ON THE COVER: Frank Family Vineyards A Special Wine for a Special Man The release of the RHF came on the heels of the winery’s milestone 25th anniversary in 2018. As the winery enters a new era, a new wine was born. With Frank Family’s strong presence in Rutherford, the question was not where to source the grapes, or which variety to choose, instead what they would call it.

Ledson Winery is Excited to Welcome Visitors Back to the Castle The Castle is open! Ledson Winery is back in action and thrilled to be once again hosting guests at its gorgeous Kenwood winery. The tasting room is open seven days a week by reservation for tastings between 10 am and 5 pm. Owner and winemaker Steve Ledson puts hospitality at the top of his winery’s
6
list, so guests can expect a world-class experience regardless of tastes or budget. “Our goal is to provide a memorable experience and make guests feel special,” said Steve Ledson. “When folks make a reservation, it allows us to learn their tastes and then tailor an exceptional experience that is just for them.”
Amazing Variety of Tasting Options Magnificent inside and out, the Castle is an architectural gem in the heart of Wine Country. Large by most standards, the 16,000 square foot Castle can accommodate quite a few guests in its three indoor tasting bars and private tasting suites. Each tasting bar and suite has its own unique style and family history. Among them is, Noble’s Bar, named for Steve’s father; Whitby’s Bar, named for Steve’s uncle, Whitby Ledson; Winslow’s Bar, named for another uncle, Winslow Ledson; Hannah’s private tasting suite, named for Steve’s Great Grandmother; William’s private tasting suite, named for Steve’s Great-Grandfather, and finally, Virginia’s Suite, named for Steve’s mother. Family is everything to Steve Ledson and further continuing that tradition, you can find family members among the staff as well as each and every staff member considered part of “The Extended Ledson Family.” Ledson also offers outdoor tastings in their beautiful vineyard lined Oak Grove at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains. WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK
“ There is a Ledson wine perfect for every palate and every pocketbook...” – STEVE LEDSON
Whether inside or out, choose from a variety of options including a classic tasting, private tasting, winemaker tasting or, for club members, a club experience. Whichever tasting spot and experience you choose, be sure to ask about the rich family history to learn more about the winery and the wine.
High Scoring Wines Ledson Winery has been racking up the accolades since its founding in the late 1990s, including quite a few wines that have received between 95 and 99 points many times over. The winery produces more than 70 wines annually with upward of 20 different varietals from 20 unique appellations. These range in price from $18 to $250 and, according to Steve Ledson, this breadth of offerings means there is a Ledson wine perfect for every palate and every pocketbook. Whether you’re looking to taste reds, whites or both, the friendly and knowledgeable Ledson staff is ready to guide you every step of the way. “We cater to all walks of life and welcome anyone to our winery,” said Ledson. “You can come taste and not buy anything or you can stock your entire cellar. Either way, we’re going to treat you with the respect you deserve.”
Steve’s Castle To anyone traveling along Highway 12, the Castle is instantly recognizable and immediately inspiring. For those who visit, this architectural showpiece sitting amongst the vineyards is also endlessly welcoming. Originally designed as a family residence, the Castle gained notoriety so quickly that Ledson decided to capitalize on the incredible marketing opportunities and create a grand winery instead. Built in the French Normandy style, the magnificent Castle’s peaks, turrets, and balconies are just the beginning. Inside, guests will find sweeping staircases, marble fireplaces, coffered and cathedral-style windows. The effect is awe-inspiring to say the least and the Castle is at once whimsical and historical. Ledson staff are well versed in educating interested guests.
“ Our goal is to provide a memorable experience and make guests feel special.” – STEVE LEDSON
The Marketplace If you didn’t have a chance to eat on your way to visit Ledson, you’re in luck! Sandwiches are back in the Marketplace and make the perfect accompaniment to the amazing wines. Choose from a delicious assortment of freshly made offerings, select your favorite wine, add some chips or pasta salad and head to the picnic grounds. The Marketplace also offers a large selection of olive oils, mustards, dessert and gift items. “We are thrilled to have people back at our Castle,” said Steve Ledson. “Hop online or call, make a reservation, and come enjoy everything – our delicious wines, scrumptious deli treats, beautiful Castle, and our phenomenal hospitality.”

