Fiddler on the Roof
warms the soul with love, laughter and the meaning of tradition By Alison Elsner
O
ne of the all-time classics, “Fiddler on the Roof” takes the stage with a fresh vision of this beloved theatrical masterpiece from Tony winner Joseph Stein and Pulitzer Prize winners Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick. Everyone will want to hum along to “Tradition,” “Sunrise, Sunset,” “If I Were A Rich Man,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” and “To Life (L’Chaim!).” Heartwarming themes center on fathers and daughters, husbands and wives and life, love and laughter. Created by Tony-winning director Bartlett Sher and the team behind “South Pacific,” “The King and I” and 2017 Tony-winning Best Play “Oslo,” the show features a talented cast, lavish orchestra and stunning movement and dance from Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter, based on original staging by Jerome Robbins, Set in Imperial Russia around 1905, the tale is based on “Tevye and his Daughters” (or “Tevye the Dairyman”) and other tales by Sholem Aleichem. Tevye, a milkman in the village of Anatevka, attempts to maintain his Jewish traditions as outside influences encroach upon his family’s lives. He must cope with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters who wish to marry for love. An edict of the Tsar eventually evicts the Jews from their village. The original Broadway production of the show, which opened in 1964, had the first musical theatre run in history to surpass 3,000 performances. It held the record for the longest-running Broadway musical for almost 10 years prior to “Grease,” and it won nine Tony Awards, including best musical, score, book, direction and choreography. It spawned five Broadway revivals and a highly successful 1971 film adaptation. Interesting trivia: The producers considered naming the musical “Tevye”, before landing on a title suggested by various paintings by Marc Chagall including “Green Violinist” (1924), “Le Mort” (1924) and “The Fiddler” (1912) that also inspired the original set design. “Fiddler on the Roof” will bring a sense of nostalgia to those who remember earlier productions and will introduce a new generation to the uplifting celebration that raises its cup to joy! To love! To life!

et ready to chuckle, giggle and guffaw in this all-new experience, where Steve Solomon takes us back to his baby years with his twin sister right up to the present. You’ll meet Uncle Willie, Stuttering Cousin Bob, Demented Cousin Kenny, Steve’s new therapist, Cousin Sal (and Sal’s parole officer), Solomon’s mom, his dad and a myriad of astounding characters we know, love and tolerate from our own families. Each one is brought to life by Solomon using his gift for creating voices, dialects and wacky sound effects that only add to the hilarity of each story.
Solomon is a native of Brooklyn, New York, specifically the multiethnic neighborhood of Sheepshead Bay. This was the perfect training ground for a dialectician and comedian. After leaving an academic career behind, Solomon turned his attention to his love of entertaining people, saying, “I decided to follow my heart and become an impoverished comedy writer and performer.” The show is a laugh-filled fest of everybody you know and have known — and some you’d want to forget, all brought to life by the comic magic of Steve Solomon.
