CHECK THIS OUT - SYDNEY By the turn of the century the Jenolan Caves was a well established and thriving tourist destination, however some of the greatest discoveries were yet to come. In 1903 James Carvossa Wiburd was appointed Superintendent of Caves, initiating one of the most sustained and successful periods of exploration. Wilson had concentrated his efforts in the northern limestone, Wiburd, along with Jenolan guides Jack Edwards and Robert Bailey, were to push ever deeper into the caves south of the Grand Arch. The River and Pool of Cerberus Caves were discovered in 1903. In 1904, the “Temple of Baal”, “Orient” and “Ribbon” caves. The time and energy involved in these discoveries cannot be overstated, and as had been the case with Wilson, the exploration was made solely by candlelight. The discoveries made by Wiburd truly elevated Jenolan to the status of a world class cave system with the opening of the River (1904), Temple of Baal (1909) and Orient (1917) as show caves. The history of Jenolan and the exploration of the caves is far from complete with no one knowing, quite just what lies ahead. With numerous discoveries being made throughout the Twentieth Century including that of the Barralong Cave in 1963 by guides Ron Newbould and John Culley. In more recent years an increasing amount of exploration has been completed by registered speleological societies, which included the discovery of the Spider Cave in 1975 by Bruce Welch. Today Jenolan is the most popular tourist destination in country NSW, with over 250,000 visitors annually enjoying the wonders of the eleven show caves, and an ever increasing number entering into the world of adventure caving.

The Jenolan Caves A wonderous maze of natural beauty, if you’re in the Blue Mountains region and fancy an adventurous furrow into the underworld of stalagmites and stalactites then the Jenolan Caves are the perfect destination for you. Marvel at the natural crystals and unique rock formations as you pass through the intricate alcoves, dimly lit so you can take in the true essence of the Jenolan Caves. Walking through, your jaw is permanently set to drop. The huge columns are highlighted with the carefully depicted lighting, as crystals sparkle and stalagmites and stalactites fight their way from the cave walls to create spectacular formations. The Jenolan Caves were known to the local Aboriginal population for thousands of years as Binoomea, which means “dark places”. However when Europeans arrived in the area in 1838, pastoralist James Whalan

“discovered” the network of caves. According to legend however, Whalan was not the first European to set eyes on the caves, with that honour going to James McKeown, an ex-convict and possibly an outlaw, reputed to have been using the caves as a hideout.
James Whalan and his brother Charles were responsible for the discovery of several openings over the succeeding years, with the Elder cave, being discovered in 1848, the first “dark cave” to be explored.

Despite government control, there was little control over the caves and early visitors could break formations and take souvenirs from the caves, creating irreparable damage that is still visible today in caves including the Elder and Lucas. It was not until 1872 that this practice became illegal, thanks largely to the efforts of John Lucas, the local member of Parliament. The Lucas Cave bears his name to commemorate his part in the preservation of this fragile and irreplaceable environment.

If you fancy embarking on a tour, you’ll come across one chamber of the cave, called The Cathedral, mainly because it looks a bit like one, and it has been the scene of many a wedding and, bizarrely, classical music recital. The acoustics are amazing as you will find out when a tour guide will most likely blast out some music, that will echo around in a way you’ve probably never heard before. If you’re just wanting to have a look round and take pictures, then that option is obviously available, but those brave tourists looking for an adventure, why not go on a proper caving tour that will involve all manner of crawling, climbing and squeezing. However this really isn’t for the faint hearted or even the mildly claustrophobic. So make sure you now your limits before embarking upon this type of tour.

In 1860 the Lucas cave (one of the most famous and largest of the current show caves), was discovered by Nicholas Irwin and George Whiting. It was not until 1866 however that the caves were brought under direct government control. In 1867, Jeremiah Wilson was appointed as “Keeper” of the “Binda”, or “Fish River” Caves, the Aboriginal word Jenolan (“high mountain”) not being adopted until 1884.

The Blue Mountains he Blue Mountains are the perfect place to escape from the city to. A wonderous expanse of lush green rolling knuckles of scenery will leave you in awe of the natural beauty before you. Named the Blue Mountains, does sound a bit odd when you’re confronted by the amount of vegetation, however the name is down to the bluish vapour that rises from the mountain ranges, due to the copious amount of eucalyptus trees. The blue haze can only be viewed from miles away. The Blue Mountains are one of the most scenic and beautiful spots to visit in Australia and offer some of the best outdoor activities and adventures anywhere in the county. The walks up into the mountain forests are truly amazing and everything from caving to abseiling to canoeing is right at your doorstep. When you talk to most people, particularly those who have just landed Down Under, they seem to be under the impression that the Blue Mountains sit out in the wilderness on the edge of the outback, impossible to get to for the common man. A place that you shouldn’t even think about going to if you have but a few days to spare. This could not be further from the truth, the mountains actually lie a stones throw from Sydney’s CBD, and if you really wanted you could be there and back in a day - although once you get there you’ll be guaranteed to want to stay longer.

The heart of the mountains are just a two hour train journey from Central Station in the city, and even less time if you wish to hire a car. When you get there you are sure to be dazzled by the scenery. Wherever you go in the mountains you are guaranteed a Kodak moment, so be sure to take your cameras. There epicenter of the Blue Mountains is Katoomba where you’ll find plenty of hostels, loads of places to grab a bite to eat, and more importantly, a few local boozers to catch up with some serious drinking - although be warned most hostels won’t let you bring alcohol with you so save the glug for the pub. As well as offering some of the best views, waterfalls and scenic lookouts in the mountains, Katoomba is also home to the famous Echo Point where you can see some awesome views of the undoubtedly spectacular Three Sisters, a three pillar rock formation that springs up out of the mountainside. With a bevvy of natural beauty to behold, make sure you get yourself down to the Blue Mountains, be it for a day or even a long weekend. CHECK THIS OUT - SYDNEY Snorkelling In Sydney Not always the most commonly thought of location for snorkelling, due to more popular locations such as the Great Barrier Reef, you may think it a little odd to go snorkelling near to such a bustling city. However we can reveal some excellent snorkelling locations around Sydney. Sydney boasts phenomenal wrecks and interesting rock formations to explore. Among the many sea creatures you may discover are fish like the Port Jackson shark, wobbegong, snapper, bream, silver batfish, blue groper, and weedy sea dragon, as well as giant cuttlefish and giant ray. The best areas to go snorkelling are in the outer harbour areas and along the rocky sections facing the Pacific, such as Clovelly Bay, Gordon’s Bay and Bundeena. Visibility in Clovelly’s sheltered inlet is particularly high, giving a perfect view of scalyfin, toadfish and octopi as well as Clovelly’s celebrity, attention loving fish: Bluey the groper. Gordon’s Bay is just around the corner from Clovelly and harbours Sydney’s only underwater nature trail. Snorkeler’s are guided from one hotspot to the next via a chain on the ocean floor that forms a 500m loop past reefs and kelp forests. Bundeena is perfect for those who fancy a day trip: hidden away in National Parkland, Bundeena plays host to four gorgeous beaches. Gunyah Beach is particularly good for snorkelling, and is way more secluded than the other beaches. There are any number of snorkelling trips and packages offered in Sydney all ready to take you to these and many other lovely little Sydney snorkelling spots. Almost all will offer training and snorkelling adventures to suit all skill levels from a complete beginner, right through to the most advanced snorkeler. If you are a beginner, instructors can guide you through all of the required skills to become a safe and competent snorkeler. Some of the skills you may learn include: flotation techniques, clearing your mask, clearing your snorkel, surface swimming, surface dives and underwater manoeuvres. Rest assured, snorkelling is an activity that is suitable for all ages and skill levels, so no matter what, there’s nothing to stop you giving it a go and having a ball exploring some of Sydney’s underwater wonders. For more information about snorkelling in Sydney check out our Things To Do Section on www.bbmlive.com. By Rebecca Jones

There was a time when Melbourne was considered Australia’s premiere city, but its acclaim was lost when a battle with Sydney to be titled capital ended with the creation of Canberra. Whilst Sydney went on to be known for the beauty of Sydney Harbour, Melbourne sunk from note on many a tourist’s trail. However, from the hustle and bustle of the CBD through to its notoriety as the spiritual home of Australian Arts - Melbourne is busy city that never rushes but equally never sleeps - which has no doubt lead to it ranking as one of the world’s top three most liveable cities! Though the chance to see the world’s largest tram network is hardly a major pulling factor, Melbourne’s bustling laneways must prove something of a pull. The tiny alleys are bustling with small businesses and equate to graffiti heaven! However, if urban jungle isn’t your scene - why not lose yourself in one of Melbourne’s many parks? There is a reason for the state of Victoria being known as the garden state, and its state capital sees no reason to be an exception to the rule. Whilst Melbourne is packed to the brim with parks, the most impressive lies just a five minute walk from the CBD. The Royal Botanic Gardens boast plant species both common and rare alongside beautiful birds - be careful as you may end up feeling like Alice in Wonderland! And for those sports fans - don’t forget that Melbourne has been home to both the Olympics (1956) and Commonwealth Games (1996) and also hosts everything from the Australian Open (tennis) to the F1 (motor sports) and of course, the Melbourne Cup (horse racing). This leads to a plentitude of stadium tours and exercise opportunities. Last, but of course not least, before we take a closer look at some of Melbourne’s suburbs, a moment has to be taken to celebrate Melbourne’s most famous street - Ramsay Street. Whilst Erinsborough may only exist in the land of TV, pop down to Pinoak Court in Vermouth South and you may just recognise a house or two...

Musical Comedy

With acts such as Tim Minchin coming up in the city during February alongside the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, music comedy has never been so good. At Melbourne Zoo during March, RockWiz live play a night of comedy and music; Julia Zemiro, Brian Nankervis and the expanded RocKwiz Orkestra rock their SBS for a night under the stars- at a zoo- sounds pretty funny to us. All Over Melbourne

Melbourne International Comedy Festival

A corker of an opportunity to catch the next big thing and this year the joke is on Melbourne to make more than a minute of laughter as the comedy festival is around for weeks on end. Keep your ears open to laughter all over the city because for the 26th year running, this festival is one not to be missed. 28 Mar-22 April- around Melbourne

Produced by The Squeaky Wheel, Bike Fest is an extension of a year-round mission: to get everyone in Melbourne cycling as a main form of transport, and even as a lifestyle choice.

“In five years we’ve seen a huge change in bike riding habits in Melbourne, in the streets there’s a celebration of bikes. Bike retailers are starting to embrace it, rather than seeing it as a niche activity or a sporting pursuit. It’s a lifestyle, and when you see it as that, that’s where you get the greatest benefit out of it.” Whether or not you buy into Caroll’s point of view, Bike Fest is definitely a lot of fun and well worth a visit for its market, performances, design competition and of course, smokin’ hot rides. Bike fest consists of eight key projects, the first being Treadlie Market, which is a free event running over 3 days from Friday 17 February to Sunday 19 February. The market will include a Film Night, Swap Meet, ‘Best in Show’ competition, Carnival Day and the Better by Bike Awards ceremony. One of the hottest events will be Bikefest BMX Jam, held on the last day of the festival, Saturday 17th March. This event will see renowned choreographers Antony Hamilton and Byron Perry take to the CBD’s best skate park to direct some of Melbourne’s most skilled BMX riders in a bike dance. Yep – that’s right, a bike dance. On March 15th there will also be the Bike Runway Fashion Show: an audience participation event that will encourage average Joe’s up onto the stage to strut their stuff in the best from Melbourne’s boutiques. And we’re not just talking embarrassing Lycra shorts either. According to Runway co-producer Lara McPherson, a growing number of Melbourne stores are starting to stock bike inspired clobber: “We’ve got bike-friendly shops – that community – popping up everywhere in the last few years. People who know that it’s more than transport, it’s a lifestyle.” But it’s not just about banging bikes, sick tricks and cool threads - oh no, Bike Fest also caters for families and those who just like to use their bikes for a relaxing ride, as proved by the Bikefest Village Picnic. For this event hundreds of laid-back cyclists will take to the Yarra Trail as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival finishing off with games and entertainment on the beautiful lawns of the Abbotsford Convent. Still not won over to the two-wheeled way? Well, there’s just no pleasing some people, but for those of you who are, keep an eye on www. melbournebikefest.com.au for news and announcements. Get guilt free and green and saddle up. 17th February – 17th March 2012 By Rebecca Jones

Your Alternative Guide to Valentine’s Day So, just because we have been celebrating the day of the 14th February since 270AD, does not mean that we have to do so in the stereotypical sloppiness of the traditional Valentine’s Day. Granted, everyone loves a good slap up meal, a bottle of wine and the feeling of love in the air; but there’s so many ways to celebrate love this year. Even if you’re not lovin’ anyone but good old me, myself and I, celebrate Valentine’s Day in style with our alternative guide to Valentine’s Day date ideas.

