Set upon 1500 acres of pristine land just outside the town of Pyalong, 90km from Melbourne, is earthcore, Australia’s most pioneering dance music festival. Returning for its 22nd anniversary from 26th-30th November 2015, this celebration of music, art and culture will be bringing 5 days of fun that are not to be missed. With five days to enjoy, it’s not just about the music. There’s the ‘Fractured Reality’ art zone, mind bending art installations and a Muffplex cinema, promising a treat for all the five senses. With so much going on, you won’t be bored for a moment. The music is set to take place across the festival’s five stages, ranging from the debaucherous ‘Kinky Karnival’ to the more relaxed ‘Yellow Sunshine’ stage where you can relax, unwind and immerse yourself in a haven of sight and sound. earthcore provides stimulation not only for the ears but for the eyes too with its jaw dropping art installations and performances from acrobats to harlequins and everything in between. After all the partying, earthcore also promises to replenish and revitalise with the Elemental Planet and its five distinct zones. Rehydrate your body in the water zone, be healed in the air zone, be guided in physical exchange in the fire zone, embrace your creativity in the spirit zone or learn from teachings in the Earth zone. Hungry? No problem. Grab a bite to eat at The Market Food Zone from the multitude of vendors offering everything from vegetarian delights to dripping meats carved from the bone. As if that wasn’t enough, earthcore has also announced two huge sideshows which will take place in Melbourne, and fittingly it’s aimed at the techno lovers too. The Royal Melbourne Hotel in Melbourne’s CBD will play host to Spanish duo Pig & Dan and French legend Oxia on Friday 20th November, while the following week on Friday 27th November the same venue will see Sam Paganini (in his debut Melbourne show), oldschool acid techno stalwart D.A.V.E. the Drummer, and German tech DJ Oskar Offerman take to the stage. 8

Best Of British At Stereosonic 2015 Bringing the biggest international electronic acts to Australia, Stereosonic gears up for another year this November and December. With artists from around the world, the UK is being represented by the best of British.

Clean Bandit

Their late 2013 track ‘Rather Be’ with Jess Glynne shot them and her into the spotlight, becoming one of the biggest tunes of the year. Since then, they’ve gone onto play at every major festival around the world, supported the likes of Rudimental and Big Boi on tour, and even bagged themselves a Grammy.

Duke Dumont

He has been a “producer’s producer” for some time, but in 2014, Duke Dumont became a UK star with his chart hit ‘I Got U’. A favourite amongst house fans, he’s played everywhere from Coachella to Creamfields and has continuous support from the one and only Annie Mac.

Hannah Wants

After a mental 2014, Hannah Wants continued her success into 2015 with her What Hannah Wants series and returning to major festivals and clubs like Creamfields and Amnesia Ibiza. A true DJ in the finest order, her return to Australia for Stereosonic is what our dreams are made of.

Patrick Topping

Releasing on Hot Creations, Hottrax and Relief Records, Patrick Topping is hot property. The Newcastle DJ has made waves on the dance floor with his ‘Boxed Off EP’ and ‘Get Beasty EP’, and has earned himself a DJ Award for Best Newcomer, so you know he can deliver on the decks and in the studio.

Mark Sherry

Touring relentlessly, huge remixes and on air with Outburst Radio – Mark Sherry never stops doing what he loves. The Scottish tech-trance extraordinaire has made his presence felt on labels such as Armada, Anjunabeats and Mental Asylum, and stages at Tomorrowland, Ultra and Subculture, so he won’t disappoint when he takes over Stereosonic

The

Harbour

Bridge One of the most spellbinding cities in the world, it’s hard not to fall in love with Sydney.

16

www.bbmlive.com

The hustle and bustle of the CBD, the pearly white of the Sydney Opera House, and the dramatic sight of the harbour whether bathed in glorious sunshine or glowing with the lights of the boats, restaurants and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the evening – it’s no wonder those that have done BridgeClimb Sydney gush about it afterwards. You wouldn’t think a steel manmade structure shaped like a coat hanger could be so majestic – but the Sydney Harbour Bridge is something truly special. It’s undoubtedly the heart of Sydney, beating life into the city by connecting the north with the CBD and visible from all corners of this urban utopia. A favourite amongst photographers, lovers, friends, families, celebrities, travellers and more – it unites us all thanks to its breath-taking views, whether you’re staring up at it from The Rocks or standing on the summit and looking out across the city.

Which Climb To Book? Dawn Climb

To see the sun breaking through on the horizon just as the city’s waking up, you should book the Dawn Climb. There are limited departures, but you get a group photo free to remember your climb. From $353pp.

Day Climb

BridgeClimb Sydney provides such an experience – think of them as a matchmaker between you and the city. Climbing 1,332 steps to the top while Sydney’s traffic hums below, the anticipation of what lies before your eyes increases with every step. And trust us when we say that you won’t get a view like this from anywhere else in the city. With climbs at different times of the day, you could see Sydney with a dusky pink sky, a burnt orange sunset, or twinkling in night-time darkness. The view, the colours, the emotion – the Sydney Harbour Bridge is all about moments that take your breath away, which is why it has become the number one spot in Sydney to pop the question – because where better to profess your love for another than with this beautiful backdrop?

The Day Climb departs from early morning to late afternoon so you get to look down and see Sydney at its busiest! During specific times of the year, you can tailor your climb to celebrate Chinese New Year, Mardi Gras and even get married! From $268-283pp including group photo.

Twilight Climb

Stand at the top of the bridge and take in the view of Sydney just as the sun sets and the moon lights up. On Twilight departures, you can also choose the Mardi Gras Climb and BridgeClimb Wedding. From $333-353pp.

Night Climb

BridgeClimb Sydney is available for dawn, day, twilight and night climbs from $158pp, so you just have to choose the one that suits you. Do you want to witness Sydney waking up with sunrise, or watch people go about their day under the midday sun? Or how about seeing the city light up as Sydney’s nightlife kicks into gear? The scenes from the bridge are so different through the day, we wouldn’t blame you if you embarked on BridgeClimb Sydney more than once.

After sun sets when the skyline is lit up and the sky is bathed in darkness, the Night Climb begins. Make your climb extra special at certain times of the year with the Karaoke Climb, Mardi Gras Climb, BridgeClimb Wedding and Vivid Climb – when the arch is lit up in bold and beautiful colours for Sydney’s festival of light, music and ideas. EXPAT INTERVIEW

HEALTHCARE AUSTRALIA (HCA)

