Frieze Art Fair Every year, in the middle of October, London goes mad for the Frieze Art Fair, and Rolls-Royce enthusiastically got involved this year with an installation by artist Angela Bulloch. From the showroom’s immense display windows in Berkeley Square, passersby and customers could see “Cipher of L” by Bulloch, who was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1997 and was also a member of the famous Young British Artists generation led by Damien Hirst at the end of the 1980s. Bulloch is known for installations formed by complex systems. Her works’ apparent simplicity, do however, follow a mathematical order. The installation, designed for Berkeley Square’s display windows, was inspired by the Rolls-Royce Phantom, as it has the same measurements as the vehicle and explores the relation between art, technology and craftsmanship.

A day in the life of a top model

Stunning Czech model Karolina Kurkova is the ambassador of the new BMW Series 2 Active Tourer, a familiar yet unique model that combines functionality with design. The top model’s image adapts perfectly to the vehicle’s style: “It’s perfect for me because it combines my two worlds – on one side, design, and on the other the flexibility and safety I need on a day-to-day basis as a mother,” she said. Photogenic Karolina started out as a model in Prague and her success
was instant. Moving to New York, in 2001 she was profiled on the cover of ‘Vogue’. She then won a contract with Prada and took part in dozens of campaigns and shows for the world’s biggest fashion houses. Confessing that she only got her driving licence recently, following the birth of her son Tobin, she says she’s grateful to drive the new BMW Serie 2 Active Tourer due to its functionality and especially due its driver assistance systems.

MINI’s Twitter auction for solidarity For four days only, MINI Spain set up the MINI Art Gallery, an online space that exhibited various MINI vehicles that had been taken over and intervened by 13 Spanish illustrators and designers. Artists such as Lyona, Aitor Saraiba, Lucía Be, Pedrita Parker, 7 codos, Gatotonto, Belén Temprado, Lara Costrafreda, Noelia Lozano, Carmen García Huerta and Sandra Suy were given the freedom to reinterpret the new MINI as they wished. The creation process taken by each of the artists could be followed, step by step, across social networks. An auction for the 13 models was held on Twitter between 6-10 October, with bidding opening at specific times each day for one of the works for a limited time. Users could bid by tweeting. After the auction, MINI Spain donated the total sum of the auctioned pieces to the Food Bank, estimated at 1,500 kilos of food.

The biggest order in Rolls-Royce’s history Without batting an eyelid, the extravagant Chinese magnate Stephen Hung ordered a fleet of 30 super-luxurious Rolls-Royce Phantoms that will be at the disposal of guests staying at the hotel the businessman is building in Macau. It’s one of the many efforts Hung is making to turn Macau into a millionaires-only, gambling mecca that’s bigger than Las Vegas. Located on China’s southern coast, Macau was the first European base in the Far East and was the last to come under Peking’s rule, in 1999. The city is known as the Las Vegas of China, given that it’s the only place in the country where gambling is allowed. Macau’s economy depends on the industry for 70% of its economy, and it’s there that Hung is supervising the construction of Louis XIII, set to be the world’s most exclusive casino-resort, with suites costing up to US$130,000 a night. Hung is married to a Mexican model with an eastern air. He’s passionate about diamonds, rubies, silk suits, indeed anything luxurious that the world can offer. The 30 Rolls-Royce Phantoms that he has ordered will be personalized, with extended bodywork. Two of them sport details in gold, both inside and outside the vehicles, which make them the most expensive cars that have ever been ordered.

Elvis’ roadster Abandoned in a storage unit, it had become a true relic… that’s how the BMW 507 was found, and its chassis number 70079 identified it as Elvis Presley’s sporty convertible. The story begins in 1958 when Elvis lived in Bad Nauheim, West Germany, while he was doing military service in the US Army's Third Armored Division. At that time, BMW had just built a convertible destined for the US market designed by Albrecht Graf Goertz. The firm presented the BMW 507 to various illustrious clients, such as King Baudouin of Belgium and Elvis himself. Casting a unique spell with its 3.2 litre, V8, 155 CV engine, the car seduced the already-famous 23-year-old singer. From then on, and with Elvis as its owner, the sports car carried around registration papers from the US armed forces. The white BMW 507 was quickly recognised by the King’s admirers, who would scribble their addresses on the bonnet in lipstick. Fed up with washing it off, Elvis sent the car off to be painted red. At the end of his military service, the Army was responsible for transporting the vehicle back to the US, and the car belonged to Elvis until 1960. This BMW 507’s story fades out until 1968 when it turns up belonging to Jack Castor, an aeronautical engineer who used it for five or six years then stored it in a California warehouse, with the idea of eventually restoring it. Four decades go by when, in July 2014, Castor decides to send it to Munich to put it in the hands of BMW’s experts. The BMW 507 was exhibited for a few weeks, dusty and deteriorated, at the firm’s Munich museum before it started going through a meticulous restoration process. BMW’s experts calculated that this would be a complex work that would take two years. But that’s when we’ll fall in love once again with the King of rock ‘n roll’s elegant roadster.

