Harlequin Inn As Sydney’s premier rugby pub, there’s simply no better place to watch the sport than at Harlequin Inn. Home to the All Blacks Supporters Club Sydney, you’re guaranteed a great atmosphere when any rugby game is on. The Harlequin supports all international rugby teams and has some great rugby history adorning their walls. There are four giant projector screens, 13 large screen TVs around the venue – including in the outside smoking area – plus the food’s not bad either: they’ve got $11 curries available for lunch and dinner every night and, on rugby game nights, the $4 Snag BBQ is always pumping. What’s on: Rugby Championship 2013 Bledisloe Cup The Ashes (all Ashes games will be shown until midnight on the large projector screens, though it may be hard to find a screen on rugby nights!) The Premiership is Back! Well folks, it’s that time of the year again. Wayne Rooney is spouting his usual crap, new managers and players are pushing out all the youth from first teams, and Suarez is approaching biting season. Yes, yes, the Premier League season starts in August; with more live coverage than ever before! This summer has been all about the strikers; as Luis Suarez and Wayne Rooney are linked with big money moves down south to Arsenal and Chelsea. Manchester City bolstered their squad with Stevan Jovetic from Fiorentina and Alberto Negredo from Sevilla. But it’s almost as if all the big teams are brand new, as both Manchester clubs have new managers, and Jose Mourinho is back at Chelsea and is looking to claim some scalps. But with Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City, and former Everton manager David Moyes taking over the huge gap left by Sir Alex Ferguson, don’t count on any referees being paid off this season, as we think Moyes has a way to go. It’s set to be an exciting opening weekend for the big clubs, as Arsenal entertain Aston Villa, Manchester United travel to Swansea, and Mourinho’s blues return as hosts to newly promoted Hull City. Steve Bruce’s side had a blinding end of season run and ol’ pork pie Brucey will be looking for Hull to be as big as Manchester United (joke!).

So, whether you’re looking for the perfect hangover cure, wanting to indulge, or you’re just a foodie looking for some exceptional burgers, you’ve come to the right place. With the city’s boutique burger bars competing for the most eye-catching, mouth-watering, heart attack-inducing burgers, we’ve narrowed down our favourites. MOO Gourmet Burger

BUSH TUCKER BAZAAR Forget your bog standard roast, and start tucking into some real Aussie food. With menus featuring crocodile, kangaroo and crickets, here’s our pick of Sydney restaurants where you can get your hands on some real Australian delicacies... Purple Goanna The only purple patch in Redfern, Purple Goanna is a café that offers a unique twist on bush tucker. They call it ‘modern Australian’ – creating meals using traditional Aboriginal Australian meats, spices and fruits, and then fusing it with Western style cuisine. Open from Monday to Friday, 7am3pm, pay them a visit and prepare to let your taste buds explore!

We like to start our day off right with their Big Bush Breakfast: You get two eggs – as you like – rindless bacon, toast, side of baked beans, fresh avocado, fried onion, fried tomato…oh, and a side of kangaroo. And all of this only costs $16. Lunch is where it gets really interesting down at Purple Goanna. You’ve got your choice of burger – kangaroo, crocodile or barramundi – for $9, served with their ‘special sauce’ (you can also add chips for $3 or go all in with chips and a drink for just $14). Or, for when we’re feeling extra adventurous, it’s the Crocodile Boscaiola – it’s boscaiola sauce infused with bush herbs and spices, and a croc tail fillet served on fettuccine for a mere $12. An old Purple Goanna favourite though has to be the Roo Bolognese – traditional bolognese sauce with kangaroo mince on spaghetti for just $12. Rockpool on George Rockpool on George is the fine dining jewel in the historic Rocks area of Sydney. With almost 25 years in the business, this elegant establishment is a much celebrated restaurant, one where they pride themselves on the use of Australian and the world’s best produce, an award-winning wine list and Sydney’s most polished service. They’re open for lunch on Fridays, and for dinner Tuesday through Saturday. As we said, Rockpool is a fine dining establishment;
12 www.bbmlive.com
there’s no ‘dinner’ here, just ‘courses’. For your ‘first course’, we’d recommend the mud crab and stir-fried milk with bacon or the pig’s head served with fried rice, king prawn and pine nuts. For your ‘second course’, we’d go with the partridge with a potato-bone marrow fondant and Madeira sauce, and finally for your main course, it has to be the pigeon with corn, scallops and eggplant. Enjoy 2 courses for $100, 3 courses for $135 or 4 courses for $155. 107 George Street, The Rocks rockpool.com/Sydney
Billy Kwong Opened in 2000, Billy Kwong restaurant sprung from the idea of recreating a traditional Chinese eating house and, while 13 is usually an unlucky number for some, the success of the restaurant has clearly bucked that trend! At Billy Kwong, you can try a big range of native Australian produce, including warrigal greens, bunya nuts, old man saltbush and muntries, all cooked Chinese style. For $21, you could start with the crispy cricket and prawn wontons, or there’s the sung choi bao of wallaby fillet for $29. Main options include the crispy-skin native ‘yolla’ bird with chilli-cricket sauce for $28, the wallaby tail with black bean & chilli for $32, or the Cantonese-style fried rice with roasted meal worms, crushed wood ‘roaches’ and a chilli-cricket sauce for $15. Boy, are our mouths watering as we type! Shop 3, 355 Crown Street, Surry Hills kyliekwong.org/BillyKwongs.aspx

MELBOURNE
BUSH TUCKER BAZAAR
One can not visit Australia without sampling some proper bush tucker. Of course, you could go all Bear Grylls and scrape a koala off of the highway, but why not explore some of these Melbourne eateries and sample some authentic Australian cuisine. The Portland Hotel
Located on Russell Street in the heart of Melbourne, The Portland Hotel – or The Portland Hotel & James Squire Brewhouse, to give it its official title – is a popular restaurant, serving both contemporary and classic dishes with an Australian twist. The Portland Hotel also operates the only working microbrewery in Melbourne’s CBD, where you can taste their unique craft beers and take a fascinating brewery tour to learn how the brewing process works – so you can really make a day of it! But first things first: let’s eat. From their Small Bites options, you’ve got shark and Morton Bay bug fishcakes with tomato and red onion salsa for $15.50, or the crocodile and prawn spring rolls with lettuce and mint salad for $17. If you really wanna make your tongue shimmy’n’shake, go for the pan-fried emu dumplings with pickled seaweed for $17 – yum. Of their Bigger Dishes, there’s the Apricot and James Squire IPA braised camel osso bocco with harissa mash, French beans and a honey & mint jus, and this’ll set you back only $27. Alternatively, you could go for the roasted kangaroo fillet, served with warm chorizo and kipfler potato salad for $23. 115-127 Russell Street, Melbourne portlandhotel.com.au
Charcoal Lane
In a 149-year-old building in the inner-city suburb of Fitzroy, lies Charcoal Lane: a vibrant restaurant that always offers high quality, modern Australian cuisine. Owned and operated by Mission Australia, a non-profit community group, Charcoal Lane also provides accredited education in hospitality for historically disadvantaged Indigenous Australians. Kick off with an entrée of wallaby tartare with horseradish potato salad for $16, followed by a main of either spiced kangaroo loin for $32 or kangaroo burger served with fries for $18. 136 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne charcoallane.com.au
Brambuk Bushfoods Cafe
Brambuk – only three hours west of Melbourne – not only provides the very best information of the Grampians National Park, showing you where to go and what to see, but their cafe is pretty topnotch too! Relax with mountain views and enjoy bushfoods from their extensive menu. Served from 11am-3pm daily, Brambuk’s Bushfoods Café is overflowing with choice. For $12, you can go for a standard kangaroo steak sandwich; for $14, they’ve got crocodile and prawn agnoloni, which is pasta filled with – you guessed it – crocodile and prawns with a creamy pesto sauce; or there’s emu sausages on a garlic and bush herb mash also for $14. Or there’s the ‘a little bit of everything’ Bush Food Platter, with ‘everything’ being kangaroo, emu, crocodile, wild duck, two bush food chutneys and a garden salad all for just $19 (serves two people). A New Taste In Melbourne’s
Mouth Blondie is Melbourne’s Arts Precinct’s newest restaurant and bar. Sharing its building with the Melbourne Recital Centre, it is an exquisitely intimate venue, perfect for a pre-theatre dinner or cocktail. On arrival, it is hard to decide what to focus on - the divine smell of the food, or the modern-yet-classic design, or even pretty finishing touches on the tables – it’s all consumingly enticing. The atmosphere is very quiet and relaxed, and it gives the impression of a sophisticated place for sophisticated people. This makes it appealing to those who want to steer away from the crowds of Southbank’s busy waterside restaurant precinct as it is only a short walk away. With French-influenced Asian cuisine on offer, Blondie has been open for just over three months

