AUSTRALIA DAY
Also known as ‘Straya Day’, due to the Australian affliction to shorten all words, takes place on 26th January, and is a public holiday that commemorates the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales, and raising of the Flag of Great Britain at that site by Governor Arthur Phillip. A day filled with wholesome family activities and celebrations of Australian culture for natives, we’d prefer to show you how you can take full advantage of the awesome parties that will be taking place across the long weekend! After all, your New Year’s resolutions should be firmly out the window by the 26th!
Havaianas 2015 Australia Day Thong Challenge

So don’t start thinking that you need to wear your sexiest underwear on your feet and climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This year you can register to take part in the 10th Annual Havaiana Challenge, and have a chance to be part of a world record attempt for the largest number of giant inflatable Havaianas out on the ocean. This iconic event brings 1000s of people together to have fun, and get into the Aussie way of life. www.havaianasthongchallenge.com.au

FESTIVALS
Taking over the Victorian College of the Arts across five stages, music performances come courtesy of hip-hop, disco, electronic and punk – to call it a mixed bag would be an understatement. Representing New York hip-hop, rap legend, Nas, will be the headliner of the day, performing the very best from his long career. Renowned for his ‘Illmatic’ debut dating back an incredible 20 years, Nas will be treating ticket-holders to ‘NY State Of Mind’, ‘Life’s A Bitch’ and ‘Represent’. Also coming all the way from the US are ODESZA, an electronic duo that will grip the crowd with their drumbeats and pop-infused tracks. Only forming in 2012, Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight have already released two albums, the critically acclaimed ‘Summer’s Gone’ and recently-released ‘In Return’, both of which manage to hypnotise the listener from start to finish. Meanwhile, fabulous foursome, Horse Meat Disco, will be taking the glitter ball and hanging it well and truly over Sugar Mountain. The DJ collective, famous for their residencies in London and “queer party for everyone” concept, will be playing their favourite disco tunes that you can find on their 10
www.bbmlive.com
own compilations including 2014’s ‘Horse Meat Disco IV’. You can also see live performances from Body/ Head (Kim Gordon + Bill Nace), Soul Clap, SWANS, Ariel Pink, The 2 Bears, Iceage, Dan Deacon and many more. So, what of the artists? From album covers and abstract paintings to light and sound installations, artists from all over the world are coming to Melbourne to show you their creations. Leif Podhajsky has a portfolio rich with album covers that he has created for Foals, Tame Impala and The Horrors, as well as work for brands including Nike, Sony and Vice. If you like multi-mediums, LA-based Abby Portner has a history in painting, filmmaking, animating, designing and drawing. You can also discover the works of Ash Keating, Robin Fox, Hisham Bharoocha and Ghostpatrol. Featuring a collaboration with Boiler Room TV, the main stage will host the headliners on Dodds Street, the car park will be turned into an outdoor music sanctuary, the Cave will allow artists to express themselves, and food and drink will be supplied by all your favourite Melbourne bars and restaurants. If Sugar Mountain sounds like something you can’t afford to miss – and let’s face it, who could? – tickets are available right now from $130pp + booking fee and are available from sugarmountainfestival.com.
By Charlotte Mellor
A festival where music, art and new media combine, Sugar Mountain returns to Melbourne on 24th January with an exciting line-up that will get your creative senses tingling.
Ones To Watch At
Sugar Mountain
With just one day to take it all in, we don’t blame you if you can’t decide whom to see on the Sugar Mountain line-up. Let us help you…
Oscar Key Sung
Oscar Key Sung is the Melbournian with the modern R&B voice, intricate production and model good looks. Known for his collaboration with fellow producer, Andras Fox, he has brought out solo material including the emotive ‘It’s Coming’. A must-see on any stage, he will also be supporting UK soul collective Jungle on their Australian tour at the end of January/ beginning of February.
Banoffee
Smooth yet layered vocals, textured production and a champion of new wave R&B, Banoffee is the female Oscar Key Sung. The solo project of Melbourne’s Martha Brown, Banoffee contains heavy synths and a deep, echoing bass with topics of soured love and inner strength and turmoil. Recognised by streaming service Spotify as one to watch in 2015, she knows her style and sound, and is completely owning them.
Chela
Electro-pop starlet, Chela, has come far from her punk days playing bass. With one of the strongest identities in the industry, she’s a glowing example of evolution, producing music that’s ‘80s Madonna meets Haim. Influenced by the likes of The Jackson 5, The Pointer Sisters and Hall & Oates, Chela has worked with Ben Ely, Goldroom and Clubfeet, and performed at SXSW. Expect to hear a lot of ‘Handful Of Gold’ on 24th January.
NOISE IN MY HEAD
Something altogether different but perfect for Sugar Mountain is NOISE IN MY HEAD. Its inception was a radio show hosted by Michael Kucyk on Melbourne’s 3RRR back in December 2005, and has now branched out to London’s NTS network. Playing mixes from guest artists, producers and DJs of both unknown and renowned status, Kucyk could play absolutely anything from anyone for a sensual and out-of-this-world experience.
Twerps
Self-described as Janky Pop, Twerps are the foursome from Melbourne releasing charming, festival tracks like ‘Coast To Coast’ and ‘Through The Day’ – think 1970s Glastonbury. They have cemented their pop-folk sound with their 2011 self-titled debut album, 2014’s ‘Underlay’ EP and soon-to-be-released second album. Stints at SXSW and a US tour have honed their performances for quite the experience at Sugar.

Horizon Festival Europe’s Biggest Ski Party
Co-Founder of Horizon Festival, Zane Rambaran takes us through just what you can expect at Europe’s best ski party in 2015! From an initial idea in 2012 of flying out a handful of DJs to play in a Bulgarian ski resort, Horizon Festival has fast become a mecca for dance led snow enthusiasts with the event showcasing over 80 international underground DJs. What’s so brilliant about Horizon is the resort itself, Bansko, and just how cheap everything is. There are no hidden prices in the fees and it only costs $3.80 for a pint, or you can eat out like a King for as little as $30! Forget your usual Christmas card alpine setting, Bansko is a unique and edgy ski town that provides Horizon Festival with an amazing playground to create 30 awesome parties. One of my favourites is the Secret Hotel, an abandoned hotel set in a mountain forest clearing. We pretty much just turn up, strap a sound system to the
foundations and flick the power on at 2pm each day, creating a warehouse party vibe minus the walls! Bansko’s diverse range of clubs and venues provide us with intimate to vast sound arenas and we utilise all of them throughout the week, mixing up the venues each night. Then there’s the Gardenia Hotel with its double level medieval banquet hall – needless to say this is turned into a Horizon venue for the week creating a pop-up that’s become a firm favourite with our DJs. The atmosphere really builds in Bansko across the arrival weekend as the town fills with boarders, skiers and partygoers. Pre-festival warm up parties commence Friday night, and by Sunday the daytime mountainside stages are in full throttle, followed by three or four late night parties around the Ski Centre. The Horizon team will be working overtime to get everyone fully orientated, including welcome drink bar shunts acquainting attendees with the best drinking places - as well as with each other. An international party set adds to the growing excitement as we welcome neighbouring Greeks, Israelis, Aussies, Scandinavians and other nations who join UK trendsetters and locals. By Monday, with everyone arrived and fully kitted out the festival comes to its first full crescendo as our headliners bring everyone together in one 2000+ late night arena party. Alongside the snow and non-stop partying, Horizon will also be putting on a few extras for our visitors this year. If the late nights are getting to you, or you just need a bit of TLC, there will be spa packages available and poolside Ibiza ChillOut Sessions. Or, if you’re up for more action, why not get involved in snow mobiling, igloo building, the snow ball fight league, flash mob ski downs

or the House and Techno vs. Bass and Garage Paintball war – the war to end all wars, where you defend your genre in this Pirin Mountain Forest colour bombing riot. For those looking to perfect their boarding technique, there will also be ‘Ride with the Pros’ sessions, where professional riders will show you snow park tips, tricks and demos for as little as $100!
the ski school at very low cost and intermediates can make good use of the long blue and red runs. The mountains’ black runs are guaranteed to clear advanced skiers’ fuzzy heads in preparation for the next series of parties.
Horizon Festival 2015 will see a wide array of electronic artists including: House and Techno artists Moodymann, KiNK, Ben UFO, Move D and Egyptian Lover performing both on the slopes and around the downtown clubs. The Bass and Garage scenes will be represented by acts such as DJ EZ, Om Unit and Benton, while the Groove side of the festival will be covered with live appearances from Submotion Orchestra, Fatima and the Eglo Band and Mungo’s Hi-Fi. On top of that, a whole host of up-and-coming artists are billed across the seven-day festival.
BBM readers can enjoy a special discount when they book using the promotional code BBM20 when they book through www.horizonfestival.net.
Prices for the week (accommodation, skiing and festival entrance) start as low as $490 per person.

