Bennett Lane Winery A Favorite Stop for Succulent Cabernets and More
A
s the warmth of summer days roll into Napa Valley, a foolproof way to make the most of the season is a day spent at Bennett Lane Winery in Calistoga. One of our favorite stops, Bennett Lane is known for its succulent Cabernets, their signature “feasting wine,” Maximus, and for one of the best visitor experiences in the valley. Founded by Randy and Lisa Lynch in 2003, Bennett Lane’s off-the-beaten-track location and friendly tasting room offers a “secret gem” to Napa visitors and a great way to learn about – and try – some of Napa’s best wines in a more intimate setting. Bennett Lane’s Cabs have continuously garnered critical acclaim. In the short period that the winery has been open they have received an incredible 67 scores of 90+ points between Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Year after year, the popular blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah has won accolades from critics and visitors alike. The “red feasting wine,” as Maximus is affectionately referred to on the label, demonstrates owners Randy and Lisa Lynch’s commitment to making wine an integral part of entertaining with family and friends. The current vintage of 2015 is available in the tasting room at $50 per bottle. Bennett Lane’s wines are crafted to be approachable, yet complex – or what owner Randy Lynch calls “the best of both worlds, meaning you can drink them today, but they are structured enough to cellar for several years. My goal is for us to make consistent wines – both in quality and taste – from year to year, so that consumers can trust Bennett Lane wines,” he says. Bennett Lane begins tastings in their beautiful garden, the
14
Bennett Lane is known for its succulent Cabernets and for one of the best visitor experiences in the valley. perfect setting for wine and social distancing. This includes four of Bennett Lane’s wines: 2021 Reserve Chardonnay, 2015 Maximus Red Feasting Wine, 2016 Syrah, and 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon. In this intimate and relaxed setting (a bit like having a personal wine steward), there will be plenty of time for tasting and exploring each wine in depth. Moving at a leisurely pace, the personal wine expert will share the full story on each bottling and answer any questions regarding winemaking, fruit sourcing, cellaring and more. Priced at $25 per person, it’s a classic example of the intimate hospitality that Bennett Lane is known for – comfortable, relaxed, informative and above all, friendly. On that perfect summer day, be sure and ask about their elusive White Maximus, and Rosé wines, available exclusively at the winery. These two small bottlings (less than 300 cases) are not available on the tasting flight, and sell out in a matter of weeks after release. The White Maximus is the perfect white blend for summer, with 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 9% Chardonnay, and 1% Muscat. This aromatic white is the perfect antidote to the summer heat. The newest addition for summer is the Rosé. Be sure to catch this limited release, made from Petite Sirah grapes in neighboring Knight’s Valley. Cabernet enthusiasts can upgrade to their Reserve Tasting Flight for $45, and get a chance to try three of the wineries top-tier Cabernets, including the Lynch Family Vineyard Calistoga Cabernet with less than 100 cases produced. Be sure to put Bennett Lane on your short-list of must-visit tasting rooms as the production is small and the Cabernets sell out quickly. Visiting Bennett Lane affords tasters another rarity with a small winery – a likely run-in (and perhaps a last minute barrel tasting if you’re lucky!) with owners Randy and Lisa Lynch. Bennett Lane Winery is located in an understated Mediterranean-style building at the secluded and beautiful northern end of Napa Valley, and is well worth the drive. Open daily, by reservation, 10am-5:30pm 3340 CA-128, Calistoga (707) 942-6684 • www.bennettlane.com

JIM SULLIVAN
Enter a Medieval World of Modern Wine Hospitality
Castello di Amorosa Dario Sattui has created an authentically designed 14th century Tuscan castle in the heart of Napa Valley, where you feel like royalty as you tour, sit, and sip the Castello’s wine selection. Dario’s great-grandfather, Vittorio Sattui, founded the original V. Sattui Winery in San Francisco in 1885 (which later closed due to Prohibition). To honor his family, Dario built V. Sattui Winery in St. Helena during the 1970s, but this was only the beginning of Dario’s dream and commitment to recognize his family and heritage. Spending years travelling to Italy, taking notes, making sketches, taking photographs, and talking to historical and architectural experts, Dario envisioned building an authentic Tuscan castle, which was to be