Soaking up the sunshine Now that summer has hit we all end up in that age-old predicament of where to head on a sunny day… is it beach or bar? Well seeing as you’re in Australia you don’t have to decide and you can kill two birds with one stone by heading to some of Sydney’s finest beachfront bars...
The Bucket List, Bondi Beach
Head to The Bondi Pavillion on Queen Elizabeth Drive for one of Bondi’s newest bars that is placed strategically on Bondi Beach.. With both a parasol covered outside drinking area and a wooden-clad inside area too, you can eat their beer-battered local fish where ever suits you best. Providing not just a regular pub grub menu, for the foodies out there we recommend the Steamed Bloody Mary Mussels as one of The Bucket List’s finest dishes. Bondi Pavillion, Queen Elizabeth Drive, Bondi (02) 9365 4122 www.thebucketlistbondi.com
Beach Palace Hotel, Coogee Beach
Being under 10km’s from Sydney CBD, it’s no wonder that the city folk come here to have a drink after a hard day’s work while looking over the golden sands of Coogee Beach and the Pacific Ocean beyond. With sport, poker, pool and more, the Beach Palace Hotel is really just one of those places with something for everyone. 169 Dolphin Street, Coogee (02) 9664 2900 www.beachpalacehotel.com.au

Manly Wharf Hotel, Manly Wharf
Situated a 20 minute ferry ride from the CBD is the small but perfectly compact Northern Beaches resort of Manly. A stone’s throw from the ferry wharf is Manly Wharf Bar, which is snuggly sandwiched with a beach on both sides. Known as the hangout for the cool kids where the trim, toned, bold and beautiful come together to socialise on the jetty bar. With boats, ferries, paragliders and paddle boarders going by, the view most definitely beats that of the usual four walls that pubs provide. The only downside being that when day turns to night, if you aren’t dressed up to the nines you can easily feel like the odd one out. Manly Wharf/ East Esplanade, Manly (02) 9977 1266 www.manlywharfhotel.com.au
Manly Wine Bar, Manly Beach
Head through Manly’s town centre, turn left and you may just stumble across Manly Wine Bar. Inside it is uniquely decorated with odds and sods dotted around, why sit inside when outside there is a three kilometre long beach. It certainly isn’t one of the cheapest bars around but it does get bonus points
for its location, making it well worth the extra spend. Cocktails all round then! 18-13 South Steyne, Manly (02) 8966 9000 www.manlywine.com.au
Coogee Bay Hotel, Coogee Beach
This massive beachfront hotel in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs describes themselves rightly as “so much more than just a hotel.” This multi-award winning hotel is also an entertainment venue boasting no less than seven bars, one of Sydney’s biggest beer gardens and some of the best boutique accommodation around. The picturesque Coogee Beach is popular with swimmers, sunbathers and surfers alike and the tourists pile in on buses to get their taste of it. 253 Coogee Bay Road, Coogee (02) 9665 0000 www.coogeebayhotel.com.au

SYDNEY
Discover Bronte and Clovelly... Sun, sea and surf surround the beachside suburbs of Bronte and Clovelly making it the perfect place to reside whilst you are living the Sydney life.
The famous Bondi to Coogee walk and the annual long distance swim from Bronte to Bondi make for a suburb full of fitness fanatics (surfing is obviously very important around here too). Imagine waking up at sunrise, taking a stroll to the beach or jogging around to the next bay where you can have a ‘wake-up’ dip in the refreshing rock pools before heading into the office an hour later!
Life at the beach... Life in the beach suburbs of Sydney involves some of the world’s greatest lifestyle aspects. Only 8km from Sydney’s CBD, Bronte and Clovelly have everything you need whilst living, traveling and/or working in Sydney - that is if you don’t mind the short commute to the city centre. With plenty of accommodation, bars, restaurants and natural beauty the only thing missing is the urban-style of living which is most definitely not for everyone but something you must consider when starting life in a seaside suburb.
Eating around Bronte and Clovelly Specc Café have their menu down to a tee. From Wednesday to Saturday nights check out their new spring/summer menu, which includes specialties such as their seafood risotto of Tasmanian mussels.
Pop over to Bronte where you will find Pure Bronte Pistachio, the perfect place for an organic breakfast, mouth-watering lunch dishes, afternoon gelato and even a light evening meal. If you are heading back from the surf or the ‘Bogey Hole’ Rock Pools as they are known, head to the Bogey Hole Cafe on the south side of the park in Bronte for a refreshing cup of tea and a muffin. If a cup of tea just won’t do and you are thirsty for some of the ‘harder’ stuff, head to the Swell Restaurant for a refreshing Asahi or Peroni amongst other beers and snacks. A little way in on Macpherson Street, you will find the real hidden gem of the area, the Three Blue Ducks restaurant. With a boutique beer collection and the chefs on show, music flowing gracefully through the air and uber cool waiting staff, be assured you’re in for a damn good time. It may be worth calling up and booking a table, as this Three Blue Ducks is no secret within the Bronte community. By day this is a graffiti-laden coffee and cake haven and by night you expect an electric atmosphere with pork belly served to perfection.
Drink and Play Waves Surf School in Bronte on Murray Street offers a variety of lessons from one-hour surf sessions through to a full day out on the surf.
The coffee and deli culture is huge throughout Sydney, but particularly in Clovelly with places such as Clodeli on Clovelly Road positioned right on your doorstep.
The newly renovated Clovelly Hotel has a heated alfresco outdoor smoking area – is a great venue for live sports and they also have a huge Sunday session in the courtyard.
As you walk to the beach in the morning, check out this café-come-deli for some royal old treats. The crew at Clodeli know their cheese and import fine meats from across the world - perfect for that picnic with a bottle of red down the beach on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Snorkelling at Gordon’s Bay Marine Reserve is a must.
12 www.bbmlive.com
Accommodation... When looking to settle in areas such as these, it can be a good idea to check into a local hostel first or bunk at a mates while you visit some house shares and look for a job to get your self stable.
Hostels rates are around $175 p/w in a six-bed dorm. However, if you are ready and financially able to throw yourself straight into the working life, apartments with wonderful amenities and views are readily available throughout Bronte and Clovelly. If you are a solo traveller or here with your better half - a one-bedroom apartment in the suburb of Clovelly will set you back $450 p/w. A two-bedroom apartment can be rented from around $600 p/w. (Some are unfurnished so make sure you double check with the estate agent before viewing the accommodation.) For three-bedroom apartments, beautiful townhouses are the way forward and usually have two bathrooms for around $1000+p/w. Bronte is slightly more expensive for the same kind of accommodation. For large four-five bed houses, you and your friends could move in for $1,950 a week, which seems steep but when you look at the standard of the housing in these kind of areas and the facilities they have, it’s more than worth the money. Perhaps you are not looking to stay in Sydney for more than a few weeks. Clovelly Bed and Breakfast have home-stay accommodation that can house up to seven people. Rates range from $130-$180 per night, per room and suit independent travelers, couples and small group bookings. Also there are rent-by-night apartments in both suburbs, starting at $128 per night- two bedrooms. (www.homeaway. com.au).
Getting to Bronte and Clovelly from the city From Sydney Central Station to Bondi Junction Take the suburban train out to Bondi Junction. From Bondi Junction to Bronte/Clovelly Take the 360 or 378 bus to Bronte or Clovelly *Please check bus routes prior to travel by calling 131 500 or visit www.131500.com.au/plan-your-trip/timetables

MELBOURNE
Out and about around La Trobe Street La Trobe Street is a name often on the lips of Melburnians and travelers who like to socialise, party, shop and be in the hustle and bustle of an iconic city such as Melbourne. Here BBM gives you the low down on La Trobe. With pubs, restaurants and bars throughout, La Trobe Street is a hot-to-trot enclave, perfect for a day out, or a habitable spot to live in the city. It runs from east to west and forms the northern boundary of the CBD streets, known as the Hoddle Grid.
ready for you to kick some bowling butt. Blast and bowl your way through the evening with their combo deal for a game of bowling and ‘lock and load’ laser tag. Also, check out their everyday offers where they have some periods throughout the week with cheaper games and snooker.
Eating around La Trobe Street
Accommodation...
La Trobe Street is full of exciting eateries such as the La Trobe Café, which is a traditional coffee shop, perfect for grabbing a quick coffee and cake. The Basement Cafe is a great place to pop into when you’re feeling your tummy grumble on your lunch hour or similarly if you’re having a wander through the city and fancy a coffee. The Basement Cafe has a cool retro feel to it with the unique vinyl- filled interior and a great selection of music.
La Trobe Street has a few different options for accommodation in the CBD area. The Carlton Gardens lie at the eastern end of the street, and the western end is at Victoria Harbour in the Docklands precinct. This means you are surrounded by exciting sights, historical landmarks, and the choice of city skyline views or waterfront outlooks. An apart hotel such as Harbour View Apartments will cost around $140 a night for three people, which is perfect for a central location whilst you and your friends are getting set up in the CBD with your own place. Apartments on La Trobe Street are quite generous in size and local amenities, in relation to the cost and to how centrally located they are. For long-term accommodation, you can rent a one bedroom apartment from around $350 p/w, a two bedroom from $500 p/w and a three bedroom apartment from $850 p/w.
When a bite to eat just won’t do, and you’re missing the authentic pub feel from back home; The Duke of Kent Hotel speaks beer, food and a buzzing atmosphere. The Duke offers a $10 lunch menu and great drink promos every day.
Drink and Play The Asian Beer Café is a place that welcomes you like a regular from your first visit. It’s chilled out vibe and more-than-helpful staff makes for a comfy day session. There is a huge choice of food including ‘Bar only street food’ and ‘late night Thai’. The Thousand Pound Bend Café is an acoustic music café on a Sunday where you can have a jam if you feel like it or just hang around and soak up the atmosphere. Throughout the week this place is always a busy spot and full of artistic and welcoming custom. Their bargain burger day on a Tuesday with a cheap pot of beer is also a great option and makes it well worth a visit. They have great art, poster and clothing galleries where you can lose yourself for a few hours in between drinks. KBOX Karaoke is a top night out with your crew, whether there is four of you or 24, the private rooms can accommodate for a night of loud out-of-tune singing whilst you sip an ice cold beer. Get into teams, be competitive and sing your heart out to the 10,000 tunes they have on offer. The Workshop Cafe and Bar is a home from home for all Melbourne creative types. It is a hub where RMIT design students, VCA students, street artists, Musicians, DJs and creative types in general meet to shoot the breeze over a few beers on the rooftop terrace. The venue itself is committed to the arts, its walls provide a commission free gallery space for local artists with DJs playing Wednesday through to Sunday. Tuesdays are reserved for local acoustic acts and the place in general is a design curiosity with a an angular structure seemingly holding a garden above the street. The best thing about Workshop though is that it lacks the pretension of some other Melbourne bars where art is a focus. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and the emphasis is firmly on providing a relaxing environment for people to come together and have fun whatever their background or passion. The prices seem to be the only thing stuck in the past. A pint of Monteiths cider is $9 which in the city is something of a miracle and you can get lunch (and a bloody good one!) for $9 or a pizza for $6. You can see why many people think of The Workshop as their home from home in Melbourne. If you are looking for a fun night out with work mates, travel mates or heading out on a date - Strike Bowling is newly renovated and