“We use visionary concept vehicles like the BMW Vision Future Luxury to show where we may be going with these themes in the future […] The BMW Vision Future Luxury – with its innovative technologies and with meticulous precision and quality in every detail – takes our thinking on modern luxury a logical stage further.” Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design
With the opulent BMW Vision Future Luxury, the Bavarian company has surpassed even its own boundaries in terms of exclusivity and luxury. Up until now the most sumptuous model line was the 7 Series, but with this prototype it seems BMW has inaugurated a newer model line, perhaps even a new era. Exclusivity comes with innovation, two inseparable qualities that have come to distinguish the quality of BMW Group. And in this instance, those qualities have been especially elevated. Karim Habib, Director of BMW Design, summarizes the prototype design approach that anticipates the future of the firm: “The design of the BMW Vision Future Luxury is the messenger of our philosophy of modern luxury, one in which innovative technologies play a key and vital role. These innovations deliver a new, multifaceted luxury experience that spans intelligent lightweight engineering, innovative interior design and a radically new user interface design.”
Spacious and dynamic The long wheelbase, short overhangs and low, set-back passenger cabin lend the stretched silhouette of the prototype a refined dynamism. Perhaps the greatest visual impact, one that reveals the true nature of the vehicle, is provided by the surface of the body, with its form handsculpted by expert modellers. The scintillating bronze-colour finish further enhances the fabulous effect. Beyond the extent of the vehicle’s dimensions, two small parts stand out not for their size, but for the striking effect generated by their form: the side mirrors, designed to appear as continuations of the chrome window trims, they complete the exterior personality of the car with their aerodynamic and ethereal beauty.
Futuristic doors The use of carbon fibre in the construction of the BMW Vision Future Luxury allows the design of doors with an amazingly airy aspect. By using the new carbon material, it was possible to reduce the size of the pillar that separates the door openings. The new unobtrusive pillar is integrated into the seat frames, the doorsills and the centre console and, as the doors open in opposite directions, there’s a greater sense of space.
34
Cutting-edge illumination At the front, the lean contours of the headlights also hint at the innovative technology sheltering behind them: BMW Laserlight. This new technology paves the way for a very flat and dynamic interpretation of the typical BMW twin round headlamps and the concentrated, parallel light beam is up to ten times more intense than that of an LED system. The reduced energy consumption and packaging requirements of laser lights make this technology a prime candidate for use in future vehicles.
Looking at the back of the car, the rear lighting is unprecedented on a BMW. The organic LED lights anticipate a new direction in the classic L-shaped design of the taillights. The BMW Vision Future Luxury’s L-shaped rear lights comprise a large number of small, likewise L-shaped OLEDs. Organic LEDs are not only extremely thin as well as flexible, they also produce very uniform illumination over their entire surface. Due to their very thin dimensions, and since they do not require reflectors in order to produce the desired broad light dispersion, they open up completely new ways of using light in and around the vehicle.
Subtractive modelling The guiding principle behind the interior design of BMW Vision Future Luxury is called "subtractive modelling". This means that the vehicle architecture is composed of a succession of layers of different materials and levels. An initial base layer of fine carbon fibre is followed by a functional level featuring user interface components, control and display interfaces and lighting functions, which in turn is followed by a further structural, load-bearing layer of aluminium for additional strength. Finally, the top layers comprise wood, then

ted into the wood, accentuates the welcoming atmosphere. A thick, exquisite pure silk carpet completes the exclusive selection of interior materials.

High-tech interior
In the cockpit, the BMW Vision Future Luxury offers a luxurious personal space. Firstly, the driver’s space is designed with a comfortable wrap-around control panel. Passengers in the rear will enjoy comfort comparable to sitting in a luxurious lounge. Two large seats, a retractable table, the angled Rear Seat Displays and the rigid backs of the front seats create a very private ambience, sectioning this area off from the rest of the interior. The division between darker materials in the upper areas and light materials in the lower areas creates a feeling of warmth and a luxurious sense of space. Only the most sumptuous materials are used to finish the elegant interior. The finest-quality leather in Batavia brown and a lighter Silk shade, the sensuous feel of nubuck leather and the all add to the charm of the design. Three ingeniously arranged and interconnected screens surround the driver of the BMW Vision Future Luxury. This arrangement visually facilitates control of all the information provided by the car. The left-hand display presents vehicle-related information, while in the centre a programmable cluster displays speedometer, rev counter and other information, as well as additional which is displayed when relevant. The right-hand display – the Driver Information Display – provides additional informational data and entertainment. The driver also has the option of controlling all these functions by voice command. The primary driver display is the “contactanalogue” BMW Vision Head Up Display, which augments the driver’s view of the real world by projecting information directly in the driver’s line of sight onto the road. This technology gives a new dimension to driver assistance functions such as Speed Limit Info, where
road signs can be identified and highlighted in the driver’s field of view, or the Traffic Light Assistant, which provides real-time information about traffic light phasing. In place of a central shared information display for driver and front passenger, the BMW Vision Future Luxury offers front passengers their own Passenger Information Display. This display is connected to the Driver Information Display via a touch-sensitive panel, where information can be exchanged between driver and front passenger. Without risk of distracting the driver, the front passenger can control the relevant functions using the touch interface controlled iDrive Controller. The displayed information is also available to the passengers in the rear, where two carbon-trimmed screens and a removable touchpad put the finishing touch to the integrated user interface concept of the BMW Vision Future Luxury. These displays can communicate with the front displays and also with the BMW ConnectedDrive services. All content and functions can be controlled from the rear seats using the detachable Rear Seat Touch Command Tablet in the centre console.

Sumptuous, decorated with hand-crafted marquetry and art deco details, the Rolls-Royce Phantom Pinnacle Travel Collection was inspired by the legendary elegance of classic cross-continental luxury train travel.
Only fifteen Rolls-Royce Phantom Pinnacle Travel Collection cars have been made and they form part of a limited collection designed by the team at Bespoke Design Studios, Rolls-Royce’s creative division in Goodwood, England that’s dedicated to producing vehicles of the utmost exclusivity, manufactured to the exacting fancies of their clients. The English term “bespoke” is equivalent to the North American term “custom-made”. Synonymous with "tailored" and "hand-crafted", the term arose among the tailors in London’s Mayfair neighbourhood centuries ago to designate tailored clothing and, more specifically, those manufactured using moulds unique to each client. In the last five years, a successful new movement of bespoke goods has been increasingly important in the luxury market and the trend has even extended to the software market. Almost 95% of RollsRoyce cars are customised to the clients’ wishes, reinforcing the firm’s image as a renowned luxury brand that meets the demands of its customers. Unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show, the Rolls-Royce Phantom Pinnacle Travel Collection fits perfectly into this category, as its design was tailored to the Chinese market. For this reason, the car is especially sumptuous and adorned with voluptuously elegant art deco details. As a means of expressing its opulence, comfort and spaciousness, the car’ lines were drawn from the inspiration of classic intercontinental luxury trains.

