Plan a visit to experience one of the numerous guest tasting experiences that make Ferrari-Carano more special than ever before. Here are a few highlights:
An Extra Special Experience: Sunday Wine & Brunch A destination not just for acclaimed wines but also for delicious food pairings, Chef Alec Graham makes liberal use of the winery’s organic culinary gardens to create seasonal offerings in celebration of la dolce vita. Sunday Wine & Brunch is no exception. Served outdoors in the Sycamore Grove (or indoors in inclement weather), guests enjoy a flight of reserve limited-release wines and an incredible Italian-inspired menu. Fontana Pergola Wine Tasting Just in time for balmy weather is the Pergola Tasting Experience. This never-before-accessible area of the winery opened to the public for the first time last year. Seating up to eight in a private tasting and hosted in one of the stunning outdoor pergolas, guests will enjoy a flight of five reserve wines surrounded by towering olive trees, a burbling fountain, and landscaped gardens.
Nibbles to Complement Sips: No tasting is complete without a little nosh. For that reason, each of Ferrari-Carano’s wine tasting experiences can be elevated with an add-on of either cheese and salumi or chocolate bonbons. The satisfying cheese and salumi boards feature local artisans and are prepared by Estate Chef Alec Graham. The delectable Fleur Sauvage Chocolate Bonbon plates are handcrafted by local chocolatier Chef Robert “Buttercup” Nieto and are the perfect sweet addition to the wines (bonbons require a 48-hour advance reservation). For all tastings, reservations are advised but walkins are also welcome as space allows. Whether making a reservation for a special event or just popping in for an impromptu tasting, Ferrari-Carano is one of Wine Country’s not-to-be-missed destinations. Make plans now to catch the spring blooms and/or balmy weather that comes with the season. Ferrari-Carano Vineyards & Winery is located at 8761 Dry Creek Road in Healdsburg. For reservations, call 707-433-6700 or go to Ferrari-Carano.com.
Classic and Reserve Wine Tastings: Classic Tasting Relax and enjoy views of the vineyards, gardens, and fountains outdoors on Il Terrazo or inside the Villa Fiore Guest Experience Center. Learn about the winery’s winemaking philosophy and vineyard practices while sampling a flight of four award-winning wines. Reserve Wine Tasting Perfect for the passionate wine enthusiast, the intimate Reserve Wine Tasting comprises five vineyard-designate wines served in the Enoteca or, in the beautifully appointed Villa Salon. Hosted by an Estate Ambassador who will lead a discussion on vineyards and winemaking while focusing on the role each plays in the wine being sipped, these limited release wines are often not available anywhere but the winery. MAKING EVERYDAY
Earth Day in
WINE COUNTRY BY LAURA NESS
Every day is Earth Day for people who practice and not just preach. Benziger Winery in Glen Ellen always comes to mind as a shining and thriving example of working in harmony with nature, judiciously implementing Rudolph Steiner’s biodynamic practices to great benefit. From the first sight of the vineyards, teaming with birds and butterflies, and the sheep grazing the cover crop in spring, you can feel the heartbeat of a healthy ecosystem. And the wines are amazing, especially the Estate tier, which includes Tribute, Joaquin’s Inferno and Oonapais, all biodynamically farmed. An amazing place to celebrate Earth Day! Chris Benziger will be leading Earth Day hikes at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on April 22. Reservations are required. Winemaker and general manager of Bouchaine Vineyards since 2015, Chris Kajani spearheaded Bouchaine’s involvement in Napa Green, achieving certification in 2018. She introduced composting to halt erosion and boost soil nutrients, falconry and beneficial insects for pest management, and sheep for weed control, minimizing tractor usage and soil compaction. The vineyard employs Cisco Industrial sensors to monitor water usage. “As the longest continuously family-owned winery in Carneros, we are committed to preserving this land for generations,” says Kajani. “We are always looking towards the future to find new ways to be sustainable: sustainable farming allows for healthy vines which make delicious wines!” Try their Pinot Noirs. Kathleen Inman of Inman Family Wines in Sonoma practices “eco-ethics” at every level, from driving an EV (Mustang MachE) to using sleek countertops made from recycled glass, concrete