Franklin Street also has a lot to offer and accommodation is around the same price with some great warehouse style apartments around. With the location being so central, larger properties are very difficult to come across. This area is perfect if you want a one, two or three bedroom property to rent whilst you are living in Melbourne. If you simply want to stay at a hostel for whatever length of time, Hotel Discovery and Melbourne International Backpackers are two of the finer hostels in the city. Hotel Discovery has a great atmosphere and reviews with weekly rates of $180-$200 dependent on the size of the dorm (single sex dorms and private rooms also available). Bed’s at M.I.B range from $26-$30 per night for dorms.
How to get to La Trobe Street From Melbourne Airport (SkyBus) to Southern Cross Station $17 one-way (adult) $30 return (adult) – The service runs 24 hours to and from Southern Cross Station and Melbourne Tullamarine. Remember, if you are solo or in a small group taxis are much more expensive. From Southern Cross Station (tram/walk) to La Trobe Street Tram (three minutes) Jump onto the 86 tram from Southern Cross Station where you will be taken two blocks to La Trobe Street. The tram will turn left as it enters La Trobe Street and heads to the Docklands down at the west of the city. Remember that a lot of accommodation/bars are up the east end of the street and so it may be better to jump off the tram as it enters and wander up as you look around – (Zone One on your ‘Myki’ travel card.) Walk (11 minutes) If you have a spring in your step, just have a wander and find your own way around as you walk straight out of the station and up Spencer Street as you pass Bourke Street, Lonsdale Street (both should be on your right) and then onto La Trobe street. MYKI explained – Myki is Melbourne’s version of London’s Oyster Card. Purchase from 7/11’s or some tram stops and top up your travel pay as you go style. By Frankie Salt

GLOBAL TRAVEL
Holi Festival, India
Welcome to the biggest paint fight on earth...
Every year the festival of Holi is held throughout India, where the streets come alive with colour and laughter. The Holi festival is a celebration of victory of good over evil and commemorates the destruction of the Demoness Holika, thanks to Lord Vishnu. During the Holi festival people throw coloured powder and water over each other as a visual extravaganza of colour explodes all over India. This is to symbolize how Lord Krishna (a reincarnation of Vishnu) used to play pranks on the village girls by drenching them in colours and water. If you are planning on visiting India during this kaleidoscopic event you ought to start planning now. Holi takes place the day after the full moon in March every year, and will be celebrated on 27th March 2013. It marks the end of winter, but bear in mind that it will occur a day earlier in some parts of India such as West Bengal.
What happens during Holi A spectacle to behold, on the eve of Holi large bonfires are lit to mark the burning of Demoness Holika, which also symbolizes the burning of evil spirits. (Much how you might symbolize this on a Friday night with a cigarette after a shot of tequila.) During Holi, people run wild and forget all social protocol, as everyone ends up covered in paint all cast systems are banished as you can’t tell who is who. Holi helps to bridge the gaps between social classes on the streets. In some parts on India, particularly in the north, effigies of Holika are burned…kind of like Guy Fawkes – but in a much more kick-ass way. On the last day of Holi
28 www.bbmlive.com
some people take a bit of the bonfire back to their homes as they believe it will keep them safe from disease and evil spirits. At this time of year it is also customary to burn any bacteria ridden things in the home as an ultimate cleanse.
What to watch out for Holi is an unbelievably fun festival, but remember you should probably wear clothes you don’t care about, as you will get wet and dirty. Also it’s an idea to rub some oil or coconut oil (tanning oil will suffice) onto your skin beforehand as some of the coloured powder doesn’t wash out that easily, and you could end up a funny shade of blue, orange or green for a few days if you’re not careful. Things to bare in mind whilst visiting India during the Holi festival, is that females should be careful if they are out un-chaperoned, as the men tend to get a little bit intoxicated and can be quite inappropriate towards women.
Where to visit and stay There are many prime cities to experience Holi festival in all its wild, friendly glory, we’ve selected hotels in the vibrant realms of Mumbai, Goa and Delhi to ensure your Holi is happy and as fun-filled as possible. The beaches of Mumbai is a sun-soaked rainbow spectacle during the festival, so make sure you book yourself a room in one of the many hotels that line Mumbai’s beaches. Juhu Beach is recommended; the celebrations there are enjoyable and without any unwanted harassment. The Sun N Sand Hotel
is a mere 500 metres away from the shore, and is a 5-star business class hotel that promises a relaxed, luxurious stay for no more than $200 a night . A little too pricey? Hotel Bawa Continental offers rooms for half the price at $80 a night, with an equally good location on the beach. In Goa, the cities of Panjim, Vasco and Margao are all pleasant destinations to experience the festival. Hotel Fidalgo is a central, convenient place to experience Holi, especially if being a walking rainbow isn’t appealing, you’ll have a charming experience within the hotel walls for a worthwhile $140 a night. The second most populous city in Goa, Margao plays host to a buzzing atmosphere during the festival, which you can experience on a budget if it’s necessary. Hotel Red Roof is everything you need in a roof over your head from a barely acknowledgeable $9! As you can imagine, the free and liberating nature of this celebration can be a little boisterous, especially in the city of Delhi. If you’re planning to experience Holi here, look into to buying tickets for the Holi Cow Festival. It’s held outside the city, and is a fairly chilled out affair with non-toxic colours and traditional bhang lassis provided to fuel the fun and frolics. All the while DJs and bands take to the stages for a truly unforgettable way to immerse yourself into the culture and traditions of this unique festival. Plus, visiting India at this time of year is excellent as the weather isn’t too hot (although it is hot) and nature is in full bloom. Holi is by far one of the most spectacular parties on the planet, and an absolute must do in the book of life. By Alexandra Macleod

