AUSTRALIA’S BEST SPORTS BARS
Is Manchester Blue Or Red?
In another tasty derby encounter, Manchester City host United on Sunday 22nd September (1am kick-off, Monday 23rd September AEST). United could win the league title by late April, and finish a healthy 11 points over their nearest and dearest rivals, signaling a return to the status quo after the brief rise of the ‘Blue Moon’. In truth, only one derby really mattered last season as a Robin van Persie free kick proved the difference at Eastlands in December. That win extended the gap at the top to six points and City never recovered. By the time the two teams met again at Old Trafford in early April, the title race was pretty much over. However, a solo Kun Aguero goal won it for City and, despite meekly handing back their league crown, the victory proved that little separates the two teams. The Manchester derby also signals the end of
6

a baptism of fire for new boss David Moyes. United faced Chelsea at home and Liverpool at Anfield before this clash, so victory could be crucial in winning over any remaining doubters. With the league already decided in late April, the fight for fourth place took centre-stage during the final few weeks of the season. As mentioned, early September could prove to be a crucial month for Spurs’ chances of a topfour finish come what may. This means that their clash against Chelsea on Saturday 28th September (9.45pm kick-off AEST) already seems mouth-watering.
Norf Of Da River St Totteringham’s Day arrived a little later than usual last season but, for the 18th consecutive season, Arsenal finished above Spurs. Overall smugness belongs to the red half of North London yet again but only a single point separated the two sides. That Champions League football went to the victor means that derbies these days usually mean a teensy bit more than mere bragging rights with a few million pounds more. While fans eagerly anticipate gazumping their neighbours, this clash will also garner heavy attention from the two respective boardrooms. Spurs travel across North London on the opening Sunday of September (1am kick-off, Monday 2nd September AEST) looking to strike an early blow in what could be another fight for North of the river.Last season Spurs managed to royally cock up a sizeable lead in the later stages while the Gunners loaded their cannons and fired themselves into 4th.

Home form will be crucial and, whatever happens against Arsenal, this is another hugely important game. Unfortunately for Spurs, White Hart Lane has become a notoriously happy hunting ground for Chelsea and last season saw a brutal 4-2 victory back in October. A 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge in May stuttered Spurs’ chances of landing that fourth spot, and those dropped points did indeed prove crucial.
Off the pitch, there is also that classic matchup between master and apprentice with Andre Villas-Boas going up against Jose Mourinho. The two worked together at Chelsea with Villas-Boas part of the backroom staff in Mourinho’s first stint at Stamford Bridge. How much he has learnt about ‘The Special One’ will become apparent as he attempts to get one over his former boss. Can Mourinho’s unbeaten record come to an end? All will be revealed as the season plays out!

My M e l b o u r n e Name: Jade Cayton Age: 23 Location: St Kilda, Victoria Best thing I’ve discovered about Australia: Christmas in July! I have been living in Melbourne for four months now, and I am still discovering amazing places and hidden venues I had no idea existed. This deceptive city may not have as many famous landmarks and attractions as such European cities as Paris and Rome; yet under the surface there is a lot to uncover. Firstly, Melbourne is described by Aussies as the sporting capital of the world – I’m not sure the rest of the planet agrees, but it does boast international sporting events such as the Grand Prix, The Ashes Test Cricket, and it was in the state of Victoria that the national game Aussie Rules Football was founded. The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is a must do for sports fans, who can tour the 100,000 capacity stadium daily. In Winter AFL games take place here, and in summer it hosts national and international cricket games. So no matter what time of year you find yourself in Melbourne, immerse yourself in their sporting world. Cricket is a bit lengthy for me and my attention span, but AFL games are pretty easy to follow (which has nothing to do with the short shorts the players wear). Some game days you can just turn up at the stadium and buy a ticket for as little as $20. Choose one of the many Melburnian teams to support, and prepare yourself for a great day out. In Melbourne, Sunday is not a day of rest. It is far from it, in fact – shops are open late, and cafes, restaurants and bars are booming from breakfast until the early hours on Monday. ‘The Sunday Session’ is huge, so if you plan to work here, prepare to be working all day, or socialising. I find one of the best places to spend a Sunday is at the Asian Beer Cafe, on the top floor of Melbourne Central. For starters, it is two for one cocktails, all day. There’s also $10 jugs for those who do not share my love of cocktails, and ridiculously cheap food including $4 pizzas from 7pm. Throw in a large balcony with a lovely city view, and the chance to learn a new language when you visit the bathroom – you really can’t complain. Of course, Sunday is not the only good day to drink in the city. Melbourne has an array of interesting bars that have a little something extra to make your night more exciting. On Wednesdays, St Kilda’s backpacker population flock to 29th Apartment on Fitzroy Street. This small bar has been transformed into a stylish New York apartment, the smoking area outside even has a white picket fence. Wednesdays are popular because they offer $1 pizzas and 90s Pop and Indie music – but I’d suggest popping in on another night, so you can really appreciate the decor and have a game of giant Jenga. Croft Institute, hidden down an alley in Chinatown, also has an interesting theme – a science lab. Drink cocktails that look like a chemistry experiment! Then, if the Melbourne winter just isn’t cold enough for you, try the Ice Lounge on Southbank. At a chilly -10C, enjoy a drink from a glass made of ice, and sit on seats sculpted out of ice, while you are surrounded by....ice! This great city has something for everyone, but you have to be willing to explore; Melbourne is a journey of discovery, and I am still discovering.

What’s Cooking: TAJ Indian Cuisine Melbourne’s newest Indian restaurant prides itself not only on good food, but the opportunity to experience a different culture. Located near the Queen Victoria Market, the TAJ Indian Cuisine has the benefit of being so close to a hub of “foodie” evening visitors. The reaction to this very new restaurant has been positive to say the least, and there is a good reason why… The entrees are immediately inviting with tandoori dishes and platters that are bound to please everyone. The mouth-watering Taj platter has a selection of tandoori treats such as chicken in marinated yoghurt and helpings of fresh coriander that will whet your appetite for what’s about to come. Although the choices on the menu sound pretty familiar with Tikka Masalas and Vindaloos, there are a number of dishes that are surprising and exciting. The vegetarian dishes in particular have wide appeal, with ingredients ranging from fresh spinach, cottage cheese, eggplant and traditional Punjabi spices. Of course, the classics must be tried and tested. There’s ample room for manoeuvre on the spice spectrum with Shahi Paneer for people with mild appetites or Beef Vindaloo for those who are expecting to feel the heat. Dessert is kept fairly simple with choices of traditional confectionary such as Galub Janiun, an authentic dessert of dumplings covered in a sweet and delicious sauce. For something a little cooler, quash the spice with Lassis, the traditional Indian yoghurt drink that will make your spring sweeter with fruity flavours like mango. Dishes are more than aesthetically pleasing, with an array of bright oranges and the bursting reds of chillies. As expected the restaurant is filled with fantastic, spicy aromas and the atmosphere is warm. Prices are average, with dishes under $20. Everything is fresh and authentic, which couldn’t be better as the restaurant also delivers and serves take-away, if you fancied staying for a night in. There is even outdoor seating if you prefer to enjoy the atmosphere in the city. TAJ Indian Cuisine is certainly one of the most exciting places to eat in Melbourne and is guaranteed to make any evening that extra special. 1294 Malvern Road, Malvern, Melbourne, Victoria www.tajindiancuisine.com.au By Priya Shermar

For a first-timer, it can be a bit overwhelming seeing people packed wall to wall, drinking and chanting, but once you get that first stein in your hand and your first ‘Prost!’ (‘Cheers!’) out the way, you’ll be singing along with an ‘oom pah pah’ band before you know it. Oh, and don’t leave home without your traditional German outfit because everybody dresses up at Oktoberfest – women are in dirndls and the men are in their finest lederhosens.
What could be better than drinking beer for sixteen days in a beautiful city? The only thing that could possibly make Oktoberfest any better is if Megan Fox was lovingly pouring the drinks for us, whilst wearing pleather lederhosen…but we digress. Oktoberfest sees ale lovers from around the world congregate in Munich for one of the greatest festivals known to man… This year will see Oktoberfest celebrate its 180th birthday and, as it’s one of the best festivals in the world, you’re either an annual attendee or it’s no doubt on your bucket list. If you’re an Oktoberfest virgin, then this is the perfect year to pop your cherry; help them celebrate a landmark age by knocking back a beer or seven. Munich will be teaming with thousands of people from all over the world and the streets will be overflowing with steins of the good stuff – there’s really no festival quite like Oktoberfest. For over two weeks, from Saturday 21st September to Sunday 6th October 2013, get involved in the German spirit of Oktoberfest. Fellow lager lovers: this is our nirvana. The enormously popular beer festival first started out as a horse race in a field in the early 19th century, in celebration of the wedding of Bavarian Prince Ludwig. Little did the Prince know that he would spawn the stout-swilling, clog-clomping, lederhosen-wearing phenomenon that it is today! 2012’s festivities attracted over seven million visitors, making Oktoberfest the largest public festival in the world. Obviously, the beer-sampling is essential – you are at the festival of beer, after all – but there’s also much more on offer, in particular, the excellent food stalls that serve native delicacies which

