Frank Family’s Leslie Rosé N
YOUR ONE-WAY TICKET TO SUMMER
14
apa Valley’s iconic Frank Family Vineyards has a profound passion for Pinot Noir, which they have grown and sourced to craft still and sparkling wines for the past three decades. Now, they continue their exploration of this beloved grape with a crisp, light, and elegant wine, deservedly named, Leslie Rosé. Now in its second vintage, the Leslie Rosé is a touching tribute to former newscaster and Frank Family Co-Founder, Leslie Frank. Inspired by her love for Provençal rosé, this beautiful wine was a passion project for Frank, who wanted something she could sip in the summertime but held up to the Frank Family name as a world-class producer. Rosé is a wine that brings joy to people. It has an undeniable power to transcend you to summertime, to time with friends, and to your favorite holiday destination. “For me, as I sip this wine, I’m reminded of some of my favorite travels,” says Frank. “Its lovely rose gold shade captures the essence of summer sunsets in Napa Valley and conjures memories of sun-kissed terraces in Bandol, France.” From its beautiful hue to its refreshing acidity and lavish layers of strawberry, white peach, and orange blossom, it offers a brilliant expression of Carneros rosé that is the perfect package of pure quenchability. It’s a wine that is both serious yet whimsical – and that’s its charm.

RICH AND LESLIE FRANK
YEARS IN THE MAKING Behind the scenes, Frank Family’s Cellar Master, Armando Padilla has been experimenting with still rosé production for many years, even bottling several cases exclusively for employee and family enjoyment. When Leslie first tasted and fell in love with Armando’s rosé, she wanted to take it up a notch and bring Winemaker Todd Graff into the mix to create something special just for Frank Family members and friends. With her gentle nudge, Frank Family started to intentionally cultivate and vinify Pinot Noir for the purpose of making rosé from the start. “Pinot Noir is one of my favorite grapes to work with,” says Graff. “It’s not exactly easy to grow and it can be challenging to make, which is part of its appeal for me as a winemaker.” The grape grows so beautifully in Napa’s Carneros region which is why it comes as no surprise that Carneros Pinot Noir is capable of also producing gorgeous rosés, demonstrated by Frank Family’s newest bottling.
VINEYARD SOURCING & WINEMAKING The Leslie Rosé is sourced exclusively from parcels of the best vineyards in Napa’s acclaimed Carneros region, including Frank Family’s estate Lewis Vineyard located along the shores of the San Pablo Bay. The cooling influences of the Bay as well as the nearby Pacific Ocean allow for delicate maturation of the grapes and retention of bright flavors. This wine was crafted with Pinot Noir grapes that were grown specifically to showcase the attributes we desire most in rosé – fresh aromatics, vibrant flavors, and natural acidity. Picked in the chill of the night, the grapes were brought to the winery and immediately pressed while the fruit was still cool to maintain its fruitSign up for our email newsletter at WineCountryThisMonth.com
forward profile and to achieve its perfect light hue. Fermentation took place entirely in stainless steel tanks, preserving its fresh acidity and delicate aromas before bottling just a few hundred cases earlier this spring.
ROSÉ SOIRÉE The Leslie Rosé quickly developed a devoted following in 2020, selling out within just two months of its inaugural release. To celebrate the highly anticipated return of Leslie Frank’s namesake wine this spring, she hosted a soirée at the winery as sophisticated and exclusive as the wine itself. The first annual Leslie Rosé Soirée took place on the estate lawn at Frank Family’s Calistoga-based winery and featured endless sips of rosé plus a selection of sparkling and still wines all paired with a delightful spring-inspired menu curated by celebrity Chef Christina Machamer. The fête also showcased handcrafted wine cocktails like the “April Showers” and “Carneros Dove”, both created by Frank Family’s Director of Hospitality and bartender extraordinaire, Liam Gearity. To cap off the event, the Frank Family team ecstatically revealed their plans to launch a new hospitality space at the winery which they hope to open to the public in fall 2022. The Leslie Rosé is available for purchase at the winery or at their online wine shop. Due to the limited nature of this small-batch wine, allocations are limited to six bottles.