Sky Dive

Everyone is slightly curious when it comes to doing a skydive (even if they don’t want to admit to it). The feeling of free falling for one whole minute has got to get you thinking‘BRING IT ON!’ Definitely top of the list when it comes to alternative Valentine’s Day dates. This dive takes to the skies with the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Blue Mountains. As you jump from the plane and freefall into Sydney City looking onto the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge you’ll take in some of the most spectacular vistas of your lifetime. Tick that one off the bucket list!

Hot Air Balloon Ride

If you fancy a trip into the skies without the fear that you are going have to jump back down to the Earth, then why not take a hot air balloon ride with that special someone. The hot air balloon will take you slowly and gracefully through the atmosphere ascending you to dizzy new heights. Viewing Sydney in the early morning light will make for one of the most memorable Valentine’s Days of your life. You can choose the route you wish to take but do take into consideration that there is no engine, just the wind to take you to your destination and so paths sometimes cannot be chosen. The Hawkesbury region is spectacular to fly over in a hot air balloon so why not give it a try.

Oceanworld, Manly- Shark Dive Xtreme

Get up close and personal with man’s most feared creatures this Valentine’s Day. With marine life from around the world such sharks, giant stingrays, sea turtles and a myriad of aquatic beings. Watch shows and feed the marine life before heading down into the water yourself on a shark dive. A thirty minute dive where perfect conditions and visibility is guaranteed, special dives even take place at night. No experience needed but you’re sure to want to dive in again and again. Not quite the traditional Valentine’s Day date but one, which is sure to leave a love-bite.

Helicopter Ride City Style

A ride of your life in the luxury of your own helicopter across the skyline of Sydney, what more could you want? See Sydney and its coastal wonders in the privacy of your own helicopter with panoramic views that will leave you breathless. The date begins in your private lounge before taking off to the stars. Sweeping through the skies over the beautiful sands and seas of Bondi, heading south over to the famous harbour. Don’t forget your camera or your photographic memory for this one, the hairs on the back of your neck will stand on end for long after Valentine’s Day has passed.

Moonlight Cinema- Centennial Park

Fancy a trip to the cinema with a twist? Instead of queuing and sitting in a sterile cinema screening somewhere in the busy city, why not head to Centennial Park for some old school loving in front of the moonlit outdoor cinema. Screenings begin at sundown when ‘Nature combines with a magnificent cityscape backdrop to set the scene for an evening of picnic celebrations. As the shadows grow long, the screen sparkles to life and the stars come out to play.’ Sounds pretty perfect and definitely an evening to remember. Not much effort required but high on the romance ratings.

Jet Boat Sydney Harbour

What a way to combine sightseeing with an alternative date. If it’s a boat ride to remember that you’re after this Valentine’s Day then climb aboard the adrenaline express and get jet boating. Sprinkle the date with the sparkling sights of the Opera House, Taronga Zoo and the Sydney Harbour Bridge- the Jet boat spins, slides, power-break stops and fishtails – which will have both you and your date’s emotions running high with excitement. Similarly, if there’s a few of you, it’s a great idea for large groups that want to just have some Valentine’s Day fun just with their mates.

Harbour Bridge Climb

Discover how deep your love is on the ‘Discovery Climb’. Taking you right into the heart of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Experience the iconic structure up close and see 360degree views of the city as far as the Blue Mountains on a clear day. A four- hour climb may not sound like the most appealing and romantic Valentine’s Day date, but this is what makes a date worth remembering and if you get through it, then you’ll know you were meant to be.

Skywalk

Made for pairs, Sydney Skywalk at Centrepoint Tower is an exhilarating 40-minute outdoor experience on top of Sydney Tower. A breath-taking 260 metres above the harbour and city, glass floor viewing platforms and steel walkways suspended over the tower’s edge will challenge anyone’s vertigo. Dressed in the ultimate flattering skysuits and harnessed to safety rails by sliding cables; a full tour of geographical, historical and cultural landmarks will literally send you over the edge. Entrance to the 4D Cinema and Sky Tower is included, making this a top-scorer for an alternative date for two.

Stars, Planets And The Love Gods

Ok, ok… So this has got to be the most traditional on the list- but this is still a Valentine’s Day date with a twist. Head to Sydney Observatory on Tuesday 14th February from 19.00 to 22.30. Venus, Goddess of Love, is the focus for the 7pm Twilight session. Jupiter and his lovers are featured in the 9pm session. Each 1 hour 30 minute tour includes a glass of wine and a light supper in historic Sydney Observatory, and a telescope dome tour and 3D Theatre session. Should the weather be overcast or wet, a cosy planetarium session is offered. If you fancy yourself as a bit of a ‘God of Love’ then this will be the perfect date. By Frankie Salt

What’s In Your Make Up Bag? This month we’re looking inside some of our reader’s make up bags to see what products you’re using, and getting the low down on what the top beauty tricks on the market are that keep you lot looking so God damn beautiful. We asked a handful of our readers what they were using and why.

For the eyes:

YSL Faux Cils Mascara – “It’s not the cheapest, but the results certainly do give you the boost of false eyelashes, without the fiddly application. However cotton buds are required for a clear up around the last line afterward.” Sophie, Darlinghurst. L’Oreal Waterproof Lash Architect – “I love this waterproof mascara as it’s great for really hot clammy days when you feel like your make up is sliding off your face. It’s also perfect as I’m always going swimming and going to the gym, so it just adds a little something to a fresh faced look.” Fay, Paddington.

For the face:

Mac Primer – “It’s the pro stuff so I gotta have it! I love this primer as it’s great for putting foundation over the top to create a smooth base, but it also works well on its own, adding a fine shimmer to give a fresh, light look.” Natalie, Surry Hills Nivea Tinted Moisturiser – “I hate looking too caked in make up so tinted moisturizer is my go to product. Not only is my skin kept hydrated, but it lightens up any dark patches under the eyes, or blotches on my chin.” Emma, Kings Cross

On your lips:

L’Oreal Infallable lip plumper – “It’s simply the best lip plumper out there. Forget spending a ton on lip venom and all those other collagen boosting ones. The L’Oreal one does just the trick, with immediate effects, I particularly like it in the shade of ‘plumping coral’ for a nice natural, yet fun peachy look.” Summer, Manly

Get Together

Rimmel Moisture Renew Bronze – “This is the best lipstick for the summer, it’s really neutral for the day time and just adds a bit of shimmer, but you can totally go for a golden goddess look by night if you apply it a bit heavier. I use the ‘Rose Bikini’ shade ‘cause I’m fair, but I think they do a few other shades.” Alex, Bondi

Playground Weekender is probably the most famous festival with Brits from all over Australia. Being hailed as one of the most fun fuelled weekend’s of the year, If you’ve been before you’ll know this is one weekend not be missed. Thanks to our friends at Playground Weekend, you and a mate could be going for free. For your chance to WIN tickets to Playground Weekender 2012, like us on facebook and tell us who you would dress up as for the fancy dress party on the last day. We want original creative ideas, so get involved and spread the word. The more entries we get the more tickets we’ll give away. What: Playground Weekender Where: Del Rio Resort, Wisewans Ferry When: March 2nd-4th 2012 More info: www.bbmlive.com/competitions Remember to always put the name of the competition you are entering when contacting us or posting on Facebook.

BBM is determined to get you guys talking, so we’re back with ‘Get Together’. We’ve been getting shedloads of emails recently from people wanting to make new friends whilst they’re traveling around Australia, looking for partying buddies, people to share excursions with, and some looking to get dating. So, because we’re a caring bunch, we’ve decided to publish them and hook you guys up! So remember, if you’re looking to double up on accommodation, want someone to go to a festival with, or want to get in contact with that hottie you met last weekend, get in touch! You can post messages on our facebook wall or email us at staffwriter@what-media.com, and feel free to include pics! Here are some of this month’s messages… “To the awesome guy in the red t-shirt and purple baseball cap I met at Bassmafia (Chinese Laundry) last Saturday: YOU-ARE-HOT. I can’t believe I was sick on your shoes… Fancy meeting up so I can make it up to you?” Drunk blonde in the pink dress. “I’m a Londoner in Sydney for the summer and I’m really keen to try out the Aussie waves at Bondi. It would be great to hook up with an experienced surfer who knows the best places to go and equipment to buy and stuff. A few beers, as well as a few laughs, will definitely be thrown in!” Mark.

“You were the barmaid with the dragon tattoo serving drinks at the Keystone bar during the Dan Deacon gig last month. You definitely got bored of the obvious jokes, but I just wanted to say: I’m not usually that annoying, I was just nervous. Give me another chance?” Stupid twat with the moustache and buttoned collar. “We were both having a high-time at Field Day, but you convinced me to stay on the ground. I was totally gutted when I lost you in the crowd and you didn’t respond to my flag waving. I’d love to catch up and thank you, if you’re up for it?” Crazy, nearly-climbed-the-rigging, blonde guy. “Anyone looking for a flatmate? After travelling for a while I’ve decided to stop off in Sydney for about 6 months, probably around Kings Cross. I’m a British guy, 25, pretty keen on a party but not everyday, and I’m not too messy though not neat (no OCD nutcases please, had enough of that with the last Mrs.).” John, Bristol. “Scottish girl, 28, looking to hook up with a shy, Melbourne guy into decent music, Darren Aronofsky films and Russian literature. Though not looking for an introverted freak with hygiene issues (Francis). If you fancy catching a movie or discussing Dostoyevsky over coffee, get in touch.” Bored of morons.

Brisbane is the capital city of Queensland situated in the South East of the State. Straddling the banks of the Brisbane River, the city is the metropolitan and commercial centre of the state and an ideal centre for finding work and accommodation. Brisbane has to be the most conveniently located of all Australia’s major cities. It offers some of the best getaways in the country, with a whole host of stunning attractions located within a few hours of its heartland. While this is still a major city, comparable with the likes of Melbourne and Sydney, there is a far more laidback feel to Brisbane, and the pace of life is considerably slower. Brisbane is a relaxed, welcoming, cosmopolitan city with very friendly locals. There are plenty of attractions within Brisbane, but its crown jewel has to be the Southbank district.

QUEENSLAND SPECIAL The Great Barrier Reef

No trip to the east coast is complete without a visit to one of the wonders of the natural world, the Great Barrier Reef. One of the most amazing spectacles known to mankind, a trip out diving or snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef, is definitely an opportunity of a lifetime that must be taken whilst in Queensland.

The Whitsundays were discovered and named by British explorer, Captain Cook on a Whitsunday - hence the name. They are located between Townsville and Mackay however Airlie Beach is the main gateway. As an added bonus the Whitsundays are also only moments away from the Great Barrier Reef.

Declared a World Heritage area in the 80s, it is the World’s largest coral reef system, made up of roughly 3,000 individual reef structures and 900 islands stretching for 2,600 kilometers up the Coral Sea of Queensland’s north east coast. Towns offering trips out to the reef start as southerly as Bundaberg and stretch all the way to the end of civilisation in Australia in Cape York.

Upon your arrival at Airlie Beach (the town where you’ll be sailing from to get out to the islands) it is best to make your arrangements at least 48 hours prior in order to guarantee a straightforward trip and be sure to make it an overnight trip since the wonders of swimming in the calm waters of the surrounding islands during the evening is an experience that would be a crime to miss out on.

The major centers such as the Whitsunday Islands at Airlie Beach, Townsville, Rockhampton and Cairns offer the best variety in trips, whereas other areas offer more personalised and smaller trips out.

Amongst the islands there is one in particular which will strike you, the astonishing Whitehaven Beach. Whitehaven is an idyllic wonderland with over 7km of pristine, white, silica sand that is so fine you can polish your silver with it. On top of this, the water that surrounds it is crystal clear and perfect for an afternoon bathe.

