Int Here we go again, back in Kuwait, back to life, back to reality, back to the humidity, back to the horrible September traffic, and the horrible broken-down roads that still haven’t been fixed. It’s not all bad though. You have to admit that you breathed a huge sigh of relief as soon as you got home from the airport and felt that lovely central AC cool you down, and you probably breathed an even bigger sigh of relief once you realized you were back to normal internet speeds at home and on your mobile (especially if you were summering in Lebanon or Egypt!). Nevertheless, life goes on and it’s time to dust off your laptop and see if you still remember all of your passwords because it’s time to get back to the grind. We’ve already been at it for a while so that we could get this issue out to you on time, and it’s fantastic if we dare say so ourselves. But before we dive in, have you had breakfast yet? After summer’s excesses we’re trying to detox our systems. We’re switching to Only Organic eggs and juice and we have some great suggestions for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that you might appreciate. We also discovered the gem that is Singa Pura, and we can’t stop going back to try out more Singaporean delicacies right here in Kuwait. We met psychologist-turned-baker Nour Almejadi for our Up Close and Personal feature and we think that her work is super therapeutic; baking is the perfect escape for those days when the traffic (or the kids nagging) is simply too much to bear. For Truth or Dare, we met with multidisciplinary artist Graffiti Freak, who probably spent most of his schooldays doodling on his desk to get away from reality with art, and whose work can be seen as the perfect visual escape all over Kuwait. Read the article to find out why. When dealing with getting back to your nine-to-five schedule, looking good while you’re at it really makes all the difference. This is why we’re breaking new fashion boundaries with H&M’s gorgeous Autumn/Winter Studio collection that is inspired by magical realism. Look out for our exclusive online interview with H&M’s Creative Advisor Ann-Sofie Johansson for more details on how this collection is redefining every modern woman’s wardrobe. The key to getting back to a somewhat functional routine is balance- you do need mini breaks to escape reality. For us, there’s nothing quite like cruising in a gorgeous ride while playing some great music on blast. This is why we worked with Jaguar over the summer and are in love with the F-PACE. The compact luxury crossover SUV drives like a dream and can take you from the desert to the city without skipping a beat. From the F-Pace, to a thrilling drive across beautiful Chinese landscapes with Maserati, exploring Porsche’s Hybrid Cayenne and learning all about Ferrari’s Superfast heritage, our beautiful auto pages will have you daydreaming in no time! And just in case you don’t want to drive, or are one of the ‘unfortunates’ not allowed to drive in Kuwait because of some of the draconian rules when it comes to expats driving, know that you have a lot of alternative options to just hailing a taxi in the street. We did a roundup of apps that can help you get from point A to point B without having to get behind the wheel. Summer might be over on the calendar, but it’s still hot outside, so the bazaar team tried the new bowling club in Salmiya for some excitement and indoor activity. There were few strikes and many misses, but it was so much fun that we might just start an official office team. Happy reading! Ahmed El-Adly

NOUR ALMEJADI
What do a cyborg activist, a gender activist, architect and an applied ethics researcher have in common? They will all be speaking at this year’s regional Nuqat conference. The theme is “State of The Elastic Mind: New mindsets for old barriers” and these four definitely have exceptional mindsets.
Singapore might be a tiny island city-state but what it lacks in size it absolutely makes up for in cuisine. Singa Pura, Kuwait’s first and only Singaporean restaurant was the perfect introduction to an exciting world of wonderful tastes and flavors.
This dynamic crossover SUV is the ultimate juxtaposition of a British inspired elegant lifestyle and country pursuits. It can seamlessly move from weekday errands to wild weekend exploring over the weekend. It is an aspirational and functional car, which delivers on performance without compromising on luxury or looks.
She trained as a child-psychologist but pivoted into baking and pastry making. Nour Almejadi tells us how she journeyed into the world of puff pastry and pottery while documenting and photographing it all to share it with the world.

His name is still a guarded secret and we’re ok with letting him keep it if we can get to keep the art he makes. From street-art in the form of graffiti to working with canvas, this is an artist who is open to new ideas and techniques.
Back to school time can be stressful for children but it is also a wonderful opportunity to brush up on some skills that can make the transition much easier and beneficial to everyone. Our resident therapist/writer gives us some easy and doable tips that can help kids (and grownups) play better with others.
Throwing that big heavy bowling ball towards ten faraway pins turned out to be much more exciting than we thought. We trekked to the new Kuwait Bowling Club in Salmiya to check out the venue and facilities and had a fantastic experience. We might have even scored a few strikes.
When we think of power-dressing we imagine dark unflattering pin-stripe suits. But this season, the H&M Studio collection reimagines the looks and sprinkles some fairy dust on them and turns them into something feminine and magical.

NUQAT SPEAKER SERIES: NEIL HARBISSON
Meet the Cyborg Activist with a new organ that changes the way he experiences the world By bazaar staff
Nothing signals the start of the creative and cultural season in Kuwait like marking our calendars for an upcoming Nuqat Regional Conference. This year, Nuqat further marks a milestone 10-year anniversary, and while the announcement has the entire region buzzing with excitement, Kuwait’s Nuqat-goers must be wondering how this year’s theme, focused on discussing the ‘State of the Elastic Mind: A New Mindset for Old Barriers’, will bring thinkers, creatives, activists, and policymakers from all over the Arab World to Kuwait. All in the effort to better understand, properly critique and reframe mindsets that have shaped prevalent, and even endemic, social structures in the Arab world, bazaar has partnered with Nuqat to bring you this exclusive Speaker series, which aims to introduce some of the great minds flying in for the special 10-day conference that will take place at the Amricani Cultural Center this November. Neil Harbisson’s experience as a cyborg activist will truly stretch your perception on elastic thought. By having an antenna implanted in his skull that allows him to perceive visible and invisible colors via audible vibrations in his skull including infrareds and ultraviolets, Neil is challenging how we could literally perceive our world in a whole new light. The Catalan-raised, Britishborn contemporary artist is the first offically recognized cyborg by a government. Neil. Let’s get right into it. Have you faced any structural, social or personal barriers in your personal or professional journey? If so, what were they? From the moment I began the process of merging biology with technology, I faced new barriers that I haven’t faced before. Bureaucratic procedures serve as a barrier for sure, everything from passport photos to security screening, as I have to explain to people that the antenna is part of my body and it cannot be removed. For example, simple things like renewing my passport was a challenge because passport photos in the UK do not allow any electronic products to appear in the photo. Also, an ongoing barrier that I face daily mainly has to do with social reactions since people react in different ways when they see the antenna coming out of my head. People have different perceptions about the antenna, some thought it was a GoPro while others thought I was a PokeMon and they tried to catch me, so social reactions keep changing usually a spectrum of positive to negative. 28
What would you consider to be the starting point of your career? When I started attending university in England in 2002, that was when I realized [how our experience of] music can be different. I had been studying piano in a very classical way in the beginning, but then the university began to push us to find new ways to express our self through music. That was when I had my first contact with technology and that was when I started creating the antenna which would become my life. So I would say it was during my university years that I started merging technology and art. Is there a turning point or an experience in your life that made you change your mindset or practice elastic thinking? If there is, please take us through that process. I.e. what was your initial mindset, what was the experience you were faced with that triggered you to change your mindset and what mindset are you in now? Having a new sense and a new organ has changed the way I sense myself but also sense the world because I can now perceive things that my body could not perceive before. The antenna allows me to sense infrareds and ultra-violets which are colors that the human eye cannot sense. So now I can sense colors that our species, well humans, cannot sense but other species can, so I feel more connected to other animals. So now I feel closer
to nature because I can sense nature in a deeper way. How do you relax? When I observe people. I usually go to a café and watch people walk by. It is a way to disconnect. What item would you put in a time capsule to help the next century understand our current moment? A mobile phone, since it is the current object that everybody has. What are you looking forward to the most about coming to Kuwait? First of all, I have never been to Kuwait so I am excited to visit. Second, when I was growing up I kept hearing about Kuwait, starting from the war onwards, so I am curious to visit. I want to avoid having any preconceived notions about Kuwait so I am refraining myself from knowing too much, as I enjoy knowing as little as possible about a place before visiting so my impression is created when I am there not before. But the story doesn't end here! Neil answers more fun questions on www.bazaar.town, so head to our website for more exclusive content! Stay updated about Nuqat’s latest on Instagram @nuqat and visit www.nuqat.me for more information.

KEEPIN’ IT REAL IN THE STREETS Through the eyes of Graffiti Freak By bazaar staff
Image captured by Hyper Ali
Upon his arrival, Freak was standing by our offices on the 8th floor looking for what’s known in the Graffiti world as the “Heaven Spot”. It’s a term that refers to those daredevil graffiti pieces which are painted in places that are difficult to reach, like rooftops, overpasses and freeway signs making them even more difficult to remove. He was pointing at a couple of billboards where you can see the stairs leading to them, and just from that determined look in his eyes, we knew that he already had paved the path for a piece! *Freak’s creatively artistic streak has always been evident from such a young age, and he describes how he began with graffiti sketches, like practicing letters in his notebook during class when he was only 14-years-old. He says, “I was just attracted to [graffiti] as a young kid. I also like the aspect of free art; art in the streets for everyone. You don’t have to pay a fee
30
to go to a gallery or a museum. But that was then, this is now.” We’re seeing his work not only in the streets and also on walls across K-town, commonly with his graffiti crew SKC, but on canvases as well! Nowadays, the art direction has clearly switched for this creative. Freak’s transition from being a well-practiced graffiti artist, and into becoming a well-versed, multidisciplinary artist began a little more than a year ago. He felt like taking on this challenge to diversify his creative skills in order to stand out in the art world, “I got to know people that were more into the art realm than into the graffiti realm, and I really took towards that,” he says. It was also the competitive part of it, as he is the type of person who likes to compete against his artistic friends, so the appeal to branch out peaked then and there. According to Freak, there are two types of graffiti artists, “One of them is the vandal, who is the person that only likes to scribble on walls. They like to destroy stuff.” Keep in mind, graffiti vandals are typically anonymous, and Freak may have been one at some point, before emerging on to the art scene, which is why he prefers keeping his name behind closed doors. He continues by explaining, “Then there are people that like it for the art, and that was mostly me,
I like the art side of it.” That’s why he sees himself as both a mixed media artist, as well as a graffiti artist, where these two realms flawlessly merge into one. It made sense to him, and in looking back at his graffiti idols, which include the likes of Saber, Kaws, and Revok, they too settled into the broader art world and experienced a similar transition. “I can’t just stay doing the same thing over and over until I'm 40-yearsold, I like to branch out and work on different things,” he says. We’ve also seen that within his various collaborations, whether it was with brands or with fellow artists, selling canvases and putting art in homes as well as on the streets. Most recently, his collaboration with creatives like Kickstq is all everyone could talk about in town! They previously worked together for a really cool customization event at local concept SNKR store. Curated by Kickstq, Freak artfully created customizations on several pairs of Air Max sneakers from Nike, and he is pushing towards designing more t-shirts, so we’re keeping an eye out for even doper collabs in the future! As much as we’re seeing more art on our city walls, the community still lacks more graffiti artists in Kuwait. Not just that, Freak himself says that “In the graffiti world for sure we don’t have enough support
for each other. I have '3en' and 'Numb' who are part of the SKC crew, we’re supporting each other. But unlike Europe or America, we dont have support in terms of having a ‘legal yard’ where artists can openly spray walls with graffiti.” There’s also the exception of having permits from restaurants, coffee shops, and stores to create graffiti art, and that’s essentially how many graffiti artists are doing their work legally these days, through these types of commissions. It’s interesting to note that, how back in the day, if you’re getting paid for a piece of graffiti, you’d instantly be labeled as a sell-out, “But at the end of the day, everyone needs to support themselves the best way they can.” says Freak. Most notably, the recent demolition of the Al Sawaber towers had a huge impact on all artists, Freak reminisces and describes how this ignored space used to be a thriving playground for creatives, “We used to paint there all the time. The community was much better when Sawaber was still up, but now that it’s taken down we don’t have a place to graffiti a lot and just be ourselves.” Nevertheless, Freak is looking forward to the future, he is after all only 26-years-old. He has plenty of time to experiment and see his artwork displayed in galleries and museums, but also still represent himself out there in the streets, where it all began. With a creative mind of an artist like Freak, we know that his work is just going to keep growing and constantly evolve, and we also credit this drive to his background in architecture, as this adds an entirely new dimension to his work. “Because I’m an Architect, I would like to design shoes for Nike and Adidas, and industrial stuff too,” he says. Freak believes his best qualities lay in his ability to generate creative content, and we’re all on board this creative’s journey to witness those ideas as they come alive! MR.D0NE’S GAME ON
The ultimate E-Football initiative brought to you by Red Bull Kuwait! By bazaar staff
Mr.D0ne’s Game On is an E-Football initiative that arrives in the format of an E-Sports Competition with a compelling twist that is held in three different locations across Kuwait in September and October 2019. E-Sports enthusiasts will now be able to cheer and gear up for a challenging game like no other within the region! It all began with Abdulaziz Alshehri, who also goes by the alias Mr.D0ne. A bonafide Red Bull E-Sports athlete, Mr. D0ne is the first-ever player from the Middle East to win the FIFA eWorld Cup. The Saudi Arabian player won, what was then the FIFA Interactive World Cup Grand Final in Munich, Germany back in 2015. Since then, he became a well-recognized icon in the E-Sports world, acquiring the privilege to be in the company of lifelong legends in the football world, including famous footballers like Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, and Lionel Messi. 34
Renowned for his smooth moves and magnetic skills, Mr.D0ne’s now focusing on developing the profile of E-Football in the Middle East for amateur gaming enthusiasts in the region, starting with MrD0ne’s Game On in K-town. The event, which aims to kick start the regional initiative will take place on September 27 and will feature four qualifiers in two different locations in Kuwait. Starting on the 27th of September, the tournament will feature four qualifier rounds at two different locations in Kuwait. Held as two separate events, each qualifier round will showcase teams of two to participate in a whopping 16 rounds. From there, the winning teams will continue on to the final rounds taking place on October 17 at 360 MALL. For the game itself, the rules are fairly simple, yet full of intensity and suspense! There are four players per game, with two players on each team. Each team needs to have a designated controller and the game begins regularly with two players. However, the idea is that each team member must tag and switch with another teammate during the game when one team
scores or the team gets scored on, when a red card is given, and also at half time. Each team is also granted one free switch when the ball is not in play. Teams who end up in a tie would play the Golden Goal round where it will lead to a penalty shootout, switching players per shoot. Sounds intense? Just wait till you’re in the game and the challenge is on! Mr.D0ne’s Game On initiative is a great participation for any E-Football lovers out there! Now that E-Sports competitions are truly blowing up around the globe, this is the chance to take the game, and turn it into your own field!

