he sweltering summer heat in the Coachella Valley demands sweet relief. Fortunately, the fresh, cool air 8,516 feet above Palm Springs will reset your internal thermostat. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway offers an economical summer pass which ensures unlimited access to the pristine wilderness of the Mt. San Jacinto State Park and over 50 miles of hiking trails. Other options at the Mountain Station include two restaurants, a cocktail lounge, the Natural History Museum, viewing of two documentary style movies about the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and the Mount San Jacinto State Park, and several observation decks. The Tram features the world’s largest rotating tram cars, traveling over two-and-onehalf miles along the breathtaking cliffs of Chino Canyon, revealing picturesque vistas of the valley floor below as well as sightings of spectacular flora and fauna. There are two restaurants, Peaks for fine dining and Pines Restaurant for an affordable self-serve alternative. Originally built in 1963, construction was an engineering challenge. Helicopters flew some 23,000 missions without mishap during the 26 months of construction, hauling men and materials to erect the five towers and the 35,000 square foot Mountain Station. The Tramway was modernized in 2000 with new cars and updated facilities. Once at the Mountain Station, visitors descend a concrete pathway to Long Valley which has picnic tables, ranger station, restrooms and several easy trails. Long Valley Discovery Trail takes explorers around a three-quarter mile loop while the one-andone-half mile Desert View Trail leads to a number of scenic overlooks and forest views. More advanced hiking trails include Round Valley (two-and-one-half miles), Wellman’s Divide (one mile from Round Valley), and the prize: San Jacinto Peak, a five-and-onehalf mile hike one way leading to the second highest point in southern California where, on clear days, it is reported that one can see Catalina Island or the glow from Las Vegas at night. Be sure to take plenty of water and check in at the Ranger Station at Long Valley to pick up a $5 wilderness permit.

ne of the most enduring performers in our collective entertainment culture, George Benson has only gotten better with time. The American guitarist, singer, and songwriter began his professional career at the age of 19 as a jazz guitarist. A former child prodigy, Benson first came to prominence in the 1960s, playing soul jazz with Jack McDuff and others. He then launched a successful solo career, alternating between jazz, pop, R&B singing and scat. His album “Breezin’ ” was certified triple-platinum, hitting no. 1 on the Billboard album chart in 1976.

His concerts have remained well attended and he maintains a large following. Benson won 10 Grammy Awards and has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Fans can expect to hear top hits such as “Give Me The Night,” “Love All the Hurt Away,” “Turn Your Love Around,” “Inside Love,” “Lady Love Me,” “20/20,” “Shiver,” “Kisses in the Moonlight” and more. One of his most memorable hits is “Masquerade,” now a jazz standard, penned by Leon Russel on his aforementioned, top selling “Breezin’” album with its eponymous smash hit by the same name.

ulti-platinum selling band Poison will hit the stage, featuring its all-original lineup of Bret Michaels, C.C. DeVille, Bobby Dall and Rikki Rockett. The band’s unparalleled live energy reflects their ground-up roots forged in the club scene. Hits include “Talk Dirty To Me,” “I Won’t Forget You,” “Cry Tough,” “I Want Action,” “Look What The Cat Dragged In,” “Unskinny Bop,” “Something To Believe In” and the No. 1 smash, “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn.” Written by singer/songwriter and frontman Bret Michaels, the latter song would remain atop the pop, rock and country charts for

three months consecutively, becoming a major crossover hit and defining the sound for a new era. The band also scored with the album, “Open Up and Say…Ahh!,” featuring “Fallen Angel,” “Nothin’ But A Good Time” and “Your Mama Don’t Dance.” Throughout the band’s career, blue-eyed heart-throb Michaels has maintained a bold presence on television shows such as “Rock Of Love” and “Celebrity Apprentice,” in which he suffered a subarachnoid brain hemorrhage and underwent heart surgery. Michaels’ spirit continues to soar as he and his bandmates bring us this hot live show.