and boasts an ever-changing menu. Right now, some of the delicacies on offer include a whole snapper, (recommended to share), tortellini and some very unique, mouth-watering desserts. With main meals starting from anywhere up from $30, it’s advisable to visit on payday, but with beef eye fillet with miso mushroom puree, Jerusalem artichoke, mustard brulee and bone marrow cigar on offer, how can you deprive yourself? The lunch menu also displays an Asian twist on some classics that are a little more pocketfriendly with prices starting from $12. Some of what’s on offer include a beef burger with Thai chutney, Fish n’ Chips with sumac, and crispy squid with a peanut, chilli-honey and cucumber relish. Certainly worth a try for a worker’s lunch or business meeting, if you fancy a change from the ordinary pub grub. And, what’s more - Blondie is also about to start offering breakfast, so keep a look out on the website for that tantalising menu to be revealed. This venue can be what you make it - romantic, fun, extravagant or a pretty good deal. It caters for any occasion from a relaxing evening drink with friends, or a celebratory three-course meal. With its location, it certainly is a great place to visit before or after a show at any of the Arts Precinct’s theatres nearby, so we’d recommend factoring in a chow down at Blondie’s for a special night out! Overground Adventure...
Broome to Ningaloo
From Broome to Ningaloo and everything in between, here we uncover the wonders of Western Australia, all ready and waiting for you to explore...
TRAVEL AUSTRALIA
Heading out of the Kimberley region into Pilbara and reaching the Gold Coast, you are welcome to experience the extraordinary Horizontal Falls, the serene Dales Gorge and the underwater world of the Ningaloo reef. Offering indigenous culture and history, all these natural attractions are dotted around the various national parks, including Karlamilyi, Millstream-Chichester and Karijini, and surrounding the old mining towns of Newman and Marble Bar. Thought the eastern coast had the crème de la crème of activities, locations and tourist attractions? Think again.
Broome is a great platform to head off to the surrounding attractions from. So if you want to start off your journey with a bang, take a trip to the astonishing Horizontal Falls. If you thought all waterfalls fell from a steep cliff to a pool below, think twice! Intense tides that flow through two parallel cliff gorges in Talbot Bay result in horizontal tides hence the name. There are a number of tours that will take you here, all varying in price, so make sure you do your research before setting off!
The north entrance to Karlamilyi is from Marble Bar, and westerly is Newman. Ideal places to fill up your water supply, or even have a cheeky beer at one of the pubs or hotels, makes knowing the locations of these vital to travellers. Both are mining towns; learn of their history at the Comet Gold Mine and Tourist Centre or the Outdoor Mining Museum, or visit one of their surprising natural attractions. Marble Bar is surrounded by creeks including Brockman, Eight Mile and Yandicoogina, as well as rivers Shaw, Coongan and Talga. It is the Jasper Bar that runs along the Coongan River that gave the town its name, as inhabitants originally believed it was marble. The A-Class reserve, just a few minutes from the town centre, is a highly valued spot. Including the beautiful Chinamen’s Pool and Picnic Area, the reserve spans the Coongan River and is perfect for picnicking and taking a refreshing dip. This waterhole is poignant to the town which holds the record for the longest heatwave in the world. For a consecutive 160 days between 1923 and 1924, temperatures breached 100˚F, earning itself the title as ‘hottest town in the world’.
Karlamilyi
Marble Bar, Newman is adorned with a cool
is the largest national park, and probably the most remote, within Pilbara. There are a range of lakes within Karlamilyi National Park - including Dora, Blanche and Auld - but there’s only a substantial amount of water after a very wet season. If you want to make sure you get your feet (and everything else) wet, pay a visit to the Desert Queen Baths within the Throssell Ranges. Entering the park from the north, via the small mining town of Marble Bar, a rough, narrow 18km track will lead you to the campsite of the baths, for which a 4WD is the only option. While there’s potential for eight pools, only four are permanent due to the seasons and are accessible by swimming from one to the other, or clambering around the edges. It’s well worth the effort; ‘Kangaroo Pool’ contains unique rock art, or petroglyphs, that are only visible by walking around the gorge, and ‘3 Goanna’s Pool’ has three goanna petroglyphs - hence the name - but these can only be seen during sunset. This pool provides a good source of water and perfect for a refreshing dip on a blisteringly hot day. Stretching 1.2 million hectares, Karlamilyi is one of the lesser visited areas of Australia, so these idyllic pools remain untouched and undisturbed.
22 www.bbmlive.com
oasis in the form of the Opthalmia Dam, perfect for a cool-down and recreational afternoon before the sun sets. Newman also has the addition of the mountain of the same name, which offers views of the Opthalmia Ranges and the lush colours of wildflower between July and September. These examples of water and vegetation are few and far between in the Pilbara outback, so make use of them when you can.
Port Headland
- a three hour drive through the wildnerness north of Marble Bar, presents the renowned Eighty Mile Beach, which is exactly as it sounds. Eighty Miles of pristine white sand and blue waters, catch your dinner fresh from the Indian Ocean and camp under the stars. The huge tides of the northwest are a sight to see, as are the resulting tidal flights etched into the sand. For respite from the challenges of the dry inland, spend a few days in Port Hedland, either chilling out on the beach or learning the history and culture of the area from the Heritage Trail or at the Dalgety House Museum.
Karijini
and Millstream-Chichester lie further west. Just under three hours from Newman - and just under four from Port Hedland - Karijini is an
adventurer’s dream. There are things to see and do here that are not only unique to the state, but of the entire country. If you only have time for one, it has to be Dales Gorge; you get three highlights in one, with the popular Fortescue Falls, Fern Pool and Circular Pool. A refreshing dip in the crystal clear waters, surrounded by two billion year old rock formations, will make you forget all about the testing drive here. You should give yourself two hours to walk from the provided car park through the gorge, but the inviting waters will be so tempting, you’ll end up wanting to spend the whole day swimming and bathing. Trust us: you will be in no hurry to get back. From low to high ground, take the scenic walk up Mount Bruce to grab priceless views of Karijini and Pilbara. At 1,235m, it is Western Australia’s second highest mountain, so you’d be lucky to get such an outlook anywhere else on your travels. Remember to take physical memories of your adventure with a camera – you’ll be kicking yourself if you neglect to bring one.
Millstream-Chichester National Park
is north of Karijini. It serves as a refreshing change from the rocky terrain that you’ve experienced so far, with its inviting pools lined with trees and regular, winged visitors. Python Pool is a popular location to relax; the jagged ochre cliffs that surround it are a perfect backdrop for a swim and afternoon picnic. Not one for sitting around? The 8km camel trail begins at the pool and ends at Mount Herbert, with the Chichester Ranges, McKenzie Spring and blooming flora in between. You can also drive to the base of the mountain on a separate track and climb the 367m to the summit. As with everywhere in Western Australia, you must be a determined and experienced traveller to survive Millstream-Chichester, but you will be rewarded with an adventure to remember. There are plenty of camping bases including Stargazers and Crossing Pool, permits for which can be purchased from the nearest towns’ - Karratha and Roebourne - visitor centres. These two towns - as well as Dampier Port - are precious to the North West’s coastline, acting as a base for all travellers and gateways to the most idyllic parts of the world, including the Burrup Peninsula and Dampier Archipelago. Enter Roebourne and you’d be forgiven for thinking that time’s stood still.
Karratha is growing rapidly as the heart of the West Pilbara Coast; it is well located, whether you want to take a day trip to the Dampier, head into the wilderness of the Karijini or Millstream-Chichester, drive the North-West Coastal Highway to Port Hedland or Broome, or board a flight to Perth. Its 20,000 strong population, as well as the dining and shopping opportunities, are a warm welcome after the struggles of the outback. This growing mining town is abundant with accommodation, from budget to luxury. Comfort Inn and Suites Karratha provide modern apartments with a kitchen/diner and internet access for $295 per night for the first seven days, $275 after the first week, and $250 after a month. Ibis Styles Karratha features 60 rooms with balconies, a bar, a swimming pool and barbeque area, just five kilometres from the airport. All rooms are standard with a queen-size bed, some with an extra single bed, from $206 per night. However long you stay at Karratha, dedicate a day or two for a trip to the Burrup Peninsula and the Dampier Archipelago. Holiday like a movie star on the cleanest, whitest, most exotic and secluded beaches you can imagine, view Aboriginal rock art dating back tens of thousands of years, and swim with a stunning variety of marine life. Due to the climate and habitat, plants have been able to flourish and animals have congregated here, so much so that 30% of all living creatures in the Pilbara region are found here. The list includes the northern quoll, Rothschild’s rock-wallaby, echidna and the Pilbara dive python.
The Dampier Port is the gateway to the 42 islands that make up the Archipelago. Never mind a sweeping one-day visit, you could spend a whole season island-hopping, snorkelling, swimming, sunbathing, catching dinner and camping on one of the hundreds of beaches. The whole of Angel Island, Gidley Island and Collier Rocks have camping available, as well as all beaches on Dolphin Island except the south-east. To check all permitted camps, visit the Department of Environment and Conservation website, and make sure you have all the supplies you’ll need to survive on the islands, including drinking water and sun protection. The surrounding sea is a hub of wildlife including manta rays, bottlenose dolphins and the endangered dugong. In the winter, look out for humpback whales migrating to temperate subtropical waters for breeding, and spot the colourful birds that flock to the island for ideal protection all year round. Not only are these islands easy on the eye, they are also drenched in history. West Lewis Island is believed to have ruins of one of the early pastoral settlements, Malus Island features old whaling and pearling stations from 1870-72, and Enderby Island boasts the resting place for many historical boats and planes.
To see the islands, take a tour with Discovery Cruising on their 12-metre vessel, Blue Marlin. Setting off from Hampton Harbour, choose from a range of trips depending on your preference, such as Day, Sunset, Fishing or Overnight. If you want to head off on your own, drive a trailer boat to swim and snorkel where you please. For this, a $200 security deposit is required.
The Montebello Islands are just four hours
from the Dampier range of islands and are made up of 100 limestone islands and islets that make up the Montebello Islands. Catch your dinner, snorkel the pristine waters and make your bed on the clean, white sand that is home to what is believed to be Western Australia’s first ever shipwreck, the sunken Tyrall from 1622. Barrow, the second largest island in Western Australia, lies south of the Montebello Islands. This unique island is severely protected due to the wildlife, as it contains 22 species of mammal, reptile, bird and flora that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. The highly-conserved fauna includes the black-flanked rock wallaby, boodie, spectacled hare-wallaby and golden bandicoot.
snorkelling cruise with company Ningaloo Whale Shark Swim and take their Eco Wildlife Tour. Get picked up at 7.30am and briefed on what to expect, board the dive boat from Bundegi Coastal Marine Park, and be snorkelling in the Ningaloo by 10am. Manta-ray cruises between July and November are highly recommended by the tour operator, but whale watching from August to November is also a valuable experience. If you’re a little wary of sea creatures or an unconfident swimmer, take it one step at a time, with friends or family to support you. Just don’t be a wuss! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat, so make the most of it before it’s too late. Whether you’re an adventurous mountain-climber, wild explorer, deep-sea diver or coastline wanderer, on dry land, sandy beaches or within 50 shades of blue, “great” doesn’t quite do this Outback adventure justice. Accept the challenge and find out for yourself!
Once you’ve had enough dipping and diving, embark on the seven-hour drive west from Karratha -stopping at Onslow if you need fresh water halfway - to the Coral Coast. Spanning 1,100km, it features world-class heritage sites, carefully preserved marine parks, a kaleidoscope of colour and the possibility of interacting with the best wildlife on the blue planet. Swim with bottlenose dolphins, find Nemo and discover why this partnership between land and sea is so precious to the survival of turtles, dugongs, whale sharks and humpback whales.
Exmouth,
home to Cape Range National Park and the Ningaloo Reef lies on the very northern tip of the Coral Coast. Whatever time of year you travel, you’ll be greeted by something spectacular; from whale sharks feasting on krill between March and July, humpback whales migrating from June to November, and turtles nesting along the beaches November to March. With an abundance of vegetation and a much more comfortable climate than the Outback of Western Australia, wildlife has settled in Cape Range. From an osprey perched on a lagoon within Mangrove Bay, to a red kangaroo scouring the floor for food, you’re sure to witness the life within the park. Yardie Creek, a permanent, multi-coloured gorge, is home to a colony of black-footed rock wallabies. Yardie Creek Gorge tour is the most ideal way to spot such wildlife and get an idea of the geology and formation of the gorge. A one-hour boat ride costs around $35 per person. The park is rife with campsites, 112 in total, but facilities are few – no power, showers or cooking facilities. Being so close to Exmouth town, park your campervan and stay in the luxury of a clean, cosy and bug-less room thanks to Novotel Ningaloo Resort, Exmouth Backpackers or Ningaloo Lodge.
The Ningaloo Reef
that should be on everyone’s bucket list! With a coastline stretching 260km and covering 5,000 square km of the Indian Ocean, it has been protected since 1987 and contains the last significant portion of dugong in the world, at just a mere 2,000. The creation of the reef is so incredible that in some areas you can walk straight into the sea from the beach and within five to ten metres, be swimming over stunning corals and anemone. Alternatively, head off on a

