Coming up at The Standard is the finest pick ‘n’ mix of entertainment evenings. Reminiscent of a traditional Cadbury’s selection box you just have to eat weeks before Christmas, just in the next week or so; Yacht Club DJ’s are sailing into The Standard to bring you the biggest in mash-up electro anthems. Grab a couple of mates, guzzle some beers and open your ears; The Standard is Sydney’s brand spanker of a bar - fueled for a top night of tunes. If live music is your flavour, The Standard is the perfect place to be any night of the week. It’s got the feeling of home and being a ‘local’ when you walk into the place with a sense of déjà vu even when you know you’ve never been here before. Every major city in Britain has this type of venue, the dark and deep rooms designed for bands to strut their stuff to fans of all ages. Sadly, Sydney isn’t teeming with these venues, so that’s why it’s a bloody good job The Standard is around, and here to stay. This venue has been a legendary hang out for years. Since the 1980s it has been home to bands such as The Beastie Boys and The Lemonheads to name but a few. It has been on the map as a live music venue since it was called Kinsela’s, which is why you can tell it isn’t a place which can be used as a music venue ‘if need be’ this is a ‘live music venue’ from the heart and soul and a constant on the music map of the city. The Standard is accessible from all sides of central Sydney and the drinks aren’t too heavily priced which makes it just that bit better for your wallet. Everyone knows that live music and beers go together like a fine lamb shank and a dab of mint sauce. The Standard makes life that little bit easier when deciding what to do with your night, creating a hang out that truly does set ‘The Standard.’ For a midsize space, this place can accommodate up to 500 fun-loving partygoers who are in it to win it; enjoying everything from live music and scratch-nights, stand-up comedy and theatre through to cabaret and the odd gallery exhibition. This joint really is an all-purpose performance space, and a clear winner for Sydney’s scene.

Frames café is the don when it comes to eggs Benedict, also supporting a fine lunch menu with some funky tunes in the backdrop - it seems there is just too much choice around the Surry Hills suburb when it comes to finding a good cup of coffee and a brunch to match.

Sydney doesn’t have to be all about the beaches and the busy-bee CBD. There are some amazing areas within the city, which are easily accessible from the CBD without the ridiculous prices and lack of community vibe. If café culture has your name written all over it, then Surry Hills is your new best friend. You can live the inner-city life without feeling crazy inside with all the hustle and bustle. The streets are lined with vibrant trees and beautiful Victorian architecture, making you feel at home the minute you step foot into Surry Hills.

Getting Into town... With everything on your doorstep it’s difficult to think of a reason why you would want to leave the leafy suburbs and head to the big city lights. However, some of you do have to earn a living ‘city-style’ and also, it is always a refreshing change to get into the city of Sydney, the sights, sounds and bustling vibe is always so different to that of other Australian cities. To get out of Surry Hills and into the CBD, the easiest mode of transport if you don’t fancy a casual wander or a short ride on the pushbike, is the bus or the train. At every bus stop around Surry Hills you can get to the city centre on one bus route alone such as the M50 or the 440, check the simple Sydney route planner online. A short walk to Central Station opens your eyes to the city with every CBD train stop only minutes away. A cab shouldn’t be more than $15 either so is quite reasonable if there’s yourself and a few mates.

The flavours of Surry Hills… Surry Hills is bursting with restaurants to suit every mood. Porteno restaurant brings Argentinian soul to the streets of Surry Hills. Best mates Ben Milgate and Elvis Abrahanowicz show some true brotherly love for the food and their customers. This place is not just about the food and the open grills and fires - it’s about having fun and letting loose after work or just kicking back for a great meal out. The people of Surry Hills really know how to wine and dine whatever night of the week it is and restaurants such as Trinity Bar make meetings with your mates easier too. With $10 steaks, and $9 jugs of beer on the menu, it’s smiles all around in this joint. Surry Hills may not be the cheapest of areas, but having a drink and a catchup with your work colleagues, friends, or friendly strangers, doesn’t have to break the bank. The Shakespeare Hotel doesn’t pretend to be anything it isn’t. Genuine people and down to earth prices. It also goes down swimmingly with a good group of mates and some stories to be told. This place is run by two friends who have many a story to tell, and have gone on to call their establishment ‘Tio’s’ which in Spanish slang means ‘dude’. What a place. Shady Pines is a joint with a difference which has to be mentioned. This saloon-style bar is the word on everyone’s lips. Crown Street comes alive at night, thankfully not to the sound of horses or gunfire. But with the sound of laughter, whisky being poured to the masses and just a top night being had by all. Surry Hills definitely isn’t a place for tumbleweed either.

Boutique Life… When you walk around the Surry Hills establishments, it’s rather obvious to the eye to see that everyone here looks pretty damn cool a lot of the time. Not to say that this suburb is the most “sceney” in Sydney, however, the ample collection of unique boutiques lining the streets helps make your wardrobe that little bit quirkier. Areas like Surry Hills and Newtown are renowned for their vintage expressions when it comes to stores. Grandma Takes A Trip is full to the brim with excellent little finds which will look amazing in your new Surry Hills wardrobe! Mr. Stinky’s on Cleveland Street will provide you with hours of pure eye euphoria as you step inside this little haven of goodies for both men and women and everything in between!

Accommodation... Surry Hills accommodation starts at the standard $25 a night for the hostels. For a one-bed studio you will be looking at around $280 per week, then moving up the ladder to a two-bed apartment for around $600 per week, making it slightly cheaper than Bondi and Manly suburbs. If you want the vibrancy and that feeling of being ‘home’ without being trapped inside the crazy city corners, Surry Hills makes life in Sydney that little more endearing. The shops and cafes ooze character, and the boutique culture and ‘spoil yourself’ lifestyle is so very appealing. Surry Hills provides so many opportunities to meet people, feel part of a community and has a very upcoming and exciting scene. Just have a wander down the quaint streets to feel the love its inhabitants share for the Hills.

When your belly screams for a deli, Surry Hills isn’t afraid to shout back. Formaggi Ocello answers all of your cheese and wine prayers. Recently awarded ‘The Best Cheese Store’ in Sydney, this delicatessen is stocked full with five star collections of breads, ham, jam, and cheeses - you name it, they’ve got it. Bourke St Bakery - this is in no way a Surry Hills secret, however, there is a good reason for it being so widely known and sought after. The queue is usually around the corner at all eating hours, but hey, good things come to those who wait. The Book Store is exactly what you need as the sun rises and you head to work or pop out in your pyjamas to pick up something for a weekend session of breakfast in bed. Kitsch and quirky, this place is organically conscious and morphs into a buzzing restaurant at night.

A fifteen-minute ferry ride north from Circular Quay will take you through what is arguably one of the most spectacular harbours in the world and into a hip-n-happening place surrounded by unmatched natural beauty. Once you get your breath back and step onto the wharf, you’ll be hit by a gourmet selection of visual sensations. Get ready, because between you and the ocean lies a plethora of boutiques, bars and beach-related activities, perfect for any season and every palette. What better place to start than where you land. If you need to fuel up for a busy afternoon of fun, you can’t go past Hugo’s. A name that is synonymous with a good time in Sydney, this place sure knows how to deliver a wicked pizza and cocktail combination. Authentic Italian cuisine coupled with jugs of Sangria will certainly get your day off to a good start. If “Vorspiel” (or “foreplay”) with a beer is more your thing, you can head next door to the Bavarian Bier Café, for authentic German brews and bratwurst. But before you shy away from the cooler weather and settle in for too many cosy pints, start making your way east – you won’t regret it. Walking through the “Corso” towards the beach, you’ll quickly pick up the relaxed coastal vibe that Manly is famous for putting down. The walkway is big enough for bike riders, pavement surfers and families alike, so you can make your way from high-fashion boutique to multi-story surf shop, all the while enjoying your very special personal space – a true treat in a city as closely packed in as Sydney. If shopping is your thing, you must – and we mean must – check out at least one of these all-class boutiques – Mint, Karabu and Mr & Mrs Smith. These guys know their style, stocking high-end local and international brands through to funky designer fashion. Just don’t expect to get a bargain unless it’s around sale time. Manly is also the home to the highest concentration of surf shops in the world, with 15 speciality stores offering everything from clothing and equipment through to surfing tips and perfect-ten pervs (for both guys and gals!). Once you’re loaded up with card-board-and-string shopping bags, it’s time to get back to basics and take in some of the world-class scenery that makes Manly so special. Sure, your feet will get you there, but why not re-live your childhood memories and hire yourself a pair of in-line skates. Yep, we’re talking about rollerblades. Skater HQ on the beachfront offers rollerblade hire for $20 per hour or $30 a day; as well as skateboards and bikes. You can head north to Queenscliff (or “Queenies” to the locals) or south to Shelly Beach. Whichever way you go, you’ll bare witness to some of the best views on the Northern beaches. On a good weather day, you might even consider jumping in the water for some of the stand-up-paddle-board action that has taken this place by storm. Manly Kayak Centre on the Esplanade will do you sweet deal on the equipment, and they’ll even show you how to do it without falling off. By now you should have worked up quite the appetite, so it’s time to find somewhere to eat. This is not a hard task in Manly, although you might have trouble making a decision! Hemmingway’s is the place for classy cocktails among unique 1920s-inspired décor. Even the staff take their inspiration from the great writer, sporting beautifully manicured moustaches and oozing with charm. If you’re looking to wine and dine, head to the Manly Wine Bar, for tastings and tapas surrounded by old-world charm (keep an eye out for the peacock!). A warning though, it’s a little expensive. If you’re in the mood for some live music with your meal, you could head back into the Corso and check in at InSitu. Famous for its cool staff and killer live sets, this is the perfect destination if you want to turn your late afternoon drinks into something to remember. But if you haven’t had enough of the water, head to Murray’s Brewery, right on the beachfront. Order yourself a locally brewed beer and a plate of the garlic muscles, sit yourself down on the balcony and enjoy – this place is worth every cent in inflated property tax because the views are amazing. No matter where you end up, Manly will show you a good night. Just remember that being wasted and catching waves don’t mix!

