Don’t miss out on the number one thing to do in Sydney. If there’s one thing that tops everything in Sydney, it’s experiencing your very first BridgeClimb. Nothing beats standing above the city, looking out over the harbour, the skyscrapers and beyond, on top of this great steel structure. For Sydney may be famous for its weather, the Opera House, the beaches and the start of an Australian adventure, but the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the climb to the top encapsulates all of this and more, which is why it ranks as the number one thing to do in the city. There are climbs throughout the day, beginning at dawn and going all the way to night time, so that you can look down upon Sydney at a time that suits you. Take in the pinkish tint of the clouds as the sun rises, bask in the bright blue sky during the day, and watch the city twinkle beneath a blanket of darkness come nightfall. Seeing the many faces of Sydney change from dawn to dusk is just one of the reasons why many do BridgeClimb more than once.
Lasting around three hours, your BridgeClimb adventure begins as soon as you step through the door of the Climb Base. With the Visitor Centre & Cinema, you can find out more about the history, preservation and celebration of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, before you embark on your climb. Joined by a Climb Leader and no more than 14 in a group, you’re kitted out with all of the gear that you’ll need to stay safe while on the bridge, so all you need is your sunglasses, a pair of comfortable shoes and a sense of adventure! While you might want to take photos of the spectacular view, you can’t take your camera on the climb with you. But don’t worry – your Climb Leader takes loads of photos that you can purchase later.
proposal, to its opening in 1932 and its importance in local celebrations. If you want to take a memento from your BridgeClimb Sydney experience, the shop is full of special keepsakes and souvenirs including mugs, hoodies, cute climber bears and even crocodile jerky.
The climb itself involves 1,332 steps, each one getting you closer and closer to the summit as you ascend the arches of the bridge. Finally, you reach the top, 134m above sea level, and are rewarded with stunning views of one of the most beautiful harbours in one of the most iconic cities in the world. Pose for your group photo and soak up the uninterrupted panoramic before your very eyes. During the entire climb, your Climb Leader will be able to educate and entertain with facts and stories about the bridge, from the very first

Fremantle Prison Bringing History to Life
The most unique of all the tours on offer is the underground Tunnels Tour. Those with a spirit for adventure can explore a one kilometre labyrinth of tunnels built by prisoners which run under the Prison. Equipped with hardhat, overalls, boots, headlamps and harnesses visitors are locked into the ladder system before descending 20 metres into the depths below. Skilled guides lead the trek through dry sections of the tunnels by foot, before boarding replica convict punts to explore the submerged passageways accessible only by boat.
Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier visitor attractions and is the only World Heritage listed building in Western Australia. In 2015 Fremantle Prison was announced as the winner of both the Major Tourist Attractions and Cultural Tourism categories at the WA Tourism Awards.
In addition to its guided tours Fremantle Prison also features exhibitions in the Prison Gallery, interpretive Visitor Centres and an award winning Gift Shop. You can find more information on this heritage jewel by visiting
www.fremantleprison.com.au
Built by convicts in the 1850s, Fremantle Prison was used as a place of incarceration for almost 140 years. Decommissioned as an operating maximum security gaol in 1991, the empty prison with its solitary cells and gallows now welcomes ‘inmates’ of a different kind – tourists. Visitors can ‘step inside and do time’ with Fremantle Prison’s experienced guides on a range of tours that vary from pure history, to heritage adventure. On Prison Day tours visitors can learn about the daily life of convicts and prisoners alike. Featuring cells, yards, solitary confinement and an opportunity to view a once operational gallows these tours are perfect if you are interested in history or heritage. For a more spooky experience you can’t go past an eerie Torchlight Tour as tour guides delve into the darker side of the Prison’s history.

Expat Interview:
From Suffolk to Sydney WITH ALEX MILLS With new friends, job opportunities and even supporting the local footy team, Alex Mills fills us in on his new life Down Under. Where are you currently living? Sydney (specifically Bondi Beach – like all the Brits!) in a flat share halfway between the beach and the junction, so the best of both worlds. What inspired you to go to Australia? Australia was always on the bucket list of places I needed to visit, but there was always a reason not to – I was either in a band about to release a record, had a relationship commitment, studying a masters – many reasons which were legitimate ones at the time. But this year I turned 30, and a few things happened to me to review my life situation. I reached a point where I knew it was now or never due to the restrictions of getting a Working Holiday Visa after you turn 31. So I decided to take a leap of faith, get out of my comfort zone, live and work abroad and see what happens. Scary, reckless, illogical but the best decision I ever made.
my industry so that I could hit the ground running and get networking immediately, but I wanted to maintain a level of flexibility and challenge myself to find my feet rather than have everything lined up for me. What job did you do back in the UK? My background is in digital marketing – content strategy, project management and social media. I am looking to remain in the digital marketing industry – a field where British candidates are highly sought after – and this should hopefully get me a more senior role than I might have got back home. I have fortunately landed a short-term contract at an agency for the next few weeks and we’ll see what happens longer term. I’m keeping myself flexible as I’m still so new here. The market is really starting to grow in Australia and it’s a really exciting time. Will you travel? Yes, but not backpacking as such, just ad-hoc trips – much like the way Londoners may book a few mini breaks in other European cities.
Did you arrive with a plan? To an extent. I booked a few nights’ accommodation in different parts of Sydney to get a feel for each area and where I felt I would like to live. I also had Skype calls with recruiters in 20
www.bbmlive.com
What experiences have you had in Australia so far? Spending Christmas Day on the beach was unbelievable fun – it felt like a big music festival! I have also been to see Sydney FC twice already, I’ve seen the main tourist spots in Sydney but also the Blue Mountains, Royal National Park and Palm Beach – I’ve already mastered surfing too! Well, not quite, but I can stand on a board.