Not only is Bansko full of great bars and clubs, it’s also really cheap to eat and drink, and has one of the longest ski seasons in Europe and the 70kms of breath-taking mountain ski slopes up to 2600m high, provide all Horizon-goers ample ski and board fun. Beginners can take advantage of

Not only do festivals provide a live musical experience of your favourite, and as yet undiscovered bands, artists, DJs and musicians, they’re fast becoming a great way to see new places and travel the World. No longer is it acceptable to just go to Glastonbury or Splendour every year; we’re now travelling further to gain new experiences and take in new cultures. Going to a festival in a new location means that you can combine travel – seeing and doing new things – with the event being just one highlight of your trip and creating a soundtrack for your journey. There’s one company that is aiming to make it oh so easy to combine your love of music with seeing the world, and that’s Beats Travel. Taking passengers off of the beaten track (excuse the pun) to locations with rich and interesting histories, Beats will showcase the music, art, culture, vibe and lifestyle of each location, through exploration and events. 16
www.bbmlive.com
Balkan Beats
On the Balkan Beats tour, you will get to party at EXIT Festival in Serbia and Sea Dance in Montenegro, while seeing the sights and gaining new experiences in Belgrade, Bosnia and Croatia. Throughout 14 days, you will get to see the artistic and political graffiti of Belgrade, try the cuisine that is loved by the locals and get a taste of the city’s history with a tour of the Kalemegdan Fortress. Once in Bosnia, you can explore the capital city of Sarajevo, soak up the nightlife, browse the markets and learn all about the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. Your descent into Montenegro will be met with beaches, drinks and rooftop BBQ to preapre for Sea Dance Festival the following day. When the three-day festival has come to an end and you’re partied out, Croatia hold your final destination of Split. On the way, stop in the nowfamous city of Dubrovnik and explore the grounds that are used in Game Of Thrones.
Island Beats
You get to see much of Croatia on the Island
BEATS TRAVEL The trip kicks off with a stop in the Roman town of Zadar, before arriving in Pag. This town holds the best of both worlds: the great local food and beautiful scenery, with the hidden party capital of Zrce. With the atmosphere of Ibiza but at a third of the cost, Zrce is the home of Sonus Music Festival, where you can find loud music from the bets DJs, pool parties, BBQs, boat parties and water sports in the neighboring sea. When the four days at Pag are up, you get the chance to recover and rejuvenate with a visit to Krka, one of Croatia’s most beautiful national parks. Beathtakingly stunning, it is the perfect place to swim in the freshwater and stand under pouring waterfalls.
India Beats
A country with a colourful culture, India Beats will venture from Mumbai to Kerala showing a side of the country that no other company can offer including Bollywood, the hedonistic trance parties
in Goa, sailing through the beautiful backwaters of Kerela and the architectural delights of Hampi for a 16-day tour. Journeying through cities, beaches, desert and jungle, you will get to see why it’s influenced so many authors, musicians and film directors in stories like The Jungle Book, Slumdog Millionaire and Indiana Jones. The up and coming India Beats will have a huge cultural aspect to it, but unlike other tours in this country, it will show more of the musical side, such as Sunburn Festival. With a focus on imagery, art and fashion, Beats Travel is the first known Music Travel Company rather than a traditional Adventure Travel Company. This means that you can tour the world and attend some of the finest music events. With hopes of adding Iceland and Mexico to the line-up in the future, the opportunities are endless. Costing from $800pp, these trips are much more than just a festival ticket or city tour. Combining your favourite passions – music and travel – you can get the best experience possible. You can book on the Island, Balkans and India Beats tours from 1st January 2015 at www.beats-travel.com

A weekend away in...
Mandurah Mandurah is one of Western Australia’s most popular tourist destinations, especially among those living in Perth who fancy a quick getaway from the city. Just 70 km south of Perth, Mandurah is renowned for its waterways, and offers a mix of inner-city and relaxed coastal living with many homes built along the waterways. Aside from gorgeous beaches such as Silver Sand Beach and Halls Head Beach, Mandurah is also famous for its foreshore, which makes for a great place to get some fresh air with a number of great restaurants along the way.
Beaches and the Mandurah Ocean Marina
It’s no secret that Western Australia is home to some of the world’s best beaches. Silver Sands Beach is well-known for its calm and cosy surroundings, but if you’re after some action head to Halls Head Beach, where you can have a picnic or barbeque with the breathtaking view of the ocean. One of Mandurah’s best known tourist attractions is the Mandurah Ocean Marina, with waterfront cafes, parks, and market stalls. Visit the Dolphin Quay at the Marina and stroll along the Boardwalk. Here you’ll find a variety of entertainment including live music and boating opportunities - and with any luck you can spot a few dolphins playing in the water!
Restaurants and Bars
Most of Mandurah’s best restaurants are located around the Mandurah Ocean Marina. The Oyster Bar is Mandurah’s only wine bar with an extensive selection of fine wines from Western Australia and abroad, and choices of mouth-watering oysters, cooked any way you prefer. Come on Friday night and for ‘Oyster Hour’, where you can enjoy discounted oysters and drinks from 6pm - 7pm. Another favourite around the Marina is Cicerello’s, with its signature fish and chips, that is often considered the best in Western Australia. To complete your seafood experience, don’t forget to also try their seafood chowder, all while enjoying the sea view right in front of the restaurant. After more of a cool pub vibe? Head to The Monkey Bar and Lounge, order your favourite drink, and relax with choices of entertainment such as live acoustic 26

beautiful view of the canal with many luxurious homes and boats along the way. Keep an eye on the water, as there may be a number of dolphins following the cruise vessels around. Cruise tickets cost $28 for adults, and for just an extra $12 you can enjoy a tasty fish and chips lunch on board.
Where to Stay
Canal Cruises
An outstanding feature of Mandurah is its stunning waterways, and the best way to explore the water is on a cruise ship which sails along the canal. Mandurah Cruises provides award-winning cruise services, often regarded as Mandurah’s best tourist attraction. Book yourself onto a daily Dolphin & Scenic Canal Cruise and enjoy the
When you feel the need for a quick, relaxing getaway from the city centre don’t hesitate to take a short hop to Mandurah. Just under an hour drive from Perth CBD, Mandurah is ready to get you refreshed with its calm environment. Alternatively, you can take a Mandurah Line train from Perth Underground Station.

Most people living in Perth come to Mandurah for a quick trip during the day, but if you want to stay longer and enjoy all Mandurah has to offer, there are plenty of places to stay. Waterfront resorts are located around the Mandurah Ocean Marina, with rates from $116 - $200 per night. For something more budget-friendly, there are also motels and backpacker hostels costing around $79 - $100 per night. If there are a few of you, you may want to rent a house around the foreshore, which costs $250 - $500 per week depending on rooms and facilities available.

EXPAT INTERVIEW
Anna Scrivener Anna Scrivener is working in an industry that many expats fall into: recruitment. With many avenues, companies and sectors, she tells us of her experience, and what to expect of the job. The Move
The Job Search
At home I worked in Higher Education and was supporting apprentices before I left, so it has been a big change for me. I did have experience of working in an office, general administration and liaising with different people, which are basic skills for lots of jobs. I brought some good references with me and was willing to be persistent, that’s the main thing I think. When I got to Sydney I tried to apply for jobs that were similar to what I had been doing at home, but not having local experience was a barrier. You have to be flexible and realise that you might not be able to pick up your career here. I looked on Seek initially and other online job boards. Gumtree is pretty good for those shortterm jobs while you are travelling. Any networking you can do always helps too and you can start researching before you get here. One of the jobs I got in Sydney was due to an introduction from an old boss; my current job was a referral from a friend.
The Job
I am a Recruitment Consultant and specialise in the Early Childhood Industry, so finding Teachers and Educators for Day Care Centres and Preschools. I work for Hays Recruitment now. Other companies I have worked for in Sydney are CCInternational and The NSW 28
www.bbmlive.com
Business Chamber. The simplified version of my job responsibilities are: contacting companies looking for staff; sourcing candidates with the right skills and qualifications; understanding their requirements and then matching them up! Of course it’s not that simple and when you’re working with people nothing ever goes quite to plan, so it’s about being resilient and managing that. As corny as it sounds, the best thing is helping someone get their dream job. I get to meet lots of really nice and interesting people. I enjoy helping them prepare for interviews so they can really shine – a lot of people are really nervous about the whole process. It’s also a job where you get a lot of autonomy and ownership over what you’re doing.
The Industry
I was worried that it would be very sales driven, however, it’s an industry that allows for sponsorship and where I had some transferable skills and qualifications. A lot of English and Irish people get into recruitment in Australia and we have all sorts of different backgrounds. In our office we outnumber the Aussies 2:1. It’s very full-on and can be overwhelming, so I would advise anyone new to the industry to get a taster as a Recruitment Administrator or Recruitment Resourcer before becoming a Consultant. Research and pick your company well; there are lots of tricks of the trade and industry jargon, and getting formal training is invaluable. Reputation is everything in recruitment – yours and the companies – so make sure you are working for a company that you can believe in.
By Anna Scrivener
I came to Australia as a backpacker and I always planned to do the two years, so one of the first things I did was get my farm work done. I worked on a tomato farm in Bowen, QLD. I didn’t think I’d be here nearly 4 years later though! I now live in Redfern, Sydney. I love the Inner West of Sydney and have lived in various places.