and sequestered fly ash, a byproduct of burning coal. “I rebuilt the old barn that was originally constructed in 1883 and then redone in 1943, reusing all the foundation materials and every bit of the old redwood. These materials have been repurposed three times now!” She installed a state-of-the-art solar system (West Coast Solar) on the barn roof and was the first to have an electric car charging station (Chargepoint) in Sonoma County in 2007. “We were so excited to see the first Prius use it! Our two charging stations are entirely solar powered, and people use them every day. It’s like filling up on sunshine!” She also nourishes her 10.5-acre organic Olivet Grange Vineyard with food scrap compost from Recology. “We never till our cover crop, and I apply compost tea through the drip irrigation lines according to lunar cycles, at bud break, bloom, fruit set and in early June. Otherwise, we do not irrigate.” Her Endless Crush Rosé is the perfect spring beauty. In 2009, Anaba Wines became the first in Northern California to install a 45-foot Skystream wind turbine on the Carneros property, allowing the anabatic winds from San Pablo Bay and the Pacific Ocean to provide power. They’ve since added solar and are now producing more energy than they consume. Winemaker and General Manager Joe Nielsen of Ram’s Gate

Winery, who joined the Carneros estate in 2018, immediately set the vineyards on a path to organic farming. Certification is expected in 2023. He’s ultimately reduced water usage by 33%, and employs a team of sheep, owls and hawks for natural weed and pest control. Joe believes that delicious wines can only come from a thoughtfully tended vineyard and is constantly researching and experimenting with new techniques to improve the health and wellness of the vines. Helping vineyards achieve optimum soil health naturally, is the mission of AgVerra, (Santa Rosa). Owner Michah Bernstein provides foliars and amendments like humic acid and seaweed fertilizers to improve soil quality and help vines better uptake water and nutrients. “We provide a methodology of soil and crop nutrients that creates long term sustainability for soil and plants,” says Bernstein, whose company, Zeltec Biologicals, creates the products. “Healthier plants and more robust grapes make better wine. We have been able to reduce shrivel during hangtime. Growers cut water to let sugars build, and we can increase brix without damaging plant health, while maintaining plant vitality.” Up in the Anderson Valley, Ferrington Vineyard, owned by Kurt Shoeneman since 1996, produces grapes for many labels, including Williams Seylem, Handley Cellars and Fathers+Daughters. His daughter,
AgVerra, Santa Rosa
Sarah, is married to Guy Pacuar, and their daughter, Ella, inspired the generational label. Norman Kobler is the vineyard manager, and his family established Lazy Creek (now Twomey). Sheep graze weeds in the vineyard while the vines are dormant, and are taken out when buds begin to swell. Says Kobler, who runs the sheep, “Benefits are: you can save on mowing, the vineyard gets fertilized, and you get fresh lamb meat. The downsides are they are hard on the trellis and drip hose.” Nothing about farming is easy, otherwise, more people would do it. To make organic farming greener, easier and more cost-effective, Monarch Tractor, initially kicked off by Carlo Mondavi, offers small EV machines with 14+ hours of run-time. You can eliminate the equivalent of 14 on-road vehicles by swapping a diesel equivalent for a MK-V tractor. Wente in Livermore was the first vineyard to deploy them. In the Sanel Valley of Hopland in Mendocino County, Ettore Wines brings people together from several

different countries and cultures to create their shared vision through organic farming of a vineyard that has been Certified Organic since 2005. It was planted by the Milone family. Winemaker Sofia Rivier tells us, “We use all organic inputs, previously approved by CCOF at the vineyard and winery. The cover crops used are an organic mix of bell beans, Dundale Peas, Cayuse Oats and Excede Wheat.” As a Member of 1% for the Planet, Wentworth Vineyard and Ranch, in the extreme coastal Mendocino Ridge AVA near Elk, and one of the Westernmost vineyards in the US, farms organically and donates a portion of wine sales to support organizations like the Save the Redwoods League, Mendocino Woodlands Camp Association, Save the Yellowstone Grizzly, and the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. Says farmer Mark Wentworth, who also owns the famed Nash Mill Vineyard in Anderson Valley, now organically farmed, “5% of our April sales will be donated to the Save the Redwoods League, in addition to a several thousand dollar gift in support of their work.” Winemaker Ross Reedy of VML in the Dry Creek Valley, seeks vineyards that contain magic: something in the air, the wind and the soil that makes it a perfect lens for a wine

