Steve

Martin & Martin Short Showcase rapid-fire jokes and irreplaceable chemistry

By Alison Elsner

T

his show from two of the most prolific and influential funny men of the past century reframes the comedy form in unexpected and profound ways. Their humor is often subversive, but it is always a joyous selfdeprecating romp from two comedy masters. The jokes come off at rapid-fire pace as they mock Hollywood and the fickle nature of celebrity, but the comedy truly soars when they lovingly (and relentlessly) roast each other with unique chemistry and impeccable timing. Long before their most recent “Only Murders in the Building,” a 2021 Hulu film, Martin and Short worked together in the films “Three Amigos!” (1986), “Father of the Bride” (1991), and “Father of the Bride Part II” (1995). They also both voiced characters in the 1998 animated film “The Prince of Egypt.” They started touring together in 2015 for their first live show, “A Very Stupid Conversation.” Steve Martin of “A Wild and Crazy Guy” fame is an actor, comedian, writer, producer, and musician. He has won five Grammy Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, and was awarded an Honorary Academy Award at the Academy’s 5th Annual Governors Awards in 2013. In 2004, Comedy Central ranked Steve Martin at sixth place in a list of the 100 greatest stand-up comics. Martin Short hails from Canada and is an actor, comedian, singer, and writer. He is known for his work on the television programs SCTV and Saturday Night Live. He has starred in comedy films such as “Innerspace” (1987), “Three Fugitives” (1989), “Captain Ron” (1992), “Clifford” (1994), “Mars Attacks!” (1996), “Jungle 2 Jungle” (1997), and “The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause” (2006). Short created the characters Jiminy Glick and Ed Grimley. He earned a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Critics Choice Television Award nomination for his work in the Hulu comedy series “Only Murders in the Building.” Promising a bit of music, plenty of new sketches, and tons of laughs, the duo’s new show is a delight for comedy afficionados and casual fans alike.

et ready to rock it out with Puddle of Mudd on Steroids with Steel Rod. Said to be influenced by Nirvana and with a vibe similar to Limp Biskit, Alice in Chains and Staind, Puddle of Mudd was formed in Kansas City, Missouri in 1992. The band has sold over seven million albums with a string of No. 1 mainstream rock singles in the U.S. Their major-label debut “Come Clean” has sold over five million copies. They have released an independent album and five studio albums, their latest being “Welcome to Galvania” in September 2019. Vocalist and

guitarist Wes Scantlin remains the consistent member throughout the band’s history, known for his feisty personality on stage and off. Considered post-grunge, nu metal, hard rock and alternative metal, the band sounds even better at the outdoor Rock Yard, an outdoor concert venue set in amphitheaterstyle. Always live and always free, passionate fans will be able to enjoy new beer and drink specials as well as head inside to one of Fantasy Springs’ many restaurants before, during or after the show. Must be 18 or older.

CURTAIN TIME

Discover where the curtains will rise this month By Gary Walker

C

oachella Valley Rep (CVRep) is providing some first class June entertainment: 7 p.m., Thursday, June 9: “A Tribute to Lalo Guerrero, The Father of Chicano Music,” presented by his sons, Dan and Mark, in a celebration of his life and legacy. A long-time resident of Cathedral City, several of his original songs are in the canon of Mexican music. He composed in several genres, including swing, R&B, salsa, norteno, mambo, rock and roll, jazz and blues. His earliest Pachuco compositions of the 1940s and 1950s were the basis of the Luis Valdez stage musical and film “Zoot Suit,” starring Edward James Olmos and were based on the real anti-zoot suiter riots and infamous separate Pachuco murder trial in Los Angeles. Early in his career, prior to WWII, he primarily played songs of Mexican origin, and not because they were favorite songs to play. “They couldn’t conceive of a Mexican, especially one who looks as Indian as I do, sitting up there and singing Bing Crosby songs. So naturally the Anglos got the jobs…I reverted to singing Mexican music.” His statue stands in Cathedral City, and I recommend you read the entirety of his fantastic career on Wikipedia to understand how much he influenced Cesar Chavez and his movement: “Lalo has chronicled the events of Hispanics in this country a lot better than anyone.” He also made major contributions to Mexican-American women’s rights, receiving many awards and commendations, includ-