the Germans have meticulously perfected over centuries…to help you absorb all that beer. There’s the large bread pretzels, the knödel (bread or potato dumplings), würst, pork knuckles and, of course, the delicious sauerkraut. There will also be a huge theme park, but we’d suggest giving the rides a miss if you’ve overindulged in steins. If you wanna throw a bit of culture into your trip, then we’d highly recommend taking full advantage of one of the many tours on offer; let someone else take the stress out of booking accommodation and navigating your way around, especially if it’s your first time. That way, all you need to do is turn up and get boozy. If you’re planning on going it alone, this is the perfect opportunity for you to meet other like-minded, beer-hungry travellers. The coach to Munich will also give you the chance to discover who you’re going to want to spend your precious beer-drinking time with. The opening weekend is the best time to go, with the free-flowing beer, packed out town, and crazy atmosphere to match. The Fanatics offer a sixday coach and camping package for the opening weekend, priced at $379. With this, you get your return coach, camping, a day tour to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial site, and a visit to the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle. There is the option to stay in a hostel instead of braving it in the wild German campsites, but this package will set you back $604, though the accommodation is centrally located. Topdeck and Contiki also offer similar tours at comparable prices – we guess it just depends on which breakfast offer sounds the most appealing. Being the marvelous city that it is, you could always save your pennies for your precious pints, and just explore what Munich has to offer. Such as the Marienplatz (market square), for example, located right in the heart of the city. It is an absolute hub of activity, with shopping, a variety of places to eat and plenty of historic sights all within walking distance. There’s also the spectacular Hirschgarten nearby,
If you can’t make it to Oktoberfest this year, you’ve got three fantastic alternatives – if you’re a Sydneysider, there’s Löwenbräu Keller, an authentic German restaurant and bar; Oktoberfest Brisbane, one of the top 10 Oktoberfests around the world; or Oktoberfest Canberra. At Löwenbräu – situated on the corner of Playfair and Argyle Streets in The Rocks – you’ll be treated to hearty Bavarian food, an extensive range of pure beers and traditional music courtesy of their own ‘oom pah pah’ band. You can book a table in advance, but walk-ins are always welcome. Canberra’s annual celebration of German culture, The Harmonie German Club’s Oktoberfest, is over one weekend a little later in the year, from Friday 1st November to Sunday 3rd November 2013. Around 10,000 people attend every year, so you won’t be short of friends to make! There’ll be traditional food, wine schnapps, beer and music provided over the fun-filled weekend. This year, the Harmonie German Club will be showcasing examples of great German design and engineering over the years through displays of German vehicles. Held at the RNA Showgrounds, Oktoberfest Brisbane does a solid job of recreating the buzz occurring in Munich; it’s not Australia’s largest Oktoberfest without good reason. Book yourself a table for two weekends in October (Friday 11th to Sunday 13th and Friday 18th to Sunday 20th) and you’ll get the chance to sample the finest German food, taste hand-crafted beers made from 200-year-old recipes, enjoy traditional music and entertainment, learn more about Bavarian history and culture, and just generally have such a wicked time, you won’t even notice you’re not in Munich. So whether you make it to Munich – regardless of if you’re there for a day, a weekend or a week – or you’re having a Munich experience in Oz, get involved for a truly amazing time. Just make sure you stick to traditional German garms, but don’t get carried away and don a Borat mankini. We had to learn that lesson the hard way… By Esther Anyakwo
The Australian Beer Festival Beer Drinkers assemble! The event of the year is just around the corner... It’d be fair to say that the reason us Brits love it Down Under is due to the shared love of a good beer and, with some brand new boutique brews on offer to whet our whistles with, The Australian Beer Festival is a thirsty beer lover’s dream! Celebrating its 9th year running, Sydney’s iconic landmark The Australian Heritage Hotel in The Rocks is hosting the prestigious festival from 18th – 20th October 2013. This year comes with new extended opening hours, which means there’s more time to indulge in some of the best beers from regional NSW and interstate brewers. There will be over 100 beers and ciders on offer from established and up-and-coming boutique brewers in Australia. Organisers of the festival know we’ll all be feeling a bit peckish after a few bevvies, so be sure to treat yourself to a few tasty snacks, including the pub’s famous pizza! We’ve trailed through the list of brewers and, although it’s been tough, we’ve managed to choose some of our favourite beers from 10 of our top brewers, so make sure you grab a handful of tasting tickets and try some of these drinking delights…
McLaren Vale Beer Company
VALE/DRK is an American Dark Lager that has a strong malt, mixed with coffee. Highlights of ruby and garnet merge amongst the dark brown colouring of the beer. The flavour has been balanced using chocolate and cocoa, but it’s the citrus, pine and vanilla flavours and aromas that hit your thirsty palate first.
4 Pines Brewery
You’ll find various German-style beers on offer here, but we recommend the 4 Pines Hefeweizan and 4 Pines Pale Ale. The Hefeweizan is a light and refreshing pale wheat beer, that’s filled with a subtle hint of banana and clove yeast. The Pale Ale would be an excellent choice for fruit lovers as this light and robust pale ale is bursting with a vibrant fruity hop aroma, but packs a bitter punch!
Mountain Goat
The English-style Hightail Ale is a Mountain Goat favourite. Its rich malt flavour, tempting floral hop aroma and deep amber appearance are the reasons for its increasing popularity. Once you try it for yourself, you’ll understand why The Goat is climbing up the ranks of the boutique beer mountain.
Little Creatures
Hop flowers from Victoria, Tasmania and even the US contributed to the brewing process of Little Creatures’ Pale Ale. These hops provide the intensifying citrus and fruit flavours and have been balanced with local pale malts. Finished with a distinct bitterness, your mouth will feel refreshed and be wanting seconds.
Moo Brew
Bright copper in colour and delicate in texture, let the tartness of the Moo Brew’s Belgo awaken your taste buds. The flavour of Belgian Pale Ale combined with the American brewing method makes this a great accompaniment to rich foods like lamb and cheese, with an emphasis on taste over high alcohol content.
Riverside
Bee Home Soon Honey Ale is Riverside’s answer for anyone with a taste for liquid gold. A domestic beer with the colour to match its sweet ingredient, this is one smooth ale that goes down a treat. Appreciate the taste of honey made locally by the West End bees!
Dad & Dave’s Brewing
Made utilising only one malt and one hop, Dave and his dad have focused on making a beer that’s simply pleasant to drink. A craft beer with no fuss or pretention, this is their #1 Pale Ale.
Scharer’s
Using the traditional German fermenting method and stored at 4°C for four to six weeks, Scharer’s Bock is a soft beer, full of rich coffee and sweet chocolate notes by the time it touches your lips. It won Best Beer at the 2006 festival and remains popular to this day.
Red Island
Quiet Deeds Pale Ale is Australia’s lovechild. Born in Victoria and brewed in New South Wales, it is created using four different malts and Australian hops. Perfect between a group of friends, the floral and citrus tones are inviting and pleasing to the palate.
Endeavour
A bright ale suited to summer afternoons, Growers Bright Ale is a concoction of tropical fruit, citrus, herbs and malt aromas provided by the Galaxy and Southern Saaz hops. Light in body as well as colour, this is the perfect balance between bitterness and full malt flavour.
Useful info:
Entry to the festival is free, but tasting tickets are $15 for 10 and tasting cups are $5 each.

TRAVEL AUSTRALIA
Overground Adventure
Between Ningaloo and Perth, get ready to experience the essence of Australia - rough, challenging terrain, picturesque beaches and a lively city waiting to welcome you with open arms... In the final instalment of our tour of Western Australia, we take you from the idyllic Ningaloo Reef to the western capital - Perth. Travel along 1100km of the Coral Coast with Indian Ocean views, a fresh carpet of wildflowers, the wilderness of Kennedy Range National Park, the crystal-clear waters of Shark Bay, the national parks of Jurien Bay, and the beautiful, understated city of Perth, with its combination of beach, city and outback life – do you really need any more convincing? Well, if you do, read the following to discover exactly what you can get up to on this epic journey...
Ningaloo Reef
is Australia’s only The fringing reef and is as extraordinary as the more exploited Great Barrier Reef. Step into the waters off of Coral Bay, and you’ll see where it gets its name. The coral begins right at the water’s edge, so you don’t even have to snorkel to witness the
24 www.bbmlive.com
kaleidoscope of colour and underwater paradise that lies beneath the surface. If you fancy venturing further, Coral Breeze Sailing Cruises supplies tourists with a 360-degree view of the ocean on a catamaran. The half day Reef Explorer cruise costs $105pp, while the full day Snorkel Discovery is $140. Throughout the year you could meet turtles, manta rays, dolphins, whale sharks and humpback whales, all protected within this precious, protected ecosystem. If you want to stay on land, hire a 4x4 quad bike and travel the length of the beaches at Coral Bay, or get a 4WD and make your own way to Cape Range National Park in the north. Thanks to the variety of activities available in Ningaloo, it has become a world-renowned travel destination. Dry yourself off and head to Lake Macleod, about 100km south of the Ningaloo Reef and an hour’s
drive north of coastal town, Carnarvon. Australia’s westernmost lake, it receives a cool offshore current from Antarctica and, with its very flat coastal plain and high salt content, feels like a desert. As a result there are also salt mines, where you can witness the salt mining process with a public tour, or simply admire the view from the road. If you’re a keen birdwatcher – and let’s face it, who isn’t? – there are plenty of winged visitors, such as Fairy Terns, Red-necked Stints, Curlew Sandpipers, Banded Stilts and Ducky Gerygones. The town of Carnarvon is in a convenient location to reach attractions like Ningaloo, Shark Bay and Kennedy Range National Park. The Gascoyne River provides a strong agricultural industry with bananas, mangoes, papaya, melons and grapes, as well as seafood in the way of scallops, prawns, and crab.
Whatever you’ve done so far on your travels,
nothing will compare to the Shark Bay region. A five-hour drive south from Carnarvon, then sharply north, the popular Shark Bay stretches between mainland Australia and Francois Peron National Park, next to Dirk Hartog Island. The marine life here is thriving; from the famous Monkey Mia dolphins to the endangered dugong, the turquoise waters are so precious that it has become the Shark Bay World Heritage Area. Which is one of just 16 sites in Australia. Feed the Monkey Mia bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat on Monkey Mia Beach. These guys are so tame and friendly, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were at a water park rather than a wild marine reserve! It has taken years for them to have the confidence to come to the shore (just eight dolphins visit regularly), so respect for them is of the upmost importance. If you want to see what Earth might have looked like 3.5 billion years ago, check out the stromatolites at Hamelin Pool. A jetty has been built over the pool so everyone can get a look at these living fossils, an exciting prospect for any budding botanist. The town of Denham provides respite from the stresses of travelling. Chill out and stuff your face at one of the restaurants or enjoy a relaxing picnic at Little Lagoon. There are shops to browse, accommodation to rent and even Monkey Mia airport if you want to get to Perth in two and a half hours! Of course, if you did that, you’d miss everything in-between. Five and a half hours south of Shark Bay is the
If you have time for a day trip, pack a picnic and laze about by Rocky Pool. Shade yourself under ghost gum trees that border the pool, or better yet, cool off in the tranquil waters and explore the shallow pools for hidden fossils washed down from the Kennedy Ranges. Barbecues are provided if you want to cook up a feast with friends. Less than an hour north of the town are the Blowholes Carnarvon. A spectacular display of nature, witness a powerful jet of water shoot 20 metres into the air. The nearby beaches feature pristine white sand and perfect swimming conditions, so you’ll be in no hurry to get back to driving. Being the largest and most populated town for quite a few miles, there is an abundance of accommodation for travellers. From Carnarvon Central Apartments ($125-$145 per night) to the Best Western Inn ($119-$159 per night), plus several caravan parks including Outback Oasis ($85-$145 per night), you shouldn’t struggle to find somewhere for the night. Follow the Gascoyne River two hours east of Carnarvon town and you will find the Kennedy Ranges. Much like north-west’s Karijni and Karlimilyi, Kennedy Range National Park can only be embarked on by 4WD and you’ll have to say goodbye to hotels and running water – sleeping under the stars is all you’ll get here. Spring is the best time of year to see the park in all its glory; the
town of Kalbarri. With rugged scenery and a hotspot for all types of water sports, plus hiking and abseiling activities in its very own 183,000-hectare national park, it’s becoming an increasingly popular holiday destination. Forget relaxing; take an adrenalin-pumping, 8,000 metre skydive onto one of Kalbarri’s beaches, or view the wonders of the Pink Lake during sunset at Port Gregory. Head further
south to find Geraldton, a picturesque town nestled on the Batavia Coast. Another one for water sports, try your hand at windsurfing or yachting, but if you’re visiting in October, make sure you join in the fun at the Sunshine Festival, celebrating local culture, music and art. From Geraldton, keep on the Indian Ocean Drive to enjoy panoramic views of the blue planet on your right, and red terra firma on your left. 400km of national parks, nature reserves and roadside beaches are all that’s between you and Perth. These may be smaller in comparison to previous ones, but they still have their pulling power. Drover’s Cave, for example, literally has history written all over it. It has suffered years of people scrawling their names into it, one of which is accompanied by the year 1886. You can still explore the cave - just restrain yourself from writing on it!
Jurien Bay
lies just 5km from Drover’s Cave National Park, and is in close proximity to
many others. Protected as a marine park, the coral, limestone reefs and sea anemone beckon Australian sea lions to its shores, as well as regular visits from dolphins and humpback whales. Fishing, snorkelling and relaxing on the sandy beaches are the only activities you need to prepare yourself for here. If you’re up for a hike, take Badgingarra’s Nature Trail, an hour from Jurien Bay. Capture stunning photographs of the colourful carpet of spring flowers and even rare species like yellow and black kangaroos, mallee, mottlecah and verticordia. Then there’s Nambung National Park, just half an hour further down Indian Ocean Drive. Take in the view of the tall limestone pillars that rise above the yellow sands of the Pinnacles Desert within the park. Just before you reach your final destination,
Yanchep National Park is a must for every adventurer. Popular due to its convenient location less than an hour from Perth, it is able to provide a priceless experience of Aboriginal culture and history. Tour the wonders of Crystal Cave and Cabaret Cave, the latter of which can be hired as a unique wedding venue. Or choose from walking routes around the park ranging from 500m to 55km. If you’re too enchanted to leave, Yanchep Inn will accommodate your every need; whether you’re looking for a hostel-style room ($60-$115 per night), or keen to sleep in a king-size bed with your own actual bathroom in a Lakeview room ($190-$210 per night). If you’re a lover of irony, tuck into a kangaroo fillet steak at the restaurant, while watching your meal’s cousin hop about outside. Although this trip isn’t simply about getting from A to B, it’s probably about time we got you there.
Perth
– Australia’s sunniest, best-situated city. Here you will find 19 beautiful beaches within walking distance of busy shopping districts, stunning floral parks, food to die for and nightlife that rivals its east coast sisters. Take a cruise along Swan River to Fremantle and experience al fresco dining on the harbour; or head to Kings Park on Mount Eliza and stare out to the city while you stroll around its vast 400 hectares (that’s bigger than Central Park!). It also holds the annual Kings Park Festival in September, perfect for springtime. Restaurants in Perth are similar to Sydney and Melbourne; there is worldwide cuisine available from American to Thai, Irish and English pub grub, and the more local delicacies like calamari and chicken schnitzel. But, like most of W.A., Perth is un-missable because of its location – city, sea and countryside all wrapped into one. The beaches match any of those along the Indian Ocean, and you can never get enough of that sparkling blue coastline. Cottesloe Beach is the most popular for a seaside holiday, with its seafood restaurants and views of the sunset. Surfing is also popular here, as well as at Scarborough beach, but the strong waves of Trigg Island will entice the most enthusiastic surfer. Twenty minutes along the Sunshine Coast, the offshore reef break brings a swarm of surfer dudes on a warm summer’s day, as well as confident swimmers and surf-guard training. Drive just an hour inshore and you’ll find yourself back in the heart of the outback. Rugged landscapes, rocky terrain and the Earth’s natural architecture will take you back millions of years. In essence, Perth sums up the core of Western Australia – but it’s probably the only place you’ll be able to get a fake Rolex at four in the morning.

