In addition to Carneros classic Pinot Noir like the 2018 Heirloom Pinot, Etude offers something for everyone including a Pinot Noir Rosé and a Blanc de Noirs Sparkling Wine. Visitors are encouraged to try a variety of wines in order to get a sense of all that this grape has to offer.

“Pinot Noir is completely different on the palate than other wines a visitor is going to taste in the Napa Valley and our winemaker, Jon Priest, is a master at creating brilliant wines with this grape,” said Ben Mason, Hospitality Sales Manager.

One of the world’s most popular varietals, Pinot Noir offers complex flavors in a dry, light- to medium-bodied wine. or aficionados as well as the uninitiated, the wines elicit bright acidity and silky tannins that are elegant and refined. And, while inot Noir can be finicky to grow, the cooler maritime air of the Los Carneros AVA is a perfect match. riest sources certified sustainable and terroir-focused fruit from the estate Grace Benoist Ranch in Los Carneros – as well as vineyards like Fiddlestix and North Canyon in the Central Coast – to create highly sought-after Pinots. Coaxing the best from each vineyard, Priest is often referred to as one of Napa’s “rockstar” winemakers for a reason.

Nestled into the rolling hills of Los Carneros, Etude’s easy location and beautiful venue beckon those looking for a unique tasting experience. For lovers of Pinot Noir, this is your winery. For those looking to discover something extraordinary, it is as well. Or, as winemaker Priest puts it, “Etude was founded on the philosophy that winemaking begins in the vineyard long before the harvest and that superior grape growing diminishes the need for intervention by the winemaker, resulting in wine that is grown, not made. This remains our approach today as we continue to build the Etude legacy.”

Sustainability is Key Established in 1982, Etude’s founding winemaker, Tony Soter, set his sights on the cool-climate Carneros region in pursuit of producing world-class Pinot Noir. Sustainability wasn’t the buzz word it is today but regardless, Soter and his team spent years perfecting holistic farming practices to protect the land and wildlife habitats, farming in concert with the surrounding environment in the wholehearted belief that wines are expressive of the place in which they are grown. This is especially true of Pinot Noir and best stated by Soter himself when he said, “Pinot Noir is the most appropriate vehicle with which to study wine growing, precisely because of its demanding nature but also because of its delicacy and transparency,” said Soter. Since then, Priest has put his own stamp on sustainability. Leading the winery for the past 17 years, he has advanced Etude’s legacy of sustainability, helping the winery become Napa reen certified both in the vineyard and in the tasting room.

16 WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

Destination: Napa’s RiverFront For decades when tourists travelled to wine and dine in the famed Wine Country of Napa Valley, they drove right past the downtown Napa exits on Highway 29. These days, downtown Napa should be a must-stop on the journey “up valley” to Yountville, Rutherford, St Helena, and Calistoga. Thanks in large part to the development of the Napa RiverFront and Promenade downtown Napa has become a destination worthy of spending the day and evening.Themastermind behind the RiverFront Development project was Mike DeSimoni Sr., an Italian immigrant who arrived in America in 1948 at 13 years of age. He began his career in the lumber business a year later. In 1966 he went to work at Channel Lumber in Richmond, CA. and in 1969 he moved his young family to Napa. Since then, his family and his property have grown exponentially. Four generations of the DeSimoni family now share a 200-acre ranch. To say that this family is close would be an understatement. They not only live on the same ranch, but they also work together. After having worked his way up through the ranks at Channel Lumber, DeSimoni purchased the company in 1982, and eventually founded Channel Properties in Napa - where his granddaughter Bianca is currently the Sales and Marketing Manager, and his son Michael DeSimoni is now Channel Lumber’s President. DeSimoni’s granddaughter Gianna Collins runs their cattle ranch, and grandson Daniel DeSimoni works at the family’s Adobe Lumber Company.