that becomes the ultimate snapshot of terroir. Vineyards like Ritchie, Starscape and Mes Filles. If you look closely at the label, the words, “Wines guided by the sun, the moon and the stars,” are an homage to the organic garden and vineyards at the VML tasting room, a brand established by Paul Dolan, who sparked Fetzer’s move to organic production over two decades ago. The abundance of life is reflected in the wines, translating the Latin beneath—Vinum Magica Laetitia— which means wine, magic and joy. Third-generation Napa Valley farmer Tom Gamble of Gamble Family Vineyards is first and foremost a steward of the land. Having already secured Napa Green status and championing the Fish Friendly Farming Initiative and Napa Valley River Restoration Project, both of which he helped establish, Gamble Family Vineyards is currently in the
process of securing a Regenerative Organic Farming Certification. His motivation? “A deep and abiding affection for the land upon which I was born, live, and which provides for me. By giving back to the land, I am paying it forward. ‘It’ being a sustainable model that will benefit not only the land, but the humans— both family and beyond—who will come after us.” With the earth in such crisis, what gives Gamble hope? “All of the people I have met around the world who are taking proactive steps to make a difference. Behind the loud headlines and demonstrations, there is more going on than most are aware. People around the world are practicing ‘think globally, act locally,’ to improve their communities. I’m inspired by a technologically connected global community with a shared mission taking positive small steps in the right direction.”

Los Carneros
One of California’s First American Viticultural Areas 150+ Years of Grape Growing BY LAURA NESS
Los Carneros AVA, located at the southern end of Napa Valley and the northern end of Sonoma Valley, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. This appellation, which is known for producing exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines, was established in 1983 and was one of the first American Viticultural Areas to be designated based on its unique climate and geography. Over the past four decades, Los Carneros has become a leading wine region in California, attracting visitors from all over the world to its picturesque vineyards and wineries. The 40th anniversary is a significant milestone for this AVA, as it recognizes the hard work and dedication of the growers and winemakers who have helped to establish Los Carneros as a premier wine destination. Bordering the San Pablo Bay, with unique soils and a distinctive maritime influence, Los Carneros (“the rams” in Spanish), encompasses 37,000 acres, of which over 10,000 acres are under vine, approximately 70% of which are in Sonoma County. is home to 45 wineries, the first of which was established in the early 1870s. The first post-Prohibition winery was established by John Garetto at the present site of Bouchaine Vineyards. Subsequently, Andre Tchelistcheff and Louis M. Martini sparked renewed interest in the cool-climate region, and Beaulieu Vineyards and the Sangiacomo family became powerhouses here in the 1980s. Louis Martini’s purchase of historic Stanly Ranch in 1942, now owned by The Duckhorn Portfolio, led it to playing a key role in viticulture. It was here that in the 1950s, Martini, the Wente family and UC Davis conducted clonal trials for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Today, the vineyard’s five clones of Pinot Noir and three clones of Chardonnay go to the Migration label. Some say it’s dandy for sparkling, and those at Domaine Carneros would not disagree: after all, the rolling hills, already planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, reminded Claude Taittinger of his beloved Champagne. So much so, that in 1987, he purchased a 138-acre parcel of land in the heart of Carneros. Among those joining Bouchaine Vineyards and Domaine Carneros in making stellar wines from this piece of land under the influence of San Pablo Bay, are Ram’s Gate, Hyde, Schug and Saintsbury. Of course, there are many others, but these provide a good random sampling.