HOW TO ADULT
Part 1: regular maintenance By Ayman Nassar
As someone who spends the majority of his professional life reviewing policies and procedures for every nook and cranny of the business world, it seems rather peculiar that no such volume exists for the greatest endeavor of them all, adulthood. This eventual destination, or state of being, into which we are all dragged kicking and screaming, has me truly believing that no one in their right mind would voluntarily sign up for such an existence. Despite demonstrating great capabilities as evidenced by our technological advances, which, if you look back as far as a mere decade or two ago, have progressed in leaps and bounds to a level of almost science fictional proportions, we as humans still have a hard time accepting the responsibility of dreaded adulthood. Some form of science recently stated that adulthood really kicks in when we hit our 30s. However, I find that a difficult notion to subscribe to, hence I’ll take it upon myself to give a few ideas on how-to-adult, for the everyday person. It starts with maintenance. This word is all encompassing, it starts off with the spare tire in the back of your car, that single safety net that no one pays any attention to, but one would desperately need when faced with a calamity of puncture-ific proportions. If you think of it, the average risk a person should accept is 36
25%, as you regularly drive on four tires, but only carry one spare in case of emergency. I had the misfortune of discovering just how lopsided that risk assessment really is. It started with a flat tire after a long vacation, nothing serious. The closest tire shop had no air, which had me rolling up my sleeves and changing said tire myself. To my chagrin, the spare was also slightly deflated. It got me moving for a while, almost to the point where I felt confident to speed up, and just as I was 2 KM away from my destination, disaster struck. I started seeing bits of black rubber flying off the road, and realized that the tire’s unraveling was imminent. Pulling over to the side, I changed the tire back to the originally deflated one, which managed to get me where I had to go, to get it inflated. You can’t make this stuff up. The moral of the story is quite clear. First, we need to focus on maintenance. Just because something appears full, it does not necessarily mean that it is. Just as we should regularly inflate the four tires of our vehicles after 2,500 KM, we also need the metaphorical spare in life, despite it being unseen. For, if that lifeline is deflated, chances are you will find yourself in a similar sticky situation (really sticky, it was 40 degrees Celsius and here I was changing my second tire in only 30 or so odd minutes). Second, do not take things for granted. Just because the deflated tire got us moving, that does not mean it will sustain you for the whole journey. Reparation is key. For anything in life, be it something as trivial as a tire, or as complex as a relationship. Third, calmness is key. When something bad
happens, pull over to the side, breathe and assess the situation. No amount of ‘ifs’ and ‘maybes’ will undo what has been done, so sit up straight and take ownership of the situation. Fourth, do not be afraid to ask for help, even when it appears unexpectedly. As my second flat had me on the wrong side of the 4th ring road, a passing police car pulled up. My first thought was, I am going to get a ticket. The officer in question was most helpful, even getting down to help me change the tire (despite my outward appearance of being able to hold my own). Afterwards, he drove behind me until I got to a side-street, then went on his merry way, a hero in my eyes; a regular act in his own. The only fine he gave me was my feeling after the encounter. Adulthood, much like plans, is the bi-product of our every-day decisions. It happens when we look ourselves in the mirror and finally accept that we are the safety net. If we do not plan properly, no one shall do so in our stead. If we forget to pay a bill, problems will arise. If a simple act such as making your bed in the morning can instill discipline, so too can focusing on the preventive maintenance in our lives with the hopes of it helping us become adultier adults. And on that note, welcome back after the summer holidays everyone, the adjustment to reality has been very real. But, we’ve got this! Like the Rubik’s Cube, Ayman Nassar is multi-colored in his interests, from running to organizing races, standup comedy and internal audit, plus a little writing on the side. A HANDFUL OF DOUGH AND CLAY
Discover Nour Almejadi 's magical creations By bazaar staff
Hobbies are a beautiful thing to pursue in life, they help you commit to a ritual of self-betterment. As is the usual case with having a hobby, one begins to develop a sense of determination, and for some people, it could be life changing. That is exactly what happened to Nour Almejadi. The R&D (Research and Development) pastry chef received her diploma in pastry-making about a year and a half ago, and now her daily cake creations, mixed with different flavors and looking absolutely flawless, mark a voyage to admire and take inspiration from. While Nour essentially studied Psychology at Kuwait University, her culinary journey began to take shape since she was a kid. As she says, “Since middle school I started baking cookies and cakes, but I never thought it would be my profession. I actually did the bake sales but as a hobby. I always wanted to be a psychologist, but yeah, here we are now!” Today, she is a full-time pastry chef who works at Prepline and, occasionally, dabbles in pottery (this is an understatement, keep on reading to learn why). Nour also takes inspiration from Pinterest and cookbooks, which she describes as a cliché, but let’s be real, we’re all, at some point, extremely addicted to Pinterest. “I don't really follow these recipes, I take the idea and then change it into something I’d like or to the theme I’m baking for, and to our flavors,” she says. Baking is both a science and craft, it requires skill, precision, researching and planning ahead, which is Nour’s usual process before going into the kitchen and settling in by playing some music and baking! The hashtag #cakesbynour alone showcases her progress throughout the years, plus the transformation of her culinary style. There’s no doubt in stating that she is truly a perfectionist, as each cake is impeccably beautiful, detailed and must be delightfully delicious. Nour says it herself, “I’d remember how many hours I had spent on those cakes. Now I can whip up a cake in two hours, and it’s not perfect but it’s much better than the one I'd spent three days on.” Not only is Nour an absolute perfectionist, she also takes 38
photos to document every cake she’s done herself as they are seen on these pages, and on her Instagram profile. As Nour continued to master her profession, she realized she needed another hobby, one that she would completely immerse herself into, and that hobby turned out to be pottery. After being introduced to Nada Alkhalaf’s pottery studio, Nour started taking classes. That was two years ago. “It’s just so mesmerizing working with pottery,” she says, “I started going two days a week, and two days weren’t enough. Now I have a pass, I go whenever I need. It’s becoming more like a club, we all just sit there and talk, like a community.” From baking cakes and sweets to taking over the wheel at pottery, Nour continues to grow her passions with ease, care, and absolute determination, she is not a person who gives up in front of a challenge, she rather strives for growth. She is now planning on opening her very own shop, which is a bigger challenge in and of itself. As she explains, “I’m afraid of failure, everyone is. At this point, everybody is expecting a real, huge thing out of me, and I don't want to meet these expectations, I want to exceed them.” And we simply cannot wait to see it all!

NUQAT SPEAKER SERIES: ELIAS SOUEIDI
Meet the architect and designer who wants to reconnect you with your past memories By bazaar staff
All in the effort to better understand, properly critique and reframe mindsets that have shaped prevalent, and even endemic, social structures in the Arab world, bazaar has partnered with Nuqat to bring you this exclusive Speaker series, which aims to introduce some of the great speakers flying in for the special 10-day conference that will take place at the Amricani Cultural Center this November. Up first, meet architect and designer Elias Soueidi. With his focus on introducing spatial and architectural artifacts developed through the experimentation and scientific investigation of systems and algorithms, Elias will surely regale audiences in Kuwait this November. In 2018, Elias won the Audi Innovation Award for 'Ruin 2 Reality', which is an application aimed at reconnecting people with their collective memories. After studying architecture between Beirut and Paris, he pursued his passion in architecture and design by participating in international research workshops and programs throughout the world - simulating different iterations of living spaces and interventions. He has developed an interest for plugins and interactions with existing structures. Soueidi believes that buildings, ruins, and urban gaps are home to constant memory formation. What would you consider to be the starting point of your career? I studied architecture and loved it, found a job and made a great start in the construction and design industry, but it is only when I started working on 'Ruin 2 Reality', that I have realized that my career wouldn't be one specific job, but rather an entrepreneurial journey. Have you faced any structural, social or personal barriers in your personal or professional journey? If so, what were they? Business in its natural form has embedded barriers and obstacles that everyone will have to face. The success model is based on a combination of trial and 40
errors merged with failures. The greatest obstacle that I have faced was to maintain the focus on my aim, and not to compromise my ideas and shift away from my goal. Was there a turning point or an experience in your life that made you change your mindset or practice elastic thinking? If there is—please take us through that process. I.e. What was your initial mindset, what was the experience you were faced with that triggered you to change your mindset and what mindset are you in now? Elastic thinking comes from having good sense of awareness of your circumstances and the combination of problem solving and decision making. I used to be determined to achieve my goals the way I had visualized them, without compromise. Getting to work with people, leading them to achieve one common goal, made me realize that a goal is not a dot nor a bullseye, but rather an area of achievements that have to be accomplished with an open and elastic mind. If you had one superpower, what would it be? I have always dreamed of being capable of
manipulating objects and elements remotely and effortlessly. What item would you put in a time capsule to help the next century understand our current time? I would give them a brain cell. I think our brains are constantly and exponentially evolving, there will be a lot to understand analyzing it. What are you looking forward to the most about coming to Kuwait? I have never been to Kuwait before, and I am eager to get to see the structure and the morphology of the city as well as meet the people and interact with them.
But the story doesn't end here! Elias answers more fun questions on www.bazaar.town, so head to our website for more exclusive content! Stay updated about Nuqat’s latest on Instagram @nuqat and visit www.nuqat.me for more information.

BACK TO LIFE, BACK TO REALITY But, what did you do all summer? By bazaar staff
Summer is almost, emphasis on almost, finished! After taking a few weeks off, we wanted to recap what we’ve managed to achieve during that time, because it’s been real, y’all. The simplest things matter when you have these days off, whether it was spending every second of it by the beach, exploring and traveling to places on your bucket-list, or simply re-organizing your life. Now, we’re back with a new issue and a refreshed mindset to see what’s next and up. The year is more than half over, so with the start of the new back to life/ school/work season, now is the perfect time to re-evaluate those priorities. Here’s what the bazaar team had to say about it: Umika Pidaparthy (Online Producer) Summer Achievement: Planned a US trip and managed to meet friends I hadn't seen in almost ten years! Also reorganized all the drawers in my kitchen! Next Up: Looking forward to Kuwait's social scene picking up in September with concerts and events! And to keep up with my reorganization agenda. :)
42
Yasmin Gamal (Mixed Media Content) Summer Achievement: I have a love/hate relationship with summer. So, not absolutely hating every minute of it was a huge achievement on my part. Next Up: After a lot of summer soul-searching by the beach I realized that an armchair would bring joy into my life. But you can't really buy an armchair without redecorating right? So I might be doing just that for the next few months. Jennifer Cádiz (Mixed Media Solutions) Summer Achievement: Got some good tan lines which are already fading, pffft! Also, I managed to catch up with old friends, and make new ones while entertaining my Instagram followers on what single, dating app life can be like in Kuwait. Next Up: Trying to fit in daily swimming, Orangetheory HIIT sessions and Kuwait Pilot Gig rowing all in training for The Great River Race 2019 in London on Saturday 14th September. Hallah Danbouh (Mixed Media Content) Summer Achievement: Travelled to new destinations and tried surfing in freezing waters! Grew my vinyl collection, and I let my no-beef policy be broken by the best and yummiest Arrayes (Middle Eastern Pitta bread triangles filled with spiced meat- a classic dish!),
only because I haven't eaten red meat in over a year! Next Up: After moving back to Kuwait last year, I have yet to unpack and reorganize my room. If September comes and goes without me doing that, then, by all means, start shaming me. Ahmed Alashab (Graphic Designer) Summer Achievement: I finally went back to Egypt after seven years of not visiting! Saw my family and my favorite human in the world, my niece who’s twelve now. Went to the North Coast (Sa7el) and never seen the water in this color in my life, so that was mind blowing! I stayed a whole month and roamed the streets of Cairo, had a blast and can’t wait till I go back. Next Up: Looking forward to continuing the journey of exploring different ways and means of developing my designs as well as my music! The journey continues.

SET THE
PACE EXPERIENCING THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS WITH THE NEW JAGUAR F-PACE By bazaar staff
44
So, we may all be back to the reality of our daily work/life routine, but that doesn’t mean that, as the temperatures cool down, Kuwait isn’t about to heat up in the fun stakes! The smooth curves and sleek lines of the Jaguar F-PACE boast of the potential power that’s ready to roar under the hood of this crossover beast. The ultimate juxtaposition of a British inspired elegant lifestyle and country pursuits, this dynamic SUV is all you need to fulfil the duties of family during the week and friends during the weekend.

Vehicle Line Director of the Jaguar F-PACE, Kevin Stride says, “This performance SUV with outstanding dynamics combines dramatic looks with a spacious interior and an exceptionally large luggage compartment’, which obviously is great for lugging around everything you’ll need to get your year started. And while your kids are in the back, you know they’ll be safe on these crazy streets due to the advanced all-wheel system and an outstanding range of activity, safety technologies including Forward Traffic Detection and Forward Vehicle Guidance. You can also comfortably carpool the school run as the 2,874mm wheelbase provides generous rear legroom, while the seat base is designed to offer maximum
comfort when seating three occupants. The positioning of the seats, together with the height of the beltline, means that even small children can enjoy a good view out of the window. The kids will further appreciate the optional fourzone climate control system and they can settle into a long journey by relaxing using the available electric recline function. For those less inclined to look out a window and more onto a screen, the rear consul features up to two 12v sockets, two USB ports, and up to eight devices can connect to WiFi. Now with the Dual View screen InControl technology on the Touch Pro infotainment system, the front passenger can tear themselves away from the driver’s GPS screen as they can view different content on the central screen simultaneously!
But once your family duties are out of the way, now it’s time to really put this SUV through its paces. On a pre-dawn drive up the coast along the Saad Al Abdulla Al Sabah road to The Mutla'a Ridge, this winner of the World Car of The Year and World Car Design of the Year awards by the World Car Awards, with its four-cylinder engine, purrs like the wild cat it is. And you don’t have to feel guilty about leaving the kids at home because the F-PACE benefits from an efficient new E-Performance diesel derivative, promising low CO2 emissions, so you can be happy knowing that this drive is more environmentally friendly than others. The Jaguar’s aluminum-intensive design boasts a lightweight construction for improved efficiency, handling and enhanced vehicle dynamics.

