Best Pubs and restaurants in Australia
With Australia’s cities heading into a face of for the most liveable cities in the world, locals and visitors desires and expectations are soaring to new heights. Long gone are the days where pubs can settle for the norm, restaurants are constantly being challenged to re-invent themselves and a traditional pub which could once be found on every street corner is now so rare it’s now a trendy and welcomed break from the ‘experience’ eateries and watering holes. In this issue we start our exploration of some of Australia’s best pubs and restaurants that will inspire and entertain.
Best Restaurants and Bars in Sydney Nestled amidst its beautiful beaches and harbour, Sydney´s skyline offers visitors some spectacular views that not too many cities can boast about. And what best to compliment a scenic view than a scrumptious meal or a drink with friends. With plenty of pubs and restaurants in Sydney being added to the city´s hospitality scene one is spoilt for choice. However, we’ve rounded up four of the more popular local favourites that should be enough to whet your appetite.
Loluk Bistro – 4 A cosy French eatery located down Bourke Street, the bistro is a family enterprise run by brothers Loic and Luc. Drawing from family recipes that took shape in home kitchens in Provence, the LoLuk serves up some authentic regional cuisine. With that said diners can savour the Mediterranean flavour popularly associated with Provencal dishes at this restaurant in Sydney. The restaurant specializes in offering all the traditional favourites of the region. Among those the Nicoise Tart, served with caramelised onions, anchovies and black olives enclosed in a crumbly shell is a must try. Perhaps the most recognizable Provencal dish is the ratatouille, which is another dish to try. While this simple vegetarian dish has been the source of many a heated argument among French Chefs to its authentic version, Lolukś offering is colourful and fresh. As for drinks, the Loluk serves up cocktails and has a classic selection of wines ranging from France and beyond.
Sasaki Unlike other Restaurants in Sydney, the Sasaki might not inspire thoughts of culinary greatness amidst its rustic hole in the wall look. However, diners will be surprised that the little Japanese eatery packs a punch with its dishes. Head Chef and founder, Yu Sasaki is a firm believer of using the freshest produce and introducing diners to traditional dishes. The food at Sasaki offers a glimpse into the traditional homely cuisine from the coastal prefecture of Shimane on Honshu Island in Japan, once
home to the restaurant´s founder. Located in Sydney’s central business district, this little wonder can seat 25 diners at a time. However, if dining here is on your Things to do in Sydney list then it’s advisable to make reservations. While the restaurant prides itself on fresh produce, the menu keeps changing as the produce come into season. Inspired by the dishes made by his mother in their home kitchen, the dishes at Sasaki are simple but flavourful. From red miso soup to prawn ceviche all the staples of Japanese cuisine can be savoured. For diners with specific dietary requirements, the friendly waitstaff will be happy to suggest alternatives.
Molo at Manta For those looking to experience something new among the Pubs in Sydney, the eastern suburb of Woolloomooloo will not disappoint with Molo. This relatively new pop up wine bar is part of fine dining restaurant Manta. The simplicity of its setting beckons diners with its first impression of seating outdoors. Heating keeps guests cosy during the colder months, while the bar prides itself on keeping things simple. While ideally the Molo is a good place to hang out with friends for a small snack and some wine, the menu does offer dishes that are sizeable enough to be considered as a main course.
Sneaky Possum Whether you are looking to delve into the restaurants or pubs in Sydney, the Sneaky Possum will meet all expectations. This multi facet venue manages to evolves from a cafe, restaurant and bar throughout its daily operations. The dining area at the back of the restaurant hosts diners while offering a cosy atmosphere for a quiet hang out complete with vintage arcade games and pinball machines. The bar at this restaurant in Sydney overlooks a visible kitchen area where the head chef can be seen pulling out all the moves to make sure those dishes are spot on. In terms of cocktail recommendations the lemon myrtle margarita and the rum espresso martini are favourites among the night owls that drop in. The crispy pork belly is recommended for those who like a hearty meal.
Pubs in Melbourne
Pubs in Perth
The pub culture in Melbourne is so tightly interwoven into the city’s cultural fabric and hospitality scene that a visit to the city would not be complete without a tour. For visitors looking to delve into this city’s food and drink culture on a short time frame can seem like a daunting task. However, fear not as we’ve taken the guess work out of identifying the top four popular Pubs in Melbourne that stand out as being unique.
Whether it’s a hearty meal at the Pubs in Perth or a cool beer on a hot day with some live music, travellers to this part of Western Australia will not be disappointed. With such a vibrant pub scene travellers will certainly be spoilt for choice and this is where the following go-to-guide can be helpful. For those who are visiting Perth and are short on time these suggested watering holes will help to explore the city´s best hang outs.
1806
The Rosemount, North Perth
Decked out in the old world charm of the 1920s, replete with velvet chairs set amidst heavy wooden interiors is the 1806 pub. Here, shaking and stirring are the name of the game, with more than 50 cocktails on the menu for pub goers to experience. For travelers looking to immerse themselves in a somewhat vintage setting, the 1806 will not disappoint. Further, enhancing the experience is the view available to diners from the mezzanine level of the building , which not too many Pubs in Melbourne can boast about. What’s the best bit about 1806? The menu is divided by the years from the 1600s onwards offering visitors a significant and interesting bit of history interspersed with their offerings. Visitors will no doubt be delightfully surprised and their curiosity peaked at the lesser known facts behind their favourite cocktails.
Better known as ´Rosie´ in North Perth, this pub cum eatery is where diners can go to experience live music. Few Pubs in Perth offer walk in diners the chance to catch a glimpse of the next greatest singing sensation. Families with kids and dogs in tow are actively encourage at the Rosemount. The establishment serves up family friendly grub and promotions throughout the week from burgers to fish and chips and specialized meals for children. However, it is the music that draws diners to Rosie´s - from famous local bands to popular groups such as Tiny Little House, Spoon and the Panics have all graced the venue’s music room. It’s a homely atmosphere with retro pop-up sales taking place alongside more serious album launches and playful karaoke sessions. The Rosemount has something for every member of the family.
Arbory Bar and Eatery The story behind the Arbory Bar and Eatery is a fairly long one. In terms of specifics more than 150meters long to be precise, as it spreads itself along the length of Flinders Street Station’s 13th platform. For travelers who are yet to finalise their lists of Things-to-do in Melbourne then Arbory Bar should definitely be on it. What stands out from this establishment compared to other Pubs in Melbourne is the beautiful view across the Yarra that is afforded to diners. Open to customers for breakfast in the morning, operations continue till late in the night. The bar is equipped with a state of the art ice machine, there’s also a fancy system for beer and of course wine on tap. Recommendation for food includes the pub’s double cheese burger and the steak tartare.
Bar Americano Situated right at the end of Presgrave Place, Bar Americano might strike first time visitors as a hole in the wall kind of place. While its appearance might put one off, especially as it’s a tight squeeze to get in, its cocktails are almost legend. You know a bartender is serious about cocktails, when he wears a white lab coat and is seen concentrating intensely on the mixing. The cocktails served here could well be just about the best ever tasted in comparison to other Pubs in Melbourne. While Bar Americano may not be ideal to spend an evening as the space is limiting, it’s best for a quick sip or a wait in between meet ups.
Boilermaker House Down Lonsdale Street, the Boilermaker House is definitely a one of a kind venture that encourages the marrying of flavors, namely beer and whisky. For lovers of both beverages, such unique Pubs in Melbourne are almost a godsend. For those who are unfamiliar with the boilermaker concept, the drink is actually a beer cocktail where a shot of whisky is followed by a little more than a shot of beer. While it might not seem like the cocktail for the faint hearted, the Boilerhouse encourages visitors to nibble on complementary edibles before beginning to nip into their beer. The thinking is that when both beverages are consumed together they create new flavours on the palate.