environmentally friendly practices has earned it certifications from organizations such as the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance and International Wineries for Climate Action. Visitors to the winery can enjoy a range of unique and immersive tasting experiences, from guided tours to private tastings, all with beautiful views of the winery’s Carneros estate vineyards. Bouchaine Vineyards lays claim to being the oldest continuously operating winery in the Carneros AVA – since the late 1880s. With 104 acres of land just north of the San Pablo Bay, they are blessed with a constant supply of wine and fog, the perfect environment for stellar Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Winemaker and General Manager Chris Kajani brings Pinot prowess and Carneros knowledge from nine years at Saintsbury and has upped the game at Bouchaine with a new event center and a focus on single clones. black fruit and almost obtusely dense, whereas Swan offers a perfumey red-lipped grace. Pommard hits a deeper earthy note of dusty cocoa and the combo of all of them is, well, divine. Hyde Vineyards was founded by Larry Hyde in 1979, and today consists of 200 acres across five different vineyard properties in Carneros, providing fruit to 35 different wineries, including Dumol, Kistler, Ramey, Schramsberg and Paul Hobbs. Named Napa Valley Grower of the Year in 2020, Hyde’s efforts have helped establish Carneros as a premium region for chardonnay and pinot noir. Artesa Winery is known for producing high-quality, smallbatch wines that are crafted using sustainable farming practices. The winery's signature wine is the Estate Reserve Pinot Noir, which has been praised for its complex flavors and elegant structure. Artesa also offers a range of other varietals, including Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Visitors to the winery can enjoy tours and tastings, as well as stunning views of the surrounding vineyards and hillsides.
Donum Estate Winery is a premium winery that produces world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. The winery's focus on quality is evident in its commitment to organic and biodynamic farming practices, which result in grapes that express the unique terroir of the estate vineyards. Donum’s winemaking philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the grapes to speak for themselves in each vintage. The winery also produces Chardonnay and a range of other Pinot Noir bottlings, including singlevineyard and estate blends. The winery's stunning grounds feature a sculpture garden with works from some of the world's most renowned contemporary artists. Cuvaison boasts breathtaking views of rolling hills and lush vineyards. The winery's modern tasting room offers an inviting atmosphere to sample their awardwinning Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Visitors can take a guided tour of the winery, which includes a walk through the vineyards, a behind-the-scenes look at the winemaking process, and a

tasting of their limited-production wines. Cuvaison Winery is known for its commitment to sustainable and organic farming practices, which makes the experience of visiting the winery even more unique and special. Ram’s Gate Winery’s Director of Winemaking and General Manager, Joe Nielsen, along with Assistant Winemaker Orrin Oles and Enologist Rachel Bordes, are making compelling wines from their front yard and back yard. High on a windy hill, it’s the first winery you see after passing Sonoma Raceway. The first wine you should taste is the estate Pinot Blanc. A standout is the 2019 Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay, made from the Musqué and Robert Young selections for amped up aromatics and a sense of voluptuous minerality that is like a soprano lingering forever on the perfect note. The 2019 Ram’s Gate Estate Pinot Noir is a fascinatingly
concentrated yet lifted concoction of chocolate, baking spice, tangerine and coriander. Established over 40 years ago by Walter Schug, who was the founding winemaker of Joseph Phelps winery, Schug Winery is now headed up by young GermanAmerican winemaker, Johannes Scheid. It’s fitting as Schug’s heritage goes back to Germany’s Rheingau region, where Pinot Noir has been planted for centuries. Carneros called to Schug for its Pinot Noir suitability. With its iconic block lettered “S” evoking illuminated medieval manuscripts, Saintsbury has been a bastion of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay since its founding in 1981 by two guys who met in a brewing class at UC Davis: the late Richard Ward and David Graves, who worked harvests together at Chappellet and Stag’s Leap. They named the winery for George Saintsbury, a literary historian and
oenophile (1845-1933). Their first “Garnet” Pinot Noir was made to great acclaim in 1983. The 13-acre Home Ranch estate was planted in 1986, using Pommard cuttings from their friend David Adelsheim in Oregon. English Lit major Byron Kosuge was winemaker here from 1985 until 2001 before going to Miura and McIntyre. Since 2015, Tim Colla, a graduate of Columbia University, where he studied Fine Art and Chemistry, has been Lead Winemaker here. Try the Vincent Vin Gris: yes, named for that Vincent. The artful spirit lives on. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings and tours, take in the stunning views of the rolling hills and grapevines, and learn about the winemaking process from knowledgeable staff. With its laidback ambiance, breathtaking scenery, and exceptional wines, Carneros is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to explore California's wine country.
