Bristol

Throughout the month of November, Frank Family is donating 20% of all proceeds from each online purchase of their 2018 Napa Valley Merlot to the Humane Society of the United States.

Support Rescue Animals with Frank Family Vineyards Renowned, Calistoga-based Frank Family Vineyards bid farewell to their beloved winery dog, Bristol earlier this year. Bristol was the winery’s official greeter, harvest helper, and Winemaker Todd Graff’s “right-paw” for 15 years. From tasting grapes straight off the vine to swimming in the reservoir at their estate Benjamin Vineyard, Bristol certainly lived the quintessential Napa Valley pup lifestyle. He was adored by everyone who visited the tasting room and will be dearly missed. In Bristol’s honor, Frank Family is proud to partner with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), whose incredible work for animals is a fitting tribute to their rescue pup’s memory. The Humane Society is the world’s most effective animal welfare organization who confronts the largest problems facing animals through the areas of public policy, education, and direct care. Their impactful work has made animal cruelty a felony in every state, saved thousands of lives by shutting down puppy mills through raids and policy efforts,

and provided hands-on care to millions of animals through rescue teams, veterinary programs, care centers, and sanctuaries. Throughout the month of November, Frank Family is donating 20% of all proceeds from each online purchase of their 2018 Napa Valley Merlot to the HSUS to support the charity’s lifesaving work. Plus, each bottle purchase of Frank Family 2018 Napa Valley Merlot includes a free limited-edition Frank Family dog bandana until November 30, while supplies last. “This holiday season, we hope you join us in sharing a bottle of Merlot with your loved ones, both in person and on social media, and help spread the word for our cause every time your furry friend wears our exclusive Frank Family bandana,” said Co-Proprietor, Leslie Frank. “Your support makes it possible for the Humane Society to help save the lives of all animals and to advocate on their behalf,” she continued. Since Frank Family’s first Frank for a Cause campaign benefiting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in 2018, the winery has donated over $100,000 to deserving charities across the nation; including the James Beard Foundation, Feeding America, and Autism Speaks. Rich and Leslie Frank are planning new charitable initiatives for 2022 and are excited to continue to give back. Supporters of Frank Family’s ongoing charitable campaigns on social media are encouraged to use #FrankForACause. For more information or to acquire wine to give back to this worthy cause, visit FrankFamilyVineyards.com.

The Humane Society of the United States Founded in 1954, the Humane Society of the United States fights the big fights to end suffering for all animals. Together with millions of supporters, they take on puppy mills, factory farms, trophy hunts, animal testing and other cruel industries. With their affiliates, the HSUS rescues and cares for tens of thousands of animals every year through their animal rescue team’s work and other hands-on animal care services. They fight all forms of animal cruelty to achieve the vision behind their name: A humane society. “We’re thrilled that Frank Family Vineyards chose the Humane Society of the United States as their “Frank for a Cause” benefiting charity this holiday season and can’t wait to see the positive impact this partnership has on our lifesaving work for animals around the world,” said Kristie Tanner, Director of Business Partnerships for the Humane Society of the United States.

Bennett Lane Winery ‘The Friendliest Tasting Room’

Located at the north end of Napa Valley, near the quaint town of Calistoga, Bennett Lane Winery is a charming and elegant escape from the noisy bustle of larger wineries in Napa Valley. Named the “friendliest tasting room” for its comfortable and welcoming ambiance, their wines are by far some of the best you’ll taste. Bennett Lane Winery was inspired by Italy’s wine and food culture. Their winemaking philosophy is to produce wines that complement a meal rather than overshadow it. The results are the popular Maximus wines which they call their “feasting wines” – a red and white wine that can accompany most meals and celebrations, from simple dinners to relaxing al fresco lunches. As a tribute to their passion for Italy’s wine history, each label features an authentic Roman denarius coin. Over 2,000 years old, these coins pay honor to wine and its significance in ancient Rome. In fact, during their travels in Italy, the winery’s founders collected these coins which are on display in the tasting room. Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom adorns the Reserve Chardonnay and Rosé. Bacchus, the God of Wine is proudly featured on the Cabernet Sauvignon and Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Magnus Maximus, Roman Caesar, is displayed on the Maximus Red Feasting Wine and Maximus White Feasting Wine. Bennett Lane’s wines continuously receive critical acclaim. Winemaker Rob Hunter has garnered over 60 scores of 90 points or higher between publications such as the Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Year after year the popular Maximus red blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah wine receives accolades from critics and visitors alike.

