ASK CRYSTAL Dear Crystal, I thought I’d found the man of my dreams but now my life is a living hell. Please help! I first met Dan nine months ago and it was love at first sight. We travelled all over Australia together, shared many wonderful experiences and seemed to click on every level. About three months ago he asked me to move in and I couldn’t have been happier. Life was perfect, but it all changed about three weeks ago when I asked him to pass me the chair from the kitchen. He went mental. He started yelling, and told me that because it didn’t have a back it was technically a stool. I told him to stop being silly and he hit me in the face, breaking my jaw. Now we barely talk and he spends most evenings drinking alone in his study. Last night, I woke to find him leaning over me with a knife in his hand and a strange smile on his face. I was terrified. What do I do?

Sally, Brisbane

Dear Sally, I’M afraid your boyfriend is right Sally. A chair without a back is, technically, a stool. If you’re serious about saving this relationship you’re going to have to do some serious

apologising. Try calling my stool helpline for more advice.

Dear Crystal, I’ve been obsessed with a boy at work for three years but never had the guts to tell him how I feel. He’s an extremely hot Sports Editor on a free weekly magazine called BBM and I sit right behind him. I’m supposed to design adverts all day but, to be honest, I spend most of the time checking out his sweet, sweet ass. I spied on him in the toilet once and his cock is enormous. It turned me so much I had to masturbate right there and then! Now he’s leaving the company. What should I do?

Kylie, Newtown

Dear Kylie, HAVE you got him a leaving present yet? Two words. Blow job. If you could get him a kebab for after he’s spurted as well, that would be perfect.

Sydney’s Top 5 City Views

Sydney is one of the most famous cities in the world; it has been attracting tourists for countless of years and has likely never failed to impress a single person. At the top of the very vast list of what makes this city so amazing is the stunning views. So weather you are passing through or here to stay a while, here are 5 of our favourite views of Sydney at Bridge Climb Sydney.

THE AIR

in front of Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair.

Flying into a major city is always thrilling; passing over the Sydney Opera House is enough to create a whole cabin full of goose bumps.

CIRCULAR QUAY

THE OBSERVATORY Sydney’s Observatory is one of its most underrated attractions but is absolutely incredible, even those who are not keen on learning about its astronomical history, it’s most certainly worth venturing up to Observatory Hill to enjoy a picnic with a view.

THE ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS The Sydney Botanic Garden makes for an incredible frolic whilst weaving through the flowers and trees, but regarding city views, head to the waterfront walkway on the northern end of the park. Here you can catch views of the Sydney Opera House framed by local flora and the best view can be seen at the outermost point of the park

Expat insight: Quality of life

Feature by Parry Ray

If you have emigrated to Australia from the UK, you have no doubt balanced a lot of factors: family, work, and friends, to name a few. One of the things that makes the transition to Australia so appealing in my opinion is the positive lifestyle and therefore an improved quality of life. Depending on where you have chosen to live, life may well be as fast paced as where you came from – it is certainly not the case that life is slower in Australia - but there is definitely a different vibe. And that is quite hard to quantify, after all an attractive prospect is a subjective thing. It could be as simple as the weather - the blue skies and more sunshine. I suppose with a foundation of warmer days and more sun - and none of us should belittle the positive effects of Vitamin D and how it makes us feel – there are many other things that slot into place.

Being more social, getting out and about more, visiting new places and making the time for pursuits that perhaps you didn’t make time for when you lived in the UK. From my own experience, I certainly made time for many more weekend trips and short getaways than I do here in London. One of my favourite trips was a few hours out of Sydney up the coast to a friend’s house in Salamander Bay. Circling back to the weather, I don’t know if this is a reasonable explanation, but comparing London and Sydney – two of my favourite cities in the world - I would say the sky feels more “open” or higher in Sydney and that makes a huge difference to me, and I have experienced cloudy days in Australia – but they are not as oppressive as they are in the UK. The reality is we all consider different things when we look for a positive lifestyle and what contributes a good quality of life – it is exactly that balancing act that results in us all choosing different places to live. But I have a soft spot for Australia because it really does have so many different aspects that make it a wonderful place to live…

Those who wish to see Sydney up close and personal, head straight into the heart at Circular Quay. This is a humbling experience to be so dwarfed by the Sydney Opera House whilst standing on its steps.

MILK BEACH Milk Beach is somewhat a secret local’s beach on Rose Bay and it boasts an uncrowded stretch of sand with a majestic distant view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It is also an amazing place to relax and cool off with a swim. We absolutely recommend that you check out these views before joining us at the Bridge Climb Sydney.

I was lying to get sex.” Jimmy Carr

If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s the English accent on the sat-nav in the car.” Tommy Tiernan This is the first time that Irish people go: ‘You’re going to England? Sure it’s full of terrorists. Come to Ireland. We’ve no terrorists. Ashes Banter As the Ashes Tournament draws ever closer, the team at bbmlive.com have started preparing for some good old fashioned Aussie bashing banter. Now we all know deep down that that the Matildas will be putting up a solid challenge so we Brits will just do what we do best and enjoy a few beers, sing some ridiculous songs and mock our way through defeet. If alternatively we pull one out the bag and give our hosts a run for their money, then the streets around Australia will be filled with our happy little rosy cheeked faces singing these corker Barmy Army Christmas Carols.