Ocean Beach Hotel, Cottlesloe Another hidden gem among the Pubs in Perth is the Ocean Beach Hotel, located across the Cottlesloe Beach front. Fancy breakfast overlooking the beach from the hotel’s own rooftop, or a few pints on a hot day at the sports bar ? The hotel offers varied options whether it be for dinning or a quiet gathering of friends for drinks. Travellers who frequent the Ocean Beach are known to hang on for the legendary Sunday sessions at the hotel´s beer garden on the rooftop. In the evenings watching the sun go down from the rooftop and enjoying a cold drink, what could be better?
The local hotel, South Fremantle Exuding a vintage charm about it, the Local Hotel located in South Fremantle is a stylish way to enjoy the local spirits. A visit to this hotel has definitely got to be one of the things -to-do in Perth. The menu at the Local Hotel is diverse enough to offer meals for any time of day and even the fussiest of eaters will find dishes that suit their taste buds. Among the restaurants in Perth, the one at the local hotel also offers a public bar. In addition, the hotel offers more space for gatherings and socializing at its whisky bar or casual dining venue. A once drive-through bottle shop has now been converted into the Local Garage - a garden bar which serves breakfast over the weekends. Accommodation in the form of boutique rooms, decorated by local designers offer a modern yet cozy lodging.
The Norfolk, Fremantle If diners believe that beer and gardens go together then the gardens at the Norfolk in Fremantle are a must. Unlike usual indoor pubs in Perth the outdoors at the Norfolk with its open air seating offering sunny and shady spots can be a welcome break from the norm. The menu includes popular favourites like pastas, pizza, steaks and more. The limestone walled courtyard of this historic venue has been the hub of social gatherings since the 1800s. Its central location makes it a halfway point to many attractions and its almost customary among locals that evenings should end with a drink or bite at the Norfolk.

CRYSTAL BALLS
You finally take the plunge and get on stage for an open-mic night at your local comedy club. It’s a brave move. Capricorns are known for their stability, maturity, calmness and ability to work on computers. Unfortunately, they’re not known for their sense of humour. Your act goes down so badly that you are physically assaulted midway through the gig by several irate members of the audience following a particularly bad “knock knock” joke. Leave the gags to Leo next time. That guy/gal cracks us up!
Taurus Your rampant egomania reaches new heights this month when you try to have sex with your own reflection in the TV. You’ve sunk so low you don’t even bother wiping the sex-juice off for several days. The sight of it dripping down the screen during an especially poor episode of 7th Heaven is a very disturbing image.
Scorpio It’s true what they say – gambling is a mug’s game. Your run of back luck continues at Randwick Races this month. Not only do you lose $200 on the
horses, you’re also mauled by a grizzly bear on the way home. Ironically, you would have got brilliant odds on that happening.
Pisces Sorry Pisces, I could do your horoscope but I need a massive dump. Crystal’s bowels take precedence dear.
Gemini Think of any number below 10. Double it, add six to it, then divide the result by two. Then take away the number your originally thought of. Using my amazing powers, I guess that the number you now have is… three. Ta-dah! Now if that doesn’t prove I’ve got the power to see the future I don’t know what does. Think about that the next time you tell your mate “that old slapper in BBM doesn’t know what she’s talking about”. Cynical prick.
Leo You’ve noticed your partner has been a bit cold and distant lately. You’re right to be suspicious. Two weeks ago she was kidnapped by aliens and replaced with an android whose mission is to spy on humanity. If you don’t believe us, there’s a way to test her. The android’s inner-wiring

doesn’t react well with water, so next time she’s asleep/recharging, fill a bucket full of water and chuck it over her. If she reacts badly, perhaps yelling a few obscenities, then she’s clearly an android. I’ll give you more information on how to deal with the alien menace in next week’s Crystal Balls. Until then, keep watching the skies!
Sagittarius Expect a call from Cricket Australia this month. They’re so short of decent batsmen they’re literally calling everyone in the country to give them a trial.
Aries Aries rhymes with fairies. You do the math!
Libra I’d keep an eye on Leo if I were you. Crazy son of a bitch thinks his girlfriend’s an alien. Looks like his schizophrenia’s back. He was doing so well too.
Virgo After a particularly heavy night on the sauce, you and a friend decide to break into Taronga Zoo. One thing leads to another and, before you know it, you’ve tranquilised and kidnapped a grizzly bear. You convince a taxi driver it’s just a friend in
a bear costume who’s dead drunk, but halfway home the beast wakes up and you kick it out of the car somewhere around Randwick. Thankfully you manage to get the ringtailed lemur hidden in your pants all the way home.
Aquarius “I’m never gonna dance again, guilty feet have got no rhythm.” So crooned George Michael on Wham! hit ‘Careless Whisper’. How prophetic those words are for you this month, when your girlfriend finds out you shagged her best friend and runs you over in her car leaving you paralysed from the waist down.
Cancer What? James Gandolfini’s dead? When did this happen? I didn’t see that coming. Sorry Cancer, no horoscope for you this month, I’m in mourning for one of the most sensitive lovers I ever had. Oh no wait, that’s not him – that’s the guy from The Sopranos. Who am I thinking of then? Oh that’s right, it was Ray Winstone – which would explain why he kept yelling “who’s the facking daddy!” when he shagged me up the wrong ‘un. Such a tender lover.
Crystal is always here (except when she’s being a cougar about town, showing the young women of today how to grind up against the guys) to help answer your problems. Our agony aunt-come-psychic knows best when it comes to problems…
Dear Crystal,
I’ve just stabbed my husband 47 times with a carving knife after he tried to order me around one too many times. Whether it was telling me to stop overreacting or ordering me to put the carving knife away before someone got hurt, that old idiot used to nag, nag, nag me all day long. The upshot is it’s left me in a bit of trouble in terms of disposing of the body. Then I remembered a court case in the ‘70s when a certain young Sydney socialite called Crystal Balls was accused of murdering her millionaire husband, but they never found the body and therefore couldn’t prove a thing. How did you do it? Yours Margaret
Dear Margaret,
Well I’m shocked that those scandalous rumours and lies are still hounding me all these decades later when I was cleared in a court of law on all charges (apart from the one about arranging an illegal monkey knife fight – how was I to know you needed a permit?) I loved my husband dearly and his vicious and bloody disappearance (not murder, definitely not murder) still wounds me to this day. But – hypothetically speaking if I had to ditch the body of a 63-yearold Wall Street stockbroker whose snoring used to drive me into a murderous rage, then it doesn’t do any harm to perform sexual favours
on the nightwatchman at Taronga Zoo in exchange for access to the lion cage. You can fill in the blanks yourself. Then you’re free to spend your beloved husband’s millions on creating a free magazine called BBM so you can insult people who like horoscopes. It’s the perfect crime.
Dear Crystal, I suspect my foul uncle Claudius of poisoning my father the king in order to steal his crown and take his wife as his own. But what plotteth can I conceive to unravel his scheme and bring judgment on his head. I must have justice dear crone, I must know if he be capable of such foulness. Tell me, what must I do to have mine vengeance? No deed is too black to slake mine thirst for his bloody reckoning. Yours, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.
Dear Hamlet, Did you just call me a crone? You cheeky git. So you’re saying you think your uncle knocked off your dad so he could become king of Denmark and shag your mum? But you’re not sure so you’re asking me for help to find proof. That’s a tough old pickle you’re in there. Tell you what; I reckon it’d be a good idea to stage a play in your uncle’s honour that replicates the exact events of which this Claudius bloke is accused. Keep an eye on him, and if he flinches or looks shocked, you know he’s guilty. Now that’s an awesome plot – what could possibly go wrong?

MUSIC NEWS & GIGS: INDIE MELBOURNE’S FOOL CHILD REVEAL PLAYFUL NEW SINGLE ‘DANCE ON YOUR OWN’
SYDNEY MUSICIAN AND PRODUCER BEN PANUCCI EMBARKS ON A SOLO ENDEAVOUR WITH NEW SINGLE ‘COME OVER’ Sought after Sydney based guitarist and producer Ben Panucci is no stranger to the Australian music landscape, with releases in both the contemporary jazz and neo-soul worlds. Now taking centre stage as a solo artist, Ben Panucci is embarking on a new creative endeavour with his debut single ‘Come Over’ due for release independently Friday 20 April and is excited to announce some upcoming full band shows in Sydney and Melbourne.
