Shania Twain

Country Queen of Pop brings verve and versatility to her rousing stage show

rammy Award-winning legend and the best-selling female artist in country music history Shania Twain is bringing her global 49-date tour to the desert, with special guest Hailey Whitters. The tour is in support of Twain’s new album, “Queen of Me,” which was released in February of this year.

After gaining traction with her music is the 1980s, Twain has continued to release top selling albums with singles including “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?,”

“Any Man of Mine” (which earned her a Grammy award in 1995), “The Woman in Me (Needs the Man in You),” “(If You’re Not in It for Love) I’m Outta Here!.” Love Gets Me Every Time.” That Don’t Impress Me Much,” “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!,” and “I’m Gonna Getcha Good!” among others. Already charting from her new album “Queen of Me” are the songs, ““Waking Up Dreaming” and “Giddy Up!”

Originally from Canada, Twain is credited for being the first of many country artists to cross over into pop music. Early on, critics found her threatening for eventually neutralizing their critiques by becoming a much-adored idol for men, women and the LGBTQ community. She has sold over 100 million records, and “Billboard” named her as the leader of the ‘90s country-pop crossover stars.

After a hiatus, Twain returned to performing in 2011 followed by an exclusive concert residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, “Shania: Still the One,” which ran until 2014. Twain released her first studio album in 15 years in 2017, “Now,” and embarked on the Now Tour in 2018. In 2019, she started her second Las Vegas residency, “Let’s Go!” at the Zappos Theater.

Twain has received five Grammy Awards, two World Music Awards, 39 BMI Songwriter Awards, stars on Canada’s Walk of Fame and the Hollywood Walk of Fame and inductions into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. According to the RIAA she is the sixth best-selling female artist in the United States.

Lewis finds success as a country music star, moving audiences with powerful tunes

Country fans should get their boots out of the closet in preparation for Aaron Lewis, who will soon hit the stage. In 2010, Lewis made the leap from nu metal band founding member of Staind to a solo career in country music, showcasing his talent as lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist. His debut EP, “Town Line,” was released in 2011. Lewis’s first full-length solo release, “The Road,” was released by Blaster Records in 2012.

Fans can likely expect to hear some of his country chart toppers, including “Country Boy” (which

he recorded with George Jones and Charlie Daniels), “Endless Summer,” “Forever,” “Granddaddy’s Gun,” “That Ain’t Country,” and “Am I the Only One,” this last track which is off his fourth solo album, “Frayed at Both Ends,” released in early 2022. Lewis was born in a log cabin. He said in a July 2011 interview that he was introduced to country music as a child by his grandfather, but his interest was rekindled when he toured with fellow rock turned occasional country singer Kid Rock. His music often focuses on social themes and perspectives.

Joshua Tree Music Festival proves that music is the soul of life

This magical weekend is filled with live music experiences and workshops that will inspire the soul along with activities and attractions that create a friendly, familial spirit. Guests will find themselves immersed in a powerhouse of passionate creativity, community empowerment and arts education against sweeping views of Joshua Tree National Park and the Copper Mountains.

Over 30 musical artists will include Balkan Bump, My Baby, Dub Inc, Adam Freeland, Frazey Ford, Leyla McCalla, Rainbow Girls and so many more. In between performances, guests can take part in tea ceremonies, AA meetings and medi-

tation. The Om Zone will feature Qi Gong, sound healing and yoga by a shaded lake, and the healing zone offers massage, tarot readings, and even ancient practices of shamanism and reiki.

Numerous visual artists will be on hand along with vendors serving up pancakes to pizza and selling crafts, sustainable clothing, accessories and gifts. Members of the LGBTQ community will feel at home here, with drag, queer and trans art, performance, skills-share, racial justice talks and youth and local resources. Kids are welcome too, with interactive activities, pop-up performances and playshops.

Looking for a way to spend time with your family and friends while enjoying great local music and food? Then check out Second Saturdays in Indio — where its Center Stage features a free community concert series for all ages located downtown in a safe, fenced-in, “outdoor living room” off Smurr, Miles and Indio boulevard. Enjoy family activities, local food vendors and craft beer.

Attendees are encouraged to come dressed for the weather and the themed occasion. Bring your friends and family and come on downtown on May 13 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., where Forward Motion will be performing Top 40s, funk, dance, and R&B.

The city of Indio will have new tables for Center Stage events available, created by Indio’s public works team and painted by local artists from downtown’s Coachella Valley Art Center.

Indio City Council announced Center Stage events as part of its efforts to enliven the downtown area late last year, and offered a soft opening of the series in January. Indio kicked off its “Take Center Stage” free, monthly events with a country night set to include music from The Sarah Winchester Band, DJ/emcee Big John Miller, line dancing instruction, a “walk-about” area, cornhole tournament, tailgate party games, kids activities, plus a barbecue and local brews and sweets for purchase.

This month’s featured food trucks for the event will be from Nick’s Pizza, Smokey Lips BBQ and Ruberry Salsa will have food for purchase. The Desert Patisserie will also be selling desserts and a mobile taproom from La Quinta Brewing Co. will offer drinks for those over 21.

