CHECK THIS OUT - SYDNEY PROPER PUBS Now we all know what makes a good pub; lively atmosphere, beautifully brewed beers and a good group of mates with a dash of local music. But, remember, just because you’re away from home; it doesn’t mean that you can’t bring your pub love to Sydney and find a new local 8 (don’t worry we won’t tell your local landlord back at home). Here’s some top pub’s with a genuine pub feel to make you a little less homesick...
Durty Nelly’s Irish Pub
If it’s a home away from home and good Irish banter you’re after with a decent pint and every sport imaginable on the screens then Durty Nelly’s is the best place for you. Located in picturesque Paddington and established 1850, Durty Nelly’s is full of Irish charm and laughter. Every night has something different on offer down at Nelly’s, from Ladies Nights to BOGOF offers on main meals, the added atmosphere of Irish singers and music takes this pub back across the oceans to its homeland. 9-11 Glenmore Road, Paddington
PJ O’Brien’s
With the décor of a proper pub and a bustling atmosphere, this pub has a warm heart and serves great pub food throughout the day. Whether it’s a pint and some nibbles or a great fish dish with a nice glass of vino, this place has plenty of seating for all. Where else would you find an open fire and the sounds of Ireland just around the corner from the harbour? Head down there for the biggest St Paddy’s day party and feel right at home. 57 King Street, CBD
Chinatown Noodle King
The Local Taphouse
For authenticity, of course Chinatown is screaming “oodles of noodles” across the city of Sydney. For every dish you could imagine and the hustle and bustle of a true Asian restaurant, take some time to hang out down Chinatown and see the oriental side of Australia. 357 Sussex Street, CBD
Ok, ok so it’s completely understandable that you want to feel at home when you sit with a pint in your ‘local’ around Sydney. However, you also need to take full advantage of the fact that you are in one of the most amazing cities in the World where the sun shines and the birds are always singing. Inspired by Europe; why not hit the roof terrace with a selection of the finest beers from around the World. Who says a pub isn’t a pub unless it’s dark, dingy and just around the corner from your house? Venture into Darlinghurst and step into the Local Taphouse. On the ground floor is the public bar, complete with those ‘pub smell’ original floorboards, and chesterfields. Climb the stairs to more rooms of pure pub love and onto the roof where there is a log fire on and seating perfect for you and your mates to reminisce pub times at home. 122 Flinders St, Darlinghurst
Wok-On Inn
Shakespeare Hotel
It’s a kind of shame to place a chain restaurant on the list of fine noodle eats around Sydney, but this place does have it right and the popularity of this restaurant proves that. The staff could not be more helpful and willing to make sure that you chose the right dish for your taste buds. Combined with a cold Asian beer and the Sydney sunshine and it’s pretty damn sweet. 80 Oxford St, Paddington
Chinatown Night Market
What’s more English and traditional than a good bit of Shakey? Rich food, cheap prices with a menu of many dishes all for $12.50, which is an absolute steal for the trendy upcoming area of Surry Hills. From chunky lamb shanks to a fine fish curry, ye olde Shakespeare Hotel keeps the proper pub feel alive and kicking. Not just a warm atmosphere, the quirky traditional setting established in 1879 makes it feel like you’ve been coming to this pub for years. With happy hours a plenty and the non-pretentious vibe - the Shakespeare Hotel is everyone’s local. 200 Devonshire St, Surry Hills
Become part of the authentic celebration of wonderful Asian food and culture as more than fifty market stalls line Chinatown and create the feel of traditional China in all its glory. Every Friday evening, begin the weekend with some top noodle dishes and more and feel the spirit and passion for food be celebrated through the secrets. Light up Sydney and have a completely new and exciting experience, Sydney doesn’t always have to be Australian. Open Fridays from 4pm- 11pm Dixon Street Mall, China Town By Frankie Salt
BEST NOODLES IN TOWN Sydney is a diverse city, catering for all kinds of taste buds. However, eating somewhere that tastes as it should with a pinch of authenticity and a slice of spice, Noodle eats are a popular thing in the city. Noodles of all shapes and sizes should be cooked with love and a passion for original oriental flavour. Here’s a few of our favourite hang outs for noodle appreciation:
Simply Noodles
For healthy, simple noodles that taste great and have an authentic oriental taste, Simply Noodles has it all on offer. Usually drawing in a younger clientele due to the great discounts they shout about, Simply Noodles does exactly what it says on the tin in a healthy and tasty way. 273 King Street, Newtown

CHECK THIS OUT - SYDNEY Taronga Zoo In the city of Sydney famous for its Opera House, the beautiful harbour bridge and its booming beaches; it makes it hard to look outside the ‘city box’. Sometimes you have to look deeper outside a city to see some real hidden gems always worth a fun day out. Step onto the ferry down at the harbour and within 15 minutes you can step off into a world of the unknown, surrounding yourself with over 2,600 amazing animals divided into eight zoogeographic regions. From the meerkats to the platypus, these animals are full of character and life, and are always happy to see new visitors in the zoo. This year, the Zoo will be looking at the past 35 years of memories and how the zoo has created such a great place for its animals and for its visitors. Since the zoo opened in 1977, Cuddles the African Elephant has been a resident, what a trooper. Cuddles has seen the zoo evolve into the institution it is today, creating pleasurable days out for people of all ages. “The Zoo has achieved unbelievable things for the animal world over its 35 year history including releasing Przewalski’s Horse back into the wild in Mongolia, achieving the world first Black Rhino embryo via IVF, breeding the first Galapagos Tortoise hatchling in Australasia as well as many important breeding successes for critically endangered animals. The Zoo has also recently created a new free access area, which is the first of its kind in NSW and allows visitors to see Primates for free.” Taronga Zoo has so many exciting opportunities for its visitors. The Taronga ‘Roar and Snore’ is a once in a lifetime experience. Sleeping under the stars in a zoo with Sydney’s best view on one side and a view of the animals on the other. In these tents you can never get out of bed on the ‘wrong side’, with the beds fully furnished with cuddly linen, this place is where dreams are made. Sleep and wake up next to the animals, feed the animals their breakfast and experience the zoo before everyone else, it can unleash the animal in you! There’s such a vast and busy schedule for the day, if only school had been this fun! From 9am you can attend the talks, feeds and shows with animals varying from the black rhino, meerkats, giraffes, elephants, tigers and much more. It’s a nonstop animal party! You don’t have to be an animal fan to have an absolute banger of a day out at Taronga Zoo.
Harlem On Central, Manly Review This might as well be the Prohibition era 1920s as after ten minutes of traipsing up and down Manly’s Central Avenue, the entrance to Harlem on Central can easily elude. Forget Google Maps, the bar actually sits discreetly on the corner of Central Avenue and Sydney Road. The signs are good even marked by their absence. There is simply an opening via a black door; no markings, no bouncers, just a black fronted entrance. Indeed, why have gaudy neon when word of mouth can suffice? Step inside and this is a speakeasy in everything but the decade. Dimly lit and oozing class, one glance at the jaw gaping multitude of bottles behind the bar and you are encased. I am greeted by Clem who draws me in like an old friend leading me into her home. Though the seats look luxurious enough the bar needs someone simply to give the selection of spirits and liquors the attention they so badly merit. You can spend hours simply sitting and admiring the bottles but glance further up and you will note the imported decanter lights from UK Designer of the Year, Lee Broom. You can but you are better off sampling the cocktail menu and I dig into a Georgie Best. No, the late, great Manchester United star did not merely inspire the suave blend of Chivas, cloudy apple and dry ginger, he made it. At least that is what the owner, Kieran Bailey, attests and who would stop Best if he leapt behind the bar? The cocktail itself is wickedly refreshing and like the great man himself, it oozes class. Couples lounge cozily in leather backed chairs and groups of girls chatter discreetly in the corner. With such opulence the bar dances a fine line between your local and a place to impress on a date. It could easily be both. Keep staring at the bar and you will notice the spirit bottles under lock and key. Become a member, bide your time on a waiting list, buy a bottle and your favourite tipple has a home away from prying eyes for you to enjoy at your leisure.
Learn a lot, love a lot, smile a lot but just beware of the 3pm Spider talk, hakuna matata! Check out www.taronga.org.au for all the information you need, and your chance to sponsor a little or a big friend! Please remember just how much this zoo does for the environment and the conservation of these animals. Visit the website to build your own personal visitors guide for the day and to beat the queues buy your tickets online. By Frankie Salt
There are enough spirits of the day to choose from as shelves are double banked with distinctive bottles of gin, rum, whisky and cognac. Once you have made your mind up the bar staff can steer you through the selection to marry your taste with a bottle. Tonight my man with the plan is James and he expertly mixes a Godfather for my slab of ribs. Served in cut glass with chunky bits of ice, the cocktail is to be savoured; composing of Johnnie Walker Double Black soothed by Amaretto served with orange oils and a slither of peel. The ribs hit the spot and mirror the bar for trademark understated style backed by substance. On a wooden slab the ribs are flavoursome, succulent but not overly sticky. The meat falls off the bone and the menacing slices of red chilli bounce mischievously with the meat. Such a well known dish yet presented simply and pulled off smartly with notable panache. Time flies when you have so much to enjoy and before long James tempts me into one for the road (or in this case ferry). Something special no less as I doubt many bars house Plantation Guatamalan Rum but the drab goes down smooth with a deep complexion, almost as if trying to drink treacle. With so many bars to choose from, Harlem impresses in the details. From the classy cocktails in cut glass crystal to the decanter lights that gift the venue an inviting hue, the bar is to be soaked in, not just frequented. By Omar Soliman

