Why We’re So Inspired by Students and Business Leaders Welcome to the winter edition of the BBB Community Guide. We invite you to enjoy the information in this edition of our magazine, created with publishing partner Brock Media.

As we end what we hope was a wonderful year for you, we also want to celebrate the importance of traditional values, highlighted with students and business people who want to make the world a wonderful place full of ethics, communications, respect and honesty.

We recently held our annual Torch event to honor businesses and non-profits, alongside students who received scholarships. It was an exciting evening for them (please see pages 25, 26 & 27 for the full details), and while we were honored to provide the awards, we were actually given even bigger gifts. Each of the students shared their perspectives, alongside former scholarship recipients, and from very deserving businesses and non-profits, and we all were enchanted with the optimism that surrounds those who will be the leaders of tomorrow.

Our keynote speaker and emcee was Brian Vogt, President/CEO of the Denver Botanic Gardens who talked about the importance of personal integrity and grace and why both of those attributes have served in his moral compass toward the direction of his life.

ust off the skis, dig out the coats, layer-on your clothing, and stock up on tea. When brisk winds blow, we need to prepare not only ourselves, but also our homes for cold weather. Jack Frost is here!

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, heating and cooling accounts for more than half (54 percent) of a home’s utility costs. Before heading to the store to stock up on winter-proofing supplies, though, you need to determine your home’s specific needs.

Some contractors recommend starting with an energy audit. During an audit, a professionally trained energy auditor tests your entire house

for areas of missing insulation and leakage points. This gives you a road map for how to improve those areas.

While an energy audit isn’t mandatory, it eliminates the possibility of addressing the wrong problem. One contractor compares an audit to an x-ray: “If you think you broke your arm, you just don’t go to a doctor to get your arm set, you get an x-ray first. You want to know what the exact problem is, and then solve it.” An audit can an energy make the money you spend on energy improvements audit eliminates stretch further.

This approach is costlier, but it saves money and increases comfort in the long-term.

Window Shopping – Saves Energy

W

indow options can boggle the mind. Coatings, tints, gas fillers, framing materials, energy efficiency and appearance are among the things that need to be considered. Here’s a quick checklist of what to look for as you shop, and the energy ratings best suited for windows in our area: Labels. Look for the Energy Star and the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) labels, which help ensure that your new windows meet federal guidelines for energy efficiency. Energy Star ratings are set by the U.S. Department of Energy and are region-specific based on weather patterns, so look for a map showing that the windows are suited for Colorado’s mercurial climate.

U- & R-Factors. U- and R-factors measure how well a window prevents heat from escaping or entering. U-factors commonly range from .25 to 1.25. The lower the U-factor, the better; look for windows with a low U-factor of .35 or less. R-factor is usually used for rating the efficiency of attic and wall insulation, but some manufacturers adopt it for windows as well. For window ratings, the R-factor can go up to 10, and some manufacturers sell top-of-theline windows that exceed R-9. The higher the R-factor the better; look for an R-value of at least 4.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) is a new, more accurate way to describe how much solar heat a window lets in. SHGC is expressed using a scale of 0 for none, to 1 for 100 percent. The lower

on a fleece jacket when it’s cold outside. If you combine insulation with air sealing, your fleece jacket now has a Gortex windbreaker on top of it. On cold, windy days this combination gives you the best bang for your buck.

Replacing old appliances with energy-efficient models also improves efficiency. When selecting new products, check the appliance’s Energy Guide label to see how ›Continues on page 22

a window’s SHGC, the less solar heat and light it lets in, which helps keep a house cooler. A low SHGC can reduce cooling; a high SHGC can increase passive-solar heat gain.

Choose a corresponding value that best suits our climate, probably between .40 and .55.

Condensation Resistance. This is rated on a scale of 0 to 100. The lower the number, the more resistant the window is to condensation buildup.

Construction. Frames can be made from a variety of materials, including wood, fiberglass, vinyl, steel, aluminum, plastic and wood, or composites of any of these. Vinyl is often used in our climate, because metal transfers cold and heat too easily and wood requires a lot of maintenance. Some companies make dual-purpose windows that are wood on the inside for aesthetics, and maintenance-free vinyl, metal or fiberglass on the outside for durability. Look for quality construction that includes upgraded weather stripping, and a warm-edge spacer between the glass and high-quality hardware. Warm-edge spacers help prevent condensation by using a rubberized stainless-steel channel instead of aluminum, which fails more often because it expands and contracts more as it heats up and cools down. Frames also should be tightly sealed to prevent air and water flow. Ask about the manufacturer’s warranty, because you want your investment to last long enough to pay for itself—10 years is OK, 20 years is good, but a lifetime warranty is ideal.

Low-E Glass. Some windows are made with regular glass, but better models feature low-emissivity or low-E glass.

This type of glass has a microscopic metal coating that reflects up to 70 percent of heat energy while allowing in visible light, generally giving it an R-factor of around 4.

Some higher-end windows also contain other insulators such as heat-mirror film that more than double their insulating properties to R-9 or higher. Better-quality windows are beneficial in sunny Colorado, where you want to block hot summer sunlight but let in warm winter sunshine.

Gas Fillers. The spaces between double- and triple-paned windows can be filled with regular air or inert gases, such as argon and krypton. Inert gases are odorless, colorless and nontoxic, plus they reduce heat transfer. Argon, for example, has about 33 percent less thermal conductivity than air.

Air Leakage. Different styles of windows have different rates of air leakage. Hinged windows generally offer the lowest leakage rates, but look for an air leakage rate of less than .30 cfm/ft2, which is the standard in most areas. ✻

much energy it consumes and how it compares to other models. ENERGY STAR–approved appliances meet stringent energy-efficiency criteria set by the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.