Depending on what you are looking for, you can either visit the inner reef, which is better for snorkeling - or outer reef, which is ideal for divers. Why not spend a week or a day out on the waters where there is so much to explore. No matter what your budget is there is a price range to suit everyone, so be sure to shop around the different tour operators to find the ideal package for you. Once out on the water you’ll be confronted with a vista that rivals even the most picturesque expanses of azure oceans. The diversity of the marine life amazing from sea turtles, to squid, olive sea snakes and the huge maori wrasse that will frequently saunter to the surface it genuinely is a plump aquatic safari on the Great Barrier Reef. Along with massive multicoloured array of smaller fish species, you can also hope to find 30 species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises and six species of sea turtles.

With the majority of Australia’s major destinations sitting on the coastline, and the added lure of the Great Barrier Reef it’s fair to say that trying out diving is a must. It’s one of the most popular adventure activities in the entire country and, when you consider the prospect of spending 30-40 minutes under the amazing coral laden waters, weaving in and out of the coral formations and colourful kaleidoscope of sea life at depths of up to 12 metres, it’s easy to see why. In fact, according to popular polls, diving the Great Barrier Reef is close to the top of the list of things you have to do before you die. It is for this reason that there are an abundance of different diving courses and day trips available across the Queensland region, as well as the rest of the country. Day trips for unqualified divers are plentiful, and involve some basic training before heading out onto the waters where you’ll likely get two dives in during a trip. For those looking to dive more often, a PADI course is highly recommended. This will certify you as a qualified diver, which means that once you’ve passed your course you can dive anywhere and can fit in more time in the water when you do head out on a boat rather than having to sit and listen to instructions.
You can become a certified diver in as little as three or four days or over a couple of weeks, depending on how fast you want to go, and courses will cost in the region of $400. While the Great Barrier Reef is the obvious choice for those looking to dive, there are dozens of destinations on the east coast, with some of the most popular spots sprouting up around major cities such as Sydney Harbour and in Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne.

Listing each one of these magnificent islands of the Whitsundays would be near enough impossible, our best tip is just to get searching and find the perfect trip for you. The type of trips offered will vary dramatically but the options are vast. There are day cruises that will take you in and amongst the islands if you’re pushed for time. However, here at BBM we highly recommend taking a few nights to get the full experience. Different companies will offer different accommodation preferences so if you shop around you’re certain to find something that meets your needs. Some boats will drop you off at a resort while others allow you to sleep right onboard - wobbly but exciting. You can travel on anything from a 70ft catamaran to an old-school sailboat so you will most definitely find something to suit your price range. Lastly, it is recommended that you book your trip in the summer months so as too miss out on the potential rain experienced in the wet season - sitting on the deck in the midst of a storm and getting drenched in rain is not a fun experience.

Airlie Beach

If you are planning to do a dive course, then it may well be worth considering doing it before you head up to the reef region. This means when you get up to the Great Barrier Reef you can get straight into your diving, rather than spending time training in classrooms and swimming pools. However for those of you who aren’t too keen on the idea of diving, and want a more free approach to viewing the wonders of the deep, then a snorkel and a pair of flippers will do just fine. With such an abundance of sealife to be seen, there’s no way the Great Barrier Reef can disappoint. When in Queensland, why not visit the Whitsunday Islands. With each island holding a tale of its own, there is a whole paradise to be explored. The Whitsunday Islands are made up of 74 islands, varying in size, with the most popular being; Hamilton Island, Hayman Island, Whitsunday Island, Long Island.

MUSIC NEWS Album Reviews

Aabenbaringen Over Aaskammen continues this rich vein of form, with the right mix of chill-out synth-pop and groove-laden dance-along tracks. Opening with the eponymous track, an instrumental beauty with bird song in the background, and a peaceful pace, the band quickly move into funkier places with ‘Det Haster!’, a subtle floor-mover of a song with a plodding, but driving bass-line and a constant beat. In fact, this track is a great analogy for the rest of the album maintaining pace and control, and round every corner is exactly what you’d expect, and you welcome it. This album is a treat, airy and atmospheric, mixing in many elements of their contemporaries (Royksopp and Whitest Boy Alive) but with the added distinction of singing nearly exclusively in Norwegian. It’s not necessarily the most exciting piece of music you’re likely to hear any time soon, but it is a fantastic piece of synth-tronica, which begs to be listened to again. Tidy, well formed and showing great potential Casio Kids Aabenbaringen Over Aaskammen is well worth a listen.

Chiddy Bang - Breakfast

The Maccabees- Given To The Wild

Chiddy Bang, the West Philadelphia (born and raised) hip-hop duo, unveil their long awaited debut album ‘Breakfast’.

Remember The Maccabees? Some of you may well have forgotten about them, but they’re back with a brand new album, ‘Given To The Wild.’ But then with seemingly thousands of indie rock bands filling the landscape, it naturally takes originality or sheer brilliance on record for a band to stand out from the crowd. And judging by the three LP’s in their discography including this one, The Maccabees don’t have either.

Formed in 2009, their alternative rap/DJ partnership first rose to prominence the following year with the MGMT sampling ‘Opposite of Adults’, a hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Since their big break, rapper ‘Chiddy’ and DJ ‘Xaphoon Jones’ have been hard at work, quickly following up with a succession of mixtapes as well as EP ‘The Preview’, even finding time to break the world record for the longest freestyle rap (nine hours, eighteen minutes and twenty-two seconds for those that are wondering) before finally completing their first full album. After a short introduction to the world of Chiddy Bang, we are immediately invited in for ‘Breakfast’, a locomotive mass of orchestral stabs overlaid with ‘Still D.R.E.’ – esque honkytonk piano, and a strong indicator of the quality to come. ‘Mind Your Manners’ is a true highlight, an incredibly infectious nursery rhyme chorus layered over a thick slice of energetic breaks and bleeps, their clever use of a children’s choir evoke memories of Jay-Z ‘s ‘Hard Knock Life’ and even Justice on ‘D.A.N.C.E’. Instant and audibly pleasing, it will surely find residence on many an upcoming summer playlist. Current single ‘Ray Charles’ immediately follows, a sumptuous blend of southern soul and hip-hop, a perfect recipe of classic 60s piano from the late great genius with a 21st Century twist. This is a track that perfectly personifies the Chiddy Bang sound, old and new, original and familiar. With an unreservedly fantastic video to match, ‘Ray Charles’ is another feather in the duo’s cap. Listening to Chiddy Bang is like diving into a melting pot of American musical eras and techniques beautifully interwoven to a create a style that manages to present itself as both commercial and underground. Layered with bright beats, catchy funk and driving soul, it’s instant on the ear and grows with every listen. There’s more than a causal nod to Outkast throughout the album, especially with the ‘Hey Ya’ inspired ‘Happening’, and several of the album’s 14 tracks would also not be out of place on a Kanye West album. There are also components of John Legend, Gnarls Barkley and Lupe Fiasco in there as well. But it is the combination of these elements that makes this album such a unique indulgence. Chiddy Bang has delivered the first great album of the year. If this is ‘Breakfast’, who knows what this supremely talented duo will cook up on their future releases.

Debut album ‘Colour It In’ was practically a facsimile of the mid-noughties British indie trends, aping The Futureheads, Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party to such a degree it was almost laughably derivative, particularly as those bands borrowed heavily from the 1980s post-punk of Orange Juice and Talking Heads in the first place. Second effort ‘Wall of Arms’ - with its laughter-inducing cover art- was a conscious attempt to mine the epic sweep of Arcade Fire, with the band even hiring the same producer who helmed the Fire’s sophomore effort ‘Neon Bible’. Once again the results were largely forgettable and uninspiring, not even close to reaching the Arcade Fire level they so clearly aspired to. And so on to third effort ‘Given To The Wild’. And perhaps not surprisingly given their previous form for bandwagon hopping, The Maccabees have picked out another band and trend to lock on to and imitate. And this time, perhaps with record label intervention, it is the turn of Coldplay and widescreen arena rock. After all, this is the most lucrative area of the alternative rock landscape to mine, right? Beginning with the meandering ambience of ‘Given To The Wild (Intro)’, the record immediately descends into the contrived atmospherics of Coldplay’s X&Y album, the notoriously calculated, EMI saving LP it most closely resembles. Indeed, ‘Child’ and ‘Heave’ are so Coldplayesque you get the feeling Chris Martin might laugh out loud upon hearing them, or alternatively have a word with his lawyers as to what action to take. Vocalist Orlando Weeks appears to be doing his best Martin impression throughout the album, as his band cracks out echo-laden guitar solos that mimic the Edge and Jonny Buckland with alarming regularity.

if you’re in break-up hell it might appeal for the mopiest of listeners. One stand out track is ‘Where I Sleep’ however it’s mostly the production that makes this a great track. Successful single ‘Heaven’ released in 2011 is the opener on this album, and of course it’s a notable track with its thumping beats. ‘Daddy’ is another track that works well as it’s lyrically strong., but ‘Suitcase’ will have you near to tears, even if you were in a good mood when you decided to put this album on. Sadly Emeli Sande’s ‘Our Version Of Events’ will be making its way into your dramatic playlists for when you’re fed up of your love life, alongside albums such as Adele’s ‘21’. Better luck next time Emeli, don’t let the bigwigs sway you from the music you really want to put out there!

Single Reviews Shearwater – Breaking The Yearlings It’s unsurprising that over the last few years Shearwater have been consistently labelled the sort of band best listened to across the full course of an album; frontman and former Okkervil River member Jonathan Meiburg’s vision has often had, quite simply, too much scope to be done justice by anything other than a full-length record. Times change however and with their latest LP ‘Animal Joy’, Shearwater have undergone a stark turnaround; maintaining the widescreen melodrama that has been the consistent mark of much of their output while writhing with something far more personal and, oddly enough, instantly accessible too.

The 2 Bears - Work “We still believe in the redemptive power of the communal dancefloor experience,” say electro-pop duo The 2 Bears. And listening to their music you’d be hard pressed not to believe them. The 2 Bears are comprised of Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard and a man going by the rather odd name of Raf Rundell, and have been receiving positive vibes from Radio 1 DJs and electronic enthusiasts alike in recent months, with their euphoric sound. Heavily indebted to the Chicago House explosion of the 1990s, The 2 Bears bring their own updated take on the genre, mixing in elements of soul, hip hop and acid house to create a heady fusion of sounds. ‘Work’ is a slice of electro-pop that is sure to be a floor filler in many clubs around the world in the new year with its sing-along chorus and thumping house beats. And The 2 Bears could potentially surpass the popularity of Goddard’s Hot Chip. Watch them roar.

Across the track’s relatively short three-minute lifespan, Meiburg exorcises demons in a far less histrionic manner than his former Shearwater and Okkervil River colleague Will Sheff, that’s not to say it’s any less effective though; if anything it’s more so, the pastoral imagery cutting deep into the music’s dense sonic space. The fact Shearwater have managed to craft something so simultaneously insular and accessible is credit to their ongoing growth as an act; constantly evolving, consistently shifting expectations and with each release moving more out of Okkervil River’s looming shadow.

‘Given To The Wild’ is not completely awful (‘Forever I’ve Known’ and lead single ‘Pelican’ boast relatively catchy riffs and choruses) but it is undeniably mediocre, and sometimes that is a harder pill to swallow. A band or solo artist that takes many risks and sometimes fails gloriously (step forward Lou Reed) will no doubt be remembered longer than one that makes such calculated steps as this. You just wonder what trend The Maccabees will cotton on to for their next album, if there is one.

Swedish House Mafia Vs Knife Party - Antidote

Noel Gallagher – If I Had a Gun. Noel Gallagher ‘s High Flying Birds release ‘If I had a Gun’, the 3rd single from his eponymous debut album, ahead of a sold out tour of Japan and Australasia. One of the more memorable tracks on a mixed bag of an album, ‘If I Had a Gun.’ scales things back from the infectious incessant rhythm of previous single ‘AKA… What a Life.’ to provide us with a traditional slice of what we know him for best. A fragile opening, reminiscent of 90s rivals The Verve’s classic ‘Lucky Man’ sets the scene before Noel’s vocal crashes in with his statement of intent. “If I had a gun, I’d shoot a hole into the sun, and love, I’ll burn this city down for you.”

Casiokids - Aabenbaringen Over Aaskammen

Emeli Sande – Our Version Of Events

Feel-good Norwegian electro-pop groove-meisters, Casiokids release their 3rd full studio album.

The long awaited debut album of 2011’s darling Emeli Sande is, to be honest, a bit of a flop. With only two good songs gracing the 14 track collection it’s a bit of a let down for such a talented singer.