an homage to his Italian heritage. But more than that, it was to be a place for wine lovers to come and experience the greatness of award-winning Italianstyle wines, (only available through the Castello), while being surrounded by a recreated history. As you approach and enter the Castello, your breath will be taken away, mesmerized by the grand detail and the enormity of this fifteen-year building project. Medieval watch towers, ramparts, a moat, drawbridge, battlements and so much more, that it takes many trips to absorb it all. As mesmerizing as the castle is, with antique bricks imported from Europe, and expert fabrication where necessary, completed by skilled craftsmen in period reconstruction, you will be gratified by their wines and gracious hospitality. 16
The Wine Tasting Experience Tasting the wines of the Castello is a notable experience. The wines are hand crafted by Brooks Painter, Director of Winemaking, Peter Velleno, Winemaker, and their team. The result is a selection of elegant Italian-style wines that can only be enjoyed at Castello di Amorosa. These wines consistently receive the highest ratings and accolades from the likes of
WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH
Wine Enthusiast Magazine, Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck, SF International Wine Competition, James Suckling and other well regarded wine reviewers, being awarded scores reaching into the high 90s, plus multiple double gold medals at the SF International Wine Competition. During your tasting you will be able to choose six wines from the current tasting menu (so if you are a couple, feel free to each choose different wines to share). As varied as the large selection of wines is to choose from, there is also a variety of tasting options, from seated to standing, outside on the large courtyard in addition to different areas of the castle where you may enjoy a tasting. Some tasting options include tours of the castle (including the prison and torture chamber). You may also explore on your own with a self-guided map. During your tasting, you will find out that not only is Dario committed to constructing a castle true to historical standards, while producing world-class wines, but that the wines produced would be done in such a way as to also protect and honor the land. The grape growing standard is to use sustainable farming practices, reducing the carbon footprint, protecting the land while encouraging the balance of nature and the earth in all ways possible.
The Quest, just released on Disney+, was filmed at Castello di Amorosa! Grab your popcorn & Spumante and watch as eight teenagers embark to a world of fantasy.
Come for a Visit - Then Come Again The first time you visit the Castello di Amorosa you will say wow! And then, you will be planning your return. There is so much to drink in, so much beauty, history, and of course the wines, that you will need to come again (and again) to continue your adventure. This destination wine adventure in Napa Valley is truly one of a kind. Enjoy the romance of a unique, realistic 14th Century Italian Castle, while savoring highly rated wines that are only available at the Castello. Salute! New Wine Release Recommendations
by Melissa Vogt
Jordan Vineyards & Winery 2018 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, $60 This is a true Le Bank Bordeaux-style red comprised of predominantly 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 11% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, and 2% Malbec. The wine has a seductive aromatic profile with black cherry and baking chocolate mixes with hints of vanilla and clove. On the palate, this Cabernet showcases the balance of its aging in 100% French oak for 13 months — between 35% new and 65% one-year-old barrels. It has a gentle, toasty oak profile with notes of vanilla that accentuate the wine, rather than overpower it. This wine will undoubtedly show its true character with time in the cellar.
Sonoma Cutrer 2021 Rosé of Pinot Noir, $25 Rosé and spring are a dynamic duo and Sonoma Cutrer’s new pink release should be at the top of everyone’s spring wine list. This bo le is a steal at this price point and offers juicy flavors of strawberry and kiwi, with lime on the lengthy finish. The palate is bright, fresh, and full of verve. It’s well made and a beautiful expression of Rosé of Pinot Noir.
Knights Bridge Winery 2020 East Block Chardonnay, $75 This new release from Knights Bridge Winery is a powerhouse of a Chardonnay that’s going to be a favorite by all who love the richer style that sees malolactic fermentation. It’s got notes of bu erscotch and Meyer lemon, with a stone-like characteristic that shines through. The acidity is gentle and mellowed by the full-bodied texture and brioche quality that plays a prominent role.