This month we talk to Liam Caswell, from Edinburgh, who took the plunge and moved to Australia to nurse and travel. Here he discusses his time working with HCA at a state-of-the-art medical oncology centre in Sydney as an intensive care nurse as well as all the plus points of making the move Down Under. What inspired you to come over to Australia? I’ve always had a desire to move to Australia, I’ve always wanted to experience the lifestyle, take a back seat and enjoy travelling this wonderful country. My other half is also Australian so that also spurred me along! Why did you decide to join an agency? I heard about HCA agency nursing through a friend who had recently emigrated from Scotland. She told me HCA was very reliable, understanding of travellers’ circumstances and that there was always a shift that could be picked up! As she had only had positive experiences I thought I best join them! What nursing experiences stand out the most to you, since you’ve been in Australia? When I first arrived in Sydney, I did a lot of public work which I found really exciting. However, I’ve been lucky to secure a block booking at one of the private hospitals. It’s given me the opportunity to build on my own nursing experience and clinical skills, allowing me to become a competent practitioner within a different field that I had not experienced before. What has been your biggest achievement? Working with an ICU is a challenge and we tend to have lots of different types of patients. I’ve learnt so much working there and I’ve gained so many great new skills. I’ve been working as a team leader on the unit which is a new area for me. I manage the other nurses, make sure the day runs smoothly and that the patient care is the best it can be. How have you found working in a new healthcare system and environment? It’s been pretty easy fitting into the Australian healthcare system, a lot of it is very similar to the UK and I’ve not had any problems making friends or fitting in with the Australian nurses. Working on a block booking basis I’ve made quite a few 28

www.bbmlive.com

friends through HCA and there is a great online network of people. How do you find Australian culture? Australia’s a fantastic place to live! The culture here, the work culture especially, is very laid back and very flexible. The people are lovely too, they are always willing to help and they are just very kind and polite. I’ve really enjoyed working and living here. What is it that you like most about your lifestyle? Being an agency nurse in Australia has allowed me to fund fantastic adventures whilst I have been living here. Being able to work and travel is a great advantage that nurses have when working with HCA. I tend to work a couple of weeks and then I have a couple of weeks holiday so I can tick other things off my bucket list. Since moving to Australia, I’ve spent a lot more time playing hard than working - the flexibility is really the key to being able to travel! What was your most memorable experience? Definitely flying into Sydney airport on the night that I arrived here – we flew in at around 10pm and it was just beautiful. Flying in over the city, seeing the city lights, the harbour bridge all lit up and the opera house - I knew I had arrived in Sydney and was ready to start my adventure! What advice would you give to other nurses thinking of moving to Australia? I would say come – don’t wait any longer! It’s definitely a move that’s worthwhile, so give it a go – even if it is just a temporary stay for the one year on the working holiday visa. It’s a fantastic experience, the country’s beautiful, the people are lovely and the weather is so much better than the UK! Do you plan to stay here in Australia? YES! I’m going to stay forever and become a permanent resident!

Bite Me Australian Spiders & Creepy Crawlies

For many people, one of the most off-putting factors about moving abroad to Australia is its deadly world of arachnids, reptiles and insects, so let us put the record straight and debunk a few myths about what might lurk in the long grass of your new backyard. Here are the facts about spiders: Yes, some of them are big. Big and crawly. Yes, some of them are poisonous. However, no one has died from a spider bite in Australia for over 30 years. So if you can get past the size thing, you’ll be fine. Having said that, make sure you don’t get on the wrong side of a Funnel Web spider because it’s one of the deadliest spiders in the world. If you suspect you’ve been bitten by one of the forty different species of Funnel Web spider, make a quick dash to A&E. Signs that you’ve been bitten by a Funnel Web Spider are…well, they’re unpleasant so we won’t write them here. Just do the A&E thing and get some antivenom down you. Unless you’re Bear Grylls or some other alpha male show-off with a TV show, a Black Widow spider will leave you alone. If you tinker with its nest or provoke it in any way, it will bite you on the hand. From then on, you better put your affairs in order and delete your browser history because you’re not going to be around for long. Or get some antivenom. Actually, do that first.

38

www.bbmlive.com

Although arachnids have not been responsible for any fatalities in Australia for decades, snakes remain a deadly menace, and it’s these unforgiving inhabitants you need to be most wary of. Australia is home to seven species of the 10 most poisonous snakes in the world. Among the most feared are the Eastern Brown snake, the Australian Tiger snake and the not-at-allmisleadingly named ‘Death Adder’. Then there’s the jack jumper ant. To put it bluntly, these things are vicious little b*****s. They’re venomous, scavenging carnivores and are responsible for more deaths in Tasmania than sharks, snakes, wasps and spiders combined, although only four Tasmanians have died of a jack jumper sting in the last 30 years, so don’t expect to be pounced on the moment you step off the plane. And we haven’t even touched on the enemies lurking in the surrounding seas. But that’s for another article. In the meantime don’t forget that once you’ve defeated your irrational fears of things with more legs than you, Seven Seas Worldwide can handle your house relocation to Australia with its revolutionary door-to-door MoveCube ® service.

WHAT ARE BAR MANAGERS LOOKING FOR IN THEIR STAFF? If you’re looking for bar work in Sydney, The Keystone Group’s National Bar Manager, Manuel Terron, reveals what he looks for in his staff. What key things does a bartender need to find work behind a bar? The most obvious is experience and an RSA certificate, but for me the key is passion, that is something that you cannot teach someone.

How important is it to have an RSA and an RCG? Can you employ someone without them?

In today’s climate of overregulation, it is essential to have an RSA, otherwise you can’t work in Australia. RCG will give you the option to work in a gaming environment, but not a necessity for bar work.

Will the type of experience required depend on the venue?

Definitely. The experience for a pub is on a more basic level, whereas without solid cocktail experience, it would be near impossible to find work behind a cocktail bar.

What can someone do if they have no previous bar experience?

The best thing to do is gain a foothold in the industry either waiting tables, bar-backing or something that is more basic and doesn’t require too much technical knowledge. Then work towards learning from the people working the bar and wait for the chance where you can move laterally.

40

www.bbmlive.com

How can bartenders continue to improve their skills?

Read! Practice! Persevere! Work hard! I would also add to this to get into cocktail competitions as they will push the creativity and provide a forum to become better.

If someone was on a working holiday visa, would this put managers off hiring them? Not at all, especially when the busy season comes along.

How would you describe the Sydney bar industry?

It is probably one of the top cities globally for quality bartenders. With that said it is also difficult to find staff here...

What are the best things about working in the bar industry?

I’m sure 100 people would have 100 different answers. I would say that apart from the friendships built in this industry, it is about creating a moment or experience for someone that lasts forever!

Tour Guide Interview:

The Best Wines In The Hunter Valley We speak to Steve, an Activity Tours guide, who reveals just what makes the Hunter Valley so incredible for natural, local produce, and why a tour of the wine region is such a popular must-do just two hours outside of Sydney. Why is the Hunter Valley so suited to wine production? It comes down to what the French call “terroir” – a combination of different soil types and microclimates in sub valleys. But, what also makes it suited is the passion of the winemakers. Most of the vineyards in the Hunter are small and family-owned, perfect for making small production, premium wines. What would you say is your favourite wine and a must try for people on your tours? The Hunter is most famous for Semillon and Shiraz and they are outstanding, however, for me Verdelho. A Portuguese grape variety well suited to the hot climate of the Hunter. Australia is one of the only countries, even today, that produces a single variety table wine from Verdelho grapes. Is there a best time of the year to go on a wine tour in the Hunter Valley? No time is a bad time in the Hunter for wine tasting. Different seasons have different highlights.