WHAT’S IT LIKE NURSING IN AUSTRALIA? Meet four nurses from Europe who have been nursing and travelling around Australia. Find out more about their experiences of nursing Down Under and how you could benefit from nursing in Oz with Healthcare Australia (HCA).
Rhiannon Biss (RB) Respiratory Medicine
Liam Caswell (LC) Intensive Care
What inspired your decision to come to Australia? RB: I first came to Australia 10 years ago to travel the East Coast but didn’t do everything I wanted to, so I decided to come back to live and nurse out here. LC: I’ve always had a desire to move to Australia, to experience the lifestyle and travel this wonderful country. Plus my other half is Australian so that spurred me along! GH: I was really curious about what Australia had to offer in terms of career and personal life so I thought I would see what happens! LG: Fortunately as nurses we have the best job ever if we want to travel! I was working and travelling in the UK (I’m from Italy) when some friends suggested Australia so I thought I’d check it out! How did HCA help turn the dream into a reality? LG: HCA have been great – they helped with everything from the registration process to getting a job and even accommodation! They were in touch with me every step of the way, which was comforting when making the decision to come out here! GH: When I first got in touch with HCA I had no idea what I was doing. It was kind of a terrifying experience – packing up your entire life to move to the other side of the world! But HCA were really supportive; they helped throughout the whole process, from my visa to my AHPRA registration. How have you found working as an agency nurse with HCA? RB: I love working for the agency so much! It’s flexible, the hours suit me so I’m just happy doing
Linda Gustini (LG) Scrub
Grant Howley (GH) Mental Health
what I’m doing! I’ve been working in the same hospital, which has been really nice as I’m getting to know more people, making friends and building up a team. LC: They’ve been fantastic so far. I arrived in Sydney without my AHPRA registration confirmed and HCA were on hand to speed up the process as well as providing me with work as soon as I got my registration. GH: Me too, I arrived in Australia without my registration and they set me up with some work as an Assistant in Nursing (AIN) to tide me over. Since then it’s been great – there’s been no shortage of shifts as a Mental Health Nurse so I’ve made plenty of money to live on and to be able to travel around Australia as well. How has working with HCA helped you travel during your time in Australia? LG: It’s been really flexible, I can decide when I want to work and when I want to take time off, so if something fun comes up, I can change things around and go rather than miss out! I’ve also been able to make enough money in Australia to support myself and save, so I’ve seen pretty much the whole country in one year and I’ve done all the things I wanted! GH: You have the flexibility to go off for a few weeks if you want to which is great for travelling. Also, if you’re saving up, there’s always the opportunity to work more shifts which is brilliant. HCA has agencies in all of the states so you can also choose to travel interstate and work whilst you are there. RB: Yeah, it’s great. I can just book off the weekend or a few days and go away with my friends. I’ve also saved quite a bit to go abroad on a few holidays. If you want to backpacking

around Australia, you can easily pick up shifts wherever you go! LC: Being an agency nurse in Australia has allowed me to fund fantastic adventures whilst I have been living here. Being able to work and travel is a great advantage that nurses have with HCA. So I tend to work a couple of weeks and then I have a couple of weeks holiday and I get to tick another thing off my bucket list! Aside from travelling, what other benefits have you found working for HCA? LC: HCA really allows you to be as flexible as you would like to be and that’s been real key for me living in Australia. It’s really allowed me to follow my hobbies and my passions. RB: I like that it’s so easy to book shifts. With the App, I can say when I’m available – simple! It suits me because a lot of my friends work 9-5 so I like to have the weekends off to spend time with them and see more of Sydney on the weekends. GH: I’ve also found it’s been really good working with HCA as it’s given me the opportunity to work in different hospitals across the city. It’s helped me decide where I want to settle by seeing different areas and working with different teams. How has nursing in Australia developed your skills and experience as a nurse? GH: It’s given me the opportunity to work in a variety of different environments and learn new skills. I did a two-month placement in Bourke, north NSW as a Community Psychiatric Nurse where I could develop really positive therapeutic relationships with the people I was working with. As I hadn’t had much community experience, working with a diverse population was professionally challenging and a great new experience for me. RB: I feel like I have learnt so much coming to work in Australia, because I go to all different wards, all different departments. The hospital I’m currently working at has actually sent me to the emergency department a few times and I’ve absolutely loved that! It’s an experience that I don’t know if I would have got back home. How have you found fitting into the Australian way of life? LC: Australia’s a fantastic place to live. The culture here – the work culture especially – is very laid back and flexible; and the people are lovely and always willing to help. It’s been pretty easy fitting into the Australian health care system; a lot of it is very similar to the UK and I’ve not had any problems at all making friends or fitting in with the Australian nurses. 22
www.bbmlive.com
GH: Everyone in the UK says Australians take their down time really seriously – I had no idea until I came here! Everyone’s really friendly and I’ve met quite a lot of friends through HCA. I think there is definitely a better work-life balance over here than there is in England. I really try to make the most of my time off! RB: As I’ve been travelling around Australia before, when I got here I knew I wanted to stay in one place and it’s great as I’m living in a really hip part of town and I’ve been working at the same hospital for a while now so they recognise me. I have been trying to make the most of the Aussie way of life and enjoy my down time as technically I’m still on a working-holiday so I need to holiday as well as work! What advice would you give to other overseas nurses thinking of nursing whilst in Oz? LC: I would say give it a go! Don’t wait any longer! It’s definitely worthwhile, even if it’s just temporary whilst you are on your Working Holiday Visa. It’s definitely worth a try – it’s a fantastic experience, and it’s given me some great opportunities to develop my nursing skills whilst seeing this beautiful country! RB: Don’t stress – that’s the Aussie way of life! It can be quite daunting nursing in a different country, but HCA is amazing and they are always helpful. Also, you can spot other HCA nurses by their purple shirts, which is lovely as you know you are in the same boat! LG: Yeah, it’s a little bit daunting, because you’re nursing in a different country and you don’t know what the work culture is going to be like, but Australian nurses are very welcoming and so helpful. At the end of the day, you are just doing what you did at home – you’re a nurse no matter what! So relax, calm down, and enjoy travelling, meeting people and having fun! GH: Do it! I took a big chance to come out here – it was a tough decision to leave a good stable job at home but it’s been worth it! Also, I would recommend you do a rural placement whilst you are here. It was such a good experience to live and work somewhere you might not otherwise get the chance to – it’s a fantastic opportunity to try something new! You won’t regret it! Discover more in HCA’s latest video ‘What’s it like nursing in Australia?’ at www.healthcareaustralia.com.au/nursing-inaustralia and find out how you could get a FREE FLIGHT* to Australia when you work for HCA! *Terms & conditions apply, see the HCA website for details.

According to recruiting experts, Hays, disrupting your CV, being open to freelancing and getting outside your comfort zone to promote yourself online are just three ways to aid your 2016 job search. 1. Disrupt your CV
We’ve all heard of digital disruption, so think about how you could ‘disrupt’ your CV and add a digital element to it. While a traditional CV remains the accepted way to show you have the necessary skills and experience for the role, you could add a link to a website, video or blog post that profiles digital examples of your work or demonstrates your expertise in a particular area. Adding such links at the end of your CV will help you stand out – provided they are relevant to the role you have applied for.
2. Align your online and offline CVs
Hiring managers will research you online, so make sure the CV you submit matches your online profile. Any discrepancies throw up a red flag. At the very least you’ll be asked some hard questions in the interview, and at worst your CV will be removed from consideration. 28

3. Be open to freelancing
Expect the number of contract and temporary assignments to continue to surge ahead. With employers looking for flexible headcounts and jobseekers looking to expand their industry experience and networks, freelancing is an option worth considering.
4. Target realistic jobs
Employers are becoming more impatient with candidates who apply for a role that they are not suitable for. In 2016 it is therefore important to be realistic in the roles you consider, and clearly demonstrate your suitability for a role based upon your experience.
5. Promote yourself
You need to go outside your comfort zone and promote yourself on social media to get ahead in 2016. A LinkedIn account will not be enough if you are not active online – so like, post, share and comment on relevant content, ask for endorsements, be active in relevant groups and showcase examples of your work and achievements. If you would like an informal discussion about the Australian job market, please contact Hays on 1800 805 051 or email globalinkteam@hays.com