UK expats Scott Harrison and Matthew Green aka Fool Child have been blending the ethereal soundscapes of indie-folk with the light-hearted clutter of surfrock together since they met travelling back in 2016. Originally a duo, Fool Child honed their sound busking, but with their sights set on reaching wider audiences and with growing intrigue, they added Hannah Jackson and Callum Fitzpatrick rounding out the four-piece. The Melbourne based band are now excited to reveal their new single ‘Dance On Your Own’ set to be released on Friday 20 April, as well as announce a single launch show on Wednesday 16 May the Gasometer Hotel (Upstairs). Newfangled single ‘Dance On Your Own’ was recorded and mixed by John Castle (Angie McMahon, Jack River, Cub Sport), and showcases Fool Child’s dreamy tones playful lyrics, and newly expanded fuller and upbeat sounds, but still with their trademark folky element at the root. Think: Angus Stone vocals splattered on a Foalsinspired backdrop. Matthew Green’s emotionally honest lyrics soar into each chorus, supported by perfectly layered backing vocals from Scott Harrison with jangly guitars adding the feeling that summer’s never going to end. ‘Dance On Your Own’ is a song about change and the inevitable transitions we all have to go through as travellers. “It’s funny; some of the most meaningful relationships we’ve all been through have
The first taste from his forthcoming selfproduced album, Ben enlisted longtime friends and collaborators Brain Campeau, Andrew Bruce, and Nicholas Meredith to help bring his most personal project to date; Age of Consequence to fruition. Recorded at Turning Studios and Pooch Sounds Studios in Sydney, then handed over to Kevin Kerr to add the finishing touches on mixing duties. ‘Come Over’ is both whimsical and uplifting in its production as it is in its lyrical content. With an absolute hook of a synth bass line unfolding over lush synths and languid guitar, Ben’s vocals talk about the excitement of meeting a lover and the positive effects that this can entail. The song is as dreamy as it is cheeky with the chorus’ lyrics a rebuttal to the phrase ‘The pleasure is all mine’ – one that lacks inclusiveness, something that has no place in the world. Here, we get the message that in this scenario, it is important for the pleasure to be shared.
Join the established musician and performer as Ben bares his soul through his highly personal lyrics and captivating live presence at intimate headline shows in both Melbourne and Sydney over the coming months.

happened on the road, and therefore often had to end prematurely due to circumstance or whatever. It was one of those fleeting romances that inspired the song, but I think for all of us it’s come to represent embracing the change that people can trigger in you.” – Fool Child Expect a not-so-serious entertaining live performance, but prepare to be captivated by Fool Child’s catchy indie-folk melodies when they launch ‘Dance On Your Own’ at The Gasometer Upstairs.

Courtney Barnett shares ‘City Looks Pretty’
AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND TOUR DATES
Today Courtney Barnett shares ‘City Looks Pretty’, the third single from her highly anticipated album Tell Me How You Really Feel.
Fri 17th Aug - Thebarton Theatre, Adelaide
Following on from the focussed fury of ‘Nameless, Faceless’ and the gorgeously contemplative ‘Need a Little Time’, the new single takes Barnett in an entirely different direction. ‘City Looks Pretty’ has Barnett experimenting with new song structures while delivering one of her most exhilarating guitar performances to
date. It’s metronomic drive and squealing lead guitar provide the remarkable sonic foundation from which Barnett sings a melodic exploration of friendship, place and home – “friends treat you like a stranger”, Barnett sings, “And strangers treat you like their best friend”. A Record Store Day release of ‘City Looks
Pretty’ will be available on April 21st, with the 12” double A side also featuring the beautiful ‘Sunday Roast’, also taken from the forthcoming record. To celebrate the release of Tell Me How You Really Feel, Barnett today also announces her biggest Australian tour to date, taking in shows at The Sydney Opera House and Melbourne’s Festival Hall amongst others. LOVEBIRDS The first Lovebirds release appeared on Trax of Interest in 2000. Back then it was only a side project for releasing deeper stuff than what he was doing under his main project. In 2006, having built up a repertoire of unsigned material, he sent a CD to John Buckby, label owner of Winding Road Records and a mutual friend of Vincenzo. The Lovebirds sound is like a blast from the past with house steroids packing serious production muscle. Listening to Lovebirds is like taking trip back to the 70s and 80s - but riding in a gleaming futuristic spaceship. The first Lovebirds single on Winding Road was the “Modern Stalking” EP, which came out in 2007. The EP contained tracks of mid-tempo house, each coming from a different musical angle and giving the world a taste of what he was capable of. It was received by the deep house and neo-disco community with open arms. Top-flight DJ’s such as Prins Thomas, Ashley Beedle and Jimpster went wild for it. Bill Brewster made the EP the “Single Of The Month” in iDJ magazine. Since then he was responsible for a huge number of club hits including deep house masterpieces like “M.U.S.I.C.” (on Vincenzos and his very own imprint TEARDROP), the modern deep house classic “In The Shadows” (on Winding Road) or dancefloor bomb “The Rat” (on Freerange) peaking in the modern deep house masterpiece “Want You In My Soul”. More than 4.000.000 views on You Tube, best selling single on traxsource.com in 2011. …this track was and actually still is everywhere. A few years on, Sebastian had achieved all he wanted to with Kneedeep, and was ready to move into more deeper, melancholy musical avenues. And so Lovebirds was born, which is now his main project. His production experience means that he is able to finish wellrounded tracks off in a matter of days, constantly building a repertoire of classy dance floor and mellow sounds all destined to wow the world. The process is well on its way already. Having releases on labels like Freerange, Defected and Lazy Days and most of all his own Teardrop Recordings, working with artists like Ben Westbeech, Lisa Shaw and most recently 90s UK acid jazz icon Galliano and playing worldwide gigs every weekend – Lovebirds combination of grown-up house music with a touch of funk, soul and disco is welcome change in these times of sterile formula artists. Currently he is working on a follow up EP with his partner Stee Downes and a whole underground pop/electronica/indie album under the name of Minako & The Lovebirds. Both due to be released in 2016. These two collaborations will also be available as a combined Lovebirds Collective live show from Summer 2016 on!