Get A New Job We are looking for candidates to fill a wide range of jobs across Australia. Take a look at a few of the opportunities that we have available through our network of employers.
Builder
The average wage for a builder is $74,000 per annum. However, this is dramatically affected by experience and job level. Experienced builders can see a 16% rise in their salary from the national average, while those in the late stage of their career can expect 26% more. This is a stark difference from anyone just entering the building trade, who will see a salary around 31% less than $74,000. The most popular skill for building with regards to salary is project management, which suggests that those in a managerial role will receive higher pay. When it comes to location, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane are popular for building work, with Sydney providing an average of 18% pay increase on the national average, and Brisbane a 21% increase.
Have you just arrived in Australia? Are you looking for work? Skills or no skills, we can help you. Send your CV and cover letter to jobs@bbmlive.com 30
www.bbmlive.com
RECRUITER
Over half of recruiters in Australia have between one and four years’ experience in the industry, and there is a trend for workers with more than 10 years’ experience to move onto other positions. With a national average of $61,000 per year, people in the middle of their career could see as much as 32% more. The location of work can have an effect, with recruiters in Perth earning 14% above the national average, while those in Brisbane receive 11% less.
Plumber
Skills associated with plumbing include plumbing (obviously), roofing materials installation, energy supply and gas fitting, with maintenance increasing the national average salary of $57,000 per year by 15%. Those in the late stage of their career can expect a 26% rise against the average, while entrylevel workers will receive about 14% below. The area associated with the best pay is Perth with wages 11% up on the average, while plumbers in Wollongong can expect 24% below. That being said, Melbourne is where plumber jobs are most popular, followed by Perth, Sydney and Brisbane.
Nurse
There are many roles for a registered nurse in Australia, from psychiatric to sexual health, paediatrics and emergency. The national average salary of a nurse is $59,000 per annum, with skills in medicine or surgery, intensive care, geriatrics and acute care being particularly popular. Experience doesn’t have much affect on salary, with those in their late career seeing 17% above the national average. Despite Melbourne being the most popular area for job opportunities, it typically offers a below average wage, while nurses in Newcastle in NSW can see up to 19% above average.
Getting a job in Australia doesn’t have to be difficult. Just use these tips for secure your next role!
1. Be Flexible
6. Don’t Just Do Business
2. Don’t Brush Over Experience Or Qualifications
7. Try A Recruitment Company
Even if you have experience in one role, don’t restrict yourself from other opportunities. If you’ve been a bartender or event planner, you may find that other jobs arise in the hospitality industry that you are more than capable for.
The experience and qualifications you do have are ultimately priceless, whether in sales, construction or electrics, and proof of them is just as important, so make sure you have formal qualifications and references.
3. First Impressions Count
Read any good books lately? This is the kind of question you may be hit with during an interview to find out more about your character and personality, so be prepared and have something to talk about other than business.
Recruitment companies are rife in Australia. If you’ve got a particular vocation or set of skills, they’ve probably got the job and company for you. And let’s face it; a little expert help can’t hurt.
8. Regional Work
Do you know that someone makes up their mind about you in the first 30 seconds of meeting? Making a good first impression counts in any instance of meeting someone new, so look at every opportunity as a chance to network and you won’t go wrong.
If you’re on a Working Holiday Visa and want to extend your stay, you will need to complete 88 days of regional work, which can be anything from fruit picking to construction. Even if you’re unsure about your future in Oz, consider regional work so you will have it ticked off when the time comes to decide.
4. There Is No Job Season
9. BE Consistent
5. State Your Origins
10. Avoid Empty Words
While Australia may be busier in the spring and summer months, there are jobs all year round to apply for, and winter means there is less competition than usual. The casual work market is buoyant between September and March, but don’t let your job search depend on the time of year.
If you’re from the UK, Ireland, or any Englishspeaking country, you instantly increase your chances of finding a job with no language barrier, similar culture and alternative skills to offer.
It may be boring repeating the same story to everyone you meet whilst travelling, but if your story doesn’t match up when it matters, there could be trust lost before it’s even built. Make sure there’s nothing that could slip you up, and avoid even little white lies.
You might be hard-working, punctual and dedicated, but it turns out, so is everyone else! Be concise on actual skills for the job and make sure you have examples for each.

Get Your Construction Induction Card
Known as the White Card in NSW and formerly Blue Card in Queensland and WA and Red Card in Victoria, the Construction Induction Card is similar to CSCS in the UK, and it is mandatory for all workers on building sites in Australia, with some hefty fines if you fail to produce one when asked! For this reason, employers won’t even look at taking you on unless you’ve already got your qualification. We know this all sounds very official, but fear not - it’s easy to get hold of... All you need to do is complete the course. It’s often referred to as Construction Induction Training, and can be done in a single day with a Registered Training Organisation in Australia. The training is simply an Occupational Health and Safety course (OH&S) and will cost you an average of around $100. You will need to bring 32
www.bbmlive.com
some forms of ID with you such as passport, driving license, birth certificate and bank statement. Once you’ve completed it, you’ll be issued with a plastic ID card that you can keep in your wallet, to prove your ability to work on construction sites. There are courses available to do online, but these may not be registered organisations, so take the face-to-face training and you won’t have any regrets. Since new legislation in 2012, your card will allow you to work in any state across Australia, as it is nationally recognised. The card will come with a photo ID, although it’s a good idea to have some extra ID with you just in case you are stopped on site. The card stays valid as long as you have carried out construction work within the last two years, and anyone over the age of 14 is eligible to apply for the training. There you have it, easy as that. We told you it isn’t all that official and scary! You can find out more about the training and induction courses in each state at www.workcover.nsw.gov.au, www.worksafe.qld.gov.au, www.vwa.vic.gov. au and www.commerce.wa.gov.au. Book your induction today and you can start working as soon as possible.

Teach To Travel
If you or someone you know is considering moving to the UK, and you have a qualification in education, you could be the right person to fill the many opportunities in the teaching sector. We spoke to UK based recruitment agency, Impact Teachers, to see how they get teachers from all over the world to work in UK schools.
If someone was just starting to consider teaching in the UK what advice would you give them? Most of our consultants were teachers first who themselves have moved to the UK from overseas. This enables them to easily relate to teachers going through this rather daunting process. With that said we advise that teachers do their research to ensure this move is right for them. Teachers should look into the UK curriculum and OFSTED to help better prepare themselves for the challenge of teaching in the UK, our consultants will of course help with this, but the more you know the easier the transition will be. What range of skill set do your database of teachers hold? Are there any particular criteria the teachers need to meet to join your list? The only formal criteria our applicants need to be added onto our database are to be able to qualify for a VISA to work in the UK and to hold the relevant degrees in education such as a Bachelors in Education. We’re passionate about improving the standards of education around the world; we take our teachers on overseas teacher
training trips to deprived communities in India and Uganda where our teachers train local educators to raise their teaching level and improve the education levels of their students. We have found that the majority of our teachers are passionate about education and willing to take their teaching to the next level for the benefit of youth around the world. What advice would you give to someone about deciding where to live and work? We recognise that each teacher is different in their needs and wants so we offer a highly personalised tailored service to ensure our teachers are placed in the perfect role for them in a school where they can thrive. Each teacher gets their own personal consultant who works closely with the teacher to discover where would be best for the teacher to live and work. We work with a large range of schools across the whole of the UK, which enables us to place these teachers in the right role for them. For teachers coming to the UK, can you find them work before they arrive or would they have to start the process upon their arrival? We can start the process from the moment they apply! The schools we work with are more than happy to hold Skype interviews with teachers who are overseas and planning on teaching in the UK, in some cases teachers have been offered long term roles just from these Skype interviews. We also offer guaranteed jobs to teachers coming to the UK; this ensures teachers are not left without work when they get to the UK.

TRAVEL
Must Do Activities Along The West Coast Of Australia There is an abundance of activities on offer thanks to the wild but inviting open road up the west coast of Australia. If you’re going to do anything while travelling along the Indian Ocean, you can’t go wrong with these exceptional pastimes.
Sandboarding
The sand dunes along the west coast of Australia are sublime. From the white sand dunes of Lancelin to the golden powder of Kalbarri, this is an alternative to surfing that guarantees all the fun without getting wet. Stretching as much as two kilometres, try your hand at picking up speed and sliding your way down these smooth slips of sand.
Snorkelling
Much of the west coast is adorned with colourful coral reefs, shallow lagoons and separate islands that are perfect for snorkelling. Jurien Bay Marine Park is in the path of migrating whales, dolphins make regular visits and sea lions breed in the area, so don’t be surprised if you bump into at least one of these marine mammals. Meanwhile, Exmouth and the Ningaloo Reef can rival the underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef.
Abseiling
The gorges, cliffs and canyons of Western 34
www.bbmlive.com
Australia provide exhilarating abseiling opportunities. The rocky caverns of Karijini and Kalbarri allow you to abseil to the depths of the land and see millions-of-years-old formations up close. If you think you can shimmy your way down a 20-metre wall of red rock, WA is your haven.
Feed Bottlenose Dolphins
One of the few places wild dolphins come up to shore, Monkey Mia provides visitors with the unique experience of getting up close with the beautiful bottlenose. For over 40 years, a small group of these intelligent mammals have been visiting Monkey Mia almost every day on their own accord, and you can greet and feed them in the clear blue waters of the shore.
Ride A Camel
Picture it: the sun setting over the turquoise waters and golden sands, while you sit on the back of a camel treading its way along Cable Beach. An iconic tour that’s truly a spectacular way to experience Broome, time it right and you might even get the chance to witness the Staircase To The Moon as the moon reflects light across the exposed tidal flats.

JUMP IN TO 2015 WITH SOUTHERN SKYDIVERS Tandem skydiving is often the first experience people have with the world of skydiving. Whether you’re super excited about jumping out of a plane or you have butterflies in your stomach just thinking about it, skydiving is a fun and exhilarating experience that we should all do at least once in our lives. If you’re unsure about taking the jump and have some questions, here are some of the most common queries about tandem skydiving, answered by the professionals. Will I get sick from skydiving? While everyone is different, in general, you shouldn’t become sick from skydiving. If you suffer from motion sickness, you may want to talk to your tandem master before skydiving and request that they make as few turns as possible. As your safety is their main priority, they will need to make some turns to land you safely! Ensure you do eat before skydiving. Those who don’t eat or only eat a small meal, are generally the ones who feel ill. Skydiving on an empty stomach isn’t advised. If you find that you are ill (not just from nerves) on the day of your booking, contact your skydive company and confirm you are still able to jump. Head colds, for example, are not enjoyable while flying or skydiving. If you are thinking about consuming alcohol or drugs prior to your jump, think again. Skydive masters have the right to refuse your jump if they think you are under the influence. Rather than consuming alcohol to calm the nerves, why not have a drink to celebrate your jump once you land?
actual load the parachute and all attached parts can bear. This limit is generally around 110kg, but it pays to check with your chosen dropzone as they may have different specifications/limitations. Bear in mind, many companies will take customers over 100kg on a case-by-case basis, and may actually need to meet you in person before making a final decision. Your height and build, and the weather conditions on the day of your skydive can impact whether or not it will be safe for you to jump. It is definitely best to talk to your dropzone’s safety officer, as they will do their utmost to throw you out of their plane, but only if it is safe to do so! What is the maximum height I can skydive from? In Australia, the maximum height you can do a tandem skydive from is 15000ft (that’s a huge 66 seconds of freefalling!). How much does skydiving cost? Most tandem skydiving companies are going to have different prices, but skydiving can range anywhere from $250-$750 and beyond, depending on what package you choose. For more tips from Glenn Stutt, Chief Skydiving Instructor and Owner of Southern Skydivers visit www.southernskydivers.com.au. Southern Skydivers operates in Busselton, just two hours south of Perth.
Do I need to be fit to skydive? You’re not running a marathon, so you don’t need to an Ironman Champion! But you do need to be in general good health to skydive safely. If you have back, neck, heart problems or any other serious condition, check with your doctor before you book your skydive. If you think you have a medical condition/disability that automatically means you can’t skydive, check with the team at your chosen dropzone - you might be surprised! What are the weight restrictions on skydiving? All skydiving companies have a weight limit imposed on tandem skydiving. This is due to the