Arrow & Branch 2021 Sauvignon Blanc, $42 This Atlas Peak Sauvignon Blanc from Arrow & Branch is lovely. Hailing from the renowned Stagecoach Vineyard, it shows ripe notes of stone fruit and candied orange, with a fine line of minerality carried throughout. It’s full-bodied and round on the palate with mouthwatering acidity and juiciness — everything one wants in a classic Sauvignon Blanc.

Crazy? Courageous? Or Both? Terry Letson Opens Three New Restaurants in Less than Two Years By Jody Purdom
O
pening any restaurant is surely a labor of love. Opening one – let alone three – during a global pandemic is ... choose one: A) Slightly nutty; B) A monumental undertaking; C) Not for the faint of heart; D) All of the above. Letter D is the obvious answer and the man who fits the bill is none other than restaurateur, Terry Letson. The proprietor of north Napa’s very successful and extremely popular Fumé Bistro since 2002, Terry has toiled long and hard to bring three thriving new restaurants into existence since “inking the deal” in November 2019. The first two restaurants, Sunshine Café and North Spirits and Tapas are side-by-side cousins, both located at 1540 Trancas Street. Terry’s third venture, newcomer Petit Soleil, is a downtown haven that opened in July of 2021. A frequent visitor to the Napa Valley, Letson made the official leap some 25 years ago from his native Southern California. There, after culinary school and a with background in food chemistry, Letson cut his teeth in the heyday of Wolfgang Puck’s Los Angeles food scene, finding his own unique style with both wine and food. Fed up (his words) with the smog and vibe in L.A., Letson describes an “aha” moment that led him to make Napa his permanent home in 1989. A couple restaurant jobs later – Giovanni’s and Chandon among them – he summed his courage, hanging out his own shingle with the now neighborhood favorite, Fumé Bistro. Twenty-some years later, he’s capitalized on
20
that singular success, expanding to open three new restaurants in the span of just a couple years, pandemic notwithstanding. Sunshine Café came first. Instantly famous for its thick and delicious milkshakes, the Café serves breakfast and lunch every day of the week. Think local, farm fresh, seasonal and sustainable food dished up in a cheery dineresque atmosphere that recently added a supper offering, served Tuesday through Saturday from 4 to 9 PM. By contrast, North Spirits and Tapas is open Tuesday-Saturday at 3 p.m. and is quickly becoming the new, go-to hotspot for inventive cocktails, craft beers, local wines and globally inspired small plates. Imagine your neighborhood “Cheers.” Sunshine Café and North Spirits and Tapas share two sides of one building, using the same kitchen and customer bathrooms. This has helped keep costs in check while providing two unique experiences for customers: breakfast on one side; booze on the other, according to Letson. However, reaching these milestones has been no small chore. “Getting these two restaurants off the ground – followed shortly after by Petit Soleil – took a year longer than anticipated,” said Letson. “The pandemic-related shut down sucker-punched us, but we took it in stride and just kept working until we pulled it off.” With his solid SoCal track record in creating and growing successful restaurants and wine establishments, Letson is no stranger to the industry. But all things WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH
“The pandemic-related shut down sucker-punched us, but we took it in stride and just kept working until we pulled it off.” – TERRY LETSON
pandemic – including permitting delays, a severe lack of building materials, and eventually, a staff shortage – dogged him every step of the way. Luckily, his past success and reputation kept supporters and backers invested in the projects. “Our timing could not have been worse but who on earth anticipates a global shut-down?” said Letson. “If there was a delay or price increase, we were sure to feel it somewhere. From lumber to fabric for our booths to everything in between, it was just one thing after another.” Finally, Letson and team prevailed, opening Sunshine Café in August of 2021 and North Spirits and Tapas in November of that same year. Both have been an almost instant hit with locals and visitors alike. As for Petit Soleil, an impossible-to-pass-up spot in downtown Napa became available in 2021. The space needed extensive renovations to turn it into a restaurant but, undeterred, Letson signed the lease and began the remodeling process. Many of the same problems haunted this project but, like a well-seasoned hamburger, Letson forged on, putting one foot in front of the other until opening day in February 2022. Today, Petit Soleil is a busy neighborhood nook bursting with positive energy. Much like Sunshine Café, the space is open and bright, festooned with colorful paintings and a cheerful vibe. Serving breakfast and lunch with an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients, Petit Soleil is as fantastic as its name. “It’s been a longer road than we anticipated but, success breeds success and we are now riding the wave,” said Letson. “The restaurants became busy quickly. After a lot of searching, we’ve got amazing staff in each location. We encourage everyone to come and experience what we’re about.” Sign up for our email newsletter at WineCountryThisMonth.com