8

Many of their other wines - which include Reserve Chardonnay, Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petite Sirah – are very small production and reserved primarily for the wine club. A must-taste is the 2014 Maximus Red Feasting Wine. Composed of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petite Sirah, 4% Merlot, 3% Syrah, and 2% Petite Verdot, this approachable red blend showcases robust flavors of dried cherry, raspberry, blueberry, and caramel notes. WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

Signature Seated Tasting A fabulous introduction to Bennett Lane Winery is through their signature seated tasting in the winery garden. Enjoy incredible views of the Palisades Mountains while tasting four of their signature wines, including Chardonnay, Maximus Red Feasting Wine, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Reserve Seated Tasting The Reserve Seated Tasting is a private tasting in the winery garden that features four Reserve wines: the Chardonnay and three Reserve Cabernet Sauvignons. This experience is for groups of 2-6 people to discover the wines and history of the winery. Your personal wine educator will pour four small-lot wines at a leisurely pace, allowing you the opportunity to sip and learn the full story of each bottling – the winemaking, fruit sourcing, cellaring and more. Priced at $45 per person, it’s a classic example of the hospitality that Bennett Lane is known for.

Wine Blending Experience If you’d like a more hands-on approach, then you must check out the Wine Blending Experience. This begins with a sensory evaluation seminar focused on Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah – the principal components in Bennett Lane’s signature red Maximus blend – followed by the fun opportunity to blend your own bottle of Maximus Red Feasting Wine! Once you have your blend finalized you will also bottle, cork, foil, and label your very own individual bottle (one per person). Now that’s a true memento of wine country you won’t be able to get anywhere else! The experience concludes with a glass of your blend and a tasting of reserve wines. Bennett Lane Winery is a relaxing and beautiful jewel tucked away from the crowded highways, with unparalleled views of stunning mountains and estate vineyards. >> BY JILLIAN BAKER

Jelly Belly Visitor Center – A Sweet Surprise Sweet Dreams are Made of This

If You Want to See Paradise…

The Jelly Belly Factory got its start way back in 1869, when 24-year-old founder, Gustav Goelitz, opened his candy business (then known as A. G. Confectionary Company) in Belleville, Illinois. 152 years and four generations later, the term “Jelly Belly” is synonymous with gourmet jelly beans and other delicious candies.

I highly recommend the self-guided tour. Saunter the quarter-mile perimeter of the factory at your own pace and enjoy a 360-degree view of the whole candy-making process below. Video screens and interactive games are strategically placed along the way to help you along your journey. This tour is regularly voted “Best Factory Tour” by several notable publications.

So Much to See and Do! The Jelly Belly Visitor Center in Fairfield is a magical place – here’s what’s on the menu when you come to visit: • Explore the factory at your own pace with a self-guided tour • Enjoy interactive exhibits and games along the tour lane • Peruse the Jelly Belly Jelly Bean Art Gallery • Select sweet gifts at the Jelly Belly Candy Store • Dine at the Jelly Belly Café • Shop the Jelly Belly Chocolate Shoppe •S ample and sip your way through the Chocolate & Wine Experience

10

Beans, Beans, They’re Good For Your Art… Peruse amazing jelly bean portraits by local artist, Kristen Cumings. It takes her 6-8 weeks and about 100 hours of work to create a portrait-sized piece of bean art, depending on the complexity of the piece. She starts with an underpainting to serve as a guide for color placement, then the jelly beans are placed one by one on top of the painting in a mosaic pattern as close together as possible, then she finishes the piece with an inedible resin to preserve and seal the jelly beans in place. WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

Fun for the Whole Family Whether you’re a sugar daddy, a sugar momma or a sugar kiddo, you’ll find delectable and rather quirky jelly beans, treats, clothing and other Jelly Belly swag, perfect for your unique taste. Personally, I love the “Belly Flops,” the rather misshapen, but still totally delicious jelly bean rejects.

