JOSHUA TREES are protected

P

roperty owners must get permits to remove or replant a Joshua tree, even if it’s dead, or to trim its branches. If you live in Yucca Valley, you’re also required to get a permit if trenching for your new sewer connection will get within 10 feet of a western Joshua tree. The state fees range from $525 to $4,175, depending on where the tree is growing and how tall it is. If you get your permit through the town of Yucca Valley, the town will also charge a permit fee. State fees are as follows: • On undeveloped land: $2,425 to relocate or $4,175 to remove a Western Joshua tree at least 4 meters tall; $625 to relocate and $1,050 to remove a tree under 4 meters. • On developed land: $700 to relocate or $2,100 to remove a Joshua tree 4 meters or higher; $175 to relocate or $525 to remove a tree under 4 meters. The town of Yucca Valley is allowed to issue permits for the removal of western Joshua trees in town limits under certain conditions. The town can grant permits to remove Joshua trees only to make room for a single-family 22

house or accessory structure, a sewer connection or a public structure or road. They may also allow removal of dead trees and trimming by a certified arborist if a limb has fallen, is leaning against a building or creates a threat to public health. For more information, contact the following: • If you need a permit to remove or trim up to nine western Joshua trees on a single-family property in the town of Yucca Valley or if sewer trenching will get within 10 feet of a tree on your single-family property, contact Janet Yochmowitz at jyochmowitz@yuccavalley.org or (760) 369-6575, ext. 324. • If you need a permit to remove or trench near a western Joshua tree on any property besides single-family in Yucca Valley, or for projects involving 10 or more trees in Yucca Valley, contact the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. Visit wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/ CESA/WJT or email WJT@wildlife.ca.gov. • If you need a permit to remove, replant or trim a western Joshua tree anywhere besides the town of Yucca Valley, contact the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. Visit wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/CESA/WJT or email WJT@wildlife.ca.gov.

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS

living in harmony with coyotes

M

any of us, as desert dwellers, have a story about the time we came face to face with a handsome coyote family while out for our evening walk or how Fido or Fluffy just barely avoided becoming a tasty snack. A close encounter is possible when we least expect it, especially when considering the sheer strength, stealth and cunning of these powerful and resourceful creatures. But, it’s helpful to keep in mind that we moved into their habitat. In the end, we are seeking the same things: food, water, safety in our homes and the ability to protect our families. The more we educate ourselves about our local fauna and realize that there are common-sense ways to live together in this desert ecosystem, the more likely we are to peacefully co-exist and maintain a healthy respect for what nature has to offer here in this northern extension of the of the Colorado desert. Part of the dog family (canidae), the coyote’s scientific name, Canis latrans, means “barking dog.” These highly adaptable omnivores will eat anything from small mammals, reptiles, rodents and arthropods (like scorpions and crickets) to plant material such as fruit, seeds, beans, fan palm fruit and dates. Nocturnal hunters, they are valuable as rodent control. Their only predator is man. Coyotes usually mate for life, and breeding takes place between January and March. If you see a group of three to six coyotes, it is most likely a mated pair and their young of the year or a group of litter mates. Here are some steps we can take to keep ourselves

and our pets safe as well as to protect the survival of this spectacular species: • Keep secure lids on garbage cans and compost bins. • Remove standing water including outdoor pet water bowls. • Collect fruit that has fallen to the ground from fruit trees. • Keep cats and small dogs indoors unless outside with them, and bring them in at night when hunting coyotes are most active. • Do not try to feed or tame coyotes. This type of habituation can cause the coyote to see the human as a source of food, leading to overly aggressive coyote populations who no longer fear humans. California Department of Fish and Game even coordinates a campaign called “Keep Me Wild,” which protects both humans and coyotes. • Do not try to “eradicate” coyote populations with poison and fire arms. Not only is this cruel if the coyotes have a den of pups waiting to be fed, but also it opens up the habitable territory for another searching predator to make its own and creates more problems than it solves. So, what if you are unloading your groceries and you look up to see six coyotes standing bolt still staring right back at you? If you can’t quickly get inside to your home or car, and especially if a coyote starts to approach you, it is strongly advised that you make loud noises to “haze” the coyote and even throw rocks or pebbles towards the animal. Remember, the goal is to keep them in fear to avoid future interaction, without causing harm. The Humane Society’s website at hsus.org has other suggestions on how to live in harmony with our furry, feathered or scaly neighbors, and livingdesert.org also offers some very useful information. A wild coyote is a safe coyote.

iving in the desert brings many delights like the scenic landscape, toasty temperatures and abundance of fitness and outdoor exploration opportunities. There are some overwhelmingly beautiful examples of plant and animal life that can take our breath away.