To celebrate our the Barmy Army bringing the troops together over the festive period we’ve pulled together some of our favourite Ashes songs from the Barmy Army song books which you can download at barmyarmy.com

Barmy Army Christmas Carols AWAY IN AUSTRALIA - Away in a Manger Away in Australia No time for their beds The Army were singing And clearing their heads We've won at the cricket We've won in the bar The only thing left is Bidding Ricky "au revoir"

Barmy Army Is All Here Good King Wenceslas The Barmy Army is all here We wish you Merry Christmas You may not like the songs we sing But when we've gone you'll miss us We're thrashing you by 3 to 1 KP, Cook and Bell When you come to England next...... We'll thrash you there as weeeeeeeeeell"

Hark, The Barmy Army Sing Hark the Herald Angels Sing Hark, the Barmy Army sing Cheering England is our thing Piece of pie and jug of beer We're all full of Christmas cheer We will raise our voices high Ashes victory is nigh Bumble's saying "start the car!" We are the better team by far Beaten in their own back yard Aussies take that oh so hard Hark, the Barmy Army sing We'll have the urn, England is King

We wish You A Barmy Test Match We Wish You a Merry Christmas We wish you a Barmy Test Match We wish you a Barmy Test Match We wish you a Barmy Test Match You've had a bad year Chorus Glad tidings we bring 'Cos you just can't win We wish you a Barmy Test Match And another crap year And you ain't got a chance of winning You ain't got a chance of winning You ain't got a chance of winning You're not even near And we won't go without the Ashes We won't go without the Ashes We won't go without the Ashes The urn's on its way here

Barmy Army Ashes Tour Songs Ball and Chain There is a house in New Orleans, They call the Rising Sun It's been the ruin of many a poor boy, oh Lord I know I'm one One foot on the platform, one foot on the train I'm going back to New Orleans, to my ball and chain 1,2, Ball and Chain! Ball and Chain! We came here with Backpacks you with Ball and Chain Ball and Chain! Ball and Chain! We came here with Backpacks you with Ball and Chain

Convict Colony (To the tune of Yellow Submarine) In the town where I was born, there lived a man who was a thief And he told me of his life, stealing bread and shagging sheep. So they put him in the nick, and then a magistrate he went to see He said "put him on a ship, to the convict

colony" You all live in a convict colony, a convict colony, a convict colony You all live in a convict colony, a convict colony, a convict colony

I Shagged Matlida I shagged Matilda, I shagged Matilda, I shagged Matilda and so did my mates, And she moaned and groaned and she took it up the Billabong, I shagged Matilda and so did my mates

The Aussies love the English The Aussies love the English, you might find it quite strange 'Cos we sent them all down under, with only balls and chains And when they see the English, they always shout and scream But when they had the chance to vote they voted for the Queen! God save your gracious Queen Long live your noble Queen God save your Queen (you're a convict) Send her victorious Happy and glorious Long to reign over you God save your Queen.

Strawberry Fields is coming… The annual celebration of art, sound and creative expression is taking over the Wildlands, the iconic paradise along the banks of the Murray River, for three days this November. Each year, the Fields offer up a diverse selection of both renowned and breakthrough electronic music from both Australia and beyond. Indulge yourself in the sensory feast, including soul shaking sound, world class decor, dozens of eclectic market stalls, artistic installations, live performance art, workshops, forum discussion and more. Here’s a few highlight acts to make sure you see at this year’s festival… Sampa The Great: This amply named poet and singer songwriter is set to be one of the must-sees at this years Strawberry Fields Festival! The free spirited traveller was born in Zambia, is now based in Sydney, and trust us when we say she is taking Australian hip-hop by storm! She has previously supported for the likes of Kendrick Lemar and Little Simz on their tours respectively. Expect fiery passion, rawness and effortless swagger in her performance. soundcloud.com/sampa-tembo

Harvey Sutherland and Bermuda: Harvey is a Melbourne based producer and keyboard player who is heading to Strawberry Fields with his live band Bermuda, named after his breakthrough 12”. They consist of Graeme Pogson on drums and Tamil Rogeon on electric strings. The three combined put on a show that consists of flair, pure energy and minimalism at its finest. soundcloud.com/harvey-sutherland

Total Giovanni: This fantastic five set earned their stripes through their visually stunning and high tempo live shows. With a mix of hip-hop, electric and indie it’s hard to tie these guys down to any one genre. Their reputation for turning small venues into pandemonium-

induced rooms is now being put to the test on the festival circuit with bigger crowds and spaces. Rest assured, they will not let you down. soundcloud.com/totalgiovanni

Peggy Gou Born and raised in South Korea, but now residing in Berlin, Peggy Gou is widely regarded as one of electronic music’s most exciting new talents. Known for her ties with Matt Edwards aka Radio Slave’s Rekids imprint where she released ‘The Art of War Part 1’, she has received enthusiastic support from international media including The Guardian, Resident Advisor, Mixmag, FACT, i-D, Thump and Dummy. After taking the plunge in 2016 to become a full time DJ and producer, 2017 has seen her justify the move with a string of remixes for high profile acts like The Martinez Brothers. She was also drafted by BBC Radio 1 for a month-long residency, and completed her first North American tour where she played her first ever Boiler Room show in New York. With her debut Australian tour looming this November, the future is looking very bright for Peggy Gou; definitely one to watch.

Mr Scruff: As a DJ, Andy Carthy aka Mr. Scruff plays across the board, flitting between soul, funk, hip hop, jazz, reggae, Latin, African,

ska, disco, house, funk, breaks, soundtracks and loads more, so there’s a little something for everyone at one of his live shows. As a producer he makes music that draws on these influences, with a large dose of cheek and good humour. A man of many talents, his cartoon drawings illustrate gig flyers, record sleeves and CD covers, and usually accompany him at gigs as live animated visuals – something that’s got to be seen.