Continued, next page

In 2002, DeSimoni – who at that time was president of Channel Properties – received an award from the Napa Valley Historical Society celebrating his restoration of the Winship Building on Main Street. He said that this award and his work on the Alexandria Square Building gave him the necessary “street cred” for his next project: to build a commercial mixeduse project on the family-owned Noyes Lumber Yard property at the southwest corner of Soscol Avenue and Third Street. There was just one problem: A flood control project in the works with the Army Corp of Engineers required that the river be widened at that spot. It was time for the ultimate pivot. DeSimoni struck a brilliant deal in which he purchased the land north of the Old Napa Mill property at Fifth and Main streets and traded his property across the river with the county. DeSimoni now had a project site that became Napa’s RiverFront and Promenade. It was important to DeSimoni that the architecture and land-use reflect his European roots. Construction began in 2007 and in 2009 the RiverFront Development was awarded the Mixed-use Project of the Year by “Top Projects in the North Bay”. Buzzing with Excitement When word got out that “Iron Chef” Masaharu Morimoto had signed a lease to open a 7500-squarefoot signature restaurant at 610 Main Street it created a buzz in the Bay Area about the RiverFront, and the Bianca Simms, Karen DeSimoni, Michael DeSimoni Jr., Massimo DeSimoni (Mike Sr), Theresa DeSimoni, Jaime DeSimoni (Daniel’s wife), Daniel DeSimoni, Gianna Collins (great grandkids Kane & Gauge) Shoppe Twelve, women’s clothing boutique Authentic Mexican food and full bar at Los Agaves

To this day the excitement continues to build.

More than Great Restaurants

There are other existing retail stores, such as the Arena Gallery and Shoppe Twelve, that are playing a bit of musical chairs, switching locations within the RiverFront, providing a new location for the Napa Valley Coffee Roasting Company to move from its location further down Main Street. The Roasting Company will gain more square footage as well as outside seating at this location.

t should be noted that the first retail store to open back in 2009 was Helen Lyall – a women’s clothing store. Helen’s son’s adjoining men’s clothing store, Scott Lyall opened shortly afterwards, and both are still thriving. In addition to the stores mentioned above, additional shopping includes Shoppe Twelve Girls; Ivy, Twig & Twine – with sophisticated casual, home and garden décor; Napa River Velo – where you can buy top of the line bicycles and rent e-bikes; Zuniga Optical and Sidestreet.

Celebrity Food Network Chef Tyler Florence, a Mill Valley resident, signed on to open a fast casual restaurant and retail shop - and then the RiverFront scored North Bay Area restaurant developer Michael Dellar’s new restaurant at the intersection of Third Street and Main Street called Fish Story. Even though only Morimoto Napa remains of those three, the important thing to note is that people in the culinary world and travel industry all had become very much aware of this beautiful new development on the Napa River in downtown Napa!

excitement and anticipation of what other businesses would line the Promenade grew. Morimoto Napa would seat 200 diners that surely would take note of and patronize neighboring establishments in the future.Next,

Other restaurants on the Promenade include Los Agaves Napa, serving authentic Mexican food, and the Waterfront Seafood Grill, serving fresh seafood.

Entrecot, an Argentine restaurant just opened on the Promenade - and later this fall, Morimoto Asia is slated to open in the prominent location on Third and Main that once housed Fish Story and later Basalt (a victim of the pandemic). Its menu will not compete with Morimoto Napa a few doors down, as it will be more of an Asian-fusion menu.

NVBansheeBrut Ten of Cups, $30 California continues to offer incredible value when it comes to sparkling wines. Banshee has cra ed a delicious NV Brut in their Ten of Cups. Made in the traditional Champagne method and aged on the lees for no less than two years, this sparkling is bright and vibrant while still maintaining complexity, rich flavor, and a lot of texture. Aromas and flavors of bruised golden apple, candied lemon, and ripe pear pleasantly juxtapose themselves against notes of brioche and nuts. The smooth and creamy mouthfeel nicely contrasts the effervescent acidity. This is a seductive California sparkling.

Rodney Strong Vineyards 2017 Symmetry, $60 With five years of bo le age, the 2017 Symmetry from Rodney Strong is a powerhouse red blend that’s finding great approachability right now. It boasts aromas of red cherry and bright plum, along with dried fruit characteristics and oak spice. It’s smooth and supple on the palate with a silky profile that shows off its well-integrated tannin structure. It has enough weight and complexity to see more age, but also promises enjoyability in its present state. Made in a Meritage-blend style (which consists of two or more noble Bordeaux grape varieties), it’s comprised of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 12% Malbec, 4% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc.