The high output engine delivers Jaguar’s traditionally effortless performance without compromising on running costs, and the supercharged 380PS accelerates to a scintillating 0-100mph in just over 5 seconds. Really enthusiastic autophiles will luxuriate in the personalized driving experience that they can enjoy through Configurable Dynamics. This system allows you to set up the vehicle to suit your own personal preference. So, ignore “normal” and hit the “sports” settings for the throttle response, gearbox and steering. In a subtly conspiratorial wink, your chosen settings combination is activated by engaging ‘Dynamic’ mode using the checkered flag button on the central console. 48
Adaptive Dynamics modified the F-PACE’s damper response to match the conditions and your driving style. It analyzes acceleration, cornering, throttle and brake pedal activity to optimize the suspension settings and maintain the F-PACE’s dynamism and comfort. You can thoroughly enjoy the stunning drive down south to Khiran too, where a long journey will showcase the outstanding performance of this SUV. But what about once you’ve got to your destination? There’s always that all important question, what do I do with my keys when doing something else? Noone wants to be crawling around beaches or diving looking for dropped car keys. Jaguar to the rescue with
the ingeniously advanced Activity Key. A waterproof, shockproof wristband with an integrated transponder, this pioneering wearable tech will give you the confidence to venture off surfing, kayaking or hiking, knowing your key-fob is securely locked inside your favorite Jaguar. Once you lock the vehicle, any key-fobs inside are automatically disabled so you can rest assured that on your return the F-PACE will be exactly where you left it! THE ABCS OF SCHOOL SUCCESS Make the most of this school year By Dr Susannah Joy Schuilenberg
The new school year is upon us and the Littles (and Big Littles) head off to another year of learning. For those of us with children, the calendar year actually revolves around the school year. September feels like a new beginning and most of us are totally done with the year by next May. Summer is a freebie. Well, summer is over. Along with the new school clothes, the spizzy new backpack and the coveted lunch box treats, there are some things that we can all do to set up our children, and indeed the whole family, for a successful year. Here’s my ABCs… A = Anxiety If your child struggles with any sort of anxiety about school, whether it’s about the academic requirements, the social scene, or anything else to do with the school setting, get your child help. There are techniques and strategies that can be learned and will help not only now, but for the rest of their lives. It’s not a long process to acquire the skills to manage anxiety, and it’s worth the investment. B = Bullying This epidemic of bad behavior has touched just about every child who ever attended school, whether as a victim, perpetrator, or bystander. If your child was a victim last year, get out in front of the issue NOW. If you don’t know how to teach assertiveness and nonviolent communication skills, find someone who can. If your child was a bully last year (and as difficult as it might be to admit this, not doing something about it is far worse), there are a number of reasons why children bully others and all of them are indicators of a child whose needs are not being met in a positive, consistent way. Find out what they need and provide it - you’ll probably need help with this. Lastly, if your children were bystanders; witnesses to bullying without intervening, teach them how to be “Upstanders” instead. Bullying is a systemic social problem that requires a systemic response to eradicate. Help your children be part of the solution instead of part of the problem. C = Competence & Confidence You get two for the price of one on this letter. We all want our children to be competent and confident, but if we do nothing to help them develop this perspective, the outcome of growing up might not be as wonderful as you’re hoping for. Competence and confidence are
50
developed in the crucible of trying and failing, trying again and failing better, trying again and succeeding. When we rescue our children from the effort of learning (anything) we instill a degree of learned helplessness that is the opposite of competence and confidence. Don’t pack their school bags (and don’t let the nanny do it, either!). Don’t drive their homework to school if they forgot to put in their school bag. Let your children experience the natural consequences of their choices and actions, good and bad. Help them celebrate when they persist at something until they’re successful. It is much better for our children to learn cause & effect when they are making choices about homework than to have to learn this principle when making decisions about finances or adulting. Don’t do anything for your children that they are capable of doing themselves even if the way they do a thing is not up to your standards. And on that note, don’t let the nanny do it either. s = SLEEP (ABCs, right?) There just isn’t any way to over emphasize how important sleep is for a growing, learning child. We know from research that when a child misses even one hour of sleep per night from Sunday to Wednesday, on
Thursday morning your Little may have lost up to 20 IQ points. Lack of sleep makes anyone stupid. Really. Sleep deprivation is a torture technique. If we want our children to have the best possible opportunity to be good at this learning business, we need to set them up to be successful. Negotiate with the family for evening outings to be limited to the weekends, Thursday night, or at most, one evening a week. Get your children to bed so that they get a minimum of eight hours of sleep per school night. The vast majority of us choose to pay for our children’s education because we want it to be good, so it seems paradoxical to pay for education and then send them off to school every day in a haze of fatigue and mental fog. Just sayin’. A little strategic planning could set your Littles up for a great school year. Why not take the time and do that? You won’t be sorry. CUTTING EDGE AT CUT STUDIO An invitation to a world of innovative design
By bazaar staff
Cut is a design studio specialized in providing creative design solutions. Founded back in April 2014 by Dr. Ahmed Aloumi, the story behind Cut stemmed from finding a design house that combined various design disciplines into one platform. Soon after, Ahmed Al-Shuaib, and Abdullah Al-Hamad joined Dr. Ahmed Aloumi to fulfill the big dream. The trio placed their talent-driven cards on the table to achieve one vision and one goal: To share and provide only the top-quality design solutions in the market.
52
Cut Studio mainly focuses on the design and execution of smart products, invitation cards and trophies. The first thought we had was “Is giving out trophies still a thing?” And we were proven wrong, as Ahmed Al-Shuaib himself says that in fact, crafting innovative trophies is the most popular service at their studio! Cut Studio provides four different classes of trophies; a fine-cut, fancy-cut, classiccut, and VIP trophy. Many organizations and companies will have highly benefitted from this service, as trophies arrive as the perfect celebratory item to mark a company’s milestone and achievement. But when we asked Ahmed what made it so popular, he highlighted the value of commemorating a special event or moment. He said, “It’s a memory of a relationship; it is a link between the giver and the receiver, between the organizer, and the influencer”, and he is absolutely right. It is a physical memory to have on your shelf or your desk, a memory that is refreshed and revisited with one glance. Trophies can represent many things, they symbolize a celebration, a demonstration of gratitude towards one another, and that tradition continues to live on! The same thought process applies to the creation of the smart products at this design hub. Cut Studio has been able to maintain a good reputation by providing solid, straight to the point designs that meet their clients’ needs and deliver their message smoothly. Cut Studio is famous for the design and execution of different solutions such as gift boxes, creative stationery, and giveaway items. No matter how big or small the project is, they have done it all with a sense of pride and gratitude toward all of the companies and organizations that trust them to work together. Creative industries will have a destination at Cut Studio, as the team will be able to make and transform their client's vision into a reality with Cut's skilled execution process. Consider invitations as an example, if you’re looking to steer away from the traditional and stereotypical invitation design, then setting up a consultation meeting with the Cut team will turn-up extremely fruitful. Exchanging ideas, brainstorming and narrowing down the direction of the design, including any aesthetic points, sketches or themes ultimately help towards integrating it all within the product. They will definitely provide you with the best design solution that meets your needs. One look into Cut's raw-looking workshop, which showcases the hard work, concentration, and organization this team exhibits will give anyone visiting the studio the confidence and appeal to work with them. The founders are aspiring to reach a global level of success by redefining the trophy and gift market, and by the looks of it, they are on the right path towards achieving this goal.

NUQAT SPEAKER SERIES: MONA HAMDY
Get to know the consultant looking for meaning and truth in the age of deep fakes By bazaar staff
Founder of the future-facing consultancy focused on the scientific and soulful pursuit of a thriving planet, species and ecosystems, Emotional Particle, Mona Hamdy is a force of nature who is taking the study of ethics to new heights. Founding the consultancy with Zoe Wolff of LVMG, Mona is constantly searching for meaning and truth in an age where fake likes prevail, and AI dictates everything. A Harvard University PhD candidate, she is a teaching fellow of Applied Ethics researching common morality in the data-soaked, sentient-machine age that we live in today. In 2009, Hamdy co-founded the Saudi-based Al Baydha Development Corporation with Her Royal Highness Princess Haifa Al Faisal, which kickstarted her career. A believer in the power of technology to improve the lives of the globally disadvantaged, Hamdy is working with Microsoft Research and Glen Weyl on modeling radically extended market exchange for future social growth and is the MENA region goodwill ambassador for Sir Richard Branson's Global Blockchain Business Council. She currently sits on the Bretton Woods Committee, the World Bank SDG1 Special Council, Center for Democracy and Technology and the UN Global Council on Poverty Eradication. What did you want to be when you were growing up? Ninja. Ballerina. Princess Peach. Have you faced any structural, social or personal barriers in your personal or professional journey? If so, what were they? I think if anyone hasn’t faced any barriers, they aren’t in the right field! Or at least they aren’t doing anything memorable. I’m pretty sure the most detrimental barriers on my journey have been the ones I’ve placed in my own way. Being worried about what other people think. Not staying in the present moment. Impatience. Ego. Insecurity. Lack of confidence. Those internal 54
barriers cost me more than anything someone or something has done to me. Is there a turning point or an experience in your life that made you change your mindset or practice elastic thinking? If there is—please take us through that process. I.e. what was your initial mindset, what was the experience you were faced with that triggered you to change your mindset and what mindset are you in now? We talk a lot about reframing in elastic thinking. You can argue that Western capitalist society is increasingly devoid of meaning and it’s quite literally egocentric. But most recorded wisdom from the past four millennia shows that living in community and serving one another are powerful ways of finding inner peace and purpose. Yet for the first time in the history of our species we believe that we can’t love others until we love ourselves, and love our selfies! The data shows that while our society is indeed richer and happier, we feel it is largely devoid of meaning. People feel more addicted, agitated, depressed, lonely and unfulfilled. So my focus now isn’t what makes me happy but what I find to be meaningful.
I think that, as sentient machines become increasingly present in our human lives, we will be more and more drawn to reframe our experience back toward finding purpose in serving others before ourselves… and value meaning over the other virtues in our existence. Which book changed your life? Kalila wa Dimna. It’s an 8th century allegory of royal life at court through the lives of animals. I saw the oldest copy in the world during my first visit to the Louvre as a child. I desperately wanted the animals to come to life! Illuminated manuscripts--like comic books today-- have been used for thousands of years to communicate essential truths. They’re one of my favorite art forms!

BOWL LIKE A PRO
Nothing but strikes at the Kuwait Bowling Sports Club By bazaar staff
We have a new bowling alley to hit over the weekend! The now open Kuwait Bowling Sports Club in Salmiya is huge, with an extra glassy entrance if we might add, and includes endless lanes for all the bowling lovers out there. It’s definitely the new spot to be for both amateur and professional players in Kuwait. For this bazaar team, it’s a classic past time, and the perfect way to end the work week! Situated on the ground floor, the bowling alley contains 48 lanes in total (they really did look endless to us) including a separate VIP room with ten lanes. You’ll also find Aspro on the same floor serving savory foods and specialty coffee to get that much-needed energy hit for an invincible and powerful strike! Once we came in, we gave the front desk our names and geared up by just exchanging our daily sneaks for bowling shoes, which can easily be picked up by size, as they are placed in the rows of shelves
56
right in front of us. And just in case you needed to store and keep your belongings safe and sound, you will find lockers for that purpose. When we started bowling (let’s be honest, it was more like warming up since it’s been a while), we saw a really cool feature on the screen that also included our current scores. Beyond the scorekeeping, it actually provided us with extremely detailed instructions on how to hit the leftover bowling pins. The screen suddenly turned into our guide, essentially helping us even more. Also on the same scoring screen, just on the bottom, there’s a total score for all of the above players. This is beneficial if you came with a big group, as you’ll get to compete with other lanes based on the totality of these points. Knowing us, we can never say no to a challenging competition. And, it’s not considered bragging if you can back it up! The Kuwait Bowling Sports Club also offers several bowling related services, such as training, which is perfect for ambitious amateurs looking to take their bowling game to the next level! When we took a look inside the VIP room, complete with its beautifully lit
neon lanes and comfortable seating areas, all we kept thinking of is, “When’s the party going to start?”. The manager also told us that the room is up for a private booking, and you can bring anything with you, even party stations. Another extra point for the bowling spot lies in their prices, it only cost us 1.5 Kuwaiti Dinars per person to play one round, during off peak hours and if you’re looking to bowl in the VIP room, it’ll only cost four Kuwaiti Dinars, excluding the fees for private bookings. In general, we had a lovely and exciting experience bowling there. It was a very much needed chill spot to relax and bowl with my fellow colleagues, and I personally loved the hype-up whenever any of us hit a strike! Just one last tip, if you weren’t lucky with strikes, keep persisting that the next one will be a strike, put it out there in the universe, and trust me, you WILL get it in there one way or another. If not, pull up the easy bars and take a go at it! For more information, follow @kuwaitbowling_ on Instagram.