Many of its original buildings have been restored and protected, including the Old Gaol that offers a history lesson in 19th century convict and colonial life, as a converted museum and art gallery. Point Samson, one of the many parts of Australia that jut out to the sea, has drawn visitors due to its tranquil sandy beach Honeymoon Cove, great seafood restaurants and inviting atmosphere. There are chalets and B&Bs ready to accommodate, or The Cove Caravan Park is in a great location for the fishing spots and grassed barbeque areas by the beach.

A Love Letter To Melbourne... For years I was infatuated with Sydney. Bondi Beach, a Harbour, The Rocks, a population as fit as the cast of Home & Away (apparently). But then I grew up. I discovered coffee and a penchant for street art. I craved culture, I met you Melbourne and I developed a bit of a crush. I found myself completely enamoured and a little bit intimidated. I am a Londoner (an East Londoner in fact), I should be used to urban grit and skinny-jean-hip. But you are different. You are cool without even trying. You don’t have to make a song and dance about pop-up bars, dazzling sunshine or even your proximity to world-class beaches, because you are positively overflowing with them. For you, this is normal. You’re cool and you know it. Yet you’re not afraid to sit back and let the rest of the world work it out for themselves, one coffee lover at a time. I think I might be falling in love with you Melbourne and these are some of the reasons why: Beers In a grotty courtyard off a dingy alley in the heart of Chinatown, you construct a bar out of abandoned storage containers and it is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. (Section 8) Jammed onto a pontoon in the middle of the river you house a bar that I am clamouring to get into. (Ponyfish Island.) On the top of a derelict looking building with a scarily old lift, you open a roof garden bar and rooftop cinema. (Roof Garden) And in funky Brunswick, Italian cafes and vintage clothes stores are interspersed with bars decorated with reclaimed furniture (Bimbos) and German-esque beer halls (Little Creatures.) Beans I spent two years in training with a Melburnian so that I was able to drink coffee before visiting your city. As soon as we landed we found our way to St Ali and I was glad to have converted my tea swilling ways. Half warehouse, half science lab, even this novice coffee drinker knew the bean was good. We continued to tour the city, from Manchester Press to Brother Baba Budan, on a never-ending journey of acclaimed coffee houses. Shops Melbourne your shopping is good but it’s the way you present it that really rocks. In underground subways (Campbell Arcade) and down cobblestone laneways (Manchester Lane). In renovated post offices (Melbourne’s GPO) and scarcely restored office buildings (Nicholas Building). In Melbourne the shopping is cool but the surroundings are even better. Street Art Everywhere you look a colourful collage to catch the eye. Hosiers’ and Rankin’s Lanes, a random alleyway; all transformed into a passageway worth passing through. Eats
Hotels For a visitor like myself you offer an impressive spectrum of accommodation- luxury hotels with picture postcard worthy views (Crown Complex) or boutique affairs influenced by local artists (Art Series Hotels). The Olsen Art Series Hotel actively encourage guests to overstay their welcome by offering them a second night free if their room is not already booked. A good excuse as any to never leave the city. Melbourne I think I might be falling in love with you. Could it be you love me too?

Melbourne you seem more multicultural than the rest of your Aussie city siblings. You’ve embraced the Asian culture and that is visible in your cuisine. You offer Asian fusion banquets that enabled me to eat like a Queen (Chin Chin – 7 courses for $70) and have whole areas dedicated to the joy that is Vietnamese cuisine (see Halong Bay in Richmond). At Queen Victoria Market, trading since the 1800’s, the clothes may be unattractive but the variety of fresh food and veg on offer still delights the locals today.
Falling For Perth... Growing up in country towns, city life never appealed to me, though weekend trips to Perth were always such an adventure! I moved “up” here for uni and found it difficult not knowing many people, getting parking tickets almost every day and worst of all... living in Victoria park. (For those unfamiliar with good ol’ Vic park- it is outer suburbia full of car yards, brothels and Italian restaurants.) I’ve been in Perth now for about 4 years and I love it more every day. When I moved back unwillingly after an impromptu 6 month hiatus over-east, I found it far too hot, I was broke and there seemed nowhere cool to go.... These days I revel in finding places to grab a pot of tea or cocktail, the best vegetarian, gluten-free, organic, locally produced snacks (just kidding – not really!) and sussing out where the music is at. I’m passionate about quality food and a well-made stiff drink and to my taste buds’ delight there are more and more places popping up all over the place. My favourite joint to go for a burger is The Moon Cafe; actually, I have never had anything off the menu except the veg burger. It’s dimly lit, laidback, kitsch, never over-crowded and sometimes there’s live music. Yay! La Cholita on William Street is top of the list for delicious tequila cocktails and fish tacos. The staff are always friendly, cruisy and know their tequila. Mechanics Institute Bar across the road makes one of the best drinks I have had the pleasure of tasting. If only I could remember what it was. Located upstairs from the corner of William Street, most of the floor space is on outdoor decking looking out to the city skyline. Made with old ship containers, a bar in the courtyard and indoors, The Bakery in Northbridge is one of the most atmospheric places for live gigs. Humble and a little bit grungy - the way good live music venues should be. The Laneway Lounge has just opened and I think it could be the place to be when feeling fancy. Situated “in a laneway” opposite Shafto’s Lane, this beautiful jazz bar has an eclectic range of cocktails and live performers Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. I’ve begun to make Hare Krishna café, Govindas, a weekly ritual. It serves all you can eat Indian vegetarian food for $10. Despite being on William Street, it’s never super busy. The trio of complexes that make up Planet is a great place to flick through records upstairs, get lost among the diverse range of literary styles in the book shop or hire cult classic films from the video store.
Words & Images by Kyra Shennan
I’m lucky to live right by Hyde Park - the flowers and towering fig trees make it a nice oasis so close to the city and a lovely setting to exercise, play Frisbee, have a wee picnic or chill. On my walks through I sometimes stop in at the theosophical library across the road for a browse.