INTERVIEWS Afternoon Kerri, how are you? I’m really great thank you, I have had a very busy year - it has been manic but I love it! And I am very excited to go over to Australia. You’ll be hosting the Boiler Room in London this evening, what do you find so great about the Boiler Room? I think what it is, is that, for showcasing the new label and artists - it seems to get people talking. James (Madtech) is very excited and he tells me about the amount of viewers and the important following. The last time I did it, I had a lot of fun and everyone had a really cool evening. Although it’s very strange as the crowd is behind you!
Kerri Chandler Kerri Chandler can be thanked for creating the Deep House sound that surrounds us today. House music pioneer, electronics engineer, producer and DJ, Kerri chats to BBM about his life on the decks and in the studio that began at the age of 13. BBM caught up with Kerri on a blustery winter afternoon in Shoreditch, London, ahead of his Australian tour. 32 www.bbmlive.com
So, what did you originally think about the Ibiza scene, as I noticed you had not been a part of it until the last few years? How did Circo-Loco persuade you to give it a shot? Well, Circo-Loco had been trying to get me to play for a while but then they closed. I went to check out one of their parties in Italy, I just didn’t think much to the deeper House scene over in Ibiza. When they hired Tony Humphries at DC10, I thought it was interesting. So I went to meet Andrea (Pelino) in Italy who spoke of DC10 and said “it is just a red room, great sound system and some top DJs but no one commercial and just a really pumped crowd.” From the minute I started playing there, I have never had to change anything I do on stage and I felt part of the support structure and the family of Ibiza. As planes flew over us as we played outside, the emotion was special and deep and so I began playing the wildest, deepest House and Disco to see how the crowd reacted. I then played in London at The Arches with the Circo-Loco DJs and I was sold. That was four years ago. You have been playing since you were 13 in New York and the TriState area; do you remember the first time you stood on stage over here in the UK? ‘Ministry of Sound’ was my first gig in London when I was 18. I have always played New York and so I was fine playing here. It was all set up the same as the ‘Paradise Garage’ so I felt right at home and a lot of the singers from New York were here too. From the first to the last record, it worked and I never looked back. What was your inspiration to become so involved with the House scene? I needed a release for some stuff I was going through. My girlfriend at the time Tracey was out for her birthday and was coming to meet me later around the corner at my club. Her ex-boyfriend took her behind the building, he didn’t like the idea of us getting married, he raped her and killed her, leaving her behind the building. I had to get it all out of my mind. The first record I made after that was called ‘Get It Off’ and it literally sounds likes someone scratching away the record, as my life had been taken away. It’s not about the money,
I always put my life story into what I do; my music shows what kind of day I have had. I love it when people put out how they feel inside; it is the same with all of my singer friends as it provokes feelings and thoughts, which is Deep House. Arnold Jarvis’s song, ‘Inspiration’, came to my studio on the first day as he left the hospital where his friend was dying in hospital as he had cancer. His friend was still upbeat and happy and it inspired him. So I played live and he started making things up, I put a basic track and started playing piano over the top of it. That whole 11 minutes, that was his story. I went back and listened to it and we were amazed how deep it sounded as he sang about his friend. As he sang ‘Inspiration’ I copied it, doubled it and put it where it fit. That was it. That is the song. What changes you from being a producer, to an engineer? When engineering, as I am a technical nutit is my job to get the best out of the sound and let it flow. As a producer I have to dig in to someone and get the gut feeling from my artist. I want to bring out the best from whoever I am working with. I do not ever say ‘do this, do that, sing this’, I want to know what that person has been through. If that is your release, it worked for me. It is our generation of Blues and the Jazz and the Soul and life’s struggles. So, tell me about the creation of your labels, MadHouse and MadTech? Why did you choose to remix the ‘Voyeur’ track? When I meet the person, I always ask what they want to do and [what] turns them on. I went through so many crazy deals and managers when I was young and I want to see the scene growing. I wanted to bring in the next generation. So we brought in youngsters like the Martinez Brothers. So I started MadHouse again, I then put MadTech together for the younger generation to be able to and be free with what they want to do like I did. MadTech is new House and experimental. I will make a mix like I did with the Voyeur music for the same reason. It is crazy how music is sometimes produced nowadays, what does your future look like and what do you look forward to the most throughout your Australia tour? I am going to keep my eye on MadHouse and MadTech; I like to see how the artists develop. As long as I have the energy and my health I will keep playing, my dad even still DJs! I am looking forward to Australia; I have met a lot of people through Facebook who are coming along and I have heard it is a stunning setting.
Don’t forget, you can catch Kerri Chandler live in Melbourne and Sydney in January of the new year. For more info check out www.bbmlive.com
Good morning S.P.Y, how are you mate? Yes I’m very well thank you, I’m just going to paint the house, maybe wallpaper and do some labour work. I thought I’d put in some effort, after all I’ve been playing at the weekend. I have about two-three gigs per weekend now which is cool. What would you say has been the defining moment of your career so far? I think the defining moment for me and every producer is trying to finish a track, instead of me trying to form a fresh one; I just work on the same one and just see what happens. Also when you hear it in a club and it’s something that you’ve produced, that’s a crucial moment. Why did you decide to move to London from Sao Paulo? What was it that intrigued you about the city of London in the first place? It was a big move, but it’s alright! They had some of the courses I wanted to do here and the some of the best of them are over here in London. So I decided to come here to learn more, and also to get involved with the music as well. I said to myself that I would come over to London for a year, do my courses, and enjoy the music and then go back home...but it just never happened and I’m still here after nine years! How did you first get into music? Was there a huge music scene where you grew up? I think it was all down to my father to be honest because he was a drummer. He used to be in a band and do different bits and pieces because he was in charge of all the music. I always used to follow him everywhere and he had a massive record collection that I could go off and listen to, Soul, Funk and a bit of every genre of music really. Where was the best rave you have ever been to? Probably back when I was in Brazil; I went to a basement night for Drum & Bass and I could properly hear the bass and the beats, which was one of the best nights as there wasn’t that much Drum & Bass around in the late 90s. It was back in 1997, and was probably the first one I ever went too. This was when I realised this was the genre of music I liked. We never had parties in Brazil, we had all the tracks and records so when I had the chance to go out to it, I really enjoyed it.
How did it come about getting signed to Hospital Records? I was signed to Med School when I started out; trying to find my sound. They wanted to try and keep the sounds minimal, so when I got an offer from Hospital I was shocked. I didn’t think they would want to put my tracks out, it’s a bit of everything but it’s mainly mainstream Drum & Bass. I showed them the album also and they said that’s why we chose you for Hospital! It was good to go to Hospital and I have a good relationship with everyone on the label. I always have my own style, and never have someone else playing the stuff that I play. ‘Love Hurts’ is more of a heart felt Drum and Bass tune, why is this? Actually every single song on the album has a meaning, I’m not going to tell you everything about it in detail but it’s about a time that was very, very difficult. It’s funny because I get the idea and then I start the track but then I don’t always get to finish it, so I have loads of tracks that are currently half finished. I need more ideas and things to happen to give me inspiration to finish them or to write new ones. How do you see Drum and Bass changing in the future? I can see it changing - it changes a lot, all of the time with the Dubstep and Rock, Pop and House audiences all coming to the Drum and Bass nights now. They hear Dubstep and it’s mixed with other styles of music, like Electro, and then you get a wider group of people coming as they hear different music from different places. It gets bigger all the time.
S.P.Y
Bringing his love and passion for music over to London from Sao Paulo, S.P.Y originally moved to complete a year-long educational course over in the capital of music and culture, and then head back to Brazil. Fast forward 9 years, and S.P.Y is still in London, proving to the industry and his huge fan base that he is one of the most forward-thinking and talented DJs and producers in the Drum & Bass scene at the moment. BBM catches up with Hospital Records S.P.Y to get the down low.
By Frankie Salt
S.P.Y will be playing Hospitality New Years Eve at the Round House, UNSW along side High Contrast, Logistics, Cama & Krooked, MC Wrec, Bass Drop Residents, Low Society Sound System and Bondi FM DJ’s Tickets available at Ticketek
You are also a talented remixer with high-profile commissions for the likes of Deadmau5, Claude von Stroke, Zinc Ft. Ms Dynamite, Delilah as well as Hospital’s own London Elektricity, how do you decide a track you to remix? Normally it isn’t down to me, I get sent the tracks, but then I get to see which ones I like and want to remix for. If I get sent a track and I really like it I can go back to them and say that it’s good and I can do something with it. That’s how it goes.

INTERVIEWS
DJ Marky
The world famous DJ Marky is weeks away from touching down in Australia, so we thought we’d catch up with him ahead of time to find out his favourite places to DJ, and what he’ll be up to in 2013.
Hi Marco, how are you today? I’m good thanks! Nice weather here in Sao Paulo so just chilling. What are you up to at the moment? Well I just got back from touring Europe so I am spending some quality time with my son and catching up on some rest in between shows and doing my radio show. We heard your recent set for Womb in Tokyo went down a storm. What do you look for in the tracks you mix? It’s got to have some funk and must be something I would dance to. I can’t play a tune just because people are saying it’s big or it’s by a big name producer. If it’s got some vibe and I feel it’s right for the time of the night and the way the crowd are reacting then I will play it. Bryan Gee gave you your big break after he saw you playing in a club in Sao Paulo in 1998. How did you first get started as a DJ and what/who would you say were your main influences at the time? Back then I was DJing in a couple of places and was just moving from Techno/Hardcore sets into Jungle as it was really starting to pick up in Brazil. Before that I was playing anything from House to Hip Hop so I have always had a really varied style. I actually started playing on reel to reel tapes way back when, which was really tough, but then moved on to vinyl in the clubs. I had a lot of different influences but I was really into Omni Trio, I thought they were fantastic. Also D’Cruze, Wax Doctor, DJ Krome and Mr Time, House Crew as well as DJ Hype, Origin Unknown and DJ Crystl. You’ve had almost 100 releases in various forms throughout your career. In your opinion which has been most significant? It has to be LK. That track gave me a massive launchpad, especially in Europe where I don’t think many Brazilian DJs had managed to really break through. It was at the peak for DnB as well and it was really different to the rest of the genre so it stood out. I can honestly say that my career would
34 www.bbmlive.com
probably be very different now without that track. Not necessarily any better or worse, but different. You were heavily involved in the Jungle movement of the 90s. How have your musical tastes changed and developed since then? My tastes haven’t changed too much I don’t think. I still have a very varied musical diet so listen to a lot of soul and rare groove, I love playing a house set every now and then and I think your tastes tend to be your tastes, but you have to adapt them to the music that is available at any moment in time. You’ve secured residencies in cities such as London, Tokyo, Paris and Sao Paulo. Where is your favourite place to play and do you adapt your sets for different countries? I can’t say I have a favourite place to play as everywhere is different. Because everywhere is different the sets have to be adapted, not by much but slightly. For example I think the UK likes it much tougher and up front than say Brazil and Japan. What’s your favourite festival in the World and why? Favourite for me is Glastonbury, even though I haven’t been able to go for a few years. Something about the UK in the summer. You’re heading to Australia for the New Year. What do you like most about Australian crowds? They know their stuff man, which is great and a little bit challenging all at the same time. They like to party as well so the parties are always good fun. MC Stamina, who provided the vocals for your first UK Top 20 Hit ‘LK’ back in 2002, will be joining you on tour in Australia. What’s the best thing about working with him? We understand each other really well and he has a great knowledge of the music past and present so can always complement the music by adding vocals when necessary and crucially letting the music do its thing when necessary too - this is something a lot of MCs forget, that you don’t have to chat all the time. Sometimes it’s best to just let the music breathe.
You’ll be at Let Them Eat Cake at Werribee Park on New Year’s Day. What has been your most memorable New Year to date? There’s been so many, but I had a mad ride around the UK a few years ago playing 4 or five gigs in one night which was really tiring but good fun. You’re also playing at Chinese Laundry’s Garden Party at the Ivy on the 5th Jan which is probably Australia’s most famous day rave. Do you change up your sets from outdoor raves to club raves? Is there anything in particular people should be looking forward to? I always play to what I have in front of me, so really the rave will dictate to me what I play. I am looking forward to the Chinese Laundry Garden party though as it is something truly special on the tour calendar. And finally, what can we expect from you in 2013? More music! I have a few tracks up my sleeve after my debut on Innerground for the fiftieth release so I’ll be throwing down some new solo tunes as well as some collars with some of my favourite producers. Thanks for your time and we’ll be looking forward to catching you down under soon. Thanks!