Andrew Weatherall: Andrew Weatherall has paved the way with a well-respected career in British techno. As a producer mixing the sounds of Madchester to downbeat to experimental techno through the ’90s, Weatherall could’ve easily ridden the big beat like the Chemical Brothers or become a highprofile-DJ at the end of the decade, but instead chose to pursue – and in many ways define – a more cutting-edge, IDM approach. In his past, Weatherall remixed New Order’s “Worlds in Motion” and, along with Paul Oakenfold, the Happy Mondays’ “Hallelujah.” soundcloud.com/andrewweatherall

Having presented shows since the age of 15, her weekly slot on local institution PBS FM ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ is now celebrated as the essential start to every Friday night. All this air time also primed her to knock out guest spots on NTS, Red Light Radio, Worldwide and Dublab. In recent years, CC’s devotion has seen her graduate to touring DJ and main stage festival act. She’s lapped Australia three times in 12 months and ticked a large chunk of her bucket list – opening for Theo Parrish in Auckland, sound tracking the romantic Adriatic Sea at Dimensions and Soundwaves, Boiler Room and Meredith’s coveted Supernatural Amphitheatre. She’s also already made her mark at Strawberry Fields before; last year she featured between Move D and Moodymann and kept crowds dancing even through the pouring rain – we wonder what’s on her agenda for this year? soundcloud.com/ccdisco Friday, 17th November — Sunday, 19th November

5 Let Them Eat Cake Acts Who Induces FOMO Who doesn’t love a bit of cake? Especially if it is getting served on immaculately trimmed green gardens with sexy cocktails, the world’s best DJs and a 150-year old mansion serving as a backdrop. That is indeed the summation of the annual Let Them Eat Cake NYD at Werribee Mansion. Put it like this: You know that feeling when you look at Instagram photos of some random having the best time of their life, increasing your FOMO levels by 1000%? Well, that is the feeling you can experience at Cake to become the Insta uploader and the spreader of FOMO. It has truly become the best way to see in the new year, and with last year selling out this year should be well on its way to do the same as the lineup is pretty damn immense: Jasper James, Mall Grab, Palms Trax, Nadia Rose, Jon Hopkins…. In fact, it’s so good we struggled to whittle it down to our top 5 acts. Don’t sweat it though, we got there in the end so you don’t have too…

Apparat (DJ set) Apparat has been delivering the sort of soulful and melancholy sounds which ignites dem feels within the listener. (Check his classic album ‘Orchestra of Bubbles’ on B-Pitch Control, considered a stone cold classic for the electronica scene.) And don’t forget he is also one third of the

now-defunct supergroup Moderat alongside the Modeselektor boys. At Cake this time around we will see Apparat in DJ mode, and if his last Australian DJ tour is anything to go by, prepare yourself to be transfixed. In fact, an Apparat DJ set is so rare that there is only a handful of his sets online (of which this Boiler Room is one). Don’t miss out, who knows how long until we get to experience him in DJ mode again…

Kate Miller Do you like you music sautéed with a side of freshness? Well, look no further than Kate Miller. Kate’s a true blue Aussie who took the big jump to Berlin, a move which has payed off handsomely. For those in the know she is one of the most in-demand DJs roaming

that talent-rich city, becoming a regular guest DJ at Panorama Bar and About Blank alongside bookings across Europe. She lives on the cooler side of dance music, but straddles that fine line with such finesse that no dance floor can withstand her well educated musical selections. If you are looking to broaden your musical horizons make sure you don’t miss out on Kate Miller…

Jackmaster Party monster, house merchant and all-round good-guy-youwould-like-to-have-a-beer-with, Jackmaster might be the biggest party starter on the globe right now. Do you feel like life is getting you down? No problem, a quick search for any of his online mixes should remedy that. He is famous

for taking no prisoners once he hit the decks: rolling bass lines, oldschool fun, nu-skool touches of deftness, quick mixes to keep the energy up, the Scotsman knows his craft. And his taste-making skills are on display through his awesome Numbers record label too. There is a reason why he was voted in at number 2 on Resident Advisor’s Top 100 DJ poll (just behind Dixon), don’t miss out on experiencing that reason. Get the party started right here...

Âme (Live) Now don’t get confused, there are two members of Âme: the one who DJs (Kristian), and the one who plays live, Frank. We are getting Frank this time around, and we couldn’t be happier (nothing against Kristin of course, he blew our happy hormones supply when he played at Pitch this year). Coming in strong as a RA Top 5 Best Live act of 2016 recipient, Frank Weidemann is one of the world’s foremost exponents of live electronic music. Last seen in Melbourne in 2015 to play at the who-knew-it-would-fail Maitreya Festival, it has been a while since we’ve experienced

the Âme live arm in it’s full glory. Expect unreleased Innervision goodness, crystalline production and infectious melodies that will make you feel better about life.

Stephan Bodzin You know those moments on the dance floor when there is a rush of endorphins to your body which completely takes over and make you realise: “Yeah, it’s all good. Everything in this moment is perfect.’ Nah? Well, we don’t either, but if anyone can bring you to that stage then surely it will be 5-HTP master Stephen Bodzin. His melodies are designed to make you feel things in corners of your mind and body you didn’t knew existed. He can contort his way through his instruments like an acrobat, turning knobs and triggering effects like there is no tomorrow. There is a reason there is so much excitement around him, and you can believe the hype. Stephan Bodzin is arguably the biggest live electronic music act on the planet right now, and his set at Let Them Eat Cake might be the most anticipated of the whole festival.

INTERVIEW WITH THE LIBRARIAN AHEAD OF LET THEM EAT CAKE NYD the halftime movement happening today. Your schedule has been crazy busy with festivals lately, what’s been your favourite festival experience this year so far? It’s really difficult to choose, so I’ll give you my top 3! Playing the Do Lab stage at Coachella was really incredible. My set started off to an almost empty crowd and within 20 minutes it was packed to the brim and people were really receptive to hearing new sounds. It was truly an honour to be included in the line up.