GLOBAL WATCH
Edinburgh Fringe Festival With August breezing in, it’s that time of year when the UK are comedy obsessed. With dramatic and comedic hopefuls arriving in Edinburgh in their droves, we take a look at the annual Edinburgh Fringe Festival...
New acts fight for recognition, old acts return, and the strangest acts in the world thrive in this eclectic and thoroughly chaotic atmosphere - it must be Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2013. From 31st July to 26th August 2013, over 2,500 shows will take place across 250 venues, making this the largest (and best) open-access festival in the world. Overflowing streets are scattered with clowns on stilts, fire jugglers and tightrope walkers; busking musicians play on every corner and roaring cheers can be heard from dawn until dusk as crowds delight in magic shows on the Royal Mile. Street performers travel from all over the world to create a carnival atmosphere in the heart of the city. Catch a comedian in the afternoon, a cabaret in the evening and party on until 5am in Edinburgh’s huge range of clubs, and then do it all again the next day. Sleep is for the weak. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe started life when eight theatre companies boldly invited themselves to the Edinburgh International Festival in 1947 to take advantage of the crowds, and put on their own alternative performances. In 1951, students of the University of Edinburgh supported the acts by setting up a drop-in centre in the YMCA to provide struggling acts with food and a place to sleep. Since then, the Fringe has become a huge annual sellout event; last year saw 2,695 shows in comedy, theatre, music, cabaret, dance and physical theatre, in addition to a range of acts for children brought to Edinburgh from 47 different countries. The festival unusually remains un-juried - any act with a venue willing to host them is included, meaning that the performances are decidedly more unique, unadulterated and risky than any other festival. However, it also means that whilst standards are
28 www.bbmlive.com
high they can also be incredibly low, so make sure you sample a show in the street before signing up to see the full performance. The absence of a selection committee is a godsend to new performers. The Fringe acts as a platform for comedians, singers, dancers and actors who want the opportunity to be noticed by crowds and reviewed by critics. For instance, in the 1960s, members of the Monty Python team performed in Edinburgh in student productions. Rowan Atkinson, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson also appeared at the Fringe before achieving success. What’s more, the Fringe opens up hundreds of jobs to students home for the summer, or simply looking to live and work in Edinburgh during August. The sheer number of tourists and acts generates full-time bar vacancies, box office positions and paid work handing out flyers to snatch up as many viewers to the shows as possible. Many venues offer free accommodation and entry into shows for their staff; it’s no surprise that students apply for work as early as May to grab the best positions. Most vacancies offer only two full days off during the whole of the festival period, but more hours equals more money for drinks when you clock off. The Fringe also provides the opportunity for budding journalists, presenters and producers to sink their teeth into interviewing and reviewing the hugely diverse range of acts; last year saw the appearance of Waffle TV, a brand new online media production company that revealed exclusive footage of the performances. Venues come in all shapes and sizes, from renowned theatres such as Traverse or Bedlam
to castle grounds and lecture theatres, as well as temporary structures such as the Udderbelly. The Udderbelly is a giant, purple, upside-down, cowshaped tent owned and run by the Underbelly event and management company. This concept of the pop-up venue, along with other Fringe features, has been reproduced all over the world. Adelaide Fringe Festival in Southern Australia runs for 24 days and nights from February to March, with shows presented in parks and warehouses. Originating in 1960, the festival began as a response to the exclusion of many artists from the curated Adelaide Festival of Arts. This year’s Fringe festival promises a range of top comedians including Jimeoin - Ireland’s internationally acclaimed star of Live at the Apollo - and Daniel Sloss, who brings his new stand-up show to Edinburgh after a year of live touring. For up-and-coming comedians, we recommend ‘Jobby Hunter’ in which Cormac Friel - who has recently secured a place in the So You Think You’re Funny semi-final tells of his hilarious attempts to secure a job after university. If you’re into energetic and colourful African dance and song, watch ThaTha at Assembly George Square, or if you really want to get stuck-in, take part in the world’s first interactive drum-theatre experience. Also at Assembly George Square, multi-award winning guitarist Antonio Forcione mixes Latin, authentic African and Jazz vibes in an awe-inspiring and skilful performance. For late night party-goers, head to the number one silent disco in the world at Assembly Checkpoint or step into the sell-out Hot Dub Time Machine and dance to a song from each year, from 1954 to 2013. Lord of the Rings Trilogy Mount Ngauruhoe, New Zealand
Game of Thrones Dubrovnik, Croatia
Game of Thrones hysteria has overwhelmed Dubrovnik, a.k.a “King’s Landing”. The area of Fort Lovrijenac has been used in series’ two and three as “Red Keep”, for the scenes including ‘Slaughter of the Innocent’ and ‘The Battle of Blackwater’. And for all your Game of Thrones geeks, you can even go on informative guided tours to really get your fix!
Mount Ngauruhoe, otherwise known as Mount Doom from the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, lies within North Island’s Tongariro National Park and is New Zealand’s most historically active volcano. Featuring a striking cone that reaches more than 3000ft above its surrounding landscape, a challenging route from Mangatepopo Road End leads you to its summit.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Hampton Court, London, England
While there’s an abundance of history in London, for film buffs and Johnny Depp fanatics, Hampton Court Palace is the place to head to. Once home to King Henry VIII, book a guided tour with a costumed character or a member of palace staff, or you can just stroll around the grounds and get lost in the maze. The Palace is located next to the River Thames and Home Park and will really transport you into period drama heaven!

The Dark Knight Rises Mehrangarh Fort, Rajasthan, India
Jodhpur, Rajasthan is home to the Mehrangarh Fort, which gave Christopher Nolan his prison in the final installment of his Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. Actors Christian Bale and Josh Pence joined him for the scene in the fort, 400 feet above the city. Recognised as one of the most impressive forts in Rajasthan, if not the whole of India, its red sandstone walls are haunting, yet beckon you to explore. The museum’s visiting hours are from 9am – 5pm or take a twilight walk with the museum curator from 6pm or 7pm for one hour.
The Great Gatsby (2013)
St. Patrick’s Seminary, Sydney, Australia What better building to use for Gatsby’s lavish estate than our very own St. Patrick’s Seminary in Sydney? For exterior shots, faux ivy was applied to the first two floors, a temporary fountain was set up in the courtyard and, in post-production, rising turrets were added for dramatic effect. The building, now the International College of Management in Manly, became the perfect venue for Gatsby’s magnificent Jazz Age parties. Despite being set in the US, director Baz Luhrmann filmed the entire movie in Australia, taking inspiration from the 20th Century houses along Long Island’s North Shore.
Jurassic Park
Manawaiopuna Falls, Hawaii
Apocalypse Now Baler Bay, Philippines
If it weren’t for Apocalypse Now, Baler Bay, Aurora wouldn’t be the surfing paradise that it is. The production crew left behind the surf boards so locals could experience the 3 metre-high waves for themselves, and now thousands of surfer dudes flock to the annual Aurora Surfing Cup to show off their skills.
Otherwise known as Jurassic Falls due to the 1993 epic, this is an idyllic spot in Kauai, Hawaii that appears on many bucket lists. Falling from a height of 360 feet, this waterfall is a highlight of all helicopter tours in the region, including Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, departing from Hanapepe, and Inter-island Helicopters and Mauna Loa Helicopters, departing from Lihue. During your stay, explore everything this charming island has to offer, including beaches, cliff-tops and rainforests.

INTERVIEWS
Jason Byrne It’s been near impossible to get hold of the Irish comedian, but we finally managed to pin down the funny man for a quick chat, in between filming his brand new sitcom ‘Father Figure’ for BBC1. Completely off the wall, the family man has based the sitcom on family life with his two cheeky sons and wife. Jason will be heading out to Australia in September and October to do a massive national tour entitled the ‘Special Eye’ tour. Having been a sell out at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Jason’s radio credits also include BBC Radio 2 and 4, including hosting three series of ‘The Jason Byrne Show’ on Radio 2. Here, we find out a little more about who Jason Byrne is, and what we can expect from the upcoming tour!
Hi Jason, how are you? How would you be if you just stood on a starfish, and it wasn’t even at the beach, but in my grandmother’s house. It fell off the fireplace and I was bare foot, and that’s why I do stand-up... what was the question? Nevermind… where are you at the moment? Sitting in the corner of my living room, having lego men heads flicked at me by my sons. Haha! You’re about to start filming your new BBC1 sitcom Father Figure, how is it shaping up? Are you excited? It’s shaping up well, all eps are ready, it’s like living inside a womb, and the baby is the sitcom and I’m the placenta, and the excitement is I can’t wait till it’s born. From what we know, you play a father who tries his best for his two sons, but things don’t always work out how he intends; does this reflect your real role as a father at all? I’m a great dad, but I would say that, wouldn’t I? My children always do what I tell them, until their mother walks out the door, I then go from being their dad to being their brother, and that is how the sitcom runs. Will the wife and kids be watching? Oh defo, the sitcom characters are cartoon versions of my real family; the two kids in the sitcom are called Tom and Jerry and the wife’s name is Betty Boo. You’ll have a live audience watching you filming, are you hoping that will make it feel more like a stand-up gig, what you’re used to? I will defo feel better with a live audience there. It will lift the performances of all the actors and, most importantly, tell me if the gags are working straight away.

You have to miss this year’s Comedy Festival season in Australia as a result, are you a little disappointed? I was so disappointed; to miss the trip of a lifetime to such an amazing country would have been awful, but I have been recording a BBC1 sitcom and that’s a chance of a lifetime, and now I get to go back already. Will your Special Eye tour in September and October make up for your absence? In the best way I can, and that’s normally the best way ever. Last time we spoke to you, you were desperate to get some sun in Australia; is that the same this year? What will you be doing in your spare time? Can’t wait to smell the heat, feel the heat, and I have been really fit since the sitcom, as I had to do a few stunts, so I’ll be running along those beautiful coastlines, and I may even go diving as I’m an amazing swimmer. I can do deep sea diving with no air tanks. Show off! What can we expect during this tour? Any surprises? I’ve always wanted to not turn up. That would be the best surprise of all. But to give away surprises now would be crazy. This whole show will run in the Edinburgh Comedy Festival and, as it runs, more and more surprises happen, so I’ll bring them to Oz. There’s a huge Irish population in Australia, is that comforting when you’re away from home? Will you be paying a visit to any of the Irish pubs? When I’m away from my country I love to meet my fellow countrymen, but I normally don’t have to go into an Irish bar, as I like to go to the Oz bars. I’ve a fairly good idea what an Irish bar looks like, and I’m normally heading back home to that anyway.
You’ve done a number of incredible gigs and radio and TV shows, do you have a memory that stands out from the rest? When I recorded my live radio show at the BBC in London Radio 2, I had an audience full of nurses. I spoke to an Irish nurse, I said it must have been great to be a nurse, but she answered and said “I’m not a nurse anymore, I’m a roofer.” Only an Irish woman would leave nursing to work on a roof. What’s in the pipeline for 2014? Please God, more sitcom, more sitcom; more Oz, more Oz. Thanks Jason, and we look forward to catching you on tour in Australia!