GLOBAL WATCH
South Africa Here, we uncover the very best of South Africa’s greatest travel destinations. If you want to see it all, here’s a digest of where to go, what to do, and how to fit it all in... We can pretty much guarantee that a trip to South Africa will leave you utterly speechless afterwards. You’ll be fumbling blindly for words when someone asks about your trip as it’ll be an experience that will overshadow all others. And unless you’ve been there, it’s hard to get across the true magic of the country. Lying at the most southern tip of the African continent, the South African landscape is as vast as it is diverse with great wines, archaeological sites, bustling cities, awesome wildlife, friendly locals and gnarly surf. Due to its incredibly varying terrain, you can experience a little bit of everything and more.
Cape Town
This beautiful city holds 3.5 million people and the iconic Table Mountain at its centre. It’s an incredibly colourful city with many galleries, a growing fashion industry, excellent guesthouses and quality restaurants and bars. The centre is a bustling cosmopolitan hub but there is a diverse range of suburbs that cater to all tastes, whether you’re an arty hippie or a hardcore fashionista. Head over to the bohemian suburb,Observatory, where live music, quirky eateries and organic food reign supreme in the shabby chic establishments. Alternatively, explore the shopping mile, aptly named Long Street, where some of the hippest cafes and bars lurk. But there’s more to Cape Town than city life. Table Mountain is surrounded by rugged wilderness and the best (and fastest) way to reach its 1086m peak is by cable car. And when you fancy a bit of beach life, Camps Bay is very popular. If you’re after some great surf then head over to the Muizenberg suburb or go and check out the 3,000 African penguins on Boulders Beach. It’s a sight to behold, but be wary as they are some stinky birds. Try and cram in some time at the vineyards of the oldest wine industry outside of Europe, then end a day in Cape Town by driving up to Signal Hill to watch the romantic sunset.
Jeffrey’s Bay
Oh Jeffrey, your bay is incredible! This is the ultimate destination if you’re into surfing. This mecca for incredible waves has even been recognised by well-known surf brands that have used it as a spot to host competitions that feature world famous surfers. Accommodation is plentiful here and will house any budget: villas, hostels, campsites - you name it, you’ll find it here. Surprisingly, there are a ton of surf brand factory outlets in this area so get your shop on with quality brands at budget prices. Jeffrey’s Bay was made for relaxation and beach bumming with healthy delicious food to sink your teeth into after a hard day’s surfing.
Johannesburg
Johannesburg is often overlooked in favour for Cape Town, but it has a lot to offer. It is the economic heart of South Africa and it is flourishing! There’s a huge divide between the rich and the poor; where massive glittering malls dominate next to severely poor townships. Warnings of daylight muggings should be heeded, although serious crime is usually away from the touristy northern suburbs. However, never walk around central Johannesburg at night and choose to travel by taxi/car instead. Easy now - don’t let these dark words ward you away! It is predominantly a friendly city and quite an arty place. The cultural district of Newtown has some wicked street art and the hipster suburb, Maboneng, holds a great Sunday Market! Juta Street has an abundance of new art galleries, coffee shops and restaurants opening, but head to the student hang-out of Braamfontein to attend some of the best drinking holes in the city. Of course, being in South Africa, a country rich in history, you have to check out the Apartheid Museum to fully understand what the people of South Africa endured and experienced throughout their deep past.
Kruger National Park
The open savannah. The safaris. The real life wild animals. This will truly make you feel like you’re in The Lion King when you immerse yourself into this incredible landscape! The national park is the largest game reserve in South Africa and is a real flagship amongst them. The Big Five is what everyone comes to try and spot: Lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and black rhinos make up the Safari Bingo, but others are mooching about too, such as, cheetahs, giraffes and hippos. Animal extravaganza or what?! Sealed roads and camps exist to make 4WD tours a bit easier, but you can hike and mountain bike around too. There are nine different trails commonly used, but in the wilderness, there are no trails.
Shark Alley
Hmmm, so you’ve ticked off your Big Five list but you’re still gagging for more nature and animals? If so, then we present you with a bit of cage diving with the beast that is The Great White Shark. The Shark Cage Diving tour will take you two hours south of Cape Town to where Great Whites patrol the waters near the fishing village Gansbaai, between March and September. 10,000 seals gather in the area to give birth which coax in the densest gathering of Great Whites on the planet. A large portion of the activity is spent waiting for the shark to take the bait of the chum mixture that’s thrown into the water. And when it arrives, into the cage you go to get up close and personal with the incredible creature. Good luck. Words by Sophie Saint. Images by Rita Maria