Frank Family Vineyards Debuts the Latest Vintage of RHF Cabernet Sauvignon Frank Family Vineyards takes tremendous pride in producing each of their high quality, handcrafted wines. But, in 2016, they made an incredibly special and personal bottle, the RHF Cabernet Sauvignon, named after their inspirational owner and founder, Richard Harvey Frank. The release of the RHF came on the heels of the winery’s milestone 25th anniversary in 2018. As the winery enters a new era, a new wine was born. With Frank Family’s strong presence in Rutherford, the question was not where to source the grapes, or which variety to choose, instead what they would call it. “We wanted to create something special for our club members and guests who visit us at the winery, and I thought who is more special than my husband, Richard Frank? All of our vineyards are named after our grandchildren and our dogs, so it was time to have a wine named after the man who started it all,” says Frank Family Co-Proprietor, Leslie Frank. Rich Frank previously spent his career as a film executive in Hollywood, serving as President of Disney Studios for a decade before opening the doors to Frank Family Vineyards in 1993. Today, Rich and wife, Leslie have proudly grown their passion for wine into a business. Frank Family Vineyards has become a household name for premium Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, consistently receiving high critic ratings and winning awards for having the best tasting room in Napa Valley.

The Iconic Hilltop Site RHF also pays homage to Frank Family’s estate Rutherford vineyards from which the wine is sourced: Frank Family’s own Benjamin Vineyard on the valley floor, and their crown jewel hillside vineyard, Winston Hill. It is here, on Winston Hill’s southwest-facing slopes where Frank Family’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grow. The prestigious Rutherford viticulture area is home to some of Napa Valley’s most celebrated wines and has been home to Frank Family’s coveted Cabernet Sauvignons for the past few decades. The RHF captures the character of Rutherford from its endless layers of soft, silky black fruit and punches of cinnamon and classic Rutherford dust that has come to define the great wines of this wine-growing region. As Frank Family kicks off its 28th harvest season, the winery is delighted to release the third vintage in an already incredible lineage of wines, the 2018 RHF. Hailing from an impressive and near-perfect year, this Cabernet Sauvignon also sees small additions of Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. “The latest release of the RHF is soft and supple and, despite its youth, is already showing beautifully in the glass,” said Frank Family Winemaker Todd Graff. “It will continue to grow and find added grace for decades to come,” he continued. The RHF is available to purchase exclusively at the Frank Family tasting room located on Larkmead Lane in Calistoga and on the winery’s online wine shop at frankfamilyvineyards.com. The wine is also available to taste as part of Frank Family’s elevated Wines of Winston Hill Tasting, featuring their highly acclaimed red wines that all share a common source of origin. RODNEY STRONG VINEYARDS “My goal in life is to make wines that make you happy” JUSTIN SEIDENFELD, Director of Winemaking
When visionary Rodney Strong founded Rodney Strong Vineyards in 1959, his passion and vision was to produce world-class wines focusing on an obligation to community, sustainability, and environmental responsibility. That commitment and vision has been the driving force behind Rodney Strong Vineyards since the beginning. Always looking to the future, when the Klein Family (fourth generation California farmers) purchased the operation from Strong in 1989, they did so with an obligation to carry on the same vision of its founder.
10
Winemaker Justin Seidenfeld has been with Rodney Strong Vineyards for ten years – being only the fourth winemaker in this esteemed winery’s sixty-year history. He carries on the vision of the founder, being intricately engaged in producing exciting wines and committed to continuing the vineyard’s leadership role in sustainability. Setting an example for environmental responsibility, the winery conserves water, energy, and natural resources, all while utilizing technology effectively, so as to have as little impact on vineyard sites as possible. Producing high quality wines, while reducing negative environmental effects is done without compromise. One example is that all of Rodney Strong’s eleven estate vineyards are certified sustainable, as are the vineyards they source from. The entire staff has always been committed to their founder’s vision.
WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK
A Rejuvenation
The Wines
Today, there is an exciting rejuvenation taking place at the winery. This includes all aspects of “winemaking,” - the soil, the growing, new bottle labeling, production, etc. Literally every aspect of the operation is under a microscope and being evaluated and reinvented. The goal of course, is to make great wine, which can’t be done without growing great grapes. To this end, all of the vineyards Rodney Strong sources from are example of innovation, change, and vision in vineyard management practices. Changes are being made such as canopy management, thereby reducing the use of irrigation and utilizing moisture sensors. The minutest details are looked at, down to brooming out winery floors instead of always cleaning by water hoses. All of the changes being implemented help preserve the environment, while producing grapes of outstanding quality to be used in the wine that will end up on your table. Rodney Strong Vineyards was Sonoma County’s thirteenth bonded winery, and may be considered the crown jewel in this esteemed growing area, by constantly staying ahead of the times and setting new trends.
Year after year, Rodney Strong wines consistently receive praise and high scores from industry publications such as Wine Enthusiast Magazine, Wine & Spirits Magazine and The Tasting Panel. These are wines that will please almost any palate, from the novice to more sophisticated wine lover. Currently, among Strong’s selection, there are nine separate varietals produced, including a mouth-watering Sauvignon Blanc, an elegant Chardonnay plus an estate and single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, both of which are refined, expressing a plethora of aromas and intertwined flavors as you would expect from a quality Cabernet Sauvignon. Rodney Strong’s vision, commitment to community and the future, has been carried on non-stop for generations. If he was here today to see how his dreams have been realized, and new dreams conceived, he might sit down, with a glass of Chardonnay (being the varietal the brand was built around), taking pride in knowing that of all the achievements over the last six decades, the one that may be the most satisfying, is that Rodney Strong Vineyards’ solar energy system is one of the largest of any winery in the world. He would smile knowing his commitment to the earth’s future, and sustainability, has made Rodney Strong Vineyards the first winery in Sonoma County to offset their carbon footprintbeing an example for others. Lift a glass to a true visionary, his love of community, mother earth, and of course, wine. These are wines that will make you happy.

Beaulieu Vineyard Debuts New Rutherford Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Elevated Bottling Continues BV’s Legacy of Innovation in Rutherford and the Cult Cabernet Category Beaulieu Vineyard, founded in 1900 and a pioneering winery of the Rutherford appellation, recently announced the release of its inaugural vintage of the 2018 Rutherford Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($80 per 750 ml bottle). With more than a century of experience in Rutherford, Beaulieu’s extensive vineyard study, block by block, and its experimentation with various techniques culminates in this new wine – the ultimate expression of Rutherford terroir. Beaulieu Vineyard has not debuted a nationally available, new wine since 1990. The winery’s heritage in the region makes it one of the largest and oldest landowners of vineyards in Rutherford—amounting to over 360 acres—and is a founding member of the Rutherford Dust Society, a membership organization dedicated to the highest standards of grape-growing and winemaking in the region. Its history as one of the preeminent cult Cabernet producers makes it a must-know for wine lovers and collectors alike. Beaulieu Vineyard’s Rutherford Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from some of the best and most historic blocks in the heart of Rutherford. These blocks produce intensely concentrated and layered fruit, resulting in a wine that is a
IMPECCABLE HOSPITALITY
quintessential representation of Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon, with layered aromatics, depth of flavor, finesse, and taut structure. “The winemaking team and I handled the fruit with the utmost care, enhancing the distinctive attributes through a 21-month aging process exclusively utilizing French oak barrels that we had yet to employ before,” says Winemaker and General Manager Trevor Durling. “The resulting wine offers depth and balance along with the tell-tale note of ‘Rutherford Dust,’ leading to a velvety-smooth and persistent finish. Legendary California wine figure André Tchelistcheff was right when he said, ‘It takes Rutherford Dust to make great wine.’” The 2018 vintage was one of the premier vintages of the past decade for Napa Valley. The region enjoyed an ideal growing season and harvest, resulting in a stunning first vintage of the Rutherford Reserve with concentrated flavors, color, and excellent acidity. Aged in 80% new French oak with small percentages of Malbec and Petit Verdot to enhance the complex flavor profile, Beaulieu Vineyard’s newest offering will cement its place as a wine to know in its debut year and beyond as it becomes a permanent offering for the winery. Beaulieu Vineyard is located at 1960 St. Helena Highway in Rutherford. For more information, or tasting reservations, call (707) 257-5749 or visit the website at bvwines.com.