hen you need a wine tasting experience that keeps things deliciously simple, think basics: like bread and butter basics. Life is already too complicated. Does wine have to be as well? The answer is no. Introducing Bread & Butter, and their new tasting room on the Silverado Trail, where award-winning winemaker, Linda Trotta, crafts limited-release Napa Valley wines made to be … delicious, honest, and uncomplicated. It’s an oasis for those looking to have a good time without pretense, judgment or ritual. Shouldn’t wine just be fun?
Bread & Butter wines stem from the belief that a good wine is a wine you like. While some wines are purposefully built for deep introspection, like a tome on existential philosophy, Bread & Butter wines are more like summer beach reading. That’s a guilty pleasure most of us can sign up for, gladly. When you visit the relaxed and serene Bread & Butter wine tasting room designed by C. Walters Design of San Francisco, famous for blending cozy comfort with effortless style, you’ll switch instantly to vacation mode. Sit at the sleek bar, at a cozy table in one of several small private rooms, or camp outside on the deck, overlooking the vineyards. It’s up to you. It’s an oasis for those looking to have a good time without pretense, judgement or ritual. Shouldn’t wine just be fun? Whether you decide to sip on the bold and fruity 2018 Napa Valley Red Blend that combines berry ripe Cabernet Sauvignon with the smooth operator, Petite Sirah, or the binge-worthy 2018 Napa Valley Merlot, with its plush tannins and captivating fruit, Bread & Butter wines are created for pure, uncluttered enjoyment.

All Bread & Butter Napa Valley wines are made in limited quantities, at crazy good prices and available only at the Silverado Trail tasting room. When you’re looking to avoid the chaos of too many expensive and stress-inducing choices, start with a visit to Bread & Butter. Take home your favorites and whenever you need to return to the simple pleasures in life, just open a bottle and pour.o Find the Bread & Butter Tasting Room at 3105 Silverado Trail, Napa, open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For reservations, call 833-332-7323.
THE WINES The 2019 Bread & Butter Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc is from a vineyard site in St. Helena near the Napa River. The wine is pale to medium gold in color, and displays aromas of fresh cut grass, hints of honeysuckle and citrus blossom. Flavors include pear, apple and minerality, with a supple texture and a bright finish that is not tart. The 2019 Bread & Butter Napa Valley Chardonnay goes through full malolactic fermentation and is aged in some new French oak. Medium golden in color, offers aromas of honeycomb, butter, crème brulée, baked apple and dried hay. Offers plenty of layers on the palate including flavors of Golden Delicious apple, mango and a lingering vanilla sweetness on the finish.

The 2019 Bread & Butter Carneros District Pinot Noir is medium ruby in color, offering darker aromatics, including cherry and various berry fruits along with a hint of raspberry jam and chocolate. Very balanced and rounded across the palate with finer grained, darker tannins, it delivers flavors of red cherry and plum. The 2018 Bread & Butter Napa Valley Petite Sirah is dark ruby with purplish tinges on the rim; the bouquet is all about dark fruits, including boysenberry and blackberry, along with cedar incense. Flavors, including dark cherry and plum, are complemented by juicy mouthwatering acidity. Sometimes the texture of 100% Petite Sirah wines dominates the finish: not so with this wine. Rather, while there is a noticeable density of tannins, they are well integrated, with a dusty, gravelly texture. The 2018 Bread & Butter Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Wine Spectator, 91pts) is from fruit sourced from the valley floor in Rutherford as well as hillsides on both Atlas Peak and Howell Mountain. Dark ruby in color, its varietal character is immediately obvious, unlike the riper offerings so commonly crafted from this variety in the Napa Valley. Aromas of fine cigar wrapper, leather and darker fruits including plum and cherry, are complemented by savory notes. Juicy on the palate, the wine has a touch of savoriness on the finish with some darker spice notes and cedar. The tannins are light, still a bit tight but are fairly integrated.