INTERVIEWS
Martin Solveig Martin Solveig was thrown onto an international platform after the release of his track ‘Hello’ sold record copies and became “much more famous than Martin Solveig” himself. BBMLive caught up with the world-renowned DJ in the middle of his schedule, which includes mega-collaborations and global club residencies, to discuss his many amazing achievements, his favourite clubs and romantic locations.
Hi Martin, how are you? I’m good thanks. Where in the world are you speaking to us from? I’m in Paris. Sounds lovely. How has the year been for you so far? The year has been amazing. After the ‘Smash’ era, which is my previous album, I started to work on a number of collaborations with different people that I like. The first track I released was ‘Hey Now’ which was a collaboration with The Cataracs and Kyle. It’s had quite a strong success. The latest one is a new track that I just leaked on the Internet a couple of days ago. It’s called ‘Blow’ and it’s with my longterm friend Laid Back Luke. You spoke about collaborating, how did the collaboration with The Cataracs and Kyle come about? We met a couple of years ago when we both had tracks out at the same time in the US. It was ‘Hello’ for myself and ‘Like A G6’ for The Cataracs and we happened to meet a lot in the promotion of those two singles, which were breaking through at the same time. You produced six tracks on Madonna’s album ‘MDMA’. What was it like working with Madonna? It was the biggest experience of my life, meeting with another artist. It’s such a blessing to work with someone who is so talented and someone who has managed to stay relevant for three decades, which is so unique. I’m not even sure that kind of thing will ever exist again to the younger generation of Pop artists. Where do you find inspiration from when creating music? I get inspired by different things, situations, life. I also try to be inspired by different locations such
32 www.bbmlive.com
as hotel rooms or aeroplanes, which are my two favourite places to hang out because this is where I live the most actually. ‘Hello’ was such a big song that catapulted you into the limelight, what do you think it was about that track that got people so interested? I strongly believe that it’s always accidental. There was a chain of events around the release of that song that made it very popular, and it became something that was actually much, much bigger than myself. I know that this song is so much more famous than Martin Solveig. You must travel a lot! But what would say is the single best thing about Paris? I’m almost never in Paris anymore unfortunately. Paris is a sleeping beauty as I see it. It’s a place I would recommend for people who want to propose because it’s a very romantic place. But when people ask me “where’s the best place to go to party?” I never recommend Paris. That would be like the 20th or 30th city in my chart for having fun with friends. But when you want to have a romantic weekend, Paris would probably be my second. Your second! What’s your first then? I think Rome. Rome is the most romantic city. You’re clearly very busy, but when you’re not making music what do you do for fun? I play a lot of tennis. I know it shows from the ‘Hello’ video that I have a passion for this sport. So definitely tennis. Another one would be cinema, which is my other big passion. I’ve started to read a lot about psychoanalysis. I’ve actually started to read a lot of books by Freud. I do a little bit of practice for my brain. I think it’s very boring, most DJs like to go out partying. Talking of partying, you’ve got a few dates lined up in Las Vegas. What’s the scene like out there?
Vegas right now is so impressive. I’m really having a lot of fun at XS, which is my residency. It’s a fun thing, and it’s also new compared to Ibiza, which has been running for a very long time. It’s still very American though so I don’t think it’s necessarily going to translate to the European crowd. But for sure, it’s a big deal. You mentioned some killer clubs there but can you name one that’s your favourite. It can be anywhere in the world. One club? Fine, you can name two! Go... My favourite club this year was Excess in Vegas, the parties I played were the biggest and the craziest, so many things happened there. Other DJs bumped into the DJ booth and all that stuff made the Vegas experience number one. I’m going to mention one other place that was a big surprise for me. Pacha, Ibiza, where I really did not expect anything special, but I found a very, very good musical crowd; very positive, very smiley, all the things I love. This season, this year at Pacha was the best I had played in my life and I’ve been playing there for 10 years. What have you got planned for the rest of 2013? I have maybe two, three or four tracks that are on the go, that need to be finished. I try to not release things that I’m not 100% sure of. And that doesn’t mean it’s a guaranteed success when I release something, it just means that when I release it I’m going to be happy to play it for a year or two in my set. Can you sum up your personality in three words? I would definitely say talkative, because you can’t deny I’ve been very talkative in this interview! Creative, I think I’m very creative and in a word... [and] not synthetic! By Bryony Curtis
Benny Benassi Benny Benassi is undeniably one of the most wellknown, well-loved and, above all, talented DJ’s/ producers the world has to offer. Since the release of 2002’s ‘Satisfaction’ – we all remember that video – Benassi has gone on to work with a wealth of global superstars as well as create and produce his own music. This month, the man himself caught up with BBMLive ahead of his Creamfields Festival appearance for us to quiz him on all things Benassi. Hi Benny, how are you today? Very well, currently enjoying the British summer! Where in the world are you right now, and what are you up to? [I’m] in London enjoying a day off, before heading up to Cheshire for Creamfields. How has 2013 been working out for you so far? This year has been very exciting! I particularly enjoyed playing at TomorrowLand in Belgium, among other things. Earlier this year you released ‘Dance The Pain Away’ with John Legend, how did this track come about? John Legend was working with a friend, Jean Baptiste, who decided to send Alle (my Cousin and studio partner) and I this song they were currently working on. We listened to it, loved it and decided to produce it. We then agreed that because the arrangement of the track is unlike John Legend’s usual production, it would be better suited as a ‘Benny Benassi featuring John Legend’ track. You’ve collaborated with so many amazing artists but is there anyone on your list that you still want to work with but haven’t yet? Yes there is...Bono. Really! Do you find it easy to adapt to the different sounds and genres of the artists you collaborate with? I think the general idea is to get our “guest” vocals to fit appropriately into our sound. That’s always a really interesting challenge that we face with collaborations.
‘Satisfaction’ was a huge success; when you were making the track, did you ever think you’d made such a big hit? We all thought it would do well in the clubs, but never imagined it would cross over in such a big way. What do you think it was about the track that really interested people? Apart from the raunchy video? Only joking! I think it was because it sounded different. At that time everything was strictly categorized into ‘House’ ‘Techno’ or ‘Trance’ and they were quite different tribes who often didn’t want to have much to do with each other. There was also a small Electro scene with people like Robbie Rivera and the whole Electro House/Electro Clash movement. At that time we were working in the scene and were lucky enough to hit on something that a lot of people with varying tastes could all connect with. So it was the first commercial Electro House track to chart in such a big way. Was there any reason in particular why you chose that style of video? No, the truth is the credit goes to Ministry of Sound. They came up with the idea, found the director and got it made. ‘Beautiful People’ was another track that really took off and is still being played in clubs today. How important is it for you to create music that stands the test of time? Well, it’s too early to say whether our music will stand the test of time but I hope it will. It’s not up to me though.
What do you like to get up to when you’re not making music? I like to ride my bike, cook and spend time with my family. It’s all very boring, I’m afraid. You’ve headlined festivals all over the world, but are there any festivals in particular that really stand out for you? Coachella, Ultra, Electric Daisy Carnival... they’re all special, and of course as I was saying before, TomorrowLand.. Where’s the most amazing place in the world your career has taken you? Probably countries in Asia because they’re so very different from Europe and America (and different among themselves). I love touring Asia and seeing weird things like elephants stuck in the traffic in Thailand. For anyone who wanted to become a DJ, what advice would you give them? Be true to your taste. What are your plans for the rest of 2013? A tour of Asia! Then more gigs around the USA and Europe. I also plan to finish off the album with Alle. What’s your chosen club anthem for 2013? I can’t really choose if it’s an anthem but right now I’m enjoying Calvin’s remix of Eat Sleep Rave Repeat. Thank you for your time! Thank you for yours! By Bryony Curtis

INTERVIEWS
Hernan Cattaneo
With a music career spanning three decades, we speak to South American born, world famous DJ, producer, record label head and radio station owner Hernan Cattaneo, ahead of his Australian tour.
Hi Hernan, How are you? I’m very good, thanks.
big over the last five years and it gets better and better all the time.
Where in the world are you right now? Barcelona
If you could tell our readers one club to visit, anywhere in the world, where would it be? Only one? Very difficult but Warung, Brazil is always a winner for me.
Cool! Have you been up to much this week? Yesterday I got back from London where I played at MOS with Guy J back to back, and it was awesome! Last night I went to Camp Nou (a football stadium in Barcelona) to watch Barcelona. You’ll be playing at the famous Burning Man festival in the Nevada Desert, have you been before? What’s it like? It’s out of this world really! I did it a long time ago and can’t wait to go back. Imagine the mad max three camp with the coolest and weirdest people from music and the arts all together for seven days. It’s a really special and rare event and should be a must on the agenda for anyone looking to do something exciting and intense. Are you looking forward to playing there? I’ve always wanted to go, but it does seem a little extreme! Traveling is not easy. I’m playing the day before in Marbella, Spain, so it’s going to take three flights and a three hour drive to get to the stage. Once you are there though, you don’t care about anything else. It’s a big privilege to play there and probably the most interesting and different festival in the world. It certainly sounds it! You’ll be playing in Macedonia soon, what’s the scene like out there? It’s rocking, young and super energetic - they love music. Eastern Europe has the most enthusiastic crowds of the old world - comparable to South Americans. And you’ve got Chile & Buenos Aires coming up too. Tell us, what are the clubs and crowds like over there? Buenos Aires is my hometown and it feels like I’m a local hero there for most clubbers! It’s always great to go back and play for them as they really make me feel welcome. The Chile scene has been growing

You’re heading to Australia and touring through Sydney’s Chinese Laundry, Melbourne’s The Prince Bandroom, The Met in Brisbane, and you’re playing at Habitat Garden Party in Perth... what are you most looking forward to whilst in Australia? Australia’s been great for me since my first ever tour almost 10 years ago. Every time I come back I meet old and new friends. The scene is always quality down there, so I’m really looking forward to it! Australia is one of those places where every single time I play, the sets seem to be too short for me even after four to six hours playing music! Quite simply, with all the traveling you do, could you sum up what it’s like to be a world famous DJ in just three words? A fantastic journey. You’ve released tracks from Guy J, Henry Saiz and Nick Warren on your label Sudbeat, tell us more about the label and what you look for in the artists you sign? I started the label trying to push the artists I like, the same way I do in my sets or radio shows. The idea is very simple: new and established artists all come together with musical common denominators - melody is the key. Can you tell us the craziest thing that has ever happened when you’ve been DJ-ing? I’m not a crazy person at all, so in general I’m good to avoid those moments. When you’re not jetting around the world every weekend, what do you like to do? Being a DJ/producer/radio and label owner takes much more time than jetting around. I also have a wife and three little daughters so I try very hard to be the best dad I can possibly be.
They’re very lucky to have such a cool dad! Have you got any suggestions about new tracks that our readers should download? I would say mixes. The Balance Presents Guy J is magnificent. The same for the Guy Gerber Piknic mix. Moderat’s new album is super good too. Quickfire round... Let’s get to know Hernan Cattaneo a little better... Name three of your all time favourite songs that you listen to over and over again (see we were kind and didn’t make you choose one!). Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Dépêche Mode - Almost anything from them Underworld - Dark & Long Favourite film? Star Wars IV-V-VI Goodfellas Reservoir Dogs Usual Suspects English Patient Favourite food? Japanese What colour socks do you wear? Black Your favourite holiday destination (or the most amazing place you’ve travelled to)? Greek Islands Thanks Hernan, and we look forward to seeing you in Australia!

MUSIC NEWS Hi Jacob. How are you today? Where in the world are you right now? I am in Berlin right now working in the studio on new tracks and a remix for my Get Physical Music labelmate, Fabio Gianelli. So ‘My Head is a Jungle’ has just dropped, and I absolutely love it, but what’s the response been like to the track in general? Musically I am very satisfied with it. Good production, great vocals and also very good remixes. Couldn’t do better. ‘My Head Is A Jungle’ was the follow up to the 1.4 Million selling remix of ‘One Day’ so that’s quite a challenge. Overall with platinum in Italy and Top 30 in Germany, I am very happy with this next chapter in my release history.
Wankelmut
Wankelmut is the kind of success story that you’d see in a Hollywood biopic. Just two years ago he was a philosophy student who DJ’d on the side, but then his remix of ‘One Day/ Reckoning Song’ blew up and became one of the biggest House anthems of 2012. We spoke to the man himself about his hometown of Berlin, his remixes for 2013, and exactly how he came up with that name…
What was it like working with Emma Louise? How did the collaboration come about? After discovering her music and making contact, it went very well. She did the vocals on my first instrumental layout and it worked out quite good from there. I really like the final outcome. Obviously ‘One Day’ was massive too! What led you to using the Asaf Avidan & The Mojos sample? That was a very naïve approach. I was introduced to the track by a friend whilst on a US road trip. Went home – sampled the vocals and the guitar – put it together in one night – uploaded it on Soundcloud. That’s it. Thank God the legal issues which followed have been sorted out professionally.
You started off in Berlin, a cosmopolitan city with its underground music and art scene. If there were three places/things our readers should do whilst there, what would you suggest? That’s a difficult one because people have huge expectations arriving in Berlin. Not that easy to fulfill that. I would suggest: Berghain - for a legendary club Hardwax - for a legendary record shop Friedrichshain - for a great area to visit You’re playing at Le Name Festival in France soon, what are the crowds like over there? France is a very good turf for Wankelmut. The music was quite successful and the crowds in the clubs really appreciate my work. It really works very well for me with the French people. We have to ask... why “Wankelmut”? My favourite word in the German language. The classic “two sides to every story” phrase. Quite remarkable and unique from the current point of view. Nothing was seriously planned when picking that DJ name years ago. Have you made any new discoveries of late that we should download? All the work done by Konstantin Sibold – biggest newcomer for 2013. Check his track ‘Madeleine’ for Innervisions and his remixes for DJ Yellow, Jazzanova and Chasing Kurt.

Single Reviews Pale – Fearing Faces ‘Fearing Faces’ is the latest track from mysterious Electronic duo Pale. The track is a short piece of music that comes to life swiftly and breathes in harmony with every intricate detail. With a pulsating, sturdy beat that keeps every element of the song ticking away effortlessly, the minimalist, clean sound maintained at the same level for the entire duration creates a hypnotic piece of music. Despite the song’s sombre tone, it is a genuinely bright piece of music.
Martin Garrix – Animals Stacatto Electro bursts which build into full melodic trembles introduce the latest release from Martin Garrix. When the chorus arrives, the bass is so heavy it’s almost muffled in its depth. ‘Animals’ is more experimental than other House tunes currently around, with odd and interesting synthetic and natural sounds being played on to create a tune that is sure to attract House heads in every club.