Almost 95% of Rolls-Royce cars are customised to their owners’ exacting specifications.
If a two-tone paint finish is desired for the solid bodywork, the client may select from a sophisticated palette of colours. Very much like an invitation to travel, the exterior surfaces of the model presented by Rolls-Royce at the motor show were painted in Smoky Quartz and Cornish White, a colour-scheme that perfectly expressed the abstract motif representing a moving train. On the inside Seashell-coloured leather upholstery and Morello Red wool floor mats create a cosy and sensual atmosphere. The fantastic hand-crafted art deco motif marquetry, magically assembled from 230 individual pieces of wood, suggests a train speeding to the horizon and trailing plumes of steam in its wake. The motif is carried on to the leather door panels where the grey smoke embroidery is achieved through 24,633 stitches. With these limited editions, Rolls-Royce continues on a mission in which it is an experienced leader: the world of luxury goods tailored in accordance with their clients’ visions; in this case, a long, opulent and comfortable journey to the ends of Oriental splendour.

The London Design Festival
Poetry in motion
God has created nights furnished with dreams and figures in the mirror so that man feels he is a vain reflection. This is why we are frightened. Jorge Luis Borges, Argentine writer, 1899-1986
The Victoria and Albert Museum in London has been the nerve centre of the London design Festival since 2009. As part of the festival, which took place in September, the museum was again transformed with installations and events created by the world’s leading designers. British architects Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, in collaboration with the BMW Group, designed one of the most ingenious installation projects. The “Double Space for BMW” project combined the aesthetic fascination of motion with precision automotive and marine engineering. This experience was carried out in the V&A’s Raphael gallery, where two mirrored silver structures were suspended from the artful ceiling, each rotating on it's axis simultaneously or alternately with the other. Reflecting and distorting the remarkable Italian Renaissance works of Raphael, the installation produced an immersive effect on the visitors who were to view themselves reflected in a surprisingly distorted and endless space. Raphael Sanzio of Urbino’s cartoons (studies, rather than paintings), with their geometric and ordered lines of perspective of an urban landscape, were the starting point for the development of the project. Raphael’s intention, so typical of the Cinquecento period, was to give his work a sense of three-dimensionality by creating the illusion of depth and realism, which, with this fantastic installation, became broken into a multiplicity of reflections of infinite vanishing points and figures. It is precisely this absence of central reference points, order and hierarchy caused by the temporary installation that transforms the gallery into a postmodern phenomenon.

Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby studied architecture at Royal College of Art in London and have designed collections for such giants of the design world as Giulio Cappellini, Magis, Benini, Swarovski, Flos and Vitra; they have collaborated with Levi Strauss and Coca-Cola; they designed the first Stella McCartney store in New York and have been honoured with a multitude of prestigious design awards. Many of their creations are on permanent display at the Victoria & Albert Museum, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and London’s Design Museum. And in 2012 they were commissioned to design the Olympic Torch for the Summer Olympics in London. Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby’s work is best characterised by their functionality, lack of excess and their willingness to experiment with new materials and technologies. The ordered and methodical “Double Space for BMW – Precision & Poetry in Motion” installation is very representative of the British designers’ style and, in keeping with the nature of the venue, also corresponds with the efforts of Renaissance artists. What really makes the poetic and emotional completed work such a success is the pleasing contrast with the rationalist effort. It can certainly be said that the installation represents a philosophical paradox, one in which chance, the chaotic duplications of reflections, and the labyrinthine sense of space created by the seemingly infinite reflections illustrate the notion of an extremely disturbing modern world where there is no monopoly on the truth. A world that has, as Borges describes, “… no obverse nor reverse, nor outer wall nor secret centre.”
The work of Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby generates structures showing ingenuity and simplicity, two qualities they share with BMW. 51

BMW i TEAMS UP WITH SOHO HOUSE Soho House was founded in London in 1995 as a private members club for those in film, media and the creative industries. Today it has more than three thousand members and anyone wishing to join must be added to a long waiting list and hope for the best. The Soho House Group offers its members sophisticated hotels and house rentals in Europe, the United States and Canada, along with restaurants, bars and spas. While each site is different they all share the concept of feeling comfortably at home in a bohemian-chic atmosphere. Some of the properties operate only as private member clubs but others offer rooms to guests who are not necessarily members. Each enclave has its own restaurant and many offer the Cowshed spa, while others even have a private cinema. Beginning this year the BMW Group, through its electric automotive division, BMW i, has partnered with Soho House, and through the club’s twelve main exclusive lodgings, it will provide BMW i3 vehicles to guests so that they may explore. Soho House and BMW i will also participate in cultural events by collaborating on an international arts program to be developed throughout various Soho House locations. The initial event at the Soho House in London coincided with the celebration of the partnership with an exclusive art talk between the photographer Juergen Teller and Chris Dercon, director of the Tate Modern: “The Naked Truth? Nudity, fashion, and the photographic image today.”