Snakadaktal Having met at school and gaining notoriety throughout Australia, Snakadaktal are the go to band who are bringing a new sound to the table. The five school friends; Joseph, Sean, Barna, Pheobe and Jarrah have toured Australia extensively playing their dreamy and unusual music to the masses. BBM catches up with vocalist Phoebe to get the inside scoop on what exactly a “Snakadaktal” is. Hi Phoebe, so tell us what have you guys been up to recently? Hi Hannah. The five of us have been in the process of writing our full-length for many months now. Through that time we have also been fairly busy traveling, studying, and welcoming the summer air. You’ve got your new single ‘Dance Bear’ out at the moment, what’s the response been like to it? It is lovely to release some various colours that will be spread through our album, and also a little daunting… ‘Dance Bear’ seems to have gathered plenty of kind responses and regard. So you guys got together in 2010, how did you all meet? Our friendship begun during school, which then sprung into playing music together. A kind of ‘playground love’… Ha! We must ask, how on earth did you end up with the name Snakadaktal and what does it mean? It sounds like some sort of Cookie monster - pterodactyl hybrid. (BBM has a wild imagination) It is surely a kind of hybrid. In fact there were a collection of hybrids amongst it... Sean Kelly and his friend once created them. The one which somehow ended up as our name is a snake-pterodactyl. They’re very fun to draw. You’ve had noteable success in Australia, have you got any other pockets of fan base in the world, anywhere particularly surprising? What are your plans to take things to the next level? Australia has been our only direct audience so far, which is delightful. The odd friendly message from Mexico or Cambodia is always mind-blowing! Other than the planning of Australian tours next year, we have the shaping of some other sneaky little ideas. You guys are from Australia, and there has been a more global recognition for Australian music of late with the rising popularity of artists such as Gotye, Kimbra and San Cisco in the UK and US, what do you think has changed to make this happen?
The recognition that these artists are receiving is so wonderful. The way word spreads round-theclock has always changed unrelentingly as people do. The ways of communication now seems to be… Immortal. Do you think the globalisation of the internet has played a key part in this, or do you nod your head to trail blazers such as Gotye for writing such an infectious song such as ‘Somebody’? Yes, some people seem to be a little wired now, by the internet, and that has contributed to the song’s international success, but is certainly not responsible for it. The song is, outrageously compelling. People just spread it and ate it up, so quickly. Maybe a little like fashion, we feel groovy if we’re wearing it. What was it like touring with The Jezebels? Any crazy stories from the tour? It was a fantastic tour. They were lovely people to travel with and even presented us with a beautiful card and gift the night of our last show together. That memory will stay with us. Snakadaktal’s music can be described as Dream Pop, but how would you pigeon hole it into a genre...what elements would you say are present? Maybe it’s Pigeon - Pop? It is tough to use generic genre names to categorize and suggest sound, and especially hard to find these words when we’re so connected to creating the sound. Collectively, we seem to capture elements of intimacy, wideness, depth, some clumsiness and the colour blue, in our writing. Your makeup in the video for ‘Chimera’ is awesome, did you get a say so in the styling? The Chimera shoot was like going to a dress up party and not quite knowing the theme… The makeup, styling and clip design was decided around us, we were like little puppets.
Your voice is quite haunting, how did you “find” your voice? Did you listen to any particular artist growing up that you feel shaped your voice? I never tried to create a haunting voice. Ha ha. Many, many musicians have had an impact on the way that I hear and form sounds, but the expression of each story is different, I am always discovering new aspects of that. The songs we have released so far were recorded before I turned 18, and people now notice the change of timbre and mood in my voice. I suppose it is just ever changing. ‘Boy’ is quite different from ‘Air’ and ‘Dance Bear’ what kind of music do you want to put out there? I never thought about it like that. We are yet to put our heads together “before the game” and hype to each other about what we want to put out there, and how we want to “play”. Our journey was never about creating a strategy or a wave of new-fangled sound. We are creating the story as it comes, and trying not to neglect the diversities. Obviously you’ve got to be quite tough to stay true to your sound and your band when you’re an attractive female in a band and try to not become something that isn’t you. How important do you feel it is to control the level of commercial success in order to protect yours and your bands image? Staying true to who we are seems to happen naturally. We feel earthed, in that sense, and won’t be swept away by the nonsense. I guess we try to avoid things that make us uncomfortable, or shy. Now let’s get to know Phoebe a little better... Quick fire questions... River or Ocean? Ocean Beyonce or Debbie Harry? Beyonce Fries or salad? Ah! Both. Dogs or cats? Cats, on laps. Heels or flats? Flats Paul Simon or Ed Sheeran? Paul Simon

DJ Yoda
The man that is DJ Yoda will be touching down in Sydney this Christmas Day to headline Sunburnt Festival. DJ Yoda is regarded as one of Britain’s most innovative DJs, having built a reputation as the only DJ to single-handedly inject humour into UK Hip-Hop. Admired for his originality as well as his sense of fun, he is possibly the only DJ in the world who can fill a club cutting George Formby with Jurassic 5, or 80s Pop with New York Rap. Amongst his many accolades DJ Yoda was also voted alongside DJ Premier as “One of the Top Three DJs in the World” in Hip Hop Connection magazine. Born in London, Yoda represents a new brand of mix-master who will play any kind of music to make people dance – with a Hip-Hop set that can take the audience from underground Rap to TV themes, to nursery rhymes, Country, Soul, Reggae, Drum and Bass, 80s Pop and back again, he truly is a musical chameleon. Now’s your chance to catch DJ Yoda at Sunburnt 2012, where he will be playing alongside acts including Helena, Nukewood, Social Hooligans, Urby and many more. Here we catch up with DJ Yoda to find out a little bit more… Firstly for all those people that don’t not know much about you, what is your music style? I describe it by saying I’m a Hip-Hop DJ, but I don’t necessarily play Rap music. So my style is right across the board - I’m as likely to play Country & Western as Drum & Bass. But the way I play it, it’s Hip-Hop. What are you most looking forward to about playing at Sunburnt Festival on Bondi Beach this Christmas Day? Being in one of my favourite places in the world on Christmas Day! I have spent a good deal of time in Bondi, and got to know and love it like nowhere else! What sort of set can we expect from you? It’s gonna be a mixed bag, as ever - but a party set, and I can guarantee there will be some Christmas classics thrown in the mix.