Tour Dates Saturday 5th May: Claptone Masquerade Ball, Melbourne
THICK AS THIEVES PRESENT - CLAPTONE Claptone is a name we all know too well. Hiding his true identity while awing the masses, the masked enigma has been dominating the dance world for half a decade - and his force only continues to grow stronger. The list of industry leaders Claptone has worked with is nothing short of incredible, remixing stars such as the Gorillaz, New Order and Gregory Porter, Pet Shop Boys, Rüfüs and more. His music has penetrated the industry’s main artery and spread into every possible venue that it can. More recently Claptone announced the his upcoming album ‘Fantast’, and since the announcement two tracks from the album have been released: ‘In the Night ft. Ben Duffy’ and ‘Stay the Night ft. Tender’. After selling out his Melbourne Masquerade Ball in record time last November, Claptone returns to Australia to take the specialty event across the continent. Adding to the tour, the five shows will be complemented with one of Australia’s leading music festivals, Groovin The Moo. In a now long forgotten world, many generations ago, a bird like shape emerged from wooded darkness, oating and uttering, drifting and dreaming. Backlit by a bright glow of iridescent light, the undecipherable form wore a dazzling golden mask. Its long beak swooped down like an inverted horn and since then, people have referred to the mythical being simply as Claptone. Years spending wandering medieval landscapes have informed Claptone’s view of the world, experiencing both magical mystery and muted melancholy he enchanted onlookers with occult instruments and beguiling sounds. Forever surrounded by a sense of intrigue, the world soon cottoned on to the elusive yet enchanting musical powers of this otherworldly beast. The results are that today his shamanistic sonic powers take him all around the world. Yet despite the best e orts of the hungry masses, the mysterious Claptone still remains a mythical, little known gure who slips in and out of the shadows, leaving in his wake lasting musical experiences. Since hatching in 2012, he has continued to send people into a frenzy with his DJ sets, which are underpinned
modern world of likes and photos is no mean feat, especially considering he plays more than 260 shows around the world each year. He does so as the centrepiece of his own immersive and otherworldly The Masquerade Events everywhere from Amnesia Ibiza to Webster Hall in NYC, and also with his Immortal Live shows at places like Melt! Festival, Coachella and SW4 as well as at Listen Out in Australia. In 2017, the mystical form and enchanting sonic conjurer takes the unique experience that is one of his Masquerade events to Paris, Miami and Venice, as well as his own stage at Tomorrowland. Yet because of his strong shamanistic powers, he leaves people spell bound and lost in music, rather than concerned about who or what it is they see before them. To keep his followers at bay, Claptone appeases them with musical trails, such as his weekly podcast, which is broadcast on more than 70 radio stations and has been downloaded more than ve million times. He also allows them into a little corner of his ephemeral world by o ering up his own t-shirts and masks, and continues to confound them with musical offerings. These include The Masquerade mixed by Claptone - a double CD release which was Mixmag’s album of the month - and soon will include his next o cial mix CD for Tomorrowland’s Daybreak Sessions, due in 2017, while his unique remixes of diverse international stars like Gorillaz, New Order and Gregory Porter, Pet Shop Boys and Faithless, Bastille and Metronomy continue to excite. In order to soak in the music, emotions and colours of the world -- as well as remaining a tirelessly and innovative creative force - Claptone stays anonymous and hides in unknown places and spaces. In turn, he then gives back by forging strong hedonistic vibes with his crowds and shows them a way to their own emotions. He empowers them, gives them hope and new energy, and will continue to do so well into the next life.

FRENCHMAN BAMBOUNOU RETURNS TO AUS FOR A NATIONAL TOUR A key player within the European dance scene, Frenchman Bambounou initially gained his fame through his numerous releases on the esteemed (but now defunct) 50Weapons record label. Not releasing any new music since his 2015 EP with Margaret Dygas ‘See You Soon / Popular Religions’, his intricate and experimental DJ sets have been the driving force behind his growing popularity... but that’s all about to change. Bambounou recently announced he had been spending plenty of time in the studio, stating “I’ve been working hard on my sound these past few years. I’m really stoked to announce that my next EP ‘Parametr Perkusja’ will be released on Don’t DJ’s DISK on May 25th”, he also linked the b-side of the EP, a jungle infused weapon ‘VVVVV’. Returning to Australia for seven dates, this is easily his biggest Australian tour to date. Jeremy Guindo AKA Bambounou, is one of only two Frenchmen to have worked with the legendary, but now defunct Berlin-based label 50 Weapons (run by Modeselektor). The producer of over 7 EPs and 2 albums (2012’s ‘Orbiting’ and 2015’s ‘Centrum’, both on 50 Weapons), Bambounou rapidly announced himself as one of the major acts in the French, and European, house and techno scenes. His
productions, widely inspired by the sounds emanating from Chicago, Detroit and London, have found favour with the globe’s more discerning selectors. In March 2014, he released a remix EP of his latest cuts (‘Ignition/Take It Out On Me’) featuring new versions from French Fries (Paris-based ClekClekBoom label’s bossman) and Laurent Garnier (the other Frenchman that used to be involved with 50 Weapons). He has also collaborated with French Fries on Jimmy Edgar’s Ultramajic to produce the hotter than hot ‘What’s Up Evan’. With upcoming gigs at events like HYTE in Ibiza, and festivals including France’s Nuits Sonoros, Bambounou is set to take his stock even further this year. Novel Present - Bambounou

THE CRIBS HEADLINE THE GUM BALL Bringing a touch of Brit-rock swagger to The Gum Ball this year will be indie legends The Cribs, who will be here for the first time in 5 years to play one of the headline spots at the festival. They’re surely set to bring Friday nights line-up to an epic crescendo. Hello lads, thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us, where are we speaking to you from today? Ross: Wakefield, West Yorkshire. So it’s been thirteen years since your debut self-titled album came out, what is your secret to still going strong, when so many great bands from that decade are no longer recording? I think with our band, things have been different to many other bands who started around the same time. Firstly we came from an underground DIY scene back in 2002, which predates a lot of bands that had commercial success in the mid to late 2000s. We would see a lot of bands spring up all of a sudden who would be considered our peers, but in reality were just bands who signed straight to major labels trying to create music that was in vogue. Your last album ’24/7 Rock Star Shit’ came out in August last year, has your album making process changed much over the years, or do you still use the same techniques that have proved so successful over the years? We still go through the same processes making an album, although as the band live in different parts of the world now (Portland, New York and Wakefield), more ideas are
now brought into the practice room instead. 24/7 was an intentionally different process though. We wanted to take an accelerated approach on every level, including recording/writingand releasing. This enabled us to not get too bogged down with a lot of the laborious processes when releasing an album. Our position as a band allowed us to take make a bold move like this, and we still achieved a UK top 10 record How did the UK tour for the last record go? Do you still have the same love for touring as you did in the early days? The last UK tour was great. In more recent years we tended to just visit all the big cities on tour, but on this one we made a decision to go to cities we haven’t played for some time. I think in some places where they don’t get as many touring bands through, the audiences can be better to play to. You are bringing the tour to Australia in April, are you excited to be playing your songs to the crowd down under? Yes absolutely! Having Aus in the diary is always a highlight for us. It’s the first time you’ve toured Australia in five years, do you have any places you want to revisit, or old friends to see why you are over there? Last time we were in Perth we caught up with Mal from the Sleepy Jackson. We went to their studio and hung out drinking all night listening to music. We have many happy memories with them guys,as our first ever tour was with the Sleepys. Hopefully we can all catch up again. We invented a new snack whilst on tour last time in Aus, called Tommy Bread. We find an outdoor BBQ, dip bread in Tomato sauce and cook it on the BBQ. Try it one time- suitable for vegetarians!