St Patrick's Day We at BBM love a good old St Paddy’s Day piss up, and seeing as loads of Australian’s are of Irish decent, they too like to go tits for St Guinness Day. Australia has been celebrating St Patrick’s Day since 1810 when Governor, Lachlan Macquarie, declared the date an official day of celebration for the Irish and those of Irish heritage and 200 years later the party is still going strong. We’ve picked out some of our favourite ways for you to spend St Patrick’s Day wherever you are in the country. The biggest event on the St Paddy’s day calendar is without doubt the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Sydney. This year, the parade will take place on Sunday 18th March beginning at midday from outside the town hall with live entertainment from 10.30. As usual, the parade will be a whirl of amazing floats, marching bands and walking groups, as well as some awesome fancy dress costumes. The parade finishes at Hyde Park where celebrations will continue from 1pm in the form of stages with Irish music and dancing, Irish food stalls for your stew and soda bread, children’s areas and of course, a well-stocked bar. In the children’s area the kids can go wild with face painting, bouncy castles, clowns, animal rides and music performances. Bridie O’Reilly’s in Melbourne will also be going the whole hog for Ireland’s patron saint. Open from 10am you can sit down to a hearty Irish breakfast complete
with the obligatory pint of the black stuff, then chill out until the $2 garden BBQ gets going in the afternoon. If you’re still standing by the evening then make sure you catch The Keilli Kings playing from 10pm before Stand and Deliver take over until 3am. “Oh Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling...” If you’re over in Western Australia, Perth’s favourite Irish pub, Rosy O’Grady’s, will be throwing their annual St Patrick’s Day party on Saturday 17th March. Somewhat of a Perth legend, the good people at Rosy’s host one hell of an all day street party with great food, plenty of Guinness and bad Irish jokes to keep you going all through the day and well into the night. CHECK THIS OUT - MELBOURNE Shanghai Noodle House
If it’s authenticity you’re after then this place ticks all of the boxes. In the centre of Chinatown, you will find this noodle house to be not so appealing at first glance. However, as you step inside, the smells of the spices will set your taste buds booming in anticipation. Their selection is fantastic and the service is always a winner. 242 Little Bourke Street (Enter from Tattersalls Lane)
The Supper Inn
It’s after midnight; bellies are rumblin’ and there’s no place that serves decent food at this time? Wrong- The Supper Inn is a Melbourne institution, serving Melbournians tasty oriental grub for decades. It’s always busy and full of people who have had a drink and need some munch. The food is of a good standard and noodle dishes are loved in here. 15 Celestial Avenue
Sumos Noodle and Sushi
Made from scratch and with the freshest of ingredients, North Melbourne is a lucky place to have such a great noodle restaurant with friendly staff to top it off. The prices are suited to those on a budget and you can make a night of it by sitting in, or take it home with you to enjoy in front of a movie. 520 Macaulay Road Kensington
This week long festival inspires and connects designers, retailers, shoppers and people within the fashion industry, in a week of fashion filled activities. Established in 1997, Melbourne Fashion Festival is now in its 17th year featuring catwalk shows, a National Graduate Showcase, Fashion Industry forums, along with exhibitions and events all linking to the week. L’Oreal Paris are responsible for the runway fashion shows running this week, many presented by big names in the fashion publication arena, such as Vogue.com, InStyle and Grazia. The catwalk shows feature numerous designers, saving time for running around the shows in other cities, with 7 runway shows across the week featuring designers such as Alex Perry, Camilla and Marc, Joveeba and Nicola Finetti. The week also houses the Independent Runway featuring bold, innovative and edgy collections from designers such as Extinct, Jolet and Song for the Mute. Burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese will also premiering her lingerie line ‘Von Follies by Dita Von Teese’ for Target Australia. Aside from the amazing fashion shows, the week also gives way for classes and demonstrations and lectures and forums, such as the ‘QV Lunchtime Style Series’, a series of workshops by Melbourne fashion insiders regarding the biggest fashion and home trends. There are many new exhibitions and fashion film events taking place, including the welcome launch of the Grace Kelly: Style Icon exhibition. Originally housed at the V&A museum in London, Grace Kelly: Style Icon, explores the style evolution of Princess Grace of Monaco, giving attendees the chance to get up close and personal with pieces of Kelly’s personal wardrobe including haute couture gowns. Although a small exhibition in the UK, it’s a wonderful experience to view her jewels and clothes so closely. If you fancy getting some new threads whilst clearing out your wardrobe, then the Clothing Exchange could be the place for you. The Exchange takes place on the 12th March, and can allow fashionistas the chance to swap up to six pieces of clothing or accessories whilst bagging themselves some goodies.
Proper Pubs
Whether you have been working hard or playing harder- a pint in the Melbourne sun has to be top of the list on a chilled afternoon. If it’s a proper beer in a proper pub that you’re after, or maybe a good bit of pub grub to go with that drink or three- look no further than our favourite spots. Melbourne may have a great vibe for bars; but don’t forget the old school quaint pub hang-outs for that perfect afternoon with your mates.
The whole city will be involved over Melbourne Fashion Festival, with many high street retailers giving up their street facing windows to local design talent in order to create new and eye-catching window displays. Look for the Peroni blue ribbon around the city to spot those windows. Melbourne is set to be a super fashionable hive of activity over its Fashion Week whether it’s sitting at a fashion show, feeding your intellect at talks and conferences, or simply checking out exhibitions to get into the fashion week feeling, there is absolutely something for everybody.
The Portland
When a game of pool and a pint is all that you have on your mind, The Portland hotel will hit the spot. This place isn’t too badly priced and pool-aplenty to keep you entertained. This place has a warming atmosphere and the menu will appeal to all tastes. 127 Russell Street
There’s so much to offer, so head over to the Melbourne Fashion Festival website (www.lmff.com.au) and download yourself the guide which will give you the details on all the events and shows available. Now excuse us, we’re heading to dust off our finest pieces to rock this Melbourne Fashion Festival 2012. By David Mahoney
The Bottom End
Is it a pub? Is it a disco? Is it a diner? What year are we in? 2012? 1950? Ah who cares! This joint is cool and confusing and the food is pretty damn good. If you like pubs with a bit of a twist then head for The Bottom End. We can’t promise you a good British-feel pub- but we can predict a good time. Quirky is an understatement- go and check it out for yourselves and get funky in this hidden gem. 579 Little Collins Street
Pugg Mahones Irish Pub
Enough sports to last you a lifetime and a bit of heart and soul from the Irish side of the World- Pugg Mahones has a great feel to it. This place maintains a high standard of food and service and a vast selection of beers for you to choose from whilst watching the footy. 112 Hardware Street
The Sherlock Homes Inn
Down in the dark basement of Collins St, hides this hang out for all things English and in need of a decent pint. This tavern takes you back to the days of olde England, creating a humble feel and a quiz night to shout about! Meal deals are often on throughout the week and live music every Thursday to entertain. Top scorer, making you feel just at home. Basement 415 Collins Street
Top Hair Salons It’s amazing how even just a little trim can you make you feel like new. However, Australia isn’t know for it’s cheap deals and so if you’re in desperate need of some hairdressing heaven; the prices can be a little daunting. However, this is where BBM comes in handy. There are certain salons secretly hiding away which offer some top deals and bargain barnet styling to suit the budgets of all ranges. Here’s for the lower budget range…
BIBA Academy- The Basement
If you have some time on your hands and you want a bargain cut without the risk, head to Biba Academy for an appointment with the trainees. But don’t be put off by the ‘trainee’ stigma, they are well supervised and of course very conscientious when it comes to their styling and making sure it is right for the customer. This place has great reviews and every customer leaves happy with the knowledge that a top hairdresser in the making has mastered their hair. The supervisor will always step in and take over towards the end and make sure the cut is to perfection. A damn good salon you can trust as “the nation’s leading industry education house for the last 30 years”. A great atmosphere and cut. 401 Swanston Street (03) 9663 3327
Pro Trim
In the centre of Chinatown, you will find this small and friendly salon where you can have a cut for $50 and feel like a newbie when you leave. There’s nothing fancy or pretentious about this salon but it does exactly what it says on the tin. Shop 2, 128 Little Bourke Street (03)9663 9828
Renaissance
A great team of stylists and a haircut for under $50? What more do you want from a city centre salon? If you liked to be looked after and have a good chinwag with your stylist- this place is for you. When you call, discuss your length of hair and what you want and they will be sure to match you to the right hairdresser. Tivoli Arcade off Bourke Street (03)9654 5497
Best Noodles In Town At some point during your time in Melbourne, it is a must to have a wander through Chinatown or maybe just hit the city for a taste of the Orient. There are plenty of noodle bars around the city; but not all of them can pass for an authentic taste where noodle-nonsense is a no-go scenario. Here’s some of the finest in town.
Yen Sushi and Noodles
This is a great little place if you need noodles quick sharp. Authentic flavours and generous servings isn’t all this place has to offer. A vast menu of different noodle dishes and spice levels; this place has nothing but rave reviews. Have a taste of their signature dish Pad Thai and you will realize why this Noodle hangout is so popular. 12 Centre Place, 530 Little Collins street
Just Cuts A franchise hairdressers; but cheap and cheerful all the same. This place is just a “walk-in and do the job there and then” kind of salon- and they handle the lunch rush pretty spot-on too. However, if it is a more delicate operation and a whole new re-style is on the cards perhaps an appointment only salon will do you a higher level of justice. Just-cuts does exactly that and for $30, it’s a pretty good deal. 385 Bourke Street Melbourne CBD By Frankie Salt
Melbourne Fashion Festival With fashion week’s in full swing across the globe, 8th - 15th March sees the return of L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. An amazing launch pad to showcase the finest Australian designers that are keeping the Australian fashion industry alive, whilst featuring talks from industry insiders and high street contributions.
Melbourne International Comedy Festival
Melbourne is once again gearing up for its annual comedy highlight, The Melbourne International Comedy Festival - a month long of laughter to be held between 28th March and 22nd April. Now in its twenty-sixth year, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival has come a long way since its beginning back in 1987. Back then, Barry Humphries and Peter Cook’s brainchild pulled in only a few thousand punters with its 50 shows. Today, the festival program contains nearly 400 performances and pulls in around 500,000 eager comedy fans from all over the world. Alongside Edinburgh and Montreal, it is one of the three big comedy festivals of the year and is the springboard from which some of Australia’s biggest and best comedy talent is launched. One of the biggest draws of the festival is its non-curated, free-for-all formula. As festival director Susan Provan spells out, “In terms of the Australians and New Zealanders, it’s a completely open program, so anyone who wants to participate can.” The other draw is the festival’s accessibility, with an average ticket costing around $22 you get to keep plenty of cash in the beer fund. As well as its plethora of one-off shows from up-and coming comedians, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival also holds a host of regular, hugely popular events. One of the most loved is the Comedy Festival Gala, the opening night super show that showcases short acts from many headline and award-winning comedians performing shows at the festival. It has become known as the festival’s flagship event and so always sells out weeks in advance, though don’t worry if you can’t get a ticket as you can catch it on Network Ten a few days later. Another highlight of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is The Great Debate, in which two teams of comedians go head to head to debate important topics like ‘laughter is better than sex’ and ‘coming first is all that matters.’ The winners are decided by audience applause, of which there is always plenty! Upfront is the festival’s female only event, where some of the world’s funniest women get on stage in front of a regularly packed house to shock, scandalize and amuse their fans. The festival doesn’t disappoint on the international headliner front either, with some of the worlds biggest acts gracing its stages. This year will see the Australian debut of the outrageous American comedienne Wanda Sykes, who regularly sells out stadium gigs in the US and who Provan has been trying to nab for the festival for 10 years. Joining Sykes in the headline queue will be British comedienne Shappi Khorsandi who will be returning to the festival after a seven-year hiatus. London based Australians Sarah Kendall and Celia Pacquola will also be coming back to Melbourne with new shows, along with Steven Gates (aka Gatesey) from Tripod and Bob Franklin with their hotly tipped new co-written show. However, as great as these guys may be, the real treasure of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is most often to be found in one of the many small shows. As Provan advises, to get the best out of the festival you should “go and see at least five things you’ve never heard of, because every year you’ve got the opportunity of finding people who will go on to be the next big thing.” Plus, they’re always cheap, leaving that beer fund well stocked while you laugh your arse off at comedy’s rising stars. There was a time when Melbourne was considered Australia’s premiere city, but its acclaim was lost when a battle with Sydney to be titled capital ended with the creation of Canberra. Whilst Sydney went on to be known for the beauty of Sydney Harbour, Melbourne sunk from note on many a tourist’s trail. However, from the hustle and bustle of the CBD through to its notoriety as the spiritual home of Australian Arts - Melbourne is busy city that never rushes but equally never sleeps - which has no doubt lead to it ranking as one of the world’s top three most liveable cities! Though the chance to see the world’s largest tram network is hardly a major pulling factor, Melbourne’s bustling laneways must prove something of a pull. The tiny alleys are bustling with small businesses and equate to graffiti heaven! However, if urban jungle isn’t your scene - why not lose yourself in one of Melbourne’s many parks? There is a reason for the state of Victoria being known as the garden state, and its state capital sees no reason to be an exception to the rule. Whilst Melbourne is packed to the brim with parks, the most impressive lies just a five minute walk from the CBD. The Royal Botanic Gardens boast plant species both common and rare alongside beautiful birds - be careful as you may end up feeling like Alice in Wonderland! And for those sports fans - don’t forget that Melbourne has been home to both the Olympics (1956) and Commonwealth Games (1996) and also hosts everything from the Australian Open (tennis) to the F1 (motor sports) and of course, the Melbourne Cup (horse racing). This leads to a plentitude of stadium tours and exercise opportunities. Last, but of course not least, before we take a closer look at some of Melbourne’s suburbs, a moment has to be taken to celebrate Melbourne’s most famous street - Ramsay Street. Whilst Erinsborough may only exist in the land of TV, pop down to Pinoak Court in Vermouth South and you may just recognise a house or two...