MGMT – Your Life Is A Lie
Hard With Style - Headhunterz
Never ones to be conventional, MGMT’s latest track ‘Your Life Is A Lie’ is a two minute noisy track that is interesting to listen to in terms of the sound being produced, but it never progresses any further than the disjointed, jumble of musical components. The mass of distortion featured makes the track feel poor in quality rather than quirky. Lyrically it is a mixture of repetitive one-liners and uninteresting thoughts which means that MGMT, sadly, fail to deliver anything other than fuzzy noise on this one.

The Vaccines – Melody Calling On first listen – in fact every listen – ‘Melody Calling’ isn’t easily traced back to The Vaccines. Where their previous releases were rich with energetic choruses and catchy lyrics, ‘Melody Calling’ takes a step back into a more reserved territory. Is this their attempt at a ballad? We’re unsure but either way the track is every bit appealing with its simplistic lyrics and dream-like soundscapes.
Album Reviews London Grammar – If You Wait
For a long time London Grammar have remained fairly unknown, producing track after track elusively, using the internet as a tool to initially disguise the faces behind the name. But when tracks such as ‘Wasting My Young Years’ emerged, the band had no choice but to appear from the anonymous confines of the web and proudly claim the tracks as their own. Their debut album ‘If You Wait’ reflects the trio’s mysterious nature with tracks that begin in one direction and take on a completely different personality by the end. ‘Stay Awake’ is a perfect example of this, whereby instrumentation is gradually added to create depth and when it truly kicks in – albeit quite near the end - the true nature of the track is exposed. The album is carefully modest, with the sense that the band are still growing and developing. They allow the listener to spend time understanding the music and lyrics, but not forcing them to get it. Hannah Reid’s poignant vocals aren’t stuffed with vocal techniques that draw away from the message; even though there is no doubt she’s capable of doing just that. ‘Metal and Dust’ is perhaps one of the most upbeat songs on the album, although not in terms of theme, which is the one downfall of the LP. The songs, although chilling and spectacular could benefit from some variation as each track delivers the same melancholy tone. A brilliant debut album that explores a pick ‘n’ mix of genres, incorporating Soul, Dubstep, Chillwave and Pop into one sound, giving listeners that edgy mystique we’ve come to expect and love from London Grammar.
Babyshambles – Sequel To The Prequel
Ministry Of Sound – Deep House Sessions 2013
First track ‘Fireman’ – which was actually revealed live some years previously – is a stormy, fast-paced track complete with a killer riff and those celebrated slurred warbles from frontman Pete Doherty. It’s over before you know it, but it arrogantly states that Babyshambles are well and truly back.
Todd Edwards’ remix of Rudimental track ‘Waiting All Night’ feat. Ella Eyre opens the mammoth compilation album with heavy, rhythmical beats layered above Ella Eyre’s unique croons. The elongated track, although repetitive, creates a satisfying buzz before transcending into track two, A*M*E’s ‘Need U (100%)’ effortlessly – truly exhibiting what the album has to offer.
Babyshambles are back after a lengthy six years away with their third album ‘Sequel To The Prequel’. Although they are one of those bands who can deliver to an army of fans regardless of what they do, because of who they are, whether they’ve adapted to changes in the music world since their hiatus will be revealed in the 12-track LP.
However, when second track, ‘Nothing Comes To Nothing’ kicks in, it is somewhat different from the Punk infused opener. ‘Nothing Comes To Nothing’ explores the hidden soft-side to Doherty’s vocals layered within an Indie-Pop track that of all the tracks on the album could find a home on mainstream radio. ‘Picture Me In Hospital’, although easy to assume biographical to Doherty’s life, is in fact a song about bassist Drew McConnell who in time forced Babyshambles out of hibernation. The track itself is lyrically reflective and touching, whilst a Gypsy-Folk backing, including a simple but effective violin line, provides a surprising upbeat pace. The album does seem to explore many sides of Babyshambles’ personality; romantic, angry, fuelled, lethargic, opinionated – they’re all in there, which makes for an all-round interesting listen. Almost as if Babyshambles knew to pull it out the bag, they deliver on every track.
‘Deep House Sessions’ is a reflection of the reemergence of Deep House in the current global Dance music scene. With an array of eclectic and well-crafted, remixed tracks included on this twodisc, 40 track album, Ministry Of Sound are on a mission to deliver, and deliver they do.
With seamless transitions from track to track, the album never really stops to reflect, which works to the album’s advantage – allowing listeners to focus entirely on the LP for the whole duration without distraction. Julio Bashmore, Eats Everything, Chris Malinchak and so many others all make an appearance before disc two kicks in. By that time, listeners are treated to tracks by Shadow Child, Psychemagik, RUFUS and Hot Natured, among others, in the same fashion practiced on disc one; each track grooves, bends and builds into a more exciting version of its original self effectively. The album screams cool, with each track carefully designed to create a throwback feel to warehouse parties, where Deep House originally found a home, that are well and truly coming back into fashion. The compilation does not disappoint with each track, not necessarily made better, but different, intriguing and definitely dance worthy.
Underground Electronic Reviews TWOS – Don’t Give Up
Huxley & Shenoda – Chatsworth Sound EP
Trentemøller - Lost (In My Room)
Electronic band TWOS have very little information online; their persona remains somewhat a mystery. However what is available, and largely for free, is their intricate, blip-blip Garage-noise tunes.
Providing a wealth of bouncing beats and smooth rhythms, the duo has produced an EP that sounds fresh and relevant. It is both bold in personality and thorough in its execution.
The Beach House-meets-NIN-esc ‘Gravity’ featuring Lower Dens very own Jana Hunter feels dark, and the rest of the record plays out like you’re trapped inside the mind of the David Lynch.
‘Don’t Give Up’ is the latest example of their work that’s simply bursting with glistening distorted keys and brilliantly structured glitch-based beats. They are guaranteed to be the perfect accompaniment to any late night chill out session.
These two may well have a string of brilliant tracks under their belts as solo artists, but it could well be these new mixes that cement their stunning ability at the top of the list.
Echoing synths and relentless bass riffs drive the album forward at a consistent pace, and the vast array of guest vocals gives a stimulating collection of tracks to enjoy.
‘Glitch’ is a word that has been cropping up time-and-time again when it comes to describing the new Garage scene. And whilst groups like AlunaGeorge and Disclosure have gained a whiff of chart success, there really are some truly interesting sounds to be found out there.
Considered to be “Two of the most in-demand producers on the underground House scene”, both Huxley and Shenoda are no strangers to the stage. However this latest release, ‘Chatsworth Sound’ via Defected Records will be the first time the pair have collaborated on a record.
The idea of mixing the steady, Folk sound of Low with the likes of an Electronic producer called Trentemøller seems like an ambitious undertaking. But by the time Lost (In My Room)’s opening track ‘The Dream’ fades out of view, any doubts will have been well and truly quashed.

If they stuck a drive-through McDonald’s at the end of the same street, BBM’s average Friday night would be a lot more time efficient. A Big Mac Meal and a whore. I’m lovin’ it. The ‘boxes’ are actually wooden sheds, which the window tappers and their clients will be able to access using a drive-through-style pick-up system. Motorists who wish to use the location in Zurich will have to drive down a pre-determined route where a maximum of 40 prostitutes will be positioned. Basically, if you’ve driven past a bus shelter in Newcastle city centre on a Friday night, you’ll see something similar.

It’s understood the scheme will be funded by money stolen from families persecuted and killed during World War II.
Keep It In Your Pants Mate Psst fellas, want an anti-theft device that also makes it look like you’ve got a massive cock? Course you do. Well then we suggest you get into contact with Nigel Clifford, co-founder of Adventure Underwear and the inventor of a revolutionary pair of “waterproof” boxer shorts. “Before I went travelling to South America, I was warned about pickpockets and thieves by all my friends,” said Clifford. “One of them mentioned that women are OK because they can keep their cash and credit card in their bras but guys don’t have that option. “So I made my first prototype pair of underwear before leaving for South America and kept my passport, cash and credit card in it at all times.”

- We don’t quite know where to start with this one. By the amount of tweets going on between Jedward and Tara Reid, it would almost insinuate that they have formed some sort of failed star support group, and they are now embarking on organised trips abroad... most likely with a carer near by. We can’t wait to see holiday snaps of Kerry Catona doing shots with Cher Lloyd from X-Factor in Bognor Regis!

He is now working on a women’s version of the Merino wool pants and hopes to have them on the market in November, just in time for summer in the southern hemisphere. Somehow we think women might not be as interested in the idea of having a noticeable bulge in their underwear while walking around on a beach – although it’s perfectly normal in Thailand.