CHECK THIS OUT - SYDNEY Top Bars In Manly Upon visiting Manly you’d be hard pushed to not find a bevvy of entertainment, but if you’re in a shadow of doubt as where best to sink a few schooners, BBM is here to help. Here we talk you through a couple of good venues to get your drink on. Walking down The Corso you can feel somewhat spoilt for choice yet Ivanhoe Hotel Manly has more to it than meets the eye. The open spaced bar looks essential enough with its classic behind bar selection and several television sets dotted around. Here though they pride themselves on the food and during the week their menu offers real value with real variety. Whilst most bars would have $10 steak as a special occasionally during the week, here it is a bestselling fixture. Meat lovers can also rejoice at the Flame Grilled Baby Back Pork Ribs, which are lovingly braised for a full 90 minutes. They even grill the seafood with the equally finger licking good BBQ Sweet Sticky Prawns served Asian style tucked amidst the likes of Tasmanian Salmon, Fish and Chips and Barramundi.

The bar also has it sorted for entertainment. As one of few bars on the beachfront that can offer live music at the weekend, it also showcases acts for free in The Lobby. Start Friday night with the latest pick in tiptop, untapped local talent while Saturday nights are all about the old school Pub Rock covers. That is the weekend ticked off but school nights are not forgotten either; from free Trivia on Tuesday night, free Pool on Wednesdays from 5.30 to free Karaoke on Thursday. For sports fans there is the iSports Bar which boasts the biggest full HD television in the Southern Hemisphere as well as several other, lesser gargantuan screens and a TAB as standard. Upstairs, however, it can get a bit livelier. The top floor is the main draw; the i2 Lounge, an elegant club, lit by lines of elaborate lanterns with a secluded rooftop courtyard overlooking The Corso. Up here the vibe feels more relaxed and so it should with an extensive wine list and cocktails galore including extravagant martinis and fruity daiquiris.

Take your time and consider your surroundings for where the bar excels is in its variety and use of space. Whether you want to have a quiet chat taking in the view, hide in a booth with a siginificant other or let your hair down, simply pick your spot. Mind the dancefloor though, as at the weekend you can present yourself at the whims of the DJ in the i2 Rooftop Terrace. With its Eastern vibe, the lounge feels a few thousand miles away from the beach that lies below and with the intimate dining booths you can enjoy that welcome sense of seclusion from the hoi polloi. Even better, fancy the space to you and your bezzies? Simple. The lounge or even the individual booths can be hired out to suit any size or style of function and catered for with canapes and rates set out for 30 to 200 people. The room is amply spaced yet there are plans afoot in the coming months for expansion into the building next door for even more than meets the eye than there is now.

Where The Corso meets the beach is the Hotel Styne; a local’s local and one that is returning to its roots, back to the community. The building dominates a corner and has been a staple fixture in Manly’s bar scene for decades, yet times change. In order to remain in demand the venue now offers something different, something more. A new direction from new ownership two years ago with the operative of restoring a classic, a revamping will take place to transform this landmark site into five different venues in one. Of course, there are those who fear change and prefer their local as it was and forever will be. Indeed, part of the restoration has involved stripping down rather than ripping up and starting over. Through the side entrance is the Round Bar where familiarity is key for the Resches drinking regulars. Even the walls look as they did decades ago as layer upon layer of wallpaper has been stripped right down to the original tiles.

Around the corner in the Seaside Food & Craft Beer Bar the walls are adorned with local scenes snapped by local photographers giving the room a homely atmosphere. Here is where the heart lies, where you can grab counter to gourmet food; from nachos to Scotch fillet. Take a look at the bar too, a long look as you can dip your toe into one of 18 craft and international beers. The bar does not merely serve food and drink but the local community too, as morning groups can settle down in the morning, but by night the bar staff themselves swap serving schooners for spinning choons ranging from Blues to Old School Hip Hop via Soul, Funk and Indie Pop. Upstairs is Moonshine, a Cider and Rum bar. That’s right, a bar that exclusively sells 16 ciders on tap and 100 different rums. But that is not all, while the room looks fit for the Pirates of The Caribbean set, pop your head round on a Thursday night and along with your freshly filled glass you will find guitars with live acts performing either Indie Rock or Folk and Blues to kick off your weekend. With Monday morning poking around the corner, sometimes

we all need a respite on Sunday night too and in the same room you will find Roots Reggae and Dub Hip Hop for those back to work blues. The restoration is not finished there as building continues on a Chinese restaurant with the emphasis on the sociable with a banqueting table and an adjacent cocktail bar. You could spend days in The Hotel Steyne, literally. For those willing to miss the ferry back and wanting to stay a little past the 1am lockout on weekends and public holidays the hotel has a range of rates to suit. Yet even if you want to pop in and breeze past there is the cafe for a quick coffee and snack. Fancy a flutter? There’s even the Magic Millions Bar, a sports bar with live coverage on 11 different TVs and, handily, a TAB. From locals to revelers, Rock ‘n’ Rollers to early birds, there’s something for everyone. For a healthy lunch, Soulsoup, is the urban kitchen for hearty, honest homemade soups, and tasty salads, perfect if you want something light to keep you going. Victoria Street in the suburb of Richmond is home to a whole street of BYO Vietnamese restaurants. Perfectly suited for the backpacker on a budget - or people who just appreciate a tasty cheap feed, you can take your pick of where you want to pull up a seat and open a bottle of shelf bought booze. The street itself looks a little shady compared to the high-end city laneways - but trust us it’s safe as houses. The street is bustling and full of appealing Vietnamese eateries for you and your mates to decide between. Some of BBM’s personal favourites are Minh Minh, Thy Thy and Pho 2. There are a few more upmarket places dotted along the street but mainly it is cheap

food can be delivered from Absolute Thai, a take out that cooks up a much more diverse, fresh selection of food to arrive at your door. Make your selection between the likes of noodles, rice, Thai soups and salad; or between their meat, seafood, and vegetarian dishes for a satisfactory meal that beats your typical pizza or Chinese options any day.

Searching for beautiful things, and a snazzy haircut…

Fitzroy has much more to offer than great grub though. The creativity blossoming in hidden crevices of the streets is an integral factor contributing to the buzzing atmosphere of the place. The Rose Street Artist Market – is ‘for lovers of all things handmade’ – selling the best of art, fashion, photography, jewellery, homewares, and vintage. Industria is an innovative retail shop for contemporary furniture, as well as vintage pieces and jewellery found on Gertrude Street. Each establishment has its own identity. All you need to do is pop into Dr Follicles, Fitzroy’s pride and joy of a barbershop, to realise no business settles for a bland first impression. Retro items litter the walls, and classic songs play on vinyl, while cheery hairdressers snip your locks off. Apparently free beer was originally part of the haircut package, but licensing laws stopped the beer, and now the substitute offered to enjoy during your haircut is dim sum…obviously.

Drinking in the midst of music… The Old Bar on Johnstone Street stages gigs seven nights a week, and is a cheerful place, boasting a romantic fire and Coopers on tap. A variety of genres throughout the new music scene are supported in here, so if you’d rather be pleasantly entertained by acoustic strings rather than the thrashing of an electric guitar, just check up on the listings beforehand. The Old Bar certainly offers something sweet for everyone’s ears, although variations of blues and folk are the favoured genres here.

Whether you’re a fulltime vegetarian or just up for something easy on the wallet ‘Lentil As Anything’ is definitely worth checking out. Taking place in a convent of all places – you sure as hell can B.Y.O! This place truly is something special – a buffet full of delicious flavoursome vegetarian food. The best thing about it is you pay whatever you feel the food deserves. That’s right we take a break from overpriced city good menus and are welcomed with our cask of goon or box of beer to eat some wholesome grub and pay what we wish. But be fair on the legends that organise and cook this for us – people work hard just as we do, and as the saying goes there is no such thing as a free lunch! Who can turn down a good old-fashioned barbeque? Certainly not the Aussies. As we all know they love their ‘barbies’ and Section 8 Bar hosts the coolest BBQ in town. The venue itself is one of our favourites to go to, built from a large shipping container it is the cool grunge of Melbourne at its best. The outside area is something different with seating areas raised on wooden stacks and a DJ playing some sick beats throughout. Street art lines the walls surrounding and the grub on offer isn’t your average BBQ handouts. Expect foot-long hotdogs with all the trimmings on crisp fresh baguettes. The BBQ session takes place when the sun is shining and it is the only place to be if you’re into your dance music. And what better way to listen to it than munching on your extra-large $7 sausage. Bimbo Deluxe

Slap bang in the middle of the uber trendy Brunswick Street lies Bimbo’s- the loving sister of Lucky Coq down on Chapel Street. Bimbo’s plays host to local and international DJ’s week in week out. Also it hosts the famous $4 gourmet pizza’s which can be consumed amongst mates throughout the week whilst listening to some quality tunes pump form the DJ booth. A mention has to go out in particularly to Friday and Saturday night when Bimbo’s really gets loose. Pizza’s do double in price but you pay for the atmosphere as the tunes get lifted, and more feet step through the door to get down to some top tunes at the weekend. 376 Brunswick St, Fitzroy

So if you want some entertainment with your evening feed, Red Benny’s offers a different flare and flavour altogether. Here you’ll find a different kind of music experience, as this place takes a meal and music to a whole new level. If you’re wanting a more swanky evening this venue will not disappoint. The décor is fabulous - think 1920’s cabaret club in downtown Paris. With tasteful furniture, red velvet a plenty and a huge stage it’s a sure winner for a cracking evening meals entertainment. Staying and travelling… Fitzroy has a fair few accommodation options, with hostels charging around $30+ per night, so finding somewhere to crash for the night shouldn’t be an issue if you’re on a tight budget. If you’re planning on staying a bit longer and settling down in Fitzroy for the longer haul, house share prices start from around $250 per week, so again, if you’ve got some regular work, this shouldn’t break the bank, and of course if you don’t want shared accommodation then you’ll be looking at around anything from $300-$400 per week. Getting around in between places is just as fuss-free, the 402 bus route will take you from North Melbourne to Fitzroy in a speedy 10 minute journey, or taxi’s will shuttle you about from a flagfall rate of $3.20. There is no doubt you will find your place within the innovative and inspiring community. We wanted avoid it, but denying the truth is foolish; so if you are free-spirited, creative, literate individual, we can’t stress just how much you’ll feel at home in Fitzroy, the truly bohemian quarter of Melbourne. GIPPSLAND - VICTORIA Gippsland - The Unknown Aussie Road Trip Chances are if you’ve done a road trip in Australia or are planning one it is going to have been on the East Coast, The Great Ocean Road or, at a push, the West Coast if you were feeling particularly ‘out there’. Us backpackers like to know that at no stage will we be more than 50m from a grotty bar selling schooners of VB. We’re a sucker for following the well-trodden trails of past generations because it’s tried and tested and we know we wont fail to have a good time. Well my friends, there is a new kid on the road trip scene that is going to knock the socks off the beaches of NSW, ridicule the rainforests of Queensland and trump everything the usual resorts offer by providing backpackers with a place to ski. Where we hear you ask? Gippsland. Heard of it? We didn’t think so.