You travel around the world and you own your own festival. On top of that you will be spending the whole of January in Australia, kick starting the new year at Melbourne’s Let Them eat Cake. Better know to bass heads as The Librarian, that is exactly the position Andrea Graham finds herself in. But there is nothing quiet about her music, and she can kickstart any party in emphatic style. As part of the huge Let Them Eat Cake NYD lineup alongside Jon Hopkins, Stephan Bodzin, Palms Trax. Jackmaster and more, we got to speak with the excitable Canadian ahead of her Australian visit… Hey Andrea thank you for taking a minute to chat with us today! Let’s just get this one out of the way straight off the bat… How did you get your name? Well the librarian started off as a nickname that Liz (my business partner in Bass Coast Festival) gave me. It caught on quickly amongst friends due to my uncanny resemblance to a Librarian. I also have a deep library of music, so the name stuck and I just couldn’t escape it!

Unsuspecting punters may be a bit surprised to hear The Librarian plays some badass bass music, how did you get the dubstep/bass genre? I’ve always been moved by bass frequencies. When dubstep first appeared in the early 2000’s it caught my attention right away. I’d never felt or heard anything like it. That early wave of European dubstep & grime really formed my taste in electronic music. I also really love footwork, jungle, and

Oregon Eclipse Gathering was really special because people from all around the world collaborated on the event. I was fortunate to play Thursday night to an incredibly fun crowd who had tons of energy and it set the stage for the rest of the weekend. And playing Bass Coast is always very special to me. As you may or may not know, I started the festival with Liz Thomson and my husband Andor who design and build the stage I play on. Needless to say it is very close to my heart and I am so appreciative to play for the community that has grown around Bass Coast. You’ve also been squeezing in a tonne of b2b sets, who would you love to play b2b with and where would you be playing? I love playing B2B because it keeps things spontaneous. Mat the Alien and I have been playing together for 9 years! We had a weekly residency in Whistler for over 6 years and now we have a radio show on Sub.fm, and we also tour playing festivals like Shambhala, Bass Coast, and many other clubs/venues B2B around North America. There are a number of other friends/artists who I’ve played with including Max Ulis, Michael Red, & Mandai.

We are all part of Lighta! Sound – a foundational crew in Vancouver, BC. I’ve also played B2B a few times with Danny Corn and PRSN out of Portland. We all share a love for similar sounds, so it was natural to jam together. It’s been a while since you released new music, have you got plans to write some more material? Yes actually I have been working on some collaborations with Danny Corn and we may put them out this year. Bass Coast and touring as a DJ has taken a lot of my time in the past 3-4 years so my production output has not been high. It’s a priority for me over this winter and I hope to have some new material soon. What have been three goto tracks for you this festival season? Oooh… ok, let me look. I love Sweat Equity by Greazus, Badmouth (Dem A Talk) by Egoless, and ALL of the dancehall tunes of Sam Binga’s new release with Rider Shafique. When you’re not blasting huge sound systems, what do you like getting up to in your time off? I love to mountain bike. It’s why I live in Squamish BC where the trails are really incredible. I love getting out in the rainforest and floating down the mountain on my bike. It’s my meditation and my place to live in the moment. It’s an incredible way to stay fit, push my boundaries, and to keep my brain happy. Keeping the festival vibe high, when you visit Australia you’ll be playing Let Them Eat Cake on New Years Day! What else have you got planned for your time in Australia? I’m really looking forward to spending a month in Australia. Kicking it off with Let them Eat

Cake and then closing it out with Rainbow Serpent. In between, I will be visiting friends and family, hopefully surfing a bit (although I’ve got a lot to learn) and exploring the music scenes in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and beyond. My mom is going to join me and she’s Australian and hasn’t been home in years so it will be fun to tour around with her. During your touring and travels, what are three things you’ve learnt on the road that only the road can teach you? 1. Talk to everyone and get to know the people in each place you go. I find making connections really enriches the experience and creates deeper memories. 2. Check out the local music / art scene. If I have time, I love going to see local crews play and / to check out local art shows. It’s a great way to learn what makes each city’s creative scene unique. 3. Get outside and explore the landscape & food of each town/city. I’m an adventurer at heart and really appreciate experiencing new places. Hotels are the same everywhere… but the mountains and beaches and ocean are really unique. 4. ...haha I know you said only 3… but PACK LIGHT! Finally, if you were going to throw a festival anywhere in the world, where would it be and who are the headliners? WELL…. I DO throw a festival in Canada called www.basscoast. ca But if resources were plentiful, my dream line up would include: Fever Ray, Dizzee Rascal, Thom York, Om Unit and FKA Twigs among many many others!

THANK YOUUUUU

Unlike other travel companies, we revolve wholeheartedly around music, festivals, and working with renowned artists and DJs from around the globe. Here’s a look at what we’ll be getting up to over 8 days in magical Iceland.