Which member of the band enjoys being on the road the most and which one of you guys struggle the most with the constant travelling? I think we all enjoy being on the road, as playing live is a big part of this band. I recently had a baby girl who is now 2 months old though, so this tour will be the first time ive left her, and that’s gonna be tough! In your song ‘I’ve Tried Everything’ you open with “I was born in the Merrie City, I’ve been trying to get out of it”, do you any of you still live in your beloved Wakefield, or did any of you, in fact, get out of it? I still live here! Wakefield has changed a lot in the past 10 years, and we some how feel we played a part in that. They even gave us a plaque in the city centre for recognition. Wakefield now has its own music festival, and has a brand new art museum. Speaking of that song, you recently played the ten-year anniversary of the album ‘Mens Needs, Womens Needs, Whatever’ which ‘I’ve Tried Everything’ featured on. How was it playing all them songs from start to finish again? I know a lot of fans were very pleased to see it happen. It was fun playing songs we wouldn’t usually play. Also, not having to think about the setlisteverynight was a big plus point! Lee Ranaldo flew in for the last show at Leeds Arena too, which was the first time we got to play Be Safe with him in the UK which was a special moment. I was actually at your Kentish Town Forum show on that tour and you mentioned to the crowd, albeit tongue in cheek, that you do actually have other records both before and after that album. Do you
really feel the other albums don’t get enough attention? We don’t feel the other albums get over looked. Weve often done shows similar for the other records too. We just enjoy revisiting certain chapters of the band, as we are nostalgic people! Where was the last place you all went on holiday to? We all had a day off together in Shanghai last time we visited China, does that count? What country that you have visited would you say has had the best food? I would say Japan. We all love Japanese food. Whenever we arrive in Japan or after a show we will go out for food that evening really jetlagged and drink Sake. Jetlag/ Sake/Japanese Food/Humidity in a Japanese restaurant is the place to be. What is the name of your favourite pub? Inns of Court Thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us! Best of luck on the next stretch of your tour in Australia, and beyond. Interview by Paraic Walker The Gum Ball returns for the 13th time from Friday, April 27 to Sunday, April 29, 2018 at Dashville, a private property at Belford, in the Hunter Valley NSW (Australia). www.dashville.com.au
INTERVIEW: TORS Matt and Theo; two brothers that make up two thirds of Tors, started out their musical careers writing tracks featuring in critically acclaimed Channel 4 Drama - Skins. Alongside Tors, Matt writes music for multiple big-time Japanese and Korean pop bands, and has also written chart hits in Italy and Poland. In addition, he’s written a song that is currently being supported by Radio 1 – ‘Better’ by Declan J Donovan. Additionally, Tors have made a massive impact with the likes of BBC introducing, 6Music and Radio X and with streams amounting totally over 2million so far, they’re ready to make waves with the release of their new single ‘Won’t Remember’, recorded naturally in their Dad’s old shed in Devon. Hey Tors – welcome to BBM. What’s the most exciting thing that’s happened to you so far this year? Thanks for having us BBM, we love what you’ve done with the place, we might never leave. We’ve had a pretty excellent year so far releasing new music and booking in festivals but playing live is our home away
from home - so we’d have to say performing with Billy Lockett to a sold out crowd at London’s Union Chapel. It’s such a stunning venue and the audience were incredible, it was also our first gig of the year which is always nice. We’ve also recently heard that Ainsley Harriott is a big fan of Tors, which rivals pretty much any life event in terms of excitement. You’re booked to play a number of festivals across the UK this Summer, which is your favourite city in the UK and why? That’s a very tricky one! Our favourite place we are playing this year would diplomatically have to be Brighton since its our place of birth, it also happens to be one of the most fun places to spend any amount of time. Great pubs, weird shops, nice beach (loses some points for being pebble) and an exemplary pier experience - 5 stars. How does everyday life in Devon differ to somewhere like London? The pace is generally a lot slower there, if you’re late in Devon it’s usually because you got stuck behind a tractor or there was a cow in the road. The pubs are also the best in the country, though you’d better not ask for anything fancy like mixer...or a straw. The stand out thing for us though is the countryside, such a huge part of our songwriting comes from the environment we write in, when you’re surrounded by incredible views and total silence you can’t help but be inspired. However, London is also very close to our hearts, we spent 4 very hazy years living in Clapham and they were some of the best we’ve had yet. What home comfort do you miss the most when you are away from Devon? Again probably the views and the ale, which makes us sound like a bunch of alcoholic ramblers, and in a sense we are.
How did the project Tors materialise? Matt and I (Theo, everyone’s favourite) were living in London both trying our hand at writing in some sense, Matt was songwriting for other artists and I was scriptwriting. We’d always been musical but very separately then one day we decided to sit and write something together and it immediately felt right. We then found Jack (our drummer) in a lay by selling strawberries and pulled him out of the rat race and we’ve never looked back. You write in your Dad’s shed, do you feel this influences your music at all, if so how? Haha reading this question its hard not to imagine a poky garden shed with a lawnmower and us huddled in a corner singing. The shed itself is actually quite large, our Dad uses it to paint in so one thing we are surrounded by is art, which is always conducive to being creative, and also paint thinner, which might well be influencing us on a chemical level we’re unaware of. It’s just nice to have an “office” as it were where we can create with no time constraint or pressure. It all feels very natural. When was the last time you had a proper holiday and where did you go? I don’t think we’ve had a proper holiday for a long time outside of playing festivals and touring. Although we have become experts at a summer BBQ, we are all about that marinade life. We’re also trying to get into surfing, wisely or not, it’s a great way to let of steam while also trying desperately not to drown. Who would be your dream collab? In terms of current artists we’d love to work with a band like Flyte, their album is incredible and their harmonies are out of control. It would be very interesting to see how our writing styles would mix.
Name a record you couldn’t live without? Nick Drake - Way To Blue, we grew up with this album being played on a nearly nightly basis, there are a lot of wonderful memories attached to it, plus his songwriting was next to none. Questions to ask when booking an Uluru tour
Ask any traveller the one thing they definitely do not want to miss while travelling through the Outback, and Uluru is likely to be their answer. With literally hundreds of tours on offer to this breath taking marvel, trying to decide which one will be best for you can be a daunting task. But bear in mind the following factors and you’ll be well on your way to making the best choice possible. How much time will I have? You may be swinging through with just half a day to spare, or be exploring at a more leisurely pace. There are tours to suit both so choose one that allows you
to spend as much time as possible at Uluru. The rock and surrounding area are massive - you will need longer than you think.
to quad tours and even camel rides! Check to see if your tour offers these excursions- they can all offer a great, alternative way of seeing the site.
Sleep under the stars or under a roof?
How will we get around?
Though most tours offer the camping option, there are also hotels and lodges if you’re after some home comforts. Make sure that wherever you sleep, you’re as close as possible to Uluru itself for that all important sunrise. That magical light isn’t around for long.
Will my tour guide be culturally sensitive? Uluru is far more than just a spectacular natural wonder, it is deeply significant to local Aboriginal people and an important part of Aboriginal cultural identity. Make sure the tour you choose is led by a knowledgeable and respectful guide, who can teach you more about what Uluru represents to Aboriginal people.
Can I book any extra activities? There are plenty of extra activities on offer around Uluru from scenic flights
Travelling through the Red Centre means a lot of hours on the road, so make sure the tour vehicle used is large and comfortable enough to accommodate your group and their gear. 4WD vehicles are smaller but high off the ground meaning great views, while mini coaches are larger but lower so what you gain in leg room, you might lose in view.
What’s for dinner? Veggie? Vegan? Gluten allergy? If you have any dietary requirements you’ll want to make sure your tour can cater for you and make sure you don’t go hungry while everyone else is tucking into camel burgers at dinner. Most tour companies can accommodate requests but it’s always best to check. Check out our Rock to Rock tour and take in the mighty Uluru – along with the Olgas and Kings Canyon! www.mulgasadventures.com.au/toursand-packages/rock-to-rock-tour

WILD SWIMMING ON FRASER ISLAND
When it’s hot, frolic in K’gari’s (aka Fraser Island’s) freshwater lakes and creeks! When it’s hot, frolic in K’gari’s (aka Fraser Island’s) freshwater lakes and creeks!