Center Stage will also feature free activities for adults and children, such as corn hole from the Desert 4 Baggers and tailgate party games like giant Jenga. Those planning to attend are advised to dress for the weather, wear proper shoes for the uneven grass surface, and to take blankets or lawn chairs for added comfort. Discover where the curtains will rise this month

Palm Canyon Theatre is holding an open call for its 2023-2024 season. Auditions on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. are open to people of all experience levels.

Actors of various ages are needed for the season’s lineup, which includes “Brigadoon,” “Elf the Musical,” “Steel Magnolias,” Rent,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Sordid Lives,” Something Rotten,“ “Boys in the Band” and “Light in the Piazza.”

Performers are asked to prepare one uptempo song and one ballad. A piano accompanist is available, but you can bring your own music on CD or smartphone. Monologues should be under two minutes.

Those auditioning are also asked to bring a headshot and resume or email both to boxof fice@palmcanyontheatreonline.info.

West Coast rap legend brings chart-topping hits to Fantasy Springs Resort Casino

Iconic rapper Ice Cube will bring his chart-topping hits to the Special Events Center at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino on Friday, May 19, at 8 p.m. Each ticket of this star-studded performance includes 10 dollars in free Slot Play.

Ice Cube’s lyrics on N.W.A’s 1988 album “Straight Outta Compton” contributed to gangsta rap’s widespread popularity, and his political rap solo albums “AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted” (1990), “Death Certificate “(1991), and “The Predator” (1992) were all critically and commercially successful. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of N.W.A in 2016.

A native of Los Angeles, Ice Cube formed his first rap group called C.I.A. in 1986. In 1987, with Eazy-E and Dr. Dre, he formed the pioneering gangsta rap group N.W.A. As its lead rapper, he wrote some of Dre’s and most of Eazy’s lyrics on “Straight Outta Compton,” a landmark album that shaped West Coast hip hop’s early identity and helped differentiate it from East Coast rap.

Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree National Park A sweeping array of nature and fitness treks greets guests across the 1,250 square mile breadth of space, which makes Joshua Tree among the most popular hiking, camping and rock climbing attractions to locals and visitors. La Quinta

Bear Creek Canyon Trail After cruising through a flat, sandy wash for the first 30 minutes, the gain hits all at once around the two-mile mark. But the steep trek through the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountain National Monument is well worth it, and is a prime spot for a picnic. Access trail near the intersection of Calle Tecate and Avenida Madero.

Cove to Lake The first part of the 6.4-mile path is relatively flat, cutting through wideopen sandy terrain at the base of the Southern Santa Rosa Mountains before transitioning to more ups and downs. The path veers away from private property and heads towards Lake Cahuilla. Access the trailhead on Calle Tecate.

Morongo Valley

Canyon Trail This 8.34-mile round trip hike descends gradually from the higher, cooler Mojave Desert down the canyon to the warmer Colorado Desert climate. This trail is a favorite of many local hikers and horseback riders. Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, 11055 East Drive.

Yucca Ridge Trail This moderate to difficult .72-mile trail fetures vegetation of the desert scrub, including creosote bush, Mojave yucca,

Mormon tea, numerous species of cacti and even club moss clinging to the cool sides of the rock surfaces. View white dikes of aplite intruding into an ancient outcrop of gneiss that is over one billion years old and one of the oldest exposed rock formations in California. Palm Desert

Art Smith Trail After one mile of the roundtrip 10-mile trek, the sights and sounds of the city of seem to disappear. By mile three, a cluster of palm trees pop up out of nowhere and the trail is surrounded by otherworldly rock formations. Trailhead can be found across from the Santa Rosa San Jacinto National Monument Visitors Center on Highway 74.

Bump and Grind Loop A moderate 3 -mile hike scaling the Northern Santa Rosa Mountains, this is one of the most popular outings for hikers, runners and cyclists. The steep trail climbs 960 feet and intersects other routes along the way. Trailhead is behind the Desert Crossings shopping center.

The Cross This local landmark is beloved by hikers, bikers and their leashed pups who make the 2.2-mile trek through the lower reaches of the Santa Rosa Mountains. The 689-foot climb feaures a giant lit-up cross with stunning vistas of the valley floor. Parking is available in the unpaved lot off Thrush Road.

Andreas Canyon A scenic foot trail leads through the canyon, passing groves of stately skirted palms, unusual rock formations and the perennial Andreas Creek. Museum Trail Only a 1.7-mile hike, is a hard uphill hiking test with steep incline and rocky ground. With breathtaking views of the city of Palm Springs unfolding just 10 minutes into the hike, the path levels off at a nice resting point with picnic tables. Trail begins at the back corner of the Palm Springs Art Museum parking lot. Do not park in the museum parking lot.

Thousand Palms

Coachella Valley Preserve The 17,000 acre site is home to 25 miles of hiking trails and several palm oasis that stay full of water thanks to water seeping out of the San Andreas Fault.