44

www.bbmlive.com

Spring is bud burst, a wonderful time when the vines are starting to do their clever stuff. Summertime is harvest and the vines are loaded with bunches of berries – also a chance to see the picking and crushing taking place in the wineries. Autumn, when the leaves are changing colour, looks spectacular, and winter when the vines are bare and pruned back looks quite stark. What would you say is the most picturesque part of a wine tour with Activity Tours? Apart from the guides, sitting on the verandah outside a cellar door looking out over the vines that have created the wine you are “test driving.” Your tours also incorporate cheese tasting, can you tell us a bit more about what visitors can sample? The Hunter cheeses are becoming sought-after in and around Sydney. They produce a range of cheeses at different times of the year including Bries, Cheddars, Goats cheese and some great marinated with oils and chilli and garlic. What is your ultimate Cheese and Wine combo? A late harvest Verdelho with a bitey blue cheese. Eat, drink and discover the Hunter Valley with Activity Tours. Experience The Glass House Twister

On the Sunshine Coast

Adrenaline-pumping activity meets spectacular scenery on the Glasshouse Twister with Caloundra Jetski. This 90-minute ride is a must-do for adventure seekers who want to go faster, go further, see more and do more. Located on the beautiful Sunshine Coast just an hour north of Brisbane, this is not just a jetski, it’s an eco experience that twists and turns through narrow winding mangroves before spitting you out in Tripcony Bight where there are awesome views over the ancient volcanos of the Glasshouse Mountains. The experience starts the moment you arrive. Conducted by local character, Ken Jeffreys, you’ll have plenty of laughs on the safety briefing as you learn how to stay out of trouble on these clean, green Yamaha Waverunners. You’ll be sharing the journey with soaring sea eagles, smart Ospreys, beautiful Brahminy Kites and hearing the dulcet tones of the Whistling Kites – and in the water, there’ll be turtles and dolphins – sometimes you will see them, sometimes you won’t.

This is one of Australia’s most important wetlands – RAMSAR-listed and a sanctuary to a myriad of migratory and wading birds – as many species as you might find in the famed Kakadu National Park, yet just 60km from Brisbane. If you’re interested, Ken (he hates being called a guide, he prefers you to think you are going on a ride with a mate who happens to own a couple of skis and knows where all the sandbars are) will tell you the Aboriginal Dream Time yarns about the Glasshouse Mountains, the area’s natural history and how the Brits “discovered” it a couple of hundred years ago. Don’t worry! It’s not all eco – there’ll be plenty of opportunity to put the skis through their paces. It’s a bit like rally car driving on water, culminating in a couple of hot laps at Lighthouse Reach where the locals go for high speed adventure. The Glasshouse Twister is the most exciting ride of your life and you don’t even need a license. At $260 per jet ski all inclusive, including quality photos posted straight to Facebook, it’s worth every cent. Book your 90-minute Glasshouse Twister ride, see what other trips they do and find out more about Caloundra Jetski at www.caloundrajetski.com.au and

Summer on Fraser Island To find out just what it’s like on Fraser Island during the summer, we put our questions to Hana White, the First Lady of Drop Bear Adventures.

love finding a shady spot with ocean views and knowing I’m close to all the benefits a fridge brings on a hot summer’s day.

What is the best thing about Fraser Island in the summer?

Summer is when most wildlife comes out to play. Typically, you can expect to see goannas, eagles, turtles, snakes, spiders, all sorts of crabs, a whole load of birds, echidnas (the Aussie version of a hedgehog) and, of course, our famous dingo. We also spot lots of marine life such as dolphins, manta rays, Humpback Whales and sharks. It’s a wildlife frenzy on Fraser.

For me, nothing beats a good swim on a hot summer’s day, so I would have to say the freshwater lakes. The cool, crystal-clear freshwater is the perfect temperature in the summer. It’s lovely and lukewarm, so you can dive right in and stay in there until you’re all pruned up!

What are the swimming opportunities like?

Fraser Island is home to more than half of the world’s perch dune lakes. Although you can’t get to all of them on the island (unless you are up for some serious bush bashing), you still have over 10 of them. There are also beautiful freshwater creeks pumping out thousands of gallons of water every hour on the beach, so you’re never short of a swimming spot on Fraser Island.

Where’s the best place to relax on the island?

That’s a little trickier to answer as the island itself is so relaxing, but if I had to choose my favourite hammock spot, of course, it would be the front garden at the Drop Bear Beachcamp. I

What wildlife can we expect?

What’s your favourite place on Fraser Island?

My favourite place without a doubt is Sandy Cape. Only a few lucky people make it up to the tip of the island every year. It’s a bit tricky to get to, but once you’re there, you couldn’t feel further away from everything and that’s its charm. Totally cut off from any creature comforts but surrounded by untouched beaches and piercing blue waters. I’ve been lucky enough to go there four times in my five years on Fraser and one of those visits I shared with close friends and family as I said “I do”. Drop Bear Adventures run tours of Fraser Island throughout the year. Find out more at

THE TURTLES WILL SOON BE HATCHING ON HERON ISLAND

The Great Eight To See On Heron Island: Just like the Big Five of Africa, these are the marine animals and experiences that you don’t want to miss in the world’s largest coral reef system – and you can see and do them all from the stunning surroundings of Heron Island. 1.Turtles & their hatchlings 2. Reef Sharks 3. Manta Rays 4. Gropers 5. Clown Fish 6. Maori Wrasse 7. Humpback Whales which migrate past Heron Island during the winter months 8. The Reef 4 Ways – either walk it at low tide, snorkel it, on a semi-sub or dive to the depths.

56

www.bbmlive.com

Vulnerable, brave and adorable, the hatchlings are coming out their shells on Heron Island. From October each year, Heron Island becomes a breeding ground for Green Turtles and Loggerhead Turtles. After around 60 days buried beneath the golden sands of this beautiful coral cay off the coast of Queensland, the hatchlings make their way to the surface, ready to embark on the journey of a lifetime. One of the few places in the world where you can witness the hatchlings make their first journey into the ocean, you are welcome to watch them from a distance, but to prevent frightening them, there are guidelines to follow. The hatchlings use the natural light on the horizon to navigate out to the ocean, so torches are to be turned off so as to not confuse the turtles and cause them to head away from the

ocean. They are so small, they need all the energy they can muster to find their way. An adult female turtle can lay a clutch of eggs three to five times on the beach during the breeding season, and with 120 eggs in each clutch, there are great opportunities to see the nesting and hatching experience. Being situated on the Great Barrier Reef, Heron Island is the perfect holiday for keen divers, swimmers and snorkelers as well as those who want to get away from it all for a few days. Heron Island operate a strictly no day-trippers rule, meaning you can avoid hordes of tourists and really appreciate the unfathomable beauty of the island and its surrounds. To be a part of one of nature’s greatest journeys, experience this turtle season on a 3 or more night Turtle Season Holiday, which includes: accommodation, daily breakfast, 2 snorkel trips, 24 hours free Wi-Fi for 1 device, a special turtle gift (an ornament per room or a t-shirt/turtle backpack for kids). Available from $160 per person, twin share, book a suite and receive return transfers for 2 adults. So if you’re looking for the perfect summer getaway then head to

www.heronisland.com/turtles or phone 1300 863 248 to book your trip to paradise.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Scuba Diving At Lena Wreck