Burgers, Fries, and Pizza, Too! The Jelly Belly Café is a savory oasis where you may relax after touring and shopping and eat some real food – some of the dishes are even shaped liked jelly beans!

Mmmmm! Chocolate! The Jelly Belly Visitor Center doesn’t just make jelly beans, the Jelly Belly Chocolate Shoppe features a delicious assortment of chocolate treats, sure to please the chocoholic on your gift list.

You Can Even Eat The Dishes…

IMPECCABLE HOSPITALITY

The Jelly Belly Factory has partnered up with some of the wonderful local wineries of the Suisun Valley to create a sweetly unique wine pairing experience – sip, swirl, savor and nibble your way through a flight of wines, paired with house-made chocolate treats. My favorite part of this fun pairing was the late harvest wine served in an edible dark chocolate shot glass. Yes, I ate the glass. Don’t miss this magical place! BY SUE STRAIGHT, THE WINE WENCH®

Winemaker Profile

DAVID SUNDBERG TEDESCHI FAMILY WINERY

Winemaker. Winemaking. Wine. The words conjure romance, glamour, glorious fall nights by a toasty fire. In actuality, the process of winemaking is a lengthy and arduous task but one that suits David Sundberg perfectly. As the resident winemaker at Tedeschi Family Winery for the past eleven years, Sundberg understands the nuances of modern winemaking including things like large and small harvests, drought years, wildfires, and so much more. Today, Tedeschi Family Winery produces around 2,000 cases per year – up from just a couple hundred cases a decade ago – with varietals that include both a Napa Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc, a Primitivo, a rosé, a Viognier and, of course, their flagship Petite Sirah among others. Along the way, Sundberg has been there to guide the family, eventually taking over as head winemaker. He is well equipped to lead the charge, given a degree in enology from California State Fresno. Armed with his degree and a fair amount of experience thanks to the school’s 300-ton winery set-up, Sundberg jumped head first into his career, making wine for Ste. Michelle Estates, Elara, Conn Creek and Villa Mt. Eden. To broaden his industry scope, Sundberg uprooted himself, relocating to Chile to make wine for a small family winery in the Maipo Valley. Returning to the States with fresh knowledge and an international perspective, Sundberg continued to hone his winemaking skills while consulting for wineries that included Ottimino, William Knuttel Wines and Tedeschi Family Winery. The very family-oriented nature of Tedeschi appealed to Sundberg and he fell into an easy rapport with patriarch, Emil Tedeschi. Possessing a similar winemaking style that strives for

12

balance, and one that reflects the character of the individual varietal, Sundberg and Tedeschi built a mutual respect for one another. Over the years, Sundberg’s knowledge of the industry and winemaking aptitude have helped Tedeschi Family Winery grow their production with increasing quality in each passing vintage. “Emil and the family have a winemaking style that is similar to mine and this is why it’s been such a joy to work with them over the years,” said Sundberg who went on to describe the wines as refined. “We aim for restraint. Big, overripe wines are not a part of our flavor profile.” It seems to be working as the winery’s club has been growing by leaps and bounds with the wines being “well received” by locals and visitors alike. The tasting room is now open by appointment, making a visit a more relaxing and enjoyable experience for all parties. “We look forward to guests touring the winery and tasting our wines,” said Sundberg who encourages people to check the website for upcoming events or to make reservations. A bit of a jack of all trades, Sundberg is also a talented chef who is as passionate about food as he is about winemaking. In his down time, he lives in Santa Rosa with his wife and two young sons. Tedeschi Family Winery is located at 2779 Grant Street, Calistoga, just a half a mile south of Old Faithful Geyser. Visitors are invited to the winery Monday-Saturday by appointment from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for tasting. There is no commercial signage, so look for the address and a big barrel to enjoy the winery’s private setting and picnic area! BY JODY PURDOM WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

Tips on

Wine Tasting

Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect. Additionally, Covid-19 has made it necessary for some changes and adaptations. Following the guidelines and etiquette tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine country. Due to Covid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go:

• Plan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be reserved. • Understand that there may be a time limit •A sk about the different tasting experiences and costs. • I f you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person. • I f this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly. •B e sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.)