70 YEARS OF SUPERFAST CARS
A quick history of Ferrari’s most iconic cars from the 550 Maranello to the 812 Superfast, the fastest production car yet By bazaar staff
Designing and manufacturing sleek yet powerful 12-cylinder engine sports cars is an amazing feat, and to be able to do it continuously for seven decades is something only Ferrari can lay a claim to. In March 2017, Ferrari kicked off its 70th year anniversary with the world premiere of its most powerful production car yet, the 800-cv 812 superfast. The unveiling of this flagship v12 berlinetta, the car itself is an ode to Ferrari’s rich v12 heritage and its roots in the founding of the company. The Ferrari V12 has a lineage worth tracing, without which, the truly modern motoring icon; the 812 Superfast would not have been created. 550 Maranello (1996 – 2002) After 30 months of development, the Ferrari 550 Maranello was presented in July 1996 at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany. The 550 Maranello marked Ferrari's return to a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout for its 2-seater 12-cylinder model, 23 years after the 365 GTB/4 Daytona had been replaced by the mid-engine Berlinetta Boxer. The model name referred to the 5.5-litres total engine displacement and to the town of Maranello, home to the Ferrari headquarters and factory. Both the exterior and interior design were executed by Pininfarina, the favored designer of the time. Frame and main engine components were shared with the
58
2+2 Ferrari 456, although at 2,500 mm (98.4 in) the 550's wheelbase was 100 mm (3.9 in) shorter. The 550 used a front-engine, rear-wheel drive transaxle layout, with the six-speed gearbox located at the rear axle together with the limited slip differential. It achieved a top speed of 320km/h and could accelerate from a standstill to 100km/h in 4.4 seconds. 575M Maranello (2002 – 2006) In 2002 the 550 was replaced by the 575M Maranello, an all-around improved version fitted with a larger 5.75-litre engine. The increased engine capacity resulted in an increase in both power and torque. The letter M, an abbreviation of “modificato” (modified), underlined the fact that changes had been wrought to all areas of the model’s performance which included the introduction of an F1-style gearbox, a first for a 12-cylinder Ferrari road car.
Ferrari sought to retain the balance and sober looks of the 550 Maranello which had ensured it the status of instant classic. Modifications were limited to those regarding technical changes: different shape and size for the air intakes in the new front end of the car, with refinement of the aerodynamic and fluid-dynamic efficiency and a new treatment for the front spoiler. On the aerodynamic front, Ferrari’s engineers improved airflow around the wheels by introducing small flaps to reduce drag, while the underbody was designed to generate downforce while reducing drag. The new V12 engine in the 575M Maranello enjoyed a maximum power output of 515 bhp (379 Kw) at 7,250 rpm and a maximum torque of 60 kgm at 5,250 rpm (588.6 Nm,), with an increase in midrange torque of 1.5 kgm between 1,000 and 4,000 rpm compared to the 550 Maranello.
599 GTB Fiorano Image on the left: 812 Superfast 599 GTB Fiorano, (2006 – 2012) Fiorano after the circuit Ferrari uses to hone the performance of its track and road cars; GTB as in Gran Turismo Berlinetta after the most famous Ferrari berlinettas ever built; and 599 to reflect the displacement of its V12 engine divided by 10. The stunning new all-aluminum two-seater was unveiled at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, raising the bar for excellence in the sports car world. The new Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano sprinted from 0 to 100 km/h in an astonishing 3.7 seconds and boasted a top speed in excess of 330 km/h. However, it was the new model's uniquely innovative content that guaranteed superior driving pleasure, handling and sportiness. The technical specification of the engine spoke for itself: 5999 cm3 displacement, a specific power output of 103 hp/liter. F12berlinetta (2012 – 2017) When releases at Geneva Motor show in 2012, the F12berlinetta turned heads, as Ferrari’s most powerful product to date. Known as the F12, the F12berlinetta replaced the 599 family. Sensuous design and aerodynamics - two automotive goals often at odds - were 100 percent synchronized in F12berlinetta. Pininfarina and Ferrari Style Center went above and beyond all expectations with brilliant style and balanced proportions. Though it was aesthetically original, signature elements from the grand Ferrari V12 history were held onto. Despite compact exterior
575 M Maranello dimensions, the F12berlinetta offered superb cabin space and comfort. The F12berlinetta uses the smart Aero Bridge where the hood and front fenders meet to create downforce. In a similar vein, Active Brake Cooling opens air ducts only when the brakes reach a threshold temperature. The result was extreme aero efficiency, a fact borne out by the F12berlinetta’s drag coefficient of just 0.299, while also generating 271 pounds of downforce at 125 mph. The naturally aspirated 6.3-liter Ferrari V12
engine in the F12berlinetta won the International Engine of the Year Award 2013 in the Best Performance category and Best Engine above 4.0 liters. The F12berlinetta was named "The Supercar of the Year 2012" by car magazine Top Gear. 812 Superfast The 812 Superfast ushered in a new era in Ferrari 12-cylinder history, building on the invaluable legacies of the F12berlinetta and F12tdg. Ferrari F12berlinetta exclusive Ferrari in the range: an uncompromising sports car that will deliver an exhilarating driving experience both on the road and the track. Powered by a new 6.5-litre V12, the 812 Superfast is the benchmark in the mid-front-engine sports car segment, achieving its maximum power output at 8,500 rpm, which guarantees the kind of thrilling top-end performance that is an exclusive characteristic of Ferrari’s V12s. Maximum torque is 718 Nm @ 7,000 rpm, a significant 80% of which is already available at 3,500 rpm, improving drivability and pick-up at low revs. The 812 Superfast is striking for both its highly innovative design and aero package, as well as its unparalleled handling. It is the first Ferrari to introduce Electric Power Steering (EPS) which, in line with Ferrari tradition, is used to fully exploit the potential of the car in terms of performance. The introduction of the Virtual Short Wheelbase 2.0 system (PCV) combines the electric front-wheel steering assistance with the mechanical concept based on tire dimensions and the rear-wheel 60

NUQAT SPEAKER SERIES: FADI ZAGHMOUT
Meet the author who utilizes elastic thinking to advocate for gender equality By bazaar staff
Constantly pushing the envelope with his novels, author Fadi Zaghmout is a gender activist and blogger who will surely enhance our collective understanding of elastic thinking. His first two novels The Bride of Amman and Heaven on Earth were bestsellers in the Middle East and started off his career as an author, and his third novel Laila and the Lamb, a feminist thriller, was published by Egyptian publisher Kotob Khan in July 2018. Fadi holds an MA in creative writing and critical thinking from Sussex University in the UK. What are you looking forward to the most about coming to Kuwait? I am really looking forward to attending the 2019 Nuqat conference. It’s my first time to participate and I am very excited about having the opportunity to be on stage to talk about my upcoming novel, which tries to imagine a parallel society where gender is divided based on height, rather than gender. It’s also my first time in Kuwait and I look forward to learning more about the country and the local culture and its people. Which book changed your life? It is definitely Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson. It’s a small book but very impactful. I got it as a gift from a colleague at a time I was feeling down, unhappy with my career, and feeling that "my cheese" was about to run out. It motivated me to start reading again at the time, and empowered me to face my fears and pursue my dreams. 62
What did you want to be when you were growing up? At one point I was fascinated with genetics and I was dreaming about becoming a genetic engineer when I grow up. I wanted to learn more about the code of life and contribute to human knowledge in the field. This desire came back to me when I was writing my second book Heaven on Earth that tries to read a nearby future when science defeats ageing. It still haunts me from time to time, and maybe one day, I would have the means to delve into that field, learn, and hopefully add to it. Who knows?! Is there a turning point or an experience in your life that made you change your mindset or practice elastic thinking? If there is—please take us through that process. I.e. what was your initial mindset, what was the experience you were faced with that triggered you to change your mindset and what mindset are you in now? I am not sure if there was a specific turning point, I guess it was more of an accumulative experience. I recall growing up in a private school in Amman with liberal teaching views. My sister was a year younger than me, and we grew up together, becoming very
close during our teenage years. You know, that age is very sensitive, and it’s the age where one's gender identity starts to shape up. As a young man, I was receiving all of these cultural messages about honor, and the role of men in society. And I remember myself at one point trying to comment on my sister's choices of dressing - to be more conservative. Thank God, I had a strong willed sister, who wouldn't tolerate my interference and stood up for herself telling me to mind my own business. That made me review my behavior, and my way of thinking, and grow to understand that if I want to be a good brother, I'd better fight and protect her freedom to choose for herself, rather than enforce inherited outdated cultural values out of fear of others perception of my gender identity.
But the story doesn't end here! Fadi answers more fun questions on www.bazaar.town, so head to our website for more exclusive content! Stay updated about Nuqat’s latest on Instagram @nuqat and visit www.nuqat.me for more information.

LET’S BE OFFENSIVE… In the choice of topic and how we approach it By George Tarabay
“Back to school” is a term used by parents oh-so-dearly to remind their kids that misery is soon upon them. It is also known in unofficial business lingo, as “Ka-ching!” season, but that’s for another article. What’s dreadful and abysmal about those two words and that one preposition (I know, linguistics and stuff) is the fact that parents often use it to prep their kids for what they hate the most about their own lives: Routine. It’s an indirect form of any parent’s revenge on the system that created their nine-to-five reality. Therefore, allow me to set the record straight on what should really offend you in 2019. No, not jokes on feminism or people’s personal stuff, or that post about deforestation. What should really offend you, aside from you doing nothing about the things that you feel strongly about, is that the world is moving fast, uber-fast, and that our educational system and curricula are still stuck in the 40s of the last century. Nowadays, job creation is entirely different. There are new jobs today that were literally unheard of just five years ago. The term “Social Media Specialist” would be explained years ago as a person who specializes in what food to serve to socialize best when around a TV set in a group gathering. But as you are reading this, there are two twelve-year-old kids in their bedroom somewhere plotting their own application that will soon become “a unicorn” and soon after, an entire industry. We live in the age of fast-track consumerism and distorted attention. It is accelerating much faster than the rate at which we’re exhausting our natural resources. We’re not breeding a generation capable of adapting, and accommodating the excessive speed of advancement happening around them. It is a known fact that in 2019, programming is a spoken language: Your phone speaks it, your computer speaks it, yet most kids don’t. At an age where our refrigerators have AI tech built-in, it frightens me to know that the next generation is not being prepared at school to speak the language of the new millennia. Yet, what gives me a tiny ray of hope is seeing that some kids nowadays, are using the highway of information to their advantage to pick up skills that their schools are simply too old to even comprehend. While, most glued-to-the-screenkids today bear a strong similarity to the people in isolated pods in Wall-E, there are an elite few who simply rose above consuming and opted to consume to the advantage of their skill-set growth. 64
We cannot raise kids that are only encouraged to become only one of three things: a lawyer, an engineer or a doctor. This isn’t to say that these professions are becoming obsolete, but we can’t isolate the idea of a successful career choice simply based on these most encouraged professions. Those days are far gone, those days are in memoriam of a very chronologically near but technologically far era. Yet, what we can shape kids into, is developing critical thinking skills and research methodologies to become problem solvers, because as this economy progresses, one day they would have to solve one big problem related to their own existence and continuity. It’s important to teach history to learn the mistakes of the past, but we are not teaching kids about the future, we’re keeping them solemnly engaged in expired stories rather than opening their eyes to the possibilities of their
dreams in the future. We teach them grammar, but with the aim of mastering the language in order for them to pitch a good sales deck. We teach them the sciences, but not how to apply them or make use of them on an everyday basis. We have a lot of changes to make for the new generation in our school systems, so we can give them a fighting chance against a monster that creates their relevance in a second but soon after makes them obsolete in a millisecond. So, let’s revisit what we are teaching. Let us, the adults in charge, get back to school, and change it for the better.

STUDIO AUTUMN WINTER 2019
Magical Realism transforms female power dressing into something aspirational By bazaar staff
H&M Studio just redefined power-dressing for women in their Autumn/Winter 2019 Studio collection. Channeling a dramatic mood of feminine spirituality, the H&M Studio muse is sharpening her senses and seeking out the magic in the everyday urban landscape – all while wearing a striking combination of sharp tailoring, silken dresses and heritage knitwear. The collection is the brand's most fashion-forward offering. Developed by an in-house design team at the brand’s Stockholm atelier, the limited-edition collections are unveiled biannually, in line with traditional international fashion schedules.
Every piece is designed to empower the 24/7 modern woman. Step one: Embrace the dark side, with classic black suiting. Step two: Work in some sensuous shirts and languid dresses. Step three: indulge in status sweater dressing. And finally: For after-dark, slip into dressed-down sequins and mismatched talismanic earrings. “H&M Studio is always a versatile proposition and the A/W19 collection is stand-out in that respect: it offers a seductive mix of masculine wardrobe classics with soft knitwear and feminine lingerie pieces that will make a modern woman feel really grounded and secure. In a world where everything feels unstable, we need magic more than ever – this collection is about empowering women to feel great from dawn till dusk,” said Ann-Sofie Johansson, Creative Advisor at H&M.
66
The collection features many strong key pieces that will help you build a timeless and powerful wardrobe. From the strong-shouldered Italian wool coat, the tailored wool suit with its nipped-in waist, tailored leather trousers, protective padded down nylon outerwear, elegant cotton and viscose blouses, to the fly-in-the-wind, recycled polyester dresses. The color palette is an autumnal mix of moss green, acid yellow and earthy brown – with splashes of tomato red and mineral silver designed to thrill. The thoughtfulness that went into the design process is further amplified by the use of the right fabrics. Durable wool-blends are the star of the collection, with lambswool, alpaca and cashmere blends worked into premium quality sweaters, dresses and blanket knits. Butter-soft leather features in shirts, jackets and boots. Recycled polyester and viscose add lightness to airy dresses and pleated skirts, alongside organic cotton T-shirts. Meanwhile, whimsical prints, designed in-house, feature delicate brush-strokes and bold stripes, and have an understated, organic feel that invites closer inspection. No outfit is complete without the right accessories. Bi-color leather knee-high boots set a sophisticated tone, along with directional tractor-soled, second-skin, thigh-high boots that will instantly transport a look to now. Padded silk scarves and knitted hoods in wool add a playful edge. Mis-matched earrings featuring suspended trinkets play into the magical feeling: think of them as talismans, gathered on urban adventures. Check out the online version of this article for an interview with Ann-Sofie Johansson H&M’s Creative Advisor and her thoughts on the collection. The collection is available at H&M First Avenue and Grand Avenue - The Avenues starting September 5. For more information visit the kw.hm.com.

TIDYING UP
Get your home in order in a weekend
By bazaar staff
As a child I used to resent it when my mom made me tidy up my closet, but as an adult I find cleaning up to be quite the rewarding experience. Going home to a clean apartment is one of life’s greatest delights. While I am not a natural at keeping everything where it should be, I've discovered that it is a skill that can be learned. While I haven’t been in school for longer than I care to admit, I still think of September as the time to organize things. It is a second chance for people who missed their January resolution deadline. I read Marie Kondo’s book, The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying Up a couple of years ago and found many of her tips quite useful. The book was so inspirational that Netflix turned it into a reality show. While my dining room table is still usually a mess, but my sock drawer has never been neater. I am already planning my annual clean-up during the first weekend of this month, and I have some tips 68
that can help even Little Miss Messy to conquer the mountain of mismatched socks: Plan Ahead It takes time and energy to get organized. So, go ahead and block out the day in your calendar. Dedicate the day or maybe even the entire weekend to tackling the task. Make a list of all the problem areas you want to take on first so you don’t miss spots. Write down your goals for the great cleanup that will end all cleanups so that you stay motivated. Make it fun Turn up the volume on your favorite Spotify playlist so that you can dance along while you trash all of those unused knickknacks that just collect dust and have no real purpose in your life. If you are not too embarrassed invite a friend or family member to help you out. Who knows, you might even bond over your messy kitchen cabinet. Call The Pros If all else fails, hire a professional organizer. There is no shame in asking for help from someone who knows what they are doing. The reclaimed space alone is worth the expense. There are a couple of locals who might be able to help like @theminimalsort and @tidygiraffe on Instagram.
Go Shopping No, I am not suggesting you buy more stuff just for the sake of it but finding the right baskets and boxes can really help you store your belongings more efficiently and can help you easily see and find the things you are looking for. Once you have designated a container for socks, it becomes easier to just put your clean folded laundry there every time instead of shoving them into random drawers. IKEA is one of the best places to find versatile storage solutions. Another fantastic source is Daiso, where you can also find vacuum bags for storing clothing and blankets that you won’t be using this season. Beat The Guilt Many of us feel bad about throwing away things that are still usable. But no one said you need to trash things. Donate or recycle instead. There are many charities that will take everything from clothing to electric appliances and deliver them to people who need them. Once you are done, you can sit back and relax and enjoy the fruits of your hard work. The trick now is to make sure that you don’t slip back into old habits. Now that your living room is amazingly free of clutter, you can invite your friends over next weekend.

