FESTIVAL
Best Moments Of Stereosonic We take a look back at some the best moments of Australia’s electronic music festival. In 2013, the decision was made to turn Stereosonic into a twoday festival, meaning twice the acts, twice the music and twice the fun. Ticket-holders were treated to headline acts, David Guetta, Calvin Harris and Armin Van Buuren, for this milestone.
HARD
In 2012, LA’s HARD headed to Stereosonic for the first time. Destructo brought with him Diplo, Dillon Francis, Zedd and many more to shake up the crowd and smash the day. HARD and Destructo will return this year with Diplo, Disclosure, Duke Dumont, Oliver Heldens, Wilkinson, RL Grime and Nina Las Vegas.
David Guetta
With such a huge career already, the news we’d all been waiting for had arrived – David Guetta was to play Stereosonic for the first time in 2013. As a headline act, the big man did not disappoint, with an epic light show and the biggest smile across his face as he played hits like ‘Love Don’t Let Me Go’ and ‘Locked Out Of Heaven’ while the crowd sang along.
Major Lazer
An awesome surprise at Stereosonic in 2012 was Major Lazer, led by LA’s Diplo, which brought electronic reggae to the pumped-up crowd. Complete with giant inflatable hamster balls, silly string and upside down twerking, even Diplo whipped his shirt off and everyone went a little bit wild. 6
www.bbmlive.com
LMFAO
Getting down to their kecks and showering the stage in champagne, LMFAO were as brilliant on stage as expected back in 2011. Even Leonardo DiCaprio was spotted by the side of the stage checking them out, but we can neither confirm or deny whether he stripped off during ‘Sexy And I Know It.’
Tiesto
He hadn’t been seen at an Australian festival since the summer of 2003/4, but Tiesto’s Kaleidoscope tour earlier in 2010 was so epic that he returned in November for Stereosonic. The big man was having just about as much fun as the crowd, playing the likes of Steve Angello, Pendulum, Afrojack, and his own releases.
AWAKENINGS DEBUTS IN OZ Stereosonic has always been leading the charge in showcasing exciting brands in Australia, and this year is no different, with the addition of incredible Dutch techno brand, Awakenings, which will be making its debut in Australia at Stereosonic this November and December. Bringing a host of well-known tech and deep house acts to your ears including Brit heavyweight Carl Cox, Berlin-based duo Tale Of Us, house superwoman Nina Kraviz and UK hitmaker Route 94, there will also be Deetron, MK, Hot Since 82, Mano Le Tough, Scuba and Kolsch to delight your senses. One Day Became Two
The Girls of Stereosonic...
Check out the ladies that will be taking over the stages at Stereosonic this year.
Alison WOnderland
Preparing for each live show by jumping up and down in a corner, Alison Wonderland returns to Stereosonic this year with an even bigger set than 2011’s. Recently completing a national warehouse project that she describes as “pretty rad and very special”, Alison’s ‘Calm Down’ EP expresses the addictive electronic sound she is capable of, and which you can hear for yourself when she plays at Stereosonic. If you’ve ever dreamt of beautiful twins that can rock a stage, you’ll want to check out NERVO. Recently seen sharing a set with Steve Aoki, Mim and Liv Nervo have written for fellow Aussie, Kylie Minogue, and have remixed everyone from Katy Perry to 30 Seconds To Mars. They’re already a huge name in their own right, touring the USA with Britney Spears and hosting a night in Las Vegas. Check out their loud and bold sound at Stereosonic.
Nina Kraviz
Singer, producer and DJ, Nina Kraviz is one of the most significant artists in electronic music due to the fact she does literally everything. Releasing on Underground Quality and Rekids, her debut album echoes her style of working, using her voice as an instrument and capturing the moment by recording “from the first take.” Hailing from Siberia and a strong history with Space Ibiza, let her deep and resonating house and techno wash over you.
Tigerlily
A huge hit on social media, Tigerlily is just as popular on stage with decks in front of her. Her long dyed hair and unique style make her unmissable, while her residency at Pacha Sydney and 2013 tour with Tiesto have given her the respect and attention she deserves for her work. Now a staple in the electronic music scene, she has earned herself the title as number one female DJ in Australia by In The Mix and has the skills, style and determination to prove it.
Nina Las Vegas
A home-grown talent playing the best clubs around the country, Nina Las Vegas started playing classical piano, entered into the world of radio and began producing mixtapes and podcasts before becoming a DJ herself. From playing a weekly show on triple j to finding undiscovered talent in Australia with Diplo, she is now the most in-demand female DJ and a big character on social media.

Roar Deal In Adelaide
Whether it’s creating hordes of awful reality TV shows or invading countries in the Middle East, Australia just loves to try out America’s worst ideas for themselves.
And it seems the same is true of sport, with Port Adelaide using a copy-and-paste of the Seattle Seahawks’ idea to try and break the decibel record inside their home stadium back in July. Amusingly, it failed, but the contrived “atmosphere” it created won over quite a few AFL-centric journos who
8

seem to think screaming as loudly as possible for two minutes before a game somehow adds to the entertainment. Thankfully, a recent call to try the same thing at the MCG seems to have crossed a line with the more cynical hacks out there. “Artificially induced atmospheres also dictate how everyone experiences the game,” Martin Flanagan fist-shaked in The Age. “At 105 decibels, you don’t have much choice. I want the choice.”
Every Irishman knows that if you’re good at Gaelic football, there’s a good chance you’re good at the eight-hour fight fest that is AFL, too. And just to bolster his chances of earning a place at an AFL team, 21-year-old Padraig Lucey from Kerry also featured in crap reality TV show The Recruit. Lo and behold, it proved a success with Lucey being signed up by the Geelong Cats for next season. “It was a taste of what professional life would be like and once I got that taste I wanted more,” trumpeted Lucey, who had never played AFL until 18 months ago. The show’s winner, Johann Wagner, also landed a professional contract after being signed by Port Adelaide. Before The Recruit, Wagner had struggled to break into AFL because people assumed he was an 18th century Bavarian composer.

Carl Valeri saying Canberra should be home to the A-League’s next expansion team, while one-day-international star Michael Bevan claims it should have a Big Bash League side. Speaking after Melbourne Victory’s 6-0 spanking of Tuggerenong in the FFA Cup, Valeri said: “I think it showed Canberra is able to host these games, which means why not give them an A-League team? I think the next team, if there is going to be one, should be from Canberra. If not that, then maybe have some games here because it was a really fantastic atmosphere and not just from myself, but the players commented on it [as well].” Meanwhile, Bevan felt having a Canberra side in the hack-and-slash marketing whore competition that is the Big Bash League would benefit the game as a whole. “There’s going to be some good opportunities for Canberra cricket moving forward and a chance for Australian cricket to expand the competition,” roared Bevan. “I think it’s really important for Cricket ACT to have this exposure.”

a local’s guide to...
Surry Hills
One of the liveliest suburbs in the whole of Australia, Surry Hills fits everything you could want to find in Sydney into a small space. Teeming with bars, restaurants, cafes and stores, this is where you will spend the majority of your social hours eating, drinking, dancing and laughing. As a result, it is one of the most popular areas of the city, with 20-something professionals flocking here at all times of the day, everyday. Vibrant and full of character, there’s a range of dining options, whether you’re looking for al fresco in the summer or to cosy up in the winter, in gastro pubs, fine wine bars or trendy cafes. Wherever you choose, you can expect the highest quality produce, service and surroundings. The original and still the best, Bourke Street Bakery provides Surry Hills with morning pastries, bread loaves and hot food, whether you’re popping in for breakfast or picking up something for lunch. You’ll struggle not to indulge in a chocolate and raspberry muffin or strawberry meringue tart, but you can place your order in advance and pick it up
to resist impulse buying. You’ll find Bourke Street Bakery on, believe it or not, Bourke Street, and you’ll be able to spot it from the queue of people outside from 7am every day of the week. When it comes to shopping, Surry Hills leads the way for affluent home materials and furnishings. Planet on Commonwealth Street is a showroom of neutral tea towels, vases and tables made with sustainability and natural fibres in mind. For those of you that scour for antiques, Elements I Love is a warehouse decorated with quirky bits and unique pieces from France and India. If you really love a browse, the Surry Hills Markets have everything you could want and more. Handmade and recycled goods, you can explore fashion, furnishings and food every first Saturday of the month. This stylish suburb turns up the heat as day turns to evening, and a favourite haunt of ours is The Soda Factory, which hosts something different every night of the week. You could kick off the week with trivia and a movie on Monday, break up the midweek with Fat Bubba’s Chicken and devour a bucket between you and your friends for $10, or have a wild weekend at Factory Fridays, Soda Saturdays and Just Another Manic Sunday. The range of entertainment makes The Soda Factory a venue for everyone to eat, drink and have fun. If you’re more after dinner and drinks, you could opt for The Arisaig Tea Rooms, a contemporary bar and restaurant with a nod to classic Scottish recipes. And we couldn’t recommend anything more Scottish than a drop of whiskey, so take
14

a deep breath and knock back a wee dram of Chivas Regal. What may surprise you is the teapot cocktails. Inspired by Scottish landmarks, go for the Arran Peach Iced Tea, a concoction of gin, vodka, peach liquer, tequila and rum with lime juice and cranberry juice. Buzzing through the week with bars, restaurants and shops on your doorstep, living in Surry Hills is particularly special – if you’re lucky enough to afford it. Rent is about $500-$800 per week for a one-bedroom apartment, but you can live outside of Surry Hills and get here pretty easily with the nearby transport links of Redfern and Central Stations. If you do happen to find yourself wandering, check out the laneway of McElhone Place – the residents made it into an awardwinning garden oasis or leafy trees and fresh flowers, and cats regularly roam around while getting up to mischief.

An established part of the inner city surrounded by the similar areas of Darlinghurst, Paddington, Redfern and Alexandria, Surry Hills is everything you could expect from central Sydney. To meet up with friends, grab a coffee and a muffin or splash the cash on luxury or unusual items, it creates a lifestyle worth living.