Traveling the world by glass has never been this easy. Through this legendary collection of wines, the New Frontier Wine Co. invites you to explore its global vineyards. T
Napa’s New Frontier By Laura Ness
his is not your typical tasting room. It’s more like a library, where you can delve into topics that interest you and learn a few things you might not have anticipated. The tasting menu is a universal itinerary of winedom assembled by one of the most successful men in the world, Alejandro Bulgheroni, an Argentinian-Italian businessman, farmer, vintner, and entrepreneur. His discerning nose and taste for the finest pieces of winegrowing dirt in the world, led him to assemble an unmatched portfolio of wine wonders, from Italy to Australia to Napa to South America. Impossibly, he also built winery at the very bottom tip of Patagonia, where sheep and mountain goats thrive, but where one would not think to plant vines, unless you were Bulgheroni. Located in downtown Napa, New Frontier is literally a passport to wines from the far reaches of the earth. You can try everything from French Bordeaux to Argentinian Organic Malbec to Australian Grenache. Guided by the welcoming, knowledgeable Somm and hospitality professional, Chris Cardoso, you’ll be in good hands as you embark on your world tour.
22
Start with the 2020 Waypoint Old Vine Muscat from Bell Road Vineyard in Amador, a dry deliverance of perfume and orange peel, followed by the voluptuously smooth, yet spicy pomegranate and brownie-packed 2019 Grandpère Zinfandel from Amador. Both are crafted by winemaker Joe Shebl, who made Renwood’s little wren on the label sing its sweetest songs. Chase the 2020 Pursuit Sauvignon Blanc from Napa Valley, if you must, but don’t pass up the organic 2020 Devoción Malbec from Argentina, a brilliant ruby-hued, red plum endowed beauty, made by winemaker Juan Pablo Murgia, whose lush litheness will blow your mind but not your budget at only $25. Devoción also makes a dynamite organic Cabernet Franc. Murgia is now head winemaker for the Otronia wines from Patagonia, which include Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, grown at the southernmost vineyard in the world, on the 45th parallel. This distinction used to be held by Central Otago, New Zealand, but the Argentinians pushed the limits southward. Nothing can prepare you for the sublime WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH
experience of the Alkina wines, from Barossa, Australia, crafted by winemakers Amelia Nolan and Alberto Antonini. Named for an Indigenous Australian girl’s name for Moon, the wines are indeed heavenly. Tasting the 2019 Alkina Polygon No. 3 Grenache was like lying on the floor of the Sistine Chapel, admiring the ceiling. This wine literally levitates in your mouth, each angelic wave taking you closer to heaven. One can understand why $295 is a fair price for such an experience. Lovers of Napa Cabernets in all their bold glory, will appreciate the lineup from Lithology, named for the study of rocks, handsomely polished by two of Napa’s legends, Philippe Melka and Matt Sands. Drill down on the supreme Beckstoffer vineyards, including To-Kalon, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane, Beckstoffer Las Piedras and Beckstoffer Georges III. The 2019 Las Piedras dances a minuet of deep plum and chocolate, with a lovely core of ginger cookie, while the Dr. Crane delivers huckleberry, mint and cedar, an edgy wine with a full on amazing shantung silkiness that finds every part of your mouth. As expected, the To-Kalon is dark and gravelly, with a sweetish edge that combines pepper and dark cherry in a fascinating jam of velvet and fire. All impressive. You might want to finish with the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Alejandro Bulgheroni, from Oakville, St. Helena and Rutherford vineyards. Much like the man himself, it’s bold, grippy, spicy, daring, earthy and captivating. Never has a $395 Napa Cab made me crave meatballs quite like this one. With selections from $20 to $400, the depth and breadth of this sumptuous feast are impossible to beat, offering something new each time you visit. Each taste is served in the finest Sophienwald Austrian crystal stemware, to show off the inner truth of each wine.