DKNY TURNS 30
New Yorkers, Halsey and The Martinez Brothers X DKNY to celebrate By bazaar staff
Fall 2019 marks the 30th birthday of DKNY and its innovative, genre-defining approach to style — a revolution at its founding and a force three decades in. To celebrate, DKNY pays homage to the creative spirit of New York with a campaign and video featuring hometown talent Halsey and The Martinez Brothers While the brand has deep roots in the past, they have chosen to look to the future instead. The seasonal campaign is rooted in the here-andnow featuring powerful, graphic portraits of native New Yorkers Halsey and The Martinez Brothers photographed by Amy Troost and styled by Carlos Nazario. Having long since accomplished its mission of providing progressive yet pragmatic wardrobe staples for DKNY fans and their multifaceted lives, the brand presents its fall 2019 campaign as a series of quintessential New York stories from respected and influential cultural figures. Self-made and self-assured, Halsey and The Martinez Brothers radiate their cool confidence, irreverent style, and pure talent in each image captured. Together, they embody the
70
creativity that drives young people to the city— a place in which, even today, impossible dreams can be realized. In the campaign, Halsey and The Martinez Brothers sport the most directional pieces from the DKNY Fall 2019 collection: checked suiting, raw denim and leopard-print athleisure for her; fresh tailoring, classic outerwear and easy essentials for him. With a stark black-andwhite aesthetic accented by a bold red logo, the imagery references DKNY’s innovative Heritage campaigns of the 1990s. “DKNY is the spirit of New York. It’s diversity and drive. It’s hard work and a pinch of destiny. They say if a bee strays too far from its hive, it will die. DKNY keeps my home in my heart, and the magic in my mind. It’s an honor to be a part of their 30th birthday.” Halsey stated. Halsey’s punk sense of beauty and casual outspokenness have established her as a fearless voice of a generation, while the recent billboard number one single “Without Me” has confirmed her a global powerhouse. She is the epitome of grace under fire commanding the untamed forces of the city and paving a path for positive change, granting Halsey her New York stripes.
From the Bronx to Parisian runways to exotic islands, The Martinez Brothers have converted their high fashion credibility into global DJ superstardom, now producing original music of their own and serving as regulars on the roster at many of the world’s most acclaimed nightclubs. DKNY's aesthetic has always been a reflection of New York. And there is no better place or time to celebrate three decades of DKNY's fashion journey like New York Fashion Week this September. DKNY will host a blockbuster 30th birthday party with a DJ set by the Martinez Brothers and a performance by Halsey.

THE MOST POWERFUL CAYENNE: A PLUG-IN HYBRID
Discover the top-of-the-range SUV model with 680 hp and purely electric range of up to 40 kilometers
By bazaar staff
Porsche constantly pushes the envelope when it comes to innovation, and the company’s strategy when it comes to its powerful cars is inimitable. Porsche continues to consistently focus on e-mobility, with the Cayenne range following the Panamera series in now featuring a plug-in hybrid as its new flagship model. The best part? You can now order your very own model in Kuwait! The selection of the most powerful Cayennes includes the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid and the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupé. Both models feature a system output of 680 hp (500 kW) from the intelligent interaction of a four-liter V8 engine (550 hp / 404 kW) and an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission (136 hp / 100 kW). Both models accelerate from a standing start to 100 km/h in a whopping 3.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 295 km/h. Behind all of this incredible power,
72
however, is a strategy backed by the highest level of efficiency, as the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid and Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupé can drive for up to 40 kilometers with zero local emissions. The average NEDC consumption is 3.9–3.7 l/100 km (fuel) and 19.6–18.7 kWh/100 km (electric). In addition to these two top models, the hybrid range from Porsche now includes the new Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupé with system power of 462 hp (340 kW), torque of 700 Nm, and an electric range of up to 43 kilometers. Just in case you missed the first launch, the Cayenne E-Hybrid, which now features a gasoline particulate filter, is available to order again. Speeds of up to 135 km/h with just electric power Like all Porsche plug-in hybrids, the new top-of-therange model in the Cayenne family is also one of the sportiest vehicles in the premium segment because of its hybrid powertrain. In the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid models, the electric motor is located between the V8 engine and the eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission. The two motors are interconnected via a separating clutch inside the hybrid module, referred to as the
Electric Clutch Actuator (ECA). In E-Power driving mode, the electric motor can, on its own, propel the vehicle up to a maximum speed of 135 km/h. It can also be used in the other modes for an additional power boost. These modes can be selected via the standard Sport Chrono Package (Hybrid Auto, Sport and Sport Plus). And to ensure maximum power, Porsche has taken this boost strategy from the 918 Spyder super sports car. The lithium-ion battery is installed underneath the loadspace floor and has a capacity of 14.1 kWh. The high-voltage battery can be fully charged within 2.4 hours with the standard 7.2 kW onboard AC charger when using a 400-volt connection with a 16amp fuse. The charging process takes six hours from a conventional domestic socket with a rating of 230 volts and 10 amps. Charging can also be scheduled via Porsche Communication Management (PCM). Roll stabilization system, air suspension, and ceramic brakes as standard The Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid and the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupé come with extensive factory-fitted equipment as standard. This includes all the bells
and whistles, such as the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) electric roll stabilization system, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) rear-axle differential lock, the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) high-performance brake system, 21-inch lightweight alloy wheels in Aero design including wheel arch extensions in body color, Power Steering Plus, and the Sport Chrono Package. Rest assured that the adaptive three-chamber air suspension, including Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), ensures a broad spectrum of typical Porsche driving dynamics and a comfortable ride. Up to 22-inch lightweight alloy wheels and rear-axle steering are also available as optional extras. Full connectivity and auxiliary air conditioning as standard What’s a cruise in a gorgeous Cayenne without all the fun tech that makes your cruise an unforgettable one? All of the Cayenne models include full connectivity as standard, enabling online navigation with real-time traffic information and smart online voice control. Additional options for all Cayenne derivatives when the new model year start include wireless Apple CarPlay,
new USB-C ports and a smartphone storage tray with inductive charging function. All hybrid models from Porsche have auxiliary air conditioning as standard. This can be remote-controlled directly via the PCM and enables the vehicle to be heated and cooled even when the ignition is not switched on. Both looks and safety are never compromised with the Cayenne, as all Cayenne models feature LED headlights, a cruise control system, camera-based pedestrian protection and Park Assist at the front and rear – including a rear-view camera system in the Cayenne Coupé. Optional extras include LED matrix beam headlights, a head-up display, lane keeping assist, road sign recognition, active lane guidance, junction assistant and emergency braking. A double debut: Cayenne Coupé as a V6 and V8 hybrid With the Cayenne Coupé, Porsche has added an even sportier variant to its successful SUV line-up. Highlights of the coupé include sharper lines with a unique roof and rear section, an adaptive rear spoiler, a rear seat bench with the characteristics of two individual seats, and two different roof designs: a panoramic fixed glass
roof as standard and an optional carbon roof. Like the SUV, the coupé version is now available in two different hybrid versions; the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine and a 3.0-litre V6 turbo engine. The new Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupé has a system output of 462 hp (340 kW), and a system torque of 700 Nm. In conjunction with the standard Sport Chrono Package, it sprints from a standing start to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds (5.0 seconds with the lightweight sports packages) and has a top speed of 253 km/h. The average consumption according to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) is 3.2–3.1 l/100 km (fuel) and 18.7 – 17.7 kWh/100 km (electric). The purely electric range is up to 43 kilometers. All four different hybrid versions of the Cayenne are now available to order. Price details can be obtained at the nearest Porsche Centre. A BRIEF APPRECIATION OF DWAYNE ‘THE ROCK’ JOHNSON He’s a charmer whose charisma is as big as his biceps By Moira Macdonald
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson returns to screens in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, an impressively doubleampersanded title that suggests that the Fast & Furious franchise is now just lying around waving a hand and “presenting” things, like an imperious spokesmodel. There is, of course, nothing laid-back about the “F & F” franchise, in which people do things like steal cars from speeding trains, and which will cause you to drive home in your sad little Honda feeling very non-badass. In honor of the return of Luke Hobbs, the impossibleto-kill character Johnson’s now played in five increasingly and enjoyably frenetic installments (the last one was so fast and furious it even had Helen Mirren in a cameo), here’s a quick appreciation of the massive wrestlerturned-actor. Johnson always plays more or less the same character — and he always saves the day. The men Johnson plays are masters of transportation. There is nothing that a character played by Johnson can’t drive. (In 2010’s Faster, his character is appropriately named “Driver.”) While he
74
mostly sticks with cars in the “F & F” movies — which he drives with a cool nonchalance, like the vehicle is a mild annoyance that must be dealt with — he is also good with helicopters (San Andreas, Rampage), boats (San Andreas), construction cranes (Skyscraper), taxis (Return to Witch Mountain), and, probably, Quidditch brooms, unicycles and space shuttles. Just wait. Johnson’s characters have superhuman powers. To my knowledge, Johnson has never played an actual superhero, but he nonetheless can fly. Watch him in Skyscraper, jumping from said construction crane — a mere mortal would plummet, but Johnson soars. (To be fair, he tries something similar in The Other Guys and things don’t work out quite so well, but that was 2010 and he wasn’t quite as big a star yet. Superpowers take time.) He is also an animal whisperer (Rampage), a manly time traveler (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), and a person capable of redirecting a torpedo with one hand (Fate of the Furious). Somebody give this man a cape. Oh, and my editor wants me to add that he is capable of doing distracting gyrations with his pectoral muscles (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island), as shown in a clip (titled “Pec Pop of Love!”) from the film. I … might have watched this video. They cannot be contained. If you are a character played by Dwayne Johnson, and you are in a hospital with your arm in a cast and you want to get back to
action, you simply flex your muscles and off pops the cast, just like that. (This happens in Furious 7, but I bet Johnson does it at parties.) If you try to imprison him, he will throw the guards around like tennis balls (Fate of the Furious); if you think an earthquake of massive proportions can stop him from saving his family AND getting his ex-wife back while he’s at it (San Andreas), you haven’t seen enough of his movies. They always know what to say. Let’s be honest here: Johnson is not the most nuanced actor working today. (His range is basically a combination of Seething Wide-Eyed Glare, Serious I-Got-You Nod and Quietly Smoldering Intensity, interspersed with the odd roguish grin.) But this is a man who can assure a child who’s about to walk across a plank 100 stories above Hong Kong that everything will be OK (it’s in Skyscraper), and you believe him, absolutely. This is also a man who, in Furious 7, announces his arrival with “Woman, I am the cavalry.” Bow down. In case of disaster, he’s your man. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, but when the apocalypse comes, I hope I’m standing near The Rock. Because he will not only prevail against all odds (Enormous mutant animals! Towers aflame! Tsunami! Vin Diesel!), but he will make you feel better while he does it. This is Johnson’s great gift as a performer: he’s a charmer whose charisma is as big as his biceps … and that is pretty big indeed.

LEARN TO MOVE IT, MOVE IT Even if your genes boost your risk of obesity By Melissa Healy
You can run away from your fat genes, and you can waltz right on by a hereditary risk of gaining weight. But it’s a little less clear that mimicking funky moves in front of a video game console will protect you from a genetic vulnerability to becoming obese. So finds a new study that identifies six ways people with unlucky bits of DNA can stave off the accumulation of excess pounds. Years of research have revealed that inheritance — the fine print transmitted in our DNA — accounts for somewhere between 21% and 84% of the average person’s propensity to become obese. So if there is one takeaway from genetic studies of obesity, it’s this: Even if your parents saddled you with a passel of fat genes, there’s still plenty you can do to counter their influence. But what, besides a lifetime of ascetic eating, actually works? The new study finds that exercise does, and it gets very specific about which forms of regular exercise can ward off obesity in those with more than their fair share of the gene variants that make excessive weight gain more likely. Combing through a trove of data maintained by Taiwan’s central Biobank, researchers found that fat-
78
prone residents who jogged regularly were the most likely to overcome their inherited vulnerability to obesity. They also found that mountain climbing, long yoga sessions, ballroom dancing, “exercise walking” and even plain-old walking helped ward off a body-mass index that defines obesity. The results were published in the journal PLOS Genetics. The researchers, from National Taiwan University, collected genetic data, a wide range of health measures and self-reported exercise patterns from 18,424 Taiwanese citizens between 30 and 70 years old. Roughly 58% of them said they did not exercise regularly, while 42% reported routine exercise. While variants of nearly 100 genes have been linked to obesity in people of European descent, those risk factors might not apply to Taiwan’s Han Chinese population. So the researchers used a panel of 50 obesity-related gene variants and divided their subjects into four groups, ranging from those least genetically prone to pack on fat to those with the greatest vulnerability. Even after accounting for other powerful influences on body size and fat mass — including educational attainment, gender and age — a habit of exercise was powerfully protective. At every point along the continuum of vulnerability, those who said they exercised regularly had a lower BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference and proportion of body fat than did those who did not exercise.
Jogging, an activity reported by only 12% of the large study’s 7,652 physically active participants, had the added benefit of helping to keep participants’ ratio of fat-to-lean tissue mass in check, and it had a significant effect in reducing their average hip circumference. Not so effective, the researchers found, were a variety of exercise regimens that are popular in Taiwan. Those included swimming, bicycling and stretching, as well as tai chi, qigong and “Dance Dance Revolution.” That jogging and mountain climbing countered a genetic vulnerability to become fat may not be such a surprise. But the results about “Dance Dance Revolution” are likely to disappoint its legions of devoted fans. In 2012, the company behind “DDR”, Japan’s Konami Entertainment, launched a classroom edition of its video game, which lets up to 48 students dance in unison to the same song on wireless controller mats that judge the execution of their moves. In collaboration with United Healthcare, Konami introduced “DDR” to American classrooms in Florida, Georgia, Texas and Southern California to get kids up and moving. A 2013 study found that “exer-games” such as “DDR” could help young children, at least, meet government recommendations for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Photo by Banter Snaps on Unsplash.