Prepare to be captivated by the underwater wonder of Lena Wreck. For a mesmerising diving experience, you can count on Lena Wreck. Not only is this sunken vessel home to a plethora of marine life, it also has an interesting story. A relatively new shipwreck in 2003, the FV Lena was a Patagonian Tooth Fish vessel that was found to be illegally fishing in Western Australian waters. After a chase across the Indian Ocean, she was caught by the Australian Navy nearly 2,000km southwest of Perth. After her capture, she was deliberately sunk less than three nautical miles off the coast of Bunbury. 12 years on, she has become a diving paradise. With a depth range of 5-18 metres, the Lena Wreck is an experience for every level of diver, being one of the most accessible wrecks today. The entry and exit holes are perfectly safe, and the wide-open internal spaces allow for comfortable exploring, but this doesn’t mean the Lena Wreck isn’t exciting for the more experienced diver. Unlike other wrecks, her engine room

62

www.bbmlive.com

has been kept open with the main engine and generators left in place, as has the propeller, which provides an intriguing photo opportunity with the fish that have made it their home. Speaking of which, the marine life that the Lena Wreck has attracted is astounding. Covered in coral, there’s an abundance of Baitfish, Skippy, Bulleye, Western Blue Devil, Leather Jacket, Boarfish, Octopus and Gobe Fish. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the odd Rock Lobster. To experience the Lena Wreck, you can take a guided or unguided tour with The Dive Shed. Suitable for up to 10 divers, transport to the wreck and morning tea are provided at $140pp. You can also receive free equipment hire (usually $55) when you mention BBM at the time of booking. The Dive Shed also provide scuba diving charters to the Busselton Jetty and Swan Wreck. Find more information on all scuba diving experiences with The Dive Shed at

Make Your Way To Monkey Mia One of the most reliable places in the world to meet wild bottlenose dolphins, a visit to Monkey Mia is virtually guaranteed to deliver. More than 800km northwest of Perth, it’s well worth making the journey to spend a few days in this marine paradise. As part of Shark Bay Marine Park, wild dolphins have been visiting the shores of Monkey Mia almost every day for over 40 years, and you can learn more about why at the Dolphin Interactive Centre. With the chance to meet and interact with these adorable animals, it’s no wonder people come all this way just for the dolphin encounter. It’s not just about the dolphins though; the waters of Monkey Mia are perfect for kayaking, paddle

boating and swimming, with glorious golden sands for when you just need to relax. There’s also the contrasting colours of Francois National Park, which boasts red dunes and turquoise waters for four-wheel-driving, camping and fishing. With an unbeatable experience with wildlife and the gorgeous blue waters of the Western Australian coastline, you’d be mad to miss Monkey Mia. Book at www.integritycoachlines.com.au

The island’s food reflects its thriving agricultural industry – with local bees producing beautifully golden honey exclusive to the island and the farmed sheep providing a source of delicious meats and cheeses. The island is also an official wine region of Australia and has a dozen vineyards where you can enjoy the flavours of some of the finest grape wines whilst taking in the spectacular scenery. Whether you’re seeking the adrenaline rush of intrepid hikes or simply wishing to admire the wealth of natural beauty, Kangaroo Island is definitely one to visit this spring and summer. Top 5 Pl a ce s To Se e T h e Su n s et i n Ba li

Bali – widely known as Island of the Gods, it is clear to see why when you first find yourself sitting, literally awe struck as the sky opens into symphony of reds and oranges and the sun sets in Bali. Here are Inner Temple Retreats review of Bali’s Top 5 places to spend those magical 20 minutes at the end of the day.

La Laguna – Berawa

Think bohemian gypsy garden party, clever placement of dozens of Indonesia’s antique wooden Joglos make you feel like Alice in Bali Wonderland. The newest venture from the already renowned La Plancha in Legian and La Favella in Seminyak is one of Bali’s newest and we dare say most photographed sunset spots. Accessible via a new road just on the corner of Batu Belig it’s also attractive to beach strollers who can wander in over an impressive timber and rope bridge. This place is definitely the hero of Berawa beach.

Kommune Resort - Keramas

Just two years ago only the surfers knew or cared about Keramas on Bali’s east coast. But now the secret is out. This place is an easy drive just 20mins past Sanur using the Ida Bagus Mantram and although this place is totally geared up for surf lovers – boasting Bali’s best right hand wave, it is in fact a spacious, clean, and really well-managed beach bar and resort. The menu is full and fabulous, reasonably priced bar snacks, dinners, and a full selection of drinks. The scenery includes a pool, the Keramas surf break and everything set up and ready for you to enjoy the sunset.

El Kabron – The Bukit Peninsular

A trip to the Bukit for either surfing, sunbathing on 68

www.bbmlive.com

Bali’s best looking white sand beaches would end perfectly with a secluded sundowner at El Kabron. A vibe-y Spanish atmosphere with DJ beats, cool people and infinity pool set high on the cliff tops over-looking the vast Indian Ocean. This place is pretty spectacular at any time of day, but really comes into its own at Sunset. Enjoy the tapas sharing plates and soak up the view.

Potato Head - Seminyak

By now this super-sized beach bar has become a Seminyak institution. On arrival the absolute awesomeness of this venue is unmistakable; a semi-circular, towering façade of colourfully mismatched 18th Century teak window shutters, collected from across the Indonesian archipelago. If you are looking for quiet evening, this might not be right for you, however with three different restaurant menus to choose from and pages and pages of creative and quirky cocktails it is a definite must see for anyone seeking sophistication at sunset while visiting Bali.

Old Man’s - Canggu

A popular and comfy hang-out at the end of Batu Bolong overlooking Old Man’s surf break this place is favoured by the local expats as much as the budget travelers and endless summer surf seekers. A monthly market for vegetables, artisan food and clothing pops up places this venue firmly in the heart of the Canggu community. On the weekends once the sun has set the music is turned up and a youthful and predominantly Australian crowd max out and enjoy the beer garden atmosphere. Finding Your Way Through Sri Lanka

Not only is there a lot to see and do here, but the climate and terrain is as varied as the sights themselves. One day you could be sunning yourself along the stunning sands of South Coast, the next you could be trekking the mountainous green grasslands of the rainy Hill Country. Due to Sri Lanka’s relatively small size, you can cover great distances in short amounts of time, and with the great connections on the buses and trains, you can visit all of the major points of interest.

Colombo and the coast

As you’ll be flying in and out of Colombo, this can form the basis of your plans, by enjoying the city either side of your trip. Mixing colonial Dutch influences with modern city life, the capital reflects the many vibrant facets that Sri Lanka has to offer. Spend a few days checking out the city’s museums, Buddhist temples and diverse neighbourhoods. From here you can also take day trips by train to the city’s nearest beach, Mt Lavinia and further south to Galle. Here you can wander along the crumbling old walls of this quaint fort town, as well as enjoy the bohemian boutiques and cafes. There are also many nearby turtle hatcheries that are doing wonderful conservation work, so worth a visit too.