VISIT NAPA VALLEY/DAVID COLLIER

• Be flexible Covid-19 has had many positive effects for wine tasting: More intimate, less crowded, more time to really talk to your winery host. With this is mind-LET’S GO TASTING AND HAVE FUN! • Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart.

• Don’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine. “Good wine” is what you like. Period. • You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those little sips add up fast. • You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like. • Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will!

• Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)? • Ask questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help. • Don’t feel pressured to buy a bottle or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bottle). • Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting).

GOOD TO KNOW • Acidity: The level of natural acids in a wine that give it freshness and crispness on the palate. • American Viticultural Area (AVA): A government-approved winegrowing region whose geological and climatic conditions create wines of distinction. A specific appellation of origin. • Body: A term used to describe the weight of a wine on the palate. • Bouquet: A term for the fragrance of a wine developed after it has been aged. Sometimes used interchangeably with “aroma,” which is technically the fragrance of a wine before aging.

• Brix: A grape ripeness scale, used primarily in the U.S., that measures solids (sugars) inside the juice of a grape. • Cap: The top surface of the must, where solids accumulate and are then pushed back down (punched down) into the juice to increase skin contact. • Crush: Harvest season that starts with picking grapes and ends months later with the transfer of wine to barrel. • Cuvée: A Champagne house’s best offering, usually made from the first pressing of grapes; A • Estate-bottled: The wine was under the control of the producer, start to finish.

• Fermentation: The transformation of grape juice into wine as sugar plus yeast convert to alcohol and carbon dioxide (and heat).

WALT WINES, SONOMA

• Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and try not to wear white!

• Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit. • Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries.

•E at breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine.

• Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a baguette, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery • Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day.

• If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being.

• Finish: The impression a wine leaves on the palate after swallowing or spitting. • Lees: Dead yeast cells from fermentation that settle at the bottom of a barrel or tank. When stirred in the wine, as done during the aging of Chardonnay, lees add body and creaminess. • Legs: Streams of wine that run down the inside wall of a wine glass. Narrow, fast-moving legs generally indicate low alcohol content and light body, while wide, slow legs usually mean richness and higher alcohol. • Maceration: A time period that allows grape skins to make contact with grape juice, usually before fermentation begins, in order to develop deeper color in the finished wine. • Meritage: The unique American term for a Bordeaux-style blended red wine made in the U.S. from two or more of the five classic red grapes of Bordeaux. Not more than 90% of a single grape can make up a wine labeled as Meritage. • Must: The mixture of unfermented grape juice with the solids from skins, stems and seeds of the grapes. • Nose: A term to describe how a wine smells, sometimes used in place of “aroma.”

• Reserve: Term used by a producer that usually indicates a wine ranked among their highest tier of quality. • Sediment: Residue accumulated during extended aging of a bottle of wine. Red wine sediment is formed by color pigments, tannin molecules and tartrates. White wine can sometimes show sediment of tartrates that appear as crystals. • Sulfites: Chemical compounds of sulfur that act as a preservative in wine.

• Enjoy yourself!

• Tannin: A primary component in red wine, it is a chemical compound (phenolic) developed in wine when fermenting juice makes extended contact with skins, seeds and stems; also added to wine as it ages in contact with oak. At an elevated level, tannin gives wine a dryness on the palate and causes the mouth to pucker (astringency), but when balanced with other components it provides the necessary structure that gives texture and grip.

Please be respectful of all conditions and procedures. Wineries have had challenges to adjust their normal procedures due to Covid-19. Everything they do is to insure your safety, pleasure and that you have a great time.

• Terroir: The accumulation of all conditions surrounding a grape-growing site, including soil, sunlight, daytime an nighttime temperatures, rainfall, drainage, elevation, etc., all contributing to each wine’s uniqueness.

• Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them.

Ready? Let’s go wine tasting!
