Chill, explore and invigorate among the pines with a summer pass

During the sizzling hot desert summer, the Palm Springs Tram summer pass is the perfect escape for fresh mountain air and cool breezes. The world’s largest rotating tram cars travel over 2.5 miles along the breathtaking cliffs of Chino Canyon up into untouched wilderness. During the 10-minute journey, tram cars rotate slowly, offering picturesque vistas. Once at the Mountain Station, an elevation of 8,516 feet, there are two restaurants (Peaks for fine dining and Pines Café for cafeteria style snacks), Lookout Lounge for refreshing cocktails, observation decks, a natural history museum, two documentary theaters, a gift shop and over 50 miles of hiking trails.

The temperature at the top is approximately 30 degrees cooler than on the desert floor below. Within Mt. San Jacinto State Park, there are 14,000 acres of pristine wilderness. All trails are accessed by exiting the Mountain Station and descending a concrete pathway to Long Valley, with picnic tables, a ranger station, flush toilets, trails and free guided nature walks.

First responders will receive free admission during June, and up to four of their guests will receive a 25 percent Tram fare discount. Through October 8, there will be a Class and Field Program with 24 programs covering natural history and hiking trail topics.

Hikes include the Long Valley Discovery Trail, following nature trail posts around a three-quarter mile loop, and the moderately strenuous Desert View Trail at 1.5 miles leads to scenic overlooks. The picturesque Round Valley trail leads higher up into the mountains. The truly adventurous can contemplate Wellman’s Divide with a 600-foot elevation gain as well as the big prize, San Jacinto Peak, a 5.5 mile hike one way with views of Catalina Island.

The summer pass includes unlimited Tram admissions, a 10 percent discount on additional Tram admissions (limit four per passholder), a 10 percent discount at Peaks Restaurant or Pines Café and unlimited free parking.

If you listen closely, you will hear coyotes howling in the background above the cacophony of the Clark’s Nutcrackers.

One of the most acclaimed short film showcases in the world will again feature in-person film screenings at the Camelot Theatres along with the ShortFest Forum that includes panels by industry representatives and special guests.

Each ShortFest screening is comprised of a program with four to nine short films. Films vary in genre, subject and style, and question and answer sessions with attending filmmakers occur after each program. Most films are less than 30 minutes long.

Film titles and schedules will be announced in early June. In 2022, highlighted films included “Wild Card”

(USA), “The Voice Actress” (Japan/ USA), “The Great Abandonment” (India/UK) and dozens of other works.

“Foreign Uncle” took the Best Student U.S. Short (China/USA), about Sining, who brings his American boyfriend, Patrick, back to China when he visits his family. Everyone’s attitude towards Patrick changes once Sining inadvertently comes out, except for that of his seven-yearold nephew, Naonao.

Awards and cash prizes worth $25,000, including five Academy Award-qualifying awards, will be announced on Sunday, June 25. The Best of the Fest shorts will screen on the final day, Monday, June 26.

Barenaked Ladies deliver indie tunes with on-stage banter

The fun–loving rockers in Barenaked Ladies return to the stage for the “Last Summer on Earth 2023” tour. Having started in Canada in 1988, the band has a style has that’s evolved from exclusively acoustic to encompassing a mixture of pop, rock, hip hop and rap.

Their live performances feature comedic banter and free-style rapping between songs. They have won multiple Juno Awards and have been nominated for two Grammy Awards. The group has sold over 15 million albums and singles, and they were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in March 2018.

Fans can likely expect to hear hits such as “If I Had $1,000,000,” “Brian Wilson,” “The Old Apartment,” “It’s All Been Done,” “Call and Answer,” “Pinch Me,” “Lookin’ Up,” and “Bringing It Home.” Their 13th album, “Detour de Force,” was released in July 2021, aided by the singles “Flip,” “Good Life,” and “New Disaster.”

Band members have grown up a lot since establishing themselves as indie trailblazers, but they are still known for being a “bunch of guys having a good time playing music [and] singing harmony,” per singer/ guitarist Ed Robertson.

June 22 Broadway star and concert artist Christiane Noll has been nominated for a Tony and Drama Desk awards and received the Helen Hayes Award for the revival of “Ragtime.” She starred in the national tour of “Dear Evan Hansen” and starred in “Jekyll and Hyde” and “Chaplin” on Broadway. Some of her other starring roles include “The Sound of Music Live” on NBC, “Elf,” “The Mambo Kings,” “Grease,” “Miss Saigon” and “City of Angels.”

PCT’s Summer Camp

More than a dozen theatre professionals will mentor youth in performing and stagecraft for Palm Canyon Theatre’s annual Summer Theatre Kid’s Camp June 12-July 21, MondayFriday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. $150 per week

The camp includes instruction in acting, singing, dancing, makeup, set design, props, costuming, stage combat, improv and more.