With the heat of the summer sun, K’gari’s rainforest (that grows out of sand, don’t you know?) gets incredibly humid with sometimes-extreme temperatures. Luckily, the island is blessed with natural lakes and pools that provide relief from the heat. With more than 100 freshwater lakes dotted around the island, there’s every chance you’ll find one that can accommodate your refreshment needs. 40 of these lakes are
perched – the water doesn’t come from streams or flow into the ocean, but it is, in fact, rainwater. The most famous of these lakes is Lake McKenzie. A sparkling azure jewel surrounded by trees, Lake McKenzie is about 150 hectares and five metres deep. Swimming in it is like swimming in a very large manmade pool, only cleaner. The water is so clean that the use of sun lotion and soap isn’t advised, as they act as pollutants. While crystal clear, the acidity in Lake McKenzie means no animals can survive in it – it’s perfectly safe to go swimming in, though. And the lovely, soft,
white silica sand is also a great natural exfoliator. Another of K’gari’s perched lakes is Lake Wabby. At 11.4 metres, it’s the deepest on the island, and has much lower acidity levels than Lake McKenzie, making it home to catfish, rainbow fish and honey blue-eye. Make sure to enjoy it while you can – in around 100 years, it may be no more due to the bordering sand dune blowing into the lake and eventually anticipated to swallow it whole! For nature lovers, Lake Allom is the lake for you. While it’s not as pretty as Lake
McKenzie nor as mysterious as Lake Wabby, it does have one trick up its sleeve – turtles. Hundreds or adorable freshwater turtles live in the waters of Lake Allom. While feeding them isn’t allowed, you can clap to gain their attention and watch them pop their tiny little heads out of the water. Discover K’gari’s lakes and more with Drop Bear Adventures. Providing 2 and 3 day camping and beach house tours, you can 4-wheel-drive to many of the beautiful spots on Fraser Island. Book your tour now at www.dropbearadventures.com.au
An Insider’s Guide To Ocean Rafting in the Whitsundays
The Whitsundays is on every travellers bucket list, with the eye bursting beauty in every direction you look and the kind of activities which will give you memories for a lifetime, it’s hard to see why it wouldn’t. Many turn to tour companies like Ocean Rafting to ensure they get the best out of their Whitsundays experience. Our travel editor caught up with their team to find out about why this part of Australia remains to be on every travellers bucket list and we got the inside tips on the phenomenon known as Ocean Rafting. What do you believe are the highlights of experiences when travellers come to you guys? The tours are built so that travellers get to see one attraction after the other, what really strikes those who join us on our tours is the
way in which they see these attractions. Nothing can prepare you for the stunning scenery whilst sun gazing on our charter boats, it all adds to an unbelievable effect. Why do travellers recommend others to
do this tour? Travellers usually recommend our tours because of the overall experience; they get to see attraction such as Whitehaven Beach and a few hours later will get to snorkel in secret locations. Meals and accommodation aren’t included in the Ocean Rafting tour, but an optional tropical buffet lunch is available for guests to enjoy on the beach. Is there anything travellers should pack? You should always come prepared for the sun, sunblock, a peaked hat, glasses and also a water container. We have many water based activities so travellers should bring their swimwear and definitely bring a camera. What is the difference between the Northern Exposure tour and the Southern Lights tour?
The main difference between the two tours is that the Northern Exposure tour has more snorkelling time and the Southern Lights tour offers more beach time. We also offer a Double Deal for both cruises allowing you to experience more adventure for less! Both offer the ultimate in Hill Inlet tour. Are there amazing friendships that are formed on your tours? Friendships are always made on our tours, with so many individuals from so many different places in the world, there is plenty to talk about and learn from one another. Top 5 Wineries in South Australia
There are so many superb vineyards in South Australia trying to decide which to visit will leave you needing a large glass of wine. This region is so highly rated that Adelaide has been voted among the top nine great wine capitals of the world, putting it alongside the likes of the mighty Napa Valley in California. In fact, you could argue that Adelaide is the Southern Hemisphere’s answer to Bordeaux – and that’s no mean feat. With the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills all within spitting distance of the CBD, kind of, where do you start? These five gems are all highly rated and are guaranteed to leave a sweet taste in your mouth.
The d'Arenberg winery in McLaren Vale is one of the best in the area and a short hop from Adelaide. Its tagline is its dedication to “the art of being different”, and d'Arenberg is set in a stunningly restored 19th century homestead looking over the Willunga Hills and across the Gulf of St Vincent. The onsite d'Arry's Verandah restaurant serves up tasty Australian meals to pair with their beautiful wines. Choose from various wine themed activities including making your own wine blend at the Blending Bench. Choose from a selection of wine parcels and blend them to your own taste. Or simply kick back in the newly opened d'Arenberg Cube, a 5 storey wine centre resembling a Rubik's Cube housing bars, a restaurant and tasting rooms. The views from the top are beautiful. Another place to get your tastebuds tickled is Penfolds Magill Estate, a legendary brand in Australian wine. Dating back to 1844 this beautiful winery takes you back in time and hides a series of secret underground tunnels and cellars. Should all that wine tasting get your stomach rumbling the onsite restaurant will be happy to feed you excellent Australian fare. Guests can choose from a variety of experiences, with the best being the Penfolds Iconic Experience - visit the Grange Cottage and cellar, and head out on underground drives followed by tastings of the wineries best wines and a three course lunch. The Lane Vineyard set in the Adelaide Hills is a newbie producing small batch wines born from state of the art technology. 'The Lane' has a beautiful setting and an
excellent restaurant on site offering tasty Australian meals. The Lane's Gathering Indulgence wine flight takes place on a hill top overlooking the estate, where guests enjoy seven premium wine tastings paired with tasty chef prepared food. With 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside to match, your wine supping view doesn't get much better. The Barossa's best known, and best loved winery, Jacob's Creek has been synonymous with Australian wine for a number of years. It all started way back in 1847 and the wine was named after the creek that runs through the Barossa Ranges. These days it is one of the top stops on any South Australia wine tour. There is an excellent visitor centre and an award winning restaurant offers up tasty meals. If you prefer to head out into the sun, sign up for a Jacob's Creek Gourmet Picnic and sip your wine under one of the red river gum trees on site. Last but not least and another Barossa Valley gem is Seppeltsfield, an iconic winery famous for producing wines every year from 1878. The sprawling estate covers a huge 420 acres, with gardens and stunning heritage listed buildings and its crowning glory, the vineyard. There are four tasting pods and a VIP mezzanine lounge to relax in, as well as an award winning restaurant on site serving excellent food. The Taste Your Birth Year experience is just that, you get to try the vintage from the year you were born in the Centennial Cellar. A unique and fun birthday gift.

We go behind the scenes of Sonus with festival Aftermovie Director
We caught up with Sonus Aftermovie Director Thomas Pizzinga to discuss how the festival has developed, some of the best Croatia must visit destinations, his favourite things to do around Pag Island and of course why he loves the festival. He’s also got some pretty amazing photos and memories to share. Here’s what he has to say about Croatia’s no.1 underground tech festival. What’s your name and what do you for Sonus? Hi guys, I’m Thomas Pizzinga and I’m the director of the SONUS aftermovie since 2015. How many years have you been visiting Croatia? I have been in Croatia many times since 2013, I explored lots of different beaches and cities. You have had the chance to return to Sonus and Croatia as the festival grown over the years, is there a destination or activity that you consistently return to year on year? I love to explore Pag island, I had the opportunity to drive around from north to south and east to west to film new landscapes and activities. So yes, I’d say my favorite activity is exploring the island with a van, with a scooter or with a quad. Do you have a favourite beach? Of course, but it’s a secret beach we discovered last year during our location scouting. I could bring you there if you
come to SONUS. ehehe What’s your favourite restaurant and where is it? Unfortunately, we have a tight working schedule and we can’t drive around to try different restaurant but we had dinner in a fish restaurant in Simuni and it was really good. We imagine that you get access to some pretty amazing artists and shows at Sonus. What are your top 3 stand out DJ or Live sets that you’ve seen since you started working with the festival? (can you provide these) Choose just 3 dj/live sets in a selection of about 60 artists is not so easy but I’m a big fan of Sven Vath and his set in 2015 at Aquarius was absolutely amazing, I really enjoyed the Martinez Brothers boat party and the Solomun closing set in 2017. What are your top 3 most instagramable destinations or activities in Croatia? One of the most instagramable activity is sailing on a boat around the festival beach while you’re dancing with your friends, then
take a picture with your girlfriend on top of Pag Island View and of course Dance till the dawn in Kalypso club, waiting the sun coming up in the middle of the trees. What’s your favorite Sonus moment that you’ve ever taken and why is it your favorite? (can you give some details on the memories it gives you/destination/ location/artists/etc) Film a festival like SONUS gave me lots of new friends and unforgettable moments. One of my favorite moments that I filmed there it’s the Carl Cox set of 2017, he was playing the sunset set at Aquarius, that day the sky was incredibly orange and red, the club was sold out, there was an incredible atmosphere all around and I really enjoyed filming those moments. Why should people add Sonus to their world festival bucket lists? The right question it’d be, Why people didn’t buy the SONUS ticket yet? SONUS Festival is a complete experience, you could listen to more than 60 artists in 5 days, the best underground artists I mean! You can party all day and all night with people from all over the world. There are boat parties and after parties! SONUS is special because PAG island is so beautiful, you can drive around with your friends and discover a new wild beach every day, you can rent a sailboat and looking for dolphins around the island. There are many activities around Zrech Beach, you can rent a quad and looking for some fun off-road.