Africanized Honey Bees

There was a local news story in 2014 about a woman who was stung 1,000 times on the grounds of a country club, and, although she went into shock, she was raced to the hospital and recovered. According to the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District in Indio, bees are not aggressive unless they feel threatened. They are also attracted to strong perfumes and shiny objects, and they are bothered by loud noises. Workers trimming trees have been known to disrupt hives, as well. Africanized honey bees, or “killer bees,” came to the area in the early 2000s and are known for being very protective of their home and easily disturbed. But all bees will be aggressive if disturbed. The best action is to stay away from the bees, as in leave them alone. If they do attack, run away. Do not swat or flail your arms because the movement could attract the bees. Be prepared to run up to a quarter of a mile until you can find shelter, as that’s about how far they’ll stray from their hive. While escaping, try to protect your face and throat with a jacket or shirt. And avoid getting into water because bees will wait until you come up for air. And, as hard as it may be not to panic, try not to harm the pollinating bees. Professionals should be called in to remove the hives if needed. Bobcats “Here, kitty kitty” probably won’t work to befriend these guys. According to experts, there are more than 100,000 bobcats in California, many of them living in the desert. The sightings in people’s backyards are due to the cats’ desire for food, and there have been sightings in Palm Springs, Indio in recent years as cats come down off the mountain. These big cats are fairly comfortable living in close proximity to us and pose little danger to humans reports of attacks on humans are rare. However, bobcats will fight if they are cornered. The real concern with these beauties is that they pose a risk to family pets such as dogs, smaller cats and rabbits. Bobcats will also prey on squirrels, chipmunks and other small mammals and birds, which is why they are often seen close to active bird feeders during winter months. According to experts, if you ever encounter a bobcat in your backyard or around your neighborhood, there’s no need to panic because they will likely be shy with humans. Zoo officials generally agree to just enjoy and appreciate these elegant ones. High Desert: Big Bear Alpine Zoo, 909-5841299 or bigbearzoo.com. California black bears Bears may not be as normal a sight in the desert as coyotes or bobcats, but they do live in parts of the desert and wander into others. Drought, wildfires and

STAY SAFE other circumstances are making them more common in our neighborhoods. California black bears have been expanding their territory since the grizzly bear was decimated in this state. They will occasionally move through Joshua Tree National Park and some make their home in Morongo Valley and the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve. Others will wander down the foothills surrounding Yucca Valley. They’ve also been spotted in Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs. To stay safe, do what you do already to prevent contact with other large predators: Keep your trash secured, clean up after cooking or eating outdoors and don’t approach a bear. You shouldn’t leave out food for bears. If they damage property or hurt pets or people, they may be captured and killed by Fish & Wildlife. Fully grown, California black bears may stand about 3.5 feet tall on all fours and weigh about 200 pounds. They can run up to 30 mph.

Rattlesnakes The most common rattlesnakes in our Southern California and desert region are the Southern Pacific, red diamond, Western diamondback, sidewinder, Southwestern speckled, and the Mojave green. Venom can paralyze and kill, and fangs can still inject venom even after a snake is believed to be dead. And, they don’t always shake that rattle when preparing to attack. Warm summer and fall months mean

there are more snakes around, out of winter hibernation. Many are active at night, when they hunt and eat rodents, other reptile, and insects. Rattlesnakes linger in tall grass, near woodpiles, around rocks, under garden shrubs and against the sides of houses. They like cool, shady places in summer heat, such as under a lawn chair. When in the wild, humans should wear pants and closed toe shoes. Just like with bees, the best advice is to simply not bother or threaten the snakes and keep a minimum distance of six feet away. Don’t step or reach into hidden places. Don’t ever handle or try to kill a rattlesnake, according to the Riverside County Department of Animal Services. A snake bite can cause nerve and tissue damage and blood-clotting problems. If bitten, don’t attempt first-aid or tourniquets. Do keep the bitten area below the heart, remove all rings and watches that might constrict swelling and head straight to a hospital or emergency room to receive anti-venom immediately. High Desert: San Bernardino County Animal Care & Control, 800-472-5609 or sbcounty.gov. Low Desert: Riverside County Department of Animal Services, 760-343-3644 or rcdas.org. There are hundreds of other species to be found in our desert region, like the Agile kangaroo bat, black-tailed jackrabbit, Costa’s hummingbird, chuckwalla, desert bighorn sheep, greater roadrunner, sandstone night lizard and many more, most all of which are as uninterested in getting as up close and personal with us as we are with them. Most of these are so timid around humans that we rarely even see them. When we do have a sighting, we can enjoy the special visit and the display of nature at its most colorful and wondrous. 2021-2022