The summer doldrums for theatre companies gives them time to announce their 2022-2023 Season. Here’s Palm Canyon Theatre’s list of appealing productions: September 2-11 Neil Simon’s “Biloxi Blues,” the second chapter in what is known as the “Eugene trilogy.” September 30-October 16 “Titanic The Musical,” based on the story of the ill-fated ocean liner. May 5-14 “She Loves Me.” This may sound familiar – Amalia and Georg are two shop clerks in a 1930s European perfumery who usually do not see eye to eye, but wind up realizing that they have fallen for each other as “pen pals.” July 7-16 “Hair,” the American tribal love rock musical celebrating the sixties counterculture. Coachella Valley Rep’s 2022-2023 Season is bringing you five Tony Award-Winning Plays: November 8-20 “The Humans,” winner of four Tony Awards, Stephen Karam’s family drama is “an absolute must-see,” according to new Executive Director Stephen Adam Karsten. As things Karam go bump in the night, the angst and anguish of the middle class are shoved into the light in this “uproarious, hopeful and heart-breaking play. Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Follow Alison as she uncovers the secrets through three different ages in her life. This isn’t just a coming-ofage or coming out story, but one that sets out to unravel the many mysteries of childhood through which we can all identify. January 17-29 “Dirty Blonde” by Claudia Shear. This hit comedy garnered five Tony nominations and tells a story that is as unlikely, outrageous and as fascinating as Mae West herself, who said, “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.” February 21-March 5 “Once,” with book by Edna Walsh, music by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, based on the motion picture written and directed by John Carney. This is a love story reminding us how the language of music is universal. Winner of eight Tony Awards, in-

March 28-April 9 “Hand to God” by Robert Askins received five Tony nominations, including Best New Play. Tormented by feelings of lust and loss, an unhappy teenage boy tries to please his mother by performing with a puppet for her church ministry program. However, things get out of hand. Dezart Performs’ 15th Season

Dezart Performs’ Founding Artistic Director Michael Shaw has announced, “We’ve got drama, comedy, sex, music, nudity, The Rapture and New York City trash truck drivers. Our 15th and first truly post COVID season has a lot of variety and a lot of laughs and emotional stimulation”: October 28-November 6 “Choir Boy” by Tarell Alvin McCraney is a drama with music and was a 2019 Tony nominee for Best Michael Shaw Play, winning the 2019 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music in a Play (“The choral music is rich and rousing,” New York Stage Review). “Choir Boy” is a moving story of sexuality, race, hope, gospel music and a young gay man finding his voice. January 13-22 “A Bright New Boise,” a dark comedy written by Samuel D. Hunter, nominated for a 2011 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, winning the 2011 Obie Award for Playwriting. We find ourselves in the bleak, corporate break room of a craft store in Idaho. Will, who has fled his rural hometown after a scandal at his Evangelical church, comes to the Hobby Lobby, not only for employment, but also to rekindle a relationship with brooding teenager Alex, whom he gave up for adoption years before. He works alongside Leroy, his adopted brother and protector, and hapless Anna, a young woman who reads bland fiction but hopes for dramatic endings. As their manager, foul-mouthed Pauline, tries ceaselessly to find order (and profit) in the chaos of small business, these lost souls at Hobby Lobby confront an unyielding world through the beige-tinted impossibility of modern faith. March 3-12 “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Gynecologic Oncology Unit at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center of New York City,” a comedy written by Halley Feiffer. A foul-mouthed twentysomething comedian and a middle-aged man embroiled in a nasty divorce are brought together when their cancer-stricken mothers become roommates in the hospital. The New York Times said, “The play is a deeply felt as its name is long.” April 14-23 “The Garbologists,” a new comedy/drama written by Lindsay Joelle, chronicles a white, conservative New York City sanitation worker and a Black Ivy-educated single mother, thrown together in a cab of a NYC garbage truck. It’s a hopeful story about finding common ground in uncommon times.