On arrival in Iceland, we will meet and greet in the late afternoon at our accommodation and get things rolling with a few welcome drinks, before our first night in the City of Reykjavik. With artisan vibes and a sense of individuality, Reykjavik will no doubt be one of the coolest cities you visit on your European Adventure. With eccentric bars situated throughout the Experience Iceland with Beats Travel - “Where Music & Collide” Reykjavik city, it is the perfect place for a Beats Travel bar crawl and surprise event, courtesy of our mates at Chase The Beat. Day 2 - After a heavy night out it’s time to wash away those hangovers by paying a visit to the famous Icelandic Geothermal Spas. Sit in a volcanically heated pool whilst appreciating the natural beauty of Iceland. There’s a reason this is the most visited attraction in Iceland. At night we’ll go for a traditional Icelandic dinner fit for the Vikings and head back in preparation for the next 2 days of adventure and exploring. Day 3 - It’s time to see why people fly in far and wide to check out this amazing country. We will be visiting the famous Golden Circle. It has been voted one of the best festivals in the world, and this is not only down to the festival itself, but the epic side parties they hold in the rugged terrain of Iceland. Mr Pikes: The Story Behind The Ibiza Legend The playboy who built himself a playground reveals all in his hard-hitting memoir. The iconic hotelier reflects on a fast life of hedonism and the globe-trotting backstory that influenced his set-up of pioneering Balearic boho bolthole, Pikes. Now at the grand old age of 83-years-young the man Boy George dubbed “the real Hugh Hefner” has decided to tell all… The globetrotting story of how Tony Pike reached Ibiza is as fascinating as the shameless shenanigans and scrapes he conjured up on the island. This is a man who built himself up from nothing...who travelled the world…and became the living embodiment of the phrase ‘work hard, play hard’. Who bought a 500-year-old Spanish farmhouse with no electricity, running water, sanitation… or rooms…and turned it into the best rock and roll hotel in the world. Tony looks back on the extreme highs and lows of an unparalleled life, goes exclusively behind the scenes of the Club Tropicana video shoot which put his unique hotel on the map and discusses his relationships with guests/friends including George Michael, Freddie Mercury, Julio Iglesias and lover Grace Jones. * ‘Mr Pikes: The Story Behind The Ibiza Legend – Tony Pike with Matt Trollope’ is published by MT Ink, and is available from all Amazon sites, in both paperback and Kindle eBook

Here’s our favourite quotes from the book * Life is a game of chance so it’s how you play your hand. Now they call it networking, back then it was plain old bullshitting.” * Later that evening, the day before the Club Tropicana shoot, the crew were sitting around drinking and George and I started talking again. He was such a good-looking cunt. I said to him that he must pull so many women. He told me he was gay. “What a fucking waste!” I exclaimed. George roared with laughter. He’d probably heard that one a few times before, although his sexuality was a closely-guarded secret at that stage of his career.

Top 5 Essentials for a Week of Partying in Croatia from Maddie from Beats Travel It’s no secret the Beats Travel crew love Croatia. This country has everything we love (sun, beach, techno, raving) rolled into one absolutely peaking summer season. We have spent our fair share of time on Zcre Beach, reveling at local institutions such as Papaya Club, and dancing on the beach til dawn. We head to these hallowed parts for our Island Beats tour as we hit up techno paradise Sonus Festival, so we like to consider ourselves some what of an authority on what your essentials are for a week partying in Croatia. 1. Sunglasses

the sheer number of people who

Now, this may seem obvious, but you would be amazed by

seem to forget. There is nothing worse than the Croatian sun

coming up at 5am, and having your dance floor sesh ruined by the sun blinding you. They also come in handy while lying on the beach dying of a hangover, and can definitely help shield your eyes if you are feeling antisocial and want some alone time.

2. Ear Plugs/Eye Mask Few have conquered a full week of partying in Croatia without at least a few hours shuteye. Dorm life, day sleeping, park benches, whatever your slumber scenario, sleeping becomes a whole lot easier with these two life savers. They will also help you to sleep on your bus/plane/train ride to your next destination.

3. Portable Phone Charger It didn’t happen if you don’t post it on social media, right? But in all seriousness, it’s easy to lose your mates, forget your hostel address, your name, the list goes on. Your phone is the key to these things. It’s also your key to savouring the memories of the best times of your life, and can help you keep in touch with the friends you find on the dance floor in the wee hours, Shazam a song, call your mum, check your bank balance.

4. Glitter If you are saying you don’t love glitter you are you even a real partier? Glitter is a sure fire way

to make new friends as they ask you to cover your face in it. Glitter is also a great way to turn your seemingly plain outfit into a fully fledged party suit. (Check out Glitoris Glit for inspiration like the guy above)

5. Swim Gear Whether it be a pair of funky shorts or a bikini that doubles as a fashion statement (ignore the tan lines), you must always be prepared for a last minute pool party. No Croatian party week is complete without it. Let’s face it with temperatures soaring it’s the ideal mid-week refuge to chillax, cool down and recharge for those last few days of raving.

INTERVIEW TIPS

How to land working holiday jobs Welcome to Down Under! You’re arriving at a good time, the weather is starting to warm up and the job market is still busy. As thousands of like-minded individuals arrive from around the world for a few years of good times, new friends and exciting experiences, pushing yourself ahead of the crowd to obtain a role that is well paid, interesting and challenging is super important.

Your resume/CV: • I nclude your Australian address and mobile number – if your address isn’t fixed yet, include the city you’re in e.g. Sydney or Brisbane, so recruiters know you have arrived • Highlight the type of visa you have and when it expires • Don’t include a photo, it’s not customary in Australia to include one and could mean you face unnecessary bias before you begin interviewing!