Speculating on the Transport As part of the 12th edition of the London Design Festival which was held in September, the Designjunction exhibit showed 180 design and installation products. The online design magazine Dezeen and MINI took part, joining forces to create the original Frontiers: The Future of Mobility exhibition. The six designers that took part in this exhibit all have youth on their side but are making their mark in the creative world. With projects based on the new MINI Hatch, they took that as an archetype to explore new possibilities in the area of design, technology and science orientated towards the future of transport. The six come from backgrounds as distinctive as biology, arts, industrial design and architecture. Daisy Ginsberg conceived 112 miniature vehicles that illustrate her particular vision that combines design with synthetic biology. Daisy sees a future in which automobiles will be like living organisms, genetically modified and with the ability to adapt to its user. Dominic Wilcox’s car is inspired by Durham Cathedral’s stained glass windows. The inventor says vehicles of the future will dispense with drivers and will be totally receptive. For Keiichi Matsuda, the future is a lot closer and already in sight. His short film explores the possibilities of a reality enhanced by the future, which includes digital information and personalised traffic lights for each driver.
An interactive doll inspired by figures on the instrument board is the perfect intelligent companion for the driver of the future. Mateo Plummer-Fernández created this fun adviser that connects to the car’s GPS so as to give instructions and become a portable private secretary. The offering from Lucy McRae, an architect and interior designer, transports us to space. She designed an empty space that conditions astronauts’ bodies to deal with zero gravity and avoid, for example, resulting osteoporosis. And finally Pernilla Ohrstedt centres her investigation on 3D city cartography. Heightening the scope of Google Maps, the designer plays with the idea of virtual travel instead of travelling in your own body.

Easy charging for electric and hybrid cars The high-voltage batteries of the BMW i3 and BMW i8 can be quickly and easily charged by using the BMW i Wallbox, part of the 360 ° ELECTRIC product range. The crucial advantage of inductive power supply over conventional charging stations is the cable-free connection between the supply point and the vehicle’s high-voltage battery. The induction charging system makes life easier for the owners of electric because the driver can simply start the charging process at the push of a button using the vehicle’s own operating system. Data is transmitted via a WiFi connection between vehicle and charging station. Carmakers Daimler and the BMW Group have signed an agreement on the joint development and implementation of a standardised technology for inductive charging of electric cars and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Besides development of a simpler system, another objective is diminishing the time of load for the energy transmission. It takes less than two hours to charge the BMW i8 using a fully working prototype of an inductive charging station. As with today’s BMW i Wallbox, the inductive power supply systems of the future will also make it possible to activate and monitor the charging process from a smartphone. The smartphone app will let drivers call up the data transmitted online on the battery’s charge status, for instance, or the time remaining until charging is complete.
New engines for the BMW 5 Series The BMW 5 Series sedan and touring models continue to extend their market leadership, and the introduction of a new generation of four-cylinder diesel engines for the model line once again optimises the already excellent relationship between performance and fuel efficiency. The new 2-litre engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology will premiere on the BMW 518d and BMW 520d and will increase power output by about 5 kW. At the same time the average fuel consumption according to the EU test cycle has been reduced by about .4 litres per100 kilometres, while CO2 emissions were reduced by 10 grams per kilometre. The line’s entry models, the BMW 518d Sedan and the family-friendly BMW 518d Touring, now enjoy a power output of 110 kW/150 hp and maximum torque of 400 Nm. While the new 4-cylinder engine models deliver 140 kW/150 hp with a maximum torque of 400, or 20 Nm greater than the earlier engine models. The new engine is mounted on the BMW 520d Sedan and the BMW 520d Touring, as well as the models equipped with the intelligent four-wheel drive system: the BMW 520d xDrive and BMW 520d xDrive Touring. The eight-speed Steptronic transmission, also the product of careful development, is offered as an alternative to the manual six-speed transmission on rear-wheel drive models and is standard equipment on those with four-wheel drive.

The second generation of the Sports Activity Coupé X6, of which almost 250,000 have been sold, enjoys a special status among BMW’s X models, which can be explained by its irresistible image, the renewed range of low consumption engines and comes totally equiped for the series.
Fluid and muscular lines With respect to the design, the new BMW X6 maintains the identity of its predecessor, thanks to dynamic proportions and characteristic fluid lines in this series that symbolise its agile maneuverability. Modifications have been few but sufficient to give it a breath of fresh air. As well as modifying its length which now extends to 4909 millimetres (32 more than before), its weight is now 40 kilos less on this model, thanks to the use of innovative lightweight materials. Highlighted aesthetic interventions are destined to soften while highlighting some of its lines. Therefore, the front, which resembles
the BMW X5 in many ways, incorporates new self-adapting LED headlights capable of detecting the vehicle that drives the wrong way and automatically corrects it. The air breathers are also notable, located behind the front fins. The rearguard presents a more narrow appearance and in addition, a new fold extending down from the rear mudguard links it with the BMW X4. For the exterior of the new BMW X6, you can choose between two classic paint works and nine metallic ones. The range of colours includes the new brilliant Sparkling Storm and Flamencorot, also with a brilliant finish. The new BMW X6 can be optionally kitted out with aluminium running boards and a boot in brilliant black and satin aluminium.
Much more kit for the series The series kit in the new BMW X6 has been considerably extended in comparison with the previous mode. The offering is enormous and surprising. Among the modifications you can find:
Active bonnet. Should an accident take place between a pedestrian or a cyclist, the back part of the bonnet automatically lifts up. That means it widens the space should there be a loss of shape and reduces the risk of any physical damage. Smart Open. Automatically opens the boot. SIM Card. This card is indispensable when it comes to making an intelligent emergency call and automatically locating the car and detecting the seriousness of an accident. In addition, the car offers internet access and the use of a Personal Assistant. Hands-free system and USB port. The backs of the three back seats can collapse in a 40:20:40 sequence. This allows the boot’s volume to be upped from 580 to 1,525 litros (75 litres more than its predecessor’s boot). Interior rearview mirror with automatic antidazzle function. Bizone or dual heating. Surround View reverse camera. Heated leather upholstery for the front seats. Light, 19-inch, alloy tyres. Bi-xenon headlight with an enormous illumination capacity.
65
The extreme sports lines on the new BMW X6 match the robustness of a BMW X with the typical dynamic elegance of one of the brand’s coupés. Pure innovation and much more kit.

