much better
If you’ve subscribed to Netflix for any meaningful length of time, your Continue Watching row is probably a graveyard of shows and movies you’ve given up on halfway through.
140 Disable auto-playing previews The bane of every Netflix user’s existence, the auto-playing preview feature, can (and should!) be turned off. To do so, you’ll need to sign into your Netflix account from a web browser, click your profile image in the upper-right corner, and click the Account link. From there, navigate down to the Profile & Parental Controls section. Select a profile and head to the “Playback settings” section. Atop that page, uncheck “Autoplay previews while browsing on all devices.” You’ll need to tweak this setting for each profile, so if you live with a sociopath who actually enjoys the auto-playing previews, you can turn them off for your profile and leave them on for others.
From the browser, find the show you want to remove, hover your mouse over it, and click the little X from the pop-up menu.
And finally, most smart TVs require an extra step. You’ll need to actually click into the show you want to remove, then arrow your way down in the navigation section on the left and choose “Remove from Continue Watching.”

It’s easy to remove content you’re no longer interested in, but how you do it varies depending on whether you’re watching via the browser, a mobile app, or a smart TV.
From the Netflix app on Android and iOS, find the show you want to remove, click the little three-dot icon in the lower-right corner, and select “Remove From Row.”

While baking is undoubtedly a science, you do not require a graduate degree in the former to create delectable bakes at home. It is also said that behind every delicious morsel of any scrumptious cake is a successful, easy-to-follow recipe, but what we feel is equally important is having the right tools and ingredients to undertake any given baking task. A destination to create, innovate and bake, Bakers’ Point in Shuwaikh is the one-stop destination for all of your culinary escapades, and it’s also the setting where we were challenged to undertake a professional Cream Tart recipe at home. Our anxiety was eased (okay, kinda), when we learned that this recipe challenge came about with Bakers’ Point’s latest recipe collaboration with local chef extraordinaire, Talal AlHamdhan of Talal’s Cake Academy. A first of a series of collaborations with distinguished movers and ‘bakers’ in Kuwait’s culinary scene, we instantly felt that this recipe collaboration was a match made in heaven. Talal understands the anxieties of novice bakers and encounters this all the time when he is leading his famed culinary seminars, this is why he believes that baking enthusiasts of all levels can recreate even the most professional of cakes and tarts at home with a little encouragement from Bakers’ Point. And while you might be afraid of your technique, that can be improved with practice.
Once we’ve refocused our energies, we found the professional-grade BakeMate Sponge Cake Mix we needed within arms’ reach. We also quickly found the rest of our dry ingredients (BakeMate Icing Sugar, Sugarless New Vanilla Powder, and Cream Chantille mix), along with the ‘wet’ ingredients like butter, the Abed Cream clearly listed, as well as the special White Chocolate Cream to be added to our filling mix. From there, we moved on to gathering the tools we needed to make our Cream Tart Cookes come to life, from piping bags, baking sheets, to the gorgeous letter and number stencil cookie cutters (Which we will be using when making all cookies from this point forward). We also noted the best professional grade mixing bowls, whisks and silicone molds and literally every kitchen accessory under the sun. But we were on a mission, so we speedily queued up and paid to run home and attempt this challenge.
145[Continued...]
• We first began with the dough base for the tarts, as this needs to be refrigerated for several hours, or preferably overnight. The best part about the recipe is that we begin by using the BakeMate sponge cake mix, so whatever is needed to get the right texture is already taken care of!
Our Review: All in all, this was a super fun, easy to replicate recipe, yet it was quite mentally challenging at the same time, as the mere thought of attempting a tart base would send this bazaar writer running quite fast in the opposite direction. However, the BakeMate Sponge Mix, and the recipe itself, took a lot of fear out of the challenge. More importantly, finding everything we needed in one place to attempt this challenge also took a lot of guess work out of the entire experience. We advise you to try something new, and head to Bakers’ Point yourself to get your baking on! Shop online:
Part 3) The Assembly:
146 Here’s our ingredient list and measurements for both the Tart Dough and the Cream filling: Tart Dough: 360 grams BakeMate Sponge Cake Mix, 125 grams BakeMate Icing Sugar, 2 Egg Yolks, 200 grams Blue River Premium Butter, 1 teaspoon New Vanilla (Sugarless) Cream Filling: 250 grams Blue River Premium Butter, 1 teaspoon New Vanilla (Sugarless), 200 grams Abed Cream, 125 grams White Chocolate Creamy, 125 grams Cream Chantille, 200 grams BakeMate Icing Sugar.
Part 2) The Cream Filling:
Part 1) The ‘Cookie’ Tart Dough:
[...Continued]
• Lastly comes the cold (yes, make sure it is cold!) Abed Cream, and keep whisking until stiff peaks appear.
• We mix the BakeMate Sponge Mix, along with the BakeMate Icing Sugar into a mixer, then slowly add the egg yolks, butter, and vanilla. This is mixed and kneaded a few times just until it starts coming together, then it is wrapped up in cling film and placed in the fridge.
• Finally, it was assembly time! We used our Piping Set, which we also got at Bakers’ Point, and set about filling our Tart Cookie Bases, and this part was so much fun! Okay, we might have over filled some cookies, and it did take a few practice runs until we got it right, but the cream filling is super tasty, you could eat this alone!
• We said goodnight to our dough, and prayed we got it right when we took it out of the fridge the next day. The recipe did say that the dough will crumble slightly the next day as we kneaded it to soften, but then it quickly came together next.
Phew!
• We then baked the shapes for 10-15 minutes, until we saw that beautiful golden color appear around the edges.
• Once the piping is done, we brought the corresponding batch of already baked and cooled Tart letters to complete the back-to-school message, and ever-so-gently placed these on top of the piped letters. Et Voila!
• Then came the cream filling, which was actually super easy to replicate! We first softened the butter for 5 minutes, added the vanilla and then gradually added the icing sugar. You can do this by hand, or the paddle attachment on your stand mixer.
Disclaimer: The mere mention of ‘tart’ pastry is very triggerng for this bazaar team, but armed with courage, we bit the metaphoric bullet and just went for it. We’ve also broken down our experience in these easy-to-follow steps for you:
• Once incorporated, you whisk in the White Chocolate Cream, and Cream Chantille mix for two minutes.
Unleash your inner baker (or feed your current one!) and visit Bakers’ Point in Shuwaikh Industrial 3, Blk A, St. 85, beside Manara mall. Follow them on Instagram for the latest updates @bakerspoint.kw.
• Then the fun part, rolling it out, and measuring it to 0.5 cm thickness and cutting out the shapes we needed using our letter cutters. We did a double set of letters, as we needed each letter twice. Bazaar tip: Make sure you have a nice cool flat surface to work with! We also added a small amount of flour on the rolling pin to avoid it sticking to the dough. Chef Talal actually advises to use parchment paper between the dough and the rolling pin, which was a smart move as the dough rolled out really well and we got our shapes looking really good, albeit some bits crumbled off, but that’s neither here nor there.

Artist: The Hubbards Title: That’s Not Right Format: Single Release date: 2018 The Hubbards are exactly the opposite of what you think of when you remember 90s boy bands, because the lads are misleading. The buoyant tunes and luscious chords are just half of the story. The lyrics can be cynical and stinging but honest and raw. They’re serving us a dish of reality and we want seconds!

Artist: Cheekface Title: Too Much to Ak Format: Album Release date: August 2022
Artist: Vundabar Title: Gawk Format: Album Release date: 2015 Vundabar is an American indie rock band from Boston, Massachusetts. Vundabar released their first full-length album in 2013 titled Antics. In 2015, Vundabar released their second fulllength album titled Gawk. It’s a gritty, post-punk album that works really well when you roll down the windows and turn up the volume to the max.
If you’ve never heard Cheekface, then start with this album. This is quintessential approachable music: fun, danceable, no-frills indie rock. Unapologetically cringey but a reflection of real life, the songs are hilarious but instantly relatable. Our two picks for your playlist are When Life Hands You Problems and We Need a Bigger Dumpster.