When you’d rather be out in the sunshine, there’s nothing better than a walk along the harbour. Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour is a picturesque blend of cafes during the day and nightclubs after sundown; fisherman working to supply the local eateries with fresh produce and the boutique Little Creatures brewery serving frothy goodness to the public. You’re unlikely to find anywhere as relaxing as the harbour, but it’s also a departure point for one of the more adrenaline pumping activities in the city.
Jet Boat And Whale Watching
(info@westcoastjet.com.au). Ocean Encounter is $40 instead of $50, and Whale Watching is $50 instead of $70.
F ish And Chips
When you’re soaked to the skin and have memories to last a lifetime, get your feet firmly back on solid ground with tea at Cicerellos. Since its beginnings in 1903, this iconic fish and chip shop has become famous throughout WA, serving delicious fresh-from-the-ocean seafood including oysters, prawns, crab, mussels, flounder and barramundi. Marvel at the aquarium that spans the entire length of the kitchen, holding more than 20,000 litres of water to create a mini ecosystem of local marine life.
Beaches
So by now you’re aware that Fremantle sits alongside some stunning coastline, which means you’re only a stone’s throw from some amazing beaches. Just beyond Cicerello’s, you can set up
camp for the afternoon on Bather’s Beach. With its close proximity to town, it’s the perfect spot if it’s too hot to walk far. There’s also a little pier that you can take a snooze under if the UV rays get too much. Another one of BBM’s favourite beaches near to Fremantle is South Beach. With a cafe nearby, plenty of trees for shade and stunning views of the Indian Ocean, South Beach is one of the most relaxing beaches in Freo, and is about a 20-minute walk from the town centre. On South Beach, you’ll find plenty of guitar-wielding groups of young people, and there’s even a nice big car park if you happen to be driving. If you visit at sunset, it’s advisable to take a walk out on the rock jetty and sit peacefully whilst the fluorescent sun takes its time to disappear into the ocean. If Fremantle grabs you and you can’t bear to depart, there’s plenty of accommodation so you don’t have to rush off. From friendly easy-on-thebudget hostels to luxurious hotels easy on the eye, there’s something for everyone because everyone is welcome.
Enjoy yourself in Fremantle whichever way you please; take an easy day trip from the CBD or invest in a relaxing weekend away; spend your time sampling local food, drink and music, or explore art galleries and museums, before a historic tram ride around the port; relax with a coffee, feel the sand between your toes, scream with excitement on board a jet boat before visiting the local marine life, or terrify yourself on a Fremantle Prison tour, the options are endless.

WORK EXPAT INTERVIEW:
Michael Gavaghan With years of experience in the hospitality industry back home in London, you could say Michael Gavaghan landed on his feet when he arrived in Sydney back in February. After travelling Queensland for a month, he now works as a venue manager for Keystone, one of the biggest hospitality groups in the country. Here, he tells us what it’s like to work in Australia’s booming industry. I came here with the pretence that I didn’t want to get into a career or anything, to just have a bit of fun and work along the way, so I thought I’d just be a bartender or waiter. I didn’t expect to get into a managerial role or become a manager straight away.
The Job Search
I used this website called Seek. There’s a lot of hospitality recruitment and I just sent my CV off to quite a lot of venues and actually, because I had so much experience, Keystone was one of the only ones that called me back. I was applying for waiter jobs and stuff and bartender jobs, but Keystone were opening a new venue, so I started talking to them about that.
The Job
I’m managing a refurbishment at Gazebo up in Potts Point and it’s launching in early October. I came on board after a few months’ training within other venues with Keystone and just learnt how they work and to get used to the Australian market. It’s been pretty hands on; I’m 24

seeing the magic of learning the legal side of the job and then seeing how the different licencing laws and liquor laws are really just as strict as the UK laws.
for 50% in certain venues and certain nights of the week. It’s an encouragement to go out there and a bit of a reward as well.
The Industry
I’ve been quite lucky in the sense that I found a good job when I started looking for one more or less straight away. Because of the experience that I have within the hospitality industry specifically, there’s a lot of potential out here for change in skilled managers because of the market growing so quickly. They want good, skilled managers and they can offer sponsorship for you to stay if you want to. If you get the right venue, they can give you the training, but backpackers tend to think that hospitality is something you can fall into. You do need something about you, either the personality or the skill. We can’t teach you how to sing, but some people think that they can just be a waiter. One of my friends works in banking; he came out here, got into hospitality and hated it. He was useless at it, because he thought he could do it and it would be easy. It’s harder than it looks.
The Australian market has grown quite quickly in a very short period of time. Within the UK, there’s always been that deciding element and the celebrity chef. Whereas in Australia, it’s a little bit more recent, so I think the high-end of the industry is quite young. There’s a lack of talent, if I’m honest. Here in Sydney, people are only just starting to take hospitality seriously now. If you look at places like Melbourne, it’s a lot more hospitalityfocused. The service standards there are a bit better than what they are in Sydney, but Sydney’s coming along quite a lot.
The Keystone Family
All the Keystone venues are very different – they’ve got nightclubs and then bars and some nice dining rooms. I do go to quite a lot of them. We get key nines, so you get to eat

Oz Start Up Get going Down Under with Oz Start Up.
Aimed at the independent traveller, Oz Start Up work with a range of companies, big and small, in industries such as hospitality, office work, customer service, trades and healthcare, to fill roles such as bartenders, carpenters and nurses - many industries being suitable and available with or without work experience. If you’re looking for your first job, be flexible. It’s great if you have experience in an office or in retail, but there are so many opportunities that arise in Australia that could lead to bigger things. It doesn’t harm to take different jobs, to broaden your horizons, try your hand at something different, or just earn money to pay for future trips. If you’re looking for work to get your Second Working Holiday Visa, Oz Start Up work directly with farmers and working hostels to set you up with work in the right location. Most farming work, including fruit picking, is organised with a hostel that provides workers
26
www.bbmlive.com
for local farmers, so you have accommodation and work in one. When there are vacancies, Oz Start Up are the first to know, and are especially busy in October finding workers for mango season. While fruit picking is always in high demand, you also have the choice of cattle farming and construction – if you have the experience in it. The challenge of fruit picking does separate the most determined from the less so. The question is: how much do you really want to get your second year visa? The good news is, should you get past the first week, there’s a high probability you can do the whole 88 days, and if you can do that type of work you can pretty much do anything! If you are intent on completing your regional work, don’t leave it to the last minute; three months might not seem that long, but the work needs to be available. When it comes to sponsorship, qualifications and experience are much more necessary. If
you’re from the UK and have sales experience, recruitment companies are more likely to snatch you up due to your alternative sales skills to locals. Proven experience and qualifications will also make sponsorship for trades work much easier. The biggest industry in Australia – hospitality – is also one of the easiest to get into. Many of us have worked either in a hotel, a bar, or a restaurant at some point in our lives, and this is advantageous with the amount of work available in high season. From resorts to theme parks and food and drink, international workers are sought after for international customers, so you may be surprised by how many opportunities there really are. For more help and information on the job market, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Oz Start Up and get on your way to employment in Australia. Log on to www.ozstartup.com.au for more information.

PARTNER VISAS EXPLAINED Every year, the Australian government grants around 190,000 permanent residence visas. A little over 60,000 of these visas are allocated to the family stream. Partner visas take up a whopping 47,000 places in this family stream each year. So what are partner visas and how do they work? As the name implies, these visas are for overseas nationals who are in a relationship with an Australian permanent resident, Australian citizen or “eligible” New Zealand citizen. Probably the most common applicants are couples who are in a de facto relationship – living together, but not married. The normal immigration requirement for a de facto visa application is that the relationship must have existed for at least 12 months prior to the date of the visa application. This usually means showing that you have been living together for at least 12 months; however, migration regulations do allow an exception where the de facto relationship has been registered under an Australian State or Territory law.
The partner/de facto visa application will still need to show proof that the relationship is genuine and on-going. Examples of documents that assist in evidencing relationships include: Statutory declarations by you and friends, photos, joint and/ or separate utility bills etc. Partner visa applications can be made in Australia or from outside Australia. The visa fee is currently $4,575 if lodged in Australia or $3,085 if lodged outside Australia, but this is liable to change at any time. Most importantly, it is critical to have a well documented application so think about asking a registered migration agent to assess your best option and perhaps assist with your application: mia.org.au
By John McQuaid of Arrive Australia. Visit www.arriveaustralia.com.au for more information.
Currently, NSW, Queensland, Victoria, ACT and Tasmania allow de facto relationship registration.
This works for hetero and same-sex couples. On approval, a certificate is issued. This relationship registration certificate is accepted by Immigration in lieu of the 12 months’ relationship evidence. So, it is possible to make an application for a partner visa with less than 12 months’ evidence.

The Certificates You Need
To work in some sectors of Australia, you need a certificate, whether that be a criminal record check or skills and qualifications. To make your job search easier and as stress-free as possible, make sure you have everything you need to apply.
Working With Alcohol And Gambling
While we could have called this sector “bar and casino employment”, we would be brushing over what it actually covers. Anyone that works in a licensed venue to serve alcohol, including bars, restaurants and cafés, or enables any form of gambling, from slot machines to blackjack, needs to have the relevant certificate. The Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificate is required by law and you may be asked to present your certificate to a visiting RSA officer during your employment. To obtain it, you need to enrol in a training course and complete an assessment, which is more straightforward than it sounds, but the laws on the responsible service of alcohol may change between states, so save time and make sure yours is valid across the whole of Australia if you’re moving around a lot. With gambling establishments, you need a certificate for the Responsible Service of Gambling (RSG) or the Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG). Achieved by taking a course, it will enable you to spot problem gamblers. In certain states,
both the alcohol and gambling certificates can be obtained online, but others require you to attend a class in person, and they both vary in cost depending on the quality of the course you take. www.rsaonline.com.au etrainu.com/rsg
Nursing And Midwifery
To work in Australia as a nurse or midwife, you must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. To register, you must meet their standards of professional development, criminal history, English language, professional indemnity insurance and regency of practice. International applicants are assessed on their educational qualifications and whether they are substantially equivalent to Australian qualifications. For this, applicants must meet eight criteria with supporting documents that include evidence of identity, academic qualifications, Certificate of Registration Status (CRS) or Certificate of Good Standing (CGS), work history, criminal history and English language skills. The CRS or CGS should be from every jurisdiction outside of Australia that you
have been registered with as a health practitioner in the last five years. www.nursingmidwiferyboard. gov.au
Working With Children
Besides Tasmania, every state in Australia requires a Working With Children Check before you can gain employment in child-related areas. Unlike police checks, the Working With Children Check can be carried from one employment to another, and is valid until the relevant state dictates. Each state has its own board, procedures, requirements and time periods for validity. New South Wales offers a checklist to determine whether you are suitable to work with children, while the systems in Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia and Northern Territory are designed so that the certificate can be withdrawn if the holder commits a criminal offence. How Buying A Home Can Improve Your Sex Life
It sounds crazy, but owning your own home is not only financially beneficial. It may well improve your sex life too.
Hear us out: who else is more reliable and trustworthy than someone who owns their own home? A homeowner needs to have a stable income and good credit in order to buy a house. Forget the washboard abs and chiselled pecs
– there’s nothing sexier than someone who is financially stable and has a property to show for it. Now think back to your teenage years, when you would fumble around with your high school squeeze in your bedroom only to have your mum burst through the door. It’s funny to think back on those early attempts to get freaky, unless you’re still stuck between your mum and a hard place, if you know what we mean. The back seat of your car is another go-to workbench for property-deprived lovers, but you aren’t a teen anymore and your hatchback can no longer withstand your sexual prowess! With your own property, you can well and truly break free of the chains of the backseat and even take the action away from the bedroom. Ever tried it in the kitchen? Just make sure you wash up before the guests arrive… Right about now, you’re probably asking yourself why you haven’t flown the coop yet. Buy your own home and become master of your domain! Just remember to pull the shades to save your neighbours from getting a free peep show, unless you’re into that kind of thing. Improve your sex life and get yourself on the property ladder sharpish with help from homeloanexperts.com.au.