BMW EfficientDynamics technology enhanced for the series With the Driving Experience Control selector located on the central console, you can activate the Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes as well as the Eco Pro mode. Activating the Eco Pro mode means the unit of control over the motor modifies the accelerator’s and the gear box’s parameters to allow a driving method that optimises the engine’s low revolution consumption. It also specifically controls the specific power consumption mode for the car’s electric equipments and the exterior rear-view mirrors, which can also improve energy efficiency. Once the Eco Pro mode has been activated, you can make use of the “glide” function. In this case, driving at between 50 and 160 km/h, the propulsor ensemble disconnects the moment the driver takes their foot of the accelerator and doesn’t hit the brake. In these conditions the new BMW X6 seems to be planing, without producing a single moment of engine dragging. That means consumption is minimal.
68
OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT The BMW X6 comes in two aesthetic lines in addition to the series: Pure Extravagance and the elegant and powerful M Sport package. The Pure Extravagance design line enhances exterior and interior features, adding striking high-quality details. Among them, the visible stainless steel protectors under the front and rear skirts, decorative trims illuminated on the aluminium stirrups and fabulous 20-inch alloy wheels with V-shaped spokes in a two-tone finish. With a leather interior, seats are upholstered in Ivory/Black or Cognac/Black. In addition, the inside of the door frames and the dashboard are lined with black leather. This exclusive setting is rounded off with enhancing trim in fine American oak and finished with a Fineline Stripe. The Pure Extravagance option can be purchased separately for both the exterior and interior of the car, to complement it. Dynamic qualities are increased with the M Sports Package. The sporty details are different, for example, there are large front air inlets, striking side skirt coatings and a rear diffuser under the rear flap. The wheel arches and the bottom edges of the side flaps are the same colour as the rest of the body. The M Sports Package includes Bright Shadow Line by BMW Individual, a line finish, as well as 19-inch, double spoke, light-alloy wheels. Besides sports technology such as the auto-adapting M chassis, dynamic damper control system with special setting and a pneumatic suspension system on the rear axle with auto-levelling regulation function. Finally, so as to personalise terrain that suits the driver, you can choose the most exclusive BMW Individual line.
Be athletic The efficient total and permanent xDrive traction offers dynamism and mobility across all the BMW X6 editions. These qualities are helped by the incredible system of regulation and adjustment such as the Dynamic Performance with active Dynamic Drive inclination suppression and the dynamic DDC shock absorption. And in line with the type of driving one requires, the lucky driver can configure the chassis to their liking.
More ecological and powerful engines The new BMW X6 engines, besides heightening their maximum potential, also take a step forward with regard to efficiency, reducing the consumption level by 22%. But an engine’s efficiency and ecology isn’t just measured in CO2 emissions; the new BMW X6 has a mechanical range adapted to meet the Euro 6 standard pollution norm, whose main constraint is a significant reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) levels. To achieve this end, diesel engines incorporate systems such as an NOx accumulator catalyst, a unit of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and the special AdBlue additive (a 32.5% urea solution), technical solutions that enable NOx levels to be lowered.

The new BMW S 1000 RR
Born for the track The BMW S 1000 RR is the most breathtaking way to enjoy the twistiest roads, whether on a racecourse or in the city.
Motorrad, the motorcycle division of BMW Group, never rests. The company continues to captivate the market with each new model introduction. And with their newest offering, the time has arrived for a motorcyle that surpasses the usual limits of sport bikes. The new BMW S 1000 RR exploits the most dynamic facets from within the Bavarian firm’s group of sports motorcycles, and combines that dynamism with touring qualities that allow a comfortable ride over long distances. In fact, the motorcycle stands out in all riding circumstances: as an everyday ride for daily commuting, to enjoy on winding country roads or making the fastest laps on a track. And, above all, it stands out for a design that’s crisper and more modern than the prior model, a design that showcases its increased power. The bike is available in Racing Red with Light White, Black Storm metallic and also in the BMW Motorsport colours of Lupin Blue metallic, Light White and Racing Red.
Three riding modes The new RR comes with three selectable riding modes as standard: “Rain”, “Sport” and “Race”. When the “Rain” mode is selected, for wet road conditions, the throttle response becomes gentler thanks to the quick response of the ASC traction control system. On dry roads, the “Sport” selection makes available the powerful engine’s full potential of 146 kW/199 hp. The “Race” mode has been specially designed for use on racetracks, as well as country roads, that have perfect road traction conditions. Here again, the rider can enjoy engine’s full power combined with direct throttle response. The Ride Modes Pro feature, which adds two extra sports riding modes, “Slick” and “User”, can be ordered as a factory option.