365 days on Fraser Island By Hana (Dropbear) White
From the heart of Queensland’s Fraser Island, Dropbear Tours’ Hana White talks us through all the amazing wonders to be found from season to season on this island paradise off the coast of Queensland. From the blistering heat in the height of summer where temperatures can easily reach 40 degrees celsius; to the crisp frosts on the grass in winter, apart from snow Fraser Island or K’gari as the native aboriginals call it; has it all. Located just off the East Coast of Queensland the island is bursting with diversity. Not only does this island paradise offer an abundance of fresh water lakes, sub tropical rainforests and many multi coloured sand blows the diverse seasonal weather patterns don’t disappoint either. Winter is my personal favourite and you’d probably get the same answer from all the islands locals. Ok it does get a little chilly at night, the Aussies would say freezing but lets be honest they would not know what freezing was unless of course its ice over their beers. You’ll want to have some warm socks and a good jumper if you visit in winter. A onesie is ideal if you’re not worried about how unflattering they are. Wrapping up warm

at night is no sacrifice for the rewards of what a winter day brings. The winters on Fraser Island are just gorgeous, a photographer’s paradise for sure. Fisherman come from far and wide to fish off the golden beaches and because ‘the fish are on’ as the islanders say, the marine life you can spot from the island famous look out; Indian Head is jaw dropping. The water is so clear in the winter and spring months that spotting sharks, manta rays, dolphins, turtles, dugongs and humpback whales from July – October, is easy. Us local folk say the island comes to life during these months. Spring is always amazing too. As the lakes crystal clear waters start to warm, you know the blistering summer is looming. Spring is a very special time of year anywhere in the world I think. It’s always so lush when the flowers start blooming and nature comes back to life right before your eyes. It’s extra special on K’gari as it’s when the dingo puppies are born. It’s really breathtaking when you see mum walking along the beach followed by a trail of little dingo pups with their cute whitesocked paws. Everyone on the island, including visitors, get excited when it’s pup season, even if you’re a cat person it’s so amazing to watch these
wild pups playing and learning from their mother. And BOOM, before you know it, the summer heat hits you. As a Brit I still can’t quite fathom how it gets this bloody hot. I mean it’s crazy hot. You have to regularly lather yourself up with sunscreen or you’ll be lathering yourself up with aloe vera for days afterwards, only to be followed by your best impression of a snake shedding its skin. Of course the summer brings the sun, but with it comes some of the most changeable weather conditions I’ve ever witnessed. When I hear the song ‘4 Seasons in One Day’ by Crowed House it always reminds me of the 1st time I travelled to Queensland with my sister Grace back in 2006. Driving along in the beautiful sunshine one minute to having to pull over the next minute. You can imagine how intense the rain was for us Brits to pull over because of it. I’d say I’m quite accustomed to driving in the rain but this was more like driving through a waterfall. As quick as it had started it was over again and the sun returned. That’s when I fell in love with Queensland. Most of the time the summers here bring glorious hot days where nothing is more appealing than leisurely floating down the icy cold waters of Eli Creek or lazing on the white beaches of Lake McKenzie. But honesty if you were to ask me what my favourite thing was about the summer it would be the incredible lightning storms we see across the ocean. Lightning dancing in every direction, lighting up the sky, as if it were daytime. The storm cools everything down so after a boiling hot day you can go to bed, snuggle up to your man or spoon your bestie without sweating all through the night.
The summer is great for wildlife too. All the reptiles come out to say hello and by this time the dingo pups are learning to fend for themselves. The goannas are my personal favourites, just purely because they look like dinosaurs. Snakes I’m not so fond of, but I don’t know if I’m just lucky, or just in my own world most of the time because I don’t tend to see too many of them which I’m more than happy about. As a holidaymaker you love the heat and of course the general guarantee of sunshine when you visit Australia’s Sunshine State of Queensland, but let me tell you, as a resident you long for the autumn when the wet season is over and the humidity dies off. I like to think of autumn as a great British summer, you know the kind of ones we get every few years. Weather it’s Humpbacks nurturing their young in the calm waters between Fraser Island and Hervey Bay, or turtles nesting and hatching at the far north tip of the island, or birds migrating from far away countries and resting on the island’s many beaches, all seasons on Fraser have something exquisite to see, courtesy of Mother Nature. As you may have gathered by now, it really doesn’t matter what time of year you visit Fraser Island, as there is always so much to see and do. The birdlife and dingoes are active all year round. Not forgetting the regular all year round adventures and natural wonders to see like the monthly moon rises over the ocean, or driving a 4WD along the beach, or catching a metre long beach worm with your bear hands, or swimming in freshwater lakes. K’gari is amazing beautiful all year found, trust me you’ll love it.

Gold Coast Hinterland The Gold Coast is what the rest of Australia would look like if it were American’s and not the British who had discovered this great land. OK, I would imagine the historically clued up amongst you will be pointing out exactly what is wrong with that last statement, but never the less I’m sure you get my point. Take the best bits of American hot spots like Las Vegas, Orlando and Miami and fuse them all together to create one American super-party state and there you have the Gold Coast. If you want it, it’s there. Pant soiling theme park rides? Plenty of them. Stunning coastlines, some of the country’s top night spots and the must explore Hinterland! Walking in a Gold Coast Hinterland So far on the Gold Coast I had been completely swept up in the unrivalled hedonism that is Surfers Paradise and enjoyed being flipped and twisted every which way in the myriad of theme parks. But, for all the unforgettable nights out – of which, ironically, I have complete memory loss – and the back to my youth wonders of the rides, I was now in the mood for some true blue unique Aussie experiences and the Hinterland was the best place to go and do that. This is one of Australia’s most unrecognised and unappreciated spots. It’s a stunning place to visit but to my amazement you never seem to hear about it as a tourist destination. The Hinterland is the kind of place I expected from rural Australia before I left, with walking trails, waterfalls and lush rainforest. 42
www.bbmlive.com
Tamborine Mountain Just 45km northwest of the Gold Coast Tamborine Mountain is a 552m plateau is on the northern side of the McPherson Range. You could quite happily spend days walking around this range and not get bored. What remains of the forestry is sectioned off into nine small national parks each of which are well worth a look. It’s full of Kodak moments with an abundance of waterfalls and lookout points with unrivalled views out to the coast. Springbrook National Park Springbrook is an ideal place to get away form the city hustle and bustle and sits on the remnants of a huge volcano. It’s great for scenic walks and is situated at the top of a 900m high plateau, meaning you’re unlikely to find better views of the incredibly diverse surroundings. The park is split into three sections: Springbrook, Mt Cougal and Natural Bridge. The rainforest is packed with gorges, steep cliffs, and waterfalls, and an hour or so stroll on one of the countless amounts of walking tracks is well worth it. If you’re a bit of a charmer, there are also a few picnic areas where you can kick back and bring out the strawberries and champagne after a some hiking. The Natural Bridge section of the park is another must-see with a 1km walking circuit leading to a rock arch, spanning a water-formed cave which is home to an impressive colony of glow worms – although to be honest I’ve never come across an unimpressive colony of glow worms.

If you ever needed to define hedonism, this is it. Without doubt the Gold Coast is a prime example of the capitalist world at its flamboyant best. This my friends is the reason the Western world spent so many years fighting communism.

Ski Your Way Around The World This Summer
In Australia, with the opposite seasons to the northern hemisphere, you’re swapping snow for sand and sunning yourself on the beach with a BBQ instead of wrapping up in a blanket with a roast dinner and hot chocolate. If you simply can’t spend December to February without feeling the chill of sub zero temperatures, get yourself to one or all of these fantastic winter wonderlands for a skiing holiday.
Hakuba, Japan
There are plenty of ski resorts in the mountains of Japan, but not many as brilliant as Hakuba. With over 100 lifts, it is one of the biggest skiing areas in the country, and offers terrain for beginners and experts. Parks include Happo, which is king of Hakuba with the biggest area, and Highland, which is better for beginners. Temperatures are winter-like, but rarely get below -5 degrees Celsius, so it’s really rather pleasant. Finally – the snow, which Japan sees 10 metres of per season, compared to four-six in Europe and three metres in New Zealand in peak season. Accommodation in Hakuba caters for all, from budget dorms to hotels and spacious, snowcapped chalets. Snowbeds B&B is your cheapest option, with seven nights accommodation, return 52

coach transfers from Narita Airport and a six-day lift pass for ¥73,300 ($728AUD). You can also add lessons and a snow monkey tour for an additional cost. Direct flights to Narita Airport are available from Sydney.
Whistler, Canada
Two hours’ drive north from Vancouver along the picturesque Sea to Sky Highway is Whistler, a skier’s paradise with over 8,000 acres of snowy slopes, bowls and glaciers with powder-soft snow. Set in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, winter is prime time to visit to ski or board Blackcomb, Franz’s Run and Grand Finale. For uninterrupted views, you can’t beat the peak of Climax or Couloir Extreme. Made for holidays in the snow, Whistler Village is perfect for relaxing before and after you take to the slopes. Sitting at the base of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains, there are opportunities to shop, explore, eat and even take in an open-air concert. As it pulls so many people in, there is an abundance of accommodation from central hotels to private chalets, some with ski-in/ski-out access. Book by 21st January 2015 and receive up to 35% off your stay and ski package. Flights to Vancouver are available from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne with a stop in L.A.
Zakopane, Poland
January is the best time for skiing conditions in Zakopane, but to avoid the crowds of children on school holidays, bring your skis at the end of February or throughout March. Situated at the foothills of the grand Tatra Mountains in the deep south of Poland, Zakopane is your base for winter fun and adventure. The Tatras have the honour of being Poland’s only alpine-like mountains, covering an area of 785km and reaching 2654m at their highest point. The main slopes include Nosal for beginners, Szymoszkowa for intermediate, and Kasprowy
Wierch for advanced skiers. If you’re a first timer, you can rent skis, boots and poles for a three-hour basic course to learn how to stop, turn and use a tow lift, or get on board a two – six-day course including equipment, lessons, lift passes and transfers. There are also snowmobile tours, sleigh rides, husky rides and snowshoe walks, if you fancy taking it easy. Those on a budget will love the quaint hostels in Zakopane, catering to those that want to get to know fellow travellers with comfortable rooms, Wi-Fi, and communal rooms available. Flights from Sydney to Krakow include stops in Dubai and Frankfurt.