Kite Surfing the coast For all you adrenaline junkies out there if you haven’t tried Kite surfing yet, you better add that one to the ‘been there, done that, got the t-shirt’ list. A fierce and fun combination of a kite and a board, kite surfing incorporates elements from wakeboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding and gymnastics. If it seems a little bit daunting at first, have no fear, because fearlessness is the only true asset you need to learn kite-surf! Back in the 80s, thrill seekers tried to combine kites with many sporting activities, such as canoeing, ice skating, water skiing and roller skating, but it wasn’t until the 90s that several people clung onto the concept of kites and surfing, which has evolved into the extreme sport of kite-surfing that has become so popular today. Kite surfing is the key sport to induce an unforgettable rush whilst you surf the waves to new heights using the ocean winds to their full potential. If you’re heading up to Queensland Agnes Water is a prime location to delve into the experience that is kite surfing. Kitesurf 1770 is based in Agnes Water, a 7-hour drive from Southport, Queensland. But if you’re down in Sydney then why not hop on a flight up to Queensland for a weekend of fun filled thrills. Agnes Water is a great place to get lessons and and teaches in line with the International Kiteboarding Organisation. Although exciting, kitesurfing can be dangerous if not enjoyed safely, and so various levels can be achieved as your skills improve to ensure you get the most out of the sport and can achieve personal goals. Lessons start from $95, but there are a variety of to choose from, ranging from “One-to-One” sessions, to 2-hour “Teaser” or 4-hour “Quicky” sessions depending on what your capabilities are.
For the experienced kite surfer, hire services are available to rent out equipment for the day. With idyllic white sands, and clear blue sea, Agnes Bay provides a beautiful setting to enjoy the sport in, with plenty of natural attractions surrounding the area to keep you occupied when you’re not sailing over the waters. The 1770 Headland peninsula is one of the small number of locations you can watch the sunrise and sunset over water in the same place. For a real adventure into the wilderness, take part in one of Kitesurf 1770’s organised tours and “Surfari’s”. They offer day trips including lessons, travel, food and equipment hire through Eurimbula National Park to Middle Creek, and to Deepwater National Park. Both locations have shallow waters making these trips accessible to kite-surfers of all levels of experience. If one day simply isn’t enough, why not take part in the Broadwater Haven Eco Weekend for a true kite-surfing get-away? You’ll stay in secluded cabins with laundry, fireplace (and most importantly) BBQ facilities located minutes away from the beach and estuary, where you’ll stay for two nights, and two days. It is kite-surfing heaven by any standards. Regions of Western Australia also offer great kite surfing locations. Perth beaches are ideal kite surfing locations. During the hot summer months the breeze really kicks up a storm creating the ideal conditions for kite surfing. Some of the top beaches to check out are Leighton Beach near Fremantle, Brighton Beach (just south of Scarborough) or Pinnaroo Point and Mullaloo Beach in the northern suburbs. If you’re near Penguin Island, then it’s well worth checking out Shoalwater Bay, as it is one of the premier flat water locations near Perth making it perfect for kite surfing, and an prime location for learners who wish to perfect their body dragging skills.
For the more experienced kite surfer, head to ‘Gero’ as it has the reputation of being one of the windiest spots on the West Australian coast. With gusty ocean winds this is a popular destination from November through to March, as are
.
spots such as Point Moore, Sunset Beach and St George’s Beach popular Over in New South Wales, there are a bevvy of beaches to pick from for all your kite surfing needs. Safe beaches for the less experienced kite surfer can be found in just outside of Sydney in New Castle. However if you haven’t got much time to skip out of town why not head to North Botany, Wanda, Dolls Point or Hollywoods. If you’re really experienced and want to get straight out on to the big waves then Manly is also a good place for really getting the blood pumping whilst you ride the waves to your excitement’s content. PERTH MAP 1
2
Perth, the capital of Western Australia, epitomizes the modern urban scene. It’s definitely isolated. But with its contemporary architecture, vibrant art scene, and countless restaurants capped off with funky bars and swish nightclubs, you won’t feel like you’ve staggered onto the scene of an old Western flick. And the locals here are a very nice complement with their friendliness, youthfulness and diversity. Perth’s CBD is all glass towers and wind tunnels, like any city. But graciously absent is the coldblooded corporate culture that so permeates Sydney and Melbourne. While you’re in Perth, check out the Perth Mint, on the corner of Hay and Hill Streets. It boasts the world’s largest collection of gold nuggets. Take a walk along the Swan River on Riverside Drive, head up to the Hay and Murray Street Malls, amble over to Northbridge for lunch and walk back down to Barrack St Jetty in time for one of the afternoon ferries from Barrack St Jetty to South Perth.
3
On the south side of the Swan River you’ll find Perth Zoo. The Perth Zoo has over 1500 animals comprising 200 different species. Local animal celebrities to be found here include kangaroos, koalas, numbats, emus, and dingoes.
4
Despite existing on the fringe of an already isolated continent, Perth and Western Australia are also abuzz with modern cultural activity. In fact WA’s isolation has resulted in cultural traditions that are truly unique and quite distinct from their urban Aussie counterparts to the east. Perth has more hours of sunshine then any other state capital in Australia. This has given rise to a prolific and rich outdoor culture. Entertaining, socializing and drinking outdoors, is simply the way life is lived over here. Western Australia is also the backdrop for such epics as Australia the movie, Rabbit Proof Fence and author Tim Winton’s multi award winning novel Dirt Music. The annual Perth Arts Festival is an arts fest of major international standing with a 55 year history with loads of free entertainment and gigs. WHALE SHARK SEASON - NINGALOO REEF Starting just above Carnarvon, along the Coral Coast, the pristine Ningaloo Reef Marine Park offers 260 kilometres of one of the largest fringing coral reefs in the world, with some points as close to 100 metres off shore – meaning you can just snorkel out to it from the beach. In contrast to its east coast counterpart (The Great Barrier Reef) Ningaloo Reef is much less developed for tourism, in turn rendering it far less crowded. Favoured activities are swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, surfing, just chillin’ on the beach, fishing and boating. Most importantly - the weather can be relied upon to be warm all year round. Ningaloo Reef is made up of over 250 species of coral (hard and soft) and is home to 520 species of fish along with Manta rays, Humpback whales, Dugungs, Sea Turtles and the magnificent Whale sharks, who make themselves known, from mid March through to late July. There are also opportunities to see humpback and southern right whales cavorting in Exmouth Gulf with their calves or migrating along the coast between August to November. A number of local operators offer whale shark, diving, snorkelling, fishing and glass bottom boat cruises and or day trips. The area is serviced from the town of Exmouth and the small settlement of Coral Bay. Each offers a range of accommodation from camping through to 5 star and forward booking is a must, particularly in high season. Located 1,259km north of Perth, Exmouth is the gateway to Cape Range National Park and Ningaloo Reef and is situated directly on the coast offering a huge variety of water based activities. By the time you leave you will be sun kissed and well spoiled after hours of surfing, scuba diving, snorkelling, boating, or just relaxing on the beach. There is an airport at Exmouth and from there is 152km by road to Coral Bay. When it comes to accommodation Exmouth has several hostels and caravan parks. These are nicely complemented by a selection of restaurants, shops, cafes, and two pubs plus the nightclub Bamboo Bar, which is located at the Pot Shot Hotel. After you get bored with the beach and have done your fair share of partying in town head on over to Cape Range National Park just a short drive away. At Cape Range National Park you will find spectacular rocky gorges, carved out by ancient rivers, and rugged natural scenery. Book a boat trip along Yardie Creek and look out for wallabies, euro kangaroos, and birds of prey. Great surf breaks can also be found in the region. Rays and dolphins have been known to join surfers as they ride the waves. A popular reef break just off-shore is located by the Vlamingh Lighthouse which is situated right before the Mildura Wreck on the Mildura Wreck Road. See www.exmouthwa.com.au If looking for the once in a lifetime experience of swimming with the giant whale sharks, best to book with your tour operator and make sure that you are around a couple of days after your whale shark tour date as most companies offer a “no sighting policy” meaning that if the whale sharks don’t show on the day of your tour, you’ll be taken out the next possible day at no extra cost. As to be expected, nature is not 100% predictable. A typical whale shark day trip involves being picked up from your accommodation between 7 - 8am. From there you’ll be taken to the beach and set off by boat to the outer reef. Morning tea, snacks and a sumptuous lunch are generally included. You will be given a thorough briefing once on board as to what to expect and procedures to be followed when interacting with the whale sharks. Spotter planes are actively looking for whale sharks from above and while you “wait” there are options to go snorkelling and or/ scuba diving. Once alerted by the plane’s pilot to the where abouts of a whale shark, or whale sharks, your captain will get you to the action as quickly as possible. During this time, you can “kit” up with snorkel, mask, flippers and wet suit if desired. This equipment is all inclusive of your day trip. Once close enough you can take the plunge and experience this absolute bucket list adventure. Most people say that, beyond the sheer adrenalin of swimming along side these massive but gentle creatures, that they are not only awestruck, but humbled.

Fast facts:
• Whale sharks are actually a type of fish, so not mammals as the name suggests. • Despite its size, the whale shark are actually quite gentle and can ‘play’ with humans. • They are known to migrate every spring to the continental shelf of the central west coast of Australia. The coral spawning of the area’s Ningaloo Reef provides the whale shark with an abundant supply of plankton. • Whale sharks sighted in the Ningaloo region are usually 5 - 9 metres long. The largest ever confirmed individual had a length of 12.65 metres and a weight of more than 21.5 tonnes. • The whale shark, Rhincodon typus, is a slow-moving filter feeding shark and the largest existent fish species. • This distinctively-marked fish is the only member of its genus Rhincodon and its family, Rhincodontidae. • The species originated about 60 million years ago. • The whale shark is found in tropical and warm oceans and lives in the open sea with a life span of about 70 years. • The whale shark is a filter feeder – one of only three known filter feeding shark species. It feeds on macro-algae, plankton, krill, Christmas Island red crab larvae, and small nektonic life such as small squid or vertebrates. It also feeds on small fish and the clouds of eggs and sperm during mass spawning of fish shoals. • Little is actually known about the breeding and life cycle of whale sharks. Neither their mating nor pupping has ever been observed. It is thought that whale sharks are ovoviviparous, meaning that the eggs remain in the body and the females give birth to live young.

Polaroid are known for their protective polarized lenses and broad sports ranges, with specialized designs for everything from extreme sports to fishing, as well as stylish designs for men, women and children. We love Topshop’s Tortoiseshell version ($32), but for more funky, pastel shades head to ASOS or Urban Outfitters. The summer pin-up look is being sported by celebrities from Katy Perry to the Kardashians, so just add a flick of eyeliner and the perfect pout, and this timeless look is yours! Of course, it wouldn’t be summer without a shiny new pair of Ray Bans! For a cool, classic look that works for guy or girls, dressed up or dressed down, Ray Bans are the obvious choice. Their timelessness justifies the price tag, so check out their trademark aviators and wayfarers for a summer staple that will be the cherry on top of your wardrobe, year after year. By Ella White

MUSIC NEWS ALBUM REVIEWS
and now Goddard and new dance-partner Raf Rundell have done it again with The 2 Bears. Obviously influenced by the Chicago house-scene of the late 90’s, ‘Be Strong’ is 12 tracks that capture much of the feel good attitude that permeates through a good night out. 2 Bears have managed to create an album that instantly snaps you to the weekend. The album is mostly fun, early on in the album we get the jovial ‘Bear Hug’, and a couple of tracks later, the chilled out ‘Warm & Easy’, both with foottappingly good melodies and lyrics that will make you smile the first time you hear them, and get excited that they’re coming up on repeat listens: “It gets lonely in the woods, but right now I’m here in the hood, let’s have a Bear Hug.” That’s not to say that they don’t exhibit a serious side with a couple of the later tracks; ‘Time In Mind’s jaunty stylings belying the fact that “time in mind should be easy to do” and offering a nice interpretation of subconsciousness, while ‘Increase Your Faith’s eerie synths tell us that “They haven’t got a pill to increase your faith...your confidence”; it’s the come-down after the buoyant mood beforehand. Luckily, there’s another few tracks to go before the digital needle stops playing, and by the end, your mood will be sufficiently replenished, and you’ll be eager to give it another go. We’ve found ourselves listening to this much more than we anticipated; it’s an album that works with its simplicity. Stand-out tracks are hard to choose, but lead single ‘Work’, (“We gotta work / for each other / for the future”) the aforementioned ‘Warm & Easy’, ‘Take a Look Around’, and the closing track ‘Church’, (a classic builder of a feel-good song, with steel drums!) are ones to listen out for.
Lana Del Rey – Born to Die You would have to be living under a rock to not know that Lana del Rey, the sultry siren and internet sensation, is finally releasing her debut album ‘Born to Die.’ Upon her sudden arrival last summer, Lana quickly rode the crest of the social media wave to mass appeal with her stunning debut, the double-a side release ‘Video Games/Blue Jeans’. With sublimely cool videos to match and a unique look she stepped effortlessly into the public consciousness. Forty odd million YouTube plays and a lot of hype later, questions began to be raised. Where had she come from? Had she had surgery? Was she manufactured? She used to be called Lizzy Grant didn’t she? Hype has very recently turned to hate, but whether positive or negative, the column inches are still very much devoted to the trials and tribulations of the mysterious Miss Del Rey.
Anyway, on to The Broken Man; a seven song LP released by Elliott in January 2012. Beginning with the epic, Latino-tinged acoustics of ‘Oh How We Fell’, The Broken Man is an interesting and often compelling look in the psyche of a man befallen by sadness, loneliness and rejection. Elliott’s acoustic guitar goes from being gently finger-picked to loudly plucked and strummed in a sort of Nick Drake meets Ennio Morricone sort of way, as strings, piano and occasional electronic flourishes emerge from the distance. There is no doubt that the aforementioned Morricone’s Spaghetti Western soundtracks are a profound influence on the album, and no doubt either that Elliott is a very talented guitarist. Furthermore, his laid-back, downbeat and morose vocals really complement the musical setting and themes of the record. ‘Dust, Flesh And Bones’ is the centrepiece and highlight of the album, a gorgeous acoustic melody married with a freaky string section and eerie Western freakout, along with the constant sorrowful refrain of “this is how it feels to be alone.” Overall, The Broken Man is a highly recommendable release that arguably needs repeated listens to fully reveal its full splendour.
Regardless of the numerous stories and opinions, ‘Born to Die’ is an album that deserves to be listened to without prejudice. A somewhat overly generous collection of fifteen tracks lead us on an innovative, imaginative and genuinely emotive journey with one of America’s most talented new singer/songwriters.
SINGLE REVIEWS
Latest single and opening track ‘Born to Die’ sets the classic tone, ‘Off to the Races’ provides a glimmer of a more up-tempo sound before the notable ‘Blue Jeans’ and then the truly epochal ‘Video Games’ make their presence known. With the singles run and done, the final ten tracks are somewhat of a mixed bag, each almost competing with the one before it to be the album’s anthemic, atmospheric pinnacle. ‘Diet Mountain Dew’ is a highlight, its bright and rhythmically breezy chorus are sure to make it a future single. ‘Radio’ is a slow burner, every word from her bee-stung lips (or is it collagen?), treacle-sweet with just enough orchestral character to carry what is a very captivating song. Penultimate song ‘Lolita’ ,with its cinematic stabs and heavy production, presents Lana with a little more attitude whilst ‘Lucky Ones’ finishes the album beautifully, nicely showcasing Lana’s range and tonality to great effect. Whilst the album stands up well, it’s not all killer, there is some filler, and one does wonder why they felt the need to incorporate fifteen tracks. While no song quite matches the majestic sobriety of ‘Video Games’ the album is one that deserves to be listened to over and over again to fully appreciate its quality. Quite how much work went into making the album so effortlessly cool is unknown but listen to the album for what it is, a stunning debut from a talented artist who is doing more than most to fill the gaping soulful hole left behind by Amy Winehouse. Lana’s voice is an aural splendor, a wonderfully interwoven mix of classic jazz tones and Kate Bush. Love her or love to hate her, this Marmite mistress has released an album certain to make many a musical mind moisten.
Django Django - ‘Django Django’ Psychedelic art-pop foursome Django Django were formed in 2008 in Dalston, London but the band members all met a few years before whilst studying at the Edinburgh College of Art. Those art-school roots are evident on their experimental new LP, and first official album, simply titled Django Django. The album is a carefully crafted and sonically varied patchwork of indie rock, folk and electro-pop, and constitutes a confident start for the London-based band. The thumping beats and irresistible chorus of the album’s first single ‘Default’ and acoustic stomp of the fourth track ‘Firewater’ are early highlights with lead singer Vinny Neff’s vocals aided by an array of echoing effects and overdubbing as tribal drums and electronic flourishes provide ample backing. The opening of ‘Waveform’ recalls the sound of that ubiquitous and annoying single from that Levi’s yellow puppet Mr Oizo, but thankfully progresses into something much more palatable. ‘Zumm Zumm’ takes a repetitive rhythm and lyric in a surprisingly rewarding direction, and ‘Love’s Dart’ rides along on an insistent beat and finger-picked guitar rhythm that recalls Jose Gonzalez’s Veneer album. However, it is practically impossible to write piece about Django Django without mentioning The Beta Band. The comparisons made by critics are impossible to ignore, given both artists’ eclectic, genre-hopping approach to music, their Edinburgh heritage and the fact that drummer Dave McClean’s older brother John played keyboards in the folktronica pioneers. Indeed, the spectre of The Beta Band looms large over Django Django and their latest album, and whilst the association initially helped to raise their profile, in the long-term it could prove be more of a hindrance than a help. However Django Django are not merely a facsimile of their influential Scottish cousins. Whilst their influence is inescapable, Django Django’s songs are more danceable and club-ready than The Beta Band’s predominantly laidback and hazy songs ever were. The album is perhaps best enjoyed a few tracks at a time, as listening to its 13 tracks in one sitting may leave you feeling slightly overwhelmed. Of course, Django Django have a long way to go if they are going to reach the exalted level of the increasingly revered, and sorely missed Beta Band, and though their first album is a decent start to their recording career, it somewhat inevitably doesn’t hold up to the brilliance of the Three EPs or Hot Shots II, but then not much indie rock does, does it?
Matt Elliott- The Broken Man
The 2 Bears – Be Strong Joe Goddard’s original Hot Chip transcended the dance/indie barrier by having a ‘Shoreditch’ cool element to go with their incessantly catchy songs,
No, this is not the Matt Elliott who captained Leicester City to League Cup success in 1997 having a stab at a music career following retirement from the game (which would be pretty funny I know). Instead, it is a mysterious Bristolian of the same name who has produced an array of ethereal, morose folk and experimental, spacey rock using both his own moniker and the guise of Third Eye Foundation, having also played guitar in the band Flying Saucer Attack previously.
Blood Orange – Forget It
A few years ago Blood Orange frontman Dev Hyne was making entirely different music. The ex-singer/guitarist/synth-player of London based dance punk band Test Icicles left the group in 2006 to pursue a much more restrained genre of music under the name of Lightspeed Champion. After two consistently strong albums from the rockabilly band, the singer songwriter has now decided to once again switch genres. New single ‘Forget It’, taken from Blood Orange’s slyly released debut ‘Costal Grooves’ is a surfer-esc, summery-pop tune that is layered with teasing elctro-undertones, which allow the song to shuffle along at an easy pace. Hyne’s smooth vocals are intelligent and well executed, showing you just how diverse this talented young man can be. A fast and fuzzy guitar solo during the songs midway point feels slightly out of place, yet somehow works, blending in impressively with the records subtle mood and adding to its progression. Slipping into a steady ending with the tracks primary lyrics “I am not your savior”, the song fades out to a painful silence that leaves you itching to hear more. With a support slot for Florence and the Machine on her up-coming Australian and US tour, and an appearance at Field Day Festival in London, Blood Orange will soon become an artist who is on everyone’s lips.
Johan Reinhold - Shoot Me Down The Swedish music scene is currently exporting more artists than Volvo does cars. Little Dragon, Lykke Li, First Aid Kit, Kids and Tallest Man On Earth are just a few who will make Stockholm the place to head for this summer – not to mention death metal heroes Entombed. Johan Reinhold is one of the new bunch. This single sounds like it was written on a summer’s day while gazing upon its natural beauty of the flora and fauna of the country’s Koster Islands, which, funnily enough, it was. “Mayday, I’ve been shot down/I took a bullet to my heart” the track begins (so retro for one so young and bearded) while the former Swedish Grammy nominee Reinhold excretes a whiff of West Coast hair rock over wailing guitars and plaintiff vibes.