PCT summer kids camp is for young artists, ages 6-17 for six weeks, Monday through Friday from, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will be divided into age-specific groups. Each week has a special theme, including Western, Halloween, Princess, Super Heroes and more.

PSIPC winner wows New York

Redlands born pianist Jonathan Mamora continued his winning streak in New York City when he performed at Carnegie-Weill Hall, his performance prize for winning the Palm

Springs International Piano Competition’s 2022 Solo Prize. New York concert reviewer Rorianne Schrade wrote Mamora “possesses a technique so solid that it seemed at times that he couldn’t play a wrong note if he tried. On top of that solidity, he dazzles, with lightning-fast fingers and an encyclopedic array of dynamics and articulations….One looks forward to more from this outstanding pianist.

Palm Springs Young Playwrights Festival announces actors

The Palm Springs Young Playwrights Festival (PSYPF) announced that it has selected the cast that will perform the three winning plays as staged readings at the fifth annual festival, which will take place at the Palm Springs Cultural Center on June 4, at 12 p.m. Although tickets are free, RSVPs are required and may be reserved at psypf.org.

MANAGE, written by George Sandoval (17) of Valley View High School in Moreno Valley. In this play, a doctor tries to help a patient manage his Dissociative Identity Disorder (multiple distinct personalities) by looking to find the epicenter of why it developed. But is the doctor correct? This play will be directed by Chuck Yates, founder and former Artistic Director of Coyote StageWorks, and will be performed by actors Stephen Full of the TV show “Dog with a Blog,” and Mark Espinoza of the original “Beverly Hills, 90210” TV show.

ART, written by Arlo Topete (18), of Valley View High School in Moreno Valley. “ART” is a story about one’s journey of finally being free. Through flashbacks, Art shares his life experiences and the people who shaped him, negatively or positively, on finally coming out as trans. The play will be directed by Jerome Elliot Moskowitz, artistic director of Desert Ensemble Theatre, and will be performed by Marvel A. Rex of the “Book of Queer” TV show.

LOVE’S LABOUR’S MOTHS!, written by Xuan-Anh Ly Biggs (18), of Riverside Polytechnic High School in Riverside. A second-time winner, Xuan-Anh previously won in 2021 for her play, “The Homeless Rich Woman and the Playwright.” In this comedy, an actor’s love for theater shines through as he auditions and jumps through hurdles to secure the role of Moth in a production of William Shakespeare’s “Love’s Labour’s Lost.” Will it help if the actor is an actual moth? This play will be directed by Darin Anthony, artistic director of Moving Arts in Los Angeles, and performed by Noah Harpster, actor/producer on the TV show “Transparent,” Joel Bryant, a Desert Theatre League multiple winner, Jenapher Zheng, the lead in a Geffen Playhouse/LA production of “Man of God,” Wendle Josepher, who appeared in the film “Twister,” and Elizabeth Reilly.

It will be time to celebrate when Splash House returns this summer, with fun in the sun and electronic dance music. The famous pool party is celebrating its 10th anniversary as a three-weekend event that runs from June 9-11, August 11-13 and August 18-20 at the Renaissance, Margaritaville Resort and Saguaro Palm Springs hotels with after hours programming at the Palm Springs Air Museum.

Palm Springs Power Baseball is coming in hot this June with several games and special events in store for the crowds. This summer, the stadium will be having 25 games at home, two post-game firework shows, and the return of MicroMania Wrestling on June 23.

There are many options for groups – whether it be family, friends, coworkers, or just a group of Power fans, the whole group can be accommodated. Ice-cream is sold at the stadium on games nights, and there is an option to “Cool Up” your party with an ice-cream cake. Ice-cream cakes are available upon request.

The mini-Power team package is $125, to include 12 children and one adult. Other perks of this package include 13 admission tickets, 13 hot dogs, 13 sodas, 12 passes to the “Bounce House,” 13 Power team pictures, four bags of peanuts, On-field during National Anthem, PA announcement acknowledging group, and promotional contest participation.

The adult party package is priced at $150, and includes13 adults with 13 admission tickets, 26 drinks (soda or beer), 13 hot dogs, four bags of peanuts, PA announcement acknowledging group, and promotional contest participation.

The Power BBQ is $20 per person and includes table and chairs for groups. The package features an admission ticket, food plate, baked beans, fruit salad, lemonade and iced tea, one program per four people, reserved stadium seating, pre-game picture with Power team, PA announcement acknowledging group, and promotional contest participation.

In 2006 Power signed a long-term lease on Palm Springs Stadium with the city of Palm Springs. Many capital improvements have been made to the stadium since the Power’s 2004 arrival and the stadium received a brand-new paint job just in time for the Power’s season.

2010 marked the inaugural season of the California Winter League, boasting 4 teams, with all games played out of Palm Springs Stadium. Several new improvements to the stadium will be made in the coming year, all in the hopes of improving the fans experience at historic Palm Springs Stadium.