Tips on
Wine Tasting
Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect. Additionally, Covid-19 has made it necessary for some changes and adaptations. Following the guidelines and etiquette tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine country. Due to Covid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go:
• Plan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be reserved. • Understand that there may be a time limit •A sk about the different tasting experiences and costs. • I f you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person. • I f this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly. •B e sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.)
VISIT NAPA VALLEY/DAVID COLLIER
• Be flexible Covid-19 has had many positive effects for wine tasting: More intimate, less crowded, more time to really talk to your winery host. With this is mind-LET’S GO TASTING AND HAVE FUN! • Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart.
• Don’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine. “Good wine” is what you like. Period. • You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those little sips add up fast. • You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like. • Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will!
• Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)? • Ask questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help. • Don’t feel pressured to buy a bottle or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bottle). • Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting).

GOOD TO KNOW • Acidity: The level of natural acids in a wine that give it freshness and crispness on the palate. • American Viticultural Area (AVA): A government-approved winegrowing region whose geological and climatic conditions create wines of distinction. A specific appellation of origin. • Body: A term used to describe the weight of a wine on the palate. • Bouquet: A term for the fragrance of a wine developed after it has been aged. Sometimes used interchangeably with “aroma,” which is technically the fragrance of a wine before aging.
• Brix: A grape ripeness scale, used primarily in the U.S., that measures solids (sugars) inside the juice of a grape. • Cap: The top surface of the must, where solids accumulate and are then pushed back down (punched down) into the juice to increase skin contact. • Crush: Harvest season that starts with picking grapes and ends months later with the transfer of wine to barrel. • Cuvée: A Champagne house’s best offering, usually made from the first pressing of grapes; A • Estate-bottled: The wine was under the control of the producer, start to finish.
• Fermentation: The transformation of grape juice into wine as sugar plus yeast convert to alcohol and carbon dioxide (and heat).
WALT WINES, SONOMA
• Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and try not to wear white!
• Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit. • Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries.
•E at breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine.
• Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a baguette, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery • Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day.
• If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being.
• Finish: The impression a wine leaves on the palate after swallowing or spitting. • Lees: Dead yeast cells from fermentation that settle at the bottom of a barrel or tank. When stirred in the wine, as done during the aging of Chardonnay, lees add body and creaminess. • Legs: Streams of wine that run down the inside wall of a wine glass. Narrow, fast-moving legs generally indicate low alcohol content and light body, while wide, slow legs usually mean richness and higher alcohol. • Maceration: A time period that allows grape skins to make contact with grape juice, usually before fermentation begins, in order to develop deeper color in the finished wine. • Meritage: The unique American term for a Bordeaux-style blended red wine made in the U.S. from two or more of the five classic red grapes of Bordeaux. Not more than 90% of a single grape can make up a wine labeled as Meritage. • Must: The mixture of unfermented grape juice with the solids from skins, stems and seeds of the grapes. • Nose: A term to describe how a wine smells, sometimes used in place of “aroma.”
• Reserve: Term used by a producer that usually indicates a wine ranked among their highest tier of quality. • Sediment: Residue accumulated during extended aging of a bottle of wine. Red wine sediment is formed by color pigments, tannin molecules and tartrates. White wine can sometimes show sediment of tartrates that appear as crystals. • Sulfites: Chemical compounds of sulfur that act as a preservative in wine.
• Enjoy yourself!
• Tannin: A primary component in red wine, it is a chemical compound (phenolic) developed in wine when fermenting juice makes extended contact with skins, seeds and stems; also added to wine as it ages in contact with oak. At an elevated level, tannin gives wine a dryness on the palate and causes the mouth to pucker (astringency), but when balanced with other components it provides the necessary structure that gives texture and grip.
Please be respectful of all conditions and procedures. Wineries have had challenges to adjust their normal procedures due to Covid-19. Everything they do is to insure your safety, pleasure and that you have a great time.
• Terroir: The accumulation of all conditions surrounding a grape-growing site, including soil, sunlight, daytime an nighttime temperatures, rainfall, drainage, elevation, etc., all contributing to each wine’s uniqueness.
• Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them.
Ready? Let’s go wine tasting!