MUSIC NEWS South African native Nthato Mogkgata spent time early in his career fronting little known electro-rap bands Sweat.X and Playdoe, before his solo career under the name Spoek Mathambo really started to take off. Joining the roster of the increasingly urban conscious, indie rock haven Sub Pop (the Seattle based label that hosted Nirvana early in their career and then seemingly hundreds of influential indie bands after) Mathambo released a two song EP, Put Some Red On It last year, and is due to release his sophomore album, and debut full-length on the label, Father Creeper in March this year. ‘Let Them Talk’ is the first taste of their much anticipated album, and it’s an impressive starting point and good choice of single. ‘Talk’ is a heady fusion of South African rhythms, hip-hop, dub-step beats and rock ‘n’ roll that, despite the disparate sounds, somehow gels together quite brilliantly. The song boasts a memorable guitar riff and chorus that should ensure chart success, before descending into pure guitar noise and theatrics not unworthy of Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis. There is no doubt Mathambo has a much wider musical palette than the average rapper (he even lists Joy Division as a primary influence), and you can see him appealing to the indie rock kids who follow the Sub Pop roster with songs like this. Like his label-mate Shabazz Palaces, Spoek Mathambo has a very promising career ahead of him.
Mode, The Killers and Kings of Leon, and last year’s ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming’ seems like a fitting culmination of Gonzalez’s musical trajectory thus far; it’s huge, infectious and weaved with the sort of drama suited to being viewed on huge platforms. The second single to be released from Hurry Up, ‘Reunion’ is undeniably one of M83’s most sonically expansive works, the problem however may be that it’s a little too dense. With ‘Reunion,’ Gonzalez eschews subtlety; everything is big, widescreen, and one gets the feeling that such an effort has been made to expand the track’s sonic dimensions that it almost finds itself falling flat emotionally. A tad too concerned with pandering to hooks, ‘Reunion’ feels gimmicky in its 80s’ pop influence; its chants of fist-pumping macho-bravado sounding pre-designed for their next notable support slot. It ultimately finds itself lacking the moments of microcosmic beauty that made much of M83’s earlier output so wonderful. Perhaps Gonzalez was right when he chose an album title beginning with the phrase “hurry up,” particularly when it comes to ‘Reunion,’ it all feels a little rushed, all too keen to offer a quick fix rather than take a good, long look at itself to assess its own worth.
Jason Byrne
Having electronically moved things up a notch since that industry nod in ’09, Reinhold brings a slow and longing rockiness as a backdrop to a sticky, choral hookline, whilst backed by a lush, deep shagpile carpet of piano, snare, vox and echo. Keeping up the end for Scandies everywhere, he does use the words “cock” and “shoot”, although purely in the gun-toting sense you understand. He’s also apparently being circled by Sony. So, if you do end up hanging out with the elegantly wasted in SoFo for those famous short summers where everyone goes a little bit mad and “there’s a good chance of getting laid”, according to Lykke Li, this just could well be your perfect soundtrack.
Lapalux – Moments There’s no doubting that Lapalux’s particular brand of IDM beat-making is very much in vogue right now. Post-dubstep, future garage, glitch hop; across the UK, numerous producers are currently trading in chopped and skewed beats, warped yet soulful vocals, and synth sounds awash with retro charm. All of the above being present in droves on ‘Moments.’
Zombie Zombie - The Beach ‘The Beach’ is perhaps best described as a zombified cover of the New Order classic as sung by a husky voiced Russian seductress in English. The song was recorded by the little known French indie-electronic duo Zombie Zombie as part of a celebration of New Order’s seminal classic Power, Corruption and Lies (which was released 29 years ago and will likely be remastered or re-released for its 30th birthday next year) for Mojo Music Magazine. It may be bewildering to those who have only ever heard ‘Blue Monday’ as to why it has been labelled as ‘The Beach’, given that both lyrically and musically, that appears to be exactly what it is. The title ‘The Beach’ comes from the B-side to the original single version (which is basically an extended instrumental), and a song that also appeared on the aforementioned Power, Corruption and Lies. Musically, as you might expect, it is not a patch on either of the original songs, or indeed, many of the other remixes (of which the ’88 remix remains the best).
Guest vocalist Py brings a delicate, haunting quality to the track’s intro, sounding utterly siren-like as she whispers “I keep moments of you trapped in film” against a serene background of glitch beats and patchwork xylophones. It’s a fairly slow-building exercise as more and more samples and rhythms gradually come to prominence, however somewhere down the line things start to feel a tad pandemonic.
Steve Bug – Gunslingers & Greenhorns
As multiple sampled beats begin to cross over in polyrhythmic ways that most African drumming troupes wouldn’t have the gall to attempt, the heart of the track gets a little lost. For every soulful and wonderfully manipulated vocal line, there’s a misplaced 2-step beat or glaringly out-of-place synth blast. It all ends up detracting from its core; a beautiful vocal outing from Py that sits somewhere between modern urban isolation and recalling a former halcyon existence.
This month marks the return of Berlin-based label Poker Flat, with their ninth compilation album, Gunslingers & Greenhorns. The two-disc release will offer both new and old material from Poker Flat’s label roster, with the first CD home to 10 fresh, unmixed tracks, including exclusives from newcomers Tom Taylor and Gareth Whitehead as well as Alland Byallo’s ‘One of the Ones’. It’s a strong selection from some of the finest in the business, as gunslingers like Steve Bug, Nick Harris and Ian Pooley meet greenhorns like Daniel Dexter, James What and many more, to take you on a whistle stop tour deep into the Wild West of modern house and techno.
With some of the IDM weirdness reined in, there’s potential for some real beauty here; as it stands though, it looks like it’ll be 2-step forward for Lapadux, one step back.
Featuring producers like Adultnapper, Roland Appel, Steve Bug & Clé, Nick Harris, Sebastian San and Ribn, there‘s more than enough quality to choose from. CD 2 is a mix from the Poker Flat sheriff himself, Steve Bug. Growing up in Germany’s techno and acid-house heyday, his love for a perfect groove is as apparent now as it was back then. The Bug takes us on a real trek across scenic landscapes and rocky terrain as he mixes together 16 tracks including a further six new exclusives.
Nevertheless, ‘The Beach’ or ‘Blue Monday’ (or whatever you want to bloody call it) is such a classic song with a foot tapping melody and surprisingly hummable chorus (given its sombre subject matter of rejection) that is possible to enjoy almost all the versions of the song that have been made of it, including this one.
To celebrate this huge release, a very special Poker Flat showcase has been announced to take part in London for the very first time. The exclusive release party will be held at a secret warehouse, where Steve Bug will be joined by a range of acts including Ovum chief Josh Wink and 2011 star M A N I K.
An interesting experiment, but not one that will make much of an impact outside of New Order fanatics or fans of the duo.

INTERVIEWS:
DJ Fresh His No. 1 track “Louder” provided the soundtrack to our summer (and Lucozade) and his 2011 ended on a high after a huge UK sell-out tour. This year, with a new single already en route to No. 1, Dan Stein AKA DJ Fresh, has even bigger plans, with an album release and another tour ready to go. BBM’s Alexandra MacLeod caught up with the man himself to find out how it’s all been going. You’re new single with Rita Ora is a contender for Number 1 this week, things must be mental for you right now? Yes I know! I can’t tell you how grateful I am, how amazed I am about what’s going on right now with my music, and with bass music as a whole. You’ve been recognised repeatedly for your contribution to the drum n‘ bass music genre, what was going on when you first started producing bass tracks? It was really different to how it is now, it was much more urban, much more street. I came from Reading and had a relatively privileged background, and it was funny because I had a rather posh accent so everyone was a bit like “who is this kid, and what does he want to do this for?” It was really cool though, I met people who had the most amazing perspective on life, and on music. In drum n’ bass music there was this kind of family, and when you’re welcomed into it, it’s great, and there are always going to be these people that I respect and who I’m influenced by. Where did you draw inspiration from? Originally I was into indie, but I liked classical music and jazz up until I was about 12-13 years-old, I never liked pop music. Then I heard people like Jean Michel Jarre, which introduced me to electro, it was like classical music to me in a way, I loved how you had complete control over the sound. Then I heard hardcore when I was at school, the older kids would go out to raves and bring this stuff back, and I was just blown away by it. Your sound has changed quite a lot since you were part of Bad Company, what made you go solo? Well, a lot of the Bad Company stuff near the end was stuff that I was making pretty much on my own, and I think the guys felt, understandably, that the sound of Bad Company was supposed to be the sound of all of us, and it was increasingly becoming about me. So I said to them, “what if I call myself Fresh, and when we do stuff together I’ll use a separate name?” They felt that wasn’t really what they wanted, so I didn’t really have much of choice, I started out doing my own thing which was quite scary.
Freestylers Legendary UK dance collective Freestylers, first started life back in 1996 when DJ/producers Matt Castor, Aston Harvey and Andrew Galea decided to join forces. Working with just about everyone, from Pendulum to Beenie Man, the Freestylers have cemented their place as true pioneers of the scene. With a career spanning hits over several decades, including a huge legacy of albums and compilations under their belt as well as a thunderous eleven piece live act. The Freestylers have been educating the masses all over the world with their innovative slant on breakbeat and drum step for a long, long time. BBM managed to speak to main-man Aston, who put aside his busy schedule to talk to us about their new album, the future of the breakbeat scene and destroying rubber ducks in blenders… Hi guys, how you doing? All going well thank you! What have you been up to lately? We’ve been busy working on our new artist album, a new DJ mix compilation, and have been playing gigs here and there, so we’ve been fairly busy. With your new single, ‘Over You’ feat Ami Carmine, you’ve moved away from your signature reggae/dub sound. What prompted this? We’ve always tried new styles and concepts as Freestylers. Our musical tastes are pretty eclectic, so we like to change things up once in a while. When are we hearing the new album? What’s it like? Again, it’s a pretty eclectic mix of dance music styles. If anything we’ve done a few tracks that have a more housey feel to them this time. There’s also some dubstep elements thrown in there, but it’s still quite unique to us. We’ve been working with lots of different up and coming singers and rappers too so some fresh vibes in there! Who came up with the ‘rubber ducks in a blender’ idea for the video? Some crazy Dutch guys! The label we’re signed to ‘Rub a Duck’ is based in Holland, so we got them to come up with something mad and fun. What do you think of the breakbeat scene at the moment? It’s definitely not as big as it was, but it’s still holding its own. I think it’s looking like there will be a resurgence soon. There’s a new sound known as 140M Breaks which a lot of the dubstep guys are getting into as they can easily mix the tracks into their sets as the tempos are the same as the dubstep tracks. Do you think it has had its day or is it still evolving? It’s still evolving. All types of bass music evolves which is the great thing about it. The music is always being pushed so it’s always fresh.
Who are you listening to right now? Any hot tips? Breakswise there’s these wicked guys called Pyramid and also Wizard. Lot’s of Good drum and bass around with Tantrum Desire, Break and Delta Heavy to name a few. Also we’re feeling Doctor P, Flux Pavilion, Emalkay on a dubstep tip. Tell us about your live band project – how did that come about & who is involved? It’s not a live band project, it’s just a live band. We’ve been touring with a live band since we started doing Freestylers. It was the suggestion of the record company we were signed to when we made our first album. We’ve had a bit of a hiatus the past couple of years, but once we’ve finished the album I hop to be back on the road in full effect. Any chance we’ll be seeing that show in Aus anytime soon? I hope so. We toured The Big Day Our in 2005, and also in 2006/2007 we did a live band tour which were both great. Who’s the most interesting person/band you’ve ever worked with? Rob from Pendulum, Lenny Kravitz and the rapper Ice T. Strange combo I know! What, if anything, do you guys still want to achieve with your music? To win a Grammy or an Aria and go triple Platinum in Bolivia. What have you guys got planned for this tour? Lots of good party tunes. We’ve got lots of our new music to play, plus lots of exclusives from various artists we like. We DJ on 4 CD players. Matt drops the beats and I mix and scratch accapellas and effects over the top. I get to be creative whilst doing this and every set is unique and quite unplanned. That’s what makes them special. What’s the most interesting thing (rumour, headline etc) you’ve ever heard about yourselves? Can’t think of anything really. We’re not famous enough, so nobody gives a shit what we get up to. Lol. If you could change your careers for anything else, what would it be? I’d either be an airline pilot or a porn star, and Matt would be a professional angler. Thanks for your time and look forward to seeing you out in Oz soon.