There are also lots of beautiful villa with pool to rent or if you prefer to go wilder there are some nice camping. Do you like to dive? Pag is famous for snorkeling and diving too :) Did I convince you yet? What’s your instragram handle? Where can we find you online? We’re working on the new website so at the moment it’s offline, you can find our media production company on Facebook here: www.facebook.com/infoelephantstudio on Vimeo: vimeo.com/elephantstudio and instagram: www.instagram.com/elephant_ studio while this is my personal account: www.instagram.com/thomas_pizzinga Thanks so much Thomas, we look forward to seeing at Sonus 2018.
SONUS Festival 2018 Sonus Festival set for legendary 6th edition with Amelie Lens, Charlotte de Witte, Jackmaster, Nicolas Lutz, Peggy Gou, Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos, Ryan Elliott, Seth Troxler, Solomun, Sven Väth and 34 more!

Holy Moulay Make a pilgrimage to the holy town of Moulay Idriss
There is a special kind of sound that comes from an excitable donkey. A high pitched, frantic honk which, when made with enough force and effort, can echo off mountains. This I discovered is the morning call in Moulay Idriss, the ‘peaceful’ mountain town in northern Morocco I’d escaped to for some much needed peace and quiet. I had driven out of Fez the previous day, both delighted and exhausted by the ancient imperial city, and my first glimpse of the small, white washed buildings of Moulay Idriss had appeared on the horizon like a mirage of calmness, a two hour drive and a world away from the frenetic city streets I’d been exploring for days. Perched precariously on a steep mountain side at the foot of the Atlas Mountains surrounded by olive groves, Moulay Idriss holds a special place in the hearts of the Moroccan people. And deservedly so. It was here that the town’s namesake, Moulay Idriss I, settled way back in AD789 introducing Islam to Morocco and beginning one of the greatest family dynasties in the country’s history. The great, great, great grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, Moulay Idriss is considered one of the founders of modern Morocco, and the town he called home is held so sacred that up to 2005, non-muslim visitors were not allowed to stay overnight. Edith Wharton visited here back in 1919 while writing her famous travel memoir, In Morocco, and accurately noted how the town was “resentful of Christian intrusion”. Luckily those days are long gone. Moulay Idriss today is rural Morocco at it’s most charming. Gloriously lacking in pushy tour guides and tourist shops, Moulay is very much an authentic working town. Wandering through the narrow, steep streets, regularly stepping aside to let a heavily laden donkey pass, I could just feel the history. Edith Wharton described how “the silence and emptiness of the place began to strike us”, and I could see her point. Variously painted bright blue and green, the solid, ancient walls lock in the silence, hiding behind them ancient riads with sunny courtyards and rooms warmed by wood fires. Tiny bakeries hidden in impossibly small gaps filled the air with the scent of freshly baked bread. As I climbed higher I passed elderly men and women dressed in long hooded Berber cloaks, children playing football in tiny spaces and donkeys tied up waiting for their owners.
Two young boys eagerly ask if I want to visit the ‘petit terrace’. I agreed and was hurried down more and more alleyways, up endless stairs until I arrived at a stunning view of the town and surrounding mountains, looking down at the great mausoleum of Moulay Idriss, with its roof of emerald green and gold. It was so blissfully quiet up there I could just hear the low rumble of televisions from open windows, and the distant whine of hungry stray cats. Climbing back down to the main square, I soon discovered that this is where the action is. A bustling place encircled by strip lit cafes populated by groups of men playing cards and exchanging gossip, I ordered a sweet mint tea and watched it all, quickly realising how integral donkeys are to the whole economy of the town. They are the sole mover of things – from food and people, to gas canisters and furniture – if you want to get anything from one place to another, you will need a donkey, and everyone seemed to own one. I had breakfasted that morning with Rose, owner of Dar Zerhoune, the delightful bed and breakfast housed in a traditional Moroccan home I’d booked for my stay. One of the few ex pats to buy property in the town, Rose is a champion of the local donkey population. Paying for regular veterinary care and berating anyone she sees mistreating the animals, she said this was her way of giving back to Moulay. Without the donkeys, the town would grind to a halt, so keeping them going in turn keeps the town ticking over. The next day I headed out early, climbing up past the impossibly pretty hill top cemetery and out onto the near deserted highway. I was headed for the ruined
Roman town of Volubilis, Moulay’s closest neighbour and the biggest draw to the area. A UNESCO World Heritage site dating back to the third century B.C. and covering an area of nearly two miles, Volubilis is a living testament to the Roman occupation northern Morocco. Once a thriving, prosperous city of 20,000 residents, it’s position at the very edge of the Roman empire meant it was always vulnerable to attack by the powerful Berber tribes of the area, and it eventually fell to them around AD270. It remained the capital of the area for centuries, well after Moulay Idriss and the arabs arrived in AD708, though he used much of the ancient Roman stone to build his new town up the road. An earthquake in the mid 18th century flattened much of what remained but today it’s still a fascinating place to visit. The Basilica and huge ‘Arch of Triumph’ are the best preserved structures, along with the colourful mosaics built into the floors of the grander homes in the east of the city. Looking down the valley from its position on a high ridge, I could see why the Romans chose to build here, surrounded by fertile land and in the shadow of a mountain range
it was perfectly placed to fend off the tribes and provide wealth and prosperity to its residents. I hiked back through olive groves and fields as the sun began to fall. The calls to prayer from the myriad mosques of Moulay drifted down the valley, calling me back to the tranquility of this most peaceful Moroccan town. Barely touched by modernity yet so close to the thriving cities of Fez and Meknes, Moulay Idriss should be on everyone’s Moroccan itinerary. You’ll be glad you came. Where to stay: Dar Zerhoune – a cosy 5 room guesthouse with a huge roof terrace and excellent food. From 40 Euros per night. www.darzerhoune.com What to do: Visit the Roman city of Volubilis or take a dip in the local Roman baths fed by hot springs. How to get there: an easy 2 hour drive from Fez, or arrive in a Grand Taxi from nearby Meknes in around 30 minutes. By Kate Moxhay

Travel Europe on a Budget
Travelling around Europe can be expensive, even with recent trends in the currency exchange. There are so many different countries in Europe – which means so many wonderful towns and cities to visit. Although this makes it a traveller’s paradise, it can also make it quite expensive, especially if you’re trying to travel Europe on the cheap. Saying that, there are a few things that make it favourable for people to travel Europe at the moment. The Euro has fallen in the past few years, making it a great time to exchange your money. Another great thing about Europe is that thanks to the EU, most countries share their economy so you won’t find too much discrepancy between the countries. There are also so many different travel options – from buses to trains to flights. So much choice means you are bound to find a great deal if you’re planning on backpacking around this great continent. Read on for some insider tips on how to save money without compromising your travels.
Public Transport - Buses • Megabus. When in the UK, Megabus is a great way to travel. Although you have to book your tickets at least a month in advance to benefit from these deals. A lot of fares are as low as £1, which is a huge saving! Even for those looking to go further on these buses, fares are rarely higher than £20 meaning you can travel for less. While we’re on the subject of Megabus, they have recently added routes from
London to Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris. Fares start at £10 making this a great option to get from the UK to the mainland. • Busabout. This famous hop on/hop off service is especially popular with backpackers in Europe. You can buy tickets which let you travel their whole route, with set stops along the way. Or you can buy a pass which allows you to get off and on wherever you want. However, there is a downside to Busabout which is the stops aren’t always right in the city centres. This means that you’ll have to make your own way into these cities. But still, the savings are so huge it’s worth this. • Flixbus. German based company has routes between 20 European countries, making it one of the greatest options for backpackers or those travelling Europe on a budget. They do short haul trips but also longer haul routes which often go through the night, giving you a place to lay your head too. Flixbus also do routes which aren’t really served by Euroline or trains, which means you might get to see some things that you wouldn’t have otherwise.