This Little Baby Went To Market
Sometimes husbands and boyfriends can feel a bit neglected when their woman gives birth and the duties of motherhood take precedence over keeping their man happy. That’s how frustrated New Yorker Paul Marquez felt until he came up with a novel way to make sure his lady gave him the attention he deserved – by trying to sell the baby online. Marquez has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child and harassment after he allegedly offered his partner’s child on Craigslist for $100.
Dirty Old Forker Gets His Prong-nosis
We all have our weird sexual fetishes. Whether it’s S&M, roleplaying or paying prostitutes to viciously slap your naked ass cheeks with a rolled-up copy of BBM while they yell “you wrote this didn’t you? You filthy, filthy boy!”
Authorities say Marquez, 22, was angry with his missus so he posted the adverts with photos of her daughter on the Craigslist website. The mother notified police after she received a phone call from a person offering to buy the baby. “The reason I decided to put this post was because I got bored and wanted to get a little laugh and a little kick out of it,” Marquez told police. It’s not clear if the $100 included postage and packaging.
And apparently the older you get, the freakier you get after it was recently revealed a 70-year-old Aussie bloke had to have an object removed from his body after a sexual-gratification game gone wrong.
They talked about how the pensioner had come to the hospital for help after getting the piece of cutlery stuck when using it to achieve sexual climax. They eventually managed to retrieve the object after using a large amount of lubrication and forceps, while the man was given a general anaesthetic. We’ll never be able to prick a pork sausage again. “It is apparent that the human mind is uninhibited let alone creative,” the surgeons wrote in the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports. “Autoerotic stimulation with the aid of self-inserted urethral foreign bodies has been existent since time immemorial and have presented an unusual but known presentation to urologists.” As well as detailing the incident with the fork, the report also talked about other objects that had been retrieved from bodies, including toothbrushes, pencils, light bulbs and a rolled-up copy of BBM.
Is It A Bird? Is It A Plane? No, He’s Super Fat
Remember that scene from Free Willy where the whale jumps over the kid and swims off to a better life? Well something similar happened in Saudi Arabia last month when the country’s fattest bastard was freed from his home and airlifted to hospital for life-saving surgery. Khalid Mohsin Shaeri weighs 96 stone and hasn’t left his bedroom for two-and-a-half years. Rescuers had to demolish half his home to safely remove the giant bucket of lard, and a forklift truck was used to carry the porker to an ambulance. Call us suspicious, but we suspect he doesn’t fast during the holy month of Ramadan. Khalid was flown from the southern city of Jazan to a hospital in Riyadh on King Abdullah’s orders. Minister of Health Dr Abdullah Al Rabeeah called the king’s efforts a “humanitarian gesture” - although we suspect Burger King would have been more use in getting the fat git out of bed.
CatDog
A cat’s life has been saved by the least expected creature... a dog! The New Zealand dog donated blood to save Rory, the cat.
We know what you’re thinking; that this is one of those stories where the guy shoves a ketchup bottle up his arse or something and ends up down the doctor’s. Well you’d be almost right, but the twist to this tale is it wasn’t a ketchup bottle, it was a fourinch fork. And it wasn’t his arse either. It was his cock. The unfortunate incident in Adelaide was described in a recent medical journal by three surgeons who operated on the man to remove the kitchen utensil.
Fair enough, although Professor Rungruangkitkrai didn’t explain why he also made them eat hay while he rode around on their backs wearing a cowboy hat.
There seemed like there was no hope for Rory after he had ingested rat poison, but Macy the 18 yearold Labrador was there to save the day. As it was a late Friday night, labs were closed, so the vet operating suggested using the blood of a dog. Macy then participated in an inter-species transfusion, giving 120ml of blood.
Thailand’s Anti-Cheat Sheets
Schools in China are often accused of treating their children like cattle. Well in Thailand it’s certainly not the case. They’re treated more like horses – as proven recently when a Bangkok university made its students wear blinkers to stop them from cheating during an exam. The bizarre headgear - consisting of two A4 sheets of plain white writing paper attached by paperclips to a headband - was worn by nearly 100 students on Wednesday during a textile exam. It was the brainchild of a professor with a horse fixation who was concerned that his small exam room would encourage plagiarism. “It was for fun, relaxation and humour for the students,” Nattadon Rungruangkitkrai said while neighing and whinnying. “They said the blinkers could release stress during the exam and help them concentrate.”
And who said cats and dogs were bloody enemies?
Pure Sex App Cuts The Crap
Are you sick of filling in profiles or spending hours crafting messages just for sex? Well so are Roman Sidorenko and Alexander Kukhtenko, two men that have decided enough is enough by crafting the ultimate app that eliminates pointless information. Instead, these geniuses have come up with a simple-to-use app that makes finding sex buddies even easier! All you have to do is specify the gender(s) of people you would like to sleep with, state whether you can host and select the hotties that you want with an ‘okay’ or ‘no way’ option. Apple are still in the process of approving this revolutionary and minimalist approach to dating, and why wouldn’t they want this? This blows actually getting to know people out the window!

SPORTS NEWS Sunderland Still Playing Ketchup Fascist Geordie-botherer Paulo Di Canio has taken his first step towards establishing the Third Reich at Sunderland by banning “impure” food stuffs such as ketchup, mayonnaise and, erm, ice. Tyneside’s answer to Goebbels revealed he had overhauled the squad’s diet in a bid to change the British beer-swilling culture at the club. We suspect it’ll be kosher foods off the menu next. “In general the players are getting the message about how things will be here,” he dictated as several Luftwaffe aircraft flew in formation overhead. “Gone are the days of a player coming in and boasting about drinking seven beers the night before. Now they arrive an hour early for training, and we have lectures about why we can’t have everyday things like mayonnaise, ketchup and ice. They can cause chemical problems to the liver, to the stomach.” Ketchup and mayonnaise we can kind of understand, but ice is the one that baffles us. Can frozen water really be such a threat to his vision of Sunderland’s “pure race”? “If you have ice with coke you can have indigestion. I know players who’ve had ice with their coke the night before a game and then couldn’t play,” blathered Di Canio while Wagner’s Ring cycle played in the background. “We give the players diet sheets to follow, but I think they still enjoy life.” Who knows, maybe he’s onto something and the real reason England have massively under-performed at every major tournament for the last 50 years is because we like a bit of ice with our soft drinks. Maybe Ricky Lambert, James Milner and Glen Johnson would be up there with Lionel Messi if they cut out the ketchup. Or maybe we’re just shit.
Wake Me Up When September Ends
From about July onwards, fresh-off-the-boat British and Irish ex-pats are baffled by AFL and NRL commentators uttering phrases like “he’ll need to improve if he wants to be playing in September” or “we won’t be seeing them in September if they keep playing like that”. For a long time BBM thought it was a veiled warning; that rugby league coaches take a sledgehammer to the legs of underperforming players at the end of August, or – worse – make them “disappear” mafia-style. No wonder the players all dope themselves to the tits. Of course, we eventually came to realise it’s actually a reference to that most-hallowed and patently unfair Australian system of deciding on the best team that year – the finals series – which tradition dictates begins at the start of September. While football fans, quite rightly, think the team that finishes top of the league (or “ladder” as they insist on calling it over here) should be crowned that season’s best, our Aussie cousins don’t, instead placing greater emphasis on the end-of-season cup competition that technically can lead to the team that finished eighth on the “ladder” being crowned as that year’s greatest club. The Aussies argue this generates more excitement and that the pressure separates the men from the boys. We’re sure the fact it’s also a massive cash cow for the AFL and NRL has nothing to do with it. As we write this in mid-August, it’s difficult to predict just what will happen in the finals, but using a sophisticated spreadsheet program that generates likely results and cross-references it with details of things like form and experience, we’ve managed to whittle down the eventual AFL grand final winner to just two teams: the Sydney Swans or a team from Melbourne. Possibly Fremantle as well. In fact we’d be willing to bet good money on any of those three. Similarly we’d be willing to bet that the NRL grand final will be won by the Melbourne Storm or a Sydney team. You heard it here first.

Shouldering The Club’s Burden
Comedy sports injuries are always good for a laugh. Who can forget when Steve Morrow fell off Tony Adams’ shoulders while celebrating the League Cup win in 1993, or when Greame Le Saux was ruled out for two weeks after slipping in the shower and landing on a cucumber which went right up his anus. Poor old Graeme; for it to happen once is bad enough – but the same thing happened to him on no less than four separate occasions, variously involving a bicycle pump, a banana and Sol Campbell’s mobile phone. How unlucky can you get?! Well now Estudiantes manager Mauricio Pellegrino can be added to the list of laughable maladies after damaging his shoulder while angrily directing his players from the touchline. Former Liverpool player and assistant manager Pellegrino only moved to Estudiantes earlier this year after being sacked by Valencia following several rows with players. But while he’s hoping to make a name for himself as a bit of a tough guy, the 41-year-old became probably the first boss to get injured on the touchline while handing out orders. The incident happened during Estudiantes’ clash with CA All Boys, which they won 1-0. Pellegrino was ordering one of his players around, and used some arm signals to make sure the message got across. However, moments after he began, Pellegrino was forced to stop and retreat to the bench after his shoulder popped out of its socket. The boss was able to joke about it in the media after, but the nasty injury has left him in plenty of pain. “I have never seen a coach pick up an injury before,” he told Argentine television. “I have a chronic injury to my shoulder, and it came out of place.” If Pellegrino wants advice on things “coming out” he should probably talk to Greame Le Saux.
Starbursts: Made To Make Your Eyes Water
We all have our lucky charms and superstitions. For example, whenever one of BBM’s flat mates goes out on the pull, he’s always sure to take his “lucky hanky” with him. The rest of us laugh at this silly superstition, especially when he goes through the ritual of dousing it in chloroform and hiding it in his inside pocket, but fair play to him, he comes back with a different woman every night, most of them slumped over his shoulders looking barely conscious. We’ve not seen him since the trial, but the point is people will go to strange lengths to appease the gods of fortune – as Washington Redskins running back Chris Thompson proved recently when he revealed his regular match-day ritual. Apparently Thompson makes sure he has a red and yellow Starburst with him for every game. He’ll eat the yellow one before the game, and put the red one in his sock to eat at half-time – presumably to make sure all the juices are nicely marinated in there. “Yeah, it sounds kind of nasty, but I’ve done it ever since high school,” Thompson told Monumental Network in DC. “It tastes the same.” Nice work. Of course, football is littered with famous pre-match rituals - like Laurent Blanc kissing the top of Fabien Barthez’s slaphead before every game, Ronaldo refusing to shoot towards goal in the prematch warm-up, and Genaro Gatusso always using the same sweater that he wore on his first day, regardless of the weather or the temperature. Less well known is John Terry’s superstition of shagging a teammate’s wife before each game or Arsene Wenger sacrificing a youth team player “of virgin blood” to appease Satan whenever Arsenal play in Europe.
We all love laughing at fat people. It’s why God created Americans. Just look at popular Yank shit-com Mike and Molly. Ok so the jokes are cack – but look at the fat Americans! Hilarious! So what use is a fat man if he loses weight? Nothing, that’s what. Sure, he may live slightly longer to the delight of his beloved family, but what good is that to the rest of us who don’t know him? To us he’s just a feckless waste of overly flappy skin who we can no longer point and laugh at. Which is why we’re firmly behind Bradford City’s anti-fatty stance (or should that be pro-porker?). Basically the Bantams have told their mascot of 20 years, Lenny Berry, to do one – although the reason why depends on who you ask. If you ask Lenny, it’s because he’s recently lost seven stone due to diabetes and his City Gent persona - who dons a bowler hat, briefcase and Bradford top - no longer looks like an amusing larger-than-life comedy character. Instead he looks more like someone who should be helping police inquiries into Operation Yewtree. “I used to have supporters chant things at me, like who ate all the pies?” said the scrawny lump. “I used to get them going and then grab my belly. I play the part of the mascot though, through my face and my eyes. I’ve always had a good rapport with fans.” It’s a tale to melt the stoniest of artery-clogged hearts. Except for the fact the club tells a different tale. Apparently Bradford claim Lenny’s weight had nothing to do with his sacking, and instead was about his “unsuitable” language and a safety report from last season in which one club said that Berry had been a “pain” and would not be invited back. “He had been pushing the boundaries,” whined club director Roger Owen. “It was not an issue of weight.”
New Coach But Same Old Sorry Wallabies?
The challenges keep on coming for Australia as they face South Africa for the Mandela Challenge Plate on Saturday 7th September at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane (8.05pm AEST). This should prove to be a decent test for the recovering Wallabies after their highly amusing, debilitating loss to the British and Irish Lions. With new coach Ewen McKenzie at the helm either the Wallabies come out fighting or they have just uncovered someone else to blame. Let’s face it, things could hardly get any worse and the much-anticipated resignation of Kiwi Robbie Deans has created some modicum of optimism amongst fans. Like typical Australian sports fans following a defeat, many are eager to imagine that the Lions defeat simply did not happen (2-1 it finished just in case any of you forgot) and concentrate on the future. Alas, the omens for a reaffirming victory do not look good for the Wallabies as they were humbled 31-8 the last time they faced the Springboks in Pretoria last year. While home advantage was not enough to defeat the Lions it proves vital in this clash as a few weeks prior to that defeat, Australia did manage to overcome South Africa 26-19 in a more closely fought encounter in Perth. As The Lions tour indicated, there is vast room for improvement for this Australian side, but don’t write them off just yet.
Even Kerry’s Coach Doubt They Have A Chance Against Dublin
Dublin face Kerry in the second semi-final of the Gaelic Football Championships in a match-up that is already being seen by many as a formality. There are favourites, there are dead certs… and then there is your own coach declaring that you do not stand a chance. If judged on form, then Kerry are clear underdogs after an uninspiring quarter-final performance against Cavan. While the unpredictable virtue of all sport may be used as insipiration, Kerry’s coach Eamonn Fitzmaurice believes that his team “will not be given a snowball’s hope in hell against Dublin.” This could prove to be a masterstroke from Fitzmaurice; should they win he can claim it was due to his reverse psychology and if they lose then he can boast that Dublin was always going to win, anyway.
Hair-raising TV Hits Colombia
If The Kingdom have taken anything away from their past few performances, it is that they cannot allow Dublin to rack up an early lead. Much of Fitzmaurice’s concern comes from the nasty habit that his team have developed of fading in the second half with their lacklustre showing against Cavan as a telling example. Against Cavan, they did just about enough for a 0-15 to 0-9 win; to repeat the pattern against Dublin could be criminal.
Remember when Tino Asprilla publicly shafted Darlington by mysteriously disappearing in the shock-transfer-that-never-was a few years ago? Hilarious. Remember Carlos Valdarama’s “Sideshow Bob” hair at the 1994 World Cup? Crazy! And what about the time a fan shot and killed Andres Escobar for scoring an own goal at the World Cup? Ok, that wasn’t so amusing, but still, riveting stuff.
After Croke Park will host this second semi-final on Sunday September 1st with kick-off due at 3.30pm local-time (12.30am, Monday 2nd September) the victors will face either Tyrone or Mayo in the Final on Sunday 22nd September.
Ever since Rene Higuata scorpion-kicked his way into the public consciousness, we Brits have been fascinated by the poodle-haired stars of the Colombian national team.
With big perms, big egos and the sort of big habits that would keep Breaking Bad’s Walter White in business for a good few years, what’s not to love about Los Campasinos – a nickname that we’ve literally just made up. It was perhaps inevitable, therefore, that someone in TV land would come up with the idea of doing a show about them – which is the idea behind the show ‘La Seleccion’ – or ‘the national team’. The show follows the stories Higuita, Valderrama, Asprilla and Freddy Rincon and how they made their names in the 80s and 90s. On the pitch they took Colombia to three consecutive World Cups from 1990-1998, some feat considering they had only qualified once before. Off the pitch, they dragged their reputations through the mud. Higuita, for example, may still be known as that mental keeper who did that backflip thing against England – but he’s also been suspended for using cocaine and was briefly imprisoned after taking money to mediate in a kidnapping. Meanwhile, Rincon has been arrested several times for money laundering while Asprilla keeps getting charged on firearm offences. Suddenly Ryan Giggs shagging Imogen Thomas doesn’t seem so controversial.
In the Hurling Final Clare face Cork on Sunday 8th September at Croke Park. This will be Clare’s first All-Ireland Final in 11 years and they have the added incentive of a score to settle. Cork have already beaten Clare this season with a 0-23 to 0-15 victory in the semi-finals of the Munster Championships back in June. The match will be a close one and Clare come into the Final in good form having secured a seven-point win in their semi-final against Munster rivals Limerick. The result barely looked in doubt from the 13th minute when a Darach Honan goal put the Banner County in control. As an aside to the game itself there is another well worn issue to consider that has already proved wholly tedious this summer. Yup, you’ve guessed it. While The Ashes opened up a whole can of worms over the use of technology in sport, there could be a new controversy brewing. While HotSpot left many still guessing, in this case it is Hawkeye to blame. The issue has arose following a bizarre call in the opening minute of the Galway-Limerick minor game which preceded the Clare-Limerick semi-final. Initially, referee Fergal Horgan awarded a score only for an umpire to rule it out having been contacted by the meddling review official via his earpiece. Horgan eventually signalled for confirmation from Hawkeye, and despite the word ‘miss’ appearing in REALLY BIG LETTERS on the big screen, the replay proved otherwise with the ball shown to have passed between the posts. Awkward. In a development that will no doubt delight meme-creators, Specsavers only happen to be the sponsor of GAA’s Hawkeye.