Where Is Gippsland? Gippsland is an enormous rural area in Victoria that begins immediately east of the suburbs of Melbourne and stretches all the way along the coast to the borders of NSW. Between the Great Dividing Range in the north and the Bass Strait in the south, the region is home to snowfields, wilderness, rainforest, beaches, farmland and more. On top of all of these treats it is located on Australia’s Number 1 highway making it incredibly accessible and just screaming out for you to fire up that ‘Power Rock’ playlist and hit the open road.

What To Do?

There is no better feeling than discovering a corner of such a hugely popular country that is still relatively undiscovered. Gippsland is conveniently located between two of the most vital cities on the typical tourist trail so rather than lazily hopping on a Jet Star flight and missing it all, hire a van or car and take some time to really enjoy it for yourself. When you next find yourself sat around regaling tales of your adventures with your fellow travellers over a beaker or two of goon, you can pitch in with wise advice to visit this hidden gem that offers a real glimpse into all that is great and good about this awesome country! Quick Facts About Gippsland Gippsland was named in 1840 by Polish explorer, Paul Strzelecki, after Sir George Gipps, governor of New South Wales (1838–46). In 2006 Gippsland was reported to have a population of 239,647. A short journey away from Gippsland is Phillip Island – home to the Phillip Island Penguin Parade. At sunset, wild little penguins emerge from the sea and waddle across the beach to their sand dune burrows. Phillip Island is home to one of the largest little penguin colonies in the world. Around 1,699 Gippsland dairy farmers produce 1.9 billion litres of milk a year. Gippsland is usually split up into four or five main regions – West Gippsland, South Gippsland, the Latrobe Valley, East Gippsland and sometimes Central Gippsland.

Now this is where the fun starts. The sheer size of the region means that the scale of things you can experience is pretty dramatic. One day you can be skiing fresh powder on the Baw Baw Plateau, the next you can be scuba diving with sharks down in Wilsons Promontory. Take a few days to enjoy the delights of Lakes National Park and Gippsland Lakes before hopping back in your vehicle and making your way to Phillip Island.

Whilst In Gippsland... Who would have thought that you could ski in the country synonymous with barbeques, boardies and beaches? Every postcard, video or picture you see of Australia depicts bronzed beauties wearing very little lying around doing not much at all. However in the winter (July – September), 120km east of Melbourne, you can don your ski gear and hit the slopes at Mount Baw Baw Ski Resort. It might be relatively small compared to what you are used to back home but there are still 30 hectares of ski fields, six runs and a fantastic variety of cross-country trails to explore. There is camping available on the banks of the Aberfeldy River but seeing as you will be visiting in winter either ensure you have numerous Arctic-ready sleeping bags or take the hit and book into a cosy B&B close to the resort. 90 Mile Beach is exactly as it sounds only four miles longer, which makes it the third longest uninterrupted beach in the world. The 94-mile stretch of beach runs north-eastward from Port Albert all the way to the man-made channel at the resort of Lakes Entrance. The feisty waves of the Tasman Sea crash onto the shore close to the sandy dunes that separate numerous lakes and lagoons from the ocean. There are three main lakes that you must visit; Lake King, Lake Wellington and Lake Victoria. These all make up the astonishing areas of the Lakes National Park and the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park. The area is a nature lover’s idea of heaven with 300 native fauna species, 400 indigenous flora species and 20,000 water birds all calling it home. The area is also home to pods of Burrunan Dolphins. Days here can be filled with activities on land or water. Boating and fishing tend to be the major draws and even if you aren’t a fan of spending hours trying to ensnare an unsuspecting mullet, skipjack or bream, simply being on the water is experience enough. If you are looking for something a tad more energetic you can hire a canoe or kayak and give that upper body a work-out as you explore the tranquil waters. The park is a great spot for a walk and if you want to brave the cool water temperatures we recommend sticking to the sheltered lake shores. There are plenty of spots to park up your wheels and rest for the night situated between Paradise Beach and The Honeysuckles. All of which have great facilities and charge around $20 per night for an unpowered site or $27 if you want to give your van some juice. Not all the great scuba diving spots in Australia are located on the Great Barrier or the Ningaloo Reefs, in fact the waters of Victoria are considered one of the best kept secrets on the continent. The ocean surrounding Wilsons Promontory is protected by a national marine park and offers some truly outstanding diving, albeit in fairly bracing temperatures! There are dives sites that suit those who rival Jacques Cousteau in the adventurous stakes and then there are those more suited to beginners. Some of the best sites include Horn Point, Bareback Cove, Waterloo Bay, Forty Food Rocks and West Moncoeur Island. Waiting just below the surface are sheer walls, mysterious caves and spectacular sponge gardens all teeming with marine wildlife ranging from clown and angel fish to the slightly more intimidating sea snakes, eels, seals and sharks. There have been whales spotted in the area as well so keep your fingers crossed you are one of the lucky ones who gets to meet one face to face. There are a number of dive schools in the area all offering day trips or liveaboard experiences if you have a bit more time on your hands. Prices for these depend on the number of dives involved and the number of days that you spend aboard the boat so shop about to find something to suit you. If you wish, you can complete the Open Water Padi course here for around $600 (a little less pocket-friendly than in Queensland) for the two or three day course. Wilsons Promontory is one of Victoria’s most loved places and even above the water the scenery is awe-inspiring. Against a backdrop of imposing granite mountains lies open forest, sweeping beaches and dramatic coastline – all that fresh air will do wonders for those clogged up lungs thick with fumes from the city and its bars that you found so hard to leave.

PERTH MAP Perth, the capital of Western Australia, epitomizes the modern urban scene. It’s definitely isolated. But with its contemporary architecture, vibrant art scene, and countless restaurants capped off with funky bars and swish nightclubs, you won’t feel like you’ve staggered onto the scene of an old Western flick. And the locals here are a very nice complement with their friendliness, youthfulness and diversity. Perth’s CBD is all glass towers and wind tunnels, like any city. LANCELIN - W.A. Another thing which can be found in the waters of Lancelin are shipwrecks. There are 14 of them along the coastline for the experienced diver to explore. The wreck of the Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon), a Dutch East India Company ship which sank in 1656 is just one of them. For those who can’t go that far down, the reefs a little closer to the surface are enough to please any snorkeler. To the east of Lancelin there are impressive, brilliant-white sand dunes, which are around 2km long and ideal for sandboarding, dune buggies and quad bikes. From the top of these dunes you get spectacular views of Lancelin and its surrounding sand hills, coastline, islands and ocean. Just 4km away from the beach is Pinncales Desert. Here limestone rock monuments have risen out of the sandy dessert, creating a spectacular natural scene. Part of Nambung National Park, the Pinnacles offer the best views at sunrise and sunset.

Now the weather is getting a bit cooler in Perth, it might be time to think about heading up north to Lancelin. Lancelin is a small town just 127km away, and is the well-kept secret of surfers and keen fishers alike which is often overlooked by others. With a permanent population of around 750 which jumps to 2500 in the peak season of Christmas and New Year, Lancelin is clearly more than just a small town in Western Australia. Situated close to the Pinnacles, Yanchep National Park and New Norcia, Lancelin makes for a great base from which to wander out from. Just a few kilometres from the Indian Ocean Drive, it is also easily accessible. Located on the edge of Turquoise Bay, Lancelin offers both water and land based action. Warm in the summer and cold in the winter, the town experiences afternoon sea breezes, providing ideal conditions for water and wind sports. Surfers escape the crowds and kick it with great rides on a reef break at ‘Eddies’ or the beach break at ‘Back Break.’ A new kite surf school has opened in Lancelin providing beginner through to advanced lessons, plus kite and paddleboard hire. This makes Lancelin a one stop place to learn windsurfing, kite surfing, surfing plus sandboarding. Other activities you can have a go at are quad biking, trail biking, snorkelling, scuba diving, dune tours and of course fishing. There are plenty of fish swimming around Lancelin if you know where to look. Herring, Whiting, Tailor, Flounder, Flathead and even large King George Whiting can all be found. Did you understand that? Good, us neither, but that’s what we’ve been told and we’ve stuck it in for the few who can make fin or tail of it….sorry. If you’re more interested in the bigger kind of marine wildlife, sea lions can be found on Lancelin Island and always take an interest on what’s happening in the bay. Dolphins are also regular visitors to the bay and are keen to show off their daily catch to surrounding spectators.

In the summer (December to February) the average maximum temperature is 35 degrees Celsius, making sunbathing another activity you might like to partake in while visiting Lancelin. The beach along the coastline offers some perfect spots to work on your tan. Over the last few years tourism in Lancelin has really allowed the town to grow, and there are a plethora of restaurants and cafes and two pubs which cater for the visitors. Accommodation options vary from hostels and caravan parks to hotels, motels and cottages available to rent. Hostel prices start at around $27-$30 per night per person in a shared dorm, and then $70-$75 per night for a twin private room. A hotel will obviously cost a little more, in the region of $120+ per room per night. Caravan Park sites start from around $30 per night and are often situated in close proximity to the beach. With Lancelin just an hours’ drive away from Perth, there really is no reason not to visit this small hidden gem on the coastline of Western Australia.