INTERVIEWS
Growing up in Stockport, Andy explains how his influences came from magazines and radio from a young age. “I just got into music before you care what genres are. When you’re a kid you’ll quite happily listen to punk music and nursery rhymes. I was lucky enough to discover music for myself, but I think a lot of people are into lots of different styles of m u s i c ; maybe the difference is that I like to make those influences obvious. I’m absolutely all over the place and find a joy in doing that.”
night, and so nothing comes as a surprise. It is this approach to DJing and making music that has given him the freedom to do what he wants.
Not to be taken seriously, Andy stresses that the intriguing visuals during a set are to support the music rather than play a starring role.
“For me, the world of music is so varied and bewitching that to confine myself to one thing would be stifling.”
“The visuals aren’t on all the time because the last thing I want it to be is a big tele. What I don’t want is people standing and staring like it’s some kind of AV show. The visuals are there to add to the atmosphere and sensory experience once the party’s got going and is just a bit of fun.”
Another ingredient of the Mr Scruff experience is his famous cartoons. With his unique potato style, Andy has been able to have some control over his album artwork, music videos and live visuals. Despite the connection between his music and his drawings, the relationship was never intended. “They were just two things I did; DJing was a hobby that I did in my bedroom for ten years before I had a tune out or did my first gig, and the drawing was something I did at school, a style that I’d established when I was 15. When I had my first single out in 1994, I thought as I did these cartoons I may as well do my own sleeve and it worked and continued from there. Looking back it was a very obvious decision to make. There’s definitely a similar spirit that runs through and that friendly aspect of it which really appeals to people and helps me to play what might be considered to be specialist or difficult music.”
“For me, the world of music is so varied and bewitching that to confine myself to one thing would be stifling.”
This results in a live performance that’s more of an experience than a show. Much like we as listeners might play different material from day to day, Andy manages to combine house, jazz, soul and reggae and merge them seamlessly throughout the
Those of us Down Under will be treated to such a sensory experience when Andy flies in for the Mr Scruff Australian Tour this February. Bringing his eclectic style with the potato characters, he explains that, while he is familiar with 170 Russell in Melbourne, the Metro Theatre in Sydney, the Royal Croquet Club in Adelaide and Festival Bar in Perth, he isn’t preparing his sets too far. “There’s such a variety of music at your disposal that it’s nice to tailor that on the spot or how the venue looks and feels on the night. That’s the one thing that has kept me interested in the DJ gigs and part of why I play all night. It means that I can set the mood with whatever feels appropriate. To come in with a planned set, I feel like I’m cheating myself, because I wanna drop myself in at the deep end. If I’ve not played Australia for six or seven years and I’ve spent a day and a half getting there, why would I just wanna play for an hour or two?” And we are so grateful you feel that way, Mr Scruff.

For anyone that is familiar with Mr Scruff, the name runs synonymously with electronic music, cartoon drawings, tea and a slightly unkempt look, hence the name. A DJ and producer that has toured the UK circuit for over 20 years, Andy Carthy has taken his love of all different genres of music and made the Mr Scruff sound: a melting pot of styles that can keep a crowd going from 6pm to 3am.
OSCAR KEY SUNG Melbourne artist, Oscar Key Sung, speaks to us about his electronic R&B sound, what to expect from his live show and the implicit undertones of commercial music. Hi Oscar, how are you? I’m good, thank you.
Does this carry through to your stage performance? When I’ve been playing live, I’ve been trying to create atmospheres that are energetic and heightened with tension and relief – I find I can perform more under those circumstances. I wanna work on my live performance and so far I just try and have costumes or outfits that are interesting, and I try and engage with the crowd and make it fun. Being based in Melbourne, do you have a favourite haunt or venue to play? I can be quite fickle; I’ll go somewhere all the time, and then just shun it and not wanna play there anymore. I don’t know, maybe I’ve got a short attention span. I was going to Boney for a while 56
www.bbmlive.com
and then going to Hugs&Kisses all the time. When I’m in Sydney, I really like to play the Oxford Art Factory. I love the sound on stage and the shape of the room. It feels cool and like a warehouse dungeon that’s been done up really well. Do you tour outside of Australia much? I don’t think enough, but I want to. I’ve played shows in New Zealand and Europe and America and Japan, but not a lot. For some reason I’m really drawn to playing in a Nordic area like Sweden or Norway, Greenland, I think that would be real cool – or Korea would be really interesting! If you could change anything about the music industry, what would it be? When I listen to the radio and commercial music, there are so many implicit undertones of disrespect and misogyny that frustrate me. It just really annoys me and has turned me off so many artists in the past. I think it’s more about culture than the music industry, but I have confidence that enough intelligent people will step forward and educate everybody. You can catch Oscar Key Sung at Sugar Mountain in Melbourne on 24th January.

Tracks like ‘Holograms’ and ‘It’s Coming’ have such warped, intricate layers; what inspired you and led you to this electro indie R ‘n’ B production? I’m inspired by R‘n’B, garage, and contemporary electronic, and all of the cold, visual stuff that comes out on the Fade To Mind label I find really interesting. I’m always just into what sounds really bizarre and huge in a club and makes me want to move.

Hi Dom, how are you? Well thanks. Just finished a month-long European Tour so we’re all having a well-deserved rest! How’s the festive period been for you? We haven’t really been around for the prechristmas hype thankfully, although we did play a gig in Hamburg in an authentic German Christmas market, so that was fun. As 2014 draws to a close, what would you say was a highlight of the year? Well this year has been full of highlights – we have released possibly our best record to-date with Counter Records (a Ninja Tune subsidiary). Working with the guys at Ninja HQ has been really exciting for us. Also we played main stage at Secret Garden Party just before Public Enemy and a huge fireworks display… that was a lot of fun! Secret Garden was great! Speaking of festivals, you’ll be heading out to play at Horizon Festival in March 2015, which looks to be quite a unique festival. What are you looking forward to most?
We have a lot of friends who are playing at Horizon so we’re looking forward to having a good party with them. We’ve never been to the festival before but we’ve heard great things so we’re obviously looking forward to performing… maybe we’ll even fit in some skiing too. Let’s hope! Eastern Europe is really on the up for music festivals and as a holiday destination in recent years. Have you spent much time over that side of Europe? How would you describe the crowds? One of our favourite festivals is Outlook Festival in Croatia. We’ve also played to huge audiences in Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republic and all over that side of Europe. They seem to really appreciate us as we keep getting asked back. The crowds are really enthusiastic – always dancing and singing along. Where would you say is the most amazing destination that Submotion Orchestra have had the pleasure of visiting? We did two gigs in Istanbul towards the end of the tour – it’s a fantastic city to visit. We spent a day looking around the markets and the old town, and I even found time to play a DJ set for the Istanbul bass-music crew at Pixie Underground. We rarely get to spend time doing things like that when we usually play gigs abroad. What other big plans have you got for 2015? We’ll be writing and recording our 4th album, and hopefully touring again after another summer of festivals. Catch Submotion Orchestra at Horizon Festival 7th-13th March 2015.

A seven-piece outfit that blends electronica, jazz, soul and dubstep to create their very own unique sound, Submotion Orchestra are a festival favourite and will be gracing the stage at this year’s Horizon Festival. We speak to producer Dom Howard, (a.k.a Rukspin) and find out a little more about this intriguing band.
HANNAH WANTS It’s been a hectic year for rising new DJ Star, Hannah Wants. She’s played just about every stage on the festival circuit going, has held a residency in Ibiza, and is just about to drop her new single ‘Rhymes’. We caught up with the feminine tour de force that is rocking the house scene.
Obviously 2014 has been super busy for you, has there been a particular highlight? There have been so many, I really couldn’t pick one you know. Off the top of my head a few of my 2014 highlights have got to be: my first tour and trip to Australia and New Zealand, my first tour of North America, Hideout festival in Croatia, my Amnesia residency in Ibiza and in England, Glastonbury and Creamfields. Where would you say is the most amazing destination you ended up in this year? Miami was really cool! I’d never been before so I didn’t know what to expect but it was amazing. People were working out on the beaches, the weather was incredible, the views beautiful, the food was gorgeous… It’d be an inspiring place to live. 58