A synthesis of innovation & tradition. By merging innovators and artisans, along with the traditions of Napa Valley's finest terroirs, New Frontier Wine Co. strives to craft a collection of luxury wines that offers the perfect bottle at every price point.

Rosé Three Ways by Anna Maria Giambanco DiPietro
I
There’s just something inherently relaxing about the idea of rosé. The word itself conjures images of seaside strolls, grilled seafood, and vacation vibes.
t’s easy to sip, easy to pair, and easy to shop for, as most domestic rosé is simply labeled “rosé.” It’s even become a grab-and-go item available in cans, boxes, and bottles with corks, pop-tops and screw-caps. The perfect libation for picnics, cookouts, lunch dates and beachfront sipping in jaunty hats, rosé is here to stay. Long gone are the days when sweet, sticky rosé made from Zinfandel dominated the pink wine sector. These days, dry, elegant rosé is made across the globe using a myriad of varietals and winemaking techniques. From blending whites and reds to saignée, where a small portion of the wine is removed after a few hours of maceration, the sky’s the limit for vintners when it comes to producing rosé, and wine consumers are drinking it all up, literally. Recently, I was fortunate enough to catch up with Karen MacNeil, author of the awardwinning book, THE WINE BIBLE, about the world of rosé and how this magical pink-hued elixir has secured its footing at the forefront of the wine scene. Here’s how she weighed in:
AM: Do you have any suggestions for a starter rosé? I'm thinking of diehard, dry red wine drinkers who’d usually run the other way when offered a glass containing pink wine. KMN: The beauty of rosé is that it’s so easy. It’s a wine for drinking, not thinking. So wine lovers can “start” anywhere. That said, I am especially fond of Provençal rosé because Provence is the “mother ship” when it comes to rosé and also because Provençal rosé is bone-dry and crisp, and therefore terrific with just about every food. AM: Any basic advice for pairing rosé? KMN: Pairing with rosé is also easy. Just imagine any dish that has a southern French “spin,” and you are set. Also, a little-known fact: rosé is one of the few wines that goes really well with garlic, which is why the French drink it with aioli and bouillabaisse. AM: What was the first rosé that left an impression on you? KMN: The rosés that I first got to know were either from southern France or Spain. (Spain, in fact, makes loads of excellent rosé for a song). The other rosés I LOVE are rosé Champagnes. Expensive but sensational. Marc Hebrart is a favorite producer. Rosé Champagne with roast chicken (or any poultry) can’t be beat.

AM: Where might vintners in California look for inspiration when it comes to producing excellent rosé? KMN: California winemakers often want to make rosé out of grapes that, in my opinion, are too tannic. A rosé of Cabernet or Merlot can come off as too coarse. Rosés made from Mediterranean varieties — Grenache, Carignan, and Cinsaut, often work better. You can read more of MacNeil’s thoughts on rosé and other wines at WineSpeed.com. In the interim, here are three of my top picks for amazing rosé along with three recipes for a bit of fun in the kitchen. I hope you’ll enjoy tasting, pairing, and perhaps even learning a bit as you go. Whether you’re serving burrata, crabmeat, grilled sausages, poultry, or prosciutto, rosé loves food. As a matter of fact, Julia Child said, “Rosé can be served with anything.” I’ll not disagree. Put on some music, open a bottle or two, and enjoy the simple pleasures of sipping and prepping a palate-pleasing repast. Saluté!