New on-board network The new BMW S 1000 RR is equipped with an electronic circuit that permits the rider to adjust the predetermined function values. This network allows the inclusion of a greater number of electronically controlled functions, like the fully electronic throttle system that reduces the effort necessary to operate the throttle grip. Additionally, the circuitry allows for the inclusion of a series of optional systems, among those are cruise control and the HP Pro, for changing gears. For optimum clarity of the bike’s operational data, the LCD display on the new RR has 640 segments instead of the previous 320, while the analogue rev counter now features a new and even easier-to-read scale.
Redesigned chassis The new chassis geometry allows the rider greater front wheel feedback for better handling. The new BMW S 1000 RR is also more manoeuvrable, supports more precise driving in extreme situations and provides even better traction and feedback from the rear wheel. The main part of the chassis is an aluminium bridge frame that is welded together from four individual cast pieces, with the engine tilted forward at an angle of 32 degrees. Both the main frame and the lighter sub-frame were redesigned for the new model. The damping elements have also been improved. The new model incorporates a regulatory system of rebound and shock compression using a ten-click scale. By incorporating the DDC (Dynamic Damping Control), a system for regulating chassis response, the chassis system reacts automatically to manoeuvres, such as braking, accelerating and cornering, as well as to the state of the road surface. Front wheel location continues to be handled by an upside-down fork with 46 mm (1.8) stanchions, which guarantees excellent braking stability and clear feedback to the rider about dynamic conditions. The motorcycle’s fine response characteristics, wide adjustment range and enormous damping reserves offer supreme handling dynamics, even when powering round a race track.
The powerful engine Thanks to improvements to the propulsion system, the acceleration and recovery capacity of the bike is even more impressive. The primary goal when defining the propulsion system of the BMW S 1000 RR was to increase horsepower and torque, as well as to optimise manoeuvrability of the bike in order to strike the perfect balance of both factors to achieve outstanding performance. The geometry of the intake and exhaust ducts was modified, while the cams on the intake camshaft were given a fuller contour. In keeping with these modifications, lighter intake valves (2 g less per valve) have also been employed, along with accordingly adapted valve springs.

BMW M4 Convertible
Fine sports car pedigree
A worthy successor to the M3, the superlative sporting qualities of the BMW M4 Convertible are the results of BMW’s extensive racing circuit experience. The new BMW M4 is representative of a tradition that has endured for 26 years. The model line originated in 1986 with the introduction of the BMW M3, which was principally developed to satisfy the registration requirements of the DTM (German Touring Car Championship). Though designed for the production car racing circuit, the Bavarian company introduced a convertible model two years later due to public demand. Since that initial introduction there have been four variants of the model, all leading up to the most evolved version, the BMW M4 Convertible.
Clean, aerodynamic design If the design of the M3 model was based on the form of the 3 Series, the design of the new BMW M4 is very much based on the 4 Series and, because of the unmistakable bloodlines of the M3 Sports car, this confers its own particular flair to the already elegant 4 Series profile. The fantastic performance and efficiency of the BMW M4 are thanks in part to its ingenious aerodynamics. Three of the design elements that minimize the effects of drag are the markedly sculpted apron, the large intakes that guide cooling air through the front and the smooth, low silhouette. These elements also contribute to the vehicle’s exceptional maneuverability. Various elements, including "air curtains" and typical M gills with "air breathers" integrated behind the front wheels, minimizing turbulence in the outer zone of said wheels. The exterior design also displays aerodynamically optimized, twinstalk mounted side mirrors, a power domed hood and the characteristic BMW M double-spoke wheels. And although the proportions are identical, the new BMW M4 appears wider.

Precise and dynamic maneuverability
The intelligent use of lightweight materials, like aluminium and carbon-fibre reinforced plastic, endows the BMW M4 with exceptional handling dynamics, as well as outstanding efficiency. The numerous measures adopted in order to reduce the weight of a ready to drive model (that is, with fuel, oil, etc.) has resulted in a DIN standard of 1,750 Kg, which amounts to about 60 Kg less than the previous model.
The BMW M4 has rear wheel drive that employs Active M differential on the rear drive shaft of the convertible, which achieves increased traction and stability while driving, thanks to electronically controlled multi-disc lock. The Active M control unit is connected to the DSC system (Dynamic Stability Control), which also takes into account the rate of speed, wheel rotation and the angle of rotation of the car about its own vertical axis. Thanks to this system, the optimized traction capacity means the car will remain stable in extreme driving conditions, even when swiftly accelerating out of a curve.
A convertible in twenty seconds With the touch of a button, the dynamic BMW M4 transforms into an elegant convertible in just twenty seconds. The metal roof folds into three parts and has even better acoustic insulation than the M3. And in the interior, the sound-absorbing headliner reduces wind noise and provides greater comfort even in winter. The top can also be lowered when the car is travelling at speeds up to 11 mph. With the optional redesigned and wider windblock that redirects wind turbulence to above the passenger compartment, and along with the optional three-setting seat heating that reaches to the neck area, it’s now possible to drive at high speeds with the top down, even in colder weather.
Auto racing technology Just like the powerful 217 kW / 431 hp six-cylinder engine, other components of the BMW M4 Convertible drivetrain were also designed for use in automobile racing conditions. Cooling for the engine employs an ingenious system composed of the main radiator plus two side radiators for circulating both hot and cold temperatures; additionally, this system cools the motor oil and the transmission (including the optional M Double Clutch transmission). Even the motor oil delivery system is the result of the ample experience accumulated on the racing circuit: when accelerating rapidly, or hard braking, an oil extraction pump and a sophisticated oil return system situated close to the turbocharger help to maintain uninterrupted oil circulation.
Excellent brake response BMW M compound brakes are standard equipment on the M4. These brakes are characterized by their lighter weight, fine response, excellent braking capacity and their high resistance to loss of efficiency due to “fading”.
A sporty, high-tech interior The sporty personality of the new convertible is expressed through a host of classic BMW M equipment details. Among these are the circular instruments with white graphics, the leather steering wheel with chrome trim and contrast stitching, M gearshift and, additionally, M-style finishers on the door sills and the driver’s footrest. The two individual rear seats have a fold-down armrest and ergonomically moulded backs, so they are very comfortable and offer excellent lateral support. The new BMW M4 Convertible features several driver assistance services as standard which include the new generation of navigation Professional, the High Beam Assistant and the Head-Up Display, which comes with additional M-specific functions such as a gear display, rev counter and Optimum Shift Indicator.

