his beloved musical has become part of the fabric of our culture and history, with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. It is based on the 1949 memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Set in Austria in 1938 on the eve of the Anschluss, the musical tells the story of Maria, governess to a large family, who is deciding whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children and eventually their widowed father, Captain von Trapp. He is or-

dered to accept a commission in the German Navy, but he opposes the Nazis. He and Maria decide to flee Austria with the children. The 1965 film musical starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, and it won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Many songs from the musical have become standards, such as “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Do-Re-Mi” and the title song “The Sound of Music.” Audiences continue to adore the story which has taken on even more meaning over the decades.

Travel the world in an afternoon with Art on Main Street in Old Town La Quinta

T

reat yourself to a day of cultural enchantment and live music at Art on Main Street with over 70 artists showing and selling their paintings, jewelry, mixed media, photography, ceramics, glass, woodwork, textiles, sculptures and more. This outdoor art market is an Old Town tradition, set amidst Main Street’s charming cafés and boutiques. Past collections have included works by Robert Weil, Dean Mayo, Felica and Michelle Waller and many others. Much of the inspiration for the art on display has an international flair, with local impressionist Diane McClary exquisitely capturing desert color and light in

her landscapes and Leslee Adams embracing Southwest and desert style in bold and bright watercolors. Many artists hail from southern California while others are originally from foreign countries, expressing a diverse world view and a global influence. Other artisans might include photographer and world-traveler, Laurent Martres, jewelry designer Victor Yurivilca from Peru and Itai Chazan from Israel, who recently opened Meyave Gallery on Main Street and creates contemporary and African art with raw, imported stone in collaboration with Zimbabwe artists. Come for the art and stay for the day!

Like the classic play, a perennial favorite, “A Christmas Carol – The Musical” is adapted from Dickens’ 1843 novella recounting the classic story about mean-spirited Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation on Christmas Eve as he is visited by the ghost of his old business partner and the Christmas spirits. “Each of Dickens’ iconic characters is brought to life with music, dancing and spectacle,” said Director Lisa Goldberg, helming her first main stage feature. “It’s not a typical stage production or reading by any means.” The cast consists of 27 musical theatre veterans from past Theatre 29 productions, as well as some new performers from the Morongo Basin Communities, including some talented local children playing some of the most cherished roles.