How long have you been DJ’ing for? Since I was 15-years-old, so bloody ages. Besides the wicked Australian audience where else in the would you love to DJ? I’m lucky enough to have played everywhere from Brazil, South Africa and China to Kenya, California and Budapest. I’m blessed with this job! I think the major gap in my travels right now is Russia… What is on repeat on your iPod right now? The new Kendrick Lamar album. Will it be a strange feeling being on a beach in over 30 degree heat pumping tunes on Christmas Day in comparison to Christmas back home in the UK? It will be very surreal! I’m used to a cold, grey Christmas - this is gonna be the complete opposite. What is your favourite venue in Sydney? I love Oxford Arts Factory - I’m performing an AV show there in January too.
Any stand out gigs where you just thought ‘Wow’? I once DJ’d for George Lucas, with the cast of the Star Wars movie there. That was pretty special, given my DJ name! And getting to play in Malawi was amazing too. What are your future plans for 2013 and beyond? I’m just releasing my new album “Chop Suey”, and making videos for every song on the album, so 2013 is shaping up to be very busy with everything associated with that. If you weren’t a DJ what would you be doing now? Probably be homeless. Thanks Yoda… we think you’re awesome and simply cannot wait to hear your headline slot at Sunburnt Christmas 2012! Inside the industry... With the Dance scene growing at a rapid rate throughout Australia, BBM gets the inside information from two of Australia’s most influential Dance connosieurs, HedKandi’s Frankie Romano and Fluidlife’s John Sharp. Find out what they had to say about their upcoming events in Sydney and Melbourne, and how they see how the industry is moving and changing.
Frankie Romano
John Sharp
HedKandi is the global music brand that was established in the UK way back in the crazy rave days of 1999. Fast forward to the end of 2012 and the parties are still going strong as the HedKandi bug contagiously infects Australia. Frankie Romano, Sydney’s top HedKandi House DJ catches up with BBM about his involvement in the Sydney take over and he expresses the buzz and excitement in the air about the HedKandi Party at Bungalow 8 this coming New Year’s Eve.
BBM catches up with innovative contributor to the International music industry in Australia, British Expat, John Sharp about his brand ‘Fluidlife’. Organising events with over 11 years of experience, this brand works with DJs and performers, marketing to management and PR, creating a ground-breaking brand in the musically diverse and culturally rich city of Melbourne.
With undeniable technical capabilities that regularly see Frankie play across 3 decks where loops and acapellas appear naturally throughout his sets, his passion behind the decks is infectious! Whenever Frankie is brought home to the decks, it is obvious that this passion feeds to the crowd and the atmosphere is constantly alive and kicking. Frankie fuses House and Disco with Percussive Grooves and Deep House, making perfect music to feed the beat hungry Dance heads. Frankie states “HedKandi began its life as a Nu Disco label and radio show back in the 90s and has now established itself with the high end Dance scene across the globe”. The HedKandi brand doesn’t just own bars and generate some of the best parties around, it is a clothing collection and music accessories range, producer of CD compilations, along with running exclusive hotel events and they now even collaborate with airlines to make their worldwide parties even more accessible for music lovers the world over. Frankie enthuses; “When we throw a party we combine all these things and provide an atmosphere that’s totally electric, from Sydney to Melbourne, Perth to Adelaide, you can always be sure to expect nothing less than the best!” As Frankie believes, his positive outlook in life where he doesn’t “overcomplicate things” and the rising Sydney music scene, shines through at the HedKandi parties. Why not celebrate 2012 at the Darling Harbour, Sydney for the biggest party in the world? Frankie exclaims “All I’ll say is it’s going to be epic! I do have some surprises up my sleeve but if I tell you it wouldn’t be a surprise anymore!”
John states “Since our inception in April 2006, Fluidlife has evolved organically and respectfully.” He expresses that he “wants people to open their eyes in Melbourne, get out and meet new people, do something different in the scene and enjoy their time here as opposed to just sitting in pubs.” Melbourne is seen to be Australia’s answer to London’s eclectic scene, with international greats heading to the city weekly, delivering the sounds of Europe and beyond to the more underground clubs of Melbourne. John talks about their upcoming event at ‘OneSixOne’ on the 9th December, “We have a Solar Day Rave with Kevin Griffiths (UK) starting at 3pm, then Friday 14th December we have a Lunar Party with Afrilounge’s front man Liefko, from the 22nd December we are hosting a weekly ‘Likes Of You’ Future Entertainment party all the way through to March - and on the 23rd December we are hosting hot duo Dusky (UK).” Do not miss their last Lunar event of the year on the 14th, it’s set to be an epic 12-hour party bringing the best in Deep House to Australia. Continuing on the greatness of the Fluidlife parties, John comments, “people need to get out and find out what is exactly out there, we provide parties for reasonable money, and the scene in Melbourne is massive”. Melbourne’s music scene is only getting bigger and better with the support of you clubbers out there. Start your New Year’s early and make December a month to remember with Fluidlife, by heading out to these amazing parties. Single Reviews Keaton Henson – Sweatheart, What Have You Done To Us
The poignant songwriting of Keaton Henson has previously brought to light the intimate feelings of this musician/artist/illustrator with heart-aching openness. His rare public performances have stunned audiences, whilst his beautiful artwork has been seen, and heard, by thousands across the globe. His latest single, ‘Sweetheart, What Have You Done To Us’ highlights a fragile relationship that has turned sour with painful realism. The words literally ooze with sadness as they are delicately projected amongst a reverb-laden guitar that builds to a devastating finale. Keaton Henson truly is a unique gem of the British music scene.
Tall Ships – Gallop
Brighton based three-piece Tall Ships have been perfecting their progressive sound for years. After several critically acclaimed EPs, the band has recently put out their debut full-length entitled, ‘Everything Touching’. ‘Gallop’ is the second single to be taken from said album, and is a perfect example of their songwriting abilities. Its rolling drumbeats and driving guitar riffs will instantly take hold of your eardrums and give you a wholesome insight to both their past and present sounds. Simple lyrics mixed with tender harmonies help push the song forward onto an epic climax that flawlessly rounds off what is surely one of the bands finest tracks to date.
Purity Ring – Lofticries
Purity Ring’s debut album, ‘Shrines’ is a glimmering recorded filled with glossy tones and pulsing rhythms that is likely to end up in a large chunk of the Top Albums of 2012 lists. Their latest single, ‘Lofticries’ is a striking example of their sound, and is surely destined to put the duo on the map. The track is wonderfully structured with more than enough twists and turns to keep you listening over and over. .
Substantial – Grateful ft. Kenn Starr & Kokayi The

Substantial’s new single, ‘Grateful’ is something that other rappers can only dream about, and that’s all thanks to one of Australia’s biggest Hip-Hop producers, MPhazes. As the beat rolls on, the opening lyrics performed by DC rapper, Kokayi don’t exactly sound unique, and there’s barely any memorable rhyme considering it’s the main hook of the song. Kenn Starr’s addition to the track contains a much more impressive approach, but it’s Substantial’s final word that really makes the record stand out. His flow is impeccable and his lyrics are intelligent, more than enough to push out the other less desirable kinks within the song.
HIM_SELF_HER – Gone Too Long
After almost 10 years of hard graft and dedication in the Leicester club scene, Leon Baggots and Claire Spooner have decided to join forces under the name, HIM_ SELF_HER. Their solid work as solo artists hasn’t exactly hindered the duos progression, as more recent ventures have seen the approval of Radio One’s Dance guru, Pete Tong. The brilliant grooves of ‘Gone Too Long’ are a standout example of what the pair is capable of, and it’s a building collection of sound that holds a steady pace for over seven minutes. That should be more than enough time to get you out of your seat and on to the dance floor.
Real Connoisseur – Faux De Baux
At just 19-years-old, Britain’s Conor Llyod, aka, Real Connoisseur is in possession of some genuine talent. Although this isn’t the first time we’ve heard a House/Bass version of ‘Say My Name’ by Destiny’s Child, ‘Faux De Baux’ is a vastly different interpretation to that of Cyril Hahn. You’ll find a wide array of interesting mixing pushed along by a meaty bassline that you wont soon forget. The vocal additions to the track and intelligently spliced and help to widen the diversity of the track without sounding too out of place. Keep your eyes and ears open for more from this impressive new DJ. By Robert Bramhill
Jonti- Saturday Night
‘Saturday night’ is the new single from South African/Australian and self styled multi-instrumentalist, arranger, producer, and vocalist, Jonti. So melodic and easy to follow, right from the off, the song instantly grabs you and takes you to some other place, a simple, child like place where your everyday worries seem to be forgotten. Maybe this gives out a false sense of security though, intentional or not, as the basis of this song talks about loneliness. The green alien/Shrek lookalike we see in the video may be misleading, but as Jonti describes it himself in our interview with
him, which can be read at www. bbmlive.com “Well the songs about feeling alien and maybe what it’s like to be in a new place trying to fit in which is a constant theme I go through.” Moving stuff. By Duncan Robinson
Netsky – We Can Only Live Today (Camo & Krooked Remix)
Get yourself on a plane to somewhere sunny, lose all of your inhibitions, surround yourself with likeminded boys and girls, and get blind stinking drunk to appreciate music like this. It’s the kind of Dance track that would have been massive several years ago up next to the likes of Darude, ‘Sandstorm’ and ‘Zombie Nation‘ by Kernkraft 400. Now with a dash of influence from Dubstep , the genre is still around to make even the dullest of winter days seem like you are relaxing on a beach, drink in hand, trying to piece together the previous nights antics.

The Penelopes – Now Now Now (Miguell Campbell Remix)
It almost seems as though French two-piece, The Penelopes were designed to support Human League on their up-and-coming UK tour. Their Disco-Pop will certainly please anyone who still has a craving for some 80s nostalgia. However this remixed version of their much-loved track, ‘Now Now Now’ by the very capable Miguell Campbell presents the song in an entirely different light. It has seamlessly become a funky dance floor filler that’s guaranteed to raise a smile.

Prodigy - Fat Of The Land (Expanded Edition)
It has been 15 years since Prodigy released their third studio album, ‘Fat Of The Land’ and subsequently the group has gone on to become one of the biggest touring Dance acts around and playing a diverse array of festivals in the process. When the album first came onto the scene back in 1997, it was received with a staggering amount of praise from the likes of Q Magazine, Rolling Stone and even the BBC. However, the decision to name the intro track, ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ was met with some level of disapproval, mainly from the National Organisation For Women, who found the song to be misogynistic. The band however has always maintained that it phrase means, “doing anything intensely”.
Although the record is exactly the same in every way, you do get a couple of exclusive remixes thrown in from some of todays top DJs, including Major Lazer, Zeds Dead, The Glitch Mob, Baauer and Alvin Risk. This is one of the truly great albums form the past couple of decades and is likely to go down in history as a truly pioneering collection of tracks that has changed the face of music. Make sure you don’t miss out in owning a record of legendary proportions.
Album Reviews Paul Kalkbrenner – Guten Tag Ever since writing and releasing the soundtrack for, and starring in, the brilliant, cult Dance film ‘Berlin Calling’, Germany’s Paul Kalkbrenner has become a household name amongst the Electro music scene. Now on the brink of releasing his second album since his rise to fame in 2008, the knob-twiddling musicians will be hoping that this new record, Guten Tag (Hello) will have a similar effect on the audience as his previous accomplishments. It’s clear from the off that this record is likely to appeal only to the niche, Electronic lovers among us. It’s the kind of music that anyone else might find themselves getting ready to in preparation for a “big night out”, or having it on in the background whilst pulling an all-nighter to get that important deadline finished by the morning. In a club environment, who knows? Perhaps it would be the “best part” of that previously mentioned “big night out”. Soon Kalkbrenner will be embarking on his first North American tour, and excitement is still very much active on the internet following his sets at this summers festivals.
Despite the minor controversy surrounding the album, ‘Fat Of The Land’ has gone on to sell over 10 million copies worldwide, so it seems fitting that XL Records would want to mark the achievement this 15 Year Anniversary Edition.
It’s an album that probably sounds perfect to an avid Kalkbrenner fan. Read our interview with Paul Kalkbrenner on www.bbmlive.com By Robert Bramhill
video for their single, ‘Inhaler’, as well as a recent performance on Later… With Jools Holland, where they further teased us with another new track entitled ‘My Number’, the anticipation surrounding this new record has been exciting to say the least.
Foals – Holy Fire
It has been over two years since Oxford’s Indie outfit Foals released ‘Total Life Forever’, the fantastic followup album to their critically acclaimed debut, ‘Antidotes’ which was released back in 2008. Since forming over eight years ago the band has constantly been winning over audiences on several world tours, as well as appearing at some of the biggest music festivals around, including both Glastonbury and Coachella. The group’s third studio attempt, ‘Holy Fire’ has been eagerly awaited since it was announced at the beginning of October. Plus with the release of a cryptic website, an energetic new
But is it all worth the hype? In short, yes. Foals are one of those bands who never cease to amaze music lovers with their seemingly naturally ability to write impeccable tunes. The recorded version of ‘My Number’ is every much a delight as one could hope for. Haunting echoes tear through the punchy sounds of, ‘Providence’, whilst ‘Moon’ creeps along to a beautiful arrangement of crystal-like keys, intertwined with singer, Yannis Philippakis’ solemn vocals and guitar picking. Holy Fire is a testimony to one of the most exciting and alluring bands around. It’s due to be released on 13th February 2012 via Transgressive Records, so be sure to make a note in your diary folks, Foals are back!