As 2014 draws to a close, what's in the bag for 2015? 2015 is already looking to be an insane year, I get real excited just thinking about it! I have three NYE gigs in the UK and then I fly straight out to Miami to play the Holy Ship, after that I fly to Cancun for a two week vacation, then i’ll fly back and get straight to work. I’m so keen to get back over to Australia and New Zealand to tour again too, I’m hoping this will be as soon after the summer as possible! You've got your release due out on 25th January, 'Rhymes' with Chris Lorenzo... It's such a good rework of the Busta Rhymes sample, how did it all come to be? The sample originally comes from Daft Punk’s ‘Technologic’ but I was actually sat in my car listening to Busta Rhymes - Touch it… I love the track and I just couldn’t get the vocal sample out of my head. As far as I was aware the sample hadn’t been used in a house record so Chris and I hit the studio with a vision to make it work on the dance floor. It’s my favourite collaboration of ours and I’m so happy by the reaction it’s been getting during my DJ sets.
By Hannah Shakir
Hi Hannah, the last time we spoke to you, you'd just finished your Australia and NZ tour, and were getting ready for the summer... how was the summer for you? This summer has been the most hectic and best yet! I’ve played a lot of the festivals and events around the world that I’ve been working towards playing for many years so I really have had the best year my life. It feels amazing to literally be living my DJ dream!
MUSIC NEWS
D’Angelo And The Vanguard Black Messiah The man who was renowned for his soulful music, funky vocals, (and abs) is back (minus the abs). D’Angelo And The Vanguard present new album ‘Black Messiah’. Opening with ‘Ain’t That Easy’ this track refamiliarises listeners with his unique sound, and immediately reminds you of the D’Angelo, Maxwell, Musiq Soulchild early noughties era. The second track ‘1000 Deaths’ opens with a pro black Jesus sermon, referring to the title of the album, backed by a gentle simmer of high-hat and twangs of electronic bass, before muffled vocals start to melodise over the top. Due to the levels staying the same throughout this track, it comes across as more of a filler than a focus. ‘The Charade’ is a dreamier offering, yet the same flatness in colour is present – however this does give quite a live quality to the music. Things pick up on the fourth track ‘Sugah Daddy’ that immediately pricks your ears up. With a snappy piano riff, accompanied by syncopated clicks and D’Angelo’s falsetto vocals riffing over the top, you immediately succumb to the track. Brass snaps away in the background perfectly punctuating the vocals. Things switch up with the fifth track ‘Really Love’ which incorporates a Spanish influence, as the Spanish guitar dances melodically throughout the track, bringing back the romance of the original D’Angelo sound. ‘Back To The Future Part 1’ offers an oriental influence, and maintains the pace of the previous track. A stand out track on the album is ‘Betray My Heart’, which offers a flitting skank riff, and stunning vocals. The muted wah-wah guitar creates a gentle sound showing off the best of the D’Angelo sound. ‘The Door’ strips things back to a stunning minimal sound using a whistle as backing, which sharply contrasts with funk track ‘Back To The Future – Part 2’ which seems to sandwich the album nicely. The album comes to a close with the reflective ‘Another Life’. All in all D’Angelo fans can definitely appreciate his original sound with the release of D’Angelo And The Vanguards ‘Black Massiah’, but just be wary not to be put off by the first couple of tracks on the LP.

EP REVIEW Bristol – The Bristol EP
Remember the sound of Nouvelle Vague? Well you can enjoy this once again with the new EP release by Nouvelle coproducer Marc Collin, working under the moniker ‘Bristol’. The new release features familiar tracks such as ‘Roads’ by Portishead. Taking influence from 1960s movie soundtracks, the second track on the release
is ‘Overcome’, which comes in the form of an upbeat, yet melancholy melody, where you can really hear the Nouvelle Vague sound. Moog by Morcheeba gets a reworking that definitely heeds the sound of the 60s. Finishing up the EP is ‘I Can Water My Plants’ by Monk & Canatella, which definitely harbours the French finesse that is so inherent in the Nouvelle Vague sound. Definitely worth a listen for the melancholy music lovers among us.
Single Reviews
Jennie Abrahamson The War
Jordan Klassen Piano Brother
Parlement Blood
Let us introduce you to Sweden’s singer-songwriter Jennie Abrahamson whose critics have been calling a younger, more accessible Kate Bush.
Vancouver singer-songwriter Jordan Klassen has spent the last year hard at work, earning increasing amounts of plaudits for his assured songwriting, literate lyrics and this intricate, layered sound that has earned him comparisons to the likes of Broken Bells and Passion Pit.
The band, originally a personal project of Stefan Robert and Raul, have released their debut single, ‘Blood’.
Currently opening for Peter Gabriel on his world tour, Abrahamson has just dropped a huge track called ‘The War’. Jennie has kept a slight tint of that northern moodiness throughout her richly coloured and playful song. It’s catalystic, percussion-heavy battle cry anthemry that will command you into a frenzy of infectious hooks. The general arrangements are beautifully put together and an absolute joy to hear. It’s an inspired, rugged, smart, emotive, coolly modern piece of indie pop. 60
www.bbmlive.com
Taken from his already released full-length album, ‘Repentance’, comes a new single, ‘Piano Brother’. Opening with a flowing piano, accompanied by haunting guitars, whistles and a heavy dose of alt folksy somberness. Klassen’s vocals are all earnest and warm as he delivers this little slice of tumbling pop music that sways your expecations but still manages to deliver on infectious melody.
It’s a noisy, rock influenced track featuring a heavy guitar, soaring drumbeat, minimal lyrics and a driving beat. The song, while typically melodic, is a highvolume track that is saturated with guitar sound and distortion, and frequently punctuated by fluent guitar solos. The song will hook listeners in and leave them waiting for Parlement’s upcoming album, expected to drop in the spring of 2015. The single will be available for purchase and download on 12th January.
ROYA
Coming from deep in London’s West End is one of the most extraordinary vocalists of the year. Roya is breaking into the music scene and with a cover of one of the year’s biggest hit songs, the Persian singer is setting up her career in the industry nicely. Boasting a great following on social media, with her Instagram having over 6,000 followers, Roya is showing signs of her popularity. Her cover of Calvin Harris’ track ‘Summer’ takes a more emotional direction, one very different to the original. Roya sure knows how to make a track her own as she moves Calvin Harris’ song to a more autumnal and haunting direction. Roya is not just stuck doing covers as she lends her brilliant vocals to the dance track ‘Step Back’ by legends Chocolate Puma which also features Shystie and Kris Kiss and was premiered on BBC 1Xtra recently. The London singer is set to enjoy a number of collaborations in 2015 with Pete Tong’s latest protege DJ/Producer John Monkman and which will be released through Armin Van Buuren’s label Armada. With her covers and collaborations picking up great reviews, Roya’s career is heading in the right direction and is definitely a top singer to watch out for.
CHALK
For fans of alt-J, SBTRKT and James Blake, CHALK are an indie electronica duo that only formed in September 2014, but if their stylish production is anything to go by, they’ve done a lot in such a short space of time. Josh Fowley and Jonny Breakwell toured the London acoustic scene separately as singersongwriters, and joined forces to create smooth beats, synth effects and refreshing arrangements with beautiful vocals. Their first track ‘Everything’ is available to listen to on their Soundcloud page soundcloud.com/chalkmusicuk, and we can’t wait to hear what else they’ve got up their sleeves.
ROCKBOY
Founders of Rockboy, Front man Lyra and rock producer Pontus Hjelm have each already built an extensive history of outstanding accomplishments throughout their careers and on their latest musical endeavor have decided to merge the two genres together to produce an exciting sound. Each member of the band have found their own levels of success within the music industry, with Lyra, an established rapper and performer in the UK having previously garnered support from platforms such as stations like BBC Radio 1, MTV, The Box, Capital and Kiss FM and was touted as One to Watch in 2012 by MTV! Already in his career he has supported international superstars such as Chris Brown, Sean Kingston, Dead By April, The Game and many more! Not to mention being mentored by mogul and father of the one and only Beyonce, Mr. Mathew Knowles. Pontus equally has had an amazing career founding the pop metal band Dead By April and signing to Warner Bros and Universal Records internationally. With all this talent jam packed into one super group, it is exciting to see what 2015 holds in store for the band. Be sure to check out their debut new single ‘This is Trash Music’.

A Shiny Surprise
It certainly is the time of year for glitz and glam, and if you’re going to wear something sparkly then Christmas and New Year is the time to do it, but would you want to shit glitter? “I’m so excited I could shit glitter.” sounds like something Paris or Perez Hilton would come out with, but we digress. For the pill popping party pigs amongst you there’s a new toy out on the market in the form of rainbow glitter pills that indeed, make you shit glitter. The rainbow glitter pills can be bought from Etsy, and they’ve even brought out a festive golden pill so you can be reunited with your Christmas Day turkey glowing with pride on Boxing Day if you like! Chocolate Farts?
And now for some more anally charged antics. A French inventor claims to have made a pill that makes your farts smell of chocolate. Inventor, Christian Poincheval reckons the pills actually make farts smell nice. The fragrant idea came to mind one evening when Poincheval was dining with friends, and they all became very flatulent, commenting on the incident he said, “We were at the table with friends and after a hearty meal, our farts were so smelly we nearly suffocated. “The winds were not very pleasant for our fellow diners. “Something had to be done.” And that it was. So guys, now it’s possible to have both chocolate scented glitter farts! Projections show that by 2016 you will also be able to have fireworks and Lionel Richie sing every time you need to fart. 64

A Dog Dead Day
A nutter in Indiana, US has requested that upon her death her perfectly healthy dog should be killed and buried with her, which has of course sparked some outrage amongst animal lovers and sane people alike. Connie Lay who recently passed away had requested that her poor pup Bella be euthanized, cremated and buried with her should she die, as Bella is apparently an aggressive dog, which vets have previously advised, be put down. For now, Bella is awaiting the decision of friends and family, who were reportedly unable to enter Connie’s house for some time after her death due to the ferocious beast. Let’s hope someone sees sense and gets Cesar the dog whisperer in and may Bella live out her days in peace.

WHAT A NUT! Korean Air chairman Cho Yang-ho has been forced to apologise after his bratty 40-year-old daughter threw a complete shitfit when she was served macadamia nuts in a bag instead of on a plate. The plane was forced to return to the gate at JFK as she ordered the flight attendant to get off, brandishing him as incapable. The very public meltdown has seen her have to step down as the head of cabin service, yet she maintains various other executive roles. And poor old poppa bear has had to apologise to the media for raising a wanker after the public accused her of acting like a princess. So to those of you travelling on Korean Air, watch out for nuts flying out face if Ms Cho is in town… or just throw some at her.
Suck It
You know that vile joke about a vampire’s teabag? Well it turns out there may be a real life vampire in Manchester. Reports of a middle aged man cycling around and asking women for their used tampons poured in from disgusted women when they were approached by the blood sucking weirdo. Apparently some of his phrases ranged from “Excuse me, do you have a dirty tampon I can suck?” to “You know when you bleed on your period, I want to suck it - and your tampon”. The man was described as being between 40-55 with mid length grey hair. Words fail us.