f o e c n a t r o p the im n o i t a c i n u m Com Communication is an important skill for networking in business and when you’re travelling. From helping you to get a job, push business deal along, and make great friends and connections whilst you’re on the road, we take a look at some helpful habits to adopt to help you get further.
Reading People
You may think you’ve done this while sitting idly in a café window, but professional people watching
is all about understanding how people work and think. A good communicator will get inside the mind of their audience – who they are, what they want and need, and why – and get to know them on a deeper level by asking questions.
Reading Stories
Seeing the bigger picture – or the hidden message – of a story, makes for a great communicator and means you can read situations that others are blind to. Understand the structure or see things others too close or far away can’t, and you’ll have an advantage over everyone else.
Guidance For Others
A communicator worth their salt can make others see what they can’t by themselves. This isn’t to change a view, but strengthen and expand it, and guide people out of their comfort zone.
Get Out There
Communication doesn’t happen at a computer behind a desk. Being outside, where people are, gives you the best chance to connect, stay relevant and see what people are doing. So get out of your own comfort zone and try something new to learn even more.
Curiosity killed the cat, but it makes a communicator excel. Do your research, ask questions and be keen to learn. If you understand something well enough, you can simplify it for others.
Being Valuable
Be informed, be experienced, be honest and you will earn the trust to be invaluable in your role and work.

Whitsundays Katie Mayors travels north this issue to discover all the Whitsundays have to offer...
TRAVEL
As you descend into the Whitsundays from the air, you are likely already experiencing a sense of awe and wonder. The water gets gradually lighter, the green atolls rising from within more frequent, and the patchwork reef begins to come into crisper focus the closer you approach this idyllic destination. Made up of 74 islands, the Whitsunday group are renowned for Hamilton Island, Daydream Island, Hayman Island (newly re-opened as the exclusive One & Only resort), Whitsunday Island, and of course as the gateway to a spectacular stretch of the Great Barrier Reef. The mainland launch pad for the Islands is Airlie Beach, a vibrant, touristy party town with bars, eateries and a plethora of booking agents for all your accommodation and activity needs. Here, we take a look at some of the amazing things you can do whilst in the Whitsundays. 34
www.bbmlive.com
Scenic Flight
Breathtaking scenery is inescapable wherever you turn in this pocket of North Queensland, but to behold some of the most startling views you should look to adventuring overhead. A small plane flight soars out through the Coral Sea to the Great Barrier Reef, circling over icons such as Heart Reef and Whitehaven Beach. The aquamarine reefs contrasting with the open sea make this area’s listing as one of the seven natural wonders of the world seem a no-brainer. GSL Aviation offers multiple flights daily and their friendly pilots are knowledgeable - goofy jokes and all. When soaring over Long Island, pilot Josh Sutherland warned to “be very careful ordering ice tea there” and he explained that Pentecost Island ”looks like Homer Simpson’s head” (quite true!). Josh kindly doubled-back over all the essential sights to ensure everyone on each side
of the plane got the shots they desired. The Reef and Island Flight takes 60 minutes and will set you back $199, but gives you some postcard-perfect photographs that will make just about every person you know envious of the trip.
Camira Sailing Adventure
Everybody in the Whitsundays knows of, or will encounter, the Camira, but usually recognise it as “the purple catamaran”. This is Cruise Whitsundays’ fun (alcohol is served from 11am) tour of the islands and the Great Barrier Reef on one of the world’s fastest catamarans. It is one of the best ways to experience the beautiful Whitehaven Beach. Made up of 98% pure silica sand (which works wonders brightening jewellery), Whitehaven is a 7km stretch of pristine beach, voted the fifth most beautiful in the world this year by Trip Advisor.
“The beach was beautiful,” said Rhiannon from Canberra, who took the day trip on the Camira with her partner James Beaumont. “Everyone had told us about it but you couldn’t believe it until you got there. Beautiful white sand, crystal clear blue water.” “People go on and on about how beautiful it is,” added James “but you really have to go there to experience it.” A full day of sailing aboard this 85ft catamaran, which reaches up to 30 knots, is a sure fire way to experience the endeavour of weaving through the Whitsunday group’s notable islands, make friends over a few drinks with your fellow sailors, and work up an appetite. Morning tea, an on-deck BBQ lunch and afternoon tea are all included, as well as snorkel gear and wetsuits.
Reefsleep
Imagine reclining on a pontoon deck 40 miles from land, the Great Barrier Reef surrounding you below and a sky full of stars above. Add to that the possibility of a massage, a heli flight and/or scuba diving and you might think we are referring to some Utopian dream. But we assure you that Reefworld is a real place, and the option for rolling up a swag or securing a double room to stay overnight is indeed a verifiable, and surely unforgettable, experience. Available to a maximum of 12 guests per night, the Reefsleep adventure offers people the chance to sip champagne on the deck as the sun goes down over the reef, before watching the Milky Way open above. The two-day adventure starts from $399 per person, and includes transfers, meals (breakfast, two morning and afternoon teas, two buffet lunches and
a BBQ dinner on deck), your accommodation out on the reef and guided snorkelling trips.
Airlie Beach
Airlie beach is the mainland gateway to the Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef. It’s a convenient base for any of the activities the region has to offer, especially as Able Point Marina has connections to most of the islands in the Whitsundays group. There are some great eating options in Airlie Beach, where for good reason, seafood is king. Most options are within a few streets of each other, mainly along Shute Harbour Road and Airlie Esplanade. Fish D’Vine: Fish Café and Rum Bar is a stand out, and would be at home in most major cities. Airlie Esplanade is an outdoor café strip across the road from the beach. It presents many

options for brunch or to have a casual lazy meal at any time, and is the right spot to indulge in what you know you came here for: fish and chips! La Tabella Trattoria is our pick, especially for their tasty grilled fish of the day, with chips and garden salad. Just a short stroll from Airlie’s main drag, Port Drive has a couple of great options for dining. Moroccan nights are evoked in Cha’Mah. Enjoy dishes like chermoula skewered prawns with a cardamom and saffron rice timbal, stuffed roasted capsicums topped with goats cheese and a spicy tomato sauce or an interesting Australian twist with marinated kangaroo kebabs in flat bread with tzatziki and a beetroot relish. Hookah pipes are also available and they host

regular Hollywood classic movie screenings. Port Drive also has the popular Denman Cellars Beer Café at which the seafood platters come highly recommended. Be sure to remember though, that you are not in a big city, so set out to dine early, especially in the quieter seasons. If the restaurant is not busy, it will close early, and you can find that trying to get a table at 8pm is a challenge. For a small town, there are certainly plenty of pubs and bars to keep you occupied into the night. Start at the biggest beer garden in town, Magnums Hotel, for a game of pool and a few beers or ciders. But be warned, before long you will be propositioned to watch (or take part in) a jelly wrestling or wet
Hamilton Island is one of the most popular islands in the whole of Queensland. At a size of 650 hectares, it has five resorts and a maximum occupancy of 3,500 people. If you are after complete indulgence, the world-renown Qualia Resort is the height of luxury, and rooms start at $995 per night. There are also more affordable options, with holiday self-catered rentals that start from $288 per night. Along the main marina you will find cafes, shops, a popular bakery and the architecturally striking Hamilton Island Yacht Club, which has a deck bar offering prime views across Dent Passage. The main way to get around the island is on golf buggies, which zip every which way you turn. A short wander from the marina and you hit the public tropical pools that sit behind Catseye Beach. Swim up to the pool bar, laze about in a reclining beach lounge, or dine at the South East Asian inspired Coca Chu restaurant on the beach.
The choice of water sports on Hamilton seems endless. Whether windsurfing, parasailing, jet skiing, kayaking, paddle boarding, wakeboarding or tube riding is your thing, all are catered for and all are easily booked through the Hamilton Island website.
who are not native to this area, but it is believed they were rescued and brought here after the closing down of a wildlife park in the area. However they arrived, they make for great photos, standing or lying before a backdrop of fringed reef and palm trees.
Daydream Island
Getting to the Whitsundays
Visiting Daydream Island is like stepping back in time to the 80s. The Atrium sports garish décor, fish-covered staff uniforms, and a soundtrack of easy listening hits like Whitney Houston and Neil Diamond – this is not at all necessarily a good thing. But young children who never experienced the kitsch of a few decades ago seem over the moon about it. Mini golf! Fish carpet! High five! Despite the island being a little run-down and in dire need of an interior overhaul, it does have some redeeming qualities, such as a generous buffet breakfast at the Waterfalls Restaurant (make your own pancakes, anyone?), an award-winning Rejuvenation Spa and the resort plays host to an abundance of sea life both in the reef surrounds and at the in-house open-air aquarium – the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The free daily demonstrations allows you to witness a frenzied feeding time, including sharks such as Big Bruce the leopard shark, mantas Pancake and Pikelet (who are 150kg of sleek wobble) and a variety of fish, including Venus tusk fish, sergeant majors, diamond-scaled mullet and parrot fish. But don’t just look out for the marine life; you are destined to also see a scattering of what looks like a hybrid between a kangaroo and a wallaby basking in the sun on and around the island’s coral beaches. These guys are actually Common Wallaroos,
Great Barrier Reef airport is situated on Hamilton Island. There are direct flights daily from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns operated by Virgin, Jetstar and Qantas Link. Cruise Whitsundays have nine transfers per day from the airport to Abel Point Marina in Airlie Beach. The trip costs $48 (most via Daydream Island). The direct crossing takes 50 minutes and takes in some stunning scenery on the way. Alternately, GSL Aviation offer small plane flights from Airlie Beach to Hamilton Island Airport for $79.
When to Go
As with much of North Queensland, the Whitsundays are beautiful year round, but the least preferred time to go is in the warmer months, not necessarily because of the high temperatures, but because October to May is ‘stinger
season’. The Box Jellyfish that has become quite common in Queensland waters has enough venom to kill an adult, or at least make them very ill. There are protective measures to lower the risk, such as stinger suits, but the ‘cooler months’, when the temperatures are still up to around 25 degrees, are preferable as the jellyfish do not frequent the water at this time. August and September are ideal months to visit, but they are also the busiest times, so book ahead.
Where to Stay
All levels of accommodation are on offer in the Whitsundays, from the super luxuriant One & Only Resort on Hayman Island or Qualia on Hamilton Island to Backpacker dorm rooms such as Nomads in Airlie Beach. For mid-range options, try the Balinese-style Blue Horizon Resort Apartments in Airlie, which has a great swimming pool and spa room – the penthouse has three spas and sleeps seven people! The Whitsundays Vista next door offers basic hotel rooms with nice views of Airlie and the Port. Images and words by Katie Mayors, host of the weekly ‘Wanderlust’ show on Bondi Beach Radio. Sail, snorkel and swim the Whitsundays…
Three days on board a catamaran surrounded by inviting turquoise waters and tropical islands may sound like a distant and expensive dream, but it’s an incredible opportunity awaiting you in the Whitsundays.
Step on board Tongarra, a 12x8-metre catamaran, and relax on the deck with the sun beaming down on you, learn to sail her through the ocean with an enthusiastic and experienced team, snorkel the kaleidoscope of coral reefs in Mantaray Bay and Blue Pearl Bay, take photos at Hill Inlet Lookout, and get to know your fellow passengers with games on Whitehaven Beach. The itinerary is extremely flexible and laidback, so you can do all or just some of what’s available, as well as undisturbed sunsets, refreshing drinks and revitalising breakfasts and lunches to keep you going. If you’d rather fall asleep beneath the stars, grab your mattress and place it in your favourite spot for a front-row seat to the sunrise. This freedom is unique to Tongarra, making her an exceptional and popular boat in the Whitsundays. This unforgettable sailing adventure is by no means out of reach. to be had whilst there? Sandboarding at Little Sahara. Imagine climbing to the top of these amazing sand dunes, seeing some fantastic 360 degree views and then sliding down the dunes with adrenalin pumping through your veins.
What is the most exciting thing about Kangaroo Island? Meeting all the local wildlife, there are kangaroos, koalas, echidnas, wallabies, lots of unique birdlife and marine animals such as the Australian Sea Lion. Seeing some spectacular scenery, Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch and the stunning beaches with their white sand and clear water. It ticks all the boxes.
Have you got any exciting tales from tours on Kangaroo Island? On a recent tour our travellers got up close and personal to an Australian Sea Lion pup at Seal Bay. This little fella was looking for some fun, saw us and came right up close to the group.
What are your top three tips for the tour? 1. Spend some time alone at Remarkable Rocks admiring the beautiful views, walking amongst the huge granite boulders and gazing out at the surrounding blue waters. 2. Talk to a local and find out why they love living on KI. 3. Try some local KI cuisine such as the pure Ligurian honey, fresh local seafood or wine grown from vines on the Island.