New Wine Release Recommendations

Fire up the grill and grab these BBQ-friendly wines all summer long. St. Francis Winery & Vineyards 2018 Bacchi Vineyard Zinfandel, $52 This is a beautiful expression of cool-climate Zinfandel from Russian River Valley that shows a lot of balance and elegance. Spiced red cherries and cedar abound on the nose. The palate is true to the nose with loads of baking spice and red cherry fruit, with pleasant, wooded notes of forest floor and cedar on the finish. It’s smooth and medium bodied in a more restrained and elegant style for Zinfandel, which makes it perfect for versatile food pairings on the grill this summer.
Rombauer Vineyards 2019 Zinfandel, $35 Another great bo le for the price point, the Rombauer 2019 Zinfandel has lovely aromas of red cherry, vanilla, and baking chocolate. It’s a jammy expression on the palate with ripe raspberry and cherry pie-like flavors, with so tannins and a long finish. It’s well-priced and a great go-to for weekend grilling.
Alexander Valley Vineyards 2018 AVV Old Vine Zinfandel, $20 This is a wine where the quality to price is outstanding. For $20, it doesn’t get much be er than this classic Old Vine Zinfandel with its dark, spice-filled aromas of black cherry, ripe raspberry, and black pepper. On the palate, dark chocolate combines with the black fruit and spiced Christmas cake notes. The dark fruit and bold flavors make this an excellent match for barbeque-sauced meats.
Robert Mondavi Winery 2018 The Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon To Kalon Vineyard, $225 This Reserve Cabernet from the To Kalon Vineyard is a powerhouse of a wine and demands a perfectly grilled steak served alongside it. It’s got a complex bouquet with notes of blackberry, violet, and sweet tobacco leaf. The palate shows dark notes of blackberry and black cherry, with flavors of eucalyptus. It’s full-bodied with grippy tannins that pair exceptionally well with steak. While the palate is noticeably young — the To Kalon Vineyard is known for its ability to age so pick up a bo le for now and one for the cellar—it’s showing well in its youth. 18

Priest Ranch 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, $55
Wander + Ivy 2020 Rosé The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon from Priest Ranch is an excellent choice for grill-seared steaks this summer. Black cherry cola aromas on the nose give way to a silky mouthfeel with refined tannins. For a Cabernet, this wine has noticeable freshness, even in its full-bodied style. Notes of baking spice and vanilla add complexity and balance to this steakfriendly wine.
These classy single-serve glass bo les of wine are lovely. While each bo le drinks well, the Rosé is a great fit for hot summer days on the beach. The Rosé comes from organically farmed French grapes and is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, and 10% Syrah. It’s made in a light and refreshing style with good acidity and flavors of apple, strawberry, and rose petals. It’s the perfect size for daytime libations.

V. SATTUI WINERY
T he American Dream From Generation to Generation By Don Sonderling
B
etween 1880 and 1924 more than four million Italians .immigrated to the United States to begin a new life. Among those were Vittorio Sattui and his wife, settling in San Francisco in 1882. In 1885 Vittorio started making wine, and his fledgling company was then known as St. Helena Cellars. The winery would flourish for thirty-five years, until Prohibition forced the company to close its doors. Then, fifty-six years later, in 1976, Dario Sattui, Vittorio’s great-grandson, would open V. Sattui Winery in Napa, California, as an homage to Vittorio. V. Sattui Winery has been a Napa mainstay ever since, welcoming visitors with Italian hospitality and wine. Even COVID-19 would not stop this generational Napa icon from making visitors feel at home and welcome (even if virtually for a while), drinking good wines, eating mouthwatering food, and offering a relaxing, convivial retreat, even an escape, from the world’s stress and unknowns.
The V. Sattui Experience-pre and post Covid Following my first visit to V. Sattui winery sometime in the ’80s, the winery became a must stop destination for my wife and I. Back then, we would stand at the bar drinking (it wasn’t “tasting” for us at that point), and then, always followed by having a picnic lunch with meats and cheeses from the Italian deli. The tastings protocol may have changed over the last few years, but the hospitality, fine food and wine keeps getting better. Gone are the party busses, the bellying up to the bar standing shoulder to shoulder tastings. Covid compelled business everywhere to re-define their operating models, wineries were no exception. For a while the winery was closed, therefore virtual events and tastings via Zoom became the standard. As wineries re-opened, consumers were greeted with new, more personalized, and individualized, elevated, and hosted tasting experiences. There were less crowds, with the same warm, welcoming Sattui family graciousness. Continued next page Sign up for our email newsletter at WineCountryThisMonth.com