ASK CRYSTAL & JOKES
Ask Crystal Dear Crystal, I need some advice on patenting as I think I’ve invented a tool that could revolutionise the construction industry. I don’t want to give away too many details, but basically it’s a hand tool consisting of a thin wooden handle with a head of solid metal that is attached at a right angle to the wood, used for striking or pounding. I find it’s ideal for attaching nails to pieces of wood. Thoughts? Sincerely, Scott Dear Scott, That sounds suspiciously like a hammer to me Scott, and they’ve already been invented. You fuckwit. Dear Crystal, My boyfriend is a useless lazy lump. I asked him to do some cleaning the other day and he said he’d already hosed some poo off the back of the toilet when he went for a piss and that was his cleaning for the week. I asked him to do some shopping and he bought the Game of Thrones books online. I asked him to do the washing up and he poured sulphuric acid onto his hands just to get out of it. How can I get the lazy git to start pulling his weight? Yours, Lisa
Dear Lisa,
Dear Crystal,
Sounds like you’ve got a real keeper there. The best motivator to get men to do what you want – other than a lesbian three-way – is guilt. Now this guy sounds like a real tough nut to crack, so you’ve really got to go to town on him. If I was you, I’d try the “Crystal corpse switch” technique – a method I came up with in the 60s to get Kirk Douglas into bed. You’ll need to get friendly with someone down at the local mortuary and offer to pay them to borrow the corpse of a dead prostitute for 24 hours. The going rate for a dead whore is about $200 – just ask Olly Murs, he gets through three a week. Filthy git. Anyway, that night, get your boyfriend blind drunk and when he falls unconscious, put the prostitute in the bed next to him. When he wakes up, he’ll freak out and think he’s killed her. First tell him you forgive him, then tell him to clean up the house while you take care of the body. By the time you get back from the mortuary, the house will be spotless and you’ll have him in the palm of your hand for the rest of his life.
I’ve found it easy to grow salsify and Japanese burdock, but failed with leafy goosefoot (Chenopodium foliosum), hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis) and Good King Henry. I can’t even get the seeds to germinate. What’s the secret? From Susanne Dear Susanne, Good King Henry (Chenopodium bonus-henricus) needs a very warm temperature to germinate, so is better sown in late spring rather than early. It also thrives in moist conditions, so maybe your seed compost was a little dry (I’d say the same for C. foliosum). Dear Crystal, I’m really sick of everyone teasing me all the time. I’ve got glasses and asthma, and acne and I’m overweight, and to boot, I’ve got ginger hair and eczema. Should I just end it all? Yours faithfully, Bertha Dear Bertha, Yes.
Jokes ‘Kidnapping’ is such a strong word. I like to think of it as a ‘Surprise Adoption’. Marielle, Surry Hills What’s big, black and makes kids cry when it lands on their face? A dog being thrown off a roof. Aimee, Richmond When a man opens the car door for his wife, it’s either a new car or a new wife. Leo, Elizabeth My Chinese friend died last week. Soh Yung. Stella, Wollongong Women are like hurricanes: when they come, they’re wet and wild, but when they leave, they take your house and car. Henry, Canberra When my mum was in labour, my head got stuck so far in her fanny, the midwife had to pull me out. That’s how excited I was to see my little brother. Melville, Darwin After my accident, I woke up in hospital with a sexy nurse standing over me. She said, “You may not feel anything from the waist down.” “Fair enough,” I replied, groping her breasts. Tommo, Newcastle If online bullying has taught us anything, it’s that people would sooner hang themselves than lose a bit of weight. Chris, Darlinghurst Politicians and nappies have one thing in common: they’re both changed regularly for the same reason. Cristine, Bondi
Whenever I see my wife’s tampon string, I can’t help but wonder if she’s just an angry puppet who’s cut herself free. Freddy, Rockhampton My girlfriend told me I should try and see things from a girl’s point of view. So I looked out the kitchen window. Ryan, Coogee Finally found my wife’s G-spot! I grabbed the handle of the hoover. Dylan, Kings Cross I tried to share a meal with a homeless guy last night. He told me to fuck off and go buy my own. Eddie, Noosa After weeks of speculation, Simon Cowell has finally confirmed he’s going to be a father. I can see him now, undoing his belt so he can get a tit out to breastfeed. James, Manly At a huge cost, our local cinema has just installed luxury seude seating... I can’t help thinking that they should have waited until after the One Direction film. Tim, Wollongong A couple of hipsters walked into my clothes shop. Unfortunately, I didn’t have anything to fit conjoined twins. Mary, St Kilda My girlfriend announced to me tonight that she is leaving me for a professional model. They’re going to look a right pair now with his chiseled jaw and her crooked one. Rob, Collingwood
I’ve learned something new from watching the news today:
If you’re going to smuggle cocaine out of Peru, it’s probably best not to dress in a Mickey Mouse hat. Tina, Manly An old woman walked up to me while I was reading my paper. She asked, “Excuse me, do you know the time?”
“Yes I do,” I replied. “Now fuck off, I’m busy!” Derek, Darlinghurst I got pulled over by the police today and the officer said, “Do you know how fast you were going?”
I replied, “Obviously not fast enough.” Macy, Braintree Hangovers are nature’s way of grounding you as an adult. Nancy, Yallingup If you rearrange the letters in the words Faith and Religion, you can make “Microwave.”
No, don’t test it or question it, just believe me. Dorian, Balmain I refereed a women’s football match yesterday. It was brilliant. I booked two for muttering under their breath, one for the silent treatment and I sent one off without explanation and left her wondering what she’d done wrong. Phil, Newtown