a weekend away in...
Shoalhaven Heads, NSW Shoalhaven Heads is a small, rural town situated in Shoalhaven, New South Wales. The area was known by a different name in the past- Jerry Bailey, and although the real reason is unknown, there is a theory that the origin of it is connected to a sailor who lost his wife while entering the hollow river mouth. It is a holiday place with a small population. The town is surrounded by wineries; it has a beach that is suitable for surfing and an access to Shoalhaven River. It is a historical place with remains of the authentic village, vineyards and landscape grounds around it, so Shoalhaven Heads gives the impression of a perfect romantic getaway. It is idyllic and calm and only two hour-drive away from Sydney, so you can still get back to the hectic city life whenever you want. The mouth of Shoalhaven River and the sea provide
the area with a wide range of water activities such as fishing, cruising and boating. There is a patrolled surf beach called Seven Mile Beach National Park, which includes a beautiful beach where you can go to take a hike, have a picnic or fly a kite. Shoalhaven Heads has an open swimming pool, sports fields and numerous barbeque areas with picnic tables and sunshields, bowling and a recreational club, as well as a golf club. In addition, for anyone looking to make their experience even more exciting and invigorating, Free Motion Sports offers just the thing. They are a company that specialises in adventurous sports and recreation activities. There are guided tours and treks that range from water sports and natural abseiling. Take part in the fun experience of Free Motion Sports’ services and make your trip to Shoalhaven Heads even more exciting!
As for the accommodation, you can choose between hotels, motels and caravan parks and mobile home villages, depending on your preferences and the budget. The Shoalhaven Heads Hotel is a picturesque venue that is perfect for indulging in a couple of drinks and enjoying a tasty meal. A place not to miss is Berry Sourdough Café, which is both a café and a bakery. Its unique interior goes in hand with the whole city atmosphere, and the food is excellent due to their relation with organic food producers, and you can also buy season fruits and vegetables there. Alexanders Vineyard Bistro is a charming place where you can go for dinner or lunch, taste some high-quality wine and stay in one of the cute cottages at Coolangatta Estate for the night, which puts it on top of your must-do list when visiting Shoalhaven Heads.

Road Trip Wester n Australia
Intrepid Travel adventure travel consultant Louise Burton takes the road trip of a life time through Western Australia... Western Australia is one of those places which seems larger than life, where you begin to feel small against the sheer scale of nature. A 10-day road trip from Perth to Broome will bring you face to face with the region’s unique landscapes and fascinating culture. Although some mornings start at 5:30am, you won’t have any trouble getting out of bed. From land, to ocean, there are lots of unique experiences to be had in Western Australia, as I found out on a recent trip down under. We had some incredible experiences on our trip; from swimming with nature’s gentle giant – the whale shark – to sand boarding down huge dunes, and rubbing shoulders with the locals around the campfire, on an overnight in a remote cattle station. 42
www.bbmlive.com
A highlight was snorkeling with manta rays and turtles in the turquoise water on the Ningaloo reef. We were lucky enough to have a front row seat for whale watching in our kayaks, as humpback whales swam just meters away beyond the reef’s edge, spritzing the surface of the ocean through their blowholes. Getting back onto dry land, another real highlight of our trip in WA took us to Karijini National park where we loved scaling the sheer gorges with one man and his passion for the wilderness. With an apt name, Pete West of West Oz Adventures took us repelling, tubing, abseiling, and free climbing into the most remote gorges of Karijini NP. We saw the oldest exposed rock on planet earth, ate lunch deep in a remote gorge beside a crystal clear lake, where the
sun peeked through the rock to keep us warm in the cool afternoon. Perhaps the most exciting part was being taken to a place where very few people get to go as we explored the restricted zone of Karijini (as well as becoming Canyoneers for the day!). We enjoyed the simple moments here too, like sleeping in swags outside and staring into the starry sky to drift off to sleep, and jumping into the cold gorge pools which took our breath away – literally.
relish this way of travelling, but will also fall in love with Western Australia.
Far Far Away
Perhaps one of the most unique things is the remoteness; driving through scrub lands, sometimes on dirt tracks, and with the occasional sheep farm lining the road, you really do feel like the only people for miles around are you and your group (most of the time you really are!). Of course there is the odd roadhouse to pick up snacks, a coffee, use the toilet, and grab some wine or beer to accompany the evening meal. It’s not until you rock up in the civilisation of Broome ten days later that you realise just how sparse the human population has been on your journey. All this adventure awaits, but sometimes just standing still, and soaking up the vistas that surround you, creates seriously humbling moments.
The Practicalities
Contrary to stereotype, you can overland and stay clean - amazing right? Hot showers are available everywhere you overnight, usually in shared shower blocks. When camping in Karijini National Park, you have the option for a solar powered shower, but if you are travelling in the Winter season be prepared for a cold shower… or no shower. Cooking fresh food every night is a real luxury on an over landing trip - your guide will plan menus so all you have to do is figure out if it’s your night to cook and clean, and take instruction from the master. And to accompany that meal? Well there’s nothing quite like drinking local Australian wine from a tin camping mug. Be prepared for “mind blowing”, “epic”, and “amazing” to escape your mouth on a daily basis as you experience Australia’s unique rugged coastline. On a group tour, you don’t have to worry about running out of gas or navigating the roadside kangaroos, because your driver (who also doubles up as your informative travel guide) deals
with this. You just need to enjoy the ride, be open minded, occasionally offer your I-pod for in-truck entertainment, and have your camera at the ready, because you might not quite believe what your eyes saw the first time. After just ten days on the west side down under, you will be sure to feel alive. Louise has just returned from three months travelling on Intrepid Travel trips around the world, after she was the lucky winner of a travel scholarship. Intrepid Travel’s 10-day Perth to Broome starts from $1,800 per person, including accommodation, selected meals, transport and a local guide. ACCOMMODATION
SINGAPORE
Singapore is the epitome of east meets west. This island country lies off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, but is a high-tech, flashy world away from the rest of Southeast Asia. Once a colonial port for the Brits in 1867, Singapore has remained a thriving financial centre that attracts travellers and international business to frolic amongst the skyscrapers and neon lights. This little crowded island is known as the Garden City, as half of the country is made up of green parks and nature reserves. You wouldn’t believe that somehow it also holds a population of over five million, and half of the population is made up of foreign workers and expats! It’s a melting pot of Singaporeans, Chinese, Indians and Malays. You get to experience all these different cultures and most importantly, their food. First thing you’ll notice is how crazily clean everything is. Then you’ll be culture shocked by the sheer amounts of flashy skyscrapers and shiny shopping malls that surround the streets. However, the list of things to do and see is endless! A great way to view Singapore is by taking a river cruise on a Bum Boat, which is a traditional old fishing boat. It’ll take you 46
www.bbmlive.com
along the waters that surround the business district and you can jump off at certain points. Dock at Marina Bay, the newest addition to Singapore. You’ll be able to see the country’s emblem, the Merlion, a striking half-lion half-fish creature. The Merlion is situated near the incredible Marina Bay Sands, which is a crowning glory of a casino hotel, topped with a huge infinity pool. The Singapore Flyer is the Asian version of London Eye. On this huge slow Ferris Wheel, you’ll be able to see all of the city and out to sea to the far off Indonesian islands on the horizon. You’ll also get a birdseye-view of Sentosa, which is an old island military fort that has been transformed into “Asia’s Favourite Playground”. There are a few beaches, an adventure park, insect kingdom & 4D cinema (to name a few features).
Back in the city centre, jaunt down Arab Street where traders used to sell their worldly wares and the stalls are still full of spices and trinkets. Check out the incredible Sri Mariamman Temple which is Singapore’s oldest Hindu temple and is ridiculously colourful and ornate. The entrance gate is an awesome plethora of gods that towers majestically above your head, and it starkly contrasts to the high-tech aspects of the country. Another feature still left from Singapore’s colonial heyday is the majestic Raffles Hotel. This hotel is named after the founder of ‘modern Singapore’, Stamford Raffles, and is famous for being the location where the Singapore Sling cocktail was created! Jazz bands play whilst old colonial wooden ceiling fans cool you. Feel free to traditionally smash your peanut
Oh, there are so many strange but delicious Asian foods you can sink your teeth into! Maxwell Road is an iconic street in Chinatown that is crammed with hawker stalls and will leave you bewildered, but full. Get some traditional ginger chicken wrapped in lettuce leaves or zingy authentic satay, and if you get a chance, try Steamboat.
A variety of fresh ingredients are laid out in a buffet style; pick what you want and it’ll get whipped up into a health broth giving you a much needed injection of clean eating! Singaporeans love their outlandish Asian beverages as well. If you like milky sugarboosts, you’ll love the Bubble & Milk Tea cafes that litter the streets. Bali Lane’s cool Blu Jaz Café serves fresh Mango Lassis or refreshing frozen margaritas that are a welcome treat from the extreme heat of Singapore. Alcohol costs a pretty penny in Singapore, which is a shame as there is an abundance of bars around Clarke Quay. This area is stuffed full of pumping restaurants and bars that locals, tourists and expats revel in every eve. Neon lights will dazzle you and live music will fill your ears at every turn! Have a cocktail in an IV bag at the hospital themed ‘Clinic’ bar. Whilst seated in wheelchairs, you’ll be served shots in hypodermic needles and test tubes, but prepare to weep a bit at the bill.
So yes, Singapore is pricey and this also applies to accommodation. The plus side is that you’ll be guaranteed to have WIFI, free breakfasts and a whole lot of other cool amenities to make the price worth it. Green Kiwi Backpacker Hostel has an awesome rooftop garden terrace for travellers to chill in! Matchbox: The Concept Hostel is quite whacky with designer touches all around the abode. The pod-style bed cabins are reminiscent of Japanese Capsule Hotels, just not as coffin-like. At a higher price, Hotel 81 Rochor near Little India has teeny private rooms that are perfectly kitted out with good-sized beds, TVs, many mirrors and comfortable bathrooms. The government of Singapore are really keen on shaking off any dull and straight-laced image they have been known to have had in the past, and are pushing tourism to the max. Rock up with some money to burn and you’re guaranteed to have a great time!