Los Carneros Viticultural Area boasts vineyard views as beautiful as the wines they produce. The region offers a variety of wineries options – from small, family-owned to larger estates. Here, the wines, views, and even the architecture are nothing short of stunning!

Merryvale Vineyards Celebrates 40th Anniversary Merryvale Vineyards celebrates its 40th anniversary through 2023 with a series of events to highlight the past and offer a look to the future. Founded in 1983, Merryvale Vineyards’ is celebrating its 40th anniversary through 2023 with a series of events to highlight the past forty years of Merryvale’s Napa Valley wines, while also providing a sneak-peak to future wine releases. Over the last four decades, Merryvale Vineyards has established itself as the quintessential St. Helena winery. Owned and operated by the Schlatter Family since 1992, Merryvale Vineyards has remained true to its Napa Valley roots while adapting to the ever-evolving wine industry and trends. When asked what forty years means to Merryvale Vineyards, René Schlatter, proprietor, commented: “It means longevity, consistency of quality and style and keeping our eyes on the horizon. This anniversary is particularly significant to my family as it has allowed us to pause and reflect on the past and reconfirm our vision for the future.” René and his family are committed to preserving the winery’s rich history without compromising their forward-looking plans. Working closely with Winemaker, Andrew Wright, together they have sharpened their focus on Bordeaux varieties, the wines that make Napa Valley so famous. Doing so through further investments in exceptional top-notch people, vineyards, farming practices and equipment. The Schlatter family’s guiding business principles for the future include producing more Estate grown wines, remaining family owned and operated, keeping a European influence on their winemaking style and philosophy, and preserving the historic winery and Cask Room for future generations to enjoy. When further asked about his excitement for the future of Merryvale Vineyards, René focused on the importance of vineyard ownership and promising potential out of the newly acquired Mt. Veeder appellation vineyards. Today the family owns just over 42 acres, The Profile Estate, a 25-acre hillside vineyard overlooking St. Helena, and two sites comprised of 17 acres on Mt. Veeder. “Our dedication for growing and crafting supremely elegant Napa Valley wines is unwavering. Garagiste Festival, Historic Sonoma, April 29 Discover the next great micro-production winemakers The Garagiste Festival: Northern Exposure offers rare and first-look access to the best, hard-to-find wines from over 40 micro-production, commercial wineries. Held at the Sonoma Veterans Memorial Hall, walking distance from Sonoma’s historic downtown Plaza, the festival features wineries from Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino, Lodi, Sierra Foothills, Suisun Valley, Anderson Valley, El Dorado County and Santa Clara Valley. “‘Micro,’ ‘hand-crafted,’ ‘hard-to-find’ and ‘quality’ are terms that define the Garagiste Festival, and nowhere is this more in evidence than at our Sonoma festival: 90% of these wineries do not have a tasting room you can visit, 60% make less than 600 cases and four are pouring their very first vintage,” said Garagiste Co-founder Douglas Minnick. “The Sonoma Garagiste Festival is the only place where area wine lovers have this many opportunities to taste the region’s greatest micro-production wineries. all under one roof. While the festival ethos is ‘no-snobs allowed,’ its wine discovery opportunity is exclusive because we keep our crowds small for one-on-one interaction with the winemakers.” Minnick noted that 17 of this year’s wineries, are brand new to the Garagiste Festival, including: Bard Clan Wines, Belong Wine Co., Darling Wines, Elaine Wines, Fest Wine Co., Mangels Vineyards, Manzanita Grove Vineyard, Monroy Wines, Moose Mountain Vineyards, Parea Wines, Puppione Family Wines, Stressed Vines Cellars, Sugarloaf Wine Co., The Elkhoury Family Vineyard, Thomas T Thomas Vineyards, Tiny Vineyards Wine Co, and Tognetti Family Winery.