Planes • Budget Airlines. This is by far and away the cheapest way to travel Europe, as long as you don’t mind planes! The reason that these airlines are so cheap is because so many people use them. That way many of the fares you can find are just the tax – nothing else!
amount you’re saving each time you use the pass. Trains are also a great way to see Europe, because it allows you to take in the spectacular views while sitting back and relaxing as you make your way to your destination. Another great thing about travelling by train is that you can choose to travel via night trains then you are going to save money on accommodation too. You can lie back and get some shut eye, all while travelling. Two birds with one stone?!
There are many different companies which offer amazingly cheap flights. EasyJet, Ryanair, Transavia and Vueling are probably the best companies for cheap flights. To scoop up these savings we recommend booking at least a month in advance. And keep an eye on their sites to see when they have sales on.
Car
Remember when using these airlines that they are very strict on things like baggage allowance. So read the fine print to avoid getting caught up in their penalty fees, and you’ll be fine. Another thing to remember is that if you’re expecting luxury – think again. There’s a reason these airlines are cheap, and it’s often because comfort is sacrificed to make way for practicality. It won’t be horrible, but don’t get used to leg room! But hey, that’s the ideal way to backpack Europe!
This is a great way to see Europe through the eyes of local people, meet some really cool and interesting people and practice your language skills! It will save you money in the long run and is hugely popular throughout all of Europe, so you’re always bound to find someone going your way.
Trains • Eurorail pass. If you are going to travel across long distances, then this pass is worth it. Getting ordinary tickets is fine if you’re travelling short distances. It’s when you start getting night trains that the cost starts to go up. This is where getting a pass will really help. Although they may seem like a lot of money upfront, think about the
• BlaBlaCar. Is a great option for those who don’t mind getting some real face time with the locals. This service allows people to jump in with people going to and from work, or on their own travels.
Ultimately, the cheapest way to get around in Europe is hitchhiking. However, there are a few risks around this, which are fairly obvious. Make sure to use your head and stay alert and you’ll be fine. If you don’t feel comfortable – get out. It’s important to trust your instincts. Saying that, you can also meet some great people and have some amazing experiences hitchhiking so it’s up to you! Stay safe and happy travels!

Questions To Ask When Starting a New Teaching Role January brings the start of a new school year for Australian students and you’ve taken the leap and decided to teach down under… great choice! The amazing weather, people and lifestyle makes Oz a highly attractive relocation destination. However, going into a new school in another country can be daunting, regardless of whether you’re an experienced teacher with several years under their belt or just starting out. Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of the top 5 questions to ask when you enter a new school, ensuring you you feel less out of your comfort zone and more able to do your job with ease. What is the behavioural system? This will differ between schools, but is important to know so you are aware of how to respond if a student misbehaves. Whilst some schools favour a traffic lights system, which aims to reinforce positive ‘green light’ behaviour, others may use ‘bronze, silver and gold’ rankings – learn which one your school uses to help maintain good behaviour in the classroom.
What is the marking policy? Like the behavioural system, this will vary between schools. Some will use colour coding, some stickers, and some may require you to outline the positives and potential areas for improvement for a piece of work. Find out how this system works early on so you can master giving helpful feedback. Also find out how the school likes to track students progress, and whether this will be part of your role or another member of staff.
What are the daytime routines? Ask when break and lunchtime are so you’re not left with an empty classroom halfway through
a lesson. Also check the end of school routines, as this is important for safety – do the children stay in the classroom to be picked up, or should you take them to the playground?
What is the assessment structure for teachers? Ofsted doesn’t operate in Australia, nor is there an equivalent, but there are still procedures in place to ensure teachers are doing their jobs. There are non-government bodies, some of which are nonprofit, which assess the quality of schools based on different factors.
Are there afterschool clubs and groups for teachers to run? Extra-curricular activities are a great way to get involved in school life, particularly when first starting out and wanting to make a good impression. If you have any particular skills, ask if you can offer your services to teach or help out in an after-school club – you may see the rewards in the classroom too. Everything You Need To Know About Superannuation Lodged within the Australian Superannuation system is a savings account that you would not have had otherwise. From your very first pay check, the Australian Government have been collecting Super payments and slowly, but surely, you have unknowingly been saving your pennies on the side. The professionals from Backpay.com has told us everything we need to know, which is likely why so many travellers turn to their services to get back all the dollar bills they have been saving. Everything you need to know Ok. Declaring itself as super is a tad outlandish as superannuation is basically a pension arrangement. Yup. That’s not even barely stirring is it, let alone super. However, in Australia this is governmentsupported which also means that minimum provisions are enforced for employees, which is kinda nice. From July 1st 2013 employers were required by law to contribute a minimum of 9.25% of an employee’s ordinary time earning into a superannuation fund, which is called a ‘Superannuation Guarantee’. The detail that is really super is that this is an additional payment borne by your employer; it is not deducted from your gross pay. There are also plans to increase the proportion to 12% by 2019, which is nice.
The payment is based on your pre-tax earnings so if you earned $500 before tax for the month you should be entitled to an additional $46.25. However, do not be alarmed if your superannuation balance looks a little skinny as 15% is taxed by the Australian Tax Office (ATO) and funds constantly charge administration and insurance fees which can amount to $5-10 per week. To be eligible the employee must be over 18, working over 30 hours a week and earning over $450 per month from one employer, so it would be beneficial to hold a single job instead of several. As far as assurances go the Australian Government have that covered too as from 1st January 2014 employers were obligated to pay default contributions to an authorised MySuper product, with the most well known
being AustralianSuper and AustSafe Super. This means that losing your payment due to a suspect provider is now far less a risk. That all sounds grand and all for Australian citizens yet for short-term visitors such as those on Working Holiday Visas the reality is a little different. Of course, if you meet the criteria then you can expect the contribution. Remember, as long as you earn over $450 a month from one employer you will be entitled. The arrangement is for any worker; whether permanent or casual, resident or non-resident for tax purposes (that would be you by the way). Arranging your superannuation is relatively straightforward. You can set up your own super account, which is the simpler choice if you intend of taking on temporary work or travelling while in Australia. You could also ask the bank to set up your super when you open an account with them or you can join the super account set up by the employer. If you do opt for the company’s super account and lose the paperwork do not fret, simply contact the ATO and they can help locate your super. For anyone being paid in cash it may seem great to have your wages in your hands to hold and then spend but you will be missing out on superannuation. You read that correctly. For all those lovely, crisp banknotes in your pocket you will be losing out on FREE MONEY. Working holiday makers are allowed to withdraw their superannuation either when their visa expires or whenever they leave permanently. This is known as the Departing Australia Superannuation Payment or DASP. A point to note is that you must have left Australia before this can be paid; the application includes checking that any
temporary visa has been cancelled by the Department of Immigration. Indeed, The Australian government must get really irked with these departures as they then take out a further 35% when you apply for the withdrawal. Bit harsh. Another point to note is that you are much better off claiming it sooner rather than later. In fact, if you do not claim your super within six months of leaving Australia, or within six months of the cancellation or expiry of your visa, the ATO will claim the money and it could be a while to organise its release from their tight grasp, especially from abroad. Still, the money is yours but if you are having trouble working out how to claim it then do not worry. If you have already claimed your taxback then the same company, and even the very same tax professional, should be able to assist you in claiming your superannuation. All you need to do is provide your membership details, fill in some forms and the tax professionals will do the hard work while you wait for the payment to arrive. Most charge a flat fee of around 15% for the service and you should receive your super within 28 days of the Australian Tax Office receiving your application. Superannuation may not exactly be super but it is free money that you should be entitled to when working in Australia. Setting up your account is simple and claiming it back once your visa has expired is not that hard either. Just do not forget about it, it is free money after all.
