CITIZEN ALERT Are you the victim of tax return identity theft? If you attempted to file your tax return and were notified your identity had already been used to file a tax return an identity theft report will need to be filed with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The IRS requires that you initially make a report with your local police department prior to making a report with them. The IRS will require you to provide your local police department case number in order to proceed with the identity theft investigation. When making a report with the IRS be prepared to present valid identification, your local police case number, and any documentation of the identity theft that you may have. A report should be made at the local Tax Payer Service Office.