PEACE
Peace are fast becoming the hottest band on everyone’s lips. After the success of their album ‘In Love’, the youthful Birmingham boys have announced their debut Australian tour, which is set to take place in September 2013. We took the opportunity to catch up with drummer Dominic Boyce at this pivotal point in Peace’s musical career to find out what drives them and why “they’re never content with anything”... Hi Dom, how are you? I’m good thanks, yourself?
We’re very excited! Apparently, there’s koala bears you can hang out with which sounds pretty good!
Not bad, thank you! So you guys are pretty much everywhere at the moment! Is that something that you ever expected to happen when you first started out? No, no! Not at all. You think about things like this when you’re a kid and, y’know, you’re dreaming about being in a band or whatever but it’s really weird. Well, it’s not weird, it’s great, I love it but we do get around! It’s a lot more travelling than you think.
Is there anything in particular that you actually want to do when you’re out there, besides play music? Well, we’ll be there in spring, so it’s going to be good-ish weather I think. I just want to hang out on beaches. Because I don’t know how cliché it is, but it does seem to be a thing that Australians just love to do.
When you were dreaming of being in a band, did you ever imagine it would be as much hard work? Yeah, that’s it, isn’t it? You don’t really dream of the idea of being worked hard. Like, “oh yeah, I hope one day I’ll get to sit in the back of a van for 12 hours!” Slogging through these pesky interviews... Yeah, exactly, but it’s cool. I’m not complaining about anything. Do you think that the Birmingham music scene you grew up in has influenced your sound at all? I don’t think it’s influenced our sound but I would say it influenced our attitude as musicians. Because when we first started going, we were playing in Birmingham loads and there really wasn’t much of a scene. However, in the House and Techno scene, the attitudes of the DJs from Birmingham and around the world, and the way that they treated each other, was something that we wanted to have in the way we played. So having a certain closeness is important? Yeah, exactly and like the mutual respect for people. There were no egos, people weren’t afraid to be like “man I love your stuff”. Whereas I think in the band world, there’s quite a lot of people who feel like they have to pretend that they’re too cool all the time. And I’ve never been cool! You’ve just announced your debut Australian tour. Are you excited?
On top of the Aussie tour, you’ve also just announced your biggest UK headline dates as of yet. How are you planning on developing your live shows to fit these venues? When we come to do these shows, it’s going to be the first time we’ve had a production crew. We’ve always just turned up, played our gigs and then thrown it all in the back of a van or whatever. So this time, there’s going to be a production team which means visually it might be more exciting. Maybe there’ll be a cheeky bit of fireworks if we can clear that one! Maybe... You’ve had loads of support from the likes of NME and you’re also doing loads of the main UK festivals this year. Do you feel as though you’re where you want to be in your musical career right now? Yeah, we’re definitely happy to be a part of what we’re doing. I definitely think it’s an exciting time for bands like us and bands who are just starting up. But without meaning to sound greedy, it’s just that so far we’ve never been content with anything. It’s not like we’ve ever said “It’s not good enough, we need more!” or anything. We’re just not really in a position to sit back and be like “right, we’ve done it boys, let’s go on holiday for a month”. We just want to keep going, really. What’s been the biggest highlight so far, then? So far this year, I reckon Glastonbury has to be up there! And how was it playing Glastonbury? It was cool! No matter how many shows we do, even if it’s sold out, all of us are still like “shit, what if no one turns up?” and Glastonbury was very much
like that because it’s a BIG stage so we were a bit worried about that, but we walked out and the place was packed. Are you an experienced festival-goer yourself? Yeah! I’d never been to Glastonbury before, though. I’ve been to Reading a few times and some smaller ones locally to where we’re from. But it’s nice to go from the other side. Not to sound too boring but you do appreciate the nice toilets, showers and food and all that stuff. It is nice. New bands are cropping up everywhere but do you have anyone in particular that you’re listening to at the moment? Splash are great, I love them and I’ve managed to get hold of their record and it’s really, really good. Apart from them, we’re touring with a band called Super Foods who are worryingly good. Every time they play before us, it’s like “how can we top that?!” But those two are the ones I’m like really stoked about at the moment. And that’s all. Thanks so much for your time Dom!

Big Chocolate I knew making electronic music was something I really wanted to do over other musical styles in high school, although I wasn’t really making any strides until about 2010. The first step forward to what I’m doing now was a side project called Commissioner, which was like glitchy Drum and Bass/Dubstep/Breakcore mixed with Metal. Since then I’ve gradually moved further and further away from heavier sounds. But I would say it’s a good time for people to be using the electronic platform. Not necessarily a good time to hop on the bandwagon but more so for exploring electronic avenues. Big Chocolate was joke name I used in 2006. It was funny to me then but now i’m always sad about it. Although I love chocolate. I’m inspired by time of year, location, tools available, current friends and what not. Sometimes other music will inspire me but doesn’t really get my creative drive going. I’m really excited to be playing in Australia again and to see the country and reunite with the friends I made over there from my first visit. I can’t wait to play Chinese Laundry again either! It’s sick, I remember it being really, really loud! My live show has changed very drastically along with the music I’ve been making since the last time I was in Oz. Last time I was there, it was before any of my recent music was released and/or created. I feel like I’m playing more mature sets now than the first time I was there. Fans can expect the jams from my recent releases along with my head space for the future. Later on in the year, I’m going to block out the rest of fall and winter so I can concentrate on writing music and hopefully do a bit of reinventing myself.

Hybrid
Really Good clubs have to have the following ingredients: good forward thinking management, great choice of talent coming in, great sound system and most importantly the people who make the club night. Chinese Laundry has been blessed with these since it started. Let’s hope that things never change as it would be a tragedy. Artists like Rolling Stones, The Clash, Stevie Wonder and Joy Division are a few of the artists we will be remixing and playing out for the first time on these Australian dates. It seems to get harder and harder finding music I like to play, that’s why I’ll still play something that’s six months old. If it’s a killer tune and nothing else has come out to take it’s place, well I’ll keep playing that killer tune, thanks. I also like to play the Hybrid classics but will always have something unheard from us to play. Our mini album is still on the go and taking some time as we keep getting offered really good film/video game projects. In the last 12 months we have worked on Total Recall/ Fast and Furious 6/ Dead in Tombstone and are just finishing a driving game called #Driveclub, which gets released for Playstation 4. We do have some singles almost ready to come out so they are next. They are linked to the #Driveclub project so expect to see them same time as the game release. I just did a new mix called ‘Hybrid Black Treacle Summer Mix Tape’. It’s a bass heavy mix and a bit different for us but has some killer tracks on from people like Organikismness/ Emperor and Koven. On a more Hybrid Sound System dirty Techno tip people like Smak/ Simon Shackelton and Borderline are floating my boat. And I have a big boat!

Against Me! – True Trans Two years ago, Tom Gabel (then frontman) made the biggest decision of his life. The angst-sounding Punk legend from Florida announced that he would be changing his gender, thus suddenly and bravely fronting Against Me! as Laura Jane Grace. The Punk scene, his wife, music friends and fans from across the globe embraced Grace’s new identity, and after years of battling with her then secret lifestyle, the band is back to doing what they do best, writing and recording. ‘True Trans’ is the first glimpse of what we can expect. Despite being only two acoustic tracks - ‘FuckMyLife666’ and ‘True Trans Soul Rebel’ - they are proof that Against Me! are still on top form and shows us that they have gained an abundance of confidence, indicating that the band have no plans of slowing down. They may have been making music for some 16 years, but it’s only now that we are hearing, and seeing the real Against Me! Exciting times lay ahead, watch this space.

Album Reviews Dead Letter Circus – The Catalyst Fire
With a debut that peaked at number two in the AIRA charts back in 2010 - plus said record turning gold earlier this year (500,000 sold), Dead Letter Circus couldn’t be in a better position to release their eagerly awaited follow-up album, ‘The Catalyst Fire’, expected in early August. The Brisbane-based four-piece have spent the last nine months locked away in the studio with their longtime producer and collaborator Forrester Savell to conjure up this 11 track mammoth, and from the off, it’s clear that progression has been a keyword in its conception. DLC’s sound is epic, with a blistering wall of noise coming in at you from all angles. It’s the strenuous vocals of Kim Benzie that are perhaps the only real cause for concern at present. You’ll either love his slightly falsetto approach that wavers around each track, or you’ll just find them a little irritating. At times, the whole piece comes together brilliantly, both vocals and instruments reaching a climax of sound (see ‘Lodestar’), whereas, on the other hand, the need for progression gives you a sense that there’s sometimes a little too much happening in such a short space of time (see ‘Say Your Prayers’). With a focussed, driving rhythm pushing the album towards its final stages you’ll find that you’ve been engrossed within the multiple, broad-minded layers that construct ‘The Catalyst Fire’. The band have clearly found their feet. This album proves that they are/were not a flash in the pan. However, whether this record has the power to sustain such a prolific status as their previous venture is unclear; their live performance will probably give more of an indication, but what is clear is that ‘The Catalyst Fire’ is well worth a listen if you fancy something a little different.
Goldfrapp – Tales Of Us
Goldfrapp have returned, armed with their sixth studio album ‘Tales Of Us’: a haunting, musical affair that is quite frankly unlike anything they’ve ever released before. And whether that’s a good thing or not is still undecided. The album opens with ‘Jo’, which, in truth, is quite stale. Although intriguing and ethereal, it’s too dreary for an opening track. Alison Goldfrapp’s vocals, however, are completely transfixing; her breathy range fits the song’s tone flawlessly. Single ‘Drew’ is definitely one of the most glorious songs on the album, complete with bold instrumentation and build-ups. The added string solo is reminiscent of a James Bond movie, but it simply adds to the cinematic style of the album. With a strong narrative that guides each track, the album is full of intricate complexities that are mesmerising and critical to the album’s overall themes. With each track, bar one, named in the first person, it puts an added emotional and relatable stamp on the tracks. It’s clear that Goldfrapp’s new sound is a reflection of their maturity within the music industry and even though ‘Tales Of Us’ is so bare and stripped back, there are undertones of their Electro-Pop musical past nestled within the tracks. Texturised, pulsating Electro-Pop beats subtly hint at their past sound and reassure that it’s definitely Goldfrapp you’re listening too.
El-P & Killer Mike – Run The Jewels
The opening self-titled track is a filthy introduction. It’s a full-frontal assault on the ears that features some impressive lyrics, big beats and dirty basslines. El-P’s rants and disses are wellversed and the rhythm is crisp. The production is spot-on as well. It’s unpolished and free from manipulation. A less-is-more approach that works very well throughout each track. It quickly becomes apparent that El-P is feeling comfortable with this new impulsive style, and with some exceptional additions from Killer Mike and Big Boi, the record transforms into a glimpse of the potential future for Brooklyn’s Hip-Hop scene. At a point in time when rappers have received a lot of stick, it’s great to see that some artists are still happy to push their creative boundaries and throw caution to the wind. The rise of ‘real’ Hip-Hop could well be back in full swing with an apparent mutiny against label interference and a wealth of free mixtapes being thrown around the internet, and ‘Run The Jewels’ is a promising addition to the genre.
38 www.bbmlive.com
By Robert Bramhill & Bryony Curtis
New York-based rapper/producer El-P is a bit of a perfectionist. His previous overly-thought out albums have dealt with topics ranging from US drones to abusive relationships, but Run The Jewels is a much more spontaneous project. Instead, it’s a rough around the edges, quick-lipped Hip-Hop record that has been released for free. But does this new, relaxed approach work in his favor?
Underground Electonica... Robert Babicz The Butterfly
BBM’s Top Ten Tracks To Download
- The Owl and
Twenty track epic ‘The Owl and The Butterfly’, Robert Babicz’s third album, is packed with ups and downs and enough builds and drops to keep any House head happy. With short, beatless interludes, named ‘Dream Sequences’ added inbetween each full-length track. In doing so, Babicz successfully creates a tranquil, calm before the storm quality nestled amongst the balance and contrast created by his favoured musical style.
Atoms For Peace - Amok
Electro Soundscapes introduce ‘Amok’, the debut album from Thom Yorke’s supergroup, Atoms For Peace. Although unusual, it’s hard to ignore the Radiohead resemblance buried in each track; the high pitched, prolonged wails alongside experimental stomps are all in there. Yorke’s moody vocal style seems effortless alongside the anaesthetised beats, but do hinder songs from reaching their full potential as they often outshine the explorative nature of the much more exciting accompanying music.
Clean Bandit – Dust Clears Fractures – Twisted Hurts – Somebody To Die For Polarsets – Just Don’t Open Your Eyes Yet Moby – A Case For Shame Sam Smith – Safe With Me Swim Deep – Crush Battleships – As You’d Begun Wankelmut and Emma Louise – My Head is a Jungle Meg Mac – Known Better
Carl Craig - Masterpiece
‘Masterpiece’ is the ambitious release from Tech House visionary Carl Craig. The three-disc compilation features only one conventional DJ set that includes smooth mixes and transitions, but turns stale from about the midway point. From here, however, ‘Masterpiece’ takes a turn for the better. The various classic tracks, or Craig’s ‘influences’, on disc two break up the foreseen Dance beats repeated monotonously on disc one, while disc three showcases Craig’s most recent original work, his first in some time, and a rare treat.
London Grammar Announce Debut Album Release After the fairly anonymous nature of their previous single releases, London Grammar managed to remain moderately unknown for some time. But after the release of their transfixing single ‘Wasting My Young Years’, the band were suddenly exposed and celebrated for their chillingly beautiful songs led by Hanna Reid.
The 11-track album is the product of a gruelling, 18-month process, which has seen the band involved with all the decision-making, including the handpicking of their recording team. London Grammar released their EP ‘Metal and Dust’ earlier this year, which thrust the band into new and exciting opportunities including support slots for The xx, numerous festival appearances and the announcement of their own headline tour in October 2013.

