ust in time for California’s reemergence to the world, the Palm Springs International Film Society will mark another exciting milestone as its annual Palm Springs ShortFest becomes the first film festival in the state to hold all of its screenings in-theatre in 2021. This favorite event for film buffs as well as Palm Springs residents and visitors will bring in California based filmmakers and industry representatives along with a return of the ShortFest Forum with virtual classes and panels featuring an impressive line-up of creative talent and special guests. Guests will have virtual access to the ShortFest Film Market library which will include thousands of submissions. Awards and cash prizes worth $25,000, including five Acade-

my Award-qualifying awards, will be announced on Sunday, June 27. The Best of the Fest shorts will screen on the final day, Monday, June 28. Hundreds of short films will be available for viewing, making the event one of the most acclaimed short film showcases in the world. The official selection of films is announced in early June, curated from more than 5,500 submissions received this season from around the world. In 2020, there were 332 films screened, and winners included Oscar-qualifying works such as Best of the Festival Award: “Matriochkas” (Belgium/France), directed by Bérangère McNeese; Special Mention (for Creative Vision): “Stay Awake, Be Ready” (Vietnam/South Korea/USA), Directed by Pham

Thien An; Best Documentary Short: “The Heart Still Hums” (USA), Directed by Savanah Leaf and Taylor Russell; Best Live-Action Short Over 15 Minutes: “Birth Right” (Israel), Directed by Inbar Horesh; Special Mention: “Henet Ward” (Egypt), Directed by Morad Mostafa; and numerous others. The festival will work closely with the Camelot Theatres to follow stringent cleaning protocols for screening rooms and public areas. Theatregoers will be required to wear masks, and screening capacity will be determined by public health guidelines at the time of the event. Passholders will have the opportunity to reserve a seat in advance before tickets go on sale to the public with priority access to seating.

alm Canyon Theatre (PCT) will hold its 25th annual kids summer camp, where more than a dozen theatre professionals will mentor kids in performing and stagecraft. Instruction covers acting, singing, dancing, makeup, set design, props, costuming, stage combat, improvisation and more. Campers will learn skills that will help them prepare for an audition or improve their self-esteem for school presentations. PCT offers its summer kids’ camp for young artists ages six through 17 years-old for six weeks. Each week features a special theme, such as

Western, Halloween, Princess, Super Heroes and others which are geared to spark young people’s imagination and confidence in expressing themselves. Participants will be divided into age-specific groups. The camp holds weekly showcases with a final performance the last two nights of the session. Previous summers have featured “Sinisterella” and “Who Was That Masked Guy Anyway.” Campers can participate in the full camp experience or on a weekly basis. With six classes a day and five guest artists, PCT’s camp is a way for kids to enjoy an introduction to culture and a return to social activities.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Let’s Hike

Places to stretch your legs in the high and low desert Cathedral City Cathedral Canyon Trail An approximate 1,000-foot elevation gain and a few steep inclines gives the trail a moderate rating with little shade. The 3.8-mile trail is used by mountain bikers and hikers. Park along the paved street near the end of Foothill Road.

Desert Hot Springs Mission Creek Stonehouse A historic structure tucked away in the lush wetlands of the Mission Creek Preserve. The stonehouse is a remnant of the area’s ranch days and features informational exhibits, as well as restrooms and picnic tables. Hikers with their four-legged friends enjoy the easy 3.2-mile round-rip hike, which follows a stream and passes by an enormous Freemont cottonwood tree. 50550 Mission Creek Road.

Joshua Tree Joshua Tree National Park A sweeping array of nature and fitness treks greets guests across the 1,250 square mile breadth of space, which makes Joshua Tree among the most popular hiking, camping and rock climbing attractions to locals and visitors. For leisurely hikes, check out the 3-mile 49 Palms Oasis hike or the 4-mile Lost Horse Mine and mountain hike. 6554 Park Blvd.

La Quinta Bear Creek Canyon Trail After cruising through a flat, sandy wash for the first 30 minutes, the gain hits all at once around the two-mile mark. But the steep trek through the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountain National Monument is well worth it, and is a prime spot for a picnic. Access trail near the intersection of Calle Tecate and Avenida Madero. Cove to Lake The first part of the 6.4-mile path is relatively flat, cutting through wideopen sandy terrain at the base of the Southern Santa Rosa Mountains before transitioning to more ups and downs. The path veers away from private property and heads towards Lake Cahuilla. Access the trailhead on Calle Tecate.

Morongo Valley Canyon Trail This 8.34-mile round trip hike descends gradually from the higher, cooler Mojave Desert down the canyon to the warmer Colorado Desert climate. This trail is a favorite of many local hikers and horseback riders. Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, 11055 East Drive.