Moving To Victoria Once you’ve decided that Australia will be your new home, the next step is to decide where exactly you’d like to live. Many of you will be moving to wherever your career takes you, but some will have freer rein, and with that in mind, may we turn your attentions to Victoria? Victoria’s capital is Melbourne, one of the most liveable cities in the world and home to 70% of Victoria’s inhabitants. And if you will allow us a few more interesting stats, it is said that 30% of Melbourne residents speak a language other than English, proving its worth as a rapidly growing, ethnically-diverse city in which to live. Local areas include Brimbank, Melbourne’s second largest municipality and home to 96 nationalities, and Greater Dandenong which apart from having the best name in Victoria, is also home to a strong industrial hub with nearly 8000 independent businesses thriving in the area. But of course, Victoria isn’t limited to the successes of Melbourne. The north west region of Victoria is famous throughout Australia for its agricultural background with dairy, cattle and sheep farms, wine production and fruit and vegetable processing. Many of the north west’s communities were built on the fortunes made from gold mines, and this is evident in places such as Maryborough who promote their (literally) rich history today.
30
www.bbmlive.com
Then there’s the south east region of Victoria which has dependable rainfall and therefore a healthy line in agriculture, horticulture and fishing. It’s a lush-looking place with more rolling green hills and thick sumptuous woods than one would be used to elsewhere in Oz. In fact it’s got a touch of the English countryside about it – only on a much more epic scale (but then that’s Australia for you). For a truly extravagant experience, we recommend a visit to Drouin with its refined gourmet cuisine and wine production set against heavenly landscapes of assorted greens. Of course, if you’re watching the budget after a fairly expensive relocation Down Under, you’d be wiser looking elsewhere. If you’re a skilled worker, Victoria’s west region would be a much more lucrative prospect because it could mean your eligibility for a Skilled Migration visa, as issued by the Victorian Government. Ballarat is also worth noting in this region because of its high standards of education, exemplified by the outstanding University of Ballarat. There are many more areas of Victoria we haven’t touched upon here but we hope this has given you a flavour of the opportunities and diverse communities you’ll be experiencing were you to spend a wee while exploring this little corner of the country. And should you need any assistance getting there, Seven Seas Worldwide are always on hand with a top-class collection and delivery service, sending excess baggage and personal belongings to and from Victoria, all day, every day.

Get Your RCG To Work In Hospitality
Most Australian states require hospitality staff to have an RCG certificate by law. This is to certify that the holder has undertaken a course in and understands the Responsible Conduct of Gambling.
and South Australia also provide online courses. Meanwhile, Western Australia doesn’t require the RCG at all. As a result, your RCG only applies to the state that it was obtained in e.g. you can’t use your Victoria RCG in New South Wales.
Even if you’re not working in a casino or other gambling venue, chances are you’ll still need to have an RCG due to the amount of poker machines in Australian pubs and hotels. Otherwise known as pokies, this means that you will be around people that are gambling, even if you just work behind the bar in a pub or as security in a hotel.
The RCG works the same way as an RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol). Just like you can’t work in any licensed venue that serves alcohol without an RSA, you can’t work in gambling venues or establishments without getting your RCG. You will not be accepted for a job without one – in many cases it’s the first thing an employer will ask you – so get your RCG as soon as possible.
So, what does the RCG enable you to do? To say that you have an RCG means that you can detect problem gamblers. This includes people that are playing too much, to an extent that it’s effecting their health, lifestyle and finances. How to obtain an RCG differs from state to state. For instance, in New South Wales, you must undertake training in a classroom, while Queensland, Victoria

10 Things You Probably Don't Know About Fraser Island Fraser Island is just one of Australia’s natural wonders that makes it a mustvisit travel destination. Beckoning travellers from all over to its sandy shore, this popular island holds one or two secrets as well as the odd world record breaker… 1. 120km long and 30km wide, Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island. This means that everything quite literally grows out of the sand – including the towering Central Station Rainforest. 2. Lake Boomanjin is one of Fraser Island’s many perched lakes, but at 200 hectares, it’s the largest in the world. 3. Dingoes are not only found in Australia, but Fraser Island dingoes are so pure a breed that domestic dogs aren’t allowed on the island. 4. The name Fraser Island originates from Eliza Fraser, the wife of the captain of Stirling Castle that crashed on the island back in 1836. While stranded for six weeks, they were taken hostage by the local Aboriginals. 5. The indigenous name for Fraser Island is K’gari, meaning paradise.
6. During World War II, Fraser Island was used by Special Operations Australia commandos for secret training. With the jungle and the beach, it was considered the ideal location for a gruelling regime. 7. You can cruise down 75 Mile Beach on a 4WD, but this enormous stretch is not only Fraser Island’s main highway, it’s also the landing strip and airport. 8. There are more than 230 species of bird on Fraser Island including pelicans, white-breasted sea eagles, kingfishers, ospreys, peregrine falcons and the ground parrot. 9. You can watch the migration of humpback whales between the winter months from several lookouts on Fraser Island, but particularly Platypus Bay on the western side sees them relax in the sheltered waters. 10. One of Fraser Island’s most famous lakes, Lake McKenzie, has water so pure that even animals can’t survive in it. T r avel Au s t r alia’s O pen R o ad s Take to the open road and discover Australia’s iconic road trips. Travel the open roads by camper and see Australia through a new lens. A campervan holiday isn’t what you might expect – and that’s the whole point. More surprises, more adventure and more independence result in an unforgettable experience. No matter how much planning is involved, half the fun is expecting the unexpected on the open road – especially when that open road is in Australia. With your hands on the wheel, friends by your side, and new experiences waiting, enjoy the freedom to roam wherever the mood takes you and stay put in a location that you take a considerable liking to. Whether that’s along seemingly endless highways that pass through entire states or enjoying the view of the sunset over the horizon day after day. Take the East Coast drive from Sydney to Cairns, stopping in the seaside towns of Byron Bay and Airlie Beach. You’ll get to know the locals in bars and restaurants, and more than likely change your plans entirely because Greg the barman told you that you’d be mad to end your trip in Cairns without visiting 5 Mile Beach just an hour away in Port Douglas. 48