Frank Family Vineyards Cooks Up Father’s Day Fun
Two incredible culinary forces teaming up to create the ultimate live fire BBQ experience Napa Valley’s iconic Frank Family Vineyards will host a tong-flipping, finger-licking live fire barbecue dinner with Backyard Pitmaster Jack Arnold and celebrity Chef Christina Machamer on June 17 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. BBQ Specialist Arnold will fire up the main course on the Big Green Egg, while Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen season four winner Chef Machamer will prepare elevated comfort-food-style appetizers, side dishes and dessert. The meal, hosted by Founders Rich and Leslie Frank and Winemaker Todd Graff on the Frank Family Member’s Lawn, will be paired with Frank Family Cabernets, Zinfandel, and more. This lively dinner will allow each guest an opportunity to experience larger-than-life grilling demonstrations and musical entertainment in a stunning vineyardside setting. Tickets are $350 per person and can be purchased here. “My father, Hy Frank a World War II veteran and our family patriarch, was a wholesale meatpacker in Brooklyn and provided for me to be the first person in our family to attend University. He instilled a love of grilling in me, and so it has always been a part of the Frank Family culture,” says Founder Rich Frank. “We remember my father with our exclusive Patriarch Cabernet Sauvignon and will definitely be raising a glass as we celebrate Father’s Day weekend with such esteemed chefs.” Arnold is one of the most highly rated BBQ specialists and backyard pitmasters in the country and Machamer rose to prominence after winning season four of FOX’s Hell’s Kitchen where she was awarded the position of executive sous chef at Restaurant Gordan Ramsay and worked sideby-side with Ramsay himself. The two will be presenting a stellar menu with a main course 28
consisting of Kow Steaks American Wagyu filet, Southside Market & Barbecue jalapeño cheddar smoked sausage and Golden Steer Maine lobster tail. The fun continues throughout the weekend at the newly opened Four Season’s Napa Valley TRUSS Restaurant + Bar where Arnold will be hosting additional Father’s Day events on June 18 and 19. Frank Family Vineyards will serve as the official winery partner, pouring their 2020 Carneros Chardonnay, 2018 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2016 Brut Rosé sparkling wine. For more information about the Four Seasons Napa Valley Father’s Day celebration, go to www.fourseasons.com. Frank Family Vineyards was founded in 1992. Through tireless work, focus and engagement with trade and consumers alike, founder Rich Frank, former President of Disney Studios, along with his wife Leslie, a former Emmy-award winning broadcast news journalist, gradually built the winery over the years, making it one of today’s most successful California wineries. Winemaker and General Manager Todd Graff has been crafting Frank Family’s wines since 2003. First constructed as the Historic Larkmead Winery in 1884, the stone building on Frank Family’s property is the third oldest in the Napa Valley and appears on the National Register of Historical Places. Today, Frank Family Vineyards sources from 380 acres of estate vineyards in the Napa Valley. Frank Family's Carneros Chardonnay ($38), Carneros Pinot Noir ($38), Napa Valley Zinfandel ($38) and Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($58) are distributed nationally. Wine Tasting
Helpful Tips
Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect. Additionally, Covid-19 has made it necessary for some changes and adaptations. Following the guidelines and etique e tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine country. Due to Covid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go: • Plan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be reserved. • Understand that there may be a time limit • Ask about the different tasting experiences and costs. • If you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person. • If this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly. • Be sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.) • Be flexible • Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart. • Don’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine. “Good wine” is what you like. Period. • You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those li le sips add up fast. • You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like. • Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will! • Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)?

★ BREATHLESS WINES Celebrate your breathless moments with award-winning sparkling wine! • Sparkling & Still Wines • Cheese & Charcuterie • Caviar Picnic • Sabrage Experience 707 395-7300, 499 Moore Ln, Healdsburg
★ CLINE CELLARS • Ask questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help. • Don’t feel pressured to buy a bo le or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bo le). • Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting). • Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and try not to wear white! • Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit. • Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries. • Eat breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine. • Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a bague e, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery • Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day. • If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being. • Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them. • Enjoy yourself! Be respectful of all conditions and procedures. Wineries have had challenges to adjust their normal procedures due to Covid-19. Everything they do is to insure your safety, pleasure and that you have a great time. Covid-19 has had many positive effects for wine tasting: More intimate, less crowded, more time to really talk to your winery host. With this is mind ... let’s go tasting and BY DONALD SONDERLING have fun! (It’s prudent to double check your planned visit, if possible, the day of your visit.)