Burlesque Is Best The art of burlesque has been growing across Australia as a distraction from the stresses of everyday life for both men and women. Whether you’re up for a hilarious show, a private dance or a good old time with your closest pals, burlesque offers a refreshingly fun night out with male and female performers. Get ready to be teased and tempted by these burlesque clubs across Australia.
B Confidential, Brisbane
One for the gents, this is a strip club with subtlety, class and professionalism, with the girls at its heart. At B Confidential, you can be confident (see what we did there?) that you will have a memorable evening, whether drinking at your table or enjoying the company of one of the girls in private. You can even book a dinner with one of the girls if you have a permanent favourite or one has just caught your eye. 455 Upper Edward Street, Spring Hill www.bconfidential.com.au
Bohemia Cabaret Club, South Melbourne
Burlesque Bar, Melbourne
With regular shows entitled Tits & Giggles and Bump & Grinda, the Burlesque Bar is Fitzroy’s major venue for fun and games. Start your Saturday night off with an Afternoon Tease from 4pm and finish it with a bang thanks to The Velvet Hat Trick at 10pm, a special treat for the ladies featuring a male stripper and topless waiter. This bar doesn’t take itself too seriously, so comedy is always thrown into every show by a host or MC. They’re also always on the lookout for new acts, so why not enter yourself as a Debut Darling and show ‘em what you got! 42 Johnston Street, Fitzroy www.theburlesquebar.com.au
Crystal Bar, Sydney
Visit GPO Sydney’s answer to the Moulin Rouge at Crystal Bar. On Saturday nights, the club is transformed into a 1920s Paris setting for Crystal Boudoir, with the bar surrounded by a pink hue and gold curtains hanging from ceiling to floor. Prepare to be hypnotized by the talents of the cat-suitwearing contortionist as she wraps her leg around her head, watch the dancers move to the music in their handmade sequined costumes and indulge in a chilled vodka cocktail while you sit back and relax to saxophone music in-between acts. 1 Martin Place, Sydney www.gposydney.com
Get your senses flowing and receive an experience to remember at Bohemia Cabaret Club. The Night Garden Theatre offers dinner under the stars thanks to the glass ceiling and showcases burlesque talent from all over the world. Join Madame Natalia and her buxom girls and “Boylesque Boys” at Cirque Des Femmes, a saucy show full of character, cheek and plenty of flesh! If you’re looking for something a little more disturbing, the Burlesque Underground hosts a live-action role play of erotica, fantasy and fetish. Discover the shocking delights of the characters as they discover the joys of sexual revolution every Thursday. 226-228 Coventry Street, South Melbourne www.bohemiacabaretclub.com By Charlotte Mellor

RECRUITMENT NEWS
Fund Your Travels Been spending your cash too much and worried about having to drag your penniless feet back home? Australia is bursting with employment opportunites - all you have to do is find the right one for you. The glory of having a Working Holiday Visa is the fact that you have the freedom to gain employment in any industry in the Australian work place, whilst earning some seriously good cash and enjoying the temperate climate! What more could you ask for? Employment opportunities are endless so you’re spoilt for choice: Whether you want to get physical with some construction labouring; get mentally challenged in metropolitan office life; or have fun and frolic behind a bar serving cocktails! Everyone is different, with different interests and goals that they wish to pursue whilst in Australia, so you’ll be glad to know there are a variety of job types to suit your individual personality and work ethic. It’s always best to get stuck into work as soon as you get to Australia. Boy, is it an expensive place to travel in! Alcohol, accommodation, food, the inevitable shopping trips… it adds up and unless you’re earning that better Aussie wage, you will find your funds dribbling away faster than a leaky goon bag. Once you’re in a job and you start filling that desolate bank account, you’ll definitely be in a better financial position to really have some fun. But of course it would suck if you grabbed any old job in a bout of sheer “I-need-a-job-or-my-travelsare-over” panic. You don’t want to spend valuable Working Holiday time in a job that you despise! Figure out what you’d like to try, ask around to friends, family, and other travellers and see what you think would suit you best. Not sure what the options are? Well, here are a few jobs that will suit most people with a Working Holiday Visa…
Hospitality
The obvious first choice would have to be hospitality. Cafes, bars, clubs, pubs, restaurants – you get the picture! They offer great wages, flexible hours, an awesome social life and a laidback lifestyle which is more than attractive to those traveling around the country. If you have any bar experience, a cocktailcreating past or coffee-making skills then you’ll be an attractive candidate. For many this is the perfect job type, allowing workers to experience Oz in the day while still earning a healthy salary at night. Like with every job, there are the pros and cons. Pro: It is a great way to really get immersed in a community and meet the locals in the area. It’s a
52 www.bbmlive.com
completely different social experience to what you’d have being holed up in an office Monday to Friday! On the other hand, the Con: You need to be wary of people ripping you off and using you as slave labour. Some employers are known to see backpackers as easy prey to be worked to the bone for next to nothing. Know that (despite not being a citizen) you have working rights and should have the appropriate breaks, so be on the lookout for anyone trying to take the piss in your employment.
Admin/Office
While on this visa you can’t work for more than 6 months with one employer, which sometimes works against you as most employers want long-standing members on their team. But this is the great thing about office temping work. You get to experience a wide variety of working environments in places that need your assistance, without having to commit to a sole role for an extended period of time. These jobs will usually offer higher pay than in hospitality, less physical stress - as you’re not running to every customer’s beck and call - and you’ll encounter less drunks (hopefully), also there’s the added perks of more routine and stability in working hours. If you like to be able to have a good time in your evenings and weekends, perhaps consider office/admin work as you’ll be able to have those times off to experience the night life. Just be sure to pack some smart clothes for when you get an interview. The usual pencil skirt, smart black trousers, clean and ironed shirts usually go down well. And remember don’t wear thongs (flip flops to us Brits) as you’ll probably not even get that shamefully dressed foot in the door.
Blue Collar Work
So you’re in Oz and you’re keen to stay. Like, real keen? Then you’re one of the hordes of travellers who arrive in Australia with their sights fixed on finding a skilled job vacancy that will sponsor them. This could be your golden ticket to staying, living and working in the land of sun, sea and kangaroos! These jobs are highly sought after but only those ‘skilled’ individuals will make the cut and qualify for sponsorship. These skills could include labour positions such as plumbers, engineers, electricians and carpenters, and they’ll make you highly attractive to employers. The hours will be long but
the wage you get will make it worthwhile. With a job like this, you can rake in the dollars and go off adventuring with not a financial worry in the world; or settle down with a permanent visa and take your time exploring your new homeland. With office work (temping or skilled) it is really recommended to take some time out of your excited countdown to your Australia trip and fine tune your C.V. before you leave your home country. Make sure it’s well-prepared and tailored to whichever industry you want to pursue so you can seize any opportunity you find. Who wants to be squatting at their hostel’s computer phaffing around with a C.V. when you could already be handing it to your prospective boss?
Tourism
For those who are fun loving, adventurous and infatuated with the travelling lifestyle, the tourism industry could be your ideal job! Who wouldn’t want to help book people’s adventures? Or maybe lead camel tours on the beaches of Broome? Fun is guaranteed, you’ll be boosting other’s traveling experiences (and definitely your own!), plus it could mean you’re on a beach location all day, every day! Living the dream. And what makes it even better is that it’s an actual job and you’ll get paid to do it. A bit of advice to take though, is to keep in mind that even though hostels are easy, they are an expensive way to live when staying in one spot for long periods of time. They will have discounted weekly or monthly rates, but it usually works out cheaper to rent a room in a shared house. There are plenty of house sharing websites, e.g. Gumtree, with plenty of rooms going, and even though you might need to sift through the freaks as usual, you’re bound to find something good. Yeah, you might need to pay a pesky bond (deposit) when you move in, but think of it as ‘secret savings’ as you’ll get it back when you move out! So, fellow travellers, be bold and proactive in your job hunt! Pound the streets with your C.V and sign up to a temp agency (or three) to really go for the employment that will massively boost your travel fund. MIGRATION NEWS
Visas & Points Explained
Australia continues to have huge skill shortages and a buoyant economy with low unemployment, an almost perfect storm for anyone looking to work and perhaps settle in Australia. The government’s 2013-2014 migration program allows for 190,000 permanent visas to be issued this year. 128,550 of these visas will be for skilled workers. This number does not include the tens of thousands of temporary employer sponsored four year visas granted every year. To access these skilled visas, you will need to have qualifcations or work experience in an occupation that appears on the governments Consolidated Skilled Occupations List or CSOL. You can check the list at http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/generalskilled-migration/pdf/csol.pdf The CSOL includes Nursing, Teaching and almost all the general trades; let’s have a look at some visa options and how to prepare for them… Anyone coming to Australia on a one-year working holiday visa has some advantages, it’s the easiest and cheapest visa to come out and see Australia and find work with. It’s quite common to see working holiday visa holders with skills being offered sponsorship by employers or applying for permanent residence visas. If you are thinking of looking for long-term work and visas, some forward planning will go a long way. Nurses and Teachers need to get registered in whichever Australian state they wish to work in. You can do this before you come to Australia by applying to the state registration boards in advance. For example, teachers in NSW need to register with the NSW Dept of Education and Communities; for more information visit… http://www.dec.nsw.gov.au/ about-us/careers-centre/school-careers/teaching/ your-teaching-career/trained-teachers/apply-toteach The process of getting registered or licenced can take two or three months so plan accordingly. Tradespeople do not need to be state registered to work for construction businesses. Plumbing and Electrical are licenced trades and in most states you can work under the licence of the employer but getting local licensing will help with finding better, paid work and can assist with some of the skilled visa applications.

Gather up all your qualifcations and any work references you have. Get your CV or resume drawn up. Either bring these to Australia with you or colour scans of all the paperwork and email it to yourself. Then you can easily send it on to prospective employers and have a head start on documents for your visa applications. So if you’re here in Oz and you’ve found that dream job and want to stay, ask the employer if they will sponsor you. This is often the fastest way to get a work visa for 4 years; these visas can be approved in as little as a few weeks. There will then usually be options to move to a permanent visa at a later stage. If you are a registered nurse or teacher, you will most likely meet the criteria to be sponsored. Trades people will need either a trade qualifcations; UK NVQ level 3, the Irish FETAC level 6-7, or have at least three years full time experience in the trade. You will need very good evidence of your paid, on the job, work experience. If you can’t find or don’t want an employer sponsor, then look at the options to apply through the points tested “Skill Select” System including the 189; 190 or 489 visas. The process to get these visas is going to take 6-12 months so good planning is a must. If you are in Australia; think about getting your second working holiday visa set up so you have more time, and start saving. Permanent visa application fees will be $3,520 upwards, and more for skills assessment etc. Start of by getting your points assessed. You need 60 points to be eligible to make an Expression of Interest (EOI) for these visas. Points are awarded for age, qualifcations, English ability and work experience. If you’re aged between 25 and 32 you get 30 points for age. A trade qualifcations gets ten points and degree; 15 points. Sitting the IELTS English test and getting a good score of seven or eight will get ten or 20 points respectively. You get five points for three years overseas work experience or one year in OZ in your occupation. It’s really important to be accurate with your point’s assessment, for more information visit http:// www.immi.gov.au/skills/skillselect/index/visas/ subclass-190/. And if you get stuck, consider consulting a registered migration agent for help with this. Help is available at http://mia.org.au/ If you have 60 points or more, the process will be to: 1. Get your migration skills assessment (allow three months) 2. Make your Expression of Interest Application 3. Apply to a State Government for Nomination (if needed) 4. Wait to be invited to apply for your visa 5. When invited, apply for the visa and wait about three months for processing.
If you are in Australia when you apply for your visa, you will get a bridging visa to allow you to stay here while you wait for the new visa processing. Each occupation type has a different assessing body for Migration Skills Assessments – costs range from $300 to more than $2,000 depending on the occupation. Tradespeople should check TRA at: http://www.innovation.gov.au/ SKILLS/SKILLSASSESSMENT/ TRADESRECOGNITIONAUSTRALIA/Pages/ default.aspx Nurses go to ANMAC: http://www.anmac.org.au/international-services Teacher should look at AITSL: http://www.aitsl.edu.au/ Allow $300 to take IELTS English tests, and around $400 for medical and police checks near the end of the process.