Don’t forget about the other side of this great island continent; the Coral Coast from Perth to Exmouth is bejewelled with 400-million-year-old gorges, wildlife encounters with dolphins, sea lions and whale sharks, and 260km of the Ningaloo Reef – the largest fringing reef in the world. Then there’s the journey through the centre, the heart of the outback Drive from Adelaide through the Flinders Ranges, up to Alice Springs and onto Darwin along the Stuart Highway, along the way discovering ancient cultures and sprawling rock formations. There are so many beautiful destinations, the hardest choice to make is where and when to go next. But, importantly, the choice is yours when you’re travelling by campervan. So much freedom, fun and flexibility will inevitably form a connection. A connection between you and your fellow campers as you share new experiences, tell stories around a campfire and embrace camping culture together. Feeling inspired, you have the chance to buy Aboriginal arts and crafts from the Cultural Centre, before you travel onwards to the exclusive campsite in Watarrka National Park for another night under the clear, starry sky of the Red Centre. Wattarka National Park is home to Kings Canyon, which is the highlight of your third and final day on your 3-Day Uluru Safari. Discover the Lost City and the Garden of Eden on the hike around Kings Canyon with endless photo opportunities – so make sure you don’t forget your camera! They also do tours in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia and the rest of the Northern Territory.
Quick Facts: Uluru was formed over 600 million years ago. The rock was originally at the bottom of the sea, but today sits 343 meters above ground. There is still a whopping 2.5km of its bulk that exists under ground. Uluru is 3.6km long. It is thought that at one time Uluru and the nearby Kata Tjuta (or Olgas) were one great monolith as opposed to 36 separate rocks, that they are today! It takes around three and a half hours to walk the 10km circumference of the base of the rock. Uluru is roughly 335km from Alice Springs. Book your 3-Day Uluru Safari with Adventure Tours Australia. The Gateway To The Pinnacles A laidback fishing village, Cervantes is just a short trip north from Perth along the Indian Ocean Drive. Besides the beaches, the highlight of Cervantes is without a doubt the Pinnacles. Mysterious, eerie, haunting, a natural wonder – the Pinnacles of Nambung National Park are just one of Western Australia’s incredible rock formations. Limestone spires that jut out of the yellow sand, these may look like they’re more suited to outer space, but the Pinnacles were created over thousands of years from brokendown seashells blown in from the ocean. The Pinnacles now receive over 250,000 visitors per year, drawn by their shadows, colour and sheer number of columns. The Pinnacles Discovery Centre can show you more about the formations with interactive displays, videos and more, but the best experience is undoubtedly on a helicopter flight – you can’t beat this unique perspective of the rocks from the air.

There’s more to Cervantes than just being the gateway to the Pinnacles. Fishing is really popular, especially at Hangover Bay and Kangaroo Point thanks to the offshore reefs. Meanwhile, romantics can enjoy a sunset boat tour with the possibility of being joined by sea lions and dolphins. And if it’s views you’re looking for, Thirsty Point Lookout will reward you after a walk through the sand dunes. Book your stop at The Pinnacles at

Discover The Wild West
From giant karri trees to crashing waves, the south west of Australia presents Mother Nature at her finest. Spend three days exploring the south west region of Western Australia, from the state capital of Perth to the wine region of Margaret River and the beautiful beach of Busselton, and you’ll see that the patchwork quilt of fields, forest and rolling hills are just as spectacular as the north of the city. Heading south through the jarrah forest and sheep farming country, the Stirling Ranges offers a great spot for lunch before a stop at The Porongurups for a breathtaking view from the Castle Rock skywalk. Entering Albany, you can’t miss the sunset from Mt Clarence to end the first day on a high. Begin your second day right on the coast with a stop at the natural wonders of The Gap, Natural Bridge and Blowholes – all of which give the rocky coastline even more character. Heading west, you swap the pounding waves for the calm waters of Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks in William Bay National Park. With turquoise waters to bathe in and rock pools to explore, you could spend hours soaking up the pure beauty of this oasis. Leaving the water’s edge, head into the Valley of the Giants and Ancient Empire, home to a tree top boardwalk 40 metres above the forest floor. Then, why not take on the climb up the fire lookout tree
the world’s second tallest at 72 metres! When you’re back with your feet on the ground, take the journey to Augusta for your second night in the south west. On your third day, begin with a visit to Cape Leeuwin to take in the great sight of where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet, before heading into wine territory. Margaret River is famous for its grapes, producing the finest wine in the west, and you can sample what the region has to offer on a popular wine tour. Margaret River is also a must-visit destination for its caves, of which there are more than 300, and coastal attractions such as Prevelly Beach and Surfers Point. SOUTH AUSTRALIA
SUMMER DAYS ON KANGAROO ISLAND With turquoise waters edging white sand, spend your summer days on Kangaroo Island. This idyllic, picturesque island off the coast of South Australia is basking in sunshine this summer, so it’s the perfect time to visit and explore its natural beauty. The coastline is lined with sandy beaches that beg you to strip down to your bathing suit and sink your feet into, while the ocean beckons swimmers and water sports enthusiasts to head out into the blue. The most famous beaches on Kangaroo Island are so for good reason. Vivonne Bay is a sweeping stretch of sand that’s often regarded as one of the best in Australia. Whether you pack a picnic, lay down a blanket and sit on the beach to escape for a bit; grab a rod and try your chances at a catch; or take to the waves on a surf board – you may find yourself spending hours at Vivonne Bay. Stokes Bay is another area perfect for relaxing, but it’s the journey to get to it that makes it truly memorable.Scramble your way between two rock walls (hold onto any wide-brimmed hats!) and you come to an opening of crystal 60