Having first come to more global prominence with their 2007 album ‘Fuck Midi’ - they’ve been quietly building a reputation as purveyors of polished electro/synth-pop (although they have been known to describe themselves as Afrobeat...) as a result of having produced remarkably consistently good music, there is rarely a duff track on their albums.

Animal Joy’s first single ‘Breaking the Yearlings’ is the perfect measure of this sea change. Coming to life on a buoyant single guitar line and polyrhythmic percussion section, the track springs into action with a drumbeat that is stuttering, astounding and powerful in equal measure. Juxtapose this with Meiburg’s transcendent and captivating vocal lines and you’re left with something that previous Shearwater records have all too often lacked; an immediately strong single.

Effectively a long list of moans about failed relationships unravels itself and leaves the listener feeling far from warm and fuzzy. And if you’re feeling the slightest bit fragile, it’s not an advisable album to listen to. However

Lyrically the song is classic Noel, the effective simplicity of his imagery, that has served him and Oasis for so many years is in dominant display here on a song that fits snugly alongside other Oasis mid-tempo classics of years gone by. The track’s rather unformulaic structure is tied together beautifully by a rousing chorus of ‘aaahs’ and sweeping strings, perhaps making the song more of a sing-along epic than it might deserve.

It’s the start of 2012, electro-house is as popular and as fashionable as deck shoes with a top-buttoned shirtand this track fully takes advantage of that. If you are into your electro house with a dab of vocals and a tickle of dietary dubstep then you will probably wanna crank this track louder. However, the Swedish House Mafia trio just do not seem to be producing to the quality of tracks that they were doing a few years back. This tune seems as memorable as every other electro-house track, which is falling through the skies on a constant loop of commercial radio. This track isn’t a complete flop, there are some good drops throughout the entirety and there are some points where Knife Party’s Pendulum roots do shine through and the party kicks off. Combined with some hint of the distinctive twang of the Mafia, the record does have some scope to be a good club track. The dubstep is obviously tamed down for commercial ears but that’s to be expected of both of these artists. The vocals and lyrics aren’t much of an interest to the rest of the track, maybe an antidote from a previous track of theirs was the cause for the song. At least a dab of Dub makes the track a little chunkier. Gone are the days of the production of Swedish House Mafia’s ridiculously catchy house tracks. And what a damn shame that is.

‘If I Had a Gun’, is the sound of an artist maturing with a freedom of expression untempered by the traditional Oasis sound. Watch your back Beady Eye.

MUSIC NEWS

James Blake – Love What Happened Here One of 2011’s brightest young things - James Blake seemed to be everywhere when the hype surrounding him finally reached its zenith when he released his debut album ‘Klavierwerk’, and he returns (in a manner of speaking) here with one his songs which has been floating around for a while, but this time with an official release. ‘Love What Happened Here’ is a typical Blake track broken up synths, echoey vocals, a dirty bassline and a bit of a disjointed feel to it. You’ll have to listen to it a few times to fully appreciate what makes it all come together, but as one youtube comment puts it “...like having sex on a vanilla bed while drinking brandy.” Enjoy with your late night cig, partner of choice or nightcap.

Playground Weekender SBTRKT- BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge Session London-based electronic musician SBTRKT (pronounced Subtract) has seen his stock rise considerably in the last year or so. With an acclaimed self-titled LP release and some high profile remixing work for the likes of M.I.A. and Radiohead, the enigmatic man behind the mask has really been a busy beaver. Recently he and partner in crime Sampha took some time out to record two tracks for a live session with the BBC in their native England. The BBC Radio One Live Lounge session the duo recorded with Annie Mac includes an extended version of the minor hit ‘Hold On’ from his self-titled LP, and a cover of the Friendly Fires’ ‘Blue Cassette’. For fans of the original, the version of ‘Hold On’ is worth seeking out, if only for its extended instrumental section at the end. SBTRKT’s propulsive beats and rhythms set him apart from many of his more minimalistic contemporaries, but he is not averse to using slow-building sonics either. But like the music itself, it is purely a matter of taste as to whether you find the mournful vocals of Sampha a perfect complement to the music or overwrought and grating. By James Stapleton, Robin Lewis, William David Wilson, Alex Cull & Frankie Salt SBTRKT’s choice of Friendly Fires ‘Blue Cassette’ to cover is perhaps not much of a surprise given the knowledge that they have recently toured together and that Fires’ Ed Macfarlane is busy working in the studio with SBTRKT on his sophomore LP. The cover is perhaps not quite the equal of the original, but will no doubt please the already converted and maybe earn him a few more admirers to his growing army.

INTERVIEWS: For over 20 years Jazzie B and Soul II Soul have made their mark as musical pioneers, inspiring and paving the way for a generation of artists and achieving legendary status with global hits such as ‘Back to Life’ and ‘Keep on Movin.’ BBM’s James Stapleton caught up with the legendary Jazzie B, to toast in the New Year ahead of his upcoming live sound system tour of Australia and New Zealand. Mr Jazzie B, an honour and a pleasure to speak to you, are you looking forward to bringing the Soul II Soul sound system down under? Cheers, we’ve done it before a couple of times before, but it’s been a while and I really like some parts of Australia, I think last time we were there was the ‘Butterfly’ tour in ’97. Definitely looking forward it. What can the BBM readers expect this time round? That’s a difficult question. What can you expect but a happy face, a thumping bass for a loving race…watch out for that one. Taking it back, ‘Back to Life’ was the second single I ever bought - what was the first bit of vinyl you picked up? The first record I ever personally purchased ‘Is it because I’m black’ by Syl Johnson. I managed to inherit a lot of music from my older brothers you see, so I was very lucky. That song was a coming of age for original British black music, in fact it was featured heavily by a young Will Smith on the pilot episode of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air… Funny, every time there’s a re-run in the UK I get bombarded with emails; it was a great flagship for it all. It was a sign of the times on how things were. How do you feel music has changed over the last 20 years? I just think it’s great, I think it’s fantastic. I suppose in the early 1980s, ignorance was blindness to the facts, there really wasn’t any outlet for club music, which is why pirate stations were so big. It enabled people like Norman Jay, Giles Peterson and myself to get where we are today, thank God for pirate radio. If someone had told you 20 years ago that Dizzee Rascal, Tinie Tempah, Dappy and co. would be regularly topping the charts and flying the British flag would you have believed it? Walking through a supermarket and hearing this sort of music is what I really find significant. Tesco’s, Selfridges, and Harrods, they play it all. They call it Urban now and it’s so prevalent, it’s really quite interesting. I wouldn’t have believed that 20 years ago.

Root Manuva Rodney Smith, better known as Roots Manuva has been producing breakthrough tracks since the 90s, and is famously known for the timeless classic ‘Witness the Fitness.’ Not only has Rodders been awarded a MOBO for Best Hip Hop Act - his unmistakable voice can be heard on collaborative tracks alongside The Gorillaz, Mr Scruff, DJ Shadow, U.N.K.L.E and Leftfield to mention but a few. Roots Manuva is a man of wise British words – but let’s just say he isn’t going to give up his secrets to create the ultimate cheese on toast any time soon. Good evening from Sydney, or should I say good morning to you Rodney; how’s things back in the UK? Yeah all good. Are you calling from Australia? You definitely don’t sound Australian! Yeah it’s cold here… just getting ready to kick off the tour. It’s the usual nightmare, but we have managed to get a coach and some merchandising so yeah. The next seven weeks of going live should be good. You’ve been producing urban music since the early 90s; who would you say was your greatest influence for your debut album? A whole range of people and cultures you know like from America, all the way to Jamaica, then from the UK you’ve got bands like Massive Attack. Mixing hip hop, reggae, dub, electronica and gospel into your tracks makes your sound so distinct; was this sound a direction you had planned from the start of your music career? Or was this a natural route? How would you describe your style? It was all a bit of an accident really. I wanted to blend anything and everything. So yeah it’s a fusion of all genres. The first studio I ever went into it started as dance and reggae, but I found that when I played my stuff to reggae fans they wanted hip-hip too so it’s a mix. After your release of the first album in 1998 you were rewarded for your breakthrough with a MOBO as Best Hip Hop Act. Was this a definite highlight for you as an act? Has anything ever topped this? That was definitely a surprise. I was making that record not thinking of who would be listening. It was for a very small record label. I didn’t expect it to do so well, maybe a couple of thousand records. For me to be reviewed by a national broadsheet- it was quite disturbing at the time ha-ha! I couldn’t understand it. It was a massive surprise. It was supposed to be a kind of personal, small music project, but I guess the wide media coverage helped. Do you have a venue or a city that always seems to have the best energy when you play a gig? I’ve had some great experiences. The first place I ever toured ever, around Scotland in 1997 was a very emotional thing. It was very different, a kind of revelation. Wherever I tour though is great.

What do you make of the strength of reality TV music shows such as X-Factor? I do think the program is brilliant, it’s important and it fills a fantastic void. I grew up with Old Grey Whistle Test and Top of the Pops and that provided us with a benchmark. So if Simon Cowell called you up and said we need you to replace Louis? No thanks Simon, thanks but no thanks, I’m sure there are better candidates out there who want to make fools out of themselves. What do our pool of talent need to do now to keep British music strong? I just think they should keep doing what they are doing. The cross-collaboration of artists is great and the Afro-centricity is coming through. Tinie, Tinchy the African influence is there, which is fantastic. It will be interesting as well to see the merge of what essentially will happen in Australia and New Zealand as the Maoris and the various different Aboriginal tribes, the other indigenous people etc., come together and look at the melting pot as a whole and bring something to the fore. With so many people looking up to you, who do you look up to? My mum. Who are you listening to at the moment, which new acts get your seal of approval? So many, Izzy Dunn, Chancellor, Joseph Macwan to name but a few. You can hear all of them on my radio show, BBC London 94.9fm on Friday nights. I spoon them out mate. What’s the one song you heard you wished you’d written? I wrote it! Hahaha! But it’s kind of true, I wrote the best song I could have written. What would be Soul II Soul’s New Year message to our readers? ‘Keep on movin’ don’t stop the hands of time, find your own way to stay. A happy face and thumping bass, Merry Christmas and a Happy new year to you all.’ By James Stapleton Tour Dates: Feb 17 Soul II Soul, Tapapakanga Regional Park, New Zealand Feb 22 Soul II Soul, The Governor Hindmarsh, Adelaide Feb 24 Soul II Soul, Trak Live Lounge Bar, Melbourne Feb 26 Soul II Soul, The Ivy, Sydney

Jazzie B of Soul II Soul

Back in 2001; the epic ‘Run Come Save Me’ was released, followed the next year by ‘Dub Come Save Me’, what was the process to create the follow up album of remixes? I was always messing about and trying different things. I’m always straying away from what I am really supposed to be doing. It’s what I would call an album of off-cuts and remixes. I just took bits and stuck them together. From ‘Awfully Deep’ in 2005 to ‘Alternately Deep’ in 2006, the later album seems to have a more relaxed flow. Was there a lot of pressure for it to be better than the first? Whenever you try to make any record there’s always some excessive pressure, there’s always a journey from A to B, that’s the main priority. For performance reasons it can make it quite difficult. With this new record there will be no sister records that I will be involved with, ha-ha. I’ve had enough of them [laughing again]. For performance reasons it does get quite confusing. It does make it hard after you have worked with a band when you are trying to recreate a track. In tracks such as ‘Dreamy Days’ and ‘Witness the Fitness’, which are personal favourites of mine; you tell everyday life as it is. Do you think this is this why you have such a lot of respect from such a wide audience? It’s always been a tradition for me to create an honest and true story; it is original and basic elements, which make the guidelines of making hip-hop. I always wanted to be an everyday-man’s hip-hopper. I just always make an effort to communicate on day-to-day terms. ‘4EverEvolution’ has had nothing but rave reviews. Which track was your favourite to produce or perform from the album? In rehearsal there is so much coming up. Some tracks are so much more complex, harder to perfect and intricate. Tracks like track ‘3-Skid Valley’ are great, but if they go flat- they go really flat. So from now for the next couple of months you have got the UK and Australia tour- this tour is going to be massive! How do you feel about the upcoming tours? Yeah we have got the UK tour and then coming over to Australia and then Europe and the Festivals. It’s pretty full on. Yeah it is going to be HUGE! Back in 2003, the Guardian described your breakthrough as “opening doors for The Streets, Dizzee Rascal et al.” How do you feel about such a prestigious comment? Yeah it’s cool, I guess getting the MOBO helped urban music push forward. It’s only really now when I look back that I understand why we did so well. What else is on the cards for Roots Manuva? I bought a sound system last year so I want to work on my DJ skills and now the idea of a record company has gone, I want to incorporate my brand ‘Banana Klan’ into a micro media arts project that encompasses some kind of production workshops, and maybe some outreach work and film. Sweet. Ok, a good friend of mine back in the UK wanted to know how you make your perfect cheese on toast? Do you actually sit around drinking ten pints of bitter? Ha-ha that’s not true…maybe I used to; not so much anymore ha-ha. Thanks so much for your time Rodney, really looking forward to seeing you play in Sydney and Good Luck for the tour. By Frankie Salt