Well it worked out for the best, you’re doing pretty well for yourself! How did the collaboration with Rita Ora come about? Well Jessie J’s management wanted me to try and produce something for her, so they put me in the studio with these guys called The Invisible Men, who produce for her. We never ended up doing anything for Jessie, but we just sort of hit it off really, and started working on a couple of tracks, and ‘Hot Right Now’ at that point was literally just the backing track and the main hook. I couldn’t find the right person to sing it, and I tried a whole load of different people, but it was so fast and so highpitched that people couldn’t really do it, and the guys said to me, “we know this girl Rita Ora, she’s kind of locked down to Roc Nation, we’re not really supposed to talk about her but she’s coming in tomorrow, and we know she’s going to be able to nail it.” They showed me her a video on YouTube and I knew straight away that she was the girl, because she just had this incredible energy and vibe, and she came in to record it the next day. Jay-Z signed it off, so we got permission. Apparently he really loved the track! You’ve done a few collaborations with female vocalists now, what is it you like about working with them? Well to be honest I’ve always written songs, you know since I was a tiny kid, the only thing I was ever good at in school was music and creative writing, I used to sit down at the piano and write songs, and that’s what I used to do every day. The past 10 years I’ve kind of ignored that, just because drum n’ bass was so anti-vocal to that point, but now everything’s changed recently and its all opened up, and it’s become the right time for me to write songs. Your concept show FRESH/LIVE was a sell out last year, are you planning anything similar this year? Yeah we’re doing another tour in the UK in May, and we’ll be doing most of the UK festivals and some European festivals, and hopefully I’d love to get it out of the UK more but it’s really expensive to put on those kinds of shows, hopefully next year we’ll be able to go out to America and Australia, which will be really cool. Are there any new music producer’s/artists that your supporting or listening to right now? There’s a guy called SongBoy that I think is going to be massive soon – he’s a dubstep producer - and I’ve been a massive supporter of Flux Pavilion since the early days and he’s about to drop an album, which I’m sure is going to catapult in to god knows what, he is a really talented guy. But recently I’ve been so busy with my album I haven’t heard much outside of the studio! An album! When’s that due for release? I think we’re looking at September time. I am really excited about finishing it and getting it out there, and well it leading onto the next sounds, I’ve always been hooked on to change. INTERVIEWS: The 2 Bears Since their formation in 2009, the ‘The 2 Bears’ a.k.a Hot Chip’s own Joe Goddard and DJ Raf Rundell have been steadily gaining prominence, with the release of 3 E.P’s of club-thumping, speaker straining house music with a twist. With an army of UK national radio support from some of the countries biggest DJ’s, a built-in fan base and a Bear hug or two, 2012 is looking like it’s going to be theirs for the taking. To celebrate the release of their debut album, BBM’s own James Stapleton talks to Raf Rundell, one half of the dynamic DJ duo, about their new album, table tennis and why wearing Bear suits aren’t quite as comfortable as they sound…. A warm welcome from BBM, how are you? I’m good thanks, how are you? (BBM is always well, thanks). I’m just currently working on something with (fellow DJ) Toddla T. So, a bit of background if you please, how did you and Joe get together? We DJ’d together first of all at a lot of these Greco-Roman warehouse parties in London that a mutual friend of ours put on. Hot Chip seemed to be playing 3 times a week in their first year and I used to go see them as well. What was the inspiration behind the 2 Bears concept? A friend of ours had a fevered vision of a band called the ‘3 Bears’ and envisaged Joe and I and a friend of ours Joseph (Mount) from Metronomy together. Joseph wasn’t living in London as he had moved back down south to make his most recent record so 3 became 2, and the name just stuck really! It was just meant to be a bit of fun as we both were working on other things but yeah it all came together naturally. So are you enjoying wearing bear costumes? Not at all, they are horrible! Quite good on a day like today if you are hanging round on the sofa, but not for DJ’ing. We mainly use them for photo shoots; you know it’s a gimmick, anything to avoid looking like two lumpy guys from the studio! You’ve been described as pop-hip-house, liquid-bmore-house-step and rave-garage but how would you yourself describe your sound? I’d say London flavoured house music. Everything that we’ve grown up with really. We really love the album, what’s the response been like? Surprising. Yeah, you just kind get on with things in the studio and hope that people will like it. I couldn’t be happier. How did you find taking vocal duties on some of the album tracks? It was a lot of fun; it’s not something I ever envisaged. We did the BBC Radio One roadshow in Ibiza, and I never thought I’d end up being a rapper on stage in Ibiza in front of people going crazy with their shirts off, it was nuts. Quite a surreal moment really, I originally did them as guide vocals, but people encouraged us and we decided that this would be it. The album cover has a certain distinctive coat of arms, have you got a band motto, Latin or otherwise to go with it? Haha – ‘Best Eaten Fresh.’ I noticed a pair of 2 Bear ping-pong bats for sale on the facebook page, is that a passion of yours? Yeah we play a lot of ping-pong, he’s got a table in his back garden. Every time we’d hit a creative wall, we’d go take our mind off and play ping-pong for half an hour. Usually the answer is there when you come back from the table. Is there a healthy rivalry? Who normally wins? Yeah, well…I wouldn’t like to comment in print, he might get upset with me. So what’s in store for you guys this year? Obviously you’re headed out to France and Germany soon, but any plans to head out to the U.S or Australia? We are doing Paris and Berlin in the next week or two, lots going on. And obviously Hot Chip are on the road soon, doing all the festivals and it looks like Joe and I are going to dovetail nicely with Hot Chip at various events. We’ve also been busy remixing; we’re working on Wiley and have just done Santagold. The Bears played on the Stereosonic Australia tour, which was great and I would love to try and get back there. Hot Chip will be going over there to do the Big Day Out this year. Who are you listening to at the moment? I really like the Stepkids a lot, they are a sort of American psychedelic soul, I like ‘Storm Queen’ that Walker Giest has been making and all the new innercity remixes, I’ve been playing Kenny Larkin’s innercity remix a lot. If you could collaborate with anyone at the moment who would you choose? Well it has to be Andre 3000, he would be an amazing person to work with and full of ideas. What’s been the most random moment in the history of the 2 Bears so far? Being told that Paul McCartney was into the Bear Hug, that was pretty random and gob smacking, crikey yeah. Macca Endorsed. BBM thanks you. The 2 Bears album ‘Be Strong’ is out now.

INTERVIEWS: Yeah it’s been really fun. It’s a nice festival and it’s nice to be travelling with the band. You know, we get to hang out a little bit and get a feel for the place. I’m enjoying it. What’s the reception been like? Do the Aussie’s like the music? Yeah I think so - it’s been going well. Musically, what you’re doing right now is so different. Where does it come from? I don’t know really. I just wanted to make music that I felt was passionate and just emotional. I see music very emotionally, so I just wanted to create almost a sense of pure music. Like it’s fun, but it’s telling a story, not just in the lyrics. I just wasn’t that worried if it was similar to other fashions or trends or in music.
Anna calvi Anna Calvi is currently one of the UK’s newest and shiniest golden girl’s. Her sound is dark, sultry and emotional and her look a seductive cross between that flamenco dancer in Mission Impossible and the guitar-playing vixens in Robert Palmer’s ‘Addicted to Love’ video. Following the release of her selftitled album last year, Calvi was showered with praise by everyone from NME to the music legend that is Brian Eno. Hot off the back of a string of first-time gigs Down-under, Anna linked up with BBM for a late night phone call from a very snowy London to fill us in on what’s been going on and why she’s doing what she’s doing. Hi Anna, how’s Australia? I bet it’s nice swapping snow for sunshine? Yeah, it’s great - nice to be warm, finally. Are you a bit gutted to miss the snow? I am a little bit; yeah I’m a bit jealous, but I think I go for summer – I’m not a winter girl. I’m with you there! So what’s it been like playing over in Australia? You got some pretty rave reviews for your gig at Laneway.
Your voice and stage persona remind us of artists like Annie Lennox and Grace Jones. Is it important to you to be seen as a strong woman? I suppose being strong in the music is important. I mean, a feeling of fearlessness, in some way. And in terms of the way that I dress, I just wanted to express the passion in the music, which is why I dress in a way that’s influenced and inspired by flamenco outfits. How did it feel to be picked out by Brian Eno as ‘the biggest thing since Patti Smith’ last year? Yeah, that was err, [laughs] yeah… I mean, it’s been really amazing to have Brian’s support. It really means a lot to me and I feel very lucky and incredibly grateful. He’s been so sweet to me and he’s just such an incredible artist so it’s a really big deal to have his support. Definitely, he’s one of my favourites! What’s he like as a mentor? You can definitely hear a bit of his influence on the album. Well, he gave me some advice in terms of my arrangements and some of the mixes for the album. He’s just a very interesting guy to talk to, you know, he’s very intelligent and charismatic and really fun to hang out with. Any chance you’ll cover any of his tracks? I’m keeping my fingers crossed for ‘Baby’s on Fire.’ [laughs] Well you never know, possibly. Do you feel like there’s a lot of pressure to live up to with your next album considering the hype your first one generated? I don’t feel the pressure, no. I feel that I want to do the best that I can for myself and not really for other people. I mean, I want other people to like it, but I need to like it myself first to be able to believe in it. I just want to do the best that I can. How long until we see it? Will you be trying anything new? I’m writing at the moment and when I get back from Australia I’ll be focusing on writing and recording. I think it’s definitely important as a musician to continue exploring new ideas, so it will be different for my next album. But it’s too early for me to say, or to give anything away…
What’s been the most formative experience of your musical life so far? There have been lots of things along the way. I started playing the guitar when I was about eight and so when I first heard Jimi Hendrix that was a big eye opener. And the first time I heard Edith Piaff sing, that was a really big moment for me as a singer. Just to hear someone be so emotive, raw and expressive in their voice, and so fearless – that was really important for me on my journey to becoming a singer. Do you remember which Hendrix track it was? I think it was ‘Voodoo Chile’, which is the slower one with the big build up. Yeah, I love that one; number two on Electric Ladyland if I recall… Are their any current artists exciting you at the moment? Yeah, I think it’s a really interesting time for music at the moment. For me personally I really like Wild Beasts and Anthony and The Johnsons. I think there’s a lot of good music at the moment. How about dance music? Would we catch you at a rave? [laughs] Erm, it’s not really my preferred type of thing… Certain tracks I’d be into, but as a genre no, there’s other stuff I’d be more into. I’m not a raver. Who would you most like to collaborate with? I’d like to sing with Scott Walker - that would be really fun. Why? I think he’s a really amazing songwriter and I love his voice, he’s got a really great tone and, you know, he’s great. So, how do you chill out when you’re not shaking up the music world? I stay in bed for as long as possible! Then, you know, I see some friends, go and see a film, something like that. Just quite relaxed. What’s your favourite music video of all time? Oh wow, erm… ‘Borderline’ by Madonnna. Really? I reckon ‘Papa don’t Preach’ is better. Oh yeah, that’s a great one! Oh, I don’t know now – maybe that one. But her hair’s better in Borderline and she’s wearing a great pencil skirt. And she’s wearing yellow shoes, which really shouldn’t work, but it does. How about your favourite Disney character? [laughs] Mmm… That’s tough! I think I’ll go with the tiger in the Jungle Book. Shere Khan? Yeah, that one. Why? I’ll leave that as a mystery. Fair enough! Well thanks for speaking to us today Anna. Enjoy Australia! By Rebecca Jones