clear water lapping at clean, white sand. Unlike Vivonne Bay, the water here is incredibly calm as it’s protected by the surrounded rocks. Tranquil and secluded, you’ll be surprised how much of this beach you have to yourself. Another of Kangaroo Island’s coastal hotspots justifies the island’s reputation as a wildlife destination. Seal Bay holds the largest colony of Australian sea lions, and you can watch them play on the beach under the sun and swim in the sea. An 800-metre footpath leads to the beach through striking cliffs and sand dunes, which offers the first view of the adorable sea lions. Even if the ocean isn’t your cup of tea, Kangaroo Island has many things to do for every visitor. From tours of local producers including honey and wool, to rock formations, bushwalking, bike riding and going in search of the unique Kangaroo Island kangaroo, you can be sure to find something that will leave a lasting impression of summer on Kangaroo Island. Discover the Adventures of Laos From the temples of Cambodia to the beaches of Thailand, there are many parts of Southeast Asia that have long been on the tourist trail, but landlocked Laos, with its landscape of mountains, jungles and rolling hills, is where you’ll find true adventure. A multisport tour provides you with the opportunity to experience some of the activities on offer in the natural setting of Laos. With the peaceful rice paddies, local villages and deep countryside, one of the best ways to get around is by bike. When you’re immersed in this landscape, there are a multitude of things you might discover. The town of Vang Vieng, some four hours north of the Laos capital of Vientiane, is one of the most extraordinary cycling destinations with a karst hill landscape. Riding out of town, you can visit hidden caves with secret corridors, wells and underground lakes. Should the combination of cycling and the warm climate make you work up a sweat, you can cool off with a dip in Blue Lagoon before making your way back into the town. After a night’s rest, why not head deeper into the countryside on foot? Depending on the season, you may have to work your way across small streams and rapids using ropes, as you trek further and the terrain gets steeper and steeper. 66
www.bbmlive.com
Along the way, you’ll be met with cascading waterfalls that tumble down the mountain, as well as incredible views as you climb higher and higher. For an authentic night in the jungle, you can sleep under the stars or in a bamboo hut. Waking up within the Laos jungle can no doubt quench your thirst for nature, but nothing can truly make you feel more like Tarzan than a treetop adventure. Zip-lining almost the entire way back down the mountain, you travel from platform to platform (some of them 50 metres high) past towering trees and gushing waterfalls. As a landlocked country, Laos may not have the bays and beaches that we know of Asia, but it boasts some of the finest rivers that can satisfy the keenest of water sport enthusiasts. Whether you want to paddle through calm waters and admire the scenery or take on the rapids, kayaking is just another way to travel through Laos. Leave one village and arrive at another, watch local fishermen cast their nets, and discover stunning gorges for cliff jumping. You can experience all of these activities on the six-day Laos Multisport tour from Faralong.com.
Providing packages with a difference, each tour has a starting price, which reduces per person as more passengers book. The more passengers, the less each has to pay. Private bookings can also be made, with additional guests added on using a private tour code, again making the cost for each person decrease per additional member. If two people are travelling on the Laos Multisport tour, the cost is €1,095pp, but if four people book the tour, it decreases to €925pp and so on. The maximum number of passengers on the Laos Multisport tour is 12. You can also experience the adrenaline activities of Thailand on the 10-day Thai Multisport Adventure, including kayaking in Khao Sok National Park, trekking in the Phuket jungle, riding a longtail boat in Koh Yao Yai, and paddle boarding, rock climbing and abseiling in Krabi. Sign up to Faralong.com now to get €50 for your next tour, with no obligation to book! For more information on the Laos Multisport tour, visit www.faralong.com/laos/laos-multisport/130

Discover The Beauty Of China Open your eyes to this incredible country… From the hustle and bustle of Beijing to the karst mountains of Guilin, China is an example of modernity and history lying side-by-side. Everywhere you look there is some form of beauty – not necessarily natural, sometimes manmade, but always enough to take your breath away. Beijing, the capital city, is decorated with majestic palaces once owned by emperors centuries ago, including The Forbidden City and the Summer Palace. Bold and grand, they reside beside Hutongs – neighbourhoods of small alleyways and winding lanes to buy trinkets, souvenirs and surprises that you never know what you may find within. One of the best ways to get around is on a rickshaw – an icon of local transport. When evening comes around, you can’t pass up the
opportunity to try a spicy Sichuan feast before a Kung Fu Show at the Red Theatre – prepare for your jaw to drop to the floor as you gawp at the most famous martial arts in Chinese history. Of course, no trip to China is complete without a visit to the Great Wall – even if it’s just to say you’ve been. You can choose certain sections of the wall to walk, and Mutianyu provides one of the most fulfilling experiences with stunning views, few crowds and an incredible hike along this wonder of the world. If you get peckish, snacks from the local street vendors in Beijing are great for refuelling on the go. Some 700 miles away from Beijing, there are many sights you won’t forget in a hurry in Xi’an. If you’ve seen the Terracotta Warriors in pictures, you won’t believe how much more impressive they are in real life. These intricate sculptures depict the armies (horses and chariots included) of Qin
Shi Huang, the first emperor of China. Other beautiful sights can be had of the Great Mosque and the Big and Small Wild Goose Pagodas – the City Wall is particularly romantic in the evening.
up in greens, oranges, pinks and blues. To end your experience of Shanghai on a serious high (literally!), head up to a rooftop bar to look down upon the city.
For something of a more natural beauty, Guilin is home of spectacular karst mountains, quaint villages and the Li River. Take a cruise along the river to Yangshuo, soak up the gorgeous scenery and work your camera as if your life depends on it. Once in Yangshuo, you can explore the villages, meet the warm and welcoming locals and pick up any delicacies that take your fancy by bike.
Beijing, The Great Wall, Xi’an, Guilin and Shanghai are all destinations visited on the Beauty Of China tour with GuideWe Travel. Local English-speaking guides are ready to show you what each destination has to offer, from the sights to the food and the culture to the beauty. All local transport is included, such as high speed train tickets, flights and a private car, as well as WiFi while you’re on the road, travel insurance and bottled water. GuideWe can recommend and help you book accommodation, from boutique to 4-star hotels.
You can’t say you’ve discovered the beauty of China without visiting Shanghai. Referred to as the Paris of the East, this dynamic metropolis is adorned with mind-blowing architecture along the edge of the Huangpu River. The sight of the city at night is truly memorable – the closest you can come to seeing a city of the future as it lights

5 Reasons To Volunteer In 2016 Whether you want to build homes in Cambodia, teach in the Amazon, help communities in Brazil, or get hands-on with wildlife in South Africa, get stuck in and volunteer abroad. Tempted? Below are just a handful of reasons why you should think about delegating some time to volunteering in 2016.
Give Something Back
Volunteering is for obvious reasons a fantastic way to give something back to a community. Your efforts really are focused towards a meaningful project, which benefits the individuals, environment, and animals directly affected by an initiative. What’s more motivating than working towards something which directly enhances other people’s lives and the planet’s welfare?! A constant motivator is progress – with volunteering you’ll have bags of chances to 70
www.bbmlive.com
see your input paying off. Each day or even each hour you can step back and see a direct impact, whether this is building new homes for deprived families, caring for endangered animals, teaching underprivileged children or planting trees to develop eco-systems – you’ll know it’s worthwhile! You’ll also have plenty of recognition and admiration from all those that you help – what a feeling that is!
Develop New Skills
You have a choice to make when volunteering: do you want to do something you are familiar with in terms of skillset, location and cultures or do you want to experience something completely new? Neither choice is wrong or right it just depends on what your goal is: what do you want to take away from the experience? Are you looking to learn something new? If so volunteering can be a brilliant way to develop new skills or develop those which you already have. You can opt to use your current expertise to make a significant contribution or make a valued
contribution whilst picking up a skillset you’ve always wanted to learn! How does sport coaching in Africa sound or perhaps you’d like to qualify as a TEFL approved teacher in China?
Personal Growth and Fulfilment
With every ambition there has to be some selfinterest to take away from it, and rightly so. It can’t all be give, give, give without a little take! Volunteering is no different (no matter what people say) – essentially you give a lot to others and take back a lot yourself, mostly in terms of selfsatisfaction and the experience itself. From consulting with Real Gap Experience, it’s obvious their volunteers get a huge amount from the trips. In terms of personal growth and development, one of the most obvious is confidence. From working with new people of different backgrounds and spending time in new situations and often different cultures, your self-belief grows and grows. Most volunteers also comment on how volunteering adds a focus to what you want to achieve in later life; you’ll reflect on what really matters to you and what’s next (it’s a good thing)! Also worth mentioning is how employers these days love to see some volunteering on a CV (what a great day and age we live in!).
Unique Opportunities
Looking to tick some destinations off your bucket list, experience particular cultures, or get up close and personal with some wildlife? Volunteering is the way to do it! At the end of the day, life is about pushing yourself, experiencing different things and breaking away from that comfort zone! Why not do just that this year? How many can say they’ve worked on an African wildlife conservation? Rescued baby sea turtles in Costa-Rica? Helped families in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro? Or taught children across Asia? By volunteering you’re not just a tourist or a passerby, you become part of the community!
It’s Great Fun
Another important part of any ambition is the ability to make it fun! If it’s not you’ll be asking yourself why you’re spending valuable time doing it! Sure, with volunteering there will be tough moments, but the results, great people, amazing locations and new activities make it worth every second! There are multiple ways of supporting a community through volunteering. Why not head over to a local volunteer group near you to get an insight? Alternatively if you’re looking to make a difference and push yourself even further, why not volunteer in a fascinating country abroad? Check out Real Gap Experience’s top 10 volunteering projects at

