13th Annual HALL Cabernet Cookoff, April 30 Culinary teams compete for charity by creating a dish that best pairs with 2019 HALL Jack’s Masterpiece Cabernet Sauvignon HALL, one of the world’s most notable Cabernet Sauvignon producers, has announced plans for its thirteenth annual Cabernet Cookoff to return on Saturday, April 30 at HALL St. Helena. Hosted by Vintner Kathryn Hall, the annual event will feature an impressive lineup of renowned culinary teams vying for a chance to win proceeds for a charity of their choice by participating in a food and wine pairing competition. 100% of ticket proceeds benefit non-profit organizations as selected by the winning chef teams. The event includes a VIP Culinary Stage event from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. prior to the Main Event that takes place from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. “We are thrilled to be able to host the Cabernet Cookoff in person this year,” says Vintner Kathryn Hall. “This event makes a difference for many lives in our community. So many people come together to celebrate passion for food and wine, and in the end, local non-profits garner awareness and proceeds. Everyone participating comes out a winner.” Chef teams are tasked to create a small dish that they feel pairs best with 2019 HALL Jack’s Masterpiece Cabernet Sauvignon, a top-rated wine that has earned praise from the wine industry’s top critics. The 2022 Cabernet Cookoff also serves as the release of the 2019 vintage of the Jack’s Masterpiece wine. Guests in attendance will sample all pairings to vote on the People’s Choice Awards, and a star-studded panel of celebrity judges will taste to vote for

A Toast to the Women Who Changed Wine (and Minds)

arch is National Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize how their achievements in a variety of fields positively contribute to and enrich different industries. Here in Northern California’s wine country, we are proud to recognize the women who bravely followed their passions and pioneered a path in viticulture and viniculture, and to highlight current women winemakers who are showing the world new approaches to growing, crafting, and appreciating wine. Of the more than 4,000 bonded wineries in California, approximately 14% of them reported a woman as their lead winemaker, according to an updated 2020 study by Lucia Albino Gilbert, Ph.D., and John Carl Gilbert, Ph.D., emeritus professors at Santa Clara University. Napa Valley leads the way, with approximately 12% of winemakers being female. To date, three women have been inducted into the Vintners Hall of Fame. For much of history, women were not allowed to participate in the world of winemaking, whether the vineyard, cellar, or winery. Either by way of overt declarations or subtle insinuations, they were simply not welcomed.

As wine became a valuable possession and commodity for trade, vineyards (and all property) were passed down from male owners to their sons. All avenues to power, profit, and property were awarded to men via inheritance, as wives and daughters were considered property of husbands and fathers. The first women who did move into positions of power usually did so via the death of a spouse. In 1880, Ellen Mary Stewart (for whom the town of Glen Ellen is named) had to petition the Sonoma County courts to let her run her winery business after the death of her husband. Similarly, in 1882, Hannah Weinberger became the first woman winemaker in Napa Valley of Weinberger Winery after her husband’s death. In 1904, Isabelle Simi, generally considered the first female commercial winemaker in the United States, found herself in charge of the family winery at the age of 18 after both her father and brother succumbed to the flu. Fortunately, the modern era offered educational opportunities in winemaking, and in 1965,

Mary Ann Graf was the first woman to receive an enology degree from UC Davis. She eventually became winemaker at Simi Winery in Healdsburg in 1973. With winemaking programs at UC Davis and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, enrollment slowly began to include more women. From these notable universities, many women have been the first to push open doors closed to them for so long. Many are worth mentioning, but here are a few that paved the way in California for women to pursue the art and science of winemaking. •••

The Trailblazers

There are many important women who boldly decided to forge a future in winemaking, but a few are notorious for their achievements in Sonoma and Napa Valleys.

