ou don’t have to be a beer lover to get a buzz from this annual frothy festival, but it certainly adds to the fun. This colorful event celebrates micro-brewers, hop heads, cask masters and malsters who have incorporated traditional resources and innovative ideas to re-interpret historic beer categories with unique twists. As a result, there are now more than 150 beer styles, and many will be available for sampling at the festival. Some of the 30 or more craft breweries who will keep the golden goodness flowing all afternoon include Second Chance Brewery, Artifex Brewing Company, Two Roads Brewing, Huyghe Brewery, Local Roots, Jiant, El Segundo Brewing, Sour Cellars, Calidad, Ojo Rojo, On The Mark, Desert Beer Co., Las Palmas Brewing, Bells Brewery, Lagunitas Brewing Company, Claremont Craft Ales, Brewery X, Mumford Brewing, AleSmith Brewing Company, MadeWest Brewing Company, 29 Brews, Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company, La Quinta Brewing Co., Coachella Valley Brewing Co., The Bruery, Pizza Port Brewing, Mother Earth Brewing and more. There will be live music and a barbecue with both vegan and meat options to accompany the beer flavors, which are produced with barley, wheat malt or other fermentable ingredients that enhance (rather than lighten) taste. Anyone who books a room at the Ace Hotel will receive two free tickets to the festival plus a pair of limited-edition beer glasses. For those who stay overnight, the excitement can carry on with time well spent in the Amigo Room or King’s Highway, both onsite at the Ace. A craft brewery or microbrewery is unique because it produces smaller batches of beer and is often independently owned. Even though it’s now a rising star in the alcohol industry, the microbrewing movement began in both the United States and United Kingdom in the 1970s. Craft beer is characterized by plenty of flavor, balance and complexity. The Brewer’s Association even has a seal to certify independent craft breweries. Come alone or with friends and taste for yourself why people are crazy for craft beer. Beer goggles are optional.

Rocky Horror Show at Desert Rose Playhouse keep the cult favorite alive By Alison Elsner Rocky Horror Picture Show Desert Rose Playhouse 611 S. Palm Canyon Drive Palm Springs August 26-September 12 7 p.m. Thursday 8 p.m. Friday & Saturdat 2 p.m. Sunday Tickets $25-$140 @desertroseplayhouse

T

his engaging musical channels the classic, “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” an entertainment film staple experienced by many of us in our teens as a midnight movie. This humorous romp is a titillating tribute to the parody science fiction and horror B movies of the 1930s through to the early 1960s. On a wild and rain-swept lateNovember evening on an empty stretch of road in Ohio, prudish and boringly-innocent young couple Brad Majors and Janet Weiss find themselves stranded. The couple inadvertently encounters transvestite scientist, Dr. Frank-N-Furter,

just in time to partake in the unveiling of his most daring creation: Rocky Horror, a physically perfect muscle man complete with “blond hair and a tan.” Brad, Janet and the audience find themselves in for a night – and maybe a lifetime — of self-discovery. The original music, lyrics and book are by Richard O’Brien. The film is a cult favorite and is still shown in limited release 46 years after its premiere. It is the longestrunning theatrical release in film history. In many cities live amateur shadow-casts dress in character and act out the film as it is being shown.

For the chance of a lifetime, guests can ride in a vintage Warbird such as the T-28 Trojan, C-47 Skytrain, PT-17 Stearman, P51-D Mustang or a T-33 Shooting Star Jet, reinforcing the connection between the machines and people who sacrificed so much in history’s greatest conflicts. It’s a touching and intriguing collection of individuals’ trying to come to grips with the tragedy that was the terrorists’ destruction of the World Trade Center, September 11, 2011. Nelson said of her reason for the play: “What we have to do as a culture is focus on the good that is around us, and represented by the fire service, the selflessness. And if the play can bring our attention to that, and let us share in those emotions, that’ll help us through the grief.” Check out her video on YouTube. It has some readings of the play. “The Guys” kicks off Palm Canyon Theatre’s 2021-2022 season, which will feature 11 full productions, followed by its summer kids’ camp. The new season includes: Del Shores’ “Sordid Lives,” September 24-October 3 “Shrek, The Musical,” October 22-November 7 “This Side of Crazy,” Novmber 18-21 “The Sound of Music,” December 3-19 “Les Miserables,” January 21-February 13 “Palm Springs Getaway,” February 25-March 13 “Cyrano de Bergerac,” March 31-April 3 “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” April 22-May 1 “Into the Woods,” May 13-22

You can buy any 8 shows for $200, four shows, $100, all 11 shows for $275, or Patrons Choice $250 for 10 tickets in any combination. Palm Canyon Theatre is located at 538 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs. For tickets and information, visit palmcanyontheatre.net or call 760-323-5123.