Bombay Bicycle Club

Bombay Bicycle Club

Natalie Pa’apa’a Melbourne based Blue King Brown have cemented their place as one of Australia’s premier urban acts in recent years. The eight-piece, urban roots band, led by the energetic and engaging Natalie Pa’apa’a, have been hailed by urban music fans and critics alike. The band and their attitude and music have also earned the respect of their fellow artists, with Serj Tanki and no less than Mexican guitar legend Carlos Santana hailing them as “the voice of the street and the band of the future.” Blue King Brown’s music is a heady and original fusion of urban styles, blending in roots, dancehall, rock, afrobeat and hip-hop, while the hard-hitting and often political lyrics of Pa’apa’a lends them a social conscience and awareness that lifts them above the empty and plastic pop stars of today. The band’s latest record, Worldwize Part 1 North & South, has earned them a lot more positive press, and they are beginning to find themselves more of an audience outside of Australasia after playing arenas worldwide, and having supported the aforementioned Santana and other big hitters such as Damien Marley and Lauryn Hill. Blue King Brown’s Natalie Pa’apa’a speaks to BBM’s Frankie Salt ahead of their Womadelaide performance. Are you looking forward to playing at WomAdelaide in March? Oh absolutely. This festival has to be one of my ultimate favourites. It’s seriously great and right up my street. It has that sense of family and friends coming together to appreciate music. The line-up is especially good and you should definitely head there for the festival. So what have you guys been up to recently? Well we have mostly been spending time in the studio recording the album and so we haven’t had much time for much else. But that’s going really well and planning for the upcoming tours like WomAdelaide. Obviously there are 8 of you and your sound is a mixture of dancehall, roots, rock & afro groove, who’s the main decision maker on what sounds you go for? Ha-ha well I would say that the main decision maker is myself and the co-guitarist. Basically we all have our ideas for the music but there has to be a final say. It must get pretty crazy when writing songs with so many of you? Do you guys ever disagree on stuff? No, we never really disagree on any matters when it comes to the music. We all have our own opinion and work together to create our sound. With such a vast fusion of genres coming through in Blue King Brown’s sound, what were your musical inspirations growing up? Ah well we all had so many musical inspirations when we were growing up. I was very lucky as my mother had such great taste in music. Listening to Carlos Santana’s and Bob Marley’s very much helped with my musical tastes and inspired me to be musical myself. As a band we combine these inspirations with sounds of our own and hopefully create something that is successful. Do you listen to new music and also take inspiration from this? Yes definitely, we are always listening out for new bands and new talent and love listening to music from around the World which inspires us to make music. So you started off busking what was it that propelled you guys to this level of touring worldwide and performing at festivals? Well perhaps it is the passion and love for what you do that propels you. I mean when you have played on the street to people who are passing by, say, on their lunch break- it makes it so amazing to then be playing small gig- and then onto an international tour. It’s incredible but is definitely rooted through your love for what you do. You’ve played alongside some fantastic people, including Damian Marley and Lauren Hill, what was that like? Oh it’s amazing; it’s such an honour to play alongside artists who you look up to so highly in the music world. Lauren Hill is such a fine artist and so obviously it was such a pleasure and honour to play alongside her.

BBM’s Dani Nortje catches up with Bombay Bicycle Club’s Jamie MacColl ahead of their Australian tour in March. With their latest album ‘A Different Kind Of Fix’ unleashing a host of eclectic tunes, Bombay Bicycle Club are now undoubtedly on the list of favourites for those who appreciate their unique blend of indie rock and folk sound. We caught up with guitarist Jamie MacColl about his thoughts on their latest album, touring and being naked on stage. So Jamie, where are you now? We are in Tokyo Airport waiting to catch a flight back to London in the next hour. Were you in Tokyo with the rest of the band? Yes. We were on an Asian tour but we finished about a week ago. We were trying to stay out in places, so we were getting the train to Kyoto, Hiroshima and got all cultural. I suspect you collected inspiration for the next album? Hopefully, we have been making scrapbooks. Has Lucy Rose become a permanent member? Not really, I don’t want to call her a backing singer. She’s a collaborator, she sings lead vocals sometimes and she has so much of her own stuff on, but we are all one big happy family. You all seem to get on well. We were joking earlier that as soon as we get back we will probably get bored and probably be like do you want to do something? You must get bored getting back to London after all that bustle of being on tour. We didn’t really tour for the first two albums, touring around this one feels quite fresh. We are still going and seeing a lot of places at the same time and sort of beginning to miss the British winter. Your first real time touring, and your biggest headline at Alexandra Palace is coming up, do you still get nervous? I feel quite comfortable on stage; it’s all just muscle memory now when playing. The only thing that I get nervous about is talking in between the songs, which is something we haven’t yet mastered. Usually we just make awkward jokes. What kind of awkward jokes? Um, I can’t think of anything off the top of my head. Occasionally we play a game called ‘stage dares’ where we have to do something embarrassing on stage. One time I came on stage naked. It’s just silly things. Are you planning to do anything cool in Australia? I would like to go watch a Super 16 rugby match. Ed has family out there where we can stay. Just do some bumming around and try and get a suntan, but I only really burn. Will do anything wild like scuba diving or bungee jumping? Maybe snorkelling but that’s not very wild. So we will see. Your albums have always been about girls. Is this the case with ‘A Different Kind of Fix’? They are all about the same girl really. It’s meant to be about the ups and downs of a relationship, being young and growing up. Hopefully it’s written in a way that a lot of people can relate to and that it has that balance of being very personal and universal. Is all the experimentation with hip-hop, reggae and choirs in this album down to you still trying to find your own unique sound? Personally I think that although all the albums sound fairly different, I think they all sound like Bombay Bicycle Club, if that makes sense? I think if you can experiment and still keep your own identity then I think that’s the perfect situation. With your album Flaws you were worried about it being folk, and you were aiming to interject this one with more rock, but it still seems like folk to me. When I think of this album it sounds quite soft and atmospheric compared to the first one. It’s somewhere in between the first two albums, in that there are elements of acoustic folk music, some more rock songs, and songs like ‘Shuffle’ are filled with electronic beats. What is the influence behind all the mixed genres? It’s a reflection of our music tastes always changing. We get bored fairly easily and we get bored trying to make the same album over and over again. We are 21 and 22, people are always trying to figure out a lot of things in their life at this point. Ultimately I agree to an extent we haven’t found that ideal sound yet.

What is your favourite song you’ve written? Oh you could never choose a favourite. Whenever I am asked this question, I have a favourite song which I am playing at that moment but never a favourite overall. Everyone has a track which they have written which means something special to them.

Do you still have a lot of independence now you have signed up with Island Records? Well Island has been there for the last three albums and they didn’t sign up until after we had recorded the first album. So we had the most freedom with that album. But we have always self regulated ourselves. We never had an A&R man come in and radically change things; we are left to get on with ourselves. Ultimately you know what’s best for your band.

Ok, so what is your favourite track to perform at this moment in time? Yeah so there’s a track called ‘Women’s Revolution’ which is just fantastic to perform and the lyrics are great. To be honest I never listen to my own music and so it’s more of an “in the moment” thing.

That seems to stick well with your motto ‘whatever happens, happens naturally’ and if it at all feels forced you will stop. Is this still true? That will always be the case. It’s very important to us that doing the band makes us happy, obviously not all the time, if you are in a creative job it should be enjoyable and exciting and it shouldn’t feel like work.

Is there anyone in particular you’re looking forward to seeing? Yeah there’s so much going on at the festivalFrom Mad Professor to Staff Benda Billi and Baaba Mal, the array of music will be outstanding. This festival is definitely one to shout about.

Are you looking forward to touring with Elbow? Yeah, they are a really amazing live band we will definitely have to step it up and put on a really good show every night.

What inspired you to call the collective Blue King Brown? Does anyone have a particular affinity with snakes? Ha-ha no to be honest there wasn’t any connection to snakes with the name of our collective. To us it was just a perfect connection of three words that together did not have any direct meaning to anything already created… They’re such strong words and helped to create our flag for the collective which is blue, yellow and brown. What else is planned for Blue King Brown in 2012? Ok so we have WomAdelaide which of course is a great highlight for us and will be an absolute pleasure to perform at. We then further our tour across Australia. The blues festival in Byron Bay ‘Bluesfest’ in April which is just a huge festival covering blues music from across the globe. There are some incredible artists playing there. Then we are taking off to New Zealand and across America and into Europe. Wow, so you’ve got a lot going on, 2012 sounds like its going to be massive for Blue King Brown… Do you think you’ll be heading to the UK? Yeah hopefully we will get to gig around the UK, especially London, I don’t know the exact dates but London is always great to play. 2012 is going to be a great year for us.

If this tour goes well will you headline tours for fans in Auckland and Brisbane? I hope so. I don’t see why not. Where else would you like to go on tour? I am slowly ticking all the boxes. There are places I would like to go personally, but I don’t know if they would be very successful like Patagonia, Argentina, New Zealand, and Russia. I’m just going to list all the places I would like to go on holiday now. Who would your dream collaboration be as a band? I would really like to work with Bon Iver, with him just singing on something and he could make an interesting producer too, because he produces all his own records and they sound great. What do you think we could expect from Bombay Bicycle Club in the future? I have no idea to be honest. That’s what I find quite exciting. Hopefully we are not too predictable, I have no idea what the next album will sound like, we have written a few songs but they are all quite different. By Dani Nortje

FUNNY NEWS Voice of Palestine radio that when she was 11, her father confined her to the toilet and did not allow her to go to school or see her mother, whom he had divorced. According to a statement issued by Palestinian police, the father, citing a “family dispute,” admitted to locking up his daughter and feeding her mainly bread. On the plus side, at least he didn’t give her curries. Imagine that suffocated by your own bum gas. She was beaten with a baton and metal wires and given only one blanket to keep her warm, said social worker Hala Shreim. “The bathroom was only 1-1/2 meters big, it was like a cell,” Shreim said. “Her only consolation was a radio which kept her connected to the world ... She told me that she loves life and has to live.” It is unsure whether ‘severe constipation’ is a good enough legal reason to keep a kid trapped in a bathroom for ten years.

Latest Slash-and-Hack Computer Game

Video game giants Sega are set to give the phrase ‘cock-fighting’ a whole new angle with their latest project - a game machine that works by measuring how fast and loud you piss into a urinal. The ‘Toylet’ device is fitted into bar bathroom urinals, which are fitted with sensors and small digital displays at eye level. A novel idea? Or did Sega just get the wrong end of the stick when they heard Nintendo were working on a wee console? “This gives bar customers more things to talk about when they return from bathrooms to their tables,” said Hiroyuki Tanaka, Sega spokesman. “We have had good feedback from our customers that toilet cleanliness has improved.”

Bogged Down By Daddy Issues

Five games are available so far, including “Hold, Manneken Pis!”, named after a famous Brussels fountain depicting a small boy in the act. Players compete on the volume of their piss on that one, but in “Splashing Battle!” the user takes on the previous visitor in a virtual fight based on stream strength.

When BBM needs to drop the kids off at the pool, give us a Game of Thrones book and we can be in there for a good hour. But we have to tip our hat to a 21-year-old Palestinian woman who claims she’s been on the bog for a piles-busting 10 years.

Amazingly, the game titled “Violent wind warning has been issued” has nothing to do with other lavatory explosions - instead the player tries to blow up a virtual girl’s skirt with a digital wind, the strength of which depends on the power of your urine flow.

Baraa Melhem says she was locked in a bathroom for the past decade by her father, who only let her out in the dead of night so she could clean the house.

Sega has installed about 130 Toylets at around 100 bars and restaurants across Japan for 150,000 yen each. We don’t know about you but it sounds like a dodgy idea to BBM. We can barely go when there’s some bloke stood next to us, throw in a digital death fight and it’ll be straight to the cubicle every time - even if we only want a number one.