Round-The-World FLIGHTS The earth’s circumference is 24,901 miles. Pretty long, right? But when we talk about round-theworld trips, it’s not to travel this length in one fell swoop (you can’t anyway – you’d run out of fuel and probably end up arse over tit in Siberia), but to visit the amazing places that our world has to offer. With different sights, sounds and smells, people to meet, wildlife to watch and cultures to immerse yourself in, there are some incredible routes you can take – and they all begin at your front door. Whether you’re heading back to the UK for a holiday or planning your next move, StudentUniverse’s Wanderlust takes you through Asia, the South Pacific and the USA, with destinations you’ll remember for a lifetime…

Singapore Highlights
One of the richest cities in the world, Singapore is a global financial hub attracting the busiest and wealthiest businessmen and women from around the world. Urban Meets Island In Auckland
Queenstown doesn’t get to have all the action. Hopping over to the North Island, Auckland is home to New Zealand’s tallest building – the Sky Tower – which you can bunjy jump off of at a screaming 85km per hour! When your feet are firmly back on the ground, embrace the mixture of restaurants, bars, galleries and shopping, or escape to one of the surrounding islands like Waiheke or Great Barrier for leisurely cycling, kayaking and Maori cultural experiences.
Stars & Stripes Of Los Angeles
Onwards from the South Pacific, you arrive on the land of the free and home of the brave (according to their national anthem, anyway) – United States of America. Los Angeles, to be precise, in southern California. Nicknamed the City of Angels and home of the Hollywood sign, L.A. is where dreams in film and TV are made, you can take tours through Hollywood neighbourhoods to see where the stars live, and visit studios such as Universal and Warner Brothers.
The Shores Of San Francisco
Take the Coast Starlight to San Francisco in the north of California. Located on the tip of a peninsular, it is a photographer’s haven with fantastic views in and around the city, whether the picturesque Golden Gate Bridge is bathed in fluffy fog or not.

With hotel accommodation, rooftop pool and bar, transport and entry to the tomato fight in Bunol, plus awesome group party nights, this is a summer festival not to be missed. What is La Tomatina you ask? Every year since 1945, on the last Wednesday of August approximately 22,000 participants from all over the World gather in Bunol and join the locals in throwing 145,000kg of tomatoes at each other! The fiesta will officially begin at 11am on Wednesday 29th August this year when the first rocket goes off, or when someone manages to claim the ham (yes an actual ham) from a greased pole. Grab those tomatoes and get throwing, squashing, flinging – you have exactly one hour! First Festival is also proud to offer the exclusive and highly recommended Wine & Water festival taking place in a tiny Spanish town the night before La Tomatina. This is a truly authentic and unique street party and will make your La Tomatina experience that much more memorable. INTERVIEWS
LEFTFIELD The British group credited for taking electronic music onto the live stage, we chat to Leftfield ‘s Neil Barnes to discuss new influences, the growth of electronic music, and his desire to work on a particular movie soundtrack. 16 years after ‘Rhythm and Stealth’, you release ‘Alternative Light Source’; how did you know it was the right time to bring out a third album? We’d been doing some touring in 2010 and we really enjoyed coming back with Leftfield, and I was doing quite a lot of DJing and it just felt like a relevant time. It’s an exciting period for electronic music and I thought it would be great to be a part of that. What do you make of electronic music today? When we started making electronic music, it was on the periphery of everything. We weren’t the first to make electronic music – bands like Kraftwerk had been doing it generations before us – but it wasn’t as big. Now it’s like the wallpaper of life. It’s the biggest thing in the world and I never thought it would be. That’s a massive difference.
What about your own influences? Have they changed at all? Yeah, because I’m inspired by the sounds I hear around me and the music that’s made by a lot of brilliant people. Influences that were around when I started, like punk, are still there, but they’re not so much of an influence on me. I’m affected by the music that I listen to which is often underground electronica and that’s definitely stimulated the record. It’s a reflection of Leftfield in 2015. Is Leftfield a solo project? I work with a guy called Adam Wren, who wrote and engineered a lot of the tracks with me, so even though I’m known as Leftfield, it’s still a collaborative project. We can’t forget the power of ‘Phat Planet’ on those Guinness adverts. If you were to have Leftfield on any brand, or were you to have created the soundtrack to a film, is there a specific one you would choose? Blade Runner would be wonderful to do a new soundtrack to – but it’s already perfect, that’s the problem! I think they’re remaking it this year. Have you had any calls? [Laughs] No, not yet. It’s a frightening thing, I think, to remake it. But, no calls yet. Who knows, maybe