That’s where it came on I did this stunt with a guy’s legs on stage, which is a very visual thing, so from, so I can keep me jacket and me old hat, haha. FUNNY NEWS Money’s Too Tight To Mention
Every pub in Britain has one. The old bloke in the corner who smells of stale wee, wears the same stained cardigan every day and inspires ‘secret murderer’ stories among the local primary school kids. BBM had no trouble spotting him in our town, he was our dad. In Huddersfield, one such man was Gordon Hewitt, who was known by locals as being a tight-arse bastard who looked like a disgusting tramp in his trademark duffel coat, ill-fitting trousers and canvas pumps, as he sold newspapers on the streets. Former neighbours told how he used to save money by reading the paper in his Reliant Robin so he didn’t have to turn on the light in his house, and wore his clothes wet rather than using his tumble dryer. Quite rightly, the locals regularly took the piss. When he died last year, no one batted an eyelid. Until now. Turns out Hewitt’s penny pinching had seen him rack up a whopping £250,000 fortune, and he’s handed it out to anyone who was nice to him even people he barely knew.
Too Wood To Be True
We love The Jungle Book here at BBM, dancing monkeys, Baloo the Bear, that scene where the woman gets shagged by a baboon. Ok that last one might have been on YouPorn, but it’s all harmless Disney fun. So back in September, we were delighted to hear the tale of the mysterious “Forest Boy” of Berlin, who claimed he had been raised in the woods and had only now sought out civilization following the tragic death of his beloved father. His story captured the imagination of Germans everywhere (no mean feat considering Germans have no imagination) and his amazing tale hit headlines across the world. Speaking in broken English, Forest Boy said he had been living in a tent in a forest for five years with his father, Ryan, and that his mother Doreen had died in a car crash five years previously.
“I couldn’t believe it, I thought it was a mistake,” said one woman who was handed £1000. “I danced with him at a club on a Sunday night. Other people would take the mickey out of him, which I didn’t like. He would turn up at the dance in his duffel coat and trousers, which were too short. I didn’t know about his money - he must have lived very frugally.” Another woman, in her 50s, had chatted to Gordon in the street near his home on a few dozen occasions. “He hinted at a will but I thought he was talking rubbish. I was gobsmacked,” she said while dancing on his grave.
Sadly, the fantasy and the reality proved tragically different for a 15-year-old German girl last month - when she flicked on a documentary about swingers and saw her mum wearing stockings and suspenders while in a cage. Worse still, her dad was there too, dressed up as Batman with a dildo in his hand.
“I understand your feelings and I would not like to be in your shoes,” said the chairman of the 9th Regional Court in Munich, presumably while wetting himself with laughter. He turned down their claim for a large amount of compensation because he pointed out that they had gone voluntarily to the club and knew they were being filmed.
Unfortunately, last month, it was revealed he was a fucking lunatic who made the whole thing up.
No sign of a grave has been found in cursory searches of forests in the Harz Mountains either, and Ray was unable to pinpoint the forest where he said he lived. He was well also well-dressed and clean. Until that last point, the authorities thought Ray might have been Zach Galfanakis.
Imagine if you were a kid and you discovered, by accident, that your dad was Batman and your mum’s a TV star. Sounds awesome right?
Poor girl. She must have been so ashamed to find out her parents weren’t into shit-eating porn like most other German couples. The swinging couple in question promptly tried to sue broadcasting company RTL for massive damages, claiming emotional upset for their scarred-for-life daughter. But the court rejected their claim and awarded them just £160 each in damages - barely enough for the week’s lubricant bills.
He said that his father died suddenly in the woods and he had buried him in a shallow grave. With nowhere else to turn, he began walking towards Berlin, eventually arriving at the town hall and declaring. ‘I’m all alone, please help me’. Bless.
To be fair, suspicions should have been aroused when, instead of calling himself Mowgli, Thandiwe or Tarzan, he introduced himself as Ray. More eyebrows were raised when a police check found that no one by the name of Doreen had died in a car crash in the past decade.

The couple argued that they thought their features would be pixelated out. The production company admitted it had made this pledge to participants but said it had ‘simply forgotten’ to do so – a bit like when BBM promises not to get jizz in a girl’s hair when they allow us to ‘pixelate’ their face.

FUNNY NEWS A Shower Of Swearing
We all love it when a TV presenter accidentally says a rude word when introducing someone. Derek Hunt, for example, is a pretty tricky name to pronounce. As is Leona Fuckface. But really, how hard can it be for a weatherman to say the word ‘sunshine’ without turning the air blue? Well if you’re name’s Alan Deakin, very hard indeed.
Young Lads Arson About
Locals in Devon were celebrating last month after a young boy from Plymouth managed to get himself in the British record books. The plucky 10-year-old officially became one of the UK’s youngest ever criminals after admitting his involvement in an arson attack.
Bleepin’ Deakin was supposed to predict ‘bucket loads of sunshine’ during a weather report last month. But instead, he said ‘bucket loads of c*nts’. No, we’re not sure how you get from there to there either.
His record-breaking attempt to set fire to a chapel on a college campus cost an estimated £115,000 to repair. It was worth it though as he and two young pals were sentenced at Plymouth Youth Court, presumably to the delight of proud Plymouth locals and the Devon criminal fraternity who’s youth training program has been held up as an example to crime syndicates across the country.
Asked by a Twitter follower what he had said, he admitted: “Not A naughty word, THE naughty word.” If that’s what he comes out with when it’s sunny imagine the Tourettes-laden tirade he’ll come out with when it’s pissing it down.
The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, barely came up to his solicitor’s shoulders as he told the court he was “sorry for what I have done”. Well done lad.
Naked Hunt had narrowly avoided colliding with other pedestrians and smashed into six or seven vehicles at an intersection in Beaufort, SC, on the southeast coast of the state. Hunt, from Sumter in the centre of the state, had to be freed from the wreckage by rescue workers, after which he started attacking police officers who arrived at the scene shortly after, said deputy police chief Dale McDorman. Hunt was then taken in to Beaufort Memorial Hospital for treatment for minor injuries, and has yet to be charged for the death of Miller, who was walking with his brother at the time the fire engine struck and killed him. It is as yet unknown why Hunt stole the vehicle, why he was naked or whether he was intoxicated, but we’re guessing his actions were merely an interpretive display for the terms being ‘stark bollock naked’ and ‘stark raving mad.’
Setting The Benchmark
The Chinese may hold the future of the world in their hands, but it’s what they’re gripping with their teeth that’s making headlines at the moment. A Chinese daredevil/knobjockey has just broken the world record for balancing wooden benches on his teeth. Don’t ask.
GOSSIP
Thirty-year-old Li Hongxiao managed to balance a total of 23 benches on his teeth for 11 seconds – which, coincidentally, is just long enough to say the words “what the fuck is this idiot doing?” three times.
Adele Flies The Flag For Chubby Chasers
With each bench one metre long, 45 centimetres high and weighing in at 3kg, the combined weight stood at a whopping 69kg - almost as much as his 75kg body weight. Apparently the nutjob has been practising balancing shit in his mouth since he was 11-years-old. Funny, we figured he practised by doing bench presses. Buddum tsh!
Duff Beer Goes On Sale In The UK
The iconic Duff beer that has been synonymous with The Simpsons for over 23 years is now available to buy in the UK. The 4.7 per cent lager can now be bought online in bottles or cans and has been released to coincide with the 500th episode airing of The Simpsons. Different versions of the beer have been available in Mexico, Australia and New Zealand for the last two decades but now, as if the British public needed any more encouragement to act like Homer and Barny, Duff is here to please all lager louting palettes.
Naked Man Steals Fire Engine
A naked man stole a fire engine before speeding off and killing a pedestrian who was walking on the pavement. In scenes reminiscent of the popular computer game Grand Theft Auto, 26-year-old Kalvin Hunt took the unattended emergency vehicle from an apartment complex in South Carolina before driving about two miles at high speed and ploughing into and killing pedestrian Justin Miller, 28. The fire engine driven by Hunt then careered completely off the road, crashing into some trees before coming to a complete stop.

Ok, we know we’re probably a bit too partial to an Adele fat joke here at BBM Towers, but we promise to just get it down to one a week from now on. A former America’s Next Top Model contestant has launched her own dating site for “curvy girls” a.k.a. chubby girls who can’t get a date, and has apparently offered Adele £1 million to be the face of the company. Adele has previously admitted to using online dating websites to help her in her quest for love. That is, until she lost a bit of weight, won a load of awards and all of a sudden bagged herself a man. So basically, we think it’d be false advertising if Adele took the job, as the moral of the story is, if you’re less fat people will want to shag you.
Brad & Ange Spoil Kids
We’re quite glad that it is emerged that Brad and Angelina are going to build a Neverland style theme park at their chateaux in the South of France, as it totally goes against the “we’re so normal and earthy and don’t need luxuries” bollocks that they’re always feeding us. Apparently the couple felt bad when they had to leave Lego Land early due to a security alert from their body guards, so instead of perhaps hiring the theme park for a day, or asking to go out of hours, they’re going to build a whole theme park for their six kids. Makes total sense to us. Oh no, hang on, they’re still putting their annoyingly ethical stamp on it, it’s going to be solar powered. Hippy knobs.