After the mass of attention they’ve received since the release of their huge singles, London Grammar have announced the release of their debut album ‘If You Wait’, which is due out September 6th 2013.

FUNNY NEWS What’s Good For The Goose, Is Bad For The Gangster
Chinese police have taken a birds-eye view of crime-fighting after hiring flocks of geese to help catch criminals and clean up the streets. We don’t want to sound negative, but from what little BBM knows about geese, they’re more likely to shit all over the streets than clean them up. “Among all poultry, geese [are known] for being extremely vigilant and having excellent hearing,” said police chief Zhang Quansheng. “Geese are very brave. They spread their wings and will attack any strangers entering [someone’s] home. “In some ways, they are more useful than dogs; a household normally keeps one dog [but] an intruder can throw a drugged bun to kill the dog.” We get the impression that chief officer Quansheng might not really have thought this one through – so dogs can be drugged but geese can’t, right? And we’re not entirely sure how much of a deterrent a sign saying “Warning: I live here” accompanied by a picture of a goose would be to a potential intruder. In fact, officer Quansheng’s logic is so flawed we suspect someone may have given him a drugged bun before the press conference. The use of geese is now being ‘actively promoted’ across the region following the success of the trial, but we’re still not convinced at BBM Towers. On the downside, how long will it take criminals to work out they just have to wait til winter for the feathery boys in blue to fly south? On the plus side, if a goose is killed on duty, at least police will have something to fill their sandwiches for the next couple of days. We can see it now, a goose-based reboot of Turner and Hooch. Starring Ryan Gosling.
A Diet That’s Worth The Weight
Calling all fatties, get your giant ass on the first flight to Dubai (you’ll need to book two seats, chubby) because the Gulf Emirate is paying its residents gold to lose weight. That’s right, there’s gold in them tha’ massive flaps of skin – and it’s not just a wrapper from a Galaxy bar that got lodged in your man boobs. For every kilogram dropped by 16th August, contestants who registered can waddle away with a gram of gold, currently worth about $42, Dubai’s civic authority announced as part of its ‘Your Weight in Gold’ initiative. We can almost hear hordes of Americans rubbing their sausagefingered hands together in greasy glee. “Break out the sausages baby, we’re fry-panning for gold! Those clogged arteries are rivers of cash!” The top three fatties can win gold coins worth up to 20,000 dirhams ($5400). “Participants must have excess weight to reduce and stay away from unhealthy methods to lose weight and should be present on the final day

to measure weight,” Dubai Municipality said in a press release. Health officials in Dubai, the commercial hub of the United Arab Emirates, and in neighbouring Gulf nations, are spending millions to control obesity among their citizens.Five of the 10 countries where diabetes is most prevalent are in the sixnation Gulf Cooperation Council, according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), an umbrella organisation of more than 200 national associations. The US tried something similar a few years ago, but the winners were all paid in McDonald’s vouchers and died of heart problems a few weeks later.
Stuck In A Tight Situation January’s the usual month of choice for people looking to get stuck into things, but last month seemed to buck the trend with umpteen idiots getting various body parts stuck, entwined or locked up. Our favourite incident involved a pair of kinky lesbians (is there any other kind? Woof woof!), who had to call for police assistance in Halifax when they lost the key to a pair of handcuffs during a bout of bondage fun.“We found it amusing, but the girls looked embarrassed,” Commander Paul Gyde said. “They (handcuffs) looked real and probably served the purpose for what they wanted them for (toot! toot!).” Less sexy but more comical, was the story of a woman in Cornwall who spent “most of Monday” wedged in a faulty deckchair before being freed by firefighters. More sexy shenanigans landed a woman in Russia in trouble after she got her head stuck between some banister railings while having sex on a flight of stairs. (Ding dong!) A neighbour called police after finding the woman naked and on her knees in a stairwell, unable to free herself. She told police she had consensual sex with her partner, who had left the scene – and they say chivalry is dead. Emergency worker Alexei Dotsenko said: “In all my time working as a rescuer, I don’t recall any incident like this one.” And last, but not least stupid was a five-year-old boy in China who, bafflingly, somehow managed to get his head stuck in the railings of his family’s fourth floor apartment – with his body dangling from the outside above the street below. The boy could be seen kicking his legs in a panic after reportedly climbing over the metal cage to look for his mother who had locked him in the house alone. So there you have it readers, if there’s a lesson to be taken from all of this, it’s that lesbians are hot. We stopped paying attention after that one. Woof woof! the same job as lollipop men in Staffordshire.

Imagine, after all those years finding out that being a sad loser with a shit job is in your genes. Mind-boggling stuff. “When we met, it was an emotional thing, but I was just so surprised when he told me he was applying to be a lollipop man at the same council as me,” explained Darren Wardle, whose dad Paul Ferris gave him up for adoption when he was a few days old. “Due to the fact I am a mobile lollipop man, I don’t have a fixed station so it would be very rare for our paths to ever cross.” The long-lost father and son both work for Staffordshire council and between them have been verbally abused and spat at by thousands of children in the area. “It makes you wonder whether being a lollipop man might be in the blood,” said road safety councillor Simon Tagg, presumably while looking down his nose at them.

Sadly, although its unique selling point proved popular initially, Mulyana’s “Nazi-themed” café – complete with swastikas, large pictures of Adolf Hitler and staff wearing Nazi uniforms – was soon hit by scandal thanks to outraged locals and foreigners.

Up The Creek With A Makeshift Paddle
A man from the US has been rescued after attempting to sail 300 miles from the south of England to Ireland in a child’s inflatable dinghy with a sail made out of tarpaulin. Worst. MacGyver. Ever. The 40-year-old was found drifting a few miles from the Dorset coast in a vessel with a makeshift mast and sail. Discovered by a passing dive boat, his rescuers said he had no water and had given up on reaching Ireland - but that he did not seem worried. “My first thoughts were: very bizarre,” said Nigel Holder, skipper of the boat X-Dream. “If you can imagine a small child’s dinghy ... and a grown man sitting in it with oars - and he had a mast made up of paddles and a triangular sail made from a tarpaulin.” The freak initially insisted he did not need help but later agreed to get on board and was taken ashore, where he received treatment for severe sunburn. It’s unknown if he had a huge bushy beard and was yelling “Wilson” at the time.

The Pints Of Brian
Anyone remember classic 80s comedy Brewster’s Millions starring Richard Pryor, where he has to spend millions in a short space of time in order to inherit billions? Leeds United did something similar a few years ago, only it was called Ridsdale’s Millions and the only thing they inherited was a mountain of debt. If anything, it was funnier than the film. Well it seems new Leeds boss Brian McDermott is bringing back those halcyon days after dishing out his own money to fans who came to see the club take on a local Slovenian team as part of a pre-season tour. After the 3-1 victory, the small band of loyal Leeds fans chanted “Oh Brian, it’s your round”, and the bespectacled Uncle Fester-alike duly obliged by handing over 50 Euros as he passed by the stands. Seeing as the average price of a pint in Slovenia is $2, that should leave them tanked up for the best part of the weekend – although seeing as they’re Yorkshiremen there’s an equally good chance they went straight to the bank with it. “Fifty Euros was all I came out with,” McDermott said. “I’d have given them more if I’d had it. I feel a bit bad actually.” The Leeds fans didn’t seem to mind though, with some of them going on Twitter later that evening to post pictures of the empty beer bottles McDermott had paid for. And with a potential free hand-out at every game, expect attendances at Elland Road to go through the roof this year. Smart move, Brian.
Ashes Two Ashes For England We’re not ones to brag here at BBM. For example, despite the fact we have an enormous penis, we almost never mention it. But we’d like to take a moment to puff out our chests and waggle our enormous cocks in the general direction of Australians everywhere, after becoming the first magazine to congratulate England on their Ashes success. The fact we did it a month ago before a ball had been bowled probably helped us get there first. And fresh from watching the shambolic batting display Australia served up in the second Test at Lord’s at the end of July, we’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate England again – this time for winning the next Ashes series, which kicks off in Australia in November. Well done, boys! You’ve done all us ex-pats proud. By which we actually mean, Australia are so shit there’s no way you can lose because even England at their worst are still better than Australia at their best. Of course, it’s possible that Australia could turn on the style in August and not only win the series in England 3-2, but also whitewash their home series 5-0 on the return leg. Then again, it’s also “possible” that Cheryl Cole may one day remove the restraining order she put on BBM and invite us up to her bedroom for a night of noholds barred passion involving all the other members of Girls Aloud. Including anal. Unfortunately for Australians, and for BBM, both of those scenarios are equally unlikely to happen – no matter how hard you close your eyes, pull down your jeans and “think” about it. (And if by any chance you’re reading this Cheryl, it really is enormous).