BE PREPARED

stay safe during and after an

Earthquake

What to do during an earthquake • Drop, cover and hold on. • Try to protect your head and torso. If you are sitting at a desk or table, get under it. Otherwise, drop wherever you are. • If you are in bed, stay there, curl up and hold on. Protect your head with a pillow. • If you use a wheelchair, try to get under a doorway or into an inside corner, lock the wheels and cover your head with your arms. Remove any items that are not securely attached to the wheelchair. • Stay away from outer walls, windows, fireplaces and hanging objects. • Stay indoors until the shaking stops and you are sure it is safe to exit. • If you are outside, find a clear spot away from buildings, power lines, trees and streetlights. Drop to the ground and stay there until the shaking stops. • If you are in a vehicle, pull over to a clear location and stop. Avoid bridges, overpasses and power lines if possible. Stay inside with your seatbelt fastened until the shaking stops. What to do after an earthquake • If you smell gas, get out of the building and move as far away as possible. • Before you leave any building, check to 52

make sure that there is no debris from the building that could fall on you. • If you are in a vehicle, after the quake stops, drive carefully, avoiding bridges and ramps. • If a power line falls on your vehicle, do not get out. Wait for assistance. How to prepare for an earthquake • Practice: Reduce injury by practicing “Drop, Cover and Hold On” when the ground shakes. • Develop a plan: Develop an emergency plan that includes the name and telephone number of an out-of-area contact; a place where everyone can meet if they are separated after the earthquake; and special provisions for pets, children, seniors and people with special needs. • Get ready: Stockpile at least a three-day supply of water, food, medications and other supplies such as flashlights, batteryoperated portable radios and extra batteries. • Learn first aid: Knowing how to treat cuts, abrasions and other injuries that are not lifethreatening will enable parents and guardians to provide immediate care to their loved ones and allow emergency medical personnel to focus their attention on those with more serious and life-threatening injuries. • Secure your home: Make sure your home is

BE PREPARED bolted to the foundation and water heaters, entertainment centers, computer systems and other objects that could fall and cause injury are secured. Homeowners should also contact their insurance agents to see if earthquake insurance is feasible for them. How to make your house more safe It’s not the Earth’s shaking itself that causes the most injury and harm. Instead, it’s the things that the earthquake puts into motion: the shaking of buildings, structures, and even ordinary household items. Anything that can move, fall, break, or cause a fire can be an earthquake hazard. Here are some tips from the Federal Emergency Management Administration. • Conduct a hazard hunt. Go through your home or facility, room by room, looking for objects or situations that might cause damage or injury. Make an inventory of all items that require attention. • Walk the halls and classrooms. Stand in the center of each room and look all around you: imagine which objects or pieces of furniture might fall over or fly through the air. Bolt down and secure to the wall studs: • water heater • furnace • gas appliances • refrigerator Fasten to wall studs: • bookcases • shelves • tall cabinets • Move heavy objects to lower shelves. • Make sure hallways and exits are clear of objects that might fall and make it difficult to get out of the building. • Brace overhead light fixtures. • Install latches on cabinet doors. • Move beds and cribs away from windows, and lock their wheels if possible. • Move heavy items such as pictures and mirrors away from sleeping and sitting areas. Safety tips from SoCalGas • Know where your gas meter is located and keep a 12-inch or larger adjustable wrench with your emergency supplies, near your building exit or next to your gas meter shutoff valve. Do not store the wrench on the gas meter or other gas piping. • Be prepared to turn off your natural gas meter but only if you smell natural gas, hear the sound of natural gas escaping or see other

A deadly quake and a lifesaving response Before the Landers Earthquake of June 28, 1992, few people outside the Morongo Basin knew this area existed. Afterward, the world knew. At 7.3 magnitude, it was the fifth largest earthquake in California’s history. Beginning at 4:57 a.m., tectonic plates shifted along the faults for 24 seconds and shock waves continued to shake the ground for several more seconds afterward. The quake was preceded by a foreshock two months earlier in Joshua Tree National Monument. In the same way the Joshua Tree quake triggered the Landers quake, the 7.3 main event set off a quake in Big Bear a few hours later. The quake caused one death when a stone chimney collapsed on a 3½-year-old boy who was here with his parents from Massachusetts for a Yucca Valley High School class reunion.