How Who What Wear cofounder Katherine Power turned an online fashion community into a brand factory By Elizabeth Segran
Target recently debuted Versed, a 19-piece skincare line free of 1,300 toxic ingredients, priced at less than $20 per item, and packaged in sleek mint-green, teal-blue, and pink tubes and bottles. It's the latest brainchild of Katherine Power, the cofounder and CEO of Clique Brands, which includes 16 million-person online fashion community Who What Wear and a number of retail lines. Power began her career as an editor at Elle magazine, but found a new media-business model in turning reader insights into e-commerce and products. In 2016, she cocreated the Who What Wear clothing line, sold exclusively at Target. In 2017, she partnered with Target on its in-house activewear brand, Joylab. Now she's applying her trove of consumer insights to Versed, the first spin-off company of Who What Wear. Here's her playbook for launching affordable, breakthrough brands. Talk to your (future) customers Power has a six-person team exclusively focused on studying data from the Who What Wear audience (including 3 million Instagram followers and a handful of closed Facebook groups) to spot market opportunities. Many of Versed's core characteristics were gathered from user activity on the site. "Women were searching for things like 'acne and anti-aging,' " Power says. "No [brand] was addressing how you combine solutions to solve skincare issues." In response, Versed launched with products that can be used individually or together, such as a firming serum and a complexion solution. Four months before launching, Versed created a 2,159-member Facebook group dedicated to skincare, which yielded specific product suggestions that Versed is currently working on--such as a non-irritating retinol. Embrace the middleman With minimalist packaging, Versed's products look at home on Instagram next to direct-to-consumer brands such as Away, Glossier, and Warby Parker--but Power turned the typical DTC model on its head. Versed debuted in 1,400 Target stores and on its website. It has since rolled out to e-commerce site Revolve and will begin selling directly to customers via its own website in October. Power believes that the majority of Americans still get to know brands offline (a Who What Wear survey found that 94% of respondents discover skincare in-store) and going through a big-box retailer makes her products widely accessible. "Women in the middle of the country have the same appetite for style and quality as women on the coasts," she says. 80
"Largely, they have only had access to these trends through online retail, and a lot of their discovery is still happening in real life." Versed's packaging, product names, and even the models in its ad campaigns were focus-grouped with the Who What Wear community to ensure the line would stand out in Target. The brand's e-commerce site will use more traditional DTC marketing tactics (sleek visuals, education on ingredients, social media engagement) while providing an easy way for Target converts to replenish each month. Don't skimp on the good stuff DTC brands often highlight how they can bring luxury products to consumers for less by cutting out retailers. But Power has found that her Target partnerships help her elevate her products. Even though Versed avoids 1,300 typical cosmetic ingredients (those that are banned in Europe), it was able to deliver safe, highquality formulations at under $20 per item--while premium brands such as Beautycounter and Drunk Elephant charge two or three times more--because the products are made at scale. "There are certain cost efficiencies that occur by buying in such large quantities," Power says. And while beauty brands are notorious for using just enough of an expensive
ingredient to list it on the label, Versed instead uses high doses of more common ingredients that are safe and effective, including eucalyptus oil, aloe, vitamin C, and glycolic acid. Leverage your loyal fans Power credits the Who What Wear site's democratic, affordable approach to style with helping her reach women outside major city markets. A recent survey Clique conducted of 1,000 women across the U.S. found that a quarter of those between the ages of 18 and 49 are familiar with Who What Wear, and 65% have been aware of the site for two or more years. Much of her company's growth, Power says, has come from readers who have big followings in their own right-of Who What Wear's 3 million Instagram followers, more than 80,000 have 2,000 or more followers of their own. They often serve as advocates for Clique's brands. "It's the dental hygienist who always has the best lip-gloss color or the paralegal with the best handbag," she says. "By focusing on her, we reach the rest of the masses. There's a finite amount of women who are going to seek out fashion and beauty content, and for the women who aren't going to do that, they're getting recommendations from that friend."

MASERATI 2019 CHINA GRAND TOUR By bazaar staff
A tribute to 15 years in China with a 10,000 KM journey Maserati took a long, and stunningly scenic tour around China, clocking just under 10,000km. The Grand Tour was meant to celebrate the brand's 15th anniversary in the Chinese market and to pay tribute to the traditions and cultural heritage that China and Italy share. Starting in Shanghai, a city famed for its harmonious melding of Chinese and Western culture, the Grand Tour lasted about 40 days, and welcomed around 380 Maserati customers and journalists (including the kick-off event). The tour travelled four routes, climbed 16 mountains and crossed 70 cities in ten provinces, creating an M-shaped journey across the country. China’s stunning landscapes provided the ideal backdrop and manifested the power, luxury and comfort of the Maserati Quattroporte, Levante and Ghibli. The distinct Chinese culture and ancient craftmanship echoed Maserati’s long history and endless pursuit of Italian excellence. 2019 is a landmark year for Maserati, as it marks a double anniversary: The 105th anniversary of the legendary brand and its 15-year-journey in China. For 105 years, the iconic Italian luxury vehicle brand has been crafting driving experiences that combine performance, comfort, style, refinement, and enjoyment of life. To celebrate the double anniversary, Maserati designed four exclusive routes that matched China’s striking natural landscapes and unique culture
84
with the distinct Italian flair and elegance of the Maserati brand. The participants crossed the peaks and rivers of the Yangtze River area, visited cultural sites to discover ancient wisdom, followed the historic Silk Road to learn about its significance in linking cultures of the East and West, and traversed the vast and breath-taking mountain landscapes of Western China. The Grand Tour was led by Maserati’s 2019 model range, with the Quattroporte, Levante and Ghibli each revealing their unique characteristics along the way. The modern and dynamic design of the Maserati Ghibli, with its elegant styling and streamlines, was in fine contrast with the exquisite and skillfully constructed architecture in Eastern China and Pingyao Ancient City. The Maserati SUVs, the Levante, Levante Trofeo and GTS, conquered the challenging terrains of the Gobi desert on the ancient Silk Road and surmounted the
mountains and glaciers from Dunhuang to Chengdu. Whether set against rivers, mountains, highlands or ancient temples, the iconic Maserati Quattroporte exuded charm and timeless sophistication in every location and from every angle with comfort and grace. As well as being noted for their dramatic beauty, China and Italy share an outstanding tradition of creativity, craftsmanship and refinement. As a brand born in Italy, Maserati inherits the same values of its country. During the Grand Tour, participants experienced some of China’s most famous art and craftsmanship monuments, from the magnificent architecture of ancient Buddhist temples to the former residences of Tang dynasty poet Liu Zongyuan and famous Qing Dynasty painter Zhang Daqian. The inspirations from these innovators last until now, in the same way that the Maserati brand continues to be inspired by the Italian masters of the past.
The Grand Tour participants were also inspired by China’s longstanding passion for crafting works of beauty and sophistication, like the Dongyuan letterpress printing, the “living fossil of ancient printing techniques”, and the exquisite lacquer-ware of Pingyao Ancient City. At Maserati, this same spirit of craftsmanship from the Italian passion for life has fueled the brand for 105 years. Every Maserati is crafted to ensure superior quality in every detail. Maserati’s passion for excellence and luxury has made its cars exclusive for over a hundred years. As it celebrates its 15th anniversary of entering the Chinese market, Maserati completed a memorable journey in tribute to China and its rich culture. As the longest tour organized by the brand in recent years, the Grand Tour lived up to Maserati‘s unrelenting passion for driving and living. In the future, we are sure that Maserati will continue to innovate, refine and perfect in order to create beautiful life experiences for its customers.

CHAMPIONS AGAIN
13 key moments leading to Queen’s killer comeback By Chris Riemenschneider
Even though singer Freddie Mercury is here only in spirit, but what a holy spirit, Queen is bigger than ever in 2019. I could provide numerical proof of the band’s ascension to new heights 28 years after Mercury’s death: Queen sold more albums in North America than any artist in the first half of 2019, and the original 1975 clip for Bohemian Rhapsody just became the first pre-MTV music video to earn more than 1 billion views on YouTube. Even better, though, here’s a personal anecdote: My 8-year-old daughter and her friends know way more Queen songs than I did when I was 8, which was in 1981, right at the apex of the British quartet’s heyday. Of course, the reason for this posthumous mega-boost is the movie based on Mercury’s life, Bohemian Rhapsody, which took home four Oscars and $900 million in box office sales since its release last November. Capitalizing on its surprising success, the two remaining members, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, are making a victory lap with singer Adam Lambert on a worldwide tour. Here’s a look back, charting all the ups and downs that led to Queen’s all-time high. 1. Less-than-killer start. The band’s first two albums were flops, and the third (Sheer Heart Attack, now a fan fave) became only a modest hit thanks to the bouncy single “Killer Queen.” U.S. sales were especially tepid going into their first tour here in 1974, opening for Mott the Hoople. 2. Operatic uptick. Fourth album Night at the Opera was the charm in 1975. The band’s experimentation with big sonic production and layered vocals led to the truly operatic single “Bohemian Rhapsody” and a compelling concept album. A successful 1976 U.S. tour included a memorable show at the old St. Paul Civic Center. 3. Champions at last. After packing sports arenas, the band delivered the sporty battle cry “We Will Rock You”/”We Are the Champions.” If the band had quit there, its members would have retired well off the royalties from those oft-cranked songs. 4. Not too jazzed. The rise of punk and metal in the late ‘70s made Queen’s high-concept rock seem “elitist,” to paraphrase a Rolling Stone review of the 1978 album Jazz. Its singles failed to garner much U.S. radio play, including the now-revered “Don’t Stop Me Now.” 5. Back in the game. Seemingly unworried about maintaining their rock cred, in 1980 the quartet turned in the campy “Flash Gordon” soundtrack and the slick album The Game, which featured the full-on disco groover “Another One Bites the Dust” and the Elvis-flavored “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” two of their biggest U.S. singles. 86
6. Breathing space. Already butting heads while making the 1982 album Hot Space, Queen’s members went on hiatus after its icy reception. Contrary to the movie, all of them worked on solo projects, not just Mercury. None saw much success, though. 7. Live Aid revival. The quartet was playing shows again before its rousing performance at Wembley Stadium for 1985’s two-continent mega-concert (another inaccuracy in last year’s film), but this truly was an unforgettable comeback moment. 8. Mercury’s decline. Another factual error in the biopic: The singer’s fatal AIDS diagnosis was actually revealed after Live Aid. Related or not — but understandable, if so — the albums that followed sagged creatively and commercially, especially 1989’s The Miracle. The band was at something of a low point when Mercury died in 1991. 9. Honored in the ‘90s. The 1992 Wayne’s World movie was unforeseeably huge. Mike Myers and Dana Carvey lip-syncing/head-banging to “Bohemian Rhapsody” behind the wheel of a Pacer made the song an even bigger radio hit. More seriously, a 1992 Mercury tribute concert with George Michael, Elton John, David Bowie and Axl Rose reiterated his legacy as a singer. And the Queen/Bowie collaboration “Under Pressure” gained new popularity after Vanilla Ice sampled it for 1990’s “Ice Ice Baby.”
10. On screens big and small. Hollywood latched onto the band’s legacy in the 2000s, using its songs in such movies as High Fidelity and A Knight’s Tale (“We Are the Champions” in both), Shaun of the Dead (“Don’t Stop Me Now”) and even the kids movies Ella Enchanted and Happy Feet (“Somebody to Love”). The band’s classics also earned new fans via the “Rock Band” and “Guitar Hero” games. 11. Paul who? The first singer that May and Taylor hired to tour with Queen as Mercury’s stand-in was truly bad company, to use the name of Paul Rodgers’ old band. He had neither the flashy charisma nor the vocal range, and lasted just one tour, in 2005-06. 12. Lambert gets the part. After May and Taylor helped judge a Queen episode of American Idol in 2009, they hired the show’s flamboyantly rocking runner-up, Adam Lambert, for a few TV and charity-gig appearances before they finally hit the road together starting in 2013. They continued touring in 2017, then settled in for a successful Las Vegas residency last year. 13. Total rhapsody. Recently, the Bohemian Rhapsody soundtrack, DVD and streaming releases all remain high on their respective sales charts eight months since the movie’s release.

Society's obsession with new gadgetry has wreaked havoc on the environment: Close to 50 million tons of toxic e-waste are generated each year, and the mostly Africabased supply chains for cobalt and rare earth metals used in components are riddled with human rights violations and planet-damaging mining practices. The problem is exacerbated in part by the yearly parade of new models of smartphones, tablets, and wearables from tech giants such as Apple, Samsung, and Google, and all the marketing dollars put behind these launches. But as phones become more durable, more expensive, and less differentiated from previous iterations, French refurbished-electronics marketplace Back Market is working to convince us that "New is not exciting," says CEO Thibaud Hug de Larauze. "There hasn't been major innovation in smartphones in four years," says Hug de Larauze, who uses a five-year-old iPhone 6 that would retail for about $200 on his site. "It's mostly psychological, with advertising telling you that you need a new one." The global market for used and refurbished smartphones is growing, it was $19 (KD 5.8) billion 88
in 2017 and will reach $44 (KD 13.4) billion by 2027, according to Performance Market Research--while new smartphone sales contracted by 4% worldwide in 2018. But U.S. consumers are simultaneously more familiar with and less excited about buying pre-owned phones. A 2019 poll by Back Market found that 80% of Americans never shop for refurbished electronics. Of those, half said they didn't trust resale devices; the other half had never considered them. After launching in the U.S. and raising $48 (KD 14.6) million in Series B funding in 2018, five-yearold Back Market is moving to change that and do for used gadgets what Airbnb did for renting strangers' homes: reposition them as something people would confidently spend money on. For a 10% commission on each transaction, Back Market facilitates sales from more than 600 refurbishing outfits worldwide, including multinational behemoth Brightstar, momand-pop shops, and Apple's and Dyson's refurbishing units. Products must pass a 23-point test before being sold on the platform, and new sellers go through a trial period with restricted sales until they prove themselves reliable. In Europe, Back Market is a successful and trusted platform: Gross sales grew from $4 (KD 1.2) million in 2015 to $120 (KD 36.5) million in 2017. In 2018, after the U.S. launch, they reached $300 (KD 91.2) million, a figure the company hopes to double this year. (Back Market does not release its U.S. sales figures.) But Americans will be harder to sway than their European peers. Jeff Fieldhack, a
research director at Counterpoint Research, says that carriers in the U.S. have squeezed more money out of refurbished phones than their Chinese and European counterparts, but put most of their effort into selling new phones. The emergence of Back Market, he says, is forcing everyone to take refurbishing more seriously. Back Market is wooing Americans by offering a more efficient and formalized user experience than existing mega-platforms such as eBay and Amazon. Phones are rated on aesthetic appearance, and searches on Back Market only surface the bestpriced option in each category--allowing users to compare the price of, say, a scratched 32 GB iPhone 6 with one that looks new. Each purchase comes with a 30-day return policy and a minimum warranty of six months in the U.S., and customer-care representatives field complaints. This is, in short, not the flea-market atmosphere of eBay. But beyond finding new customers, the big idea is to "Free the world from tech obsolescence," says CCO Vianney Vaute, who cofounded the company with Hug de Larauze and CTO Quentin Le Brouster. Back Market's internal motto is "Screw New." The founders invoke efforts such as American Express's recycled-plastic credit card as signs of greater changes afoot. Indeed, nearly half of U.S. consumers said, "they would definitely or probably change their consumption habits to reduce their impact on the environment," according to a 2018 Nielsen study. And unlike most organic and fair-trade products, Back Market's ethical tech costs less than the alternative.

THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING
Meryl Streep, Natalie Portman and more Hollywood women take a stand By Kenneth Turan
If anyone needs convincing at this late date that gender inequality both in front of and behind the camera is the norm in Hollywood, This Changes Everything will get the job done. Directed by Tom Donahue, whose previous documentary was Casting By, this earnest and passionate film talks to lots of boldface names, including performers Geena Davis, Meryl Streep, Natalie Portman and Taraji P. Henson and producers Shonda Rhimes and Jill Soloway. Actress Tracee Ellis Ross says at one point in the film, “As women we are not allowed to be angry,” but the ardent testimony points in the opposite direction. Interview subjects voice justifiable outrage at what they — individually and women in general — have had to put up with. “Movies and TV have always driven me insane,” says writer Callie Khouri, who wrote the Oscar-winning Thelma & Louise as a reaction to gender inequality. “Misogyny is so prevalent, it’s almost unremarkable. Women are inconsequential except as ornamentation.” Adds Soloway, who created Transparent, “Imagine as a man women really wanting to look at your body when they see you.”
92
An advantage this fury creates is that it ensures This Changes Everything deals with the treatment of women as a burning issue and not an intellectual exercise. On the other hand, perhaps inevitably because it is dealing with a big issue, This Changes Everything suffers a bit from being all over the map, touching so many bases that, though each is important, they don’t all cohere into a whole. The patron saint of this film is Davis, as the founder of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and one of the film’s most persuasive voices. This organization has done exceptional work in gathering damning statistics concerning the numbers of women behind and in front of the camera — like the fact that only 15% of the top-grossing films of 2018 were written by women — stats that appear periodically as text on screen. One of the film’s strengths is its opening sections, where women talk about how important it is to see yourself on screen in a nuanced, realistic way and how what you see as a child influences your perception of what you can become. Lena Dunham, for instance, talks about how she watched A League of Their Own every day for an entire summer, and Taraji P. Henson remembers how seeing Diahann Carroll physically battering folks in Dynasty
without getting arrested was a positive jolt. Mention is also made of “the CSI effect,” how the success of that show led to women going into forensic pathology and how after Brave and The Hunger Games were released, the numbers of women taking archery skyrocketed. Women also share stories of mistreatment on the set, with Sharon Stone, for instance, recalling asking a director who told her to sit on his lap to take direction, “Does Tom Hanks sit on your lap?” Finding women behind the camera is especially difficult, with former executive Susan Lyne relating the challenges of getting Shonda Rhimes’ Grey’s Anatomy on the air and Natalie Portman noting she had worked for only two female directors in her career, “and one of them is myself.” The last part of This Changes Everything looks at attempts to change the system, from the groundbreaking work done in 1979 by a group that became known as the Original Six to what happened in 2015 when FX’s John Landgraf made it his business to change his network’s culture. In the final analysis, This Changes Everything aligns the words of writer-producer Courtney Kemp Agboh. “You just hire women,” she says. “It’s not that hard.”

OAK PLUS SALON This new salon in Bnied al Gar has a lot to offer beauty lovers By bazaar staff
It is often said that, “Mighty oaks from little acorns grow,” and this is true of most things; it’s the effort you put in that will reward you, you just have to start from somewhere, even if it’s starting from something small; humble beginnings. This can be true of a project at university or a business goal, but it is also true of self-care. Taking the time to look after yourself can be as important for your well-being as it is for your feelings of self-worth, and this is an investment that will stand you in good stead for a lifetime, no matter how tiny the indulgence. A fifteen-minute-long hand massage does not sound like it is too much time to invest in, does it? For thousands of years, ancient cultures have believed in the therapeutic benefits of touch. Proponents of acupressure and reflexology believe the hands are very much linked to other areas of the body. So, with just this little massage, your whole body may benefit. Plus, in these stressful times, occasionally taking just fifteen minutes out of your day, only for you, can only be of service to your keeping sane. Especially now that everyone is back and the place is bustling more than ever in crazy K-Town! Oak Plus Salon provides exactly this type of swift but relaxing service, great for busy women on the go. They also have a foot massage that needs to be tried too. Sit back, relax and place your tootsies in the care of the technician. This brand spanking new salon was opened with keeping in mind the combination of beauty services with cleanliness, quality, experience and affordability. Something that owner Dalal Hasan Al Oqab didn’t think was on offer here in Kuwait, before she opened this first Oak Plus Salon. But, if you like the experience in this bright salon, there are many more services for you to luxuriate in and build on your self-care program. Primarily a haircare salon, there are all manner of services available to maintain your tresses, from a simple trim to the addition of twinkly tinsel for a bit of fun or even a kids’ gloss treatment to tame your child’s unruly hair! That should make school mornings a little easier. Sophisticated styling, hand-brushed color-techniques, and to the other extreme crazy color application, all are available as well as nourishing treatments to keep your crowning glory in tip-top condition. The most popular services so far are the amazing color
94
transformations which are evident in the many beautiful pictures and boomerangs that you can see on the @oakplussalon Instagram feed. Oak Plus Salon regularly offers affordable treatments for those customers who wish to frequent the salon more often. Previously popular promotions have included an unlimited blow dry service, and unlimited wavy hairstyling for a month. How luxurious, to let the experts labor over your locks for this length of time! This is the really wonderful thing about Oak Plus Salon, they give you so much more than what you are expecting. This is a wonderful salon, with nature-inspired interior design elements, in lovely surroundings, and with experienced stylists. They have also considered how can you best use the salon by curating cost-effective, multi-service packages as well as competitively priced one-off services; who knew expert salon services could be yours for a dinar! Oak Plus Salon is a one-stop, glamor shop. You can prepare for your special event with make-up, lashes and wand wound waves in one beautifully wrapped up package deal. Or, how about a manicure and pedicure using the highest quality nail polishes such as O.P.I. or Essie. The latter is the Queen of England’s favorite brand no less but only in the color ‘Ballet Slipper’. You are not limited to this one pale pink however, as here you can choose from a masterfully chosen color assortment of polishes. No matter the statement you want to make with your manicure, the precision focused nail technicians will deliver their best. Make sure you apply a gel finish for that extra longlasting effect which will keep your painted nails looking fresh for longer. On the retail products side, you can tell that Oak Plus Salon has done their homework when it comes to providing you with high quality products. Available are allergen-free and sulphate-free Amega products which have been given an 82% rating on www.skinsafe.com. The Morphosis hair treatment programs are targeted specifically to offer superior solutions to repair all scalp and hair problems, and a large range of L’Oréal’s Serie Expert salon products are also yours to purchase in order for you to be able to maintain the salon’s expert standards and your quality experiences at home. Affordable glamor is such a part of the Oak Plus Salon vision and culture, that they even have their own hashtag #oakoffers, proving that this is the salon that continuously gives you more. “Everyone has the right to look and feel beautiful. My doors are open for all,” enthuses salon owner Dalal, although currently making an appointment is encouraged. Dalal goes on to explain, “I need to ensure I serve all customers equally and give them the undivided attention they deserve. Walk ins are always welcome of course but as any salon, appointments are much better for us to plan ahead." This culture of giving a great deal of care and attention to the customer experience is impressive. In this salon’s case, you could almost say, “Oak Plus by name, Oak Plus by nature.”
To keep up-to-date with the latest Oak Plus hair, nails, beauty and lashes salon news visit www.oak-plus-salon.business.site and follow @oakplussalon on Instagram and Facebook. This is where we’re going to throw it back with singles and albums that, to this day, live on as ultimate hits. We also wanted to include musical collaborations worth sharing with our readers. Because, after all, the music world has so much to offer, so shedding light on a fraction of what this incredible world has to offer is super exciting! Keep your eyes peeled out for this page every month, as our musical journey is only just beginning!
THROWBACK THURSDAYS
WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT
SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT
TAKE ME TO CHURCH
An unforgettable throwback single that everyone MUST sing-along to! The track was released in September, 1984 and is taken from Tina’s fifth solo album. It then hit the US charts to become her first and only number one track back in 1989. Today, the single continues to be a staple on our throwback playlists.
In 1991, the single by the American rock band was released, forever changing the musical meaning of the word and genre of Alternative. If you haven’t jammed out to this track in your teens, then please do now! One of their most memorable and biggest hits during the 90’s is still rocking strong decades later.
It might not seem that long ago, but it sure has been a minute since the Irish musician, Hozier, released his lead single from his very own selftitled debut album back in 2013. He graced the stage at Lollapalooza this summer and revived our ultimate love feels for the album and this particular hit single.

COLLAB CRUSH
THE LION KING: THE GIFT
NO.6 COLLABORATIONS PROJECT
REVENGE OF THE DREAMERS III
After Disney released their remake of the film The Lion King, Queen Beyoncé outdid herself yet again with an album filled with African talents. Collaborative tracks from Mr. Eazi, SAINt JHN, to Pharrell and even Blue Ivy! Spirit marked as the first single with a visually beautiful music video. A stellar summer album and a collab crush we’re still drooling over.
Our favorite ginger strikes again, but this time with a collaborative album! Featuring several artists like Chance the Rapper, Travis Scott, 50 Cent, and so much more. Taking us on a journey from summer hits to a total chill mood. We couldn’t decide which track was our fave collab crush, as they all had a vibe of their own, each worth a listen over and over again.
The eloquent artist said it himself, “This album represents community and the unheard, unsung artist that fight and bleed daily to be felt.” Between all the collab crushes this month, this particular album hit our hearts the hardest. Featuring upcoming talents we simply cannot wait to see more of, including Ari Lennox, Bas, Omen, and much more. Every track preaches wisdom!

FERRARI AFTERSALES SERVICE
DELIVERING ULTIMATE PEACE OF MIND FOR PRANCING HORSE ENTHUSIASTS By bazaar staff
The Ferrari ownership experience is about much more than enjoying the incredible performance potential and the cuttingedge technology of the renowned brand’s diverse product range. The ownership of a Ferrari presents a unique relationship of trust that bonds Ferrari customers to the brand, providing them with ultimate peace of mind that their valuable vehicles will be taken care of by the most qualified professionals, at the most advanced state-of-the-art facilities. As the Prancing Horse takes its first gallop out of the showroom, the proud new owner is confident that from that moment onwards, their prized possession will age gracefully. Every new Ferrari comes with an exclusive seven-year free maintenance contract in addition to the standard factory three-year warranty. The Genuine Maintenance service ensures that each car is maintained to the highest standards to meet the company’s strict requirements for safety, performance and reliability. The Genuine Maintenance program includes labor, original replacement parts, lubricants, engine oil and brake fluid. The checks are scheduled to take place once a year and are performed by highly qualified dealer staff who have been trained at the Ferrari Training 98
Centre in Maranello using factory-approved dedicated diagnostic equipment. Nobody understands the unique characteristics of the various Prancing Horse models better than them. The first-of-its-kind maintenance package covers each individual vehicle, and thus extends to any subsequent owner during the entire seven-year period, setting an unprecedented standard throughout the industry for customer care. The program covers the scheduled maintenance at standard service intervals (20,000 km, or once a year, with no restriction on total kilometres) along with the relative original spare parts, engine oil and brake fluid. The advantage to the owner is the assurance that the vehicle will be subject to regular annual inspection by Ferrari-trained personnel using factory-approved, dedicated diagnostic equipment. Every Ferrari is assigned a dedicated Service Advisor at the local authorized dealership who is tasked with following the status of the car throughout the course of its life. The Service Advisor follows up with the owner on a regular basis to check whether the car is due for
service and acts as the main point of contact for the Ferrarista in case any technical issues are encountered. Once the car arrives at the Ferrari service centre, the customer is welcomed by the dealership’s staff and supported by the Service Advisor who fills the car’s Job Card. The external check is then conducted ahead of the more extensive 360 check which happens once the car is positioned on the lift in the garage. All the details related to every Ferrari are registered on a continuous basis in the Modis Aftersales System, providing the Ferrari Service Advisors with detailed insights into each and every model. Whilst the car is at the service centre, any additional required fixes covered under the warranty are carried out directly at the centre without the need to consult the owner. When additional cost is required, the Service Advisor personally contacts the customer to secure approval for the job before proceeding. Following the completion of the servicing procedure, the customer is called to collect the car and another follow-up call takes place one week after to receive the customer’s feedback.
Ferrari owners therefore feel assured and safe in the knowledge that their precious vehicle is being kept in perfect working order, maintaining the highest levels of efficiency, performance and safety as the years pass. This peace of mind can be prolonged with the Extended Warranty programme, protecting the value and functional integrity of their Prancing Horse over 15 years. The world of Ferrari was designed to cater to those who demand and expect nothing but the best, offering excellence and flair to match their car’s adrenalinepumping performance. Ferrari is committed to deliver an unrivalled automobile ownership experience for its discerning clientele through endless passion and tireless attention to detail during every stage of its Aftersales Service Program.

The last thing Offred tells us in The Handmaid’s Tale is “And so I step up, into the darkness within; or else the light”, as she steps onto a van. Readers had no way of telling what lay ahead. With The Testaments, the wait is over. The long-awaited sequel to Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale is here. The story picks up 15 years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead. Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in.” said Margaret Atwood.

TALKING TO STRANGERS By Malcolm Gladwell, Nonfiction
In July 2015, a young black woman named Sandra Bland was pulled over for a minor traffic violation in rural Texas. Minutes later she was arrested and jailed. Three days later, she committed suicide in her cell. What went wrong? Talking to Strangers is all about what happens when we encounter people we don't know, why it often goes awry, and what it says about us. How do we make sense of the unfamiliar? Why are we so bad at judging someone, reading a face, or detecting a lie? Why do we so often fail to 'get' other people? No one shows us who we are like Malcolm Gladwell. Here he sets out to understand why we act the way we do, and how we all might know a little more about those we don't.