Other Things To Do In North Western Australia Clamber through the rugged gorges of the Kalbarri National Park. Feed the dolphins by the beach at Monkey Mia. See the oldest living things in the world – the stromatolites of Hamelin Pool in Shark Bay. Go on a turtle, dugong and dolphin spotting cruise at Monkey Mia. Dive with whale sharks off the coast of Exmouth. Snorkel and dive to your heart’s content on the Ningaloo Reef. And, no, it’s not Uluru – it’s Mount Augustus in the Gascoyne region, just south of the Pilbara. See the staircase to the moon, as the full moon rises over tidal flats at Port Hedland or Broome. Take a camel ride across the world class Cable Beach at sunset. Discover thousands of rock carvings near Dampier (but be sure to pay respect and check with the local Indigenous communities - and never touch the paintings). See where the Outback meets the ocean with the red cliffs and white sand of Cape Leveque. Visit the Boab Prison Tree – 7km south of Derby. Go for a boat ride up Chamberlain Gorge in the million acre El Questro Wilderness Park. Take a scenic flight over the very stripey Bungle Bungles. See Australia’s biggest meteorite crater at Wolfe’s Creek. It’s nearly a kilometer wide and 50m deep. Hike to the stunning, multi-layered Mitchell Falls. Stay a safe distance from big teeth at the Wyndham Crocodile Farm. Walk through the narrow Tunnel Creek, surrounded by huge rock walls. Get on your walking boots, and take on Windjana Gorge. Spot wallabies, dingos, echidnas and snakes in Mirima National Park. Canoe down the Ord River from Kununurra. Check out the thousand islands and massive whirlpools of the Buccaneer Archipelago. Cruise on Lake Argyle, the picturesque man-made reservoir with 12 times the capacity of Sydney Harbour.

Cape Tribulation – sounds pretty dramatic doesn’t it? Well that’s because it is – but in a seriously good way. Cape Tribulation shows wildlife and nature in a manner you’ve never quite seen or experienced before. Rivers, rainforest’s and reefs are what make up this landscape, and if stunning natural views are what you’re after, you won’t be disappointed. Cape Tribulation is a headland in northern Queensland, just 110km north of Cairns. It was named by British navigator Lieutenant James Cook who in 1770, hit his ship on a reef at this point. Moving away from the coast to find deeper water, his ship The Endeavour hit another reef which almost sank the vessel. Cook therefore coined the name Cape Tribulation, ‘because here began all our troubles.’ Personally, we think it was just down to his crap sailing. However, Cook’s choice of name is ironic to say the least, as Cape Tribulation is probably one of the most relaxed and tranquil places in the world. Famed for its ancient rainforest, sandy shores and rugged mountains, this is a natural orgy for your senses.

Even though the rainfall can be worse than an Irish summer at times, BBM was lucky enough to escape the tears from above when we went during the wet season (great planning, we know). Something we were told too late was that during wet season (February-May), you should never go swimming in the sea due to the sizeable population of non-cuddly animals and creepy crawlies - especially at night. Now, we have never professed to be geniuses, but we will offer a bit of advice for you. Attempting to carry a female into the sea for a night time skinny dipping session and some type of drunken mating ritual will result in regret. Be sure not to mistake the poor girl’s screams of warning for flirtatious squeals of delight.

CAIRNS It’s hard to imagine such a place if you haven’t seen it yourself, Cape Tribulation is truly beautiful - but there is so much more to it than its appearance. As extraordinary an experience as the Great Barrier Reef is, we had already spent our well-borrowed money on a dive in Cairns. But fear not, we were left with a host of other tantalizing choices - Guided night walks, 4-wheel drive tours, horse riding, kayaking, jungle surfing, and crocodile tours are all available.

Some facts about Cape Tribulation: Cape Tribulation had a population of 101 following a census taken in 2006. Cape Tribulation covers 17,000 ha of the Daintree Nation Park. This region is one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world. Someone who calls this area home is the Cassowary – Australia’s heaviest flightless bird. For those who want to stay a little longer in Cape Tribulation, there are several accommodation options available. There is no need to pitch up a tent, do your business outdoors and share with the spiders if you don’t want to. Hostels cost around $30 per night per person in a dorm, and around $50 per night per person if you’re looking for a private cabin. Bed & breakfasts usually start from around $180 a night for a double bed during the dry season. These are normally really comfortable and offer a good selection of facilities, and are also a great way to meet the locals of Cape Trib. There is even the option of renting private guest houses, but we’re guessing these won’t be on everyone’s budget at around $250 a night. But if camping really is what you want to do, pitches start at approximately $40 a night. There are powered and non-powered sites available, and you’ll have access to a camp kitchen, which means boiling water, gas cook-tops, cold drinks, ice creams and access to a public telephone should a crocodile come into your tent.

The crazy array of wildlife, sea life and other life they have here are just one reason Cape Trib is part of the Daintree National Forest and a listed World Heritage area. With the Great Barrier Reef just 19 km in an easterly direction, this is the only place on earth where two World Heritage areas meet. It goes without saying that the Aussies are fiercely proud of this beautiful landscape and want to preserve it for as long as possible.

Daintree Rainforest is one of the most ancient in the world and there are guided tours and boardwalks which make it much easier to explore. If all that nature and outdoors has left you feeling a little inspired (and mad) you can climb Mt. Sorrow which is 850m high, or bathe in a freshwater swimming hole at Emmagen Creek, just north of Cape Trib. Whatever you choose to do, you’ll feel like you’re on location with ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.’ Just without all the Z-list ‘celebrities. And Bushtucker trials. And cameras. And Ant and Dec probably won’t be there either. Actually it won’t be anything like I’m A Celebrity, the only similarity is that you’ll be in Australian rainforest.

But don’t be fooled, Cape Trib isn’t only an endless forest where you’ll be expected to shit outdoors and live off the land. It’s actually a very popular day trip destination and is easily accessible by road or via boat down the Daintree River.

Out of pure curiosity and the chance to do something completely original while taking in all that Mother Nature has to offer, BBM chose Jungle Surfing. The staff are all very friendly and professional so you don’t ever feel uncomfortable as you dangle from high above the rainforest floor. Zip lines allow you to move up and down the trees to see the forest life like few other humans have the opportunity to do. It really reminded us of when we were monkeys before evolution kicked in. It’s a great adventure activity for all ages and no experience is required, so even you simpletons can do it!

Amongst the islands there is one in particular which will strike you, the astonishing and perhaps most commonly known of all Whitsunday landmarks - Whitehaven Beach. The spectacular views offered here are the ones seen on postcards and in travel brochures. Whitehaven is an idyllic wonderland with over 7km of pristine, brilliant white, silica sand that is so fine you can polish your silver with it. On top of this, the warm aqua water that surrounds it is crystal clear and perfect for an afternoon bathe. Other activities you can get involved with include fishing, jet sking, golf, kayaking, safaris, skydives, plane rides, rainforest tours and between June and September, a spot of whale watching. Finally, as the evening draws in, most sailing boats have their own bar or allow customers to bring their own alcohol. So for those of you who like to party, the night is only just beginning. Where better else to do it with such stunning surroundings? Whatever you choose to do on your trip to the Whitsundays be sure to clean up behind you and respect the surrounding wildlife – this natural wonderland will only be around for future generations to see if it is looked after properly now. Listing each one of the magnificent islands of the Whitsundays would be near enough impossible, so our best tip is just to get searching and find the perfect trip for you. The type of trips offered will vary dramatically but the options are vast. If you’re pushed for time, there are day cruises that will take you in and amongst the islands and give you some sunbathing time on the beaches, as well as meals throughout the day starting from around the $100 mark. However, here at BBM we highly recommend taking a few nights to get the full experience.

The Whitsunday Islands are a group of 74 continental islands situated off the central coast of Queensland. Just 900 km north of Brisbane and right in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, you’d be missing out if you don’t stop here when travelling the East Coast of Australia. The islands were discovered by British explorer Captain Cook on Whitsunday, which is how they were given their name. Fortunately, the islands avoided any major damage from Cyclone Yasi back in early 2011, meaning coastline dwellers could carry on as normal just two days after the worst had passed. Ocean Rafting, the first tour operator to venture out after the blow, reported no damage to coral and surprisingly good visibility in the water. The sand dunes in Hill Inlet at the very northern end of Whitehaven Beach were altered a little, but now look more beautiful than ever. It is this natural beauty that makes the Whitsunday Islands one of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia. You can reach the islands by boat from the mainland ports of Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Shute Harbour. If possible, try and make this an overnight trip as the experience of swimming in the calm waters of the

surrounding islands during the evening is not one you want to miss out on. We recommend organising this trip at least 48 hours before, as they can get booked up very quickly. Being on a boat, those who want to can sunbathe till their hearts and tans are content. But if you want to see the real wonders of the Whitsundays, you need to take the plunge and go scuba diving. There are around 60 companies who cater trips to the islands, and most of them offer 10m dives under the supervision of a trained and qualified diver. You will either start off on a small boat from which you are lowered from, or you will wade your way down from a bay. Once you reach the famous Great Barrier Reef any nerves or apprehension about breathing underwater will soon be forgotten. Here you can marvel at the eclectic selection of tropical fish, coral and other sea life, and experience underwater nature at its very best. If snorkelling is more your thing, you may not be able to dive as deep or for as long, but the sea life you spot will be just as compelling. Either way it will soon become apparent why the world’s largest living structure is World Heritage listed and popular with so many all around the globe.

Different companies will offer different accommodation options, so if you shop around you will certainly find something that suits your needs. While most of the Whitsunday Islands are deserted, eight of them offer accommodation. Some boat trips will drop you off at a resort while others allow you to sleep right on board - wobbly but exciting. You can travel on anything from a 70ft catamaran to an old-school sailboat, so there is something available for every price budget. These normally start off at around $300 per person for a three day trip, and usually include meals, accommodation and a scuba diving session.

Lastly, it is recommended that you book your trip in the summer months (October – February) to miss out on the potential rain which is often experienced during the wet season - sitting on the deck in the midst of a storm and getting drenched is not really our idea of fun, but if it’s yours, then you go for it. The success of last years Outlook paid off when the UK Festival Awards crowned us “BEST OVERSEAS FESTIVAL”. EP Reviews Haim Forever Having toured with their parents for the last ten years, sisters Este, Danielle and Alana have finally decided to go it alone. After performing Motown and classic rock at various charity gigs and street fairs across California, they’ve now taken to writing their own material away from mum and dad under the name of Haim. Their debut EP Forever is the first glimpse of what to expect from the band, and after a critically acclaimed live performance at this years SXSW Festival in the US, they’ve already started turning heads.

into Detroit techno territory, fusing chopped piano figures to stuttering beats. The second is a far darker mix courtesy of Barfod’s FoF labelmate Shlohmo. Its skewed vocals, heavy bass weight and murky, smoke-riddled production giving ‘Broken Glass’ a sound not far removed from the witch house school of thought. Neither remix, however, can compare to Barfod’s delicate original, and that’s high praise in itself. If Barfod can match the excitement of this preceding single across a full-length record, we could be in for something very special indeed. By Alex Cull

Opening track ‘Better Off’ introduces the audience to the sisters singing in beautiful harmony and reflects a similar tone to the sounds of First Aid Kit’s latest album The Lion’s Roar. However, it soon becomes apparent that Haim are much more than another clichéd, all girl folk band. The punching drums that follow bring about a whole different feel to the track, and suddenly the listener is presented with a variety of smooth grooves that would normally be found filed under the R&B section.