RADO
Interview with Matthias Breschan Matthias Breschan has been the CEO of the Rado Group since January 2011. An Austrian, he graduated from the Vienna School of Economics and worked in sales and marketing in the telecommunication industry before beginning his successful career in world of fine watches. As President of the prestigious firm, he is responsible for strengthening the innovative tradition Rado and securing the prestige of the company as a pioneer in the development of unconventional materials.
BMW: Some years ago Rado revitalised its image. In what direction has it taken?
MB: For some time, Rado has produced pioneering watches that underscore our leadership in the use of new materials and technologies. This trend goes from the True Thinline, the first ceramic watch using a monobloc housing, up to the Rado HyperChrome Ceramic Touch, noted for being the first touch function ceramic watch. We also pioneered the use Esenza Ceramic Touch technology. BMW: Rado is a leader in the development of ultra-resistant materials. What are the characteristics of the high-tech ceramic that the firm introduced in 1993?
MB: Actually, the firm introduced the high-tech ceramic in 1986 and it’s an innovation that we’re particularly proud of and continue to use. This ceramic is an ideal material to use in making fine watches because it’s hard and light, and it permits the creation of a scratch-resistant watch. It adapts to body temperature and is a hypoallergenic material that achieves a fabulously comfortable watch. Initially we only produced this material in a black colour and we later developed the hightech ceramic in white, grey and plasma. The plasma ceramic, which is very similar to metal in its colour and texture, is treated in a special oven with a temperature of 20,000º C in a process Rado discovered that allows us to manufacture an extremely resistant watch with a metallic finish. The company’s latest technological advancement, unveiled at BaselWorld 2014, is the grey hightech ceramic, a colour tone that’s extremely difficult to achieve. BMW: How does the ceramic touch work?
MB: Rado introduced touch technology with the Esenza Ceramic Touch in 2013, and a year later we launched the HyperChrome; to which we added a further convenience: aside from the local time, there’s also a second time zone located at six o’clock. This touch technology works with sensors located within the ceramic casing. The sensors detect the movement of the fingers, so a subtle touch and a slight drag to the left, sets the hours, and to the right, the minutes. So the time setting can be easily adjusted. It would be impossible to implement this technology in a metal watch. The time is set in the same manner on the HyperChrome Ceramic Touch Dual Timer, and it only takes a touch at 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock on the bezel to adjust the second time zone. This model is truly bewitching.
91
pano rama BMW: What is the Rado V10K like, the watch certified as the world's most
92
scratch-resistant?
MB: The Rado V10K is made with a layer of high-tech diamonds, which is as strong as natural diamond. The name comes from its hardness, 10,000 vickers. The V10K has already won five major design awards. BMW: Many Rado brand ambassadors are from the tennis world. Why?
MB: The company has been involved with the tennis world for more than twenty years, and this year Rado was the Official Timekeeper for fourteen tennis tournaments. Our ambassadors, Andy Murray, Agnieszka Radwanska and Julia Görges, are great tennis players and perfectly embody the core values of the firm: persistence, determination, desire to go further, accuracy and attention to detail. There’s even a very glamorous collection inspired by the sport: the HyperChrome Court Collection. BMW: With respect to design, which do you think are the most cuttingedge models?
MB: Design is part of our DNA and we have many iconic watches. The Rado Ceramica, for example, with it's fully integrated case and bracelet; the r5.5, designed in collaboration with Jasper Morrison, the great British designer; the most recent Rado HyperChrome or the minimalist Rado DiaMaster RHW1. Our watches have won over thirty awards for the unique way their design is combined with singular, hightech materials.
BMW: Is there a watch model preferred by women?
MB: The majority of our designs are unisex. Everything depends on the taste, although women tend ultimately to choose " boyfriend watches", that is to say, large watches. The only collection particularly geared towards women is the high-tech and delicately designed Esenza Ceramic Touch. BMW: What’s the next project you’ll be directing for Rado?
MB: We have several exciting projects underway. The most immediate is BaselWorld 2015, where we will present our latest collections. Hope to see you there.

BRAZIL
The first BMW vehicle assembled in South America The Brazilian plant, located in the state of Santa Catarina, is the site of the first car assembled for the BMW Group in South America. The first vehicle released was the BMW 328i ActiveFlex, a model specifically designed to run on both gasoline and ethanol, thus meeting the requirements of the Brazilian market. The new BMW Group site covers an area of about 1.5 million square metres of which 500,000 square metres will be used for production. By adding a new plant in Brazil, the BMW Group is further expanding its global production network, which now includes 30 production and assembly sites in 14 countries on four continents. Over the course of the next few years, more than 200 million euros will be invested in the plant, resulting in a productive capacity of up to 30,000 vehicles annually. The production portfolio is supposed to comprise the following models: MINI Countryman, BMW 1 Series 5-door model, BMW 3 Series Sedan, BMW X1, and BMW X3.