SPORT the Emirates in recent seasons. Unfortunately for Wenger, that would mean ditching his usual tactic of raiding the Southampton youth academy. “We have what it takes at the club when everybody is available because we had many missing and big, big players, too,” Wenger said. “Wilshere has played zero games, Diaby has played zero games and [Per] Mertesacker is out for the rest of the season. Santos is out for three months … at the moment I believe we are not making plans for next season. We are making plans for the next game.” In other words, Wenger’s already eyeing up eight years without silverware.
Name That Toon
Imagine that you’re poor old gran has just passed away and you go to her grave. Only when you get there, instead of her name engraved on the headstone, there’s an advert for Bing Lee. Or, worse, a photo of Shane Warne looking very pleased with his latest treatment from Advance Hair Studio. Or Betty White eating a Snickers. If you’re anything like BBM, you’d be jizzing with rage - which is exactly how Newcastle United fans felt when they found out the large sign at their home ground which said ‘St James Park’ had finally been torn down to make way for the stadium’s new ‘official’ name, the ‘Sports Direct Arena.’ So when Michael Atkinson spotted the desecration on his daily walk to the Brown Ale store, he did what any other true-blooded Geordiemen would do – he spray-painted the old name back on. The graffiti was cleaned off a few hours later, but not before a viral photo of Atkinson’s artwork had been circulated on Facebook. “I was having a laugh with me mates on Facebook and decided to paint ‘St James’ on the wall,” he said.”I had just done the ‘St James’ and was just about to do the apostrophe when I saw the blue lights flashing so obviously I had to quit. The police were Ok when they arrested me but obviously they cannot condone it.” The rest of the football world has been shocked by Atkinson’s criminal actions, as Geordies have never previously displayed any knowledge or interest in punctuation. Atkinson said the name change from St James’ Park “wound him up.” “The ground has always been ‘St James’ Park’ and should always be ‘St James’,” he blathered. It is thought to be the first illegal use of paint in the Newcastle area since the infamous ‘Byker Grove blinding’ of PJ out of PJ and Duncan in the mid 90s.
Del Piero’s Wake-Up Call
After winning the World Cup in 2006, the Italian national team were heralded as returning messiahs by their arse-pinching, cappucino-breathed brethren. The players names were chanted in awe up and down the streets of Rome, Naples, Milan and Placido da Domingo. But Alessandro del Piero took his status as sporting deity to a new level last month when he used his messianic status to cure a girl of a brain hemorrhage. Italian schoolgirl Giada Scalise, 12, suffered a brain hemorrhage on January 22nd while watching her beloved Juventus on TV at her home in the southern city of Crotone. She lapsed into a coma, and after several weeks of making no progress her parents got in touch with the prolific striker to ask for his help. Del Piero happily obliged by sending a recorded message, which was played repeatedly at Giada’s bedside: “Hello Giada, this is Alessandro del Piero. I hope you’ll wake up and come back to us as soon as possible to watch many of our games.” Usually, the prospect of watching the traditional Italian game, which consists of defenders casually passing it between each other on the edge of their own box for 90 minutes, would be enough to put any football fan in a coma. But, amazingly, it worked. Within days Giada began to stir, and she was soon speaking again and even demanding ice cream (presumably a cornetto) to help her recuperation. Her dad, Francesco, is convinced that the star’s intervention was the key to his daughter regaining consciousness. All hail Del Piero – the king of kings! Of course, an ability to cure and heal isn’t the only thing Del Piero has in common with our Lord Jesus. He’s also good on the end of crosses. Arf!
Gunner Be Another Bad Year
They said it couldn’t be done. When Arsene Wenger outlined his secret plan to not win a fucking thing over seven years, but still not get sacked by the Arsenal hierarchy, he was dismissed as a lunatic. Yet here we are, seven years later, applauding a truly stella effort from the Frenchman. Not only has he done it, he’s done it in record time - effectively making sure in February that Arsenal fans would have absolutely nothing to get excited about for the next couple of months following defeats in the Champions League and FA Cup. “Our main target now is to focus on the championship,” Wenger whimpered. “People are always asking the same question, but the first trophy is to finish in the top four. That is vital for us. Let’s win our next home game and we will be fine. The feeble Frenchman is under contract at the Emirates until 2014 but is feeling the pressure as Gunners fans start to question what the hell he’s playing at. With Robin van Persie single-handedly keeping their top four hopes afloat, nailing down the Dutchman’s next contract seems essential if Arsenal want to become a force in the title race again. They also need to buy proven top-class players to replace the cavalcade of stars who’ve left
Brazilian striker Michel Platini (not that one) was playing for CSKA Sofia in a friendly against Dinamo Bucharest when he was fouled by Laurentiu Rus. He immediately reacted by twatting Rus, then started wading into random Bucharest players, sparking an all-in brawl. When the dust finally settled, both Rus and Platini were sent off. And that was that. Or so it seemed. Watching impassively from the sidelines was the Dinamo coach, who couldn’t help but admire the way Platini maimed, gouged and uppercutted his way through his team. In fact, he was so impressed that he signed him immediately after the game. Of course, the only snag was Platini had just made himself enemy No.1 among his new teammates. Platini travelled back to Romania with his new team but club officials kept his presence a secret from the rest of the squad as a precautionary measure. “It’s normal for him to be apprehensive about travelling with the team - he was alone and there were 20 of us,” Dinamo striker Marius Niculae told local media. “It’s something between us and we’ll settle this in the dressing room.” Well done Marius, we’re sure that vaguely threatening ominous statement will settle his nerves.
Getting Shirty On The Pitch
BBM has seen some legendary players in action during our time on the terraces: Gennaro Gattuso, Ronaldinho, Eric Cantona, Carlton Palmer. All the greats. And if one of those players ever gave us their shirt after a game, only for another star-struck fan to try and snatch it off us, we’d probably put up a bit of a scrap. That’s exactly what happened during Barca’s 3-1 champions League first leg win over Bayer Leverkusen last month, when two fans went at each other for the glorious prize of Lionel Messi’s shirt. The only problem was, they were both Bayer Leverkusen players. Levekusen defender Michal Kadlec was keen to get his hands on the threetime Ballon d’Or winner’s shirt at half-time, but a row broke out as teammate Manuel Friedrich claimed it for himself. Kadlec, who scored the Germans’ only goal, eventually got the souvenir at full time, but Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller felt that the players’ eagerness to get a Messi memento did not exactly portray the right image to fans who had just seen the team get walloped in their own stadium. “I can guarantee that Kadlec and Friedrich will auction off their Messi shirts for a good cause. What the pair did was a bit over the top,” the poodle-permed former Germany forward said. Kadlec insisted that his desire to get Messi’s shirt did not distract him from his duties on the field, telling Sky: “When you play against such a player, then you always want his shirt. I would have swapped it immediately for a better result, but it is a shame that we did not do enough.” So essentially, it’s the millionaire version of collecting a Panini football sticker album.
Villa’s Flying Winger
Last season, when Newcastle still had lumbering thug Andy Carroll playing up front, it would have made perfect sense for Aston Villa to make a new signing who was good in the air in a bid to combat the aerial threat offered by the Magpies. Sadly, Carroll is now stinking up Liverpool’s strike force - which means BBM’s laboured attempt to misguide you, dear reader, with clever wordplay sounds more stretched than usual, even by our low-low standards. Bear with us and it’ll all become clear. Probably. Villa Park groundsman Jonathan Calderwood has taken the unusual step of bringing in a hawk to scare off pesky magpies who have been tearing up the turf for no good reason. “The worst problem you could have is with crows who cause major problems with the grass roots,” said groundskeeper Willie. “But over the last few months we’ve had problems with magpies trying their luck with our pitch. They are not after food, like crows, but they are inquisitive creatures and dig holes in the turf which isn’t great.” Sounds like he might be getting them confused with hobbits. Have Villa signed Tony Cottee recently? “I think they are attracted to the ultra-violet light machines that we use through the week,” added Calderwood. “They perch on them and then swoop down on to the pitch.” He may have a point as they certainly aren’t attracted by the standard of football on offer. It’s also no coincidence that the magpies started to arrive after Emile Heskey left the club – the number of close-range shots that were booted high into the sky must have acted as a real deterrent for passing birds.
Keep Your Friends Close
As the old footballing cliche goes ‘what happens on the pitch, stays on the pitch’. Unfortunately, there are some cases where that just isn’t the case as senile FIFA overlord Sepp Blatter discovered when he made his Jeremy Clarkson-esque statement that racism during a game should just be settled by a handshake. Oh Sepp, we’d laugh at your granddad mentality if it weren’t for the fact you’re an evil, power-hungry megalomaniac dictator in charge of the world’s biggest sporting organisation. But aside from Sepp’s mad ramblings, there’s a certain Brazilian striker who’s just about to discover if rivalries really are ‘left on the field’. Last month,
Australian Grand Prix 2012
On the weekend of March 16th-18th, the Australian Grand Prix starts another season of the fastest sport on the planet, and the usual questions will be asked: can Lewis Hamilton win his second World Championship this year? Will the smooth class and consistency of Jenson Button keep him near the top? Can Fernando Alonso wrestle back the championship? Is Ferrari going to re-take its place atop the constructors table? The answer is no to all questions – obviously. (Well, we think, at least.) It’s difficult to see Sebastian Vettel releasing his clasp on the crown unless something incredibly drastic happens. Vettel won the title last season by a huge distance of 122 points, and the worry is that his smiling bonce will remain far and away from the pack in the same way that Michael Schumacher’s sinister mug dominated the sport in the early part of the last decade. Schumacher’s tenure in charge was easily the most mind-numbingly boring episode of F1 and actually lived up to the clichéd insult that non-F1 fans throw at the sport – that being that it’s just a bunch of cars going round in circles. Though it would be great to blame everything on Schumacher – and we’d really, really love to – the cars and rules at the time didn’t exactly allow a thrilling spectacle, and they were less races than processions, with the same drivers and cars finishing in the same positions race after race, year after year. Thankfully, the yawns from the crowd were finally noticed, and rules were enforced to improve the spectacle – and nowadays it resembles a proper competition and not just elaborate advertising events in which sponsors plaster their wares all over the place and fashionistas wander around pretending that they’re actually interested in the race. (Helena Christensen at the Monaco Grand Prix a few years ago was particularly funny: “So Miss Christensen, what attracts you to Monaco and Formula 1?” The interviewer asked. “Erm…the cars. Yeah…the cars are very nice.” Helena replied.) Though Vettel walked the title last year by a large margin, like Schumacher used to, unlike the Schumacher era the cars below 1st place provided enough excitement and intrigue to compensate for the lack of spectacle at the top of the table. In all likelihood the intrigue this season, again, lies below first place. Lewis Hamilton has claimed that he’s well prepared to improve on last year’s failure of finishing 5th – and expect all to go well until he resorts to his normal attitude and starts ramming people off the track – and look for the formerly chirpy Fernando Alonso to continue being a sulky bastard who struggles to do much without everybody bending over backwards to help him; also, keep a keen eye out for Jenson Button – because he’s so bloody dull it’s easy to forget he’s there. But it’s the return of Kimi Raikkonen, with Lotus, that’s arguably provided the most the most interest ahead of the season – with questions raised about whether his 2 year break from F1 will affect his ability to compete at the top level. The concern is that the 2007 world champion will come back a shell of his former self; in much the same way as Michael Schumacher did when he signed for Mercedes in 2010 following a 3 year retirement. Although we hate to keep going on about Schumacher – and we really, really do – his return made a mockery of Frank Williams’ quote that Schumacher would win races driving a ‘shopping trolley’, when he showed that without by far the best car on the grid he’s not the dominant phenomenon that people would claim him to be. (Alright, he was a great driver. Still hate him though.) The difference between the two is that Raikkonen continued to drive – albeit at a lower level – and has looked good in pre-season testing. Although admittedly pre-season testing is notoriously unreliable – and this season it was less a testing session and more a pageant for the title of ‘Ugliest Car in the World’ – Raikkonen looks to have retained his pace and ability to compete. We’ll find out more after the Grand Prix in Melbourne – which Sebastian Vettel will win. By Peter Simpson

CRYSTAL BALLS Leo
You and a group of friends are sucked into the ‘Realm of Dungeons & Dragons’ after taking a ride on an amusement park roller coaster. Upon arriving in the realm, you meet a dwarf with a weird comb-over who gives you each a magical item to defend yourselves with. Unfortunately, he’s run out of stuff by the time he gets to you and you have to make do with a “magical” eight-pack of sausages that have been reduced at Coles by 20 per cent. Good luck with the five-headed dragon.
Capricorn
You do a massive poo. It feels great. Life truly doesn’t get much better.
Aries
Our resident psychic, Crystal, tells you your fortune for the month...
Cancer
That webcam you hid in the girls toilets gets discovered this month. What happens next is not pretty. Let’s just say you’ll have a stiletto scar in a sensitive area for the rest of your life. Was it worth it to get the footage of Jane in accounts wiping her anus with an old newspaper? Only time will tell.
Taurus
Denver, the last dinosaur! He’s my friend and a whole lot more! Sorry I got a bit carried away there with my jammy dodger break which induced some sort of early 90s flash back. My bad.
Hallelujah sister! This month you discover the love of our lord Jesus Christ and become a born-again Christian. It’s a shame, really, as you were far more interesting when you used to be a weed-addicted transvestite who got kicks by sleeping with strangers in club toilets and vomiting on police cars. Call us when you get bored of bothering people outside train stations by shoving pamphlets about the resurrection into their hands.
Libra
One day this month, you’ll wake up the way you do every morning - by taking a ten-gallon hat off your face. Then you’ll put on your best shootin’ gear, don your spurs, climb onto a horse and trot gently into work, dipping your oversized hat at passing ladies with a polite “howd’y ma’am”. At work, you’ll bore co-workers with tales of grizzlies, rattlers and “injuns”. When you get home, your friends are all waiting for you. They’re concerned. They think you’re turning into a cowboy and have arranged an intervention. You should listen to them before it’s too late. The next phase is installing saloon doors in every room and getting a young Cherokee girl pregnant.
Virgo
Legally, I’m bound by horologist law (written by the great holy one Russell Grant, blessed be his name) not to say anything when I read someone’s future and see their impending death. All I’ll say is, don’t make any plans beyond the 15th. And you might wanna look into getting life insurance.
Pisces
After a heavy night on the sauce, you wake up next to a naked Ronan Keating. He’s dead. You have no recollection of what happened but there are a few clues, notably an eight-inch vibrator rammed up his arse and the tell-tale signs of jizz in your hair. We’d tell you what happened but it runs into next month. Pick up April’s BBM to find out.
Gemini
It’s no surprise Gemini is the sign of the twins as you’re carrying the weight of two men at the minute. You fat bastard. The sight of you waddling into my crystal ball every month puts me off my tea. Lose some weight porky.
Scorpio
Sorry Scorpio, my crystal ball doesn’t pick up your signal. It’s just a load of fuzz. At one stage I thought I saw a man sucking a cock but I think I was just picking up the gay porn channel by accident. Sorry love.
Aquarius
I really can’t be doing with you and your boring bullshit this month Aquarius. Seriously, if you tell anyone else that story about the mole falling off your lower lip again, I’ll shove this bloody crystal ball up your arse. Take a leaf out of ‘old’ Aries’s book and live an interesting life. Don’t do the religion thing though. That’s just weird.
Sagittarius
You invent a new dance craze “The spasming man”. Well done. Actually, it’s not so much a dance craze, as viral YouTube footage that your mates took of you at a club. You’re officially a global laughing stock. Say goodbye to sex for the next three months.
ASK CRYSTAL Dear Crystal, I’m trying to make a suit out of human skin but I’m having real trouble trying to get the shoulders right. I’ve killed and skinned four prostitutes in the last month, but every time I try and flay the shoulder area, it tears up the skin and the whole thing is ruined. It’s enough to make me want to mutiliate my own genitals with a razor blade while crying and yelling “why daddy? Why?!” I’ve even tried curing the skin in formaldehyde but it didn’t work. Please help! Yours, Terence the Reincarnator Dear Terence, Two words: chicken fillets. I’m assuming you’re using the patchwork method to create the suit. If so, the next time you kill a whore, simply cut out a larger flap of skin for the shoulder area than you would normally, wrap it up around a chicken fillet, and place in the fridge overnight. The next morning, you’ll find the epidermis much more flexible and less likely to tear when cutting. Happy tailoring! Dear Crystal, I’m really having trouble getting a boyfriend and I don’t know what to do. I came to Australia a year ago with my friend and, while she goes through fellas like there’s no tomorrow, I struggle to even get noticed. The thing is, and I don’t want to sound mean, she’s not really that attractive. She’s quite a big girl, constantly wears low cut tops down the pub and farts like a sailor. I look after my body much more, dress appropriately and would die of embarrassment if a guy heard me farting - yet she’s the one who gets the attention. She’s great fun to be around, but I just don’t get where I’m going wrong. What should I do?Yours, Rachel Dear Rachel, Two words: chicken fillets. If this friend of yours is fat, she’ll have one redeeming feature that shallow blokes love - big tits. And if she’s flaunting them too, she could fart the tune to Waltzing Matilda and men would still want to shag her. Simply pop a couple of fillets down your bra and, trust me, you’ll be fighting the men off with a shitty stick. Plus