FUNNY NEWS We’ll Get Off Here Thanks There are some things you just don’t do in certain countries. In Thailand, for example, you never take a local chick home without checking for an Adam’s apple; while in Scotland it’s socially unacceptable to eat something that hasn’t been deep fried beforehand. Well now a big-titted British woman has discovered one of the things you shouldn’t do while you’re in Dubai - namely getting fucked in the back of a taxi by your Irish lover. Becky Blake, 29, says she was drunk at the time and can’t remember a thing. But the police officer who arrested her certainly can. Apparently she was naked and astride her man on the back seat of the cab when the cop caught her after being tipped off by the disgusted driver. She’s now facing three months in jail.
The Naked Truth Hey fellas, ever wanted to know what that hot girl in the flat across the road looks like naked? Or ever wanted to see what your girlfriend’s best friend looks like with three penises inside her while she rubs her breasts?
Well now, thanks to the miracle of the internet (which is surely God’s greatest creation) you can. Two porn websites are using facial-recognition technology to match user-submitted photos of people to porn stars. “We think [facial] matching is the future and we stand behind it,” Naughty America chief executive officer Eddie Arenas said. “What we’ve developed is a system where users can visually show us exactly what they want and then see similar images.” But don’t rush out to buy burkhas just yet ladies. Users seem to be pretty disappointed with the results with the “technology” seemingly only able to match hair colour. Bah.
Things That Go Hump In The Night They say that beauty is only skin deep, so a round of applause for a 37-year-old Swedish woman who was so inspired by that piece of wisdom that she’s started banging skeletons. The skull shagger is suspected of using 100 parts, which included six skulls and one backbone, in “sexual situations” and was charged with violating the peace of the deceased. Talk about getting a boner.
@
The Goeteborgsposten newspaper (which sounds like a made up name to us) alleged that she wrote on an internet forum a few years ago: “My morals set my limits and I’m prepared to take the punishment if something should happen. “It’s worth it. I want my man like he is, whether he is dead or alive. He allows me to find sexual happiness on the side.” Police also found CDs titled ‘My Necrophilia’ and ‘My first experience,’ as well as photos in which a woman is seen kissing and hugging the skulls. It is unclear if she also had posters of her favourite TV hunk, Skeletor from He-Man, hanging from her bedroom walls. The woman, who has admitted that the items were kept in her apartment but denies doing anything wrong, was arrested in September and faces up to two years in jail if found guilty. She also sold three skulls and a spine to a person in Uppsala earlier this year, prosecutors said. “Some of the photos show a woman licking a skull,” prosecutor Kristina Ehrenborg-Staffas told The Local newspaper in Sweden. “We claim it’s her, but she claims it’s someone else and she found the pictures on the internet.” It all sounds pretty damning to us, but one thing doesn’t add up. If she really wants to shag a skeleton, why didn’t she start a lesbian relationship with Calista Flockhart?

football match on his smartphone while driving two undercover council officials to a hotel. He also overcharged them.
Porn-again Christians A Chiristian couple in their 70s who go to church every Sunday have been handed a bill of over £500 for watching an average of 12 hours porn a day. Even BBM doesn’t get through that much, and let’s just say that Sunday isn’t exactly a day of rest for our right hand. Ann, 71, and Ron Hayward, 74, said that they were “disgusted” by Virgin Media’s extortionate usage charges for what they label an “Additional Feature (18)”. Baffled Ann, a retired nursery nurse, said: “I think that kind of thing is disgusting, I am 71 and they said to me, ‘Where were you at 2am?’ “I said, ‘Well I wasn’t out clubbing it was I? And I was hardly sat in my front room watching porn.’ I have been married since I was 18 - we have no interest in that kind of thing I can assure you.” We’re sure YOU haven’t got an interest in it Ann, but it’s strange how your husband’s so quiet about all this.
Driven To Insanity Taxi drivers in Australia aren’t really a helpful bunch. Whether they’re refusing to give you change for a $50 note from a $38 trip to the airport, or deliberately taking the route through the city with the most traffic lights, they seem to delight in screwing over their passengers as much as possible. Well now we bring you two tales of taxi drivers that show them at their best, and their worst. In the case of Singapore cabbie Sia Ka Tian, the 70-year-old driver deserves a round of applause after finding no less than $900,000 in the back of his taxi – and taking it straight to the police to return to the couple who left it there. And when we say “couple” we actually mean “pair of twats with more money than sense”. “When I saw the money, I thought, trouble is here. I was sure there was at least $200,000 in the bag,” he said. “The money is unimportant to me. It doesn’t belong to me, so how can I use it?” Well done sir, you’ve more than earned your $5 tip for throwing away a chance to retire instead of transporting rich idiots around town for the rest of your life. And now for another tale of cabbie idiocy, only it’s a little closer to home this time, with news that a taxi driver from Loughborough watched a
Going Up
“Our officers were stunned when this taxi driver decided that watching the big match was more important than the safety of his passengers,” said Jane Hunt, Charnwood Borough Council’s cabinet member for regulatory services. To be fair, if we had two council workers in the back of our car, we’d try and scare the shit out of them too.

A Hairy Situation
Michael Fassbender
There are some areas in the world that will always have an aura of mystique and an air of the supernatural. From vampires to sea monsters, places like Transylvania, the Bermuda Triangle and Loch Ness will always be associated with mystery and the unknown. Well now another town can be added to the X-Files-style list of places guaranteed to send a chill down your spine as soon as you mention their name. We’re talking, of course, about Tunbridge Wells. Apparently an eight-foot tall apeman with demonic, red eyes has been spotted sloping around the Kentish town’s 200-acre common several times in the past month. Police have investigated, but when they discovered that Susan Boyle wasn’t touring in the area they were at a loss to explain the sightings. According to local community website Tunbridge Wells People, the Kentish Apeman - or British Bigfoot - was first seen 70 years ago during World War Two, but has “now returned”. Sounds like a job for Scooby Doo to us. The website states that the last sighting took place just three weeks ago on the edge of the woods when the “beast” roared, scaring off a man walking home through the woods. “The Kentish Apeman has recently been spotted on Tunbridge Wells Common - the exact spot where it was also apparently seen 70 years ago,” the website says. “The beast is reportedly eightfoot tall, has red demonic eyes and is covered in hair.” BBM experienced something much worse a few years ago when we visited a town in Durham and found ourselves surrounded by gibbering ape-like creatures making unintelligible noises. Luckily, it turned out to be a group of Newcastle supporters on their way to the game, but we still get goosebumps thinking about it.
We’re so excited for the long-awaited fifth series of Peepshow to air… it better be good.
We love the Fassbender for giving us a fun word we can use as an insult.
Tom Hardy
We’ve decided this dude is completely underrated and is a national treasure that should be celebrated.
Nadine Coyle
Girls Aloud are back and we reckon Nadine is looking fitter than Cheryl these days.
Kristen Stewart
Enough already, she’s not even fit, she’s got weird ears and a funny mouth, and R-Patz is way too good for her.
Helen Flannagan
The Corrie star sucks at being in I’m a Celeb, so please can we hurry up and just stick her straight in the lads mags with her chuff out already…that is what she’s aiming for right?

SPORTS NEWS at the start of his reign. If BBM were a more cynical magazine, it might all look a little bit pre-planned. We might even go as far to suggest that the whole Beckham thing had been leaked by Gallop in the most brazen attempt to grab headlines with an outlandish statement since racist Chelsea revealed that Nelson Mandela had been in the running to replace Roberto di Matteo as manager.
Managing Expectations How we all laughed when that bloke applied for the Middlesbrough job on the strength of his experience playing Championship Manager and got a tongue-in-cheek response from chairman Steve Gibson.
Bhoys In Da Hood It’s less about the players and more about the playaz at Celtic these days with news that the Doggfather himself wants to own a share of the club. And we’re not talking about Scooby Doo. Yes Snoop Doggy Dogg (Snoop Lion as he’s started calling himself since realising a lovable cartoon dog doesn’t inspire fear like a gangster name should), has decided he wants a slice of the shizzle at soon-to-be 2012-13 SPL champions Celtic. “I got a lot of interest in soccer … [and] I see how passionate Celtic fans are about their team,” said Snoop, the man responsible for making the word “pimp” a verb. “The boxes at Celtic would never be the same once I have hosted a party there.” Snoop also vowed to speak to David Beckham about joining the Glasgow club. “We have lunch when we can, so next time, you know, I am going to speak to him about it,” he said as he popped caps in the asses of some mofos. “LA is home for him and his family now – but I would have to at least make that offer to my boy … Never say never.” We’re pretty sure Celtic fans aren’t putting too much stock into the prospect of Snoop taking charge. For starters, Mr Lion is notoriously prolific with the opposite sex - and rarely shy about saying so - and seems to take a similar approach to sporting fidelity. Over the years, he’s been photographed wearing the team kits of Ajax, Manchester United, Liverpool, Cardiff City, Brighton, Barcelona, QPR, Birmingham City, Juventus, Chivas, Spain and Croatia. We’re pretty confident he’ll chuck on a Rangers top the next time he’s in a blue kind of mood. “I don’t need to run a soccer club but [I would want] enough of a percentage to get me on the board so I can be heard,” he said, although we get the feeling he’s more used to dealing in fractions than percentages. It has not been confirmed, but it is thought Snoop forgot who Celtic were a few hours later when the effects of his bong wore off.