An electric end of year Last December, a group of journalist from Brazil had the opportunity to test two vehicles with truly unique qualities for two days around Miami streets. On the one hand, the BMW i8, the super sports car with the combination of technologies such as the BMW TwinPower Turbo and the BMW eDrive to achieve a total power output of 266 kW/362 hp, which results in an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4,4 seconds. On the other hand, they tested the new BMW M4, the evolution of a BMW icon, that marks the start of a new chapter in the fascinating history of the manufacturer known by its high performance sports cars, BMW M GmbH. These vehicles, each in tis segment, showed why BMW is known worldwide for its sportiveness. Two fascinating cars, different form each other, united by their sportiveness.
The existence of numerous free trade agreements, including the region served by NAFTA, as well as treaties with the EU and MERCOSUR states, were key reasons for choosing the Mexican location. Other benefits considered were the highly qualified local workforce, a solid network of established suppliers and the well-developed infrastructure.

A lap around America Taking full advantage of their participation at the 2014 Mexico International Motorcycle Show, which was held on the 2nd through the 4th October at Expo Bancomer, BMW Motorrad announced the successful arrival of the “La Vuelta a América” riders to Mexico. After crossing through twenty countries and hundreds of cities in the Americas, the enthusiasm of the Mexican riders demonstrated that motorcycle tourism is a fascinating way to explore the world and a great way to combine adventure, fun and skill. Mounted on their BMW F 800 GS motorcycles, Ernesto Acevedo and his team of Motoquest riders completed an unprecedented journey that saw them travel all around the American continents on a ride of over 84,000 kilometres, and managing to reach four cardinal points as distant from each other as can be reached on wheels alone: Prudoe Bay, Anchor Point, Ushuaia (Bahiá Lapataia) and Joao Pessoa (Cabo Branco). Along this fourteen-month journey the riders visited the major cities of the Americas and faced tough roads and difficult routes, such as Dalton Highway in Alaska, the Atacama Desert and the Austral route in Chile, as well as some segments of Argentina’s Route 40.

“The performance of the motorcycles was extraordinary all along. In the largest and busiest cities of America, on the winding asphalt of the highways or when traversing the most challenging dirt roads, there was always one constant: the BMW F 800 GS’s versatility,” said Ernesto Acevedo. The success of “La vuelta a América” reaffirms the quality and capacity of the Bavarian firm’s motorcycles to reach any destination and offer an unforgettable riding experience.
Something new in California At the end of 2014, various media from Latin America visited this state to take a closer look at the interesting tasks performed at the offices of BMW Group DesignworksUSA. Apart from this “trip to the future” they had the possibility to test two opposing models on Californian curves, both of unique appeal: the BMW M4 Convertible and the new MINI 5-door. The attending media could not only soak up news but also prove that it doesn’t rain south of California.

Gustavo Dalinha Each year Buenos Aires is lit up with the Gallery Nights event, when galleries and cultural spaces change their usual schedule and open their doors in the evening until ten at night to present the best art in the city. The exhibition, "Apertura" or "Aperture", by Gustavo Dalinha, curated by María Pimentel, was available for viewing during the year’s last cycle of traditional Gallery Nights. The show took place in the cultural space of the Brazilian Embassy in Buenos Aires and was sponsored by MINI Argentina. Born on the border between Uruguay and Brazil, Gustavo Dalinha has lived in Germany for more than twenty years. “I’m a specimen from the border. I am a border,” the artist asserted. His journey through the different continents lends Dalinha’s work a very personal style with dynamic cultural references and a mystical vision. The themes explored by the artist for the work in this exhibition are light, cracks and hieroglyphs that refer to the search for the hidden, that which has been encrypted. With regard the 39 paintings of this show, all done on handmade paper using ancient techniques and divided into five series, Maria Pimentel explains: "The whole show is a spiritual journey, a spiritual search that uses the border as a crack, a door and a passage to other planes."

The artist began working on this series of paintings in a studio in the Buenos Aires neighbourhood of Belgrano and completed the project with the staging of an exhibition in Berlin in 1989, the year of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Dalinha’s evocative works lure the viewers to cross from the tangible world and delve into one of mystery, allowing them to pass through other planes of consciousness and explore a diffuse and unknown world and themselves.

Name: Enrique García-Vega Country: Panamá Models:
BMW 1802, 1974 BMW 325is Convertible, 1988 BMW 320 Touring, 1989
With his uncles as mentors, Enrique was initiated into the cult of automobile enthusiasts, though many years passed before he could fully devote himself to the pleasure of collecting cars. Of all the brands, he chose BMW because of the memories he had of watching them race when he was young: safe, efficient and, above all, highly competitive cars. He has three models in his collection: a 1974 BMW 1802 and two E30s, a 1988 BMW 325is Convertible and a 1989 BMW 320 Touring.
The collection began with the convertible in 2007 when his fiveyear old daughter asked for a toy convertible for her Barbie doll and Enrique forgot to buy it. The problem was resolved in a way that suited all the family: he bought the BMW 325is and gave it to his daughter, who will be allowed to drive it when she reaches the appropriate age. In the meantime, the family enjoys it for short rides and road trips, and Enrique takes care of the convertible as if it were another child until transferring it to it's owner. He purchased the BMW 325is Convertible at a great price because it was in such a sad state of disrepair, but managed to repair it to such an original pristine state that it looks like it travelled through time directly from the new car dealership. Everything from its air conditioning, electric mirrors, lights and electronically controlled retractable top are in perfectly original condition Enrique’s wife and two daughters also accompany him enthusiastically to his “nutty” car events. Surrounded by his women, he just travelled to Costa Rica for the second time, a journey of over 15 hours, to participate in the 2014 International Rally of Puntarenas. While the convertible is the family favourite, Enrique enjoys the more hands-on, manual gearshift experience of driving the BMW 1802, even if only on weekends. And the Touring is the everyday car because its automatic transmission and greater amenities. If luck allows, Enrique’s collection will expand, as the Panamanian BMW fan has his eye on an E21 and dreams of the crown jewel, a BMW 502 Convertible.