Applying for jobs: • M ake a note of whether the position is permanent, temporary, or a contract. As a working holiday visa candidate, you are restricted to six months with one employer – which means we can’t consider you for long term contracts and permanent positions. To save yourself time (and disappointment), apply to temporary positions only • Register yourself with one or two agencies and work exclusively with them. Showing dedication and reliability will ensure you get repeated calls from your recruiter

Interviewing: • I f you’re looking to work in a corporate office, ensure that you either bring corporate attire from home or buy some before you interview with a recruiter. Target, Kmart, and H&M all have corporate attire which won’t break the bank • Treat your interview with a recruiter as though you were interviewing with a hiring manager – put your best foot forward from the moment you walk into reception • Don’t arrive at a recruitment office unannounced. We often operate by appointment only and most agencies are specialised and may not be able to assist you. If you are looking to register on a general basis, head to the agency’s website and give us a call Put these tips into action and you’ll snag a new role really quickly. If you’ve finished reading this blog and want to see what temporary positions people2people are currently recruiting, head to www.people2people.com.au/ jobs/temporary/ today!

Match your Resume to the Job Description No two jobs should be applied for with an identical resume! Scrutinise the job advert, job description and company website. Identify the key words: skills, qualities and attributes, in addition to the requirements of the role. The more keywords that feature within your resume, the more likely it is that the recruiter or hiring manager will identify you as being a good fit for the role. And REMEMBER, if you’ve not worked in hospitality before, think about what skills sets relate to the job, such as ‘people skills’, ’organising’, ‘working in a team’, ‘corporate events’, etc.

Make sure you stand out, as you will be going up against people who have more relative experience - especially in Australia where hospitality is seen as more of a long term, life career. Define your Attributes Now you’ve identified the keywords you need to match these to your specific attributes and characteristics to demonstrate that you are perfect for the role. If it helps, draw up a list of your qualifications, awards, work experience and skills and identify where the keywords can fit among these. A Focused Application A well-rounded application should include your resume and a cover letter, both of which should be concise, easy to read and relevant to the role. When writing your cover letter start by explaining exactly why you are the perfect candidate. Follow this by summarising your key skills and expertise, demonstrating suitability by drawing upon real examples. Don’t be afraid to use bullets points or subheadings to draw attention to specific skills. This will focus the hirer’s attention on those all-important areas. Follow this simple tips and fingers crossed you’ll smash your application and receive an invitation to interview. The Little Things You’ll Notice When Moving to Australia As a potential expat in Australia, you may want to search the internet for an array of blogs and articles about what to expect when moving to Australia, and let us say this; most of them will be very useful. They’ll be about communities, jobs, families, cultural changes and the like. You know, the important stuff that will either make or break your adventure Down Under. But none of them note the ‘little things’. There’s an abundance of little things you should be aware of when moving to Australia and so we’ve assembled the top five here to help make the transition a smooth and relatively stress-free one. Okay they won’t shake up your world but it’s nice to know about them before you don your sunnies and slip on the thongs. 1. A ustralians aren’t as mad on bottled water as Brits. Water from the tap is clean and many Australian families keep a jug in their fridges. Okay so perhaps other countries are leading the world on environmental issues (for example, it seems bizarre solar power in Australia is only a recent development) but the decision to shirk the endless plastic bottle production is a great step forward. 2. T ipping is nowhere near as important in Australia as it is in the UK. In many restaurants, cafes and bars across the UK, waiting staff will try to bump up their tip by making conversation, regularly checking in and perhaps even offering up the odd compliment. Australian

patrons for the most part don’t want this nor expect it. They want to be served food and drink and left alone. Sometimes they will tip, sometimes they will not. It’s not mandatory. 3. T he heat does not automatically mean people in Australia convert their homes and offices into fridges. In the UK, we tend to complain about those severely oppressive days in summer when it feels like we can’t do anything. Okay we complain about weather generally, that’s our thing, but when we feel we can’t function in the humidity, we tend to whack the air conditioning right up. However don’t assume that’s what Australians do. They have a much

more laidback and sensible approach to the heat given they’ve had to deal with it all their lives. So expect nice cool environments rather than frosty receptions. 4. Y ou’ll notice insects and arachnids are bigger in Australia but nine times out of ten they are no more dangerous than the insignificant itsy-bitsy ones you used to gather up and flap out with a duster back in the UK. Sure there are more poisonous and deadly creepy-crawlies out there but the last time someone died from a spider bite in Australia was 1979. You’re more likely to die swerving out of the way to avoid a cute little quokka.

5. V egemite is everywhere and you will probably consume a thousand tubs in the first two weeks. Resistance is futile. Another way of making your transition a smooth one is to talk to Seven Seas Worldwide about affordable and convenient relocation. Finding Nursing Placements In Australia With Bower YNA Bower YNA is a nursing agency based in Bondi, Sydney that helps place registered nurses, general and specialist in work throughout New South Wales, and through partners at YNA, across wider Australia. We put some questions to Bower YNA, to offer an insight into their services and how the process of finding a placement through them works. Who can work as a nurse for Bower YNA in Sydney? Registered Nurses that can meet the Australian Nursing registration board (AHPRA) requirements and who possess more than 12 months’ post-grad clinical experience should have no trouble in finding work with our public and private hospital clients around Sydney. For others that have experience as care workers in aged care or hospital settings for a reasonable period of time and who meet NSW Health compliance requirements, there is seasonal work available as Assistants in Nursing (AIN’s) depending on the time of year, flexibility with availability and willingness to travel.

What are the main requirements I need to comply with? To work as a Registered Nurse you need to be registered with AHPRA, which can take months, so leave yourself plenty of time by planning ahead. We don’t recommend you travel until your registration has been processed and confirmed, unless you are able to support yourself financially if there’s a delay in the final notification being issued.

All nurses (Registered or AIN’s) need to provide documents proving a vaccination record and immunity to a range of specified diseases. As some vaccines have to be administered in courses over a period of time, reviewing your status early and not leaving it to the last minute could save you a lot of stress, inconvenience and possibly expensive delays. National police and working with children clearances are also needed, together with references and evidence that you’ve completed a number of online training and assessment requirements (relating to joining Bower YNA and ones from different hospitals).