Kandy and the Hill Country

From Colombo you can catch the train to Kandy, home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, housing what people believe to be Buddha’s actual tooth. There are also a number of temples, monasteries and museums to also visit in this picturesque city, all situated around a serene lake. As well as the British Garrison Cemetery and two arts centres, where you can see traditional Kandyan dance performances, fire eating, hot coal walks and many other weird and wonderful activities. From the city you can also take a day trip to the wonderful Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage. Home to around eighty elephants, enjoy opportunities that include bottle feeding baby elephants, 70

Ancient Cities

When visiting any of the Ancient Cities, try to make your way around everything in a day. This is because the entry fees are extortionate, ranging from £10 - £20 each – which is extremely high when compared to similar sights in India and other Asian countries. You can cover each place easily by foot if you set off early. Alternatively you can hire bikes when you get to the towns.

grounds while you’re exploring the site too. A three-hour bus journey from here will take you to Anuradhapura, another former royal capital filled with ruins of palaces, temples, monasteries, water tanks and more. After spending another day covering all the sights on this vast trail, you can take a five-hour train ride back to Colombo for your final days on the island. Alternatively you could easily head towards the east or north, depending on how much time you have.

From Kandy, a two-hour bus journey will take you to Dambulla, famous for its Buddhist cave temples. Filled with paintings and giant Buddha statues, spend the day exploring the ancient temples; before taking a forty minute bus ride to the geological site of Sigiriya. Hike this soaring giant rock, filled with wall carvings, monastery ruins, cave paintings and striking views of the surrounding landscape. The rock is also surrounded by pretty gardens filled with rock formations, bathing pools and an informative museum too. From Dambulla, take the bus to Polonnaruwa, which is just a couple of hours away. Spend the day wandering around this former royal capital, filled with the spectacular ruins of palatial grounds, temples, shrines and monuments. You’ll also come across legions of monkeys roaming the

“Playing music live definitely inspires you to make more music...”

GALANTIS Christian Karlsson and Linus Eklöw are Galantis. While successful in their solo work, they’ve put their creative minds together to give us euphoric electronic tracks and epic live shows. Heading to Australia for the first time as Galantis, we speak to the boys to find out more about the project that’s taking over the world. 72

www.bbmlive.com

INTERVIEWS

What does Galantis mean? We actually have no idea where it came from – the name chose us! Seafox has become a symbol of Galantis, on your album covers, in your videos and part of your live shows; what does she represent? She represents Galantis. She is the face and the story of Galantis. She goes everywhere with us. Tracks like ‘Runaway’ and ‘Peanut Butter Jelly’ are huge, euphoric festival anthems; what inspires such production from you? We initially sensed a large gap in club music, a gap to fill with songs with more than just a line about ”lets move it, move it” – we are looking for a larger range of emotions in the studio. That inspired us to get into the studio at first. Aside from this, it’s hard to pinpoint one thing in daily life that inspires us. It’s not one specific thing – it’s life in general, everything around us. Playing music live definitely inspires you to make more music though. That’s for sure. Your debut set at Coachella is one of the most talked about in festival history; what’s been the craziest moment as Galantis for you so far? We actually always say Coachella was the craziest and biggest moment ever. It was our very first gig, and there’s that moment where you don’t know if anyone will show up, but we walked out to a full tent of fans singing all the words to our songs. We had only released the music two weeks before. It was amazing. A really defining moment for us that we will never forget. You’ll be playing Stereosonic in Australia for the first time this November; can the crowd expect a similarly big production? We’ve been looking forward to coming to Australia for a long time, and we are preparing something really special for the Stereosonic dates. We are bringing new gear, some new toys to make the performance bigger and better, and working on some brand new visual elements. And, of course, Seafox will be with us! We can’t wait! What do you want the crowd to feel when listening to your music and watching you on

the stage? Emotion. Any kind of emotion is good. We want people to be affected. If we can help people stay in the moment and really feel something, it’s a great thing. Is it your first time in Australia as Galantis? What will you be looking to get up to besides the shows? We’ve both been to Australia before as Miike Snow and Style Of Eye, but this will be our first time as Galantis. We have lots of friends in Australia, so there will be some hanging out, but we’re also going to spend some time in the studio working on new music. What other amazing destinations has touring taken you to this year? Too many places to mention… we have been all over the place. But, it’s the first time we are experiencing the world as Galantis and it’s like seeing the world through new eyes – it’s like a completely new experience. We are totally blown away by the fans all around the world – it’s amazing. And we are still exploring... Where will you be seeing in the New Year? We are going to be in Dallas, Texas! What have been your favourite tracks of 2015? Jack U – ‘To U’ Porter Robinson – ‘Flicker (Mat Zo remix)’ Disclosure – ‘Willing & Able’ Jamie xx – ‘Loud Places’ Netsky – ‘Rio’

Solo, you’re both immensely successful, so what drove you to form Galantis? Galantis formed because of a matching energy between us. We clicked instantly in the studio. We started hanging out making music, but we had no idea at the time what it was going to become. It ended up becoming Galantis.

The Coronas Irish quartet, The Coronas, return to Australia this November with new album, ‘The Long Way’. Playing to bigger crowds and popping over to New Zealand for the first time, we got the latest from frontman, Danny O’Reilly. 74

www.bbmlive.com

So you’re in Dublin at the moment… I am. Are you still living in London? Yeah, we love London. I’ve just come back home for a little while. We have a few shows in Dublin, but we really like London. It’s a cool place to live. Did moving to London play a part in the way you work together and the way you created ‘The Long Way’? Absolutely. It was one of the reasons we decided to move there. We wrote our last album in Dingle in County Kerry, and when we started the very early writing sessions for ‘The Long Way’, we went down to Dingle again and wrote a bunch of songs, but we needed a change. We moved to London and by the end of it, only one of the 10 songs that we wrote in Dingle actually made the album. All of the songs improved as soon as we moved to London. We were getting into our comfort zone in Ireland and it probably wasn’t the best creative atmosphere. We also realised that we had to go and meet people and make relationships – so when we moved to London, we signed to a publishing company almost straight away. But there’s so much good music in London, when you hear another band rehearsing it makes you wanna up your game. As your fourth album, what do you want it to say about The Coronas? We definitely think it’s our strongest album – maybe we’re biased! But we didn’t want it to say anything particularly about us as a band other than the fact that we’re a good band that writes good songs. We never really do albums to make a statement – we’re just songwriters and try to write the best songs we can. It definitely plucks at the heartstrings. I’ve always been an honest songwriter, and there was even a moment I had with the lads where I asked them if it was ok to have a love song, and they were like, “Yeah, course!” Our previous album didn’t have any break-up songs, it was a bit happier, and this is a bit more of a break-up album. I’ve always been honest and I’m only comfortable writing about things that are actually going on, so it worked out. You get to promote the album on the sunny shores of Australia in November, how has Down Under treated you previously?