Melhem said her father would tell her that “People are monsters” as the reason she wasn’t let out of the shithouse. “And don’t forget to scrub around the rim this time,” he would presumably add. Palestinian police said they freed Melhem from the small bathroom of a home in the West Bank city of Qalqilya after an anonymous tip. Melhem told

It’s The General Idea

Dressing up as something you’re not, in order to scam a bit of extra cash is hardly a new idea. We’ve all heard of conmen who dress up as electricity meter readers to fool unsuspecting pensioners into letting them in their house. And even BBM has fallen foul of a deceptive appearance, notably in Bangkok when we got the ‘lady’ in question back to our hotel. However a 52-year-old hospital owner in Pakistan has taken con-artistry to new heights after pretending to be a brash army general for three years in order to earn favour from the country’s powerbrokers.
Bluff-master Maqsood Shah was eventually caught near an army area in eastern Karachi as he strolled in, in uniform to meet a government official in order to clinch approval for an illegal land transfer. But temporarily forgetting that, in reality, he has zero influence or power in Pakistan, Shah got a bit too into his role and threatened the official - who subsequently tipped off police. “We have arrested a man who runs a private hospital but has been successfully pretending to be a lieutenant general for three years to grab land and garner undue favours,” a senior police official Ghulam Subhani said. “We checked him out to confirm that he was a fake and arrested him outside the cantonment ... He is the brother of a retired army colonel who is abroad. We found fake military gear, an AK-47 rifle and a Blackberry from his house.” Police accused Shah of ringing up several provincial cabinet ministers and pretending to be a general in order to solicit “undue favours”. He even attended the funeral of influential local politician Pir Pagara, paying his respects in uniform without being detected.

FUNNY NEWS GOSSIP

Driven To Debt

Britain’s worst ever learner driver has been uncovered in Leicester after failing his test a staggering 92 times... without even getting into a car. The 28-year-old, who has not been named but who we assume is a woman, keeps flunking the hour-long piece of piss theory test, which includes basic multiple-choice questions about road rules, plus a hazard-perception test. And seeing as it costs £31 to take the test, the price of ineptitude has been totalled up to £2,852. Another bloke, also from Leicester, failed his practical test 22 times before passing - that’s £1,650 for the privilege of being told you’re adequate at reversing around corners. So the moral of the story is, be extra careful for shit drivers if you ever go to the East Midlands. Not that you’d ever willingly go there anyway.

Swearing By America

Uncouth taxi drivers, Italian-Americans asking your girlfriend ‘how you doin?’, police officers who stab first ask questions later, lollipop ladies who yell ‘fuckin jerk-off’ to anyone crossing the road. We haven’t actually been to New York but we’ve heard from good authority that that’s what it’s like, a preconception backed by a new poll which named the Big Apple as America’s rudest city. Following up were Miami in second place, Washington DC, and three-time champ and road-rage riots capital Los Angeles. “People in New York are constantly in a rush,” Thomas P. Farley, author of What Manners Most blog, said. “Certainly, they don’t linger on corners smiling, waving, and waiting to help people. But once you’ve stopped a New Yorker and asked them for directions, they’re usually more than helpful.” We’re assuming he means they’re helpful after they’ve mugged you.

Crack In Skulls

American prat Dante Autullo is as hard as nails. Literally. The nutjob accidentally fired a nail gun into his head last month but, because there was only a small scrath on the surface of his scalp, he wrongly assumed it had just been a glancing blow. As a result, he walked around with a nine-centimeter nail stuck inside his skull for two days before deciding to go to hospital. The father of four finally went for treatment after complaining of nausea and headaches following a nap. Doctors hailed him as something of a medical miracle as he was ‘walking and talking’ - and later revealed the nail had lodged itself just millimeters from the section that controls motor functions.
Dante’s fiancée (what a lovely turn of phrase!) Gail Glaenzer said she thought it was ‘a miracle’ he had survived, after undergoing successful surgery in Oak Lawn, Illinois, to remove the nail and install a titanium plate in his skull. “Un-freaking-believable,” she exclaimed in the uncouth manner of a true American.

BBM was most shocked to learn that Seal and Heidi Klum are parting ways after 7 years of being together, and they certainly weren’t in our predictions for 2012 divorces. The couple who have 3 biological children together, and one elder child from Klum’s previous relationship have confirmed the split and said that they have ‘grown apart.’ It’s also been said that Seal just kept going out on the lash and getting hammered. So that would explain why he’s done that rubbish covers album of late for a bit of quick cash. One of the most steady couples in celebland, we’re actually quite sad about this one. Wonder who will be next? David Furnish and Elton John. Blates! Looks like Nicole Shnerzerlingeringerlamadingdong’s (or whatever her name is) time in the sun could be up shortly. It’s been rumoured that diva extraordinaire, Mariah Carey has realised she’s incapable of making teenage-girl and gay pleasing albums anymore and is going to be turning her hand to the wonderful world of reality television. Yes that’s right, Mariah Carey is rumoured to be first in line to be replacing the ex-Pussy Cat Doll. However we’re not sure the US producer’s have thought about the costs of such a move, as Mariah Carey once refused to appear on television unless she was bathed in golden light. Let’s hope for their sake, she’s changed her ways. Although we highly doubt it. In crimes against fashion it’s been announced that Girls Aloud singer, Nicola Roberts and Rihanna will be teaming up to do a fashion television show which embarks upon finding Britain’s best unknown fashion designer. The process will run for a 10 week stint in which the designers will have to come up with creations for the “hottest” names in showbiz (most likely people like Cheryl Cole and Fern Cotton) and the main prize is getting to make Rihanna’s outfit for her Wireless performance in London’s Hyde Park in the summer. Sounds shit.

SPORT Didi Really Do That?

Footballer’s aren’t usually the most imaginative sorts when it comes to penning their own literature. A quick look at the titles of some of the more popular Premier League autobiographies proves our point - “Keane” by Roy Keane, “Carra” by Jamie Carragher, “Gazza” by... you get the point. But our interest was piqued last month by the latest literary effort by Dietmar Hamann. For starters, it’s called “The Didi Man” - which presumably isn’t a reference to his performance in the post-match showers. And secondly, it turns out the veteran workhorse is a bit of a loon with some very strange recollections of his professional career. For instance, he seems to think Sven-Goran Eriksson is James Bond. “One morning when I was on a sun lounger by the pool, he [Sven] walked towards me with a bottle of champagne and two glasses on it. It was still only 10 in the morning. I looked up and said, ‘Boss, what are we celebrating?’ expecting him to make the triumphant announcement he was staying. “He turned to me and smiled that gentle smile of his and took the air of a Buddhist philosopher, as he said, ‘Life, Kaiser. We are celebrating life’. With a glass of champagne in hand he stood and looked out towards the horizon, then spoke in that higgledy-piggledy Swedish accent: ‘You know Kaiser, I like this place. I think I will manage for another five years and come back here and live with two women. Yes. I think I need two beautiful women’.” It is unclear if the pair then made love while ‘Diamonds are Forever’ played in the background. Hamann also had a teensy-weensy bit of a gambling problem... and by teensy-weensy bit, we mean bloody massive. “That night I bought Australia for £2,800 at 340 runs. That meant for every run over 340 you win £2,800, but for every run under you lose the same amount. Australia collapsed for 237. It is a score I remember well. It cost me £288,400.” Which is why Germans shouldn’t bet on a sport they have absolutely no knowledge of.

Barton’s Gets His Tweet Revenge

He may be about as good for a team’s moral as the news that footballing bicycle Imogen Thomas has picked up syphilis, but QPR still stuck with Joey Barton instead of manager Neil Warnock last month.

Final Ride Of The Wenger Bus?

Arsene Wenger’s secret attempt to see how long he can stay in charge of Arsenal without actually winning anything took a blow last month. Through a combination of blind confidence in youth and a stubborn determination not to spend any money, Wenger has already made sure the Gunners will win absolutely bugger all this season. But suspicious Arsenal fans – and even skipper Robin van Persie - are beginning to cotton on to Wenger’s record attempt, which became even more obvious when the Gunners took on Man United last month. Trailing 1-0, Arsenal wunderkind Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was playing out of his skin and set up van Persie for Arsenal’s equaliser in the second half. Naturally concerned that Arsenal might push on to win the game, Wenger immediately substituted Oxlade-Chamberlain for Andrei Arseshavings. Hilariously, the match cameras caught van Persie looking horrified at the decision and clearly shouts the words ‘oh no!’ It also prompted cries of ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ from the Gunners fans. But it proved to be a masterstroke - as far as Wenger’s trophyless run is concerned - as nine minutes later, the hapless Arseshavings was sold a dummy by Antonio Valencia, who then sent up the winner for United. And with that, any lingering hopes Arsenal fans had of winning the title disappeared.

Warnock blamed his sacking on everything from Twitter, to player agents, to mysterious outside influences at the club. In every example, he meant Barton. “Tony [Fernandes, chairman], who’s the one really who sacked me, I know the influence that he’ll have had from certain people in the last few weeks will have been difficult to resist,” Warnock said. “People get on the phone and tweet every five or 10 minutes, and it’s almost like slowly poisoning somebody, from outside the club and no doubt from within the club as well. It’s a dangerous precedent if you let players talk to chairmen, but you can’t stop Twitter and things like that. “When you have a run of results like we had and you’re not involved in football and you get people in your ear – agents, for example – tweeting him and speaking to him and talking about players … there’s some clever and manipulative people. I’ve no bitterness towards it. It’s just how things go.” In other words, Warnock was shafted by cash-hungry moneymen only interested in themselves. That run of eight games without a win probably didn’t help things though either - as Barton later pointed out. On Twitter. “Lost his job and the guy is blaming everyone but himself! Embarrassing, time to look in the mirror mate. Last thing we need right. Big week,” Barton posted while plotting the downfall of Mark Hughes.

“We lost the game just now and I do not have to explain to you what I do,” blathered Wenger. “I have to stand up to the result and the subs. I’ve been 30 years a manager and made 50,000 subs and I have to justify every decision I make to you? I stand up for it.” The Frenchman was then pushed on whether his decision cost Arsenal the game — as most Gunners fans felt. “Why? If you expect me to blame an individual player, it will not happen,” he said before winking and mouthing the word ‘Arseshavings’.

Piggy In The Middle

We hate bullying and name-calling here at BBM, which is why we were shocked and appalled when we found out that piggy-faced fat bastard snooker star, Shaun Murphy, has been subjected to a barrage of cruel ‘fat boy’ jibes on Twitter. The 29-year-old future heart disease patient is taking part in a grueling half marathon immediately after the World Championship in May to raise money for the Paul Hunter Charity Foundation. We’re sure he could probably raise the same money if he just gave up Mars bars for a month. “I get some compliments,” Murphy lied. “But I also get a lot of abuse on there as well, not nice stuff. “It’s not right just to abuse people from sitting on a bus or behind a desk, the law of the land must prevent that. “I don’t deserve to be abused on Twitter for being overweight. But that is the world we live in. People are judging everything we say and do.” Twitter has sparked a wave of controversy in the usually boring-as-paintdrying game with stars Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Williams both facing disciplinary charges for use of foul language on the site. World No.6 Murphy added: “In a world where your comments can be accessed by kids, who might see you as some kind of role model, there has to be common sense. “It’s not the topic discussed, everyone should be entitled to their opinion, but there can be no excuse for bad language where kids are concerned.” The fat porker lost in the final of the BGC Masters last month to Aussie champion Neil Robertson. So not only is Murphy a giant tub of lard, he’s also let down the entire country. You make us sick Shaun.

Can’t Take Any Mour

The ego-filled powder keg called Real Madrid, gets ever closer to kabooming with news that all is not well on the good ship Galactico. Despite setting the pace in La Liga for once, and cruising through to the knockout stages of the Champions League, it seems there’s mutiny ahoy for Captain Jose Mourinho and his crew of cashed-up swashbucklers.
Rumours are rife of a bust-up between players and manager following the club’s defeat to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey last month. Let’s face it, it was only a matter of time. Mourinho was reportedly unhappy that his players refused to defend the team’s negative tactics against Barcelona, telling defender Sergio Ramos: “All the Spanish players have been world champions and your friends in the Press protect you. Like the keeper.” Goalkeeper Iker Casillas - 30 yards away - shouted: “Hey, boss, here we say things face to face, OK?” When Ramos explained a change in tactics for the corner which led to Barca’s first goal, Mourinho, who did not play professionally, rapped: “Are you trying to be the manager now?” Ramos replied: “No, but at times we have to change the markings. As you have never worn shorts, you don’t know these situations arise.” The mental image of Jose Mourinho wearing tight shorts and ‘popping out’ Alan Partridge-style is disturbing enough, but things got worse for the manager when he was booed by the team’s fans at the next game. Not that he gave a shit. “If they jeered me at a club where they don’t normally jeer anybody, then I might be worried. But here, where they jeer the biggest names in football, it’s not a problem,” he shrugged.