New Wine Release Recommendations

Fort Ross Vineyard 2018 Fort Ross Vineyard Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast, $54 This beautiful bo ling from Fort Ross Vineyard is a classic expression of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. It has bright acidity, low alcohol, and really shows off the grapes and vineyard nicely—no heavy oak here. Dried cranberry and just-barely-ripe-enough red fruit abound on the nose; the palate is light in body with flavors of fresh raspberry, earth, and black tea. It’s a great pick for pairing alongside dinner, as that low alcohol and bright acidity will really allow it to complement a wide variety of cuisines. This is a well-made Pinot Noir with genuine characteristics, unmasked by heavy oak or interventionist winemaking techniques.byMelissa

Vogt

The Prisoner Wine Company The Prisoner, $49 In true field-blend style, The Prisoner reflects the way wine was made by Italian immigrants who originally se led in Northern California wine country. It’s made up of Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Merlot, and is aged in a combination of 30% new French and American oak. It’s a wine wholly distinct in its profile with a bouquet of blackberry, raspberry, and coconut. The palate brings forward those distinct blackberry notes, with touches of spice and vanilla. The wine is full bodied in style and nicely packages the nuances of its combined varietals—it’s rich in flavor, offers wellbalanced tannins, boasts a silky texture, and sports a deep color.

A New Home, Provençal Style

Viewed as a rebirth, if you will, this iconic brand which is synonymous with ultra-premium mountain Cabernet Sauvignon has seized the opportunity to create a ‘new’ Burgess while celebrating 50 years of winemaking later this fall. With a marked shift into low intervention winemaking and regenerative farming, Winemaker Meghan Zobeck is leading the charge on this impressive agricultural shift. After tenured winemaker Bill Sorenson’s retirement, Meghan took the helm and with her prior positions at respected producers such as Michel Rolland’s Chateau Fontenil and Bon Pasteur in Bordeaux/France as well as the cult producer Screaming Eagle, she’s perfectly positioned to honor the winery’s longstanding heritage and identity as a vineyarddriven wine program whilst introducing organic and

Embarking on an exciting new chapter in their esteemed history in Napa Valley, Burgess has settled into their new home on the southern end of the Silverado Trail (formerly Luna Vineyards) and already reoriented all aspects of their winemaking and hospitality. Their strategic move down valley was prompted by the devasting Glass Fire in 2021 which destroyed their decades old winery atop Howell Mountain, thankfully sparing the estate vineyards.

The intimate, guided tasting overlooking the picturesque St. Andrew’s Vineyard allows each wine to be experienced with as much winemaking nuance as desired. Elk Fence produces three core spirits, including whiskey, gin, and vodka. It took three years for owners Scott Woodson and Gail Coppinger to build the distillery. Finally, Elk Fence is now open for tastings, tours, and select artisan cocktails. Wineries have had challenges to adjust their normal procedures due to Covid-19. Everything they do is to insure your safety, pleasure and that you have a great time.

• Enjoy yourself!

Don’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine. “Good wine” is what you like. Period.

Helpful Tips

Be respectful of all conditions and procedures.

• Be sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.)

• Plan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be

• Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart.

Following the guidelines and etique e tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine Duecountry.toCovid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go:

• Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day.

• Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will!

(It’s prudent to double check your planned visit, if possible, the day of your visit.)

• Eat breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine.

reserved.

• Ask about the different tasting experiences and costs.

• If this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly.

• Don’t feel pressured to buy a bo le or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bo le).

• Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries.

• Understand that there may be a time limit

Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect. Additionally, Covid-19 has made it necessary for some changes and adaptations.

• If you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person.

• Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a bague e, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery

TastingWine

• You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those li le sips add up fast.

Covid-19 has had many positive effects for wine tasting: More intimate, less crowded, more time to really talk to your winery host. With this is mind ... let’s go tasting and have fun! BY DONALD SONDERLING

Ask questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help.

• If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being.

• You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like.

• Be flexible

• Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit.

• Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)?

Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting).

• Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and try not to wear white!

• Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them.