STEPHEN K AMOS We chat to the maestro of feelgood comedy, Stephen K Amos, as he prepares to return to Australia for a strong of live shows. Hi Stephen, how’s life treating you? I’m travelling all over the UK on tour – thanks for asking! I leave at noon and get back at 3 in the morning with two pit stops for a meat pie on the way. The first one I eat, the second one I make. You can read that two ways. You’re returning to Australia yet again for the 2016 comedy festival season. What does The Laughter Master have in store for ticket holders? I can’t wait to bring my new show to Australia. It’s full of carefully honed, crafted material, with a soupcon of ironic flair, and a cheeky nod to the works of Alan Bennett. Nah, I just go up on stage with a microphone and whatever happens, happens. Sometimes I just read my shopping list or play I Spy. Ticket holders can expect to laugh! It’s not the ballet! How is the show going down in the UK? So far nobody’s walked out. Is it the type of show that you can take anywhere, or will you have to tweak it for audiences in Oz? The great thing about coming to Australia is getting to write material about Australia – because you’re so funny. I mean look at your politics. You’ve had four leadership coups since England won The Ashes. That’s more than Egypt and they’ve had two revolutions. But I’m glad you got rid of the Abbott guy. I think if you’re prime minister you shouldn’t be photographed in Speedos. And if Putin’s reading this, put your shirt back on! That was just a message for Putin. If you’re not Vladimir Putin you can ignore that. What is it about Australia that keeps you coming back? Do you like to take advantage of the laidback lifestyle? 82
www.bbmlive.com
If I’m being sincere, I love Australia. The people, the weather, the food, the culture, the history. Oh, scratch the history part. You’re so cute with your big building dating all the way back to 1950. I think my first car was older than the whole of Chapel Street in Melbourne. I don’t really have time to take full advantage of the travel-like things to do; that said I did get a helicopter to the Great Barrier Reef once. What I would like to do is to get more immersed in the rich cultural tapestry of the indigenous people. What about any favourite places or hangouts? I get to travel to some of the major cities in Australia and I have my favourite hangouts in all the places. I love Sydney for the beach (inside your biggest city – you have no idea how good that is!). Melbourne’s all about coffee and shopping and Adelaide is about wandering around the streets with no shoes, dreadlocks and a peculiar smell emanating from your cigarette.

DAVID O’DOHERTY Irish comedian, David O’Doherty, is returning to Australia with We Are All In The Gutter, But Some Of Us Are Looking At David O’Doherty. We sat down for a chat to find out more about him and his keyboard.
How many children’s books have you written? I’m doing the third one right now and it’s really fun. Doing stand-up, you can lose your mind with the relentless thinking of jokes and narcissistic self-analysis, so it’s really nice to be writing a story about a man who thinks that sharks comes out of toilets and eat you if you sit on them for too long – so Toilet Shark. That must be great to use your imagination… Yeah, totally! I have the sense of humour of an eight-year-old. Luckily, grown-ups haven’t quite noticed that – yet. But I’ve always done stand-up for kids – I actually did a play for kids in Australia a few years ago – and I really enjoy it. I’ve found that I have no status with kids whatsoever. Some people are old-school disciplinarians, but children just see me and they’re like, “This guy is an absolute idiot, we are gonna make mincemeat out of him.” Is that where the keyboard comes in? The keyboard comes in because my father was a jazz musician, so he’s impossibly good at the piano, and I realised when I was 17 that I wasn’t going to be particularly good, so I turned away from big pianos and started messing around with little pianos. Then there was the added bonus that you can fit one in a sports bag! You can take
it on a RyanAir flight and you don’t get charged an extra £150. Also, it reduces your song back to their absolute essence; if you play a big piano, and you’re as good as my dad, you can just play these fancy arpeggio chords and people will think you’re unbelievable, whereas on a keyboard, the best tune in the world will still sound slightly shit. There’s a great charm in that for me. Have you ever had any song requests? I have a thing for S Club 7’s ‘Never Had a Dream Come True’ – for some reason I have S Club 7 songs on my mind… Whenever I sit down to play a tune, very often it will be ‘Ain’t No Party Like An S Club Party’ or ‘Never Had A Dream Come True’. People know me for certain songs, and the problem that comedy has over music is that people go to a U2 gig or Oasis gig and get pissed off if they don’t hear certain songs, but then if a comedian tells the same jokes, the audience goes, “We know these!”

Interviews by Charlotte Mellor
Hi David, how are you? I am reasonably well. I have a dual career at the moment where I do stand-up by night and on days I don’t have gigs, I try and write 600 words for my children’s book. I got my 600 words today so I’m reasonably pleased with myself, but not in a smug sense.
FUNNY NEWS experienced the all-too harsh reality of the Sydney lockout laws for ourselves. But we’d never be so gagging that we’d attempt to smuggle booze into a country where alcohol is illegal – we just wouldn’t go. A man travelling from Bahrain to Saudi Arabia was a little more optimistic, and attempted to smuggle 14 bottles of sprits into the Muslim state by taping them to his legs under his white robes.
Soggy Bottom
A village in the middle of nowhere in Wales experienced its longest stretch of wet weather in its history with 84 days of rain. Eglwyswrw (no, we don’t know either) in Pembrokeshire came close to setting a new record for the longest consecutive days of pissingit-down, but fell short at the final hurdle. It’s probably for the best, as workers in the farming village claimed that even their livestock were getting depressed.
Custom officials claim to have become suspicious after they saw him walking funny. If that didn’t do it, the clinking noise in his pants might have been a bit of a giveaway.
Johnny Be Good
A London pub is attempting to go the extra mile to ensure its patrons practice super safe sex. Activated by a breathalyser, only those that can prove that they’re under the legal driving limit will be dispensed with a condom. Those that are too drunk, will go home without one - and probably just have sex without a condom anyway, because they’re drunk.
At least this time it was due to the weather and not for having a Welshman up where Welshmen don’t belong.
We don’t think they quite thought this one through.
30 Cigs A Day Keeps The Doctor Away
We know that Brazilians are notorious for their temper. But a TV crewmember took severe umbrage when a puppet got a bit too up-closeand-personal with him live on TV.
A 112-year-old Nepalese woman has credited her incredible age to smoking 30 cigarettes a day, every day, for the last 95 years. But these are no ordinary cigarettes; these are locally made cigarettes of tobacco wrapped in tendu leaf (say it in a sexy voice and you can see what we’re going for). Batuli Lamichhane, born in 1903, claims that her daily habit has helped her outlive four of her five children – her one son still alive is 85-years-old. She also offers some advice to the rest of us: “You have to be active and stress free.” Excuse us while we leave work early – doctor’s orders.