Jubei Featuring Flowdan ‘Say Nothin’ One of the rising stars of Drum & Bass, Jubei has been churning out singles for the pioneering D&B label Metalheadz since 2010, and continuing with his productive streak he has teamed up with Roll Deep’s Flowdan for a brand new track entitled ‘Say Nothin.’ Jubei lays down a grimy, minimalistic dubstep beat scattered with eerie sound effects that emerge from the distance as Flowdan raps in his distinctive monotone about youth gang troubles and suicide.

Considering Forever only has three tracks on it, it’s an impressive selection that will keep you listening over and over. At times sounding like an 80s movie soundtrack, you’ll instantly be pleased by the groups ability to write catchy hooks that lodge themselves firmly in your head and keep your foot tapping for hours. Third track ‘Go Slow’ builds to a Cyndi Lauper sounding chorus that is sickly sweet, but leaves you with a guilty craving for more. It’s incredibly infectious. Haim are easily one of the most unique acts around at the moment thanks to their skillful ability to blend two genres that would normally be a million miles apart and with this release, the sisters from America have already shown us that they are more than capably of paving their own way. Expect to hear a lot more from the three-piece after what is set to be a fantastic UK performance at Brighton’s Great Escape Festival in May, as well as a handful of gigs in the capital. Album Reviews Norah Jones – ‘Little Broken Hearts’

The track features a rather silly black and white video that is unfortunately not nearly as profound as it hopes to be. The video though, replete with shots of ugly tower blocks and hooded youths chasing down an ill-fated youngster, mirrors the lyrical message and general vibe of the song, and there are probably few choruses more unconventional and hard-hitting than ‘Suicide, suicide. There’s your alibi, suicide.’

The serenely soulful, multi-Grammy award winning American songstress Norah Jones is back with her 5th studio album - ‘Little Broken Hearts.’ Fresh from her work on the critically acclaimed superstar collaboration ‘ROME,’ Norah has acquired the services of one Brian ‘Danger Mouse’ Burton, one half of the genius that is ‘Gnarls Barkley,’ for production duties on what is one of her most accomplished albums to date.

Some kudos must go to Jubei and Flowdan for attempting to tackle the problem of youth gang violence and bullying, and the track holds together pretty well as a piece of Drum & Bass music, with its moody, bass heavy sonics and stirring message. ‘Say Nothin’ will no doubt go down well with the D&B underground, and of course for those with a particular fondness for Jubei or Flowdan. Don’t expect it to make much of a ripple on the popular charts however.

Norah surprises many with a breakaway from her traditional roots to deliver her first heavy rock album, full of anger, frustration and primal rage...haha nah, although it’s a development from her traditional sound, with a strong theme of resentment, it’s still Norah Jones- a sweet, voluptuously soul jazz sound that whisks you away to a more tranquil setting, albeit this time with dark undertones on a record that is clearly titled for a reason.

‘Say Nothin’ is the first single from Jubei’s upcoming new album and is out on April 30th.

Opening track ‘Good Morning’ is fantastic, a mellifluous masterpiece that’s swaying groove carries the sensation of waking up and watching the sunrise on a boat on far away ocean. Very Morcheeba, very good, but with a bittersweet lyric. ‘Say Goodbye’ has the heavy hand of Danger Mouse, the distinct sound his production duties brought to ‘ROME’ ‘Gorillaz’ and his other act ‘ Broken Bells’ are clearly apparent on this hook laden, radio friendly summer drenched track.

Tomas Barfod – Broken Glass Tomas Barfod - drummer and producer for Danish electronic groups WhoMadeWho and Filur – has certainly worked in a diverse array of styles. Across the last ten years, he’s produced everything from J-pop to ambient techno, while also remixing established acts from Shakira to Franz Ferdinand and being released on tastemaker dance labels Kitsuné and Kompakt. His is a portfolio as eclectic as it is exciting. It’s unsurprising then that Broken Glass – the first single from his upcoming solo album Salton Sea – catches you off guard stylistically as soon its ethereal guitar lines come serenely dribbling across the ether. Slowly building to a lovingly crafted climax of warm synths, pulsating beats and emotive, sampled vocals, it’s an affecting listen that’s a promising sign of things to come.

Alex Clare ‘Too Close’

A slow-burning techno number perfectly suited to dancing the night away, B-side ‘Beach Party’ couldn’t be more aptly named. It’s a rousing enough tune, even if it can’t quite compare to the more impactful ‘Broken Glass’.

Twenty-five year-old Londoner Alex Clare is the latest heavily touted name in the seemingly endless line of singers that come out of England’s capital city looking to make a big splash in the music industry.

The EP is nicely rounded out by two remixes of its title track. The first, by German house/techno producer Jacob Korn (who’s of no affiliation to the nu-metal juggernauts), is a pleasant enough reworking; it takes the original

‘Happy Pills,’ her latest single, is a highlight, a subtle slice of infectious jazzpop, showing a mainstream side of Norah we’ve never heard before. With a great video to match (in which she kills her lover, alright we get it Norah), there is no hiding the rich vein of angst and betrayal that runs through the core of the album’s twelve tracks. Penultimate song ‘Miriam’ is a masterpiece, elements of Kate Bush intertwined with a Del Rey drawl that’s light and fluffy one moment before revealing its ‘bottom of a bottle’ underside. It’s a great example of the album as a whole, yes it has everything you know, love and expect from Norah Jones but with a dark twist, beautifully realized by Danger Mouse’s expertly subtle production. It is well documented that Adele’s mega selling ‘21’ was written as a result of a breakup, producing some of the biggest songs of the last ten years. It seems these days that is a formula for success, as Norah’s unlikely turn on ‘Little Broken Hearts’ sees her produce arguably her best work to date, an album that should see her open up to an even wider audience. Lana Del Rey and co, watch your back, the master of the beautifully broken ballad is back to reclaim her throne. By James Stapleton

‘Too Close’ is the latest offering from the man who once reportedly dated the late Amy Winehouse and like she was, is signed to Island Records. The song has already seen considerable chart success in both the UK and in the States, not hindered by its use in a Microsoft Internet Explorer commercial. However, taken on purely artistic and not commercial viability the song is a still major success and has won the approval of many, despite their previous genre preferences. Clare has an impressive, soulful voice that could even remain captivating in a different setting. The thick, dubstep style beats and modern production techniques on ‘Too Close’ don’t conventionally marry up however blending his soulful voice over this bass heavy track, we’re presented by a dramatic track that screams emotion and club vibes coherently. After the success and the breath of fresh air that Alex Clare has brought to the table, we’re excited to see if this is just a one hit wonder situation or whether he’ll be able to pull it out of the bag in releases to come. ‘Too Close’ is available now and Clare is due to release a full-length album in summer 2012. MUSIC NEWS that make it an enjoyable listen from start to finish, and for that we have Ricky Fabulous and the wonderfully monikered ‘DJ Modest.’ The lead single is ‘Stormbird,’ a driving, head bopping indie-dance number that will give you an indication of if this band is for you, but we’re fairly confident that there will be enough in there for you to want to listen more. ‘Reach for the Bottle’ is reminiscent of Moloko, while ‘Wasted Time’ has a Nine Inch Nails (thanks to its moody synth) feeling to it; ‘Cloverleaf’ brings you elements of ‘Portishead.’ It’s a dark album with beams of sunlight hidden beneath its wonderfully rich exterior and we cannot recommend it enough. Santigold - Master of My Make Believe

‘Master of My Make Believe’ is bigger, louder, ‘beatier’ and full of the swagger that made people sit up and take notice back in 2008. As before, there are obvious comparisons with ‘M.I.A’ in terms of musical style - it’s loud, distinctive and has the potential to grab your eardrums and shake them about a bit. Navigating the waters between shouty riff-based tracks, delicate tunes and some great pop melodies is a trick which does take some practice, but having had a few years to do this, and working with such musical luminaries as The Beastie Boys, Basement Jaxx and comedy geniuses ‘The Lonely Island,’ means she’s certainly refined her sound. Mixing the best elements of funk, pop, dub and rock, the whole album leads you from start to finish with the effortless panache of an excitable child who’s got something great to show off and is actually very good at it. Every track has a part of it that makes it a worthwhile listen, whether it’s the groove-laden (‘Go!’, ‘Disparate Youth’, ‘Big Mouth’), the softer (‘This Isn’t Our Parade’, ‘The Riots Gone’), or the rockier (God From The Machine, The Keepers’). Having been four years in the making, you almost want it to be more, but that would be harsh on what are undoubtedly 11 fantastic tracks that will help us into summer with consummate ease. First appearing on the scene with 2010’s ‘The Liberty EP’ and the LP ‘270 Stories, Belleruche have been slowly garnering critical acclaim for their minimalist electro sound. Musically, they’re cousins of the Dum Dum girls: defined sounds with their own sense of production.

New album ‘Rollerchain’ is a small departure from the previous sounds, a case of evolution in action. The production values have definitely increased, but this means you feel the absence of sounds much more keenly, and it’s enabled them to showcase a wider range of styles. Kathrin deBoer’s soul-style vocals vary between Moloko, Lou Rhodes (Lamb) and Beth Gibbons with a hint of Stevie Nicks; it’s a versatile mix, and she’s got total control of what she’s singing and uses her voice to greater effect than on their initial releases. Of course, without the backing we have nothing, and throughout ‘Rollerchain’ we have strong evidence that it’s not just deBoer that has been diligently evolving her sound. Although there is a strong sense of identity throughout the album thanks to great production, it’s the ido-syncracies in each song

One of the Mistresses of Musical Mastery returns with her first material since 2008’s (near) eponymous debut. It’s fair to say that when she first hit the scene, Santigold turned more than a few heads. Her vibrant, funk-filled songs were inescapable, turning up on various adverts around the place; always followed by a ‘who was that?’ and a rush to try and find out.