“There’s so much good music in London. It makes you want to up your game...” So good! We went February last year and we didn’t really know what to expect. We had done a small Australian tour about five years before after the first album – we didn’t really know what we were doing! The crowds were amazing last time and we got to do a little bit of radio, as well. I invited a couple of friends who live in Sydney and they were like, “What’s going on? How have you got such a big crowd?!” Thankfully, things are going well and we’ll have the big crowds again and it will grow like it did in Ireland. We’re getting to that stage now where we’re moving up in the theatres. How will you be spending your time away from the stage in Oz? The last time we went, we did four cities in four nights, and the only day off we had was after our last show in Perth. We went to the beach and chilled out. This time, we have a few more free days – which is very exciting! We’re looking forward to some sun – it’s starting to get very cold here in Ireland – and I know by the end of November and beginning of December the weather’s going to be amazing. I absolutely love Melbourne and Sydney, and this is the first time we’re getting over to New Zealand as well, so we’re very excited.

Nicky Night Time

The past 12 months have certainly cemented Nicky Night Time as a big name on the Australian House scene. After achieving critical acclaim with the electropop group Van She, Nick Routledge began DJing under the alias Nicky Night Time, sweeping up an ARIA Award nomination for Best Dance Release for his single ‘Gonna Get Better’ along the way. Not only has he released a new track ‘Flowers’, but he’s also touring extensively around Australia and New Zealand from November to New Year’s Day. Melbourne to play The Party at The Prince on 1st January – that’s a hectic schedule! Are you excited? Yeah it is pretty hectic, then I fly to Melbourne in the morning and helicopter up to Port Sea that night for a gig! Hectic indeed, is the word!

Can you describe the artistic process behind your new release ‘Flowers’? What’s it about? I write most of my vocals with a piano and when we wrote ‘Flowers’ the chords behind the vocals were a lot darker which made the vocals even eerier than they are. It was only when I went back to it 6 months later that I took the chords away and made it into the dance version you hear now.

Do you change your set to suit different audiences and venues or generally stick to the same set list? No I always change depending on the gig or venue and also the crowd. My one pet hate is DJs who are not headlining playing a headline set as a warm up! Don’t do it! I recently supported MK and I was playing at around 123bpm, which meant by the time he got on he could jack up the tempo 1 or 2 just to take the experience up a notch. When you play after some DJs who have it all the way up near 128 and your tracks are all at 125bpm it’s like come on man seriously go be a hero somewhere else.

You’re playing at Cargo Harbour Party in Sydney on 31st December and then heading to

The past year has been really big for you. Is there one moment from the past year that really stands out? I guess the big moments for me were really behind the scenes ya know … Lil breakthroughs like making a track work and enjoying that moment or recording an amazing vocal with someone that you didn’t expect. These are the moments I love. I think celebrating the small things along the way as well as the big things make life more consistent rather than having to endure such big peaks and troughs.

Opiuo Opiuo has taken the music world by storm with his funkadelic hip-hop stylings. The award-winning Kiwi has just dropped an EP with New Zealand’s other favourite sons, drum and bass lords, Shapeshifter. This comes just in time for Opiuo’s performance with his live band on New Year’s Day at Let Them Eat Cake in Melbourne. You recently dropped your ‘Slug A Bug’ EP with Shapeshifter. How did that collaboration come about? Did you work with Shapeshifter in the studio? We’d been in contact for a couple of years with the idea that we should do something. Then when the time was right they asked me over to their Auckland studio this past winter. We spent a week together and made the basis to the EP you hear today. They’re amazing inspiring humans so it was a real pleasure to hang out and make some music. When it comes to your solo work as Opiuo and The Opiuo Band, how much crossover is there? Originally there wasn’t much, I was just writing the music and then getting musicians in to play exactly what I wanted. Now we are more established as a real band, I’ve been including all of them in some way in the recording process, even some of the writing process as well. I really want both projects to remain individual, but have some real crossover potential as well. They’ll always be two totally different experiences live, while maintaining what’s true to Opiuo: bass, funk, fun, party. Would you play the new EP with Shapeshifter with your band and try and adapt it to a live performance or do you keep those two entities separate? Absolutely. We’ve already worked out how to adapt a lot of it. The music is far too much party to be left behind. And live – it’s gonna be fun.

Speaking of The Opiuo Band, you guys are going to be gearing up to play Let Them Eat Cake on New Year’s Day. What can we expect from you? New stuff? Old stuff? Surprises? Plenty of new, plenty of classics, some definite surprises in the works already. It’s one of the sets we’re all looking forward to the most. I can’t wait to bust what we got. Is there anyone on the line-up you’re looking forward to mingling with backstage? Or even just checking out on the day? Slum Village are old heroes of mine so I’m stoked about that. I think we might even play the same stage as them (one for the books). I have so many local friends that are dropping tunes too so it’s going to be great to catch up with all of them again! Honestly, the Melbourne music scene is so rich and I often enjoy some of the local talent the most! Opiuo x Shapeshifter ‘Slug a Bug’ EP is available now from iTunes. Catch The Opiuo Band on NYD alongside Jon Hopkins, Four Tet, Daniel Avery and more, at Let Them Eat Cake Festival in Werribee Mansion, Melbourne. Shapeshifter will perform at Northern Bass NYD Festival in NZ.

A brave American woman has spoken of her trauma and torment after being regularly abducted by alien lizardmen in the 80s, forced to have sex with them and then, in a macabre coup de gras, made to stack crates for her reptilian captors. Niara Terela Isley, a former U.S. air force radar, is just one of several nut jobs quoted by Alien UFO Sightings in an expose of the American military’s secret moon bases – where reptiles rule, and humans are passed around like sex toys. Isley believes her mind was wiped after the lizard orgies in 1980 (described in her books) – and she only remembered under hypnosis. ‘I was very poorly fed and worked hard during the day cycle, operating some kind of electronic equipment for excavation at times, and doing physical manual labor at others, such as lifting and stacking boxes,’ she wept. ‘Worst of all, I was used for sex during what passed for night there, from man to man.’

A piece of advice for anyone hoping to sell unusual or easily identifiable stolen items on Craigslist – don’t sell unusual or easily identifiable stolen items on Craigslist. Because, you know, the legal owners might be looking out for it and use it as a way of trapping and arresting you. That’s exactly what happened in San Bernardino, California, last month when the rightful owners of a stolen pure-bred bulldog pup noticed one for sale on the website for $2500. Gunny the dog was taken during a strong-arm robbery. Sheriff’s deputies watched as the owners met with the suspects, and one of the owners immediately identified the dog. Minutes later the dognappers were in jail.

Up where the sword don’t shine

Woman orders a meat lovers with nothing on

We’re all familiar with the Arthurian legend of the sword in the stone but the old tales may have had one crucial detail incorrect.

The crazy sub lover even pulled down ceiling tiles and finally emerged from the bog completely naked. It’s unclear how attractive she was and if she had a nice body – probably not if she’s a junky skank. Ironically, the last time BBM was on the toilet for two hours we produced a footlong too.

And if that’s true, then a proctologist in China may now be the rightful king of England after successfully managing to pull out… (*pause for effect and add echo filter*)… the sword in the anus!