Cathy Corison You can’t discuss women in the wine industry without recognizing Cathy Corison. She was the first woman to open her own winery in the Napa Valley. Despite the intimidation and general lack of confidence that her venture would be successful, Cathy was determined to prove them all wrong. She was one of the first women to receive her master’s degree in Enology from UC Davis, during a time when the classrooms were filled with men. In 1987 she made the first vintage of Corison Cabernet Sauvignon and established herself as a leading winemaker. Cathy describes her winemaking techniques as very traditional, using only small French oak barrels sourced from several forests for complexity. In recognition of her excellence as a winemaker, Cathy was named the 2011 Winemaker of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle. Cathy doesn’t just rest

on her laurels; she is an active, hands-on winemaker who spends much of her time and energy out in the vineyards, involved with every aspect of the meticulous process that is winemaking. The famous wine critic Jancis Robinson gushes, “Cathy Corison is my heroine. She makes such great wine - the essence of Napa Valley minus the bludgeoning force, plus a sensible price tag.” A trip to Corison winery is a must, but if you can’t visit, you can taste the passion and dedication of Corison wine with a bottle of the 2018 Corison Cabernet Sauvignon, St. Helena. Cathy describes the 2018 Cabernet as “the darkest, inkiest vintage in my memory, the result of an extremely long, cool ripening season with cold nights. Happily, natural acidity persists during ripening under these conditions and wildly complex flavors and aromas result. Because the weather was perfect at flowering, we had a bumper crop of deliciousness, making everyone happy.”

Heidi Barre Raised in the Napa Valley in a winemaking family, Heidi has become one of the most sought after independent winemakers. After graduating from UC Davis in 1980 with a B.S. in Fermentation Science, she began working for Franciscan Vineyards and Silver Oak. In 1988, she became an independent, freelance winemaker for a number of small wineries. Since that time, Heidi has developed a luxury client list, and was the winemaker for the notorious cult brand Screaming Eagle. Reflecting on winemaking, Heidi says, “You can’t just step in and be

the winemaker unless you have a lot of experience in the cellar. I wanted to make sure that when I finally had the title of winemaker, I had earned it.” Heidi’s words highlight that while women had broken through barriers to become winemakers, many women were not as welcomed in the vineyard or cellar.

Pam Starr Pam Starr has been the co-owner, manager and winemaker of Crocker & Starr since its inception in 1997. A pioneer in all levels of winemaking, she helped revive the vineyards on the Crocker Estate in St. Helena and established a winery to create world-class wines. After working for 18 years as a winery employee, Pam took the reins to become owner, manager and winemaker. She graduated from UC Davis in 1984 with a degree in Fermentation Science.

Helen Turley Helen Turley, a highly regarded winemaker and wine consultant, is a graduate of Cornell University. In 1977, she began working in the lab for Robert Mondavi Winery, followed by a short period at Chappellet Winery. In 1991 she planted a vineyard in the Sonoma Coast wine region, which at the time was largely undiscovered, and considered too cool to produce high-quality wine. This project developed into Marcassin, one of California’s most respected Pinot Noir and Chardonnay labels. For many years, she produced award-winning wines for Turley Wine Cellars, which is owned by her brother and was a consultant to numerous high-end wineries and cult brands. She has received numerous accolades for her wines over the past three decades and is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from Wine Spectator for 2010. Most recently, she has been named to the California Hall of Fame.

Geneviève Janssens As the Chief Winemaker for Robert Mondavi Winery, Geneviève has been meticulously crafting beautiful Napa wines since 1978. She received her National Diploma of Enology in 1974 and operated her own enology laboratory in Provence, France. Drawn to the Napa Valley, she worked at the Robert Mondavi Winery as a lab enologist and an assistant enologist. In 1989, she became Director of Production at Opus One Winery. In 1997, she came full circle as the Director of Winemaking at the Robert Mondavi Winery. She is renowned for developing the To Kalon Vineyards, recognized as one of the finest Grand Cru vineyards in the world.