No Longer The Darlings Of The North-East

Remember when Darlington thought they’d signed Tino Asprilla? How we laughed when the chairman announced the deal only for Asprilla not to bother turning up. It was almost as funny as when Kevin Keegan was Newcastle boss and proudly declared he could sign any player in the world – then duly bought Tino Asprilla. What about the time the Quakers built a 25,000 capacity stadium – despite the fact they’ve never even managed to fill even half of the capacity. Hilarious. Well spare a thought for Darlington fans this month as the 128-year-old club are still dicing with death after coming within seconds of folding last month. Former cake-taker boss Craig Liddle and his remaining 10 players were summoned to the Northern Echo Arena at midday in mid-January to be told by the club’s administrator, Harvey Madden, that he had failed to agree a rescue plan and the club would fold. But a few minutes later, a group of fans and local businessman calling themselves the Darlington FC Rescue Group (DFCRG) arrived with £50,000 and pleaded with the administrator for more time. And after an overseas supporter pledged another £150,000, Madden agreed a short-term deal that will allow the matches for the rest of January to go ahead. Steve Weeks, a member of the Rescue Group, said: ‘’Fans have to realise this is just the beginning and we now need their support more than ever. If this town really wants a football club, now is the time to show how much they care.” Considering how indifferent the Darlington public have been to the campaign so far, we expect the club to have gone under by the time you read this.

SPORT Six Nations 2012 How Will the 'New' England Fare? When the Six Nations kicks off on 4th Feb with France v Italy, it begins a tournament featuring teams not just looking to win for winning’s sake, but to prove points. Wales will want to show that their resurgence at this summer’s World Cup was not a false dawn, Ireland will be looking to prove that they can succeed without the injured Brian O’Driscoll, and France will want to continue the form they showed in reaching the World Cup final; but, perhaps more than the others, England will be aiming to demonstrate that they’ve moved on and cleaned themselves up after half a year of controversy. Interim coach Stuart Lancaster has been keen to really stamp his authority on the squad, and has, arguably, been doing the things that Martin Johnson should have done himself. The old guard has been thrown out – with the likes of Mike Tindall, Mark Cueto, and Nick Easter not selected – and youngsters such as Owen Farrell, Brad Barritt, and Jordan Turner-Hall brought in to provide a refreshing line-up that Lancaster has said will be the team of the future. More importantly, perhaps, is the hard-line taken against the players’ (*ahem*) extra-curricular activities. We all remember how shameful (and funny) the antics of the England team were in New Zealand, and Lancaster has shown that he’s not prepared to tolerate the same behaviour after being tested by Danny Care’s conviction for drink driving, and reacting by dropping him from the squad before he had the chance to get near any midgets. Discipline aside, and as Lancaster said, this England team will be the team of the future – but is it the team for the present? Perhaps this team will click immediately and sweep all before them – like some sort of… um, giant sweepy thing – but a team stripped of so much experience so rapidly stands a good chance of faltering and they probably won’t. With the opening game against Scotland at Murrayfield on 4th Feb, England has the chance to make a statement against a team looking to justify SRU Chief Executive Mark Dodson’s bold claim that Scotland is looking to win the 2015 World Cup. (Don’t laugh. It’s rude.) But c’mon, England won’t win the tournament, let’s just accept that. Be kind, and say right now it’s more important for England to show promise and sobriety. If you forced us to put our money on it, we’d say that Wales v France on 17th March will be the title decider, with Wales coming out on top. But does anyone want to rule out Ireland? Even without O’Driscoll – out injured with a trapped nerve in his shoulder – Ireland still remains a force; but we’re pretending you’ve forced us to make a decision, so Wales it is. We’ll have to wait to find out whether we know what we’re talking about or whether we’ve just been waffling on in the desperate hope that you won’t notice we lost interest when we decided England weren’t going to win. Just to make sure you keep in the loop with what’s happening and when…here are the fixtures. By Peter Simpson

CRYSTAL BALLS Aquarius

Aquarius - the water carrier. Or, in other words, the least interesting sign of the zodiac. With the possible exception of Libra. What is a water carrier anyway and how come they get their own frigging constellation? Isn’t it about time we had celebrities replacing outdated zodiac signs to make horoscopes more accessible for “the kids”. As of 2013, Aquarius will be renamed the Iceland-sponsored Kerry Katona constellation.

Taurus

Ignore the sniggers and snide remarks of your friends. Trust in the voice inside your head that keeps saying you have a beautiful singing voice that needs to be heard by a wider audience. Alas, the judges on Australian Idol think otherwise and, not only are you laughed off stage during your audition, you’re also booted up the arse on the way out by celebrity judge Simon Cowell. You may feel suicidal now but, on the plus side, your tone-deaf screeching - combined with a dance that looks like your turning two screwdrivers while trying to extract yourself from mud - has brought joy to millions.

Our resident psychic, Crystal, tells you your fortune for the month...

Leo

This week you suddenly remember that ginger bird, Sarah you shagged behind those bins on Oxford Street when you’re diagnosed with syphilis. Tough tits Leo, shouldn’t be such a slag.

Aries

A lorry carrying a tonne of imported chocolate from Nestle will crash into the lounge while you’re watching television, killing you instantly. The Milky Bars are on you! Our thoughts are with your family at this tragic time.

Gemini

Well done Gemini, it’s a brave, brave decision you made. You’ve been in denial for so long, I never really thought you’d come out the closet but that night in The Tool Shed with Libra really opened your eyes to the lifestyle you’ve always craved. Just in time for Mardi Gras too.

Cancer

This month, you and your jet-fighter pilot partner Nick “Goose” Bradshaw are given the chance to train at the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School. You progress through the training, enjoy a romance with a Kellie McGillis, and then overcome a crisis of confidence following a training accident in which Goose is killed – all with Kenny Loggins classic ‘Danger Zone’ playing in the background.

After your night of homosexual romping with Gemini, you became a self-hating psychopath. From March onwards, your life becomes a spiral of self-loathing; travelling from one gay club to the next for meaningless bum sex and then going home to yell at your long dead father’s ghost.

Scorpio

The sultry Asia Argento stars as a woman who throws herself into a romantic request to search for her exlover and gets caught up in the fascinating Romanian gypsy culture. Phwoar!

Virgo

Your mother warned you about the dangers of coming to Australia; she told you of the many lethal creatures that could attack and kill you. Sharks, redbacks, brown snakes, stone fish, funnel webs... the list goes on and on. This month, a rabid possum bites your leg off. You take out its eye. For the rest of your lives, the two of you hunt each other for a final fight to the death to resolve the fierce quarrel.

Sagittarius

Your latent psychic powers finally manifest themselves granting you the ability to manipulate the mind of anyone within a 10-meter radius. Rather than using your powers to help people, you use them to make hotties take their clothes off. Worst. Super hero. Ever.

Capricorn

“It’s only a game so, put up a real big fight,” crooned comedy racist Jim Davidson, somewhat paradoxically, on the theme tune to snooker-based quiz show Big Break. Funnily enough, the next line “I’m gonna be snookering you tonight” are the last words you remember hearing after going to the toilet in The Tool Shed. You wake up the following morning bollock-naked on a strange bed, with something suspiciously sticky in your hair and a snooker cue rammed up your anus.

Libra

For every gay person embracing their lifestyle choice, there’s always another one crying in the bottom of the shower imagining his army colonel father yelling at him to be a ‘real man’. Sadly, you are that man Libra.

Pisces

Simon Cowell is reforming early 90s popsters Steps – and he wants you to be the new Lisa Scott Lee. A month of touring shit pubs around Sydney to nonplussed locals ensues. It’s a tragedy.

ASK CRYSTAL Dear Crystal, I think I might be gay as I’ve started to fall in love with my best friend. The problem is, I’m married. My marriage is a very happy one, but for the last couple of years I’ve found myself more and more attracted to my friend. He’s a pretty open-minded guy, it’s one of the things I like about him, but I just don’t know how he’d react if I told him how I felt. I’d be devastated if this destroyed our friendship and my marriage. Then again, I don’t know how long I can go on like this without telling him something. What should I do Crystal? Pretend I’m not gay for the rest of my life and bottle up my emotions, or sit down with him one night and admit my feelings? I’m so torn. Yours, Quentin Dear Quentin, Well your name was a bit of a giveaway to be honest (your parents never gave you a chance). But I think you already know the answer to your problem. You have to squash down those emotions, bury them as deep as you can until you lose all sense of who you are. Only then can you forget your sexuality. There’s also a couple of things you can do to stop becoming gay. 1) Next time you get cut up in traffic say “I bet that guy’s gay.” 2) Picture your wife cheating on you with a gay guy. Still think you’re gay? Go to the bathroom, look at the guy in the mirror and whisper “you’re gay”. If he nods, repeat steps one and two then try again. Dear Crystal, I’ve got a real bad case of piles and nothing seems able to shift them. You look like a woman who’s dealt with her fair share of bum grapes in her time – any advice? Yours, Arthur Dear Arthur, Bloody hell chap, a little too much information there. You’re correct of course, a sexually-charged bed demon like me has naturally had her fair share of Nobbies over the years. My advice is to sit on a rolling pin and wiggle. It doesn’t work that often but it certainly feels good.

JOKES: - Got home tonight and my wife was in the bedroom having a barney with my daughter. - And if you’ve never seen incestual lesbian dinosaur sex it’s well worth a wank Jay, Fremantle - The lady walking ahead of me sped up so I did too, she began running so I ran too, she screamed so I screamed as well. I never even saw what we were running from. Phil, Darlinghurst - Virgin Broadband - The two main ingredients needed for a World Of Warcraft profile. - My anger management is pissing me off.

Gareth, Surry Hills

Andy, St Kilda

- You know, some women would be over the moon to be woken up on their birthday with flowers, a lovely cooked breakfast in bed and twenty minutes of amazing oral sex. - But oh no, not MY mum. Tim, Adelaide - I love watching the Venga boys. I’m not gay, I’m an Arsenal fan.

Todd, Richmond

- I saw a man at the beach yelling “Help, shark! Help!” - I just laughed, I knew that shark wasn’t going to help him.

Mark, Paddington

- I was walking through the park with my girlfriend this morning when I decided to change hands. - Bin bags can be awkward to carry sometimes. Steve, Manly - My wife just called me. - She said, “The two kids want you to take them Bowling on Saturday, then afterwards they want you to take them to the cinema.” - “It’s either one or the other” I said, “Otherwise it’s too expensive.” - “Okay” she replied, “Which one do you prefer?” - I said, “David.” Aaron, Bondi - If at first you don’t succeed... - Don’t get all fucking stroppy when I politely try to tell you how my ex used to do it. - Life is like a dick, when it gets hard just fuck it.