shells on the floor to help polish the wooden floorboards. Between May and July, Singapore’s shopping district holds enormous sales to boost tourism that’ll leave you struggling to repack your backpack from all your new purchases. Orchard Road is a never-ending stretch of shopping malls that buzz with life, but expect the majority of the shopping to be Western brands. To find unique things, head over to the old Malay district, Bugis Street, to do some serious shopping in the three-tier market and feast on fresh fruit on the ground level. Perhaps try some stinky durian fruit, if you dare? If not, eat some Asian delights in Bugis Village’s food courts.
Sail Croatia Sophie Saint’s been at it again, hear all about how much fun you can have when you take a sailing trip in Croatia... Sailing the high seas, cruising emerald tinged waters, scouting out far off exotic islands, battling waves (and the odd phase of sea sickness) and letting sails propel your boat to the horizon while armed with a “Yo ho ho” and a bottle of rum sounds like a pretty incredible way to spend a holiday! With numerous sailing companies to make a budding pirate’s dream come true, a sailing trip in Croatia is truly a once in a lifetime experience to be had. If you’ve never been to Croatia, then you should hop over there as fast as you can as there is good reason why it is the country that all travellers have been raving about this year. It has it all: warm waters, beaches, partying, culture, historical architecture, plus it has been the setting for many Game of Thrones scenes, which might explain why its popularity has sky-rocketed in the past year. The stunning country lies on the border of the Mediterranean and southeast Europe, neighbouring many countries, such as Hungary, Serbia and Montenegro. And of course, it stretches alongside the deliciously green Adriatic Sea that appears to come straight from a story 48

book. The Dalmatian Coast experiences pretty sweet Mediterranean temperatures, but when you’re island hopping amongst the thousand-plus islands, you must always be prepared for quick storms that might burst above your yacht due to the tropical nature of the climate. Sailing is the best way to see the islands and many sailing companies have already discovered the popularity of chartering boats. The companies vary in prices and experiences (and quality), but you’re guaranteed to be able to hit up some awesome parties with dashes of culture and sightseeing. You’ll be spoilt for choice with tour boats, but if you pick the right company, you’re guaranteed a blast! With most, you can either get a whole crew of mates and fill a boat entirely, or nab a cabin with a friend and meet some new people. If you do choose to go alone, they’ll be sure to pop you on a fun boat so you’ll quickly make new friends. Yachts of the same tour tend to sail and dock together, meaning you will have the chance to get to know others from your fleet.
these crewmembers that are there to party hard. Despite the merriment, Yacht Week ensures you will get to many sheltered bays for swimming and aim to train you in sailing so you can participate in the end of the week Regatta – a race that crowns the winners based on sailing time, atmosphere on boat and clothing/boat decorations.
MedSailors (www.medsailors.com) give you a questionnaire in order to try and group you with likeminded people. The yachts have snorkels and paddleboards for you to frolic in the waters with and they provide discounts for dry land activities when you dock, such as scooter/car hire and day trips. Popular routes usually depart from Split or Dubrovnik, and visit the popular island destinations of Vis, Hvar, Stari Grad and Gradina Bay. Each tour will be different with possible highlights including the Blue Cave and Korcula, but sometimes the weather can really impact your route so don’t go with expectations of a strict itinerary. Each Croatian town that you explore will harbour delightful eateries and bars to relax in, and of course, there is usually a party organised. Hvar Town is renowned for its party reputation, and be sure to catch the sunset at Hula Hula Hvar with a camera and cocktail ready.
There are a few things to remember before joining one of these yacht companies aside from your passport, knowing how to swim and bringing enough Croatian Kuna. You’ll need to stock up on snacks, food, water and alcohol for your trip at the marina before you set sail. There’s a fridge on-board to keep perishables (and your rum) cool, but it may be switched off if you are unable to dock at a marina to recharge your boat’s battery. Reasons for this will be when the marina is full or when you’re pretty much camping (on water) in a hidden bay. Above all, the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia is the perfect setting for a yachting holiday. When the sea sprays your skin, the sun crackles your salted hair and you’re listening to your favourite tunes with your best friends (new and old), there’s not much in the world that can beat it.
Words and images by Sophie Saint
There are also unique parties that only a select few yachts could host, and these are known as Raft parties. This is when the fleet of 10 – 25 yachts form a ring in some secluded bay, and then everyone whips out inflatables and sound systems to party the day and night away. Sailing.hr holds as many of these as they can stuff into a week and they are guaranteed to be fun. You could be docked next to a boat of Colombians who freepour rum straight into your mouth, or you could nab a bottle of fizz from the dingy for ‘Champagne Shower’ o’clock. When the sun is about to slip behind the horizon, the music hits a crescendo and the champagne/cava gets exploded all over the joint. What a celebration! Yacht Week (www.theyachtweek.com/croatia) is a mammoth trip of up to 50 yachts that sail together. At every dock, you’re likely to be surrounded by

“Why can’t I be like a deer in Nara and just get on with whatever I want to do?”
alt-J
INTERVIEWS
Gus is currently at a house party in East London when we catch him on the phone, and he sounds like he’s enjoying Bank Holiday Sunday in England. His plucky and friendly manner exudes as he continues to reel with excitement about the imminent release of the second album, “Yeah [we’re] super excited. We finished the album at the end of May, so we’ve basically had to sit on it. We’ve already been waiting for three months for it to be released. And we just can’t wait. We just can’t wait!” Explaining how they have grown up and changed since ‘An Awesome Wave’ he explains in detail. “I think we’ve got a bit better at song writing. I think we learnt a lot from An Awesome Wave, and from going on tour. We toured for two years, we got to know our instruments really well. We probably played our instruments more in those two years, than we have in our entire lives. So we came to make a second album as much more competent musicians and with more of an idea about what we could get away with.” Harking back to their previous album, he continues, ‘An Awesome Wave’ was quite a kind of colourful album, we weren’t really sure if all the mixes of styles would really go down well in just one album, and people might have been like ‘What the fuck is this?’ and then it went down well and we thought ‘Fuck it!’ we have a listenership that is up for being challenged, let’s challenge them
again. That’s the really nice thing… the freedom.”
chilled out collaboration. Which was really nice.“
alt-J’s new album opens with the track ‘Nara’ which Gus explains is a city in Japan where deer can roam freely, he elaborates on the meaning of the song. “…the idea is the song is quite a political song and it’s about gay marriage and how they should be allowed to do whatever they want, and if they love each other, they’re not hurting anybody . It’s about a man who wants to marry another man, and just saying like ‘Why can’t I be like a deer in Nara and just get on with whatever I want to do without people telling me what to do?”
It’s clear from the new album that alt-J have included tonnes of musical influences, and one song we have to ask about is ‘Left Hand Free’ which almost sounds like a reference to Donavan’s music of the 60s. Gus explains how they managed to pen the track in just 20 minutes. “That song was written really quickly. Joe had this guitar riff like ‘doing – du-du-du-du-dun, dum-dudu-dum-dum-dum’ and he’d been playing for a few years, and not really doing anything with it, and we were just like in this session for the album, having fun and jamming. We were probably quite high at the time. And I was like ‘Have you got any lyrics to that?’ and he quickly wrote down some lyrics on the fly and we started playing it, and literally within 20 minutes we had the song. And that’s really unusual for us to write songs that quickly. It’s us having fun. The song is an idea of a bar brawl in prohibition, a speakeasy bar in the 30s, so we’re all playing our instruments in this very fun alt-J way. Tom’s doing drum fills, I’m doing an organ solo, Joe’s lyrics are very like corny but it’s just a really fun song. We were like ‘that doesn’t sound anything like our music but we fucking love it, let’s record it.’”
The first release from the new album ‘Hunger Of The Pine’ features a sample from Miley Cyrus’ ‘4X4’ which instantly sent shockwaves through their fan base, but Gus explains how the unlikely collaboration came to be, “Basically Miley had become a fan of ours and she tweeted us, then Tom sort of talked to her on Twitter and asked her if she wanted him to do a remix for her, she said yes. So we got friendly with her. Tom did a really sick remix of her, and he had all the stems from the song ‘4X4’ on his computer, so when we were writing ‘Hunger Of The Pine’ we were playing around with the samples of stems on his laptop and chucked it in. And then we went to Miley’s show and met her and asked if we could use the sample and she was like ‘Yeah of course’. So it was a really natural, little

