COVER FEATURE
Pink Martini Drink in the experience, featuring singers China Forbes & Storm Large
By Alison Elsner
D
rawing inspiration from music all over the world and crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop, the band Pink Martini was founded in 1994 in Portland, Oregon and has now attracted a loyal global fan base. Their diverse repertoire is influenced by Cole Porter and Duke Ellington, Tito Puente and Xavier Cugat, as well as Argentine tango, Brazilian samba, Italian folk, Asian and romantic Hollywood musicals of the 1940s and ’50s. When founder, bandleader and pianist Thomas Lauderdale teamed up with singer China Forbes, they began to write songs together, creating their signature sound and style. Their first song, “Sympathique (Je ne veus pas travailler)” became an overnight sensation in France and was nominated for Song of the Year at France’s Victoires de la Musique Awards. Featuring a dozen musicians with songs in 25 languages, Pink Martini performs its multilingual set on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East, South America and North America. Pink Martini made its European debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997 and has gone on to play with more than 70 orchestras around the world. Pink Martini has sold over three million albums worldwide on their own independent label Heinz Records (named after Lauderdale’s dog). The band released “Hang On Little Tomato” in 2004, “Hey Eugene!” in 2007, “Splendor In The Grass” in 2009 and “Joy to the World” in 2011. In 2016, Pink Martini released its ninth studio album, “Je Dis Oui!,” which features vocals from China Forbes, Storm Large, Ari Shapiro, fashion guru Ikram Goldman, civil rights activist Kathleen Saadat and Rufus Wainwright. In 2018, Pink Martini released a special 20th Anniversary Edition of its first album “Sympathique,” and in 2019, the band collaborated on a new album release, “Hotel Amour,” with the international singing sensation Meow Meow. The band’s spirit celebrates the world’s nationalities, bringing joy as well as a sense of connection. As their sixth studio album reminds us, this is a lively show that will help audiences “Get Happy.”

O
ne of entertainment’s symbols of strength and resiliency, not to mention powerhouse lyrics and soulful tunes, Melissa Etheridge storms the stage for her “One Way Out” tour, based on the nine-track album of the same name which is a collection of songs Etheridge wrote in the late 1980s and early 1990s that are finally being released. Known for her confessional lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals, Etheridge has remained one of America’s favorite female singer-songwriters for more than two decades. Some of her most popular originals include
“Bring Me Some Water,” “No Souvenirs” and “Ain’t It Heavy,” for which she won a Grammy in 1992. Her fourth album, “Yes I Am” (1993) featured the massive hits, “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” a searing song that brought the artist her second Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Performance. Etheridge received the Songwriter of the Year honor at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996. This breast cancer survivor and environmental activist has inspired and empowered fans who can expect a rousing show and new levels of compassion, healing and artistry.

Morongo Valley Canyon Trail This 8.34-mile round trip hike descends gradually from the higher, cooler Mojave Desert down the canyon to the warmer Colorado Desert climate. This trail is a favorite of many local hikers and horseback riders. Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, 11055 East Drive. Yucca Ridge Trail This moderate to difficult .72-mile trail fetures vegetation of the desert scrub, including creosote bush, Mojave yucca, Mormon tea, numerous species of cacti and even club moss clinging to the cool sides of the rock surfaces. View white dikes of aplite intruding into an ancient outcrop of gneiss that is over one billion years old and one of the oldest exposed rock formations in California.