Cathedral Canyon Trail An approximate 1,000-foot elevation gain and a few steep inclines gives the trail a moderate rating with little shade. The 3.8-mile trail is used by mountain bikers and hikers. Park along the paved street near the end of Foothill Road.

Desert Hot Springs Mission Creek Stonehouse A historic structure tucked away in the lush wetlands of the Mission Creek Preserve. The stonehouse is a remnant of the area’s ranch days and features informational exhibits, as well as restrooms and picnic tables. Hikers with their four-legged friends enjoy the easy 3.2mile round-rip hike, which follows a stream and passes by an enormous Freemont cottonwood tree. 50550 Mission Creek Road.

Joshua Tree Joshua Tree National Park A sweeping array of nature and fitness treks greets guests across the 1,250 square mile breadth of space, which makes Joshua Tree among the most popular hiking, camping and rock climbing attractions to locals and visitors. For leisurely hikes, check out the 3-mile 49 Palms Oasis hike or the 4-mile Lost Horse Mine and mountain hike. 6554 Park Blvd.

La Quinta Bear Creek Canyon Trail After cruising through a flat, sandy wash for the first 30 minutes, the gain hits all at once around the two-mile mark. But the steep trek through the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountain National Monument is well worth it, and is a prime spot for a picnic. Access trail near the intersection of Calle Tecate and Avenida Madero. Boo Hoff Loop The first half of the 12.1mile loop leads to views that stretch from the Salton Sea to the San Jacinto Mountains. The 2,574-foot gain in elevation challenges experienced hikers, with hardly any shade, poorly marked paths and rocky terrain hikers are advised to exercise extreme caution. Corner of Avenida Bermudas and Calle Tecate, La Quinta. Cove to Lake The first part of the 6.4mile path is relatively flat, cutting through wide-open sandy terrain at the base of the Southern Santa Rosa Mountains before transitioning to more ups and downs. The path veers away from private property and heads towards Lake Cahuilla. Access the trailhead on Calle Tecate.

Palm Desert Art Smith Trail After one mile of the round-trip 10-mile trek, the sights and sounds of the city of seem to disappear. By mile three, a cluster of palm trees pop up out of nowhere and the trail is surrounded by otherworldly rock formations. Trailhead can be found across from the Santa Rosa San Jacinto National Monument Visitors Center on Highway 74. Bump and Grind Loop A moderate 3 -mile hike scaling the Northern Santa Rosa Mountains, this is one of the most popular outings for hikers, runners and cyclists. The steep trail climbs 960 feet and intersects other routes along the way. Trailhead is behind the Desert Crossings shopping center. The Cross This local landmark is beloved by hikers, bikers and their leashed pups who make the 2.2-mile trek through the lower reaches of the Santa Rosa Mountains. The 689-foot climb feaures a giant lit-up cross with stunning vistas of the valley floor. Parking is available in the unpaved lot off Thrush Road.

Palm Springs Andreas Canyon A scenic foot trail leads through the canyon, passing groves of stately skirted palms, unusual rock formations and the perennial Andreas Creek. This tranquil setting is excellent for photography, bird-watching or a picnic at one of the tables along the trail. 38520 S. Palm Canyon Drive. indian-canyons.com Museum Trail Only a 1.7-mile hike, is a hard uphill hiking test with steep incline and rocky ground. With breathtaking views of the city of Palm Springs unfolding just 10 minutes into the hike, the path levels off at a nice resting point with picnic tables. Trail begins at the back corner of the Palm Springs Art Museum parking lot. Do not park in the museum parking lot.. North Lykken Trail The 2.8 mile moderate hike snakes approximately 1,000 feet up the canyon, where rocky outcrops, boulders and seasonal wildflowers paint a beautiful backdrop. Before returning via the dame route, stop and soak in the views! Trail head is located at the end of Ramon Road in Palm Springs. Park in the unpaved lot. Tahquitz Canyon Home to a spectacular seasonal 60-foot waterfall, rock art, ancient irrigation systems, native wildlife and plants. 38520 South Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs. indian-canyons.com