The line-up for the 5th annual Garagiste Festival: Northern Exposure includes: • VIP Rare and Reserve Access (1-2pm), featuring library, club only or reserve wines, only being poured during this first hour (VIP tickets only) • Grand Tasting (2pm-5pm) – 40+ winemakers, 150+ wines and 20+ grape varieties. Includes complimentary cheese and charcuterie, along with delicious food samples from local artisan vendors and a souvenir crystal wine glass. • Silent Wine Auction with proceeds supporting the Garagiste Scholarship at Cal Poly SLO, to help fund the future of California winemaking. Among the 40+ winemakers scheduled to pour are: Alta Orsa Wines, *Bard Clan Wines, *Belong Wine Co., Boonville Road Wines, Burning Bench, Calstar Cellars, Carpenter Wine, Cazadero Winery, Dane Cellars, *Darling Wines, *Elaine Wines, Enriquez Wines, *Fest Wine Co., Fields Family Wines, Forgotten Union Wines, Gondak Cellars, Greyscale Wines, Intent Wines, Kendric Vineyards, Kitson Wines, Lussier Wine Co., *Mangels Vineyards, *Manzanita Grove Vineyard, *Monroy Wines, *Moose Mountain Vineyards, Murder Ridge, Omega Road Winery, *Parea Wines, Perri Jaye Vineyards, Pine Mountain Vineyards, Prima Materia, *Puppione Family Wines, Read Holland Wines, Ricci Vineyards, Rock & Clay Wines, *Stressed Vines Cellars, *Sugarloaf Wine Co., *The Elkhoury Family Vineyard, The Grenachista Wine Co., *Thomas T Thomas Vineyards, *Tiny Vineyards Wine Co, and *Tognetti Family Winery. *New to the festival www.garagistefestival.com.

Moon Mountain District Winegrowers’ ‘Reach For The Moon!’ Inaugural Master Class and Grand Tasting with renowned wine authority Antonio Galloni The Moon Mountain District Winegrowers Association will hold the inaugural Moon Mountain District Master Class and Grand Tasting on Saturday, June 3 at the Gallo Family’s historic Monte Rosso Vineyard. Renowned wine authority and Vinous critic Antonio Galloni will host the Master Class, featuring a curated selection of wines made from celebrated Moon Mountain District sites, which are illustrated on Vinous’ groundbreaking new map of the region. A private tour of the Monte Rosso Vineyard, hosted by Ranch Manager Brenae Royal, follows. The Grand Tasting will include a wider offering of small-production wines from 30 of the Association’s members wineries, presented with a special menu developed by Executive Chef Joseph Paire of Berkeley’s Claremont Club and Spa Hotel. Wineries confirmed to present their Moon Mountain District wines at Reach for the Moon! include Kamen Estate, Louis M. Martini, Lasseter Family Winery, Repris Wines, Pangloss Cellars, B. Wise Vineyards, Stone Edge Farm Estate Vineyards & Winery, Bedrock Wine Company, Hanzell Vineyards and many more. One of the country’s newer American Viticultural Areas (AVA), having been officially recognized in 2013, the Moon Mountain District has been home to carefully tended mountainside vineyards and small-production wines for over 130 years. The AVA is noted for its early efforts in organic and biodynamic vineyard practices dating to the 1980s. “Although the Moon Mountain District AVA is young, the region is steeped in history.” Antonio Galloni continues, “Reach for the Moon! will shine a light on the world-class wines being made in one of the most fascinating and storied viticultural areas in California.”