INTERVIEWS: Reef

This is Reef’s first time touring in Australia for 12 years – are you excited to get back there? Any shows that you are particularly excited about playing? I’m pretty excited about going to Perth actually – I have really good memories of that from the last time. I met a really nice guy one day when I was out in the water, we got chatting, he came to a gig and we decided to hire a car and go surfing down in Margaret River, a place called Lefties? It was brilliant mate. So amazing. I saw a whale while I was surfing – that was lush. We were only down there a couple of days but the surfing was awesome. I hope I get to do some surfing when we’re over there...we’ll see. I’ve been surfing here a bit recently so I’ve got it in my blood. As a band we spent quite a lot of time in Australia; Avalon Beach, the northern beaches in Sydney, Bells Beach on the Great Ocean Road. Australia is just the perfect place to tour if you’re a surfer and you’ve got time off. Frazer Island was great too. A mate and I blagged a Land Rover and camped on the beach in bivvy bags, I remember popping my head out and being surrounded by dingoes. Last time you were here you famously offended ‘national treasure’ Daryl Somers on his show “Hey, Hey it’s Saturday” – can you tell us a little about that? Ha ha – I forgot about that, it was so good! The show is like the equivalent of Noel Edmonds’ House Party. This dude was so cheesy. There was a guy on the show called Red Spider or something like that and it turned out that his job was just to be nasty to people. There were these two twin girls who were dancing on the show and he was being really mean to them – calling them ‘freaks of nature’. We were watching it backstage and not digging it at all. It was unnecessary, a bit much you know.

West Country boys Reef, dominated the charts and the brains of a whole generation with their rock music and in particular their smash hit track ‘Place Your Hands’ which still has fists pumping to this day. The laid back lads are commemorating ten years of music-making with an incredible box set compiling all of their albums, photographs and a DVD. They are currently preparing to embark on their first tour of Australia in 12 years, playing throughout June in Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. BBM’s Amy Baker chatted with bass player, Jack Bessant about his memories of Australia from his last visit and what he looking forward to most about being back on the road with the boys... What’s up? What are you up to at the moment? I’m just at home in Cheddar in the West Country of England. Been chilling out and enjoying the beautiful sunshine. I was down at the skate park today, which was sweet. I’ve been playing a lot as well, I’m just loving playing music at the moment.

of us that are all in there. There are 9 albums, a DVD and a picture book. It’s all in a nice box the same shape as our logo. It’s good to have a collection of everything that we’ve done all in one place rather than just loads of VHS tapes piled up everywhere! In a slow, progressive way, we’ve all individually grown, moved on. I’ve had the chance to travel. When I see the dates that we were together, it’s crazy that it was so long ago – where has that time gone? You and Gary have a project StringerBessant – will you be playing any of your stuff at the Reef gigs or playing any of your own when you’re over here? It’d be great to play a few gigs when we’re over there this time but I’m not sure we’ll have the chance. I really enjoy StringerBessant. ‘Yard’ our album sounds lovely and we’re in the process of writing another album at the moment. We’d love to go to Australia and tour as StringerBessant so hopefully that might happen. We’ve been playing a few gigs in the UK. Gary has a VW Camper van so we just put our gear and our surfboards in that and go and play nice low key gigs to chilled out crowds - I like those kind of gigs. We’re playing at Surf Experience Festival in Portugal in May, that’ll be cool What can people coming along to the Reef shows expect? A really heavy rock band, moody blues, lovely heavy sounds. An hour and a half of that rattling around in your head has got to be fun right? People should enjoy it. What’s next for Reef after you finish the tour? At the moment there are no plans to record an album. We used to all live together and that made it easy to jam and write. It’s harder to do that when you’re not in the same place. We’re all a bit older now, we have families, it’s a shame but it’s harder to get together to jam. Maybe when we’re away we’ll have some time.

The show is live and we’d sound checked a sweet ballad but we decided we’d do a proper heavy punk rock song instead and we ended up smashing the set up a bit. It was funny, the cameramen were laughing and loving it and so were the audience. Daryl Somers was shouting at the audience to stop cheering and telling them all to boo us! I don’t think any act was allowed to perform live again after that. Ha ha. When we played that show, hardly anyone knew us in Australia, after that people were stopping us in the street and telling us they had seen us on the show.

Reef were together for 10 years – is there a secret to staying mates and staying together so long? Nah. Not at all. We’re just mates who work well together. Everyone’s good at their individual instruments and we’re all different characters. We’ve written some good stuff that people seem to enjoy, if they weren’t enjoying it we’d back off but whilst people like it and we enjoy it, we’ll keep doing it. Tell us a little about the box set that you are releasing... It’s really well put together. We’ve worked with the designer, Richard Bull before; he’s done quite a lot of our artwork. He’s got so many good pictures

We’ve all got our own side projects as well. We’re playing the Godney Gathering in the West Country this summer. We’ve got a nice little summer ahead of us, touring, a few cool gigs, it’s going to be a good one. By Amy Baker

The Darkness means three words in the language of BBMBRITISH. GLAM. ROCK. This band has been through it all over the past

decade, with over a million ‘quadruple platinum’ album sales, rehab and a reformation. Having scooped up Brit Awards, Kerrang! Awards and winning the VH1 ‘The 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs’ with ‘I Believe in a Thing Called Love,’ it seemed impossible for the band to not return to the world of longhaired glitter rock with a vengeance. BBM’s Frankie Salt caught up with lead singer Justin Hawkins ahead of their Australian tour.. Good evening or should I say Good morning to you Justin, how are you doing? Not bad, not bad at all thanks for asking. And yourself? Yeah real good thanks. How are things back in the UK? Yeah I’m in my house in Norfolk, East Anglia and of course it’s pissing it down with rain! So you lot over in Australia definitely are not missing out! Where are you from then? Manchester is that? (Laughing) More Derbyshire way but not too far. So how have things been for you guys since New Year? Things have been great, been awesome. Really successful tour of the U.S, which was completely sold out. Great things happened throughout the tour. We did the whole Superbowl thing and it was just amazing to see and feel such a buzz about the band after such a long time. America just accepted us again, which was great after the split, maybe they just didn’t realize we had split ha-ha. We just fell straight back into the whole thing and it felt right. You’ve had such a great reception coming back. How long did you guys actually split for? About six years actually. My brother and I had a massive falling out and I think becoming a dad played a part in that also. But then we became friends again, then we became brothers again which was cool and it evolved naturally from there. As soon as we started getting on with each other again, it became obvious we should meet up with the other guys and see if they feel the same. It felt right. We would never do this for the sake of it now. At the end of the original second album campaign, the fun element had gone and that was the main thing of what we do. There was no way of getting that back and we had to give the band up which was gutting. So now it’s so important that we are back and having fun, making the audience feel good too which is the main aim for us. Well, I remember seeing you play when I was a wee teen back at Leeds Festival. The fun element was striking on stage and your show was talked about for days after, just for being such a different act there at the festival. You guys were obviously having the best time in the world, how do you think the band has changed since then? Obviously the band and your music has evolved… Well I actually believe that we are a lot better now. We were just sat having a drink in the Hard Rock Café when we were in America and they started playing old rock videos of bands. They were playing videos from 2004, so we were watching ourselves and we looked static. At the time you think you’re going for it, but then when you watch back you realize that you probably weren’t giving it your all. Nowadays, we mean serious business, we’re not battling with absolutely raging hangovers and we are just generally a lot fitter (laughing). We used to call our gigs “medical miracles”. And they were. We used to spend the first two songs sweating out the hangovers and then it was all about just getting through it. It’s just not like that nowadays. Ha-ha, so you lot are much better behaved now? (Laughing) yeah, in some ways!

The Darkness So if you weren’t making music nowadays, what do you think you would be doing? What have you been up to for the last six years? Were you still playing and producing music? Yeah, I was part of a band in the Darkness gap. My passion has always been and will always be to make music. We made three albums during that time and then I coproduced the new Darkness album. The band will always come first.

grew up there until I was 3. Then we moved into the real countryside. We were real country bumpkins. We lived in a caravan until we could afford to move into the house that was being built. It was a six-mile bus ride to primary school, we were real country folk and then we got to a point where the rural upbringing wasn’t really working as we were getting bullied. Social skills were difficult as we were so far from other kids. So we moved more into the town and we started playing music.

Yeah, that’s what shines through on the stage for your fans. So you’re coming over to Australia soon? Yeah very soon, I’ve just had my first tanning session. Bring it on. (laughing)

What’s coming up for you guys then? Australia is quickly closing in…. We come over in May and we are only doing a short tour. I genuinely wish we were coming over for much longer, it seems so rushed. We are missing out

So what music influenced you the most when you were younger? My parents were always big music fans. I can pretty much say that the basics of my music collection was theirs. From Pink Floyd to everything that was cool throughout that era. They had guitars, which was enough to be around when we were younger. They were also big party animals. I can always remember them having parties and playing music really loud so we couldn’t get sleep. I think that influenced more than they ever thought it would!

So where abouts did you grow up in the UK? We basically grew up…oh oh my one-year-old is tapping me ha-ha! (So that’s what you have been up to since the band split). We were born in Surrey and

on going to Perth and I love that place. We will be back again as soon as we can though. Australia has always been so good to us.

Sui Zhen

As far as DIY artists go, Becky Freeman a.k.a ‘Sui Zhen’, has been tinkering and tailoring her debut album for a couple of years now. She’s ready and determined to get her heart into swing and her teeth dug straight into the behind of the notorious music industry indefinite. While waiting patiently and biding her time among the ranks of the Red Bull Academy, Becky has curated and honed her skills as a musician and a performer. With her debut album ‘Two Seas’ just on the horizon only time will tell how her vessel will hold out. So you were born in Sydney and moved to Melbourne? Yeah I mean I’ve lived in Sydney for most of my life and then I moved to Melbourne just last year. And Sui Zhen is your Chinese name? Yeah It’s my middle name and basically my cousins and my siblings each have a name that have the Sui prefix. And mine is Sui Zhen and my sister is Sui Ann and so on. I decided to use mine for my music and art because otherwise, I don’t know what I’d use it for, it would just be sitting there in my passport unused.