How we all LOL’d and ROFL’d when hundreds of people applied for the Dumbarton job on the basis of their prowess playing FIFA 12. Well the nerds have had the last laugh with news that a 21-year-old student from Sweden has landed a coaching job as manager of Azerbaijan side FC Baku’s ‘A’ team on the strength of his PC-based Football Manager achievements. Who’s ROFLing now? Certainly not France legend JeanPierre Papin, who was reportedly interested in the post but was beaten to it by Vugar Huseynzade - a man whose only experience of managing a team is on his computer. Yet that devotion to the virtual game - along with some work experience stint with a sports agency in the USA - were apparently enough to land him the job. “I’ve always wanted to work in football and have played Football Manager since 2002,” Huseynzade told a sniggering reporter from Scandinavian newspaper Aftonbladet. Azerbaijan-born Huseynzade took over the job - equivalent to reserve team manager - after previous incumbent Kamran Ismayilov left by mutual consent after more than two years. It remains to be seen whether signing players who would never normally consider coming to the club will work in the real world, or whether the team will accept his work of ethic of playing an entire season in one night. Still good luck to the nerdy tit, maybe one day he’ll even get to have actual sex with a girl by making a CV to show how much porn he’s watched online
legs for when he’s in a threeway. Well it sounds like he needs ‘baseball bat’ legs now with the news he threatened to break a man’s legs (oh the irony) after finding out his girlfriend had slept with another bloke while he was at the London Olympics. Apparently, Pistorius was said to be involved in a furious spat with TV producer Quinton van der Burgh over his relationship with the unnamed 18-year-old girl, with a public exchange in a VIP box at the Kylami motor racing circuit becoming so heated that a charged of defamation was laid against Pistorius. Several other men apparently got dragged in to the argument as it escalated via SMS message in later weeks, among them coal mining millionaire Clifton Shores and football star-turned-TV presenter Marc Batchelor. As the legless wonder’s fury grew, so too did the threats, with Batchelor apparently on the receiving end of the “I’ll break your legs” insult. Clearly Pistorius wasn’t thinking straight to come up with such a bad idea, otherwise he would have realised that breaking the legs of another athlete would only increase the competition at the next Paralympics. Pistorius refused to comment on the matter, while Van der Burgh said the girl at the centre of the controversy “is not [Pistorius’s] girlfriend” and admitted that he was “scared for his life”. Which is not surprising really as we imagine having Pistorius come after you is a bit like being chased by the bad robot in Terminator 2 when his arms are big blades of metal.

What’s this? Rumours of David Beckham moving to the A-League? Good heavens. And what’s that you say? Football Federation Australia have hired a new chief executive, David Gallop, looking to boost the game’s profile Down Under in the same week. Well that is quite a coincidence, lucky old Gallop eh? Stroke of good fortune all these Beckham back pages coming right
So despite the fact Beckham’s people have categorically stated that he has “no interest” in a move to Australia, we keep getting headlines about how five A-League clubs are in the running to sign the aging cross-master. “It’s wonderful that David Beckham is thinking about the A-League as a potential destination,” Gallop said. “It’s another sign of how much the A-League has grown in stature on a global basis. Beckham is a superstar on the world stage and Australian audiences have loved his visits here with the LA Galaxy.”
Just to reiterate, Beckham has said rumours of a move to the A-League are “definitely not true”. But why douse the flames of media hype when good old fashioned hyperbole will grab more column inches. Of course the real question, which nobody seems to be asking, is why the hell would any club want him? We’re not denying his talent, you hardly need pace to whip in a free kick, but Alessandro del Piero is twice the player Beckham yet look at Sydney FC. One great player doesn’t make a shit team good. Bats, Balls, and...um, Horses: Boxing Day Sport 2012 t’s the day after Christmas: the presents have been opened, the leftovers are in the fridge, and the whole family is sitting in front of the TV by a roaring fire. Christ it’s a horrible thought, isn’t it? It’s fortunate that on Boxing Day there’s traditionally a bundle of sport to break the monotony and drown out another rambling rant about immigrants from your slightly racist Granny.
Owen’s next injury.) Now it’s harder to gamble away the money you get for Christmas, because Aunties and Uncles the world over think iTunes vouchers are acceptable presents, but you wouldn’t be the resilient people you are if you couldn’t get something together to piss away on tiny men riding animals.
For starters, Boxing Day is an important event in the footballing calendar, with positions in and around the relegation zone at Christmas time providing a good barometer of who’ll stay up and who’ll go down. Old timers fondly remember watching the games being played on a slightly frosty pitch by portly men with thin wispy hair, saying it had a special sort of atmosphere; but nowadays it’s a bit different thanks in large part to under soil heating making the pitch playable, and an improvement in hair products. Though it is still a much loved day of fixtures providing the highs and lows of football, but heightened thanks to post-turkey euphoria.
Last but not least is cricket, with the annual Australia Boxing Day test match. This year the touring team is Sri Lanka, and they’re surely looking to be the next side to piss on Australia. (Remember when they were good? It seems so long ago…) There’s also the International Twenty20 match between South Africa and New Zealand to keep you occupied during those long hours as you ponder why anyone cares so little about you that they gave you iTunes vouchers for Christmas.
And then there’s horse racing. I won’t pretend to know much about horse racing (it would be wrong to bullshit you sexy and intelligent readers), but what I do know is that it may be the only sport where an injured participant gets shot. (Though we are hoping this is the treatment for Michael