Gil, Kings Cross

Amy, Wollongong

- I was trying to think of a way to make money today when my mate suggested that I should write down a long, made up manuscript, and try and get it published. - I thought; ‘That’s a novel idea.’ Jane, Kwinana

TAX & VISAS Maximizing your Australian Tax Return! So you are travelling in the wild, beautiful and amazing Australia - good choice. I remember my backpacking days with great fondness (and a bit of embarrassment). Here is some advice that can save you a lot of money. Have you been told that you as a backpacker will automatically get all your tax back when leaving Australia? Well, this is, unfortunately not true! The good news is, that if you plan your trip well, you might be eligible to a decent tax refund. To understand your tax situation, you must figure out whether you are an Australian resident for tax purposes. Australian residents are generally taxed on their worldwide income and non-residents are generally taxed only on their Australian-sourced income. A higher rate of tax is applied to a foreign resident’s taxable income and they are not entitled to a tax-free threshold. Let me show you an example: Anna is an Australian resident and Erin is not, they both earn $19,500 and have paid 25% in tax equalling to $4,875. When they do their tax returns Anna’s estimated tax refund is $4,783.90 while Erin will have to pay the tax office $780 since the non resident tax rate starts at 29%. So the key is to be classed as an Australian resident for tax purposes. How do you get that classification? There are four tests and the “183” day test is the main test that will apply to people on a working holiday visa:

1. Residency - the resides test 2. Residency - the domicile test 3. Residency - the 183 day test 4. Residency - the superannuation test To pass the 183 day test you have to stay in Australia continuously for six months or more, and for most of the time you must be:

• in the same job, and • living in the same place

WORK VISAs for australia Many younger Brits and Europeans are using the current European debit crisis as an opportune time, when they may not be able to get their ideal job at home, to do their big overseas working holiday or “gap year”. The Australian Working Holiday Visa program provides an opportunity for people between 18 and 30 from reciprocating countries to holiday in Australia while undertaking short term and casual employment to supplement their travel. In order to qualify for an Australian Working Holiday visa, applicants must be between 18-30 years of age and hold a passport from a country that has a reciprocal working holiday program arrangement with Australia. Applicants are also required to satisfy certain health and character requirements in order to meet the visa criteria. An Australian Working Holiday visa is valid for 12 months from the date of first entry and holders are permitted to travel freely to and from Australia during this period. Working Holliday visa holders are permitted to work for up to 6 months with each employer and undertake up to 4 months of study or training. It may also be possible to apply for another 12 months Working Holiday visa if at least 3 months of seasonal work has been undertaken in regional Australia. See The Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship at http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-holiday/

Other work visa options include: • Australian Work and Holiday Visa

An Australian Work and Holiday visa is valid for 12 months from the date of first entry and holders are permitted to leave and re-enter Australia any number of times during this period. Work and Holiday visa holders are entitled to work for up to 6 months with each employer and undertake up to 4 months of study or training. The reciprocating countries in this programme differ from those under the Australian Working Holiday Visa program.

• Australian Skilled Independent Visa

Applicants are required to obtain a minimum of 65 points on a point assessment. The assessment is such that applicants are required to be under 50 years of age and be able demonstrate that they have a qualification and/or skills in an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL). Applicants for the Skilled Independent visa do not require sponsorship. See the latest SOL list at http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/pdf/solfact-sheet.pdf The Australian Skilled or Work visa program is specifically tailored to encourage individuals with specific skills and capabilities to migrate to Australia to improve Australia’s economy and work force. Australian Work visa applicants who are able to obtain sponsorship through an employer or be nominated through one of the participating State Migration Plans are given priority processing. See http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/state-plans.htm

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) takes the view that your accommodation and living arrangements need to be established as opposed to the overnight, weekly or monthly accommodation of a traveller.

• Australian 457 Visa

By showing the ATO that you organise your domestic and economic affairs as part of your life, reflecting a degree of continuity, routine or habit that is consistent with residing in Australia, you will be classified as an Australian Resident for tax purposes.

The Australian 457 visa (Temporary Business Long Stay) is a temporary work visa that allows employers to sponsor overseas workers to fill nominated skilled positions. The 457 visa is currently the most common pathway of business sponsorship for overseas workers.

Please note that being a resident for tax purposes is not the same as being a resident for immigration purposes.

457 visa applicants must have an employer willing to sponsor them as part of the visa application process. Employers must meet specific sponsorship and nomination steps before the prospective employee can apply for a 457 visa. A 457 visa is valid for up to four (4) years and work experience gained in Australia on this visa may lead to permanent residence either through sponsorship by an eligible employer or the skilled migration program.

It is important to note that the 183 day test applies in relation to the tax year, not the calendar year. In Australia the tax year runs from 1 July to 30 June of the following year. If you are an overseas student enrolled in a course of study for more than six months duration you will automatically be classified as an Australian resident for tax. To make your tax situation as good as possible, regardless if you are an Australian resident or not, make sure that you keep all receipts for any expenses incurred in regards to your work and a tax accountant can help you to claim what you are eligible for. In summary, if you want to pay less tax in Australia you need to stay in the one place for six months in the Australian tax year, and after that, travel around this awesome country with some extra money in your pocket!

Entitles approved skilled workers to work temporarily in Australia if they are sponsored by an employer.

In order to qualify for a 457 visa, applicants must have an employer who is willing to sponsor them. There are three steps in the visa application process: 1. Sponsorship

Employers must seek and obtain approval to sponsor and recruit overseas workers. A business will be approved for a specified number of overseas workers over a two year period.

2. Nomination

Employers must nominate each of the positions they wish to fill with an overseas worker. The nomination must relate to an occupation that meets a minimum skills threshold covering managerial, professional, associate professional and trade occupations. The nominated position must also be paid a minimum salary level as specified in a Gazette Notice.

3. Visa Application

The overseas workers identified to fill the vacancy must apply for a 457 visa to enter and remain in Australia. The applicant must demonstrate they have skills to match the nominated position and must be offered employment at not less than the salary indicated in the nomination application. The applicant is also required to satisfy certain health and character requirements to meet the 457 visa criteria. According to the statistics from the Australian Department of Immigration, Australia attracts a large number of immigrants from Ireland. Australia welcomed about 1,280 Irish citizens who came to Australia under temporary working visas. In 2011, the number of Irish entering Australia increased to 2,250 before reaching 3,100 during the last two quarters of 2011. With an abundance of natural resources like coal and iron ore, Australia has got over the global financial crisis and expanded its market to developing economies like China. Workers to Australia are welcome, especially in areas where recruitment can be difficult.

TRAVEL - PERTH Rottnest Island Western Australia’s a great place to visit if you fancy a bit of down time away from the hustle and bustle of city life. With a bevvy of natural reserves to visit it’s your perfect opportunity to see some real Australian wildlife and nature. If you’re stopping over in Fremantle, you’ve got the option of getting involved in Perth’s city life just 40 minutes away, however you’d be a fool not to go and visit Rottnest Island. In just 30 minutes by ferry from Fremantle you are transported to the beautiful Rottnest Island. A return ticket will set you back around $40-$50, but it is advisable to book as the ferries do get full up. And make sure you grab a sick bag if it’s a choppy day as the waves really can rock the boat. As you depart from Perth or Fremantle you’ll take in the entire vista of the city as you leave it all behind and go boho for the day. Rottnest Island got its rather peculiar name from the Dutch bloke (Volkersen) who visited the island in 1658 and observed the quokkas. Quokkas are football shaped marsupial, which kind of look a bit like a kangaroo, but are about the size of a domestic cat. However, Volkersen thought they looked like giant rats, so he dubbed the island Rotte Nest meaning ‘rats nest’, so you can see how they came to the latter name of Rottnest Island. Quokkas are a prime reason to visit Rottnest Island, but you’ll need to keep your eyes open to spot them, lurking under shrubbery. However once you’ve spotted one of these little quokkas, you’ll see tonnes, and if you pop into the cafes you’ll see a fair few of the little buggers trying to scrounge food from unsuspecting tourists, but don’t feed them people food, it’s bad for them! There are also two species of snake on the island including the non-venomous Southern Blind Snake and the Dugite, but don’t try and pick them up, the Dugite is poisonous and will bite you and eat you and devour your carcas. You have been warned. You’ll probably spot a lizard or two seeing as Bobtail, King’s Skinks, Marbled Geckos, West Coast Ctenotus’ and Burton’s Legless Lizards all live on Rottnest. An island surrounded by beautiful beaches, Rottnest is the perfect location for a swim in the clear blue waters, or a picnic on one of its many beaches. And seeing as the beaches are mostly enclosed little bays, it does make for pretty perfect snorkelling, swimming and even a touch of sea kayaking – for the more adventurous island visitors. With very few cars on the island, you’ll probably want to hire a bike, as this is the main method of transportation on the island, but be warned, it’s pretty hilly. So if it’s a particularly hot day, you may want to get a bus ticket. With frequent buses doing pick-ups and drop-offs at each bay, taking the bus is the easiest option to check out all the beaches Rottnest has to offer, and costs about $20. When setting off for the day, make sure you stock up on plenty of water and snacks before you get going as there are only two spots on the island where you can get refreshments, and in the blazing heat you don’t want to get caught short. There are also some great restaurants and cafes so it’s advisable to stop in for a bite before you go off sunning yourself and exploring this little paradise. If you’re anything like the BBM crew and you’re really just a big kid, then go and check out the aqua park near the ferry port. A marvel of inflatable toys such as zorbes, trampolines, slides and other fun inflatable things you can jump onto and catapult yourself into the ocean from. It definitely has our seal of approval, and kind of feels like you’re in an adult-sized Mariokart land. There’s no need to spend just one day in this little pleasure bubble though, with plenty of pre-booking in high season you can certainly find accommodation, so if the thought of going back to mainland after you’ve automatically adjusted to island life is too much, then why not go for a couple of days or make a long weekend out of it. There are a couple of hotels, however the most popular form of accommodation on the island is self-catering, so there is something for every kind of budget. There’s even a 9 hole golf course on the island, so if you fancy yourself a bit of a Nick Faldo (not Tiger Woods, Lord knows we’ve given that man too much publicity in the last year or so) then get stuck in. Rottnest really is the perfect location to get away from it all, so if you require more information then check out www. rottnestisland.com By Fanny Frangipane

Monkey Mia If you fancy delving even further into nature then why not take a trip up to Monkey Mia. The best way to get up to Monkey Mia from Perth is to book on a tour, or take a flight up as it’s 800 km north of Perth, so it’s a bit of a drive. Monkey Mia gets its name from the Aboriginal term for home of shelter ‘Mia’, whilst the Monkey part of the name is allegedly derived from a pearling boat called Monkey that anchored at the now Monkey Mia in the late 19th century, during the days when pearling was an industry in the region. Monkey Mia is world-famous for its bottlenose dolphins and the research done here at the dolphin research center is responsible for most of what is known about the behavior of these amiable animals today. The area became famous for its dolphins in 1890 when a fisherman and his wife began feeding the dolphins at close proximity, when he would return with his catch in the evening. When news spread of the dolphins coming into the shallows visitors began flocking to Monkey Mia in order to witness the extraordinary behavior of these amazing creatures. Even the most cynical of travellers will not be put off by this popular tourist haven. Strangely, only the female dolphins come into the shallows, but they are trusting enough to bring their babies and their visits are now a daily ritual. The dolphins, which are completely wild and come in off their own accord, take food from the hands of tourists in kneedeep water, however they are watched over by rangers, who protect the animals from over exposure to humans which can lead to a loss of natural feeding skills and interruption to breeding patterns amongst other issues. Monkey Mia is located in one of the most pristine marine environments in the World; so don’t leave the tiny settlement without taking a look at the place from the water. Local vessels offer wildlife spotting cruises in impressive catamarans, where you can see dolphins, rays, turtles, sharks and dugongs. The calm waters of the bay also mean no seasickness when your out on the water. For more information on Monkey Mia, log on to www.bbmlive.com By Fanny Frangipane

CHECK THIS OUT - PERTH 1

2

Perth, the capital of Western Australia, epitomizes the modern urban scene. It’s definitely isolated. But with its contemporary architecture, vibrant art scene, and countless restaurants capped off with funky bars and swish nightclubs, you won’t feel like you’ve staggered onto the scene of an old Western flick. And the locals here are a very nice complement with their friendliness, youthfulness and diversity. Perth’s CBD is all glass towers and wind tunnels, like any city. But graciously absent is the coldblooded corporate culture that so permeates Sydney and Melbourne. While you’re in Perth, check out the Perth Mint, on the corner of Hay and Hill Streets. It boasts the world’s largest collection of gold nuggets. Take a walk along the Swan River on Riverside Drive, head up to the Hay and Murray Street Malls, amble over to Northbridge for lunch and walk back down to Barrack St Jetty in time for one of the afternoon ferries from Barrack St Jetty to South Perth.

3

On the south side of the Swan River you’ll find Perth Zoo. The Perth Zoo has over 1500 animals comprising 200 different species. Local animal celebrities to be found here include kangaroos, koalas, numbats, emus, and dingoes.

4

Despite existing on the fringe of an already isolated continent, Perth and Western Australia are also abuzz with modern cultural activity. In fact WA’s isolation has resulted in cultural traditions that are truly unique and quite distinct from their urban Aussie counterparts to the east. Perth has more hours of sunshine then any other state capital in Australia. This has given rise to a prolific and rich outdoor culture. Entertaining, socializing and drinking outdoors, is simply the way life is lived over here. Western Australia is also the backdrop for such epics as Australia the movie, Rabbit Proof Fence and author Tim Winton’s multi award winning novel Dirt Music. The annual Perth Arts Festival is an arts fest of major international standing with a 55 year history with loads of free entertainment and gigs.
