CLUB NEWS

March Madness Is Upon Us! This has nothing to do with college basketball! March is a crazy month in that it is our transition to break out of winter mode and to get our facilities prepared for the fastapproaching season ahead. Not to mention that March 2023 is also the final month of the 2022 Membership year! You may have received, or you will receive shortly, Troon's annual dues announcement for the 2023 Membership year, April 1, 2023, through March 31, 2024. Once again, the Club will be offering a 4% discount for annual dues payments by check, along with a member's "Perk-Pac" to enjoy the many Club amenities throughout our Ocean Edge property. The 2023 Annual Dues announcement will be posted on the Club Website along with the Annual Dues Form, as well as emailed to all Members to review and download the form to return to the Club.

With March upon us the Golf Agronomy Team is working on preparing the course to reopen, which is currently slated for Friday, March 24, weather permitting. There is a lot that Craig and his team must do to be ready for the opening, so please refrain from walking or playing the course over the next few weeks. There will be numerous turf applications that need to be put down and we do not want anyone on the course during these needed treatments. Additionally, please note that the surface turf is soft right now and divots / ball marks will not heal, thus when we open those scars will remain and be in place for weeks. The sub-level turf temperature needs to be at a constant 52 degrees or higher to germinate new seed and to allow for existing turf to regenerate, so March can give us nice days, but the cold nights and thawing process over the winter takes time for the turf to reach this temperature level. Please keep this in mind, as ideally, we open with the best possible health for our turf to withstand the stress of summer, so your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

March weather also dictates our outdoor pool schedules and reopening. In a perfect world, we will be able to drain the Bay Pines outdoor pool, power-wash and chlorine wash the walls and base of the pool to fill and filtrate for an April 1 opening. The Member Sports Club pool requires the same process and is on a similar timeline but for an April 7 opening. However, in order to make this happen, we need great March weather. For Bayside to open on April 1, we need to have the pool filled and flowing with State Lab tests in by March 20. This date provides enough time for the Brewster Board of Health to receive the State Lab results, inspect and test the pool so that they too confirm results and safety standards, then permit us to open on our desired date. For the Member Sports Club, the same timeline of the testing and permitting process exists, just pushed back oneweek, Pools are a lot of work and need an extraordinary amount of time to be ready for season and with the March weather being unpredictable, it makes for a mad-month!

As March closes on Friday the 31st, we will roll into April where Tennis and Pickleball will be back in action, Jim returns early April and will have the Bay Pines courts ready to play by the 7th, weather permitting. In the meantime, throughout March and early April, we do have two Tennis nets up at Fletcher to play as the weather permits. Additionally, over the course of the winter, we did line two of the Fletcher Tennis Courts with Pickleball lines, we have new Professional Portable Pickleball Nets in place for those who want to enjoy a game of Pickleball at Fletcher while the Blueberry Pond courts are being prepared for season.

On behalf of the entire Club Management Team, we look forward to the new Membership year and thank you for being part of our Club!

Sincerely,

GOLF

Friday, March 24th will be our first official day of the 2023 Golf Season here at Ocean Edge, weather dependent. We anxiously await the warmer weather and getting our members onto the golf course.

As we begin to look forward to the golf course opening, we are equally excited to open the driving range in April. Our driving range enhancement project will start with the members' end of the driving range. We purchased new upgraded bag stands, tee dividers, and apple crates to complement our members-only tee. The addition of Adirondack chairs, a table, and a housing unit for water and trash will round out these new additions. On the warm-up end, we will implement a new rotational schedule to allow us to hit from grass 6 days a week. With new bag stands and tee dividers complimented by our den caddies and new Adirondack chairs to complete the new look on our warm-up tee. Craig and his team will be installing a new walkway and stairs from the parking circle to further enhance the aesthetic as you arrive at the driving range. We didn't stop there and will be adding new barber poles throughout the range to give each golfer many more targets to shoot at while practicing and warming up before the round. We can't wait to get started on these new additions and amenities to arrive that will give our range a whole new dimension we are sure you will enjoy.

If you have not signed up for the OEWGA or OEMGA the season is quickly approaching starting in May. Our Ladies' & Men’s associations are a great way to get involved with golf here at Ocean Edge. Please find information regarding applications, calendars, and by-laws on our Ocean Edge Club’s Member website.

As a Troon Prive Club, we have the opportunity to play some great courses across the country and beyond. Head to the Troon website (www.troonprive.com) under prive privileges to see a full listing of eligible courses in each state.

While tree removals and pruning are the exciting part of our winter, the most labor-intensive as well as tedious part for the agronomy team is the clean-up. All tree work debris is staged near cart paths and readily accessible areas for us to process through a woodchipper. The process of chipping takes 2 weeks to cover the entire golf course from 3 months’ worth of debris. Any large tree logs that can't be chipped are hauled off the property. Pictured below is a before and after picture of the 6th hole to show the extent of how much debris we have on the course. This hole took us the better part of a day to chip all our tree removals and pruning debris. Once we wrap up our tree clean-up, the prep for course-wide clean-up begins.