alt-J have seen international success since their debut album ‘An Awesome Wave.’ The band faced great changes when they went from four members to three at the beginning of the year, but in the face of adversity they release their second studio album ‘This Is All Yours’. Carl Cox
The legendary Carl Cox will be touching down in Australia for the epic Stereosonic this coming November and December. Here we chat to the UK DJ who has made his mark on the dance and techno scene over the last two decades.
And as any superstar DJ such as himself he’s been very busy and slips in that he’s just returned from playing in Russia of all places, noting how the scene is changing out there, “People in Russia have really started to get into the style of dance music that we know about in the rest of the world, and it’s becoming part of their lifestyle. And me going over there is cementing the fact that they don’t have to listen to just one style of music. There’s quite a lot of different styles of house and techno music that they enjoy, so it’s kind of nice to be a part of that.” Continuing on the seemingly different location to play in, Carl explains, “I was playing for a friend’s club, that’s just opened there. As you know there’s conflict in the area at the moment. But I was able to go over there, do my gig and get out!” In his relaxed and friendly manner Cox also mentions 54

that he played at the worldrenowned Burning Man festival over the summer, elaborating on the experience, he explains, “There was no advertisement to say I would be playing there. I had my own camp for the first time and it was absolutely amazing how people found us. There’s no rules at Burning Man, apart from, of course there’s the clean up campaign, leave no trace, which is really important.” Continually delivering the most exciting music to crowds the world over, Carl unveils how he manages to bring revellers and listeners to his radio show fantastic new music all the time, “There’s so many people, even the punters in the crowd that get their USB sticks of their CD’s to me. And I have a website where people can upload new music to me, and I get this on a weekly basis. And some of the music out there is just incredible. I get to sift through so many records and by doing that I’m able to pick and choose the tracks that I think will go down well on the dancefloor.” Having travelled the world for the past 20 years playing to crowds in all manner of venues, Carl explains how he fell in love with Australia and set up a semi permanent home in Melbourne, “I bought a house ten years ago now, and every year I go back in October, November and spend Christmas, and most
of January and February in Melbourne. That’s where I live. In March – end of March – I jump on a plane, and then I start to play back to back starting via America.” Carl states that he looks forward to playing at Stereosonic each year, “For me playing at Stereosonic is like coming home.” Elaborating on his love of Melbourne he explains, “I’ve been touring, and coming over for the summer for the last 20 years, and everywhere I ever went going around Australia, obviously Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, every time I got to Melbourne I just felt like I was home.” Having played at Stereosonic over the past few years, Carl notes that the festival has a “very open-minded line-up” when it comes to the artists they put on stage. Commenting on the festival he gives his opinion on its success saying, “…it’s not top heavy with just one genre of music that people are coming for. They do have a lot of different artists and all these different bands that you don’t know about . So when you go to a music festival, you sort of search for these unknowns, and the music that they’re playing isn’t what you expected. Obviously you’ve got to have your headliners to pull the crowd in to what you’re doing, but once you’ve got it you’re able to explore other avenues with other styles of music as well.”
By Hannah Shakir
Finishing up his residency for the summer in Ibiza, Carl recalls how the season has been this year, “It’s been really good actually this year. We had the World Cup on, and a lot of the clubbers had gone to the World Cup, so it put a bit of a knock on effect in the club and here on the island. But we were good in our club with numbers coming through the door.”

Dennis Ferrer
BBM’s Charlotte Mellor speaks with the dance music premier Dennis Ferrer on being a producer first and a DJ second. Half an hour on the phone to Dennis Ferrer and you come to the conclusion that he is polite, passionate – and damn funny. After greeting me with a ma’am, he apologises for losing his phone between the couch following a session in the studio the night before, “I had fallen asleep last night and couldn’t find it!” You could hardly blame him. Flying home to New Jersey from Ibiza for the weekend just to spend some time in his studio, he would be returning to the party island tomorrow. He’s been spending the summer in Europe for a residency at Pacha Ibiza, as well as festival appearances and boat parties. Spending one day in Barcelona and the next in Greece, he has a schedule that only a DJ worth his salt could have.
me where I’m going and why I’m going. I actually try not to pay too much attention otherwise I’d go crazy!” This week, he’ll be heading to the Dominican Republic for Groovefest, a dance music festival in the Caribbean, but he openly admits to preferring the intimate clubs that fit a maximum of 500 people with just one strobe light, where “everyone loses their minds”. He does, however, give credit to the festival culture. “A lot of us bitch about festivals because you don’t get a feel, the crowd is so huge that you’re basically dancing with yourself or focusing on 20 people in the front row, but you’re bringing music to the masses and that’s what we signed up for. You have the average Joe and the educated, and everybody deserves music.”
“I don’t like running unless it’s from the police.”
“It’s always a journey and a mission; you get to the airport and cross your fingers that the flight hasn’t been cancelled or delayed. It’s so busy and crazy that I just rely on the team around me to tell 56

And what about boat parties? “Boat rides are always a fun, laidback affair. Everybody’s having drinks and kicking it back in the sun.” So, what does someone who DJs until 5am do to recuperate? He plays tennis because “it’s
Despite being a club regular for house and techno fans, and spending much of his time flying from one gig to the next, Mr Ferrer is quick to stress that his heart lies with production. “I’m a producer first, and a DJ second. DJ-ing is a necessity and something I like to do, but not what I was born to do. I was born to make records and that will always be my first love.” This proves why longevity is so important to him. While admitting that everyone remembers him from his “soulful days”, his current sets, remixes and records are house and techno with that consistent Ferrer quality. As a result, he has no problem with changing and adapting to stay relevant, to a point that he will move on from a track six months after release. “I’m not a big fan of playing my own records once they’re done, so I test them and then put them away. I don’t make music to look back, I just like making them. I don’t want to be that guy that gets one hit and the rest of his records are garbage. I want to be the guy that leaves a badass collection, because you can’t take your money!”
His most recent hit – which you may not hear him play for much longer – is a remix of London Grammar’s ‘Sights’, a track that he knew no one else would touch, and would give him the challenge he desires. “It doesn’t make sense if I remix a top hit dance record,” he explains of his choice. “I had a problem because I had to stretch the vocalist’s vocal, and I thought she was gonna be mad. But dance music is not supposed to be perfect – it’s technically flawed!” This passion for production led seamlessly to creating his own label, Objektivity. An output for creativity where almost anything goes, he often teams up with the names on his label for shows, but is hesitant to get too involved. “They come down to the studio and if they’ve got a question about equipment or production, I’m here to help. I wouldn’t call it mentoring, but you can if you want!” From the way he speaks about his signings however, it appears they may not need much help. “Andre [Hommen] is hungry and loyal – he truly deserves everything he gets.” Not bad for someone who started as their I.T. guy! Meanwhile, Nasser Baker was introduced to Dennis by the Martinez Brothers’ father. “He told me “he’s amazing, talented, and just need a bit of help”. I gladly took him on and he’s going to be around for a while.”

something you can just do on the road and I don’t like running unless it’s from the police.” I mentioned he was funny right?
“I haven’t turned into a dancing Energizer bunny.”
Mick Flannery Heading over from Ireland this November, Mick Flannery will join John Spillane in a national tour acrross Australia. We catch up with Mick Flannery to find out a little more about his music and the tour.
Returning to Australia with fellow Irishman, John Spillane, he’s preparing for his second ever tour of the country, but even when he talks about pressure, he still seems remarkably calm. “I’m not afraid of it. I think it’ll be good fun.” As with many artists looking back on their first tour of Oz, he remembers the jetlag, praising those that did it in the past: “No wonder they took so many drugs.” As well as their musical and Cork backgrounds, their reason for Flannery and Spillane touring together is actually extremely practical. “We have the same manager, so it was decided for us. It’s a handy way of doing things, ‘cause we split the responsibility: if nobody shows up, it’s not clear who’s to blame!” While John is a little older with 10 albums under his belt, Flannery released his fourth album, ‘By The Rule’, in May this year, which he describes as being a “little better” than its predecessors, but still “depressing shit.” Granted, it is moody, haunting and inspired by the loneliness he felt after temporarily moving to Berlin, but his gravely tone is incredibly addictive. “That’s the type of style I got into; the four albums don’t vary in emotion. I haven’t turned into a dancing Energizer bunny. I haven’t changed much and I’ve gotten away with it.” Above all, when it comes to the new album, Flannery is reflective on his age. Now 30, he deems himself “old” and “not as naïve as I was.” The age gap between Flannery and Spillane will produce two different styles in one evening, and is another factor that will draw in different audiences. “John is probably wiser with better stories,” Flannery explains, “while I’m younger and more self-involved and think my thoughts are important.” This is not to say that audiences can’t
enjoy the two together, as they pair up at the end of each gig to perform duets of ‘Passage West’ and ‘Near Or Far’. So, is John an inspiration? “I like him very much, I’d call him a mentor, because he did a lot of things for me about 10 years ago when I was struggling to get gigs and he would have me as support. His audiences are very good for that, they’ll show you respect even if you’re shit.”
John Spillane One of the most treasured musicians and singersongwriters in Ireland, John Spillane is a charming talent. He has been covered by many and loved by more, and credits his hometown of Cork (“the centre of the universe”) and his upbringing by mother as his inspirations. His career has been drenched in highlights from two Meteor Awards, to a visit to Senegal and singing the Irish National Anthem before 45,000 people in Australia. If you haven’t heard him play live before, Spillane will be touring Australia with fellow Irishman, Mick Flannery. Catch them in the following cities on the following dates. 26th November – The Bunker at O’Malley’s, Brisbane 28th November – Factory Theatre, Sydney 29th November - Thornbury Theatre, Melbourne By Charlotte Mellor
Mick Flannery is a little worse for wear. Having spent the weekend drinking too much at Electric Picnic in Ireland, he’s still recovering despite it being three days ago, for which he blames on being “old and shit.” His thick Irish accent comes through as it does on each of his melancholic, soulful tunes, and his humour is as dry as you could hope it would be.

