The Magic of Lights Illuminates valley nights with dazzling drive-through experience By Alison Elsner

L

ights make the holidays more special, and that’s especially true with the Magic of Lights. This eye-popping production debuts this year, making the season brighter and more colorful. The Empire Polo Club will be transformed into a vibrant drive-through event, featuring dozens of displays, illuminated canopies and digital animation, all constructed with millions of individual LED lights to create a memorable holiday experience. The event is structured with one-price per carload, affordable for families and all ages. Inside the comfort of their own vehicle, guests will enjoy Magic of Lights’ classic holiday favorites including Winter Wonderland, the 12 Days of Christmas, Toyland, Festive Elves and Reindeer Road. In addition to the 200-foot long Enchanting Tunnel of Lights, there will also be three other brand-new tunnels including the Blizzard Light Tunnel, the Snowflake Tunnel and the Candy Cane Light Tunnel. Other brand-new displays include the 32foot tall, animated Mattel’s Waving Christmas

Barbie, Prehistoric Christmas featuring life sized dinosaurs greeting guests and Bigfoot Monster Trucks. Created with over two million sparkling lights, Magic of Lights is intended to be a nostalgic and festive event that may become the Coachella Valley’s next annual tradition. Produced by Family Entertainment Holdings, LLC, the event will exhibit 12.6 miles of light cord and 3,750 staff hours dedicated to each production. The steel displays are designed, bent, cut and welded into 800 frames that are combined in different configurations to create the giant winter holiday scenes. Each frame of each scene is designed using the latest CAD technology and hand built in-house from 15 pages of design specifications. Every show uses about 10 miles of steel to build the displays and 10 miles of LED lighting installed inside the displays. There are 10 different colors of LED bulbs used in the shows. The event accommodates various sizes of vehicles (at different pricing levels-please check website), and guests are asked to stay in their vehicles. No passengers are allowed in the back of truck beds. It’s time to light up the night!

W

ith a collection of wellknown and original songs, “Palm Springs Getaway” at Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT) transports audiences from the early desert landscape to the vibrant and inclusive community people know and love today – and every decade in between. Featuring glimpses of history, icons and celebrities who made Palm Springs famous, the show begins in Hollywood in the 1930s with mobsters and a fortuneteller who lead the protagonists to visit the “playground of the stars” where they set off on a time-jumping adventure reminiscent of the lighthearted, screwball

comedy films of the 1930s and 40s. The fast-paced farce is filled with physical comedy and campy energy. It features distinct music performed by a four-piece band and era-specific dance styles plus historic photographs and video projected as the backdrop. The show is based on an original book by Cara Van Dijk with original direction and choreography by Se Layne. This season’s revised production incorporates additional material by Eric Stein-Steele and Layne. Audiences will be ushered down memory lane as they are treated to a holiday edition as well as a new year’s 2023 edition during January.

O

ne of La Quinta’s signature events, Art on Main Street enlightens visitors with a day of cultural enchantment and live music with over 100 artists showing their paintings, jewelry, mixed media, photography, ceramics, glass, woodwork, textiles, sculptures and more. This outdoor art market is an Old Town tradition, set amidst Main Street’s charming cafés and boutiques. Featured artists will include Laurent Martres, Robert Weil, Kathy Caldwell and other talents. Past collections have showcased the work of Paul Nzalamba, a Ugandan native known for his exotic and rhythmic use of vibrant color and form. His

batik paintings express both his cultural heritage and his personal experiences that depict scenes from his native Africa as well as universally human themes of family, relationships, celebration and learning. Many artists have their workshops in southern California while others are originally from foreign countries, sharing a diverse world view. Expressions often include works from local impressionists who capture color and light in their landscapes as well as high energy works embracing Southwest and desert style in bold and bright watercolors. Artworks are available for browsing as well as purchasing.

he Coachella Valley’s newest sports attraction is bringing out foam fingers and logo jerseys all over. The Coachella Valley Firebirds, the desert’s own ice hockey expansion team and minor league affiliate of the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Seattle Kraken, has four home games scheduled for December at the sparkling new Acrisure Arena, the team’s home arena. Opponents will include the Tucson Roadrunners (December 18 and 20), Henderson Silver Nights (December 23), and Ontario Reign (December 28). Acrisure Arena features 300,000 square feet available

for Firebirds games as well as major entertainment including Maroon 5, Lizzo, The Doobie Brothers and more. The deluxe arena offers 20 executive suites cantilevered over the lower seating bowl and loft clubs with private, premium club spaces serving Palm Springs craft beers. The AHL Firebirds takes its inspiration as a spiritual descendant of the Kraken, with the mythical firebird rising out of the flames of the desert to soar high above. The Firebirds and their parent team, the Seattle Kraken, even have a retail store for game swag located on El Paseo at San Pablo Avenue in Palm Desert.