Enraged while holding a bucket of bananas (no, we don’t know why either), the man in question pursued the pesky puppet around the studio in an attempt to teach it a lesson. It didn’t seem to occur to him that the puppet had someone’s hand up its backside controlling everything it did.
SPORTS NEWS
Six Nations 2016 Following embarrassment for pretty much every European team at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy are gearing up once again for the Six Nations, to try and improve each of their reputations. Kicking off on 6th February with the final game on 19th March, it’s six weeks of head-butts, split lips and probably some bruised egos as we wait to see who comes out on top. Leading England this year will be Northampton hooker, Dylan Hartley, and it looks like Ireland’s Moore is out while Sexton is in. For Wales, all eyes are on Dan Biggar and Liam Williams, and Glasgow Warriors prop, Zander Fagerson,
reckons Scotland have a chance this year – and judging from their performance in the World Cup, he just might be right…
No Mercy For Man Utd
‘Ad Enough Of Adebayor
The team, led by current manager, Louis van Gaal, stormed their match against Southampton losing 1-0. Losing at home to the Saints may have bee one thing, but managing just one shot on target for the whole 90 minutes justified jeers from their fans, which Gaal agreed was well deserved.
There’s no doubt that the South London team are in dire need of a striker, but the African player, who’s been without a club since September, clearly wasn’t the first choice for some Palace supporters.
“They are right to boo. I cannot deny that, I saw the match.” Whether he’ll be watching the next game on the pitch or at home in his pants is anybody’s guess. Meanwhile, all Man Utd fans have gone into hibernation, so at least we can be grateful for Wayne Rooney for something other than endless Shrek jokes. Seriously, they never get old.
Bloodhound Does A Paula
Former Spurs, Manchester City, Arsenal and Real Madrid player, Emmanuel Adebayor, has signed with Crystal Palace on a free transfer.
While his record of 96 goals in 230 Premier League games is an impressive one on paper, he does come with a bit of baggage, previously criticised for being greedy and lazy. Twitter was awash with dismay with one user commenting “Adebayor, coming to a fantasy league near you for 3 weeks between now and May before spectacularly falling from grace.” While another simply put, “Decent signing until he gets bored of playing football.”
In a weird twist on the tale of Paula Radcliffe stopping to defecate on the side of the road during the 2005 London Marathon, a bloodhound popped out to take a whizz and ended up competing in a half marathon. The dog, who lives in Alabama and goes by the name of Ludivine, snuck out of her owner’s back garden and made her way to the starting line, ran 13.1 miles, and finished seventh place in just over an hour and a half. And they say Americans are fat and lazy.

There comes a time when every dog has its day, and on 23rd January 2016, Manchester United was definitely not that dog.
CRYSTAL BALLS mean large areas of Capricorn will be completely submerged by the year 2025. By 2030, all that will be left is the letters Capcon. The news strains tensions between Capricornians and the “big four” carbon producers - Leo, Taurus, China and Donald Trump.
Aries
Aquarius
What to get that special someone for Valentine’s Day? A bunch of roses perhaps? Jewellery even? Well someone certainly goes out of their way to make sure you get a surprise this February 14, when you open your mail box to find someone has posted human excrement in there. Even worse, it comes with a note saying it was delivered by Moonpig.
Sagittarius
You become possessed by the spirit of music genius and pop legend David Bowie. Unfortunately, you only get possessed by his “Goblin King” persona from the movie Labyrinth and spend the next month pacing about in a ridiculous blonde wig and an unflattering leather codpiece mumbling gibberish about the power of voodoo and telling random women that they remind you of “the babe with the power”.
Gemini
There’s outrage at this year’s Oscars over the lack of Geminis nominated in the main categories, leading to accusations of Geminism against the Academy. Host Chris Rock, who is also a Gemini, pokes fun at the disparity during the ceremony, making a series of controversial jokes about how Gemini people are different from Taurus people.

You rent out a DVD of Straight Outta Compton but it’s scratched and the last 10 minutes won’t play. You spend the rest of your life wondering what happened to Dr Dre and Ice Cube after they left NWA.
Cancer
You are invited onto longrunning British music quiz show “Never Mind the Buzzcocks” as a lookalike for a member of Steps in the ‘guess the celeb’ round. Unfortunately, just before the show, all the members of Steps are convicted for crimes against music and sentenced to be injected with hepatitis C. As the police can’t differentiate the lookalikes from the real thing, they decide to infect all of you.
Pisces
As a romantic gesture for Valentine’s Day, you get in touch with Gary Barlow’s management to see if he’ll help you write a ballad for that certain special someone. His agent tells you to piss off so instead you try Howard Donald, who’s happy for the work. The resulting collaboration is so awful, the Supreme Court sentences both of you to be injected with hepatitis C for crimes against music.
Libra
After four years, 136 days and 19 hours, you finally laugh at a joke on Mrs Brown’s Boys. You’re heavily drunk at the time.
Taurus
You decide to form your own “gangster rap” band with your good friends Tim, Steve, Caroline, and that nice couple you met on a wine tour in the
Hunter Valley. Your first album, Straight Outta Mosman, is so badly received that a judge orders that each band member be injected with hepatitis C as punishment.
Leo
Your face is hideously mangled in a freak accident involving a motorbike courier and a crate of deranged bonobo apes. After months of painful plastic surgery, the doctor removes your bandages to reveal you look exactly like Geordie TV hardman turned singer Jimmy Nail. The rest of your life is spent earning a pittance at tribute shows, playing various clubs and pubs around Australia, most of which have never even heard of Jimmy Nail.
Virgo
Do you ever feel like a plastic bag? Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again? Do you ever feel, feel so paper-thin? Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in? You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine. Just own the night like the fourth of July. ‘Cause, baby, you’re a firework. Come on, show ‘em what you’re worth. Make ‘em go, “Aah, aah, aah”. As you shoot across the sky-y-y.
Scorpio
You are randomly contacted by the agent of 90s popster and ‘Dreams’ singer Gabrielle, who is apparently keen to collaborate with you on a song for her comeback album. The cyclopean songstress wants you to provide harmonies on an acapella version of the ‘Crazy Frog’ song to celebrate 10 years since its release. The song proves so unpopular that a judge orders that both of you be injected with hepatitis C - an increasingly common court ruling on crimes against music.
ASK CRYSTAL Dear Crystal, My husband and I are on the brink of divorce. I still love him but we had a fierce argument last week that almost turned violent and neither one of us is willing to back down. For the sake of our two children, I want to fix it - but until one of us holds their hands up and admits it’s their turn to do the dishes, then I can’t see any way forward except separation. To make matters worse, we’ve only just got over a big fight about whether or not you have to pay $20 to leave jail when you roll a double in Monopoly. He spent six months living in his brother’s spare room after that one. Yours, Tamara Dear Tamara, It’s the kids I feel sorry for in situations like this. Imagine being born with two fuckwits for parents? Poor little bastards never stood a chance. Now stop pissing about and do the dishes. That way you’ll have the upper hand in the relationship for the rest of the week. Plus it must stink to buggery in your kitchen by now.
Dear Crystal, I’ve been seeing a boy called James for about two months. He’s a lovely lad, very good-natured, worships me and he’s not bad to look at either - but, frankly, he’s a bit boring and I know the relationship is going nowhere. The problem is, I hate dumping people - especially someone as nice as James - so as a way of ending the relationship without having “the talk”, I was thinking of hiring a hit man to kill him. I thought some kind of hit and run would be best. What do you think? Yours, Genevieve Dear Genevieve, Excellent idea Genevieve, always useful to have a reliable hit man in your contacts book. I’ll forward you the number of my guy. I’ve had to use him a few times in the last month to dispose of some legendary rock and pop stars who secretly filmed a four-way with me back in the ‘70s. I can’t name names but let’s just say one of them is now “ashes to ashes”. I wasn’t that bothered about the video before, but you can’t take any chances in this internet age of revenge porn.