Terrorist warning a hairy situation

It all began when a 54-year-old man working in Hangzhou City, who has not been named, decided to cut off his own piles by sticking a huge knife up his bum. Shockingly, this proved to be a bad idea. Due to the awkward position of the piles, he was forced to twist and turn in a bid to perform his self-surgery. Sadly, he slipped and, well, up it went. Worst of all, the knife was serrated. Yeush. In fairness, I bet he’s not worried about his piles anymore. The sword itself was some type of key chain measuring about 10 centimetres long. It was a proper broad fantasystyle scimitar too, with a few pointed parts that could easily hook into flesh. He told medics that he was initially too embarrassed to ask for treatment, so tried to cut the piles out at home. A short time later, he phoned in work telling staff: “I can’t come into work today. I have a sword stuck in my bum.” A luckless co-worker then went to his home and bumrushed the injured chap to the Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital to have the blood-soaked sword removed. And to add insult to anal injury, cameras were allowed into the treatment room and his unfortunate incident was aired on TV to warn others. So remember kids, if you ever get piles go see a doctor rather than stick a serrated sword up your clacker.

A woman in Alaska went bat-shit crazy in a branch of Subway, stripping off her clothes, throwing furniture around, and locking herself in a toilet for two hours while high on synthetic marijuana. We don’t like the cheese they use in there either but that reaction is just a tad extreme.

We’ve heard of racial profiling, but in the first instance of facial profiling we’ve come across, a group of bearded hipsters in Sweden claim they were mistaken for ISIS terrorists by police. Sounds like the cops will have their work cut out during Movember. Andreas Fransson was with his friends outside the ruins of Brahehus castle in southern Sweden when two police officers turned up. “They told us that a motorist thought he had seen a gathering of ISIS terrorists,” said Fransson, whose Bearded Villains organisation does charity work. He acknowledged that the club’s flag – two crossed sabres on a black background – could easily be confused with that of the militant group. “We belong to a club that is part of an association created in the United States, called the Bearded Villains and which fights against injustice, homophobia, racism and oppression,” he said. So it’s just the flag that’s similar then.

Margot Robbie is in like Flynn

When the Wright brothers said they were going to build a flying machine, people laughed. When Neil Armstrong said he would walk on the moon, people scoffed. And when BBM said we would one day see Cheryl Cole naked, we were told to leave the changing rooms and banned from Tyneside Swimming Baths. The point is, there’s nothing wrong with chasing your dreams (despite what the judge and restraining order say), so we say a big “go on son” to Irish hurling star Jason Flynn - who somewhat optimistically asked Hollywood starlet Margot Robbie if she fancied being his date for the GAA/ GPA All Star awards.

Chance to score with Getafe

Hello ladies, fancy shagging a middle-aged Spaniard with a beer gut and a season ticket to a shit football club? Well this is your lucky day! In a bid to boost their flogging fan numbers, La Liga whipping boys Getafe have launched a smartphone app that helps fans hook up at matches. The desperate club said its “Getafinder” works like Tinder in helping users meet potential mates nearby, but it will only work near the side’s Alfonso Perez stadium in the Madrid suburbs. “Getafe is historically one of the football clubs with the fewest fans and the most empty stands in the first division,” the club pleaded in a sad statement. “With this app you can seek out the Getafe fan you like best in complete anonymity. And if someone you like likes you too, make a match and procreate!” Positioning software on the app makes it operative just near the stadium “so that it will only be used by supporters of the club”. Although with an average match day attendance of just 9000 what’s the betting that most of them know each other anyway. And it’s not exactly a female friendly sport in Spain either. It’s only a matter of time before the randy Spaniards start squaring up to each other like hormonal bulls fighting for the few goodlooking ladies in the crowd. Of course, it could also have the opposite effect – forcing Getafe fans to go gay in search of sex. Where’s your Getafe babies then eh? They’ll have to change the name to Getagrindr. On the plus side, they might get to sign stars like Sol Campbell, Graeme Le Saux and Luke Shaw. 82

Galway player Flynn is among the forwards nominated for the awards. “Well @MargotRobbie,” he tweeted. “By any chance would you come to the All-Stars with me? Badly Stuck for a Date.” Sure, his question was blatantly ignored, but with the awards ceremony not taking place until November 6, there’s still time for Flynn’s wet dream to come true. In the meantime, he can keep watching that bit in Wolf of Wall Street where she plays with herself. Or the bit where she does a full frontal. Or that bit where... actually, we’re just nipping to the DVD store.

United by a shrewd way of getting easy money

Ever wanted to go to the pub? Well now you can, thanks to one plucky Manchester United fan who is making the seemingly impossible dream of having a drink in a pub come true for scores of lucky tourists - and all for the low, low price of £20. Not only does that price guarantee you entry into the pub (which, we should stress, is actually free to get into for the public - just like every other pub in England) but it also allows you to sing songs with United fans before a game (again, this is free in the real world), and for another £20 he offers entry into the National Football Museum (again, free to the public). It’s all through the site partnerfan.com, in which fan Stephen Howson offers ‘personal hospitality’ packages in which he promises to deliver a ‘great match day experience’ - complete with photos of smiling (and presumably gullible) Asian tourists.

Referee becomes the equaliser

Let’s play “You’re the ref”. You’ve used your yellow card, but there’s still trouble flaring. You’ve used your red card, but that only seemed to make matters worse. What should a referee pull out of his pocket next if there’s still trouble a-brewing? In Brazilian Gabriel Murta’s case - a gun. The trigger-happy amateur referee whipped out his piece (so to speak) in an amateur game in Brumadinho, in Brazil’s southeast, after feeling threatened during a tense match. As a result, Murta - who is a policeman in his full-time job - will undergo a psychological assessment. Murta claims he was kicked and punched by a player from Amantes da Bola, one of the teams involved. He hit back action-movie style, liberating his little friend and looking as though he was going to use it.

Bunch of Dorks cause ruckus

When people talk about the great rivalries of world football, you hear about Liverpool v Manchester United, the Superclasico of South America, Celtic v Rangers, the Real Madrid-Barcelona El Clasico. Well now you can add Abbey Rangers v Dorking to the mix, after a tense Combined Counties League Division One game had to be called off at half-time because fans got into the changing rooms and started fighting with players. “The scenes involving supporters and players in the tunnel and dressing room at half-time during the game between Abbey Rangers FC and Dorking FC have no place in football and the referee rightly abandoned the game,” said a statement by Dorking. “The Board, management and players of Dorking Football Club will cooperate fully with all investigations that are held.”

KFC advert is finger mickin’ good

triumphantly above his head Popeye-style. However Fanning’s mother Elizabeth Osborne and the World Surf League don’t see anything funny about the spoof. “I think it is very disrespectful,” Fanny’s mum Elizabeth Osborne said. “They’ve put a lookalike in the video. It really brings back a lot of trauma for everybody who has been attacked by a shark.” Or anyone who’s eaten at KFC for that matter. The Colonel has a lot to answer for.

Living in fantasy land

A self-appointed fantasy football “stats guru” has raised his hand as possibly the saddest sports fan in the UK - which, as you can imagine, is a pretty big field to choose from - after writing an 812-word letter to the Premier League to complain about the recorded times for substitutes coming on/off the pitch. Sad git Steve Gothreb says when a player is subbed off, the time of his departure from the field should be rounded up if more than 30 seconds of that minute has passed.