SINGA PURA
A medley of flavors, food traditions and a journey into Singaporean cuisine By bazaar staff
The joy of trying something completely novel is unparalleled. We had no idea of what to expect as we walked into Kuwait’s first and only Singaporean restaurant in the heart of the city. Excited about our roles as culinary explorers, we were delighted with the minimal yet cozy interiors, and were ready to plant our flag on the table and claim it as our own. Lujain Al Fulaij, restaurateur and the woman behind this new concept greeted us with a huge smile at the door. We curiously ask Lujain about her unique choice of cuisine, and she regaled us with stories about spending a lot of her childhood in the kitchen with her Singaporean grandmother. This was the cuisine she grew up eating at home. Singa Pura is an ode to her Singaporean grandmother. “Singaporean culture revolves around eating, they have 5-6 smaller meals a day, so there is always a meal around the corner” she explained. The small island city-state in South East Asia is a melting pot of many cultures in the area of its proximity, trading and interaction to its neighbors. After 15 years in the food and beverage industry as a marketing and concept developer, Lujain was ready to start out on her own. Her experience and skillset are obvious in all of her choices. From the location to the color scheme, everything was selected to welcome you without being overpowering so that your meal is the only true star of the show. She already had the perfect chef too; he had been trained by her grandmother for 40 years. We started off our experience with a selection of vibrant drinks. The Rose Refresher, made from cooling rose specially imported from Singapore, along with lime and basil seeds, quenched our thirst. We also loved the Singa Pura Mojito that surprised us with its lemongrass and ginger flavors. The salads arrived and the glass noodle Mee Salad with its mix of green snap beans, bell peppers and layer of light Asian dressing was delicious. This salad is suitable for vegans but everything on the menu can be modified to suit any dietary needs. The Rojak Salad, with its unexpected pairing of pineapple and cucumber, is tossed in a spicy peanut tamarind dressing and served with prawn crackers. The restaurant is located in Dasman Complex’s ground level, with both an indoor and an outdoor seating area. Natural light enters through the large, accordion glass doors, which are usually left open during the cooler months and make for an exhilerating atmosphere. The indoor area is spacious and calming with its light peach leather benches and pine wood chairs. There is an ongoing theme of copper throughout the 104
restaurant, with beautiful shiny industrial pipes going along the backs of the seating area and the sleek cutlery. This is contrasted by the gorgeous floral curves of the batik motifs that are engraved on the huge marble tiles on the walls. Lujain personally chose the patterns, and local design firm Grid incorporated them in all of Singa Pura's branding, from the menus to the packaging. It's these subtle, and almost hidden, elements which successfully depict a sense of cohesion throughout the entire restaurant. By the time the main dishes had arrived, we'd already fallen in love with Singapore’s food. We tried the Chicken Satay, which might seem familiar to anyone who has been to a Thai restaurant, but the marinade is different, and so is the accompanying peanut sauce. All of the sauces, dips and condiments are made in-house in Singa Pura and are vegan, so they can be enjoyed by everyone. The Mee Goreng is a wonderful wok-tossed yellow noodle dish that included cabbage, potatoes and tofu. You can also add chicken, shrimp or eggs. Carb-lovers will appreciate the Nasi Goreng, as the rice was deeply spiced and packed a lot of heat, while the fried chicken and grilled tamarind shrimp delivered on hearty proteins. The fried egg on the rice presented a visual element that brought this stunning and tasty dish together. But our absolute favorite was the Roti Canai, fresh crispy flaky layered golden rotis that are served with a potato curry. This is everything comfort food should aspire to be. No meal is complete without dessert, and the Bandung Royal is a fragrant floral rose milk with pieces of mango that is a perfect ending to such a wonderful and filling meal. The Pineapple Cheesecake is one of Lujain’s own creations and is a wonderfully soft and fluffy cheesecake topped with grilled brûléed pineapples. For something slightly more traditional, try the Jumpot Jumpot, or banana fritters served with coconut-pandan ice cream. The hot crunchy fried fritters and the coconut are a match made in heaven. The ice cream is exclusively made for Singa Pura by OHG!, as Lujain was quite conscious about working with other Kuwaiti partners because she believes that a culture of collaboration and support is just better for everyone. She has also partnered up with Ananas for their coffee. As for the beautiful interior design, she worked with Jassem Shehab who transformed the design she had imagined into reality. Even the tableware, accessories and décor items were purchased in Kuwait. Lujain is still not done with Singa Pura. She is constantly developing new dishes to add to the menu and is tinkering with new ideas. There is something new added every couple of weeks, so we are definitely going back soon to see what else she has come up with.
Singa Pura is open daily from 12:30 pm to 11 pm and is located in the basement of Dasman Complex, Sharq on Jaber Al Mubarak Street. Delivery is available via Bilbayt, Deliveroo and Carriage or call on 9677 2707 and follow them on Instagram @singapurakw.

PHONESOAP UV SANITIZING CHARGER
DJI RONIN SC GIMBAL
MINI TRANSPARENT SPEAKER
At this time and age, we hardly steer away from our smartphones. Placing them wherever we go easily exposes it to picking up bacteria. That’s where PhoneSoap comes in, which uses UV light to kill those picked-up bacteria. Simply place your phone under the UVC light, and they’ll be gone! It’s not only sanitizing, but works as a charger too with two external ports.
Stabilization at its best, the DJI Ronin is designed for use of mirrorless cameras. Its 3-axis stabilization also helps in capturing the smoothest forms of motion, including features of automated panoramas, time and motion lapses. The DJI weighs just under two and a half pounds, and its battery life goes up to 11 hours with a body that is less than nine inches tall.
Aesthetically pleasing, Transparent Sound are giving us a mini speaker with loads of features. From side panels of tempered glass, a singlepiece aluminum frame to a dual full-range drivers on display. The built-in amp provides power, while Bluetooth options and “True Wireless” allows you to pair two units together for a broader soundstage.

ONLY ORGANIC
This season, make the right choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner By bazaar staff
What we choose to eat can be a contentious topic. While we can disagree on whether you should go keto or have buttered toast every morning, we can all definitely agree that whatever you consume needs to come from a trusted source. What is the point of sitting down for a healthy breakfast if it is full of toxins and chemicals that came from the way it was produced before it even arrived at the supermarket? Unless you plan on raising your own chickens and growing your own oranges how can you be sure that you are getting chemical-free food? For food to be organic, it needs to have been produced using methods that are in compliance with the standards of organic farming. Pesticides, fertilizers, irradiation, industrial solvents, and synthetic food additives are all avoided on the farm, so that your plate can be free of these harmful substances. If a producer can comply with all of the necessary regulations, only then would a certifying body grant them an official certificate proving their claims. Regular visits and inspections take place to ensure that the farms remain on the right track. So the next time you are at your local co-op, remember that a product that says on the label that it is organic, without stating who has certified them, is questionable at best. Not all hope is lost though, as making the right choice for yourself and your family is now easier than ever with Only Organic Eggs and Only Organic Juices. This unique brand is exclusively produced for Alyasra Foods by Kor Agro Organik. A Turkish company, Kor Agro Organik was founded by a food scientist with a passion for Research and Development, and the company is constantly working on improving its array of products and practices. For eggs to be certified organic, the chickens must never be fed anything that is not 100% organic from the day they are born. The chicken-feed used by Kor Agro Organik is made up of 12 different 100% raw organic certified plants and spices. They even include marigold flowers which help increase vitamins A,B,C and K in the eggs. The chickens are also kept in modern coops which allow them to roam freely, so effectively Only Organic eggs are also free-range. The same care is given to the orchards where the fruit and vegetables that are used to manufacture Only Organic Juice are grown. Neither pesticides nor fertilizers are used on the farms so that consumers can be sure that they are not ingesting toxins. Only Organic products are available in most major supermarkets in Kuwait, as well as Makani Market. You don’t have to worry about any false labels here, as Only Organic meets all of the requirements to be officially certified organic products. The juice is certified by CERES
114
(Certification of Environmental Standards) and the eggs are certified by ECOCERT, ensuring that both products are prepped for consumption in accordance with European Union regulations. Making smart choices in the supermarket aisle is the first step to making healthy choices when you sit down to a meal. And we have some quick tips to adding more nutrients to your day without a lot of effort. Vitamins Vroom Vroom Fruit juice is a great way to load up on the vitamins that your body needs to keep you in tip-top condition. If you don’t normally take your lunch to work, a juice pack is a great way to start. Juice is a fantastic alternative to dehydrating your body with coffee all day. It will give you a good jolt of energy and will keep you going until the end of the day. There is a flavor for everyone, from classics like orange or pomegranate, to the more fun and exciting mixes. Different fruits are expertly layered together to bring out the best in all of them. Our favorite is the Only Juice Super Fruits which is a cocktail of apples, beets, pomegranate, cherries and carrots. Hit the Sweet Spot If you are the kind of person who always wants dessert but is trying to keep the sugar monster at bay, then we have the thing for you. Make your own ice-pops at home by filling up some silicone popsicle molds with juice from Only Organic Juice and sticking them in the freezer overnight. Kids absolutely love these too and it's an easy way to introduce them to new fruits and flavors they might otherwise shy away from. Batch cook and freeze Freeze-ahead egg muffins are a great breakfast or lunch option for people who are always strapped for time. You can quickly cook up a batch using Only Organic eggs and stock them in your freezer then grab and go whenever you need a scrumptious and nutritious meal. Add diced vegetables for more fiber and flavor. There are lots of recipes online to get you started then experiment till you find your favorite. Frittatas are your friend A frittata is an Italian dish that could basically be described as a deep-dish omelet. It is also the perfect solution if you want to whip up a healthy lunch or dinner in 30 minutes and very minimal effort. Our favorite recipe includes spinach and cheese, but you can use whatever ingredients you prefer, just remember to incorporate organic eggs! Throw everything together in a baking dish and bake in the oven. Making healthy resolutions has never been easier, so why wait until New Year’s Day to start making changes? Start today and include Only Organic in your breakfast, lunch and dinner, and eat healthier every day.
Only Organic products are available in retail stores across Kuwait and from Makani Market, @makanikw, and for more information follow @alyasrafoods on Instagram. 115

PORSCHE INTRODUCES NEW 911 CARRERA COUPÉ AND 911 CARRERA CABRIOLET Porsche is expanding its eighth-generation range with the addition of the 911 Carrera. The new sports car is being launched as a Coupé and Cabriolet and generates 385 hp (283 kW) from its 3.0-litre, six-cylinder boxer engine with biturbo charging. The Carrera is the entry-level 911 model and offers 15 hp (11 kW) more power output than its predecessor. It shares a similar range of standard features to the 911 Carrera S. These include a 10.9-inch touchscreen display, comprehensive connectivity and innovative assistance systems, such as the Porsche Wet Mode that ensures even safer handling. The 911 Carrera is distinguished by smaller sized wheels, brakes and tailpipe covers on the exhaust system. As with the Carrera S model, the engine, chassis and brakes are designed for exclusive sportiness. The 3.0-litre, six-cylinder boxer engine of the 911 Carrera generates power largely through the smaller wheel diameters of the turbines and compressors that feature in the new turbochargers. Power transmission is handled by the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK). This enables the 911 Carrera Coupé to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, with a top speed of 293 km/h. The optional Sport Chrono Package shaves a further 0.2 seconds off the sprint time. The combined fuel consumption (NEDC-correlated) of the Coupé is 9.0 l/100 km, while the Cabriolet records this figure as 9.2 l/100 km. The new Porsche 911 Carrera Coupé and 911 Carrera Cabriolet are now available for order. Recycled polyester is key in this collection, most often made from used PET bottles, recycled polyester is processed and spun to create a fabric that’s easy to care for. The jersey pieces in the collection are made from organic cotton or blend made of TENCEL lyocell fibers. Figure-flattering dresses and tailored separates are key, with cozy oversized hoodies that can double as dresses and a checked shirt that can be thrown over any outfit balanced out by leggings and slim jeans. Knitwear features high necks and cropped bodies, while the outerwear is boxy yet chic. The H&M Fall 2019 Conscious Collection launches in September and will be available in stores and online on kw.hm.com.

OREO ICE CREAM YOUR WAY Everyone loves OREOs. Whether you split them, dunk them in milk or just bite into them, you are going to love them as an ice cream. And just like the original cookie, there is more than one way to enjoy this ice-cold dessert. All of the ice cream is made from actual OREOs instead of just an artificial flavor. Try the stick version which is covered in a thick layer of crunchy coating made from OREOs and the crispy chocolatey cone filled with luscious vanilla and crumbled OREO cookie pieces. If you are a fan of ice cream on its own, it also comes in a cup or a larger tub for sharing (or not). But our favorite is the sandwich; true to the original OREO cookie origin, the flavored sandwich biscuits are filled with vanilla ice cream that includes crushed OREO pieces. Best news of all is that all of them are suitable for vegetarians. Available in retail stores across Kuwait and from Makani Market, @makanikw. For more information follow @Alyasrafoods on Instagram. ARIES MAR 20 – APR 19 The heat is bright and strong, let it bring forth joy and entertainment in your life! Encourage yourself instead of letting your mood take control over that trait. It may feel like there’s no end in sight, but don’t let it cloud your judgement! Get a second opinion if need be, or simply go on an adventure!
TAURUS APR 20 – MAY 20 Ground yourself more often and splash some color into your environment. You may be on edge right now, but it will pass, and days of endless rest will be upon you before you know it! Put some strength towards your sense of self, and power through. Your luck is on a roll, and it ain’t running low.
LIBRA SEP 23 – OCT 22 Keep striving for balance and harmony in your relationships and at work this month. Provide some space within your week for some alone time, and consider your inner growth’s progression. Once you’re satisfied and at peace with yourself, your communication skills will peak with an open mind to form new forms of friendship.
SCORPIO OCT 23 – NOV 22 Your confidence is peaking, so own it and flaunt it at work and, more importantly, with yourself. You’ll be strategically focused, but make sure to trust your inner instincts, and go for it. Shut out any negative thoughts that may come your way, and start shedding some light and positivity on them instead.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21 Patience, patience, and another one, patience Sags! Don’t rush into decisions or assumptions before you've actually thought them through carefully. This will open doors for the chance to correct and work on any upcoming misunderstandings. Continue to expand your mind for any future prospects before rejecting them right there and then!
CAPRICON DEC 22 – JAN 19 It’s time to revamp your routine, and aim it towards your health. Whether you were neglecting it or not, it’s never too safe to keep it in check! CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22 The opportunity to start meditating on certain changes for the sake of your inner self are immensely crucial. Keep your priorities in check, your life does not only revolve around work, but also about yourself. AQUARIUS JAN 20 – FEB 18 Take initiative, and make the first move towards moving further forward in your life. Elevate your attention when it comes to your surroundings, and don’t get too attached! Start focusing on your emotions more often, they matter to you the most. Look more into your artistic sensibilities, and continue being the ultimate creative you truly are.
PISCES FEB 19 – MAR 19 Let love be the water, Pisces, keep pouring it into you. We assure you, there won't be any droughts! Self-love comes first, always, it’s your sanctuary.