The menu changes every two months to stay in step with the latest offerings from the estate’s culinary garden. Available Thursday–Monday, reservations are required ($95pp)
Enjoy the newest tasting experience highlighting Medlock Ames Bell Mountain Vineyard wines paired with culinary delights from SingleThread, Sonoma County’s first 3 Michelin Star restaurant. The Wine Pairing Lunch with SingleThread is a limited offering, available for parties of 2-6 on select dates through the end of the year. The 90-minute seated experience will take place in the Olive Grove and will include a SingleThread chef-curated "bento box" with each item artfully paired to our organically-farmed wines. Reservations are required and are only available on the following dates: on Saturdays, June 18, July 9, August 27, September 24 and Sundays October 23 or November 13. Book your reservation as soon as possible as this experience is sure to sell out. Email info@medlockames.com or call 707-431-8845.
THE ESSENTIALS PICNIC | in a customized red wagon A beautifully prepared picnic lunch and enjoy a true wine country experience with exceptional wines, extraordinary foods, and quiet moments on endless vistas. Guests can explore the estate and find a relaxing spot to enjoy their alfresco lunch — on the Pavilion lawn, under the trellis by the pond, or at the picnic tables in the rose gardens. A Great Hometown Diner After opening and running north Napa’s popular and successful Fumé Bistro for the past 20 years, restauranteur, Terry Letson, set some big goals for himself – opening not one but three new restaurants in a short span of time. Slowed considerably by pandemic-related delays, Letson nonetheless persevered and the first of the three, Sunshine Café, opened in August 2021, becoming an instant hit with locals and visitors alike. “Almost immediately, Sunshine Café was famous for its milkshakes,” said Letson. “The food was a quick second and now we’ve got loyal fans who come from all over the valley to join us for a meal.” The bright space is eclectic and fun with colorful paintings of food splashed across the walls and comfy booths perfect for an intimate dining experience. In addition to its famous milkshakes, Sunshine Café serves breakfast, an all-day brunch, as well as lunch. “Supper” has also just added to the repertoire. Located on bustling Trancas Avenue, Sunshine’s location is a perfect stopping-off spot for locals as they navigate errands, kid’s sports, or shopping. For visitors, the location is central to wineries in the surrounding area and makes a tasty start to a planned day of wine tasting. With menu items that range from eggs to pancakes and everything in between, plus a full bar to wet your whistle, Sunshine Café has something for everyone. Nods to the beautiful Napa Valley and the greater Bay Area are evident throughout the menu and the restaurant works with local bakers, farmers, and gardeners to bring the freshest local ingredients into the kitchen each day.
34
Two examples include the “Not Your Everyday Avocado Toast” which pairs Panorama wheat bread with Laura Chenel goat cheese, avocado, eggs, and a cherry tomato-shallot relish; and in the BAS (short for Big A** Salad) department, the “Willy Bird Cobb Salad” features Willy’s own turkey atop local greens, with bacon, blue cheese, and a farm fresh egg, all tossed in a delicious vinaigrette. Despite those pesky Covid-related staffing shortages, Sunshine now has a full staff of like-minded teammates who work hard to provide amazing food and great service in a relaxed atmosphere. Letson’s early success with Fumé Bistro has bred further success with Sunshine Café and his two other recentlyopened restaurants, Sunshine’s next door neighbor, North Spirits and Tapas, and downtown Napa’s Petit Soleil. “Sunshine Café is a great hometown diner,” said Letson. “Breakfast and lunch are always fresh and delicious. And our new supper offerings include hearty dishes like meatloaf, organic chicken pot pie, and more. Something for everyone By Jody Purdom in a fun environment.”

Wine Tasting
Helpful Tips
Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect. Additionally, Covid-19 has made it necessary for some changes and adaptations. Following the guidelines and etique e tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine country. Due to Covid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go: • Plan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be reserved. • Understand that there may be a time limit • Ask about the different tasting experiences and costs. • If you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person. • If this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly. • Be sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.) • Be flexible • Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart. • Don’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine. “Good wine” is what you like. Period. • You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those li le sips add up fast. • You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like. • Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will! • Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)?