The New Generation A very common catchphrase for the philosophy of winemaking is “good wine is made in the vineyard.” Vineyard management, soil, and grape quality all affect the final product. Yet few women serve as vineyard managers or cellar masters. Slowly, that is beginning to change. As Director of Vineyard Operations for Cliff Lede Vineyards in Napa Valley, Allison Wilson is responsible for farming and management of the winery’s three estate vineyards in the Stags Leap District, Carneros, and Calistoga AVAs. She works closely with the internal winemaking team as well as with external growers to acquire the best fruit. Alison graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo as a Fruit Science major in 2012. Brenae Royal is the Vineyard Manager at Monte Rosso, famed vineyard for Louis M. Martini winery. As a young black woman in a field dominated by men, Brenae brings a fresh outlook and new perspectives to a traditionally older, male role in winemaking. She applies her scientific background and love of farming with new technology to bring out the very best fruit. Her hard work is evident in every bottle of wine from Monte Rosso. “There’s a responsibility that I feel to use my voice, because I do know that a lot of people have reached out to me about how I inspire them and other things,” she says. And I want to continue to do that because it’s not just going to make the present day better for us, but it’s going to make the incoming wine professionals of color more comfortable as well. Dana Grande is the Grower Relations Manager at Jordan Winery, a role she developed after years of experience. Her in-depth knowledge of each vineyard and location allows her to select the best fruit that the winemaking team needs. “It takes a lot of time and experience to know the potential of a vineyard.” •••

If you like bubbles, you’ve probably enjoyed a bottle of Chandon. Pauline Lhote is a French female winemaker who oversees all sparkling wine production at Chandon. Lhote grew up on a farm in Champagne and earned a degree at the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne in Reims. She was the assistant winemaker for over ten years before being promoted to winemaker in 2015 and winemaking Director in 2016. Lauren Kopit is the Winemaker at Sterling Vineyards, a fantastic winery that serves up gorgeous estate views alongside remarkable wines. The gravity-flow production facility sit inside the cave walls with an entrance/exit on both sides of the hill. “It was here, in creating our 17,000 square foot underground cellar, that we discovered the long ago history of this land in the form of our sandpiper’s fossilized footsteps. here is a trend gaining more popularity in wine country, and producers continue to add another dimension to their current line-up: bourbon barrel-aged wine. In this arena, old-world charm meets a new-world innovation. Wine lovers who enjoy robust flavors and a glass of wine with weight on the palette and depth of taste find bourbon barrel-aged wine offers a richness and texture that is velvety and deep. Likewise, a bourbon barrel-aged wine profile can be surprisingly inviting for those who prefer whiskey over wine and bring another option to the table, especially for those wine- and beer-specific occasions.

Whiskey and wine share the barrel. Using bourbon barrels to make wine is not new for American winemakers. It has happened off and on in California for a long time. August Sebastiani, who aged portions of his reserve Barbera and Zinfandel in used bourbon barrels several decades ago, was probably one of the most famous alongside Jacob and Frederick Beringer. About 150 years ago, the Beringer’s were reusing barrels from their distillery to produce some of Napa’s earliest wines. In those days, the economic decision of recycling barrels just made sense financially. Bourbon barrels were more common, easy to find, and cheaper than the acclaimed French oak barrels. Today, modern bourbon barrel-aged wine is less about keeping costs low and more about boosting flavor and richness in wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, red blends, and Chardonnay, as well as being a part of the curious craft boom. In 2014, after a series of brainstorming meetings to create a crossover product that appealed to a new wine-buying demographic, Fetzer winemaker Bob Blue launched the bourbon barrel-aged wines called 1000 Stories, where “tradition meets innovation.”

There’s a widespread appeal to the taste profile. A key component in this flavor and richness is that bourbon barrels must be constructed from new, heavily toasted American oak. Winemakers find that the charring and increased wood-to-wine ratio of the bourbon barrels, taller and skinnier than traditional wine barrels, actually lends an all-new profile to a richer and more intense wine.

WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

Cabs, Zins, and Chardonnays produced in bourbon barrels naturally take on the warm notes of caramel, maple, vanilla, and brown sugar. In the wine glass, the toasted oak bourbon barrels add a hint of smokiness that pair well with bold cheeses and steaks but are also drinkable enough for your average week night.