What are the benefits if I do tick all the boxes to nurse in Australia? Apart from the weather?! British and Irish nurses are popular over here because of the standard of their training and experience, great work ethic and general out-going nature. You won’t suffer too much of a culture shock as our hospitals are run along much the same lines as those in the UK and Ireland.

Finding a Nursing Job In Australia

In Sydney, Bower YNA specialises in assisting nurses who are visiting on Working Holiday Visas and has developed a client base of the popular major and smaller hospitals to provide variety, most of which are close to public transport and therefore ideal for visitors. There are generally plenty of shifts available in different locations, many bookings coming in a week or so in advance (as well as the choice of taking daily assignments as your plans change). Pay rates are attractive and with the amount of free entertainment options available (sight-seeing, beaches, parks, etc) you can have a great time and yet still save plenty to meet your further travel plans. If you enjoy yourself as much as most, you have the option of leaving nursing for a short period to work towards getting a second year working holiday visa, and for Registered Nurses, you can apply to stay longer via sponsorship, which is often available from hospitals where you’ve already proved your suitability when working as an agency member. Although a small, boutiquestyle agency, Bower Healthcare’s recent partnership with YNA forming Bower YNA means that agency workers can secure work throughout wider Australia, thus enabling individuals to travel and work throughout most Australian states. For more in depth information on compliance requirements and registering for work in Sydney and further afield, visit our website on bowerhealthcare. com.au or email us at info@ bowerhealthcare.com.au

EXPAT INTERVIEW: TEACHER, ALY, MAKES THE MOVE FROM BATH TO SYDNEY

From rural Bath in the UK to the bright city life of Sydney, Australia, primary school teacher, Aly Miller, tells BBM readers about her move, motivations, job seeking, and gives advice to others looking to make the move! Tell us a little about yourself: I’m a 24-year-old Primary School Teacher from Bath, UK. I currently work as a casual Primary School Teacher across schools in Sydney and also tutor Special Needs Children. I am an Australian and British Citizen (Thanks Mum and Dad!). Tell us about your move to Australia: I came traveling to Australia back in June 2013 and fell in love with Sydney! My parents had lived there many years before and it instantly felt like home. I loved the vibe of Bondi and the beach life and decided that after finishing university and getting a couple of years teaching under my belt I’d pursue my dream of living aboard in Sydney. So I packed my bags and left my permanent teaching job to follow my dream a year ago! Tell us a bit about your work in Australia:

When I first got to Australia I had to wait for my teaching accreditation and I initially found it difficult finding work. However, thanks to Quay Recruitment, which was suggested to me by a friend, I succeeded in joining the team at TAFE NSW in student support. I then moved to a company who taught yoga and mindfulness in schools until this month. I have since moved back into casual teaching, as that’s where I’m happiest, as I love being around children! Tell us about how you have adapted to the social scene in Sydney: As I love to workout and keep fit, I found making friends really easy in Sydney and joined a variety of fitness clubs with free events. I would totally recommend the Girl Crew Sydney Facebook group if you’ve just arrived as there are lots of awesome girls who are in the same boat! Guys I’m sure there’s one out there for you too! My favourite place to go is Messina for ice cream and doughnut time as a sweet treat! It’s the dream! I also love the Beach Road Hotel and Soda Factory for a cheeky beverage. Tell us about the best bits of your adventures in Australia so far: My best moment here so far has been running the City2Surf. I never ran back

CRYSTAL BALLS Our resident psychic, Crystal, tells you your misfortune for this week Aries PEER pressure is something that helped you make all your decisions at school, but you’re not on the playground any more and need to stop allowing people around you to decide your destiny. If you want to study fine art at the library, don’t let anyone bully you into a 12-hour stint of binge drinking instead. Mummy’s catchphrase of “if Johnny jumped off a cliff would you follow him” is still relevant in 2008. Taurus IT HAS been the scourge of countless celebrities in recent years. Now you will suffer the embarrassment of a leaked sex tape. The damage done to the reputation of stars is usually not too great because they’re sleeping with equally attractive partners. However, when it’s revealed you’ve shagged someone three times your age on a stairlift before sniffing their incontinence pants, you’ll be lucky if you avoid living hell from your workmates. Gemini YOUR obsession with the beach is going to have to stop now the winter nights are drawing in. You claim you’re there to top up your tan and relax, but it’s clear to everyone you’re a pervert addicted to the sight of bare flesh. Your sunglasses may hide your eyes but they can’t disguise the direction of your head as you ogle yet another bronzed beauty. Or your erection.

home but this was such a fun event and it was awesome doing it with my friends! Well worth doing if you’re over here in August! And as for the best thing about living in Australia it’s the sun and the people! Everyone is so positive and happy and you can be outside pretty much all the time! Tell us about the hard parts of your move to Australia: For sure not having your family and home friends around you! I’m a really family girl and it has been hard living so far away with the time difference, however after being here a year I have now settled in. I also totally miss Marks and Spencer - like massively! They need to get themselves over here! Tell us about your travels in Australia and anything different you have tried: I’ve traveled to Melbourne, Brisbane and Gold Coast and I’m off to New Zealand in around 2 weeks! I’ve also tried vegemite and I love it! I did have a panic thinking I might be allergic, but it turns that my allergies are to coconut oil instead! Advice: A day in your new hometown Sydney, what should we not miss? Bondi and all the beaches! They are so breathtaking, and the Bondi to Coogee walk is one of my fave things to do!