If replacing an older furnace is within your budget, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends choosing a furnace with a High Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating, which measures how much fuel a particular model converts into heat. While the national minimum AFUE rating is 78 percent, some ENERGY STAR products exceed 90 percent. Keep in mind that this rating only determines the efficiency of the furnace itself. You’ll need to factor in

whether or not your home has proper insulation, doublepaned windows and other energy upgrades. Be sure to maintain and clean the furnace annually.

To add extra warmth, replace window screens with storm windows, which are available for most window types and help reduce air leakage into and out of the home. Although costly, swapping out single-pane aluminum windows for energy-efficient double-paned windows saves money in the long run, and the windows will pay for themselves within years.

So bundle up your home for winter—and you may not have to bundle up yourself while you’re inside it! ✻

Easy Fixes

Doing a complete energy overhaul isn’t feasible for everyone, but there are ways to winterize a home without emptying your bank account.

● Take advantage of passive solar by letting in natural light during the day. ● Seal air leaks with caulk, weather stripping or sprayfoam insulation to prevent cold air from seeping inside. “Hot will always finds its way to cold through the path of least resistance,” says Matt Wilmoth of EnergySmart. Caulk and weather stripping “keep air you’re paying to heat from finding its way outside.”

Focus on windows, doors, chimney, corners, attic hatches, and along foundation areas where pipes or wires exit. ● Insert baby-seal guards on electrical outlets that face exterior walls to prevent cold air from coming through the sockets. ● Cover the hot-water heater with a thermal blanket. ● Plug appliances and electronics into power strips, and turn off the strip when it’s not in use. This saves 22

up to $100 per year, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. ● Change furnace filters. Dirty filters restrict airflow and increase energy demand. ● Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). This simple switch can save up to $50 a year for 15 bulbs and more than $600 over the entire lifetime of the bulbs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. ● Set the hot-water heater temperature to 120 degrees. ● Use draft snakes to eliminate air flowing in and out beneath doors. ● Insulate pipes with pipe foam that has a high R-value. ● Use a space heater. ● Reverse the direction of ceiling fans. Most have the option to switch from a cooling counterclockwise motion to a clockwise motion that pushes heated air downward. ● Seal heating and cooling ducts with mastic. According to ENERGY STAR, this can improve heating and cooling efficiency by as much as 20 percent. ✻

with a smile, and have conversations. Building positive relationships with your customers is customer service gold. How you respond and treat a customer can mean the difference between a positive, lasting relationship with referrals or an angry, antiadvocate for your business. When answering the phone, add a smile to your voice and have an upbeat attitude. You are there to serve the customer, so make sure they are being heard and appreciated.

Be sure to return calls promptly, treat that message with the same sense of urgency and respect you would show a customer standing in front of you.

Problem solver…When customers do present complaints, make certain you know how to handle the situation or bring someone in who can. Acknowledge the customer’s complaint or concerns, apologize if the situation calls for it and respond quickly.

You want to make sure that you resolve the issue reasonably and fairly and in a time-efficient manner.

The customer is likely to share their experience with others about your customer service skills. ✻

Make sure that your money is going to a nonprofit that you feel supports a cause or mission you believe in. For these organizations, earning donors’ trust is a vital aspect of their mission. They are eligible to display the BBB Charity Seal if they meet the BBB’s comprehensive 20 Standards for Charity Accountability, pledge to meet them in the future, and agree to address any concerns brought to their attention by the BBB. The 20 areas that the BBB reviews include questions of how a nonprofit governs itself through its board of directors, how it spends and accounts for its money, how truthfully it represents its goals and achievements, and how willingly it shares basic information with the

public. Does the organization publish an annual report? Is its board properly composed and free from conflicts of interest?

In short, does the nonprofit do its work as effectively as it wants you to believe? And the bottom line: What percentages of the organization’s funds go to its charitable programs as opposed to fund raising and administration costs? When you look up the full report on a BBB Accredited Charity, these percentages are clearly shown in a colorful pie chart that prospective donors can understand at a glance.

So, whether your generosity is driven by your holiday gift list or your desire to help in an emergency, do your homework—and make sure the nonprofit you support will make good use of your money. ✻

BBB offers the following tips for donors: • Rely on expert opinions when it comes to evaluat-

ing a nonprofit. Be cautious of third-party recommendations from bloggers or even your friends on social media, as they might not have fully researched the organization. The BBB reviews nonprofits against 20 standards, and its reports provide in-depth information in an easy-to-read format.

• Visit BBBDenverNonprofits.org for a list of BBB Accredited Charities you can donate to with confidence.

• Be cautious when giving online. With today’s technology, scammers can build a website in an hour mimicking a legitimate nonprofit organization. Be absolutely sure you trust the website before entering your creditcard or bank account information.

• Don’t succumb to high-pressure emotional pitches.

Giving on the spot is never necessary, no matter how hard a telemarketer or door-to-door solicitor pushes it. An organization that needs your money today will welcome it just as much tomorrow.

• Avoid the middleman. Some nonprofits raise money to pass along to other organizations, but the BBB suggests giving directly to the organization you want to support. When the allocation of funds is streamlined, it lessens the chance of inefficiency or fraud.

• Know the impact of your nonmonetary donations. Food and clothing drives, while well-meant, may not necessarily be the quickest way to help individuals in need, unless the organization has the staff and infrastructure to properly distribute such aid. The mission of Colorado Homeless Families (CHF) is to provide transitional housing and supportive services for homeless families with children and to help them become economically self-sufficient within eighteen months to two years. CHF serves the entire family with case management, counseling, educational seminars, support group meetings, summer youth program and access to the food/clothing/furniture bank.