Sydney four-piece The Jezabels have moved to London as things heat up for them in the northern hemisphere. Fresh off from winning the 7th Australian Music Prize, their debut album ‘Prisoner’ released in 2011 won the Album of the Year at the Rolling Stone Awards and has since gone gold. Having just toured around Europe, they now have the USA and Canada in their eye-line, followed by an array of summer festivals in Europe and the USA, as well as Hop Farm Festival in Kent and Kinross’ T In The Park this July in the UK. BBM’s Hannah Kurzawski talks to guitarist Samuel Lockwood about leaving Australia, crazy music videos, Boris bikes and which festivals The Jezabels are getting excited about. How are you today and where are you right now? I’m quite well and I am in Aldgate in London. For the people out there who don’t know The Jezabels, what three words do you think best describe the band? It’s always hard talking about yourself but I think: Intense, loud, musical. And what about your music? How would you describe that? Some people have said it’s quite hard to pin down and put into a genre. It’s hard to say, I don’t know. We’ve coined the word ‘Intense Indie’ which is something that we like to say. But because all four of us in the band are from different backgrounds we sort of came together and create music that doesn’t really sound like anything. It’s just like pop, post-rock pop I think, with a female vocalist who is very theatrical and it’s sort of weird, it’s like a hybrid I guess. It’s hard to explain it. How did the name The Jezabels come about? Is there any meaning behind it or is it just a name? Hayley I think wanted to be called The Jezabels, and we we’re like ‘yeah that’s pretty cool but we’ll try something else,’ because we thought it was a bit weird. But then we sort of came back to it and we thought it was really cool. You need a weird name to stick out so I think it’s actually done us really well.

I watched the stop motion of the new single little frog. I thought it was well made. So music isn’t your only interest, what other creative processes do you dabble in? Filmmaking is a big interest of mine. I work as a creative producer part time for a channel that does documentaries on creative processes of other artists and designers. I’m really interested in documentary and filmmaking; so far I’m just doing that as a kind of a part time job, which is pretty tough, also, its quite an involved type of work. So the new album Two Seas is out on the 4th of May, how has the production of the album progressed? It has progressed a lot. I wrote the songs in 2009, I was tracking my own demos at home, I had a really nice mic and I was like - recording lots of guitar parts and different parts and then toward the end of the year I was sending those tracks to a producer who is from Australia, but he was based in Berlin at the time so we had this online collaboration where I was sending him all these tracks. They were kind of like ingredients, he was basically taking them and arranging them into like a… basically the traditional idea of what an arranger would be. As well as production parts and he was performing a bit on it too; his name is Tony Dupe. Then in 2010 I had the Red Bull Music Academy, followed by a whole load of travelling, which gave me a bit of perspective on certain songs and what I wanted the album to overall sound like. So I ended up re-tracking some vocals that year. By that time Tony had returned to Australia and rented out this really nice church in the south coast, New South Wales, where I was able to just sing, really nice with the natural reverb, just redo some of the vocals there and by the end of that year, 2011 that’s when it kind of finished up and that’s when I felt like it was a finished product, ready to start packaging up I guess. Is it a concept album? Is there an overarching story, because Two Seas sounds like there’s something underneath… It was a literal translation of Bahrain, which is where I spent some time in 2010 because my stepmother, my father’s second wife actually, is living there and working there, and I just spent two months with her. She’s family and she’s quite isolated out there and I was also isolating myself being there. I thought it was an appropriate name for the album because a lot of it came together with me moving to different spaces and relationships. And a lot of it was about the movement between home and a new place, just that travelling aspect between somewhere that was familiar and somewhere that’s really far which is kind of a big thing for a lot of the songs. Yeah I think that is the over arching theme, leaving familiar places or wanting to leave familiar places to experience something new or the adverse. You know being in a new foreign situation and wanting to be back home erm its that kind of feeling. I set out to write it as an album that was full of songs that could be performed solo or with a band. I really set out to write out strong songs that id borrowed from classic song structures or techniques that I’d noticed singers from the sixties and seventies folky kind of scene that I liked. Kind of trying to just focus on writing a strong songs before performing them. And also the same time that Two Seas is coming out you also have the E.P with your friend, Fox and Sui? That was meant to come out before this album, it was meant to be out already in March, but basically we kind of got it vinyl pressed and the vinyl

Are there any home comforts that you miss being over here, any Australian things that we don’t have? London is such a beautiful city and as it comes into summer there is nothing better. We were riding on those Boris bikes around London yesterday and they are just so great. I think there are enough good things to make you not think about home, at least at the start. I think maybe what people travel to Australia for is how clean the air is. We toured around Europe and it was just so hazy, I don’t know, you couldn’t really see the horizon. I just miss in Australia how beautifully clear the air is and how there’s not much litter anywhere and it’s just clean. I miss that, I miss the natural side of Australia.

Do you think that working with collaborations and collectives furthers your knowledge and broadens your sound as a musician? Yeah definitely I think before you can work in collectives and collaborations you really need to be comfortable in yourself. Because if your not, it can be just a little weird, if your not ready for it. If your ready to let someone else take the lead and just follow them or vice versa, be the one leading other people and collaborations, you compromise control but that doesn’t mean you have to compromise the quality. What you’re working on becomes the product of two or three or how ever many people who are involved rather than just one. I think there’s some people that go into those situations, forget that its about what happens to the chemistry between the collective rather than… they try and lead too much. I learned lot of that, collaborating at the Redbull academy. I went through that and then afterwards if felt really comfortable. I had my own style, but I knew how it might fit in with other people. I was also, after I came back, much better at leading my band. Previously, as a singer song writer, you put a band together for some shows and you have that whole thing of feeling bad for telling them what to play or not giving them creative freedom, but that’s kind of what their there for, to play for your songs so you have to be clear about what they want. There are different situations, where collaboration… there is room for it and there’s other situations you really need one strong voice leading; I definitely run a lot in both situations. How do you create and curate your sound? Its quite intuitive; In the last few years I’ve become more refined in my music taste or I’ve become a lot more critical. I’ve tried hard to pick things that are going to influence me in the right way or really consider the music I’m listening to around the time I’m writing and make sure its what I want to be influenced by. So that means when I go to write music, I’m just pulling together these things that I’ve absorbed, throughout the music that I’ve been listening to as well as being inventive. I think its because I listen to different types of music across all genres, in my mind, I don’t break it up into different genres. I just think that’s a good songwriter or has an interesting voice. Do you think that the line between different mediums has blurred, do you consider your self a musician or an artists? Yeah it has blurred, I think it’s important to focus and not spread yourself to thin amongst too many different avenues, which I might have done previously and still do from time to time. I think I’d call myself a musician, but then sometimes I’m like ‘artist’ because I do visual art and film. Its coming from the same place, and the process is similar, but the industry around those mediums is different. Sometimes you don’t even have enough energy to really work on being a musician in the industry; that can be enough. By Ash Moore

You’ve just said that you’ve just been touring around Europe. Was there one city that you felt you really connected best with or any place that stood out for you? I think anywhere in Germany. Hamburg is a beautiful city, I think that is somewhere I could spend a lot more time. I really like Hamburg. Copenhagen is pretty cool. They actually are quite close to each other so maybe that’s a little area to live. It would be Berlin, Hamburg or Copenhagen I think. They’re the best places we’ve been to. From going to all these cities and experiencing all these different cultures, do you future music from The Jezabels will be influenced by that at all or do you think you’ll stick to what you’re doing now? I think everyone’s a sponge, they soak up whatever they see, whenever they need to get a kick out of them they do. We’re being supported by cool bands and we’ve met some really nice people, and we’re seeing things that we wouldn’t have seen if we were in Australia, so maybe hopefully our music grows a bit. I think that’s the main thing, I think it’s more subtle, the differences. You might hear something this cool band does and try and do that, or hear a band that you wouldn’t have heard in Australia, who sound a lot less restrained and are doing weird things. So I think that will be the main effect on what we’re doing. Some of your tracks have music videos to go along with them. What’s the best location that you’ve filmed a music video in? We filmed a lot of them in my house in Sydney. ‘Easy to Love’ we filmed in my friend’s bedroom on the top level of our house in Sydney. I forgot to ask my flatmate, it’s my good friend Alex. We got there and were like ‘Oh man sorry we didn’t ask you, but can we use your room?’ And luckily he’s one of those people who lives without many objects. He had a bed and a bookshelf; he lives lightly so we could move it out pretty easily. I think that is actually my favourite film clip of ours because it’s so simple. It’s cool.

The Darkness We’ve heard that you’re now officially based in London for a bit, what was the main reason for choosing London and for swapping it with the sunny east coast of Australia? Basically we’ve played in Australia for the last three or four years just nonstop, show after show, everywhere. We’re at the stage now where we can’t really keep doing that otherwise people will get quite sick of us. We had the alternative of northern hemisphere touring, so to America, Europe and the UK, and instead of flying from Australia repeatedly we thought it makes more sense to temporarily set up somewhere. So for the last six months we’ve just been coming back to an apartment in Aldgate, which is where we are now in between tours, and then we head out on the road again, but I think for the second half of the year we might actually find a house somewhere. We’re going to be doing festivals and long touring later in the year so that’s why. It’s a lot cheaper than flying from Australia, flying is so expensive these days.

is getting pressed in the US and the guy that we are pressing it with has just gone AWOL. And we’ve been waiting for ages and we’ve just got the test pressing just recently after not hearing from him for a while and the whole kind of release was based around the vinyl E.P. We just really wanted to release it on vinyl and we’ve just been waiting for the actual product before we can now release it but its just been delayed so I guess that will come out after Two Seas now, so that’s just another fun project.

If you could film anywhere in the world, where would it be? In your friend’s bedroom again? Yeah probably. It means I could hang out with him again. Anywhere. I think a film clip with the Northern Lights behind you would be pretty cool, I don’t think that’s ever been done before. So don’t tell anyone that idea, maybe we’ll do it next film clip. Something like really expensive, like on top of a cliff. Some people have done it skydiving, that’s pretty cool. Some people have some pretty crazy ideas, but they’re the ones that get remembered. Exactly. In space - that would be cool. And obviously you won the 7th Australian Music Prize, how did that feel? Great. I didn’t expect it obviously. We were going up against people like Gotye, who had a really successful and well received album. We we’re over here when we got the message in the middle of the night, I woke up to it. I think it’s probably the most important thing you can win in Australia so I can probably say we’re stoked. It means so much, you can’t really say much about it, it’s just really good. You’ve played a lot of festivals both in Australia and abroad. Are there any that stand out above the rest or any that are your particular favourites? We’ve done Electric Picnic in Ireland, that was amazing. In Australia there’s a small festival called Peats Ridge, which is really cool because it’s sustainable and has a really good ideology behind it. I like Falls Festival a lot, one of the ones we did in Australia, that was really nice.