28 0423 WCTM.indd 28
“As grape growers and winemakers in the Moon Mountain District, we carry on a generational commitment to serve as stewards of the AVA from which our highly regarded, small-production wines are sourced. Most of these wines are only available direct from the wineries or with limited distribution, so it’s a pleasure for us to share our wines at this first-ofits-kind event,” said Jim Momtazee, President of the Moon Mountain District Winegrowers Association and Proprietor of Moon Mountain Vineyard, Repris Wines and Pangloss Cellars. A portion of the proceeds will go to La Luz Center, supporting family services, economic advancement and community engagement. The limited Full Pass includes the Master Class, Monte Rosso Vineyard Tour and Grand Tasting: $400 per person. The Grand Tasting provides access to the walk-around tasting where guests will enjoy wines from more than 30 Moon Mountain District wineries along with food pairings designed to complement the wines: $250 per person. Located on the Sonoma County side of the Mayacamas Mountains, the Moon Mountain District AVA descends from the tallest ridge peaks at an elevation of 2,200 feet, down the mountain slopes to an elevation of roughly 400 feet. Bordeaux varieties comprise the vast majority of plantings on Moon Mountain, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, while Chardonnay is the major white grape variety. The AVA also produces Zinfandel and Syrah as well as other desirable Bordeaux varieties including Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot, plus Pinot Noir from the southwestern edge of the AVA. www.moonmountaindistrict.org WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH 3/16/23 2:26 PM

Delicious wines for springtime sipping Ehlers Estate 2021 Sauvignon Blanc, $38 This is a lovely and highly aromatic Sauvignon Blanc (made from the Sauvignon Blanc Musqué clone). The wine is fermented and aged for six months in 14.5% new French oak puncheon, 59% stainless steel, and 26.5% used French oak barrels; this unique combination gives the wine richness, weight, and pleasant notes of baking spice mixed in with the bright fruit flavors of mango and Meyer lemon zest. It shows off bright acidity and freshness.
Charles Krug Winery 2021 Sauvignon Blanc, $23 The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc from Charles Krug is a steal at $23 from this storied estate. It boasts classic Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc aromas of lemon blossom, guava, and abundant citrus peels. One-hundred percent stainless steel fermentation gives this wine a piercing line of acidity, gently balanced by the ripe fruit flavors.
Ketcham 2021 Viognier, $46 Viognier is one of those abundant white wines that keeps on giving. This one’s got a bountiful bouquet of peaches, pineapple, and white flowers. The balance of mouth-filling texture and bright acidity in this Viognier is delightful, giving it a nice complexity. It shows off notes of stone fruit and lemon curd with a minerally, lingering finish. This will be a lovely wine for spring, and one that
Robert Mondavi 2020 Estates Fumé Blanc, $65 True to its original style, Robert Mondavi’s 2020 Estate Fumé Blanc is comprised of 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Semillon for balance. It is aged on the lees for eight months in 30% new French oak barrels. Both the lees contact and the percentage of new oak are what distinguishes the signature Fumé Blanc style from other Sauvignon Blancs, and this expression showcases tropical aromas and palate notes of ripe white peach and passion fruit, with noticeable richness of texture. Tips on Wine Tasting Guidelines and Etiquette to Enhance Your Experience Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect. Following the guidelines and etiquette tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine country. Due to Covid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go: • Plan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be reserved. • Understand that there may be a time limit • Ask about the different tasting experiences and costs. • If you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person. • If this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly. • Be sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.) • Be flexible • Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart. • Don’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine. “Good wine” is what you like. Period. • You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those little sips add up fast. • You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like. • Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will!
56 0423 WCTM.indd 56
VISIT CALIFORNIA/DAVID COLLIER
• Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)? • Ask questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help. • Don’t feel pressured to buy a bottle or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bottle). • Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting). • Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and best not to wear white! • Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit. • Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries. • Eat breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine. • Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a baguette, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery • Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day. • If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being. • Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them. • Enjoy yourself! BY DONALD SONDERLING
