ancy Wilson is celebrated as a seminal musician in rock ‘n’ roll history. A guitar virtuoso from the age of 9, Wilson (and her sister Ann Wilson) have led the multi-platinum rock group, Heart, who have sold upwards of 35 million albums. Wilson is revered as an ingenious guitar player, blending elements of flamenco and classical guitar with hard rock, and she’s also a gifted vocalist as can be heard on Heart’s first Number One hit, “These Dreams.” As a songwriter, she has co-written a collection of indelible songs that has earned its way into the classic rock canon (“Magic Man,” “Crazy on You,” “Barracuda,” “Straight On”). In 2013, Heart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Heart’s debut album, “Dreamboat Annie,” was followed by “Little Queen” in 1977 which reached number 11 on the Billboard charts. The band’s third album, “Magazine,” was released pre-emptively with unfinished tracks and was later recalled. The group’s fourth release, “Dog & Butterfly,” was written over the course of a single day and released in 1978, selling a million copies within the first month and going platinum, the band’s fourth million-selling album. Heart’s fifth album, “Bébé le Strange,” was released on Valentine’s Day 1980. The band’s sixth album, “Private Audition,” was released in June 1982 and sold only 400,000 copies; it peaked at number 25 on Billboard. Next up was “Heart,” followed by “Bad Animals,” “Desire Walks On” and even a Christmas album. In total, Heart has released around 18 albums as a group, and in 2019, Nancy Wilson released her own solo album, “You and Me.” Wilson has also built a successful career as a film composer, including scores for the Cameron Crowe (now her ex-husband) films “Say Anything…,” “Almost Famous,” “Vanilla Sky” and “Elizabethtown.” During an era when females in rock and roll were scarce, Nancy Wilson carved out a place for women to front rock bands and dominate on stage. Her icon status and high energy performance make this show a must-see.

T

he band may have gone through some changes over the years, but the appeal of their unique “Texican Rock” sound has not faded. Their style combines elements of rock and roll, Texas blues, brown-eyed soul, country, and Tejano. The three brothers, Henry (guitar, vocals), Jojo (bass, vocals), and Ringo (drums, vocals) Garza had a smash top debut single, “Heaven,” which was a Number One hit on the Billboard adult contemporary chart and reached the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2004. They released an EP, “1969” in 2009, paying hom-

age to the 40th anniversary of the titular year with covers of Santana’s “Evil Ways,” The Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues,” “Blind Faith’s version of Buddy Holly’s “Well All Right,” The Beatles’ “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window”, and Tony Joe White’s “Polk Salad Annie.” Three additional albums were released, including, “Keep On Giving: Acoustic Live!,” “Rockpango,” and their newest release, “Revelation” in 2014. Henry Garza says, “We’re all about having a good time, but we also make an effort to write about subjects that matter. It comes from a bigger source than ourselves.”

The Carol Burnett Show

Desert Theaterworks recreates some of the best sketches from the classic television program onstage

By Crystal Harrell

T

he Carol Burnett Show ran for 11 years and is known as one of the most brilliant television shows of all time. Now audiences will get the opportunity to see some of the best classic comedy sketches from the program recreated for the stage. Desert Theaterworks will be performing “The Carol Burnett Show Live on Stage” from July 10-31 at the Indio Performing Arts Center. The classic show will be performed by some of Desert Theaterworks’ favorite performers. Sketches will include The Old Folks Molly and Bert, Alice Portnoy, the soap opera parody “As the Stomach Turns”, movie and commercial parodies, and many more. “The classic sketches Carol made famous bring such great memories of good old fashioned wholesome comedy. My family looked forward to her show on TV every week. Bringing those famous characters to life on stage is such a joy. The fantastic cast we’ve assembled do this classic material justice so be prepared to laugh out loud. If you’ve never seen a Carol Burnett show sketch, you’re in for a treat, too, as this kind of humor never grows old,” stated Director Rebecca McWilliams. “The Carol Burnett Show Live on Stage” will be performed as a Sunday Matinee at 2 p.m. with a runtime of two hours including a 15-minute intermission. For more information or to buy tickets online, visit dtworks.org. The box office is also open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Call 760-980-1455 for ticket information.
