he City of Murals, aka Indio, is full of color in so many ways. Second Saturdays simply enhance the vibrancy with a once monthly, free community concert series for all ages. Located in downtown Indio in a safe, enclosed, “outdoor living room,” visitors can enjoy family activities, local food vendors and craft beer. The main draw is always a performance, and in September that means Groove Squad with DJ Gemini Nikki. Dress for a warm summer night and be prepared for the entire family to get dancing to the funk, R&B, soul

and Motown sounds of this six-member, high-energy band – think Sly Stone or Tower of Power. Food and drink options (and sponsors) include treats like Smokey Lips BBQ, Popping Off Pies, The Desert Patisserie, Straight & Marrow Vietnamese Street Food, Ruberry Salsa, Outside the Masa, Nick’s Pizza, DJ’s Louisiana Kitchen, BuzzBox, Perfect Pint and La Quinta Brewing Co. Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs and/or blankets, and a seating area with picnic and wine barrel tables are also on site. This is what memories are made of!

his dream team performance pairs two of the wittiest, most astute modern-day observers of human behavior and top comedic stars. Known for his scene stealing abilities, actor, producer, writer and comedian Ken Jeong established himself in his feature film debut playing the doctor in “Knocked Up” in 2007. Jeong has starred in memorable movie roles such as the mobster in “The Hangover” and in “Crazy Rich Asians.” Jeong is seen as a judge on the FOX television hit celebrity reality singing competition “The Masked Singer.”

Joel McHale is associated with his roles hosting “The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale” on Netflix as well as E!Network’s “The Soup,” which wrapped its 12th season in 2015, in which he satirized pop culture. He is also well known for his starring role on the hit comedy series “Community.” He can currently be seen in season two of the DC Universe series “Stargirl” on the CW and on “Queenpins.” The two funnymen have a proven chemistry together, having co-hosted FOX’s New Years Eve special in 2020. Headed by lead singer and front man Pat Monahan, the band originates from San Francisco and has gone through a few changes in band members, but their mainstream success prevails. The single won two Grammy Awards in 2002, and the album was certified double platinum. Train’s third studio album in 2003, “My Private Nation,” was cer-

tified platinum in the U.S. with the hit “Calling All Angels.” In 2006, they released their fourth album, “For Me, It’s You.” Other hits have included “Hey, Soul Sister,” “If It’s Love,” “Marry Me,” “Mermaid,” “Save Me San Francisco,” and “Drive By,” the lead single off of Train’s sixth studio album, released worldwide in early 2021 and which peaked at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100. CURTAIN TIME

Discover where the curtains will rise this month By Gary Walker

P

alm Canyon Theatre (PCT) opens its new season Sept. 2-11 with Neil Simon’s popular “Biloxi Blues,” a thought-provoking, coming-of-age story that deals with serious social, racial and ethnic issues told with a mix of humor. The semi-autobiographical play follows a young Army recruit, Eugene Morris (Fabrizio Ibanez), as he travels from Brooklyn to Biloxi, Mississippi, for boot camp where he is prepared to ship off to the front lines during WWII. On his quest to find love, achieve fame and attain his adulthood, Eugene is joined by a diverse band of talented recruits played by Samuel David, Matthew Pichler, Sebastian Reda, Frank Barrera and Ben Van Dijk. Also in the cast are Richard Marlow, Erika Aleman, and Katelyn Compton. Ralph Strangis directs. NEXT SHOW: September 30-Oct 16: “Titanic The Musical,” based on the story of the ill-fated ocean liner.

DTW’s “Nuptials”

Desert TheatreWorks goes south of the Dixie for its next production, “Southern Fried Nuptials,” September 9-25, at the Indio Performing Arts Center (IPAC) in Indio. It’s been a rough year for Attie VanLeer and Harline Frye. Their engagement has been off and on “more times than a drunk frat boy on a mechanical bull.” Half the town has been invited, the dress is fitted, the flowers have been ordered and the gifts are piling up in the living room. So why does Harline have cold feet? Will they or won’t they? That’s the big question in “Southern Fried Nuptials,” the hilarious sequel to Osborne and Eppler’s hit comedy “Southern Fried Funeral.” The cast includes Daniela Ryan, David Brooks, Shirley LeMaster, Katrina Dixon, Kevin Mann, Rebecca Hertsgaard, Renee Poignard, Raul Valenzuela, Laura Ortega, Herb Schwartz and Matt Yenesel. Lance Phillips directs. Curtain Time: “Southern Fried Nuptials,” September 9-25, Indio Performing Arts Center, 45175 Fargo St., Indio.