MUSIC NEWS BBM’s Breakthrough Track Breen - Make Sense Breen A.K.A Matt Lamb is becoming one to watch with the release of his second single ‘Make Sense’ following on from ‘Say What You Want’. ‘Make Sense’ is a delicate tune, riffing off elements of The Weeknd and the Script and mixing them with a soupçon of James Blake and Jamie Woon. It’s a mellow, laid back vocal driven production, the type of song that turns up on a chill out compilation. Imagine a lazy Saturday evening in a garden, the weather is beginning to get cold so there’s a campfire, and you’re just lying there enjoying the stars, when you hear a tune drifting over the air, and you feel totally relaxed and caught up in the moment. That’s this. Now you’re in your happy place, don’t listen to the heart-breaking lyrics: “…But then there’s you throwing fuel to the fire / Burning me to a recluse of a guy”.
Album Review: alt-J This Is All Yours Probably 2014’s most anticipated album is now here. alt-J have reappeared with their second studio album, but they’re minus band member, Gwil Sainsbury. Having now adjusted to the departure of their beloved band member, the boys all still remain friends, and “new alt-J” are going strong, in true Sugar Babes fashion and ‘This Is All Yours’ has certainly not suffered due to the new outfit. Kicking off with ‘Nara’ setting a dramatic and atmospheric scene as church bells chime and paced piano chords aid the progression of the tune. Joe

Newman’s distinctive vocals creep in, and the alt - J sound we’ve all come to know and love has arrived. Next up on the album is ‘Every Other Freckle’ which is a little bit of a creepy love song – especially with the lyrics “turn you inside out to lick you like a crisp packet” showing the band’s sense of humour. The track is filled with varying drum patterns, allusive guitar chords, and ripping bass riffs, all sandwiched together the track eventually builds into a wonderful cacophony steeping the listener in complete aural pleasure. Interestingly later on in the album ‘Left Hand Free’ sounds uncannily like Donavan, and is clearly alluding back to the sound of the 60s. Its up beat and happy sound is a nice contrast from their more dramatic songs. The first release from the album
‘Hunger Of The Pine’ features later on the album. A slow pulsing “boop” introduces the song with Newman’s gentle vocal flitting over the top, before the sounds build up. It is then the moment that shocked music snobs everywhere and Miley Cyrus’ vocal “I’m a female rebel” from her track ‘4x4’ enters, but you have to agree with the band, that it simply sounds good. One of the most futuristic, nonsensical tracks on the album is ‘The Gospel Of John Hurt’. With wonderfully plucky guitar patterns, and a steady beat, Newman’s vocals work simultaneously against the instruments to create an all powerful atmospheric sound, before completely ceasing and ending with an outro of a melody played by a metallaphone. Is ‘This Is All Yours’ as good as ‘An Awesome Wave’? They’re incomparable. Will it be played as much as ‘An Awesome Wave’? Yes.

Sampling has been around since the 1980s, and has played a major role in music ever since. From sampling a vocal from an old track and remastering it into something new, or taking the intro from a classical piece of music and turning into a house music track, it’s become the very essence of modern music, and now… it couldn’t be more accessible a tool to the producers amongst you.

BBM’s Brice Detruche gives us his rundown of the best six singles to listen to right now.
Phil Selway – It Will End In Tears
Parquet Courts – This Is Happening Now
Aside from playing drums for Radiohead, Phil Selway is also an accomplished singersongwriter whose debut solo album ‘Familial’ came out four years ago. His sophomore record ‘Weatherhouse’ is set for release this October and ‘It Will End In Tears’ is the second song unveiled so far. It sees Radiohead’s drummer do what he does best: slow, touching, understated melodic music. Centred around piano and drums, the song builds until the last chorus explodes with choir-like backing vocals.
The latest Parquet Courts single ‘This Is Happening Now’ picks up right where ‘Sunbathing Animal’ left off with repetition being the key word. It starts off as a jaunty countrytinged tune punctuated by Andrew Savage’s now trademark nonchalant vocals. It doesn’t take too long before it suddenly turns into the kind of punk rock freakout Parquet Courts have come to be known for. Yet another very strong single from the tireless New York band.
Julian Casablancas + The Voidz – Where No Eagles Fly
Not content to have released the highly recommendable album ‘Dunes’ earlier this year, Californian indie rock outfit Gardens & Villa have unveiled a brand new EP Televisor available for free on their website. ‘Love Affair’ is its lead single and above all a delightful piece of freaky psych-pop with an emphasis on rhythm and vocal harmonies. The band describe Televisor as an EP of “musical sketches”, but the songs turn out to be rather well developed and interesting for mere sketches. Get your copy here.
After unveiling an 11-minute song as the first single for his upcoming album with The Voidz, Julian Casablancas has returned to a more straightforward format with this four minute song which (of course) recalls The Strokes. It’s heavier than anything he’s done with The Strokes though, and even veers towards heavy metal through distortion and saturation with Julian screaming more than singing. The lo-fi and muffled aesthetic of the song also recalls early Strokes numbers such as ‘The Modern Age’ and ‘Barely Legal’. Which is fine by me.
Tobias Jesso Jr. – Without You
Tobias Jesso Jr. is the greatest singer-songwriter since Daniel Johnston. His latest song ‘Without You’ is so ridiculously good, all you can do is shake your head in disbelief. It’s all very real though, and that’s what makes it so special. “Why can’t you just love me?” is as simple and straightforward an opening line as it gets, yet each word and sentence seems to hang in the air forever. Tobias is currently recording his debut album with none other than Chet “JR” White formerly of Girls, scheduled for release next year. 62

Gardens & Villa – Love Affair
Johnny Marr – The Trap
Do I need to tell you who Johnny Marr is? Of course not, the man’s a legend. Last year saw the release of his proper debut solo album ‘The Messenger’, which was alright but by no means an exceptional record. Next month, Marr is putting out his new solo effort Playland, and after unveiling the catchy Electro-Pop song ‘Easy Money’, ‘The Trap’ was premiered on BBC 6 Music. It’s very different, and all the better for it. It’s mellower, with a psychedelic feel. Ride and The Stone Roses are not too far away.

Jamie T
The wait is over... The straight-talking, lyrically rhythmic one man band is back after a four-year hiatus writing in the studio. Releasing his long-awaited third album, ‘Carry On The Grudge’ on 29th September, Jamie T, or Jamie Treays, is the Wimbledon lad that brought us ‘Sheila’, an anthem about a drunk and disorderly girl who “goes out with her mate Stella.” Following the original release in 2006, a re-release in 2007 saw the track take the 15th spot in the UK Singles Chart, supported by a video featuring the late Bob Hoskins. Over the next few years, he would go on to release two albums, 2007’s ‘Panic Prevention’ and 2009’s ‘Kings & Queens’, play festivals such as Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury and V Festival, and be nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. While between his first and second albums he released a one-off track and EP to keep fans happy, between his second and current albums, he has kept fans waiting.
backing track behind soft, moody vocals. With ‘Zombie’ and ‘Turn On The Light’ as follow-ups, he is back on our radio waves and we couldn’t be happier. Celebrating the new album and anticipated return to everyone’s ears, Jamie is touring the UK from 30th October – 18th November, and will be heading to Europe from 21st November. An album, live gigs and radio appearances – after a long old wait, this comeback is one of the most important of 2014.
Since summer of 2010, there have only been rumours of new material (besides a guest appearance on a new Tim Armstrong version of ‘Wrongful Suspicion’), until hints of his presence in a recording studio appeared online at the beginning of 2014. Finally, in July, Jamie announced a selection of live dates and debuted new single, ‘Don’t You Find’ as Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record in the World on 14th July. His first release for five years, it demonstrates the maturity in his production, with an atmospheric and catchy

Legal Career Over In A Snap and a fully erect horse, but it’s not like we put them on the web or anything - we just used to post them to her address in California along with some “samples” they helped us produce. But dangerous bestial-erotic fantasies of largebreasted pop singers aside, an LA attorney is in a bit of bother after a state bar investigation discovered she had superimposed herself into numerous celebrity photographs posted on her website’s “publicity” page. Svitlana Sangary is now in danger of losing her law license due to false advertising. Idiot. “This court finds that many, and perhaps all, of these photos were created by taking original celebrity photos and then overlaying respondent’s image in order to make it appear as though (she) was in the presence of that celebrity,” Judge Donald Miles wrote in his opinion.
Superimposing yourself onto photos of celebrities to make it look like you know them may seem like a harmless, if slightly weird, pastime, but as BBM knows all too well, the police take a very dim view of it. Admittedly the Photoshopped images we got in trouble over involved Katy Perry, bondage gear
He said the photos, posted beginning in December 2012, “were part of an advertisement and solicitation for future work ... and they were false, deceptive and intended to confuse, deceive and mislead the public.” Each of the photographs in question shows Sangary posing with political figures or celebrities, including President Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio and Anne Hathaway. It was the one of her posing at the premiere of The Importance of Being Earnest with Oscar Wilde that gave the game away.
Taking Life In His Own Hands When BBM was growing up, the worst thing that could happen from masturbating too much was going blind. And even that was made up. But in the age of Internet porn, where Jennifer Lawrence’s tits are just a mouse click away, it seems the pleasures of the palm can have far worse health affects – after a bloke in China literally wanked himself to death. Budding doctor and keen onanist Zheng Gang had a heart attack and died while producing a sample at a sperm bank. Apparently he’d been there four times that week already, but staff became concerned this time when they realised he’d been 64

Celebrity Tweets @nicolerichie “’I just look like a little white mouse!’ —a tampon” So, you’ll soon be thrown in the trash then? @KeshaRose “Pee pee on the street. You have to pay for things and (2.) She’s not pretty. @serenawilliams “I like Pink. I get crushes. I’m scared of bugs. I am sensitive. I cry. I’m just a girl. I have feelings too.” Wait! What? You’re a girl?
Released on Bailey’s Like humming One Direction songs, watching the Twilight franchise or buying tampons, there are some things a self-respecting male should never do. Drinking Bailey’s Irish Cream is one of the lesser crimes on the list, punishable by a severe round of two-minute mockery by any friends in the vicinity. Unless, of course, you live in Cameroon – where the potential punishment is five years in prison. No really. See, when it comes to homophobia, Cameroon makes Russia look like a transgender Rocky Horror fanatic with a bar tab at The Tool Shed on Oxford Street. Thus the “crime” of drinking Bailey’s, which in the eyes of the law is officially a woman’s drink, is just a piss poor excuse to persecute the gay community using nonsensical stereotypes. Michel Togue, an attorney, described how stereotypes are used in prosecutions. As well as his client who was caught drinking Bailey’s, Mr Togue says he has also represented people who were jailed for five years for dressing effeminately. Now if only Russell Brand would play a gig there, we’d be rid of him for half a decade.
Wanted For Grave Crimes Faking your own death to get out of a difficult situation is not exactly a novel idea. Some of our greatest fictional characters have done it, like Sherlock Holmes, Huckleberry Finn or Dirty Den from Eastenders. Even BBM did it after Katy Perry decided to press those aggravated stalking charges. But a criminal in France decided to cut out the middle man last month by arranging his own funeral in order to fool police. The 26-year-old would-be corpse, wanted for a long list of offences including fraud and theft, placed a death notice in the Ouest-France regional paper and online. He even phoned the funeral service pretending to be his brother and then the paper, which dutifully “confirmed” the information with the funeral home. Unfortunately no one told his tearful gran, who turned up at the funeral only to discover a load of suspicious police officers and no body.