Like I’m gonna explode!” “You’re ovulating,” explained the rooster. “Don’t tell me you’ve never laid an egg before?” “Never,” said Ed. “Well, just relax and let it happen,” says the rooster. “It’s no big deal.” He did, and a few uncomfortable seconds later, out popped an egg! Relax on one of the comfy sofas or prop yourself up at the glass-top bar and take in the heady atmosphere. The bar is inspired by New York cool, and the cocktail list is extensive and even takes you back in time, should your wish be an old school drink. Fine service completes the experience, and your visit to the Blu Bar on 36 is likely to be something you will remember for some time. Level 36 Shangri-La Hotel 176 Cumberland Street The Rocks 2000 Had your fill of the regular bars and clubs in Sydney? Looking to escape the drunken rabble for somewhere more chilled out and exclusive? Still got the energy to go late into the night? Don’t despair, because we at BBM have selected a few after hours hang outs for you to utilise Sydney to its full potential.
Zeta Bar
Eau-de-Vie is one of Sydney’s hidden gems. A classy, intimate and atmospheric cocktail bar tucked away at the back of the Kirketon Hotel, the quality drinks and the good times flow easily here. A spellbinding array of cocktails and drinks are on offer in this joint, but make sure you have got plenty of dollars left in your pockets when you get there as they won’t come cheap. But then that is why you’re here, surely -to soak up the hip atmosphere and mingle with the sophisticated clientele, and to sample the finest cocktails in the city. 229 Darlinghurst Road Darlinghurst 2010

On the Rocks Our staff recently had the chance to try a tipple (bottle) of ASM Liquor’s; pioneers of such alcoholic delights as Vodka-O, Tequila Blu and Kinky Rum, newest addition to the spirit family ‘Rocking Angel’ Kentucky Whisky Bourbon.
The Kings Cross Hotel is a great place to spend an evening/morning in Sydney. With a beautiful rooftop bar to sip cocktails and take in the views over the city and a good time dive bar, there is really something for everyone here. But the Dive Bar at the Kings Cross Hotel is really anything but. With a strict entry policy, it is in reality a relatively high class establishment serving an array of beers and drinks until 6am to only the coolest cats in Sydney. With a jukebox stuffed full of tunes and various pool tables to test your skills, the bar is a great way to start your evening in Sydney before moving on to the cocktail bars, or alternatively the place to finish up. We recommend starting at the rooftop and then taking the lift down to the Dive bar, as it probably easier to get accepted into the bar via the strict doormen once you are already in the building. 244-248 William Street Kings Cross 2011
A chic cocktail bar located inside the Hilton hotel and situated in the heart of Sydney’s Central Business District, the Zeta Bar is a great place to enjoy a more sophisticated night out. With its stylish décor, innovative cocktails and impressive selection of drinks, the bar has deservedly garnered acclaim from its local and international visitors, as well as winning a whole host of annual industry awards. Well-dressed barmen serve up the cocktails masterminded by Zeta mixologist and consultant Grant Collins, as you find a lavish armchair you can sit on to rest your weary feet and sip your expensively made tipple. Alternatively, step out onto the stunning outside terrace for spectacular views of the Sydney skyline, while you clutch your gin or cocktail and act all business-like and important. The Zeta can get very busy, so be prepared for quick, no frills service if this is the case. But whenever you go The Zeta Bar is sure to provide you with a great night out in Sydney.

The Star 24/7 Sports Bar
If you just want to let go of pretension, have a few pints and roar your team on to victory, then make your way down to the 24/7 Sports Bar of The Star casino on Pyrmont Street. If there is a big game on- whether it is rugby, cricket or football- then you are sure to find it screened here. The spacious bar boasts a quality menu of drinks and hearty pub food too, and is the ideal place to catch those overseas games you feel you cannot afford to miss. Oh, and if you put on your team s shirt ready for the English Premier League game at 24/7 Sports Bar you will be able to get $4 Schooners of local beer throughout the entire day. Takes some beating that, even if (Wigan and Wolves supporters) your team doesn’t. Level G, Casino The Star 80 Pyrmont Street Pyrmont NSW 2009

With the promise of three years of ageing in a charred white oak barrel, infusions of vanilla and caramel and the traditional corn, malted barley and rye whose smooth flavours was probably responsible for the conception of Kentucky born Johnny Depp and George Clooney (we’re just saying) we had no choice but to sample, and then sample again, and then triple check until we were left with an empty bottle with some amazing artwork on the front to put our flowers in. The bourbon is sharp, not overly-sweet and sticks to the standard of the rest of the ASM range, and with the appeal of the Rocking Angel design and it’s $40 price tag we would recommend it as a mixer, straight, as a shot or just to stare at if you are into that kind of thing. It’s not a top-shelf type of drink but it will not offend any taste-buds and we are happily (and very surprisingly) not suffering from any cheap alcohol hangover effects. We also got a cool hat with the bottle so all in all Rocking Angel is a BBM type of drop. By Alex McIntyre

GET INSPIRED TravelBooks Here at BBM we love nothing more than a good holiday, trip or outright adventure. But before you follow your wanderlust, we’d like to point you in the direction of our recommended travel guides and inspirational real life stories, which will provide you with both the inspiration and knowledge you desire as you set about embarking on your next trip.
‘When Gods Collide’ by Kate James
Written by Melbourne author Kate James ‘When Gods Collide’ is a mix between a travelogue, memoir and biography. After wrestling with her experiences of growing up in India, James returns to investigate and find the answers related to the murder of Graham Staines. Staines’, murder took place on 22nd January 1999, when Hindu fundamentalists in Orissa, burnt him, and his two sons alive whilst they were asleep in his car. James’ tale takes her back to the subcontinent where she grew up, in pursuit of the man behind the headlines, whilst examining the context behind the conflict in a country known for its strong religious tolerance. The story sees her travelling from Ooty to Darjeeling via the Coromandel Coast, visiting Catholic shrines, an atheist ashram, a temple to Hindu missionaries and the Kolkata slums.
‘The Grownup Gap Year Diaries’ by Laura Bloom
Have you ever been jealous of your old university friends, who upon graduating were able to drop everything and travel the world? Well now it turns out that more adults are following suit , and embarking on their own gap year adventures. People like author Laura Bloom, who documets her experiences in the ‘The Grownup Gap Year Diaries’. This book tells of the highlights of a middle aged female traveller. Bloom’s tale includes unexpected experiences and tips on how to be a responsible traveller. Whether it’s surviving the Oz Experience ‘party on wheels’ bus to living off £5 a day after losing her bank card in Asia, ‘The Grownup Gap Year Diaries’ details the highs and lows of Laura’s time traveling, whilst providing an insight into the life of a grown-up traveller. Not only does it recount the entertaining tales from her trips, the book also offers advice on the practicalities of travelling, offering money-saving tips and advice on where to go. After reading this, you’re surely going to want to hop on the nearest plane and jet off somewhere, so make sure you grab the sister book ‘Gap Years for Grown Ups’ to find ideas and help to create your own gap year journey.
However deep the tale may be, James admirably explores India’s complex tapestry whilst understanding and coming to terms with the faith she rejected.
‘Just a Little Run Around the World’ by Rosie Swale Pope
After her husband died of cancer, 57-year-old Rosie Swale Pope took it upon herself raise money in the memory of the man she loved by running around the world,. After the devastating loss of her husband, Swale Pope left her home in Wales with nothing but her backpack full of food and equipment, using money from the rent of her cottage to begin an epic 5-year journey, taking herself 20,000 miles around the world. During her adventure, she was followed by wolves, knocked down by a bus, confronted by bears, chased by a naked man with a gun and stranded with severe frostbite. This heart-warming story will grip and inspire you. On some days Swale Pope would run 30 miles, others only 500 yards, as she battled extreme conditions, including digging herself out of snow at -62 degrees C. Each step, every mile was a triumph and a celebration of the human spirit. Swale Pope travels took across Europe, Russia, Asia, Alaska, North America, Greenland and Iceland, before she returned home to the welcoming crowds in Tenby, Wales, after running through 53 pairs of shoes. Swale Pope’s story pulls on the heart strings and is a tale, that inspires hope, courage and determination, whilst making sure you yearn to live every day to the maximum. These books are here to inspire you to create your own journey and adventure, geared to help you experience life to the full and embrace every day like it’s your last. By David Mahoney
‘The Only Lesson’ by Bill McKenna
Adventurer and near-death survivor Bill McKenna reveals one of life’s most important lessons in this harrowing autobiography. In his memoir, McKenna tells of his struggles to overcome depression, abuse, shipwrecks and even a horrifying skydiving accident that left him plummeting towards earth. “My book started as a literal and figurative accident when I wrecked my yacht in Mexico” stated McKenna. “That set in motion a series of events that charted me in a direction I had no intention of going. I am just a regular guy who stumbled into an extraordinary experience.” The book documents McKenna’s life, including everything from his strict Irish- Catholic childhood to a 13,000 bike ride, each contributing to the series of lessons McKenna had learned throughout his life. The book weaves his experiences in with the retrospective lessons he has learnt, such as the importance of forgiveness and the value of intuition. According to McKenna, each small lesson is merely sets the reader up for learning their own lessons, they will learn and discover of the course of this book. “This is a crossover book, the true adventures give way to a powerful message that will change how readers view life”.

VISAS & TAX Living Away from Home Allowance (LAFHA) What is LAFHA? LAFHA, stands for “Living Away from Home Allowance”. It is a form of salary packaging designed to address additional costs for residing away from your principle place of residence to work. Our experience ensures that a Living Away from Home Allowance (LAFHA) is applied correctly, based on information you provide us.
How does it work? A proportion of your salary is tax-free and therefore goes straight into your pocket. At the end of the day, because you are paying tax and superannuation on only a proportion, you end up with more cash in hand on every pay check than if you were to have been payrolled direct by your employer or recruitment agency.
visa news Major changes to be introduced to the Australian Skilled Migration Program on 01 July 2012. The Skilled Migrant Selection Register (SkillSelect) is a new Australian visa program aimed to ensure that the best and brightest skilled migrants from a pool of intending migrants are selected for visa processing. On 01 July 2012, SkillSelect will replace the existing skilled migration program and will reform the way Australia selects skilled migrants for visa processing. ‘SkillSelect gives the Australian government more control over who they let into the country but it will create significant uncertainty for intending skilled migrants’ says Declan Visafirst.com.
How do I know if I am eligible?
In particular, it will impact those interested in independent, family, state or territory sponsored and business skills migration.
Australian’s, New Zealanders and some foreign nationals may be eligible. You may be on a temporary contract or moving interstate for a fixed term role. It is down to personal circumstances, you will need to contact freespirit and complete an assessment to see whether you fully qualify or not.
So how will it work ?
Can I apply LAFHA directly myself? No, LAFHA is applied via your salary, hence your employer will need to manage this or via a third party company such as freespirit.
Can an ABN Holder/Sole Trader claim LAFHA? No. An individual cannot employ themselves and hence they cannot be paid by a salary package. To do that the entity would have to be say a company. Then they could employ the individual.
If I receive LAFHA, can I still claim tax back at the end of the financial year? Yes, at the end of the tax year, you may still be able to claim the amounts of tax that you have paid.
Are there other area’s that can be salary packaged? Yes, such as novated leases, Insurance, school fee’s and many more.
What is Super? Superannuation is a mandatory amount of money paid by your employer into an account in your name with Superannuation Fund for your retirement. All workers including temporary residents to Australia are entitled to Superannuation. This is equivalent to pension or social payments in other countries.
How do I set this up? There are many financial institutions that offer Super funds, it’s worth while shopping around and sticking to one fund once you have found the right one for you.
Can I claim any Super back? Yes, the great thing is that you may be able to claim some of your superannuation back once your visa expires. You will be able to claim your refund once you have: finished working for your employer; departed Australia and your visa has expired. You will not be able to claim until both these conditions have been satisfied.
I worked in Australia a long time ago - can I still get my superannuation refund?
SkillSelect is based on an electronic two-stage process whereby intending migrants • Stage 1 - submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) • Stage 2 - you must be invited to apply for a skilled migration visa by DIAC (Department of Immigration and Citizenship) Despite lodging an EOI, there is NO GUARANTEE that you will ever move on to stage 2 (i.e. invited to apply for a skilled migration visa). You remain on a database of interested applicants ranked by points awarded, date of application and occupation for up to 2 years. When lodging an EOI, you must meet the points criteria, have your skills assessed and an English language test already carried out. So there will be a financial outlay without any guarantee of being invited to lodge a visa application. It is also worth noting that quotas will be introduced to this new system to prevent the pool being dominated by a narrow range of occupations. Once the limit is reached each year, there will be no further opportunity for that occupation to apply. People should be aware that they could remain on the system for the 2 year period without ever being invited to apply for a visa (stage two). After that if you have not been invited to apply for the visa your EOI is removed. You can submit another EOI if the 2 year period has lapsed, you not been invited to apply for a skilled visa and subsequently have been removed from the pool. Again, you must meet the necessary visa requirement including the minimum pass mark and your occupation quota must not be full, to submit the second EOI. ‘Keep in mind that you will be two years older which may effect your points score, your IELTS will be out of date after 2 years so you need to do this again and depending on your occupation, you may need to do your skills assessment all over again- this will be a non refundable cost to the applicant’, Clune, Visafirst.com. After all this cost and work, there is still no guarantee that you will receive an invitation letter to apply for a permanent visa. If you are looking at applying for permanent residency, you should get your application lodged to our Sydney office as soon as possible to prevent you being affected by the July 2012 changes. For further details or a free assessment call 02 8297 6173. Those with a job offer will not be effected by the upcoming changes and we can continue to lodge a sponsorship visa for them. In addition those applying for a second year working holiday visa will not be effectedby the changes. VisaFirst.com provides global visa and travel support services to more than 85,000 people working and travelling in over 100 countries every year.
Yes – provided you have left Australia permanently and your visa has expired (or cancelled), you can claim your Australian superannuation refund as far back as 1992. Fill out our application form and submit the relevant documents and we will get this money back for you.