The Jezeb e l s And of the festivals that you’re playing this summer, which ones are you most looking forward to? The Hop Farm Festival in Kent because that line up is pretty amazing. I actually posted that on Facebook because people don’t really know what I’m doing over here, back in Australia. I posted a photo of the line up and they just couldn’t believe it. We’re like quite high up as well, so that’s pretty cool. It’s just amazing. Whilst you’re over here do you get a chance to keep up with the music from back home? Are there any bands we should look for? A band called Sparkadia is really cool, but they are established. There is this band called Sleepy Hands that’s really cool. That’s a good recommendation. What is next for The Jezables? Just touring. We’re going to be touring forever. We’re back recording sometime next year so we’re just sorting that out at the moment actually. By Hannah Kurzawski

INTERVIEWS: Recently releasing his third solo studio album, Kasper Bjorke has been around for the duration creating the sounds of Disco to New Wave, Techno to House tracks. After circling the world on tour numerous times, Kasper is taking a back seat when it comes to playing live, but is in the driving seat to find new hot musical talent. Recently stumbling across Reptile Youth and watching them grow as producers, Bjorke is also channeling his focus and drive as manager of Trentemoller. The Danish producer, influential figure throughout the European music scene and DJ, chats with BBM’s Frankie Salt about his new album, what makes his musical heart beat and how he still remembers the first time he heard the tracks which gave him goose bumps. Hello Kasper, how are you today? I’m very good thank you, I’m still waking up a little. It’s 11am. I’m heading to Paris tomorrow. Where are you in the world right now? I’m over in Copenhagen this morning. What has been your favourite moment of 2012 so far? Definitely finishing the album. When you finally finish a project after all the work and the arguments and it finally comes together, there is no better feeling. So it has been worth all of the blood sweat and tears in the end then Kasper? Yes for sure. I’m very proud to have created the album. Well previously you have created four albums, which won you awards as part of Filir, and you did some great tour dates too - why did you want to do solo stuff? I think it was important at the time when we started to want to do music differently. We had done so much together for so long that it was important to also stand on our own two legs. It was a natural development. What inspired you at first to make music? I grew up in a very small town in the countryside, only 50,000 people. I was heading into Copenhagen to buy vinyl. I was very much into hip-hop, but then I discovered electronic nightclubs and festivals as they were very accessible, and it inspired me. We started to play around with music, none of my friends had done it before but we quickly got into it.. Do you remember the first ever track that gave you goose bumps? This is a very hard question. I remember Public Enemy’s first album. I think it just sounded so new and different. There were so many crazy lyrics and that kind of freaked me out and got me very excited. Public Enemy definitely did something to my perception of music. Do you remember the sound of your first ever track you made yourself? Yeah it was like an electro trashy house track back in 2004. It was about these two kids in Copenhagen. I was really scared of them in a way. They were just out of high school. They were icons over there in the nightclub scene. They looked like a pair of twins and they did a lot of drugs in the night

scene, but were much younger than us. I called the track ‘The Kids Are Going Down’ and [it] was released on Fine Records, a UK based label. I was very proud of that when it happened. So your track told a story, do you ever hear about the two kids now? (Laughing) Yeah (laughing) they are totally grown up and stuff now. If you could collaborate with any producer who would it be and why? On an international level I think that James Murphy is still one of my favourite producers. Superpitcher and Rebolledo, otherwise known as ‘The Pachanga Boys’ also is a great project. You manage Trentemoller who is a pioneer in the electronica world, how does it feel to see an artist grow? His remix of your track ‘Doesn’t Matter’ is insanely good… Well we have been friends for a long time. I followed his career from when it started as we signed him many years ago in 2002 onto our label. We knew we had gold on our hands but our label wasn’t big enough. So we signed him to a bigger label. Then five years ago we were travelling together to New York and he was getting big at that time with his first album. I have always been clued up with the management side of things and from then it grew. So yeah, we speak everyday and we work very well together. So your third solo album is being released, what journey can we expect to go on listening to the new album? Yes right now. Well it was released April 1st in Europe, but that obviously changes from country to country. The feeling of putting it on the shelf and knowing it will be there forever. Kind of like a legacy thing. I don’t listen to the album; I play some of the remixes when I play in the club. The feeling of creating and finishing something and feeling happy with that, and then looking at it and then catapulting into the next project. Hopefully the album will bring happiness to many people.

Australia in January and February and combine a tour in Japan on the way home. I have to really persuade myself to travel far too as I hate the flying part. Once I’m on my way I love it, but I’m not the biggest fan of the travelling part. It’s like a trip to the dentist, the waiting part is the worst but once it’s over it’s ok! I understand, so it’s going to be more about the quality of the show rather than the quantity. Well now I’m thirty-six, I have done the entire quantity thing and now I want to make it matter. Basically try to really pick out the clubs I really want to play; otherwise I will suffer from stress (laughing). That must be an incredible feeling Kasper. You are an amazing talent scout; tell me more about the band Reptile Youth? They are so young. They remind me of myself when I started out. They are ready to take on the world and they are so amazing up on the stage. Please go see them if you get chance, they will blow your mind away. Their album is out in September and they have huge potential and there has been so much interest in them. It is very exciting to follow them from so early in the process. It is very different from Trentemoller as he was already established when I started working with him. But these guys are fresh and I can guide them and advise which is a great feeling. Well we’ll definitely trust your judgment on that. What’s the big plan for 2012? I am just going to play a few gigs in Paris and Berlin, Bucharest etc. However I do not want to play too much as I want to keep an eye on Reptile Youth. I have decided that I do not need to play as much as I used to in the past, I want to play less, but better gigs. I want to choose the venues and clubs I really like, in the countries that I like to go to. I also want to get a tour in

Who are you listening to at the moment? Erm I’ve been listening to a lot of Chaka Khan at the moment. I bought all of her albums for like £12 recently so… I’ve got to stop buying box sets! I’ve got a lot of music box sets now. Is there anyone in particular that is influencing you? Um… (long pause…) I don’t know really, I think I get most of my influences from Sevy and Luke and Jim. Have you got a tune in mind that’s going to be big for the summer season? I have a record that I really love playing at the moment. It’s not a new one, I’m not very kind of up so much on new music - Jim’s your man for that Have you got any plans to go out to Ibiza? God I hope so, I always like playing in Ibiza! But I’m not really sure what’s going on, there was some sort of possibility of us doing a party, and you know the very nature of what Ibiza’s like, but yeah I definitely hope to be out there, I always like playing out there. What’s on the Horse Meat Disco Schedule for the next few months? You’re going between Europe and America quite a bit… I think Sevy and Luke go to Tokyo… There are a lot of Pride events coming up in June in Canada and America plus the Jubilee’s going to be a really big weekend and the Olympics so you know, there’s a lot going on, festivals, new music we’re working on [and] hopefully a new single coming out soon. Fresh home from Australia’s Future Music Festival, Horse Meat Disco’s James Hillard talks to BBM’s Ella White about Lovebox, Ibiza and their summer plans. So what have you been up to this week? Last weekend I was in Moscow and Amsterdam so the rest of this week has been pretty relaxing really. You’ve got residencies at The Eagle in London, Lux in Lisbon, Tape in Berlin, you must be travelling a lot? We do every Sunday at the Eagle. Tape Club has closed down so we’re

waiting for a new venue and see what’s happening there and yeah we still do Lux in Portugal.

Are there any plans to go to Australia at any point? We were just in Australia back in March for Future Music Festival, we were there for a couple of weeks and yeah, it was fantastic.

What are the crowds like in Lisbon? Is it a good party scene? Yeah I think Lux has been one of the best clubs in Europe for quite a long time. I’m not sure how long it’s been running but I think it’s been more than like 15 years, and it’s a really beautiful club, really good sound system, everyone who works there is really cool and the crowds are really good fun. They’re a late crowd, they go out super late.

Are you looking forward to playing at Lovebox this summer? Yeah definitely! I love Lovebox. It’s really good that London has a really good kind of music festival. You know it’s not in the same league as Glastonbury and things like that, but you know, especially on the Sunday when we play if the weather’s good then nothing can quite match it in London I don’t think.

How did yourself, Jim Stanton, Severino and Filthy Luka all meet? We all met independently of each other and then all kind of all came together. I met Severino first when I was living in Italy I was working for a record label called Irma, then Sev came in and I kind of remember hitting it off with him straight away and he was living in London, and I was going back to London, so we arranged to meet up (in a pub/at a party) and Jim was there and that’s how I met Jim, and Luke knew Jim. Yeah we were all just out on different scenes, we were all music lovers and you know, became good friends.

Who are you looking forward to seeing there? Chic, I actually saw them in Australia but I think with any band from that sort of period you kind of wonder does their sound still stand up live today and they were amazing so I’m definitely looking forward to seeing them again, they were really fantastic. I’ve seen Grace Jones so many times but I never get bored of seeing her so I’ll probably go and watch a bit of Grace Jones, so yeah I think those are my two big ones. How does it differ between playing festivals and club nights? I think just because of the size of things you definitely play differently at a festival than at a club. By Ella White

Pony Club offers its stage to the alternative bands and artists of Melbourne on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and being open till either 5am or 7am most nights – they pack a lot in. There are six beers available on tap, as well as many more in bottles, and a decent selection of wines too in the downstairs bar. On first appearances Pony may seem a little dingy and mysterious, but as the hour gets later and the bar gets busier, you realise that just isn’t an issue for all those who come here - they like their music deep, underground, and dirty. The food here is better than you would expect from a bar venue, and knowledgeable bar staff are able to whip up your cocktail of choice with ease. Its eccentric furnishings only add to the all night crazy vibes, such as bold shades of orange in wall murals, upside-down lamp shades and the odd bit of chicken wire. The only problem with everyone knowing about it is that it’s always busy, so don’t be surprised to find yourself waiting to get in. Sydney After Hours Indie Venue – Purple Sneakers

Unfortunately Indie venues are hard to come by in Australia, so when you find one you better grab it and hold on tight. Purple Sneakers is one of those, and is on every Friday night at Sydney’s Gladstone Hotel till late. A predominantly university-aged crowd is reflected by the cheap drink prices, as rock and indie tunes are blasted out into the large room. Purple Sneakers has been described as the closest you can get to a house party without actually being in someone’s house, not only with the atmosphere and loud music, but also complete with empty cups and bottles strewn about everywhere. This place doesn’t pride itself on its slickness or classiness as a venue – its clientele are there simply to dance and sing along with the music and have a good, inexpensive night.