Blatter Still Playing Qatar Hero
Some breaking news from the boffins at FIFA HQ’s research and development department. After a year of analysis and scientific probing, they’ve made the groundbreaking discovery that it’s very hot in Qatar. So hot, in fact, that it would be silly to hold a major football tournament there in the summer. Just imagine how useful this information would have been a year earlier, just before FIFA decided to stage the 2022 World Cup in the Middle East. Talk about bad timing. The news that it’s hot near the equator took unlucky FIFA chief Sepp Blatter completely by surprise and he’s suggesting a shift in dates. “In this heat, you cannot play in the summer. And we have to consider the players,” he said. “I was just in the Middle East, in Jordan, Palestine and Israel. I have felt the heat in these countries and it’s not as hot there as it is in Qatar. It’s possible to air-condition a stadium, but not an entire country.” Good save, Sepp. Imagine if he’d not visited those countries, no one would have known it was hot in Qatar until it was too late. Even Sepp himself was adamant the tournament would take place during the summer just six months ago. Luckily for us, FIFA’s big cheese has come up with a flawless plan to solve the problem. “The World Cup in Qatar can only take place in the winter,” he said. “And the executive committee is sure to follow me.” Brilliant plan, Sepp, now all you have to do is overhaul every major domestic league in Europe to fit in a two-month break all because FIFA’s wellpaid, jet-setting bigwigs failed to spot that giving a World Cup to Qatar was a fucking ridiculous idea in the first place.
Tanks For The Memories It was Jose Mourinho who first coined the phrase “parking the bus” to describe a team that defends with more depth than a Terrence Malick film. Such ugly tactics offended the footballing sensibilities of Mourinho, who is of course famous for creating flairbased teams of risk-taking, ball-juggling ‘football carousel’ pass masters.
But as Australia are sure to find out at next year’s World Cup, even parking the bus isn’t guaranteed to get you a result when you’re up against truly great teams, which is presumably why Italian midfielder Giulio Migliaccio has come up with a controversial new tactic: parking the tank (stick with us, we’re getting to the point in a minute). Atalanta star Migliaccio, henceforth known as The Desert Prat, is in trouble with the Italian FA after riding in a tank as it rode over and crushed two cars decorated in the colours of rival clubs Brescia and Roma during the club’s pre-season festival. Migliaccio’s excuse? He couldn’t see where he was going. Well that’s all right then. “I was inadvertently the protagonist. In a party atmosphere, in among a huge crowd of fans, including lots of women and children, I was invited on board a tank,” said the 32-year-old. “I certainly could not have imagined that, at a certain stage, we would have crushed two cars taken from the scrap yard. I only realised when we were already going over them and, since I could not see since I was high up and at the back, I did not know that they had the symbols of two football clubs on them.” That excuse didn’t work for BBM when we pissed off a balcony onto Craig Foster’s car, and we’re sure it won’t work for Migliaccio either.
Tis The Season
The cash-harvesting pre-season tours of Asia are over; all the Welsh, Irish and Northern Irish clubs are out of Europe and The Sun’s back page has stopped covering minor sporting events like the Ashes and Tour de France. Yes, the new football season is upon us, but it’s not quite business as usual for everyone. For Manchester United fans, going into a new Premier League season without Alex Ferguson is like waking up as an old man and calling out your wife’s name only to remember she died a few weeks ago, possibly from being too Scottish. Unlike most widowers though, instead of replacing Ferguson with a sexy young foreign hottie - who dumps you a couple of years later after blowing all your money on expensive crap and leaving you in debt - United have gone like-for-like – hitching up with another dowdy Scotch battleaxe who’s in it for the long haul. One man who’s happy with his new bride is Robin van Persie. Asked if rival clubs would sense weakness in the wake of Ferguson’s retirement, Van Persie said: “He (Moyes) works very well. It’s only based on a few sessions but I loved them. Last year, we won the league and that was great but this time we want to win the league and more.” Still, watching United this year is going to be like watching one of those later Taggart episodes after
the Sir Alex-faced lead actor topped himself. And while United have taken the eHarmony route to finding love again (typing in their preferred matches to come up with a clone of their last great love), Chelsea have gone back to the ex they loved all along, with Jose Mourinho breezing back into Stamford Bridge as though he never swaggered away. “‘I am where I want to be so now, it’s up to me to work hard to show my club that I deserve to be here for a long time,” he said. “We have a contract of four years; in the first stage, I hope we can look to the last day of his contract and if in the end the club is happy and wants me to stay, I will be more than happy to do that.” We give it two years tops.
Nothing Fine About Relegation
What’s the real cost of relegation? Well, if you’re Thurrock FC it’s £16. No, really. Part-timers Thurrock were deducted points and relegated from the Isthmian Premier Division because one of their players failed to pay a £16 fine. To make matters worse, neither the player nor the club knew about the fine because he was playing for a different team when he got it – and has been in prison for hooliganism for the last few months. We’re not sure, but we suspect he may be related to Joey Barton. Joel Barnett (see, even the name sounds like Joey Barton), played just four times for Thurrock last season. But he should never have been able to play after failing to pay a fine issued while he was on the books of Yorkshire Sunday league team Wilton. Wilton went under owing the West Riding FA money in unpaid fines, some of which were for a ban Barnett had been served for a dismissal. “Joel should have told us but he never knew because he was in prison,” Thurrock owner Tommy South told BBC Essex. “It’s a disgrace. It all happened 11 months ago and what the FA and Ryman League have told us is that we should have checked this website and that, but we followed procedure by checking with our own county FA.” After leaving prison Barnett had a trial at Bishop’s Stortford – who escaped punishment as he only featured in friendlies – and signed for Tilbury, who were docked 18 points but avoided relegation from Isthmian Division One North. We doubt any other clubs will be signing him soon.

CRYSTAL BALLS
Horoscopes
LEO
You take your new girlfriend to Luna Park for a romantic ride on the big wheel. It’s only when you get to the top that you remember you have a deep fear of heights and promptly soil your underwear. You try to blame the smell on a nearby fish market, but the game is up when poo starts trickling out the bottom of your jeans.
Capricorn
It’s been so long since you last washed your clothes, that when you finally go to the laundry room you find Julian Assange hiding in there. The albino web warrior moved in last August and hasn’t been out since – not even to go to the toilet. Apparently he’s been “wiki-leaking” into your washing machine for the last 12 months.
Pisces
You buy a birthday gift for your partner at Manly markets and are on the ferry back to Circular Quay when, of all the bad luck, the Opera House is attacked by Godzilla. The great beast lets out a metallic roar and stamps on the ferry with one of his mighty feet, smashing it to kindling. Luckily, you manage to jump into the harbour before the boat is destroyed, but your present gets lost in the watery depths. To make matters worse, your partner doesn’t believe you when you get back home and you’re in the doghouse all week.
Aquarius
You’re at the top of centre-point tower in the CBD booking a romantic meal for your partner’s birthday when, of all the bad luck, Sydney is attacked by King Kong. The great beast climbs to the top of the tower and roars in defiance as several fighter jets try to take him down. In the confusion, your booking gets lost in the system and when you arrive for your meal later in the week, they turn you away. When you explain what must have happened, your partner doesn’t believe you and you’re in the doghouse all week.
Sagittarius
Your decision to go vegetarian this month may be good for your conscious, but it’s not so good for your bowels. Man was built to eat only so many brussel sprouts in a day – that’s why God made sprout-based farts so disgusting. Sadly, it was a heavenly warning you never heeded and after a particularly heavy night “on the sprout”, you go to turn on the oven the next morning and the ignition flame, combined with a room-full of night-time methane emissions from your rear end, creates a fart-splosion that kills 15. Yet more blood on Linda McCartney’s hands.
Scorpio
How can we be lovers if we can’t be friends? Find out the answer in next month’s Crystal Balls!