Britain’s Only Naked Village Nudes You If you didn’t know, then now you do, there is in fact a nudist colony residing safely just outside of London in Hertfordshire, and it’s a village called Spielplatz (those with GSCE German can probably translate that). The little village has often kept their way of life away from the media for fear of judgement, or probably teenage kids catapulting conkers at their nads, but now they’re opening up in the bid to attract new recruits. With the average age of Spielplatz being over 60, they’re worried that the population may soon start to dwindle, so will be appearing in a documentary in order to attract other naturists to move in. The show will cover issues such as whether or not visiting family and friends should have to strip off, and how one man ousted his daughter as she wouldn’t show him her moomoo or tatas, which should be a pretty interesting argument. Oh and if you’re thinking about a cheeky weekend away Spielplatz got a whopping 9.6 on TripAdvisor’s Naturist Guide… score!
Twin Pricks
A Booty Of Heroin
Heidi Creamer couldn’t be a more apt name for the 48-year-old woman who was recently arrested for punching her twin sister after rowing over…drum roll please… a sex toy.
We don’t know what our preoccupation with buttocks is about this month, but in another twisted tale, a man was found hiding heroin in his two-year-old daughter’s nappy.
We’re not exactly sure what the “ins and outs” of the sexy situation were, but as Creamer started getting aggy and putting her sister’s belongings outside, her sister screamed to neighbours to call the police.
23-year-old Kenneth Bell was pulled over when he was suspected of moving drugs. The car containing himself, his two daughters and their mother was ordered to pull over, and the game appeared to be up when sniffer dogs detected narcotics on board. His helpful 5-yearold then informed the police man that Daddy had put something in her sister’s diaper.
When the police arrived Creamer had to be handcuffed and restrained due to her really, really wanting the sex toy… we’re guessing. Anyway… she got charged for battery. Talkabout sharing too much!
After the mother had undressed the toddler, $2,500 worth of heroin was found in the baby’s nappy, “This is somebody that shouldn’t even have fathered children,” said Police Spokesman Detective Michael Mangina. “He needs to own up to his own mistakes, and certainly not involve his children, who are babies, basically.” It’s fair to say that Kenneth ended up in a world of shit, and to make matters worse, was put away by someone with the surname Mangina!!!

Overcoming A Lobe Blow
you might want to speak up a bit as the man in question had his ear torn off. Ice hockey player Kevin Klein, a defenseman for the New York Rangers, took a stick to the ear during his team’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins and was horrified to see a chunk of flesh sliced clean off. As blood gushed down the side of his head and onto his jersey, the 29-year-old was, unsurprisingly, forced off the ice – but not for long.
Aussies love tales of sports stars overcoming debilitating injuries to achieve glory. Sam Burgess was hailed as a hero after playing on in 2014’s NRL grand final despite a broken cheek and eye socket. Berto DiPierdomenico played with a punctured lung and broken ribs in the 1989 VFL grand final. And Shannon “Boomer” Johnson famously had his penis torn off by a pack of rabid monkeys moments before scoring the winning goal in the 2009 A-League final. Now a new name is set to be read aloud in sport’s hall of fame for mutilated men – although
Touchy Subject For LeBron
The world’s richest giant, LeBron James, caused a royal rumble last month – and not the good kind involving lycra-clad steroid abusers performing high-class choreography in a wrestling ring.
The NBA star met Prince William and his missus after a Brooklyn Nets-Cleveland Cavaliers game last month and, horror of horrors, LeBron broke royal protocol by putting his arm around Kate for a photograph. “And the problem is?” some of our non-Royalist readers may ask. Well apparently it’s a faux pas to make physical contact with a direct heir to the throne thanks to some ancient custom from the 15th century. Oddly though, the punishment for such treason is the same today as it was back then – death by social media.
After having 13 stitches to put the ear back together, and a fair dose of painkillers, Klein was reintroduced to the game. He wasn’t done there either. The earless ’ero went on to score the winning goal in an extraordinary 4-3 victory, and even gave a post-match interview to TV reporters with blood still dripping from the side of his head. We can only assume he responded to most of the questions he was asked with the word “what?” “I don’t know if anyone saw his ear there, but he lost a piece of it and they sewed it back,” coach Alain Vigneault told the New York Post. “Say what you want about hockey players, but they’re tough sons of bitches.”
Cheerleader Gets A Bit Cagey As a general rule of thumb, the female fighters of the UFC world aren’t your traditional beauties – not unless you like women with black eyes and busted lips, in which case you seriously need to turn yourself in to the police as soon as possible. They’ll give you the help you need. But it seems UFC has found its Maria Sharapova – if Sharapova was a relentless machine with thighs that could crush you to death (which actually sounds like a pretty good way to go). Step forward Paige VanZant, who has taken the rather unusual career route of cheerleader to cage fighter and has just won four of her five bouts so far. VanZant says she was injured far more often while on the cheer team than she has been as a fighter. Even more unbelievable, the statistics back her up. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, cheerleading accounts for 65% of all catastrophic injuries to girls in high school sports and 71% of all catastrophic injuries to women in collegiate sports.

Thief With A Lot Of Balls Golf fanatic, Nathan Brown, wasn’t good enough to make a career playing the game he loved so he took a different path – stealing from the game he loved. Brown, of Maryland Heights, Missouri, stole a whopping 42,000 golf balls during nighttime raids on various local driving ranges.
with them. About 2000 have been recovered, but the rest all have personalised driving range logos on them and seem to have disappeared. “We pay extra to have logos put on a golf ball and we get a different logo every year so that we can know which year these golf balls came from,” range owner Carol Boggs said.
His first theft came in November of 2013, but he struck again in August 2014 and then again in October – and while Brown admitted the theft as soon as police tracked him down (thanks to a tip-off) he has so far refused to give any more information. The weird bit is, no one knows what he’s done
Barton Hams It Up On Twitter
Peruvian With Electric Pace
Barton was angered by Hamilton’s victory in the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Awards, claiming the Pussycat Doll-banger should not be eligible as he is a “tax exile”.
The sparky 21-year-old was initially reported to have been killed, but it was later discovered he had suffered second-degree burns and was recovering in hospital. It still sounds less painful than being tackled by Kevin Nolan.
Football’s resident philosopher-thug, Joey Barton, a man famous for lashing out in controversial fashion, has lashed out in controversial fashion at Lewis Hamilton.
The British driver pipped Rory McIlroy, though many thought McIlroy, who claimed two Majors, helped Europe to Ryder Cup success, and ditched a hot blonde tennis player, was more deserving of the gong. “Can’t believe they gave SPOTY to Hamilton. 1. Formula 1 is the most boring sport ever. 2. He brought a dog with him. 3. He’s a tax exile,” tweeted Barton. Not only is that second one a bit harsh on Nicole Shitsinger, it’s also a bit rich coming from a bloke who doesn’t actually have a personality.

Plastic hats off to Peruvian footballer João Contreras, who gave new meaning to the phrase “on me ‘ead son” after being struck by lightning mid-match.
“I felt dead,” said the slightly sizzled striker. “I didn’t know what was happening. I couldn’t feel my feet.” Contreras was playing for Sport Águila against Fuerza Minera when the lightning strike occurred. An assistant referee was also struck but recovered a short time later. Still, you can be sure he’ll think twice about raising his flag next time he spots an offside during a thunderstorm.
NBA Star Snaps Off More Than He Can Handle
Robbie Savage’s streak of six consecutive victories in BBM’s monthly “Dumbest Sportsperson” competition has been ended by basketball star Andre Drummond.
fellow rider Phillip Enright. Sadly, eagle-eyed stewards spotted Russell’s skulduggery and issued both him and Enright - adjudged to have been complicit - with a fiveday racing ban.
“I never set out to do this as it wasn’t The Detroit Pistons centre deservedly took home the premeditated,” Russell lied. “The suspension award after Snapchatting a photo of himself speeding has come as a bit of a shock. I’ve nothing more on a highway. So that’s one charge of speeding, and to say and will have to digest it.” one charge of using a mobile phone while driving. Although of course, they don’t call them mobiles in America, they call them cells – which ironically is where he’ll end up if he carries on like this.
Whipping Boys Get Banned
Ask any jockey what it is they love about horse racing, and the guaranteed reply will be: “it’s the thrill of thrashing an animal’s bare buttocks with a thin piece of leather.” If you can’t do that, what’s the point? It’s a question jockey Davy Russell had to deal with while he was on board the favourite, Leave At Dawn, in the 1.15pm at Clonmel in Ireland. He was stuck in the back of the pack and had dropped his whip early on. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and so the 35-year-old took drastic action and grabbed a whip from
Joke of the month...
“Theirry Henry briefly put hope back into the hearts of Arsenal fans as he announced he would not be signing another contract with New York Red Bulls. Turns out retiring to be a pundit with Gary Neville is a better option then playing up front for Arsenal.”
Poor old Phil Neville. The fact his rat-faced brother Gary is considered the good-looking one says it all. Whether it’s playing, commentating, or just being bloody annoying, he’s never quite lived up to the standards set by is older sibling. Well now, finally, after 37 years, he’s done something that’s vaguely more controversial than boring the general public to death with his inane commentary – he’s offended Christians on Twitter, and that is one religious anthill you don’t want to poke. Poor old Phil thought he was doing something nice when he tried to praise Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea by posting a picture of Jesus next to him. Sadly, online Christian soldiers asked themselves “What would Jesus do?”, so decided to slap the other cheek and relentlessly troll the lesser Neville.
By Richard Gadsby
The icing on the cake is shortly after the first photo, which showed his speedometre doing 96 in a 70 zone, Drummond Snapchatted a picture of himself still driving without his seatbelt on. Idiot.