Yorkshire Proves Full Of Creeps
W
e all know Northerners like to think of themselves as the hard men of England, but it turns out Yorkshire folk (pronounced “Yorksheer fork” by locals) are as soft as the shandy-drinking Southerners they mock so often. In fact, Yorkshirians get spooked more easily than residents of any other county after topping a poll for the most number of monster and ghoul sightings in Britain – which if you’ve ever been to Elland Road on a Saturday afternoon will not come as a surprise. The county has experienced 615 unexplained encounters – the highest number in Britain, a study of ghosts, sinister sounds, big cats and bumps in the night in the past 100 years suggests.
Things That Go Hump In The Night A bloke in Italy crapped himself recently when he and his wife were woken in the middle of the night by strange noises and saw shadows moving outside their bedroom door. Not being a South African Paralympian, the husband decided against grabbing a gun and shooting indiscriminately at the door and instead opted to call the police to report a burglary. So imagine his relief when the police arrived to discover it wasn’t actually a burglar, it was just some bloke who’s been popping round to his house to knob his wife. Phew, what a relief! Apparently the bit on the side had let himself into the house in Pisa because he mistakenly thought the husband was away on business. When the truth was cleared up, the pair promptly had a bit of fisticuffs. It’s unclear if the winner then got to shag the woman in question.

“Certain areas of Britain may be referred to as ‘horror hotspots’ not solely because of their vampire reports but also because of the number of reports of general paranormal phenomena emanating from them,” said Lionel Fanthorpe, a researcher into the paranormal who clearly has too much time on his hands.
Arrest For A Rest It was late and he was tired, so baggyeyed Yank John Dettor decided to break into an empty-looking building to get some shut-eye. Alas, the 59-year-old was promptly arrested and charged with unlawful mischief after it turned out he had just accidentally broken into a police station. Smooth move. Dettor reportedly caused damages of more than $250 after using a traffic cone to smash through a window at Shelburne police station in Vermont in his search for somewhere to lie down. Apparently the idiot told police he thought it was a school and just wanted somewhere warm to bed down for the night. The attempted break-in set off an internal alarm and prompted police to enter “lock down” mode. Another officer then found drowsy Dettor outside the building.
SPORTS NEWS point to a low simmer – with the hard-boiled egg of fan animosity now based on traditional geographic differences. So instead of being assaulted at Allianz Stadium for having Turkish heritage, you’re more likely to get punched for being from Melbourne – which is more in line with FIFA standards.
In A-League Of Its Own For A Decade It’s hard to believe the A-League kicks off its 10th season this month. Over the years, legends of the game such as Alessandro del Pierro, Dwight Yorke, Robbie Fowler and, erm, Francis Jeffers have come and gone, and BBM has watched the standard of football evolve from top-halfof-League-One standard to bottom-half-of-theChampionship standard. It’s been a whirlwind journey. And call us sentimental old fools, but has it really been a decade since Croatians and Greeks used to beat the crap out of each other on the terraces of the old National Soccer League competition? How time flies. Nowadays, thanks to the A-League, such cultural friction among supporters has gone from boiling
And with those hatreds now firmly entrenched, it seems appropriate to offer an olive branch to all the old clubs from the NSL who got shafted when the competition was axed. It’s begun already with the birth of the FFA Cup, but the FFA’s chief suit David Gallop wants to make sure it continues. “The development of the A-League was a critical step, but we’ve now evolved to the point where it was important to go back into the state league system and develop opportunities to make sure that those clubs and the players they develop feel connected to the top tier of the game,” Gallop blathered. “It’s recognised by the technical experts that having development pathways from under 12s right through to senior ranks within one club is the right way to go. “We don’t have that across all 10 of our A-League clubs. Those junior pathways at NPL level remain a really important way of bringing players through.”
When The Chips Are Down Former decent footballer #Rio Ferdinand has blown the lid off the nightmarish dungeon of tortures inflicted on Manchester United players during David Moyes’ reign of terror. Apparently Scotch maniac Moyes refused to start 36-year-old #Rio in big games, made them play two-touch football in training and – horror of horrors - banned United stars from eating chips before games. We’re sure the good people of Syria are weeping at such human rights abuses. “It was a ritual that we had low-fat chips the night before a game. We loved our chips,” wrote serial Twitter twat Ferdinand in his new book, which is being serialised in The Sun. “But Moyes comes in and, after his first week, he says we can’t have chips any more.” Luckily, the Jar-Jar-Binks-alike is now working under Harry Redknapp, a man who clearly loves his fry ups.

Tipping Point For NFL Star But it’s the Yanks’ other weird obsession, tipping, which caught out NFL player LeSean McCoy recently. McCoy, who is two years into a five-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles which will see him earn a whopping $45 million, sparked a storm when he only tipped 20 cents for a big meal at the PYT burger restaurant in Philadelphia. As a result, McCoy has been hauled over the coals social media-style.
There are some things about Americans we’ll never understand. Whether it’s their obsession with the right to shoot each other, or the phrase “what am I, chopped liver?”, sometimes it’s hard to comprehend their logic – and not just because they refuse to use the metric system.
The fact McCoy claims the meal was shit, the staff were rude and he gave a small tip deliberately to send a message is neither here nor there when it comes to America’s 11th commandment. In the states, the head waiter could take a steaming dump on your plate and you’d still be expected to tip 20 per cent.
Those planet-hugging environmentalists at Shell have done yet more good work in the name of saving the world after building an artificial football pitch in Brazil which harnesses the energy of players to power the floodlights.
now be able to use this sports facility as a safe gathering place – all thanks to the floodlights powered by the community’s football players.”
The Greenest Pitch On The Planet
The Morro da Mineira community’s new pitch is built on top of 200 special tiles, which suck in the power from players running up and down so that the lights never go out if kids want to play at night. And if those lazy kids don’t do enough running to keep the floodlights going, there are also some solar panels to make sure enough energy is stored. Shell even roped in Pele to hawk the whole shebang. “This new pitch shows the extraordinary things possible when science and sport come together,” he said while shoving oil-cash into his jeans. “The Morro da Mineira community will

Swindon Town boss Mark Cooper is hoping to fine tune his side’s ability to berate match officials and get away with career-ending fouls by inviting a referee to training. In their opening seven games, Swindon have racked up an impressive 11 yellow cards and two red cards. “We do need to improve,” said Cooper, before breaking off to show his centre-halves how to execute a perfect two-footed lunge on an 18-year-old winger. “We’re looking at bringing a local referee in, to give us advice in training as to how we approach things.” Swindon’s 87 yellow cards in League One last season was the second highest total, and their seven red cards was the joint-second highest in the division. Even more surprisingly, this all happened after walking Nazi timebomb Paulo di Canio had left the club.
MOLE IN THE ENGLAND SQUAD
Sunderland star Lee Cattermole reckons England’s new-look midfield is missing one thing – Lee Cattermole. With Roy Hodgson opting for youth, speed and attacking flair following the nation’s limp exit from the World Cup, Cattermole feels a 26-year-old toughtackling midfielder with a lengthy list of disciplinary issues would be a perfect fit for the team. “In recent years, it’s not been something for me to get too interested in because of the names that were playing like Steve Gerrard and Frank Lampard. But now, you see the lads getting opportunities
and for me, that has got to be a motivation,” said Cattermole, whose impressive pedigree consists of semisuccessful spells at Wigan and Middlesbrough before achieving full mediocrity at the Stadium of Light. Still considering Fabian Delph has been given an England debut, anything is possible. And it might actually make this month’s game against San Marino interesting if Cattermole gets sent off after the first 10 minutes.
MESSI STATE OF AFFAIRS
Government killjoys in Rosario have banned parents from naming their kids Messi in tribute to the town’s most famous son, as part of a pre-emptive strike to stop a “flood” of Argentine toddlers all answering to the same moniker. Alarm bells rang when a man in the province of Rio Grande, Hector Varela, successfully petitioned authorities in his region to permit him to name his son Messi Daniel Varela. Officials drafted the new ban to head off a looming “social phenomenon.” “I am Messi’s father. Many people chose Lionel as a name for their sons after Messi, but this is more obvious,” frothed football-mad father Varela. “I am proud to be the first Argentinian to name his baby after the best soccer player in the world.” When BBM rang authorities in Leicester, we were told they had no similar plans to introduce a ban on the name “Heskey”.
CUP OF HOPE
Given that every major football league in the world also has a highly successful cup competition and that the planet’s biggest sports event is the World Cup, you’d think it would be obvious to Football Federation Australia that creating a cup tournament would be a shrewd move. And lo and behold, after 10 years of umming and ahhing over whether to do one, the FFA Cup has proved an overwhelming success. The FFA hasn’t been this surprised since proper “derby” matches between two sides in the same city proved to be hugely popular. If only there had been some kind of precedent in world football beforehand to tip them off. The quarter-finals of the FFA Cup will be held this month, with a smattering of amateur sides still in the competition, and while we’re still not entirely convinced by the idea of having the final in the middle of the season, at least it’s a step in the right direction. Who knows, maybe the FFA will even give this whole crazy “relegation/ promotion” thing a try as well – although considering how long it took them to create a club in football-obsessed Western Sydney, we won’t hold our breath.

You wake up one morning, check your face in the bathroom mirror and discover – horror of horrors – that you’ve turned into Mumm-Ra The Ever Living, the chief antagonist in the animated series Thundercats. You really should read the side-effects of that new shampoo you’ve been using, specifically the bit under side-effects which reads “warning: may cause hives, flakiness or turn user into immortal undead entity with a cat fixation”. A routine shopping trip for a bedside table turns into a nightmare when you stray from the path in IKEA and get lost for eight months in the living room section. You survive by foraging for dropped sweets and building a makeshift base out of settee cushions and spare bookcase parts. Occasionally, you’ll set fire to a stool in a bid to catch the attention of passers-by and staff, all to no avail. It’s only after a failed suicide attempt, when you try to hang yourself from an extendable lamp, that you realise you’re going to have to take matters into your own hands. Striking out to find the path with your imaginary friend “Pilson”, who is basically a light bulb with a face drawn on it, you spend days wading through low-priced sofa-beds and lumbar-supporting chairs before reaching the kitchen section and collapsing from weariness. By sheer chance, your prone body is spotted by a Chinese couple arguing about dishwashers and you are taken back to civilisation.
ASK CRYSTAL Dear Crystal, When I was a young boy growing up in Britain during the 80s, our school was visited by a number of minor celebrities, including Rolf Harris, Gary Glitter and Jimmy Savile – yet not one of them attempted to interfere with, or molest, me in any way. Naturally, this has really knocked my confidence and made me depressed. Am I really that unattractive? Savile used to be into corpses for God’s sake! What’s wrong with me? Yours Roger Dear Roger People are quick to offer sympathy to the victims of these monsters, but they often forget the youngsters who were not directly affected or traumatised in any way by these heinous crimes. Faithfully, Jock McTavish Dear Jock, I’ll cheer you up alright. God the Scottish accent turns me on. There’s just something about a bloke wearing a skirt that gets my juices flowing.