Cancer
You’re jewellery shopping in Pitt Street mall for your partner’s birthday when, of all the bad luck, Sydney is attacked by a 50-foot Tony Abbott. The giant Opposition leader roars something about “stop the boats” and “climate change is a lie”, stomps on several buildings then dons a pair of budgie smugglers and disappears back into the sea whence he came. In the confusion, you forget to get your partner’s present – but in a rare twist of good fortune, she was killed during the rampage so you’re off the hook.
Gemini
I can’t be bothered doing your horoscope anymore Gemini, so here’s my generic horoscope generator. Just cross out the words you don’t want to apply to you: “You will meet/find/see/ your soulmate/true calling/old flame this month, but your jealousy/pride/lack of confidence may not allow the situation/moment/ relationship to bloom/grow/materialise.”
Aries
Oi! Stop looking at bestiality porn you dirty git. Every time I tune in to see what you get up to next month, it’s a bloody filth fest. And if dogs really are man’s best friend, how come that Alsatian is shagging his owner’s wife?
Libra
You speak at the funeral of an old relative this month and come up with the brilliant plan of telling everyone what a complete knob-sack the deceased was so that fellow mourners don’t feel so bad that he’s gone.
Virgo
After watching Spider-Man and The Hulk, you decide the best way to become a superhero is to expose yourself to high levels of radiation. You consequently ingest the radioactive isotope polonium-210 but instead of gaining super strength or the ability to climb vertical surfaces, all your hair falls out and you die a slow and painful death. Honestly, it’s as if Hollywood is making all this stuff up.
Taurus
Eight months after it stopped being a novelty hit and started becoming annoying, you finally master the Gangnam Style dance. You sad, sad git.
ASK CRYSTAL & JOKES
Ask Crystal Dear Crystal, I love my girlfriend very much. She’s smart, funny and attractive – but her fanny looks and smells like a hairy bucket of fish guts. What can I do? Thanks, James Dear James, I get a lot of letters from men about this, and the simple fact is if you get rid of the fluff around the muff, the smell will take care of itself. Providing she showers regularly. But how do you trim her less-than-fragrant forest without her noticing? Simple. Buy her a vibrator then suggest “spicing things up” in the bedroom by blindfolding her. Once she’s enjoying herself, slowly stop using the vibrator and start using your electric razor. With a bit of luck she’ll think you’re just teasing her, not pruning her. Dear Crystal, My ex-boyfriend is trying to blackmail me into getting back with him by threatening to put a sex tape we made on his webcam on the internet. I don’t know what I ever saw in the lying creep. What should I do? Best, Sarah
As another contraction surged through her body, Kate gripped William’s hand with enough power to crush a quail’s egg. She squeezed her eyes shut until tears were forced out from the corners and screamed: “BASTARD!” William glanced at the gynaecologist and asked, “Why does she want to see Harry?” Paul, Darlinghurst I’ve got a library book that’s like Kate and William’s baby. It’s overdue and I’m going to have to pay for it. Nick, Richmond What’s the similarity between the Royal baby and Apple’s iPhone? People would queue up for days just to be the first to welcome its arrival and on the next day will realise it’s the same old shit again. James, Newtown Under the new pornography ban, pictures of David Cameron will be removed from the web, as nobody will be allowed to look at a massive cunt. Pete, Newcastle I woke up this morning thinking. Is It a girl? Is it a boy? Nothing to do with the Royal baby though, more to do with a cheap hooker in Thailand. Barry, Kings Cross What is the main function of the Australia coach? To transport the team from the hotel to the ground. Daniel, Fitzroy
Dear Sarah, I faced a similar situation involving London mayor Boris Johnson a couple of years ago. The only difference was it was me blackmailing him (there’s just something about that Worzel Gummidge hair that sets my knickers dripping). He got out of it by paying me a lump sum and giving me the run of Kensington Palace at weekends, but assuming you don’t have unlimited wealth at your disposal, you’ll have to be more cunning. Lucky for you, I have just the plan. First, you need to find a virusridden website filled with the most degrading and illegal sex acts ever created by mentally disturbed perverts - I’m thinking men dressed as Jimmy Krankie sucking off white tigers while shoving heroin-induced hamsters up their sphincters and pushing their cocks into a hornets’ nest (i.e. a typical night at Kensington Palace for Boris and me). Then send a flirty message to your ex with a link to the website (tell him it’s a link to some lingerie or something). Not only will the virus fuck up his computer (and with a bit of luck destroy the sex tape), but if you call the police they will then search and confiscate his hard-drive, and put him on the sex offenders register. Problem solved. Dear Crystal, I have been dating a wonderful man for over a year now, but he won’t propose to me! He’s a
great guy, he always offers to come shopping with me and helps me pick the latest fashions. We have a lot in common too. We cry at all the same movies and I get along great with his best friends, and often it’s the three of us on a Friday night. He’s really understanding too, he never pressures me to have sex with him, and is content with simply drinking a cocktail and braiding my hair at night. He is the best friend I’ve ever had, we can talk for hours about anything. I seem to have found my soulmate. Why won’t he marry me? Warm Fuzzy Regards Debbie Dear Debbie, This guy seems to be every girl’s dream... loves fashion, sappy movies and braiding hair? Have you checked between his legs yet? This man would much prefer packaging similar to what he’s equipped with rather than the unknown abyss you present in your undercreackers. Wake up Debbie. His “friend” is where he gets all his sexual pleasure that clearly is not taking place in your bed. Drop this guy and find one with mismatched socks, a wrinkled shirt and a beer bottle to his lips. That’s your knight in shining armour!
Jokes What’s the difference between Ricky Ponting and a funeral director? A funeral director doesn’t keep losing the ashes. John, Bondi He’s spent time in prison. . . . been an inspiration to millions. . . loved and hated in equal measure. Sure he’s done things wrong, but who hasn’t? As I heard the news he was seriously ill and on his deathbed, I shared the same thought as everyone else. . . Get well soon, O.J Simpson. Graham, Darlinghurst David Cameron has demanded that Google clamp down on obscene searches. He told an interviewer: “You shouldn’t provide results for some terms that are so depraved and disgusting, I can’t even say them on your show.” I can see why he’s so angry - he is the top result for most of the terms. Jamie, Cottesloe A reporter has just commented, about Tiger Woods at the Open in Muirfield: “It’s inevitable that some of the energy has been sucked out of him.” Naughty of Tiger to sneak women into his room again. Harry, St. Kilda Both of my parents are Christian and so to please them I only had sex after I was married. But apparently, it only counts if it’s with your wife... Ben, Paddington

How To Survive Your First Year Down Under... Just stepped off the plane and scared witless about how to set up for the next year whilst you travel around Australia? Fret not, as BBM’s Omar Soliman has tried and tested the formula below, and survived to tell the tale! The first year is always the scariest, whether it’s at school, university or the big, wide world of employment. Arriving in Australia can add to that list when you realise Mummy is so far away; everything is all new and a bit terrifying. Given time, you will adjust, so here at BBM we want to allay your fears whilst we guide you through those initial 12 months. First, the essentials. Unlike the UK, Australia’s healthcare ain’t free and if you do not want Mummy to fret, then sort out your Medicare (basically the local version of the NHS). Thankfully a reciprocal agreement exists, meaning that us Brits can claim free or subsidised treatment Down Under, all you need is a Medicare card, which is pretty straightforward. Just visit a Medicare office with your passport and visa label, then fill out a form in exchange for a temporary number, which can be used before the plastic card arrives in the post. Communication is also key, and Lord knows you cannot survive for long without a fully-functioning mobile phone. If you left the UK with any remnants of common sense, you would have gotten it unlocked, yeh? Good. Then all you will need is the SIM card, which is easy to organise. Unless you can assure the phone company that you are staying beyond your Working Holiday Visa, (ie sponsorship or residency), you will not be offered a contract, so a prepaid SIM is the way forward. Just be wary of the data charges and the rates for those comical, drunken calls back home. Next up, money. One of the main problems you will face is actually paying for things due to those nasty exchange rates and fiddly travellers cheques making you think twice at every transaction. Much of what you do depends on how readily available your funds are, so get a bank account. Thankfully, this can be achieved in less than an hour. Choose your bank wisely and opt for one that does not charge for rudimentary tasks such as dishonouring direct debits or being overdrawn. Next up, organise a Tax File Number which should only be a phone call to the Australian Taxation Office, and a subsequent
52 www.bbmlive.com
form to complete, so you should be taxed properly. With funds in your own Australian bank, account you are set to do whatever you want. Take a few days drinking in your new surroundings, both metaphorically and literally. You are essentially on holiday, so enjoy it while you formulate plans. The possibilities are endless, yet if this sojourn is a means of getting away from it all and if you have the money to fund a few weeks exploring, then get moving. The worst possible thing you could do is go halfway across the world and not step out of your front door. Few countries rival Australia as a travel destination, so talk to other travellers about their favourite places, then consider where you want to go. Make a list of areas to visit so you can make a rough idea of possible routes, when to go and how to get there. For instance, aim to visit Uluru outside of summer when it’s not dangerously hot. Opt to hit Sydney for the festive season to celebrate Christmas on a beach, then spend New Year’s watching the fireworks. Another thing to consider is simply how big Australia is. To get from A to B can take days and if you have seen Wolf Creek, you may be understandably wary of driving through vast stretches of seemingly empty land. Stay safe and travel in numbers with people you trust, and if you are unsure, there are more convenient options like the train. Indeed, one of the more memorable methods of crossing Australia is on The Ghan, which runs from Darwin at The Top End to Adelaide in South Australia, taking in Alice Springs along the way. If time is on your side then take a road trip, which is ideal towards the south-eastern coast of Australia where they actually have roads, unlike the north. Specifically, take The Great Ocean Road, which is a 243km stretch between the Victorian cities of Torquay and Warrnambool, with gorgeous beaches and stunning coastal views along the way. Further inland are the numerous wine regions, notably the Yarra Valley, Barossa Valley and the Mornington
Peninsula, which could prove healthy picking grounds should the funds begin to run dry. For those who have arrived with a backpack and little else, you had better start earning your keep. Take the time to acclimatise, buy some smart clothes and start badgering agencies for work. The biggest ones come with a better chance of securing work, so focus on the likes of Hays, Adecco, Hudson and Michael Page who all have offices in the major cities. They will only be too happy to help, and due to Australia’s healthy economy, the wages are an improvement on back home. If after six months you want to remain in Australia, then there are options: Option 1 - Gain employer or skill-based sponsorship Option 2 - Specified work. If you are confident you want to extend for a further year, then doing your Specified Work early is a good way of guaranteeing your stay. Try not to think of it as slave labour, rather a three month break into the wilderness to experience the real Australia. Consider the timing and research, the periods which are best for fruit-picking, farmwork, WWOOFing, tree planting or oyster picking, and decide where and when you want to do the 88 days of work. Harvest Trail (http://jobsearch.gov.au/harvesttrail/) is a good website to check what work is available and how to apply. Bear in mind that paid work can be difficult to find, and even then, only the days you work will apply, while voluntary work is usually more bearable and readily available. Home can seem such a long, long way away but you need not fret. Organise the essentials of your Medicare, SIM card, bank account and Tax File Number early, then everything else can fall into place. Whether you want to travel first, work first, work as you travel or fancy staying and doing your Specified Work, the choices available should put your mind at ease, no dramas. By Omar Soliman