CRYSTAL BALLS
Horoscopes
frigging awesome. You ever seen the film Saw? Well watching your life in December was like that only in 3D. So awesome. Pretty gruesome for you though. Can’t believe you managed to cut right through the bone. I didn’t think you had it in you. Still, it’s all pointless because he brutally murders you anyway. Riveting stuff.
Scorpio
So he slept with your mentallyretarded sister, is it really worth cutting off his genitals with a kitchen knife while he’s asleep? My advice is to go on Jeremy Kyle. It’s where you manky scutters belong.
Capricorn
Sorry Capricorn but I’m rushing off to watch the new Bond movie so won’t have time to do your horoscope. I guarantee it wouldn’t have been interesting anyway, you’re pretty much the most boring star sign there is. Get a life loser.
Virgo
Aries
For the love of Christ will you give your pubic hair a trim. Every time I look into my crystal ball it’s like delving into the Amazon Rainforest, it’s like Terry Waite’s garden down there. Only instead of monkeys swinging from vine to vine it’s crabs. You’ll probably need a machete.
Taurus
A wise man once said: “Love will Taurus apart, again.” That man’s name was Ian Curtis, and if memory serves he went on to live a long and fulfilling life. Heed his happy words my friend because this month love will literally tear you apart when a Hispanic man with an eight-inch cock shoves his manhood up your poo chute leaving your rectum needing 16 stitches. Our advice is to eat eggs and various other foodstuffs that make you constipated, because wiping your arse for the next month or so is gonna feel like dragging a cheese grater across your anus.
Libra
Libra you filthy sod. This month you end up contracting Tetanus due to your attraction to rusty spoons and your penchant for pokey bum wanks. Head straight to go and collect $200.
44 www.bbmlive.com
Gemini
Crystal has a very bad hangover. Either grab me a bucket or fuck off.
Sagittarius
There’s bugger all on telly tonight so I may as well do your horoscope. Jesus it’s like watching paint dry. Oh wait, what’s this? Hmmm. Well this is interesting. Looks like someone’s gone to a lot of trouble for your Christmas present this year. Inside one of the boxes under the tree is the severed head of multiple Oscarwinning actress Meryl Streep. What an unusual present. Still, it’s the thought that counts.
Leo
Bloody hell. An electrical storm is playing havoc with my crystal ball this month and every time I try to tune into your horoscope I get an old episode of Neighbours instead. Consequently, I don’t know how accurate this reading is but apparently everyone on your street is involved in a horrific plane crash that leaves Paul Robinson with one leg.
Cancer
A very exciting few weeks are just around the corner. Not for you though. I’ve just bought a new 3D-vision crystal ball and that meant watching your horoscope this month was
Good and bad news for you this month. The bad news is a drunken fight outside a nightclub goes horribly
wrong and you’re left paralysed from the waist down for the rest of your life after hitting your head on a concrete bollard. The good news is you find a $2 coin on the street. Lucky you!
Aquarius
“Ground beef whiskers for ginger tom. Ground beef whiskers for ginger tom. Take your worming pills and put your flea collar on!” There’s $150 for the first Aquarian reader who can name the band. A copy of your birth certificate will be needed to collect your prize, which can be picked up at BBM’s head office in Mumbai. It’s all about outsourcing people.
Pisces
Your needlessly thrifty ways were bound to catch up with you eventually. There was a reason that mince meat from Coles was reduced by 80 per cent. Letting it sit on your kitchen worktop for a week after its sell by date wasn’t a great idea either. Ever seen a rectal prolapse? Get a mirror and you’ll get a glimpse very soon.
ASK CRYSTAL & JOKES
Ask Crystal Dear Crystal,
I’ve just seen the new Bond movie and it was deadly. Now I’m choking to get a body all buffed up like Daniel Craig so I can go off and shag loads of dead hot birds ‘n that. Any tips? Yours, Jamie
Dear Crystal,
You can get all the muscles and tuxedos you want, it still won’t stop you being a thick twat. My advice is to learn how to speak properly, or aim a little lower with your role models. Todd Carney perhaps, or Peter Andre.
I’m a chemistry teacher with a wife and family, but I’ve just been diagnosed with cancer and don’t have long to live. The thing is, I want to leave them with something, I want to know that they won’t be struggling for money when I’m gone. For that reason, I’ve been thinking about cooking crystal meth. I know the formula, and compared to some of the stuff that’s out there now I know I could do it ten times better. The problem is I don’t know where to start. You’re a woman of the world, do you think you could hook me up with someone who could help me move the product? Yours, Walter
Dear Crystal,
Dear Walter,
Dear Jamie,
Have you seen my glasses? I can’t seem to find them anywhere. Yours, Richard
Dear Richard,
You left them at that brothel in Kings Cross the other night. I wouldn’t bother going back for them. Not after where they’ve been.
Jokes
What should you do if you come across a tiger in the jungle? Wipe it off and apologise profusely. Ashley, Chiswick What does a Scotsman wear under his kilt? On a lucky day, lipstick, Mauro, Greenwich How do you turn a duck into a soul singer? Put it in the Microwave until it’s Bill Withers. Frank, St Kilda Did you hear that famous girl Reese something or other got stabbed to death today? You know the one from legally blonde... Witherspoon? No with a knife. Jonny, Richmond. What do you call a man that’s just been mauled by a tiger? Claude. Jim, Bondi There are two snowmen in a field, one says to the other ‘can you smell carrot?’ Jo, Fitzroy How much does a hipster weigh? An instagram, Ben, Surry Hills What do gay horses eat? HAAAAAAAY, Robin,
Manly
Did you hear about the blonde skydiver? Pulled the wrong string and bleed to death. Lucy, Woolloomooloo
Well aren’t you a cool customer. It just so happens that I do have an, erm, friend of a friend who may be able you out, although obviously I can’t give you her name. All I’ll say is she’s a disgruntled agony aunt with a penchant for sexual promiscuity and illegal drugs. I’ll be in touch. I mean, SHE’LL be in touch. The friend of a friend I mean. Who is definitely not me.
A lady pays £1000 for a penis skin handbag...her friend says “that’s expensive for just a handbag” she replies “not really, if u stroke it turns into a suitcase” Miranda, Kings Cross Two peanuts were walking through a park. One was assaulted. Pip, Darlinghurst What’s worse than finding a fly in your soup? That it’s undone and there’s a cock inside! Tommy, Newcastle A bra and a set of jump leads walk into a bar. The bra walks up to the counter & says “I’ll have two beers”. The bartender says “I can’t serve you mate. The bra says “What are you talking about? We only just got here”. The bartender replies “Yeah but your off you tits & you mate looks like he’s about to start something!” Tim, Fremantle
Dear Crystal,
Hey it’s me again, I still can’t find them. And before you do the brothel joke again I haven’t been to any brothels recently, so look into your tea leaves or whatever it is you do and find them for me. Yours, Richard
Dear Richard, Piss off. Yours, Crystal
Dear Crystal,
I keep getting calls from some old woman heavily breathing down the phone and telling me she can see everything I’m doing. Is it you by any chance? Yours, Phil
Dear Phil,
Are you that sexy ginger guy who works at Supre? If so, I don’t think you should wear so much at home, that way I’ll be able to help you find out who’s making those calls to you. Yours, Crystal
The little girl says, “I’m scared.” The pedophile replies, “You’re scared? I have to walk home on my own.” Nicholas, Richmond Imagine how many people are going to commit suicide next month, simply because they believe the world will really end. On a related note: Imagine how much higher the world’s average IQ will be come January. Ruth, Brunswick 1 in 10 mates are hated by the other 9. I can’t wait to find out who it is when the boys come back from their lads’ holiday. Aaron, St Kilda I always find the women when they’re hot and I leave them wet. I love being a fireman. Kieran, Fremantle
What’s the difference between Amy Winehouse and Jeremy Clarkson? Jeremy Clarkson still does top gear. Grant, Melbourne My girlfriend caught me blow-drying my penis and asked what was I doing… apparently “heating up your dinner” was not the right answer! Tom, Clovelly A man came round in hospital after a serious accident. He shouted, “Doctor, doctor, I can’t feel my legs!” The doctor replied, “I know you can’t, I’ve cut your arms off”. Lou, Brunswick A pedophile walks into the woods with a little girl.

RECRUITMENT NEWS
Reality Check... So you want to stay in Australia huh? Good on yer. As Christmas approaches it is not a particularly difficult decision. While the land down under sneaks into summer, the UK is sloping into the cold, wilderness of winter which makes those Skype sessions feel all the more smug. Then there is a list of all-year round benefits; from the easy-going lifestyle to the comparatively fruitful economy. Sounds marvellous doesn’t it - hence why so many decide they would rather remain than return home. However, despite the vast open spaces, not everyone can be accommodated in Australia. Like any economy, there are only so many jobs to go around and only so many skilled people to do them. It is a classic case of supply and demand that means you have to prove your worth to the locals. Put bluntly, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship can effectively choose who they want to remain. For you to stay means knuckling down and perhaps putting yourself in positions you would not necessarily choose to be. If you have already spent over a year here you may know the sacrifices to secure a second year Working Holiday visa; namely the 88 days regional work. Whether paid or unpaid the commitment will put you in good stead for trying to secure that residency. As Cheryl Cole tries to sing, “if it’s worth having, it’s worth fighting for” and residency in Australia is certainly worth fighting for. For starters, to gain residency you are going to need a job. This sounds simple enough yet with the picky Department of Immigration and Citizenship at work the decision to remain could rest on considering roles that you would not necessarily apply for. Alas, however impressive you may think you are at your chosen profession, if the demand is already satisfied then other avenues will have to be sought. Consider it as a long-term adventure and be prepared to allow yourself a couple of years to get there. Now here comes the useful information so pay attention. There are jobs that will be looked upon favourably, jobs that are already brimming with British talent. Jobs that come with a Temporary Business (Long Stay) - Standard Business Sponsorship (Subclass 457) visa. With this visa you can work in Australia for up to four years and apply for permanent residency after only two. One such position is Recruitment Consultant which seems kinda ironic, but they you go. Another position that achieves brownie points is that of Sales Representative. Perhaps us Poms have the gift of the gab or that certain je ne sais quoi to guarantee goods exchanged for hard earned cash. Similarly, if you can claim the title of Marketing Specialist then you are in luck as that is on the list too.

Of course, the job itself is of prime importance; yet consider the location, location, location! Like moths to a flame, few can be blamed for heading to the bright lights of Sydney and Melbourne. Yet the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (yes, them again) would much prefer you fill a few other, less popular spaces. For anyone that has seen Wolf Creek, do not fear, it will not be that empty. If you do decide to apply for a Skilled - Regional Sponsored (Provisional) visa the single thing you need to consider is if the area you could work in is classed as a specified regional area. Thankfully that definition can be snapped into two parts. Firstly, if you are nominated to perform a job by a participating state or territory government, you must agree to live in Regional Australia or a low population growth metropolitan area. This basically excludes all major cities and surrounding areas so you can forget Melbourne and Perth. For the state of Queensland both Brisbane and the Gold Coast are excluded while Sydney, Newcastle, the Central Coast and Woollongong are all excluded in New South Wales. However, if you are lucky enough to have a family member who is an Australian citizen then things become a little easier. They can sponsor you too, so long as they reside in a Designated area of Australia at the time of the sponsorship. Contrary to the specified regional areas, only certain areas in Queensland and New South Wales are excluded including, predictably, the good spots such as Brisbane, Sydney, Newcastle and Woollongong. Heading to destinations unknown can seem daunting yet to the locals your arrival could prove to be a godsend. In several cases, the friendliness of the local community and the blissful solitude can make life a whole lot easier. For the town that needs an electrician or the office that could do with a sales genius, if you are filling a void that could be key to gaining residency. If that job is featured on the Skilled Occupation List then you could get yourself the Skilled – Regional Sponsored (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 475) which is a three year provisional points based visa for skilled workers. For instance, points are awarded on such criteria as age (being between 18 and 40 gains the most), English language ability and skills.
Failing that then there is another option. Then there is the points-based Skilled - Nominated or Sponsored (Provisional) (subclass 489) visa which is for skilled workers who are nominated by a state or territory or sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated area in Australia. Unlike the two previous visas, this one is valid for four years but applications are by invite only. That includes having a job on the Skilled Occupation List and a suitable skills assessment. To apply you need to submit an Expression of Interest outlining your skills and experience through SkillSelect which can even be done overseas. If you have been sponsored on a subclass 457 visa there is the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) to consider, specifically The Temporary Residence Transition stream. Should your employer be suitably impressed by your graft over the past two years then they may be ready to offer you a permanent position. Huzzah. Gaining permanent residency in Australia is not just complicated but a commitment. You may not get to do your dream job and you may have to live in a regional area of Australia away from all the trappings you have grown to adore.