Cancer IT’S ONE thing to look after your body with a healthy diet, but your devotion to the latest food fads is beyond a joke. Eating horse hair will not stop you losing yours, sipping salmon soup will not make you jump any higher and eating an apple a day will not keep the doctor away. Leo YOUR star aligns with Uranus this week. Funnily enough, you talk out of yours. Lying to people will not impress them, it will merely make them hate you. Stop trying to be someone you’re not. Look at it from the perspective of those obese stinkers with lazy eyes you try to chat up at 2am – if you really owned a mansion, sports car and yacht, why would you be talking to them? Virgo Time flies doesn’t it? You have been in Australia for almost 12 months, meaning you have to either face up to going home or slogging your guts out on a farm to stay another year. At least that extra 12 months would give you a chance to shag at least one girl during your time here. Libra LOOK, you’re pig ugly so get over it. You have pulled a fit bird because you are really a nice guy too. However don’t believe her stories about her parents being strict Catholics so not wanting to introduce you, she’s just embarrassed because you have a face that makes Thom Yorke look like George Clooney. Scorpio FOR fuck’s sake, you’re 25 not 45 so stop having ‘quiet nights in’.

Advice: Do you have any tips for people who are considering moving to Australia? It’s okay if it’s not what you think it will be! I had this idea of what would happen and it didn’t and I felt lost and didn’t know if I could stay here. Just keep calm and be a yes person! Say yes to everything you want to do and you will have a ball! Advice: Is there something you wish you had known before moving to Australia? What a capsicum was!? Joking but that would have helped! I wish I’d known about the differences between my qualifications in the UK were compared to Australia as they would have made my job-hunting easier! Quick Fire Quirky You Questions: Favourite Oz Animal/Critter: Koala Least Favourite Oz Animal/Critter: Cockroach Favourite Australian Food: Avocados! Favourite Australian Bevvy: Frosé (Frozen Rosé) from Bucket List Sunset or Sunrise: Both! They are insanely beautiful here! TimTams or Penguin: Sorry no to Penguin, TimTams all the way!

Stop being a fashion victim and think for yourself, surely cool isn’t copying fads but thinking for yourself? Capricorn YOU’RE never happy are you? Talk about the grass is always greener, you get what you want before deciding you didn’t want it at all. Girls, clothes, jobs whatever it is. You’re mental and need help that is beyond even my power. Aquarius YOU WERE very popular at school and like to revel in those days still. Unfortunately you left school some decades ago and the years haven’t been kind. It is with increasing desperation you try to convince yourself the geeks you bullied in school aren’t doing better than you, as they splash you with rainwater from their Porsches while you cycle to your supermarket nightshift. You try to convince yourself you’re rock and roll but drinking until you puke every weekend isn’t becoming of a man approaching 30. Pisces WONDERING why your favourite beer has started tasting suspiciously salty? It’s because your ‘mates’ take turns to piss in it when you leave for the toilet. The reason why? Your pathetic lies over pointless topics. Why would anyone believe that you met Colin Farrell in

Get out and enjoy yourself, binge drinking and casual sex isn’t as dignified in your 40s and you will regret not living your life.

Sagittarius YOU TRY to portray yourself as edgy and informed. Politically aware, well-dressed, in all the coolest clubs with all the coolest people and their ridiculous hair cuts.

Many turn to tour companies like Ocean Rafting to so that they can get the best that this place has to offer. Car Rental It may be the case that you currently own a car whilst in your stay in Australia, either way, whether travelling by a rented car or not, this is a fantastic way to get the feeling of being on an adventure. It is most common that people will travel with a few friends when renting a car which is a great way to make the most of the long journeys and all of the attractions that are on the way. Furthermore, when travelling with friends, the price of the rental can be split between you which will make the cost considerably cheaper per individual.

Coach services Coach services have always been a popular way to travel up and down the east coast of Australia and for good reason. Not only are the services like the Greyhound really well priced, there are added perks like being able to get off at any destination you want and then jumping back on a coach a few days later with the Hop on Hop off service. Also, this is a great way to make friends, connect with new travellers and perhaps find your new travelling team!

Why a Hop on Hop off Service is a Great Way to See The West Coast

There are many forms of travel of which can be utilised to see the best of Western Australia. Most travellers leave from either Perth or Broome, heading up or down the coast to see the best that the west coast has to offer. One way to travel which in particular is becoming increasingly popular because of the endless perks is the Hop on Hop off service with Integrity Coach Lines. Here are some reasons why we think the Hop on Hop off service is a great way to see the West Coast of Australia.

Freedom One of the greatest aspects to highlight with the Hop on Hop off service with

Integrity Coach Lines is the freedom of choice it offers you. Simply because once a ticket is booked you are then able to go wherever you want, whenever you want. So rather than planning around a trip before you get started, this service enables you to plan on the move, staying at any location for as long or shorter time as you may wish.

Budget The cost of a ticket is considerably cheaper than the other forms of travel, such as flights, which actually restrains you from the chance to see many attractions and of course travel by car, both of which are nowhere close to being as cost effective as the Hop on Hop Off service. As a result, you’ll have extra pennies to use with enjoying your time rather than endlessly paying for getting from A to B.

Friends Whether you are travelling as a lone wolf or as an adventuring pack, you will have the opportunity to meet many different individuals and will form incredible friendships with those who are also

travelling on the Hop on Hop Off service. Like a convoy of explorers who are all embarking on a great adventure, what could be better foundations to form new friendships and you can even coordinate your journey to continue to travel up the west coast with your newly found likeminded friends. Ultimately, all travellers want to find a way to make the most out of their pennies and create the maximum amount of great experiences with the way in which they travel. This is why so many travellers are now turning to Integrity Coach Lines Hop on Hop off service, to ensure the greatest Western Australia adventure.