signs of a leak and only if it is safe to do so. • If you turn off gas to the meter, leave it off. Do not turn it back on yourself. Interior gas piping and appliances must be inspected for possible damage before service can be safely restored. • Call SoCalGas to turn the gas back on, relight the pilots and service your appliances. Certain repairs may have to be performed by your plumber or heating contractor. However, only SoCalGas field employees are allowed to turn on the gas to the meter. • Do not ignite a flame or use any electrical appliances, light switches or other devices that can cause a spark until you are sure there are no gas leaks. • Check safety devices, such as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, to ensure that they are functioning properly. • For more natural gas safety information, visit socalgas.com/stay-safe/emergencyinformation/emergency-preparedness. 2021-2022

TRAILS OF THE DESERT

Let’s Hike

Places to stretch your legs in the high and low desert

F

rom austere canyons to lush oases, the desert is home to diverse hiking trails. When you’re headed out for a hike, put safety first. Bring plenty of water (at least one gallon per person per day, but you’ll need more if it’s hot), salty snacks, good hiking shoes, a hat, light and loose-fitting clothes and sunscreen. Plan your hikes for the early morning or evening when it’s cooler. Let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back and tell them to contact authorities if they don’t hear from you.

AMBOY

Amboy Crater This 4.1 round trip hike to an ancient volcano crater through lava field is a moderate hike off of Route 66 near the Mojave National Preserve. If you make it up the steep incline you will see where lava poured out over 24 square miles. Check out the dried lava landscape on Crater Road in Amboy.

CATHEDRAL CITY

Cathedral Canyon Trail An approximate 1,000-foot elevation gain and a few steep inclines gives the trail a moderate rating with little shade. The 3.8-mile trail is used by mountain bikers and hikers. Park along the paved street near the end of Foothill Road.

DESERT HOT SPRINGS

Mission Creek Stonehouse A historic structure tucked away in the lush wetlands of the Mission Creek Preserve. The stonehouse is a remnant of the area’s ranch days and features informational exhibits, as well as restrooms and picnic tables. Hikers with their four-legged friends enjoy the easy 3.2mile round-rip hike, which follows a stream and passes by an enormous Freemont cottonwood tree. 50550 Mission Creek Road.

JOSHUA TREE

Joshua Tree National Park A sweeping array of nature and fitness treks greets guests across the 1,250 square mile breadth

of space, which makes Joshua Tree among the most popular hiking, camping and rock climbing attractions to locals and visitors. For leisurely hikes, check out the 3-mile 49 Palms Oasis hike or the 4-mile Lost Horse Mine and mountain hike. 6554 Park Blvd.

LA QUINTA

Bear Creek Canyon Trail After cruising through a flat, sandy wash for the first 30 minutes, the gain hits all at once around the two-mile mark. But the steep trek through the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountain National Monument is well worth it, and is a prime spot for a picnic. Access trail near the intersection of Calle Tecate and Avenida Madero. Boo Hoff Loop The first half of the 12.1-mile loop leads to views that stretch from the Salton Sea to the San Jacinto Mountains. The 2,574foot gain in elevation challenges experienced hikers, with hardly any shade, poorly marked paths and rocky terrain hikers are advised to exercise extreme caution. Corner of Avenida Bermudas and Calle Tecate, La Quinta. Cove to Lake The first part of the 6.4-mile path is relatively flat, cutting through wideopen sandy terrain at the base of the Southern Santa Rosa Mountains before transitioning to more ups and downs. The path veers away from private property and heads towards Lake Cahuilla. Access the trailhead on Calle Tecate.

MORONGO VALLEY

Canyon Trail This 8.34-mile round trip hike descends gradually from the higher, cooler Mojave Desert down the canyon to the warmer Colorado Desert climate. This trail is a favorite of many local hikers and horseback riders. Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, 11055 East Drive. Desert Willow Trail This moderate .75 mile dirt trail wanderd through open fields of fall-blooming alkali golden-bush, along the edge of hone mesquite thicket, then drops into a desert wash habitat with desert willow, evergreen yerba santa and wild tarragon. Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, 11055 East Drive, Morongo Valley. 2021-2022
