people caught littering and dumping illegally. The Park Boulevard reconstruction project will resurface the road from Alta Loma Drive to Twentynine Palms Highway. The board awarded a construction contract for nearly $1.3 million for the project to Matich Corporation in San Bernardino.
The board also accepted the Morongo Basin Active Transportation Plan, which identifies potential bike and pedestrian routes within the Morongo Basin. Moving into the discussion portion of the meeting, the supervisors discussed code enforcement’s role in punishing people who litter or illegally dump trash in the county.

Landlords are allies in push to help homeless
By Stacy Moore
Hi-Desert Star
JOSHUA TREE — The solution to homelessness is housing. For Don Smith, director of the county’s Pathways to Housing, it’s that basic. “That doesn’t mean some people don’t have mental-health issues, or addiction issues, or are irresponsible, but those are secondary issues,” Smith said. To solve that basic issue — to get homeless people into homes — Smith and Wayne Hamilton hosted a landlord fair Tuesday, July 30, in the Sportsman’s Club where they told property owners about programs that can help more people afford rentals. Hamilton, who works with homeless families through Morongo Unified School District, recently got a grant from the Homeless Emergency Aid Program.

Artists from across the continent get ready to celebrate national park
TWENTYNINE PALMS — Fifty-seven artists have been selected for the juried exhibition at the Joshua Tree National Park Art Exposition 2019 in September. Five jurors met and judged 347 works submitted by 137 artists from across the U.S. and Canada Saturday, July 20. After nearly seven hours of deliberation, the jury selected 57 artists and art pieces for this year’s show, featuring artwork depicting or inspired by Joshua Tree National Park or its cultural history. Categories this year will be two-dimensional, three-dimensional and photography. The exhibition will be on display at the
29 Palms Art Gallery in September. Joshua Tree artists selected are Benjamin Allanoff, Marcia Geiger, Louis Hernandez, Alane Levinsohn and photographers Matt Collins, Doug Dolde, David McChesney, Mitch Miller, Kevin Powell and Jim Smart. Yucca Valley artists are Janis Commentz, Laurie Schafer, Esther Shaw, Travis Usher, Nichole Vikdal and photographer Tami Roleff. Twentynine Palms will be represented by artists Whitney Gardner, Elisabeth Pollnow, Mark Spicak and Timothy Warren.

JOSHUA TREE — The solution to homelessness is housing. For Don Smith, director of the county’s Pathways to Housing, it’s that basic. “That doesn’t mean some people don’t have mental-health issues, or addiction issues, or are irresponsible, but those are secondary issues,” Smith said.

day night, July 25, after their Ford Mustang was stranded by rising water on Barbara Lane north of Amboy Road. An 8-inch wall of water overtook the man and woman’s vehicle as they headed home in the wake of a summer storm, Battalion Chief Donny Viloria said. The water caused their vehicle to stall and settled into a puddle that filled the road from one side to the other and extended along the road for three quarters of a mile, Viloria said. With the stormwater reaching the bottom of the vehicle’s doors, the couple called 911 for help. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 9:15 p.m.

The chief said firefighters traveled parallel to the flooded road to get to the couple, then pulled them from the vehicle and got them to safe, dry land. The incident was the only storm-related assist firefighters performed, according to Viloria. The monsoon storm drenched some parts of the Morongo Basin while leaving others dry and mildly cloudy. Twentynine Palms was one of the hardest hit communities. City crews closed Split Rock Avenue, Tamarisk Avenue, Ocotillo Avenue, Bullion Mountain Road, Bagdad Highway, Joe Davis Drive and El Rey Avenue because of flooded washes. Around 2 inches of rain fell in some places in Twentynine Palms and more than a half-inch of rain in Joshua Tree, according to San JUSTIN TOMAJCIK Hi-Desert Star Stormwater turns a dry wash into a raging river in Twentynine Palms Bernardino County.