The family of Mick Fanning, the surfer whose cowardly king hit on a shark went viral a couple of months ago, have shaken their fist in a comedy style at KFC, following a spoof advert mocking the incident.

The reason for his pedantry? He’s pissed off that Southampton’s Cedric Soares was not given more points after playing 59 minutes, 41 seconds against Leicester. If he’d played the full hour, he would have got five more points.

In the ad, a lookalike of Fanning (let’s call him Fanny), is seen being attacked by a shark as he surfs into a wave. Seconds later, Fanny re-emerges from the water with the shark held

The good news is he got a response. The bad news is, it was automated and basically told him to go do one.

CRYSTAL BALLS Scorpio

A protracted legal battle over naming rights between star sign Scorpio and German rock veterans The Scorpions finally comes to an end with a settlement out of court. As part of the deal, all people born under the Scorpio sign are legally required to wear promotional Scorpions T-shirts on weekends. Also, every November 9th, you have to whistle the start of “Wind of Change” to mark the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Gemini

Prompted by the success of The Scorpions in their zodiacbased legal battle (see above), 90s twin-themed boy band Gemini also attempt to initiate a similar naming rights dispute in court, hoping to kick-start a career that stalled after their first hit “Even Though You Broke My Heart” failed to bother the charts. Thankfully, they are laughed out of court by the judge who says he’s never heard of them. But the laughter stops when the desperate duo threaten to release a new single if their demands are not met. Only time will tell if they are serious about carrying out this atrocity.

Virgo

A serious blow to the head leaves you only able to communicate through the medium of interpretive dance. After being released from hospital, it takes 10 minutes of flailing your arms and hips around to the sound of Enya’s Orinoco Flow to order a coffee. It takes a further five minutes of pirouettes and frowning to answer the question ‘Do you want milk?’ 84

Aquarius

Despite the sniggers and derogatory comments from your mates, you decide to spend $10,000 doing an acoustic version of Taylor Swift’s mega hit album 1989. When someone tells you that Ryan Adams has already done one, to widespread critical acclaim, you have a rethink. A week later, you release your acoustic version of “It’s Chico Time” by X Factor also-ran Chico. There’s 10 grand you’ll never see again.

Aries

It might be time to check if you need a prescription for your eyesight. This month, for example, instead of signing up for Mo-vember, you accidentally register for Blow-vember, a charity event where people donate $50 to a charity of your choice if you give them a blowjob. Never one to shy away from a good cause, you manage to raise $350 - plus $7.50 in tips.

Pisces

As Cher once crooned on her 80s hit Turn Back Time: “Words are like weapons, they wound sometimes”. Be sure to remind your friends of this sage piece of advice when you get your haircut at that $10 barber this month. You’ll wish you had alopecia.

Leo

After a debauched night out in the city, you wake up to find you’ve been stranded in a NASA space station on Mars, 34million miles away from civilisation. Amazingly you manage to survive for a full year on the Red Planet by using your own poo to grow vegetables. You even manage to wire up a transmitter so that it picks up radio signals from Earth. When

you realise you can only get Triple M, however, thoughts turn to taking your own life.

Capricorn

After 12-hours straight of being physically and verbally abused by your partner, your body bruised and broken from repeated beatings, you finally remember the safety word. Next time make it something easier to remember.

Libra

Another year older, eh? What happened to those once youthful features of yours? Now you just look like a four-monthold apple with a face drawn on it. You smell as bad too.

Taurus

You wake up one day to find you’ve switched bodies with former East 17 bad boy Brian Harvey. You spend the next few weeks rambling incoherently about the music business, snorting cocaine and eating jacket potatoes while running over yourself in your own car.

Sagittarius

After a couple of weeks of letting your personal hygiene slip, you’re surprised to see strangers giving you winks and telling you to “keep it up”. Eventually you realise it’s because they think your facial hair is part of the Movember challenge. Funny if you’re a bloke, not so funny if you’re a woman.

Cancer

After reading this horoscope, you come to the realisation that reading horoscopes is a waste of time. And so the paradox begins.

ASK CRYSTAL

Dear Crystal, I’m a man in my early 30s. I play football, love my girlfriend and enjoy a drink or two with my mates down the pub of a weekend. For all intents and purposes, I’m a perfectly normal member of society. But I hold a terrifying dark secret that, if revealed, I fear will lead to me being ridiculed and shunned by my friends and family. For you see Crystal, to my eternal shame, I just don’t get what all the fuss is about with the new Star Wars film.

Friends, co-workers, and pretty much everyone I know seems to talk about it as though it’s the second coming. And sure I enjoyed the original Star Wars trilogy as much as the next lad. But when I hear people talking about how excited they are, and how websites are crashing because of the demand for tickets, I just feel dead inside. It wouldn’t surprise me if some of my mates had actually masturbated over that new trailer. I’ll see the film at some stage, but frankly I’m more interested in seeing the new Coen Brothers movie instead. Am I a freak? Yours, Johnny

Dear Johnny, No you’re not a freak, you just have a longer memory than some of your friends, who probably got just as excited before the Phantom Menace came out and almost nuked the whole franchise. I’m sure it won’t be “that” shit - but it’s not going to be as good as the originals either. How could it be, half the appeal is the nostalgia. Also, this is JJ Abrams in the director’s chair. Does anyone actually remember anything about the last Star Trek movie, apart from the fact Sherlock Holmes was in it? The other reason you’re not excited is because you’re no longer a 12-year-old, which is the only age someone should be this excited about a movie. Well done. If you really want to impress your friends, here’s a little bit of Star Wars trivia no one knows. George Lucas got the idea for Chewbacca after going down on me round the back of the trash compacter set back in the 70s. That’s where the phrase “growler” comes from.

JOKES I’ve been paying a midget to stand by and keep time while I practise the piano. I love my new metrognome. Brad, Paddington Adele releases a surprise single and is already on her way to another number one. Typical of her to turn up out of the blue, uninvited. Harry, Cottesloe I have my first IBS anonymous meeting next week. To be honest, I’m shitting myself. Allie, Brisbane Getting a tactical nuke on Call of Duty is the best feeling in life. Much better than having sex. Probably. Gareth, Kings Cross I can remember being sat in a Norfolk cinema watching Back

To The Future and thinking, “Fucking hell, he’s going to end up shagging his Mum!” Luckily the usher spotted him fingering her and chucked them out. Tom, St Kilda

guilty of conspiracy to supply millions of pounds worth of counterfeit Viagra. The judge described them as hardened criminals. Pete, Darwin

I got fired on my first day as a bingo caller, I think some members complained of my inappropriate bingo lingo... In particular... “If there’s hair on the muff, then fair enough, 15.” Terry, Windsor

A bloke is driving happily along in his car with his girlfriend when he’s pulled over by the police. The police officer approaches him and asks, “Have you been drinking Sir?” “No. Why?” replies the man. “Was I all over the road?” “No,” replies the officer, “you were driving splendidly. It was the ugly fat bird in the passenger seat that made me suspicious.” Ben, Yallingup

A teacher in class notices a little puddle below Suzie’s chair. “Ah, Suzie, why didn’t you put your hand up?” “I did, Miss, but it just ran through me fucking fingers.” Mel, Fremantle Five people have been found