Sauvignon. Trinchero is able to source bourbon barrels from its own Amador Whiskey distillery. Forty-year-old Cosentino Winery, one of the first in Napa Valley to create a Bordeaux-inspired Meritage, also arrived early on the bourbon barrel-aged scene, making a bourbon barrel-aged Cabernet Sauvignon that reports a smooth, intense beauty.

Several more wineries and award-winning producers in Sonoma and Napa offer online sales and in-person or virtual experiences to taste and savor their bourbon-barreled wines. Robert Mondavi Winery, a pioneering Napa Valley estate, sources bourbon barrels from a Kentucky bourbon distillery and produces an award-winning bourbon barrel-aged Chardonnay, as well as bourbon barrel-aged Cabernet Sauvignon. Beringer Vineyards has returned to the spirit barrel production with four affordable varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. Trinchero Family produces two bourbon barrel-aged wines, Batch No. 198 Bourbon Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon and Ménage à Trois Bourbon Barrel Cabernet

It seems that bourbon barrel-aged wines keep trending upward, appealing to people who might not otherwise drink wine, as well as to those wine lovers looking for a robust flavor. Creating a crossover product that merges two worlds of taste and preference is enticing to a new audience. It is gaining popularity with an old-fashioned whisky-loving crowd and traditionalists who enjoy their classic wines! The best way to know if you like something is to try it. So, grab a bottle and some friends and share the pleasure of tasting into the modern wine era. Baldacci Family Estate Vineyards NV Pops Blanc de Blancs Sparkling Wine $50 This Chardonnay-based bubbly hits all the right notes for sparkling wine. The lovely bouquet boasts aromas of citrus zest, chamomile, and brioche. It’s aged on the lees for 20 months, giving it a wonderfully nu¦y and brioche-like palate that’s wrapped up with crisp green apple and sweet Meyer lemon. This dry, elegant sparkling drinks beautifully on its own, but could easily be paired with shellfish favorites like simply dressed oysters.

Frank Family Vineyards 2018 Winston Hill Cabernet Sauvignon $175 Having just received 95+ points, the 2018 Winston Hill Cabernet Sauvignon is a show-stopper. It’s a well-balanced Cab that shows sophistication and complexity even in its youth. Bountiful cassis, baking spice, and cedar unfold on the palate. The tannins are remarkably smooth, but robust enough to carry this wine through time gracefully. The quality and expression in this Cabernet undoubtedly come from the powerful terroir of this original estate vineyard and the consistent growing season that graced Napa Valley in 2018.

Sebastiani Vineyards 2018 Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon $125 This flagship Cabernet from Sebastiani Vineyards is cra ed with fruit from the historic Cherryblock Vineyard—a hallowed Sonoma Valley site known for producing intricate and terroir-driven wines. A unique feature of this Bordeaux varietal beauty is that most of the fruit sourced for the wine is from an Old Vines block dating to 1961. Unapologetic in its varietal typicity, the 2018 Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon expresses dark, deep aromas of cassis, dried tobacco leaf, and wet stones. Black cherry and cedar create a lovely flavor combination on the palate alongside integrated tannins, subtle spice notes, and a long finish.

Wine Tasting

Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect. Additionally, Covid-19 has made it necessary for some changes and adaptations. Following the guidelines and etiquette tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine country. Due to Covid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go: • Plan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be reserved. • Understand that there may be a time limit • Ask about the different tasting experiences and costs. • If you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person. • If this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly. • Be sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.) • Be flexible • Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart. • Don’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine. “Good wine” is what you like. Period. • You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those little sips add up fast. • You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like. • Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will! • Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a

small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)? • Ask questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help. • Don’t feel pressured to buy a bottle or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bottle). • Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting). • Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and try not to wear white! • Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit. • Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries. • Eat breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine. • Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a baguette, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery • Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day. • If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being. • Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them. • Enjoy yourself! Please be respectful of all conditions and procedures. Wineries have had challenges to adjust their normal procedures due to Covid-19. Everything they do is to insure your safety, pleasure and that you have a great time. Covid-19 has had many positive effects for wine tasting: More intimate, less crowded, more time to really talk to your winery host. With this is mind ... let’s go tasting and have fun!