CRYSTAL BALLS SCORPIO
Disappointment is in store this month when your performance as “Buttons” in the local panto production of Cinderella fails to earn a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at this year’s Oscars. To rub salt into the wound, the Oscar eventually goes to Kevin Spacey for his portrayal of Widow Twanky in a Nottingham Theatre production of Aladdin.
ARIES
Due to an administrative mixup at Fifa, the right to host the 2022 World Cup is taken away from Qatar and instead given to you. Despite your initial protests, Sepp Blatter’s offer of $10billion to help build the necessary infrastructure proves too tempting. By the end of January, work has already begun on turning your bathroom into an 80,000 capacity stateof-the-art football stadium, with similar plans ahead for your living room, kitchen and linen closet. Despite the obvious problems, it’s still considered a more sensible idea than giving it to Qatar in the first place.
LEO
You finally admit defeat in your attempt to get the word “Leotard” registered as an obscene word on the basis that it’s offensive to Leos who suffer from mental impairments.
TAURUS
Inspired by hit show Breaking Bad, you decide to open a law firm called “Better Call Taurus”, dispensing questionable legal advice to the dodgiest icedealing members of the zodiac (like Libra and Scorpio). Your 70

company catchphrase is: “No win, no fee… no bull”, and you use Bully from ‘80s quiz show Bullseye as your firm’s logo.
CANCER
Remember that film Sliding Doors where Gwyneth Paltrow just misses her train in one plot line but makes it in the other one? “If only I could tuuurn back time, if only I could say that I was in a Barbie world,” crooned Aqua on the soundtrack. Well something similar happens to you this month when you come so close to missing/catching your train that it could go either way. In fact, you technically do go either way as a faulty door actually cuts your arm off as you try to hold it open. And in a strange quirk of fate, one of the nurses hums that Aqua song as you’re carried to the emergency surgery department. Spooky.
LIBRA
Your attempt to lose weight gets a boost this month when you shed 6kg in the first week of your intense new fitness regime. Well done! Admittedly it’s not got much to do with the exercise, it’s more to do with the fact that you’re hit by a car while jogging and lose a leg.
CAPRICORN
After hearing good things, you decide to go and see Birdman this month. Not Birdman the film though, Birdman the homeless guy in Kings Cross who squawks like a parrot and flaps his arms up and down like wings. Funnily enough, you also have a nickname related to one of this year’s Oscar contenders – Nightcrawler: which is apparently what the prostitutes of Kings Cross call you due to your nocturnal habits.
AQUARIUS (brought to you by McDonald’s)
According to this horoscope’s new sponsors, McDonald’s, you’re in for a Mac-tastic January – and with McDonald’s’ great New Year offers, why wouldn’t you be? Whether you’re a Big Mac lover or a McFlurry kind of person, there’s something for everyone at Maccas. – and you’re in for a month you’ll never forget if you upgrade with our extra value meals. I’m lovin’ it!
PISCES You prat.
GEMINI
It’s the moment you’ve been dreaming of - Harry Styles finally quits One Direction, meaning there’s an opening for a new member. Quicker than you can say “unintentionally hilarious audition tape”, the guys at Columbia Records have posted your visual application online and you become an overnight laughing stock.
SAGITTARIUS
Sorry Sagittarius, but I’ve forgotten the username needed to get into your horoscope account on my crystal ball. Does “Sagittarius” have two Ts or two Gs? I know it’s one or the other. Neither seemed to work and I’m locked out now. I’ve tried rebooting my crystal ball but no luck so far. I.T. are going to look into it and we should be good to go next month. Until then, read a magazine or something.
VIRGO
Sorry Virgo, but I’m locked out of my crystal ball for the month (see above), so I’ve had to go old school and do your horoscope by using tea leaves. When I asked about your month though the leaves just spelt out “What a c—t”. Bit cheeky but nonetheless accurate.
ASK CRYSTAL Dear Crystal, I’ve just stabbed my husband 47 times with a carving knife after he tried to order me around one too many times. Whether it was telling me to stop overreacting or ordering me to put the carving knife away before someone got hurt, that old idiot used to nag, nag, nag me all day long. The upshot is it’s left me in a bit of trouble in terms of disposing of the body. Then I remembered a court case in the ‘70s when a certain young Sydney socialite called Crystal Balls was accused of murdering her millionaire husband, but they never found the body and therefore couldn’t prove a thing. How did you do it? Yours Margaret Dear Margaret, Well I’m shocked that those scandalous rumours and lies are still hounding me all these decades later when I was cleared in a court of law on all charges (apart from the
one about arranging an illegal monkey knife fight – how was I to know you needed a permit?) I loved my husband dearly and his vicious and bloody disappearance (not murder, definitely not murder) still wounds me to this day. But. Hypothetically speaking. If I had to ditch the body of a 63-year-old Wall Street stockbroker whose snoring used to drive me into a murderous rage, then it doesn’t do any harm to perform sexual favours on the nightwatchman at Taronga Zoo in exchange for access to the lion cage. You can fill in the blanks yourself. Then you’re free to spend your beloved husband’s millions on creating a free magazine called BBM so you can insult people who like horoscopes. It’s the perfect crime. Dear Crystal, I suspect my foul uncle Claudius of poisoning my father the king in order to steal his crown and take his wife as his own. But
what plotteth can I conceive to unravel his scheme and bring judgment on his head. I must have justice dear crone, I must know if he be capable of such foulness. Tell me, what must I do to have mine vengeance? No deed is too black to slake mine thirst for his bloody reckoning. Yours, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark Dear Hamlet, Did you just call me a crone? You cheeky git. So you’re saying you think your uncle knocked off your dad so he could become king of Denmark and shag your mum? But you’re not sure so you’re asking me for help to find proof. That’s a tough old pickle you’re in there. Tell you what; I reckon it’d be a good idea to stage a play in your uncle’s honour that replicates the exact events of which this Claudius bloke is accused. Keep an eye on him, and if he flinches or looks shocked, you know he’s guilty. Now that’s an awesome plot – what could possibly go wrong?
JOKES A lesbian walks into a bar and the bartender says, “We have a new liquor in today!” The lesbian says, “That’s great! I’d love to meet her!” Grant, Perth What’s the difference between sin and shame? It is a sin to put it in, but it’s a shame to pull it out. Pete, Margaret River “Out with the old, in with the new” is a fitting expression for a holiday that is based on vomiting. Jane, Brisbane Arnold Schwarzenegger has a big one, Michael J. Fox has a small one, Madonna doesn’t
have one, The Pope has one but doesn’t use it, Dominique Strauss-Khan uses his all the time. What is it? A last name! And shame on you for thinking it was something else. Olivia, Darwin
Mother doormouse said to her son, “Junior! Did you hibernate all winter like you were supposed to?” “Hibernate? Shit, Ma, I thought you said ‘masturbate’!” Fredi, Adelaide
I was sitting on my own in a restaurant, when I saw a beautiful woman at another table. I sent her a bottle of the most expensive wine on the menu. She sent me a note: “I will not touch a drop of this wine unless you can assure me that you have seven inches in your pants.” So I wrote back: “Give me the wine. As gorgeous as you are, I’m not cutting off three inches for anyone.” Shawn, Northbridge

secret bars in Sydney
While there are certain aspects to Sydney’s nightlife that have taken off, this could not apply more to secret bars. Whether hidden beneath another venue or behind an undisclosed door, there are anonymous hangouts that are waiting to be discovered, so we’ve dug deep to expose these buried treasures for your enjoyment.
Ok, due to word of mouth, The Soda Factory is hardly Sydney’s best-kept secret, but you could easily walk straight past it. On 16 Wentworth Avenue in the suburb of Surry Hills, there’s an innocent hot dog store called Bobby’s Boss Dogs; walk inside and there’s a Coca Cola vending machine to your right. But surprise, surprise, there are no cans or bottles stored inside. Instead, it’s your route up to The Soda Factory, a bar and diner serving up delicious dishes of mac and cheese spring rolls, buffalo wings and actual hot dogs alongside simple cocktails and music. With live bands and international DJs filling up the dancefloor, this is one bar that swings from 5pm ‘til late. 16 Wentworth Avenue, Surry Hills www.sodafactory.com.au
Dive Bar
There are so many bars and floors of the Kings Cross Hotel that you may be forgiven for missing Dive Bar, but it’s our favourite. Situated on the lowest of all the seven levels of the hotel, Dive Bar is dimly lit and decorated with pool tables, jukeboxes, intriguing artwork and dozens of bottles behind the bar. Drinking booths make this underground nest more comfortable, or park yourself on a stool at the bar and get into conversation with the barman over a Jack and coke. The party might be upstairs but there’s an atmosphere that you can’t beat right here. 244-248 William Street, Kings Cross kingscrosshotel.com.au 74

Ramblin’ Rascal Tavern
In the cross section of Elizabeth Street and Park Street, there’s a tavern that gets real loud, but you’d be damned if you could hear it above ground. Located beside the convenience store, there’s absolutely no pretension here; the bar staff are bearded, tattooed and dressed in black, food is strictly the free spicy kernels you find on the bar and any night of the week is a great time to head inside. This place specialises in drinks, from cognac to cocktails, and walk-ins are welcome – if you can find it. They don’t even have a phone to give you directions for Christ’s sake… 199 Elizabeth Street, Sydney
BBM Staff Favourite: The only catch is you have to find it yourself
A venue that has become the CBD’s favourite pizza parlour/live rock music venue, is our favourite dive bar in Sydney. This secret whiskey bar has a unique style as you walk through the door into an American themed speakeasy bar, with an extremely well knowledged barman, just three booths and in our opinion one of Sydney’s best drink menus. We’re giving nothing away, because the bar is your reward for the efforts put in to finding it. Sydney CBD