SONOMA§COUNTY§RECOMMENDED§WINERIES ★ BACA WINES AS WITH LIFE, BACA IS BEST EXPERIENCED FIRST HAND. • Award-Winning Wines • Panoramic Vineyard Views • World-Class Artwork Open daily; 707 433-2222; 2201 Westside Road, Healdsburg
★ BREATHLESS WINES Celebrate your breathless moments with award-winning sparkling wine! • Sparkling & Still Wines • Cheese & Charcuterie • Caviar Picnic • Sabrage Experience 707 395-7300, 499 Moore Ln, Healdsburg
★ CLINE CELLARS • Ask questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help. • Don’t feel pressured to buy a bo le or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bo le). • Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting). • Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and try not to wear white! • Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit. • Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries. • Eat breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine. • Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a bague e, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery • Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day. • If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being. • Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them. • Enjoy yourself! Be respectful of all conditions and procedures. Wineries have had challenges to adjust their normal procedures due to Covid-19. Everything they do is to insure your safety, pleasure and that you have a great time. Covid-19 has had many positive effects for wine tasting: More intimate, less crowded, more time to really talk to your winery host. With this is mind ... let’s go tasting and BY DONALD SONDERLING have fun! (It’s prudent to double check your planned visit, if possible, the day of your visit.) Legendary Talent Takes Center Stage By Melissa Vogt
This year marks the debut of the Blue Note Jazz Festival Napa Valley. This musical event, undoubtedly showcasing the best in local food and wine, will take place at the historic Charles Krug Winery in St. Helena. Dozens of artists will play over two days on three stages, July 30 and 31. The Blue Note Jazz Festival Napa Valley is the brainchild of Grammy Award winner and Blue Note artist-in-residence Robert Glasper and boasts an impressive once-in-a-lifetime musical lineup. Among the long list of exciting acts over the two-day extravaganza is: award-winning neo-soul legend Maxwell; yasiin bey and Talib Kweli, who make up the critically acclaimed group Black Star performing from their long-awaited and recently released second album No Fear of Time; legendary R&B artist Erykah Badu, regarded as one of the best jazz and R&B artists of our time and frequent collaborator with Robert Glasper; bass guitarist Thundercat, whose 2020 album It Is What It Is received a Grammy Award for best progressive R&B album; New Orleans-based brass ensemble The Soul Rebels, featuring renowned rapper GZA; LA-born, Bay Area-educated hip hop producer Flying Lotus, known for his collaborations with Kendrick Lamar and other high profile artists; and award-winning English singer/songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae. Newer talent will also be featured, including jazz debut DOMi and JD Beck, whose much-anticipated debut album is being released on Anderson Paak’s new label APESHIT, in partnership with Blue Note Records. The festival will be emceed by the one and only Sign up for our email newsletter at WineCountryThisMonth.com
groundbreaking comedian Dave Chapelle and followed by an afterparty that is sure to be as unforgettable as the main acts. Taking place at 10 p.m. the night of July 30 in the Barrel Room of Charles Krug Winery, the after party will feature the musical stylings of DJ Jazzy Jeff and DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown aka Erykah Badu. Charles Krug Winery will serve as the intimate backdrop for the Blue Note Jazz Festival Napa Valley. Owned by the Mondavi family, well-known philanthropists, Charles Krug Winery has proven itself a worthy concert setting. The oldest winery in Napa Valley, this iconic estate partnered with Blue Note Napa throughout the pandemic to serve as the venue for much-needed outdoor summer concerts during a time when concerts were sparse. Their core foundation wines, limited release wines, family reserve, and vintage selections are a testament to the incredible care and expertise that goes into the making of their well-balanced wines. There’s a wine for every palate as festival attendees dance the night away to a compendium of some of the world’s best jazz, soul, and R&B music. Paired with food highlighting some of the area’s best culinary offerings, this incredible event is sure to be a feast for the senses. General and VIP tickets to the Blue Note Jazz Festival Napa Valley sold out in an hour; but you can always add yourself to the waitlist and hope that you’ll be selected as one of the lucky few who will get to experience this not-tobe-missed event. For tickets or more information, visit the webiste at www.bluenotejazzfestival.com/napa.