One area that we have been working on throughout the winter is the space between the 5th and 11th holes. We are working on opening vistas between the two holes. This will create a better view and provide an opportunity to find those errant golf shots. This will also allow better airflow which will improve turf health. Below is a before and after photo of the clearing between the 11th and 5th holes.

We are looking forward to welcoming you back on the golf course soon for the start of our golf season!

MEMBER SPORTS CLUB

Happy March Ocean Edge Members! I have had a lot of questions recently about what people can do to improve posture. I have included this article from medlineplus.gov. I love how it breaks down why posture is so important and the different ways you can improve it daily. Bad posture not only affects how you hold your body, but it can also even affect your joints and food digestion. The article lists do’s and don’ts even when you are seated. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions we are here to help you reach your fitness goals!

Good posture is about more than standing up straight so you can look your best. It is an important part of your long-term health. Making sure that you hold your body the right way, whether you are moving or still, can prevent pain, injuries, and other health problems.

What is posture? Posture is how you hold your body. There are two types:

Dynamic posture is how you hold yourself when you are moving, like when you are walking, running, or bending over to pick up something. Static posture is how you hold yourself when you are not moving, like sitting, standing, or sleeping.

It is important to make sure that you have good dynamic and static posture. The key to good posture is the position of your spine. Your spine has three natural curvesat your neck, mid-back, and low back. Correct posture should maintain these curves, but not increase them. Your head should be above your shoulders, and the top of your shoulder should be over the hips.

How can posture affect my health?

Poor posture can be bad for your health. Slouching or slumping over can:

Misalign your musculoskeletal system

Wear away at your spine, making it more fragile and prone to injury · cause neck, shoulder, and back pain

Decrease your flexibility

Affect how well your joints move · affect your balance and increase your risk of falling

Make it harder to digest your food

Make it harder to breathe

How can I improve my posture in general?

Be mindful of your posture during everyday activities, like watching television, washing dishes, or walking

Stay active. Any kind of exercise may help improve your posture, but certain types of exercises can be especially helpful. They include yoga, tai chi, and other classes that focuses on body awareness. It is also a good idea to do exercises that strengthen your core (muscles around your back, abdomen, and pelvis).

Maintain a healthy weight. Extra weight can weaken your abdominal muscles, cause problems for your pelvis and spine, and contribute to low back pain. All of these can hurt your posture.

Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes. High heels, for example, can throw off your balance and force you to walk differently. This puts more stress on your muscles and harms your posture.

Make sure work surfaces are at a comfortable height for you, whether you ' re sitting in front of a computer, making dinner, or eating a meal.

How can I improve my posture when sitting?

Many Americans spend a lot of their time sitting - either at work, at school, or at home. It is important to sit properly, and to take frequent breaks:

Switch sitting positions often

Take brief walks around your office or home

Gently stretch your muscles every so often to help relieve muscle tension

Don't cross your legs; keep your feet on the floor, with your ankles in front of your knees

Make sure that your feet touch the floor, or if that's not possible, use a footrest

Relax your shoulders; they should not be rounded or pulled backwards

Keep your elbows in close to your body. They should be bent between 90 and 120 degrees.

Make sure that your back is fully supported. Use a back pillow or other back support if your chair does not have a backrest that can support your lower back's curve.

Make sure that your thighs and hips are supported. You should have a well-padded seat, and your thighs and hips should be parallel to the floor.

How can I improve my posture when standing?

Stand up straight and tall

Keep your shoulders back

Pull your stomach in

Put your weight mostly on the balls of your feet

Keep your head level

Let your arms hang down naturally at your sides

Keep your feet about shoulder-width apart

With practice, you can improve your posture; you will look and feel better.

Best, Heidi and the MSC team

Teriyaki Salmon with Baby Bok Choy & Shiitakes

PREPPING TIME: 5 MIN

COOKING TIME: 15 MIN

Ingredients:

8–16 ounces salmon (2 pieces, skinless)

4 baby Bok choy cut into quarters or eight –

1/2 inch -3/4 inch thick at the widest point.

4 ounces shiitake mushrooms · pinch salt and pepper

Orange zest (optional) · Optional Garnishes: toasted sesame seeds, chopped scallions, sriracha or chili flakes

Teriyaki Marinade:

4 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce

(don’t use Tamari-too salty)

2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar · 2 tablespoons honey, maple syrup, agave, or brown sugar

1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil · 1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

1 finely minced garlic clove

Directions:

Step 1. Pre Heat oven to 350F

Step 2. Place the salmon, bok choy and optional mushrooms on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Step 3. Whisk marinade ingredients (soy, vinegar, honey, sesame oil, and ginger, garlic ) together in a small bowl and spoon it over the fish and veggies, coating all sides well

Step 4. Sprinkle the salmon with a pinch of salt and pepper and optional orange zest, then place the sheet pan in the oven, checking the salmon after 10 minutes. Then broil for the last few minutes to give the salmon a little color. Depending on how thick or thin the salmon is, it may be done sooner, or need a few more minutes- so remove it if need be (thinner cuts will cook faster) and continue cooking the bok choy until it is just tender ( yet green and vibrant and crisp).

Step 5 Divide among 2 bowls.

Step 6. Sprinkle the bowl with toasted sesame seeds, or Furikake, scallions, and chili flakes or sriracha for heat.
